Training

After putting on far more off-season weight that I could possibly imagine, I started my 16-week marathon program in the second week of January, with the dual goals of losing 10kg to get back to race weight, and somehow getting my fitness up to a level where I could possibly set a new PR. Both were lofty, and being in my late 40's the idea of getting PRs keeps getting less and less feasible. But I'm not going to let a fancy word like "feasible" get in my way.
This would be my 10th marathon, a bit over 10 years after I ran my first. My previous 9 were all big city races, but I specifically decided to run my 10th in the relatively small town of Leiden because it was the first and only marathon that my father ran, in 1997, when he was 50 (he ran a very respectable time of 3h43m). So I wanted, as a tribute to him, to literally follow in his footsteps. Leiden was his favourite city, the city where both his parents came from, and also the city where I attended high school for 3 years, so it holds a special place in my heart as well.
As with the past 8 marathons, I followed the "Run Your BQ" program designed by Jason Fitzgerald. He no longer offers this program for sale, but I've developed my own simple web app that lets me follow a variety of programes for any given race day. This might be the last time I follow this program since I want to try out something new next time, but so far it's been quite good at getting me to keep running stronger and relatively injury-free, something which keeps getting more relevant.
As one might expect or personally know from experience, getting through base training while 10kg over your ideal weight is not much fun. But sticking to that 80/20 effort meant I never did feel too strained or overtrained, and I managed to finish the 16 weeks strongly. I also managed to arrive at my race weight just in time (intermittent fasting works well for me), and gauging from my final long run at race effort, I felt that a new PR could happen, if conditions on the day were ideal. IF.

Pre-race

As the race day approached, the weather forecast became increasingly concerning. It was predicted 2 weeks ahead of time that the day would be sunny and hot, at 25C. Usually predicting Dutch weather that far in advance is about as useful as throwing cooked spaghetti at a wall to see how long it sticks, but unfortunately, the meteorologists were spot-on this time. Having run NYC marathon in 2022, I knew that I don't fare well at these kinds of temperatures, and I was reasonably worried that I would fall apart in the last 10K, as I did then. Regardless of my fitness level, I knew that a PR was unlikely under these circumstances. But of course I took every precaution I could to still give myself the best chance. Super light Nike Aeroswift singlet, Raidlight multi-pocket shorts, Nike Alphafly 1, and most importantly a white running cap, which would prove essential for heat management. I had 7 Maurten hydrogels with me (3 with caffeine, 4 without), and would be taking these at ~5K intervals.

Race

Gun start was at 10am, and just as predicted, it was then already 18C and not a cloud in the sky. There was however a pretty decent wind (well, a breeze for Dutch standards) which had the effect of providing cooling but also being strong enough to slow you down when running into it (hence the slowdown between 20-25K). Leiden's course is flat however 80% of it goes through farmlands, which provides zero shelter from both sun and wind. I made use of every single water station - and there were plenty - taking a sponge of cold water I could use to soak my cap, as well as a cup of water to keep hydrated. Also there were at least 8 makeshift cold water showers along the course, which were all greatly appreciated.
Nonetheless, by the 25K mark I could already notice the quads were starting to get unhappy with me, and maintaining the pace would push me to threshold and possibly beyond, which I really did not want. On top of that the temperature steadily climbed and by noon it was already at around 23C. So I had no choice but to listen to reason and put aside my PR dreams, make sure I don't hit the wall and just ride it out for a sub 3.
Up until 38K, although in quite a bit of discomfort, I was pretty sure I had banked enough decently fast splits to be able to more or less cruise to the sub 3. But my head math sucks when under these conditions, and the closer I got to the finish the more I understood that this was far from a given. Indeed, with just 1200m left, I only had about 4m40s to make it to the finish. I had the adrenaline surge that kicked me into zone 5, enough for a 4:00/km pace to the finish, but unfortunately the twists and turns of the Leiden streets, along with the throngs of 21K runners sharing the course with us, meant it was really really hard to maintain a finishing kick speed (this marathon is not great if that is part of your race strategy). With 200m to go, the clock at the finish said 2:59:25, and I knew I was in trouble. I whispered to myself that there is no fucking way I was going to let this slip away from me, and found a new gear and enough space between the other runners to thrust myself across the line at 2:59:57. Godverdomme, that was close.

Post-race

Despite being in the hurt locker for most of the second half of the race, I wasn't dying after the finish. The light cramps I felt in the last 5K were magically gone, and I actually felt pretty ok, all things considered. The same cannot be said for many other runners I saw in the last few kilometers of the course and just beyond the finish line. The heat had taken its toll. Ambulances were out in full force and stressed to beyond capacity, and as a result the race organisers in conjunction with the mayor of Leiden made the tough decision at 16:00 to cancel the upcoming 10K event, as well as advise any remaining 21K runners still on the course to abandon their effort, for their own safety.
I was "lucky" enough that the 42K was the first race of the day and as such we were spared from the very highest temperatures, but the slower marathon and most of the half marathon runners were forced to endure 25C while crossing the finish. There were dozens of runners admitted to various local hospitals with dehydration and sun stroke symptoms, but fortunately nothing tragic.
While I didn't manage to keep to my planned pace (negative split when the temperature is rising is damn near impossible), I'm so glad I didn't blow up, and still managed to get my C goal. It was far from my fastest, but definitely one of my most satisfying results, considering how tough it was. An extra bonus was managing to finish 2nd in my age group.
Marathon #11 will be in Berlin later this year, let's hope for 12C and cloudy!

I know people ask this question all the time, and if you only listen to Clarke and Altman and...well...anyone from POL at this enquiry, they manage to make it sound like (Clarke especially manages to make himself sound so reasonable and almost as if he did whatever he could to help stop SPMR trials) it was just so unfortunate that they didn't read an attachment, or didn't attend a certain meeting, or only made the tea, really. But when you hear things like 'I only wanted trials to go ahead where Horizon wasn't involved but 'x' confessed' so we could have gone ahead and prosecuted', please bear in mind that Horizon was ALWAYS involved. Without the Horizon-generated bit of a4 paper, there would have been no 'shortage' generated that the SPMR would have to declare they had 'made good' in order to open their office and get access to the Horizon system again, that POL could have used as the genesis of their investigation and prosecution..
And what about those who 'confessed' ? I hope this goes some way to answering that question. I've tried to keep it a little light-hearted, just to keep your interest and attention to the end. It's in no way meant to make light in any way of the situation these victims of a miscarriage of justice experienced.
This is a question I've asked myself at various times, contemporaneously at times as news of another guilty verdict hit the headlines as the years ticked by. At the outset here, bear in mind that at the end of every 'Trading Period' (a 4 week period ending on a Wednesday), when the original Horizon was being used by a network of approximately 10,000 branches, at 5.30pm EVERYONE keyed in their cash and stock figures, quickly checked that they'd entered their mandatory reports ('spoiled' postage labels, stamp counts, three or four others) and hit 'return'.
Then waited.
And waited.
And Waited.
If you'd remembered to complete all the mandatory reports (you never got a friendly reminder that you'd forgotten to account for a 75p spoiled postage label BEFORE Horizon starting grinding out to it's conclusion of whether or not everything was as it should be and produced the verdict on (almost inevitably every time) how much you owed POL. Pence, or pounds. Hopefully not too much. But...well it was flawless, at that time (lets say circa. 2007), so a £200 loss of cash ? I guess I was just really careless that particular month (which is possible - but hopefully, you get the idea of how balancing' worked). But after maybe 45 minutes to an hour you got your result. Hey, IT PEOPLE - Please don't scoff and laugh at how bad the terminals we had to use were. I can't even remember now how much RAM they had, but it was pathetically inadequate. Judging by the time it took to process at the other end, I'm not sure Fujitsu was much better equipped to deal with hundreds of millions of nationwide transactions for 10,000 users simultaneously each month.
Your heart would sink, if after an hour, the sand timer finally stopped revolving, and you were informed that 'The following mandatory reports need to be completed : Spoiled Labels'.....Sigh. A one minute job, enter your 75p amount, then hit 'return'.
And wait.
And wait.
The good news was that maybe half the network were much more attentive than you, and remembered that POL needed to know that that 75p label you claimed to have spoiled at 10am last Friday indeed existed, and was in your physical possession, and had been accounted for fully in the system. Horizon was 'flawless' at that time, of course, and could only continue to be flawless if everyone remembered to enter their spoiled label value amounts.
And then, the sand timer would disappear, and you would get the verdict. Your value stock and cash, when reconciled, either had 'no discrepancies' (I experienced this phenomenon once in 120 balances. I called my wife over to take a look, she asked what I'd done wrong. I told her nothing...hopefully.
But usually, there was a (small) cash shortfall which needed to be made up, I was responsible after all, so whether through carelessness, stupidity or dishonesty, it was down to me to make sure POL was made whole again so that you, dear taxpayer, could sleep soundly at night knowing that every 75p spoiled label, and every £5 that any SubpostmasteMistress had tried to fenagle from this Great British Institution was rightfully and righteously accounted for and returned to its' rightful place in the safe that Wednesday night.
You glance at the clock. It's almost 7pm. Fuck it, it's only a fiver, Horizon has given me the choice to make good the shortfall with cash or cheque. I choose cash. I don't know if I'll be here until midnight if I try to give post office a cheque to make good my error so I'll put the cash in, rebalance, take the loss and finish the process. I could finally move the discrepancy to the 'Suspense Account, print that out, sign to confirm this was a true and accurate reflection of the cash and stock amounts held in this office, and finally head for home (I may have got some of the smaller details wrong, may have got some processes in the wrong order, I apologise, I...um...can't recall the exact details, but hopefully it does at least give some insight into a Wednesday evening at your local post office through the 'noughties').
IF God Forbid !!! you had a large discrepancy, or there was something you needed to clarify with NBSC (PO Helpdesk), then it was time to make yourself comfortable and wait - with the other (maybe) couple of hundred SPMRs with a problem - your turn in the queue.
But, in all seriousness, at this point, the only option you have, if you have a big loss, or even a medium or small loss, is to wait so that you know your problem is going to be logged, it's NEVER going to be resolved that evening, because you're going to be told 'you're the only one' who is having, or has EVER had this problem. Or you can sign off on the account, falsely declare that you've made good the twenty thousand pound loss Horizon has presented you with, go home sweating and trembling, maybe knowing that you've actually committed an act of accounting fraud, if you're legally literate, I'd hazard that at that time nobody would be thinking clearly though, because the one thing you were told in training, and that you knew from experience, that the only way Horizon would 'roll over' the trading period account as being settled', and allow you to reboot the system the next morning in the new trading period, was to declare that everything had been settled.
I can't imagine how any of these SPMRs felt next day. No option they would choose to take was good. Post Office, by making the signing of a printout of a trading statement, had you over barrel now. If they couldn't prove theft - I'll rephrase that - EVEN IF A THEFT NEVER OCCURRED, even if it were a Horizon glitch, they knew they could have you for fraud. Now, some SPMRs would think about it, and decide that they could use phantom 'manual' deposits (like paper deposit slips or figuring out maybe how to make up some withdrawals that would at least stall the revelations of a massive loss, buy some time not to leave the country, but in the hope that Horizon would somehow make an opposite and equal screw-up and everything would be as it should.*
I hope this pure conjecture goes some way to explaining why some SPMRs did what they did to cover up a loss that they may have had no idea how had arisen.
*Horizon would NEVER reverse a mistake, in my very limited and uneducated opinion - by signing off the branch account, and transferring the 'loss' to local suspense, showing a shortage/excess balance of ZERO at close of business, what logic was there for the Horizon computer system, to look backward if in the next trading period there was some *unexplained* credit to the system, it's a gain, move it to...where ? POLs own profit and loss account ?
Yes, conjecture, opinion, and maybe flights of fancy here. But when Jo Hamilton asks 'I didn't take that money. Where did the money go ?' I think this is the most under-rated, overlooked question asked so far.

What do you study or do for a living? How did you come to do that? What do you like or dislike about it?

• I heavily considered skipping this question as I’d honestly rather just have the money to live and have the free time pursue my own ideas and whims. However, I have a Fine Arts degree with Digital Illustration. At one point I considered being an engineer. While I’m good at math & data the construction part of it all seemed so tedious compared to the idea stages. Computer programs always come naturally to me so digital art was no exception and I was able to bring the fantastical ideas I have in my brain to life. Storytelling in particular was always the appeal.
  
• I currently work a very niche retail. I am always tired after it as I can’t stand long-term socialization, feel under-paid and under-appreciated and hate the unpredictable schedule. It is not a difficult job though, has good benefits, and it revolves around a fantasy, imaginative theme that I have in depth knowledge on. I get to personality type as part of it too. I also do freelance illustration on the side, particularly for ttrpgs. I would rather make all my living from home.
  

What else do you do on a daily basis? What are your interests and hobbies? Why do you do them?

• I’m into typology (if that wasn’t obvious) and have been since I was very young. It really helps me to understand the very confusing behavior of humans & their emotions. Prone to rabbit hole diving on the internet for hours and hours, especially when it comes to a current hyper-fixation. I love to learn and know everything about what I’m into. I dream of being one of those people with the old 90s style webpages that have an in depth history of a product dating back from its invention to current day. My procrastinating habit will probably never let me do it though.
  
• Very much enjoy reading. Favorite genres are Fantasy, Psychology & Mythology. I also love deep dive analysis/true crime/psychology videos on youtube. I have a passion for theme parks and their history. I also love music and can play a few instruments and sing. I’m a big fan of D&D and am part of 4 campaigns currently. The character invention is my favorite part of the process.
  

What are your values, and why?

• I don’t think much about values. It doesn’t play much into my day to day but I guess - Independence. Creativity. Autonomy. Balance. Nonviolence. Curiosity. Open-mindedness? It’s easier to come up with values I don’t hold in high regard than ones I do.

Describe your relationships with family and friends. What do you like and dislike about them?

• Very hands off approach with family. I moved 1000+ miles away from them not because of negative interactions but rather just priority to myself.

Dad: I enjoy his company a lot. We are both very logical and practical and are fine with low communication. He’s always supported my interests, passions, and creativity no matter how weird he found them to be.
Mom: I love her but in childhood she often worried about me being socially behind and would berate me with concerns over finding more friends or a romantic partner. What she preferred to talk about felt very frivolous to me (clothing, family drama ect). Often told me I was too critical to her (“made her feel stupid”) which was never my intention. I’ve known her to be overly emotional and clingy at times but she got me into music and raised me with kindness which I appreciated.
Sister: Has always been the source of frustration for me as she is very reactive, confrontational and requires a lot of attention and affection which I do not give. Very opposite to me.

What do you look for in friends? In romantic relationships?

• I have 3 friends plus a partner. 3 seems to be the consistent number in my life as any more and I cannot upkeep the relationships. When I am first making friends it is usually due to sharing the same passion/interests. I need people around me who are privy to the same activities I am - art, computers, ttrpgs, niche media, psychology, ect - so I have topics of discussion that are full of depth and fascination and do not have to struggle through the “how’s your day” sort of thing. It’s important that my friend are accepting of the strange and unusual (we all ended up being queeneurodivergent) not prone to drama or emotional outbursts and not very into outdoorsy/social activities. I don’t do sports (watching or otherwise), clubs, drinking, or parties (I do enjoy intimate social get togethers that I have a purpose/theme, however).
  
• In romance I believe I’ve found the perfect person for me already. My partner is very complimentary. We were friends first and though our personalities were very different we had similar interests. They were sure to not scare me off by taking things very slow. (Ex: I dislike most all physical touch and they were super respectful in always asking for permission to hug me at first) They are much more direct and confrontational than I am and infinitely better with emotions and understanding social dynamics. They’ll do the talking when I don’t want to and push the physical tasks whenever I am struggling to motivate. They remember the little things about me like my preferences in aesthetic, interest and food and if it is a hair wash day or not and are very observant to notice if I have neglected things towards myself like forgetting to eat or drink in a day. Being on equal footing is very important to me. We work together, as a team, always.
  

What conflicts have you encountered recently with other people? Why did they happen? Which kinds seem to happen on a regular basis?

• Most recent would be with my sister. Her wedding is this year and I wanted to gift her my artwork for her invitations. We set a deadline and a plan. She texts me, a week and a half before we agreed on and says she’s disappointed it wasn’t done yet - that she believes I don’t care about her or her wedding and never make any effort so maybe I should just forget it. She saw the explanation I gave her when she asked for when it would be done as an excuse. I felt completely confused and blindsided. I sent a screen-cap of the exact timeframe we agreed upon. No, I’m not messaging you about your wedding constantly (it’s your event not mine) I’m doing what was asked of me and making effort the best I can. I made a neutral reply to which she apologized later. Otherwise I can’t think of the last actual conflict I was a part of.

What are your strengths? What do people like about you? What do you like about yourself?

• I’m told often that I am super knowledgable and a great resource. My friends tell me I should write a book due to my ability to understand things quickly and relay them in a digestible but detailed manner. I’m great at editing things (film/graphics/writing). I can come up with many innovative solutions and ideas that others are impressed by. I get complimented on my unique perspective and hard work. I’ve been told I’m approachable and never cause problems. I value my intelligence, logic, open-mindedness and creativity.

What are your weaknesses? What criticism do you often face from others? What do you dislike about yourself?

• I struggle motivating myself to start any task that isn’t related to my chosen fixation. I procrastinate even on things I love. I’m not goal oriented and would rather just imagine or research things all day than put anything into action. I’m embarrassingly bad at replying to texts and cannot make phone calls or order at a restaurant without repetitive rehearsal in my head.
  
  • I have been criticized for being apathetic, procrastinating, weird, too private and stubborn. My partner has been upset at me trying to find solutions and seeing all sides when they just wants to express their feelings.

In what areas of life can you manage well on your own? In what areas of your life would you like help?

• I don’t need help with critical thinking, routine, introspection, idea generation, artistry, spirituality, learning, diet, or relationships (I’m good with the ones I have as they are thanks).
  
• I need more help with doing lol. Not letting my idea just stay in my head. Striving for goals and standing up for myself. Not overthinking things. I am also bad at purposeful fitness or making health appointments because it’s very out of sight out of mind. I’ve always been quite healthy naturally but when I’m not I don’t do much to fix it. I just hope it goes away.
  

What things do you dislike doing? What things do you enjoy more than others?

• I dislike socializing 9/10 or participating in any form of career competition (marketing and networking are awful). Phone calls are anxiety inducing. I hate to be the center of attention unless I’m accurately prepared for it. Surprises in social settings are horrible (please don’t have the restaurant sing to me on my birthday). I don’t get any joy from clubbing, drinking, recreational drugs, gym activities, watching sports or going to the beach.
  
• It’s hard to gauge. I’d say I like researching & brainstorming more than others. I enjoy hypothesizing the meaning and significance of things more than most (like film analysis). Making categorizations and sorting is fun both in my brain and in physicality. I love cooking, taking quizzes, creating playlists and almost never get lonely when I am alone.
  

What goals, aspirations, or plans do you have for the future, and why?

• Just to be happy. I am content with most of my life at the moment. I would like to get a better job, to own a house and to get married to my partner but it is not a pressing priority at the moment.

What kinds of things do you do to manage and/or beautify your environment (your room, your house, etc.)?

• I have a good eye for decorating. Though, I find I usually only have the motivation when starting in a completely new space. Updating a place after having it for a while happens rarely, slowly, and in only small ways. I lean more minimalist (I hate spending money unless it’s really worth it) but I love creating color palettes, themes and making sure things match. I prefer to be comfortable and for my surroundings to be calming but also reflective of my passions. Making sure things stay tidy is a whole different story, however, as I will leave clothes on the floor and forget to put things away often. It’s gotten better with age and some strategies (like bins to toss things in instead of folding).

If you won the lottery and didn't have to work anymore, what would you do?

• Bold of you to assume winning the lottery would mean I didn’t have to work anymore in this economy (I kid. I kid). No longer having to work would be a dream come true. I’d of course invest & save first to protect myself against any monetary troubles that could arise in the future. After that I would travel. Explore all the places I could possibly want, indulge in specialty items, food and experiences- museums and libraries from all over the world especially. Once I’m done with that, or perhaps even during, I would work on my creative ideas that I’ve felt I never have time for. Writing a book, drawing animatics for my characters, update my portfolio, inventions ect ect.

What traits do you find endearing that others might dislike? What traits are considered positive/neutral by others but tend to annoy you?

• Quirkiness, nonconformity & authenticity in lifestyle is very admirable to me. I encourage when children ask probing questions because too often they are put down for curiosity instead of given answers. I love when people infodump about their interests because even if I may have zoned out I’d want them to listen to me too.
  
• I am annoyed by the emphasis on pleasantries (“How are the kids?, Did you see that new movie?) and how it can impact others opinions of you if you don’t partake in them. Unprovoked advice/demands are always irritating. People comparing themselves, competing or “rating” others or talking a lot about their bodies, is confusing to me and awkward.
  

How do you behave around strangers?

• Depends on the setting really. Default is distant. I never introduce myself or approach first unless it is a requirement. If I am working I am expected to be approachable and friendly but I’m usually mentally checked out and just performing the tasks in those instances. Whatever gets them to leave me alone so I can go back to my thoughts is preferable. I’m never rude, however, and can mask really well. If they are talking about something interesting there’s a chance I might engage on my own or to share my insight. I have a tendency to observe and listen in on others conversations.

How do you react to conflict? What do you do if somebody insults or attacks you?

• I avoid conflict as much as I can. I’m really good at going around situations and premeditating what might cause discontentment before it happens. Most all of my friends have claimed to have never seen me angry but would be horrified if I ever was. I find myself to be the bigger person in most cases. I can put on an unfazed expression because it doesn’t really matter. Inside I might feel anxious and raging so I will likely flee as soon as I am able. I’ll process my feelings on the situation later when I’m alone. I’ve never faced physical violence so I can’t really say what I would do there. Observing conflict between others makes me embarrassed and I usually leave the space if I can. I can easily see all sides to a situation but hate the outward explosion of emotions. I will try and be a good mediator if the situation is calm enough for it.

Would you ever be interested in starting a business? Why or why not? What role would you play in it? What kind of business would it be?

• I have an etsy for freelance/convention art/commissions/merch so I suppose that counts. I’m not very good at the marketing and networking angle required, just the conceptualizing part. Though I like the idea of the freedom of working for myself at my own pace, I worry I might not be able to keep myself motivated and would rather be a background support to an already existing company. I already struggle with completing the tasks on time. Maybe one day I’ll find something niche enough that could make me money out of my interests.

How do you dress or manage your appearance?

• I dress comfortably but to my personal aesthetic taste. Modest overall. I still have some clothing I’ve had since being a teen for practicality sake. Nothing fancy or specific. I have a particular color palette (earth tones) I chose to only buy so that way it stops me from analysis paralysis in selecting new clothes. I wear minimal makeup just to cover blemishes (to the point my roommate did not realize I was wearing it for years). I have never died my hair and cut it twice a year or so myself as keeping it natural and long is the least amount of maintenance possible. I don’t think about my appearance much unless I’m going to a themed event where I make an effort.

Do you like kids? Why or why not?

• Not much. I’m staunchly childfree and have never found a baby I deemed “cute”. They’re loud, gross and unpredictable and I could never deal with them 24/7. I’m not bad at interacting with them, however, they seem to like me quite a bit. I admire their curiosity and when they are polite. Working with kids is much easier than being around them in my free time.

In what situations or times in your life did you feel most fulfilled, and why?

• I felt quite fulfilled when I completed my first book (Illustrated/written/designed by me) or whenever I get selected as a representative expert on something in order to problem solve or relay information. I don’t care about the attention so much as the validation that my internal view of my skills now has a quantifiable external result.

Sometimes I feel we urbanists, activists and sociologists tend to conflate "pretty" with "gentryfied".
Isn't it nice to have fancy shops, wealth, etc. per se ? What about everybody getting richer (in terms of purchasing power) ? What's wrong with freshly painted facades, bikes, plants etc ? What if these were global, general trends, and not necessarily linked to a "dominant" class ? I mean it's quite clear that societies change, there are more and more people attracted by what could have been labelled "bourgeois" lifestyle. Now pretty much everyone has Instagram and eats avocado toast.
That does not mean that poor and working class folks get automatically kicked out of everywhere. That means that this gentry lifestyle expands.
Now and then you can read testimonies of people who grew up in some inner city neighborhood and say that there are no large families in the hood anymore. But isn't it a general trend : fewer large families ? And who knows about the true reasons, maybe people with kids just want gardens now ? Expectations differ from one generation to the next. Maybe families didn't escape inner cities back then because cars were not affordable.
Same with prices. They go up, but salaries too. People are ready to put more money in their home and spend more time there, like it's been the norm in Scandinavia for decades.
I feel that "detrimental gentryfication" as a concept needs to be backed by a really scientific methodology.

A few days ago, I received a file from a journalist friend who teaches at a private university in Montevideo. I known this person for years now and the exchange with her on our countless bar nights basically made me want to try to study journalism. After I started my career we became even closer and we shared concerns about the evolution of information, social media and the infamous cerebral callosity we acquired to endure the tragedy.
My friend, let's call her Valeria, was part of a public competition to accompany a minor scientific expedition to the Uruguayan Antarctic base. Her thesis was about investigating how information reception behaves in remote and isolated areas.
I barely read it , but basically tries to show that information circulates and is received in a particular way in these circumstances by a group of unfamiliar people living under extreme climatic and isolation conditions, having as an example, life in submarines and in military bases in Siberia. The Antarctic base gave her the chance to observe some of her postulates up close.
Finally, she was chosen and traveled with this scientific group in a commercial flight Montevideo - Santiago de Chile to later arrive at Punta Arenas and fly to the Antarctic base.
The last communication I had with her before she sent me the almost 90 photographic captures of the Journal, was on March 15, 2024.
We talked over the phone about how the weather was in Montevideo, that it does not stop raining and the cars are practically floating on the streets. She told me that the transport that was going to take them back was having mechanical problems and they would probably have to order spare parts for the plane from Punta Arenas. Then She told me that it is freaking cold down there and his colleagues are all very boring. Nobody has whisky for the evenings. We laughed about that part because I told her to bring at least one bottle of Grappa in her purse.
Before saying goodbye, she told me they had spotted some old metal structures south of the base. The soldiers told her that it was safe to go near that part so she was going to explore them. It wasn't there when they first arrived and that the recent and atypical heat wave probably must have exposed it. I told her to be careful and we said goodbyes.
Three days later I received an email. “Valeria shared a file with you.” As I start to see what it was about she calls me.
“Mauro? MAURO!, can you hear me?” She said in a nervous and excited voice.
“I can barely hear you, what happened?”I asked half asleep, while still lying on my bed.
“Listen to me carefully, don't talk, just listen” I could tell by her agitation that she was walking fast or maybe running. The creaking footsteps in the snow could be heard in the background. in the distance, a catastrophe-type siren was blaring.
“Are you alright? What happened? What's that noise?” I said, now sitting on the edge of my bed.
“I sent you a file. Transfer it to a flash drive, delete history and reset your cell phone, the computer and your email address. I'll explain everything later, it'll be worth it.”
“What? What are you talking about Vale?, what for? Tell me what's going on - I started to yell at her, in slide panic.
“Listen, I found something that is not supposed to exist. In the diary he explains everything. I'm going back to the base, I think someone is following me, I set off an alarm or something. Save that file for me until I get there and remember that... “
There were two loud booms and the sound of water invading the transmission. A choked bubbling and cracking sound reminded me of ice collapsing. My friend had fallen into the water, in Antarctica.
“HEY, are you OK?! What happened?!” - I kept screaming hysterically until the call was cut off.
I looked at my cell phone for a second. My hands were shaking, I tried calling several times but the phone went dead. I looked at the compressed file. I jumped up and ran to the dining room furniture, frantically looking for a white flash drive that had to be in a drawer somewhere. I couldn't find it, so I went back to my desk. I pulled the drawer so hard that it came off the rail and fell to the floor. I started to dig through my belongings on the floor, coins, papers, cards, nothing.
I thought, I struggled to remember where I had fucking put it. Finally I saw my backpack peeking out from behind the desk chair, I jumped on it and in the second small pocket from the inside, there was a cheap white 16G flash drive. I put it in the pc, downloaded the file directly there, took it out and fabric restored the entire system on the computer. I do the same with my cell phone as Valeria said.
At the time I didn't even question if those measures really prevented me from being tracked, and the idea that that was the reason made panic run through my body like lightning. Sitting on the floor of my room next to the mess, my body was numb with tension. After a few seconds, I rebooted my cell phone to try to call Lucia, her sister.
“Hello?”
“Lucia, it's that you? I think something bad happened to Vale, I hear her over the phone as if she fell into the water, and some rumbling. I don't know what I heard, I think she got into some trouble or some place she shouldn't have been - I realized that I was mumble and not saying anything clear. For some reason, I didn't mention the file.
“It can't be Mauro, I just spoke to her on the phone. She was at the airport in Santiago de Chile at the boarding lounge, we talked for about half an hour, she told me she was bringing a fancy bourbon to share and…”
I stopped listening, it didn't make sense, how could it be? what the fuck is going on!
“Mauro, are you ok? Is something wrong? it's too early, are you sure you didn't dream it?”
“Did you talk to her? half an hour ago? But...,” I exclaimed without being able to hide my confusion.
“Are you... sure it was her?”
“Yes, of course you moron, it's my sister! Did you smoke pot again on an empty stomach?”
“No, you're right, nevermind, thanks Lucia, talk to you soon.” I ended the call without letting her say goodbye.
Had I dreamt about it? I erased everything now, how will I know if I dreamt it? I hesitated absurdly.
This is surreal, I thought to myself as I looked at the flash drive in my hand. I refocused my attention and went to the attic looking for my brother's old laptop he left me before going to live in Spain. It was practically useless, but it was enough to see the file. I turned it on, waited for the decrepit Windows XP to load, and put the flashdisk in, opened the compressed folder and found two files.

I decided to open the journal first. From what I interpreted from the loading order of the screenshots, after reading it, I opened the image of the last page.

Day 243 of the 2nd mission 10: 40 am. March 12, 2019.
I am the head researcher of the Psychological Area at the UN Antarctic base; I'm currently assigned to Project Sisyphus categorized as the highest classified rank.
This is going to sound crazy, but the person living with my family is my clone.
It still surprises me when I say it out loud, but after being able to replicate the brain-muscular history (a perfect copy of our memory) of any person and having mastered replicating every cell of our bodies at any age, it was only a matter of time before the development of social biotechnology would emerge. Now and by worldwide agreement, as a complete secret.
There is absolutely no shame or a shred of ethics in what we do, there is no longer any constraint on what we can do to the subjects for the sake of research. That haunts me every day.
It all went to shit so fast, I doubt anyone will come to our rescue. The protocol says so, the base in the face of an imminent security risk will erase itself. The structure was designed to collapse methodically following a protocol of incineration and sinking. The immediate perimeter has underwater mines that make the ice collapse almost imperceptibly, but deadly to anyone who tries to leave.
No one can escape from the base, neither the research staff nor the subjects. Our place in the world is already taken.
I only hope that this journal along with my lab notes will be found at some point. I managed to construct a small insulating gasket for it so I trust it will survive in case this part of the building collapses as well.

At the exact moment I ended the reading I received a video call that made me jump with fright, it is...
Valeria.
With my pulse shaking, I answered the call.
“Hi you! The flight was delayed, can you believe it? This one is absolutely in my top three, worst trips of my life. I'm really hungry and everything is so expensive here. What are you up to? Tell me something, please, I'm soooo bored!”
I looked at her with confusion and I couldn't manage to pronounce words. When I was about to modulate an answer she interrupted me.
“What's the matter Mauro?, are you on pause? Is the signal OK? HELLO! Can you hear me? Can you see me?” She started to walk through the boarding lounge looking for better signal
“Yes yes, Valeria I can hear you.”
She laughed and looked at me with a face between sensual and serious, and continued.
“Do you miss me?” while raising the phone jokingly as she typically does in her selfie pose.
“Valeria, don't you remember calling me earlier today?”
“I? called you? Nop. Why? Ah! By the way, did you know there are penguins in Tierra del Fuego? I would have liked to go and see them.” She continued his verbose conversation in a carefree tone, with her typical hand gestures and playing with his hair.
“Well, at last!” She interrupted herself and shouted, jumping up from her chair.
“We are being called to board, see you in a couple hours!” She said goodbye with a smiling sonority, and began to walk towards the boarding gate.
But at the last second, before ending the call, her gesture changed. She looked directly at the camera with a hardened and emotionless face and almost mechanically, she whispered.
“(I'm going to retrieve that diary).”
My stomach dropped to the floor and I could feel as if my blood was running cold with fear. I could not shake the awful and eerie feeling that this person, who was returning, whom I had never in my life called by her full name, was not my friend.
So, the next couple of hours I put everything in to transcribe the rest of important passages of the diary. Something was compelling me to do it, i can't explain it, Some mix between moral duty, and morbid curiosity. Here is my selection of it.
Lab notes. day 96 of 1st mission 08:00 am December 22, 2016.
Subject JON X012:
First physical assessments: Normal, alert and inquisitive, exhibits some alteration to screens.
We place 100 cc of sedative in room air. The subject attentively follows the narrative of scenario B5 “The last mission”.
The subject responds positively to the premises of the story, where he is asked to address an audience threatened by a natural disaster, convincing them to choose a certain path out of the city.
He offers to collaborate but fails to articulate the message with the power to overcome the simulation.
We resort to pouring 125cc of concentrated Psilocybin into the air as stipulated in the protocol sheet.
The vocal frequency and body language reading receptors in the observation room are activated. The subject manages to formulate a series of premises articulately and with discursive power, circulating around the observation room.
Successful reaction.
We move on to the next stage.

Today we received a new lab assistant for the night shift. Much needed as I was covering these shifts myself and am really burned out. The underground operates at full power at those hours, the hum of the machinery becomes unbearable. This must be why the rooms have an insulating structure.

Day 112 of the 1st mission 19:00 pm January 08, 2017.
The new integration is not very bright. He labeled the transcripts wrong again yesterday and doesn't seem to fully understand the importance of these. I'm going to have to go through the whole method with him again. I don't have much patience lately, it's not his fault, he seems like a nice guy and it's real that I need a second of confidence. Better train him from now on. Maybe start a sketch of a short explanatory document.

Small introductory guide.
When the subjects conclude the incubation and breeding process (pages 19 to 52 of the manual), that is to say, that they have at least remembered speech and with it, depending on the time in which they lived, reading and writing, they generally begin to perceive themselves. Just before situational curiosity is when the psychology department comes into action. Either to run the “stand by” simulation or the main tests.

We tried not to use familiar ones, as human smells are impossible to replicate. We found this out in a complicated way. We tried to recreate a conversation between RR subject X003 (Reagan) and his mother, but he recognized the fakery by the absence of body odor. His mind collapsed and we had to move him to the Underground. The people in Area C (Private Clients) almost lost a very large Chinese account.
After calibrating the subject, we ran both psychological and behavioral tests, scanned retinas, analyzed blood, as well as vocal and body language. But what has really yielded surprising results are the free interviews. It is amazing what some minds are capable of with the right environmental and chemical stimulation. That's why transcription is vital (!!)
Our area develops BC (Behavioral Algorithms) which are then bought by the private sector, and some government agencies.
To give you some examples: Twitter was an idea of subject JO X008 (Orwell).
Bots in social media and the use of big data was an idea of JG X002 (Goebbels) and KM X014`s worst nightmare (Marx) was bought by Amazon.
It is an arduous process and the success rate is low, but when we achieve the goal per subject, well, these results are a mein part of the latest revolutions of mankind.
So follow the lab rules, never refer to subjects by their actual historical name, and always remember, they are assets, not people.

Day 117 of the 1st mission 16:30 am January 12, 2017.
Today is a rest day all over area D. I miss many things from the old world that I thought I would never miss, taking a bus, standing in line with strangers, and today I miss Sundays. We only have one on the month. So as usual we gather in the rest area to listen to a liberated jukebox that tries to lighten the mood. I know, right? Why I wrote about this “Saturday” photocopy, well besides the same nostalgic drunks, I was approached by a person I didn't recognize.
From what I understood he was a rehabilitated alcoholic, maybe that's why I didn't see him on “Saturdays”. He must be in his 50's, he was portly and wore thick black-rimmed glasses, he seemed to have a slight limp, I noticed it when he went to refill my beer.
I am a very reserved person and find it hard to talk to people. Truth be told, I've lost the desire to talk to people here. What can you actualy fucking talk about here, if it's not about the same thing. Everything revolves around work and some inter-area gossip, which never escalates much.
But yesterday was Clara's birthday and to hide the remorse and sadness of only having shared with her the first 3 years of her life, I had a few too many beers.
We chatted about banal aspects of life in isolation, and the things we miss. For him it was going to the stadium to watch soccer with his grandchildren. I think it was loneliness and nostalgia that brought us together that night.
His name was Sigfried, I don't know if I spelled it right, but it was clearly Nordic, i notice because of some of the words he mixed up with English. He works as the underground level security manager. We all know that it is one of the most restricted areas and what we have learned in these almost 10 years in the project, is that the more restricted, the less questions you should ask.
But that day, I think I felt the urge to hurt myself, to go off the rails, so I asked what we all suspected but no one knew for sure. I asked about the blenders. I wish I hadn't.

Day 126 of the 1st mission 08:00 am January 21, 2017.
I almost can't express how furious I am today, but I'm going to try because if I don't, I'm going to punch the new assistant in the face. He has nothing to do with this, he's just mildly irritating.
Anyway, in Genetic Mapping or area A, they approved the incubation of another Anomaly. It seems to be an express request from a major shareholder and there is not much to say. Anomalies are very risky to reproduce, nature is wise, and for some reason it placed them in history moments where they had their limitations.
It seems that after the crisis of 2010 with “The Russian Devil” it is no longer scary enough. New school morons... If they had been there they wouldn't even dare to think about it. I AM FURIOUS.
The arguments are that this case lived longer, that the clone would be in his 70s, and that he possessed noticeably more “civilized” traits. As if the court of the last Zar had not been somewhat civilized.
Personally I think this is a big mistake. Since the discovery that some people possess unknown DNA components and with the 2010 background, they should draw the line. Today was the last session with subject JON X012, I managed to extract the last retinal and body language readings, as usual before sending them to Underground level. We ran the dinner scenario, the truth is that is one of the best simulations we have achieved. The subjects are relaxed resulting in the best free interview environment. This one was no exception, I must say I understand the charm of the “messiah” turned out to be quite an entertaining subject. I hope his next generation will be similar.

I was tasked with the continuous monitoring of subject NT X004. I am not at all happy with this transfer. First of all, I know nothing about area B of engineering and technology. Secondly, I still think this is a really bad idea.
One of the laboratories has been set up with the essential simulation equipment and personnel. Tomorrow we start with the calibration.

First interview with subject NT X004, we run simulation scenario 54-A, “Signal from another planet.”
Subject is observed to be receptive at first but quickly changes to paranoid. We administer 300cc of MDMA via air, according to protocol.
We introduce the reconstructed figure of a colleague in a cry for help speech.
The Subject laughs and doesn't believe a word, we move to a physical approach plane,
I volunteer myself with a room operator from the engineering area, we show him unfinished plans of an experimental vacuum propulsion engine.
He laughs again and tells us that we are not who we say we are.
We administer 50cc of DMT and move on to the next scenario.
From the screen an astronaut with non-human features sends a distress signal and intergalactic coordinates.
The subject looks thoughtful, reassesses, picks up the blueprints and begins to shout out values and what appears to be mathematical and physical formulas.
Air is charged with percentages of absolute sedation.

I'm not sure what happened today, this is the first time in 10 years that a subject overcame the deception of 3 simulations. We had to place absolute sedation in the air, as risky as we know it is. I recommended that we restart the process from scratch, but it was a resounding no, the client is in a hurry.
I need to get more involved in this case to recalibrate the subject. I don't know if I want to. The words before full sedation still resonate with me. “are you still using DC current? interesting...”

Something happened, I don't quite know what. The rooms have an emergency lockdown active. Outside hear security personnel mobilizing. I tried the intercom but it didn't work. The insulation prevents my screams from being heard from the outside. If this goes on another day I'm going to break the lock. I'm going to set my backpack to the bare minimum.

Day 157 of the 1st mission 21:00 pm February 21, 2017.
Yesterday I heard explosions in the B area. I couldn't take it anymore and broke the lock. Whatever it was I had to go out and see. The corridors were dark, and the underground buzzer went on, at least that worked.
I went right to the north staircase, down the 4 floors in near darkness, the power was failing. The entrance to the underground area was barricaded but I managed to see a figure peeking out from inside as they felt me making noises.
It was Sigfried, he pointed me in the doors direction and I entered through a heavily armored side door. I was surprised by the immensity of this section, it encompassed a large hall below almost all the sectors of the base. In front of us there were 4 large industrial pipes with switches and multiple smaller pipes coming out of their bases. These were repeated like mosaics throughout the area until they disappeared into the distance in the darkness.
Leaning against one of them were 3 officers in formerly white coats and a nearly dead guard bloodied on the floor. Poor guy, his legs were crushed with his flesh in the open. He was lying in a pool of his own blood.
He had a blank stare and was panting, it seemed from the pale of his skin, that his fate was imminent. My asthma began to pound in my chest sharply, so I reached into my bag looking for my inhaler. I told them between visible gasps of bad breath to please tell me what's happened.
One of the doctors had a badge from area B and another from area E which corresponds to bio-armamentistics. The latter burst into tears and said “We deserve it, every one of us, we deserve it”.
I knew the other guy, he is an engineer in area B. I could hear him babbling almost nonsensically about, as why they never thought about it, an issue with electrical power.
He looked at me carefully as if recognizing me and grabbed me tightly by my jacket pulling me close to his face transformed for the panic.
“He let them out, all of them!” but not only that, no no no no... he told them the truth. Nikola fucking Tesla hacked us and told them the truth.”
He began to laugh frantically with a face of absurdity until he burst into a choked cry. At that moment everything went dark. The emergency lights activated, and from far away and getting closer, along with the emergency sirens that began to sound, we heard a large mass of people screaming and running through the corridors outside.
Sigfried looked at me as they started to pound on the shielded door and said.
“We're fucked.”

After finishing the transcription, my whole body began to want to flee, the walls of my house were tinged with a faint blue light as the cloudy dusk came through the window, the lights turned off by my abstraction at the computer gave way to the dark corridors that began to feel alien. As I gently closed the pc my ears began to ring as if under pressure, my breathing became more present and the vibration of my cell phone interrupted my trance.
A call from the office. It was to tell me that I had a vacation week pending, that by schedule, I had to take it starting today.
Sons of bitches, now they even choose your time off - I thought at first, but at the same time I found the voice on the phone very strange, and to tell the truth, the procedure itself.
The anger turned into confusion that only added to the paranoia. The sounds in the street began to seem erratic, a chaotic and strangely familiar feeling came over me. My senses seemed increasingly acute, and they screamed:
Go away.
I grabbed the old laptop, the flash drive and headed for the bus station. The short trip from my house seemed like a long journey. People on the street looked at me with strange faces, the cell phone kept ringing with unknown numbers on the screen and a strange idea began to formulate in my head that whispered “Them, Valeria is one of Them”.
Already on the platforms I rummaged through my backpack where I confirmed that I had the key to the family beach house in San Luis, 60 km to the east of Montevideo. I turned off my cell phone, got on a bus heading to another and much far away town called Treinta y Tres. Sat near the last seat and slipped my cell phone in my front pocket of the seat in front of me, got off and commented to the driver with a clueless face, “I got confused, I'm going to the coast”.
I almost jumped onto the steps of the correct bus to where I was heading, unable to avoid the gazes of the passengers questioning me for the last minute drop in. I sat in my numbered seat and defragmented in dissociation, trying to understand what I was doing, I was running away, but from what?
The images of the last transcriptions were engraved in my mind, the last paragraph was repeated over and over again making me shake my head from time to time trying to get them away from my thoughts. The road was dark and I lost track of time, the digital clock within sight of the passengers jingling since we left, reading 10:40.
“San Luis Station!” - I heard the guard's shout in low volume.
I staggered to my feet, hurried to get off and with the same impulse I entered the dirt roads.
I zig-zagged through the dark, cold and silent beach town. The moonless night and the smell of the sea calmed me.
When I turned the corner to the gabled beach house of my family, on the steps of the front door lit by a white light, was her. Sitting, waiting for me. I stopped dead in my tracks and a chilling vertigo ran down my torso to my throat. We looked at each other for a short two seconds, until she stopped and started walking in sliding steps towards me, smiling and playing with her hands, crossing and uncrossing her arms. The growing sound of the wind through the trees covered us.

I have 2 luxury bags that I only use for nice occasions like dinners, events etc. I do travel with them and keep them in the dust bag when I travel but I keep the bags in my hand luggage as they are too fancy/small to be travel bags.
I just purchased an LV Pochette Métis in the monogram which I want for more casual use. I’m going on a girls trip and plan to take the bag with me as my handbag on the flight. I feel gross storing it under the seat back when I’m so careful with my other bags.

I did my best, although I arrived quite late. I might not have experienced the event as it was meant to as everything was closing down or had already closed. Still, I could infer and asked around what had been. Definitely do not regret the event! Several things had actually been quite amazing. Certain things were -meh😒- but we should stop thinking like that! If just one thing changed your life the whole itinerary was justified haha!
Firstly there was a caravan outside, called the ‘Digital Caravan’. I asked the guy what it was; he told me, ‘c'est zis ene caravan..’ 🤯 (‘it's just a caravan; nothing to see here’ 😅). Don't worry, in the end I asked him as many questions as possible to understand what all was about! xD
So they had this VR kit with two nunchucks (basically two controllers for holding in your hands). Nothing too fancy just the Meta Quest 2. A good starting point for exploring Virtual Reality. The graphics were like the Playstation 3. I felt quite guilty for playing it since there were a few children who also wanted to; then again they wouldn't have known about it without all the noise I was making! 😅
So he had those plastic toys, which actually weren't toys but 3D printed products. I had heard about 3D printing. He told me he used a material called PLA; a kind of plastic. Upon googling it's actually called Polylactic Acid which by the name it is biodegradable. I don't really like this material. It comes in those wire gauzes and the machine ‘prints’ it layer by layer until you get a figurine. What I disliked about the figure was it had those micro-‘canals’; kinda like a fingerprint. He told me just use papier sablette (sandpaper). But you can't really do that for a detailed structure.
He also had some lego robots programmable with Scratch. He had an app on a tablet connected to the robot for doing that. Scratch is basically a drag-and-drop programming language so I guess kids liked it. Then he had an Arduino microcontroller setup, which is definitely too complicated to explain to a layperson!
I then went inside. Well not inside inside. Just through the first building entrance.
I saw a few gaming rigs, which was where most people gathered -obviously-!
Didn't spend too much time at first, but then came back later having seen everything. They were all playing car games (which I am a great fan of!) So basically they had two motion simulators and I instantly recognised who the guys were! They were the TikTok guys doing Simracing in Mauritius! They're called VS Motion. Their company isn't live yet but will be in 2 months; definitely by the end of the year.
They mostly play Granturismo and Dirt Rally, which is very ample for most Mauritians. So they had two motion simulators, which are platforms that move as you steer the physical wheel. Can have a link to show you how it was like. They weren't letting anyone play. But knowing this track, people would completely swerve and crash the car (probably also the physical rig) if given to a beginner. Daddy always does.
The motion sims were just for demo, but there were about six static rigs with just chair, wheel and TV with Granturismo which were all occupied by little kids. Those wheels are what the company would use when open. They're all Logitech G29's. Even the motion sims were G29. I knew something was off though, seeing how perfectly the boss was driving on the dirt track with just a cheap $300 wheel. But he later told me he is actually a $1500 Fanatec DD (12.5Nm) user! 🤯 Which explains a lot. I hope I befriend him one day, so he lets me use his gear! 😁

Dude works in agriculture. I definitely got a take-away from agriculture! So agriculture has evolved big time since grandpa's days. Grandpas might have lost many a job, but the new generation have found ones that require no less than a university degree. I have not understood the complexity of his industrial setup, but I know the endgame of sugarcane plantation is the efficient placement of water canals in coherence with machine tracks to minimise turns to take to increase the speed of harvesting. This becomes a optimisation problem I think solvable with AI.
Of course each geography is different and you have to actually study the land to engineer it. They do this by actually imaging the land by drone shots then processing the images into a computer to produce a 3D model. Then from there they start building. The kicker is it's actually very simple to image a land and produce a 3D model. There is a software, that you give it an image, and it gives you a 3D model. Best of all, it's FREE! 🤯🤯🤯

Tomatoes have classifications, and those two are in different categories. But there are much more categories. I'm not sure if I've studied them correctly, but tomate is actually called Stupice. And pomme d'amour is called San Marzano.
They're different varieties each in different categories respectively called ‘Globe Tomatoes’ and ‘Plum Tomatoes’. ‘Cherry Tomato’ is yet another category. What Alteo is trying to do is introducing a fourth category of tomatoes called ‘Beefsteak Tomatoes’, which look like small red halloween pumpkins! 🎃 I think they look like a nebula when cut! Although I didn't have the chance to cut them 😏. He says you will also see a new variety of Globe Tomatoes called the Golden Queen, which is literally a yellow tomato!

The rest of the expo was okay. There was Huawei with a generative AI stand. Emtel as usual not-too-sure what it was selling. AI chatbots for your business by another firm. MBC radio was there. A concert stand I guess. Financial Services Commission was organising a hackathon in 2024, although it didn't know how it was going to be so it didn't give any information. It was just collecting ‘interest’. Another 3D printing stand which I missed (don't worry). Some UTM students had made DIY robotics of whom all had been packed down. They were using Arduino. Industrial water monitoring systems with data sent to cloud. Home-use lightbulbs switchable via internet. That's about it 🙁.
BUT! On the whole it was definitely time well spent! 😁
Criticism to the organisers: The marketing seemed like it was going to be a big thing. University of Mauritius, AI this, AI that. But in the end it was (mostly! xD) just a bunch of companies selling things. Let me tell you what went wrong:
On the advertisement, you see so many stickers advertising and praising themselves. You see little marketing explaining the benefits to you, the customer. The marketing was all about them and not about you. Just a little nitpick though. It's really hard to criticise Mauritius where AI is not very prominent and really, has little to give. Honestly, my knowledge of AI is just Mathematics, programming and classification concepts.. which I find very difficult to impart to a layperson.
(Deep inside: Man, I wish I had an AI project to present there. Might have made somebody's day! 🤭)

Hi guys I need a sanity check for the below build.
Critical use case: Video editing, 2x NIC for my workstation and NAS, will be connected by DAC.
2nd use case: Plex. 3 transcoded streams.
3rd use case: seeding my legal Linux distros in separate ?container? that would have vpn running. VPN would cover only this container so qBit. Plex needs to not be covered by the VPN
About build: The hardest thing to pick was motherboard with 16x PCIE lane bifurcated to 2x x8. One for HBA and one for NIC that needs two lanes but they come mainly in x8. Only x4 sata hence HBA. I do not really need HBA but I want at least one drive via HBA. I do not want to connect the HBA and a drive in 4 years and find out that I did not click option 15 during initial Unraid setup and I need to format everything for it to work.
Processor on LGA1700 nothing fancy picked becasue of 770 integrated graphic. Gen 12th so HDR to SDR would work on Windows.
I wanted power consumption to be relatively low, but there were so many other considerations that made no sense picking parts for their power consumption.
System: Unraid and if it makes me cry, Windows 10.
Drives 4x whatever 12TB+ I find on discount. x3 NVME m.2 but it still magic to me if NVMEs need PCIE lanes, and if my NIC would hog 8 lanes and NVMEs would not work or be slow? RAID, ZFE unRaid thingy still have no idea how the NAS will be set up storage wise.
