I’m a wedding planner in Portland, Oregon, who had a wedding in 2019. At that point, I’d been planning weddings professionally for three years. I used that experience to help plan ours.
A few important details about the wedding budget breakdown below:

My partner and I had 19 people (including the two of us) at our wedding. We opted to do this because a lower guest count is typically the most effective way to save a lot of money quickly. If “only” having 19 people at your wedding simply isn’t possible, don’t wander away just yet. Much of the below can be scaled to whatever your headcount is.
It was important to my partner and I to also host an event related to our marriage where our friends could celebrate with us. We opted to host a “friend reception” a month after our wedding. I’ve included pricing for that below in an “optional” section alongside a few other items. If you include these items, are wedding cost above $10,000.
We got married in November. This is considered the start of the slower season for many wedding vendors in my part of the world (Pacific Northwest), which helped lead to lower prices and better availability.
This pricing is from 2019 and yes, prices are higher post-COVID. I’ve seen this change most in the pricing for the house where we got married (more below).

What my wedding cost

Venue: $3,057.32

This was for the ENTIRE HOLIDAY WEEKEND of our wedding (Thursday evening to Monday morning). We got married at a private home on the Oregon Coast.
The ceremony was hosted in the living room of the house. After the ceremony, the caterer “flipped” the room into the reception space by setting up dinner tables and moving the ceremony chairs. After we ate, the caterer removed the tables and chairs and the living area became our dance floor area.
Before we hired the caterer, I made sure to ask if they would order, pick-up, set-up, and clean-up all rentals as it was important to me that this labor be done by someone who wasn’t a guest. (Though guests did end up helping straighten up the house before and after the wedding.)The venue is where I’ve seen the biggest raise in prices post-pandemic. It’s now closer to $4,500 for the same length of time over the same holiday.

Catering (including rentals and 20 percent tip): $3,314.64

This was our biggest line item because it was also our most important (we wanted really tasty food!). The catering order included:

a salad, roasted veggies, dinner rolls, roasted chicken, and a charcuterie and cheese display ($1,452)
a keg of caterer-made apple cider ($79)
plates, spoons, forks, glasses, gold Chivari chairs, wine glasses, white tablecloths, three folding tables, and gold napkins ($391.20)
three staff members (a chef, a lead server, and a server; $840)

We also elected to do a tasting with six people including us as a thank-you to those people for their support of our wedding. We paid for this separately; I can’t find the cost but know it was under $200. I didn’t include the tasting cost in the total below as it was pretty optional.

Dessert: $119.50

We ordered 10 ice cream pints from our favorite ice cream shop and had one of our guests pick this up on their way to the wedding.

Decor: $51.95

For us, this meant a box of gold votives ($31.98, Amazon) and thank-you notes ($19.97, Amazon). A couple of guests also created a “light curtain” (i.e. a step-and-repeat frame with tulle and fairy lights) to hide the TV that was mounted on the wall in the room where we got married. I don’t have pricing for that but estimate it cost $25 to $35 to make; I didn’t include this number in the total.

Dress: $1,050

This includes the (very minimal) alterations I needed.

Dress accessories: $106.19

This was mainly cute hair stuff and four pairs of shoes for me (two I didn’t use and two I did).

Favors: $64

For favors, we bought individual jars of locally made honey for people to use at dinner. The favors also served as place cards. Each jar had the name of a specific guest, as designed by the business where we bought the honey.

Flowers: $385

We bought our flowers “à la carte,” which is an option many florists offer where you “just” buy the flowers you need. This works best if you don’t need extensive decor flowers and “only” want flowers you wear or carry.For us, that meant:

a bouquet for me ($140)
a boutonnière for my partner ($10)
three bouquets for our wedding party ($150)
some lengths of eucalyptus and long-stem flowers to use as ceremony decor ($85)

The four bouquets became the centerpieces on our long banquet-style dinner table, using the vases that we bought from the florist.
We traveled to our venue the Wednesday before our wedding and picked up our flowers on our way out of town (the wedding was on Saturday). To keep the flowers fresh, I:

told our florist the length of time between pick-up and the wedding so the florist could prioritize using flowers that have a longer shelf life, and
we kept our flowers in a cool area (the garage of the rental home; could also have been a fridge if the weather had been warmer).

I don’t know if the guest who paid for this vendor tipped them, which is why I didn’t include that information above.

Hair and/or makeup: est. $150

I can’t find the actual cost but I did a one-hour tutorial with a makeup stylist and then did my own hair and makeup on the wedding day as did all of our wedding VIPs who use makeup and/or wanted to style their hair a certain way. I was very happy with the results!
The number above also includes my rough guess for how much I spent on new makeup I bought especially for the wedding (but also used after the wedding, too).

Photographer: $375

We hired a photographer for their “elopement” package even though we weren’t technically eloping. (You can 100 percent do this as long as you’re honest with your vendors about your guest count, i.e. the main metric they use to decide if your event qualifies for any elopement pricing they offer.)
This choice meant we had the photographer for two hours (vs. the more standard six to 12 hours people hire photographers for on a wedding day).
To make this work, we prioritized having the photographer on-site starting 30 minutes before for the ceremony and leaving once post-ceremony photos were done. This meant skipping a first look and instead seeing each other for the first time in our wedding clothes at the start of the ceremony.
The photographer was also not on-site for any photos of us getting ready or for any reception programming. Instead, if anybody wanted photos of us getting dressed, having dinner, doing toasts, dancing, and/or eating dessert, they took them with their phones. This worked very well for us! We don’t feel that we missed any moments.
I don’t know if the guest who paid for this vendor tipped them, which is why I didn’t include that information above.

Suit: $150

My partner bought a suit at H&M and had it tailored. This price includes those alterations.

Wedding rings: $899

We elected to make our own wedding bands with a local metalsmith who offers this option. This price included the half-day workshop where we made our rings as well as all materials. We had very simple designs and used the most affordable gold with no stones or engraving. This price does not include my engagement ring.

Wedding license: $61.20

I’m fairly sure this includes us electing to buy three certified copies of the license for our own records.

Vow writing workshop: $77.54

This was a fun wedding thing I knew about through my job that we did with a professional officiant.
Total: $9,861.34

Additional add-ons

Premarital counseling: $1,000

It was challenging to find a secular option for premarital counseling but find it we did! This was three to five visits (can’t remember the exact number) with a coach who helped us articulate what we loved about our relationship and wanted to carry into our marriage.

Honeymoon: $288.44

Our honeymoon was two days at a hotel in the town where we got married. This was the cost of the hotel.

Friend reception: $250

We rented the backroom of a local pizza place for four hours at $250. This included pizza, salad, and non-alcoholic drinks (which we paid for) and bartender service (our guests bought their own alcoholic drinks at a bar that was in the same room).
Total including these three items: $11,399.78

Common wedding vendor services that I did NOT hire:

Alcohol

Two of our guests gifted us wine for the wedding as their gift to us (very generous, I know). We didn’t serve beer or hard liquor. The caterer provided apple cider (our non-alcoholic option in addition to water and whatever soft drinks we had from the rest of the weekend).

Ceremony and/or reception music and A/V

For the ceremony, we downloaded our processional and recessional songs onto a phone and had a guest play it through a Bluetooth speaker. For the reception, we downloaded a wedding dance playlist and played it off our phone to the speaker. We didn’t use a mic for the officiant or for toasts (a benefit of having a small group, all indoors).

Invites and other paper goods

We combined a save-the-date and invite into one Paperless Post Flyer. We used a free option so this cost $0. We didn’t have any programs and our caterer printed menus for us as part of their fee.

Officiant

One of our guests was our officiant. We didn’t pay him.

Transportation

We got to the venue using personal vehicles and didn’t travel anywhere outside of the house for the wedding so we didn’t need to pay for transportation on the wedding day.

Videographer

We thought about it but ultimately decided this wasn’t for us.

Wedding coordinator or planner

Perhaps ironically given what I do for a living, I didn’t hire a coordinator or planner. Do I regret this? A little. It would have been nice to have someone who wasn’t a guest help the caterer with set-up and clean-up as well as manage things like the ceremony and photos.

I went to Target around 11:00 am this morning, and if you hate crowds, you know the place is probably at it's busiest this time. I've been on a kick with Legos recently, so after knocking some items off my shopping list, I headed to the toy section. As you can expect, it was crawling with screaming and crying kids. I weaved my way between the exhausted parents and tantrum-throwing children to so that I could claim my prize: the flower bouquet. While I was debating on grabbing a second set--the centerpiece flowers--a couple of parents in the aisle were griping about how Legos aren't made for kids anymore and that adults are buying them all up, leaving none for kids. Your disdain for adults who like Legos sparked something in me: it inspired me to buy not just the one set, but instead 3. So what if I'm an adult? I've got the money, time, and energy to focus on my hobbies, so I'm now the proud adult owner of the bouquet flowers, the dried flower centerpiece, and the Disney villain set. I know a lot of us here have a smaller budget, and I wanted to share how we had a 75-person wedding in the Bay Area in April for $23,550.63. This still sounds like so much money to me but in the bay, it's considered a budget wedding! I got so much helpful information from this subreddit and I hope someone with a similar budget finds this post helpful! Overall we were thrilled with our wedding and while it was stressful to plan, a smaller budget didn't stop us from having the time of our lives.

What this breakdown does NOT include:

Engagement ring, honeymoon, joint bach party, wine (gifted), cocktail hour snacks (gifted), and of course, we did not pay for our families' priceless labor for event set up and break down.

The Breakdown

Venue	6805	Piedmont Community Hall	Venue alone costs $5270. We paid for extra time ($530), teahouse we used as a bridal suite ($475), and amphitheater which we got married in ($375). $175 was for insurance.
Photography	1900	St. Sure Photography	This covered 7 hours. Kristin was the best. She helped keep everyone on time and organized and is hilarious. I highly recommend! She was able to accommodate my huge family in limited time and the photos are so so beautiful. Her pricing is cheaper than a lot of other photographers in the area but her skills are just as good.
DJ	1300	GoodTime DJ	This covered 6 hours. Our ceremony was outside and reception was inside. Mark set up in both locations and everything ran smoothly. Mark was overall great to work with and we got compliments on our playlist. Also highly recommend!
Bartender	1200	-	Not going to name or recommend this vendor. I will say we found them through an independent contractor website, not a bigger company. We found their info on a site for contractors. They said this price included glassware for 75 people, but day of they came with no glassware, just plastic cups! Had I known, I would have added glassware onto the party rentals. The bartender also stole a few bottles of wine at the end of the night. If they had asked, I'd gladly give them some, but it was just so weird to take them without permission. They served the alcohol and helped with cocktail hour clean up just fine.
Party Rentals	1573	AM Party Rentals	This included drop off and pick up of all linens, napkins, dishes, silverware, and drinking glasses for 75 people. At the end of the night, dirty dishes and linens went back into the containers they came in. Super easy!
Alcohol	513.84	-	Champagne (378.20) and Costco beer (135.64). Red and white wine was gifted.
Florals	609.11	Events by Litsa	This included 1 bridal bouquet, 4 bridesmaids bouquets, and 4 boutonnieres. I found photos of Litsa's bouquets on her website and asked her to create something for me. She did great and totally nailed what I was going for. For centerpieces, I bought roses, baby's breath, and eucalyptus from Trader Joe's which were put together by family.
Cupcakes	400	Kara's Cupcakes	75 normal cupcakes, 5 vegan, and 5 gluten free. No complaints! Super easy to order and delicious.
Tux + alterations	500	Men's Warehouse	My fiance opted to buy a suit that he would wear again instead of a tux rental.
Dress	1642.63	BHLDN	I absolutely loved my dress and felt like a princess. I tried dresses on at David's bridal and BHLDN. Both were great experiences. BHLDN was a little nicer in that they offered us champagne. My shoes were like 20 bucks from Target.
Dress alterations	700	Seamless Seamstress	Stephanie was recommended to me by BHLDN and came to my house for alterations - once to pin and measure and once for a final try on. I really liked the convenience and she did an amazing job. She created a bustle that truly complimented the dress. She also added cups for the top and adjusted the straps.
Hair and makeup	900	Brushed by Ngan	300 was for the trial and 600 was for day of. I was so happy with my hair and makeup. It felt a little heavy (I don't normally wear makeup) but looks perfect in the photos and lasted the entire night. Ngan was really sweet and friendly as well.
Wedding rings	250	Etsy
Stationary	440.91	Minted	Save the dates and invites were from Minted. Kind of pricey but they were pretty and I liked the printed envelopes. Spent like 20 bucks on Amazon for thank you cards.
Catering	1642.43	Chef Gillys	Tacos, toppings, rice, beans, chips/salsa, horchata, and lemonade for 75 people. They were able to accommodate vegan, vegetarian, and gluten-free. They stayed on site and served buffet style. We got a lot of compliments on the food! No one gets upset over tacos.
Gifts for wedding party	400		$50 per person - I did Lush gift boxes and he did custom duffel bags.
Rehearsal dinner	720	Grill Kebabs and Gyros	We picked up a catering order after rehearsal and had the dinner at our house. Love this little restaurant! Total was 600 + tip
Tips for vendors	500		2 servers, 2 bartenders, and MUA each got $100
Amazon	1553.51		Various things for the wedding including decor, guest book, card box, flower girl/ ring bearer things, polaroid stuff, coffee/tea bar items, and mini planter boxes (I propagated plants as gifts). Table centerpieces were simple- just wood slices, candles, and vases.
TOTAL	23550.63

Notes:

Parking at this venue is first come first serve and then there is street parking. Our guests didn't seem to have any issues finding parking and everyone made it on time. The venue includes set up and breakdown of all tables and chairs and has staff on site to keep the public out.
We got married in April, which gets cold around 4pm in the spring. We had our ceremony super quick outside and cocktail hour and reception inside. There was also a chance it would rain so it was nice to have an indoor venue.
We relied SO MUCH on help from family for set up and breakdown. This is an absolute necessity for a budget wedding. And they were happy to do it! You'd be surprised how many people want to help you on your wedding day.
My MIL acted as wedding coordinator-also a necessity! She took care of all of the vendors and created our cocktail spread (fruit, veggies, cheese, meat, crackers) and cupcake tower. She directed vendors and table/ centerpiece set up and breakdown. We didn't stress about anything day-of. She is an absolute angel and we couldn't have done it without her. We considered a day-of coordinator had she not been able to do this.
One bridesmaid is in the wine industry and gifted us all red and white wine. We bought champagne and beer from Costco.
Another bridesmaid is an artist by trade and did a lot of the DIY crafts, including a seating chart, table numbers, and a wedding sign to put outside.
All bridesmaids and groomsmen bought their own attire. Bridesmaids did their own hair and makeup.
Independent contractors can be really helpful for budgeting, however we had a bad experience with our bartender, which I didn't name here. Something to keep in mind. Most of our other vendors were also independent contractors and did an amazing job. Don't forget to leave reviews if you liked their service!
Budgeting means you can't have everything you want! We opted to spend money on things that were important to us and cut corners on things that were not as important. I wanted to feel like a Disney princess so I spent $3000 on my day-of look. I didn't care about fancy food, just that people were fed and the food was tasty, so we spent $1600 on tacos. You do you! It's your party!

Things we could have done to make it even cheaper:

David's Bridal had some beautiful dresses in a variety of sizes that would have cost $500 after alterations.
A potluck-style rehearsal dinner would have saved money on catering.
I could have DIY'ed for less: Haimakeup, invitations, bouquets, wedding party gifts, and cake
We paid a little extra to have the owner of the DJ company be our DJ. If we used his assistant it would have been a few hundred cheaper.
Could have used disposable cups, plates, napkins, and silverware
The venue hall alone was only $5250 which would be enough for the ceremony and reception. We added on the amphitheater, which is where the ceremony took place, and teahouse, which we used as a bridal suite.
We also considered the Fort Mason Firehouse ($5k) and Stern Grove in GGP (under $5k)
We got married on a Saturday but the venue has lower pricing on Friday and Sunday.
I spent way too much panic buying on Amazon last-minute. A lot of "just in case" purchases that could have been avoided with better planning.

Hi everyone! I am getting married in October of 2025 in a really beautiful North Carolina mountain venue. The venue is a converted lumber mill with so much beautiful woodwork and a ceremony space overlooking the mountains. I am in the very early stages of planning, but I’m definitely struggling with inspiration for bouquets and centerpieces.
I want the primary color scheme to be emerald and white/champagne because I think it would look great in the fall/with wood finished. My lack of inspiration comes from the bouquets and other florals, because I can’t decide what to go with that would look good with an emerald green (besides white obviously). I guess I was hoping to have SOME color other than white in there, but I truly can’t think of anything else that would look good. Anyone have any good ideas? Thank you!
Side note- as a fun hobby, my dad and I started about an acre cut flower garden this year in hopes that maybe we will be able to use SOME of these flowers within my decor! We figured, if it succeeds, it would be cool to incorporate some of them into the day (and save some money :) lol) and if it fails, then at least we had fun!

I'm DIYing sola wood flowers and centerpieces for my wedding this Nov and wanted to share a list of items and the step-by-step process. I hope this helps anyone else looking to DIY their flowers on a budget.
I'm doing a bridal bouquet, 3 bridesmaids bouquets, 4 boutonnieres, 4 corsages and 9 bouquet centerpieces. Here's what I bought:
400 random assorted sola wood flowers from Luv Sola Flowers: $112
5 containers of sample paint from Lowe's: $35
40 pieces of artificial eucalyptus from Walmart.com: $14
Equate no scent glycerin, 6 oz (Walmart): $5
Hyper Tough 800' twine (Walmart): $6.50
30-pack of mini glue sticks and a mini glue gun (Walmart): $6
3-pack of floral tape (Walmart): $2.50
400 count 14 gauge floral stems/wire (Amazon): $23
12 pack battery-operated fairy lights (Amazon): $5.50 on a lightning deal
9 clear mason jars (Facebook marketplace, used): $12
All in all, it was about $225 for all the supplies. Then this weekend I glued and dyed all the flowers and it was super easy (and relaxing, honestly).
Here's what the dye process involved:

Make a small hole in the back of each flower. I actually used a SIM card tool and it worked great.
One at a time, insert the flower stems into the holes, and hot glue around the stem to secure it. If the stem is in the little hole you created, then it should be secure enough to set aside in a pile without having to wait for the glue to cool.
Once you've glued all stems and flowers (roughly 2 hours for my 400 flowers), lay out a tarp for painting.
Take a big cup that will accommodate your flower sizes and scoop some of the Lowe's paint in. Fill with 2-3x as much water, then some glycerin. Mix. I used about 1.5 oz of glycerin per 100 flowers, but this can really vary.
Holding the stem, dip each flower into the paint, bobbing it around a bit to make sure the paint gets into the crevices. Put the painted flower on the tarp to dry.
Repeat for each color you're painting. Adjust/repaint colors as needed if something doesn't come out right. I adjusted two colors as they were too bright for my fall wedding. I used watered-down opposing colors to do this-- for example my red was too vibrant so I used some very watered-down green to make it a softer, more earthy color.
Once the flowers are dry, use wirecutters to trim the stems to desired bouquet length (I did 7-9 inches). Now you can arrange the flowers, wrap the stems in floral tape and twine, and decorate with a ribbon if you want.

my mom bought my dress and veil. my husband bought his suit from etsy. i bought all my centerpieces and decor plus the rental car with my credit card’s rewards points (i started saving them before we got engaged) and a lot of the rest of my decor came from my amazing sister in law, who got married in ‘22 and had leftover florals, fabrics, etc. i splurged on the cupcakes and got my husband a custom vegan wedding cake. i also splurged on my photographer but she was amazing, and ended up photographing from 2:00pm when i started getting ready until after the reception was over!!! the wedding was on saturday and she’s already sent me sneak peeks as she’s editing, so in my opinion it was absolutely worth it. also, the glasses that we used for the centerpieces are actually champagne glasses and matching cups so we will be keeping and reusing them in our home since we didn’t yet have a set of champagne glasses. my bouquet was our centerpiece for our sweetheart table and now it’s on our dining table.
my sister was my officiant. i did the music using playlists i curated and my new sisters in law took turns manning the ipad. i did my own hair and makeup. same sisters in law altered and steamed my dress for me, as well as decorated the venue while i was getting ready. they are AMAZING. my best friend is an esthetician so she did my brows and lashes as a wedding gift. she also bought me a 4•20 inspired makeup palette for christmas that i used to do my makeup. i wore my late grandmother’s pearls, and my brother walked me down the aisle wearing our late father’s tie. the reception was in the same room as the ceremony, we paid for a bar setup and guests bought their own drinks. we also had a cocktail hour with charcuterie and a buffet dinner.
everyone had a great time, it felt very intimate and in my opinion 30 is the absolute perfect size for a wedding. hope this helps future brides!!! this sub was a tremendous help for me.
