Blender and SolidWorks model of 3.18 Litre Gaming PC called the BBC (Black Box Computer)
Front panel skeleton designrear ITX cutout
rear ITX cutout
When we started out to build the BBC it was originally going to be called a "black box" and we were intending to go with a minimalistic design. so there was going to be just lots of black, very featureless and plain. The Crimson Market Logo was going to be the only feature glowing. I wanted to try out the super black paint for some time now. It is really interested to see how everything just disappears and I really wanted to illustrate that with the previous Photo's.
The final build actually has a LCD screen with it, for the smallest PC build however we can add some flat Panels to it. The key to the design is the frame. Its 4 Pieces + riser card bracket. Max print size is 97mm X 182.25mm so most resin printers will do the job just fine.
LCD Screen mounting panel
touching on dimensions - 97mm wide. there is no way to push the GPU and the ITX board closer together, there is no clearance for anything between them without modification. There are screws for the heatsinks and a backplate on the GPU that are adding about 3mm.
It was one of the key design targets that nothing on the PC components would be modified. So when I say the smallest build ever it really sets a Formula 1 style target. I know you can go smaller. 93mm wide unmodified.
front to back there is 10mm from edge of the board to the out perimeter. internally that leaves 3mm for the Power cables to reach around. If i was to rebuild this with the "brick of absolute Zero" I could remove 4.5mm from the front by using a titanium sheet and making custom thin flex cable to join the power. to the back there is 2mm that can be removed. this brings the build to 173.5mm
There is not much to say about top and bottom, 4mm can be removed with metal sheet design. So my theoretical min volume can be 93mm X 173.5 X 178.25 = 2.87L That would be my absolute target with unmodified PC parts.

During bench tests the CPU stayed around 60 degrees C, although these were all GPU tests and stresses. My take on this is the Cooler is surprisingly effective.

Having an electronics background I did shorten some of the cables, especially the CPU cooler I really wanted a clean motherboard. I also spliced the GPU power but would rather ask one our developers who can crimp out custom cables to make them in future.
Someone commented I spent all the money on build instead of lights.... I actually cannibalized an ARGB fan to get the 50X50 LED's inside. Then used a chisel to remove the surface mounted led, solder on the Wires and now The Crimson Market logo glows with a fire effect right off the ARGB header on the motherboard.
The front panel power button was also a special find because it was intended to give the Terminator eye look That too was soldered up.
GPU: This is stock build and the smallest ITX length graphics card is the 4060 , this being the https://www.msi.com/Graphics-Card/GeForce-RTX-4060-AERO-ITX-8G-OC it forces you to be in the dual slot size. you really don't have much room even if you move to a single slot size, the power supply will still chew up the dimension, so this just has that perfect balance. it uses enough space for a decent heat sink but leaves enough for the power supply seen below.
GPU and power
Lastly; the power supply is a https://hdplex.com/hdplex-fanless-250w-gan-aio-atx-psu.html featuring GaN transistors, this is a passive cooled power supply with 250W and 300W peak. The power supply really limits what you can put into the build, as you can go up a little more on the GPU or the CPU but you definitely can't run both hard at once.
One of the design challenges was that I didn't want a cable sticking out, the jug Plug had to be inside and in the 3d design you can see where it goes, it actually holds the GPU in place. so changing the GPU requires removing the power socket. Nice and tight.
in the background there you can see the next build is a massive wall PC, Key words there is ARGBs 7900X + 7900XTX, I do this for fun.
I'll be printing the case again in SuperHDT Resin which is the highest melting point resin I could find at 260 degrees Celsius, before sending it to somebody, the next step will be just start making these in alluminium!
Here is how the Design started out, before it got more complex. https://youtu.be/NhHqChJr3Rg?si=Vy7IcCWi53Oa1wlS

2024.04.27 20:01 Rybka980 Swappable body parts using Skeleton 2D

Hey guys,
I've searched for how this is done, but there is not much explanation and if there is any, it's usually for sprite sheets.
How would I go about having a paperdoll (Skeleton-bone system) with different body parts that I would want to swap (clothing, different hands etc.) so they still work with animations? Do I just make 2D nodes with polygon/sprite nodes of all the clothes and parts, put them over each other, attach bone weights and then just make them (in)visible when needed, or is there a different not as convoluted way?
Also a bit different question. Is it better to have a single image file per character containing all the parts that get cutout using UV points and polygons, or to have individual body parts files. I read that having one bigger file messes up with transformations and positions (and that using transformation instead of offset can create issues), but also that per part file system gets out of hand very quickly.
Thanks for any info!

2024.04.23 04:13 OzymandiasLVS Can somebody help me, please, i tried Everything.

Can somebody help me, please, i tried Everything.
Sorry if this is a stupid question, i'm new at Programming/Game Dev/Godot:
I'm trying to make some 2D Skeletons for my character and the option to make "IK Chain" it's not where it should be.
I looked everywhere, went to the docs.godotengine, read and followed the instructions about Cutout animation, looked at videos teaching rigged 2d animation on Godot, deleted Godot, downloaded again, started new projects, remade the Skeletons and imported the sprites again, tried with other images, i even tried to use Gemini to help me solve this, and still don't show that option, i really don't know what else i can do, already spent all day trying to fix this!
I tried with the sprites loaded directly on the scene and also using 2D Polygons, but none of them worked!
My version of Godot is the 4.2 and has absolutely nothing besides the main engine.
OBS: if anyone have any videos or free E-books about rigged 2D animations on TopDown isometric characters for 8-directions movements on Godot, it would help me a lot, I am also looking like crazy for anything that can help me learn how to do this, and i only find 2D platform ones, or 3D, and it doesn't help me much!
Initially, i was doing full 2D animation, frame to frame, but i will need to make a "Look At" aim for the characters and didn't find a way to avoid Rigged 2D animations for that...so...

2024.04.05 18:27 VoiderOfWarranties One Man’s Bingo is Another Man’s Bingo: Books I Read for 2023 Bingo and What Categories YOU can Use Them For in 2024!

I usually start my Bingo planning sometime in January or February, playing mix and match with the pile of books I’ve already read that year and then figuring out what I’ll need to scramble to finish in time to fill the five or six squares for which I couldn’t find any matches. This post is for everyone who’s better at planning ahead than I.
This was the first year I’ve started writing down thoughts on books I’ve read (thank you to the Bingo Hero Mode button for shaming me each year I did not), and I’m very glad I began. Taking some time to reflect on each book has done a lot to force me to consume media more critically, and I think that I’ve gotten much more out reading this year than I would have if I’d read the same books without reviewing.
Some disclaimers: the books below are grouped by tier, but not necessarily ordered within each tier. For 2024 categories, I did my best to remember stuff like number of POV characters and whatnot, and looked back when I could to check for the trickier to recall squares: prologues and epilogues, dreams, reference materials, etc. Despite my best efforts I’ve certainly failed to list all the potential categories for every book, and likely listed a few that don’t belong, so buyer beware.
I don’t believe I read anything at all for 2023 that could count for Orcs, Trolls, and Goblins, Published in 2024, or Dark Academia. For Judge a Book by its Cover, I really like the covers for Untethered Sky, The Adventures of Amina al-Sirafi, Chain Gang All-Stars, and Don’t Bite the Sun. The last two in particular would have fulfilled the category for me had it existed in last year’s Bingo.

Books I Loved

Gods of the Wyrdwood, by R.J. Barker I read it for: Druid (HM) - perhaps stretching the definition, but I thought it fit. 2024 Possibilities: First in a Series, Criminals, Prologues and Epilogues (HM), Multi-POV, arguably Eldritch Creatures (HM), Reference Materials.
R.J. Barker is an absolute wizard at marrying worldbuilding with characterization and narrative. Many authors create imaginative worlds that are in reality just new polities or magic systems papered over a world fundamentally similar to our own, and then populate it with characters who seem to take the same axioms of life for granted as we do. Not so in Barker’s equally excellent Tide Child books, and not so here - the world of the Wyrdwood is a truly foreign one, and the people that populate it feel as if they are genuine products of that world, steeped in all its alien mores and expectations.
I was enraptured by Gods of the Worldwood from start to finish, and will be reading the sequel as soon as it comes out this fall.
Between Two Fires, by Christopher Buehlman I read it for: Horror (HM) 2024 Possibilities: Dreams, Prologues and Epilogues (HM), Survival, arguably Eldritch Creatures (HM).
I’d never thought of myself as a horror guy, so to have this square produce a contender for my favorite book of the year was a delightful surprise. Between Two Fires is weird; it’s on the one hand an extensively researched book about the disintegration of society during the real life Black Death in medieval France, while on the other being a story about biblical Satan and the hordes of hell romping around Earth while they think God’s not watching. It’s got monsters galore, it’s got people acting just as bad as the horror monsters that surround them, it’s got a truly insane ending that I will not spoil here. It’s phenomenal.
A Conspiracy of Truths, by Alexandra Rowland I read it for: Queernorm Setting (HM) 2024 Possibilities: First in a Series, Under the Surface (I think?), Criminals, Bards, Dreams (HM), Reference Materials, Book Club.
Chant, the main character, belongs to an order of itinerant storytellers, who traverse the world learning stories from each culture and telling those stories to all those who want to hear them. While we get to hear a great number of these stories, we do not get to see many of the cultures that spawn them, as Chant is arrested before the book even starts, and spends essentially the entire time moving from one place of captivity to another, frantically trying to weasel, horse trade, and manipulate his way to freedom.
I’m a sucker for stories about stories and about storytelling, and about the way societies treat stories and storytellers. A Conspiracy of Truths was basically made for me. I loved the unconventionally static setting of the book, the glimpses of fantastic realms we see through Chant’s storytelling, and most of all the steadily growing loss of sympathy I felt for Chant and his actions throughout the book.

Books I Liked A Lot

The Sarantine Mosaic, by Guy Gavriel Kay I read it for: Mundane Jobs (HM) 2024 Possibilities: First in a Series (Sailing to Sarantium), Dreams (HM), Prologues and Epilogues (HM), Multi-POV (HM), Published in the 90s (HM).
Note: I read the omnibus edition of the duology, and counted it as one work for things like POV characters, prologue/epilogue, etc.
Guy Gavriel Kay is deservedly well-regarded and pops up frequently in the discourse of this subreddit, so I won’t bother reviewing in too much detail. For those who enjoy Kay’s formula of history with a “quarter turn to the fantastic,” this is a first class addition to his oeuvre, probably my favorite of his after The Lions of Al-Rassan. For those who don’t, it’s more of the same.
One Hundred Years of Solitude, by Gabriel García Márquez I read it for: Magical Realism 2024 Possibilities: Dreams (HM), Author of Color, Set in a Small Town.
It’s billed as an all-time classic, and I think it lives up to that promise. Not much more to say that hasn’t been said a thousand times before. The guy won a Nobel Prize for Literature for crying out loud.
Labyrinth’s Heart, by M.A. Carrick I read it for: Sequel 2024 Possibilities: Dreams, Criminals, Prologues and Epilogues (HM), Romantasy, Multi-POV, Reference Materials (HM).
I read all three books in this trilogy back-to-back (the first one counts for First in a Series!) and they all blended together, so this is more just musings on the trilogy as a whole.
The Mask and Mirror trilogy is really dang good. It’s got crime and conspiracy galore, one of the most fascinatingly nuanced cultures I’ve ever read for a fictional city, plots that are satisfyingly contained within each book but nonetheless well foreshadowed and connected across the trilogy, an excellent romance, found family, the works. I liked this series enough that I spent a good half hour after finishing it with Wikipedia and Google Maps trying to find the real city that Nadežra is based on (I’m pretty sure it’s Zadar, Croatia). I think the trilogy taken together would get bumped up to the Books I Loved category.
My one nitpick would be with the sheer number of lies and secret identities that pile up on one another. For the most part they are tense and gripping, or sometimes absurd enough to be hilarious, but once in a while it felt like there was just one layer too much and the actual plot was getting lost as everyone stumbled around in a haze trying to uncover each other’s secrets.
The Rook, by Daniel O'Malley I read it for: Title with a Title (HM) 2024 Possibilities: First in a Series, Dreams, Character with a Disability (HM), Book Club. Could make arguments for Survival (HM), and the letter but not the spirit of the law for Entitled Animals (the title refers to the chess piece, which appears to be etymologically unrelated to the bird).
Does anyone know what’s going on in Britain that makes all their urban fantasy about how the supernatural is very real and very scary, but not nearly so scary as the inevitable governmental bureaucracy that deals with it? I’m not sure, but between this and Charles Stross’ even-bleaker Laundry Files series I can’t say I’m eager to follow any career paths that might lead me into civil service across the pond.
Engagingly written, with a strong pair of mysteries that each unravel the other - who is the traitor in the Checquy, and who was Myfanwy Thomas before she lost her memory? Amnesia stories can be very tricky to pull off, but I thought this one was handled excellently.
The Justice of Kings, by Richard Swan I read it for: Book Club OR Readalong Book 2024 Possibilities: First in a Series, Dreams, Bards (technically, due to the framing device), Prologues and Epilogues, Character with a Disability (alcoholism), Eldritch Creatures (HM), Reference Materials.
I don’t know that the Empire of the Wolf books are for everyone, but they were certainly for me. The central theme of the books revolves around the relationship between law and empire - how the benefits of law can or cannot justify the sins of empire, and whether the protections of the law can remain in place even as the empire which built it collapses.
For all the action-horror of the books themselves, there’s a lot of philosophy going on throughout. Despite one thematic choice regarding the overall cosmology of the world in the third book that I thought undermined an unfortunate amount of the trilogy’s main thesis, I spent more time thinking about these books after finishing them than I did just about anything else I read this year.
Don't Bite the Sun, by Tanith Lee I read it for: Features Robots 2024 Possibilities: First in a Series, Under the Surface, Dreams (HM), Character With a Disability (HM), Reference Materials (HM).
This is a quick little novel, as a lot of pre-90’s sci fi tends to be. I read it on a bit of a whim, based on the phenomenal title and cover and a vague recollection that I’d been meaning to read something by Tanith Lee. I have rarely if ever felt so attacked in my life as I did reading this book. Though it was written nearly half a century ago, reading it felt like Lee had spent years tapping into my brain during the most listlessly depressive time of my college years.

Books I Liked

The Left Hand of Darkness, by Ursula K. Le Guin I read it for: Bottom of the TBR (HM) 2024 Possibilities: Survival, Book Club, Dreams, Reference Materials.
It’s always a bit of an odd thing, reading a groundbreaking work with the benefit of decades of hindsight and societal growth. No one would call The Left Hand of Darkness revolutionary if it was published today. Changes in how we use pronouns to delineate gender, two and a half whole waves of feminism shifting expectations of the roles of both men and women in society, and countless other little anachronisms combine to make a lot of the book feel archaic. Yet the core of the novel - the examination and questioning of the functions that gender and gender roles play in a society - remains surprisingly fresh.
I felt like I did this book a bit of a disservice in how I read it; work was very hectic at the time and I only managed to get through it in little sips and spurts, which made it difficult to get into the flow of things. I think if I had been able to read it in longer sittings it would have jumped up a tier.
Untethered Sky, by Fonda Lee I read it for: Mythical Beasts (HM) 2024 Possibilities: Author of Color.
Something in my paleolithic pack-bonding DNA always enjoys a good boy-and-his-dog story, and Untethered Sky is an excellent addition to that genre. In this example, the boy is an orphaned young woman named Ester, and the dog is a roc - a massive bird of prey trained to hunt and kill the man-eating manticores would otherwise kill with impunity across the kingdom, the same creatures that killed Ester’s family. Though there is good stuff about Ester’s coming of age and her friendships and fallings-out with her fellow roc-tamers, the core of the story lies with the tenuous bond of trust and love between Ester and her own roc, and what happens when the cruelties of the world test that bond.
The Adventures of Amina Al-Sirafi, by Shannon Chakraborty I read it for: Coastal or Island Setting (HM) 2024 Possibilities: First in a Series (Depending on the release date of book 2), Alliterative Title (HM), Criminals, Book Club or Readalong Book, Dreams (HM), Prologues and Epilogues (HM), Reference Materials (HM).
I’ve always felt like there are two major axes along which I rate my enjoyment of books: the amount of fun I had reading them, and the amount they made me think. By pure fun, this was one of my favorite books of the year. It’s a delightful nautical romp, a getting-the-band-back-together story with a genre-appropriately colorful cast of characters, a despicable villain, and enough skeletons in everyone’s closets to fill a graveyard. It got put in this tier because it was only that. I had a great time reading it while I was reading it, but as soon as I finished it vanished from my brain. I’ll be excited to read the forthcoming sequel when I’m in the mood for another romp, but I’ll most likely need to read a plot summary of this one before doing so.
Thornhedge, by T. Kingfisher I read it for: Myths and Retellings (HM) 2024 Possibilities: Under the Surface, Dreams (HM), Prologues and Epilogues.
Thornhedge was not the first fairy tale retelling or pastiche I’ve read by Kingfisher, and, so long as she keeps writing them, it will not be the last. Her style falls comfortably in the middle ground between the poles of the often dark and moralizing tales of the brothers Grimm and their ilk and the much more saccharine happily-ever-afters of Disney. Thornhedge, like her other works, retains that classic fairy tale aura while still feeling fresh and grounded in the modern day, avoiding the pitfalls of both tired retreads and gratuitous edginess.
The Killing Moon, by N.K. Jemisin I read it for: Middle Eastern SFF 2024 Possibilities: First in a Series, Criminals, Dreams, Author of Color, Prologues and Epilogues, Multi-POV.
I came into The Killing Moon with high expectations - both her Inheritance Trilogy and Broken Earth books rank among my all time favorites, and I hoped that The Killing Moon would be similarly spectacular. Unfortunately, while there is some genuinely excellent stuff to be found here, it’s often stifled by the book’s unfortunate pacing and lack of focus. It felt like Jemisin had two major themes she wanted to explore, but the book ended up not being big enough to contain both of them. If it had been a third again as long, it could have done justice to each, and if it had been slashed by a third she could have really honed in on just one, but as it was the whole thing felt all over the place and frustratingly dissolute. The book’s problems did not prevent me from liking it, but they did prevent me from loving it, and were all the more aggravating for how truly brilliant her other books are.
A Shadow in Summer, by Daniel Abraham I read it for: Published in the 00s (HM) 2024 Possibilities: First in a series (HM), Alliterative Title, Eldritch Creatures (HM), Dreams (HM), Prologues and Epilogues, Multi-POV (HM), Reference Materials.
This was more or less the polar opposite of The Killing Moon for me - an extremely well crafted book by an author I had only middling expectations of. However, despite being technically impressive, it was frankly a bit too heavy for me to enjoy wholeheartedly. The entire book revolves around selfish and power hungry people doing terrible things to others in pursuit of their own goals, and features a nonstop carousel of grim topics - slavery, sexual exploitation, industrialized child abuse, genocide, and of course the plot’s central conspiracy - tricking an innocent woman into having an abortion without her consent or knowledge in order to drive a man to suicide. Yeesh.
Lent, by Jo Walton I read it for: Angels and Demons (HM) 2024 Possibilities: Criminals (if you count excommunication), Dreams.
What a delightfully odd book! Groundhog Day, set in a meticulously researched and lovingly portrayed late-fifteenth century Florence. The pacing was so wack as to be essentially absent, the acceptance of Girolamo’s friends when he explains his situation to them in each subsequent life was difficult to credit, and the ending made little sense, but this was the kind of book that’s so wonderfully unlike anything else I’ve read as to make all the little flaws seem negligible by comparison.
The Will of the Many, by James Islington I read it for: Multiverse and Alternate Realities (HM) 2024 Possibilities: First in a Series (depending on sequel release date), Under the Surface, Criminals, Dreams (HM), Prologues and Epilogues, Reference Materials (HM).
I thought this was pretty good! I didn’t think it was great, and the level of buzz I saw after reading it myself took me aback a little, but I certainly enjoyed it. The majority of the book is really just paint-by-numbers magic school/dystopia stuff, executed competently but mostly forgettable beyond the fun quasi-roman trim. The ending, however, took a hard left turn into some much weirder and more interesting stuff. I’ll be reading the sequel and hoping that the series as a whole will be following that last-minute swerve.
Burning Chrome, by William Gibson I read it for: Five SFF Short Stories (HM) 2024 Possibilities: Five SFF Short Stories (HM), the titular novella qualifies for Criminals (HM).
Pretty hit or miss, frankly. There were some excellent stories, some that probably were excellent but have not held up so well to the progress of technology or society, and some that were just not for me. I’m glad I read it, as there’s a lot in there that you can tell played a big role in setting the foundations for cyberpunk as a whole, but there wasn’t much that really hit me right in the gut the way the best SFF short fiction can.
Houston, Houston, Do You Read?, by James Tiptree, Jr. I read it for: SFF Novella (HM) 2024 Possibilities: Alliterative Title.
Speaking of the best SFF short fiction, let’s talk about James Tiptree, Jr. I realized while writing these reviews that I screwed up how I shuffled things around for Bingo submission: I ought to have put something else in this category and bumped Burning Chrome out of it’s Short Stories slot in favor of Her Smoke Rose Up Forever, the transcendent Tiptree collection in which I read Houston. James Tiptree, Jr. was a pseudonym wielded by one Alice Sheldon, and as I lack the space to give her wild life the detail it deserves, I encourage you to at least glance through her Wikipedia article.
Houston is a good novella that has the rotten luck to be ruthlessly outshone by its neighbors, collected as it is in one of the best short story collections I’ve ever read. Tiptree’s writing is sharp, incisive, sometimes even cruel in peeling back skin to reveal rottenness beneath. Far from seeming dated, as so many works in Burning Chrome did, the bulk of the stories in here are either timeless, or else only strengthened by the passage of time. Reading Burning Chrome lets the reader see how much society has changed; reading Her Smoke Rose Up Forever forces the reader to acknowledge how much it has remained the same. The collection as a whole belongs up in the Books I Loved category.
Nova, by Samuel R. Delany I read it for: POC Author (HM) 2024 Possibilities: Bards, Character with a Disability, Author of Color, Space Opera.
Nova is a lot, in a lot of ways. It’s intentionally grand, explicitly hearkening back to things like the Grail Quest of Arthurian legend and the Argonauts' hunt for the Golden Fleece, and deals with events meant to indelibly transform the power structures of an interstellar society. It elevates notions of omen and fate to equal status with technology and free will. Every character feels larger than life, more archetypal than individual. Yet it packs all this into less than three hundred pages, split between events both past and present. As a result, specifics of plot and character are often revealed more in broad outline than they are in detail, and the whole book is sort of impressionist, more reminiscent of a myth told by the fire-side than a traditional novel.
Hench, by Natalie Zina Walschotts I read it for: Superheroes (HM) 2024 Possibilities: First in a Series, Criminals (HM), Bards, Character with a Disability (HM, but perhaps not in the spirit of things), Book Club/Readalong, Dreams (HM).
Hench left me torn - the premise of an outraged victim of collateral damage going on a crusade to prove that “heroes” cause far more damage than they prevent is a great one, particularly as American society continues to reckon with its relationship with policing. However, the way it actually approaches that premise, and particularly the ending, were not always as coherent as they could have been. The book often seemed torn as to how much it wanted Anna to be a Good Guy rather than just a protagonist, and this caused some weird narrative tension as her character arc of fully becoming a supervillain in her own right progressed. By the end of the book that question still feels muddy, and while things are set up for an interesting sequel I think it undermines the ability of Hench to stand on its own merits.
The Captain, by Will Wight I read it for: Self-Published/Indie Author 2024 Possibilities: First in a Series, Self-Pub/Indie, Prologues and Epilogues, Reference Materials
The Captain just barely made the cut for the Books I Like tier, and was saved more by the amount I didn’t enjoy reading my bottom three books than by its own merit. I enjoyed Wight’s previous Cradle books on that same Fun vs Thinking axis as Amina al-Sirafi - they are a lot of fun, but not much else. I still had some fun with The Captain, but this time it was not enough to make up for the lack of else. My central issue with the book is its departure from the formula I read Cradle for: Varic starts out literally from page one as one of the most powerful people in the galaxy, and kind of breezes his way through most everything he encounters. Sure, there are even more powerful threats on the horizon, but the fact that he’s topped out already makes each one feel like it’s going to be a puzzle rather than a journey to overcome them. I know Wight can write great journeys, but I haven’t yet seen the same appeal in the puzzles.

Books I Did Not Like

Chain-Gang All Stars, by Nana Kwame Adjei-Brenyah I read it for: Published in 2023 (HM) 2024 Possibilities: Criminals, Multi-POV (HM), Character with a Disability, Author of Color (HM), Survival (HM), Dreams (HM), Prologues and Epilogues, Reference Materials
I did not like reading Chain-Gang All Stars, but I didn’t dislike it as a book either. It has a lot of decent stuff and a lot of less enjoyable stuff that didn’t really do much to offset one another - the good was good, and the bad was bad, so it was hard to come up with a definitive final rating. Lots of thinking, no fun at all.
Adjei-Brenyah did a tremendous amount of research in order to make sure that all of his characters and the abuses and injustices they suffered closely parallel real events that happen daily throughout America - false accusations, racial sentencing disparities, guard-inflicted brutality in prisons, and countless other atrocities that make our carceral system a national embarrassment. However, the way that the explicating footnotes were so densely strewn throughout the text felt patronizing, like Adjei-Brenyah was afraid that without them we wouldn’t get that this fictional book about the barbarity of the American justice system was (gasp) actually about barbarity of the REAL American justice system! Perhaps I’m coming from a place of too much optimism, but I feel like I would have gotten it either way. Then again, while I might have “gotten it” regardless of whether the real names and stories were interleaved with the fiction, those real names and stories deserve to be heard, and putting them in footnotes made them much less likely to be skimmed through than had they been confined to an introduction or author’s note.
Ironically enough, the most frustrating part of Chain-Gang All Stars was the stuff that dealt with the gladiatorial combats directly. Adjei-Brenyah writes the combat in voyeuristic, even pornographic, levels of detail in order to force the reader into the same point of view as those in the story who eagerly consume deadly combat like any other sport. The problem is that it’s just… not very good to read. The fighters’ gimmicks and WWE-like personas, the slog of pages that are just people repetitively hacking into one another, it all felt lackluster. I’m not much of a combat sports guy, but I couldn’t imagine the nation becoming so hooked on this redwash drudgery that everyone just became ok with the death and cruelty involved.
Fourth Wing, by Rebecca Yaros I read it for: Young Adult (HM) 2024 Possibilities: First in a Series, Romantasy, Character with a Disability (HM), Survival (HM), Dreams (HM), Reference Materials.
My least favorite post on this sub and /books this year was the clone army of self-congratulating people going “I just don’t get how anyone could like this book.” I absolutely get how people could like it! Romantasy is often a lot of low-to-mid quality writing, rigidly formulaic genre conventions, and cast of largely recognizable stock characters. Oh, excuse me, did I say Romantasy? I meant LitRPG. Oh, excuse me, did I say LitRPG? I meant Wuxia webnovels. Oh, excuse me, did I say Wuxia webnovels? I meant -
Romantasy, as with LitRPG or approximately eight billion other subgenres with similarly dedicated fanbases and low barriers to self-publishing, is the way it is because that’s how people like it! Predictability can be comforting. Tropes get reused because people enjoy them. “Poor” writing is forgiven because writing quality isn’t an equally important criterion across genres. Romantasy is, frankly, much more able to churn out works with lasting or crossover appeal than a lot of reddit’s favorite web-based microgenres because, unlike them, it’s old and big enough to have a good buffer against Sturgeon’s Law.
I didn’t happen to enjoy Fourth Wing because I’m not really compelled by the trappings of romantasy. But it was massively popular for a lot of very good reasons, and acting like a Fourth Wing or something by Sarah J. Maas is any worse on some “objective” scale than one of the subreddit’s current books à la mode like Dungeon Crawler Carl or The Shadow of the Gods is just delusion.
Tress of the Emerald Sea, by Brandon Sanderson I read it for: Elemental Magic (HM) 2024 Possibilities: Under the Surface, Bards, Character with a Disability, Prologues and Epilogues.
This was, hands down, my least favorite book I read last year. Not just on the Bingo card; least favorite book period. I read a lot of Brandon Sanderson prior to 2020, but this is only the second thing of his I’ve read since then and it did nothing at all to convince me I needed to reverse that trend. The narratorial voice was grating and obnoxious, the characters were two dimensional cardboard cutouts, the writing was uninspired, and the ending felt insipid and unearned. It read like a children’s book, save for the fact that it was nearly five hundred pages long and required half a dozen tabs open to the dedicated Cosmere wiki in order for all the not-so-subtle nods to other Cosmere works to be anything other than smugly opaque. I’m glad Tress exists, as hundreds of thousands of people clearly love it, but it’s the only book on this list I regret reading.

2024.03.30 23:04 CopperKast [The Soldiers Core] Chapter 15.0 Squibs and Ants

After respawning I was like a kid seeing his dog after a long trip. My shotgun manifested with me and as I had assumed there was no ammo, which is unfortunate. I suppose I could use it as a fancy club for now until I can make some shells or, if I am lucky, buy an attribute that allows me to manifest with some. This particular model was built off a very old Russian design, the TOZ-106 if I remember right. My model, the 12G-BT, or 12 gauge Breaching Tool, was initially developed only for breaching doors as the name would imply. That is to say, It wasn’t meant for combat in the traditional sense. That being the case it was designed as a utility device more than a weapon. Thankfully after the trench warfare kicked off, its barrel was rifled and got a barrel extension that was threaded onto, well, the barrel taking it from eleven inches to eighteen greatly improving the accuracy, and the under-folding stock was brought back as an armory modification. Instead of a sling the whole shotgun slides cleanly into the synthetic leather scabbard on my hip, with the stock folded of course.
The thing is generally seen as archaic by anyone who isn’t using it, being bolt action and only having a 3 +1 capacity but a 12 gauge slug puts holes in soft targets in ways a 6.2mm rifle bullet just can’t. Hmm, I wonder if I can make the shotgun shells caseless the way a 6.2 is. That's an experiment for another time I think as I revert into my ethereal form and enter my mindspace, then back into my avatar, drawing my shotgun I remove the bolt, placing it on the workbench, and grab a piece of brass from the shelf and form it into a cylinder then adjust the size until it slides in and out of the chamber with a machine-milled fit, perfect. I then create the rim for the ejector to grab and place the bolt back into the action to see if I can get it to eject. It takes a fair bit of trial and error but I do eventually get the size as close to perfect as I am able and it finally works as advertised. Now with the hard part out of the way I close the bolt and pull the trigger, that ever so satisfying click rings out and I eject the brass blank, now with a pin mark perfectly in the center. From the other side, I begin to hollow it out but stop and grab a piece of copper from the shelf as well and form fit it to the inside of the barrel, the perfect diameter of a 12 gauge slug. I then cut a portion to about an inch long and taper the front into a rounded point, and carve a shallow bowl into the bottom. Placing the new slug against the brass shell blank I can see I was making the hollow portion of the shell too big so I fill it back in. While holding the slug centered on the blank face I carve a circle around it and then place the slug back onto the workbench.
I hollow out the shell just a hair smaller in diameter compared to the slug so there is a good seal after the round is seated. Once the inside is done I flip the shell over and cut out a hole around the pin mark for a primer slot. taking the small cutout; I hollow it out as well, making the flat part a little less than a millimeter thick, and round the edges off. I then slot the primer back into the shell with the hollow end facing inward. With the shell and slug now complete I place them both on the shelf separately and then take a copy of both seating them together and placing the finished round next to the separate shell and slug. Or at least mostly finished round, I still have to find a good substitute for gunpowder or actually make gunpowder. Sitting at seventy mana I decide to manifest a few Motes of Ignis, with Ignis-II the price for making them has dropped down to ten mana per mote instead of thirty.
Now thirty mana down and three motes sitting on the worktable I manifest some charcoal, and form a mortar and pestle out of smooth agate I grind the charcoal into a very fine powder and empty it onto the workbench then consume all the fine particulate stuck to my processing tools leaving the mortar and pestle clean. Next, I take a single Mote of Ignis and extremely carefully, and slowly, attempt to grind it into a powder. with every turn of the pestle, the mote sends out a small spark but the whole mass does not ignite thankfully, and after about twenty slow minutes of grinding all three of my motes I dump it into a pile next to my charcoal and clean the tools the same way. Looking at my shelf both the charcoal and Ignis powder have appeared since I consumed them and they both are contained in small antwing vials I had made while waiting for the respawn timer to pass. I take the Ignis and charcoal powder and gently mix them with a stick until they are the color of a dark rusty red and I use Discern on the pile
Alchemical Fuel Mixture, Common, Average Quality.
This is a common fuel used in alchemical laboratories and magical forges, the length of burn and energy produced is defined by the amount of either part of the mixture being increased or reduced in comparison to the other. Charcoal or coal powder provides length, Powder of Ignis provides energy. This mixture can be ignited using friction, impact, or an external source of energy.
I then turn to the ignis powder on my shelf and use discern on it as well
Powder of Ignis, Rare, High Quality.
This is the powdered form of a Mote of Ignis, it is extremely volatile and is used as a base ingredient in most alchemical fuel mixtures. Each grain of powdered ignis can be used as a “seed” to grow many more Motes of Ignis, albeit the lab grown crystals will be of one quality level lower than the original. As long as the “root” of the crystals is not removed the crystals can continue to be grown and harvested providing they receive mana to grow. These synthetic crystals are the main source of Ignis crystals in most marketplaces around the globe. This powder can be ignited using friction and impact.
I think I just found what I will be using for my primer so I take the vial of Powder of Ignis and the empty shotgun shell then pop the primer back out. The hard part will be getting it to stick to the inside, I pour enough to fill the primer halfway way then using an iron dowel the same diameter as the inside of the primer I compress the powder to make it uniform. Thankfully it decided not to explode but now I have to figure out how to keep it in place long enough to let me strike it. Paper would be very useful right now, hmm, paper. I take a piece of my yew wood and plane off a piece wafer thin then take the sheet of hair thickness wood and press it over the primer, its sharp edges acting like a cookie cutter it slices a circle perfectly the size of the inside of the primer. I get rid of the rest and then fuse the edges into the primer’s wall after also pressing it flush to the surface of the packed primer powder. To test it I take the little thing between my fingers and turn it over, nothing moves or dumps out. Satisfied, I pop the primer back into the empty shell and replace the previous one with the empty primer then grab a copy and slot it into the chamber of my shotgun, closing the bolt. I face it away from my work area into the empty void behind me and pull the trigger; To my great elation, there is a loud pop and a lazy trail of gray smoke rising from my barrel. I rack the bolt to eject my test shell to find the primer indented dead center and the brass is warm to the touch even though it was such a small amount of powder for the primer. I can’t help but grin as I put my gun back in its scabbard and throw away the spent shell.
Turning back to my workbench I take the vial of Ignis powder and dump more onto the alchemical fuel pile. The stream never seems to stop as the vial refills itself at the same pace as I pour it out and I can feel it eating my mana ravenously. Checking, I'm down to 18 of 100 as I stop pouring. I then carefully mix them together making a brighter red rust colored pile of dust. If the energy and how quickly it burns is in relation to the ratios of charcoal and powder of Ignis, then I need more Ignis and less charcoal. I consume the pile and it shows up in another vial next to the other two. Taking it I fill the primed shotgun shell halfway and then press a slug into it, making a completed shotgun round. Not wanting to accidentally kill myself I put my gun in the vice and close it tight onto the frame, then loop a string around the trigger and lead it about fifty feet away. Coming back to the workbench I load the finished shell with the safety on and close the bolt. About five feet in front of the muzzle I form a rock pillar with an oak board and proceed to remove the safety and follow the string to its end, forming a rock wall in front of me and then pull the string. There is a bang and I can smell the smoke as I walk back to the test. It's not like the smell of gunpowder unfortunately but I’m sure I'll grow to love it just the same. I look at my shotgun and it looks fine so I rack the bolt ejecting the shell and It clatters against the ground with a satisfying ping. Then I look at the target but there is no hole, not even powder burn from being that close to the barrel. I pick it up and remove the bolt again, then peer through what should have been an empty barrel, instead there was no light to be seen through it.
“It fucking squibbed.” I say aloud to nobody but myself, and I begin making an iron ram-rod to remove the stuck bullet but then an idea hits me, I turn back into my ethereal form and my shotgun disappears with me, dropping the copper slug to the ground with a small thud. I’m down to eight mana so I won't be able to add more ignis powder to the mix I already have, in the end I resign myself to waiting for it to recharge. It is going to take the rest of the afternoon and the whole night in my ethereal form again. I can resume my gunsmithing in the morning I suppose.
The hours tick by, one by one, and I have become sick of chess for the time being so I head out into the dungeon. The ants mining have already passed my natural barrier as they bee-line for the mountain and I can feel my borders spreading with every clump of rock they pull from the walls, normally they would pile the refuse outside into a steep mound that grows taller as the colony gets deeper but I have been absorbing it passively as it hits the floor, vastly speeding up their digging since they don't have to carry it out and it is acting as a small but steady income of mana since I am not the one excavating the material. I head over to the fungal garden and check on their progress as well. About twenty ants are working in here now and the column is finished, they are making more bridges between the skeletons of what will be large hanging baskets filled with mulch and fungi, some of the workers have also begun making more substrate and filling the large baskets before they have been completely woven. I leave the room and head over to my sanctum and become my avatar, grabbing the flashlight from my tool rack. I remove its hood and walk to my new favorite cooking area since I was rather hungry and the excitement of getting my shotgun back has worn off.
I light the pit with a metal rod that I had infused with a mote of Ignis. It has a nice leather bound wooden handle so I don't burn myself and Discern says it's a simple infused iron club, but for me, it's a fire starter. When I force mana into it it heats up and glows red hot so I just stick the hot end into a pile of tinder and it lights. I stack my tinder and light it with my fire stick but there are no ashes in this pit so I have to burn some wood down to coals for a couple hours to make a nice bed of ash to reflect the heat for me, and by the time it's ready I feel like its close to 10-ish P.M. I open the meat chest and select a nice slab of venison, there should be more than enough for the test to still work regarding if food spoils. I also put the kettle on to begin boiling and the little wire mesh ball inside I fill with Mana Root tea, the only other drink I have that isn’t water, and wait for it to boil as I unwrap my venison and put it on the grill. The room is flooded with the sound of sizzling and the very fragrant smell of cooking meat as I prepare a plate and some cutlery for myself, and Cardinal walks into the room. I wasn’t paying attention and she startles me by tapping on the side of the knee with her mandibles. I think she enjoys scaring me because she never announces her presence like Onyx and purposely walks quietly unlike the workers. She has also begun to enjoy the smell of my cooking I think, usually coming to just chill in my sanctum with me whenever I prepare food for myself, as long as she isn’t busy.
She never asks for any but I usually cut off a quarter or so for her to eat and she never turns it down. We stand there and talk for a bit until the kettle begins to steam over. I couldn’t figure out how to get it to whistle but I'm fine with just watching it to make sure it doesn’t burn. I pour myself a mug and flip my deer steak one more time before deciding it was done and I plate it before cutting Cardinal her piece as Onyx comes in through the tunnel, We all chat as I eat, it almost reminds me of having a family, or maybe living alone with a pair of very talkative dogs. I'm about halfway through my meal when I feel a sharp sensation in the base of my skull, not painful, just very uncomfortable. and I can tell Cardinal and Onyx could feel it too. Shortly after I feel a bunch of small feet enter my domain, a lot of them, but too small to be human or human analogous. I have my two royals head back to the nursery area as we all feel another one of those sharp feelings in our heads, but this time I could feel the body of one of my ants slump to the ground dead. We were under attack.
I evaporate into my floating consciousness and head outside to get a good look, and to my surprise there is a group of twelve ants standing on two legs over my dead ant, they all have spears and shields or small bows with a quiver and arrows and frankly, they look almost exactly how I imagined bipedal ants would, I consume my ant as one of them begins dragging it off into the forest, causing it to topple over as all its force was sent forwards with nothing dragging behind him, getting some surprised chitters from all of them. Another one of my ants that was hiding in the tree above drops on the downed ant, wrenching its head off and I tell it to run so it scampers off into the forest, barely being missed by a few arrows. The rest of the ants watch in what I would assume was horror as their companion's corpse and gear turns to dust and vanishes in front of them. I use discern on one of them while they reform into a tight circle with shields outside and bows in the middle.
Female Evolved Dire Ant scout, uncommon. (sterile)
This is a Dire Ant who belongs to a colony or hive that has undergone its metamorphosis into a higher form of being from just a simple animal. Driven by emotion and intelligence rather than just base instincts, it can formulate language, communities, and if need be, tactics to give it an edge over its surroundings. This specific ant is a scout, often sent outside its colonies' borders to gather information and to find young colonies to subjugate before heading back to distribute its gathered intel. If a nascent colony is found it will lead a raiding party to where it was discovered and assist in its subjugation.
This subspecies is less venomous than its relatives but it has a much higher bite force than most other ants.
“Well, shit.” I think in my outer thoughts as I watch them creep closer to the dungeon's entrance as if they could sense where it is. Well, they are probably following the pheromone trails of my ants, so in a way I guess they can sense where it is. I enter my crafting space as I recheck my mana, 48 of 100, good enough. I craft five more shells as fast as I can after adding more Powder of Ignis to my propellant mix dropping my mana by twenty six points. Hoping it's enough, I load a magazine and swap it for the one in my shotgun, putting the other two in the spare ammo loops in my carrier. A little mist pops up and it says "added to gear" as I leave the mindspace. I reform my avatar and I can feel the ants slowly making their way down the bowl still huddled in their shield circle.
I begin creating a long wooden shaft, making sure it is longer than the spears of the invading ants, and add a square edged iron tip with a sharpened point to it then manifest Garmm’s shield, albeit I removed the paint and it has fresh boards of oak instead of yew. I place my wrist through the leather lanyard on my side of the shield, grabbing its handle, and take the new spear as I head down the tunnel out of my sanctum and contact my whole colony to let them know what's happening, after notifying them there is an immediate note of agitation in the air I can feel and make my way towards the hallway.
I can sense the invaders outside in my courtyard both peering down the ant tunnel and my stairwell to decide which to go down as both have the ant's pheromone trails, they opt for the stairwell as I get into position in the storage room with a clear line of sight to the door. I lean my spear up against the wall and pull out my shotgun to check my gear one last time, the two spare shells are not present on my ammo carrier, I check my magazine and I only have one shell. That's a problem. Is there a hard limit to the amount of ammunition I can carry? Cursing and shaking my head at the wasted mana and missing shells, I rack the bolt slow and quiet then crouch so the shield covers most of my body. As an afterthought carve a notch into the top right corner of the shield where I brace my gun, Just in time to watch the first ant with a second close behind it reaching through the door to try and fiddle with my deadbolt.

🔗Fiberglass Reinforced Polymer AK-47 Grip with Multi-Textured Rubber Overmold and Storage Compartment

https://preview.redd.it/43a4suo071rc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=351525318bb178ec79e1b4310a8ded4efe6d315f
I've been using the FAB Def Pstl Grp AK47 Rubberized Black grip for a while now and it's been an absolute game-changer in my experience with the AK-47. The grip's black finish has a sleek and minimalist look, fitting perfectly with the overall aesthetic of the weapon. The fiberglass reinforced polymer composite, combined with the multi-textured rubber overmold, provides a comfortable and secure grip even in the harshest of environments.
One of the standout features for me was the inclusion of finger grooves and a backstrap, which really enhance the overall feel and handling of the weapon. The storage compartment is also a great addition, providing a convenient place to keep essential items without compromising the grip's functionality. However, it's worth mentioning that there were a few downsides that I encountered with the product.
On the negative side, I found that a high beaver tail on the grip could interfere with mounting certain accessories like a single-point sling. This issue required trimming, which may not be ideal for everyone. I also noticed that the grip does not come with its own screw to attach it to the weapon, which could catch potential buyers off-guard.
In conclusion, the FAB Def Pstl Grp AK47 Rubberized Black grip has been a fantastic addition to my AK-47, bringing both style and functionality to the table. Despite a few minor drawbacks, the pros of this grip far outweigh the cons. If you're in the market for a new grip for your AK-47, you certainly can't go wrong with the FAB Def Pstl Grp AK47 Rubberized Black.

🔗Fab Def Gradus Grip - Reinforced Polymer Core with Textured Rubber Overmold for Enhanced Comfort and Precision Shooting

https://preview.redd.it/cf1tuj1171rc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=d5a27110adb3ec859943e99a6355c7288ed2848a
The Gradus pistol grip from FAB Defense has been a staple in my daily carry-on gun. I've found that its reinforced polymer core with a textured rubber overmold provides a comfortable yet secure grip. The 15-degree reduced grip angle is perfect for those precision shots, especially during CQB scenarios.
I also appreciate the slim ergonomic design and curved back strap, which makes for a more enjoyable and comfortable grip. The AR-style beaver tail adds a touch of ruggedness and makes it easy to attach to any compatible firearm. Plus, it comes in a beautiful Flat Dark Earth color, which adds a touch of style without being overbearing.
While it's not the cheapest grip on the market, I'm willing to pay a bit extra for the quality that FAB Defense provides. However, my only complaint is that it doesn't come with a mounting screw, which might be a hassle for some users. All in all, it's a top-notch grip that's worth considering for your next firearm purchase.

🔗Springfield Hellcat Jericho 941 Grip Upgrade

https://preview.redd.it/fzhg27j171rc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3c20f9b16a76c6e758faf926f9429a4616195424
Recently, I was looking to enhance the grip on my trusty Springfield Hellcat pistol, so I decided to try out the Hogue HandALL Beavertail Grip Sleeve. This particular grip is specifically designed for the Springfield Hellcat, and it's made from a combination of elastomer rubber and durable polymer. The beaver tail design not only adds an extra layer of comfort but also gives it a unique aesthetic touch that makes it stand out from other grips on the market.
One of the things I liked most about this grip was its ergonomic shape. It fitted snugly onto my Hellcat's handle, and I found it to be very comfortable, even after extended periods of shooting. The Cobblestone grip pattern added a nice tactile feel, providing stability that has come in handy in a few tense situations.
Another thing that stood out to me was the versatility. Although it's designed for the Springfield Hellcat, I found it to be quite compatible with other semi-automatic pistols as well. All I needed to do was stretch it out slightly before sliding it onto the grip, and it worked just fine.
That being said, installing the grip wasn't without its challenges. While the instructions stated to warm the grip with hot water, I found it to be a bit more difficult than that. In the end, I had to use a hair dryer to soften it up a bit, making it more pliable and easier to slide onto the grip. While it might take a tad bit of experimentation, once you get it on, it remains secure without any fear of it coming off.
Even after multiple range visits and countless rounds of ammo fired, the grip has remained perfectly intact and hasn't shown any signs of wear and tear. It's a small detail that might go unnoticed, but it certainly makes a difference in the long run.
However, there is one downside to this grip that I would be remiss not to point out. If you have larger hands or a slightly more defined grip than others, it might be a bit too tight when trying to install it. It's not a deal breaker, but it's certainly worth mentioning.
In summary, the Hogue HandALL Beavertail Grip Sleeve is an excellent addition to the Springfield Hellcat, providing a comfortable and secure grip that not only looks good but functions well too. Despite the initial install requiring a bit more effort, the grip itself is well worth the price of admission, making it a solid purchase for anyone looking to enhance their pistol's grip.

🔗Durable Grips for Jericho 941 Firearms with Laser Accessory

I've been using the Hogue Le Grip Govt Rubber OD Green for a few weeks now, and I must say, it's been a game-changer for my daily carry. The laser sight is incredibly easy to adjust on target, and there are several options for illuminating the target, making it perfect for different lighting situations. One of the standout features is the proportioned finger grooves, which hug the contours of my gun and provide a secure hand grip. This grip also has a non-slip surface, which is essential for someone like me who carries a lot.
The grips are ambidextrous, which means I can use them as a left-handed or right-handed shooter, making them versatile for when I'm training with different people. The installation process was straightforward, and no lubrication was required. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase, and I would definitely recommend the Hogue Le Grip Govt Rubber OD Green to anyone looking for a reliable, durable, and comfortable grip with a laser sight.

🔗SIG P365-XL Grips for Ultimate Gun Hold

https://preview.redd.it/nzb1qat271rc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b5daba9d1885153640b31a3dcc248a2f7f4196cd
I recently tried the Talon Evo Grp for Sig P365-xl Rbr, and I must say, they've made a game-changer for the Sig P365. With any small gun, grip can be an issue, but these little guys have made it a breeze.
The adhesive material is thin yet incredibly efficient. It's a simple yet satisfying process-no mess, just a secure grip.
The rubber texture is aggressive yet comfortable, offering a better experience while handling the gun. And guess what? . It's made right here in the USA.
Talon grips just make a difference that you didn't realize was needed, until you've used them.

🔗Synthetic Grips for Ruger 22 45: Lightweight and Cobblestone Textured

https://preview.redd.it/qdj4zj0371rc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=337da58b56c94ee81a1252dc8f9c359f34838584
Recently, I had the opportunity to try out the Hogue Grp Ak47-ak74 OD grip, and I must say, it exceeded my expectations. From the moment I held it, the durability of the synthetic rubber with the Cobblestone texture was evident.
What really stood out to me was the lightweight synthetic skeleton, which made it incredibly comfortable to use. The orthopedic hand shape also played a significant role in providing a secure and ergonomic grip, allowing me to handle the AK47 with ease.
However, there were a few drawbacks. The finger grooves might not be suitable for everyone, as they might not fit perfectly for individuals with smaller hands. Additionally, the installation process could be a bit tricky, as it required some tweaking to fit the grip onto the weapon properly.
Overall, the Hogue Grp Ak47-ak74 OD proved to be a reliable and comfortable grip for my AK47, and I would highly recommend it to anyone seeking a sturdy and ergonomic option for their firearm.

🔗Custom Grip for Glock 48/43X Snd

https://preview.redd.it/4lt511t371rc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=690c55fee6cb7f8b69222a7be79e6dc494ad8553
The Talon low profile grip for Glock 48/43X models is a custom-designed solution that provides an impressive fit and finish, all while adding minimal bulk and size. This grip uses an adhesive that remains in place once properly installed and can be easily removed with minimal residue.
I've spent several weeks using this grip, and I must say, I'm quite impressed by the easy installation process. In just a few minutes, I had it securely attached to my Glock, thanks to the heat gun or hairdryer method mentioned in the instructions. It is incredibly convenient when you want to apply it to your firearm without any hassle.
A key feature that stands out is the rubber texture of the grip, which offers a positive grip on the firearm. This is particularly useful for concealed carry, as it is less likely to irritate skin or snag clothes. It is also perfect for users with softer hands, providing added comfort during long shooting sessions.
The grip has an excellent coverage on the backstrap, thumb rest, and trigger guard, which adds to the overall comfort and security while holding the firearm. One of the unique aspects of this grip is that it is made in the USA, which adds to its credibility and quality.
Overall, I would highly recommend the Talon low profile grip for Glock 48/43X models to anyone looking for an OEM quality fit and finish, with minimal bulk and size. While it's not a perfect solution, the pros outweigh the cons, making it a worthwhile addition to your firearm accessories collection.

🔗Talon Grips for Glock 43 - 100g, Canik C100 Grips

https://preview.redd.it/dfpgtp5471rc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0d51fe781ff6680b872262b2672abb8a2577bced
In my recent search for a reliable and comfortable grip for my Glock 43, I stumbled upon Talon Grips' 100g variant. At first, I was a bit skeptical about how a simple grip could make a significant difference in handling compared to the factory grip. However, I was pleasantly surprised when I installed it.
What stood out to me was the grip's full coverage on the side panels, providing a secure and comfortable grip even during long shooting sessions. The texture, often compared to sandpaper or skateboard tape, allowed for a positive grip on the firearm, something I hadn't experienced before.
Despite the grips being thin and minimalistic, they added no bulk to my gun, making it feel more comfortable in my holster. The installation process was a breeze, and the adhesive held strong without leaving behind any residue.
One minor downside I noticed was the cutouts for the Glock emblem on the left side of the handle. While it added a personalized touch, it also slightly compromised the full coverage of the grip. Nevertheless, this didn't impact the overall performance or comfort.
Overall, the Talon Grip for Glock 43 Snd has exceeded my expectations and has become an essential accessory for my firearm. Its ability to provide a solid grip without adding bulk and its ease of installation make it a reliable and worthwhile investment for any Glock owner.

🔗Premium Cocobolo Wood 1911 Govt. Grip

https://preview.redd.it/o9rta7p471rc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fe93c69d5c0945f3393b637faff9b24d4fa411dc
You know that feeling of getting your hands on a perfectly crafted piece, where every detail is meticulously done? Well, that's exactly what using these Ed Brown Grips feels like. They may look like just another set of handgun grips, but take one in your hand and it's game over.
What really stood out for me was the Cocobolo wood - not just because it boasts a striking appearance, but because it's the densest and strongest of all the rosewoods. It's the perfect choice for high-quality grips like these.
However, there's a tiny downside - they're not cut for an ambi safety. But hey, perfection isn't perfect, right?
These grips have a certain charm about them that makes holding your Taurus revolver feel like a luxury experience. And when you're working with a tool as important as a firearm, feel really matters. So, while they might seem like just another part to some, to me, they're the difference between a good day and a fantastic one.

🔗1911 Laser Grips Slate Gray with Finger Grooves

https://preview.redd.it/sqtrma3571rc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c822c9546a57ef88d34b0ce49076b897619167ee
During my time in the shooting range, I've had the opportunity to put my hands on several different gun grips. Some were uncomfortable, some slippery, and others seemed to disappear as I struggled to maintain a solid grip. That was until I tried the Hogue Rubber Officer's - a slate grey wonder to behold.
Slipping this beauty onto my 1911 Officer 43002, I instantly felt the cobblestone texture that filled my hands with a renewed sense of confidence. The rubber compound, sturdy and durable, left me feeling protected and secure from any potential recoil. The slate grey color was a cool and calming contrast to the fire and smoke that surrounded me.
However, the story doesn't end with all praise. The finger grooves, despite being a nice touch, felt slightly awkward and intrusive. I found myself wishing for a smooth, continuous surface that wouldn't impede my grip. Additionally, while the rubber material made for a solid base, it was also a bit too friction-driven. In extremely humid conditions, I experienced a slight difficulty sliding the grip back into its natural position. But after using it for a few weeks, I felt more comfortable and found those quirks to be minimal.
All in all, the Hogue Rubber Officer's is a worthy companion to my trusty firearm. The balance of practical design and aesthetic appeal makes it a valuable asset in any firearms enthusiast's arsenal. Though it's not a perfect product, it's certainly a step in the right direction.

🔗Hogue Over-Molded Ruger MK IV 22/45 Grips - Slate Gray

https://preview.redd.it/uh6y7uj571rc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0b357f507646d8034ca7a0421e67dda47383dcdb
Recently, I had the opportunity to try out the Hogue Handall grip for my Ruger 22/45 SLT Gry.
It was surprisingly comfortable to hold, thanks to the ergonomic design and the over-molded rubber grip. The Cobblestone pattern added a nice touch, providing a good grip even in sweaty hands.
Installation was hassle-free, and the grip seemed to fit my firearm perfectly. The finger grooves did give me better control while firing. However, after a few days of use, I noticed a slight wear on the rubber material, but it's not a deal-breaker.
Overall, the grip adds a professional touch to my Ruger, making it a reliable and comfortable choice.

🔗Versatile Ruger SR22 Grip for Increased Mobility and Rigidity

https://preview.redd.it/jtdz82v571rc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=6da7ea5016c688eb2be7b01868228bb68bb66168
I recently got my hands on the BCM Gunfighter Vertical Grip Short FDE. First impressions? It's a solid, well-built piece. The low-profile length is perfect for maneuverability, and I love how it reduces the chances of unnecessary snagging.
The grip angle enhances my rigidity, while the natural wrist angle feels comfortable. And talking about comfort, the aggressive texture on this one is both a pro and a con. It provides a firm hold, but it can also be a bit rough on the hands at times.
Storage volume and modularity are definite pluses here. Not only does it offer storage space, but it also accommodates future improvements. Speaking of which, the included fasteners are a breeze to set up - simple to install and remove thanks to the spring-loaded clamps.
The only drawback for me is the color. It's lighter than I expected, so if you're looking for a perfect match with your existing FDE furniture, you might not find it here. But overall, I'm satisfied with this purchase. It's rugged, functional, and meets our needs without any hiccups.

🔗Hi Point 45 Grips: Small & Large Replacement Transmitter Grips for Optimal Comfort and Grip

https://preview.redd.it/0naxdlh671rc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=00a750ca6d356f5ecd244c165657dbbc9fa156af
The small and large TF 45 grips from Hi Point 45 Grips have become an essential part of my daily life. These replacement grips for the TF-45 transmitter come in two options – a standard with a smooth texture and a large version with a studded pattern for better grip for those with large hands.
I have used them extensively and the quality is simply fantastic. Not only does it enhance the look of my transmitter, but it also ensures better control and comfort. The smooth texture of the small grip, combined with the studded design of the large grip, creates a great balance between style, comfort, and practicality.
One of the aspects I love most about these grips is their durability. Even after multiple uses, they have not scratched or worn out. The high-grade materials used in production ensure satisfaction and longevity.
However, it's always a bit of a hassle for those who want to switch between the small and large grips frequently. The replacement process can be a bit time-consuming, but it's nothing a little patience can't handle.
Overall, the Hi Point 45 Grips are a great choice for those looking for an excellent grip and a stylish upgrade for their transmitter. While they may have a slight drawback in terms of frequent replacement, their excellent quality, durability, and customizable options more than make up for it.

🔗Taurus AR Pattern Revolver Grip

https://preview.redd.it/ggpi77r671rc1.jpg?width=720&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=37551480a7d5e9d17f0b1d1cd8bd024b35da9c04
I recently got my hands on the CQG-L grip from Reptilia, and I must say, it's been a game-changer for my compact AR rifles and pistols. The matte finish gives it a sleek and professional look, while also being easy to maintain and hold on to. One of the features I appreciate the most is its ergonomic design, which makes it perfect for handling without any discomfort, even when using my rifles for extended periods.
However, there is one aspect I noticed could be improved - the additional 0.5" of length might be a bit too long for some users, especially those with smaller hands. It doesn't affect the overall grip performance, but it's worth considering when deciding if this grip is the right fit for you.

2024.03.23 00:46 DOSO-DRAWS So, this is my plan to revolutionize videogame cutout animation. Hear me out:

Hello everyone!
Your regular aspiring upcomer middle age solo webdeb here,
with a twist:
Over the past 5 years, I've been developing a method that will take videogame cutout animation to the next level. It consists of three key features:
A) Each character features not one, but 8 skeletons. (One for each view angle - F, F34, F45, Fs, B, B34, B45, Bs).
B) I have put together a system to randomize supporting characters that allows me to easily produce 10,000 of them with a consistent look to the main characters.
I do this using a variation of the NFT approach where I much like with the main character, I build each secondary's character FACE from about 15-20 parts (eyebrow, eyelidU, eyelidD, Iris, Schlera, Nose, LipU, LipD, TeethU, TeethD, etc.)
So if you can picture it, it all nests together in like 100 x 800 parts for each character, all things considered.
That over all the main characters, plus the up to 10,000 proceduraly generated supported characters drawn in my personal style - each with their own 100x800 parts.
Thtat's a lot of parts. Bit unwiedly, right? Except...
C) With the help of my trusted Windows Copilot, I put together a script that is able to actually take all those cazillion PNG featuring all those parts for all those characters that we're going to use to revolutionize videogame cutot animation, and import them into Godot. I just hit Win + C and typed:
"godot how to add all PNG textures within each one of various folders into a dictionary, then randomly select one texture from each group, then use that texture to create a new Polygon2D node with the group name from which the texture came, then create a new Bone2D node with the same name, then add it to the given skeleton2D, then create a DNA string that identifies the achieved randomization do it can be replicated subsequently using that value"
And lo and behold, we got a script.
So now I just have to need to get out and draw all the character sheets - which I intend to do manually, of course.
I have already done just that for an animation project I'm working for a client, and it currently takes me 1 day to put together 1 character (With all the dozens parts for head, body and hand). It takes me 2 weeks or so to put together a set of of all the needed parts for 10,000 or so supporting characters.
I'm not sure I can show those pictures thought, so I'll probably just whip out some sketches for this new thing I'm going to do.
So, imagine the possibilties.
Dunno about you, but I'm going to use this approach to put together a kickass game.
I'm thinking something in the lines of Streets of Rage or Final Fight, except with a roster of 10,000 different bad guys tear through. Featuring ighly advanced cutout animation for all characters in the game, including 8 viewpoints reprented by a set of 8 skeletons per characters.
Is anyone out there feeling this?
So, to keep the pitch short.
I'm throwing this out there to see if people might take interest to see a devlog showcasing the development of such a project, and you know - eventually banding together into a Kickstarter of sorts?
Let me know if anyone out there finds the concept interesting. Feel free to ask questions or throw around ideas or criticism - I'm all ears.
Your neighbourly friendly gamedev,
DOSO

2024.03.11 00:22 always_misunderstood do Corbin Skeleton keys have a master?

hello,
the doors in my old house use Corbin Skeleton keys. I have two keys, a Corbin P7 and P9. they work in a couple of the doors. I would like to have a key for every door. I could buy a whole set of P series keys and figure out which goes with which, but before I do that I am curious if there exists a master for those locks?
it seems like the keys have a notch to prevent the wrong key from being inserted, then a high medium, and low cutout in the other direction. it seems like it might be possible to just make a master by having all of the low, mid, high parts cut completely out simultaneously.
if that isn't possible, what is the best way to get a set of new keys?
