Orientation checklists for nursing students

I'm 21(f), college students , studying to be a nurse. Apart from school, I also have rotations in the hospital and I work after that. Well this semester was a rollercoaster of depression but I made it.I barely have time to interact because I'm either sleeping or in school or at work. About 2 weeks ago I got a kitten and having him really helped me. The morning of my first exam which was last week he banged on my door furious I had a cat and just quarelled with me and walked off before I could even explain myself. I understand now that I'm wrong for not telling him I got a kitten.I did apologize and explain what I was going through later that week because I had exams back to back and no time in-between but he refused to listen and he was extremely angry about it. Because it was exam week I couldn't work so I didn't have any money to carry him by a home where he would be cared for, and I was waiting till my next pay to take him. In that time my stepmother and father treated me like a black sheep,I would walk in and say good afternoon, morning etc no response whatsoever. I slept on the floor outside because I was locked out a night. Even with keys they would put a key on the inside of the door so I can't get in. The semester was closing and I had documents to sign in school a few days ago...well my boss called in the morning for an emergency meeting I rushed out the house and took the wrong key.(At this time of day I'm the only one home). So I saw no problem with it......there was a problem. My stepmother was home and she didn't like that I took the wrong key so I guess she told my dad. Well he told me to get out as soon as possible because of it. All of this happened in the span of 2 weeks. And well I'm moving on Saturday. I will no longer be speaking to them.

Hello! I've never posted here but have essentially been orienting my life toward semi-early retirement since I began making enough money to save aggressively. I'm not as hardcore as some of you—my basic approach is that I want to continue spending and taking advantage of the amenities of a HCOL city I love in my 20s/30s while saving aggressively—but I'd love advice or input on ways to further optimize what I'm doing, given that outlook.
I'm currently 29, made $138.6k (AGI) last year, and will likely be making $200k+ within the next 2-3 years. I live with my long-term partner, who makes about half of what I do, and we split expenses proportionally, which includes our $2k/month rent.
Here's what I'm doing right now:

• 7% of my post-tax income goes into a Roth 401k through my employer. This maxes out their match (100% first 3%, 50% next 3%) plus a little more. I plan to increase this to 10% in the short term and continue increasing it over time as incomes scales, until I'm at or near the yearly max. Current total: ~$35k.
• I put $30-35k per year into an aggressive M1 brokerage portfolio. $250/week plus whatever excess I can dump in after a windfall (bonus, tax return, etc.) or when I have more than I need in checking. Current total: ~$135k.
• I just recently opened a Roth IRA that I will make the max contribution of $7k to this year. Similarly aggressive portfolio via M1. I plan to max this out every year from now on. Current total: ~$1.5k.
• I have about $3.5k of student debt remaining from an initial total of roughly $20k. I have never paid a cent of interest on my credit cards and carry no other debt. We have no short-term plans to buy a car or house, or have children.

Do any of you here who have thought about this stuff more than me have good advice about things I'm missing? Things I should move around or reallocate? Adjustments to investing strategy? Thanks for your help!

I'm an incoming graduate student to Switzerland and I'm in the process of submitting an application for a type D student visa. I emailed the local embassy asking for information regarding what type of bank statements would be acceptable for the procedure but they only replied to me with an unspecific generic checklist of documents.
According to the information provided by the school, the Canton of Zürich demands the proof of financial means to be produced by a bank that has a branch in Switzerland and to show the availability of 21k CHF. In addition, the total amount must be displayed in Swiss franks, euros or US dollars.
Having said this, the document the embassy shared with states that I must provide bank statements from the last three months that display available funds totalling 30k CHF. The problem with this is that my local banks have told me that I would need to open a new account denominated in US dollars as they're unable to translate my current savings to foreign currency. As such, I would not be able to present more than one bank statement by the time I deliver the documents at the embassy.
Morever, the gap in available funds (~10k CHF) that exists between what the embassy requires and what the school said is too large for me to accrue in a month. I know it probably isn´t much by Swiss standards but in my country that's a serious amount of money.
I'm not sure what to do. I requested more specific info but I'm starting to fear they'll be inflexible. Given the moment of the year, it would be time for me to start uprooting my life here and proceed with the move to Zürich. However, I'm afraid I'll be met with a visa denial after having made some drastic life changes (sell of assets, quit job, cancelling of lease agreement of my current home) and after having spent a lot of money on flights and document translations.
How do you think I should proceed? Do you think I'll be safe if I present nothing but a single bank statement covering the 21k CHF that I was originally informed I must have?

I am 28 F. I have 3 sisters, 29 F, 30 F, and 25 F. My parents (63 M and 61 F) have been divorced for 12 years. My mom was a stay at home mom for 20 years, and my dad has a Ph.D in nuclear engineering and makes a good living. My mom has had to find her way back into work after being out for so long, and now has a work from home job in customer service making just enough to pay her bills each month. When my parents got divorced, I was the only 1 who chose to live with our mom, while my sisters stayed with our dad because they didn't want to leave the original house which he got. My parents relationship with each other has improved over the years to where they now spend holidays together so they can both be with their kids (neither of them are dating), but in the beginning, probably up until I had my son (the only grandchild), they really didn't like each other. I've always been very close to my mom and not so much my dad, and part of that is because I believe he treats me very different from how he treats my sisters. My mom says this is because I chose to live with her and not him.
My 29 year old sister has gotten herself a Ph.D in economics and is teaching at a university. She is not married, no kids, and lives alone. My 30 year old sister has a bachelors in psychology and attended 2 different grad programs but didn't finish either, and is planning on going back to grad school this year. She is working full time and is married (to a woman) who also works full time. Together, they make around 100 thousand/year. My 25 year old sister went to some community college at my dads urging, for which he paid the tuition. She did not continue. She decided to get her real estate license (my dad funded the course and all costs). She lives with her boyfriend, not married, no kids. I went to the same community college my younger sister went to and studied a university transfer track to a bachelors degree in psychology. After transferring, I changed my major to nursing. I graduated nursing school last may and am now a nurse. When I entered community college, I was 19 living with my mom, no job, full time student. My dad made me take out student loans. My mom would have paid but she couldn't afford it. My older sisters also took out loans, but they went to university which was much more expensive. When I met my husband, I was still on the track to my degree in psychology. I breaked from school when we discovered I was pregnant in 2019. Between 2019 and 2022, I had my son, got married, and started school again but now for nursing. My husband and I started paying off my student loans when we got married in 2019 and I had $12,000 in loans which we were able to pay down to $4,000 by the time covid came and the loans paused.
When I decided to go to nursing school, I chose to go to a private school because they had night class options which would allow me to be home with my son until my husband got home. The tuition cost my husband and I $27,000. $7,000 we paid out of pocket and $20,000 in more loans. I graduated last year with a total of $24,000 in student loans. My husband is successful and has a doctorate in chemical engineering. He works for a university health system as a scientist and makes a salary of $140,000. We also own a home, have 2 pets, a 4 year old, and I am pregnant again. Between my student loans, credit card payments, car payments, bills, the house, etc. we barely have extra money anymore. I was working, but not since recently due to being pregnant. I do plan to keep working, but my previous job was too physically demanding and this was a pregnancy that had to be achieved with fertility treatments so I'm very anxious about anything going wrong.
I recently discovered that my dad has been paying my older sister's student loans every month in full, and that he pays all 3 of my sisters auto insurance. He paid my insurance until I got married. The day I got married he cut me off. However, my oldest sister is married and he is still paying for her's. I'm dumbfoundedd. I thought my dad was being conservative and old fashioned by not paying for anything for me since I got married, then I discover he's still covering my married sister's loans and insurance.
This man is bleeding money. He has 3 cars (1 of which he just gave my younger sister and is still paying for it), and 2 houses in 2 different states. For Christmas this year he got me 2 sweaters. 2 sweaters. But got my sisters like ten things each. He has a budget he spends on each child for Christmas, and since getting married and having my son, he has taken my individual budget and divided it by 3 so my son and husband can get 1 small thing from him. It's honestly such a starkk difference between my mom, who has created 2 entirely additional budgets for her son in law and grandson, and my in laws, who do the same. Neither my mom nor my in laws make close to as much money as my dad makes.
My dad and I are not estranged. I see him frequently, and was invited to his house for dinner tonight. I want to bring all of this up, but I don't know what to say. My sisters have told me are not going to get involved because they don't want to do anything that would make him stop paying for their stuff. What should I do?

Hello everyone!
I recently re-enrolled to finish my Biochemistry degree at Rowan and I need to select roommates for housing (Fall 2024). I'm 28 years old, having earned my B.A. in biology from Rowan in 2019. I was a frat boy and an absolute garbage can of a student back then, though.
Now, I'm a straight-edge, goal-oriented, complete and total boner. I've even joined the marching band and college band as a trombone player this time around and will be graduating in the Spring of 2025.

I would say my personal statement was pretty strong. I wrote about the stories I heard and encountered while taking care of the elderly and how I've begun making my own stories. Initially, I was comparing my essay to those of people online and I was so worried because mine didn't look like theirs and I didn't start ec dropping and shit like them but honestly I had nothing to worry about. Yale (10/10): My interviewer and I were both Black and were able to connect really well because of that. We talked a lot about the Yale environment and being a person of color on campus. Lasted like 80 mins
Princeton (9/10): One of my shorter interviews but he was sooo chill. He was a busy guy so our interview only lasted 20 mins but I was able to express myself pretty confidently and tell him why I liked Princeton.

Hey everybody,
I am in a long distance relationship with a British man and we decided that we want to live together in the UK in the future. I am really overwhelmed with all the requirements and the paperwork that comes with it. I kinda got a feeling for which visa will suit me the best (thinking of a civil partnership because I don’t want to be a nurse there) but I can’t find detailed information on how I start preparing. It is not going to happen anytime soon but I want to start preparing as early as possible. I would love if someone who moved from the EU to the UK to give me a little bit of a checklist if possible. My biggest questions so far are: How bad is the NHS really? How much is private insurance? Will I be able to find a job in a different field as a foreigner? What do I do with all my bank accounts and insurances in Germany and what kind of insurances are available/obligated in the UK? What about retirement - is it worse than the German retirement system?

Leslie (31F) – Alison’s lifelong friend sine the 2nd grade. These girls are inseparable and do and share everything together. Dance classes when they were young, HS prom and homecoming, Alison was Leslie’s MOH. Sorority sisters in college. More like sisters than friends. Leslie is a PA.
Vikki (31F) – Great friends with Alison and Leslie. Another sorority sister from college. Not as close as the other two, but nobody really is. But she is a constant companion to both Alison and Leslie. Vikki is an accountant for one of the big accounting firms.
Brett (30M) – Leslie’s recent husband after they dated for about 5 years. Decent enough guy but I wouldn’t call him a great friend. More like a very good acquaintance. Brett works for a large plumbing/HVAC company that does sales and installation for primarily large industrial and commercial systems. A bit of a party boy who doesn’t necessarily take his career all that seriously and a bit immature IMO.
Jacob (29M) – Vikki’s LT boyfriend. They have been dating for about 4 years and living together for 1. Again, a nice enough fellow but more similar to Brett in personality than me. Jacob is a landman who contracts out to oil and gas companies. TBH, I not really sure what he does. I just know he travels a lot and makes pretty good money.
Now the background. Alison and I met in college. She was everything I could ever want in a partner. Gorgeous, smart, funny, extrovert, responsible. We didn’t start dating until we both graduated and found we would be working in the same city. We made it official fairly quickly. I purchased a house (in my name only) 4 years into our relationship and moved in together. We had a great relationship. Great communication. Fantastic sex. We started making made good money together and most recently with my salary plus bonus plus her salary we clear $350k per year so we are very comfortable financially. Since it was my house, and I made a lot more money, I paid the mortgage and most of the bills and I had no problem with that. I even paid off her student loans and her car note. She saved most of her money and built up quite a healthy 401K, which I was fine with. Hell, we were going to be married soon, so it was a moot point (or so I thought).
During our relationship, we hung out with Leslie & Brett and Vikki & Jacob quite often. He showed me his phone. While I won’t get into ALL the sordid details suffice it to say his story was confirmed and I was broken to my core. Among the stuff he showed me, there was several pictures of Alison getting spit roasted by Brett and Jacob, pics of her having anal sex while eating Leslie’s pussy and a short video of the three girls having a very enthusiastic lesbian threesome. I said if you don’t know you are a fucking idiot on top of being a whore and a liar. She got silent. She knew I knew. She started sobbing, begging me to let her in, saying let her explain, she just wants to talk, etc. etc. etc. I told her forget it, its not happening and she’s not coming in. Through her sobs, she asked me where was she supposed to go. I told her I left her keys in her car and told her go back and live with her fuckbuddies and I closed the window, blocked her number, turned on some music and sat down and just zoned out. About ten minutes later I saw her car back out of the driveway.
About 45 minutes after she left, I got a call from her older brother James who lives in the same city and is fairly close to Alison. James is a great guy, a good friend and someone who I respect and enjoy being around. He told me Alison showed up on his doorstep crying hysterically and saying she fucked up. James really didn’t get any of the details from Alison, but he let her in and told her should could stay as long as she needed (James is a prince). I told James, yes we broke up. No it wasn’t repairable and that I would tell him the story in detail some other time. When I said our relationship wasn’t repairable he immediately understood that to mean she cheated and said he was sorry. I also told James that there were about a dozen boxes filled with her shit that needed to be moved out of my house. He understood and said he would take care of it. True to his word, James and a friend showed up and took all the boxes. We chatted a bit, he said he didn’t need any details but understood and agreed that cheating is impossible to come back from.
Fast forward about three weeks. I haven’t seen or talked to Alison or any of her friends since the night she left. Who should I get a text from but none other than Leslie. She asked me to meet her to talk. I told her I wasn’t interested in anything she had to say. She begged and pleaded with me, said she just wanted to talk and she wasn’t going to try to change my mind. On the off chance that I could get some of the “why”, I agreed to meet her for coffee.
My conversation with Leslie was eye-opening to say the least. First, she told me how sorry she was and that what happened in Mexico was spontaneous and not planned. She said that the other couples had talked about swinging in the past, but had never done anything. Things just got out of hand and that Alison had implied that I would be OK with her participation. She proceeded to tell me Alison was not doing well. She quit her job because she just couldn’t drag herself out of bed, had lost a ton of weight (she didn’t have much to lose to begin with), isn’t taking care of herself or her hygiene very well and has rarely left the house. I took it all in with some indifference.
I basically told Leslie that those were Alison’s problems, not mine, and Alison would have to deal with it. I told Leslie I don’t necessarily hate Alison, but I just don’t care about her or what happens to her any longer. She may as well be a stranger living in another country at this point. Leslie simply could not comprehend my indifference. She begged me to talk to Alison, to let her explain and give her some closure. I told Leslie I wasn’t interested in any excuses, reasons, justifications, explanations, or anything else. I didn’t owe her closure and wasn’t particularly interested in helping her get over her guilt. But I did have some questions.
I asked if that was the first time Alison cheated on me and she sheepishly said “yes, with a guy.” WTH?! I asked her if she and Alison had had sex before and she lowered her eyes and said yes. Apparently, they have been enjoying each other’s pussies on the regular since high school. My jaw absolutely hit the floor. I was in a stupor. I'm a recent nursing grad who just began my orientation in the ICU at a county hospital, located quite a distance from my primary residence. To manage this, I've rented a room nearby, but I commute back home on weekends to spend time with my wife. I am truly grateful for the chance to work in a Level 1 trauma center; however, the separation and commute are proving to be quite tough.
Additionally, my background in EMS has sparked a strong interest in trauma care, leading me to consider a switch to the ED. Interestingly, I was recently offered an interview at a local county hospital, which is also a Level 1 trauma center and much closer to home. However, since I've already signed a contract with my current employer, I'm hesitant to make any moves that might be perceived negatively or burn bridges.
I would deeply appreciate any advice from those who have faced similar dilemmas early in their careers. How did you handle transitions or opportunities without compromising professional relationships? Any insights or advice would be immensely helpful.

I know this sub focuses mainly on US universities, but I’ve seen many posts discussing the choice of which one to attend, and having struggled with said choice for months now without any progress towards one side, I thought you guys might be able to help me.
I’m an international student who applied to two unis in Switzerland, ETH Zurich for mechanical engineering and St. Gallen for economics and finance. It’s now pretty much certain that I’ll be accepted to both. There is no significant difference in cost and my parents are thankfully able to afford both. The reason why I’m struggling with this decision is that there are so many different factors to consider and that it seems like both schools are polar opposites in every single one.
ETH is ranked #7 worldwide overall, #6 in engineering, and #2 in Europe overall, but is considered one of the most difficult universities in the world with one of the lowest rates of graduation. I’m confident that I’ll manage, but it’s probably going to be very stressful and many students have said that they never have any free time during their studies. On the other hand, the prestige and history of the school makes it a great option in terms of the connections, recognition and opportunities, one of which is an exchange semester. My girlfriend is going to attend Dartmouth College in the US and we plan to have a long-distance relationship for the next three years. ETH offers an exchange program with the mechanical engineering department of the University of Pennsylvania, which would bring us closer for a while.
St. Gallen is ranked #41 worldwide and #5 in Europe in business schools, and from what I’ve heard from students there it’s a much more friendly environment and the mental health of students is significantly better. I’m 100% certain studying in this school will be considerably more enjoyable. It also has great connections in the financial industry, with nearly all prominent investment banks doing on-campus recruiting. In addition, students there generally get higher grades, (grading in ETH is extremely tough) leading to more success amongst those who apply for a master’s degree in the US, which is something I’d also eventually like to do.
Another huge factor to consider is the subjects themselves. I’ve always been good at math and physics, which makes engineering, which I have a real interest for, a solid choice. I also feel like it’s always been a huge part of my personality and the way my friends perceive me to be the “nerdy one,” having always excelled in academics and looking at things in a technical way. This is why I believe that studying engineering kind of “completes” me in a way.
However, finance has always been a passion for me, much more so than engineering or any other subject. I’ve been trading stocks since I was 14, and my dream job is to work in the financial industry. This is why I kind of feel like not studying it could be kind of a waste, even though engineering is generally thought of as the “safer” option. Opposing this, my mother says that someone with an engineering degree can easily be a banker, but someone with a finance degree can’t be an engineer, which is fair.
The final factor I’ve considered is how the development of AI will change the labor and employment markets of both these industries, and while that’s near-impossible to predict, it feels like an engineering degree (which includes classes in things like stochastics and machine learning) be useful in such a future so oriented towards AI and data.
Anyways, sorry for the long post. I’d forever appreciate any insight from you guys, I’ve seen you provide many people here with valuable help.

I am (hopefully) leaving my current school at the end of this year, and moving on to a new district. This year will mark the end of my 6th year of teaching, and I have spent my entire career working in the same school.
For context, I work in public school in the US.
I work in special education, in a mostly self-contained classroom for students who need the highest levels of support offered in my district. There is one other classroom in this program (I will call it Life Skills- that is not the name, but my district has a unique and distinct name for the program).
Although the Life Skills program is a special education class, due to our students complex health, social/emotional, and behavioral needs, we tend to be our own little sub-department, if you will. Because of this, the people who I work closely with and who know my work are the other teacher, my para educators/instructional aides depending on your location, and specialists (speech therapists, OT/PT), and administration. I do collaborate with the PE department to make sure we have accessible activities set up for the students, but they haven’t actually seen me teach.
I’ve gotten letters of recommendation from the other Life Skills teacher, one of my paras, an SLP who just retired last year but who I worked with for my entire career, and a 1:1 nurse who supported an incredibly medically fragile student in my classroom for the last 3 years. I will also be getting one from my evaluating administrator at some point this week.
So, my question is, can you list the same people who wrote you letters of recommendation as references? I don’t mean on my resume, where I put references available upon request most of our school districts have systems where you create a profile, fill everything out, upload docs, etc., and many have a references section. If not, I do have a few people I could ask- I have positive professional relationships with my colleagues- but they don’t necessarily know exactly what I do and how well I do it.
So, to sum up an essay that could have been a 2-3 line question: is it ok (or perhaps normal/typical) to list the people who’ve written you letters of recommendation as references as well?

Misc: while managing school, I actually did a small business from scratch (the website, marketing, production, mailing everything but I’m not sure if I should include this to my portfolio, it’s a bit unrelated & random?) - I started a small business in sec 1 which made quite an income but most importantly I learned a lot! Like customers behaviours, time management, negotiations skills etc!
