The Restored and Rediscovered film festival begins Monday at the Jacob Burns Film Festival in New York City. It's meant to put a spotlight on movies that have been since lost.

Nearly half of all movies made before 1950 have been lost, according to some estimates. That's why film historians and archivists are racing to preserve older movies. The Restored and Rediscovered Film Festival spotlights these efforts, and it kicks off today at the Jacob Burns Film Center in Pleasantville, N.Y. One of the festival's offerings is this rarely seen 1971 film, "Bushman." It's about the racial politics of 1960s America as seen through the eyes of a Nigerian immigrant.

CHANG: Senior film programmer and critic Monica Castillo is here to tell us more. Welcome.
MONICA CASTILLO: Thank you for having me.
CHANG: Well, thanks for being with us. So can we start with that film, "Bushman"? Like, I've heard it described as half drama, half documentary. What was this film about exactly?
CASTILLO: It's a really interesting film that blends narrative nonfiction and fiction. You're following a Nigerian exchange student as he kind of explores identity, ideas of home and belonging in counterculture San Francisco in the late 1960s. And he even embraces the name Bushman as well. You know, and his different questioning and answers throughout the different characters that he meets.
But then all of a sudden, the movie comes to a screeching halt. And then somebody else comes in front of the frame and tells you that the actor playing the main character was arrested on his own college campus and deported. So then that's when the documentary aspect really comes in. And it's a talking point for the way that Black students are treated, the way that immigrants are treated. It's a really remarkable film.
CHANG: So interesting.
CASTILLO: Yeah.
CHANG: Well, I do want to talk about the work involved in bringing a film like "Bushman" to audiences on the big screen. Like, what does it take to restore a film? What do archivists have to do to resurrect some of these films, exactly?
CASTILLO: Yeah. So it really depends on the film itself and what condition it's in. There's usually a scanning process, digitizing it. And then once it's in a computer, they can fix the imperfections, whether that be mold or color degradation or scratches. And then through that process, we're able to get another copy on the other end. So that's what we're able to show.
CHANG: What's fascinating about this for me is when I think of restored films, I think of, like, the old silent films or the early talkies. But we're talking about films that are much more modern. Like, I know one of the films you're showing is the 1960 British horror thriller "Peeping Tom."

CHANG: Which I understand that critics hated when the movie came out. So tell me why you decided to showcase that movie here.
CASTILLO: Absolutely. And they sure did hate it at that time. But...
CHANG: And why? What was so awful about this movie?
CASTILLO: It was controversial in the way that it depicted violence. And it sort of equated, you know, movie making with a sense of warriorism. I mean, that's very much what it's playing with, but maybe it was a little too ahead of its time. So even though it came out about the same time that "Psycho" did, you know, Alfred Hitchcock was celebrated, and Michael Powell had to deal with the sort of career fallout with all of these negative reviews over "Peeping Tom." But now with this new restoration, I mean, you get to really appreciate the amount of texture and color work that he's working with. Like, he really immerses you in the main character's sort of mania, and it's really fascinating.
CHANG: So what do you ultimately hope that people will take away from watching these films years and years later?
CASTILLO: I really just hope that they keep an eye out for these restorations. They are so special, and you get to see so much more. I was just thinking of the Iranian New Wave film "The Runner," which we have in our series. Before, I had seen a sort of VHS scan copy off of YouTube, and you lost so much of the story.
CHANG: Yeah.
CASTILLO: And then now with this restoration, there's whole pieces of the story that now come together. And you feel this character's journey in a such more emotional and visceral way. That's part of the movie magic.

I'm PBI noob but an experienced PowerPoint user.. Ive put together a thorough data analysis of a call centre on PBI, covering multiple pages (I think that's termed a report in PBI-speak). I want to take an audience through the salient aspects, and demonstrate some of the flexibility inherent in the cross filtering, slicers etc, as well as show them a "dashboard" of key metrics and finally some conclusions. My question is, how to go about it? I could put together a page or 2 in PBI with intro, conclusion etc and walk them through all the pages in PBI. Or I could have those slides in PowerPoint, and include charts from the PBI in that. Or I could start in PowerPoint, and then switch to a bit of a dive into PBI and finally return to PowerPoint. Various options are feasible. I just wanted to hear your experience of what works well.

both of them are loosely based on book 1, but after reading book 2/3 realized Netflix show lifted portions of book 2 and 3 as well although they don’t make a big diff at this point in the story where we are at
The Tencent show is lengthy and drags often but by the end of it, you feel a lot more connected to the story than the Netflix show
Especially the character of wang Miao and Da Shi — they work a lot better in the Chinese show and I found myself really rooting for wang Miao by the end of the Tencent show, the actor who plays him captures the spirit and demeanor of a relatively young scientist really well
In contrast, none of the Netflix characters connect - they are glossy, polished and artificial. The only one which stood out really was wade and maybe will
The Tencent show crams a lot into its 30 episodes and the world building and discussion of science is more natural and detailed versus the pop quiz / culture treatment of Netflix
However the production quality or Tencent is relatively poor - and while i watched it on Amazon prime, I don’t know if they made a proper 4 k version. The quality of CGI and characters faces in the 3 body game felt so dated like 90s video games - Netflix was better in this regard
Now the books —
Nothing much I can say that will add to what many veterans and commentators have already added but I will say this —
the author does a beautiful job w the “science reveals” and this is where he shines the best, lot more so than character descriptions or narration. I found myself skipping pages where there wasn’t much going on in terms of forward progress (like the old guy who owns a mine) and L J ‘s dream girl fantasies
Maybe because it was written like almost two decades ago — the authors sensibilities seem dated — in particular he takes a really dim view of men who are in touch w their feminine side and keeps harping on it again and again when he describes future earth. I get it he wants “manly men” to be in charge but could he be any more overt about it lol
Overall probably among the best in terms of hard science fiction — atleast until the last portion (say last 1/3) of book 3 when it starts to really get gimmicky and veers into total fantasy type stuff
I am really looking forward to what Tencent does w books 2 and 3

• I certainly wouldn’t do it for such paltry amounts of money. (i.e., anything less than $1,000 per victim.)
• I certainly wouldn’t choose high school & college students as my “target audience” to scam, considering that most people without college degrees have abysmally low annual incomes. Why choose low-income victims when it would be much more profitable to target high-income, high-net-worth individuals earning at least six figures a year? I have knowledge in business consulting, and I promise you that a business owner would be a MUCH more lucrative mark than a low-income college student.
• I wouldn’t choose such a time & energy-draining method of scamming people. Also, communicating back and forth with potential clients is an absurdly long time sink since only less than 10% of all potential clients who reach out to me actually become paying clients of mine. I don't watch many TV shows or modern films nor do I play video games so if screen time is a big part of your life then we likely won't have a lot in common. Prayer, reading (usually a fiction and nonfiction going at the same time,) saying "stop that" to the animals, playing music (guitar,) and working out is my normal daily routine. I host these workshops because I have my own writing goals but also because I want to encourage writing as something that can be an enjoyable process. Writing workshops are a place to receive critiques on your work. It's a great place to go when you're unsure of some writing and want to find ways to improve it.
Anyone is welcome to come. People are welcome to bring any type of writing, including comics or anything that uses text. It means we will read fiction, nonfiction, poetry, prose, plays, comics, creative essays, and lyrics; if there's something that isn't mentioned, just ask me. You're even welcome to come as a reader to enjoy reading all the great work people are doing before it's a finished product. I always find it interesting. If you think you can find it interesting, I welcome you to come.
We will read during the workshop, so there’s no pressure to read beforehand. Keep in mind time constraints too, so keep work to a reasonable length. (I want to apologize in advance if some of these concerns are a bit all over the place. I’ve lurked around reddit for years but writing posts is new territory for me.)
I’m an artist and hobbyist writer working on writing for a long form comic. I want to give just enough information in regard to the parameters of the project’s story so people understand the scope and where I’m coming from. It’s sort of superhero meets magical realism for a mature audience from a queer latino lens (doing the whole “write what you know” thing mixed with a lot of self indulgence, haha.)
I’ve done a lot of work over the years in regards to say, individual characters and their interactions with one another, the subplots, the incident that kicks off the story, world building in general, so on and so forth. But all of these things ultimately rely on thematic choice, which in and of itself is also interrelated with your choice of antagonist. A piece that is lighthearted and simple in theme for a child audience is very likely not going to have an antagonist that is super multifaceted and complex with a lust for violence, for example.
I think I’m struggling with trying to figure out what I’m trying to convey to my audience. What the point of this story is. There are a lot of things that are important to me that I feel like are in conflict with one another when it comes to creating a long form comic. There is a side of me that wants to make a point in my art and my stories about how a better world is out there, that change is possible in a miserable, difficult world so long as you keep believing yourself even if it is difficult to see a good future in sight. But there is also a side of me that wants to treat my art and stories as a sandbox where I can write about and experiment with strange, weird, uncomfortable, gross, odd things and reclaim the idea of the “degenerate” in these fictional worlds where ultimately there isn’t any sort of Aesop’s-fable-esque lesson about why things happen or where bad guys are all punished and everything is better in the end.
I think I’m torn between wanting to create something that people can examine critically versus wanting to create something where the notions of romanticizing, normalizing, etc-ing things that are obviously shitty things to do irl go out the window because it’s just a fictional space where things can get weird and dumb or dark and strange and pointless. But maybe I’m torn through all these things growing up gen z in a world of people (and I am not immune to this) who can simultaneously jump back and forth between interesting social critique and chronically online rhetoric that is akin to satanic panic “its the video games that are makin’ the damn kids violent” type shit.
I don’t think I want to create something immune to critique, or critique aside, I don’t think it’s ever possible to create something that won’t have people disliking it for reasons that can both be superficial and also deep and genuine that could expose an unseen bias. That’s just what creating things and taking up space can entail. The point of the struggle I’m having is because I want to create something that is ultimately coherent (and ideally is for an audience that knows the difference between fiction and reality, lol.)
I don’t think that the two things I’m struggling to choose between are even mutually exclusive, but they are different enough in my mind that it’s creating this huge block in which I’ve gone years sort of developing around this huge void in the middle of my story where I vaguely plan some parts of some characters’ development paths where something should happen but I don’t know why another actor or force would do those things to them. I think that’s really what I’m missing: compelling antagonistic motivation.
My protagonists all individually have their own motivations that are related to their personal lives and some I jokingly say get in each other’s ways with such frequency that it’s hard to find an antagonist more compelling than that, but this isn’t supposed to be a slice of life comic about the difficulties of being a superhero. If that were the case, I think I’d be all set. But I’m not really interested in that. I’m trying to create a story that involves heroes facing off against a larger, greater antagonistic force that ultimately puts them in a position where they work together. I know the world they live in, I know the visual aesthetics of the world at large, I know what the antagonists do to kick off the story, but I don’t know why they do it. And because I lack a general idea as to why the villains are motivated to do the things that they do, I don’t have a sense of direction as to how the plot develops aside from knowing I want things to peak at X point, but I can’t tell how it would get to the point where it peaks. And because I don’t know what direction I want to take it, or if the two styles in my approach can even coexist in this story, I’ve been stuck in this perpetual stun-lock for years as I just kind of work around it in hopes that at some point divine inspiration will strike and I’ll figure it all out (when that’s not really how this kinda stuff works.)
I think I’m just writing here because I want to see if I can get some sort of sense of direction, or even if anyone else has felt similarly, and if they’ve managed to find a way out, how. I feel like whenever I want to lean too much in one direction (ie. creating some sort of concrete point vs being fully self indulgent) I lose a part of myself and the work I’ve currently put into the work. I just wish there was some way these things could work in harmony in my mind, or work in harmony in general- and most importantly, how that would even work.

Hi! I recently rediscovered how much I love the magic of writing letters by hand. I was sending a friend a graduation gift and decided to write a letter to convey how much they meant to me and how proud I was of their accomplishment. It was fun to get fancy stationary and slow down to write. I hadn't written a letter in years and realized how much I enjoy it.

I mostly read fiction and have two active writing projects going so I don't have a lot of time to do the nonfiction research I need for my big writing project. I usually overcome this by watching lecture series or If I can find an academic/educational documentary that doesn't waste too much time and isn't geared toward entertainment. I don't have much experience with military history and tactics and I would like to know if anyone has a good lecture series or documentary on the history or practice of cavalry warfare. My focus is pretty wide in this request, but If you have any particularly good audiovisual resources (lectures, documentaries, etc.) on military history from the 18th-mid 19th century that would also be super helpful.
