2024.05.14 16:32 Workingmama2923 MIL left me voicemail on Mother’s Day
For some background - my husband and I have been together since junior year of high school. We are now 37 - have been married almost 14 years, two kids ages 7 and 9.
His relationship with his mom has always been strained. The first time I met her when I was 17 she looked at me then back to my hubby and said “well i hope you use a condom”. When we got engaged she told him “theres so many fish in the sea”. So obviously her distaste for me has been since day one.
Ive expressed so many times over the last 20 years how I dont want to be in the middle of their discord and finally in 2022 asked her to please not call me or text me and to communicate only with her son as I need to protect my mental health and can not put up with constantly being blamed for my husband wanting no relationship and not allowing her around the kids.
My husband has also not spoken to her or responded to any calls or texts from her since around this time. So naturally in her head this is all my fault.
On Mother’s Day she called my cell. I did not answer. She starts off her message purposely calling me by the wrong name and then saying “whatever u wanna be called”. She then moved on to say its so difficult to talk to me bc Im always so mean. Its horrible and unhealthy for us to hold onto anger or the past. Everyone thinks its strange we behave this way.
This obviously ruined my day a bit. My husband was like just ignore it, she wants you to react and wants to piss us off so we look crazy. Anyone who knows us knows you arent mean and that shes not right in the head.
I know he is right and that shes just trying to get a reaction and she craves attention even if negative.
Should I just block her phone number at this point to not have to read or listen to her messages - I really dont understand why she cant respect such a simple request to not call or text me and only communicate with her son.

2024.05.14 16:31 sa1622 The Next Big Long: $BOWL
The Next Big Long: $BOWL
Feel bad you have missed out on the recent pandemonium amongst WSB’s favorite shit stocks?
Meet $BOWL. 20.7 million share float, of which 14 million shares are shorted. With a 72.4% short interest, BOWL boasts a 8-9% fee to borrow shares.
Utilization is already at 99%, and after the recent events this week in a myriad of stocks whose names shall not be mentioned, BOWL seems poised to be the next big long.
As for what they do, $BOWL is the owner and operator of many a bowling lanes across the country. Who doesn’t love bowling? Imagine how many times you could go bowling if this thing 🚀.
As an aside, so many shares are shorted that institutional ownership of the stock is listed on yahoo finance as 113%. How is this possible? This is only possible for one of two reasons:
- The data was reported in error
- So many shares are short that synthetic shares are created thus wrongly implying institutions own more than the float itself. Imagine said scenario;
Let's assume Company XYZ has 20 million shares outstanding and Institution A owns all 20 million. In a shorting transaction, institution B borrows five million of these shares from Institution A, then sells them to Institution C. If both A and C claim ownership of the shares shorted by B, the institutional ownership of Company XYZ could be reported as 25 million shares (20 + 5)—or 125% (25 ÷ 20). In this case, institutional holdings may be incorrectly reported as more than 100%.
So, whose ready to knock down some fucking short pins?

2024.05.14 16:26 vivalaquarius My dog and puppy are not getting along like I hoped
A few weeks ago, my dad and I adopted a puppy while visiting a local shelter to take home to the rest of the family. We named her Bailey. Bailey is about 14 or 15 weeks old as I type this. She's a mutt, but we're almost positive she has a lot of boxer in her. We took her home to meet my family as well as our other dog, Harley. Harley is an 11 year old newfoundland (so she's quite the old lady.) She's incredibly sweet, patient, and docile, and she perks right up around other dogs so we thought bringing a new one home would make her happy (especially since she used to have two older brothers.) I guess we didn't realize that bringing home a puppy was a little too much of an age gap
When they were first introduced, the meeting went decently. They sniffed each other, Bailey got excited, but Harley grew tired with her energy quickly. That's fine. She's an old girl so she's not nearly as energetic as they used to be. I assumed that in the next week or so Harley would warm up to Bailey and they'd be super close, especially since Harley has been known to be best friends with anything that breathes no matter what species
Instead their relationship just got worse
Bailey loves Harley. She follows her around everywhere and always wants to play or get close to her. Harley, on the other hand, can't stand it. She'll run off into another room, jump up on a high piece of furniture, or bark at Bailey until she leaves. Now it's gotten to the point where Harely growls and snarls which she has NEVER done before
I don't know how I can get Bailey to understand that Harley gets overwhelmed by her energy and having her personal space invaded. Even when Harley's growling, Bailey will continue to be all over her. Sometimes Harley is at fault though. Bailey could be minding her own business not even looking at Harley and she'll still bark at her. So really, Bailey needs to understand boundaries and Harley needs to understand that Bailey is a part of the family now
It's so disheartening seeing their relationship like this. I feel really guilty for making Harley so miserable, but unfortunately for her, my family and I have absolutely no plans to return Bailey since we've grown attached and she's not a danger
If anyone has any advice on how I can help them get along, that would be very much appreciated, but I'm mostly just writing this to get my feelings off my chest

2024.05.14 16:25 Techsav25 How my iPhone got stolen and how Find My helped me retrieve it! [Long Story]
Getting an iPhone in India is basically a huge deal for an individual. It involves a lot of financial planning and timing to get the latest iPhone. I come from a middle-class Indian family and I am no different. When Apple released the iPhone 14 Pro series with the Dynamic Island, I was really into it. But, working as a tech writer and having the knowledge that Apple would add the same to the lower-end iPhone 15 models, I waited a year, and Apple did add the Dynamic Island to the lower-end iPhone models in 2023.
As I was already planning to get the iPhone 15, I had saved for it. Hence, without a second thought, I got the device in October 2023. It was a blue iPhone 15 and it was a big deal for me!
Fast forward to February 2024, I was going on a planned trip to Kasol with my friends. We had to catch a train from Sealdah, Kolkata, and to get there, we planned to take a local train to Sealdah station. So, we got to our nearest local station and were waiting for the train. During that whole waiting time, a person was standing right next to us and was fiddling with his phone but also giving questionable looks to us.
The train finally came and if you are an Indian, you would know the amount of struggle that one needs to go through to get on a packed local train. We all had rucksack backpacks and went through the struggling ordeal to simply get on the train. That was not all! During the whole ride, I could not move anywhere or any body part due to the sheer amount of people surrounding me.
When we reached Sealdah, our final station, I got down with my friends. Then, my mother called my girlfriend's phone to check on us and told her that she could not call me as my phone was switched off. I thought that my phone was not switched off and should be right in my pocket. I went on to check my pocket only to find out that it was gone! It most probably was the guy who was giving the looks to us when we were waiting for the train.
Naturally, I started panicking big time and went straight to the Railway Police station nearby to report it. By the time we filed a report, our main train left the station and as a result, our entire trip was canceled. Without a phone in my hand and after having a dreadful day, I went back home.
Find My [The Savior]
Now, as my girlfriend also had an iPhone 11 and was a part of the Apple Family plan, I used it to put the stolen iPhone 15 in Lost Mode via the Find My app. I checked the location of the phone in Find My and it showed a station that falls between our local station and Sealdah.
My aunt is in the police force, so I informed her about the stolen device. She told me that as it is an iPhone, it would be difficult to locate its position. However, she got the IMEI slots of the device blocked and said that if anyone puts a SIM card in it and tries to use it, the device will be marked. Only then the police could locate the user and grab him.
I knew that no one would be able to unlock it and put a SIM to use it. Apple has some great security features that prevent thieves from accessing personal information stored in an iPhone. Hence, I was sure that he would never be able to unlock or reset the device.
Someone once told me that stolen mobile devices are taken to Bangladesh and sold in black markets. If the mobile devices are locked, they even open up the parts and sell them individually.
Days went by and there were no updates about the phone, neither from the police nor from Find My. As I work with iPhones and as it was so dear to me, I broke an FD to get another iPhone 15 in the meantime. I also closed the EMI for the previous device with the same and accepted the situation.
Now, a few weeks ago, the stolen iPhone 15 started pinging locations in Find My on my iPhone. In the meantime, my girlfriend also got an iPhone 15 and started checking the Find My app obsessively on her device to track its locations daily. Some days it showed multiple locations, and some days it was stagnant.
The more regular locations from where the iPhone was pinging were near a place called Canning. The place is known as the "Gateway of Sunderbans" and is one of the biggest crime hubs. If you search for Canning on YouTube or Google, you will get a gist of it.
Citing the last known location of the iPhone showing Canning station, I and my partner went there one day despite the risks, dangers, and warnings. Although we did not get any further location updates that day, we scoured around the place but did not talk to anyone. While returning home disappointed, we stopped by the police station there to let them know about the situation.
The next day, the iPhone showed multiple locations near the city of Kolkata, though none of them were much closer to my home. However, the day after that, my girlfriend woke me up in the morning to show that the phone was pinging a location that was very close to my place. Not only that, the phone pinged the same location thrice since she started checking the Find My app. So, I immediately got up and went to the location.
It was in a place called Dover Lane (Kolkata), near a residential tower and a hotel. I went there, parked the car, and started hovering around the place, trying to locate the person who we suspect stole the phone. During that time, the phone pinged the location once or twice, and at one point, it even showed that the device was "With You" in Find My.
I stood at the location for four hours and tried to spot the suspect. During that whole time, I kept the Find My app open on my current phone to aid the stolen device ping the location. However, it showed location was updated 3 hours ago.
Hopelessly, I sat in my car, thinking of returning home without the device. Just then, I saw this guy with a red t-shirt passing by my car. He looked like a young migrant worker or a daily laborer. His t-shirt was a bit torn and his pants were pretty dirty. I don't know why I looked at him in the first place but that is when I saw him take a phone out of his pocket.
"Is that a pale-blue colored phone?" Yes. He turned on the screen. "Is that the iPhone's Dynamic Island?" Yes! "Why is he on a setup screen?" I have no idea!
Right at that moment, I check the Find My app. After 3 hours, the location was finally updated and the "With You" tag was back. I hurriedly got out of my car and followed the guy for a few meters. He stopped at a local shop to get a beedi. Just when he was about to light it, I went up to him and said "Show me your phone, brother!". He answered, that there was no balance to make a call. I said that I didn't want to make a call.
"Just give the phone. I want to see it once!", I said. He immediately got it out and handed the device. During my usage, I once dropped the iPhone 15 and that made a tiny dent on the chassis, just above the screen. I checked for it, and it sure was there!
I grabbed the phone tight and said "Let's go to the police, kid!" Bewildered, he said, "That is not my phone, I got it from a friend! My own phone was stolen a few days ago and my friend gave this to me for the time, until I get a new one. If you want to go to the police, I sure can but believe me I did not know that this phone was stolen."
Now, it is worth noting that this guy was not the guy who we suspected stole the device. He was 25-28 years of age. This guy was just 18! He was still a kid.
I asked him where does he live and what does he do for a living. He said that he lives near Canning and works as a housekeeper in the city. Then I asked him, you cannot use this iPhone whatsoever, it is in the setup-screen and is showing locked to owner, so what exactly are you doing with this device? He said that when my friend gave it to me, I liked this phone. So whenever I leave the house, I carry it around just for "fancy"!
We knew that if we took him to the police, they would lock him up and beat him. The kid was just 18. So, after taking his name, address, and father's name, we let him go!
I emailed the GRPS at Sealdah where I first filed the FIR that I got the phone back.
To be honest, I had zero hopes of getting back the stolen iPhone, and that too with Find My. But thanks to my girlfriend who never lost hope and also motivated me to try and retrieve the device.
After all this, I have a newfound respect for Apple's Find My network and am surprised that it works so very well. It is one of the most underrated features of an iPhone that more people need to appreciate.
So, that is my iPhone story. If you ever lose your iPhone or have it stolen, do not, I repeat, DO NOT underestimate the power of Find My, and above all, never lose hope!

2024.05.14 16:24 Ok_Educator_3152 Roth IRA for married couple
My wife and I don’t make much money as I finish up my doctorate program. Currently we only have one Roth IRA under my name with her as 100% beneficiary. We wouldn’t be able to max out the married joint amount ($14,000 this yr I think?) with our current income. Is it worth starting her own Roth IRA or just have the one account and try and contribute as much as we can to that one? With just the one account could we contribute more than the individual max contribution ($7000) if we are able based on finances?

2024.05.14 16:09 Rangerborn14 ModuleNotFoundError: No module named 'pymysql'
I've been running a code that generates a login page for a desktop app. By logging in succesfully, the user would be sent to the main UI of the app ("Mainwin.py"). However, everytime I tried to log in, it gives me an error about 'pymysql' not being found, even though I already have it installed. The error is caused by a file named "actividad.py", which is used to show what user has been using the app lately:
from PyQt5 import QtCore, QtGui, QtWidgets from PyQt5.QtWidgets import QDialog, QVBoxLayout, QTableWidget, QTableWidgetItem import pymysql class ActividadWindow(QDialog): def __init__(self): super().__init__() self.setWindowTitle("Actividad de Usuarios") self.setGeometry(100, 100, 400, 300) # Ajusta el tamaño según tus necesidades self.layout = QVBoxLayout() self.tableWidget = QTableWidget() self.layout.addWidget(self.tableWidget) self.setLayout(self.layout) # Conectar a la base de datos y cargar datos en la tabla self.cargar_datos() def cargar_datos(self): conexion = pymysql.connect(host='127.0.0.1', user='root', password='password', database='test') cursor = conexion.cursor() cursor.execute("SELECT * FROM actividad") datos = cursor.fetchall() self.tableWidget.setRowCount(len(datos)) self.tableWidget.setColumnCount(len(datos[0])) encabezados = [description[0] for description in cursor.description] self.tableWidget.setHorizontalHeaderLabels(encabezados) for fila, dato_fila in enumerate(datos): for columna, dato in enumerate(dato_fila): self.tableWidget.setItem(fila, columna, QTableWidgetItem(str(dato))) conexion.close()
What's strange is that when I run the "Mainwin.py" file, it all runs smoothly. It's only when I run from the login page code that the error is happening. Here's the code of the login page for reference:

Frequently Asked Questions: Q: Why is X artist higher than Y artist on the 200 chart, even though X artist sold less?
A: This is because of a discrepancy between Billboard's ranking and the ranking from the website that the sales data is scraped from
Q: Where do you get the sales data from?
A:
https://hitsdailydouble.com/sales_plus_streaming Q: What does "err" mean on the 200 chart?
A: If you are seeing "err", that means that the bot I use to gather chart data couldn't identify sales data for a particular album because of a difference in album naming between Billboard and HitsDailyDouble

2024.05.14 16:05 coco_l0ko My Wife is a High Priestess who constantly struggles with her Mental Health and I Don’t Know How to Help Her.
Hello, you wonderful beings!
My name is Candace 28F and I am an Empath (I hated it at first, but now it’s pretty cool to be able to tap into my own energies to decipher things). I have always struggled with MDD (Major Depressive Disorder), General Anxiety, Panic Disorder, PTSD, Insomnia, Paranoia, you name anything similar to these and I probably have been diagnosed with it. Enough about me though.
My wife 27F is such a Beautiful, Gracious, Caring, Genuine person in the whole friggin’ world. When she first showed me her “witchy stuff,” I thought she was joking around. Then she started explaining everything to me. Then she pulled up her sleeve to show me the Wiccan Creed tattooed on her upper right arm. It took me a while to FULLY believe her.
We just got married on February 27, 2024. I originally asked her to be my girlfriend on February 27, 2017. 7 years together. We know each other so well. One’s a strong Empath and the other one is a Witch. Since we are 2 lesbians, we are OBSESSED WITH RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE. My wife always wanted to read Tarot, but she was never gifted a deck. Until one day. An acquaintance literally gave her a RUPAUL’S DRAG RACE TAROT DECK. Normally, she specialized in Pendulum work, but lost her Pendulum a few months ago so she was happy with the Tarot cards.
Fast Forward to Now: She is depressed. Her mental health is not contained like it usually is. No, there hasn’t been any change to her medication and she continues to take it daily because I dispense it to her.
So I guess I have 2 questions:
- I’m not going to disclose her medical information, but I can tell you that she is NOT schizophrenic, not that there is anything wrong with that. If she continues to worsen, I will bring her to the ER.
- Do any of you who have mental health issues have days like my wife? Where you’re barely yourself, disassociating, etc. If so, could you please give advice on what I can do for my wife to help her?
- Is there ritual/spell that I could do for her to help her mental health? She’s asked me to do magick with her before and it was very powerful. If I’m not allowed to do it by myself since I’m not Wiccan, I can ask one of her friends to do it.
- Any other advice y’all have, please don’t HES I state to reach out!
I just want my wife to go back to her normal self. I need to help her. She’s been in and out of institutions since 14 years old. I don’t want to do that to her again. Any advice from “her people” would be gratefully appreciated. Thank you all.Blessed Be.

2024.05.14 15:58 FyrestarOmega Heather Pressdee - an American Lucy Letby?
I've mentioned the case of Heather Pressdee in this subreddit before. Heather Pressdee was a nurse in the US state of Pennsylvania prior to being charged with murdering a number of her elderly patients with insulin.
Local commentary around the announcement of her arrest was... markedly different than that surrounding Ms. Letby's trial:
https://www.reddit.com/Pennsylvania/comments/17n9vig/former_nurse_heather_pressdee_now_linked_to_17/ https://www.reddit.com/medicine/comments/17nbov4/former_nurse_heather_pressdee_now_linked_to_17/ https://www.reddit.com/nursing/comments/17nmyq8/former_nurse_heather_pressdee_now_linked_to_17/ As it happens, Ms. Pressdee accepted a guilty plea less than two weeks ago:
https://www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news/pennsylvania-nurse-pleads-guilty-killing-patients-lethal-doses-insulin-rcna150366 The Times wrote an article about Ms. Pressdee's crimes, and drew parallels to Lucy Letby:
https://archive.ph/VHF1g Last week Pressdee, 41, pleaded guilty to three charges of murder and was sentenced to life in prison, narrowly escaping the death penalty.
She is suspected of being behind the deaths of at least 14 others, aged 43 to 104, as well as attempting to kill five more. All were given insulin whether they needed it or not, quietly injected while others were not around to witness it.
If Pressdee has killed that many people, it would make her one of the most prolific serial killers in the US and certainly the biggest in the state of Pennsylvania.
Her case has parallels with that of Lucy Letby, the British paediatric nurse who in August was found guilty of seven counts of murder and seven of attempted murder, and Harold Shipman, the doctor based in Yorkshire who killed an estimated 250 of his patients, making him Britain’s most prolific serial killer.
The probable cause affadavit filed in May 2023 can be reviewed at this link:
https://www.attorneygeneral.gov/wp-content/uploads/2023/11/2023-11-02-Heather-PRESSDEE-Criminal-Complaint.pdf Included in the probable cause affadavit are facebook posts about the effects of insulin, texts found on Ms. Pressdee's phone where she repeatedly joked about killing people, a search for the obituary of a decedent (pages 20-21) Because of the US nature of at-will employment, Ms. Pressdee was able to be shuffled between several hospitals between 2018 and 2023, before the nursing board took action. Most chilling, the complaint ends with this paragraph (emphases mine):
The defendant has admitted to harming, with the intent to kill, all patients named in this Affidavit. Her conduct spanned approximately five years over the course of eleven facilities in Armstrong, Allegheny, Westmoreland and Butler Counties. Her criminal conduct exhibited a pattern of behavior. PRESSDEE would often work the medication cart, administer insulin during the night shift when staffing was lowest and the facilities were quiet. The victims would often remain undiscovered until morning. PRESSDEE often took steps to ensure her victims would expire prior to shift change so that they wouldn't be sent to the hospital where her scheme could be discovered through medical testing such as a C-peptide tests [sic]. If PRESSDEE sensed the victim would "pull through" there is a pattern of her taking additional measures to try to kill the victims before they could be sent to the hospital by either administering a second dose of insulin or the use of an air embolism to ensure death. Despite PRESSDEE's efforts to conceal her actions, the investigative team uncovered the evidence detailed above in this Affidavit. The evidence along with PRESSDEE's confessions demonstrate sufficient probably cause to support the issuance of attached criminal complaint.
While Lucy Letby was arrested prior to the beginning of Ms. Pressdee's crimes, the allegations of Letby having administered air injection and poisoning by insulin were not made public until the beginning of Letby's trial in October 2022, ruling out the possibility of her having operated as a copycat killer. Ms. Pressdee's confessions also support the validity of the charges against her, even though they weren't brought until Lucy Letby's case was already public knowledge in the UK.

2024.05.14 15:38 IrinaSophia Holy New Martyr John the Goldsmith of Bulgaria (+ 1802) (May 14th)
John was from the town of Suma (Shoumen) in Bulgaria where he practiced the craft of goldsmith. He was a handsome young man of eighteen and great in virtue.
Across from his workplace lived a Muslim family including an unmarried young lady. She fell in love with John, but he did not reciprocate her feelings and rejected her advances. Insulted, she accused John before the Muslim authorities of molesting her.
John was therefore brought before the Turkish judge who gave him two choices: become a Muslim and marry the girl or die. John courageously replied that he preferred to die rather than deny his faith in Christ. This resulted in him being painfully tortured and beaten until he bled from various parts of his body. He was hung from the ceiling of his prison many times, and allowed to drop suddenly. The result of this almost killed him.
Though he was promised various gifts with flatteries if he became a Muslim, John remained steadfast in his faith. John was then placed on a spinning wheel which hurled him round and round, but no torture could shake him. They even burned his wounded flesh with lit torches, but this had no effect. Finally, John was sentenced to death and beheaded by the executioners. This took place on May 14, 1802.
His martyrdom was recorded by Saint Nikephoros of Chios. He was not officially recognized by the Bulgarian Orthodox Church as a Saint until June of 2017, when he was included under the name Saint Raiko of Shoumen. A church in his honor began to be constructed in Suma in 2006.

2024.05.14 15:31 IrinaSophia Saint Isidor of Rostov, the Fool-For-Christ (+ 1474) (May 14th)
The blessed
Isidor (Tverdislov) lived in the middle of the fifteenth century. Though Slavic by birth, he lived in Brandenburg, one of the most ancient cities of Prussia. During those years, the Slavs of this region were fiercely persecuted by the Germans, who were trying to convert the entire population to Catholicism.
When he reached adolescence and perceived the insolvency of the Roman Catholic Faith, Isidor sought to move to an Orthodox Christian land.
Belonging to the wealthy merchant class, he willingly forswore his wealth, his parents, and his inheritance, and for Christ’s sake began to roam from place to place with his staff.
We do not know exactly when Isidor converted to Orthodoxy, nor when he arrived in Russia, but he ultimately settled in Rostov, north of Moscow.
He found a marshy area within the city and chose a site slightly above the water level. There, he built a small hut with bulrush. This hut afforded no protection from the heat or the cold, since it was not covered by anything; it only concealed his great asceticism from the eyes of the world.
The Saint spent his time in the customary manner of fools-for-Christ’s sake. At night, he prayed unceasingly, allowing himself only a brief sleep. His days were spent in the city streets or marketplaces with voluntary acts of foolishness. Occasionally, he would rest his weary body on a pile of waste or manure.
He instructed and taught those who desired spiritual guidance, condemned immorality, and led many souls to the path of salvation. At night, he would pray for all of those who had caused him offense and for those whom he saw wallowing in sin.
“Oh, Isidor!” he often said to himself, and cried out: “You must pass through many sorrows to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.”
The Saint's love for the Lord was great, wherefore the Lord loved him and granted him the gift of working miracles and of prophecy.
• “On one occasion,” his biographer relates, “a Rostov merchant was with his comrades at sea during a terrible storm. The ship, probably having struck a reef, suddenly stopped and began to be broken up by the waves. The strong force of the sea threatened to destroy it.
“In their despair, all of those on board began to prepare for death. Then, in the midst of their misfortune, imitating the case of the Prophet Jonah, the voyagers decided to cast lots, supposing that the ship had stopped on account of a crime committed by one of the passengers. The lot fell on the Rostov merchant, who was also the owner of the ship. The crowd then threw the merchant into the sea together with a plank.
“Cast by the wrath of his companions into the raging sea, the hapless merchant began to surrender himself to death. Suddenly, the Blessed Isidor appeared before him, walking on the sea as if on dry land. The Saint took the merchant by the hand and asked him, ‘Do you know who I am?’ The unfortunate man, barely breathing, said: ‘Servant of God, Isidor, help me....’
“The Blessed Isidor pulled the merchant onto the piece of wood and, as if propelled by an unseen hand, the plank began to follow the ship that had already departed. When it came alongside the ship, the merchant suddenly found himself on the deck. When the other voyagers saw him in their midst, they were struck with terror and glorified the merciful God, because they understood that a miracle had taken place. The merchant kept silent, because the Saint had strictly forbidden him to tell exactly what had happened.
“When he returned to Rostov, the merchant would make a prostration to the Saint whenever he saw him from a distance; and the latter, passing nearby him, would remind him of his prohibition. Thus, the merchant would always say that God had saved him by an intervention of His Grace.”
The Blessed Isidor reposed on May 14, 1474.
He did not leave his hut at all during the last days of his earthly life, instead praying with tears until the hour of his righteous repose.
At the moment of his repose, an unusual fragrance spread throughout the entire city. Everyone marveled and began to seek its source. They soon discovered that the closer they approached the blessed Fool’s hut, the stronger the fragrance became. Someone ventured to look inside and saw the Saint lying on the ground, face upwards and his hands crossed upon his chest. He announced the death of the man of God to everyone. They buried the Saint in his hut, in the exact spot where he had reposed.
The merchant that had been saved from the sea was at the burial. Finally freed from his bond of silence, he began with sobs to relate to everyone the details of his miraculous rescue.
With the blessing of the Bishop, those who loved and revered Saint Isidor built a wooden chapel near his grave, in honor of the Ascension of the Lord, because the Saint had reposed on the eve of the Feast.
In 1566, by order of Tsar Ivan the Terrible, the wooden chapel was replaced by a stone Church. A Priest tried to open the Saint’s tomb, but an invisible power pushed him back. A silver shrine was placed on the grave in 1815, from whence flowed a steady stream of miracles by the Saint.
The celebration of the commemoration of the Saint by the Faithful began on the very day of his repose. Thirteen years later, his name officially appeared on the Russian Church Calendar.

2024.05.14 15:04 Matteoskio How to move to Svalbard
Hi, My name is Matthew and I'm 14 years old. I am from italy and I'm half american. I've been fascinated and intrigued by the snowy landscapes of not only Svalbard, but also GreenLand and Iceland, which I've visited. In the future in case I'd want to live there, can anyone tell me how I could? If anyone wonders why I would want to live there, like I have said, the snowy wasteland type of enviroment has always been my favorite. Please take this seriously😁

2024.05.14 15:01 FarragutCircle Reading The Big Book of Cyberpunk, Week 16
Welcome to
Reading The Big Book of Cyberpunk!
Each week we (
u/FarragutCircle and
u/fanny_bertram) will be reading 5-ish stories from Jared Shurin’s
The Big Book of Cyberpunk, which includes a curated selection of cyberpunk stories written from 1950 to 2022! We’ll include synopses of the stories along with links to any legally available online versions we can find. Feel free to read along with us or just stop by and hear our thoughts about some cyberpunk stories to decide if any of them sound interesting to you.
Every once in a while, we reach out to people who have more insight, due to being fans of the author or have some additional context for the story. (Or we just tricked them into it.) So please welcome
u/Kopratic who will be sharing their thoughts on "We Can Remember It For You Wholesale" by Philip K. Dick!
Section 4: Challenge In our fourth and penultimate section, editor Jared Shurin highlights how cyberpunk looks at technology that creates harm when put into practice, and later cites
Marshall McLuhan about artists as challengers. (Shurin really seems to like this McLuhan guy.) Amusingly there’s a footnote where he mentions litrpg in passing, though he says there’s no litrpg in this anthology)
“We Can Remember It For You Wholesale” by Philip K. Dick (published 1966; also available in his collection
Selected Stories of Philip K. Dick)
Quail’s desire to go to Mars leads him to a memory-implant company so he can remember going to Mars, but complications and revelations and twists ensue, hilariously.
- Special Guest Kopratic: So this guy really wants to go to Mars, but it’s pretty dang expensive. Fortunately, what’s not as expensive is paying a company to trick him into thinking he’s been to Mars by implanting false memories into his mind. Unfortunately, things go wrong, and before he writes up a scathing Yelp review, he gets his money back, his wife leaving him, and his life falling apart.
- It’s a story I’ve read before. Not this exact, specific story, but the bones of it. Virtually visiting another time or place. It’s never real, but they tend to beg the question: Do memories create reality? Maybe this particular story was one that inspired, even if indirectly, the others. Maybe it’s a trope that had been used before, and the author was just putting his own spin on it like the ones that came after.
- I did like it. I thought that it was annoying how the secretary was described as being topless in practically every scene she was in. It went from, “Oh in this society that’s a normal thing, and body paint is a sort of fashion item” to “...we get it.” It was a minor part of the story at least.
- The twists were pretty good, too. There’s a moment where you start to question things alongside the protagonist. Maybe the false memories did work. He’s not supposed to know they’re fake, but he does. But he also has things that can’t possibly be explained by ways of “implanted memories.” Or maybe they can. Even until the very end, the story keeps you guessing. It did a good job of keeping the tension alive.
- In a sense, the story asks the question, “What is reality?” and fits in nicely as an entry into the realm of cyberpunk.
- Farragut’s thoughts: We’ve read Dick before in Science Fiction. Between that story and this, if I hadn’t read two of his novels already, I would’ve thought Dick was a comedic SF writer because of how funny I’ve found his short fiction so far. I vaguely recall (ha!) having seen the movie Total Recall, but I’m not sure PKD has ever had a faithful adaptation of his works. Anyway, this is just a fun story—not as wild as the film, but just a plain fun examination of memory and reality.
- fanny’s thoughts: The editor points out that each filming of Total Recall gets worse and this is correct. I had never read the story and I did like it despite it being a story I have seen before. Dick did a great job of making the reader doubt memories and the reality for the character. There are a lot of careful details throughout the short story that play with this concept and add to the general confusion of what is real. The story is not the most amazing thing, but it is very well done and a bit twisty.
“Speed” by Misha (1988)
I think that Speed is looking for Speelyi-427 on behalf of a computer AI called Juno 888, but after that I’m lost.
- Farragut: We’ve read Misha before in Science Fiction. She’s a very cyberpunky type author, but I’ll be darned if I understand half of what’s going on here. There’s data as currency, there’s an all powerful computer named Juno 888 (I think?), there’s a car chase with a barbed-wire tripwire at neck level (ouch), there’s indigenous ghost dancers, and I had a hell of a time connecting the dots. It didn’t help that for the first couple pages I didn’t realize Speed was the character’s name, which made the story even more abstract at first. I absolutely know there’s someone out there who loves the crap out of experimental/transcendental stuff like this, but it wasn’t me.
- fanny: I was beyond confused reading this one. For half the story I thought the character was the computer, 888, but then I realized it was Speed. I am not sure that helped though. I feel like this was too experimental for me and it just missed the mark. The good part of this was the trading in data and the trying to steal data, which was an interesting technology application.
“Computer Friendly” by Eileen Gunn (1989; also available in her collection
Stable Strategies and Others)
Elizabeth and other kids are tested, and while she passes with flying covers, her new friends might lose their lives unless she can figure out a way to help them in a world where the heavily computerized future uses real brains from people and dogs.
- Farragut: Gunn is an oft-nominated writer (including for this story), but ended up winning the 2005 Nebula for “Coming to Terms”. I really loved this bizarre future (she’ll play computer fetch with her dog when he has downtime from managing data traffic), and Elizabeth is an adorable character to follow as she navigates the shocking new revelations about her world. The help she gets from some of the obscure entities on the network is perfect, especially when they realize that their current world is a little too predictable these days. Highly recommended, especially for Elizabeth’s “hacking” methods.
- fanny: I loved this story and following Elizabeth through it all. Elizabeth is a fierce, determined little girl who doesn't want anything bad to happen to her friends. She goes to extremes for this and gets help from the weirdest sources within the network system. The net system, entities, and the world are so well thought out and carefully crafted. It felt fully realized which is unusual for me to find in a short story. Absolute loved this one.
“I Was a Teenage Genetic Engineer” by Nisi Shawl (1989)
The narrator is imprisoned for her reckless genetic engineering, making new incarnations of old gods.
- Farragut: Shawl is a multiple-award-winning author and has done a lot of work on promoting diversity in SF/F. A very short story (under a thousand words), it’s also got a very mythic and poetic tone to it, like a confession as a parable. Very evocative, with lots of classical allusions.
- fanny: Such a short story and such a unique concept. I liked that the main character made the entire Pantheon and unleashed the Greek gods back on the world. I found the description of creating Psyche the best part. This story is a bit experimental, but worked for me.
“The Gene Drain” by Lewis Shiner (1989)
A generation ship ends up right back on Earth, with disturbing and amusing differences between the two groups.
- Farragut: Shiner was a member of the Turkey City Writer’s Workshop which is considered a “cradle of cyberpunk”. This story was quite amusing, and you can see the differences between the overly-technological humans on Earth and the extremely weird worshippers of Johnny Carson. The author does a great job of encapsulating all the changes since the ship left in little throwaway lines, and the ending was both disturbing and funny.
- fanny: I found the whole premise quite ridiculous, but a nice way to show how too much technology can change society. The worshippers of Johnny Carson return to earth and manage to get a leader who has a bad experience with tech. The extremes he is willing to go to is both realistic and slightly disturbing. The ending is amusing, but it is serious too. I like how Shiner balanced absurdity with real society challenges. But also cult of Carson.

Summary Of Last Earnings call: Exagen, Inc. reported strong financial results for the first quarter of 2024, with total revenue of $14.4 million driven by a significant increase in AVISE CTD ASP. The company's adjusted EBITDA improved to a negative $2 million, showcasing the positive impact of ASP improvements on the bottom line. Volume for AVISE CTD remained steady and is expected to continue growing as the company focuses on improving ordering efficiencies and educating physicians on the clinical value of the product. Exagen plans to launch new T-cell markers for SLE and additional markers for rheumatoid arthritis in the fourth quarter of 2024, which are expected to enhance the sensitivity and diagnostic performance of AVISE CTD. The company is confident in the long-term benefits of these new markers for both clinical utility and financial performance. Exagen is well-positioned to handle the FDA's proposed rule on lab-developed tests and anticipates it will create a barrier to entry for competitors, ultimately benefiting the company. Overall, Exagen is on track to achieve its goals and remains optimistic about its future growth and profitability.

2024.05.14 15:00 Honestly_ Not just EA Sports: *All* NCAA college football game covers & athletes, including Sony's NCAA GameBreaker, Sega Sports, and a few others
With the
EA Sports College Football 25 cover being released this Thursday, I thought it would be interesting to look back at all covers — and not just the EA covers, but the athletes featured on covers of rival games by Sony, Sega, and other competitors.
Competition is a good thing. Putting these in chronological order takes me back to the era where there were options (I bought my first game in the '90s, and played a lot of 2k2).
If you count the 2 players that are identifiable off of "College Football USA 96" there have been 36 cover athletes across 34 editions of college football games (plus an active coach, mascot, two band members, and an unidentified player)
This post is going to look cleaner in "old" view. You can swap the "www" with "old" in the URL or just

Various developers:
EA Sports's developers:
- High Score Productions (1993: Genesis, Sega CD; 1994-96)
- Visual Concepts (1993: SNES)
- Tiburon Entertainment (1997-98), bought/renamed EA Tiburon (1999-2013), renamed EA Orlando (2024)
- Exient Entertainment (2003: N-Gage)
Sega Sports's developers:
- BlueSky Software (1994-95) [developers of Joe Montana series]

Aspyr Media's developer:
- Nerjyzed Entertainment (2007: Windows; 2009: 360)
Further notes:
Bill Walsh was picked because there was an early-theme of having big names on sports video games.
- EA actually started this back when they were the cool, bad boy of games in the 1980s (I'm that old, they packaged their games like records and put photos of their programmers that made them look like musicians on the back) with the pioneering PC game One on One: Dr. J vs. Larry Bird (1983), later updated to Jordan vs. Bird: One on One (1988).
- Nintendo got into it by localizing Punch-Out! as Mike Tyson's Punch-Out!! (1987) for NES. EA brought out John Madden Football (1988) for PC.
- Sega was wild about this when they launched the Genesis with Arnold Palmer Tournament Golf (1989), Tommy Lasorda Baseball (1989), Pat Riley Basketball (1990), Joe Montana Football (1991).
- 1993: Bill Walsh! There even was an EA Coach K college hoops game.
Bill Walsh may have got the cover curse:
- While he had retired from the San Francisco 49ers on top, after winning his 3rd Super Bowl, he had only returned to the Farm for a year when he was picked (he had a good first tenure in the 70s before jumping to the 49ers).
- In 1992 he took the Cardinal to a Blockbuster Bowl win and a #9 rank. Signed this deal for EA.
- After the first game came out he had two bad seasons and re-retired for good.
The progression of teams is fun to see.
- 1993: the top 24 college football teams from 1992 + 24 of the all-time greatest teams since 1978. The teams were unlicensed so they used city and state names, especially where similar to their real names (e.g. Michigan). But you got some fun results like a spirited game of "South Bend, IN" vs "Raleigh, NC"
- 1994: 36 Division I-A teams, but the bowls were still not included: Instead we get Maple Bowl, Palm Bowl, Pecan Bowl, and Redwood Bowl
- 1995: first version to feature all (108 at the time) Division l-A teams, the real bowl games like Orange, Sugar, Fiesta, and Rose. Includes older names but also the Pacific Tigers, which actually dropped football before the game was released.
The rights to the title "NCAA" license wasn't obtained by EA until 1998 (as you can see there was an earlier one-off by Mindscape). Its ability to use the NCAA's brands in the the football game was actually the secondary result of a licensing deal intended primarily for an EA "March Madness" basketball game.
