Im a 30 year old, relatively healthy man. I became a firefighter at 19 after dropping out of college. I loved it. I worked full time for one agency, part time for another smaller agency and as needed for our local ambulance service. I was the youngest to be promoted to company officer status in our agency's history and lead my own shift. I was on every committee, county training group, special detail, special teams focusing on technical and water based recues. accomplishments. I received numerous awards of recognition from my departments and my fellow firemen. I ate it. I bled it.
But then I got hurt. I lost most of my hearing, and I couldn't hear or understand anything coming over our radios anymore. It was hard on scenes with all the noise too. I was a danger. So I medically retired at 28. I was told I didnt qualify for a pension because "if you can physically do any other job that would contribute to the fund, the state doesn't see you as disabled". I had a job at a company that sells fire equipment all lined up and I thought everything was good. Horrible management burned the sales guys and basically halved our pay about 6 months after I showed up. I found a job inspecting fire sprinkler systems for a multinational mega Corp and moved here. That was a year ago.
I hate it. With every fiber of my being it feels like I've stalled. And I'm not happy. But I have no degree, no experience outside of the first responder sphere, and anything I am qualified for on paper is paying shit pay. Anything thats making decent money and I know how to do, but I dont have the magical piece of paper for, they won't interview me because I'm "not qualified". Ive tried looking outside of the fire safety field, and am super passionate about the shooting sports, but the companies that work in that field all want degrees. Ive managed projects, worked with budgets, preformed HR duties, and was one of the Shift Safety Officers for my agency. Ive also been told I'm too young for management, regardless of previous acomloshments.
The last interview I had was going great, I thought, until I was told decade of experience I had accumulated at my fire department wasnt worth squat and they offered me $19/hr when the postings for the job said $60k/yr.
I can't afford to go back to school. I can't afford to open my own business with my crappy wages. I feel like I've hit a dead end.

 | Hi everyone, submitted by mcw1980 to computervision [link] [comments] I was recently tasked with finding a solution to perform OCR on handwritten forms (timesheets in my case, but this could also be applied to other handwritten forms and handwritten surveys, for example). Since I didn't find a comprehensive guide prior to doing my own research, I thought it could be useful if I shared my results here. This builds on a useful post here from last year that looked at the state of handwriting OCR in 2023, but had more of an emphasis on pure handwriting transcription rather than handwritten forms and documents in this case. I hope this summary is helpful for anybody else on a similar search. YMMV, and all of these services offer free trials to test your own documents against. If I have missed any, please add them to the comments, or let me know and I can add them. The test.I took a sample image showing a basic timesheet with handwritten text. I ran this image through as many OCR services as I could find that claimed to offer handwriting to text OCR, and compared the results. I was looking not only for accuracy in transcribing the handwriting to text, but also the ability to extract the data in a structured form, either as JSON, or as a spreadsheet (CSV or Excel).Quick summary.The two best results came from Microsoft Azure Document AI, and Handwriting OCR. Both provided near-perfect transcriptions of the test subject, and extracted structured data too.Overall, I preferred Handwriting OCR because of the better UI and direct export to Excel. Azure is a developer-focussed product so needs additional development to use it in production, but for a larger project I would also not hesitate to use it. Notes.Here's a list of the services I tried, and my notes as I went along. Most are online OCR services offering handwriting to text conversion. Also some large language models like GPT-4. As tested, the handwriting recognition was surprisingly poor, with lots of mistakes and non-words. Transkribus does offer the possibility to train on a particular style of handwriting (maybe useful if you have a lots of documents from one source), but for processing lots of documents where each document has handwriting from a new source, it looked like the handwriting to text conversion was too error-prone. This made it a non-starter for me.
Google Document AITested at: https://cloud.google.com/document-ai?hl=en#demoI expected this to be the best of all, considering Google's massive investment in AI. I tested it through the demo here. Although Google Document AI does offer extraction of table data, the results were not great, with too many transcription errors. Based on these results, I would need to carefully review each extracted table for structure and content - not great. Aside from the demo page, there is no prebuilt UI so this would need a developer to integrate into my workflow.
Microsoft Azure AITested at: https://azure.microsoft.com/en-us/products/ai-services/ai-document-intelligenceAzure Document AI Like Google, Azure is one of the leaders in AI and document automation. I expected good results and in this case I was not disappointed. Azure read all handwriting correctly, and provided a correctly-formatted table containing this data. The downside for me, similar to Google AI, is that there is no UI provided (besides a demo portal) so this needs to be built from scratch by a development team.
Pen to PrintTested at: https://www.pen-to-print.com/handwriting-to-text-online-ocrPen to Print - transcription is good but no structured data. This is a popular iOS and Android app that also has a web app too. The handwriting recognition was good, but the output was not in a structured form so the results are of limited use for my purposes.
Handwriting OCRTested at https://www.handwritingocr.comHandwritingOCR - the best results, including all the data I wanted from the form. Offers handwriting OCR and table data extraction, so this looked promising. Results were outstanding in my test - the transcription was error-free, and a separate tab allowed me to view and download the table data in Excel format. This is all provided inside a web UI with API access available.
Nanonets OCRTested at: https://nanonets.comNanonets - incomplete data and transcription errors. Offers a whole range of OCR services, including handwriting to text. At first glance, it looked impressive and I had high expectations of a good result. In my test, Nanonets managed to extract the table but with numerous handwriting transcription mistakes, so the result was only partially useful.
Google Cloud Vision AITested at: https://cloud.google.com/vision/docs/drag-and-dropNot to be confused with Google Document AI, though the transcription was in fact better. This service does not offer table data extraction though.
ChatGPTTested at: https://chatgpt.com and via APII tried OpenAI's GPT 4 with Vision through both the API and ChatGPT. I found it can deliver very impressive handwriting to text conversion, but it also suffered from hallucination, and it could not reliably extract structured data. I also had problems with latency and timeouts when calling it through the API.
Claude AITested at https://claude.aiSimilar to GPT-4, I tried both Claude Sonnet and Opus. The results were ok but suffered from the same problems as GPT-4 - hallucination, and the unreliability of data extraction. Opus is really expensive, too. While the golden upvote was certainly simpler in theory, in practice, it missed the mark. It wasn’t as fun or expressive as legacy awards, and it was unclear how it benefited the recipient.
As part of the launch of the golden upvote, we also introduced the Contributor Program in the US. The program allows eligible users to earn cash for gold and eligible karma. (It’s worth noting that although there were understandable concerns about the Contributor Program leading to karma farming or other spam and fraud issues, we haven’t seen an increase in this behavior since the rollout 6 months ago). Unlike the golden upvote, interest in the program has grown… more on that in a second.
Finally, as part of this launch, we sunset coins. We gave those with a balance three months to spend their coins before we cleared balances and removed the monthly drip as a benefit of Reddit Premium.
Your feedback has been spot-on throughout the process; here’s what we learned:
To give an award, click the award icon underneath the content you’d like to recognize, select the award you want from a digestible set of fun options, and click Give Award. If you don’t have enough gold for the award, you can buy some on the same screen and give the award. Any redditor can view the awards you give in the awards leaderboard of a post or comment, unless the award is given anonymously.

We’re (re)introducing gold as the way to purchase awards on Reddit. Gold has meant a lot of things in Reddit history. It's referred to coins, Reddit Premium, and more. With the new version of Awards, gold both purchased and received will be stored as a balance on Reddit. Redditors can buy gold in bulk and spend down their balance to award content, or buy gold at the time of giving the award.
We’ve expanded the Contributor Program internationally. We’re expanding beyond the US. Eligible redditors in 35 countries can now earn cash for gold and karma earned through their contributions to the community. While we haven’t seen an increase in spam, fraud, or moderator burden to date, we’ll continue to monitor it as we scale the program to new countries.
We’re helping you keep your communities safe. If redditors notice potentially harmful awards on a post or comment, they can report it to you for removal if needed. We’re giving exclusive awards to coin holders. If you had a balance when we announced that coins were going away, you’ll have access to a number of exclusive awards to give for free when we launch this week. Our goal is to make Reddit a place where people who make quality posts and comments get real value for their contributions, and create incentives for better comments and posts to keep your communities healthy and vibrant.Your feedback has been spot-on throughout the process; here’s what we learned:
- Awards need to be expressive - Awards are a core part of the Reddit experience and should be expressive. If they’re too simple, they stop being fun.
- Awards given should visually support the recipient - The simplified golden upvote design wasn’t as fun or expressive as legacy awards, and it was unclear how it supported the recipient. (Several of you opted into the new golden upvote experience anyway, and your feedback helped us get here. We appreciate that.) Redditors love seeing other redditors get their kudos. It’s important to show the recognition contributors receive, and that their contribution matters.
- Awards given should convey real value to the recipient - The Contributor Program now gives redditors opportunity to get a cash payout as they receive awards on their content.
- But that value didn’t need to come at the cost of existing balances - While we had to sunset coins to implement this, we could’ve done better by our coin holders, i.e. some of the top awarders and award-recipients. Coin balances represented a commitment to rewarding comments and posts that delight fellow redditors. It was frustrating to see that disappear–even with the chance to spend down the balance.
- Eligibility to earn cash shouldn't incentivize spam and karma farming - This is an understandable concern. We have been monitoring the Contributor Program closely and haven’t seen spam, clickbait, and trolling that could attract engagement, arising from this program since the rollout six months ago.
What we’re doing about it
We’re launching a new and improved awards experience. We’re shouting from the rafters: Awards are back! Our goal with this refreshed experience is to bring back the fun of awards while minimizing in-feed clutter. The new experience features iconic expressions you’ll recognize in addition to new, uniquely Reddity ones. We’re also launching a leaderboard that shows the top awards for a post or comment.To give an award, click the award icon underneath the content you’d like to recognize, select the award you want from a digestible set of fun options, and click Give Award. If you don’t have enough gold for the award, you can buy some on the same screen and give the award. Any redditor can view the awards you give in the awards leaderboard of a post or comment, unless the award is given anonymously.

We’re (re)introducing gold as the way to purchase awards on Reddit. Gold has meant a lot of things in Reddit history. It's referred to coins, Reddit Premium, and more. With the new version of Awards, gold both purchased and received will be stored as a balance on Reddit. Redditors can buy gold in bulk and spend down their balance to award content, or buy gold at the time of giving the award.
We’ve expanded the Contributor Program internationally. We’re expanding beyond the US. Eligible redditors in 35 countries can now earn cash for gold and karma earned through their contributions to the community. While we haven’t seen an increase in spam, fraud, or moderator burden to date, we’ll continue to monitor it as we scale the program to new countries.
We’re helping you keep your communities safe. If redditors notice potentially harmful awards on a post or comment, they can report it to you for removal if needed. Safety is paramount to us for refreshed awards - so Pease don’t be shy (we know you won’t be) if there are other ways we can ensure safety for your communities as awards roll back out. NSFW subreddits, trauma and addiction support subreddits, and subreddits with mature content are not eligible for awards.
We’re giving exclusive awards to coin holders. If you had a balance when we announced that coins were going away, you’ll have access to a number of exclusive awards to give for free when we launch this week. No action required, those eligible will see a balance of these awards when awarding a post or comment starting May 15.

Yep! And those are all super groovy! My newsletter is primarily a place for me to compile a curated list of things happening all over town, not just in the downtown spaces. As part of the launch of the golden upvote, we also introduced the Contributor Program in the US. The program allows eligible users to earn cash for gold and eligible karma. (It’s worth noting that although there were understandable concerns about the Contributor Program leading to karma farming or other spam and fraud issues, we haven’t seen an increase in this behavior since the rollout 6 months ago). Unlike the golden upvote, interest in the program has grown… more on that in a second.
Finally, as part of this launch, we sunset coins. We gave those with a balance three months to spend their coins before we cleared balances and removed the monthly drip as a benefit of Reddit Premium.
