Today the White House announced tariffs on certain products imported from China, including steel and aluminum products, semiconductors, electric vehicles, batteries and battery components, solar cells, ship-to-shore cranes, syringes and needles, and certain personal protective equipment (or PPE). According to the White House, these higher tariffs are designed “to protect American workers and businesses from China’s unfair trade practices.” Tariffs are essentially taxes on imported goods, and altogether the tariff hikes cover about $18 billion in imported goods.
In 2018, Trump abruptly ended the economic era based on the idea that free trade benefited the global economy by putting tariffs of 25% on a wide range of foreign made goods. This was a cap to a set of ideas that had been sputtering for a while as industries moved to countries with cheaper labor, feeding the popular discontent Trump tapped into. Trump claimed that other countries would pay his tariffs, but tariffs are actually paid by Americans, not foreign countries, and his have cost Americans more than $230 billion. Half of that has come in under the Biden administration.
Trump’s tariffs also actually cost jobs, but they were very popular politically. A January 2024 National Bureau of Economic Research working paper by David Autor, Anne Beck, David Dorn, and Gordon H. Hanson established that the trade war of 2018–2019 hurt the U.S. heartland but actually helped Trump’s reelection campaign. “Residents of regions more exposed to import tariffs became less likely to identify as Democrats, more likely to vote to reelect Donald Trump in 2020, and more likely to elect Republicans to Congress,” they discovered.
Now Trump is saying, that if elected, he will impose a 10% tariff on everything imported into the United States, with a 60% tariff on anything from China and a 100% tariff on any cars made outside the U.S.
In contrast, the administration’s new tariffs are aimed only at China, and only at industries already growing in the U.S., especially semiconductors. Tariffs will rise to 50% on semiconductors and solar cells, 100% on electric vehicles, and 25% on batteries, a hike that will help the Big Three automakers who agreed to union demands in newly opened battery factories, as well as their United Auto Workers workforce. “I’m determined that the future of electric vehicles be made in America by union workers. Period,” Biden said.
The administration says the tariffs are a response to China’s unfair trade practices, and such tariffs are popular in the manufacturing belt of Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Democratic senators from that region have asked Biden to maintain or increase tariffs on Chinese imports after “[g]enerations of free trade agreements that prioritize multinational corporations have devasted our communities, harmed our economy, and crippled our job market.”
In other economic news, a new rule capping credit card late fees at $8, about a quarter of what they are now, was supposed to go into effect today, but on Friday a federal judge in Texas blocked the rule. The new cap was set by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), the brainchild of Massachusetts Democratic senator Elizabeth Warren, and was part of the Biden administration’s crackdown on “junk fees.”
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the American Bankers Association sued to stop the rule from taking effect, and U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman, appointed by Trump, issued a preliminary injunction against it. His reasoning draws from an argument advanced by the far-right Fifth Circuit, which oversees Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana, arguing that the CFPB itself is unconstitutional because of its funding structure. "Consequently, any regulations promulgated under that regime are likely unconstitutional as well," Pittman wrote.
On Friday, major airlines, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Hawaiian Airlines, and Alaska Airlines—but not Southwest Airlines—sued the U.S. Department of Transportation over its new rule that requires the airlines disclose their fees, such as for checking bags, upfront to consumers. The department says consumers are overpaying by $543 million a year in unexpected fees.
The airlines say that the rule will confuse consumers and that its “attempt to regulate private business operations in a thriving marketplace is beyond its authority.”
The other big story of the day is the continuing attempt of the MAGA Republicans to overturn our democratic system.
This morning, House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), second in line for the presidency and sworn to uphold the Constitution, left his post in Washington, D.C., to appear with former president Trump at his trial for falsifying business records to deceive voters before the 2016 election. The House was due to consider the final passage of the crucially important Federal Aviation Authority Reauthorization Act, but Johnson chose instead to show up to do the work the judge’s gag order means Trump cannot do himself, attacking key witness Michael Cohen, Trump’s former fixer. Johnson described Cohen as “clearly on a mission for personal revenge” and, citing his “history of perjury,” said that “[n]o one should believe a word he says in there.”
“I do have a lot of surrogates,” Trump boasted this morning, “and they are speaking very beautifully.” Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), who was also at the trial this morning, later said on Newsmax that they had indeed gone to “overcome this gag order.”
Johnson went on to call the trial “corrupt” and say “this ridiculous prosecution…is not about justice. It’s all about politics.” He left without taking questions. Meg Kinnard of the Associated Press called out the moment as “a remarkable moment in modern American politics: The House speaker turning his Republican Party against the federal and state legal systems that are foundational to the U.S. government and a cornerstone of democracy.”
Peter Eisler, Ned Parker, and Joseph Tanfani of Reuters explained today how those attacks on our judiciary are sparking widespread calls for violence against judges, with social media posters in echo chambers goading each other into ever more extreme statements. According to her lawyer, Stephanie Clifford, also known as Stormy Daniels, wore a bullet-proof vest as she came and went from court, an uncanny echo of the precautions necessary in mob trials.
In a different attack on our constitutional system, House Republicans are trying to replace the administration’s foreign policy with their own. Over the weekend, they introduced a bill to force President Biden to send offensive weapons to Israel for its invasion of Rafah, overruling the administration’s decision to withhold a shipment of 2,000-pound and 500-pound bombs after Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his government would invade Rafah despite strong opposition from the Biden administration.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters: “We strongly, strongly oppose attempts to constrain the president’s ability to deploy a U.S. security assistance consistent with U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives.”
The Constitution establishes that the executive branch manages foreign affairs, and until 2015 it was an established practice that politics stopped at the water’s edge, meaning that Congress quarreled with the administration at home but the two presented a united front in foreign affairs. That practice ended in March 2015, when 47 Republican senators, led by freshman Arkansas senator Tom Cotton, wrote a letter to Iran’s leaders warning that they would not honor any agreement Iran reached with the Obama administration over its development of nuclear weapons.
The Obama administration did end up negotiating the July 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with Iran and several world powers, under which Iran agreed to restrict its nuclear development and allow inspections in exchange for relief from economic sanctions. In 2018 the extremist Republicans got their way when Trump withdrew the U.S. from the deal, largely collapsing it, after which Iran resumed its expansion of the nuclear enrichment program it had stopped under the agreement.
Now extremists in the House are trying to run foreign policy on their own. The costs of that usurpation of power are clear in Niger, formerly a key U.S. ally in the counterterrorism effort in West Africa. The new prime minister of Niger, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, whose party took power after a coup d’état threw out Niger’s democratically elected president, defended his country’s turn away from the U.S. and toward Russia in an interview with Rachel Chason of the
Washington Post. Recalling the House’s six month delay in passing the national security supplemental bill, he said: “We have seen what the United States will do to defend its allies, because we have seen Ukraine and Israel.”

2024.05.15 17:35 KyronAWF Issues Reading a CSV
Good morning. I'm working on a project and am having issues reading a CSV on a file with more than 36,000 rows. When I run it normally:
``` df = pd.read_csv('File.csv', encoding='ISO-8859-1', dtype='str')
FYI, this is the only encoding to get anywhere. Plus, I downloaded this report from Salesforce, and I ensured the encodings match.
ParserError: Error tokenizing data. C error: EOF inside string starting at row 21276 ```
To test this, I run this cell:
``` import csv
file_path = 'File.csv'
with open(file_path, 'r', encoding='ISO-8859-1') as file: reader = csv.reader(file) for i, line in enumerate(reader): if i == 21275: # since Python is zero-indexed print(f'Line 21276: {line}') x = line print(x) print(len(x)) break ```
Here is the output (actual info replaced with placeholder).
Line 21276: ['FIRST LAST', 'Company', '12345', 'Place', 'Place', 'Place', '123456', '123456', '1_2_34', '', 'Location', '', 'Thing', 'None', '', '12.345', '0.000', 'Something', 'Status', '1/2/2034 12:00 AM', '3/45/6789', '', '', '', '', ''] 26
I've opened up the CSV file on Excel and the columns run from A to Z, so that's 26 columns. Everything lines up.
I've tried this and got a different issue: df = pd.read_csv('File.csv', encoding='ISO-8859-1', dtype='str', quoting=csv.QUOTE_NONE) ParserError: Error tokenizing data. C error: Expected 27 fields in line 535, saw 28
I diagnosed this similarly.
``` with open(file_path, 'r', encoding='ISO-8859-1') as file: for i, line in enumerate(file): if i == 534: # since Python is zero-indexed print(f'Line 535: {line}') x = line print(len(x.split(','))) break
Line 535: "FIRST LAST","Company","12345","Place","Place","Place","12345","12345","3_4_56","","Place","","Thing","None","","0000.000","0.000","Something","Word","2/34/5678 12:00 PM","","","","0000.00","",""
28 ```
It looks like adding the QUOTE_NONE progresses troubleshooting, but adds columns. I checked this row in Excel and verified there are only 26 columns.
Any help is appreciated. Thank you.
2024.05.15 17:34 kindness_is_queen Brompton as carry-on - it worked but meh
| First of all, it worked. Southwest airline from Denver to Austin. TSA knew it was a bike, but still let me through. Gate staffs asked what's inside, I said personal mobility device. Thoughts: I wouldnt do this again. Carrying a Brompton in a dimpa bag through the airport is heavier than I thought. I a 5 feet 7 women, who workout quite a bit so I'd assume my muscles would carry me through, but man oh man, the bike gets heavy after a while. In the future: I just bought a bike cover on AliXpress that allows you to still push the bike in cart mode. Will try that next time. Also bought a Samsonite Stryde 2 Large Glider so that I can check in my brompton next time when I travel internationally. submitted by kindness_is_queen to Brompton [link] [comments] |
2024.05.15 17:26 ya5ha5 Help!! How do I fix this file to make it 3D printable?
Few days back I got Bambu Lab P1S. Tomorrow is my sister-in-law's birthday and I really want to print her 2016 Ford Figo. Her parents sold her car recently as she's here in US and she's pretty sad about it as it was her first car and what not. I'm still a noobie at 3D modelling and I found someone on Fiverr. After initially promising it within 3 days it went on for 9 days and finally few hours back, I got the STL file.
It was created in blender and while his screenshots of stl file and img file he shared look good, when I slice it, I get weird artifacts.
Original file After Slicing This was after initial revision and the first version was even worse. The designer has done a very good job, but he doesn't know much about optimizing it for 3D printing which he disclosed just now!
How do I make it 3D printable assuming I can install any software that's out there. I need to start the print in 10 hours. Please help.
2024.05.15 17:18 HappyGoLacky Big Pots and Root Rots - Monstera Mythbusting
Apologies for posting a novella. I’ll probably get downvoted a lot for this post, but almost every every day I see one or more of these big pot comments in response to someones post. So here goes.
- Myth 1 - If the pot’s too big, the monstera will keep growing out it’s roots to fill the pot before it pushes out leaf growth.
- BUSTED: Monsteras growing in the wild have unlimited space to expand their roots. If this myth were true, wild monsteras would have miles of roots and no leaves. In reality, ALL plants, including monsteras, achieve a balance between root and top growth through a concept known as the "root-to-shoot ratio". Plants balance resources between their roots and shoots based on their needs and environmental conditions. When a plant's roots have enough space and access to nutrients, they will focus on establishing a suitable root system initially. However, once the roots are well-established and able to support the plant's needs, the plant will allocate more energy to producing leaves and stems. In a large pot, a monstera will initially invest in root growth to maximize nutrient and water absorption. Once the roots are sufficiently developed to support the plant, it will shift its energy towards top growth. This natural balance means that the plant can thrive by supporting its above-ground parts with a strong root system. Providing a larger pot will not prevent a monstera from growing leaves; it will merely allow the plant to establish a healthy foundation, ultimately leading to better overall growth and a more vigorous plant. On the other hand, the common advice to use a pot that is only a bit larger than the existing root ball can lead to the plant focusing more on leaf growth at the expense of developing a suitably sustainable root system. Even though this might result in quicker leaf production in the short term, it can leave the plant with an underdeveloped root system, making it less stable and less able to absorb nutrients and water effectively over time.
- Myth 2 - If the pot’s too big you’ll get root rot.
- BUSTED: This is the one I see most often, and although well meaning, doesn’t help people learn about setting up a proper environment for a monstera (or any plant). When growing the wild, in the ground, Monstera’s have an unlimited pot size, literally and they don't die of root rot except when something is wrong. Root rot is actually contributed to by a wide variety of conditions.
- Unsuitable Soil Mix: The job of the monstera grower is to create a root zone as close to its native habitat as possible. If the soil you use is too compact or heavy, or doesn’t drain well enough, it will create an environment suitable for pathogens to thrive. Monsteras are pretty hardy and can thrive in a wide variety of soils, which is why you see people using things like LECA and creating all kinds of soil mixes. Ultimately, it’s important that the roots have sufficient moisture combined with sufficient air and can gain sufficient nutrients from the soil (or anything you feed it). Proper drainage and aeration are crucial to prevent root rot. A well-aerated soil mix allows excess water to drain away, preventing waterlogging, which can suffocate roots and create conditions that encourage root rot. Using a soil mix designed for aroids or creating your own mix with ingredients like perlite, orchid bark, and peat moss can help achieve the right balance. If in doubt about the right soil to use, look for good quality commercial aroid mixes on amazon or wherever you buy your plant supplies.
- Overwatering: This is one of the most common mistakes made by plant owners. If the soil is kept too wet for too long, it starves the roots of oxygen. Monsteras, like other plants, require a balance between moisture and air in the soil. When the soil stays saturated, the roots can suffocate and begin to rot. Signs of overwatering include yellowing leaves, mushy stems, and a musty odor from the soil.
- Unsuitable Water: The quality of water you use can significantly impact the health of your monstera. Tap water, depending on your location, can contain high levels of chlorine, fluoride, or salts, which can be harmful to plants over time. To avoid this, consider using filtered, distilled, or reverse osmosis (RO) water to reduce the risk of chemical buildup. However, when using distilled or RO water, remember that these types of water lack minerals, so you may need to add supplemental nutrition more frequently. Collecting rainwater is another excellent option, as it is generally free of harmful (to plants) chemicals and more closely matches the water monsteras receive in their natural environment. If using tap water, let it sit out for 24 hours before watering to allow some of the chlorine to evaporate. Also, use room-temperature water to avoid shock to the plant’s roots. If you’re not sure about your tap water, your local extension or agriculture office will often do a sample analysis for you for free or cheaply.
- Poor Soil Microbiome: In its natural environment, soil has a diverse biome that includes a beneficial fungi and bacteria. These microorganisms play a a really important role in plant health by inoculating the roots against pathogens. Beneficial fungi, such as mycorrhizae, are symbiotic with plant roots, helping them absorb water and nutrients more efficiently. Beneficial bacteria, can produce antibiotics that suppress harmful pathogens like Pythium, Phytophthora, Fusarium, and Rhizoctonia, all of which can cause root rot and other diseases if they are not kept in check. These beneficial microorganisms create a competitive environment that makes it difficult for harmful pathogens to establish. So if we’re growing monsteras in pots, if we try to try to recreate the natural soil biome we can make root rot and other diseaases less common. You can buy products to do this, I use a liquid Mycorrhizae called Orca, by Plant Revolution, because it contains a broad range of both myco (Endomycorrhiza and Ectomycorrhiza) and good bacteria, so it’s an all in one soil biome booster. There are plenty of others on the market, but that’s the one I use. Additionally, nutrient additions can help adjust and support this environment in the pot. Using organic amendments, such as worm castings, seaweed extract, can provide nutrients that promote a healthy soil microbiome. Avoid using synthetic fertilizers too much, beause they disrupt the microorganisms, as can overly chlorinated water (it's addition to drinking water is literally to kill microorganisms). I also have a bag of granulated mycorrhizae (again there’s a ton of granulated myco out on the market), , that I mix in with the new soil when repotting a plant, I use this one because it’s relatively cheap, but even though it may not be the best, I’m ok with that because I supplement with Orca as a part of my nutrient regimen.
So the issue is much more involved than big pots. Healthy and appropriately sized roots are important to a well balanced monstera. There’s also a ton of other factors including, pot material, environment temperature, humidity, repotting stress, and so much more. I just wanted to address the “big pot” thing specifically. As I mentioned at the beginning, a monstera is pretty hardy as long as it’s treated well, but the more you know, the easier it is to make the right decisions for the plant. The good news is that everything I've addressed above, goes for pretty much all plants.
If you believe I've made any errors above, I'm happy to discuss or chat about it. Hope some of you find this helpful.
EDIT: edited for spelling.
2024.05.15 17:17 questionsypreguntas Is there a wide format printer that can print on paper and fabric?
I work at a University and print a lot of 48" x 36" research posters. Occasionally I'll get asked if we print on fabric, because people need to fly with their posters and don't want to have to pay to have their rolled up poster checked for a flight. A good option is fabric posters, since they can fold it and put it in their suitcase.
We're in the market to purchase a new wide format printer, and I'm wondering if there are options that print on paper and fabric, or do I need special inks that I would have to change out for the fabric or how that works. I'm obviously very ignorant, so I may just need a separate printer.
Also, if any of you do a lot of large format printing on fabric, is the process time consuming?
2024.05.15 17:12 No-Physics7479 Integrated Circuits (ICs) for Memory
Function Integrated circuits (ICs) specifically designed for memory function store data in binary format. This data can include programs, data, settings, and more. Memory ICs can be classified into two main types:
- Random Access Memory (RAM): RAM stores data that can be read, written, and erased. Data in RAM is lost when the power is turned off. RAM is used to store data that is currently being used by the computer, such as running programs and data that is being edited.
- Read-Only Memory (ROM): ROM stores data that can only be read, not written or erased. Data in ROM is written into the chip during manufacturing and cannot be changed afterward. ROM is used to store the computer's boot program, BIOS, and other data necessary for system operation.
Components Memory Cell The memory cell is the basic unit of memory in integrated circuits, responsible for storing information in the form of bits (0 or 1). Each memory cell is composed of the following main components:
- Transistor: Transistors are semiconductor components that play a key role in storing and reading data. Two common types of transistors used in memory cells are MOSFETs and bipolar junction transistors (BJTs).
- Storage Structure: The storage structure is where the bit value (0 or 1) is stored. The most common storage structure is the bistable structure, which uses two stable states of the transistor to represent the two bit values.
- Access Circuit: The access circuit provides the ability to read and write data to the memory cell. The access circuit includes transistors and logic circuits to decode addresses, select the memory cell, and control data read/write operations.
Operation of Memory Cells The operation of a memory cell depends on the type of storage structure used. Here is a description of how a bistable memory cell using MOSFETs operates:
Storing Data: - To store a 1 bit, a voltage is applied to the gate of the first MOSFET transistor, causing it to conduct and create a current flow through the transistor. This current changes the voltage on the capacitor, creating a stable state that stores the 1 bit.
- To store a 0 bit, no voltage is applied to the gate of the first MOSFET transistor, causing it not to conduct and no current to flow through the transistor. The voltage on the capacitor maintains the current state, storing the 0 bit.
Reading Data: - To read data, a voltage is applied to the gate of the second MOSFET transistor. This transistor conducts and allows current to flow, depending on the voltage on the capacitor.
- If the capacitor is charged (storing a 1 bit), the current will flow through the second MOSFET transistor, generating a voltage at the output that represents a 1 bit.
- If the capacitor is not charged (storing a 0 bit), no current flows through the second MOSFET transistor, and the voltage at the output represents a 0 bit.
Writing Data: - To write data, a voltage is applied to both gates of the MOSFET transistors. This voltage changes the voltage on the capacitor, overwriting the new bit value into the memory cell.
Significance and Purpose of Memory Cells Memory cells play a crucial role in integrated circuits, enabling the storage of information essential for circuit operation. Common types of memory that utilize memory cells include:
- Random Access Memory (RAM): RAM stores temporary data that can be read and written multiple times. RAM is used to store data that is currently being processed by the CPU or other parts of the computer.
- Read-Only Memory (ROM): ROM stores fixed data that can only be read. ROM is used to store the computer's boot program, BIOS, and other data that does not need to be changed.
- Flash Memory: Flash memory is a non-volatile type of memory that can be read, written, and erased multiple times. Flash memory is used in flash drives, memory cards, and other portable storage devices.
In addition, memory cells are also used in applications such as:
- Digital Signal Processors (DSPs): DSPs use memory cells to store data and filters required for signal processing.
- Microcontrollers: Microcontrollers use memory cells to store programs and data necessary for controlling peripheral devices.
In summary, memory cells are essential components of integrated circuits, playing a vital role in storing information and supporting the operation of various electronic devices.
Address Decoder Circuit Function An address decoder circuit is a crucial component in integrated circuits (ICs) responsible for converting binary code into control signals to activate the corresponding functional blocks within the IC. With the help of an address decoder circuit, ICs can perform complex functions such as accessing memory, performing calculations, communicating with peripheral devices, and much more.
Components and Operation of Each Component - Comparator Array:
- Consists of logic comparators that compare each bit of the input binary code with the address values stored pre-programmed inside the IC.
- Each comparator has two inputs:
- Data input: Receives the corresponding bit from the input binary code.
- Address input: Receives the corresponding address value stored pre-programmed in the IC.
- The comparator output is high if the two input values match and low if they do not match.
- Logic Circuit:
- Combines the comparison results from the comparators to generate control signals for the functional blocks.
- Utilizes logic gates like AND, OR, NOT to process the comparison results and generate the appropriate control signals.
- For example, if the input binary code indicates a specific memory location, the logic circuit generates a control signal to activate the transistors that access that memory location.
- Buffer:
- Amplifies and stabilizes the control signals before sending them to the functional blocks.
- Ensures that the functional blocks receive clear and accurate signals for precise operation.
- Minimizes noise and ensures system reliability.
Overall Operation - The address decoder circuit receives an input binary code.
- Each bit of the input binary code is compared to the corresponding address value in the comparator array.
- The comparison results from the comparators are fed into the logic circuit for processing.
- The logic circuit combines the comparison results and generates the appropriate control signals for the functional blocks.
- The buffer amplifies and stabilizes the control signals before sending them to the functional blocks.
- The functional blocks receive the control signals and perform their corresponding functions.
Significance and Purpose Address decoder circuits play a critical role in controlling the operation of integrated circuits. Because of them, ICs can perform numerous complex functions accurately and efficiently. Some specific applications of address decoder circuits include:
- Memory: Selecting a specific memory location for access.
- Processor: Selecting the instruction code to execute.
- Peripheral Controller: Selecting the peripheral device to communicate with.
- Decoder Circuit: Converting binary code into analog signals.
How it works: An address decoder circuit works by receiving an input binary code and converting it into control signals for the corresponding functional blocks within the IC. The input binary code can represent a memory address, a register location, or any other information needed to identify the functional block that needs to be activated.
Significance and Purpose: Address decoder circuits play a vital role in controlling the operation of integrated circuits. With the help of address decoder circuits, ICs can perform complex functions like memory access, calculations, peripheral device communication, and much more.
Buffers in Integrated Circuits (ICs) Concept A buffer is an electronic circuit that amplifies an input signal without altering its waveform or amplitude. In other words, a buffer strengthens a weak signal so that it can be used by other circuits, while also isolating the signal from noise and loads.
Structure Buffers are typically constructed using transistors arranged in a voltage or current amplification configuration. These transistors are connected together in a specific structure to create the function of amplifying the input signal.
Operation Buffers operate based on the principle of amplifying the input signal. The input signal is applied to a first transistor, and then amplified through subsequent transistors until it reaches the desired voltage or current level. This amplification process occurs without changing the waveform or amplitude of the input signal.
Classification Based on their primary function, buffers are classified into two types:
- Voltage Buffer: Amplifies the voltage of the input signal.
- Current Buffer: Amplifies the current of the input signal.
Applications Buffers are widely used in electronic circuits, especially in integrated circuits (ICs). Some common applications include:
- Signal Isolation: Helps protect signals from noise and loads.
- Signal Strengthening: Enables weak signals to be used by other circuits.
- Impedance Conversion: Matches the impedance of the signal to the impedance of the other circuit.
- Interconnecting Different Circuits: Connects circuits with different voltage or current levels.
Examples - Operational Amplifier (Op-amp): A common type of buffer, amplifies voltage signals, inverts signals, compares voltages, and performs basic mathematical operations.
- Bus Buffer: Amplifies signals on the data bus, ensuring accurate, undistorted signal transmission.
- Output Buffer: Amplifies the output signal of an IC, providing enough current to drive the load.
Advantages - Increases signal strength.
- Isolates signals from noise and loads.
- Converts impedance.
- Connects different circuits.
- Protects signals.
Disadvantages - Introduces signal delay.
- Increases power consumption.
- May alter signal distortion.
Read/Write Control Circuit in Integrated Circuits (ICs) Detailed Structure - Address Decoder:
- Decoder Type:
- Combined Address Decoder (CCD): Utilizes logic gates to decode the binary address into control signals for rows and columns in memory or registers. Advantages: simple, saves chip area. Disadvantages: slower decoding speed.
- Hierarchical Address Decoder: Employs multiple small decoders arranged in a hierarchical manner to decode the binary address. Advantages: faster decoding speed. Disadvantages: more complex, consumes more chip area.
- Decoder Size: Depends on the memory capacity or the number of registers to be accessed. For instance, a 256-byte memory requires an 8-bit address decoder, while a 64KB memory needs a 16-bit address decoder.
- Chip Select:
- Logic Gates: Uses AND and OR gates to combine control signals from the CPU, DMA, interrupts, and other sources.
- Control Signals:
- Chip Select (CS): Enables or disables internal IC circuits upon receiving a high signal.
- Read Enable (RDEN): Allows data reading from the IC.
- Write Enable (WREN): Allows data writing to the IC.
- Read/Write Controller:
- Logic Circuit: Employs flip-flops, logic gates, and a finite state machine to generate read (RD) and write (WR) control signals.
- Access Mode:
- Synchronous: Data is transferred into or out of the IC along with the clock pulse.
- Asynchronous: Data is transferred into or out of the IC without a clock pulse.
- Single Cycle: Data access completes within one clock cycle.
- Multi-Cycle: Data access requires multiple clock cycles to finish.
- Data Buffer:
- Type:
- Register: Stores data as voltage signals on transistors.
- Flip-Flop: Stores data as the state of a latch.
- Capacity: Depends on the data bus size and the number of bytes to be temporarily stored.
Detailed Operation - Access Request:
- The CPU or external device sends an access address and control signals to the system bus.
- The access address identifies the specific location in memory or a register to be accessed.
- The control signals indicate the access type (read or write) and access timing.
- Address Decoding:
- The address decoder receives the access address and decodes it into row and column signals to determine the specific location in memory or a register.
- Chip Select:
- The chip select checks the control signals to determine if the access request is intended for the IC or an external device.
- If the request is valid, the "chip select" signal is asserted to activate the internal IC circuits.
- Access Validation:
- Other control signals (like RDEN and WREN) are checked to ensure access is allowed.
- Read/Write Control:
- The read/write controller generates RD and WR signals to control data read or write operations.
- It determines the timing and method of data access based on the memory or register access protocol.
- Data Access:
- Data is read from or written to the memory or register at the location identified by the address decoder.
- Data Buffer:
- The data buffer temporarily stores data during access to reduce noise and ensure data integrity.
- Data Transfer:
- Data is transferred from the data buffer to the system data bus for the CPU or external device to read or write.
Advanced Example of Read/Write Control Circuit Operation in an IC - Reading Data from Memory:
- The CPU sends memory address 0x1234 and a read signal (RD) to the system bus.
- The address decoder of the memory IC decodes address 0x1234 into row select 4 and column select 12.
- The chip select checks the "chip select" signal and other control signals to ensure valid access.
- The read/write controller generates an RD signal to activate the read operation.
- Data from the memory cell identified by address 0x1234 is read and stored in the data buffer.
- Data is transferred from the data buffer to the system data bus.
- The CPU receives the data from the data bus.
2. Writing Data to a Register: · The microcontroller sends register address 0xABC and a write signal (WR) along with data 0x5F to the system bus.
· The address decoder of the microcontroller IC decodes address 0xABC into the specific register select signal.
· The chip select checks the "chip select" signal and other control signals to ensure valid access.
· The read/write controller generates a WR signal and transmits data 0x5F to the selected register.
2024.05.15 17:11 Money-Own Ducts too big for inverter system?
I've had 6 companies come out to estimate replacing my current AC only with a heat pump. I was so close to deciding between the Mitsubishi svz/suz and the Daikin dz6vs when today's contractor indicated he did not recommend an inverter ducted mini split because main truck was too large and didn't step down in size enough. Was concerned that when running at the lower end of the compressor speed the heat would dump out either in the basement or at the registers and then suck.right back into the return.
He even wouldn't recommend a 2 stage because my system is perfect for a 2.5 ton and the trane only offers a 2 or 3 ton and at 3 tons it would never trigger the 2nd stage effectively making it a 1 stage.
Contractor said "I would love to sell you the newer inverter technology but that I wouldn't be happy with the results."
Thoughts on this? This system covers about 2000 sqft (main level and basement). Built in late 1970s. No other weatherization that I know of has been done.
2024.05.15 17:07 gnassar Puppy breathing staggered - potential intestinal blockage?
- Species: Dog
- Age: 1.5yrs
- Sex/Neuter status: Male/Neutered
- Breed: Pomsky
- Body weight: 18-20lbs
- History: Drama queen (according to vet because of his cone paralysis :P)
- Clinical signs: Staggered breathing (or breathing in stages?)
- Duration: 1 day
- Your general location: Alberta, Canada
- Name: Watson
Hello there,
There is some backstory to this that I couldn't figure out how to include in the title, please bear with me:
About 4 days ago we realized Watson was breathing very rapidly at rest. We live in a very cold place, it had just started warming up, and his coat is the longest it's ever been, so we assumed that he was just too hot (23-26 Celsius in some rooms of the house) and booked an appointment with the groomer to get him a trim.
He was still eating and drinking normally, urinating normally, gums were pink, I think he might have been having less bowel movements but I'm unsure because we brought him over to my girlfriend's parents for the better part of the two days after noticing this (and he roams their large backyard with their two dogs), so he might have had many or 0 bowel movements over there, I also felt his stomach and it felt normal. His behavior this whole time was mostly normal (maybe a little bit subdued, but I assumed it was because he was tired from hanging out with his uncles so much). For the sake of the timeline, this is all that happened the first 2 of 4 days (day 4 being today).
Yesterday around 5am he woke us up because he was trying to throw up. He heaved a few times, and nothing ended up coming up other than white foam. He seemed to recover quickly from this, and we went back to bed. I told my girlfriend that if he was still exhibiting any weird symptoms in the morning I would take him to the vet.
Woke up later that morning, and he seemed back to normal. His breathing had slowed down to a normal rate, he ate his breakfast, I took him on a walk in the morning and he was behaving totally normal. He also passed a "good" stool (firm, solid normal color) on our walk. We got home and I went to pick up old his stools from our yard (routine after a walk) when I noticed an unusual one (that had to have been within the last 24h, exactly when I'm not sure as we let him out often while we are getting ready for work/bed/otherwise unable to watch him).
The stool I found had a bunch of tape coiled up inside of it, which I remembered had been a loose strand of tape that was sitting on my desk that he must have pulled off and eaten (uncoiled, the kind of tape where you have to peel the bottom off to expose the sticky side). We hadn't had an issue with him eating things that aren't food in a long time so I let my guard down.
It all started making sense, I thought that he must have been in pain/discomfort from eating the tape which explained the heavy breathing for the couple of days until he passed it in his stool. Since he was mostly back to normal I thought nothing of it.
Starting last night and continuing to this morning I noticed that his breathing, although much slower and normal rate-wise, has changed to be a much deeper, staggered breathing. I don't know how to describe this other than staggered, maybe staged? He will inhale about 60% of the breath initially, then 30% more, then the last 10%. His mouth is closed while he's doing this (sleeping/resting the times that I have noticed it). Google has been woefully unhelpful in looking this up (probably because I have no idea what the kind of breathing is actually called)).
At this point I'm concerned that there is still some tape stuck in his guts somewhere. The piece that he ate was quite long, and I didn't extract/unravel it from inside his stool to see how much of it had come out there, but nor could I find any remnants of un-eaten tape anywhere. Is this kind of seemingly labored breathing characteristic of a blockage, and should I be concerned?
I'm hesitant to go to the vet right away because
A. I've taken Watson there probably 10 times for minor issues, every time I have they do the exact same checks that I mentioned above (feel his stomach, check gums, behaviour, eating and bowel regularity) and then send us off almost with an air of like "you guys need to relax he will be fine"
B. With the above in mind, it isn't exactly cheap
Reasons I think he does not have a blockage: -His most recent stool was a good one -His eating habits are the same -His behavior is normal
Reasons I think he might still have a blockage: -His breathing?? Not sure if this is indicative of anything because as I mentioned, google no help this -The timeline of his dry-heaving in the morning doesn't add up for me. I don't know for sure, but I'm pretty positive that the stool with the tape in it happened the night before the dry-heaving, so why would he dry-heave if the blockage had already been excreted. He has not tried to throw up, or anything similar since. -He has always coughed more than your average dog (he loves eating quickly and then chasing that down with big gulps of water), but he has been coughing a bit "deeper" this last day or so? This could be me worrying, but thought I would mention
Looking for advice on what to do, and if these symptoms are indicative of anything or if I'm just being my normal hypochondriac self :/
Thank you for your time.
