2024.05.15 08:49 casefilesofVJ The Love Tunnel

-Jack
Every kid growing up in Gympie in the early 90- 2000s knew about the Love Tunnel.
The love tunnel was located over the hill from the skatepark on the Riverbank. It was a massive storm water drain filled with spray paint and lore unbound throughout the generations; the glowing dick, whose name is the furthest in, the people who live inside, the bull shark that lived under the bridge just outside, all that fun stuff.
It collapsed in the late 2000’s in a flood and was eventually rebuilt, but it was all fancy, modern, safe and not the same. Back in the day it had decades of graffiti, crumbling cement, jagged metal pole framing bent and jutting out from the sides. You know, real character.
I remember when I was just a kid at the skatepark and I spotted a bunch of other kids at the metal grating of a drain. I joined them and gazed down a few metres to some older teenagers, they had trekked through this “love tunnel” under the massive hill all this way. Badass I thought. LEGENDARY.
I talked about it at school, about this mysterious “love tunnel”. It was in view from the road when I crossed the bridge everyday on my daily commutes from the backseat of mums car.
I would gaze down at the weir and see the top of the love tunnel, sliightly hidden from view by a hill. It fascinated me.
I learned all these mysterious tales; this person slept with this person there, someone took a dump at the entrance and some other girl stood in it and now she had a nickname, someone found needles, another found a homeless woman and she screamed at them. I was pumped for the next weekend. I was going to go see it for myself.
I saw too much.
Early Saturday morning I was riding my push bike through town and toward destination adventure! I started out at the skatepark, met up with a few of the regulars, a mix of 5-19y/o everyone on the half pipes and ramps had a code of comrady that I've never found in a public place anywhere else and you always had someone to hang with.
My usual crew slowly arrived through the morning, a bunch of other 10/11 year old misfits like myself and we headed on our first place on our journey, Hungry Jacks. Now we never technically stole, we found a loophole…
One or two would order a stunner meal, then we'd take privilege of the free refills and fill up the empty plastic 4L juice jugs that we all had prepped in our backpacks. Coke and red Fanta for days.
So we got our supplies and headed behind HJ, past the volleyball courts and headed down a bush track down to the river.
We walked along the banks to loop back down to where the bridge was, we passed a few teenagers fishing and a couple other groups of kids swinging from rope swings into the water or huddled in groups smoking things they shouldn't.
We eventually arrived at the weir and the stormwater drain that I had been so intrigued by. The Love Tunnel.
Climbing up the hill and seeing it up close when you were just a tiny human. It was like staring into the dark abyss of hell.
There was a small stream of water flowing out of the big grey cylinder and it was covered in multicolored quotes and crude pictures that was very eye opening at the time.
Our voices echoed as one by one we climbed up the grassy, eroding clay edging that was the makeshift path into the mouth that probably changed each time it rained. Each of us had pulled out clumps of grass that we thought were handholds. If you fell, you fell down an embankment of slippery jagged rocks poking out from the fast flowing river.
So were inside and began to walk a couple of metres in then around us the light abruptly disappeared into complete darkness. And I remember the way the sounds traveled you could feel it through your chest it was mesmerizing.
I remember bravely stepping into the darkness and taking five or six steps in. That thick darkness was something else, I ran myself back to that entrance and light, heart pounding from the adrenaline.
This turned into a game of who could go in the furthest. This stopped when one of the boys screamed out from the darkness in pain.
He was back in the light teary eyed a few moments later wet on one side and feigning a laugh. He'd slipped down and cut open his knee, it was hilarious. We teased him saying he was going to get gangrene and leprosy and a myriad of other ailments we had no idea actually was.
We decided to bail, we forgot torches, we didn't plan that part out too well, and enjoyed the rest of the afternoon being little menaces.
We met the next day with a game plan, we had an array of various sized torches, from small ones that didn't do anything, one of those giant rectangle ones that was our main light source, a couple of handheld ones, one which flickered and the other stopped working before we even got into the tunnel.
We got in safely and tested out our torches and began walking into the unknown. It was pretty much the same as before, but there were strange things, old makeshift bongs, shopping bags, random shoes, a shopping trolley, a mattress that was all moldy and rotted. I still to this day do not understand how people managed to get that shit in there.
We passed a section where someone had thrown a can of red paint all over the walls, the amount of those ‘S’ symbols was more terrifying.
We saw light up ahead, we were passing our first grate. It was kind of daunting looking up towards it. Even getting on each other's shoulders we couldn't reach. There was an array of broken beer bottles and glass was everywhere, under the grate was a dead snake amongst some debris.
We had a debate whether to go further, we ended up going on at least until the next grate, we came to a fork, one seemed like a smaller offshoot so we stuck to the bigger side.
There were more offshoots and we came to a part where the big pipes split off into three under another grate. We gazed up hoping to get an identifier of our location, but all we could see was blue. We called out to see if we could get anyone's attention.
“Cooooweeee” we shouted in unison, the sound echoing in all directions.
We were laughing and having a grand time until something shouted back, something that still shakes me to my core to this day.
Some yobbo crackhead chick in her fifties with this ratty pink tank top that was all stretched half showing her saggy titties. “What the fuck you think you little cunts doing down here.” This chick screeched at us through her few teeth or something along the lines of that. She just exploded at us with a barrage of threats.
We were shocked silenced moving together to make one mass.
One of the boys screamed when a skinny guy emerged from the darkness. He was covered in tattoos with scraggly hair and a beard, he was all crazy eyed and pantless.
Someone yelled out to run and it was all the motivation we needed.
We could hear them screaming and the guy ran after us, we heard glass shattering behind us, they must have thrown a bottle. We were legging it.
We got split up in our running, I fell down, tripping over some rubbish, one mate stayed back to help me, this left us without a torch. We came across the same kid who slipped over yesterday, he had slipped down again cutting open his other knee. He wore those with badges of honor at school, but he was blubbering like a baby at this point.
He had the flickering torch and it disoriented us more than helped, as it turned on and off every time he took a step. I thought we were lost but we found the other grate, then eventually the entrance.
The others were already climbed down, we were soon by their side panting in the grass and wiping away our tears so the others couldn't see.
We ran back over to the skatepark and immediately told every kid we saw.
That was the wildest shit we had ever experienced. Sure we’d seen crazy up on the street but to have it jump out at you from the shadows in a storm water drain was next level.
By that night one of the other boys had spilled to his parents about our escapades and a couple of other mums got phone calls, three got in trouble, two of us didn't, including me.
I never stepped foot back in that tunnel, I swam at the weir more times than I could count afterwards though and never encountered anyone else too sketchy.
I think only a year or two later I saw on the news people dying in storm water drains somewhere else in Aus, we never realized how dangerous they could be back then. Lol.
Every party or get together afterwards it was a crowd favorite to bring up. It was a good conversation starter and joined the tales amongst my friends of the weird shit that happens in ‘Helltown’.
Growing up and looking back they were probably just homeless drug addicts freaked out from a bunch of children's voices yelling out coooweee from the underground where they thought they were alone. That would have scared the shit outta me if I was them.
Good times.

2024.05.15 08:46 Sariius Deck strategy seems impossible - Obeka Brute Chronologist

Hey guys,
I recently started to build [Obeka, Brute Chronologist] since I find her ability very appealing. My general strategy idea is to cheat out big value creatures and keep them. I decided to not lean into copy my opponents cards, discard or infinite turns.
I am aiming for a good time with the deck, since having big creatures is fun and utilizing their effects for nearly no costs as well.
I got inspiration from EDHREC and available lists on archidekt for my build. So no fancy new strategy, I am relying onto well known cards.
My problem ist that despite the lost and all the cards seem synergistic to me - the deck nearly never does what I want and if it does so, it is not able to put an adequate amount of pressure into the table. I am goldfishing a lot and I start to be frustrated. My list is currently 106 cards since I wanted to decide what to cut while playtesting.
Here is my list:
https://www.archidekt.com/decks/7640795/draft_oh_beka
I also tested existing lists and it feels equivalent to me… so even the most viewed lists seem very inconsistent.
I am open for all suggestions and questions. I really want to make her work ! But it seems like quite a challenge 😇
Thank you guys - let the hive mind brew✌️

2024.05.15 08:41 WoldonFoot Certain Things Were Said: A TWBTW Campaign (Parts I-IV) (In Verse!)

After sixty-seven sessions of Curse of Strahd (read all about it here), it was time for a change. So into the wild we went...
My group is nearing the end of Hither, and along the way I've written summaries of each session ("What Just Happened?"), along with interesting/funny quotes from PCs/NPCs ("Certain Things Were Said"), and a list of new characters introduced that session ("Dramatis Personae").
My intention is to write the summaries for each of the five parts of the campaign in a different format. For the Witchlight Carnival, each summary was presented in verse (my own, no machine learning shortcuts!), using the the metre and rhyming structure of various Lewis Carrol poems.
I'd like to share my summaries/poems with you all here, for posterity, and in the hope you'll find them entertaining.
For reference, the players are:
NOTE: Lewis Carroll was known to hide secret messages in his poems. I've done the same, revealing the campaign's big twist in one of the poems below. None of my players have picked up on it.

Part I: Welcome to the Witchlight

What Just Happened? (in the style of Jabberwocky)
’Twas twilight when the carnival Did open wide two golden gates, And those with tickets did arrive, Seeking things they had misplaced.
One harengon of curious size, A kobold with a slithy gait, An owlet who possessed two eyes As wide as Annam’s dinner plates.
Yet are we three or are we four? Let’s add vibrations rarefied: A Witchlight hand here to ensure That every guest is Satyrs-fied!
Enter now and taste the sounds, Feel these colours, smell those sights! Kaleidoscopic fun abounds This synaesthesiac’s delight!
Yet where’s the drama? Where’s the tension? Certainly we’ve had a switch (At least in here there is no mention Of that cad von Zarovich).
Instead let’s race a giant snail, Eat candied mushrooms by the pound, Or listen to a gnome assail The tightness of your mother’s gown.
Yet hark! A misadventure glum! Those not heroes please give berth! The best laid plans of love undone By Tasha’s wild unruly mirth
These mirrored halls! This desperate task, To find a luckless paramour A sweet-toothed lass with porcine mask That you could swear you’ve seen before…
’Twas twilight when the carnival Did open wide two golden gates And those with tickets did arrive, Now guided by the wiles of fate.
Dramatis Personae
Arix Specklefoot, a sweet-toothed owlin Holafina, a curiously short harengon Skerrek Tirael, a slithy kobold Sylenos, a cosmic satyr Nicholas Midnight, elderly goblin ticketmaster at the Witchlight Carnival Candlefoot, a mime and not by choice Rubin Sugarwood, a lovesick halfling Ween Sundapple, his laugh-sick paramour Glorange Turple, a poetry gnome
Certain Things Were Said
“I am worried about your ability to sense vibrations that I cannot.” - Skerrek Tirael
“Tymore, goddess of good fortune! Look well upon Shellymoo this day!” - Holafina
“Hate to say it, man, but that gnome really insulted your mother.” - Sylenos
“Snacks?” - Arix Specklefoot

Part II: Lost and Found

What Just Happened? (In the style of The Walrus and the Carpenter )
"The time has come," the Satyr said, "To talk of many things: Of poems—and props—and Jeremy Plum— Of crowns and pixie kings— And why things here keep getting lost— And what this pig-girl means."
"But wait a bit," the Owlin cried, "Before our minds do meet, For some of us are pretty spooked, And I would like a treat!" "No hurry!" said the Satyr, And kicked up cloven feet.
The Owlin and the Kobold Were walking close at hand, They smiled like anything to see The gates of Pixie Land. "If we could only stay a while,” They said, "it would be grand!"
The Satyr sighed so sulkily, Because he thought that Plum Had got no business to be there When all was said and done. (“It's rude of him," the Kobold said, "To try and spoil our fun!")
"Oi, Satyr," said the pixie king, "You've had a pleasant run! Should you be getting back to work?” But answer came there none And this was scarcely odd, because He had real beef with Plum.
Now Arix made a hamster friend Who offered up some clues. The others tried the riding-pug: A pleasant thing to do! (“The pug is fine," the Rabbit said, "But he’s no Shellymoo.”)
"How nice of you to come!” said Plum, "You all are oh-so kind!" Puddlemud said nothing as His teeth began to grind. The Owlin and the Kobold cheered: “That was our FAVORITE ride!”
“A wooden crown," fair Jexim said, Is what we need to come Our way along with golden paint For some un-princely sum.” The others stared, confused, and said: “Now where did YOU come from?”
‘Twas then the party dared approach The famous Mystery Mine Where psychedelic spectacles Broke the Satyr’s mind. (“I really wish,” Zephixo sighed, “You wouldn’t ride while high”).
Next Dirla pulled all kind of things Out of his wagon/portal: Bottles, bunnies, candlesticks, A shining blade of vorpal (Incidentally, there’s a word That kind of rhymes with purple).
“If you put your mind to it And searched for long enough, Do you suppose," the party said, "That you could find our stuff?" "I doubt it," said dear Dirlagraun, And gave a bitter huff.
Then he gave the Harengon The greatest gift by far: A copy of “Gnome On The Run” And bid them au revoir (Morgie would have laughed at that While struggling with slash “R”).
“I do believe,” the Satyr said, “That something is not right, And think we ought to pay a call To Messers Witch and Light.” “I think we ought,” the Owlin said “To first stop for a bite.”
But in their way old Thaco stood, A clown grown grim and surly: “Rabbit! Owlin! Pixie! Skink! You aren’t allowed to be-“ The Fairy interrupted him: “Wait, WHAT did you call me?”
Poor Thaco cried: “Things move too fast! And have since my debut In R-1: To the Aid of Falx From Nineteen Eighty Two! And if you’d seen what I have seen Then you’d smoke bubbles, too!”
Finally he stepped aside, At last the way was clear. The Satyr ambled stealthily With open eyes and ears And pressed them to a wagon large To see what he could hear.
"The time has come," Witch and Light said, "To talk of things galore Of prizes—plans—and kenku pests— and ever so much more— But first we’d better ask inside Those spying at our door!”
Dramatis Personae
Jexim, a puzzled, puzzling fairy Jeremy Plum, operator of the Pixie Kingdom and bestower of silly names Biscuit, a talkative hamster Pinecone, a riding-pug Zephixo, dwarven inventor and mastermind behind the Mystery Mine Ernest Wilde, middle-aged calliope master currently inhabiting the body of his pet monkey Marigold, his button-collecting goblin assistant Dirlagraun, a kindly but inefficient displacer beast, minder of lost children and property Thaco, a bubble-smoking clown who is long past his prime
Certain Things Were Said
"Worried I was, with talk of missing supper." - Arix Specklefoot
"Could you not just purchase a new pair?" - Skerrek Tirael "Not like this, man." - Sylenos
"If you'd see the things I've seen, you'd smoke a bubble pipe, too." - Thaco
"Is this it?" - Dirlagraun "NO." - Everyone

Part III: On the Trail of the Kenku

What Just Happened? (In the style of The Hunting of the Snark)
"Where the heck is our stuff? We just want to know This Harengon ain't getting bigger, Arix has no idea of where to go And lies send poor Skerrek a-quiver!"
"Would you get back to work?" Mister Light cried, Twirling his cane with a smile, "Otherwise find where this kenku pest hides; She's cramping this carnival's style!"
"Well, that was a bust," said our heroes, conferring, "Anyone got a suggestion? If we need to pull strings to get back our things Then there are some folk we should question."
"Time's an illusion, free will a delusion!" Sylenos' mentor decreed, "Get a contusion battling occlusions, Or relax and have some of this…wait, what was I saying?"
Sylenos proclaimed: "A genius flawed!" "A man/dragon ahead of his time." Skerrek looked at his claws; Holafina at paws, And the other two just rolled their eyes
"A centuar I'm not! I just made a bad trade The "Cloppinton's" just serendipitous, Now lend me your aid and you'll maybe persuade These horsies to drop some significance."
Then they took to the skies on a dragonfly ride (Holafina and Skerrek abreast), When you're this high there's just nowhere to hide (And to which Sylenos attests)
Now Skerrek honed on a runaway gnome Who was fleeing the carnage with glee, Holafina struck home and that's it for this poem For the gnome was the kenku, you see.
Dramatis Personae
Mister Witch, a matter-of-fact elf, devoid of pretense Mister Light, a flamboyant elf, luminous and coy Burly, a philosophical, pumpkin-helmeted bugbear Mandragon, a seeker of truth (and not much else) Diana Cloppington, a centaur who is apparently not, operator of the Carousel Northwind, a very forthcoming treant, operator of the Dragonfly Rides
Certain Things Were Said
"There’s something weird going on. For some reason everyone thinks I don’t do anything around the carnival." - Sylenos
"It's true, Miss Cloppinton! We've ALL lost things." - Arix Specklefoot
"Wait, when did we have biscuits?" - Jexim

Part IV: Through the Looking Glass

What Just Happened? (In the style of A Boat Beneath a Sunny Sky)
Now hear the Kenku’s strange reply (As Arix struggles to apply Triage to these pixie guys)
Asking questions, getting nought Set her on a different course: High sabotage without remorse!
And what has got her so irate Is what’s she trying to intimate: Zybilna has been quiet of late!
Ignore the rest, and let’s take flight To confront dear Witch and Light (Surprisingly, they’re quite contrite)
To keep the carnival in motion A tapestry of lies was woven: A deal with the Hourglass Coven!
Who take from those who can’t afford Entrance through the Witchlight’s doors Miscellanea adored
So THAT’s who taken all your junk! Time to find these Hourglass punks! Which way to this Feywild dump?
But first we’ll make a brief aside So Candlefoot can vocalise His mermaid love (now legalised)
Now the pair can tie the knot And while we’re passing time why not Ride the fabled Bubble Pot?
Yet ere you all are translocated (Everybody’s breath now bated) Arix must be coronated!
The time of truth has come at last Hesitation as you pass Though the hallowed looking glass
Are you afraid to lose your minds? What lies ahead? What lies behind? What do you expect to find?
Will Skerrek ever fabricate? Or Holafina emulate A bunny’s median height and weight?
Shall Jexim’s memoirs find acclaim? Can Monty locate Bobbitt Fane? (…hang on, that’s a different game)
Does Arix ever find the door? And will Sylennos flee the cause To study unemployment law?
Dramatis Personae
Kettlesteam, a mischievous patron of Zybilna Paleesha, a mellifluous mermaid, now reunited with Candlefoot
Certain Things Were Said
“Sylenos, perhaps in eight years you can come back and find your lost employment.” - Skerrek
“Ask me where the exit is.” - Arix Specklefoot “Where is the exit?” - Mister Light “I don’t know.” - Arix

2024.05.15 07:25 LethalLibra13 Publishing a book

So a several years back I became interested in the SCP foundation and its concept. I decided to come up with a SCP and attempted to write an article on it. I was unable to do so (as no one I asked on the wiki where helpful whatsoever) and decided to instead write a book that takes place somewhere in the SCP universe. The SCP, however, is obviously NOT official and is never given a “number” in the book (for obvious reasons). The book itself does not fully form around the foundation, as it is moreover a sort of “background setting” at certain times. I have, though, included characters from the website such as the bright family and a few other doctors but purposefully wrote them differently than how they are shown in the wiki. Now, I understand that I have to put it under a specific license, but is there a way I can publish it under the correct license and make sure that people do not attempt to supposedly copy off of it and create their own works? I honestly don’t think anyone would try to do that, considering that I’m not even using an “official” SCP, but I’m just checking to see if there is in fact an option. I don’t want some sort of big answer that strays away from the actual question like some people do, and if the answer is a no that’s completely fine. I just want to be absolutely sure, and this seems like the only place I’m able to get a response from.

2024.05.15 07:08 Ulisex94420 r/Games discusses the ethics of generative AI

link to post: https://www.reddit.com/Games/s/a2k5J5rQBs
The videogame Stellaris, developed by Paradox, has gotten a DLC about AI, wich has used AI generated voices for some characters. r\Games discusses the implications of this:
The main discussion happens in this comment, wich is too long to copy-paste
some noteworthy replies:
Fair, but let's be honest, just because it's human-made, doesn't make it not-slop automatically. There's plenty of trash human artists that produce slop, and/or rip off each other. They're just really upset right now because AI is about to rip them all off, and it will do it with the brutal efficiency that they can barely even conceive of.
AI doesn't steal any more than human artists do.
Other interesting comments:
This is a whole nothing burger, actors are paid for every single line generated by AI. This isn't about cutting costs, but rather to make their development easier.
At the end of the day, AI is here to stay and there's really no stopping it now. At least in this case, the developer is being transparent about it and compensating/crediting those involved. I'm sure we're going to see a lot more games by less ethical developers that won't even disclose it.
Are games with procedural generation taking money away from level designers?
Definitely not touching anything that uses AI voice performances. Hard line. There are more than enough great games that don't replace artistic performance with cheap slop.
Please use AI voice as much as you can. Don't let them tell you it's unethical lol. Every studio is fighting for survival today because of the exploding costs and crunch times, so if modern technology allows you to save costs on something else then developers, please do so. I want good studios to survive.
The post is very controversial so act quickly and grab some popcorn before the comments get locked.

2024.05.15 06:58 Envoy0563 Making Yugi Muto

Hi guys, I was hoping to get this community's insight on what I should do to create a Yugi Muto character. My initial idea was to go Scribes Wizard and use all of the Wizard spells to make a "deck" which is essentially my spell book. Maybe I can get help with coming up with a rules re-working to make this playstyle balanced, fair, and fun.
Rules as follows (so far):
What else? What do you guys think? Any changes?

2024.05.15 06:42 ZeZeKingyo Hello Carassius nerds, what made you like about any of the species within the genus Carassius?

I enjoyed the discovery and insights of the genus, Carassius. It's complex of their genetic history, and their meaning between unknown and commonality. Much like the goldfish we famed for over 1000 years of domestication; first fish to be so, involves diversification of breeds - from big eyes of telescopes, to lack of dorsal fin in ranchus and lionheads, to puffed up faces in orandas, and shortened bodies of ryukins and fantails, to duplicated tail fin of fancy goldfish, wakin and jikin.
The reason I enjoyed the genus is because they are amazingly adaptive, easy to keep and raise, and remarkably strange around their genetics. For example, I once thought goldfish were diploids. But after some research on some article incorporating its entire genome, it in fact surprised me the most to be a tetraploid - four copies of chromosome sets!
Goldfish, Prussian Carp, Crucian Carp, the Japanese Crucian Carp. They all put me to motivate looking after their species profile and keeping my motivation integral. Let me know in the comments!

2024.05.15 06:32 GoldenSpark1 Okay so let's talk

I don't mean to whine and complain. (Or maybe I do.) Look the new Nancy's House variation is amazing and I'm LOVING that family is finally getting more love in the cosmetics field, it's about damn time....ACTUALLY while we're on the subject of family...
You see where this is going?
I bet you do pookie....
Where's that new family member?
Listen this year us almost half way over and still no new family member or even any news whatsoever on them. We can't even get a confirmed name or any teasers. This also worries me cause if it's taking them THIS LONG to get thi one out how long until we're waiting for the next one? November....December? Will we just be getting one family member a year.... also with this delay on family. It makes releasing a new victim or Family separately weird cause theirs gonna be that huge side imbalance for a few days now constantly when a new character releases...
I know the devs won't respond...or if they do it'll just be a copy pasted "stay tuned..." but is anyone else thinking it's just gonna be one family member for 2024? 😂😂😭

2024.05.15 06:11 entr0py_101 Need some assistance for a name [OC] [Art]

Hello fellow adventurers, I am in dire need of assistance. Not actually dire, but I would just like help with naming a certain character I have made. They are a Raggamoffyn, which is a monster from 3rd edition I think. I learned about it from Dungeon Dad on YouTube, so if you want to learn more in depth information, go check him out. He has a lot of other really cool videos so I recommend looking around his channel too. But back to my character, they're a Raggamoffyn, which is basically a sentient construct made of magical clothing that can take control of another creature's body in exactly the way you'd expect. I have attached a copy of the character and would like some name suggestions from anyone willing to offer them :)))

2024.05.15 06:06 maryjanepurplerain How do you organize your mods?

I'm using MO2 and for a long time I've tried various methods for the ideal organization of the left pane to group mods together that all touch the same thing. The problem with that is so many mods touch different areas. Where do you put a mod like Skyrim Reputation? In Dialogue Improvements? Economy? Or do you just throw it into your very long "Gameplay" category? How about Simple Fishing Overhaul? I put in under gameplay because that's where my immersion survival stuff is, but it's not really a gameplay mod. It's an animation and dialogue mod lol
When one is big enough, like WACCF for example (though I'm not using it) I put them in my Core and Bug Fixes section with everything from USSEP to flute animation fix.
In the end, I decided its best to just keep it broad though it hurts the organizational side of my brain a little bit. Here's my current separators:
Guess how many mods I have?

2024.05.15 06:05 devils_sunset High End PC Build for Gaming and AI related work

Hi Guys, I have always had the dream of buying a High End Gaming PC since my childhood. I never had a PC since my 10th standard, and even back then it was a wooden PC. I have worked my ass off, for the last 6 years and patiently saved up 4.2 Lakhs to finally make it happen.
However, as I have never bought a Gaming PC before, I have no clue where to start. Having been lurked this subreddit from time to time for a while, I decided it's best to ask the community for help. Therefore, I will request all the IT experts, fellow gamers and anyone with adequate knowledge here on this subreddit, to help me out as much as possible.
I plan to use this PC mostly for Gaming, AI and Development and I want to buy the parts such that the whole setup lasts at least 7 - 10 years barring accidents or unfortunate events.
What will you be doing with this PC?
Gaming, Single / Multiplayer AAA Games at best resolution, learning AI, building Virtual Machines, Coding and Streaming.
What is your maximum budget?
4.2 Lakhs. Willing to go 4.5 Lakhs if the accessories are worth it. If I can do this in 3 - 3.5 Lakhs, its even better (Not counting the price for Gaming Chair and Table). Suggest me future upgrades too.
What, exactly, do you need included in the budget?
Full Gaming PC Setup (Includes UPS, Power Supply, Cooling Mechanisms, Motherboard, Keyboard, Mouse and all other hardware as well as software components to have the full setup ready), Speakers, Gaming Chair and Table.
Which state/city will you be purchasing the parts in?
I am currently posted at Bhubaneswar, Odisha and will be staying here for at least 2 years. Buying Online seems like the only choice here, but I don't want to get faulty parts or get scammed in any way. Please suggest me some trusted sites to purchase all the parts.
Will you be overclocking?
No, I don't understand it fully, but I don't want to overclock the PC as it might reduce the PC life.
Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build?
Minimum tech specs requirement: 2 TB SSD, 16 GB VRAM, 64 GB RAM, i7 Processor, Cooling accessories (not fully aware of these but liquid cooling as I heard that's the best? Not sure, please recommend!), 4 USB-A ports, 1 USB-C Port, Bluetooth, Wi-Fi Support, HDMI, Audio Jack, Speakers and SD Card Reader. Please let me know what other slots might be useful to have, as I am sure I might have forgotten something.
Do you have any specific case preferences?
Not in Particular, I don't really like fancy showcases so I don't care if there is RGB or made out of Glass. I just want everything to be durable and the temperatures to be under sustainable levels at all times. If Coolers are necessary, then so be it, I will prefer them over Software and other upgrades.
Like I have mentioned this earlier, I want this build to last me a long time, hence my reason for dishing out so much into it.
I will be using it for up to 12 - 16 Hours everyday, so please, suggest me proper accessories to consider.
Also, if the build crosses the budget, I would still appreciate any inputs for future upgrades to this build, as I can purchase them later down the line.
Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget?
Yes. I want Windows 11, Office 365, WinZip and PDF readers at the very least as will also be used for work. Other software are welcome, I will eventually upgrade them, when i have more cash flow.
I want to thank all of you in advance. I will be checking up the post from time to time and shoot questions when confused.
I will also keep you updated on my purchase and will post a Setup Showcase, once everything is in place.
Cheers. Hope you all have a great day ahead.

2024.05.15 05:52 StarTechUP_Inc PostgreSQL vs MySQL: 10 Key Differences

Read the full blog here!
If you are in the midst of choosing a database management system (DBMS), you have two top options: PostgreSQL and MySQL.
Both databases are open-source and have a large user base, making them popular choices for many web applications.
But which one is better for your specific needs?

MySQL Database

Firstly, let's take a closer look at MySQL.
MySQL is an open-source relational database management systems (RDBMS) made by Oracle. It's designed to help users efficiently store, manage, and pull up structured data. Boasting its versatility, MySQL is being used for everything from small projects to big websites and even massive company solutions.

Why choose MySQL?

MySQL is a go-to choice for companies when it comes to software as a service. If you're looking for reasons why, here are a few of them:

PostgreSQL Database

Now, we look at PostgreSQL, another popular open-source RDBMS.
PostgreSQL, or "Postgres" for short, kicked off back in 1986 at the Berkeley Computer Science Department, University of California. It's an object-relational database management system (ORDBMS) that's packed with powerful features and really nails standards compliance.
It's common use cases are:

Why choose PostgreSQL?

Among the relational databases, PostgreSQL has been gaining popularity over the years due to several factors, including:

Key Differences of PostgreSQL vs MySQL

Popularity
The popularity of PostgreSQL and MySQL is soaring thanks to the cloud, which makes things easier to set up.
In 2023, PostgreSQL was awarded the Database Management System of the Year by DB-Engines.
While PostgreSQL is the go-to for professional developers, learners are still big on MySQL, with 45% preferring it over PostgreSQL.
Data types
MySQL and PostgreSQL both handle a bunch of data types, from the simple to the more complex ones.
MySQL supports various data types for different applications, including Integers, Characters or Strings, Dates with Timestamps and Time Zones, Boolean, Float, Decimal, Large Text, and BLOB for binary data (like images). However, it doesn't support geometric data types.
On the other hand, PostgreSQL supports traditional SQL data types (e.g., Numeric, Strings, Date, Decimal) and unstructured types (e.g., JSON, XML, HSTORE), network data types, bit strings, etc. It stands out by supporting ARRAYs, NETWORK types, and Geometric data types for spatial data, thanks to the PostGIS extension, an open-source extension for advanced spatial functions.
See the complete details here.
License
MySQL's community edition uses the GPL license, which is pretty open.
On the other hand, Postgres goes with the PostgreSQL license—it's liberal, kind of like BSD or MIT licenses.
Despite MySQL being all about GPL, some users worry since Oracle owns it. That's actually why MariaDB was created as a sort of branch-off from MySQL. Oracle still owns MySQL, but the community rallies behind MariaDB.
PostgreSQL has been free to use and distribute since its inception. It's never been owned by any enterprise company unless you count the 1986 Berkeley Computer Science Department as a company.
Queries
MySQL uses a proprietary SQL database language, which is straightforward to learn and implement.
In contrast, PostgreSQL uses the standard SQL dialect that beginners may struggle with at first but will reward them in the long run since they'll have a solid foundation for other databases like Oracle, SQL Server, and others.
Database performance
MySQL performs better with simple SQL queries, while PostgreSQL excels at complex ones. However, for most workloads, Postgres and MySQL have similar performance, with up to 30% variation. Regardless of the database, missing an index can degrade query performance by 10x to 1000x.
MySQL has always been faster than PostgreSQL due to the way it implements data structures and locks tables, which usually leads to performance issues when dealing with large databases.
However, with its advanced indexing functionality and MVCC model for concurrency control, PostgreSQL can outperform MySQL on complex queries and large datasets.
Security
MySQL and PostgreSQL both have excellent security features. They both support RBAC.
They also support secure connections through SSL, advanced authentication methods like Kerberos and LDAP, and encryption at the column level.
However, PostgreSQL has a slight edge over MySQL in terms of security. It uses its client authentication system to perform user authentication, while MySQL relies on the host operating system for this task, which can be more vulnerable.
Architecture
MySQL is a relational database, while PostgreSQL is an object-relational database with advanced data types and inheritance for objects. However, this complexity can make PostgreSQL more challenging to use.
PostgreSQL comes with one ACID-compliant storage engine, while MySQL gives you options with 15 different storage engines beyond its default storage engine, InnoDB. This huge selection means you can easily find one that fits your specific needs.
Storage
Data storage is essential for any database. PostgreSQL and MySQL offer various data storage options, including Tables and Indexes on disk. This section looks at two storage options: common storage and pluggable storage.
PostgreSQL supports tablespaces for storing Tables, Indexes, and Materialized Views in various locations, improving I/O efficiency. However, it doesn't offer pluggable storage engines yet.
MySQL also uses tablespaces (within the InnoDB engine) for efficient I/O distribution by grouping physical objects. Unlike PostgreSQL, MySQL supports pluggable storage engines, enabling it to meet specific needs to store data for different applications, such as OLTP and Data Warehousing.
Replication
MySQL supports primary-replica and multi-replica replication, copying data changes from the primary to replicas using SQL. This asynchronous replication could affect performance and scalability.
MySQL replication allows replicas to manage reads and writes, ensuring continuity after a primary crash. However, syncing changes when transitioning a replica back to primary can slow the process, particularly with lengthy SQL operations.
PostgreSQL replication uses WAL files for fast, reliable, and manageable replication, outperforming MySQL's. It supports primary-replica and multi-replica setups, including cascading replication, with options for synchronous or asynchronous modes. Asynchronous allows for read requests on replicas, while synchronous replication ensures consistency across replicas and the primary but slows down transaction commits.
Community support
PostgreSQL and MySQL are both open-source databases, which means that they have a large community of developers who contribute to their development. However, the size of the community differs for these two databases.

Retro Gaming 10’s- Sleeping Dogs: (2012)

When it comes down underrated action-adventure games from the 2010’s decade Sleeping Dogs is quite possibly one of the top ten names that comes to mind. Sleeping Dogs was developed by United Front Games and published by Square Enix. Sleeping Dogs was a game from 2012 that ended up being way better than it had any business being. Since its release Sleeping Dogs has appeared on multiple game systems including PlayStation 3, PS4, Xbox 360, Xbox One and PC. Sleeping Dogs was like Grand Theft Auto if the setting took place in Hong Kong with a predominately Asian cast of characters. The story fort Sleeping Dogs revolved around Wei Shen the main protagonist who gets arrested in order to work undercover as a cop and gain entry into on of the triads in Hong Kong. The game allowed players to do variety of things from threatening people to hijacking cars and fighting rival gangs. The open world environment for Sleeping Dogs looked better than anything you have seen in a GTA title prior to 2012. The brawling mechanics in sleeping dogs looked similar to something you would see in Def Jam: Fight For New York but better. Players could use Wei to travel around in open world environments using parkour and had the ability to hijack vehicles by jumping from motorcycle unto a car.
https://preview.redd.it/iksnlf38hi0d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1f4ed7830c41b308e7d2d53dd4ee8e847ca6d48b
The gameplay mechanics featured in Sleeping Dogs is something that RockStar Games should have implemented in Grand Theft Auto IV to make it more exciting. In some ways Sleeping Dogs felt like a cross between Yakuza and Grand Theft Auto which was one of the many things that added to its overall appeal. Despite, not becoming a massive commercial success Sleeping Dogs still managed to reach over 1.5 million copies in sales. Even though, we got to see the Sleeping Dogs: Definitive Edition back in 2014 many people still want Square Enix to make a sequel. The only problem is that the developer for the Sleeping Dogs title United Front Games became defunct back in 2016. While Square Enix still technically owns the intellectual property for Sleeping Dogs it would be difficult to find another developer to make a sequel worthy of the game itself. Sleeping Dogs is a game that developed an unexpected cult following over the past decade and its one of those IP’s that Square Enix should consider reviving with a different developer. Sleeping Dogs was video game that had the potential to have its own series but unfortunately it was not a priority for Square Enix.

2024.05.15 05:21 16trees Cog & Compass - new editions of Loner!

I know there are a handful of people on here who have joined me in Loner 2e discussions so I thought it worth posting that Zotiquest Games have put out two more versions of the game, but these are very specifically geared to a setting (Steampunk and Feudal Japan). My copy of Cog & Compass came today and I'm really excited about it! I've only read through it quickly, but these are the things that caught my eye.
The TL;DR of it is that there's a defined world and very clear guidance, which is much appreciated.

2024.05.15 04:58 numbasafossil14 The Black Dog is a Bearding Symbol

The Black Dog is a Bearding Symbol
This is my first post on the sub and I'm fairly new to Gaylorism (was deep into Gaylor tiktok last year before taking a break and just found this sub within the last month or two!) so full disclosure, I don't in any sense have a comprehensive knowledge of Gaylor lore, nor do I know everything about TayloJoe Alwyn. Nonetheless, I think I found something interesting! (I'm really sorry if this post is too long and I point things out that are obvious; I'm autistic and this is how I communicate when I'm excited and care a lot!!)
Inspired by this post on the LWYMMD music video, I decided to rewatch a few other MVs and found something in Blank Space: three black dogs. Dobermans, actually! They appear during 0:48-0:58 and are being walked on leashes by Taylor and her "love interest." There is even a shot JUST of the dogs. I think it's common knowledge that Blank Space is a song about PR relationships and bearding contracts, so seeing these dogs seemed significant. They of course brought to mind the Doberman in the Fortnight MV and "The Black Dog", and I thought, what if all these black dogs are a bearding symbol?

https://preview.redd.it/694l9olv6i0d1.png?width=1014&format=png&auto=webp&s=4def19eb0556ca29a641a6ee9e1461febd642228
Before diving into the explanation for that, some context on Dobermans provided by Wikipedia. The breed was created by a tax collector who wanted protection from thieves as he traveled and collected taxes. In other words, Dobermans were created to safeguard the collection of money. They are ranked the 5th most intelligent dog in the category of "obedience command training," are "tenaciously loyal," and are "kept as a guard dog and as a companion animal." More on why those traits tie into this theory later.
The appearance of the Dobermans in Blank Space isn't too noteworthy by itself. They can easily be written off as a status symbol, like the mansion and horses and "new money, suit and tie." But in connection with TTPD, they take on a new meaning.
In the Fortnight MV, we see a Doberman trot across screen while Taylor is strapped down, being experimented on (2:42). I always thought that was odd but shrugged it off as a casual nod to "The Black Dog" and didn't look for any deeper meaning for why it would be included in that particular scene -- until now.

https://preview.redd.it/buc47hx37i0d1.png?width=1014&format=png&auto=webp&s=524478d8b4425bab098d6e787016228f391e65d1
During this scene, we see scientists examining Taylor's head and reading lyrics ("I love you, it's ruining my life") in her brainwaves. This scene screams exploitation even before the electroshock therapy begins. They begin shocking her, sparks are flying, scientists are ducking. At 3:06, we see all this but also the Doberman, standing in one of the doorways. While it takes a few steps forward, the dog is otherwise unaffected by this violence in that it isn't barking, rushing to Taylor's aid, or attacking the scientists who are causing this violence. Yet, its position at the doorway to the lab seems to imply it is a guard dog. It's just not Taylor's guard dog. It's not there to protect her. It's there to protect the experimentation and exploitation process, to ensure this process can continue taking place. It's Post Malone's character who ultimately saves her from it. Coming back to tie this up later.

https://preview.redd.it/tk15o8477i0d1.png?width=1014&format=png&auto=webp&s=d3db983b98490dff491420ecca730eaaced3bcfe
Now, "The Black Dog." It may be my favorite song on TTPD and The Anthology. In preparing for this post, I searched the sub to see if my ideas were already shared somewhere, and I found this comment by u/Small-Expert-4020: "To me this is the only song that makes me think of joe- and it sounds way more like a friend breakup then being sad over an ex. The way she says 'i was someone you shared secrets and your location with' sounds so much like a confirmation that shes sad the bearding relationship ended on less than good terms" (Wanted to copy/paste rather than link to help explain my theory)
I totally agree with this interpretation that the song is about Joe and the loss of their relationship, not just the PR relationship but whatever personal relationship they may have had, because I don't think you share a PR relationship with someone for that long and not find a single facet of it that's genuine. I don't know if they were in love, but I do believe they were friends, confidants, and I believe Taylor loved him like a brother. I think the lyric "For a cruel fraternity I pledged / And I still mean it" says this directly. She pledged to a fraternity with him by loving him like a brother, and that was the part of them that was real. That's why it's painful and bewildering to lose, because she still loves him like that despite him being gone.
This isn't the only time she's referenced a familial love toward Joe. In CIWYW, she writes, "I'm laughin' with my lover, makin' forts under covers / Trust him like a brother, yeah, you know I did one thing right." Laughing with her lover -- maybe they're laughing because he isn't really her lover. Making forts under covers -- seems innocent and not sexual to me; making pillow forts with roof blankets is something friends and siblings do. She trusts him like a brother, and that shows her that she's picked one beard right. This one may be more meaningful than the others.
Back to "The Black Dog," I've read the posts about how it could refer to a Black Dog Tavern or a Black Cat Tavern, and it may, but I think the black dog is also Joe himself. Again, the song doesn't feel like losing a lover; it feels like losing a dear friend and confidant. And of course there is the line "'Cause tail between your legs, you're leaving." The subject of the song, Joe, is the dog, leaving with his tail between his legs.
Remember the info about Dobermans that they're both guard dogs and loyal companions. Joe could've been, and likely was, a PR relationship that offered Taylor safety as a closeted queer person, which her team enforced so as to assure her financial success, and a person she truly came to trust, love, and share her plans with.
Blank Space puts an irreverent spin on bearding, like it's a necessary evil she can at least have some fun with. I think with Joe, it became something meaningful, and I think he was part of her plans to come out in 2019. When her plans were ruined, she was heartbroken, but at least she still had him as a friend and confidant and someone who knew what she was feeling. But maybe he got tired of the bearding after so long, maybe he wanted to live more authentically and she wasn't yet ready to. If you read the lyrics, she's saying: It's hitting me that you're really gone. I don't understand why you left. We were dreaming together. We made those best laid plans. You said you'd be brave and play my man and now that I really need you, you're gone and it kills me. Do you hate me for not coming out? Old habits (closeting) die screaming.
I think the loss of Joe has made her feel more bitter than ever about bearding, which could add to why she's being so in-our-faces about the PR relationship with Travis. At least with Blank Space, there seemed to be an aspect of fun about it. But the performance she's giving now just seems painful and sad. Like she's determined to play it up as much as possible because it can't mean anything real to her again. I noted this past weekend (though haven't found a pic of it) one of the visuals during ICDIWABH is a marquee saying The Black Dog (Club?). This reference during that song also supports the idea that losing Joe did break her heart in a way, and now she's bearding with a broken heart by making it so visible and so ridiculous.
In conclusion, Taylor has seemed to learn a lesson that the beard/the black dog won't save her in the end. The black dog just perpetuates the pain of closeting. It's Post Malone's character in the Fortnight MV (whom I agree represents queer, closeted Taylor) that saves her from the exploitation of the scientists/her team. And I really, really hope she's going to save herself by coming out.

These AI Tools Are About to Change Game Development Forever
Video game development is becoming so expensive and complex, that it might not be possible to push any further using existing production methods. However, several advances in AI technology could make development easier, and even make entirely new things possible in video games we've never seen before.
NPCs Who Think for Themselves
Video games have always had some form of intelligence driving the behavior of non-player characters (NPCs) such as enemies, shopkeepers, or random people walking around a village. I remember how much of a big deal it was when Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion introduced "Radiant AI" where characters would have lives, routines, and behaviors independent of what the player was doing. It transformed how alive the game world felt, and there's been steady improvement in these types of (relatively) simple AI systems.
Now, however, with the rise of multimodal generative AI, NPCs can be imbued with sophisticated, nuanced behavior. They can understand context, and react dynamically to the world and to the player in ways that weren't possible before. A good example is NVIDIA's "ACE" or Avatar Cloud Engine. Here characters can have dynamic conversations with the player (and I suppose with each other) with the right facial expressions, vocal tone, and so on.
You don't even have to wait to try a version of this concept for yourself. If you own a copy of The Elder Scrolls: Skyrim (and who doesn't?) you can use the Inworld Skyrim - AI NPCs mod which uses technology from Inworld Studios,

2024.05.15 04:05 Dantes-Monkey Question about 1980 Shogun series

We just finished watching a copy of this version of the Shogun saga. Unlike the newer series this one has no subtitles when Japanese conversation took place.
Orson Welles narrates some of the action as I recall he did when we originally watched 40 years ago, but the Japanese dialogue, at least on this version we watched continues with no subtitles. Oddly, there ARE subtitles in various languages but they only translate English conversations between English speaking characters.
I’m wondering if we have a bad copy or a bootleg. Do the newer copies of this Shogun translate the Japanese conversations as well. Or was this was a way of making the audience feel the alienation of Blackthorn. I just do not recall after all these years. I bought this online years ago and only watched for comparison after seeing the newer version (which is quite different from the book and the old series).

History of Maithili Literature - Resources
Having previously shared resources on the history of Maithili literature (here), I am now going to compile a list of actual Maithili literary classics, both classical and modern. If you have any recommendations, please suggest them.
📌 Early Maithili Literature (circa 700–1350 AD):
This era witnessed the emergence of ballads, songs, and dohas. Among the earliest authors was Jyotirishwar Thakur. His notable contribution to Maithili literature is the Varṇa Ratnākara (1324), an encyclopedic work presented in prose.
1. Varṇa Ratnākara (1324) by Jyotirishwar Thakur - The earliest prose work in the Maithili language, this literary piece offers valuable insights into the life and culture of medieval India. The text is structured into seven Kallolas (waves): Nagara Varṇana, Nāyikā Varṇana, Asthāna Varṇana, Ṛtu Varṇana, Prayāṇa Varṇana, Bhaṭṭādi Varṇana, and Śmaśāna Varṇana.

📌 Middle Maithili Literature (circa 1350–1830 AD):
This period was characterized by a flourishing of theatrical writings. Notable Maithili writers of this era included:
- Vidyapati (1350–1450)
- Srimanta Sankardeva (1449–1568)
- Govindadas (late 17th century)
- Manbodh (17th century)

1. Purush Pariksha by Vidyapati - Purushpariksha" is a narrative created by Vidyapati. He composed it under the guidance of Maharaja Shiv Singh. The text presents instructive tales in the tradition of Panchatantra. This work stands as a unique creation not only for sociologists, historians, human scientists, and political scientists but also for philosophers and literary enthusiasts.

I'm still on the lookout for more texts. If you come across any additional Maithili literature works from that period,do suggest in the comments. This list is a work in progress, and I'll be updating it bit by bit.

📌 Modern Maithili Literature (1830 AD to date):
George Abraham Grierson, an Irish linguist, and civil servant made a huge impact on the growth of Modern Maithili. His detailed research on Maithili folklore and grammar set the stage for its development today. Magazines and journals also played a big role in shaping Maithili during this time. Baldev Mishra, Surendra Jha 'Suman,' Radha Krishna Choudhary, Jaykant Mishra, Binod Bihari Verma, Dr. Dhirendra, Parichay Das, and Gajendra Thakur were key players in this linguistic journey.
1. Payasvini by Surendra Jha - A collection of 25 poems about beauty of nature, colourful imagery and simplicity of rural life.
