2024.05.28 14:47 wooky93 Used Spark prices are insane

I bought a ‘18 Spark new in 2018 for $10,500. It was the most basic model available with no options. When I say no options I mean no power windows/locks/mirrors, no cruise control, no chrome trim of any kind and hubcaps on steel wheels. My oldest daughter got her license a little over a year ago and really likes the Spark so I thought why not look at getting another one for her first car. Holy crap! Even supposedly “cheap” cars like Sparks are ridiculously expensive. I started looking at some of the rental car companies used car sales like Enterprise which has a lot of Sparks in their fleet and for one that by now is a few years old with say 30ish thousand miles on it the asking prices are in the mid teens. Their fleets have all the options mine doesn’t but dam, this is crazy. Anybody else try to buy a Spark recently and are seeing the same thing? I’m in the St. Louis MO area.

Fast Casual Restaurant Market Share, Size, Growth, Trends, Analysis, Report and Forecast Period of 2024-2032

Fast Casual Restaurant Market Introduction

The global fast casual restaurant market size reached USD 211.52 billion in 2023. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.5% between 2024 and 2032, reaching almost USD 563.41 billion by 2032. This staggering growth reflects the increasing popularity and significance of fast casual dining in the food industry landscape.
Fast Casual Restaurant Market
Fast casual restaurants have emerged as a compelling alternative to traditional fast food joints and upscale casual dining establishments, offering consumers a balance between convenience, quality, and affordability. In this blog post, we will explore the evolution of fast casual restaurants, from their humble beginnings to their current status as major players in the global culinary scene.

Origins of Fast Casual Dining:

The roots of fast casual dining can be traced back to the late 20th century when consumers began seeking alternatives to traditional fast food. Pioneering brands such as Chipotle Mexican Grill and Panera Bread emerged during this period, offering fresh, made-to-order meals in a casual dining setting. These early innovators set the stage for the fast casual revolution by challenging the notion that quick service meant sacrificing quality and flavor. Instead, they introduced a new concept that combined the speed and convenience of fast food with the culinary standards of casual dining.

Key Characteristics of Fast Casual Restaurants:

Fast casual restaurants are characterized by several key attributes that set them apart from traditional fast food chains and sit-down restaurants. One of the defining features of fast casual dining is its emphasis on quality ingredients. Unlike fast food, which often relies on processed and pre-packaged ingredients, fast casual restaurants prioritize fresh, locally sourced produce, meats, and other components. Additionally, fast casual establishments typically offer a high degree of customization, allowing customers to build their meals according to their preferences. This assembly line format not only enhances the dining experience but also promotes efficiency and speed of service. Furthermore, fast casual restaurants strive to create a casual and inviting ambiance that encourages diners to relax and enjoy their meals.

Evolution of Menu Offerings:

Over the years, fast casual restaurants have evolved to meet changing consumer preferences and dietary trends. While traditional fast food menus were often limited to burgers, fries, and other staples, fast casual establishments have embraced a broader range of culinary influences and flavors. Today, customers can find fast casual restaurants serving everything from gourmet burgers and artisanal pizzas to poke bowls and plant-based fare. Moreover, there has been a growing emphasis on offering healthier options, such as salads, grain bowls, and lean protein choices. This shift reflects the increasing demand for nutritious and wholesome meals among health-conscious consumers.

Innovation in Service and Operations:

In addition to evolving menu offerings, fast casual restaurants have also embraced innovation in service and operations. One notable example is the integration of technology to enhance the ordering and delivery process. Many fast casual chains now offer mobile ordering apps, kiosks, and online platforms, allowing customers to place orders conveniently and efficiently. This technology-driven approach not only improves the overall customer experience but also helps to streamline operations and reduce wait times. Furthermore, fast casual restaurants have been at the forefront of sustainability initiatives, implementing eco-friendly practices such as waste reduction, recycling, and energy conservation.

Impact on Consumer Behavior:

The rise of fast casual dining has had a profound impact on consumer behavior and dining habits. Today's diners are increasingly seeking out fast casual restaurants for their convenience, quality, and value proposition. Unlike traditional fast food chains, which are often associated with unhealthy eating habits, fast casual establishments offer a more balanced and nutritious alternative. Moreover, the casual dining experience provided by fast casual restaurants appeals to a wide range of demographics, from busy professionals looking for a quick lunch to families seeking a casual dinner outing. As a result, fast casual dining has become a staple of modern food culture, influencing everything from how we eat to where we socialize.

Challenges and Future Outlook:

Despite the rapid growth and popularity of fast casual restaurants, the industry faces several challenges and uncertainties that will shape its future trajectory. Understanding these challenges and proactively addressing them will be essential for fast casual brands to maintain their competitive edge and continue thriving in the dynamic foodservice landscape.

Competition:

One of the foremost challenges facing fast casual restaurants is the intensifying competition within the industry. As more players enter the market and existing brands expand their offerings, competition for market share becomes increasingly fierce. Fast casual restaurants must differentiate themselves through innovative menu offerings, exceptional service, and unique dining experiences to stand out in a crowded marketplace.

Evolving Consumer Preferences:

Consumer preferences and behaviors are continually evolving, driven by factors such as changing demographics, dietary trends, and socio-cultural influences. Fast casual restaurants must stay attuned to these shifting preferences and adapt their menus, marketing strategies, and operational practices accordingly. For example, the rising demand for plant-based options, sustainable sourcing, and health-conscious offerings presents both opportunities and challenges for fast casual brands.

Operational Challenges:

Running a successful fast casual restaurant involves managing complex operational challenges, including supply chain management, labor costs, and real estate expenses. Rising food costs, fluctuations in commodity prices, and labor shortages can significantly impact profitability and operational efficiency. Moreover, maintaining consistency in food quality and service standards across multiple locations poses a significant operational challenge for fast casual chains with a widespread presence.

Technology Integration:

While technology has played a transformative role in enhancing the customer experience and streamlining operations, fast casual restaurants must navigate the complexities of technology integration effectively. Investing in digital ordering platforms, mobile apps, and delivery services can improve convenience and accessibility for customers. However, ensuring seamless integration and cybersecurity measures are essential to prevent data breaches and protect customer privacy.

Changing Regulatory Landscape:

Fast casual restaurants are subject to a myriad of regulations and compliance requirements, ranging from food safety standards to labor laws and environmental regulations. Staying abreast of regulatory changes and ensuring compliance can be a significant challenge for restaurant operators, particularly amidst evolving legislation and enforcement practices.
Despite these challenges, the future outlook for the fast casual restaurant industry remains promising, driven by several key trends and opportunities:

Continued Growth:

The fast casual restaurant market is expected to continue its robust growth trajectory, fueled by increasing consumer demand for convenient, high-quality dining options. Emerging markets, urbanization trends, and evolving consumer lifestyles present ample opportunities for expansion and market penetration.

Innovation and Differentiation:

Innovation will be a key driver of success for fast casual restaurants in the future. Embracing culinary innovation, technology integration, and sustainability initiatives can help brands differentiate themselves and attract discerning consumers seeking unique dining experiences.

Health and Wellness Focus:

With growing awareness of health and wellness, fast casual restaurants have an opportunity to capitalize on the demand for nutritious, wholesome menu options. Offering plant-based alternatives, allergen-friendly choices, and transparent sourcing practices can appeal to health-conscious consumers and drive sales growth.

Digital Transformation:

The ongoing digital transformation of the foodservice industry presents opportunities for fast casual restaurants to enhance customer engagement, optimize operations, and unlock new revenue streams. Leveraging data analytics, artificial intelligence, and personalized marketing strategies can enable brands to deliver tailored experiences and foster customer loyalty.

Sustainability Initiatives:

Sustainability is becoming increasingly important to consumers, and fast casual restaurants have an opportunity to demonstrate their commitment to environmental stewardship. Implementing sustainable sourcing practices, reducing food waste, and adopting eco-friendly packaging can resonate with environmentally conscious consumers and strengthen brand reputation.

2024.05.28 07:19 NOKOTEN Oh how I remember the olden days.

Oh how I remember the olden days.
Hark! A tale of woe I weave, a lament for the limitations of Deepwoken's garb! Why, oh cruel fate, dost thou deny us the artifice of garments most splendid? We are cast into a world of drab hues, where shades of night reign supreme! Can there be no raiment of rose, no blush to adorn our avatars?
Behold! ('t is but a request to return thine attention to the image at hand) A vision of bygone eras, where men of valor donned skirts that flowed, a testament to their prowess! Forget not, sirs, that Mars himself, the god of war, was oft depicted in such attire! And hark! Did not men of old claim the color pink as their own, a symbol of courage and chivalry? Even stockings and heels, once the purview of gentlemen, are now banished to the realm of the forgotten!
Is there no hope, then, for a touch of the flamboyant, a hint of the whimsical within Deepwoken's grasp? Must we forever be shrouded in this oppressive cloak of dullness? Oh, for the days of yore, when masculinity knew no bounds, and self-expression was a right, not a privilege denied!

2024.05.28 07:17 nahbestie Trip Report- 2 Weeks over Golden Week Golden Route + Hiroshima/Hokkaido

I always enjoy reading trip reports so I thought I would go ahead and share a report on my Golden Week trip with my parents.
Warning, long post!
This trip was from May 2nd to 15th. Some background, I (late 20's) am a foreign resident living in Hokkaido. I have also lived in Tokyo before so I am pretty comfortable with navigating the city and transit system, and speak intermediate Japanese. I have briefly visited Kyoto and Osaka but this was my first time in Hiroshima. This was my parents' (both 60) first time in Japan, and as it was probably one of few trips they will make to Japan, we decided to try and hit a lot of major sites for the first half before spending time in Hokkaido.
Obviously Golden Week isn't the most ideal time to travel in Japan, but as a resident, this was the best time I could travel without having to take too much time off work. My parents like travelling, but this was their first time in Asia and anywhere where English isn't widely spoken. They enjoyed their time here, but I am pretty sure if I weren't living here, it wouldn't have been a destination they would have travelled to on their own. I planned most of the trip myself. Parents weren’t too interested in pop-culture (anime, music, etc) so I was able to save time by cutting out a lot of the more touristy anime spots. They were pretty down for anything else, and Dad knew he wanted to see a baseball game and visit Hiroshima, so we made sure to make those two happen.
May 2nd-Arrival in Tokyo
(Hotel Sotetsu Fresa Inn Tokyo Tamachi-Two double bed rooms)
Parents flew from Vancouver to Narita and landed shortly before 3:00pm. I flew JetStar from Hokkaido and was set to land shortly after 3:00. I figured I would have time to get my bag and get from terminal 3 to 1 to meet them before they got through customs and baggage. However, my flight was a bit delayed and landed closer to 3:30. Not a big deal, but surprisingly my parents got through customs and baggage and were waiting for me before I even got my bag. We took the train directly to Mita Station in Minato, which was only a 10 minute walk to our hotel. It was around 6:00 by the time we checked in and got settled, and the parents didn't sleep on the plane, so we decided on dinner at the hotel restaurant before grabbing some conbini snacks and heading to bed by 9:00.
May 3rd (Constitution Memorial Day)-Tokyo
Taking advantage of their jetlag, we were up and ready to go at 7:00 am, but first dropped off our suitcases to be shipped to our Kyoto hotel. We had each brought a mid-size suitcase and backpack, so we shipped our suitcases and kept two days worth of stuff in our backpacks. It was a bit of a pain to have to rearrange all the bags so soon after arriving, but I wanted to send the bags earlier, as I was worried about delays due to Golden Week. It was very easy to do at the hotel, and so worth it to not have to haul bags all over.
We grabbed a conbini breakfast before heading to Asakusa and Sensoji. There were a fair amount of people there at around 8:00, but not crowded yet. Almost all of the shops were still closed but my parents really enjoyed seeing their first temple. After grabbing a goshuin paper (I forgot my goshuincho at home, I was so cheesed) we took a walk to the Sumida river and had coffee with a beautiful view of the Skytree. After that, we made our way back through Sensoji, towards Kappabashi Street. It was after 10:00 so all of the shops in front of the temple were open and crowds were in full swing. My parents didn’t mind the crowds too much but they were really happy we arrived early and had the chance to see things with less people. Mom was on the lookout for kitchen knives, hence the stop in Kappabashi. There were only a few shops open due to the holiday, but it was fine.
We headed back to the Minato area for one of our few food reservations, the Harry Potter cafe. (Booked through the official site a few weeks in advance.) I really wanted to drag my parents to a silly themed cafe, but I knew anything like the Kirby or Pokemon cafe would be totally lost on them, so I compromised with the Harry Potter cafe. I’ve been to enough themed cafes to know that you pay a lot for the experience and atmosphere and the quality of the food is secondary. That said, the food here was my least favourite of all the themed cafes I have been to in Japan. The decorations and restaurant were cool, but unless you’re a diehard fan, I would skip this one.
After lunch, we headed to Tokyo Tower. We didn’t go up, but we took a look at the shops, saw the Children’s Day carp streamers, and stopped at the beer garden. We were leaving to go have a break at the hotel when we saw a sign for the Japantique Show and decided to stop in. (Free admission) It was cool but everything was way out of our budgets, by like, thousands of dollars. After that, we bussed back to our hotel for a rest. We stopped for dinner at a Yakiniku Like near the station, which is a great option for budget yakiniku in my opinion, before heading to Ginza to window shop and look at more things we couldn’t afford. I also had to point out the Kabukiza theatre to mom and dad, as I am a big Kabuki fan. We didn’t have time for a show this trip but I definitely recommend seeing even just a single act if it’s something you might be interested in. Headed back to the hotel and was in bed by 9:00.
May 4th (Greenery Day)-Tokyo
Another early morning, we took the train and arrived at Harajuku station around 8:00 a.m. We had breakfast at Sarutahiko Coffee, above the station. After that we wandered towards Meiji Jingu. It was already warming up (high of 29 this day) so it was nice being under all the trees. As we passed the entrance to the garden, they were just about ready to open, so we decided to wait and go in. It was still too early for most of the flowers to bloom, but it was still a really nice spot. After the garden we made our way to the main shrine, followed by the Meiji Jingu Museum. They were having an exhibit on dresses of the Meiji era, particularly focused on Empress Shoken, so I thought it would be an interesting stop. There wasn’t much information in English, and the exhibit was pretty small, but seeing the dresses was cool.
I dragged mom and dad through Takeshita Street. It was very crowded, but my parents still got a kick out of seeing the stores and fashion, although they rolled their eyes everytime I offered to buy us matching platform shoes for some reason. After a stop in Uniqlo, we headed to Shinjuku for lunch. We stopped at a random izakaya near the station that I unfortunately forgot the name of. We snapped some pictures of Godzilla and the 3D cat billboard before heading to Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden. Happy surprise that it was free admission for Greenery Day. There were a lot of people there, but it is a large park, so it wasn’t too crowded. Like the Meiji garden, most of the flowers weren’t in bloom yet, but it was still really pretty and nice to just be able to rest under the trees in the shade for a while.
After the garden, we head back towards Shibuya. We wandered around the scramble and main streets for a bit. I had a ticket to enter a pop up store at 5:15, so mom and dad had to wait outside while I got my goods. I got out with enough time for us to get to the Shibuya Sky building in time for our 6:20 entry. I would have liked to have gotten 6:00 tickets to see more of the sunset, but I was just happy to have gotten any tickets during dusk. It was still an incredible view, and it was a clear day so we could see Fuji in the distance. Mom and Dad were a bit overwhelmed by crowds at this point, so we headed back to the hotel and had dinner at a soba chain near the station, opposed to trying to find something in Shibuya. Mom and Dad were in bed before 9:00.
This was definitely the most crowded day we experienced during the trip. My parents said that while they don’t feel the need to ever go back to Shibuya or Shinjuku, they were happy that they had had the experience of seeing them, and don’t regret going, even with the crowds. I had originally planned Shibuya, then Shinjuku in the evening so we weren’t doubling back, but the garden closes late afternoon and it worked out with the evening Shibuya Sky tickets.
May 5th (Children’s Day)- Tokyo/Kyoto
(Hotel Sotetsu Fresa Inn Kyoto Kiyomizu Gojo-Connecting Twin Rooms)
Checked out of the hotel early and made our way to Tokyo Station. We had breakfast at a cafe in the basement, before dropping our backpacks in a locker and taking a walk around the Imperial Palace grounds. After we got our bags back, we grabbed some ekibens for lunch and caught the 10:30 shinkansen to Kyoto.
Because of the holiday and wanting us to be sitting on the Fuji side, these were the only shinkansen tickets I booked in advance. I booked through the JR west site, just under a month before. I had no problem using my Canadian mastercard to pay, and at that time there were still lots of seats available. It all worked out too as we had amazing weather and got a beautiful view of Fuji.
After arriving in Kyoto, we picked up my parents JR Kansai-Hiroshima passes. I am not eligible for one as a foreign resident, but they were definitely worth it for my parents, and if I planned better, we could have gotten more value out of them.
After dropping our stuff off at our hotel, we went to Kingaku-ji. The crowds weren’t as bad as I was expecting for mid afternoon during Golden Week and we thought the pavilion was very beautiful. After a vending machine ice cream we hopped on the bus to Arashiyama. The bamboo grove also was not nearly as crowded as I expected and we even had to empty spots to take pictures. Main street Arashiyama on the other hand, was very crowded, with a lot of tourists (foreign and local) having to walk on the road. We walked down to the Kimono Forest which was very cool and then headed out after that.
We planned on finding a restaurant in Kyoto Station for dinner, but as we were on the train back, we were delayed due to Kyoto Station being temporarily shut down to investigate a suspicious item. It turned out to just be a forgotten backpack but I think most trains were delayed about two hours. The delay sucked, but I guess it’s to be safe than sorry. (That’s probably easier to say as someone already in Kyoto vs one of the people who would have been stuck on an inbound shinkansen.)
After catching a replacement bus that was enroute to go near our hotel, we decided to bail on dinner at the station and find something closer to us. We ended up in a small and smokey but still tasty yakitori place before calling it a night.
May 6th (Substitute Holiday)- Kyoto
Waking up early again, we caught the train to Fushimi Inari. There was a small family restaurant on the main street leading up to the shrine that had just opened. (I think this was just after 8:00 am) We stopped there for breakfast before going up to the shrine. We got pretty far before Dad’s knees started bothering him. Fortunately on the hike down we passed a shrine dedicated to back and knee health, so Mom and I bought an omamori for him.
After that we headed to Kiyomizudera. I think this temple was my parents' favourite of all the shrines and temples we went to, minus the hills. We didn’t find the streets too crowded at this point but the hills and stairs did not help my parents' feet and knees. They did really enjoy walking through the temple when we got there, and we could have spent a lot more time here, but we had a lunch plans.
I booked us a 12:30 lunch reservation at Yakinikugyusho Shin. Normally I don’t bother too much with reservations when I travel but I was worried about the Golden Week crowds and I wanted to make sure we had at least one nice meal somewhere in Kyoto. I booked this through TableCheck. We all had different beef rice bowls and they were all delicious. The restaurant had a really cool traditional atmosphere too.
After that we wandered the area for a bit before heading to the Samurai Museum. I personally thought it was a bit overpriced for what it is, but our guide was funny and had a lot of information. We did enjoy the throwing stars experience at the end as well. We weren’t too keen on the optional samurai dress up experience so we opted out of that. We headed back to the hotel for a rest before heading out for dinner at a nearby burger place called Burger Eleven, which we were pretty happy with. Headed back to the hotel to pack and have an early night.
May 7th- Kyoto/Hiroshima
(Hotel The Knot Hiroshima-Triple Room)
We checked out of the hotel early in the morning after having our suitcases shipped to our Osaka hotel. Once again, really easy and worthwhile. After that we head to Nishiki Market for breakfast of tempura and seafood. We arrived as things were starting to open and not too crowded. After pursuing all the shops we bussed to Kyoto Station to head off to Hiroshima.
I had no idea how to use my parents' JR passes at the ticket machines, and since we would need both shinkansen tickets and limited express Haruka tickets to Shin-Osaka, I just decided to go straight to the ticket office and have them do it. They had English speaking staff, so it was really easy. We were able to get reserved seats together on the next train out.
We arrived in Hiroshima at our hotel around 2:00 pm. We went to drop off our backpacks, but the hotel actually let us check in early which was great. Then we toured around Hiroshima Castle and then Shukkeien Gardens. I feel like I could have spent hours in the garden, but Mom was dealing with some pretty intense blisters, so we walked around for a bit and fed the carps before heading back to the hotel. We had a drink at the hotel’s rooftop bar before dinner. The original plan was to walk to Okonomimura for dinner, but Mom’s feet weren’t up for it. We found a nearby restaurant called Hazaya, which was a great alternative. After dinner we grabbed some snacks and called it a night.
May 8th- Hiroshima/Osaka
(Hotel WBF Namba Motomachi-Two Double Rooms)
Up early again to visit the Peace Memorial Park and Museum. Ticket sales the day of started at 8:30 and we were first in line. It seems you can enter earlier with an e-ticket, which we could have bought on the spot, but we decided to wait the 10ish minutes till the counter opened. I won’t say much about the Museum other than it was very heavy, but incredibly well done. I highly recommend it. We beat a lot of the crowd, including most of the school tours that were arriving as we were leaving. After a small breakfast at the museum cafe we walked through the park and to the dome, then grabbed our bags from the hotel and headed to Osaka. Once again, did not want to fiddle around with the JR passes and ticket machines, so we went to the ticket office. We could have been on the next train out, but waited for the one after so we had time to grab lunch at the station.
We arrived in Osaka, checked in to the hotel, and headed to the Tempozan Wheel. The view was great, but the wind was quite strong, which scared my parents who are terrified of heights. This was in the afternoon but I imagine the night view would be amazing. After a little stroll around the area, we headed to Dotonburi for dinner. Mom and Dad weren’t too keen on takoyaki, which I was surprised by. They both decided they favoured Hiroshima-style okonomiyaki. I’m more for Osaka-style but I won’t say no to either. Did a little bit of souvenir shopping before heading back to the hotel for the night.
May 9th-Osaka/Hokkaido
We set off early for Osaka Castle. Enjoyed walking around the grounds and the surrounding park. I took some of this subreddit’s advice and didn’t go inside the castle. We had gone inside the Hiroshima Castle, which is also pretty museum-like, so we weren’t upset to miss this one.
After enjoying the morning, we made our way back to the hotel to get our suitcases, then caught the bus from Namba OCAT station to KIX airport. We had time for lunch before checking in to our flight to Chitose. I don’t know about the international terminal, but the food options on the domestic side at KIX are pretty minimal. Had an easy flight to Chitose where I was reunited with my car and drove us to my house for the night.
May 10th- Sapporo
(Hotel Quintessa Hotel Susukino 63-One Queen Room and One Double)
From here out the trip was a much slower and relaxing pace. Had a lazy morning before making our way to Sapporo by car. Checked into our hotel and did a little shopping near Sapporo station. Attended a Fighters game that evening, which was a great time! ES Con Field is a beautiful brand new stadium and has a lot of great food options. I don’t follow baseball much but we still all really enjoyed the atmosphere. The Fighters won which I am sure helped a lot. I know they’re not one of the super popular teams in Japan, but if you’re a baseball fan with a free evening or afternoon in Hokkaido, I think the stadium alone is worth seeing a game here for.
May 11th- Jozankei
(Ryokan Hana Momiji-Comfort Japanese-style Room)
Checked out of our hotel just before 10 a.m.. We walked down to Shiawase-no-Pancake for a fluffy pancake breakfast, before driving an hour to Jozankei. We had a reservation at the Hana Momiji ryokan. My parents both have tattoos, but wanted to try an onsen. I looked at a few ryokan options in Jozankei before picking this one. Any room with a private onsen was out of our budget, but Hana Momiji has several private baths that guests can book, so this was the best option for us. We first arrived and parked at the ryokan before wandering around the town.
We came across a small temple that just so happened to have a small cave you could walk through that was full of Kannon statues. A bit strange but very cool. There were still carp streamers up so we enjoyed seeing them over the river. We had lunch at a small ramen shop, did a little more souvenir shopping, then headed back to the ryokan to check in. Mom and Dad enjoyed the private bath before dinner, and I used the public bath on the top floor after dinner. It was a little crowded for the shower stations but for a while I had the outdoor bath all to myself which was grand. The ryokan’s kaiseki dinner was amazing but we weren’t too hungry from lunch, and the food just kept coming. The sukiyaki was my favourite. After I visited the onsen we relaxed in our room for the rest of the night.
May 12th- Otaru (Mother’s Day)
We woke up and had the buffet breakfast at the ryokan. The buffet had a lot of options but was a bit underwhelming compared to the kaiseki dinner. We checked out at 10 a.m. and continued to Otaru. Since it was Mother’s Day, my siblings and I agreed I was to organise something nice for Mom. I decided to take us to a glass blowing workshop. This might seem random for Japan, but for some reason, Otaru is well known for glass blowing and music boxes. We had an 11 a.m. reservation at Studio J-45. The shop is more on the outskirts of the city, but it was a beautiful little store, and the staff were so friendly and helpful. There were only three staff members and one of them spoke English well enough to explain everything to my parents. My mom made a flower vase, my dad made a wind-chime, and I made a cup. It was a really fun and easy process and all of our pieces came out beautifully. I think the best way to access this place is by car, but if that's an option for you and you’re looking for a unique experience, I highly recommend this studio! One thing to keep in mind is that the pieces need to cook in the oven after, so you’ll either need to be able to pick them up another day, or have somewhere in Japan they can be shipped to (for a fee I believe). I could have shipped to my house but I wanted to make sure Mom and Dad had them before they left.
After that we headed into downtown Otaru to meet some of my friends. There was a cruise ship docked this day so it was a bit more crowded than usual. We stopped in at the music box museum and then we all went for lunch together and had some delicious gyukatsu. We strolled down the rest of main street to the canal. At this point it was late afternoon and starting to rain. Most things in Otaru close pretty early anyway so we said goodbye to my friends and drove back to my town for the night.
May 13th- Home
Didn’t do much today. I worked a half day to save some PTO. Dad wanted BBQ for lunch so we went to a yakiniku place in the next town over, and then met one of my friends at Hamasushi for dinner (our usual go-to spot).
May 14th- Sapporo
(Via Inn Prime Sapporo Odori-Triple Room)
Last full day in Japan for my parents. Worked another half day in the morning. Took a detour to Otaru on the way to Sapporo to collect our glassware. Arrived in Sapporo and checked into the hotel, then had tough time trying to find overnight parking. For our last dinner I booked a reservation in Kessel Hall at the Sapporo Beer Garden. (Booked online through their website.) Didn’t do all you can eat Ghenhis Khan (mutton), because as we were heading out my dad mentioned he doesn’t like lamb. 🤦So he had a seafood platter, mom had a sausage dish, and I ordered some lamb a la carte. Sure enough, he tried a piece of mine and made me order another plate of it. We enjoyed the beer and dessert as well, then went back to our hotel. The hotel had a public bath which I enjoyed that evening before heading to bed.
May 15th-Home
Woke up early to drive Mom and Dad to Shin-Chitose for their 10 a.m. flight to Narita. This would have given them plenty of time to get to their 4 p.m. flight to Vancouver, but just to be safe, AirCanada kindly delayed the flight till 8 p.m. so they could spend half a day in Narita.
Some closing thoughts:
Golden Week Crowds- I was really expecting the worst when it came to the crowds, especially in Kyoto, but I honestly didn’t find them to be that bad. Maybe I just got lucky but other than the day in Shinjuku and Shibuya, I never felt I was being “herded” anywhere. At Kinkakuji, we would maybe have to wait a minute to get a spot at the fence for pictures but it was never shoulder to shoulder like I was expecting. Kiyomizudera was really only crowded on the walk down, especially when cars were passing. We didn’t go to any viral restaurants, but we never had to wait more than 10ish minutes to be seated anywhere. It was probably more a case of right time, right place, but if you end up stuck with a Japan trip planned during Golden Week, I think as long as you’re patient and well planned, you can still have a really nice trip.
-Parents used Sakura mobile esims. It took us a couple tries to get the access point info input correctly but once we did, they had no problems.
-Didn’t want to deal with tracking down IC cards in Tokyo (we all have androids) so I brought two Kitaca cards from Hokkaido that they were able to use everywhere we went.
-Like I mentioned, I could have gotten more value out of the JR Kansai-Hiroshima pass had I planned better. Ex: I know you can use them on the express train from Osaka to KIX. Since our hotel was in Namba we weren’t anywhere convenient to catch it, and I was worried we would haul our luggage to Osaka station, only to not be able to find enough lockers to put our stuff in. It was just easier to leave our bags at the hotel, come back, then take the nearby limousine bus. If I did this again using these passes, I would have booked our hotel closer to Osaka station. That said, using the passes just to go from Kyoto to Hiroshima to Osaka already saved my parents about 5k yen each.
-Other than the ryokan, which I booked through their site, all our hotels were booked through Agoda.
-I mentioned Mom had blisters. She had gotten really good shoes, but it was her socks that caused all the problems with the toe seams rubbing the wrong way. Make sure if you’re investing in good shoes, you have some good socks to go with them.
-Overall I think it was a really good trip. It was tiring but fun to tour my parents around Japan. It looks like a lot very quickly, but we got through everything I had put on our itinerary, and didn’t feel rushed anywhere, other than our Kyoto lunch reservation. My parents enjoyed the peacefulness of Hiroshima the most, and we would have liked to see Miyajima if we had time, so should they come back, that is where they would probably visit again.
If you made it through this whole thing, thank you for reading, I hope you enjoyed or found this helpful!

2024.05.28 03:04 Weary-Gas-7487 Does depop shadowban if you have an open dispute for an item?

I sold some shorts on the 7th and they were delivered the 14th, the girls claims she hasn’t gotten them. Depop sided with me for the first dispute so she opened another and depop hasn’t resolved it yet, and my sales and likes have been down since. Was just curious if there’s any correlation between the open dispute and my sales going down. Thank you in advance!

2024.05.28 01:35 TheBreakUp2013 AITA for leveraging my landlord after she didn’t play nice at first?

My wife and I have a mild disagreement on this one, so your input is most appreciated.
For background, we are early-40’s xillenials. We are fortunate in that we both have good jobs making high-6 figures combined and we got into the real estate market 20 years ago, so we have ridden the wave up, then down, then way up.
In the summer of 2023 we moved from one HCoL city to another. We sold our house and a lot we had purchased for development and realized a substantial amount of cash, which made the move easy and allowed us to be a bit picky when selecting a new house.
We found a neighborhood we loved, but there were absolutely no houses for sale in that ‘hood when it came time for us to move. Fortunately, a rental was available. Given that the neighborhood was popular, the house was good-sized, and that there was absolutely nothing for sale, we snatched it up. It was just over 4,000 sf and the rent was $6,000 per month.
We signed a 1 year lease expiring August 1, 2024, with the ability for us to terminate upon 90 days’ notice. Flash forward to December of 2023 and, after a few misses and a couple lost bidding wars, we found the perfect house and had an offer accepted.
We gave our 90-day notice to the landlord which resulted in a lease termination date of March 30, 2024. We were scheduled to close on the new house on January 31, 2024, so we would have some overlap. Though the houses were in the same neighborhood and only 1 kilometer apart, this would give us some time to move out and get some light remodeling work done in the new house. My wife and I figured it would only take us 5 to 15 days max to comfortably make the move. Obviously, we could haul ass and get it done in a day.
Our landlord, who we’ll call Karen (side note: I have a friend named Karen who is an awesome person - I feel sorry that she has a meme name), decided to sell our rental rather than find new tenants. The market was still exceptionally strong. So, she marketed the property in early-January 2024.
She got a strong nibble right away and asked if we would be able to move out on February 15th. We said no problem and were happy to save the almost $9,000 in rent. Well that fell through and she continued to market the property. Despite the hot market, her price and some layout issues with the rental made finding a buyer challenging.
Keep in mind that, other than potentially saving $6,000 per month in rent, we had no financial incentive to sell the house. Also, our lease said we did not have to permit showings until the last 30 days of the term, or March 1st in this case. Still, to save the rent and to help Karen strike while the market was hot, we permitted showings when requested.
We accommodated 19 of the 20 showings in the first 10 days on the market. Despite the fact that this interfered with our life (we have 1 young child), Karen earned her name and freaked out at the 1 showing out of 20’we couldn’t accommodate. She threatened to default us under our lease (for what, I have know idea), and acted entitled to enter or show the property at any time even though we had a valid lease. She refused to acknowledge the expense and inconvenience we undertook to accommodate 19 showings.
I was a real estate attorney early in my career before I moved to the business side of things, so I was easily able to push back on Karen’s rantings. She became slightly more reasonable (but still didn’t lift a finger to sell her own house) and, after another couple of weeks, she accepted an offer to sell the property.
According ti Karen, the buyers wanted possession on February 21st. So, in late-January, with our own closing only days away, we signed an agreement to terminate our lease effective February 19th. This saved us $8,000 in rent and Karen got her sale. She did insist on retaining our security deposit until she confirmed the property was in the condition required by the lease at the end of the term despite her agent telling her the property was in excellent condition, but I even understood that.
The problem came when we tried to book cleaners for the rental for February 19th. Karen told us that she had actually scheduled closing with her buyers for February 14th with possesion the next day knowing we planned to be out by the 15th. Karen, being the entitled Karen she was, had gotten greedy and tried to squeeze another week of rent out of us. She told us closing had to occur on the 14th because the buyers were coming from out of state. Our failure to vacate and turn over keys before the 21st would “jeopardize the entire deal.”
This pissed me off. We could easily accomplish our light remodel in our new place, and be out by the 14th, but she had tried to screw us and double dip to get an extra week’s rent. Why? No idea, other than greed and entitlement.
So, I played hardball. She threw out the same tired legal threats. She backtracked when we told her, “Cool, here’s our attorney’s name. Who’s yours? Have him call ours and they can work it out.” She asked if we could amend the agreement to February 13th, so she would have time to clean before closing.
Here’s where I may be the ah. . Ordinarily, I would have said yes. Little inconvenience to help another person and a fair price adjustment? Of course. But, because she tried to screw us, I screwed back. I asked for our security deposit back to adjust the date. I asked to pro-rate rent through the 13th. Both fair given I could not longer trust her. I also asked for an additional $5,000 to compensate for the time we spent working with her. Maybe not so fair.
She went insane. Multiple calls and texts. Legal threats. I stayed calmed and told her if she persisted we could take this to attorneys, we’d pay rent through the 21st and she could risk losing the sale. I told her 1 more threat would result in blocking and we would insist on attorneys.
She agreed to my terms. As a last punishment, I told her I wanted the $5k in cash and I wanted her, not her husband, to deliver it.
I drew up the agreement, she signed and brought the money. It as so f’ing satisfying.
My wife says i may have been too tough on Karen. So I ask you good people: AITA?

2024.05.27 23:21 Representative-Fee65 The Los Angeles Angels Rebuild: Part 1 (The Beginning)

Introduction
The Los Angeles Angels are as close to rock bottom as you can get. They are coming off of a 73 win season. They just lost one of their 2 star players to their in-town rival Dodgers. They have probably the worst farm system in the MLB (28th according to OOTP, but I don’t agree with that). In a desperation, they hired a 15 year old (me) to be the GM/Manager of the Angels, in hope to somehow get out of this hole. The owner Arturo Moreno has given me goals for this rebuild that I must achieve or I have failed:
Play close to .500 ball (2024) Upgrade at First Base (2024) Acquire a Power hitter (2026) Build a top-6 minor league system (2028) Increase fan interest (2025) Keep building the team up to reach the playoffs (2029)
The First Order of Business
My first action as manager is to try to start this team from scratch. I plan to trade almost as many players over 25 (not Mike Trout or recently acquired) away as possible and try to hit the reset button on the team. I will be listing every trade made below:
The Los Angeles Angels trade 30 year old LF Taylor Ward and 24 year old minor league 1B Sonny DiChiara to St. Louis, getting 24 year old minor league CF Michael Siani in return.
The Los Angeles Angels trade 28 year old LF Jason Martin, 28 year old 2B Michael Stefanic, 25 year old minor league C Myles Emmerson, 25 year old minor league C Anthony Mulrine, 27 year old RHP Griffin Canning, and 26 year old RHP Davis Daniel to the Detroit Tigers, getting 35 year old RF Mark Canha, 24 year old minor league C Eliezer Alfonzo, and 24 year old minor league 3B Wenceel Perez in return.
The Los Angeles Angels trade 37 year old RHP Luis Garcia and 34 year old RHP Jose Cisneros to the Houston Astros for 33 year old RHP Rafael Montero, 26 year old minor league RHP Jayden Murray, and 25 year old minor league RHP Logan VanWey.
The Los Angeles Angels trade 35 year old minor league LHP Adam Kolarek, 35 year old minor league LHP Drew Pomeranz, 24 year old minor league RHP Brett Kerry, 21 year old minor league RHP Jorge Marcheco, 23 year old minor league RHP Jack Kochanowicz, 18 year old minor league CF Nelson Rada, and 24 year old minor league RF Jo Adell to the New York Mets for 24 year old 3B Mark Vientos and 20 year old minor league CF Nick Morabito.
The New Roster
Pitching:
  1. Patrick Sandoval
  2. Reid Detmers
  3. Tyler Anderson
  4. Jose Suarez
  5. Ben Joyce (New Starter)
EmSP: Andrew Wantz Spe: Rafael Montero (vs RHB) LR: Zach Plesac MR: Jose Soriano SU: Robert Stephenson SU: Matt Moore CL: Carlos Estevez
Starters:
C: Logan O’Hoppe (9th) 1B: Mark Canha (14th) 2B: Brandon Drury (18th) 3B: Anthony Rendon (25th) SS: Zach Neto (16th) LF: Mike Trout (3rd) CF: Michael Siani (28th) RF: Mickey Moniak (21st) DH: Miguel Sano
Notable Backups:
Nolan Schanuel (1B/LF/RF) Luis Rengifo (2B/3B/SS/LF/RF) Hunter Dozier (1B/3B/LF/RF) Matt Thais (C/1B/3B) Chad Wallach (C)
I honestly can’t wait for this season. The farm system might not be good yet but some of the guys we traded for can instantly contribute to the team around Mike Trout. I don’t expect us to make it to October, but flirting with .500 should be a realistic goal for this team.
I’ll post the next part when Season 1 is done!

Provides that firearms purchaser identification card is valid for four years; requires training prior to issuance of firearms cards and handgun purchase permits; revises procedures for passing of firearms to heir or legatee.
"1. N.J.S.2C:58-3 is amended to read as follows:"
" ~(1) Upon the death of the owner of a firearm, the administrator or executor of the estate who does not possess a valid firearms purchaser identification card or permit to purchase a handgun shall surrender custody of the firearm within 30 days to the chief law enforcement officer of the municipality in which the decedent resided or, if the municipality does not have a police department or force, the superintendent. The chief law enforcement officer or superintendent, as appropriate, shall retain custody of the firearm until the heir or legatee obtains a valid permit to purchase a handgun or firearms purchaser identification card. If the heir or legatee does not obtain a permit to purchase a handgun or firearms purchaser identification card, the heir or legatee shall sell the firearm to a licensed retail dealer or arrange for the sale of the firearm by the licensed retail dealer. The licensed retail dealer shall provide the heir or legatee with a receipt and shall record the date of surrender, the name of the heir or legatee, and the serial number, manufacturer, and model of the surrendered firearm.~"
So if your kids have any mental health treatment they will have to check yes and go thru the forensic clearance or extra letters if they check yes on FPIC app to get your collection post A843 passing. Democrats are making sure collections get destroyed/confiscated and firearms ownership does not move on to the next generation without a lengthy life investigation which in most cases gets delayed illegally, and costly permits. Also 30 days is absurd and malicious, Canada which has no right to bear arms allows heirs 6 months to get firearms permits and a will functions as their gun permit for 6 months. We are becoming more draconian than countries with no right to bear arms. If you have inherited guns and no FPIC expect to hear show me your papers one day when your guns are legal because you are a heir under current law, either to join a range or in a police interaction then the burden of proof is on you to prove you are a legal heir under current law. Please email write and call your assembly people and senators to stop this draconian bill or if you have a collection to pass to family when you die and don't want them to have to pay money and be investigated to receive it.

2024.05.27 19:56 The-Last-Despot Project Ceasar Ideas I have!

INTRODUCTION
This is going to be long, but so too has the section of my life dedicated to Paradox grand strategy. I wouldn't write this labor of love if I hadn't devoted over 1000 hours to the sweeping years of Eu4, the dramatic global conflict of Hoi4, the fantasy dreams in Ck2 AGOT. The Alien conquests of Stellaris, the economic management of Vicky, and surely in the future, the wonders of Eu5 and project Caesar. With this out of the way, the following is a winding list of suggestions I would have for the game, each with specific tailored ideas in mind. These are for gameplay balance and immersion and realism reasons, and should add a unique flavor and challenge to Eu5 that did not exist in Eu4 whatsoever. The first addresses one of my favorite Eu4 nations, Burgundy, and how it's starting situation could be balanced through flavor and events to allow for a fun playthrough with realistic agency. This is inherently tied to both the 100 years war as a mechanic, and to the way polities should and shouldn't be able to gain titles in the HRE. The next is an addition regarding historical rulers amongst major nations for flavor, which would also benefit a nation such as Burgundy, but would also add depth and immersion to the other major players during the 500 years between the 14th and 19th centuries. I also apply the proposed 100 years war mechanic to other similar rivalries in history that could benefit from such a "template", to justify the coding require, and add an immersive and dynamic mid game that simulated rivalries while preventing wanton blobbing. The last is a simple historical addition, that would make new world play throughs incredibly challenging, but would also add important historical context to the Columbian exchange. Without further ado:
For Burgundy:
The major challenge for them will be allowing for the agency that Burgundy had during this time period, while maintaining the sovereign integrity of both the French Kingdom and the HRE. Like, how do you allow for Burgundy to pick up titles in the HRE and France while disallowing bordering states like Aragon and Poland from doing the same? How can the Emperor of the HRE and French King pick and choose who can do what within their imaginary borders?
The best I could see is a harder distinguishing line between Duchy and Kingdom, with large ramifications for going between one and the other. Even at the height of the Bold's hold over Burgundy, the Low countries, and a smattering of duchies in between including Luxembourg, he still owed fealty to both the HRE and French King. Paid dues, lip service, and owed his power to them, though they also could not simply carve up his realm without answering themselves to every other HRE Prince and French Noble. That dynamic is so damn hard to do without the titles that CK2 and 3 include, but those same titles would be a completely useless mechanic that becomes largely defunct after the peerage system and reforms of the 15th century onwards (save for the HRE for a longer time). When did France officially get a handle on its own Lords? Is such a situation dynamic? England did it far sooner after the war of the roses and glorious revolution, will that be simulated through events and the like?
Clearly, it is imperative that agency is retained, and wars do not have to be joined by less integrated noble subjects of a King at game start. Ludy, like him or hate him, made an incredibly important connection with Flanders and Brittany for this exact same reason. Both owed fealty to the French King, and yet the 100 years war saw both quickly become functionally independent for a century. Maybe the more important question regarding all of this, is can Eu5 support a dual French king situation going into the 100 years war? The English choice, and the French one? I for one am going to make some bold suggestions, things that might be unpopular and will probably never come to pass.
A Unique 100 years war mechanic:
For one, I think the 100 years war should come with a completely unique mechanic and UI for as long as the dynastic struggle continues. There should be an English and French faction, kind of like the way countries could choose a side in the reformation in Eu4, which played into alliances during the league war. This however should be more dynamic. For one, both the English and French should be able to offer boons to groups that join their side during this conflict, to try and pry countries away from the other. "Incidents" should occur to spur on fighting, based around limited goals at first, and as a meter ticks up those objectives can grow in scope. This could be manipulated to go quicker or slower based on player interaction. So it could be over Aquitane or some provinces at first, and grow to be the Union between France and England, or remain a shuffling of provinces until some conditions are met. Duchies and qualifying powers (Allies of either side and the like) could join and leave the war at will, with white peace if they exit a current "crisis" early. In the meantime, the varying French vassals can fall in line or betray their King at will, but subject to various modifiers tied to their integration to the crown, with the AI being less likely to betray the French King if they themselves are simply a holding of of the French royal family. With this, Burgundy would be able to join the English often during the 100 years war, but play the balance of power as they did by joining the French at opportune moments. Meanwhile, as long as the event goes on, they are independent, but tied to the others in a defensive pact if an outside power declared war on them.
HRE Titles, Outside Titles:
Meanwhile, if you have sufficient relations with the Emperor of the HRE, and are less than a kingdom rank, you can "gain a ducal title in the HRE". This would be a license of sorts to gain minor titles in the HRE, to a limited extent. How exactly this could be limited is complicated and could involve the justification of the war, permission from the Emperor, or a certain level of AE or infamy from the target nation. It could also be through marriage networks that are better tracked, and a better fleshed out background calculation of dynastic claims that do not only involve PUs. Perhaps even a more dynamic system of disenfranchised lords going to other houses for help in reclaiming their seat, with some rewards for the nation that helps in doing so with a unique CB. Either way, some sort of achievable "IN" with the HRE, that allows for limited gains from within its borders, and a separate sort of tag for the lands you take within the HRE. Perhaps an off-color of your own, with its own levies, but they are inherently tied under you, you have control over both, and for simplicity's sake everything down to estates and interaction remain tied together. The other half however would be a part of the HRE, and would represent more than a simple province modifier. The other half would also be represented in the HRE screen, and would make you eligible for interactions within the Empire.
BURGUNDY Summary:
Super complicated for both systems, and completely unlikely. But with something like this, Burgundy's rise would be adequately simulated, while outside Kingdoms would be precluded from simply entering into the HRE and gobbling up tags. You have to be a duchy, with limitations in place, and would be under the HRE Emperor, paying them in taxes and perhaps prestige for membership. A Kingdom simply couldn't, wouldn't do this deal. If this causes duchies in the balkans for example, or Italy to do the same, I see no problem there. Everywhere else it is Kingdoms that border the Empire. A distance and culture/religion limitation would prevent others. Principalities could be included, it would actually be funny if Theodoro or someone like that could somehow finagle HRE membership and take on titles within the Empire. Sounds fun actually.
The "Historical Rivalry" Made Into a Mechanic
For the 100 years war this would make for a dynamic 100 years of conflict and struggle, and incidents would be far more interesting than random war declarations through events and the like. An event could give background to the impending "incident", and makes for very rewarding player interaction. This sort of system is also worth coding, and the same style can be used for countless slow burning long conflicts that existed in history. A similar sort could be used for the border between the steppes and China, could even come into existence between the BYZ/Ottos and Persia if both come back to strength. This is too ambitious, but imagine if you finally restore Balkans and Anatolian Byz, only to have a rival Persia to the east, and to go "oh shit..." as the event "Rivalry with the Persians restored" flares up, and you have to deal with incidents over time instead of simply stomping them with opportune wars. Same as Ottos if you do the same. Or Spain and France if both become colonial powers that are rivaled. Little objectives like that would make the mid game so fresh and balanced too. This turns historical rivalries between bordering nations into a back in forth that can persist for the decades, centuries that such rivalries existed in real life. Goals can be limited or expanded depending on the animosity between the powers at the time, and the ambitions of either Monarch/leader. In quieter times, this could be simple border conflicts over a fort, or a single location even. If cranked up to a full on crisis, this could be where the Spanish Armada is built, where armies go deep into the others' territory, and goals include deposing the opposing leader, balkanizing a longtime enemy, or taking wide swaths of land for oneself. If "won", completely defeating an opponent in such a way could have a lasting boon to a PP equivalent, longtime prestige/legitimacy bonuses, and contentment from the estates for a time. They could be tweaked to ensure that a player is not completely locked into artificial limiters on expansion, but limiting enough that blobbing is simply not possible. It could be tied into markets and trade goods, premises for the conflicts could include control over a good outside of both's territory. This, to me, is far more interesting and dynamic than declaring war over and over again for conquest, "holy war" being used for the 1000th time, and peace deals that are simply too arbitrary and unrealistic. Eu5 could use this sort of mechanic to conquer the midgame slump so many games fall into. Making it adaptable to longtime rivalries adds an important personal touch to every game. It turns head canon ("I have been rivals with this nation for 200 years, we must HATE each other but have never gone to war") into a lasting source of conflict and strategy. The impetus for renewed struggle between you and your enemy could come from a scornful insult, a set of factors being triggered, perhaps a dynastic struggle in an important buffer state. I for one, would love this addition.
Smaller Things, #1: A Historical Rulers Toggle:
While unlikely to be included, it would be a nice touch if there was a button to press in the setup menu to activate historical rulers. Perhaps this list could be limited to only the most important players in the world, balanced between the continents and based on available data so that none could say one group is more favored than another. It then would provide the nations with the rulers they had historically for the same amount of time, for role play reasons. This way, you could get the Bold guaranteed by playing as Burgundy, and Mehmed and the Magnificent if playing as the Ottos, Peter and Catherine as Russia, Elizabeth as England etc. From the Sun King to the worst of the Louis, from Charles of Spain to the worst later Spanish monarchs. I feel like otherwise you would miss so many of the great rulers during this time period, and events can only go so far. It would probably be harder to have an event for every significant ruler that you want the player to have the option of playing besides. This could be extended to shorter lived polities like Burgundy, and allow you to play the Bold for role playing reasons at least. Moctezuma for the Aztecs, Pachacuti for the Incas, the list goes on. Again, this has been done before with events, this is simply ensuring that it occurs for the best documented nations during this time period, across the major polities. You could use your historical knowledge to strike when you know your enemy has a weak ruler, you could know to be patient when they have come into a legendary administration. Fighting the Ottos could be tempered by knowing that Sulieman is coming to the throne, and that they are about to be unstoppable for a time. Hell, you could prepare all of your defenses as Mehmed ascends, as the boy dreams of grand conquest. Or, prepare your navy and armies as the inbred Carlos II ascends the Spanish throne, unable to do much of anything in the face of crisis.
"Smaller Things" #2: Apocalypse in the New World:
I believe that at times, balance should come second to realism and immersion. One such time that I feel very strongly about is what occurred when the first thrice damned mosquitoes made the transit from the jungles of equatorial Africa to the New world. It was this transit that shaped wide swaths of human history, and by all accounts caused for one of the greatest losses of human life in history. No Eu title has come close to trying to simulate what occurred, and with the incoming population mechanic I believe there is no greater time to do so. Plagues have been simulated before, and the black death in Crusader Kings games adds a dramatic, immersive catastrophe that must be endured, one that could take important rulers at the drop of a hat. Well, imagine the black death, except it was now joined by the great reapers of humanity, all in unison, all striking at the non-immune. West Nile, Smallpox, The Plague, Scarlet Fever, Malaria, Cholera, Typhus, Tuberculosis, Measles, and more slammed into native populations without warning, and with overwhelming strength. This was a millennia-old arms race striking the unarmed.
The losses of life here cannot be unstated. It is likely that over 55 million people died in the centuries following the European arrival, and even that number could very well be a low end estimate. It is simply impossible to know for sure, but the numbers are harrowing. Take the fact that 700 thousand natives lived in Florida upon the first encounter with Europeans, and that in the aftermath perhaps 5 thousand lived in the same area. This of course was the fault of some diseases more than others, hence the mention of the mosquito. Malaria specifically went on to make the tropical regions of the new world nigh-inhospitable for natives and Europeans alike, where before such was not the case. Areas where Malaria could gestate and became dependent on African slavery specifically because of this turn of reality, and accidental release of humanity's most feared biological weapon. The Spanish conquest of mesoamerica and the Incan Empire both depended entirely on the disease epidemics that followed the Europeans west. Without them, Spain would have entirely been rebuffed. With them, native leaders were literally too weak and divided to fight back for a prolonged period of time. It would be an injustice to not include this important historical narrative into the game, an event so important and influential that it is likely partially responsible for a global cooling in temperatures. It is a lesson in the true devastation wrought by Europeans, both the intentional and unintentional.
Still Rambling... (I have obsessed over this specific topic greatly...)
As a player in the New World, this of course would make European contact a feared harbinger of disaster. While contact would mean the possibility of westernization and eventual parity and revenge against them, it would also mean the functional end of your economy for decades, and careful conservation of resources to withstand the physical and biological siege on your people. Leaders could drop dead from disease in a moment, civil wars could trigger as claimants come and go. Your limited resources would be forced to hold the line from opportunists, conquistadors, and explorers alike. This is the hand that the native groups historically had to endure. This is what was not shown in the previous games. Hell, it is almost insulting (I am of partial Taino background) that so many polities are left out as "uncolonized/settled" land entirely, when the reality was that these areas were chock full of people, settlement, and tribes of sufficient numbers to call the land "settled", before the European contact. The problem was that these areas of first contact were literally wiped out by disease, and therefore ceased to exist in united strength upon contact. Many of the depicted tripes would have endured the same fate too, if they happened to be in Cuba or Florida, instead of the American interior or the Andes. This however is of course not something I could push for in the game regardless. You cannot just add tags to eliminate them as the Europeans show up, though it would look appropriately tragic if done well. The simulated population however should depict what actually happened. Eu4 is very weird in this respect, as it tried to an extent to include aspects of this in the original release, but over the years has completely overcompensated in native strength. It has left the new world almost incolonizable, which is simply strange and not rewarding for both player and historical value.
It should also be noted that Europeans should similarly struggle upon the intrusion of malaria into the new world. In malaria zones, European colonists should accurately be devastated by plague outbreaks, armies should have to be "seasoned", or tragically endure partial elimination upon landing in the new world. This should be similar in the interiors of Africa, which were similarly inhospitable to Europeans prior to the advent of important medicinal technology. Disease greatly influenced human history, and simply should not be left out, much as the black death was included in crusader kings.
CONCLUSION:
That is the end of my long winded rant, and I am simply happy to have said my piece on the upcoming project Caesar. No matter what comes to pass, it already looks like an incredible sequel to an incredible series, and does seem to have far more content than I previously suspected it would. If anyone actually read through this manifesto, please let me know what you think, I would love to discuss any of this! I WILL be playing Eu5 in this order, so you know what kind of person I am: Trebizond, BYZ, Venice, Burgundy, Aragon, Ethiopia, and Portugal in that order.

2024.05.27 18:29 DankJuiceYT Route tips for THIS SUNDAY please! (33 Day trip)

Interrail planner link
Me and 3 friends are interrailing beginning June 2nd (this sunday) Wondering if we could get route recommendations and tips for the places we are planning! (it's scarily close and I want to be as prepared as possible)
we all have a 10-day 2-month Eurail pass, which we are worried we won't use all the destinations for, so want to use trains as much as possible. we bought this as during the spring sale this seemed to be the best deal.
Note: some destinations we have not fully decided on. (sections highlighted in the post) This means that we can adjust the different days we are potentially there. Additionally, or flights to Berlin and flight back from Geneva are booked, which gives us exactly 33 days.
Additional questions: I would like to know what the best way to get from the Balkans to Bari, Italy would be. Our current options are ferry from Budva, durrës, or Dubrovnik. we will opt for whatever is cheapest / preferably a night ferry as this gives us one less hostel to pay for.
Let me know if you have any more questions and i'd be more than happy to respond to them.
OUR ROUTE:
Thanks in advance guys! :))

2024.05.27 10:34 Throwawayworkcrap Realtor celebrates with my ex.

My ex asked me to relocate to Hawaii, with our son, for his job last year. We get along fairly well and I have lived in Hawaii before, so it wasn’t a big deal to me.
He suggested his friend to handle the sale of both homes. (He does not own my home, has never owned my home & we were never married.) The realtor is his bosses sister in law. His boss owns the company and wanted my ex to expand that company to Hawaii. I’ve known the family for many years, but had not personally met her.
My house was listed a month later on April 14th and I was temporarily residing with my son’s dad. After listing the home and finding a buyer, my ex went to the court and got an emergency order preventing me from having any custody. But he didn’t tell me, he kept it a secret.
I was starting to feel uneasy about things (though I was kept in the dark) and decided I didn’t want to move anymore. Weird things were happening that weren’t adding up.
On April 30th the buyers hadn’t gotten everything together so I was told I had to sign an extension. Both me and my mother weren’t willing to, but the realtor continued telling me that I had to sign it or I would be sued for 20% of the cost of the home. She told me she didn’t want to disappoint the buyer and she didn’t want me to get sued.
On May 1st we both reluctantly signed. Yes I realize this makes no sense now, but I figured I didn’t know better than an experienced realtor. Shortly after signing the extension my son’s dad disappeared with our child.
On May 2nd I found out about the emergency order and was forced to leave with nowhere to go.
On May 7th the realtor, his friend, said we had to sign another extension or be forced to pay the 20%. She told me the buyer can force the sell if they want to anyways. She had expressed to us that she was doing everything she could to help the buyer close on time, despite me sharing that I would be homeless. Her response to me was “you can sleep on an air mattress at the house until May 9th and then live in a hotel for awhile.” She told me she felt bad for the buyer because he had already told the apartment complex he was moving & he had nowhere else to go.
The buyers were not ready on time, and we told her we would deal with it, but I was refusing to sign anything else. During this time my mom agreed to pay her the full closing cost $6,125, in hopes that she would help us and not the buyer anymore.
A month later we subpoenaed the text messages between my son’s dad and the realtor. I was floored. They were celebrating and working together to get me to sign documents. My ex told the realtor that he didn’t think I was going to sign the extension on the 1st… her response “bad news, she isn’t obligated to sign.” Something she never told me. After coercing signatures my ex said “Awesome!!!” And the realtor sent heart emojis. These messages continue through the 10th.
After reviewing the timeline, messages and documents it is abundantly clear that they set me up to lose everything so that her families company could expand to Hawaii and my son’s dad could move without me. I couldn’t have fought his accusations and battled homelessness at the same time. I couldn’t have stopped him.
By the grace of god I was able to keep my home & sitting here today I have my son back with me.
I have text messages, but I am not sure if I can post them here. I plan on reporting her this coming Friday after the final custody trial. (She is testifying on Tuesday.) What else can I do to have her license taken for what she has done to me. I feel robbed and she shouldn’t be able to victimize more clients.

Billboard's Woman of the Decade award: Revisiting Taylor's speech
As discussed in my most recent post, I’m continuing my journey of revisiting Taylor’s past. I think it is one of the keys to understanding the story Taylor tried to tell before and the story she is telling today.
Also, in the words of the Manuscript:
And the years passed
Like scenes of a show
The Professor said to write what you know
Lookin' backwards
Might be the only way to move forward
Before I get to the speech, a reminder on some events that took place before the Woman of the Decade award was given to Taylor.
Speech context
Taylor announced her plan to rerecord her first six albums on August 21, 2109 - ✌🏻days before Lover was released.
The Billboard Woman of the Decade ceremony took place on December 12, 2109. AKA, the night before Taylor turned 30. I mentioned in my AMA post that I’m not sure when these types of awards are decided, but I can’t help thinking about what could have been if this award was given to Taylor post coming out. And what that might have looked like.
In the lead up to the AMAs, Taylor had a public battle with both SBs because they wouldn’t grant her permission to sing any songs from her first six albums when she performed at the awards show.
On November 14th, Taylor tweeted about the fight and then, rightly or wrongly, Taylor asked her fans to let the SBs know how they felt about that decision. Swifties definitely answered that call.
Four days later, Big Machine granted her permission to perform any song she wanted - at least for that one night. How lucky for her 🙄
Speech Analysis
In the spirit of full disclosure, what first caught my eye about Taylor’s speech is her outfit. While yes, I do think she looks amazing lol, I thought her outfit was purple which would have pointed to my theory that “Speak Now connects to everything”, but my research tells me the outfit is a dark blue.
(Unhinged 🤡 theory: maybe the outfit really is purple, and this is the origin of the Taylor trying to convince us that her blood in the Anti-Hero video is midnight blue instead of glittery purple, hahahaha)
That being said, even though the outfit isn’t purple, I want to note that her hair is in a braid. There have been a lot of theories about what braids can mean, or what Taylor is trying to signal when she wears one. Braids have been showing up for a while. For the purposes of this look back, I want to point a recent post from u/Kit10phish.
Specifically this part of what they wrote:
I subscribe to the braid theory Braded-Lyrics: Each song has many different strands woven together: Muse, music industry, fans, sometimes historical events or mythology.
I definitely agree with this take, and I also think the theory extends to more than lyrics. I think there is a lot the Billboard’s Woman of the Decade speech that (either planned or not), foreshadows and ties together things we’ve seen play out over the last 5 years.
We know at this point that Taylor had decided to rerecord her first six albums. I also think Ms. Mastermind had a plan for how she thought it would play out and also had a plan to make sure she felt she could come out at the end ,or, within the rerecording process. Obviously COVID threw a wrench into those plans - I don’t think folklore and evermore were planned. I don’t even necessarily believe that she had Midnights or TTPD fully formed at this point, but I do think she had some idea of what she wanted to do.
With all of that in mind, let’s get to the speech. If you want to read a transcript of it, you can here.
I’m not going to go through everything, instead I will highlight what I think is relevant. If you think I’ve missed anything, feel free to let me know! When sharing quotes, I will be bolding certain parts for emphasis.
I was going to go chronologically at first, but I want discuss at the top what I think is a big elephant in the room given TK’s response to the shitty comments his teammate made.
Here is what TK said:
“I call him Harry, I might be the only person who calls him Harry,” he said. “That just tells you, I mean, I’ve known him for seven-plus, eight-plus years and I cherish him as a teammate… He’s treated friends and family that I’ve introduced to him with nothing but respect and kindness and that’s how he treats everyone.”
He acknowledged that when it came to what Butker said at the commencement, those were the football kicker’s “views”. Travis also clarified that while he didn’t have the same beliefs as Butker, he wouldn’t scrutinize his friend for his views.
“I can’t say I agree with the majority of it, or just about any of it, outside of just him loving his family or his kids,” he continued. “And I don’t think I should judge him by his views, especially his religious views of how he goes about life. That’s just not who I am.”
And here is what Taylor said about Scooter Braun during her Woman of the Decade speech
I’m fairly certain he knew exactly how I would feel about it though. And let me just say that the definition of the toxic male privilege in our industry is people saying, ‘But he’s always been nice to me,’ when I’m raising valid concerns about artists and their rights to own their music. And of course he’s nice to you. If you’re in this room, you have something he needs.
I don’t expect Taylor to have a response to what TK said - and I don’t even believe she should be held accountable for what he said, a stance I’ve maintained since the MH era. Men need to be held accountable for what they say, not the women in their life - buuuuuuuuuuuuut, with all that in mind, I hope Taylor remembers making this speech because her boy is doing exactly what she called out.
Almost word for word.
I think Taylor would do well to remember what she said when she stood on a stage calling out the people in her life who said that about SB. And I hope she is taking TK to task for his lack of courage.
I don’t think the controversy with TK’s teammate is manufactured to play into Taylor’s narrative, but I do think if Taylor does distance herself from him because of this, I would be OK with that. In fact, in some ways I think she needs to, otherwise she should rightfully get called out for being a hypocrite.
Let’s address the second elephant in the room, Billie Eilish.
If you aren’t caught up, there seems to be some shade coming from Billie/her camp about Taylor. I very much dislike when female artists are pitted against each other (something Taylor has called the media out for in the past) because when say, Kendrick and Drake are “feuding” the language around what is happening is very different when women are having a public disagreement.
That all being said, nothing seems to be coming from Taylor’s camp and from what I’ve seen, the comments Billie made about three hour concerts was taken out of context. I also think Billie’s manager (who liked a twitter thread calling out Taylor for blocking other artists), could be making a point that Billie herself doesn’t believe. Much like the rebuttal for the NYT’s Gaylor piece seemed to come from people in Taylor’s camp, not necessarily from Taylor herself.
Before Taylor discuss Billie in her speech, she names a number of newer female artists in the music industry that she is a fan of and Billie is included on that list
And I see that fire in the newer faces in our music industry whose work I absolutely love. I see it in Lizzo, Rosalia, Tayla Parx, Hayley Kiyoko, King Princess, Camila Cabello, Halsey, Megan Thee Stallion, Princess Nokia, Nina Nesbitt, Sigrid, Normani, H.E.R., Maggie Rogers, Becky G, Dua Lipa, Ella Mai, Billie Eilish. And so many other amazing women who are making music right now.
This is what she had to say about Billie specifically
This speech I’m referring to was on my 25th birthday. I’m about to turn 30 tonight, woo! But my exact quote during the speech was, ‘I really just feel like we need to continue to try to offer something to a younger generation of musicians, because somewhere right now your future Woman of the Year is probably sitting in a piano lesson or in a girls’ choir “and today right now we need to take care of her.’
I’ve since learned that at that exact moment, an 11-year-old girl in California really was taking piano lessons and really was in a girls’ choir. And this year she has been named Woman of the Year at the age of 17. Her name is Billie.
Sure, a lot of things could have happened in the last 5 years, and maybe Taylor and Billie do have “beef”, or, it could be that the music/tabloid industry is trying to create bad blood where none exists.
With those two points out of the way, let me get to the other parts of the speech that caught my attention.
Let’s start with the cringe. Oh, the cringe. I am doing my best to embrace my own cringe because I have a lot of it, but hoo boy, the speech has some very cringey moments. I think her points are valid of course, but I also think she is performing. I think she is still processing what happened to her with the masters sale/failed coming out attempt, but she doesn’t want people to know the pain she was in and potentially what she has planned. So instead, she comes across as over the top.
Some of her posturing reminds me of the meme that Better than Revenge/SN Taylor was/is scary. Specifically I’d see people point to her reaction at around the one minute mark of this video
Which further reminds me of the quote from Taylor’s Time Person of the Year interview
“Ultimately, we can convolute it all we want, or try to overcomplicate it, but there’s only one question." Here, she adopts a booming voice. “Are you not entertained?”
Like, what was the reason for that? lol
Again, these examples seem to point to Taylor performing and/or hiding the true intent of what she’s talking about.
Now, let’s discuss this possible “aha” moment I had
When this decade began I was 20 years old
Which made me think of Daylight
I've been sleeping so long in a 20-year dark night
And now I see daylight, I only see daylight
I wonder if that reference in Daylight isn’t about a timespan, but a reference to Taylor at 20 years old.
That is the age she finished writing Speak Now. Also, the age when I think she decided to stay closeted instead of writing songs about girls, like she wanted.
Daylight already breaks my heart because it was the original name for TS7 and what many people (myself included) believe was her coming out song. She thought when Daylight was released she’d finally be out of the closeting darkness she’d been in since she was 20 years old. And then, she wasn’t.
As a quick side note, there are at least two other references to 20 years in Taylor’s music that I think could be a reference to Taylor deciding to closet at that age
https://preview.redd.it/oynjd0z4ut2d1.png?width=1266&format=png&auto=webp&s=dbcf43e89988784527f7071faef30aa6a05f2340
Moving on to what I think is a prelude to folklore
I saw that people love to explain away a woman’s success in the music industry, and I saw something in me change due to this realization. This was the decade when I became a mirror for my detractors. Whatever they decided I couldn’t do is exactly what I did
This is like the thesis statement for mirrorball. Not only that though, in the following sentence she tells us that if someone tells her she can’t do something (like stopping her multiple times from coming out as an example for no reason whatsoever), she is going to take that as a challenge and do it anyway.
It could also be a reference to a lot of the mirrors/mirror imagery/coming back around vibes that have been all over Midnights, TTPD, recent music videos, and the Eras tour.
This quote I believe is referenced in the Bejeweled mv
At that time I couldn’t understand why this wave of harsh criticism had hit me so hard. I believe a popular headline back then was, ‘A Swift Backlash,’ which is clever, you gotta give it to ’em
Laura Dern as the stepmother in the mv: “He tired of her quite quickly or should I say swiftly?”
Taylor’s response: “There it is. That joke never gets old. Thank you, thank you so much.”
Taylor directly references Speak Now in her speech
So then I decided that I would be the only songwriter on my third album, Speak Now, and that I would tour constantly, work on my vocals every day, and perfect my stamina in a live show. I decided I would be what they said I couldn’t be. I didn’t know then that soon enough people would decide on something else I wasn’t quite doing right, and then the circle would keep going on and on and rolling along and I would keep accommodating, over-correcting, in an effort to appease my critics.
And what prey tell, Taylor, are you referencing here? 👀🌈
This part gave me a chuckle
They’re saying I’m dating too much in my 20s? Okay, I’ll stop, I’ll just be single. For years.
For years you say? When exactly? lol There was about a two year gap between her publicly dating Harry Styles and Calvin Harris, but the way Taylor says it implies something longer than two years. Maybe this was her planting seeds for the public to start questioning her public narrative? 🤷🏻‍♀️
Here’s another head scratcher for me
Now it’s that I’m showing you too many pictures of me with my friends, okay, I can stop doing that too. Now I’m actually a calculated manipulator rather than a smart businesswoman? Okay, I’ll disappear from public view for years. Now I’m being cast a villain to you? Okay, here’s an album called Reputation and there are lots of snakes everywhere.
I find it very interesting she is saying that disappearing from the public eye was a calculated move as opposed to a decision she made with Joe to keep their relationship private. Again, in contradiction to her public narrative - especially post Toe breakup.
She has amazing things to say about Lana del Ray, who we now know she worked with for Midnights.
I’ve watched as one of my favorite artists of this decade, Lana Del Rey, was ruthly criticized…in her early career and then slowly but surely she turned into, in my opinion, the most influential artist in pop. Her vocal stylings, her lyrics, her aesthetics, they’ve been echoed and repurposed in every corner of music, and this year her incredible album is nominated for Album of the Year at the Grammys because she just kept making art. And that example should inspire all of us, that the only way forward is forward motion. That we shouldn’t let obstacles like criticism slow down the creative forces that drive us.
The highlighted line is the opposite of what she says in the Manuscript, which I referenced at the beginning of this post. I think her mindset has changed since she started rerecording her first six albums and since she recorded the new albums she released since this speech. I think Taylor has realized that she can’t move forward without addressing the past and she can’t move on until she’s corrected the past, which I think she is doing now.
This quote certainly hits different now
Lately there’s been a new shift that has affected me personally and that I feel is a potentially harmful force in our industry, and as your resident loud person, I feel the need to bring it up.
Hahahahaha. Sorry, Tay, I love you and I’ve defended you for not being outspoken, but this is objectively funny. And does feed into the narrative that Taylor is only loud on something that affects her.
In the gay way though, that line is 👀🌈
To Taylor’s credit, for this speech, she has no issues calling out, by name, those who she feels have benefitted from the sale of her masers and how they have taken her art from her, art that she had her hand in creating.
For me, this quote foreshadows the use of You Don’t Own Me before the Eras concert starts. The added context of Lesley Gore being a closeted lesbian has always felt very on point as well.
The fact is that private equity is what enabled this man to think, according to his own social media post, that he could buy me. But I’m obviously not going willingly. Yet the most amazing thing was to discover that it would be the women in our industry who would have my back and show me the most vocal support at one of the most difficult times, and I will never, ever forget it. Like, ever.
Taylor wanting to change the music industry is another reason I think she will come out. I know how wronged she feels by it, never mind the stories we’ve heard from other musicians, and even scarier, the stories we never hear.
And those are the stories we need to think about every day as we do our jobs within this industry. The ones where people’s dreams come true and they get to create music and play it for people. The ones where fans feel a connection to music that makes their day easier, makes their night more fun, makes their love feel more sacred, or their heartache feel less isolating. The ones where all of you in this room stand as an example for someone else in the next generation who loves the same thing that we love. Music. And no matter what else enters the conversation, we will always bring it back to music.
Finally let’s get to the last bit of seed planting that i think Taylor did this night.
During her Eras show in Melbourne on February 18th, Taylor announced a change to the acoustic set
I’ve been thinking, I want to be as creative as possible with the acoustic set moving forward. I don’t wanna limit anything and say, ‘Oh, if I’ve played a song before I can’t play it again.’ So from now on, I don’t wanna take any paint colors out of the paint box of colors … I want to be able to play songs more than once if I feel like it, and I wanna be able to make changes to songs
The bolded part makes me 👀🌈 lol
Since Paris N1, she has made a point when discussing the acoustic set to say rules aren’t for her anymore 👀🌈
This is the last line of her Woman of the Decade speech
And as for me, lately I’ve been focusing less on doing what they say I can’t do and more on doing whatever the hell I want.
If that line is foreshadowing, then I think we are all in for one hell of a ride.
Starting with Pride this month and June 13th in particular 🌈🤡
