What Is a Website Indexer?

A website indexer is a tool used to facilitate the process of indexing web pages on search engines like Google and Bing, ensuring that the content on a website is easily discoverable through search queries.
Website indexers work by analyzing the content of web pages, categorizing them, and then submitting them to search engines for inclusion in their databases. This process helps search engine crawlers better understand the relevance and importance of each page, ultimately improving the website's visibility in search results. Search engine optimization (SEO) specialists often rely on website indexers to ensure that their content is properly indexed and ranked by search engines, leading to increased organic traffic and better online visibility.

2024.06.09 09:13 DragonStryk72 Valoria Saga (Chapter 2)

Prev Royal Road Patreon
Karghol stepped forward. As Rob he might be scared, but he'd been the leader of the group for a long time, operating as our main tank across a ton of games, and now, I could see him taking that step again, "Okay, first thing's first. If they're gonna pop us out of this from the outside, then that's not on us, but we've all seen this anime. If they're not coming, then we need to get to the endgame as fast as possible."
"Nope," I shook my head, surprising even myself at how quickly I'd said something.
He turned, "What? I mean, we gotta get out ahead of this."
"In most games, I'd agree, but not here, not in this game. Also, side-point but decision time for everyone: Real names or character names? I can't keep flipping between them. Lugh is what's on my party registry, so I'm sticking with Lugh," It seemed small but wasn't.
I'd learned well enough that giving people all of the information was most often counter-productive at best. Giving people a small, immediate choice was far preferable and got them on the path to understanding better. Temur snorted slightly at the absurdity, "Well, I suppose you can call me either Temur, or Temur. Whichever floats your boat."
Several groans came out, and finally, some laughter. I mean, it was dad joke humor to be sure, but jokes were probably going to become a much more specific thing for us. From there, everyone chose their character names, either because it was simply easier given the nametags in our party rotation, or because they just didn't want everyone knowing their real ones. Khargol however, was a slight agitated, "Alright, so why not speedrun it?"
"Because speedrunners die and reset constantly."
The slight mirth died out in the room, but Khargol wasn't ready to yield the point, "I've watched you do a no-death run of Dark Souls!"
I nodded, "And do you have any idea how many times I died in that game getting to that level of skill? Look, this isn't Dark Souls. That game has set difficulty levels. Yeah, it's got solid AI, but here? The AI adapts to tactics, and I'm pretty sure the beta test players are about to learn that the hard way."
Everyone was a bit curious at the statement, but it was Shelara who spoke up, "What does that 'adaptive AI' mean?"
I sighed, and took a seat at the head of the table, with Khargol finally sitting down next to me, "It means the AI of the system is learning. Beta testers essentially get to play ahead of the general public to try and stress test the system under actual play conditions. Most usually, they'll try to learn as many exploits as possible, so even if they start out on brand new characters, they're still going to be far ahead of the pack, getting gear and coin ahead of others. Assume that the beta testers have watched things like SAO or other 'trapped in a video game' style series, and they're doing the same as Khargol is suggesting. Problem is, that's exactly what a bunch of them already did, and if the AI works like it's supposed to, then it's ready for them.
"For Valorian Saga, one of the biggest selling points was its adaptive AI system, a system that learns. What that means is that the system behind bosses has already learned those exploits from beta testers and has some sort of answer for them, and they're going to run dead into them."
Chrysta sat forward, leaning her elbows on the table, at least in part to show off her biceps, "Well if a speedrun is out of the question, then what do we do instead?"
Shelara cut back in, "But... shouldn't we try and go save the beta testers?"
I considered, "Shelara, in answer to your question, we can't. Even assuming we could catch up to wherever they're at, there's almost no chance they'd listen to us if we did. They're just as likely to assume we're rivals, or to think we're idiots, but regardless they won't be following our instructions just because we say so. As far as they're concerned, they already know this game, and we're a bunch of sprouts who are panicking. Even if we could get past that point, we don't know the game like they do, and we're more likely to end up needing saving before we ever get to them.
"As to the other question, Chrysta, what we do now is finish up the starter quests, then we use our flyers to join the militia."
Every MMO veteran groaned openly. Arkadi especially was annoyed at the concept, "Come on, man, faction-grinding on day two? We're not even out of the gate yet!"
I'd expected this, and checked my in-game clock, and swore under my breath. We needed to get moving, with only roughly eighteen minutes of daylight left, "Guys, that's why we need to join the militia. It's safe, and grinding up our faction rep with Valoria opens a lot of doors, not least of which is giving us barracks space to live in free of charge, basic equipment upgrades, and getting coin. That's just the short-term gains. Yeah, not much, but it gives us a foundation. We get the lay of the land, and we build up our strategies. There's another reason though, and it's important."
Khargol nodded, "As militia, we get arrest powers in line with the laws of Farrelston."
"Wait, we'd be cops?" Shelera seemed slightly hyped about the concept.
I nodded, "More or less. We aren't out in the main room right now cause everyone's losing their minds out there. They're all coming to terms with the idea that this place is where they might die, and that breeds desperate reactions. Fourteen million players split between fifty servers, giving an average server population of... two-hundred-eighty thousand per server give or take for server popularity. Assume maybe one percent of that go fully around the bend and get violent, and that gives us two thousand eight hundred violent criminals that just hit the city on this server that have the ability to level up within the system.
"Farrelston has to be a safe space for players to return to, but that can't happen if there isn't order, and that means law enforcement."
One of our newcomers made her presence felt, the elf woman from the cathedral, shaking as she spoke, "I'm Layala. What about my brother?"
Tom... "I don't know. I don't what happens to those who die in the game. Maybe they wake up, maybe they're just comatose in a hospital somewhere, or maybe they're gone."
I let it sink in for everyone. Layala's eyes fell to the table as she slowly wept. I hate this, but sugarcoating the thing wasn't good for anyone, "All I can work on right now is keeping us all alive. This is a fantasy RPG, so for all I know, there might be another way to get them back, but I don't want to get anyone's hopes up. Anyone who knows someone who didn't respawn, we'll keep a journal of names, to see that they're remembered. We chronicle the dead, and if the opportunity to get them back presents itself, we go all-in on it.
"I know we all have questions... but we can't stay here to answer them all, and I don't have all the answers for you. We need to start moving, and moving now. We've got thirteen people here, our five and the eight we added on. We've got enough people to form a guild when the time comes, so we should start acting like a guild now."
Layala's voice cracked, "I-I nominate Lugh."
I was startled. I've been very game-knowledgeable, but I wasn't the leader type. It was never my role in the group.
"I second the nomination."
Khargol. My head whipped around, "Look, guys, I'm not a leader. I know stuff, that's what I've got. Khargol's the one who leads."
Khargol shook his head, "Not here, not in this game. I'm all good for the tanking, but you're the only one of us who's putting out a plan of attack, and I'm getting more lost by the minute. It sucks dude, and it hurts to admit it to myself, but you're the guy this time."
Nods occurred, and by show of hands, I was almost unanimously elected to command the 'guild', minus my own dissenting vote. Well.... crapbaskets, "Alright, fine. I won't argue it, but we've gotta get a move on. Get the starter quests going, and when we unlock the job change system, we'll work things out from there. Until then, we'll break into three parties, two four-man parties, and one five-man. Khargol, you're in charge of the five-man, Temur and myself are the other party leaders for now. We'll meet at the barracks come sundown. We spread out the neos amongst the three parties so they're all protected, and we get started. Don't do any combat quests alone."
I picked up Shelera for my party's neo, along with Chrysta and Layala, and the parties agreed to meet up in front of the barracks around sunset so we could join up together. We fought the press of bodies in the tavern to get out into the streets, and headed off for our quests. I could feel my heart racing a bit, the whole thing feeling like some sort of bad dream, but we would need a minute to get things together, "Okay, let's check everyone's quest logs. Any shareable quests, share them with the group so we can all help out and get rewards. We tackle them from lowest to highest."
We moved through the streets to the first quest, running messages around the city for the heralds. The quest was designed to get new players oriented with the larger city of Farrelston and what factions existed within it. The vast majority of players though, were barely moving, either pressed into the tavern or milling about in front of the cathedral. This was a huge problem, and we were finding clusters of people around, hiding and trying to just deal with the enormity of it all. We were running messages to guards, merchants, and nobles on what was a very low-key questline while watching people crying or raging. Shelera moved up next to me, close to tears herself, "We can't do anything?"
a I halted, and looked around again, and noticed some people who weren't in groups. Solo players who had come in by themselves, the same as you'd see in any MMO, and now they were cut off from the world, friends, family, and no party. Solo players really only existed in MMOs, people who would just fill in the gaps, and otherwise keep to themselves, and it worked in the world of video games. In the real world, though, it wasn't good, "We can do a little."
I jogged over to where a powerfully built Dracon with a sword and shield was balled up on the ground, weeping, purple-scaled head buried in his arms. I knelt down next to him, laying a hand on his shoulder, "Hey, what's your character name?"
The Dracon boy looked up imploringly, his voice quavering, "Umbaar..."
"Hi, Umbaar. I'm Lugh, and these are my friends. Why don't you come with us? You can join our party," I kept my tone even by pleasant.
He nodded sheepishly and accepted the party invite, "My mom's gonna kill me. I wasn't even supposed to be playing the game."
Oh God, no, "How old are you, Umbaar?"
"I'll be fourteen in December."
Due to the nature of the game, the minimum age for Valorian Saga was eighteen. He'd likely gotten access to the rig, and just jumped on, and now he was trapped, "I'm sure right now, your mom's just worried about you, but we'll keep you safe. Come on, we've got quests to do."
The absurdity of our questing was fully growing with each step we took. After running messages, we helped the watch with investigating some local crimes to learn the search system, worked with merchants on trading to get the economy down, and along the way, we found some more solos to fill us out to the party cap of eight. The jobs were immaterial to me, but Shelera and Layala both found comfort in picking up more people, with the latter taking over care of Umbaar. NPCs went about their day's work, and I started to catch on to something, "Hey... is this day... running long to anyone else?"
Games don't use full twenty-four-hour days, using a shorter day and night cycle to give the impression of a world without having to artificially inflate the game to make it feel like a full day. Valorian Saga had, in the videos, been shown to have a twenty-minute day, and twenty-minute night, but as we ran around, it had been far more than twenty minutes now. The sun had barely moved in the sky, which given the rest of the game's level of detail wasn't something they would've ignored. Chrysta spoke up after counting her clock, "Uh... well dearheart, I do believe we've got us a twenty-four cycle now."
There were several possibilities to this, perhaps either our minds changed gear to work with in-game time, or the game had altered to have twenty-four-hour time. Either way, we had no answers for it. I was getting a bit sick of having more and more questions I couldn't answer, but I couldn't focus on it in the here and now. I called a halt, and we found a small corner tavern to get food and drink. I took some time with the menu system, and up popped the character status window.
By statistics, we were moving up a bit, but the main stats of our jobs weren't changing very much at all. My basic stats for movement had risen, but not by much, and the gain was tapering off. That was probably from all the walking around the city we were doing. Reputations were going up in the city guilds attached to our quests, but again, they were minor improvements, and the effective XP was tapering off from doing them. I took out my character journal, a system conceit by the devs that the game world was simply too grand in scale to not allow a lot of notetaking, and did stat-math just like when I would spreadsheet my builds at home. From what I could see, the game had no true 'leveling' system. Instead, skills and attributes were built up by how you played, sort of like in Skyrim, but the same actions would not keep getting you the same degree of XP. A common enough point, or else someone could pull a South Park and just merc wolves until they hit the cap. Abilities would unlock as your stats rose, some coming online automatically like Sprint, while others you had to find a trainer for, such as the Double Knock ability for archers. From what I'd seen online, the abilities would unlock advanced jobs, and certain combinations would unlock hybrid jobs, so a Paladin would be a combination of a knight and acolyte. None of the testers had gotten that far, however, they'd just seen the possibility of it.
I noticed Shelera leaning over to look at my journal, and I smiled, "Just doing nerd stuff, plotting my progression to figure out what jobs I need."
She smiled back, "That seems weirdly normal. What are you thinking of doing?"
"Well, for now, I need to move up my abilities as a Hunter, right? Hunter eventually leads to a few choices, so I'm thinking I'll probably go for a Ranger build. That means I can train up Yndress here as a battle companion."
Yndress had been flying about with me, and sometimes resting on my shoulder, and now, she was curled up by my arm on the table as I continued. Shelera reached over and petted Yndress, "That is so cool. She's so warm. I totally should've figured out a way to get the limited edition... so what should I be leveling up?"
"Well, you're a vagabond, so you might look at something like Bounty Hunter since we're working with the militia. Combine that with another job.... huh."
"What?"
Daeva grinned, "Oh, sweetie, he just worked somethin' out. What do you need, Lugh?"
"Give me a minute. I need to go to the scrivener," I shot up and stepped out of the tavern.
It wasn't far to the scrivener where I could buy the supplies I needed. We'd just done an ink delivery there, and now, I would need paper and ink to work with. Returning, I cleared off the tavern table and laid out a large scroll used for maps, currently unmarked, "Okay, I need everyone to bring up your character pages and stand where I can read them."
Gamers generally do have a sense of when someone's worked out an exploit, and this was one of those times. They brought up their screens so I could start marking down abilities, attributes, and skills. Of note, my Scibing ability was ticking slowly upward as I laid things out. Scribing could turn into runic writing and other more arcane and mundane pursuits. What I was working on became a skill tree system, with the various jobs being grouped together. I had to move things around, and in real life I wouldn't be able to do that with ink, but in the game sense, it was pretty simple. I kept moving around my drawing, finally starting to come into a workable initial system of abilities, jobs, and other things that built off of one another. It look a bit mad, like if no one had stopped the devs on Path of Exile's skill tree, but it was there, "We're thinking about this wrong. We need to get to the barracks. I don't want to explain this twice."
Banded back up, I stopped by our newest unlock: Carriage Stations. The city was entirely too big to be running around it all the time, and for just half a silver, we could go to any other ward in the city. I signaled the coachman, handing him my flyer, "Take us to the militia barracks."
The coachman nodded sharply, "Right you are, sir."
The coaches held four, so we split between the two, and I rechecked my numbers. I was pretty certain I was right by the math, but these things didn't always pan out like you wanted, so it was best to recheck. It still seemed to be working out like I thought, but I needed Temur for a blind study of it. We got out at the barracks, a building made up of fortified walls and barred windows with internal shutters. Militiamen NPCs were standing guard out front, while we could just see some working in the training yard to the side. From what I could see, however, we were the only players here.
Temur's party arrived first, and apparently, I wasn't the only one picking up strays as two carriages emptied of people. He was running a full party as well now, and grinning in his uniquely Temur way, even if he did have draconic features now, "So, I see we're all taking in the lost little lambs?"
"I mean, sure, why not? That's how we met, so why not do it here, too?"
He nodded, "Questing went well, if a bit hum-drum, but you have a look in your eyes that says you've worked something out. You got math time!"
I nodded, "Waiting for... yeah, Khargol went off-road, I see."
Temur and I had shown up with two carriages each, only for Khargol to pull up with four, all packed. That put our new numbers at thirty-two players as he practically bounced up to us, "What?!"
We both shook our heads, "Nothing, man. Never change. I've got some news for everyone."
The full mass moved over to the side of the building so we weren't obstructing the entrance, "Party people, I worked something out at lunch."
I rolled out my map of the skills tree, "Okay, so I was going over my character screen, and did some math. I know what we need to do: We need to move up on every job."
Khargol shook his head, "Isn't that gonna leave us as jacks of all trades? We'd be running pretty average."
I gestured with my hands a bit in dismissal, "Usually, you're right, but here, it's different. The stats aren't really separated here, they're intended for cross-classing, and it's not just the combat jobs. I moved up a bit at Scribing here, and it looks like it'll be the same for crafting and gathering jobs. Move up in X, Y, and/or Z jobs and you unlock a hybrid. So like, say you move up as a blacksmith, armorer, and weaponsmith. All three have abilities building into one another, and that can unlock further abilities, other jobs, a whole classification of things we can't see yet.
"Using abilities works up the stats associated with that ability, and the higher the ability, the more XP it generates for the stats. Those stats still stay there when you do a job change, so you could be a Gladiator working up strength by working the forge."
Shelera looked over the drawing, "Okay, so you think if we take every job up, then that'll make us a lot stronger? But won't we end up with a bunch of usless stats?"
I shook my head, "No, for two primary reasons. For one, what if instead of Paladin, you went something like a Hexblade in D&D terms? Or, Shelera, you take Bounty Hunter, then build up your hunter job to Scout, and you have something akin to a Justicar class? Or Khargol, what if you master every weapon group?"
Temur's interest was peaked at mention of Hexblade, "And what is the second reason?"
I sucked in a breath, "It's a job change system. There's a job change skill, and every basic skill I've seen has upgrades, even if I can't see the end of the trees yet. The adaptive AI is going to adapt to our individual tactics, but even if all of us were playing hunters, we'd all approach hunting differently, maybe more reliant on archery, or snares, or pets. It would force the AI to keep readapting its own tactics on the fly. If we build up, we might just be able to get to something better than the sum of our parts."
Karghol nodded, "And that makes it doubly important we get going on the militia stuff. Shall we?"
The lot of us went over to the barracks, where a guard greeted us at the door, "Hold, citizens. What is your business with the thirteenth Valorian militia?"
I stepped forward, "We're here to enlist for service."
The guard perked right up, "Ah, good. Greetings and well met! I am Sergeant-at-Arms Brant. We are in need of stalwart folk to help protect Farrelston and wider Valoria in these trying times. Dark things are afoot both at home and afar, and it speaks well of you that you would choose service. Please, enter the hall, and register yourselves with Yeoman Granger. Welcome once again, may the purple dragon fly eternal!"

2024.06.09 06:22 Serious-Situation260 What is the best legal strategy for getting my niece out of my sister's care? Father is deceased. [New York]

I recently spent 2 weeks with my sister and niece in their home. It was great to be able to spend time with my niece because i hadn't seen her in a year and because she hardly gets any social interaction. The experience broke my heart at many points as the reality of my sister's strange lifestyle came into focus with each passing day. I spent a lot of time making lists and ordering household items & groceries via Walmart delivery. I didn't have a car while I was there but i was determined to stock the apartment with items that are normally found in a home and things that would make their life easier. I taught my niece how to cook a few things in the microwave, how to open doors with keys, I taught her the different coins (penny, nickle, dime, quarter), I got her taking showers instead of baths, brushing her teeth (she didnt know how to do it properly at all), bought her some clothes, hydrating and spending time outside each day. We played Truth or Dare, we prayed, we beat-boxed, we watched SpongeBob, we went to Lion Country Safari and we practiced swimming in the pool. At the end of the two weeks, when it was time for me to leave, it was painful for us both. We both knew that after I left, their life would revert to what is normal for them: Mom in bed all day on her phone and my niece ignored in the adjacent room, glued to her ipad.
My sister is mentally ill, but I am furious with her for disrespecting herself, her child and our family like this. There are multiple other family members who can and will help in taking care of my niece properly, but my sister refuses to let anyone help. On top of that, my sister is extremely rude, manipulative and psychotic. Shes been this way her whole life and she refuses to get treatment. Typical narcissist! My whole family has been forced to endure the abuse of my sister for about 25 years, sonwe are kind of desensitized to it generally, but lately it is apparent that her behavior has gotten even worse, and only now, after my 2 week visit, are the rest of the family members realizing exactly how depraved she has been acting as a parent, and we are all extremely concerned.
I don't care how hard it's going to be or what it's going to take but I'm going to fix this problem, and I'm committed to fixing this problem ASAP.
Please review this timeline of relevant events in order to come up with strategies for getting my niece into a healthy living situation:
Father of the child got a restraining order on my sister in 2016ish, while my sister was pregnant.
There were violent interactions between the mother and father. I'm not sure if any are documented in terms of police records.
1st CPS case [Oregon]: My sister had custody temporarily taken away directly after she gave birth. Why? Positive hospital drug test while pregnant, domestic violence incident while pregnant, the restraining order id imagine and ber behavior at the hospital when giving birth. I flew to the state they were in (Oregon) and served as a family supervisor for about 4 weeks, told CPS that my sister was a fit parent, and my sister got custody back.
2nd CPS Case [California]: My sister was supposed to return home to her daughter and the babysitter after a night out when the child was 1 year old or less. This resulted in a CPS investigation. My sister moved out of state before the investigation could be completed. Apparently this resulted in a warrant for her arrest in CA and maybe a few surrounding states. California CPS has tried to reach out to her and my family members many times over the years in an attempt to identify her location.
3rd & 4th CPS Cases [Florida]: About a month ago, 2 CPS reports were created for neglect, injury of the child and my sisters mental illness. My sister did not answer the door and pretended not to be home when DCF went there with the police. She then moved out of her apartment ASAP and out of the jurisdiction.
Other info:
My sister is now in New York where my father is an attorney. He has always enabled my sister's irresponsible behavior and also he is the one instructing her how to handle each CPS interaction. His awful advice has led to my sister and niece having to move around a lot because my sister and dad are very paranoid about people figuring out her location. My sister avoids doing things like taking my niece to the doctor or enrolling her in regular school for this reason. She also avoids therapy and mental evaluations for herself personally for this reason.
Both my sister and my niece (who is now 7) urgently need mental health evaluations. I took care of my niece for 2 weeks last month (before they went on the run) and my niece seemed to be experiencing visual hallucinations, "voices in her head telling her to do violence", & violent intrusive thoughts. She expressed the voices in her head comment verbatim to one of her teachers at the end of a Zoom meeting to assess her progress in school. She also expressed ideas of self harm frequently, as does my sister. My sister has seld diagnosed herself recently with borderline personality disorder and has decided to make it part of her "brand" as an aspiring TikToker. She is proud of it and openly refuses to get therapy or medication. She's also posted a threatening video recently on TikTok, telling someone that they need to "get their mom's gun because they are going to need it this week" when she comes to their town.
The guy my sister was dating recently petitioned for a TRO against my siater very recently as did his housemate.
When the first TRO was granted, the FBI called the Petitioner and asked if they could meet to discuss a matter involving my sister (apparently not CPS related but a separate criminal matter). The Petitioner was informed that there are BOLO (be on the lookout) alerts, whatever that means, for my sister in 3 US states, and that the TRO petition triggered something with NCIC which led to the fbi agent reaching out.
There's SO much more to this story but I'm trying to keep it as short as I can.
I'd say the other most relevant pieces of information are:
My mom and I are hell bent on getting my niece into a stable, safe situation, ideally under custody of my mom. My sister can get custody back if/when she meets the demands of a judge demonstrating that she is fit and able.
My dad has dug his heels in even deeper in his morally bankrupt plan to have my sister evade CPS forever. He has a lot of experience with family court matters as an attorney so I guess he thought in the beginning that my sister could utilize the tricks he knows about the system to circumvent it entirely. He didn't plan on me "turning against" my sister I suppose. So now it's like a family battle of my mom and I vs my siste and dad. (My parents are divorced)
Two days ago I found out that I have an eviction on my record and $6k+ in debt from a 2017 eviction in LA County under my name. I've never lived in LA or even California, but my sister has! I wrote to my dad saying basically, "this is obviously name-related. Do you happen to know anything about this?". His response was, 'sorry, that's just old landlord stuff from when niece's name was a little baby." His next message dorectly after this was "how are you?" my dad pretty much admitted right then and there that my sister used my identity to rent an apartment in order to move out of the jurisdiction of either her 1st or 2nd cps case. My dad's response also shows that he knew about this. From the "sorry" part, I confirmed my suspicion that this was all his idea.
I sent my sister and dad an email yesterday with a blank temporary custody agreement telling them that it would be a really great opportunity for my sister to sign over temp custody to my mom for the summer at least. I said that my other sibling would also be an acceptable candidate for custody, if they should so choose.
I also included the case information for the LA eviction & debt owed, careful to state that I was bringing this case to their attention as a totally separate matter.
I ended it with "I hope we can figure out this temporary custody issue voluntarily without court intervention"
My sister is not going to sign it but i figured I might as well throw it out there.
My sister has been living in FL for over a year and my niece participated in online school this past year thru florida but my sister gets her mail in NY (at my dad's place) and her health insurance for her and her kid are thru NY state. I bet my dad set things up this way so he could always say my sister is a NY state resident so that he can represent her in any legal proceedings.
I have researched florida options regarding conservatorship/guardianship/Custody. Going through florida would be the correct way to go but my dad is going to say she's a resident of NY, so it really depends on where the court proceedings start as far as I can tell, regarding what jurisdictioncis correct.
I'd like to wrap my head around the legal proceedings in NY that I, or my mom, or our other sibling, or a lawyer can initiate in order to achieve the goal, which is simply for my niece to be healthy and to thrive and to be safe.

2024.06.09 04:10 No-University-7467 Squad Busters The Good The Bad and The Ugly

Squad Busters: From Excitement to Frustration
When Supercell announced the release of Squad Busters, it was like a breath of fresh air since they haven't released a game in over 5 years. Combining the fun elements of their other games into one, Squad Busters promised a dynamic and engaging experience that could help keep interest in the company itself. Initially, I, like thousands of other players, downloaded the game during the soft launch and grinded the game. Squad Busters lived up to the hype, offering an exhilarating new concept of Supercell games, fast-paced action, and it kept me and my friends playing it instead of studying for our finals. However, as I delved deeper into the game, the initial thrill began to wane once I realized the gold economy in the game is very pay-to-win (P2W). But I support developers, so I spent and continued grinding.

The Fun Beginning

At the outset, Squad Busters was everything a gamer could hope for. The gameplay was smooth, the graphics were vibrant, and the variety of characters kept the battles fresh and exciting. Forming squads and strategizing for different modifiers was both challenging and rewarding. The game’s mechanics encouraged a balanced approach between offensive and defensive tactics, making each match unique.

The Bug Plague

As someone who's in the field of software development, I understand bugs, trust me. Following downloading the game for the first week, I had the crashing bug where you play a match and if you try to play again you crash. The next bug is sorta funny but still an issue: the epic overload witch crashing bug. The most recent bug (post-global launch) is the squad league bug, where if you play in a party with friends and then try to play regular squad league, you don't earn trophies (still pending fixes FYI). These are just the bugs that I'm aware of.

The Pay-to-Win Dilemma

As I progressed, however, the fun started to fade. The gold crisis made me become a P2W player, which I'm fine with considering I want this game to live. It became apparent that advancing without spending real money was nearly impossible. To remain competitive and continue grinding for squad league, I bought offers and gold. The game’s monetization strategy became more aggressive, with constant prompts to buy gold packs and special offers. After getting supers in the game, I became a light spender because that was the max (before ultra). Following the announcement of ultras, we were able to passively gain the resources from chest tickets to grind and collect the champs, but with this in mind, once you hit the 10/10, you were set—or so we thought...

The Infamous Chest Bug

The chest bug, for those that don't know of its existence, essentially halts a player’s progress after they have maxed out their common cards to ultra. Normally, after finishing a match, regardless of placement, you get a chest. However, once you have collected all common ultras, the game doesn't give you a chest after finishing a match because the game can't give you a common since you're maxed, so you can never get rare chests or epic chests. This bug effectively freezes progress, as players can no longer gain the necessary upgrades or items to compete at higher levels. Context: this bug has existed before the game came out globally. Most of the top players have messaged support, followed the instructions, sent videos, and sent tweets, but not a word or thing has been done. Supercell’s unofficial response, we think, is allowing players to reset the shop however many times they want. This bug forces you to spend over thousands of dollars to max out. I'm not saying I don't want to support the game anymore; I'm saying if a feature exists to naturally grind and earn these rewards, why be forced to pay?

Inadequate Support

One of the most frustrating aspects of the Squad Busters experience has been the support team's handling of these issues. It seems that the support team has no idea what's going on in Squad Busters and has provided no real solutions to these bugs. Every time a player reaches out for help, it seems like they receive an AI-generated response, with no real engagement or understanding of the problem. This has not gone unnoticed by the community, and players are growing increasingly frustrated with the lack of meaningful support. In our modern society seeing is believing so i've included links to show evidence via youtube video or twitter post of people talking about it at the TLDR

The Chest Bug’s Wider Impact

The chest bug has sparked a significant outcry within the top player and streaming community. Despite numerous complaints and feedback from players, Supercell’s response has been nonexistent and largely inadequate. Many dedicated players have found themselves unable to continue their progress, leading to widespread frustration and even calls for quitting the game and stopping pushing until the issue is resolved. Once you're maxed out, there's no real reason to grind. As I'm currently writing this post, I'm sitting at around 9.6k trophies, which places me in the top 50 globally and top 5 locally in the US. There are no rewards for me finishing that high, and since I can no longer get chests, I can never do the Tara event, chest doublers, or even open squad journey rewards, which leads me to where I'm at now.

Conclusion

Squad Busters had the potential to be one of Supercell’s best games, but its journey from excitement to frustration is becoming a quick death. The initial fun and strategic depth have been overshadowed by a relentless pay-to-win model and a series of disruptive bugs. While Supercell has a history of developing engaging games, they need to address these critical issues promptly to restore player confidence and ensure the long-term success of Squad Busters.
For now, I, along with many others, am left hoping that Supercell will listen to its community and make the necessary changes. Only then can Squad Busters reclaim its initial charm and deliver the experience that players were so eagerly anticipating.

TL;DR

Squad Busters started strong with engaging gameplay and vibrant graphics but is now plagued by bugs, a heavy pay-to-win model, and inadequate support responses. Critical issues like the chest bug and poor support team responses, which often seem AI-generated, have led to widespread frustration among players. Supercell needs to address these problems to restore player confidence and ensure the game's success.

2024.06.09 01:44 Interesting_Heron_73 Workplace humiliation games

What to do about superior who's into low level sabotage? Does stuff like instructs you to do xyz then when you do, calls it out as "totally wrong" in a public way or tries to trip you up in front of anyone she can for manufactured issues (boss/clients/your reports).
These seem like very basic, ineffectual set ups. Nonetheless, seems to be ratcheting up lately and I'm concerned about anything going on off radar. She's a known office bully according to colleagues, but seems unavoidable and may have influence with higher ups.
Any strategies recommended?

2024.06.09 01:33 Overwhelmed_Heart_07 New Argos Training Session Before the Big Day

The morning sun cast a golden glow over Camp Half-Blood Pavillion, painting the sky with hues of orange and pink as the demigods gathered in the Activity Pavilion. It was an unusual choice of venue for a training session, especially with the Arena being the usual place for sparring and combat practice. However, Dorian, being the Game Master for Camp Half-Blood, had his reasons for opting for a more secluded and private location.
The pavilion was a strategic choice—secluded and away from prying eyes. Dorian wanted their training sessions to be private, a chance for them to hone their skills without giving away their strategies to potential competitors. The large, open space of the pavilion had been transformed into a training ground, with sparring mats, weapons racks, and dummies set up in various corners.
Dorian stood at the front of the pavilion, a tall figure with his lean, athletic build and his wavy blonde hair catching the early morning light. His blue eyes, sharp and focused, scanned the assembled demigods, each one representing the best of Camp Half-Blood's talent.
"Alright, everyone," Dorian began, his voice carrying the air of someone who was used to being listened to. "As you all know, we are here for the tournament, which is now closer than ever. We don't know exactly what to expect, but we do know that we need to be prepared for anything. That's why I've decided to host this training session here, in the Activity Pavilion, away from prying eyes. I want us to be able to focus without distractions and to polish our abilities before the big day."
He paused, allowing his words to sink in. The demigods, ranging from children of Ares with their fierce determination to children of Athena with their keen strategic minds, all listened intently.
"It's simple, you already know the drill. We're going to spar with each other," Dorian continued, "but I want to emphasize something very important: we go all out, but we do not maim each other. This is about pushing ourselves to the limit, testing our abilities, and learning from one another. Even if we end up fighting each other, we are a team, and we will represent Camp Half-Blood to the best of our abilities."
The demigods nodded, their expressions a mix of excitement and determination. They had to be ready to prove themselves, not just to their campmates, but to everyone who would be watching the tournament.
"Let's start with some warm-up exercises," Dorian instructed. "I want you all to pair up and begin with basic drills. Once you're warmed up, we'll move on to sparring. Remember, this is about learning and improving, so pay attention to your partner and give constructive feedback."
As the demigods began their warm-up drills, Dorian moved among them, offering tips and corrections where needed. He watched as the children of Hermes practiced their agility, darting in and out of imaginary attacks with impressive speed. The children of Hephaestus worked on their strength, their powerful blows echoing through the pavilion. The children of Apollo focused on their precision, their strikes clean and calculated.
After a few minutes, Dorian called for attention again. "Alright, let's move on to sparring. Pair up with whoever you want, but ideally, with someone you haven't worked with before – me, included. This is a chance to learn from each other's strengths and weaknesses. Remember, go all out, but be safe."

2024.06.08 23:16 hollykatej First Grade and the Reading Process

I am a first grade teacher who will have a student with SM in my class again next year. There was no speaking done at school at all last year in kindergarten, even to peers, which obviously means that when it came time for our reading assessments they were unable to complete them (in K-1 it is all oral...they repeat sentences after us, read words out loud, sound out nonsense words, read a passage). I hate that they even have to do them and will try to get them exempt, but the kid still needs to be able to read, and I need to know what they are and are not comprehending in order to tailor their phonics instruction! Comprehension I got down, not worried about that aspect since we already use so many ways to non-orally monitor comprehension (and its not the priority in first grade).
In the past, I've taught two others with SM. Every few weeks I would send a video modeling a task to their parents, who would then mimic it with their kid on video for me. Both of those kids started speaking to me by the time assessments rolled around, so we didn't have to use that method long. This is fully dependent on the child's consent and parent participation, and I don't think it's fair to put so much on the parents if they are unable or unwilling, but it is my first instinct since it was so helpful to hear their skills in action. 1:1 will be doable if we get to that place, even if I need to go to the other room with them, and if they start talking to other kids I can secretly monitor their partner reading/games. Have there been other creative strategies to monitor progress that have worked for you/your kids as the "learning to read" process occurred?

2024.06.08 21:51 DisciplineNo1000 IPTV Security: How to Protect Your Streaming Experience

Introduction

In today's digital age, IPTV (Internet Protocol Television) has revolutionized how we consume media. With the ability to stream live TV and on-demand content over the internet, IPTV has gained immense popularity among users worldwide. However, with great convenience comes the necessity for robust security measures. Ensuring your IPTV experience is secure is crucial to protecting your personal information and maintaining a seamless streaming experience.

What is IPTV?

IPTV stands for Internet Protocol Television. Unlike traditional television, which relies on cable or satellite signals, IPTV uses the internet to deliver television content. This method allows users to stream live TV channels and on-demand videos through various devices such as smart TVs, smartphones, tablets, and computers.
IPTV works by transmitting data in small packets over the internet, which are then reassembled at the user's end to display the content. This process enables high-quality streaming and interactive features, making IPTV a preferred choice for many.

Why IPTV Security is Important

With the increasing adoption of IPTV, the risks associated with its use have also risen. Unsecure IPTV services can expose users to various threats, including malware infections, unauthorized access, and data breaches. These security issues can lead to severe consequences such as identity theft, financial loss, and compromised personal information.

Common IPTV Security Threats

Malware and Viruses

Malware and viruses are malicious software designed to infiltrate and damage your devices. When using unsecure IPTV services, you might inadvertently download malware that can steal your personal information or disrupt your streaming experience.

Phishing Attacks

Phishing attacks involve deceptive tactics to trick users into revealing sensitive information, such as login credentials or financial details. Cybercriminals often use fake IPTV service emails or websites to lure unsuspecting users.

Unauthorized Access

Unauthorized access occurs when hackers gain entry to your IPTV account without permission. This can result in unauthorized purchases, changes to your subscription plan, or access to your personal information.

Understanding IPTV Security Basics

Importance of Secure Connections

Using secure connections is fundamental to IPTV security. Ensure that the IPTV service provider uses HTTPS (HyperText Transfer Protocol Secure) to encrypt data transmitted between your device and their servers. This encryption prevents unauthorized parties from intercepting your data.

Role of Encryption in IPTV Security

Encryption converts data into a coded format that can only be deciphered by authorized parties. IPTV services that utilize strong encryption protocols protect your streaming content and personal information from cyber threats.

Choosing a Secure IPTV Provider

Factors to Consider

When selecting an IPTV provider, prioritize those that emphasize security. Look for providers with a strong track record of protecting user data, using encryption, and offering secure payment methods. The best IPTV providers will have transparent privacy policies and customer support that can address security concerns promptly.

Red Flags to Watch Out For

Beware of IPTV providers that lack transparency, offer unusually low prices, or have poor customer reviews. These can be indicators of unreliable services that may compromise your security. An IPTV service with a suspiciously low price might cut corners on security measures, leaving your data vulnerable.

Using VPN for IPTV Security

Benefits of Using a VPN

A Virtual Private Network (VPN) enhances your IPTV security by encrypting your internet connection and masking your IP address. This makes it difficult for hackers to track your online activities and access your data. VPNs provide an additional layer of privacy, ensuring that your streaming habits remain confidential.

How to Set Up a VPN with IPTV

Setting up a VPN with your IPTV service is straightforward. Choose a reputable VPN provider, install the VPN software on your device, and connect to a secure server. Once connected, you can safely stream IPTV content without worrying about your data being intercepted. Firewalls act as barriers between your device and potential threats. By monitoring incoming and outgoing network traffic, firewalls can block suspicious activities and unauthorized access to your IPTV service. Configuring a firewall on your home network adds an extra layer of protection, especially when streaming content via IPTV.

Best Antivirus Software for IPTV Security

Investing in reliable antivirus software is essential. Programs like Norton, McAfee, and Bitdefender offer comprehensive protection against malware and other security threats, safeguarding your IPTV experience. Regular scans with antivirus software can detect and eliminate potential threats before they cause harm.

Safe Streaming Practices

Avoiding Suspicious Links and Downloads

Avoid clicking on unknown links or downloading files from untrusted sources. These can be potential vectors for malware that can compromise your IPTV security. Always download apps and updates from official sources to ensure they are free from malicious software.

Recognizing Secure Websites and Streams

Look for secure websites and streams by checking for HTTPS in the URL and verifying the site's legitimacy. Reputable IPTV services will typically have secure and professional-looking websites. If you're using a service like IPTV Smarters Pro, ensure that you only download the app from the official website or trusted app stores.

Regular Updates and Patches

Importance of Keeping Software Updated

Keeping your IPTV software updated is crucial for security. Software updates often include patches for known vulnerabilities that could be exploited by cybercriminals. Regular updates ensure that your IPTV service remains secure against the latest threats.

Most IPTV apps, including IPTV Smarters Pro, have options to enable automatic updates, making it easy to keep your software current.

Two-Factor Authentication

How Two-Factor Authentication Enhances Security

Two-factor authentication (2FA) adds an extra layer of security by requiring a second form of verification in addition to your password. This could be a code sent to your phone or an authentication app. Enabling 2FA on your IPTV account can significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access.

Steps to Enable Two-Factor Authentication on IPTV Services

To enable 2FA, go to your IPTV service's account settings, find the security section, and follow the instructions to set up 2FA. This will significantly reduce the risk of unauthorized access. Services like IPTV Smarters Pro often offer easy-to-follow guides on enabling 2FA, enhancing your account's security.

Backup and Recovery Plans

Importance of Having Backups

Having backups ensures that you can recover your IPTV settings and preferences in case of a security breach. Regularly back up your data to a secure location. This practice can save you time and frustration if you need to restore your settings after a cyber attack.

How to Create a Recovery Plan for IPTV Data

Create a recovery plan by documenting your IPTV settings and keeping a secure copy of your login credentials. This will help you quickly restore your service if needed. Services like IPTV Smarters Pro often allow you to export and save your configuration settings, making recovery easier.

Monitoring Your IPTV Usage

Tools to Monitor IPTV Usage

Use monitoring tools to keep track of your IPTV usage. These tools can alert you to unusual activities that might indicate a security issue. Monitoring tools can help you detect unauthorized access or changes to your account settings.

Recognizing Unusual Activity

Be vigilant about any changes in your IPTV service, such as unexpected charges or unfamiliar content. These can be signs of unauthorized access or other security problems. Regularly reviewing your account activity can help you quickly identify and address potential security breaches.

2024.06.08 21:26 ApprehensiveCap6525 Earth is a Lost Colony (30)

First Previous Wiki Next
“Admiral?” The word was soft, quiet, barely spoken at all. Compared to the haunting silence of the fleet bridge aboard the Republic’s Claw, it was like a shotgun had gone off. “What are your orders, sir?”
Admiral Jedik turned, slowly, to face the liaison who had spoken. He waited for a moment before he finally had to face the facts. “Flee. Escape. Scatter the fleet.” He had never before issued such an order, but against neutron beam weapons, there could be no victory. The engines of the Republic’s Claw flared to life and her stern pointed at the Neldian star.
“Admiral, what of our prize?” An officer zoomed the holomap in, pointing out the derelict hulk of a United Human Alliance battleship. “We’ve secured the bridge, reactor, and engines,” he proudly reported. He was the commander of the marines stationed aboard the Republic’s Claw. “It will take only one standard hour to get the ship flight worthy again.”
Admiral Jedik had forgotten about the battleship. “What is the status of its data bank?” he asked, trying to conceal his emotions. Fear, and not valor, drove him now, and fear was the one emotion a leader could never show. He had to remain strong, or at least appear it, for only strength could determine right in this galaxy. “Tell me what I can use against this enemy.” He sounded fierce, proud, as if he were a reincarnation of the conquering warlords of days long past. Inwardly, he felt anything but.
“The data banks are mostly purged, sir,” the marine commander sighed. “Our cyber officers are working, but it’s unlikely we’ll recover anything related to the Supreme Leader’s Armada. At least, nothing usable.”
“Then have the fleet escape to the outer system,” said Jedik somberly. “I and the Claw will remain until our charge is ready to flee with us.” Just mere hours ago, victory had seemed so sure. He had been so eager to seize it. Now, he would be lucky to escape this star system alive.
Admiral Jedik had just lost his first real battle. Part of him had yet to accept it. The rest of him felt a paralyzing fear at the knowledge of it.
One thousand Imperial Space Navy warships had just been annihilated. How many lives had been lost? How many families were just shattered? Though Jedik tried not to dwell on these questions, there was nothing else to do, and he thought of them nonetheless.
He was not infallible. He knew that. But was he destined to have failed?
He could have saved those lives. He could have seen the trap earlier. He knew that. But how could he win the day now?
He looked upward, at the screens covering the domed roof of the fleet bridge, and he watched the stars glow distantly in the black sky above. Space had never before seemed so lonely.
“Admiral,” a fleet liaison spoke up. “Admirals Lin and Venin wish to speak with you.” Jedik accepted the request, even if it was doomed to be fruitless. There was nothing better to do.
“So, is that it, then?” Admiral Lin asked. He looked surprisingly good, under the circumstances. Then again, Jedik knew casualties did not worry him as much. “Do you have a plan?”
Admiral Wedol Venin, last flag officer of the Stralqi Confederacy and first of the Stralqi Enclave, looked at Jedik and blinked with his one eye. “I report two hundred and ninety-one vessels remaining. With your fleet’s four hundred and forty-eight, we have just over seven hundred ships of the fleet between us.” Even without the fleet’s battle damage and expended ammunition, they would have been unable to contest the Alliance armada. Admiral Jedik needed another shift in the paradigm. This time, none would be given to him.
“So we have saved a third of the fleet from utter destruction,” Jedik sighed. “It’s better than a quarter, I suppose.” Nobody laughed. Nobody was in the mood.
“What if we used kinetic strikes?” Admiral Lin asked. The other officers all turned to him. “We take asteroids, rig them with charges, and use our ships to tow them into intercept courses with Alliance Space Navy assets. If we used corvettes as forward scouts, this could be effective as artillery.”
“What’s to stop them from dodging the strikes?” Jedik asked. “Even a space station could adjust its position given enough time.”
“We detonate the charges early, to create a cloud of shrapnel at thirty percent lightspeed. The Neldian fleet would be unable to dodge it.” This was an impressive idea, even for a human. Admiral Jedik had to appreciate Lin’s out-of-the-box thinking.
“A commendable plan, but it would be useless. A series of explosive blasts, for example, would be enough to eliminate most of the threat posed by the micrometeoroid clouds. Even if they did get through, the enemy has projectorless shields. No shrapnel attack could penetrate the hull.” That would have been enough to dissuade most flag officers from ever attempting this plan. Admiral Lin, however, was not your average flag officer.
“We could use it as a distraction.” Jedik could almost see the gears turning in the Terran admiral’s head. “Or intersperse antimatter bombs in with the meteor clouds. They could use the cover provided by the micrometeoroids to approach on a ballistic course before firing thrusters to hit the ships.”
“A-bombs have an easily detectable signature,” said Admiral Venin, “Especially so when they engage their drives. They would be shot down easily.” Admiral Lin grew silent. His idea had failed. “Even still, I commend your unorthodox genius. My government was wrong to move against you.” The Stralqi Enclave, the remnant of the Confederacy that had neither the prestige nor the luck to escape on its ark ships, was widely considered to be the Confederacy’s true successor. This meant that its mistakes, such as the demand that Earth be cauterized from orbit, fell on them as well.
“We have but one available course,” Jedik said, speaking aloud what the others feared to admit in their heads, “And that is to flee. Evacuate the system. We will regroup at the Interion fleet base.” His subordinates agreed. “I thank you for your time.”
The holograms blinked out. Admiral Jedik looked at the holomap one more time. The Coalition fleet was in the process of regrouping in the outer system, though none were far enough away to escape in wormholes. There was no sign of the Alliance space fleet just yet.
“Are our gravity weapons active?” Jedik asked.
“No, sir. We’re focusing on repairing EMP projectors at the moment.” A diagram of the Claw’s status appeared in front of him. It did not look good.
“Have engineering modify a bank of missiles to be used as space probes,” Jedik ordered a fleet liaison. “And get me a gravity cannon repaired and online to fire them. I want to know what I’m facing.”
It was done as he instructed. Thirty fusion-drive missiles, their warheads stripped and replaced with sensor banks, coasted toward the inner system in a wide arc. Even if they couldn’t gather data about the Alliance Space Navy’s new weapons, they could at least provide advance warning of an incoming fleet.
Under the circumstances, that was the best Admiral Jedik could do.
“Bring up the files of the Imperial fleet’s destruction,” said Jedik. “Give me hard data, as much of it as you can.” Charts, graphs, and holographic maps appeared in front of him. He manipulated them like a touchscreen, reaching out and tapping thin air with his claws. Sensors in the holotable translated this movement into practical input, and the hologram changed as he desired.
“The enemy’s weapons are extremely close-range, but extremely deadly,” he thought aloud. “They are able to destroy or penetrate armor, shields, and hull in seconds.” His data, though extremely limited, was enough for him to develop a basic strategy for facing this weapon. “At range, we are at a disadvantage.” Battle analysis from Admiral Yon’s fleet, before its swift and merciless end, had shown enemy missile signatures similar to the munitions used by Terran-made artificial gravity weapons. Most of the Coalition fleet did not have these weapons. “In close combat, we’ll get murdered.” None of them had neutron beams.
There was only one question that remained for Jedik to answer. “How close can my fleet safely approach?” If he could bring his ships’ particle weapons in range, the outcome of the fight might swing in his favor. Even the most battered of his warships still had their heavy guns intact.
But the enemy was crafty. They had waited before firing on the Krell Empire’s fleet. If Admiral Jedik brought his ships in too close, and he was lured into a similar trap, it would be the end of him.
“I don’t know, sir,” an officer sighed. “We need more data.”
“We have prisoners aboard,” suggested another. “Perhaps we could interrogate them?”
“What good would that do?” exclaimed Jedik. The room fell silent. “What would they know? Even the Neldian Armada’s sector admiral, the commander of the Neldian fleet, the very man we would have faced had things been different, had nothing on these weapons!”
“They’re probably either new or rare,” Colonel Talta suggested. “Otherwise, we would have seen them before.”
“Thank you,” Jedik sighed sarcastically. “Very, very helpful.” He looked around the room. His officers, for the most part, looked just as defeated as he did. “Wing Admiral Salentis, you have the bridge. The rest of you, get some rest. Dismissed.”
Admiral Jedik left the room in a fury and went to the shooting range. He emptied six magazines with frightening accuracy before he realized it wasn’t helping him. Then, he went to the physical fitness center. He was strong for his age, and healthy as well, but none of that mattered to him beyond providing a distraction. He couldn’t exactly bench-press an enemy warship, after all.
Then, with nothing better to do, he retired to his quarters and got some rest. It would take time to escape the Neldia system, and he had been using combat stimulants too often to be healthy. Good sleep was a rare commodity in the Republic fleet.
A short rest later, he was awoken by the sound of an RDF:Space duty alarm. He was needed on the bridge. He changed into his black uniform, clipped a sidearm to his hip holster, and walked into the bridge newly invigorated. “Situation report!”
“We’ve received a tight-beam transmission from the warship A.S.N. Brightest Thunder, sir,” said one of his fleet liaisons. “Or, more specifically, our captured battleship has.” An image of the derelict battleship A.S.N. Inexorable had been magnified on the command table, replacing the tactical map that was usually displayed. “It contains a data packet coded in an Alliance cipher, as well as a message in Republic encryption.”
The message appeared before Admiral Jedik, who read it eagerly. “The chancellor’s spy. I always knew she had plans I was not privy to.” He looked at his most senior advisor. “That cipher, if our agent does not lie, protects every scrap of data sent through the Neldian hypercom relay.” The advisors all agreed. Spies did not typically lie to their handlers. “She’s taken a terrible risk by transmitting it to us,” Jedik said. “Make use of it!”
“We cannot crack the code, sir,” an officer protested. “The cipher is incredibly complex. Even attempting to breach it could delete the entire packet.” The Republic’s Claw had the best cyberwarfare division in the Ierad Republic. If they could not do it, chances were that no one could.
“Well?” Jedik waved his wings. “Any suggestions?”
“The captain of the Inexorable might know the cipher,” an officer spoke up. Jedik noted that he was the same one who had suggested the interrogations earlier. “It is my understanding, based on reports, that Admiral Dama’s transmission caused dissent among the Alliance ranks. Inexorable, for one, was heavily affected by this.”
For the fourth time that day, things that had seemed set in stone were instead being molded like clay. Five minutes ago, all had seemed lost. There was no way to counter the Alliance’s mystery weapons. But now, there was a change in the paradigm. Now, there was intelligence to be gathered.
If Admiral Jedik could convince the Inexorable’s captain to cooperate, he could crack the Alliance data packet. If he could crack the data packet, he could have a treasure trove of intelligence at his disposal. And if he had that much intelligence to work off of, that meant he had a fighting chance against his opponent.
“You’ve all done wonderfully,” Jedik said, his anger and fear from before being replaced by a sense of knowledge and calm. “I am truly honored to work with such competent advisors.” With that, he left. He had a job to do.
The dining room of the Inexorable was massive, and far from spartan. Its floor was carpeted with fine synthetic silk, its doors were real Neldian wood, and trophies of war adorned its walls. Admiral Jedik was, at the moment, eating a hearty meal underneath the severed head of one of his unlucky compatriots. “Friend of yours?” his prisoner asked.
Admiral Jedik looked up from his meal. A man in white prison attire sat across from him, the clothing he wore being the only reminder of his status on the ship. Once, he had issued orders from its bridge. Now, he was kept in its brig. “I have no enemies,” Jedik told him. “Is the food not to your liking?” He hadn’t eaten a bite since he was allowed in. He seemed utterly convinced that this was all part of some ruse, which it was, and he was just waiting for the other shoe to drop.
“It’s laced with truth drugs,” he scoffed. “I’m not a fool.”
“Let us switch places, then,” said Jedik. “If the food is drugged, I’ll eat from it as well.” The man agreed. The dining table was long, meant to seat the captain and his advisors, but it was small enough that the two could talk comfortably. They stood up and switched seats.
“What’s your game here, xeno?” the prisoner asked, chewing on a leg of some Neldian beast of burden. “What’s your play?”
“Oh, I’ve no play,” Jedik lied. “I simply wanted to lend credence to the broadcast your ship received earlier.”
“That’s a play,” scoffed the prisoner. “And it changes nothing. Neither my skills nor my ship will not be used against humanity’s best interests.” It wasn’t his ship anymore, but Jedik felt it wiser not to tell him that.
“Then let’s just talk for a bit,” said Jedik, with no response. “Oh, come now,” Jedik told him, “Let us engage in a contest of wills. Pit your superior human mind against mine.”
“I will not be mocked,” his prisoner replied coldly. “Be silent.”
“That’s a poor way to address your host,” said Admiral Jedik. “Would you prefer I leave you in the brig?”
“Yes. Better that than to swap words with a filthy animal. Mankind is master of the stars, mongrel, and do not forget that.”
“The stars are the birthright of those who claim them,” Jedik replied. “And we’ve done well for ourselves at that.” Silence. “Humor me for a moment, if you will.”
“I will not.”
Admiral Jedik sighed. It seemed to him that some people had no manners at all. “What would you have done, if I was your prisoner?”
“You know it as well as I.” Torture. Ineffective as an interrogation method, but it was kept in place nonetheless. Evil had to be maintained, and the law of the Alliance ensured it was maintained well enough. The use of torture was just one of the many ways it desensitized its subjects to their lives as cogs in a fascist machine.
“What if I were human?”
“Then you’d be a traitor, and you’d deserve the same fate as your xeno allies. Be silent, wretch.” Jedik would not.
“I have bested you,” he said. “Our fleets were relatively equal, and mine bested yours. Does this not make me your superior?” The man Jedik spoke to was a mere captain. The admiral of the fleet had perished with his command. But the point stood nonetheless.
“I am human, wretch,” the prisoner spat. “One true master of the galaxy, rightful heir to the stars in the sky, and a thousand other titles the greatest of your race could never hope to hold. Crush as many fleets as you wish, but never shall you rise to my height.”
“What makes you superior?” asked Jedik.
“I am human.”
“What makes humans superior?”
“We’ve ten worlds. Ten cradles. No other species can boast such a thing.”
“It does seem a bit small of a thing to start a war over, don’t you think?" asked Jedik. "Seems a bit petty in the grand scheme of things.”
“My kind was made master of the stars, not yours,” the prisoner spat. “The Humanity Codex decreed it.”
“If I wrote an Ierad Codex that said the opposite, would it be true?” asked Jedik. His prisoner was silent. “Exactly.”
“Mankind is more intelligent,” countered the prisoner. “More creative. This, among other facts, proves the Codex as true.”
In response, Jedik flicked out his talons. He cut a shred from the tablecloth, which was probably very expensive, and held it up. “You can’t do this.” The prisoner cringed. His tablecloth was definitely expensive. “And, might I add, I have no mental deficit. My mind is the equal of any human’s.” There was no response to that. “Would it still be just to treat me as lesser?”
“Your species are lesser,” the prisoner snapped, “even if you are not. On Neldia, we have a hive insect that builds mounds larger than some houses, but they are still insects. Still inferior.”
“And yet, if you had captured me, I would have been treated like any other of my species. Is that right?” Decades of rallying troops and arguing with politicians had made Admiral Jedik into a very eloquent speaker when he wanted to be. “Is that right?” Now, he was proving it.
“It’s the doctrine.”
“Is it right?” The prisoner shook his head no. “Then why do you follow it?” Jedik knew he was very close to winning over his enemy’s trust. So very close.
“I follow orders because it is my duty,” said the captain. Even in prison garb, at the mercy of his enemy, he sat up straight and ate with dignity. It was not hard to imagine this man in command of a warship. “You of all people should understand that.”
“Your duty is to the human race,” Jedik countered. “To advance its interests, and secure its future.” His prisoner nodded. He was beginning to see Jedik’s side of things. “The Alliance cannot do this any longer.” The man at the other end of the table was silent, deep in thought. Admiral Jedik helped him along. “Why do you think Admiral Dama joined our cause?”
“Is it true that your ships defended Earth?” asked the man.
“It is true,” said Jedik. “Even if Earth were not vital to the war effort, it is against my personal tenets to allow the slaughter of innocents. It would be better if only soldiers died, no?”
The other man was silent for a very long time. That was all right. Jedik could wait. “Agreed,” he finally said. “Am I to assume you’ve set this up to recruit me to your cause?”
Once a soldier of the Alliance was taken out of their natural environment, exposed to something other than a constant stream of dogmatic propaganda, it was very much possible to convince them to turn traitor. Though their former home would never accept them back, as their seditious ideas could not be allowed to spread, the intelligence and knowledge they provided was invaluable.
This was neither the first or the last time a man of such stature had been captured. It would, however, become the most important.
“Actually, yes,” said Jedik. “You see, many among us believe that you and yours cannot be redeemed. They feel it best to scour Neldia, Sevran, Gendia, and every Alliance world clean from the galactic map.” He spoke sympathetically, to win his enemy’s trust. “You have the power to prove them wrong. To serve humankind in the most crucial way imaginable.”
“Why in hell would I do that?” the prisoner asked. “We’re winning the war.”
“Are you?” Jedik bluffed. “In two years, we’ve gone from a squabbling flock of worlds to a coherent, organized fighting force. In two years, we’ve marshaled a navy that made Janus Ora himself tremble on his crimson throne. His armada may have armed itself well, but what of the Anesian one? Or the Gendian Armada? I tell you, given six months’ time, every ship in the Coalition fleet will have an arsenal that is the equal of mine.”
Jedik’s prisoner nodded. He knew that would be a formidable arsenal. “And you think ours will not?” he bluffed. This time, it was seen through.
“No.” Admiral Jedik tapped his talons on the table. He had barely touched his food. “If every ship of the fleet could mount such weapons, they would have. We’d have lost already.” This was a battle of wills, not warships, but his opponent now realized he was outclassed in both. “And five hundred ships cannot be everywhere at once. Admiral Dama saw the truth, captain.” Addressing the man by his rank was meant to build a rapport between them. Admiral Jedik knew many such tricks. “He knew humankind was not meant to rule alone.”
“Give me your word that civilians will not be harmed.”
“I swear it,” said Jedik. “Only legitimate military targets will be struck.”
“Put me on a channel with Admiral Dama,” his prisoner commanded. Jedik, seeing no other choice, obeyed. He made a few calls to Interion, where the newly repaired Peacemaker lay in drydock, and it was done. A projection of the traitorous former admiral Sheparda Dama, visible from the torso up and still clad in his crimson uniform, appeared from a projector in the ceiling and hovered in front of the captain.
“Sir.” He rose and raised his fist to his forehead in salute, moving purely out of custom. “Is it really you?”
“As always.” Dama returned the salute. “Do you doubt my resolve, Captain Ralg, or my allies?”
“Both, sir,” Captain Ralg confessed. He had served alongside Admiral Dama for many years, and that was the first time his trust had ever wavered. “How may I know it is you?” he asked again. Even through tinted lenses, he saw the Ierads as crafty foes.
The hologram of Admiral Dama thought for a moment. “You were overjoyed when you graduated from the Neldian School of Space Warfare,” he finally said. “You wanted to name your first command Tyrant, but I suggested Inexorable.” Captain Ralg’s face lit up, like a prisoner whose cell had just unlocked. “I felt it was a fitting name for a man of your stature. I now hope it is not.”
Captain Ralg rose and saluted again, this time much more enthusiastically. “Sir! You are real! By the nine worlds, you’re the noblest traitor I’ve ever laid eyes on,” he chuckled.
“Sometimes, treason is a noble crime.” Admiral Dama turned and stepped aside, his hologram moving similarly, and waved a hand at Admiral Jedik. “Yegel Jedik, admiral of the Republic fleet and undisputed king of the airless abyss,” he introduced the Ierad. “The only alien, nay, the only being I will admit I have been humbled by.”
“I half thought you were dead, sir. I hoped so. Better to die than betray humankind.” A pause. Captain Ralg reconsidered his stance. “Now, I hope the same goes for your armada.”
“Better death than treason, but better life than both,” said Admiral Dama. “This war is undecided, Calixus. One major move today can tip the scales irreversibly in one side’s favor.” He paused. “The only question remaining is which move you will choose to make.”
Calixus Ralg sat down. The room was silent for a very long time.
“I’ll do it,” he finally said. “Admiral Dama, if you wish me to act, I’ll jump into hell itself should that be my task.”
Admiral Jedik produced a data cache. He looked warmly upon the face of his newest ally. “Welcome to the right side.”
