2024.05.15 16:31 Istobri What company’s sponsorship patch would it absolutely infuriate you to see on your team’s jersey or helmet?

Hey all,
I know sponsorship patches on jerseys and helmets are generally despised, but what company’s patch would it absolutely infuriate you to see on your team’s uniform?
For me, as a Leafs fan from Southern Ontario, it might be 407 ETR. Someone on leafs made this comment, and on reflection, I agree.
407 ETR is the private company that operates the Highway 407 toll road in the Greater Toronto Area. In the late ‘90s, the conservative provincial government gave away this then brand-new freeway, meant to be a northern bypass of the horribly congested Highway 401, to private interests under a 99-year lease, who have since gouged commuters with outrageous prices and contributed to even further gridlock on the 401. It was always meant to be a toll road, but the fact that all revenues are going into the pockets of private interests is just infuriating beyond belief. It’s now majority owned by the Canada Pension Plan Investment Board, so I guess we could at least say 407 revenues are going to fund our social safety net, but still.
I’ve seen 407 ETR ads on the sidelines during TV broadcasts of the National Bank Open (major professional tennis tournament in Toronto held each summer). Can you imagine if they graced the historic blue and white Leafs sweater? Sacrilege!
Anyway, what corporate logo would it absolutely infuriate you to see on your team’s kit, and why?
Thanks!!

hello everyone :) i am a 19 y/o from eastern canada (you can use he/they for me) i dont really care about how old you are as long as we have some stuff in common! heres some stuff about me;
ive somewhat recently come to really love cooking, and ill always love discussing languages, countries, and cultures (even if they are not youmy own). i love collecting things (especially pokemon things, I LOVE POKEMON! i have a little tank collection too with a few tanker helmets as well!) but i have a decently sized rock/crystal collection too. i enjoy writing and drawing occasionally even though im in a bit of a love hate relationship with both of them right now i consider myself an open minded person, i like hearing other opinions and viewpoints on all sorts of things even if they do not match my own. i am down for discussing "deeper" things like politics, religion, mental health and the like as long as it stays respectful! very lgbtq friendly of course.
i love weird animals (hyenas, vultures, and rats are just a few of my favourites, as well as anything with hooves. ive had a handful of awesome rats, ah i miss them.) and weird music too! i often bounce between super random genres but i love all genres, and especially love hearing music in different languages, genres, and from different countries! ill listen to LITERALLY ANYTHING and probably enjoy it! seriously! but my chemical romance has a very special spot in my heart and always will <3.
here are some more of my assorted interests and things i like! for the games here, i dont really play them much anymore, but still consider myself a fan of them :]: btd6, the sims, madness combat, overwatch, genshin impact, POKEMON (again), LOVE LIVE, bandori, stardew valley, nintendo (esp wii/ds era), animal crossing, and other stuff too :].

2024.05.14 17:12 Tartanclad How Gates of Hell could make a Commonwealth faction truly unique

Recently Gates of Hell released the American faction and did a full overhaul of the German faction, leading to a pair of interesting factions with an incredible variety of historically authentic uniforms. You could zoom in on any of the squads and see the diverse uniforms depicted right down to the insignia on their caps and the regiments on their patches. Shermanator’s interview of Chase/Trudel (the lead animator & 3D human artist) gave me faith in the developer’s passion for the history and the game. This made me quite excited, because we have yet to see a British Commonwealth faction but there is some heavy implication that we can expect one in the future.
I wanted to make this thread, because I wanted to express my desire to see elements in the game that would make the Commonwealth faction a wealth of interesting units, uniforms and nationalities, particularly via the doctrines system that exists within the game. The intention is to throw in representatives across all the major nations of the British Commonwealth as well as some of the Allied armies-in-exile that came under British command. I also want to highlight some of the vehicles that are rarely mentioned in other games due to their obscure theatre or role. For the record, I'm not telling the devs what to do - I'm just making some example doctrines that I came up with as an example of the variety of units I'd love to see and making their inclusion plausible. Mostly to get the community talking.
I won’t talk about early war, partially because ‘Early war’ in Gates of Hell is largely post-Dunkirk, but also because I feel like what I am asking is still quite a lot just for one faction across two eras. I also I won’t be mentioning the more obvious or general units like Stuarts, Crusaders, Cromwells, Grants etc, as I expect them to be added nonetheless. It’s the vaguer aspects of the Commonwealth I wanted to talk about; the weird, wonderful and the diverse.
Mid War Doctrines
I think the mid-war should be largely inspired by the North African Campaigns, centred largely on the 8th Army and utilising the huge variety of cultures that fought within it. Extra bits can be added from the Italian campaign where the faction is lacking, and the Italian campaign can also be represented in the ‘Temperate’ skin for the mid-war faction. There are a lot of inspirations one can draw to create a variety of options for the Commonwealth player and each doctrine should draw from their unique aspects.
All-Round: Inspired by the Desert Rats, the 2nd Battle of El Alamein and Operation Crusader this one balances the various aspects of the other doctrines while keeping it unique. I’d like to see the Infantry include British Desert Rats Infantry, 2nd New Zealand Infantry, & 1st South African Infantry. I’d also like to see South African Marmon-Herrington Armoured Cars (multiple variants) as an early-battle option, plenty of the more common tanks and maybe the Bishop as a slow but mobile artillery piece. As a special call-in, we could probably include the Free French Legionaries as a powerful assault unit, just to really complete the variety in this division.
Defensive: Inspired by the Siege of Tobruk, this doctrine should primarily represent the Australians. Variations of the Australian 9th Division troops as infantry alongside minor British elements with a heavy emphasis on field engineers, emplacements and field guns. Defensive doctrine could also include RAF Regiment infantry, RAF 20mm Oerlikon guns, RAF Rolls Royces, India Pattern Carriers (from the Indian 18th Division), air strikes and, as a special unit, they could even have captured Italian tanks from the 6th Australian Division Cavalry Regiment! As a defensive doctrine, they should also have access to the best mid-war field guns, including the rare (but historical) ’Pheasant’ 17/25 Pounder Field Gun.
Offensive: Inspired by the Battle of Tunisia and Operation Torch, I think this one should show off the might of the UK’s heavier vehicles in the latter stages of the African campaign, particularly the Churchill III, Sherman III, the Priest 105mm and the Stuart Command Tank, alongside the more standard British tank options. As for infantry options, we can include Indian troops of the 4th Infantry Division (India), Gurkhas, and a motorised unit of 22nd Guards Infantry. I would also add the British Commandos in this division - partly because they were involved in Operation Torch, but also because they had an iconic impact on the mid-war (outside of Africa) that it would be a pity not to add them.
Irregular: This one would be quite unique in mid-war as it is effectively the light vehicle special forces doctrine. Although some standard British units would form the basis of the army, they would have access to a variety of assets representing the Long Range Desert Group; Chevrolet trucks with mounted Vickers MGs, Boys AT rifles, twin 303 Brownings or even Bofors and captured 20mm Breda guns! ‘Bamtam’ jeeps with twin Vickers Ks or 303 Brownings. The transport and logistics would be different too, using the Marmon-Herrington 6-ton Heavy Truck or the White 1064 10-ton. Other unique special call-ins would include an LRDG WACO Recon plane and the SAS (armed with the Lewes bomb). The downside to this doctrine, however, is that imagine it to be much lighter on armoured support, relying mostly on towed guns for its heavy firepower.
Other Units: I’ve tried to use inspirations from specific parts of the war to get a rounded but also diverse array of units, but there are loads of obscure units across the mid-war that I’d love to see; the Priest 105mm SPG, the AEC Deacon Gun Carrier, the Daimler Dingo, the Humber Light Reconnaissance, and so on.
That is as much as I want to say on mid-war without labouring the point. I’m sure there’s interesting things I’ve missed accidentally, and I’m afraid there’s some I have missed on purpose. For example, I considered the Australian Matilda Hedgehog, but it turned out to be late war and never used. I also considered the Greek and the Czech Division, but I think I’ve already stretched it too far as regards voice acting alone without adding units that, as distinguished their service might be, are just too obscure without adding anything extra - appearance or gameplay. That said, my hat would go off to the devs if they achieved that.
Late War Doctrines
Here we get to represent the Commonwealth units from Operation Overlord up until Operation Varsity.
All-Round: The quintessential British doctrine, combining bog-standard infantry with hardy tanks and a decent array of equipment. Partially based on Gold Beach, but also Operation Varsity/Plunder towards the end of the war, I would personally give them 50th (Northumbrian) Infantry, RAF Regiment Gunners, RAF Humber Light AC, Churchill AVRE, the Cruiser Mk. VIII Challenger and the Comet. Maybe give them some 6th Airlanding troops and 1st Canadian Parachute Infantry as a reference to the Normandy paratroopers if we feel they need more skilled infantry.
Offensive: The Canadian Doctrine - mostly inspired by the First Canadian Army in Normandy with elements of their experiences later on (including the Battle of the Schelt and Operation Veritable) with the doctrine largely focused on armoured assault infantry. They’ll look quite unique compared to the British because their uniforms were greener and they were the first to use the British-designed Mk.III helmet at D-Day. Troops of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division as standard, supported by assault infantry. Eventually, armoured infantry can spawn in Buffalos (used at the Battle of the Schelt) and, as a special call-in, Ram Kangaroo APCs (sporting an armoured MG turret). The Otter armoured car would be an early call-in, with M4A1 Sherman Grizzly tanks as well as Ram IIs available in the standard tank tab. Some unique but limited special call-ins would include the Skink AA tank (of which 2 saw historical combat in Normandy) as well as a skilled sniper wielding the Ross rifle.
Defensive: Just as the US Defensive doctrine features the 101st Airborne (no doubt inspired by the Battle of Bastogne), the British Defensive doctrine can feature the British Airborne - particularly based on the defense of Arnhem Bridge in the Netherlands as part of Market Garden. Infantry units can include the 52nd (Lowland) Infantry, 1st Airborne Paratroopers, 1st Airlanding Infantry, Parachute Squadron Royal Engineers and 1st (Polish) Independent Paratroopers (who are distinctive with their grey berets). Armoured units can include the Tetrarch and the M22 Locust. To suit their defensive doctrine, they should get some decent guns and I’m thinking the airborne jeep-towed 20mm Polsten Gun, airborne 17th Pounder as well as (in a departure from the Parachute theme) the BL 7.2-inch howitzer. The Patchett sub-machine gun could make an appearance here too.
Irregular: Based on Sword Beach, Commandos and the 79th Armoured Division, with the more unusual units in the British arsenal. Probably with 3rd Infantry Division Infantry as standard, this unit could have access to No.41 (Royal Marine) Commandos, Fusilier Marines Commandos (based on No.4 Commando’s assault on Ouestreham), the Centaur Mk.IV QF 95mm, the Sherman DD, the Churchill Crocodile and Royal Engineer Assault Teams deployed in the cute Terrapin 4-ton Amphibious. If we want to be really wacky, we could even add the M3 Grant CDL (an unarmed searchlight tank) for armoured spotting, similar to the 150cm Flakscheinwerfer searchlight.
Other Units: Further unique units that would fit in any one (or multiple) of these divisions (based on balance) include the Land Mattress Rocket Launcher, the Loyd Carrier, the Universal Carrier WASP (flamethrower), the Sexton SPG, Sherman Firefly, the Archer TD, Achilles TD, the Priest Kangaroo, the Morris C8, Staghound and so on. There are SO many strange and obscure British vehicles that don’t often see the light of day, but would be perfect for Gates of Hell.
Post-release Doctrines -
More of a final thought than anything else, but if/when the Japanese get added into the game, I’d love to see a fifth doctrine to represent the British 14th Army to match the Japanese. A doctrine that is mostly comprised of Indian infantry and Indian tanks, with representation from the East/West African Divisions, Gurkhas and the British 2nd or 36th Infantry Divisions. Special call-ins could include the Chindits (using Thompsons and the Jungle Carbine) and paratroopers of the 50th Indian Parachute Brigade. If we’re feeling generous enough to allow the doctrine to encompass the Pacific Islands as well, we could also include an Australian squad armed with the Owen SMG, South Pacific Scouts, the Matida Frog (flamethrower) and the Matilda QF 3-Inch.
Conclusion: I apologise for such a long read. But I hope we see how a bit of ambition could really help the Commonwealth stand out and be worthy of the variety seen in the other factions since their overhaul. While the Germans have Spanish soldiers in their ranks, the Commonwealth can see the UK, Canada, India, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Poland, and France (and technically Nepal) all get some recognition. While the German Kriegsmarine and Luftwaffe stand out on the field, the Commonwealth might get the distinctive blue battledress of the RAF Regiment, or the long white tunics of the Foreign Legion. We would see such a variety of hats including pith helmets, berets, kepis, dastars, keffiyehs and slouch hats. Some units, like the LRDG vehicles, might even stand out as unique from any of the nations already in the game. It’s a lot of colourful uniforms, a lot of voices and a lot of strange and wonderful machines.
However, it does come with its downsides. Firstly, Africa and Europe are such dramatically different theatres that their version of mid & late war are incredibly different to one another. So much so that the depth of variety might make the faction too big, making it a lot of effort for the art department (especially with uniforms changing for the map’s climate. Imagine making skins for temperate, desert AND snow). The second issue is whether France is getting its own faction in future iterations of the game (the French flag appears in the loading screen during Axis vs Allies games). The final (and probably biggest) issue is voice acting. I’m no expert on games development, but I gather that getting enough voice actors for a faction is hard enough as it is without having to accurately represent 9 countries at once. I would love to hear the developer’s thoughts on the matter - whether such a project is within the game’s scope and if they have the ambition to take it this far.
Do let me all know what you think as well.

2024.05.14 15:06 Hannibal-SOS best ways to fight zombies in urban areas

Imagine the survivors decide that they want to take back a big chunk of a city. There is about 400 of them qho can fight and they can craft melee weapons and ammo for guns. Considering using bombs or misslies is prohibited(because we need the buildings to be in one piece so we can use them) and most of the streets are jammed with broken cars so you can't use tanks or armored cars easily. In your opinion what would be the best way to clear out the city from the zombies?
I had the idea of luring some of them to a street by a helicopter or drone blocking the exit with a bus then using weld casting tall iron shields together like a wall with spaces in to use long spears but narrow enough so the zombies cant pass to kill them they can also have some people in the buildings to shoot arrows as cover. If U manage to get around 50 or 100 of them each time it can work if people wear helmets, gloves, tough leather jackets wrap sth aroung their neckd so they can't be easily bitten. Consider They can't use guns in a city bcs it's too loud.
Side note: we are takling about world war Z zombies, and leabing them to die won't work. And for some people who say why they want to take back the city its because they are over 5000 people now plus there are still a lot of useful things left in the city because most people who looted the stores either died trying or just died some where else in the city. Some places didn't even got looted.

2024.05.14 04:09 meunier-benoit Seeking Opportunities to Kickstart My Journey as a Machinist in Alberta!

\*TL;DR:** 46-year-old bilingual French Canadian UX designer turned tradesman, looking for any machinist opportunities in Alberta. Obsessed with machining, eager to find a mentor and start anew.*
I'm reaching out to tap into the collective expertise and networks here in hopes of finding a mentor, team, and opportunities in Alberta as I embark on an exciting new career path.
Here's a little about me:
I'm a 46-year-old French Canadian from Montreal (fully bilingual, don't worry) who thrived in the digital world as a UX designer for 30 years. However, two years ago, I found a new passion that altered my life's trajectory--working with metal and mechanical engineering. Why the drastic change? I fell in love with the tangible satisfaction of building and working hard with my hands. This newfound love led me to go full-time back to school to dive deep into welding at École des métiers de la construction de Montréal for 18 months while selling consulting agency.
Welding was my first step, and now I'm obsessed with machining. Despite not having the tools yet, I've been voraciously absorbing knowledge through all the books and all the videos. My journey also includes 3D printing, which served as my gateway drug into a whole new world of design and CAD. I'm currently earning certifications with Autodesk Fusion 360, enabling me to design parts and create detailed plans, even while working remotely at a campground.
But why Alberta? My wife, our 9-year-old homeschooled son, and I took a bold step last year--we sold everything to explore Canada and the USA in our fifth wheel RV, searching for the perfect place to call home. Among many places, Alberta draws us in with its people, landscapes, and endless opportunities.
I know this is a long shot, but I'm looking for a place where I can contribute with my broad spectrum of skills and relentless work ethic ... even starting from nothing. I seek a mentor, a team, or any opportunity to immerse myself in the world of machining.
We're heading for Texas again this summer because winter in an RV is nearly impossible, but once we're back, Alberta is our next destination. If you know of any opportunities, companies, or individuals in Alberta who might be interested in a dedicated newcomer with a unique background and an insatiable drive to learn, I would love to connect.
Thank you for taking the time to read my story. I'm excited about the possibility of starting this new chapter in Alberta with my family. If my journey resonates with you and you see potential for collaboration, please send me a private message—I’d love to start a conversation.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

2024.05.13 21:57 Helaton-Prime Game Feedback

Take this feedback with a grain of salt, I'm in the level 70's and usually play on 5-7 (with occasional forays into 8/9 when the team is willing). I consider 7 to be casual difficult (sometimes things go to hell, but usually have smooth runs, while Impossible/Helldive is usually full chaotic).
The game is amazing and based on past history, I think Pilestedt will keep the ship righted regardless of the doom n gloom on Reddit.
This is focused on a few things for the TLDR'ers:

I love this game, reddit gives it such a negative light though recently.

Sound Problems
Please do something about silent bots and bugs that weigh 2 tons sneaking up on you silently. Stalkers and Hunters, I can understand. If you make a cloaking bot, I can understand that too. Hulks and Devastators should not be absolutely silent.

Weapon Balancing into the Storytelling
Please keep all this in the Story. Doesn't matter whether its Sony, new content or Balancing. Go all in on the storytelling. Eruptor, crossbow,
Example: Purifier isn't great. Create the story:
It was found that the supplier responsible for fabricating the PLAS-101 Purifier Hyperchordium Charging Module was infiltrated by Automaton sympathizers several months ago contaminating the supply line for replacement parts. As the weapon has been in use in larger quantities and questionable replacement parts are now more common, the Purifier is under performing in the eyes of the front line and brass. The only other supplier for these parts is located in the foundries on Menkent, currently occupied by the Automaton menace. Liberate the planet and restore the supply line.
If something is over performing like the Quasar, then integrate it into Lore in the same way.
The Overabundium veins and stockpiles built into the LAS-99 Quasar's crystal focusing matrix have run out. Fortunately, R&D has managed to create an artificial crystal but its ability to focus and disperse heat between shots is greatly degraded.
Then you could have planets where Overabundium deposits are found (Ore Survey missions for example) and any missions on that planet will have faster cooldown times.
An Overabundium vein has been located on Fenrir II. While not enough to replace the current sythetic crystal matrix in the LAS-99 Quasar, it has been decided that Fenrir II will receive priority utilization of this natural resource for its campaign.

Lean into Themes for the Warbonds
Keep going with the themed warbonds like Cutting Edge. Polar Patriots missed it for a few reasons.
The formula is already good for warbonds:
Each year have the October warbond be special for Liberty day (5 pages instead of 3).
Crew Served Weapons
Please allow anyone to service as weapon crew from that weapon person's backpack. (They can pull from their own pack first if they have the same weapon pack.)

Environmental (Firenados)
Please tweak the frequency of Firenados or lower the duration they swarm on the map. Getting 4-5 storms a mission and it takes 2+ minutes for them (and their lingering flames) to finally dissipate means that a good portion of the mission is spent avoiding these terrors. If they came down, moved around for 30s and went away with the current frequency, it wouldn't be as bad.

Booster Balancing
Most of the boosters are ok but there's two (good and bad) that could use a little tweaking/reworking.
Hellpod Space Optimization
This has become an essential item that nearly every squad has to take. Change it to a resupply buff that gives an extra 2 resupply (6) from a resupply stratagem instead of 4. (Take out the pedestal and some spaces between the resupply boxes and looks like you could fit an extra 1 on each side.)
Put the original benefit in the armor:

Super Destroyer Bridge Upgrade > Hellpod Supply Optimization
For the original 'max ammo/nades/stims' of the Hellpod Space Optimization, make that the next upgrade in Bridge Super Destroyer show a welding guy soldering a supply box to the hellpod. You can pick up the resupply manually when you land. (aka All your reinforces come with a supply box.)

Flexible Reinforcement Budget
Allow this to regenerate Reinforcements overtime during the entire mission. 1 reinforcement every 8 minutes (you can regenerate even if you're not at 0 reinforcements) and keep the -10% reinforcement time if you reach 0. This keeps it useful throughout the mission rather than when everything is already almost lost.

2024.05.13 14:26 sonofabutch No game today, so let's remember a forgotten Yankee: Horace Clarke

"I played major league baseball for parts of 10 years, and I played in the magnificent city of New York, and as a child in St. Croix that was beyond dreams. Yes, I am a happy man." -- Horace Clarke
The worst stretch of Yankee baseball since the Highlander days, the mid 60s to the mid 70s, is remembered by those who lived through it as the Horace Clarke Era. Unfairly or not, the bespectacled switch-hitting middle infielder from the U.S. Virgin Islands came to symbolize all that was wrong with the Yankees in those sad years.
Horace Meredith Clarke grew up on the island of St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He was just the fifth player from the U.S. Virgin Islands to play in the majors, and the first Yankee. His father had grown up playing cricket, and because there were no youth baseball leagues on the island, young Horace played softball. He said he didn't see his first baseball game until around age 13, when he saw some U.S. Navy sailors playing.
“We were poor kids in St. Croix. We played on a field which was right on the ocean and had no fences. We couldn’t afford baseballs. So the coach made the lefthanded batters hit righthanded and the righthanded batters hit lefthanded. This was so they couldn’t hit the ball so far. It saved us from losing the baseballs in the ocean.”
Clarke was spotted by a Yankee scout in the Caribbean and assigned to the lowest run of the Yankee farm system -- the Kearney Yankees in Class D ball. Imagine being an 18-year-old kid from St. Croix in the Caribbean, and arriving in Kearney, Nebraska in the spring of 1958. The culture shock must have been overwhelming. Maybe not surprisingly, Clarke hit a disappointing .225/.322/.283 in 187 at-bats. He said the biggest adjustment wasn't the cold weather, but night games played under the lights, something he'd never done before.
The following year Horace was in the Florida State League, and he thrived in the warmer weather, hitting .293/.375/.366 in 571 at-bats. He also stole 34 bases that year. The year after that, he was back up north, playing for Fargo in the Northern League, and hit .307/.389/.369 in 537 at-bats. The following year was Amarillo in the Texas League, where he hit .300/.364/.429.
Then the next three years in the International League, where he hit .281/.345/.352 in 1,494 at-bats while playing shortstop and second base.
But despite Clarke's promise, he was blocked by Bobby Richardson. By the time Clarke had reached Triple-A at age 24 in 1963, the 27-year-old Richardson had already been a four-time All-Star, a two-time Gold Glove winner, and had won three World Series rings... plus the MVP for the 1960 World Series, the only time in baseball history a player for the losing team won the award!
But the Yankees knew Richardson was planning on retiring, so they kept Clarke waiting in the wings. He opened the year with the Toledo Mud Hens, then the Yankees' Triple-A team, and then after a month he finally got the call to the show.
Fifty-nine years ago today, on May 13, 1965, Clarke was sent up to the plate in the 7th inning as a pinch hitter to make his major league debut in a game the Yankees were losing, 4-1, to the Boston Red Sox in Fenway Park.
Clarke, facing Dave Morehead, beat out an infield single. It was a promising beginning. But, as if scripted to be symbolic of his career, Clarke's success was short-lived as the next batter bounced into a fielder's choice. Forced out at second base, Clarke watched the rest of the game from the dugout. The next day he'd get the start and go 0-for-4.
Hitting .250/.298/.269 at the end of June as a utility infielder, Clarke was sent back down to Toledo for two months to get more regular playing time. It helped. When he returned on September 3 -- coincidentally, also against the Red Sox -- he went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Overall that month, Clarke hit .273/.298/.327, and for the season, .262/.298/.299 in 115 plate appearances. But the Yankees, the reigning A.L. champions for the past five seasons, finished a shocking 77-85, all the way in sixth place.
That off-season, Phil Linz -- the harmonica playing utility infielder -- was traded to the Phillies, opening up a roster spot for Clarke. Richardson, though only 31, had told the Yankees he would retire at the end of the 1966 season, and the Yankees wanted him to mentor Clarke as his successor.
Clarke started just seven games over the first half, but a series of injuries forced him into regular service. Over the second half, he played almost every day, hitting .276/.334/.404 in 300 plate appearances. He was mostly used at shortstop, where his defense wasn't great, but in 16 games at second base he looked good enough that the Yankees were confident he could be a regular there. Yankee fans were no doubt a little sad when Richardson officially announced to the press on August 31 that it was his last season, but at least we knew who would be playing second base the following year.
Indeed, second base was the least of the Yankees' problems. New York finished dead last at 70-89 in 1966, the team's worst performance since 1925, as injuries fell Mickey Mantle, Roger Maris, Elston Howard, and Whitey Ford.
Entering 1967 as the starting second baseman, Clarke hit a solid .272/.321/.316 (94 OPS+) in 633 plate appearances while leading the league in fielding percentage, assists, and range factor as a second baseman. He also stole 21 bases in 25 tries, a second-best .840 SB%. His 3.7 bWAR that year was better than any season Richardson ever had -- his career high was 3.2 bWAR in 1962.
The following year, the Yankees finished 83-79 -- above .500 for the first time in four seasons -- but a whopping 34.5 games out. Clarke had one of the worst years of his career, hitting .230/.258/.254 (60 OPS+) as he played through injuries all year.
He rebounded in 1969 to .285/.339/.467 (101 OPS+), with 33 stolen bases. It was, statistically, the best season of his career (3.9 bWAR). But once again the Yankees were terrible -- 28.5 games out.
In 1970, Clarke again disappointed, hitting .251/.286/.309 (68 OPS+). The Yankees won 93 games that year, but it amounted to naught as the Orioles ran away with the pennant, going 108-54 to win it by 15 games. In fact, it was pretty much over by July, with the Yankees 7 games out at the All-Star break.
It was around this time that Yankee fans began focusing their frustration on Clarke. One New York sportswriter routinely referred to him as "Horrible Horace". Miscast as a leadoff man -- he had a career .308 OBP -- and criticized for "bailing out" on double plays, manager Ralph Houk years later offered a tepid defense of his second baseman:
“I know I got a lot of criticism for playing Horace Clarke as much as I did, but he was a lot better ballplayer than anyone gave him credit for. He did a lot of things good but nothing great, and that was his problem. Besides, I didn’t have anyone else.”
The lack of a replacement was certainly an issue. In 1971, there was talk in The Sporting News about a prospect named Fred Frazier being the heir apparent to Clarke at second base. That year, Frazier hit a disappointing .261/.316/.313 in Triple-A; the next year, .216/.302/.281. The year after that, he was in the Orioles organization. He never made it out of the minors.
In fact, Clarke was the only constant in the Yankee infield in the late 1960s and early 1970s. The Yankees during the, ahem, Horace Clarke Era had holes everywhere, with a revolving door at first base, third base, and shortstop. For five years, from 1967 to 1971, Clarke was the Opening Day starter at second base; during that same stretch, there were five different third basemen, five different third basemen, and three different shortstops. Between 1967 and 1973, he started 1,017 games at second base, or 90% of all Yankee games.
But that, explained Yankees PR man Marty Appel, was kind of the problem. "Fans especially didn’t like the second baseman, the beleaguered Horace Clarke, whose major flaw seemed to be longevity. It wasn’t his fault that no one better came along, and he was a better player than the fans gave him credit for. But because he was out there, year after year, he came to stand for this disappointing run by the club."
"I always did my best. I always played as hard as I could. I never was concerned about how the fans reacted to me." -- Horace Clarke
The following year Clarke hit .250/.321/.318 in 696 plate appearances, but the Yankees again were out of it, finishing 82-80 in 1971.
Yankee fans had been miserable since 1965, but frustration with the team in general -- and Clarke in particular -- reached a boiling point in 1972. It had been seven years since the Yankees had been in the post-season, and 1972 was the first year the Yankees had the playoffs within our grasp since winning the pennant in 1964. (The "closest and latest" the Yankees had been since the 1965 season was 9 games out of 1st place on September 8, 1970.)
On September 12, 1972, the Yankees were a half-game out of 1st place at 74-64, with 17 games left to go in the season. The Red Sox were in 1st at 73-62, the Orioles tied with New York at 74-64, and the Tigers a half-game behind at 73-64. Over the rest of the season, the Yankees went a heartbreaking 5-12, while the Tigers won 13 out of 19 to win the A.L. East.
There was plenty of blame to go around for that collapse, but Yankee fans were particularly irate at Clarke, who hit .225/.267/.296 during those final 17 games.
To his credit, Clarke never complained about the boos from fans or the criticism in the press. As quoted by Dick Young in the New York Daily News in 1972:
"Sure, I would feel bad when I saw in the papers that, 'the Yankees can never win the pennant with that guy at second base.' But why get mad. I figure that's his opinion, and he's entitled to it. I must have been able to do something. Don't tell me a ballplayer can fool a manager for seven years."
Years later, Thurman Munson said his adversarial relationship with the media was based on how Horace Clarke was treated.
In 1973, the 34-year-old Clarke hit .263/.317/.308 (80 OPS+), his defense was no longer among the league leaders, and the Yankees were once again double-digit games behind by Labor Day.
It was finally time to move on. That off season, the Yankees acquired 23-year-old utility infielder Jim Mason from the Texas Rangers and installed him as the starting shortstop for the upcoming 1974 season; Gene Michael, the Yankees' on-again, off-again shortstop since 1968, was moved to second base; and Clarke to the bench. It wasn't exactly an earth-shattering move -- Mason was coming off a season in which he hit .206/.273/.290, and Michael .225/.270/.278. If anything, the two represented a substantial downgrade from Clarke's numbers. (By bWAR the previous season, Clarke was still the best option of the three, 0.6 compared to Mason's -0.7 and Michael's -0.9.)
After hitting .234/.294/.255 in 53 plate appearances as a pinch hitter and spot starter, on May 31, 1974, the Yankees finally ended the Horace Clarke Era by selling his contract to the San Diego Padres along with minor league pitcher Lowell Palmer for $25,000. At the time of the deal, Clarke was still the Yankees' best option at second base as Mason was hitting .214/.287/.307 and Michael a putrid .134/.224/.179!
Six weeks later, the Yankees tried to address their second base problem again by acquiring former All-Star Sandy Alomar from the Angels. Alomar, who fathered major leaguers Sandy Jr. and Roberto, played for the Yankees for the next two and a half seasons, hitting .248/.287/.302... again, worse than Horace's career average of .256/.308/.313.
And yet getting rid of Horace Clarke immediately turned around the Yankees' fortunes. With Horace, the Yankees were 23-27, the worst record in the American League; without him, a second-best 66-46. New York finished 89-73, just two games behind the Baltimore Orioles.
The Yankees finally found a solution to the second base problem on December 11, 1975, trading previously forgotten Yankee Doc Medich to the Pirates for Dock Ellis, Ken Brett, and a 20-year-old prospect named Willie Randolph.
Meanwhile, Clarke went to San Diego and hit .189/.255/.200 in 99 plate appearances. He was released at the end of the season and retired. He was a frequent attendee at Yankee Old Timers' Games, and promoted baseball in the U.S. Virgin Islands. He died at age 81 on August 5, 2020, from complications due to Alzheimer's disease.
The Clarke Side
"I remember the first game I played in Yankee Stadium in 1965. There were more than 40,000 people in the stands. I had just come from my country where there are 30,000 people in the entire country. That was some adjustment." -- Horace Clarke
Overall, Horace Clarke hit .257/.309/.315 in 5,144 plate appearances as a Yankee. His numbers aren't quite as bad as they appear, as he played during one of the lowest offense eras since deadball... an 84 OPS+. That ranks him ahead of fondly-remembered Yankees like Shelley Duncan (81 OPS+), Rick Cerone (80 OPS+), Miguel Cairo (80 OPS+), Bucky Dent (72 OPS+), and... Bobby Richardson (77 OPS+). And while many complained about his defense, his defensive metrics -- such as we have for his era -- indicate he was at least an average defender. He led the league in range factor three times, in fielding percentage once, in assists six times, and in double plays twice.
People tend to think about Clarke -- if they think about him at all -- as either a terrible player, representative of the teams he played on, or a good player who was wasted on bad teams. The truth is somewhere in the middle. As sportswriter Maury Allen said, he was "an average big-leaguer on below-average Yankee teams."
And in fact, Clarke's 16.0 career bWAR as a Yankee is twice as much value as the player he replaced, Bobby Richardson (8.0 bWAR). But Richardson was a fan favorite, while Clarke was scorned. But of course... Richardson won three rings. And Yankee fans love a winner!
"New York is New York. You don’t win, you’re going to hear about it. I was in the middle." -- Horace Clarke
Had Clarke come along a few years earlier and been part of the early 1960s dynasty, he might be remembered fondly as a scrappy infielder, a Tony Kubek or a Bucky Dent or a Scott Brosius -- a good but not great player who had some memorable moments.
Instead, Horace Clarke defines an era of futility.

2024.05.13 06:37 RecommendationLow801 First attempt at Space Marine Successor Chapters

First Attempts at Successor Chapters
Just a preface before the stories. This contains the outlines for my homebrew space marine chapters called the Galvin Knights and the Luciferians. These are 2/3 chapters within a short story I'm writing about an invasion of the Tyranids. Any and all feedback is welcome.
Galvin Knights
In the furthest reaches of the Segmentum Tempestus lies the death world of Galvios, a harsh and unforgiving planet battered by relentless electrical storms and marred by massive destroyed Hive cities. Here, amidst its hard landscape, stands fortress-monastery “Rhebar” of the Galvin Knights, an Iron Hands successor chapter known for its meticulous attention to detail and ruthless machine-like efficiency.
Galvios is not alone in the system, for orbiting it is the Mechanicum Forge-Moon of Castellum Ryzarian, a bastion of knowledge and innovation where the Galvin Knights have forged a close alliance with the adepts of Mars. It is within this union of man and machine that the chapter's most closely guarded secret resides.
When a battle brother of the Galvin Knights falls in the line of duty, their souls are not consigned to the warp. Instead, they are interred within the sacred halls of the Autorus Intelligius, where the ancient rites of the Mechanicum are performed. Through the melding of mind and steel, the fallen warrior's consciousness is transferred into a cybernetic host, a warrior reborn as a Galvin Sentry, stripping them of all humanity but imbuing them with abominable will and unwavering loyalty to the God Emperor.
Since their inception, the Knights have begun to become less codex complaint, welding numbers well over the chapter limit.
the Galvin Knights' secrets do not end there. Led by their formidable First Captain, Varaan Maneur (Manor) , a towering figure clad in Indomitus terminator armor, the chapter boasts a unique retinue known as the Watchful Eye. Composed of the four strongest and most technologically adept Astartes of the chapter, the Watchful Eye are masters of Surveillance and Raids when operating in smaller numbers but excel at Siege and Counter Siege at large. First Captain Maneur and fellow Members of the Eye can communicate with a version of Lingua-technis in a form of a relay system, allowing for them to command with those of the Galvin Sentry.
Tasked with the defense of Segmentum Tempestus against the relentless advance of the Tyranid Hive Fleets, the Galvin Knights metallic armor shines the brightest. When planets are besieged by the Tyranids, the Galvin Knights rush from their bastions and bunkers with uncaring determination. Meeting the fleet head on the Knights stem the lines of the xeno menace head-on and engage them with hordes of their own.
In the face of the Tyranid menace, the Galvin Knights stand as a symbol of strength and guardians of humanity, their seemingly iron souls forged in the crucible of war and bound by the ancient pact between man and machine. And as long as there are enemies of the Imperium to face, they will continue to fight, their resolve unbreakable and their loyalty unwavering.
Luciferians
The Luciferians, a successor chapter of the Blood Angels, are a formidable force within the Imperium, led by their enigmatic and feared Chapter Master, known by several titles - "The Fallen," "The Visage of Blood," and "The Blood Angel of Death" - The Archbishop Lucifer MorningStar. Lucifer MorningStar is a smaller Astarte known for his exceptional speed, infiltration skills, mastery of melee combat, and terror tactics that strike fear into the hearts of his enemies.
Clad in modified Mark X Phobos armor, Lucifer MorningStar stands out with mechanical tubes weaving throughout his armor, pumping blood through his body, symbolizing the intense connection the Luciferians have to life-giving essence. His armor is predominantly red with silver plating, and he often forgoes wearing a helmet, allowing his flowing brown hair to cascade in the wind. With his piercing brown eyes and fair skin, Lucifer MorningStar possesses a captivating and handsome appearance.
Unlike their Blood Angels progenitors, the Luciferians do not suffer from the Black Rage. However, they possess an intense need for blood and are susceptible to the Red Thirst, which drives them to seek out the life essence of their enemies with unwavering ferocity. This unquenchable thirst for blood teeters on the edge of losing control to their primal instincts, making them a force to be reckoned with on the battlefield.
The chapter is currently in the process of rebuilding and recovering from a devastating loss suffered during the Tebir Campaign, a fierce conflict against the savage Orks. The loss was primarily due to Lucifer MorningStar and the 1st, 3rd, and 6th Companies falling victim to an unknown force while trapped within a fortress named the Bastion of Wrath. In their thirst for vengeance and blood, they abandoned tactics and discipline, leading to their downfall. The only survivor was Lucifer himself, who, in the aftermath of the battle, shed his blood-stained armor and laid upon the peak of the fortress. For 40 days and 40 nights, he wept and cried out, facing an internal struggle against the temptations of Khorne, the Chaos God of Blood and War. It was during this period that he reaffirmed his loyalty to the Imperium and resisted the lure of chaos, emerging from the ordeal with an unbreakable resolve to rebuild his chapter and lead his brethren with renewed discipline and control.
The Luciferians were created during the 23rd Founding, a response to the increasing threats posed by xenos in the Segmentum Obscurus. Tasked with defending humanity against these alien adversaries, the Luciferians carry on the noble traditions and genetic heritage of their Blood Angels forebears.
The Luciferians don blood-red armor, adorned with silver and bronze trim, symbolizing their connection to their Blood Angels lineage. Each Astartes bears a black right knee pad, displaying a unique number denoting their respective company within the chapter. Astartes initiates are called the Elohim and are organized into groups of five or ten, led by a veteran called a Seraphim, forming the 10th Company. The Seraphim are distinguished by their silver helmets, symbolizing their leadership role within the company.
In addition to the Seraphim, the Luciferians employ a specialized group known as the Ophanium. These skilled warriors lead the Seraphim within other companies, specializing in different forms of combat, ensuring the chapter's diverse capabilities are utilized to their fullest potential. The chapter also boasts a significant number of chaplains who have dedicated themselves to studying and understanding the Red Thirst, as well as a strong contingent of apothecaries who are responsible for delivering blood across the company.
Rumors circulate that the Chapter Master, Lucifer MorningStar, engages in a ritualistic practice of draining the blood of serfs in a massive bathhouse-style pool, where he and his Honor Guard bathe in it. This macabre ceremony is believed to serve as a method to slow the Red Thirst.
The Luciferians have forged alliances with various factions within the Imperium, particularly the Inquisition and the Galvin Knights and Emerald Stars chapters. Lucifer MorningStar's path crossed with Galatyn Barden during their service to the Deathwatch, where they utilized their skills to root out Xenos Cults and dismantle Xenos invasions. However, at the start of the Tebir Campaign, Lucifer was summoned back to his chapter, where he discovered that most of the leadership had secretly succumbed to the Black Rage and were put down. This tragic event took many lives and almost led the chapter to extinction on Tebir Tertius. Hidden records indicate that Lucifer believes an Inquisitor directed more Orks to the system as a test by the Emperor himself to determine the chapter's worthiness to shape the future.

2024.05.13 05:44 randysarcophagus [TOMT][MUSIC VIDEO][2000s] Music video showing a man in a welding helmet running through office spaces

Roughly 15 or so years ago (25 now for reference), I was staying up late at night with my grandpa watching some kind of documentary on the Blue Man Group. Near the end of it there was a CGI music video showing a man wearing a suit and tie running through rows of cubicles until he eventually stops, stares at the screen, and removes his helmet only to reveal more helmets as he keeps taking them off as the camera zooms out of the building he's in. I want to say the music itself was a grungy/alt rock track not disimilar from Placebo and bands like them. I've been trying to find it for years with no luck. Anyone else see something like this?

2024.05.12 13:09 silvered12 I'm going to start working with steel (need some help)

It's all in the title, I'm going to start by crimping the edges of shields, making Seaux crusader helmets and practising shaping the material with a hammer (something I've done before, but in a different field). I have one question in particular, how thick should the plate be, for a helmet for example? 0.75 mm, 2 mm? What type of steel holds up best? Is welding allowed if I don't know how to use rivets (and I don't have the equipment)?
Thanks to everyone who will take the time to reply, it will help me enormously. Of course, I'll post my creations here.

2024.05.11 23:49 concentrated-amazing DIY Solar

I posted yesterday about quotes. The pricetag has me really wondering if DIY could be realistic, and what savings would be.
Facts: * Will be ground-mount system of ~11kW on a wide-open area of our acreage. * No shading, will be inside a fence where only us and our immediate family (plus sheep) would ever go. 99.9% sure there are no buried lines there either, though we'll get a check to be sure. * Husband is a mechanic and handy (can fabricate & weld, for instance). * Husband's brother is electrician. * Husband's cousin is a lineman.
We'd have to deal with: * Permitting & inspections which is a bit of a pain but doable for my skillset. Also Canada Greener Homes Loan, but I am not sure if the solar companies help with that anyways. * Get pilings put in and fabricate the rack. * Ordering panels & inverters. * Install panels, inverters, & electrical connecting it all. * Short trench to the pole where our meter is & hook up. * Get bidirectional meter installed by electrical provider.
Am I missing something? Is this something that even remotely makes sense? Taking labour out of the equation, ballpark what this would cost in panels & materials...?
