2024.04.27 05:33 lolcowThrowaway Don't be like me (got job scammed)

Never thought I'd come back here after an incident that happened 2 years ago. Given that it's difficult to get a job nowadays, especially a job that compliments your degree (makes uni feel like a waste of time, money and energy), I'd thought it be worth sharing this so you won't get baited.
TLDR: got scammed, if an "employer" emails you "checks", tells you to print and deposit the "checks" using the bank's app, RUN.
I got sent an email last week about a "job invitation" for a Data Entry Job at "Paragon Offshore" and wanted a "briefing & interview" in MS Teams. Also the "pay" was apparently "$35.7".
The next day, they sent me a link to their website which started with "http" (not "https", so it wasn't even secure) the "interview" occurred which was just a couple basic questions via chat. No video call and no actual interview questions. An obvious red flag that I overlooked, I don't know why I let my guard down. Actually, there were a ton of red flags in these chats.
Here is the list of duties they sent:
---------------------------------
THIS IS STRICTLY AN ONLINE AND WORK FROM HOME JOB AND YOU WILL EARN $35.7 HOURLY AND $25 HOURLY FOR TRAINING
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES/FUNCTIONS/TASK: • Performs general clerical duties such as typing, answering phones, etc. • Check registers and logs contracts and checks received. • Contacts preparers of source documents to resolve questions, inconsistencies, or missing data. • Data entry on Profit Track. • Confirms accuracy of data such as contract numbers, check numbers, customer information, dealer information, rate information. • Compiles, sorts, and verifies accuracy of data to be entered. • Processes various forms. • Generates invoices and responds to inquiries regarding entered data as requested. • Read source documents such as cancelled checks, invoices, or transmittals and enter data in specific fields • Store completed invoices and contracts in appropriate locations.
---------------------
Here is the list of "equipments"
-----------------------------------------------------
The working equipment is the required material that is necessary for setting up your mini office. And these equipment include: * Apple Mac-Book laptop plus an IOS * HP Office jet Pro 8500A Premium All-in-One (Fax, Scanner, Copier and Printer) * The required Software (Peach Tree US Patent 1 accounting software), The MYOB Essential software 2016, Real-Time Accounting Integration CRM Software and Quick-books 2016,Accounting software Microsoft Office and Microsoft Operating Systems ( Service Packs 2 )* Mini-Office Stationary, and a time tracker software to enable you calculate the amount of time you have worked per day.
NOTE: The Company will make provision for funds to be used for the purchase of all working equipment and material for the setting up of your Mini Home Office.
This list is ridiculous, "Mac-book laptop plus an IOS"? What does that even mean? I love how it says "Microsoft Operating Systems (Service Pack 2)". Microsoft hasn't used the term "Service Pack" since Windows 7. I wish I blocked them immediately after seeing this but unfortunately, Im a lolcow.
They then said that I got "hired" and wanted me to sign an offer letter. Next, they asked for a name, address, phone number and email.
This doesn't make sense at all, an employer would already have a resume, consisting of this information. Unfortunately, Im a fkn dent.
Then, they gave a "check" which was fake. However, the bank deposited the "check" once it was printed and scanned using the app. My guard was completely dropped at this point (almost) because the "checks" were deposited.
Here is where the scam begins, They told me to e-transfer the money (close to the amount that was deposited) to some random. I fell for it of course.
The "check" depositing and e-transferring occured twice.
I guess I still had a small feeling that i was getting baited and wanted the feeling to stop. So, I decided to search up the employer and the people they told me to e-transfer to. I found nothing. I then decided to search up the "softwares" that they were "giving" to me. When I looked up "Peach Tree US Patent 1 accounting software" on google. The first link that popped up was from the better business bureau saying that this was a scam. At that point it was too late. I should have checked it out beforehand.
The bank already knows everything, I doubt that they can do anything about it. It has already been reported to the cops, along with rcmp/cafc fraud. I doubt that the police will do much aside from making me a statistic and make an example out of me just like I'm making an example out of myself by posting this garbage into a subreddit.
I definitely should've known better, I know. The cruel irony being that I've already taken cpsc 329 (intro to info sec) and took (later withdrew from) math 318. If this scam wasn't disguised as a job invitation, I doubt that I woulda fallen for it idk.
Knowing me, I'll probably just gonna rot in self-loathing for a while and move on from it despite my mind telling me to die a lot.
I hope you're doing ok and that your exams went well. <3

2024.04.19 03:36 SilverRex_234 [WTS][ON] Triple airsoft gun bundle $1000

Unfortunately personal circumstances have put me into a position in which I reluctantly need to liquidate my small airsoft collection. It's $1000 for all three. if you are in the Newmarket, Markham, Richmond hill, Barrie area I am willing to deliver for free, if not i am willing to ship.
EMT for shipped items or cash ONLY for meet ups, unless you're okay with paying in advance for the meetup.
Buyers must agree in writing (via chat or message) to the price and payment method before meeting up. If I do not receive an agreement, the trade will not happen.
Negotiations are to be done prior to a meet. Haggling when meeting up is very poor etiquette and will not be tolerated.
All sales are final.
For all the great traders out there, thank you!
gun #1 used Foliage Green KRYTAC LVOA+3 magazines. purchased from another used on this reddit.
gun#2 new in box Black and Tan Lancer tactical LT-10T AK-74. purchased from airsoft megastore, never used Except by the RCMP for velocity testing during importation. some minor cosmetic damage where the fire selector is. will come with two stick style batteries.

2024.04.08 19:04 DemCrackers RCMP "Criminal Record Check for Foreign Work" Correct?

I just got my criminal record check from the RCMP (Richmond, BC, if that matters) and they asked me if I was doing this for employment overseas, to which I said yes.
The certificate they gave me says "Canadian Police Certificate for Visa Applicants/Foreign Travel/Foreign Work Permits" which is different than if I were applying for work in Canada.
would this be the correct one? I'm sorry if this is an obvious answer, I'm just paranoid that even a small document slip-up could cost me the opportunity.
Thanks!

2024.04.08 17:11 ValuableToaster Hit and Run on No 3 Road

Im looking for any witnesses of an incident: Two days ago ( April 6) at about 5:45 pm, my partner was riding her bike in the cycling lanes on 3 Road, got cut off by a blue Toyota turning right into the parking lot, and ran into the car. This was going northbound, and at the entrance to the White Spot parking lot just before Akroyd Road.
The lady picked up a delivery order from the restaurant and then drove off, but not before yelling at us from across the lot that she is glad she hit my partner for being a "stupid bitch" and that she doesn't care that she could have almost killed someone.
The police investigation is a dead end since I am the only witness. The lady told them we were biking on the sidewalk, and the police have no proof either way without more witnesses. There were plenty of drivers around and a few pedestrians - I'm really hoping that if any of you happen to see this to take 20 minutes to make a statement to the police. Thanks!
Side note: can anyone clarify RCMP policy re. the City of Richmond's traffic cams? I noted to them that there was a camera at the intersection of No 3 and Akroyd that captures the spot, but they said they are not accessing it as part of the investigation and won't tell me why.

2024.03.31 23:39 finchman44 Recent Trip to Charlotte

This past week, me, my wife and three boys (7, 5 and 2) drove down to Charlotte from Philadelphia. My wife and I flew down to the Roval race with friends back in 2022 and we always talked about how cool it would be to bring the boys down and get the full experience since we really only bar-hopped when we were down there without them.
We spent all day Wednesday driving around and visiting different race shops. Got to RFK, Hendrick, SHR, Penske and JR Motorsports that day. Being a rainy day in the middle of the week, crowds were really light.
I'm a Blaney fan and ended up running into him in the Penske gift shop and he couldn't have been nicer. They have one of the Penske Porsche hypercars right in there so I asked him when Roger was going to let him drive one of them and he stopped to talk for 5-10 minutes about IMSA and about where they build them in the shop and how cool it was watching that whole program come together there. Just a genuinely nice dude; asked where we were from (his fiance is from not far from us so we talked about that) and thanked us for stopping by.
At JR Motorsports, we were the only people there and they had one of the cars in the tent right when you walk into the viewing area in the shop and they were doing the laser testing on it. The guy running it asked my 7-year-old if he knew how to use spray paint and he brought us into the tent and let him spray the car with whatever it is they use for the scanners to detect.
Our hotel was across the street from the HoF so we spent Thursday there and that was another great experience. Afterwards we stopped at Trackhouse to check their shop out.
Friday we did the Charlotte Motor Speedway tour and again, another awesome experience. They take you to the drag way, the dirt track and then into the speedway. We did a lap around the oval and then the guy doing the tour THREW that Ford econline van around the Roval. You get to get out in turn 3/4 and walk up the banking and my boys were amazed how steep it was.
On our way home Saturday, we stopped halfway at Richmond and caught most of the Xfinity race. It was my older twos first time at a short track (they've only been to Pocono twice).
Just an overall great trip if you're not too far and are a NASCAR fan. Absolutely recommend it.
