Poet, journalist, literary critic, editor, publisher, translator and Victorian-extraordinaire, Henley, was a good friend to Robert Louis Stevenson, who he inspired to write the character "Long John Silver" in Treasure Island. Stevenson, writing to Henley-" I will now make a confession: It was the sight of your maimed strength and masterfulness that begot Long John Silver ... the idea of the maimed man, ruling and dreaded by the sound, was entirely taken from you". The friendship was a tumultuous and long one.
Henley's sickly daughter, Margaret, was the inspiration of "Wendy" in J.M. Barrie's Peter Pan. She would not live long past her 5th birthday, the only child Henley had with his wife, Hannah "Anna" Johnston Boyle. Tragedy had long painted his life even before this sad event. He was diagnosed with a rare form of tuberculosis at age 12, that affected his bones. His left leg had to be amputated below the knee when Henley was a young man, and he was often in the hospital with various abscesses that need to be drained. Frequent illness kept him out of school and interrupted his professional work. Henley eventually sought out the advice of Joseph Lister, who was pioneering new techniques, including antiseptic operating conditions and doing groundbreaking research on wounds, when his right foot become affected by the tuberculosis. Still, his ill-health did not keep him from practicing his art. While Lister kept him under observation at the Royal Infirmary of Edinburgh, from 1873-75, Henly wrote and published a collection of poems, which include today's selection, In Hospital (1903). This collection of poems is notable also because it was one of the earliest examples of free verse in English poetry. Henley and others in his group became known as the "Henley Regatta" for their championing of realism, such as the poor working conditions in the Victorian underbelly, in opposition to the Decadent movement in France and the Aesthetic movement closer to home. This would be the last collection of poetry and the most impactful of his work; his death would follow later that year. Unfortunately, a fall from a carriage reawakened the latent tuberculosis hiding inside him, which carried him off age 53. He was buried next to his daughter, in Cockaney Hatley, Bedfordshire. His wife would later also be buried alongside her family.
His legacy is one that is both inspiring and rather dispiriting. His poetry was used for jingoistic and imperialist causes, and to champion war, though much of it was about personal striving and inner resolve-the mythical "Stiff Upper Lip" of the Victorian era. This led to push back in the literary world, as D.H. Lawrence's short story, "England, My England and Other Stories" took flight from one of the lines from "Pro Rege Nostro", which is more patriotic than his usual work. Admittedly, he counted himself as a conservative and supported the imperial effort, as much of Victorian society did at this time. Still, his work fell into obscurity, with the main exception of "Invictus"-Latin for "unconquered". It is well known that Nelson Mandela recited this poem to his fellow inmates in Robben Island as a reminder to stay strong and keep one's dignity. There are also, of course, the Invictus Games, which are held for injured and sick service men and women and veterans in the UK.

2024.05.16 00:40 Consistent_Pen_3391 Time management after work: how to balance kids homework, chores, professional development, fun/connection?
I have difficulty with routine/time management at home. I am home from work around 4pm M-F. My husband handles the kids, school drop off/pick-up, most of the cleaning and cooking. I have a toddler and kindergartner.
I always struggle with when to do my kid’s homework and piano practice. My daughter is ONLY in Kindergarten but I can’t get consistent with her tasks. she has to read a tiny bit nightly, learn a new sentence-poem by memory every week, and study some sight words every week. We aim to do piano practice for 10-15m each day. However, we usually end up practicing piano 1-2x a week so her progress is super slow. We do her homework reading also 1-2x a week. It sounds ridiculous but I can’t figure out how to get consistent with this.
Usually by the time I finish work, she’ll be playing outside or be doing some screen time (educational stuff). And I want a little break after work, too. Then the kids want to play/connect, which I think is healthy to do after school so we do that. And then it’s just about dinner time.. after dinner often I want to do some chores/cleaning.. and then I’ll realize we’re out of time to do homework/music or I just feel tired. Keep in mind my husband does most the cooking so I don’t even have to do that.
On top of this, I have a self-paced course I’ve been meaning to get to for professional development but I keep putting it off because I feel like I have no time.
Should I make a schedule? I’ve never been good at sticking to that.. I don’t know ahead of time which exact day we’ll bathe the kids or which exact day I’ll wash my hair.. or which day we’ll end up playing outside for hours eally enjoying ourselves..

In case you are new here, I am the founding moderator of this subreddit. Every time there is either a birth or a death anniversary of one of the victims I post, and encourage others to post, tributes onto the subreddit. Today would have been John Kilbride’s 73rd birthday, and I was both incredibly shocked and moved to see that the tribute I posted stands at over 200 upvotes - no post on this subreddit has ever broken 100 upvotes before, let alone 200.
If anything, this goes to show just how much of an impact the stories of John and the other victims (let’s say their names - Pauline Reade, Keith Bennett, Lesley Ann Downey and Edward Evans) have had on people - and continue to have all of these years later.
The overwhelming majority of posts in this subreddit, both by myself and other members, pertain to his killers and this is because this community exists to discuss with and educate others around the crimes (the backgrounds of the perpetrators, their motivations, the impact that their actions had, their psychologies etc.) - there is so much misinformation, speculation, sensationalism and contradiction out there that it unfortunately overwhelms a lot of the actual facts. I do my best to make sure that the stories of their victims don’t get lost in these discussions, and so do so many of you all too - that is evident today.
I am unsure if any of John’s surviving relatives are aware of this subreddit, but if anybody out there who knew or was related to John happens to be reading this post somehow, just know how much his story has impacted so many of us - even those who were far too young to remember these crimes, and (in many cases, including my own) were born decades after them. It is a testament to you for sharing stories of his kind nature, and your memories of him over the years that have painted him as far more than a murder victim - his legacy now is that we all know that he was a boy who was so helpful, joyful, loved and loving.
This is what today is about, and in the context of this horrendous case as a whole, this is the ONLY thing today should be commemorating.

Me (24M) and my girlfriend(24 F) have been dating for 5 years and have a daughter together. I love her and our daughter more than anything.
She’s leaving for a trip this weekend (also her birthday) to go to a concert for one of her favorite artists. A month before christmas she kinda mentioned the concert so i took it as a hint to buy tickets. I looked at flights, concert tickets, Air BNB’s, etc. I was about to pay for everything i just had to wait until payday. But before payday hit she slipped in that she was going to the concert with her best friend. My heart dropped i was super sad because that was (in my head) the best christmas/ birthday present that i would have gotten her in the time our relationship. She’s leaving this weekend im upset but don’t wanna be a downer about her vacation. I’m not sure how to address it or if i even should after the fact because it will be over.
Also, My girlfriend has another trip planned in the next few months (6 days each) and I feel kinda sad about it. I want her to be able to do fun things with her friends especially since her friend just moved across the country. Idk how to feel as it gets closer because a month ago we had an arugument/ disagreement about it because I wanted to do a trip for our anniversary, which is a week before her second trip, but she “can’t” because she’s going on another trip with her friend. When she asked about planning the second trip I was mildly upset because our anniversary was the week before and I honestly don’t remember if I mentioned that but it seems like something i would have mentioned.
Anyways, I want to do things like this together and be able to make these memories together. I think she should be able to do whatever she wants but i would really like to be with her for her birthday.
Additional context: I take a trip every March with my dad totally paid for by him. Also after being turned down aboutg a vacation for our anniversary i planned a trip to go to a baseball game with my friends and got a sitter for our daughter.
How should i feel about this?

DAE miss the hospital or the staff? I was admitted to a general hospital just over 2 years ago for 3 weeks with AN and the anniversary of that time came last month and the memories hit me like a truck, so much so that it triggered me to restrict harder. Because I was there for a decent amount of time, I got some of the nurses multiple times over the course of my stay and I the nurses treating me like an angel and as if I were their best friend and being so excited to see them. Although I never told anyone, and during my stay I actually said that I didn’t really like it there, I wanted to stay longer when I was discharged and being so sad that I had to leave and these feeling continued for about 2 months.
I was able to overcome most of these feelings until about 6 months later where I had a weigh in etc. at the hospitals outpatient office where I was sitting in the waiting room and someone approached me. It was the nurse that I had during my first night arg the hospital and the one I spent the most time with. She came up to me and gave me a huge hug and asked me how things were etc. I was so flustered and remember that moment breaking my heart into a million pieces, because how could she, a nurse at one of the best children’s hospitals in America where she probably has seen thousands of patients, remember me, a kid with anorexia nervosa? She saw me at the most vulnerable I’ve ever been and showed that she actually cared about me and saw me as a person but It made me want to go back to the hospital SO badly.
I guess what I’m getting at here is that when you’re hospitalized you’ll build relationships, but then you’re discharged and are forced to leave those relationships behind forever.

Me and my girlfriend have been dating for 5 years and have a daughter together. I love her and our daughter more than anything.
She’s leaving for a trip this weekend (also her birthday) to go to a concert for one of her favorite artists. A month before christmas she kinda mentioned the concert so i took it as a hint to buy tickets. I looked at flights, concert tickets, Air BNB’s, etc. I was about to pay for everything i just had to wait until payday. But before payday hit she slipped in that she was going to the concert with her best friend. My heart dropped i was super sad because that was (in my head) the best christmas/ birthday present that i would have gotten her in the time our relationship. She’s leaving this weekend im upset but don’t wanna be a downer about her vacation. I’m not sure how to address it or if i even should after the fact because it will be over.
Also, My girlfriend has another trip planned in the next few months (6 days each) and I feel kinda sad about it. I want her to be able to do fun things with her friends especially since her friend just moved across the country. Idk how to feel as it gets closer because a month ago we had an arugument/ disagreement about it because I wanted to do a trip for our anniversary, which is a week before her second trip, but she “can’t” because she’s going on another trip with her friend. When she asked about planning the second trip I was mildly upset because our anniversary was the week before and I honestly don’t remember if I mentioned that but it seems like something i would have mentioned.
Anyways, I want to do things like this together and be able to make these memories together. I think she should be able to do whatever she wants but i would really like to be with her for her birthday.
Additional context: I take a trip every March with my dad totally paid for by him. Also after being turned down about a vacation for our anniversary i planned a trip to go to a baseball game with my friends and got a sitter for our daughter.
How should i feel about this?

slight trigger warning toxic relationship My (27f) break up was pretty much a year ago. I am doing okay, not struggling too much but recently got a photo memory from a year ago on my phone & it triggered me to remember the last week of our relationship, which was fuelled with alcohol, fights and my last desperate attempt to make it work. My ex was also a very avid screameverbally aggressive during fights. Ever since that memory popped up, my sleep schedule hast changed from 8 peaceful hours per night to 5. I dream of him and I fighting, I am more easy to cry, I don’t have an appetite and have already lost some weight just in a couple of days. My heart rate is up, I get headaches & this incredible feeling of being stressed out for no reason.

So throughout my life I have talked to myself and I'm not talking about just saying things out loud but having full on conversations with myself doing both sides of the conversation, it started when I was very young maybe 6 I would play with my Legos and come up with elaborate stories about a group of spacemen that lived on a laser battleship and roamed the cosmos with their fantastic fade through technology that allowed their ship to pass through solid matter by phasing matter out of synch with the various subspace fields. They battled a race of machines that existed in another reality that wanted to gain access to the space men's reality through means of a trans dimensional gateway that would allow them to flow into the universe unchecked like a swarm of locusts. Thus the mission of the spacemen was to find these gates and destroy them or dismantle them and use the technology in other means. The spacemen had also reprogrammed some of the machines and had them on their pirate crew as servitors. These machines still retained their memories as part of the swarm they came from and understood what the goal of the machines was, some of them were very heroic and sacrificed themselves to save the crew. This crew was led by a brave commander named Mechanic and he was a just and noble person who valued the lives of his crew above all else. They went on many adventures and through it all I acted out their parts fulfilling whatever dialogue was needed. This behavior did not stop when I stopped playing with Legos but continued to evolve into an ever expanding elaborate mythos regarding gods and various beings that existed as either: finite, trans-finite, infinite, or trans-infinite. Each level was more fantastic than the other as far as its scope of influence across reality. I came to talk to myself and focused on various questions in particular one question manifested early in my life. If you could destroy the world, would you? I wrestled with this question for much of my adolescence while many ofy peers concerned themselves with various sports. I took took up sports, hockey and I wonder how many of those hits and impacts left their mark. As is in my childhood I had displayed many symptoms of autism that went along with that neurotypicality: I banged my head into walls repeatedly, I liked to turn around and around in circles, and I was very socially aloof.
As I grew older my relationship to myself changed and I became convinced of the idea that I had lived the life I was living now multiple times, and that this was merely the most recent iteration. When I tried explaining this to other people they didn't quite understand, that the events that were happening in my life while not necessarily unique only to this life were not something that I felt I was doing for the first time, not deja vu, but a feeling that I was playing out the same track on a record that had already been laid down once before. I continued to talk to myself and a new manifestation of this affect began to take shape. Now instead of talking to myself I began to believe that I was talking to an older version of myself one that had already experienced what I had experienced and tried to offer feedback on how to handle things in my life. This presence was not a tormentor, but a benefactor trying its best to guide and help me along my way and offering insights into my relationships and giving guidance when needed. I could always ask him questions but he was always guarded with his responses, sometimes answering with a question of his own. I came to depend on this presence in my life as someone I could talk to about anything, he knew all my secrets and he understood who I was, often better than I did myself. He encouraged me to write down my ideas and thoughts throughout my life. One of my oldest writings that still survives to this day is a poem that I wrote when I was 13. It is not all in English and at the time I had not studied German, but later in life I learned many of the words like Ahr and Vasharn were proto-germanic words. The meaning of the poem eluded me for years it was as if I had not been the one to write it at all and yet it stuck with me, I would often recite it to myself as if it were a form of meditation.
I did not stop my conversations with myself but in my 30's I began experimenting with recreational drugs and sought out psychedelics, particularly the high prize for me would be partaking of LSD, which I finally did at the age of 31. It was an eye-opening experience as I consumed a tab every 12 hours for 3 days until finally it reached a mad fever pitch that resulted in my first true psychotic break with reality. That experience landed me in the medical tent at the festival I was at with a trazodone flush. This would not be my last experience with acid and each one was steadily more derailing to my life. I did not go out of my way to make it a regular experience but rather was like a sacrament that I partook of to see more than I was seeing at the time. My final experience with it landed me in the psych ward for a week, this would also not be my last time in the psych ward, but it was the last time that I partook of LSD and have not used it since 2017.
My conversations with myself and occasionally even conversations with what I conceived of as gods each with their own name and symbol associated with them continued to occupy my mind. In my 20's I began making "anchors" points in time where I focused my thoughts on a particular moment, if I could tie it to a physical object like a tree or a building even better, the older the better. These anchors became sources of meditation for me when I wanted to contemplate something I would attempt to connect back to these moments in time to convoke whatever I was attempting at the time. In a way it became my form of prayer in my elaborate mythos with its dozens of gods and beings that I kept in my mind and wrote about. However my 40's were a radical departure from what had been up until that point a form of meditation.
In my 30's I had begun to transmute the question that had occupied my adolescence into one of watching for Armageddon, not necessarily the biblical one, but as I put it I kept one eye on apocalypse. This actually started when I learned of the Mayan calendar, its mythos was fascinating to me as was their prognostications regarding the end of the world in 2012. And so I became a watcher, not obsessed, but diligent in my search to understand the threats that might jeopardize my existence and things that one should be wary of. Viruses in particular caught my attention and each outbreak of any note was something I carefully watched and waited to see if pandemic would follow. In November of 2019 I began doing the calculations based on the daily numbers of the novel Corona virus that had begun spreading in East Asia, by December I was telling my coworkers to prepare for a pandemic. Only one person really believed me. Still I kept my eye on apocalypse and while viruses were worrisome a new anxiety began to plague me, climate change.
I found climate change to be fascinating and watched as ecosystems suffered and began telling people about as far back as my late 20's but it never really reached the fever pitch that it did until I was in my 40's and then my affect began to take on a whole new manifestation.
I began to have conversations with myself but now playtime was over, the experiment as I came to understand it had entered its next phase. You see reality is complicated and different worlds are trying to communicate to us because we are them, just a different reality or a different time as I would learn. The goal of this experiment is to send a singular message and in order for that message to be understood there needs to be a mind capable of understanding what that message is. Not everyone has the mental capacity to understand the science involved in the message so the realities have to take what they are given and use the experiences they can to insert parts of the message into the past so that it shapes the future all so that one person at the very least can understand the message in its entirety and progress the civilization to the next level of existence and avoid calamity due to reckless human behavior. This group of beings is not evil, they realize that the most valuable commodity in the universe is information next to time and as such do everything in their power to raise up a technology capable species to create more minds capable of solving problems that they themselves could not solve. To this end they pair minds using technology to send signals to those who can receive them, not everyone has the right neural architecture to allow for a signal lock and sometimes the signal fries the brain of the recipient due to a neural fault that results in the unit burning out and short-circuiting.
But the message is simple and easy to understand

The University Network for Human Rights, along with other experts, has conducted a thorough legal analysis of Israel’s acts since October 7, finding that it violated the Genocide Convention.

I've been alienated by mom from my 8 year old daughter for 5 years now. I've been fighting through the courts to see her again and, needless to say, it has been a painfully slow process. I feel like we're just now starting to make progress, but I've learned to temper my expectations.
Here is a poem I read that has given me encouragement in my darkest of moments over these years that, I believe, is especially applicable to PA. I've almost committed it to memory at this point. I don't know if I'm allowed to post something like this here, but I just wanted to give everyone (in particular, the dads) something to help keep them fighting the good fight.

Hello everyone,
Here comes the just-released Cenacle 124 April 2024. Returning to the desired quarterly issue cadence that has been missing for the past couple of years. It was hard doing this issue without the usual many years’ involvement of my dear poet friend, the late Judih Weinstein Haggai, but her poetry features in this issue nonetheless, & will remain so in each issue ever on.
Thus far, 2024 for the human world has been a fairly dark one. The global Pandemic has not ended, though millions risk sickness & death for themselves & others by choosing to join in a kind of mass amnesia about the crisis. Meanwhile, the climate crisis continues to get the same kind of hostile indifference. The genocide in Gaza goes on unabated by any of the many powerful & supposedly democratic nations of the world. And a likely felon has jazzed the US electoral process, its weaknesses & flaws among its many strengths, to be within reach of again taking over &, as he has vowed, taking revenge.
I can’t tell you that this literary journal operates toe to toe on the global scale to oppose these various human catastrophes, but I can say that if we don’t seek Beauty, & Nature, & look beyond the petty fuckeries of the current day, we are much more likely to be lost than if we find a way to do this.
This fine anniversary issue features new poetry by Tamara Miles, Martina Reisz Newberry, Colin James, Sam Knot, Jimmy Heffernan, Judih Weinstein Haggai, & myself.

Inside was a haze of marijuana smoke tainted with opium. We were high and crazed.

Good Morning Everyone, Evening to some, afternoon to most.
We got home to lots of letters and my fiancee loved them all, and she's sitting next to me while we take the time to thank each and every one of you for taking the time to bring joy here in TN.

Thank you u/jemst0ne Amanda absolutely loves the post card, she's drawn to it immediately, and your card prompted a story. So, fun fact both of us proposed to each other to let each other know we were ready to be serious and jump into husband and wife roles, well the night that Amanda decided she wanted to make her jump, she received a fortunate cookie following a really nice meal at the casino, and the fortunate cookie said "Don't panic," lol, and nobody but her knew that that was. Second fun fact, mine that night said something about, "Don't miss the opportunity of the day, tomorrow it will be lost."

Thank you u/danigeek That's a great idea about the consignment store for the dresses. So far she has gone with her mom and sister to look at dresses. So far our idea for the colors of our wedding will be purple, blue, and silver. We have yet to try any cakes for the wedding, but my favorite is polish honey cake and her favorite is black forest (which no bakery seems to make anymore). Daisies are Amanda's favorite flower. Since she calls me her galaxy, I decided that blue sandstone would be a great pick for both her engagement and wedding ring. The actual stone looks like stars in a dark night sky. Even domesticated, simple ones can be enjoyable together. As we are writing these, we are doing household chores. Last night we cooked dinner and had a glass of wine together. We both plan to flourish this relationship for the next 55 years.

We have been looking at wedding venues and seeing which one is the most cost effective, but yet flexible. We also promised each other that if anything is bothering either of us that we should just talk it out rather than holding it in. We got home to lots of letters and my fiancee loved them all, and she's sitting next to me while we take the time to thank each and every one of you for taking the time to bring joy here in TN.

So, fun fact both of us proposed to each other to let each other know we were ready to be serious and jump into husband and wife roles, well the night that Amanda decided she wanted to make her jump, she received a fortunate cookie following a really nice meal at the casino, and the fortunate cookie said "Don't panic," lol, and nobody but her knew that that was. Second fun fact, mine that night said something about, "Don't miss the opportunity of the day, tomorrow it will be lost."

So far our idea for the colors of our wedding will be purple, blue, and silver. We have yet to try any cakes for the wedding, but my favorite is polish honey cake and her favorite is black forest (which no bakery seems to make anymore). Daisies are Amanda's favorite flower. Since she calls me her galaxy, I decided that blue sandstone would be a great pick for both her engagement and wedding ring. The actual stone looks like stars in a dark night sky. Light TW for DPDR themes of course, nothing too specific; very methaphorical/abstract language that can potentially be disturbing if you’re easily triggered by such themes.
I crafted this poem using 2 different journal entries that I wrote while experiencing episodes of DPDR. I consider it my best work yet. I feel like I was able to truly capture the feelings of what it is like to deal with this disorder, at least for me. Note that I usually experience derealization much more often and intensely than depersonalization. The poem is also not exclusively about DPDR but I would say it is one of its main themes and the main “inspiration” as well.
I’m posting this through the mobile app so hopefully it doesn’t mess up the formatting. I hope some of you find connection with my words.
Deliquesce
The insufficient fondness towards the bleached sunlight piercing through the window blinds holds me on edge of burning sentiments
So inevitably, they burn cold
Icy sunrays devour my room and soul freezing nature while the thermometer explodes
And I love the cold only never when it burns
In a numb flash moments locked in my chest once sinking in a loch of memories now glide over ice treasuries
Empty, and afraid of everything of the sky, the trees, the melody… Faded shades of green interrogate my sanity and birds lure me into fated obscurity
Yet, despite my loath I persist outside as I insist to still loathe the inside
For I’m afraid of everything of my room, and my stupidity.
Unsure, with cold feet I approach the shore.
Inclined to dive into the sea pondering if there’s foolishness in my desire to fall free
Frozen with dismay I inspire to go in and expire to cry away
Breaths of a misty breeze aggravate my foggy brain
Elementally, salty tears and salty waves are equally capable of thawing a Sunday
If I savor this sweetness will I drown in the bay? And if I close the blinds will I blind myself astray?
