CPWA Octane 5-8-24

We open with a recap of last week's main event featuring The Olympians' Devon Gatlin-Tyson and "The Number One Pick" LeJuan Jones. "The Number One Pick" had control for much of the match and kept DGT in check, until DGT made his comeback. Thanks to interference from Masato Kojima and Jordan Angle, DGT manages to defeat "The Number One Pick" with a split-second DDT.
The package ends and we open with a 30-second intro highlighting all of the stars of CPWA as The Roots' "BOOM" plays in the background. The intro ends with "The Number One Pick" LeJuan Jones holding the CPWA Heavyweight Championship belt over his head. Pyro goes off in the arena for a few seconds, followed by cheering from the crowd.
Brian Kinsley: We welcome you to CPWA Octane! We are coming to you live from Columbus, Ohio! Brian Kinsley along with Anthony Harris and Sir Samuel Stewart, and we have a packed show for you tonight! It's the go-home show for Fatal Alliance and we got a lot in store.
Anthony Harris: We have Jason Reynolds in action, plus a six-woman tag team match and Pretty Boy will be in action.
Sir Samuel Stewart: Let's take it to the ring!
Buckshot, Skyzoo, Promise, and Sean Price's "I'm Better Than You" plays in the arena as "The Number One Pick" LeJuan Jones, along with Brother Julius make their entrance to address the crowd. Lejuan and Brother Julius enter the ring and address the crowd.
LeJuan Jones: I was expecting a hero's welcome in my hometown, but instead I'm welcomed to mocking laughter. Devon Gatlin-Tyson had help from Jordan Angle and Masato Kojima. He needed his fellow Olympian and the guy that I will face in the main event at Fatal Alliance for the CPWA World Heavyweight Championship. Matter of fact, I want both of you out here now!
There is complete silence.
LeJuan Jones: What? None of you don't want to show up? How about I go back there and find you myself!
Before LeJuan could exit the ring, Masato Kojima rushes through the crowd and enters the ring, attacking Brother Julius. LeJuan sees this and goes to attack Kojima. "The Number One Pick" and Kojima brawl inside the ring as referees and road agents rush in to break up the fight. Kojima slides out of the ring, grabs a kendo stick and whacks Brother Julius with it. LeJuan rushes back in the ring, only for Kojima to attack him with a kendo stick. Kojima leaves.
Brian Kinsley: What a way to kickoff Octane. Kojima once again, sending a message to "The Number One Pick." He means business.
We cut to the backstage area as we see Devon Gatlin-Tyson being interviewed by Kevin Meyers. DGT expresses how much it meant to defeat "The Number One Pick" in last week's main event. DGT also expresses that he should be next in line to challenge for the CPWA World Heavyweight Championship, should LeJuan retain the championship.
We cut back to the ring.
Announcer: The following contest is scheduled for...
Crowd: ONE FALL!!!
Less Than Jake's "P.S. Shock The World" plays in the background.
Announcer: Introducing first, from New Orleans, Louisiana, he is the CPWA Cruiserweight Champion, Jason Reynolds.
Men at Work's "Down Under" plays in the arena.
Announcer: And his opponent, representing The Commonwealth, from Brisbane, Australia, he is one-half of the Quebec Outback Connection, Wade Parker.
Match 1: Jason Reynolds vs. Wade Parker
Give Remy LaCroix and especially Owen Benoit-Jericho the assist for interfering on behalf of Wade Parker. It wasn't like Parker needed help, but seeing how much of a problem Reynolds was to OBJ in the past, the members of The Commonwealth did what was needed to give Parker the win after he pulled off a tornado DDT.
4 out of 5 stars.
After the match, Parker, LaCroix, and OBJ continue their assault on Reynolds. Suddenly, Sharnaz Khan, Cedric Jordan, and CPWA Cruiserweight Champion Deron "Ron" Jordan rushed to the ring to even the odds for Reynolds, causing Parker, LaCroix, and OBJ to flee the ring.
We cut to a recap of Big Angela's debut match a few weeks ago on Octane. The recap ends and we cut back to the ring.
Announcer: The following contest is scheduled for one fall with a 25-minute time limit.
NUMP feat. Jessica Chanel's "I'm So Filipino" plays in the arena.
Announcer: Introducing first, from Manila, Philippines, she is Kathy Reyes.
Megan Thee Stallion's "Captain Hook" plays in the arena.
Announcer: And her opponent, representing Number One Enterprises, accompanied to the ring by Kiara Thompson, from Newark, New Jersey, she is Big Angela
Match 2: Kathy Reyes vs. Big Angela
A somewhat decent match, if it didn't have Kiara Thompson constantly interfering and distracting the referee. As much as Kathy Reyes kept fighting, it wasn't enough to take down Big Angela, who delivered a military press slam and a body splash off the top rope to get the win.
3 out of 5 stars.
We cut to a graphic hyping up a six-woman tag team match between "Otaku Girl86" Michelle Lennox, Michelle Bluefeather, and Ferial Kapoor taking on Priscilla Pierce, Cynthia Steele, and "The Dominican She-Devil" Ivy Fernandez. We then cut to a graphic hyping up a match between Marco Rocha and Pretty Boy. We then see a graphic hyping up a match between Jake Odenkirk and Zechariah Odenkirk.
***Commercial Break***
We come back from commercial break and we see members of Number One Enterprises checking on a prone Brother Julius. LeJuan tells the rest of Number One Enterprises to put aside their petty infighting and focus on going after Masato Kojima and if possible, Jordan Angle. General Wade, Guerrilla God, Ivan Markov, and Klaus Muller agree and set off to find Kojima.
We cut back to the ring.
Announcer: The following contest is scheduled for one fall with a 25-minute time limit.
Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out" plays in the arena.
Announcer: Introducing first, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, he is Jake Odenkirk
Blake Shelton's "Good Ole Boys" plays in the arena.
Announcer: And his opponent, from the great state of Tennessee, Zechariah Newton.
Match 3: Jake Odenkirk vs. Zechariah Newton
This hoss fight felt more like a bar-room brawl, considering how the two big men were throwing more fists and forearms than they were exchanging wrist locks and suplexes. It also didn't help that Roy Newton interfered in the match for Zechariah and wasn't thrown out, but yet when William interfered to even the odds, he would be thrown out by the referee. This led to Zechariah using brass knuckles, thanks to Roy, to get the win.
2 out of 5 stars.
We cut to a recap highlighting the feud between the team of Michelle Bluefeather and Ferial Kapoor against Cynthia Steele and "The Dominican She-Devil" Ivy Fernandez, which lasts for a minute. The recap ends and we cut back to the ring.
Announcer: The following contest is a six-woman tag team match scheduled for one fall with a 25-minute time limit.
Beastie Boys' "Intergalactic" plays in the arena.
Announcer: Introducing first, from Chicago, Illinois, she is "Otaku Girl 86" Michelle Lennox.
Mattmac feat. Dakota Bear and Okema's Rez play in the arena.
Announcer: Her tag team partners, introducing first, from Phoenix, Arizona, she is Michelle Bluefeather.
Panjabi MC's "Jogi" plays in the arena.
Announcer: Finally, from Bollywood, she is Ferial Kapoor.
Johann Sebastian Bach's Air on G String plays in the arena.
Announcer: Introducing first, from the posh hills of the Hamptons, she is Priscilla Pierce.
Bananarama's "Venus" plays in the arena.
Announcer: Her tag team partners, introducing first, from Los Angeles, California, she is one-half of the CPWA Women's Tag Team Champions, Cynthia Steele
DaniLeigh Ft. Fivio Foreign "Dominican Mami" plays in the arena.
Announcer: Finally, from Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic, she is one-half of the CPWA Women's Tag Team Champions, "The Dominican She-Devil" Ivy Fernandez.
Match 4: "Otaku Girl 86" Michelle Lennox, Michelle Bluefeather, and Ferial Kapoor vs. Priscilla Pierce, Cynthia Steele, and "The Dominican She-Devil" Ivy Fernandez
A very decent trios match but the finish was very screwy as Lennox had Priscilla Pierce pinned, but the referee was unconscious. Another referee would slide in after Cynthia Steele whacked Lennox with a steel chair. This allowed Steele to hit Twisted Steel on Lennox to get the win.
3 out of 5 stars.
We cut to the backstage area and we see Pretty Boy beating up Marco Rocha. Referees and road agents rush in to stop the fight, but Pretty Boy knocks them all down and continues beating up Rocha as Octane goes into a commercial break.
***Commercial break***
We come back from commercial break and we see Pretty Boy and Marco Rocha fighting their way to the ring. Once inside, the fight continues, but Pretty Boy looks underneath the ring and takes out several chairs, kendo sticks, sledgehammers, trash cans, and stop signs, throwing them in the ring.
Match 5: Marco Rocha vs. Pretty Boy
Pretty Boy dominated for much of this match, showing absolutely no mercy. It looked like Pretty Boy was going to mercilessly end the match but "Florida Man" Gary Strange made his surprise return as he delivered a chair shot to Pretty Boy, followed by hitting him with a WTF (Welcome to Florida) and covering Rocha over the prone Pretty Boy for him to get the win.
FIVE STARS!!!!!
We cut to a graphic hyping up the main event between The Commonwealth's Owen Benoit-Jericho and Kelly Lawton taking on The Olympians' Ryan Phelps and Devon Gatlin-Tyson.
***Commercial Break***
Brian Kinsley: This Saturday, CPWA will be in Detroit for Fatal Alliance and next Wednesday, we'll be in Indianapolis for Octane.
We cut back to the ring.
Announcer: Our main event is scheduled for...
Crowd: ONE FALL!!!
Blood Brothers' "Replica" plays in the arena
Announcer: Introducing first, representing The Commonwealth, they are Owen Benoit-Jericho and Kelly Lawton.
Leo Arnaud's "Bulger's Dream" plays in the arena
Announcer: And their opponents, representing The Olympians, they are Ryan Phelps and Devon Gatlin-Tyson.
Main Event: The Commonwealth (Owen Benoit-Jericho and Kelly Lawton) vs. The Olympians (Ryan Phelps and Devon Gatlin-Tyson)
The main event was a back-and-forth match but the shenanigans would come about as the Soldiers of Misfortune (General Wade and Guerrilla God) attack Jordan Angle backstage, causing a distraction. Ivan Markov and Klaus Muller attacked Ryan Phelps, leaving DGT to be assaulted by OBJ and Lawton. Lawton won the match with an Outback Cutter.
3 out of 5 stars.
After the match, we cut to the parking lot area and we see "The Number One Pick" LeJuan Jones beating up Masato Kojima. Kojima is busted open and "The Number One Pick" continues his assault. LeJuan hits a Game Winner, leaving Kojima laying in a pool of his own blood.
Brian Kinsley: There is so much craziness going on! This weekend, it's Fatal Alliance! Who will be the new CPWA Tag Team Champions? Who will escape Hardcore Hell with the CPWA World Heavyweight Championship? For Anthony Harris and Sir Samuel Stewart, this is Brian Kinsley saying goodnight!

We open with a recap of last week's show as "The Number One Pick" LeJuan Jones and Masato Kojima have a contract signing for their match for the CPWA World Heavyweight Championship. We cut to a video package illustrating what a Harcore Hell match looks like. Hardcore Hell is a Hell in A Cell type match with hardcore weapons and blowtorches scattered around ringside and attached the cell itself as we see highlights of the matches that took place primarily in Japan, some featuring Masato Kojima himself. After both signed the contract, "The Number One Pick" wastes no time flipping over the table and attacks Masato Kojima. The two brawl, leading to referees and road agents to break up the fight. As LeJuan and Brother Julius exit the ring, Masato Kojima flies through the ropes with a plancha dive onto LeJuan to continue the brawl.
We are coming to you live from Cincinnati, Ohio! Brian Kinsley along with Anthony Harris and Sir Samuel Stewart, and we have a great show for you tonight! We have cruiserweight action, plus "The Orange Idol Princess" Aiko Yoshida will take on Priscilla Pierce.
Anthony Harris: That's not all, we have King Shaka defending the CPWA Television Championship against Miguel Sandoval Jr. and "The Number One Pick" LeJuan Jones will take on Devon Gatlin-Tyson.
Sir Samuel Stewart: Let's take it to the ring!
We cut to the ring.
Announcer: The following contest is scheduled for...
Crowd: ONE FALL!!!
Zola's "Zingu 7" plays in the arena.
Announcer: Introducing first, from Cape Town, South Africa, he is Kwazi Nkosi.
Bambu's "Chairman Mao" plays in the arena.
Announcer: And his opponent, from Shanghai, China, he is Keith Yang.
Brian Kinsley: IT'S YANG TIME!!!
Match 1: Kwazi Nkosi vs. Keith Yang
What should've been noted as a big win for Kwazi Nkosi over a two-time CPWA World Heavyweight Champion in Keith Yang, was nothing more than a stop and start borefest. Both competitors did their best to keep the crowd involved, but the botches took them out of it. Kwazi won the match with a Phoenix Splash to get the win.
1 out of 5 stars.
We cut to The Olympians' locker room area and we see Devon Gatlin-Tyson getting ready for his match tonight. Jordan Angle approaches DGT and tells him that he'll be in his corner tonight and make sure no one from Number One Enterprises try to affect the outcome of the match. DGT thanks Jordan and tells him that he will be fine.
We cut back to the ring.
Announcer: The following contest is scheduled for one fall with a twenty-five minute time limit.
Johann Sebastian Bach's Air on G String plays in the arena.
Announcer: Introducing first, from the posh hills of the Hamptons, she is Priscilla Pierce.
Kyary Pamyu Pamyu's "PONPONPON" plays in the arena as the crowd claps along to the beat
Announcer: And her opponent, from Yokohama, Japan, she is "The Orange Idol Princess" Aiko Yoshida.
Match 2: Priscilla Pierce vs. "The Orange Idol Princess" Aiko Yoshida
A slightly better match than the opener and with a lot of storytelling. Priscilla was in control of the match from the early going, but "The Orange Idol Princess" went on a comeback and looked to have the match won, but interference from "The Dominican She-Devil" Ivy Fernandez prevented such a thing from happening. This allowed Priscilla to throw her pink dust in the eyes of Yoshida, setting her up for Beauty and Grace to get the win.
3 out of 5 stars.
We cut to a graphic hyping up a match between Cynthia Steele and Michelle Bluefeather. We then cut to a graphic hyping up a match between Ryan Phelps and Owen Benoit-Jericho. We then cut to a graphic hyping up a match between Iron Willed (Ivan Markov and Klaus Muller) taking on The Odenkirks (William and Jake).
***Commercial Break***
We come back from commercial break and we see "The Number One Pick" LeJuan Jones getting ready for his match. Brother Julius tells LeJuan that he made sure the referee calls the match in his favor. LeJuan thanks Brother Julius and tells him to go find The Soldiers of Misfortune to take out Masato Kojima. Brother Julius asks if his assistance will be needed for the main event tonight, to which "The Number One Pick" answers no and that he will beat Devon Gatlin-Tyson easily.
We cut back to the ring.
Announcer: The following contest is a tag team match scheduled for one fall with a twenty-five minute time limit.
Metallica's "Orion" plays in the arena.
Announcer: Introducing first, representing Number One Enterprises, the team of Ivan Markov and Klaus Muller, Iron-Willed!
Franz Ferdinand's "Take Me Out" plays in the arena.
Announcer: And their opponents, from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, they are William and Jake, The Odenkirks.
Match 3: Iron Willed (Ivan Markov and Klaus Muller) vs. The Odenkirks (William and Jake)
When it comes to these two teams, expect the physicality to go past the all-time high bar. The match started out promising but faded in certain moments where the crowd was supposed to be cheering intensely. While the match was back and forth, it wasn't something to write home about. The match ended with William hitting the stalling brainbuster on Muller to get the win.
3 out of 5 stars.
We cut to a video package highlighting Cynthia Steele, which lasts for a minute. The video package ends and we cut back to the ring.
Announcer: The following contest is scheduled for one fall with a twenty-five minute time limit.
Bananarama's "Venus" plays in the arena.
Announcer: Introducing first, from Los Angeles, California, she is Cynthia Steele
.Mattmac feat. Dakota Bear and Okema's Rez play in the arena.
Announcer: And her opponents, from Phoenix, Arizona, she is Michelle Bluefeather.
Match 4: Cynthia Steele vs. Michelle Bluefeather
A very entertaining match that got the Cincinnati crowd invested. Michelle Bluefeather had control of the match, but consistent interference from Priscilla Pierce and later "The Dominican She-Devil" Ivy Fernandez helped Cynthia come away with a win with Twisted Steel.
4 out of 5 stars.
After the match, all three women attack Michelle Bluefeather. Suddenly, Ferial Kapoor, "Otaku Girl 86" Michelle Lennox, and Shiori Yoshimura rushed to the ring to even the odds, focing Cynthia, Ivy, and Priscilla to flee the ring.
We cut to a graphic hyping up a match for King Shaka defending the CPWA Television Championship against Miguel Sandoval Jr. We then cut to a graphic hyping up the main event between Devon Gatlin-Tyson and "The Number One Pick" LeJuan Jones. We then cut to a graphic hyping up a match between Ryan Phelps and Owen Benoit-Jericho.
***Commercial Break***
We come back from commercial break and we see The Vega Brothers (Raul, Raymundo, Ramon, and Angel), along with Marco Rocha, Leopard Shiraishi, and Tigress Ayala talking among each other. Suddenly, Pretty Boy attacks Raul, leading to a five on one brawl that involves Rocha. Referees and road agents rush in to break up the fight. Pretty Boy proceeds to attacks the referees and road agents, and gives chase to the Vega Brothers, Rocha, Shiriashi, and Ayala.
We cut back to the ring.
Announcer: The following contest is scheduled for one fall with a twenty-five minute time limit.
Leo Arnaud's "Bulger's Dream" plays in the arena
Announcer: Introducing first, representing the Olympians, from Baltimore, Maryland, he is Ryan Phelps.
Blood Brothers' "Replica" plays in the arena
Announcer: And his opponent, representing The Commonwealth, from Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada, he is Owen Benoit-Jericho.
Match 5: Ryan Phelps vs. Owen Benoit-Jericho
As highly anticipated as this match was, neither guy felt like working with each other. Phelps and OBJ started brawling with each other, spilling out of the ring several times. The match ended with Ryan Phelps uncharacteristically hitting OBJ over the head with a steel chair for a DQ finish.
1 out of 5 stars.
We cut to a video package highlighting King Shaka, which lasts for a minute. The video package ends and we cut back to the ring.
Announcer: The following contest is scheduled for one fall and it is for the CPWA Television Championship.
Leo Arnaud's "Bulger's Dream" plays in the arena
Announcer: Introducing first, representing The Olympians, from Miami, Florida, he is Miguel Sandoval Jr.
Aloe Blacc's "A King is Born" plays in the arena
Announcer: And his opponent, from Johannesburg, South Africa, he is the CPWA Television Champion, King Shaka
Match 6: CPWA Television Championship: Miguel Sandoval Jr. vs. King Shaka (c)
Another match that was highly advertised, but fell flat in execution. It also didn't help that Lord Phillip Byron IV would interfere in the match, striking King Shaka with his cane, and later Miguel Sandoval Jr.
1 out of 5 stars.
Afterward, a brawl spilled out between the three men.
We cut to a graphic hyping up the main event between Devon Gatlin-Tyson and "The Number One Pick" LeJuan Jones.
***Commercial Break***
Brian Kinsley: Next week, CPWA will be in Columbus, Ohio for Octane. We will see Jason Reynolds in action, plus a six-woman tag team match between Priscilla Pierce, Cynthia Steele, and "The Dominican She-Devil" Ivy Fernandez taking on Michelle Bluefeather, Ferial Kapoor, and "Otaku Girl 86" Michelle Lennox, Pretty Boy will also be in action, and much more.
Announcer: Our main event is scheduled for...
Crowd: ONE FALL!!!
Leo Arnaud's "Bulger's Dream" plays in the arena
Announcer: Introducing first, representing The Olympians, from Jacksonville, Florida, he is Devon Gatlin-Tyson
Buckshot, Skyzoo, Promise, and Sean Price's "I'm Better Than You" plays in the arena
Announcer: And his opponent, from Columbus, Ohio, he is the CPWA World Heavyweight Champion "The Number One Pick," LeJuan Jones.
Main Event: Devon Gatlin-Tyson vs. "The Number One Pick" LeJuan Jones
The main event was not only the match of the night but was also highly anticipated. "The Number One Pick" had control for much of the match and kept DGT in check. It looked like LeJuan had the match won and was going for the Game Winner, but LeJuan kept taunting DGT. This would come back to haunt "The Number One Pick" as DGT would mount a comeback. To make matters worse for LeJuan, Masato Kojima was beating up Brother Julius and The Soldiers of Misfortune (General Wade and Guerrilla God). This led to DGT hitting the split-second DDT to get a very big win.
FIVE STARS!!!!!
DGT exited the ring and celebrated with Jordan Angle and the rest of the Olympians.
Brian Kinsley: I can't believe it! Devon Gatlin-Tyson just beaten the CPWA World Heavyweight Champion in a non-title match. "The Number One Pick's" chances of being a double champion in two different promotions is in serious jeopardy. For Anthony Harris and Sir Samuel Stewart, this is Brian Kinsley saying goodbye everybody!
Octane fades to black.

🆕 NCBD April 17, 2024…
Just a few books I grabbed today…
Animal Pound 3A. Tom King & Peter Gross describe pound life during various animals elected terms, the Kitten Cam ushering in good times of peace, prosperity, and full bellies, and the challenging ones including The Bunny Wars, the Great Dog Howl, & Raven’s death. But the last page is a surprise to all!
Avengers: Twilight 5A. Sure, I’ll take an Alex Ross cover over Chip Zdarsky & Daniel Acuña’s penultimate issue revealing The Skull’s plans, and out heroes bid to stop them. With an entire country against them, the president dead, and James taking out Tony, is this all just too much to overcome? Could the smashing get any worse?
Blue Book: 1947 3A. James Tynion IV & Michael Avon Oeming provide us additional tales to either prove or refute the existence of extraterrestrial beings. Even “debunked” stories won’t quell suspicions where mysterious plane crashes and dead investigators are involved. What do you think?
Fall of the House of X 4B. An E.M. Gist White Queen cover with Gerry Duggan & Jethro Morales flipping the script, where Apocalypse is trying to save Krakoa while Charles is striking deals with Nimrod. Is this the end of mutantkind? Not if Storm can help it.
Helen of Wyndhorn 2B. More Tom King with beautiful Bilquis Evely art and a Foil Variant. Following the beast attack, Helen struggles with life at Wyndhorn, and almost seems homesick. Why did her grandfather, Barnabas, summon her? As she seems to slip back to her old self, new adventures await.
John Constantine: Hellblazer - Dead In America 4A. Simon Spurrier & Aaron Campell has John in Masaville, a small, dust bowl town, shrouded in magic to hide a horrible secret. Can the team convince Swamp Thing to help them find Dream’s missing sand before it falls into the wrong hands?
Moon Man 2B. An Erica D'Urso Variant for this Kyle Higgins & Marco Locati book. Ramon has new powers, but he’s powerless against Janus’ transparent public relations campaign seeking to save face following the “cosmic turbulence” embarrassment. Back in Cleveland, can he convince Micah that he’s not a sell-out amidst all the anti-Janus sentiment?
Superman (vol 6) 13H. A Joshua Williamson story with Rafa Sandoval art & striking foil cover for House of Brainiac part 2. Superman & Lobo team up for a rescue mission like no other. 2024.04.12 17:03 vvv4231 The Definitive Guide to the 2024 Brasileirão [Part 1/3]

A Guide to the 2024 Brasileirão Season

As the 2024 season of the world’s most competitive league begins this Saturday (13/04), many /soccer users might be interested in following the football from the world’s best cradle of talent, but be unknowledgeable about the league’s workings and its sides, and this guide shall attempt to quell your doubts about the Brasileirão!

How does the league work?

The league is contested from April to December in a no-frills double round-robin format, with its 20 contestants playing each other for a total of 38 matches, just like in many European leagues. Unlike them, however, the first tiebreaker is not goal difference or head-to-head record, but rather number of wins. The four worst-placed teams at the end of the season are relegated to the Brasileirão Série B.
The four best-placed teams are awarded a group stage berth to the Libertadores, CONMEBOL’s premier club competition, equivalent to the UEFA Champions League; the following two best ones, a Libertadores qualifying stage berth; and the following six best ones, a group stage berth to the Sudamericana, CONMEBOL’s second-tier club competition, equivalent to the UEFA Europa League. Furthermore, the Libertadores, Sudamericana and Copa do Brasil winners are all awarded Libertadores group stage berths and, should they happen to finish among continental spots in the Brasileirão (for instance, the Libertadores winner being a Brasileirão side finishing in the top four), their league-earned berth is passed on to the next-best team. Therefore, in total the Brasileirão will award no less than twelve continental berths, and as low as the 15th-placed team could earn one of them!

What happened between January and April?

Each of Brazil’s 26 states (and the Federal District) has its own football federation that runs, between January and April, its own state-level pyramid, in which every team in Brazil takes part in. For instance, Flamengo are affiliated to the Rio de Janeiro State Football Federation and thus participates in their premier competition, the Campeonato Carioca. Teams qualify to the Brasileirão Série D, Brazil’s lowest national league, and to the Copa do Brasil through state leagues; for instance, for having the best campaigns in the 2024 Campeonato Carioca amongst teams not yet in CBF’s national-level pyramid, Nova Iguaçu and Boavista qualified to the 2025 Brasileirão Série D.

How can I follow it?

The Brasileirão is available internationally through Fanatiz, and in the United States also through Paramount+. Additionally, it can be available in your country through a local television broadcaster—a good resource for checking them out is LiveSoccerTV.
On Reddit, /futebol is the home of Brazilian football and will welcome you and your newfound passion for it! Furthermore, several Brasileirão sides also have subreddits of their own!

100 Years of Solitude

vvv4231
The year of a club’s centenary can often be the source of distress in Brazilian football, as in recent years Cruzeiro, Grêmio, Palmeiras and even Athletico rivals Coritiba, usual Brasileirão mainstays, spent their centennials either fighting against relegation, suffering that fate or fighting for promotion back to top-flight. Athletico will attempt to fight that curse in 2024 and rebound from an underwhelming 2023 season in which they didn’t enjoy memorable Copa do Brasil and Libertadores campaigns and finished only eighth in the Brasileirão, failing to secure a third consecutive Libertadores qualification.
That the 2023 season is seen as a failure, however, speaks volumes about how the club has raised its level in the past few decades, going from an inconsistent top-flight feature to a club that has missed only one of the past 28 Brasileirão seasons, and especially in the recent past, in which they lifted the 2019 Copa do Brasil and the 2018 and 2021 Sudamericana trophies. Shunned by the traditional Brazilian twelve major clubs, Athletico Paranaense have established themselves as a major force in Brazilian football and will see anything but a Libertadores berth as a failure, having participated in five of its past seven editions, finishing as runners-up in 2022.
Athletico Paranaense play in a fast-paced, direct way, relying on long-range passes and Fernandinho’s skill set to quickly advance the ball to the wings, then swarming the box to take advantage of crosses. Still lamenting the departure of Vitor Roque to Barcelona, supporters will rely on Gonzalo Mastriani, one of the stars of the recently-relegated side América, to bring home the goals. The highly-rated and sought-after Christian, a centre midfielder turned right-winger, was retained for this season and will remain one of the side’s key players.
Starting XI (4-2-3-1) Bento; Leo Godoy, Kaique Rocha, Thiago Heleno, Esquivel; Fernandinho, Erick, Bruno Zapelli; Christian, Gonzalo Mastriani, Agustín Canobbio.
Fun fact Faced with a lack of goalkeepers ahead of the 1925 Campeonato Paranaense final, Athletico sought former player Tapyr, who’d given up on his playing career at the beginning of the tournament to become a cowboy in the countryside. The player almost drowned on his way to the match after having to cross a river, but went on to have a great performance and secure Athletico their first-ever trophy.
Familiar face Fernandinho, an Athletico academy product, returned to the club in 2022 after his success at Shakhtar Donetsk and Manchester City and has been one of the club’s cornerstones since then.
Star of the show Bento. Following in the footsteps of previous Athletico goalkeeper greats Weverton and Santos, the 198-centimeter tall player earned a call-up for Brazil for his performances.
Wild card Mycael. Another one in Athletico Paranaense’s great lineage of goalkeepers, he is a Brazil youth international and will eagerly wait for a chance at the senior team.

How to Train your Dragon

vvv4231
Atlético Goianiense come fresh from a third consecutive Campeonato Goiano win and a Brasileirão Série B campaign in which, after a disappointing 11th place at the end of the first half of the league, they had the best performance of the second half and soared to fourth place, thus achieving promotion by the skin of their teeth. Ironically, albeit they were the lowest-ranked team to join the Brasileirão for the 2024 season, Atlético Goianiense are perhaps the most prepared of the newcomer teams to stay up, owing to their previous experience of three consecutive years in top-flight between 2020 and 2022.
Founded in 1937 as the first football club of the then four-year-old Goiânia and hugely attached to the business district of Campinas, to which it returned after a long absence following the renovation of the Antônio Accioly ground, Atlético Goianiense are perhaps on the best stretch of their over 80-year-old history, with seven of their thirteen Brasileirão appearances coming since 2010 and with their biggest honour, the Brasileirão Série B title, coming in 2016.
The club seeks to establish itself again as a constant presence at top-flight and employ the services of journeyman manager Jair Ventura for this purpose. Jair, best-known for his 2017 Libertadores quarter-final campaign at the helm of Botafogo, is a genuine firefighter manager, having achieved good campaigns with relegation-threatened sides Sport in 2020, Juventude in 2021 and Goiás in 2022. The 44-year-old manager will count on the brilliance of former Brazil youth international Shaylon, the goal-scoring and dribbling ability of youth graduate and returnee Luiz Fernando and key saves from captain and goalkeeper Ronaldo to achieve the club’s goal of staying up.
Starting XI (4-2-3-1) Ronaldo; Bruno Tubarão, Adriano Martins, Alix, Guilherme Romão; Roni, Baralhas, Shaylon; Alejo Cruz, Emiliano Rodríguez, Luiz Fernando.
Fun fact With a capacity of only 12,500, the Antônio Accioly will be the smallest ground among those of Brasileirão clubs in the 2024 season.
Familiar face Vagner Love, of CSKA Moscow fame, will be the side’s most recognisable player for foreign followers.
Star of the show Shaylon was the side’s best performer at the Campeonato Goiano, picking up 7 goals and 10 assists at the tournament.
Wild card Forward Daniel was the U20 team’s stand-out player at the Copinha and could compete for a place in the starting XI.

New season, same Hulk

thiaguu_g
The club was founded by students in 1908, in Belo Horizonte. Atlético are the biggest champions in Minas Gerais state, with 49 titles. Galo also have 3 Brasileirão titles, 2 Copa do Brasil titles and 1 Libertadores and has experienced incredible moments in the last 12 years, being one of the most victorious clubs in Brazil. The club's all-time top scorer is Reinaldo, who is known for being against the government during the military dictatorship in Brazil.
The nickname Galo was given in the 1930s, when a black and white rooster was winning fights in Belo Horizonte. In Brazilian jogo do bicho, the rooster number is 13, so the fans love this number and have it as a lucky number. Curiously, Atlético are the 2013 Libertadores champions, making fans' superstition stronger.
Atlético started the year after a good season in 2023, keeping Felipão as manager, but, after a terrible start in 2024 combined with attitudes that made fans angry, the club decided to fire Scolari, bringing Gabriel Milito to his place. In 3 games, Milito changed Atletico’s playstyle to retain ball possession and won the fifth Campeonato Mineiro crown in a row, which hasn't happened since the 1980s, when Galo won six in a row.
Hulk is Atlético’s best player and probably the best player in Brazil since 2021; besides him, Atlético have the 2023 Brasileirão’s top scorer and the 2022 Brasileirão’s best player awardee in the league’s year-end awards, Paulinho and Gustavo Scarpa. This attacking trio is expected to bring more titles to Galo with some players of the 2021 triplet and Bernard, club idol and Libertadores champion, who is coming back in June after 11 years.
Atlético have been very shy in the market in the last 3 seasons, bringing a lot of free agents and young players with potential for future sale, the only expensive player being Scarpa from Nottingham Forest. Galo are also investing in revealing players, the biggest example being now-Girona player Sávio.
Starting XI (3-1-4-2) Everson; Renzo Saravia, Mauricio Lemos, Bruno Fuchs, Jemerson, Guilherme Arana; Rodrigo Battaglia, Igor Gomes, Matías Zaracho; Paulinho, Hulk.
Fun fact Atlético is known for making incredible comebacks in recent years, like the last Campeonato Mineiro final, the 2013 Libertadores and the 2014 Copa do Brasil.
Familiar face Hulk, former Porto and Zenit player.
Star of the show Hulk has become a club idol since he arrived in 2021, winning the Brasileirão and the Copa do Brasil in the same year; he is headed to become Galo's top scorer in the 21st century this year.
Wild card Midfielder Alisson Santana: the 18-year-old player plays in the same position as Sávio and is receiving minutes under Scolari and Milito. He is being monitored by European clubs and has nice dribbling, speed and passing skills, being always a menace with the ball on his left foot.

Superman’s time to shine?

u/ZeZangoose
This Bahia team is an interesting case study. After having a majority of their shares bought by the City Group (of Manchester City fame), both overt optimism about the club’s future and doubts about becoming a mere sidekick to one of the world’s largest clubs have been on the mind of the average Bahia supporter.
The deal was finalized last year on 4 May, and the narrative was that 2023 was to be a transitional year for the club, seeing as the promised investments from the City Group had not yet been made, and the club finished the season in a disappointing 16th place, barely escaping relegation after a brave 4-1 effort against Atlético Mineiro (the best team of the second half of the season).
After a disappointing end to last season, Bahia made significant changes to their lineup, investing heavily in players such as Jean Lucas, Brazil-capped Everton Ribeiro and Santiago Arias from the Chile national team, among others, easily smashing the transfer record for teams from the Brazilian Northeast.
The team, thus far, managed by the legendary freekick master and former goalkeeper Rogério Ceni, has had mixed results, with moments of impressive showings and some not-so-amazing performances. Bahia’s great showings against Brasileirão Série B teams in the Copa do Nordeste were balanced by poor results against local rivals Vitória, losing 2 out of the 4 games between both teams and seeing their main rival lift the Campeonato Baiano trophy after 7 years.
These results have raised fears over the future of this team in this year’s Brasileirão. However, the present squad depth and quality in this team have not been seen at the club in a long time, so some fans are still hopeful for a good finish in the league.
Bahia’s best finish in the league in over 15 years has been 11th place. Now backed by the powerful City Group, will this year finally have them finishing at the top half of the table?
Starting XI (4-2-3-1) Marcos Felipe; Santiago Arias, Kanu, Víctor Cuesta, Rezende; Caio Alexandre, Jean Lucas, Everton Ribeiro; Thaciano, Everaldo, Cauly.
Fun fact Bahia’s mascot is a parody of Superman drawn up by the legendary cartoonist Ziraldo. He was chosen as a mascot because of his similar colors (red, white and blue) and the fact that, just like Bahia, Superman is invincible.
Familiar face Oscar Estupiñan: the Colombian striker on loan from Hull City has scored 4 goals in 4 games for the team thus far; however, the starting team’s striker is still not settled, with Rogerio Ceni rotating Everaldo and Thaciano in that position.
Star of the show Everton Ribeiro: with 22 caps for the Brazil national team, Everton Ribeiro is the most recognizable name in this squad. At 34 years of age, fans would say he’s started to decline in terms of quality, but his impact on the team has already been felt in these first few matches of the year, with lots of goals and plenty of assists.
Wild card At 24, Luciano Juba is this team’s wild card. Last year, he had the most productive year of his young career, racking up 20 goals and 18 assists in 53 games for the Brasileirão Série B team Sport, being touted as one of the more promising young players in the Brazilian Northeast. This year, he hopes to repeat his great 2023 in a more competitive league.

The most traditional club

u/_player-3
Botafogo, at the moment, are going through a rebuilding process after a chaotic start to the 2020s, with a relegation while placing 20th on the table in 2020, a return as a Brasileirão Série B champion in 2021, a Libertadores qualifying near-miss in 2022 and the most insane and unpredictable bottle job in football history last season. 2023 started as another fruitless year with the team failing to qualify for the Campeonato Carioca semifinals and an elimination in the round of 16 of the Copa do Brasil, but, in the Brasileirão, the team would have one of the best campaigns in the history of the competition at the halfway point, scoring 47 points in the first 19 matches. However, after the departure of manager Luis Castro, Botafogo would go on a terrible winless streak of 11 matches that would see them lose game after game leading to them losing the Brasileirão title, in one of the worst bottle jobs in football history, and a quarter-final exit in the Sudamericana.
The result of a 1942 merger between a rowing club founded in 1894 and a football club of the same name, both based in the eponymous elite Rio de Janeiro neighborhood, Botafogo are one of the four great traditional teams of Rio de Janeiro along with Vasco, Flamengo and Fluminense. In the 1960s, the club lived through what’s probably its most winning period, winning 4 Campeonato Carioca titles, which at the time was a highly prestigious tournament within Brazil, and was the foundation of Brazil’s World Cup-winning teams of 1962 and 1970 (with Garrincha, considered to this day one of the best Brazilian players of all time, as the team’s main star), culminating in a Brasileirão win in 1968. The 1970s and 1980s were rather unsuccessful periods for the club, but in the 1990s the team shot up once again to the top of Brazilian football with players like Túlio and Donizete and achieved a second Brasileirão win in 1995. The 2000s and 2010s would once again be hard times as the club experienced relegation four times, with three of them coming in the last decade. In September 2022, the club became a SAF under Brazil’s new private limited company model for football clubs, having 90% of its shares bought by American entrepreneur John Textor, who has worked to reshape the club after decades of bad management.
Following the end of 2023, with the gigantic shock of losing the title after 30 rounds in the lead, the team got rid of several players and coaches and brought in new blood to challenge for silverware in 2024. Artur Jorge is the recently hired coach for Botafogo after Tiago Nunes and Fábio Matias lead the team in the early months of 2024. Judging by his work at the portuguese club Braga, it is possible to assume that Artur will bring a more offensive style of play with heavy marking on the first line and the full-backs being constantly moving both in defense and attack and the midfielders dropping down to help with the ball output with the attacking scheme being built with passes breaking the opponent's defense lines. This style of play has managed to find good success for Artur Jorge as Braga are the 3rd club in goals scored in the Portuguese league.
Starting XI (4-2-3-1) Gatito; Damián Suaréz, Lucas Halter, Alexander Barboza, Marçal; Gregore, Danilo Barbosa, Eduardo; Júnior Santos, Savarino, Tiquinho Soares
Fun fact Botafogo is the team with the most players called up to defend Brazil in World Cups, with a total of 47 players, the most recent being goalkeeper Jefferson for the 2014 World Cup.
Familiar face Rafael, the right-back who played for Manchester United and Lyon, is currently rejoining the team after 8 months after suffering a serious injury to his right knee.
Star of the show Júnior Santos. He is the current top scorer for Botafogo in the history of the Libertadores by scoring 8 goals in just 4 games and could have a spectacular 2024.
Wild card Jeffinho. The young winger played for Botafogo in 2022 and went on loan to Lyon returned earlier this year and has been an important name for the offensive system.

More than a club, a state of mind

u/Andrelima13
Corinthians are undergoing a reformulation this year, after the departure at the end of 2023 of a board that had already been in power for 16 years and the dismissal of several players who were no longer performing as required. These changes were mainly motivated by the team's terrible performance in the previous year, falling in the group stage of the Libertadores and advancing through much more luck than merit in the Sudamericana and the Copa do Brasil, being eliminated in both at the semi-final stage, which, in line with the fight for the entire season against relegation in the Brasileirão, contributed to the season being a huge failure. Furthermore, the financial crisis, with the largest debt in Brazilian football, and the administrative crisis left by this board that was in power for 16 years revealed the club's need for a large change in 2024.
Founded in 1910, by workers in São Paulo, Corinthians was created as a form of resistance at a time when Brazilian football was completely elitist and restricted, and emerged to be a club that fought for the ideals of the people and would accept any and all fans, regardless of their social class, political positioning, race, etc., which made it considered the “people's club”, and contributes to having the second largest fanbase in the country, with around 30 million fans, in addition to several others spread out all over the world. Before the ‘90s, Corinthians was a club that dominated the state scene, but after the ‘90s, the team launched itself into the national, international and world scenario, winning several important titles during this period, among these 7 Brasileirão titles. In addition to all this, Corinthians stands out in Brazil for its fans, which are completely different from other Brazilian fans, supporting the team during the 90 minutes, without boos or complaints, which makes the Corinthians fans a true twelfth player, really making a difference during the games.
As it is a team undergoing reconstruction and with a recently arrived coach, Corinthians has been gradually evolving in terms of performance on the field. António Oliveira is a coach who likes a solid team defensively, who attacks mainly from the wings at speed, but he does not disdain creating plays in the midfield, defending with a mid/high block, seeking to put pressure on the opponent from the beginning of his moves. In this context, some players stand out, such as Félix Torres, showing himself to be very solid defensively and managing to cover this high line well when necessary; Raniele, a defensive midfielder who disarms and builds, being fundamental to the team's harmony and functioning; Rodrigo Garro, a midfielder who builds plays coming from both the midfielder and the wings, the team's true maestro; and the young winger Wesley, the team's most incisive player, full of dribbling and speed, representing very well the “joga bonito” characteristic of Brazilian players.
Starting XI (4-2-3-1) Cássio; Fagner, Félix Torres, Gustavo Henrique, Diego Palacios; Raniele, Maycon; Romero, Rodrigo Garro, Wesley; Yuri Alberto
Fun fact Corinthians has the longest-running sponsorship in Brazilian football, with the partnership with Nike being 21 years old.
Familiar face Cássio, who played for PSV and has been in Corinthians since 2012, is the longest-serving player in the Brasileirão, and definitely one of the most recognisable players in the league.
Star of the show Rodrigo Garro has just arrived this year and already is the best performer of the team, making a huge difference in the team's performance when he is playing.
Wild card Breno Bidon was one of the stars of Corinthians U20 team that has just won the Copinha, and can definitely help the senior team.

Criciúma

u/Videre26
Since manager Tencati arrived at the club in 2021, Criciúma have increasingly consolidated themselves as the best team in Santa Catarina. In 2023 the club won the Campeonato Catarinense and was promoted to the Brasileirão; this year, Tigre have already won the Recopa Catarinense and the Campeonato Catarinense again.
The team was founded in 1947, aiming to go head to head with other teams from the Santa Catarina coal region. After winning its first official title in 1968, the club closed in 1970 due to financial problems, and only returned to playing officially at the end of the decade. Criciúma's greatest achievement is the 1991 Copa do Brasil, beating Grêmio in the final. Next year, the team played in the Libertadores, only being eliminated by São Paulo in the quarter-finals.
After spending the 2000s alternating between the first three divisions of the Brasileirão, Criciúma returned to consolidate itself in the first and second divisions only in the first half of the 2010s, but after being relegated to the Brasileirão Série B, bad management took the club back to Brasileirão Série C and to the second division at state level. Fortunately, Criciúma managed to turn things around.
Starting XI (4-2-2-2) Gustavo; Jonathan, Rodrigo, Wilker, Marcelo Hermes; Claudinho, Barreto, Marquinhos Gabriel, Fellipe Mateus; Renato Kayzer, Éder
Fun fact When Criciúma won the Copa do Brasil, the team’s manager was Felipão, who went on to be the Brazil and Portugal manager years later.
Familiar face Bolasie hasn’t debuted yet, but he’s the most recognized player in the squad. He was successful at Crystal Palace due to his dribbling skills.
Star of the show Marquinhos Gabriel played for other Brazilian clubs, like Corinthians, Cruzeiro, Vasco and Athletico Paranaense, but in Criciúma he found supporters who really love him. Since 2022 he has been the team's main player.
Wild card Adrianinho is a young player that has incredible dribbling skills. Criciúma’s fans think he will be a nice player and deserves more chances in the starting lineup.

Match 2: CPWA Women's International Championship: Kiara Thompson vs. Sabina Bellini (c)
As much as this match was advertised, the hype just wasn't there. Sabina was a bit nervous going into her first title defense, especially at the biggest event for CPWA. Kiara felt like she was off her game a bit, which didn't help matters either. The only good thing to come out of this match was the interference from Big Angela to help Kiara, and "Otaku Girl 86" Michelle Lennox coming down to even up the odds. Sabina hit Fortuna Degli Angoli (Fortune of the Angels) to get the win and successfully retain the CPWA Women's International Championship.
1 out of 5 stars.

1 out of 5 stars.

The CPWA Women's Tag Team Championship match was slightly better than the previous match. However, it did suffer from having a few start and stop moments. Priscilla Pierce made her presence felt when she threw her pink dust into the eyes of Ferial, allowing Cynthia to hit Twisted Steele to get the win and her team becoming the new CPWA Women's Tag Team Champions.
2 out of 5 stars.
We cut to the backstage area and we see Masato Kojima being interviewed by Kimberly Reynolds. Kojima says that no one believed that he would reach this pinnacle in his career and that everyone said that he would only be a hardcore wrestler. Kojima also says that he will become the first Japanese-born CPWA World Heavyweight Champion.
We cut back to the ring.

Announcer: And his opponent, representing The Commonwealth, from Adelaide, Australia, he is Kelly Lawton.

Match 6: Cedric Jordan vs. Kelly Lawton
This was a last-week put-together match, despite both competitors feuding throughout the world. As much as this match was back-and-forth, the Philadelphia crowd didn't care for it. The match ended with Lawton hitting the Outback Cutter on Jordan to get the win.

Match 7: CPWA Trios Championships: MAGNUM Koyama, Jack Dos Santos, and Shaolin vs. The Cruiserweight Dream Team ("The Hi-Fli Kid" Jerome Evans, "The Korean Idol" Han Sang-Hoon, and Rory Irvine) (c)
One of the best matches of the night so far, and one that features the cruiserweights doing their thing once again. The match fast-paced, but not to the point where it would lose the Philly crowd. The match ended with Shaolin hitting Shaolin Style on "The Korean Idol" to get the win and for his team to regain the CPWA Trios Championships.
4 out of 5 stars.

4 out of 5 stars.
After the match, the Gordon Sisters and the Hart Sisters shook hands and hugged much to the approval of the Philadelphia crowd.

Announcer: And her opponent, from Bangkok, Thailand, she is the CPWA Women's Champion, Lightning Achara!
Match 9: CPWA Women's Championship: Rosa Corazon vs. Lightning Achara (c)
Pageantry aside, this match felt more like a one-sided battle as Lightning Achara had her way against Rosa. Despite the possible comebacks, Achara was able to put the match away with a Lightning Strikes to retain the CPWA Women's Championship.
1 out of 5 stars.

Announcer: Finally, he is the CPWA Hardcore Champion, Pretty Boy!
Match 10: CPWA Hardcore Championship: Raul Vega vs. Raymundo Vega vs. Ramon Vega vs. Angel Vega vs. Marco Rocha vs. Pretty Boy (c)
The 6-way dance for the CPWA Hardcore Championship can be described in so many words, but the ones that stick out the most have to be brutal, barbaric, insane, ludicrous, violent, and epic. The Philadelphia crowd were vocal for this match. It looked as if Pretty Boy was going to retain the CPWA Hardcore Championship, but each time, someone prevented him from doing so. In one instance, "Georgia Woman" Jenny Marshall got herself involved and attacked Pretty Boy, even going as far to use "Florida Man" Gary Strange's alligator, Sunshine, to deal some damage. Despite getting some retribution for "Florida Man", she ended up getting chokeslammed for her troubles. Then, Leopard Shiraishi got herself involved as she attacked Pretty Boy. Suddenly, Tigress Ayala would get herself involved in the match and it looked like she was going to attack Shiraishi with a steel chair, only for her to turn against Pretty Boy. Both Shiraishi and Ayala were brutally chokeslammed through a table. This led to a low blow from Raul, leading to an Angel's Wings from Angel, followed by Ramon hitting the Vega's Edge on Pretty Boy. This allowed Raymundo to hit the San Juan Frog Splash to get the win and become CPWA Hardcore Champion.

A very decent and solid towards the end match that saw lots of physicality and hard-impact attacks from both competitors. Maiavia would end the match with the Kahuna Splash to retain the CPWA International Championship.
3 out of 5 stars.
We cut to a video package highlighting the feud between Jason Reynolds, Owen Benoit-Jericho, and Deron "Ron" Jordan over the CPWA Cruiserweight Championship, which lasts for two minutes. The video package ends and we cut back to the ring.

Match 12: CPWA Cruiserweight Championship: Jason Reynolds vs. Owen Benoit-Jericho vs. Deron "Ron" Jordan (c)
It wasn't a good outing but it certainly wasn't a bad one when it came to the CPWA Cruiserweight Championship. Jason Reynolds felt like a non-factor in this match, despite the fans getting behind him. OBJ looked more than certain that he was going to win the match, but Deron "Ron" Jordan prevented any chance of that happening. Jordan would win the match with a Solar Eclipse on OBJ to retain the CPWA Cruiserweight Championship.
2 out of 5 stars.
We cut to a video package for the CPWA Tag Team Championships, which lasts for a minute and thirty seconds. The video package ends and we cut back to the ring.

This was a big moment for Elijah Jordan in this match, who had been on the shelf since late last year. Elijah Jordan showed out om what was a demolition derby of a match. Both Iron-Willed and Soldiers of Misfortune looked to have the match won, but both teams were at each others' throats, causing them to eventually fight each other. This led to the Odenkirks, The Mortician, and Mangod to fight them. It came down to the Newtons and the Jordans, but it would be Elijah Jordan who would reach the gold and give himself and Shelton the CPWA Tag Team Championships!
We cut to a video package highlighting "The Number One Pick" LeJuan Jones as CPWA World Heavyweight Champion, which lasts for three minutes. The video package ends and we cut back to the ring.

Announcer: Finally, accompanied to the ring by Brother Julius, from Columbus, Ohio, he is the CPWA World Heavyweight Champion "The Number One Pick," LeJuan Jones.
Match 14: CPWA World Heavyweight Championship: Masato Kojima vs. Vader vs. "The Number One Pick" LeJuan Jones (c)
An epic main event that saw an unlikely challenger in Kojima giving it his all, an outsider in Vader proving to be a threat, and the reigning, defending CPWA World Heavyweight Champion doing battle for the promotion's coveted prize. It was all LeJuan and Vader for much of the match, despite Kojima's input. After a Vader Bomb on Kojima, it looked like Vader had the win secured until Brother Julius made his presence felt. Vader took care of Brother Julius with a Vader Bomb, only for "The Number One Pick" to knock Vader out with a steel chair, leading to a Game Winner for the pin and retain the CPWA World Heavyweight Championship.
4 out of 5 stars.
LeJuan Jones is presented the CPWA World Heavyweight Championship. He walks up the ramp, leading to the entrance stage. "The Number One Pick" raises the CPWA World Heavyweight Championship above his head as pyro goes off as High$takes fades to black.

2024.03.28 12:01 SkyGinge 🎵The Throwback Thursday Supervote🎵 - Heat Eleven: Liverpool 2023

As a reminder of the format, each week we'll be revisiting a past contest from Malmö 2013 to Malmö 2024, sharing fond memories and voting on our favourites as a reddit community. The top 8 countries from each vote will advance to the next round, where they will join the top 8 of our regular 2024 ranking thread. These votes will run weekly until the end of April, when finally we will crown the subreddit's favourite Eurovision entry ever!
Last week we voted on Turin 2022, and these eight acts qualified to the semi-finals.
EDIT: The vote has now closed! Look out for the results soon :)

~Heat Eleven: Liverpool 2023~

In the final heat of the Throwback Thursday Supervote, it's time to revisit the most recent contest! Owing to security and practical concerns following the Russian invasion of Ukraine, 2022 runners-up the United Kingdom stepped up to produce the show on behalf of UA:PBC, hosting the contest for a record-extending ninth time. Staged in Liverpool, home of the Beatles and many other music superstars, the BBC created a celebration of Ukrainian success and resilience, whilst also taking the opportunity for lots of typically-British self-effacing nods at the UK's continued Eurovision failures over the past couple of decades. Veteran commentor Graham Norton and ITV-regular Alisha Dixon were joined as hosts by Ukrainian singer Julia Sanina and immediate fan-favourite Hannah Waddingham.
The ESC contest was dominated by the fierce rivalry between two Nordic heavyweights. Whilst Finland's Käärijä dominated the televote, ignited the hearts of his nation and earnt thousands of fans across the globe, it was Sweden's Loreen who took home the trophy, thanks to her own domination of the jury vote, becoming the first female artist to win Eurovision twice and bringing Sweden a record-matching 7th victory. Israel, Italy and Norway completed the top five. Behind them, many fan favourites unfortunately failed to find as wide an audience in the general viewer-base, as Slovenia, Spain and France failed to set the scoreboard alight.
Missed it the first time around, or want a trip down memory lane? If you've got time to spare, why not watch the final?

~How to Vote~

To vote, please submit your ranking as a top-level comment in this thread. You can either submit your top ten or your full ranking of all 37 entries. Your ranking will then be transformed into a Eurovision style vote - 12 points for your #1, 10 points for your #2, and so on. The vote will be open until Sunday 31st March 23:59CET; the results will then be posted in a separate post at the start of the next week.
u/TrollHunter87 will very kindly be using his automated script to collate these rankings. If you want to ensure that your vote counts, make sure that:
  1. You provide your ranking in a top-level comment
  2. You write the countries in separate lines, and the lines start with a number (example: "1. United States")
  3. You either use the Country name, the song name or the flag emoji of the country.
  4. You can't have a tie between songs
  5. Don't just put "1." at the start of every row and let reddit do its thing. Actually put the all the numbers from 1 to 10 in the markdown
  6. If you're unsure, just look at the other comments. Almost all of them are valid.

2024.03.20 16:04 Hexadecadic Doomsday’s origin

I realize that there might be more than three different origin stories for Doomsday (e.g., I think there was even one in “Smallville”), but of the ones listed below, which is your favorite?
a. Created by Lex Luthor in “Man of Steel” using Kryptonite and General Zod’s corpse.
b. Created by Lex Luthor in “Superman and Lois” by using some kind of ray gun and killing and resurrecting Bizarro over and over again until he mutated into Doomsday.
c. Created by the alien Bertron, who repeatedly cloned and genetically engineered Doomsday for decades after each time he died on ancient Krypton, as revealed in “Superman/Doomsday: HuntePrey”.
While I do find neat the idea of Doomsday being created from other, dead Kryptonians, I don’t think Lex Luthor has that much scientific genius to be able to pull that off. Plus, the two origins of Doomsday involving Lex Luthor just seem so rushed compared to the comic book origin.

2024.03.02 21:29 M_Tootles Varys Didn't Pay For Gendry's Apprenticeship, As We're Invited To Believe. It Was Actually...(Spoilers Extended)

I'm sherpa-ing a friend through their first re-read of ASOIAF (their original read coming in the late-00s) and, needless to say, wildly corrupting her with my heretical notions in the process. It's great fun.
Every day she sends me her "notes": questions and observations about what she's reading. It's nice, because I don't have to worry about "spoiling" her for things to come, since she's read it all before (even if she only half remembers most of it), so I can just dive in with explanations and explorations regarding things like "wait I don't remember, who killed Jon Arryn really?" that draw on material from the entire series.
She says she's loving it on a level she didn't even dream of when she read it the first time. I'm having a blast, too, and already (1/3 through AGOT) she's made several observations that have given me pause, given rise to fresh speculation, etc.
OK, that's the "background".
So yesterday, one of the notes she sent me was this:
Guy who paid Gendry's apprentice fee was overweight and/or strong, brown beard with red (or a red beard dyed brown to disguise?) wearing purple cloak with silver thread
When our hours-long debriefing/discussion got around to this note, I told her that the conventional wisdom is that it was Varys in disguise who paid the armorer Tobho Mott to take on Gendry as an apprentice.
She was dubious, especially because of the beard having different colors to it.
Her doubt gave me pause: that is a strange detail to include, if it's just Varys gluing on a mummer's beard.
I clarified that I'd never been fully convinced it was Varys — we're to believe Varys was running around doing personal favor type stuff for Robert? stuff that really had nothing to do with intelligence gathering or informing or whatever? why? — and told her that I remember that I had at some point or points in the past run down every instance of those purple and silver house colors in the text, but that I couldn't remember what I found.
My curiosity thus aroused, I punched "purple" and "silver" into asearchoficeandfire and pulled up the paragraph that had prompted her notes:
"He was stout, round of shoulder, not so tall as you. Brown beard, but there was a bit of red in it, I'll swear. He wore a rich cloak, that I do remember, heavy purple velvet worked with silver threads, but the hood shadowed his face and I never did see him clear."
My old habits kicked in (I'm retired from ASOIAF writing/posting!!! Really!!!) and I compulsively scrolled the results, knowing I'd done so in the past but totally blank as to what I'd found/provisionally concluded.
Bingo.
Petyr had given [Alayne] a roll of arms to study, so she knew their heraldry if not their faces. The red castle was Redfort, plainly; a short man with a neat grey beard and mild eyes. Lady Anya was the only woman amongst the Lords Declarant, and wore a deep green mantle with the broken wheel of Waynwood picked out in beads of jet. Six silver bells on purple, that was [Lord Benedar] Belmore, pear-bellied and round of shoulder. His beard was a ginger-grey horror sprouting from a multiplicity of chins. (AFFC Alayne I)
This isn't just "kind of" a match, this is exact, especially accounting for the passage of years since the mystery man paid for Gendry's apprenticeship.
Line it up.
Mystery Man:
"He was stout, round of shoulder, not so tall as you.
Lord Benedar Belmore:
Belmore, pear-bellied and round of shoulder.
Mystery Man (years ago):
Brown beard, but there was a bit of red in it, I'll swear.
Lord Benedar Belmore ("now"):
His beard was... ginger-grey
"Ginger" being red, with the brown hair now gone to grey.
With the direct textual match clearly established, in particular by the duplication of the "round of shoulder" verbiage, let's now take a look at the full description of Gendry's mysterious benefactor and see how it jibes with the provisional notion that it might have been Lord Benedar Belmore:
"The truth now," Ned urged. "The streets are full of strong boys. The day you take on an apprentice without a fee will be the day the Wall comes down. Who paid for him?"
"A lord," the master said reluctantly. "He gave no name, and wore no sigil on his coat. He paid in gold, twice the customary sum, and said he was paying once for the boy, and once for my silence."
"Describe him."
"He was stout, round of shoulder, not so tall as you. Brown beard, but there was a bit of red in it, I'll swear. He wore a rich cloak, that I do remember, heavy purple velvet worked with silver threads, but the hood shadowed his face and I never did see him clear."
A lord. It's right there. Gendry's lordly benefactor could have been Benedar Belmore.
"Varys Dunnit" suddenly begins to seem like what I believe it is: a first order red herring, baldly dangled before us by the text shortly after the identity of Gendry's benefactor is established as a mystery for us to contemplate when we learn that Varys can disguise himself as a "stout" man with, if not a beard, then whiskers:
"What would you have me do?" asked the torchbearer, a stout man in a leather half cape. Even in heavy boots, his feet seemed to glide soundlessly over the ground. A round scarred face and a stubble of dark beard showed under his steel cap, and he wore mail over boiled leather, and a dirk and shortsword at his belt. It seemed to Arya there was something oddly familiar about him. (AGOT Arya III)
The voice was strangely familiar, yet it took Ned Stark a moment to place it. "Varys?" he said groggily when it came. He touched the man's face. "I'm not … not dreaming this. You're here." The eunuch's plump cheeks were covered with a dark stubble of beard. Ned felt the coarse hair with his fingers. Varys had transformed himself into a grizzled turnkey, reeking of sweat and sour wine. (AGOT Eddard XV)
"A dark stubble" is not the same as a full-on beard, let alone a beard with gingered in it!
It could of course be argued that Varys was using a different disguise back when he putatively paid for Gendry's apprenticeship.
While that's not technically impossible, though, it would make no literary sense. That is, it makes no sense to offer the real solution so soon after a mystery is introduced, leave it "settled" for three books, then suddenly introduce an alternate solution whose tighter fit (full actual beard with the requisite red color, albeit "aged" with grey hair, exact match of the memorable "round of shoulder" language) draws our attention to the incongruities in the original "answer", only to eventually reaffirm the original answer. But that same sequence of revelations is in keeping with a sensible development of the narrative whereby the initial "answer" overtly offered to the reader proves to be a red herring which is later shown to be such when we're given new information (e.g. that Lord Belmore exists, dresses in purple and silver, is "round of shoulder", and has a partially ginger beard).
So I don't think Varys was just using a different fake beard back then. No, I'm convinced that GRRM held back the first hints of the real answer until AFFC. I'm further convinced that the real answer — that Lord Benedar Belmore, acting at the behest of Jon Arryn, brought Gendry to Tobho Mott and paid for Gendry's apprenticeship — makes far more sense than the hypothesis that "Varys paid for Gendry's apprenticeship" does.
Why?
Consider: As Lord of the Vale, Jon Arryn was Benedar Belmore's liege lord. At the same time, Jon was a "second father" to Robert (Gendry's father) as well as Robert's Hand. So Jon cared about Robert, and beyond that he was officially charged with carrying out Robert's business (while Lord Belmore was, in turn, Jon Arryn's sworn bannerman). What's more, we're told that King's Hands carry out their kings' dirty work:
"The king eats, they say, and the Hand takes the shit." (AGOT Eddard I)
Safeguarding one of Robert's bastards would seem to qualify: Robert fucked a girl and impregnated her ("the king eats") and Jon Arryn had to deal with the not-so-savory consequences ("the Hand takes the shit").
Indeed, the idea that Robert's Hand and surrogate father Jon Arryn might have been moved to make sure Robert's bastards were provided for is foregrounded twice in AGOT, both overtly, when Littlefinger tells Ned that Robert "doubtless" charged Jon Arryn with ensuring that his baseborn children were "provided for"—
"Why would Jon Arryn take a sudden interest in the king's baseborn children?"
The short man gave a sodden shrug. "He was the King's Hand. Doubtless Robert asked him to see that they were provided for." (AGOT Eddard IX)
—and implicitly, when we meet Robert's bastard daughter Mya Stone, who was given a position in what was then Jon Arryn's household with a social station akin to that which an armoreblacksmith like Gendry might hope to attain.
Just as it makes sense, then, that Jon Arryn was tasked with seeing to Gendry's well-being, so does it make sense that he might have entrusted his bannerman Lord Benedar Belmore to deliver Gendry to Tobho Mott and to pay for his apprenticeship. Why? We certainly have no reason to doubt that Lord Benedar Belmore was loyal to his liege lord. Indeed, Belmore's participation in the Lords Declarant rebellion against Littlefinger's rule dovetails with the notion that he might have been especially loyal to Jon Arryn, and thus capable of being trusted with a mission like placing Robert's bastard son Gendry with Tobho Mott:
Sansa knew that Jon Arryn's bannermen resented Lysa's marriage and begrudged Petyr his authority as Lord Protector of the Vale. The senior branch of House Royce was close to open revolt over her aunt's failure to aid Robb in his war, and the Waynwoods, Redforts, Belmores, and Templetons were giving them every support. (AFFC Alayne I)
Meanwhile, Belmore's specific behaviorole in the Lords Declarant's parlay with Littlefinger just so happens to 'rhyme' with the notion that he delivered Gendry to Tobho Mott. That is, Belmore's shepherding Gendry, King Robert's bastard son, to safety as an apprentice armorer can be seen as 'rhyming' with Belmore's notable focus on shepherding Jon Arryn's (maybe bastard?) son Robert away from Littlefinger and to safety:
Lord Belmore, first of the six to reach the Gates, had sent a raven to tell Littlefinger that no more food would go up to the Eyrie until he sent Lord Robert down. (AFFC Alayne I)
"Give us the boy," said Lord Belmore, "and you may depart the Vale unmolested for your proper seat at Harrenhal." (ibid.)
"Jape all you like, Littlefinger," Lord Belmore blustered. "The boy shall come with us." (ibid)
Moreover, there is a very good reason to believe that Jon Arryn may have been closer to Benedar Belmore than he may have been to some of his other lords and thus to believe that Jon may have been willing to trust Belmore with a sensitive, secret task like taking Gendry to Tobho Mott and paying for his apprenticeship: Jon Arryn's little brother Ronnel Arryn was married to... a Belmore:
[Petyr explaining why Harry the Heir is "the Heir" to Sansa:] "Lord Jasper Arryn, begin with him. Jon Arryn's father. He begot three children, two sons and a daughter. Jon was the eldest, so the Eyrie and the lordship passed to him. ... Lord Jasper's younger son, Ser Ronnel Arryn, wed a Belmore girl, but only rang her once or twice before dying of a bad belly." (AFFC Alayne II)
Setting aside this family tie between Jon Arryn and Benedar Belmore, there's also a certain poetic, 'rhyming' resonance between what Littlefinger says about Lord Belmore here—
Belmore is corrupt and can be bought. (ibid.)
—and the idea that Belmore once paid off Tobho Mott to take Gendry as an apprentice.
But it's a throwaway bit of description from Littlefinger's confrontation with the Lords Declarant that gives us what is in my opinion the definitive authorial wink confirming that it was indeed Lord Benedar Belmore who, acting on behalf of Lord Jon Arryn (who, to repeat, was surrogate father and Hand to Gendry's father, Robert, and who hence would have been inclined to and/or told to take care of Robert's son Gendry), delivered the money to pay for Gendry's apprenticeship to a fancy blacksmith, back before the brown hairs in Belmore's beard turned grey:
Belmore was soon puffing like a bellows, and Redfort's face turned as grey as his hair. (AFFC Alayne I)
Get it? GRRM writes about Belmore seeming like a blacksmith's bellows — the very tool the blacksmith's apprentice Gendry is working just before we "meet" him when he is first introduced to Ned by Tobho Mott — and then immediately makes a reference to somebody whose name is "Red" having their hair turns grey with age. This is GRRM telling us that if we're thinking it might have been Lord Belmore who paid for Gendry to learn to work a bellows back before Belmore's red beard began to turn grey, we're right.
"So what?" it will inevitably be asked.
How exactly Belmore's knowledge of Gendry's existence might prove important in the future is hard to say. Belmore is part of Littlefinger's food-hoarding scheme (a "penny stock-piling" scheme, as I suspect GRRM thinks of it), but he's clearly dubious:
Alayne was so grateful that she hugged him. "Thank you. Have you seen my father, ser?"
"Down in the vaults, " Ser Lothar said, "inspecting Lord Nestor's granaries with Lord Grafton and Lord Belmore."
The vaults were large and dark and filthy. Alayne lit a taper and clutched her skirt as she made the descent. Near the bottom, she heard Lord Grafton's booming voice, and followed."The merchants are clamoring to buy, and the lords are clamoring to sell," the Gulltowner was saying when she found them. Though not a tall man, Grafton was wide, with thick arms and shoulders. His hair was a dirty blond mop. "How am I to stop that, my lord?"
"Post guardsmen on the docks. If need be, seize the ships. How does not matter, so long as no food leaves the Vale.
"These prices, though," protested fat Lord Belmore," these prices are more than fair."
"You say more than fair, my lord. I say less than we would wish. Wait. If need be, buy the food yourself and keep it stored. Winter is coming. Prices must go higher."
"Perhaps," said Belmore, doubtfully. (TWOW Alayne I)
Could Belmore's knowledge become important somehow after the hoarding scheme blows up in Littlefinger's face and Belmore breaks with him?
Or is simply important that Belmore knows about Gendry because if Belmore knows, Littlefinger knows?
Or perhaps it has no major future relevance. Perhaps the Truth that Belmore paid Tobho Mott is simply a more satisfying solution than the Varys answer, as it underlines the ways in which Lord Jon Arryn continued to safeguard the interests of his surrogate son Robert in the years after Robert became king and Jon his hand.
PS: One final note. I googled around to see if anyone had written up the case for Belmore before. When I found [one person briefly making the case in a reply], I had to laugh, because the commenter was my dearly departed interlocutor IllyrioMoParties. FWIW, he's started a substack, check it out here: https://illyriomoparties.substack.com/
