2024.05.04 19:26 OverRepresentative81 I finally got my Champion Mat!!

I finally got my Champion Mat!!
So today I was the freaking best Player at the cup. I went 4-0-0 and shaked hands with my last opponent so that he could win the Match and we both go to the top Cut. He needed the points for Worlds and I wanted the Mat. We've played the top Cut and I won again and so did he and we both were up against each other in the final. Since we already knew that he would be the "winner" we played best of 1 for fun and he won by a lucky draw and amped me for his last two prices. I had game in hand and one price left so it was very fine with me. He got his points, I got my Champion Mat and I'm so unbelievable happy. So I got 4 little codes for you guys! Have fun, be kind and keep going!! All of you can also get those mats✨️✨️

2024.04.10 09:54 growth-industries Endometriosis left me bedbound. Medical cannabis gave me my life back

Doctors thought it was musculoskeletal and sent her for physio, but that didn’t help.
Her bloating was put down to irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) – but changes in diet didn’t ease her symptoms either.
When the agony worsened in her 30s, the mother-of-two found herself bedbound and unable to look after her children. She was prescribed a range of painkillers, including opioids.
It would take two decades – when she was 37 – for her to be correctly diagnosed with endometriosis, which affects one in 10 women in the UK (1.5 million women).
By then, the disease had spread to multiple organs. “Looking back, I had endometriosis most of my life,” she told i. “Because it was misdiagnosed, it had a chance to grow and it had spread quite badly. It had spread to my gallbladder, my ovaries and my intestines, causing more intense pain.”
After suffering problems taking opioids, Ms Bardsley says she has got her life back after using medicinal cannabis.
She is one of thousands of endometriosis sufferers who have secretly used the class B drug, either illicitly or legally, to manage their pain. A survey by Edinburgh University of 2,500 women with the disease found a third had used cannabinoids – compounds found in the cannabis plant – with around half saying it gave them relief from symptoms.
Research suggests cannabis suppresses pain receptors and has a protective effect on the gut, the health of which has been linked to the progression of endometriosis.
Endometriosis occurs when tissue similar to the lining of the uterus grows outside the uterus. This leads to inflammation and scar tissue forming. As well as causing severe pain in the pelvis and extreme pain during periods and sex, it can make it harder to get pregnant.
Ms Bardsley, from East Sussex, had a laparoscopy – an operation in which a camera is inserted into the pelvis via a small cut near the navel – which is the only definitive way to diagnose the disease.
Sadly, she is not alone in how long it took to get answers: On average it takes nearly nine years from onset of symptoms to get a diagnosis, according to Endometriosis UK.
There is currently no cure. Treatment includes hormone medicine and surgery to remove the endometriosis tissue.
Ms Bardsley, who runs a coffee shop in Nutley, East Sussex, says the delay in diagnosis has robbed her of living her life to the fullest.
“I’ve spent so much time lying in my bed with my TENS machine on. I had to save all my energy for work to earn money, so I had to compromise on my social life. I’d go on holiday and I just be in bed,” she said.
The removal of the endometriosis during the laparoscopy had limited effects for Ms Bardsley, and she was prescribed the strong painkiller codeine. “I was taking eight a day, for around nine months,” she explained. “No-one said to stop taking it. And then a consultant I saw did say you shouldn’t be on it that long.”
Codeine is not usually recommended for the treatment of chronic pain. It can cause life-threatening breathing problems, constipation, headache or dizziness, drowsiness, nausea and vomiting.
The drug can cause addiction and tolerance can develop, when it becomes less effective and the body needs higher doses to feel the same relief.
When the medication is stopped, severe withdrawal symptoms can include head and muscle aches, mood swings, insomnia, nausea and diarrhoea.
“I felt extremely nauseous and had headaches and trying to come off the codeine was horrible,” said Ms Bardsley. “I hadn’t realised the damage it can do to your body.”
Ms Bardsley knew of two friends with endometriosis who had found relief from their pain using medicinal cannabis, and so she obtained a private prescription, through one of the UK’s major medical cannabis providers, Curaleaf Clinic.
She says she “didn’t bother” asking her GP for a prescription, given how difficult it is to get one, despite it being legalised for certain conditions in 2018.
Within a month of using it, Ms Bardsley felt a difference, but it took a few months for her to feel the full benefit.
“Before the pain was definitely 10 out of 10, and every day,” she said. “By the end of month three, I was like, wow, I felt like a different person.
“I was taking the oils and vaping at the start, but then the pain was so under control with oils that I stopped vaping.”
“I don’t have daily pain now. I have probably two or three days a month where I’m bad, and the pain will be six out of 10. But I can cope with that.
“I’ve been able to focus on my businesses and my family life is so much better.”
The cost of her prescription is around £50 a month. “I don’t think that’s too bad. It’s worth it to me.
“As a side note, I’ve got really bad ADHD. And I have noticed that the cannabis really helps with that as well. My ability to focus, my drive and motivation, and clarity has improved so much.”

How cannabis is thought to help endometriosis

Currently, over 60 countries have legalised some form of medicinal cannabis. In the UK, prescribing the drug for certain conditions by a specialist doctor to treat health conditions was technically made legal in 2018.
Medical conditions that can qualify for cannabis include severe epilepsy, those with certain multiple sclerosis symptoms and adults with vomiting or nausea caused by chemotherapy.
But fewer than five NHS patients have been given the medicine. The government says safety needs to be proven by research before a wider rollout.
Private practices, however, have a far wider scope for prescriptions, including for chronic pain, certain psychiatric disorders and various neurological conditions.
Research suggests the microbiota – collection of bacteria in the gut – may contribute to the progression of endometriosis and lesion growth.
A study published last November in the Journal of Clinical Medicine found that cannabis shows promise in pain management in endometriosis.
Researchers analysed 140 scientific papers and concluded that cannabis-derived endocannabinoids have a protective effect on the gut, reducing gut inflammation and enhancing permeability. This alleviates bloating, a common symptom of endometriosis.
Additionally, cannabinoids inherently suppress pain receptors and act as a natural painkiller.
However, the authors said clinical studies are needed to determine the effectiveness.
Now, NHS Scotland is funding a clinical trial to research the effects of CBD on pelvic pain related to endometriosis.
Carried out by University of Edinburgh scientists, it is hoped it will pave the way for wider access to cannabis-based medicines on the NHS.

2024.03.13 17:29 Theclaaw Welcome to the 2024 r/NWSL Kickoff Countdown for the 🌹Portland Thorns🌹

Welcome to the 2024 NWSL Kickoff Countdown for the 🌹Portland Thorns🌹
It's time to BUILD A BONFIRE 🔥🔥🔥

PTFC!!
___
BACKGROUND
Head Coach: Mike Norris
Norris is in his second year of head coaching after taking the reins last year. He has an extensive background as an assistant coach through Canada’s youth system (mainly as a GK coach) and was the Thorns assistant coach before being appointed head coach. Under Norris, the Thorns finished 10-5-7 and was second in the table last year (more on this later). Norris was an obvious choice in being appointed head coach and did not rock the boat much throughout the season. His second season will feature a large mix of older veteran talent and quite a few new/incoming players. Thorns have plenty of talent for Norris to work with as long as he is able to rotate them effectively.
General Manager: Karina LeBlanc
Hired as the first sole GM of the Portland Thorns, LeBlanc has made plenty of moves in her short time. Signing or trading for players such as Hina Sugita and Janine Beckie, LeBlanc is not afraid of making moves. However, LeBlanc has fumbled a few times; most notably, drafting Sydny Nasello in 2022 without doing research into her social media history and recently losing out on re-signing restricted free agent Natalia Kuikka. Nevertheless, LeBlanc has shown she will do what she can to bring in players that want to be here and make the team stronger. With many flashy moves in her first few years, it will be interesting to see if she can keep it up.
Captain: Christine Sinclair
The Canadian GOAT. World record holder in international goals. A true Portland Thorn's and Women’s soccer legend. Sinc embodies what it means to be a Thorn. There is no other team she wanted to be on and we are lucky to have her. Though she has slowed down in recent years, the Thorns would not be who they are today without Sinc. This is the last season with Sinclair, but she has cemented herself as a true legend of the Portland Thorns. (no I wasn’t crying while writing this :( )
Stadium: Providence Park, Soccer City, USA

Onward Rose City!
Providence Park is located in the Goose Hollow neighborhood in southwest Portland, Oregon. According to very trustworthy Wikipedia, Providence Park is the “oldest facility to be configured as a soccer-specific stadium for use by a MLS team” (shared with the Portland Timbers). The stadium can hold over 25,000 fans and held the highest average attendance up until recent expansions. Providence Park is historic when talking about American soccer. The atmosphere is electric on game day and has been my favorite stadium to visit so far (definitely not biased here).
Ownership: RAJ Sports
Thank God the wait is finally over! The Thorns were sold to RAJ Sports in January of this year for $63 million after it was announced over a year before they were up for sale. They are led by Lisa Bhathal Merage and Alex Bhathal, who took over the board operations. Part of the sale agreement allows the Thorns to continue to play in Providence Park through 2035 and training there through 2025. Past that, the Bathals are expecting to build a dedicated Thorns training facility. RAJ Sports should be a significant improvement over the previous ownership group.

Kits: Definitely a big change in kits this year. While last year’s “Ed Hardy” kit really brought the wow factor (whether good or bad), the Thorns really toned it down this year.

Forever Thorn Kit
The Thorns primary kit is the Forever Thorn kit. It represents the “expression of joy of matchday in PDX”. The bold colors embody raising the bar of the club, the league, and the women’s game.

Reflection Kit
The secondary kit, titled Reflection, is based around the connection with the fans, city of Portland, and the club. It is a reflection of the community and civic pride. It is all dark and very clean.

Supporters Groups: Rose City Riveters
One of the loudest and proudest supporters groups in the league, the Rose City Riveters are an eclectic group brought together support women’s soccer in PDX. Brought together by the love of women’s soccer in Portland, they also hold many charity events and volunteer opportunities in the city. They make north end of Providence Park an exciting and electric atmosphere, with great chants and even better tifos
Subreddit: /Thorns - Decently active compared to some other teams
News and Commentary: Stumptown Footy and Riveting are 2 independent publications that follow Portland soccer and the Thorns respectively. Both’s sole focus is on the Thorns & Timbers.
I do want to give a sad shout out to local reporter, Ryan Clarke of The Oregonian, who was unfortunately moved to cover the Oregon Ducks/B1G from the Timbers/Thorns with a replacement still TBD. If you followed local coverage of the Thorns or Timbers, Ryan was the one to follow and this loss really hurts getting good coverage of the teams.
Key Twitter Follows for Team Insights:

• NWSL Shield: Supporters’ Shield: 2016, 2021
• NWSL Challenge Cup: 2021
___
2023 Season Review
The Thorns ended the 2023 season with a record 10-5-7 and 2nd in the standings for a second year in a row. Making it into the postseason with a first round bye, they would eventually lose to the eventual champions NY/NJ Gotham FC. They also finished third in their region in the Challenge Cup, completely missing its playoffs.
The 2023 season was a mixture of good and bad. Starting in the off-season, former head coach Rhian Wilkinson resigned, at the request of the players, after an investigation cleared her from having a romantic relationship with a current player (it was self-reported by Wilkinson and there were romantic feelings between the two). Thorns hired then assistant Mike Norris to take over as head coach. In January, due to findings from the joint NWSL-NWSLPA investigation, it was announced head trainer Pierre Soubrier was fired. The investigation found that Soubrier had inappropriately given 2 players medication with codeine, including one without informed consent. It was also found that assistant coach Sophie Clough had inappropriately kissed a player’s neck after the semifinals win and she was subsequently fired.
After that start to the off-season, the Thorns finally kicked off their regular season play ready to defend their 2022 title. Early on, the team started off their first 6 games 3-3-0. During this time, we saw the 2nd ever goalkeeper goal in league history in stoppage time by Bella Bixby (a sick back heel goal too!) to secure a 3-3 draw against ACFC!
Continuing on through June, the Thorns posted a record of 4-1-2; finally dropping a match against the Dash. They were able to get their first ever win in Lumen Field against OL Reign, breaking Sophia Smith’s 7 game goal drought (in a really cool doubleheader with the men’s teams). This pushed the Thorns into the #1 slot of the standings. The downside of June, was the permanent transfer of former Thorn Lindsey Horan to OL (not Reign, the other OL). Although Horan hadn’t played with the Thorns in over a year, there was always that small hope she would return.
Unfortunately, after June, it kinda went downhill for the Thorns. In the last 8 games of the season, the Thorns went 3-1-5, dropping to 2nd in the standings and finishing the regular season with an absolute blow out, losing 5-1 against ACFC, it seemed Sophia Smith’s injury and the World Cup really took the wind out of the Thorn’s sails (still thankful that the injury was only an MCL sprain after the way the replayed look).
Heading into the postseason, the Thorns had a first round bye, meaning an automatic ticket to hosting a semifinals game. Unfortunately, that’s where the good news ended for the Thorns, as they lost 1-0 to Gotham FC from a heartbreaking extra time goal by Katie Stengal.
All in all, the Thorns performed as expected. They were one of the league favorites to contend for the shield and the championship, falling just short of both. And while they did not take home any hardware as a team, there were quite a few individual awards. Sophia Smith was the Golden Boot winner with 11 goals (even after missing time for the World Cup and injury). Her and Sam Coffey were also named to the First XI.

Players In

  • Marie Müller - MF - SC Freiburg - Young MF from the youth German system that should add good depth to the midfield
  • Isabella Obaze - D - FC Rosengård - Another young player for the Danish international system. Should contend for a starting spot, but also add great depth

___
ROSTER
Preseason Roster
Goalkeepers (4): Kat Asman (DRAFT), Bella Bixby, Shelby Hogan, Lauren Kozal
Defenders (7): Kelli Hubly, Kelsey Kaufusi (DRAFT), Meghan Klingenberg, Meaghan Nally, Isabella Obaze (NYR, INTL), Reyna Reyes, Becky Sauerbrunn
Midfielders (6): Sam Coffey, Katie Duong (DRAFT), Olivia Moultrie, Gabby Provenzano, Hina Sugita (INTL), Olivia Wade-Katoa (DRAFT)
Forwards (6): Janine Beckie, Izzy D’Aquila, Payton Linnehan (DRAFT), Christine Sinclair, Sophia Smith, Morgan Weaver
Predicted Preferred Gameday XI
Formation: Mike Norris primarily ran a 4-2-3-1, but with such turnover in the MF, I’m interested to see if he continues. If he sticks with this, I would think he’d have the midfield starters below, I’m just not sure who he’d have drop back more in-line with Coffey. So while I don’t think the formation below is correct, I think the starting XI below is what he’ll go with (at least to start out the season). We also have a glaring hole without re-signing Kuikka. Reyes and Kling started together towards the end of last season and I think this is the way Norris will at least start off with.
-------------------Hogan-------------------
--Klingenberg-----Hubly----Saubrunn---Reyes--
--------------------Coffey--------------------
——Sugita-----Moultrie—---Flemming------
-------------Smith-----------Weaver---------
Likely Top Bench/Subs:
  • Christine Sinclair - MF/F - Still can’t believe this is her last year. Going to cherish the moments while silently sobbing. Sinc made a great super sub when placed there last year and I think she can provide a spark at the end of the matches
  • Janine Beckie - F - Coming off a SEI because of an ACL tear, I think Beckie will be slowly brought back up to speed and can hopefully bring in quite a few goals
  • Payton Linnehan - F - Highly touted draft pick for the Thorns. Another goal scorer who hopefully can transition well to the professional league
  • Isabella Obaze - D - No doubt the Thorns have an older than most backline. Hopefully Obaze can bring more youth to it
Returning Players
The Vets
  • Chrstine Sinclair
  • Becky Saurbrunn
  • Meghan Klingenberg
  • Kelli Hubli
(i.e. the backline)

Something to Prove
  • Olivia Moultrie - I put Moultrie down as something to prove last year and I think she should be here again. It’s looking like she’ll be a full-time starter this year and a potential spot on the Olympic roster. I think this will be a breakout season for her and I am excited to see her get consistent starting minutes to help her grow her game
  • Shelby Hogan - Hogan is most likely taking over the starting GK role from Bixby (at least until Bixby return from maternity leave). Portland has been known as Goalkeeper FC, thanks in part to former GK coach Nadine Angerer. Now that Angerer has departed and Hogan has a true shot as GK 1, the Thorns will need her to step up and play at a very high level
Out for the season-ish
  • Bella Bixby - Maybe not the full season, but Bixby will be on maternity for the foreseeable future
___
2024 PREVIEW
Realistic Best Case Scenario: 1st place and/or Championship
Realistic Worst Case Scenario: 5th/6th and/or earlier round playoff exit
Realistic Most Probable Scenario: 2nd-3rd
The Thorns have lost a few key players, but have also gained tremendous talent. Our most glaring issue is our age in the back. If they can acclimate some of the younger defenders and gel a bit, a first place finish or a championship is very realistic. On the flip side, other teams below in the table have gotten better (we see you NJ/NJ USWNT FC), and acclimating to the NWSL can be hard for new/young players. The Thorns could very easily fall down the standings by not being able to match up well. Realistically, I see the Thorn finishing 2nd or 3rd, with them hitting their stride towards the end of the season. Here’s to a great 2024 season, PT 👏👏 FC 👏👏!!

2024.02.16 04:23 ClassSuch Long, but sharing a wild story that unfolded over a couple days in case it helps anyone else.

The past few days have been a whirlwind. To say that this is the most painful thing I’ve experienced is a massive understatement. My fiancee and I just lost our just-turned-nine-year-old Golden Retriever. In the most sudden and unforeseen manner. In hopes that this offers some kind of catharsis, escape from the pendulum that swings between total numbness and paralyzing pain, or even helps just simply reconcile what we just experienced, I want to detail out the timeline of events.
You see, this timeline starts with a Golden Retriever who recently turned 9. Now, 9 years old isn’t OLD old, but it’s not young. A quick google search tells me that the life expectancy for this breed ranges from 9 years to 12 years. Kinda gut-wrenching to read. I mean, we knew that her day would eventually come, but had no idea just how soon. I highlight her age right off the bat because 1) that’s how long I’ve had her and 2) at 9 years old, you wouldn’t necessarily be shocked to see her gradually slowing down and becoming less active (this being a key symptom that we keyed in on prior to taking her to the vet).
I picked her up at just about 7 weeks old, and having spent nearly a decade with her, grew very aware of not only her typical mannerisms, but also the things to be a little concerned about. Like when she’d pick up a rogue pizza crust off the sidewalk in the West Village, and proceed to battle a case of upset stomach for the next few days. It’d always start with a slight disinterest in meals, a very stark contrast compared to her usual “hey, whats this? can I have some?” presence around anything being consumed. So, that’s what we noticed initially. She lacked interest in her morning meals, oftentimes sniffing the newly placed kibble, and turning away from it. We’d mix in a little apple sauce, same thing. Pick up the apple-sauce-coated kibble and hand feed it to her, and she’d take it, but not energetically. Not ideal, given our track record of what this usually meant. Couple that with the gradual slowing that I mentioned up above, I decided maybe it wouldn’t hurt to take her in for a quick check-up and some bloodwork.
I scheduled an appointment at the closest clinic, which would take 10 minutes to get to. The appointment was in 30. I immediately got a call from them, explaining that the system had malfunctioned, and that slot was actually not available and I’d have to get the next available, which was the following week. Refusing to wait several more days to get our sweet girl some relief, I found the next available at another clinic nearby. We waited a few hours, then made our way over. We arrived, met with the vet staff, and proceeded to go through the bloodwork. We sat in the exam room, trading high fives for treats, getting butt-hop scratches, and sending pics to mom to pass the time. Before too long, the doc comes in and expresses concern. “We’re anemic”. Shit. “I think we should order radiographs,” she says. So we do. Rinse and repeat on the waiting game. A few more treats, a few more high fives, and now a few nervous texts back and forth with mom. The doc comes back again, this time with a vet tech. The vet tech is here to play babysitter while I go back with the doc to see the results of the scan. As we walk through the medical suite, her back to me, my heart begins to race. What if this is bad? I mean, it’s likely not good. She’s said practically nothing to me yet. We get to the room, and she turns toward me as she reaches for the mouse to pull up the images. I look over and notice that tears are running down her face. Fuck. I’m now numb. It’s like the scene in the war movie where you, the audience, are subjected to an explosion and the “ears ringing/shellshock” sound effect is being played. Her lips are moving, tears are still flowing, and I’m hearing nothing. I finally manage to snap out of it, and into this new reality in front of me. It’s a terrifying one. Masses in the abdomen, specifically the spleen, which is the suspected culprit of the anemic blood counts. Internal bleeding and all the associated suffering are also suspected. Next steps? Go to the emergency vet. “I’m so sorry, dad. She’s such a beautiful girl. I cannot imagine. I’m so sorry”. The options are laid out as follows: 1) bring her in for surgery ASAP or 2) start thinking about final arrangements and saying goodbye. Fuck that. She’s too young for that. We fight.
I check out with the cashier, load my baby into the car, and we make the silent half hour drive back home. We’re going to the hospital tonight. I call my fiance and prep her for the evening’s timeline. We come home, gather ourselves after a bout of tears and snuggles on the floor with the pup, and head off for the hospital. We call ahead and let them know we’re on the way. They already know, as they spoke with the clinic not too long ago. They are ready to roll as soon as we get in.
We arrive at the hospital and are immediately greeted by name. We quickly fill out paperwork, they whisk her off, and we wait. We sit there for an hour or so and can’t help but notice how many tissue boxes are positioned throughout the lobby. Not exactly confidence inspiring, but we’re manifesting positivity. We won’t need those. Unfortunately, some folks across the lobby from us are not in the same boat. They’ve just received some bad news, and the elderly man excuses himself to the restrooms where he proceeds to vomit loud enough for all to hear. I don’t blame him. I’m close to doing so, myself.
The doctors finish up the scans and bring us into a private room. Our pup is with us, goofy as can be. For so much turmoil that’s going on in her little belly, there’s surprisingly so much joy and silliness going on in her adorable little face. “It’s insane how good they are at hiding their symptoms,” we’re told. We’re well aware. We started this day thinking about an entirely different kind of outcome.
At any rate, we get to our first true pass/fail, point of no return, situation-room dot on this timeline. Is there internal bleeding? The answer is no. We just got victory #1. We’re told how incredible it is that we caught onto her symptoms this early. “Usually people that come in with dogs with this problem… they’re way too late and we don’t have any other option.” This is told to us a multitude of times, like we should’ve been given a trophy or something because of it.
But let’s not get too far ahead, because here’s trial number 2. Are the masses localized on the spleen, or is she riddled with growths? If the latter, we’re not really a candidate for surgery and we’ll need to make plans to say goodbye. It’s the former. Hell yes. Two up, two down. Let’s go. What’s next now? They keep her overnight, under their watchful eye, get organized in the pre-op stage, and run a few scans of her chest. Their primary concern is a blood cancer by the name of hemangiosarcoma. With the understanding that the growth in the abdominal cavity is all-but-confirmed localized, they’ll want to make sure that other blood-rich organs (like the heart) are in good shape, and mass free. Masses there will rule out surgery and we’d need to make plans to say goodbye. We’re informed that the scans will be done in the next hour or so, and that we’d only receive a call if something wasn’t right. “No news is good news,” we’re told. We thank the team, leave our deposit for the surgery, and make our way home to attempt to sleep… as if we’ll be able to after the day we just had. After all, we started the day with symptoms that we’ve seen before, and ended with a diagnosis and medical situation we’d never thought possible. We lay down for the night, update our loved ones, and attempt to squeeze in a little shuteye.
The phone rings at about 7:00am. It’s the medical team and she’s doing remarkably well. The chest scans are clear. Good lord. That’s 3 times we could’ve been ruled out, and three times we were victorious. She’s a fighter, and an immensely brave girl. We gave her a pep talk, and agreed that this is how it would all go down. She was always a good listener, so we were less surprised, and more delighted to see all of the momentum she was building in order to power through and get back home to us safely. The team informs us that she’s a “go” for surgery and they’d be letting us know when things kick off.
A couple hours into the day, we get the call and she’s heading off for the operation. In order for all of this to go well, they’ll need a couple hours, and they’ll need to confirm that there’s no spread internally. They didn’t see anything on the scan, but there’s always a chance that they find something unexpected. If they do, we’ll get a call in order to discuss. One outcome we may need to discuss is making plans to say goodbye. Is this feeling repetitive? It is, isn’t it? It’s torture. Imagine having this many things that can go wrong. All of your emotions in limbo, hoping to everything that’s holy that you don’t get a phone call. Then the phone rings an hour into surgery. Fuck. It’s a spam caller. Phew! Never been so thankful.
Two and a half hours pass. We were told it would be two to three. They should be wrapped up by now, no? Or at least close? I call and get a hold of one of the vet techs. She’s in post-op. The surgery went off without a hitch. No internal spread. This is now victory #4. She’s unstoppable. We’ve never been so relieved. During all this time under the knife, we had a visit from my mom, who dropped off a new, plush dog bed for her to recover in, and some assorted post-surgery goodies to help her be comfortable and safe. She gets to celebrate the good news with us. Everyone’s on cloud nine.
Now it’s time for recovery. She’s kept through the evening and into the next day. This is now Saturday morning and we receive our morning update from the medical team. She’s a champ. She’s crushing recovery. She’s been hooked up to monitors for the past day and a half, and the only time she’s ever shown an elevated heart rate coincides when she needs a potty break and wants out of the kennel to relieve herself. Totally understandable, also adorable. She notched victory #5 in the fact that the cardiac telemetry in the post-op phase showed no sign of arrhythmia, a side effect of this surgery that they were concerned about. She’s making a playoff run at this point. Setting them up, knocking them down. We are filled with pride. Did I mention she’s a good listener?
They’re giving her the “all clear” to come home. We politely request that she stays a few more hours in order to make absolutely sure that’s the case. Deal. We’ll come get her in the evening. We spend the next little bit doing what we thought anyone would do in our position. Our friends have highlighted this as an example of how much love and care we showed for her, as it’s a little ridiculous. We dismantle the bed frame on our king sized mattress, and lay it on the floor. We want to make sure she can easily get in and out of bed with us, where she always loved to be, snuggled between the two of us. She’ll have a seam running the length of her abdomen, not unlike how the panels of a football are stitched together, and ripping that open is a major concern. Easy solution in our heads was to lower the bed to where she could easily come on in whenever she pleased. I also set up some security cameras around in places where she’ll be recovering, so that we can always have an eye on her. And I prep a batch of the famous bland diet of chicken and rice, a surefire way to keep her nourished (gently) and on the path to recovery.
The time has now come to go get our baby. We head in, grab a private room, and are greeted by a super droopy and drugged up pup. She’s pathetic, but it’s the most beautiful sight to see. She’s alive and well, wagging her tail, licking mom’s face (doesn’t lick dad’s. like, ever.), snuggling up to dad, and overall just filling our hearts to the brim with joy. We get our discharge docs, tons of pills and a timetable of delivery, and set off on my most cautious drive home that I may have ever had. I very likely could have given any of your grandparents road rage.
We get home and are filled with joy. She’s very aware that she’s made it back to her favorite place, with her favorite people. The tail is going nonstop. She walks in the front door and peeks around. She notices the mattress is on the floor and she immediately make a b-line for it, gently climbs in, plops down, and smiling from ear to ear, wags her tail back and forth as an anxious dad jumps in next to her and snuggles her to keep her from rolling around and potentially hurting herself. This is bliss. All of our fears feel like a distant memory. This should honestly be a drug. It’s a great feeling.
We proceed through the evening with some snuggles, a lot of love, a little washcloth bath to freshen her up, and a little bit of food for her. She actually came over and begged for some leftovers that we were putting away and our hearts melted. We fed her some chicken and rice, took her for “peepees and sleepies”, her nighttime potty break, and came back up to bed. More of that drug-like feeling washed over us, as we looked at each other from opposite ends of the bed, blissfully separated by our goofy golden girl, our fiercely brave and strong girl. We did it. We overcame all the odds and we were reunited at last. With smiles on all of our faces, and bodies snuggled up together, we drifted off to sleep.
Up until now, it’s been a roller coaster. We’ve had moments of despair, and moments of delight. I wish I could say the same for what’s about to happen.
4:10am - I’m awaken by “babe? babe? babe?!” and the sound of our dog’s breathing, a tad louder and more strained than I’m comfortable with. It’s a touch frightening, and I slide down to the end of the bed to check on her. It’s not great. She’s kind of drooling, mouth is a little colder than I would’ve expected, and her gums are nearly gray. Fuck.
4:13am - We call the hospital, give them the status, and are told to head their way immediately.
4:18am - we’re changed out of pjs and the dog bed is loaded into the car. We’re attempting to get her attention. It’s not happening. Something is seriously wrong. Maybe she’s disoriented from the pain pills? I mean, she’s on codeine. That’s strong shit, right? Her unresponsiveness triggers an adrenaline dump in me, and I scoop her out of bed, run her down the hall, through two push-bar doors to the parking garage, and out to the car. I hear what sounds like running water. I feel warmth in my forearm. I look back and find a trail of urine from where I’ve run to the car with her. Fuck. This is not happening. As I load her into the car, I notice her eyes are, for lack of a better descriptor, frightening. The image is burned in memory as I write this just under 48 hours later. For both of us.
4:21am - I call the hospital. She’s in the back, and we’re en route. This should be a 20 minute drive.
4:31am - in the 10 minutes that we’ve been in the car, I’ve shaved nearly 50% of the travel time off. We’re almost there. Could’ve been the two red lights that I (very well calculated, and very cautiously) ran, or the fact that I hit 75 in a 35 kinds of speed on the way over, treating the curves of this suburban setting like the curves at Monza. Chasing the apex of every curve, planting the accelerator into every straight, and carefully scanning the horizon and surroundings for any risk. I thought for a moment about police. I didn’t really have a plan. Thinking back, I probably would have threw on the hazards and continued. However dumb that decision may have been, they may have had some sympathy when I eventually came to a stop at the emergency vet. At any rate, I call the hospital. “We’re two minutes out. Bring the gurney”. I’m informed the doctors are out front, awaiting our arrival. This is good because the entire time we’re on the way, I’m asking for updates from the back seat and getting “it’s not good”, which I know, but I am hoping by some sort of miracle, changes the next time I ask.
4:33am - I pull in, come to a stop, flip the trunk open, and we shift her from the cargo area to the gurney, on her dog bed, in a shockingly effortless and efficient manner. “CPR or DNR?” they ask. “CPR” we unanimously respond. The doctors haul ass into the building, fiancee in tow. She’s holding the door as a receptionist runs over with a CPR release. It’s signed, and they’re off. The whole thing happens in the kind of speed in which a NASCAR pit crew swaps out a set of tires and refuels. From start to finish, she’s out of the car, in the hospital, wheeled back to the emergency room, and under care in what feels like 20-30 seconds. It was unreal. It was also all hand on deck, as we waited in the lobby by ourselves.
Eleven painstaking minutes go by. “I hear yelling” my fiance says. I do too, but I play it off as if I hadn’t. I don’t know. It makes me feel like maybe I won’t dissolve into a pool of tears if I don’t let the little things get to me. If I don’t acknowledge, maybe it’s not actually happening. That makes sense, right?
Finally, the doctor comes out and gives us the news that we feared. “___ is currently not alive…” the rest of the sentence might as well have been in a foreign language, because the world went numb. We’re invited back, but not before she yells back to the team that we’re coming. So thankful for that. I don’t need to watch failed resuscitation on the companion I’ve shared a third of my life with. We make our way back, and she’s got the faintest heartbeat. We’re surrounded by half a dozen folks, from all walks of life, and extraordinary academic and medical backgrounds, all in tears. All who tried desperately to bring her back into our world. Several of which who watched her walk out just a few hours prior.
We chat briefly with the doctor who collected us from the lobby, discuss how to proceed, and decide that we’ll wait with her until the last beat from her beautiful, love-filled heart occurs. It doesn’t take long before she’s clinically declared. However, the events leading up to that, and all the signs we saw between waking up and getting into the car, places the time of her passing in either 1) our bed, with us OR 2) in my arms, as I was rushing her to the car. Either of those are far more deserved than the sterile, harshly lit emergency room.
The unofficial cause is thought to be a blood clot that dislodged and found its way into her lungs, a pulmonary thromboembolism. After all the pass/fail, point of no return, situation-room dots on this timeline, and all the victories we enjoyed together against the odds (FIVE, in total), our baby succumbed to a fortunately-not-common, but generally-well-known, risk of any surgical procedure. From what I’ve been able to gather, it was quick, and she hardly suffered.
We are destroyed. There’s a couple things here: Exhaustion - several days of roller-coaster emotions around the whole thing, lots of missed sleep, lots of anxiety and nerves Disbelief - from the appointment with the x-rays, to us saying goodbye, was a span of 86 hours. How did this happen? Why did this happen? She was still “young”. She’s supposed to be in our wedding in 3 months. She’s supposed to be a big sister someday soon, as we want to start on a family shortly after the wedding. Trauma - the events that we watched unfold in her final moments were deeply traumatic, and the sights, sounds, and smells are etched in memory. They are fading, and our support network has been immensely helpful in letting us work through our grief. Guilt - we caused this to happen by having her operated on, but then again, this was her only chance at living. Not operating meant more discomfort, pain, and an eventual rupture that would have resulted in a far more miserable end for her. So should we not feel guilt? How could we not? She didn’t choose this. But again, it’s either taking this risk and hoping it goes well (why would it not? The risk is so low comparatively. everything has risk. this is so much more favorable) or letting her suffer. Emptiness - she made our lives so whole. She touched the lives of so many of our friends. We were rarely thought of as just a couple, but more as a family. She was the child-equivalent. We had our routines, our silly conversations with her, and through her to each other. The silence in the past 36 hours has been eerie, and I suppose it’ll eventually become less uncomfortable, but is incredibly depressing right now.
Update to this a week and a half after writing. Biopsy came back - hemangiosarcoma. Cell division rate was apparently outrageously high, signifying that it had come on rather quickly. That also meant it would continue at a rather fast pace. I was informed that it was “end stage” and the time she would have had left would have been really short and filled with surgery recovery and suffering. It’s just not fair.
We love you, bub. Always will. Hope you're chasing squirrels and enjoying all the peanut butter you can get your paws on.

THE ZITS - “SICK OF YOU” b/w “BEAT YOUR FACE” (1981) - KBD classic, this was a stock copy sold a few years back. I played it a few times, but it still looks immaculate. $100
