tomas (franco) on pinoy big brother back in 2015
i never watched a pbb episode in my life but someone mentioned on this reddit that he was on this show crushing on a 13 year old girl named ylona when he was 17. mind you, bailey, who is the boy tomas is trying to make jealous is 13 as well. this clip ylona attempts to kiss him and tomas tried to kiss her and nobody wanted to stop that? who knows what happened behind the scenes. no excuse for a 17 year old boy to be like that around a 13 year old and make her try to kiss him. disgusting people hid this shit and excused it. no one questioned this when it was airing???

2024.02.11 11:17 LastWeekInCollapse Last Week in Collapse: February 4-10, 2024

Antarctica warms, H5N1 spreads, conflict grows, and our crises continue converging…
Last Week in Collapse: February 4-10, 2024
This is Last Week in Collapse, a weekly newsletter compiling some of the most important, timely, useful, soul-crushing, ironic, amazing, or otherwise must-see/can’t-look-away moments in Collapse.
This is the 111th newsletter. You can find the January 28-February 3 edition here if you missed it last week. You can also receive these posts (with images) every Sunday by email with Substack.
——————————
The AMOC is at its weakest point in over 1,000 years, and scientists are afraid the tipping point may be closer than expected. A study in Science Advances claims “no realistic adaptation measures can deal with such rapid temperature changes under an AMOC collapse” and that we are trending towards a dangerous climatic future. However, if I understood this study correctly, it suggests that we have at least 25 years until the AMOC tipping point is finally crossed, and probably 75+ years until the feedback loop becomes dire. But a Collapse of the AMOC could mean a 5-15 °C drop in temperatures in northwest Europe and the disruption of the global climate as we know it.
A recalculation of global temperature increases since pre-industrial times suggests that we are actually already 1.7 °C above our baseline. The Nature Climate Change study measured a certain species of sea sponge, and determined that the oceans began warming in the 1860s. Earth has just finished its first consecutive 12 months of average temperatures hotter than 1.5 °C.
Exxon Mobil will search for oil off the coast of Guyana, in the region contested by Venezuela, despite (or because of?) rising regional tensions and Venezuelan soldiers gathering near the border. An oil ship ran aground near Tobago, spilling oil across 15 km of the island’s coastline. Italian farmers are bracing for Drought.
Iceland’s ongoing volcanic eruption has opened a new fissure and damaged water pipes, leading to a state of emergency being declared in several settlements. Some researchers believe Iceland is entering a new volcanic era, and that these eruptions could last years—potentially even centuries.
Chilean wildfires continue blazing, causing their President to label these the worst disaster to face Chile in 14 years. 15,000+ homes have been damaged and 131+ people killed. Scientists are saying that we should designate a Category 6 Hurricane rating for super-strong storms. Category 5 storms begin with winds of 157 mph (252 kph) but do not have a cap. In the last 12 years, scientists have measured six storms exceeding 193 mph (309 kph).
A Nature Water study found that warmer conditions in the United States actually made the soil more moist during summer. One scientist concluded “it's virtually impossible to predict soil moisture in the coming decades.” A study of microplastics in soil is sounding the alarm about the damage to the ecosystem caused through the breakdown of microplastics and how they will chemically impact soil health.
Analysis of Antarctic sea ice predicts that record lows seen in 2023 will not be broken this season, although the quantity will remain low. Yet another study says that part of the Wilkes Subglacial Basin in Antarctica—at 1,400 km long and 400 km wide, the Basin is 90% the size of Greenland—is closer to runaway melting. It contains enough ice to raise sea levels 10 feet (3 meters) when totally melted. {Some sources claim the Basin is the size of California but Wikipedia’s listen dimensions are much closer to Greenland’s size.}
In the U.S., 2024 is a year of big climate lawsuits, though analysts aren’t sure how they will all be decided. Monarch butterfly populations in Mexico fell by 59% over the last 12 months. A landslide in Georgia killed 4; a landslide in the Philippines killed 7.
Record temperatures across Africa, too many to individually name. Bolivia set a new February record, as did several Pacific island nations. South Africa and Dar Es Salaam set new night temperatures as well. The sea surface temperature is still setting new records, and a number of Caribbean nations set new records for February too.
This great flow chart grappling with climate change and Collapse may be worth your time. The new Secretary-General of the WMO said global warming is accelerating.
——————————
Dengue fever cases quadrupled in Brazil since last year, killing 40+ and forcing Brazil to conduct a mass vaccination campaign. Ecuador decriminalized euthanasia. The Fentanyl emergency is causing a continual stream of deaths on both sides of the U.S./Mexico border.
The complex emergency in Sudan (pop: 48M) is still becoming more complex—and more of an emergency. Cholera, measles, malaria, and hunger are rising, the internet was shut down in some places, and access to healthcare and clean water has become severely limited. The number of displaced has risen to 7.9M according to most estimates—by one count, almost 11M. A ship capsized off the coast of Tunisia, carrying at least 40 Sudanese people. China is cozying up to the Taliban with the hopes of securing some of Afghanistan’s minerals.
An experiment with nuclear fusion—a theoretically limitless & clean potential future power source–has come closer than ever before, according to a UK science institution. More research is shedding light on COVID and brain damage. Research into Long COVID is still being done—will we ever unlock a cure for this debilitating condition?
Ghana’s population has almost tripled in the last 30 years, resulting in haphazard development poisoning rivers and damaging wetlands. In the United States, 10% of premature births are linked to plastics](https://phys.org/news/2024-02-premature-births-linked-plastic-chemicals.html). We are beginning the “enshittification” of everything.
Although on paper the American economy may look strong, homelessness is at record levels—and that’s just the homelessness that we can quantify. And the price of servicing U.S. debt is ticking up. Germany is seeing a drop in commercial real estate, while China’s mammoth real estate market is trembling.
H5N1—bird flu—has infected another human in Cambodia, and spread to birds in Laos. Birds in Massachusets and in the capital of Niger have also been reported to have the disease. Chickens in Japan and in Czechia were culled over fears of spreading H5N1, and dead geese in Ontario tested positive for avian flu as well.
——————————
The Five Eyes Network—a security partnership between the UK, U.S., Canada, New Zealand, and Australia—is warning about Volt Typhoon, a mysterious cyber-sabotage state network of Chinese hackers who have allegedly been probing, hacking, laying digital mines, and exploring IT vulnerabilities in mostly American infrastructure. The U.S. is less than 9 months away from its consequential election, and the Supreme Court appears unwilling to support blocking Trump’s ballot access over his actions on & before January 6th.
Protestors clashed with police in Dakar over Senegal’s President’s decision to postpone an election that was just three weeks away. A constitutional crisis is coming. In Europe, farmers protests continue across the continent. In the DRC, M23 gang soldiers advance on Goma, sparking fear among locals. AI simulations of WWIII have nuclear weapons deployed in a tense arms-race. 8 Chinese spy balloons were spotted over Taiwan last week, between 15,000-38,000 feet (4.5-11.5 km) in the air.
Mauretania (pop: 5M) is partnering with the EU to slow the flow of migrants moving north. Most analysts predict migration to Europe will hit new highs in 2024. The Council of Europe is again criticizing the UK’s plan to send asylum-seekers/migrants to Rwanda for processing.
Islamic bombings killed 42+ on the even of Pakistan’s new elections. Although results are still being calculated, the political party of jailed ex-PM Imran Khan surged in the count, a shock turnout in a tense political moment. Nevertheless, a negotiated political settlement is likely.
Hangry protestors in Haiti demanded that their PM resign. Haiti remains deadlocked in a state of gang warfare, supply shortage, and deteriorating living conditions. In Türkiye, people continue struggling to live in the ruins caused by an earthquake one year ago. In the U.S., Trump is rising in the polls, despite (or because of?) statements seeming to encourage Russian aggression and with rhetoric against the EPA .
Myanmar’s ruling junta is making conscription mandatory for all men & women of a certain age. Recruits would spend 2-5 years in the military. A study of British crime determined that young men in the UK are at high risk of criminal exploitation, os, as the article also calls it, “modern slavery.” Security forces in Colombia dispersed a protest of about 20,000.
The U.S. announced it would not support an Israeli offensive in Rafah, south Gaza, as it is currently imagined. Nevertheless, Israel is bombarding parts of Rafah in advance of a ground invasion. This part of Gaza, swollen with an influx of refugees camping in the February desert, has been called “the world's biggest displacement camp.” Netanyahu rejected Hamas’ ceasefire proposal, aiming for “total victory” later this year. Tensions still hold firm at the Israel/Lebanon border, where some observers fear a second front. Others worry about Houthi forces sabotaging undersea cables, although Houthis probably currently lack the capability to do so; meanwhile, Red Sea shipping attacks are escalating. Israel also shot missiles into Syria, targeting an air base, and some are concerned that Iraq could be drawn into the War over American & Iranian strikes on its territory.
President Zelenskyy relieved his top general, Valerii Zaluzhnyi, with another commander known for risk-taking and his willingness to sacrifice soldiers for military objectives. It is the biggest shake-up in Ukraine’s War effort since the full-scale invasion began nearly two years ago, and a move that leaves many Ukrainians conflicted. Meanwhile, Russia released a {dis}information bomb in the form of a long interview with a controversial American media personality.
Russian strikes on Kharkiv blasted an oil depot, killing 7. Nepali mercenaries fighting in Ukraine want to leave—but many are wounded or captured, or otherwise trapped near the front lines. Ammunition is in short supply. This grisly before-and-after article about Mariupol illustrates how quickly, and totally, a thriving city can Collapse in War.
North Korea’s dictator is again threatening to destroy South Korea if provoked. Some analysts believe Kim Jong-Un is posturing more now because North Korean workers slaves are growing restless in China and at home. Although most observers do not believe that North Korea is preparing for a War, the situation on the peninsula stands, to some, as the most volatile since the 1950s.

Things to watch next week include:
↠ Next week is going to get hot in Europe, if this climate projection is to be believed.
Select comments/threads from the subreddit last week suggest:
-Results from the Collapse community survey are in; you may have already read the stickied post. Too bad only 1,223 people participated, out of 503,000 current subscribers. That’s 0.25% of the total subscribed collapseniks. Read the full data here.
-Poland may be readying itself for War, is this observation by u/neuromeat is accurate. Experts are watching for “unplanned military activities” and the price of everything has risen over the last year. It has also been a warm winter.
Got any feedback, upvotes, questions, comments, complaints, Super Bowl predictions, endorsements, escape plans, etc.? 2024.01.31 04:14 lazerbem Respect Flint Abrahams (Cabela's Dangerous Hunts 2009)

Flint Abrahams is a globetrotting big game hunter, determined to make a name for himself after his mentor Sergei was killed by a brown bear before his eyes. Whether he’s hunting down maneaters, tranquilizing endangered animals for relocation, rescuing people from plane crashes, or just hunting for sport, Flint took on only the deadliest of hunts. Things would come full circle when he returned to Russia, and finally avenged Sergei’s death by killing the bear from years past.

2023.06.29 15:31 MantisAwakening The government can still sweep this under the rug. They’re now positioned to do so even more effectively than before.

Grusch has dropped some major bombshells (at least for the general public—for “UAP Enjoyers” it’s mostly confirmation). A big portion of that is the accusation that physical UAP assets are under the control of private corporations like Lockheed Martin, very effectively hidden away from the public, the Congress, and even the President.
Hark back to 1969 when Project Blue Book came out after the public’s attention was intentionally raised and focused on the subject of UFOs. The PBB determination: “swamp gas.” It remains a joke to this day. The Condon Report went on to tell scientists there was no value in studying UFOs, largely based on the PBB findings.
Fast forward to 1994. The Air Force announces that, due to public interest, they’re going to investigate Roswell and figure it out once and for all. The result? “It was a high-altitude weather balloon, part of PROJECT MOGUL.” Never mind that the purported dates didn’t even line up, the next generation had their explanation: weather balloons.
Now thanks to accusations from multiple whistleblowers we have Lockheed Martin being asked questions, and they’re referring people to AARO. Many insiders, including Grusch, have voiced concerns that AARO is a sham and is once again hiding the truth. AARO is well-positioned to state “We called in the whistleblowers, tracked down the programs, and found out that what people are seeing is heavily-classified advanced human technology that is being tested. Nothing to do with aliens. Case closed.” And then they buy themselves another generation worth of time.

Saran penyimpanan makanan berdasarkan pedoman ritel pangan BPOM:
Bahan Cara simpan Suhu
Keterangan kedaluarsa menurut label pangan
Bagian Kedelapan
Keterangan Kedaluwarsa
Pasal 34
”Baik digunakan sebelum, lihat bagian bawah kaleng”ataub. ”Baik digunakan sebelum, lihat pada tutup botol”.

Saran penyimpanan pangan menurut pedoman ritel pangan:

7.3.2 Saran Penyimpanan Pangan
(1) Daging Unggas

2023.05.03 07:59 Appropriate_Pop1813 Hunting for credit cards with the highest CB!

Update: I have decided and currently am actively using these CCs:
- Maybank Islamic Ikhwan American Express Platinum Card-i (8% CB on online AMEX purchases)
- Maybank Islamic Petronas Ikhwan Visa Platinum Card-i (Max 8% CB for refueling in Petronas stations)
- Maybank Shopee Visa Platinum Credit Card (Max 4% CB on Shopee purchases)
- And I will probably be adding PBB Islamic Wau 4% soon as well (thanks to u/gorglybear)

Hello geng. I’ve been doing extensive research to look for a few credit cards that can give me the best savings for my typical monthly spendings (and yes, I wanna use multiple credit cards for the highest savings!). I would like to get some input from you guys to help fill in some blanks and for some feedbacks.
Here’s my typical monthly spending for products/services and the best CCs I found for them so far:
CB = Cashback
MC = Mastercard
No. Spending Category Amount CB % CB $ Credit Card
1. Grocery Physical RM 400 4% RM 16 Maybank Shopee Visa Platinum Credit Card
2. Fuel Physical RM 100 8% RM 8 Maybank Islamic Petronas Ikhwan Visa Gold Card-i
3. TNB bill Online - AMEX/VISA/MC RM 85 8% RM 6.80 Maybank Islamic Ikhwan American Express Platinum Card-i
4. Google Service Online - AMEX/VISA/MC RM 27 8% RM 2.16 Maybank Islamic Ikhwan American Express Platinum Card-i
5. Phone top up Online - AMEX/VISA/MC RM 30 8% RM 2.40 Maybank Islamic Ikhwan American Express Platinum Card-i
6. Shopee Spend Online - AMEX/VISA/MC RM 100 8% RM 8 Maybank Islamic Ikhwan American Express Platinum Card-i
7. PTPTN loan Online - AMEX/VISA/MC RM 124.58 8% RM 9.97 Maybank Islamic Ikhwan American Express Platinum Card-i
8. Water bill Online - FPX RM 25 n/a n/a n/a
9. Insurance Online - VISA/MC RM 210 ? ? ?
10. Unifi Online - VISA/MC RM 135 ? ? ?
Total RM 1236.58 RM 53.33
Total monthly spending: RM 1236.58
Total CCs: 3
Total Annual SST charges: RM 25 x 3 = RM 75
Effective savings yearly: RM 639.96 - RM 75 = RM 564.96
Effective savings monthly: RM 47.08
For Item 1 - 7, I think I have the CB % numbers right based on the extent of my research for the respective credit cards, but please feel free to poke holes. I also intend to double-confirm this with the bank(s) after I gather some input from you guys, so that I’ll be better equipped and have all the right questions to ask the bank.
My criteria for the credit cards were:
Annual fee: Whatever it may be. The question is, with the fee included, can the card(s) help me get the highest savings?
Monthly income requirement: ≤ RM 4000/mth
CB type: It has to be a simple monetary cash back, I can at least accept Shopee Coin CB since Shopee spending is pretty typical for me, hence I will fully utilize those coins.
CB Cap: Whatever it may be. After factoring in the cap, can the card(s) help me get the highest savings?
Grocery spending: The CB effect can't be for big brand stores only, as my place of residence all got no name brand pasaraya only.

Breakdown:-
Item 1: Grocery
CC: Maybank Shopee Visa Platinum Credit Card
I got the 4% CB figure from the fact that you get 4x Shopee coins on contactless spending on special days (28th of every month, CNY, Raya, 9.9,11.11,12.12). Here’s how I picture it playing out. I go to any pasaraya and do a contactless spend of RM 400.00 for groceries on every 28th, and I will effectively save 4%, as 1 Shopee coin = RM 0.01.
The card has no annual fee and requires RM2,000/month income to apply.
Item 2: Fuel
CC: Maybank Islamic Petronas Ikhwan Visa Gold Card-i
Pretty self explanatory. In fact, you can effectively get >8% savings if we factor in the collected Mesra points. But let’s keep it simple with the 8% for now.
No annual fee. RM 30,000 minimum annual income.
Item 3 - 7: TNB Bill, Google Service, Mobile phone top up, Shopee spend, PTPTN loan
CC: Maybank Islamic Ikhwan American Express Platinum Card-i
All of these transactions accept AMEX, also this card technically can beat the Maybank Shopee card with the 8% CB, which sounds absurd to me. I’m not 100% sure if these CBs come with hidden caveats that were not apparent in the product brochure, please correct me if I’m wrong.
I will still need to particularly confirm with the bank if the TNB bill and PTPTN loan can get the max cash back effect or not.
No annual fee. RM 40,000 minimum annual income.
Item 8: Water bill
CC: None?
The Air Selangor web portal that I use to pay water bill only offers FPX payment feature, so I can’t use cards 🙁
I actually wondered, with the Shopee CC’s contactless payment, can I get 4% CB if I go to a post office branch and pay my utilities by swiping my cards there? I will need to confirm this with the bank, unless if you guys already know the answer for this.
I don’t really bother about the CB for this spending, as it is very low, but I think someone out there can still benefit from this info.
Item 9, 10: Insurance, Unifi
CC: ?
This is where I’m stuck right now, it got pretty overwhelming for me to find out CCs that offer the best CB for VISA/Mastercard online spending based on my scenario. I would like to ask you guys if you know of any CCs best suited for this.
I would love to hear your thoughts, and certainly open to feedbacks 🙏

2023.03.13 22:46 MirkWorks Pan and the Nightmare by James Hillman (continuation)

Pan, Goat-God of Nature
"Instinct"
Pan and Masturbation

Pan's Nymphs
By placing instinct and image on the same continuum, Jung offered a new entry to Pan’s world. Rational, moral, and willful attempts to manage instinctual compulsions can only suppress instinct, since these attempts arise from an essentially different component of the psyche. Likes connect with likes; likes cure likes. Mythical images depict instinct; instincts enact mythical patterns. (Vico thought myths were therapeutic.) Logically and practically, Pan’s urges are best approached via his companionate mythical images: his nymphs.
In this respect myth can be compared with alchemy. In alchemy the transformation of compulsive sulfur requires a substance equal to it (mainly salt, but also and by means of mercury, an evasive psychic substance that is the true instrument of change). The operator’s mind and will play a role subsidiary to the effects of one substance upon another. So, too, in the changes represented by myth, a mythologeme equal to Pan is required.
Before we go further, I must qualify the idea of change in myth by hastening to add that we are not engaged in moral instruction. There is nothing “wrong” with Pan, with instinct, compulsion, and the like. Myths describe fundamental subjective processes in which changes are embedded. It is our mistake to read these changes as moral improvements, as progresses of any sort. Thus to speak of the “cure” of compulsion is, on the one hand, a therapeutic notion implying betterment; but, on the other hand, “cure” means the change from one form of affliction into another. Let us keep distinct the core notion of change from its interpretative coatings: some sugary as “growth” and “progress,” some more bitter as “loss” and “decay.” If an axiom of psychic change is like cures like, we can hardly bring about change on one level by doing things on another. Of course, sulfur and salt are opposites, and cure comes, as Heraclitus would have enjoyed remarking, through the opposites. But the opposites are within the same class and at the same level. Thus a change of compulsion is not a matter of consciousness working on the unconscious, for these are opposites of two different classes, similar to will working on imagination, super-ego working on id, or mind working on body. Mind may work on mind, body on body; and so to change events of an imaginal nature, we shall be obliged to stay within an imaginal field.
Furthermore, for change to take place at an instinctual level, the process must be natural; it must be as the alchemists said: nature both loving and enjoying nature and at the same time nature changing nature. The opposites must be already sames, and there must be an affinity between them. In alchemy, sol loves luna, and fire and water embrace. In mythology, Pan wants nymphs. We have seen that Pan divides between mountaintop and grotto, between noise and music, between hairy thighs and spiritual horns, between headlong panic and headstrong rape. Another instance, and one more imaginative and appealing, is Pan and his partners, the nymphs. For a god and his partner describe the two main components of an archetypal complex. And if the noblest truth of psychological thinking (Jung) as well as of mythical and mystical philosophy is the identity of the opposites, than not only are the twin nuclei within Pan's nature one and the same, but also Pan and the nymphs are necessarily entailed because they too are one and the same. "The nymphs who accompany Pan are not his subordinates ... they remain just as divine as he is," writes Philippe Borgeaud.
Roscher's etymological and "natural" explanation of nymphs takes them as personifications of the wisps and clouds of mist clinging to valleys, mountain sides and water sources, veiling the waters and dancing over them. And indeed Homer says that is where the nymphs live. In the same volume, Bloch refuses Roscher's hypothesis by saying that the word in Greek mythology means nothing else than "mature maiden" or "miss," corning from swelling as does a bud, and rather like our "nubile," but not "nebulous." W.F. Otto, in his chapter on the nymphs, agrees that the word means girl or bride, but connects them mythically first of all with Artemis and the Greek feeling of Aidos***,*** shame, a modest bashfulness, a quiet respectful awe within nature and toward nature. He describes this feeling as the opposite pole to the overwhelming convulsiveness of Pan (god of epilepsy). The nymphs belong to the same inscape of our interior nature as does Pan.
Who are these nymphs of myth, these loves of Pan? First of all, many had no names; these "impersons" bespeak on the level of the drive-object the impersonality of the drive. The same invisible unspecific power instigates Pan's rapes as objectifies them in the unknown obscure nymph. Of those named, there is Syrinx, a water maiden who, fleeing his sexual assault, transformed into a reed from which Pan made his pipes. Although perhaps the most famous of all his loves, Syrinx is given secondary attention by scholars because the tale is said to be a late mythologizing explanation for Pan's pipes. Before considering the tale of Syrinx and its dismissal by scholarship, let us allow the nymphs to pass in review.
Pitys, a nymph of the pine tree, was another. Pan often wears a pine wreath or a chaplet made of fir, and the pine cone occurs often together with Dionysus, its pointed shape and its many seeds allowing it to be called that favorite interpretative euphemism of Victorian Classicists, a "fertility symbol."
But here Pitys, the pine, is feminine, and reflects Dionysus in another way, for the mixture of pine and wine in retsina expresses a coniunctio. D.H. Lawrence amplified Pitys in his own fashion, experiencing Pan in and through the pine, its "bristling," pungent roughness. For Lawrence the pine is less the comforting shade on a hill slope of Roscher's fantasy evoking the wood-nymph of bucolic Greece, than the aggressive maleness of the Red Indian in Lawrence's work "Pan in America." The pine tree as Pan, as male, restates the Orphic thesis that the opposites are identical, Pan and the nymphs are one. There are, for instance, statues of female Pans and there are pictures and reliefs where Pan appears together with a hermaphrodite.

A third of Pan's loves was Echo, whom we have met in Apuleius's tale of Eros and Psyche. Here, too, Pan was frustrated, for Echo had no body, no substantial existence of her own. In relationship with Pan she was altogether he himself resumed upon himself, a repercussion of nature reflecting itself. (In the case of Narcissus, whom Echo loved, it is Narcissus who refuses her for the allure of his own reflection.)
Reflection seems the aim as we proceed further through the list of Pan's loves. For another was Eupheme, wet nurse to the Muses. She and Pan had a boy together, named Crotus, who, as the Muses' half-brother, used to play with them. Eupheme's name means "spoken fair," "good repute," "religious silence." From that root we have "euphemism," which means the propitious use of words.
Harsh or unlucky events can be modified if given a better name. The right use of euphemism nourishes that Muses. It lies at the source of the transformation of nature into art. Absurd or crude misfortunes of nature may be shaped by imagination. As Pan can turn rout and riot into dance, clamor into music, so his nightmare force seeks better (euphemistic) expression that gives his harshness and crudity a further significance, a more poetic and religious value. The relation of Pan with Eupheme and the Muses also implies that within all the arts there lies, covered over, the primal evocative power of Pan.
Finally, the one who fully reveals Pan's intention is Selene, goddess of the moon. (Her entire configuration and her son Musaeus and his connections with Orpheus and with the Eleusinian Mysteries are implicated by the Pan-Selene story, but to take them up would require a separate monograph on Selene, which Roscher, by the way, also accomplished.) However, we must note these characteristics of Selene: her unsurpassed beauty, her eye that saw all things happening below; her rule of menstruation, the orderly rhythm of female instinct; her gift of dew, the cooling moisture; her relation with epilepsy and healing; the veil that kept her partly hidden, indirect; the torch she carried and the light-bestowing diadem she wore; the obscure cave from which she rose and in which she set.
For his conquest of the moon, it is said that Pan had to disguise his black and hairy parts with white fleece. This is the language of alchemy, corresponding to the movement from nigredo to the albedo of lunar consciousness. What is resistant to light, obscure and driven, suffering nature in ignorance, turns white and reflective, able to see what is going on in the night. The white fleece does not halt Pan in the course of his conquest. The whitening is not an askesis of the goat. It is not that Pan now knows and do does not act out, but the action, by becoming white, turns reflective and thus the connection with Selene (selas = light, like that of a torch shining in the night) has been made possible. Like cures like: Pan, by becoming like Selene is already connected with her.
Nor does this tale say that Selene's lunar consciousness reflected Pan and thus deflected him. To the contrary, the seduction takes place. Lunar consciousness can be swept away by a Pan; it can be convulsed and can panic, faint, and collapse. The lunar state is particularly vulnerable to Pan, just as Pan is particularly attracted to it. This we have already seen above in regard to rape. Here, it is reaffirmed, for Pan makes his most vivid impression as Ephialtes in dreams which traditionally belong to the Moon. And there in nightmares his lunatic nature appears especially. Pan was one of the gods directly associated with lunacy, as the nymphs were a cause of madness (nympholeptoi).
We are now in a position to return to Syrinx. Though this tale may be a late invention, a mere consciously literary conceit, its pattern is authenticated by its similarity with the other tales. It is as if the mythologist's invention was performed by the archetype of Pan and the nymph to tell us in one more version the relationship between Pan, frustration and reflection. Because a tale is late does not mean it has lesser psychological insight or mythical value. Archetypal primordiality must not be confused with historical antiquity. In the Syrinx tale Pan pursues the possibility of reflection, which, by ever-receding, transforms into its instrument. The music of the Syrinx is the self-consciousness that inhibits and transforms the compulsion. Instead of rape on the riverbank, there is plaintive piping, song, and dance. The compulsion is not sublimated, however, but expressed in and through another image, for song and dance are also instinctual. Through the syrinx the noise Pan is fond of becomes music, the tumult, a measured step; patterns elaborate; there is space, distance and air, like the soughing of the wind in the pine. Like Echo, who provides the feminine receptivity of the ear and of recalling, the music made through Pan's pipes offers a musing fantasy that inhibits compulsion. Pan's sexual compulsion seems wholly directed towards the end of reflection. Remember: Pan is not a father god, his offspring being mythologically insignificant. His generative is of another sort.
These tales tell us that instinctual nature itself desires figures and fantasies to make it aware of itself. No new principle is introduced, no corrective of compulsion from above or outside the configuration of Pan himself. He seeks an intangible other pole - a mere reed, a sound, an echo, the pale light, the muse's nurse - a helpful awareness through the dark concretistic sexuality and panic. Pan tells us that the strongest longing of nature "in here" (and maybe "out there" as well) is towards union with soul in awareness, an idea we have already seen prefigured in masturbation and conscience. The "other" whom Pan chases so compulsively is none other than his own nature, his own soul, reflected, transposed to another
key.
The key is music. Sound. Syrinx, Echo, and Pitys - who sighs (Nonnus) or moans when the wind blows through the pine trees are the sounds of nature. The nymphs reflect nature to the ear. They teach listening, and listening stops compulsion. If Pan contains an elemental kind of reflection, then we should expect to find reflection also in his own imagery and exemplified not only in the nymphs. And this we do find. Besides the music and dance, there are his shielding protective activity. Besides the Nike link with Athene - having Penelope for a mother and/or Ulysses for a father, as told by some traditions, implicate Athene - there is the fathering seed of Hermes (or Zeus, Apollo, Cronus, Uranus, Aether, or Ulysses, each of whom presents a mode of reflective spirit). Moreover there is the motif of his early rising, his appearance on vase paintings together with the dawn, the breakthrough of day.
More significant perhaps than any of these images of reflective consciousness is the fact that Pan appears in the representations of art again and again as an observer. There he stands, or sits or leans or crouches, amidst events in which he does not participate but where he is instead a subjective factor of vital attention. Wernicke says he serves to waken the interest of the onlooker, as if when we look at a painting with Pan in its background, we are the observing Pan.
Pan the observer is shown us most strikingly in those images of him with his hand raised to his forehead, gazing into the distance: Pan the "far-seeing," the "sharp-eyed," the herdsman above the herd, on guard, watching. Within the physical intensity of Pan there is a physical attentiveness, a goat's consciousness. The consciousness is not Olympian, because it is not an embodiment of superior detachment. His reflection is in connection with the herd, the awareness identical with the physical signals of nature "in here." The reflection is in the erection, in the fear, an awareness that is nature bound, as are the nymphs to their trees and rivulets, blind yet intuitive, farseeing yet immediate. Pan reflects altogether in the body, the body as instrument, as when we dance, and for which Lawrence used the metaphor of the Red Indian. This is a consciousness moving warily in the wisdom of fear through the empty places of our inscapes, where we do not know which way to take, no trail, our judging only by means of the sense, never losing touch with the flock of wayward complexes, the small fears and small excitations.
This body consciousness is of the head, but out of the head, lunatic, more like the spirit in the horns. (And the moon has horns.) It is not mental and figuring out; it is a reflection, but neither after nor even during the event (in the manner of Athene). Rather it is the manner in which an act is carried through, appropriate, economical, a dance style. As Pan is one with the nymphs, so his reflection is one with behavior itself. Rather than an epistemic subject who knows, there is the animal faith of pistis, surefooted like a goat.
The path of Pan can still be "Let nature be your guide," even where wild nature "out there" is vanishing. Nature "in here" can nevertheless be followed even through the cities and domestications, for the body still says "yes" or "no," "not this way, that," "wait," "run," "let go," or "move in now and have it."
What more could we wish from prophecy than this immediate body awareness of how, when, and what to do. Why ask for grand visions of redeemers and the fall of civilizations; why expect prophecy to come with a long beard and thunderous voice. That is too easy, the pronouncements too loud and clear. The prophet is also an interior figure, a function of the microcosm, and thus prophecy may sound no stronger than an intuition of fear or a jet of desire.
Plutarch placed his story about the death of Pan in a discussion about why the oracles had become defunct. With the death of Pan, the maidens who spoke out the natural truths were no more either, for the death of Pan means as well the death of nymphs. As Pan eventually turned into a Christian devil, so the nymphs became witches, and prophecy became sorcery. Pan's messages in the body became calls from the devil; any nymph who evoked such calls could be nothing but a seductive witch.
Pan's kind of consciousness is inherently mantic, from the ground up, so to speak. (We shall return to this theme in the next section.) It was from Pan that Apollo learned the art before he took over Delphi from Thelmis. The nymphs excite to a madness, both to nympholepsy and to the prophetic gift. The nymph Erato was prophetic at Pan's Arcadian oracle, and Daphnis, the name of Pan's shepherd love, was promantis at the oldest of all Delphic oracles, that of Gaia. The list is long of those turned mad by nymphs or gifted by them with mantle powers.
Pan and the nymphs therefore played their part in a special kind of mantics, those that healed. The waters and places beneficial for physical restoration had their spiritus loci, usually a nymph. According to Block, the nymphs brought about healing, madness and prophecy by their effects upon fantasy. As Otto says, the nymphs are preformations of the muses. The nymphs excite imagination, and one still turns to nature (instinctual in here or visible out there) to kindle imagination.
There is no access to the mind of nature without connection to the natural mind of the nymph. But when nymph has become witch and nature a dead objective field, then we have a natural science without a natural mind. Sciences devises other methods for divining nature's mind, and the nymph factor becomes an irregular variable to be excluded. Psychologists then speak of the anima problem of the scientist. But the nymph continues to operate in our psyches. When we make magic of nature, believe in natural health cures and become nebulously sentimental about pollution and conservation, attach ourselves to special trees, nooks, and scenes, listen for meanings in the wind and turn to oracles for comfort then the nymph is doing her thing.
The archetypal nymph continues to appear in the findings of clinical research into nightmare prone people. Ernest Hartmann's work at Tufts University concludes that nightmare sufferers are "people who sense of boundary is soft and undefined. They find it difficult to keep fantasy and reality separate ... They do not have a firm, clear idea of their own identity." Furthermore, Wernick reports a curious little study showing that "arts majors were three times more likely to have nightmares as were physical education majors." Again, Pan and the Muses.
The nymph in the modern soul has made the modern cult of Pan; if Pan lived vividly in the literary imagination, especially of the nineteenth century, then so did the nymph. That recrudescence of Pan may be seen altogether as a product of the nymphic imagination, an anima style of consciousness that hovered in nubile not-yetness and the horror of sexuality, in fainting, in the neurasthenic retreats into the vegetative nervous system of the misty Victorian England of Elizabeth Barrett Browning. Her first rapture on Pan was written when she was herself a nymphet of eleven or twelve. Another encounter of a Victorian with the nymph can be read in Clifford Allen's paper on John Ruskin.
In every nymph there is a Pan, in every Pan a nymph. Rawness and shyness go together. We cannot be touched by Pan without at the same time fleeing from him and reflecting upon him. Our reflections about our impersonal, filthy, gross sexuality, and our delight in it, are echoes in us of the nymph. The nymph still makes us feel shocked, and lascivious. And when goaty feelings and fantasies break out in the midst of daydreams, Pan has again been evoked by a nymph.
In each of the stories of Pan and the nymphs, including the one of his birth - for Dryope, his mother in the Homeric hymn, was a wood nymph - the nymph flees in panic from Pan. Now Pan is not the only one to make nymphs flee. Flight is essential to nymphic behavior. Think of the chases of Zeus and Apollo and Hermes. So we must ask what is going on here; what does this archetypal pattern of flight signify? Since "all of the gods are within" and since myth is going on all the time at the archetypal level of our existence, then this flight of the nymph is also going on as a process in the backwoods of the soul.
Let us put together Pan's compulsions (panic and rape) with the feminine object of his compulsion. Let us recapitulate the relation between instinct and inhibition. It was believed that Pan himself was in panic when the animals ran, and that this vision of Pan's panic set the world in terror. It is as if Pan was himself a victim of nightmares, epileptoid convulsions, and the horror that he brings. The god is what he does; his appearance is his essence. In one and the same nature is both the power of nature and the fear of that power.
In our discussion of panic we said that fear is a call to consciousness. The nymphs show this fear in their panicked flight. They are thus showing one of nature's ways, flight, which is one of the four primary instinctual reactions described by ethnologist Konrad Lorenz. Psychologically, flight becomes reflection (reflexio), the bending backward and away from the stimulus and receiving it indirectly through the light of the mind. As Jung says about this instinct:
Reflexio is a turning inwards, with the result that, instead of an instinctive action, there ensues a succession of derivative contents or states which may be termed reflection or deliberation. Thus is place of the compulsive act there appears a certain degree of freedom...
The richness of the human psyche and its essential character are probably determined by this reflective instinct. Reflection reenacts the process of excitation and carries the stimulus over into a series of images which, if the impetus is strong enough, are reproduced in some form of expression. This may take place directly, for instance in speech, or may appear in the form of abstract thought, dramatic representation, or ethical conduct; or again, in a scientific achievement or a work of art.
Through the reflective instinct, the stimulus is more or less wholly transformed into a psychic content, that is, it becomes an experience: a natural process is transformed into a conscious content. Reflection is the culture instinct par excellence... (Collected Works 8: 241-43.)
Here, Jung has conceptualized the archetypal mytheme of Pan's chase and the nymph's flight. Jung's conceptual theory is another way of stating the fantasy of the tales of the fleeing nymph. In both we find the transformation of nature into reflection, into speech, art, and culture (Eupheme and the Muses). The base of this transformation is the power of images released by the flight reaction. In a sense, culture begins in Pan's compulsion and the flight from him.
<...
Call: But Simon how can Woman flee and expect Man to Stop? If Stopping is Illegal?
Response: Blessed barbarian. Sing. Dance. Entertain and Arouse. Pine, you fucking barbarian. Compose Romantic Poetry atop the Gates of Hell. Lament. Be Mournful and Horny. YEARN. Grotesque and Beautiful you are. Unbearable. Frightening. This is what the Woman wants. From a hidden place she might be watching. Do not begrudge her her flighty nature. Do not relish in her foibles and regrets. Yo Te Amo.
...>
But lest we give too much to reflection - for alone it is sterile - let us keep reflection close to its prototype, fear. There consciousness and culture are instinctually rooted. When reflection is rooted in fear, we reflect in order to survive. It is no longer just mental reverie or contemplative knowledge.
By emphasizing the importance of the fear-flight-reflection complex we are deliberately diminishing the usual major role of love in creating culture. Eros does not seek reflection in the same compulsive way as Pan. Rather, love would abjure reflection that impedes its course; love would be blind. Even when its aim is Psyche as in the Apuleius tale, there is a distinct difference between Eros and Dionysus, on the one hand, and Pan, on the other. Their similarities are evident and their clustering (together with Aphrodite and Ariadne, with satyrs and silenoi, rabbits and kids, pin, wine, ivy, etc.) in mythical and allegorical representations is familiar enough. The differences are less familiar.
For one thing, Pan is active, the nymphs passive; the maenads are active to Dionysus's sombre quietness. For another, Eros is not a nature figure as much as he is a daimon***.*** He is often winged with unpronounced genitals, whereas Pan is often a goat with an erection. The metaphor of Eros is less concrete, physical; his intentions and emotions are different in quality and physical locus. In contrast to Pan's chases, there are no stories as such (excepting that told by Apuleius) of his loves. He is usually the agens, not the agonist. In both Eros and Dionysus, psychic consciousness seems to be present and active (maenads, Psyche, Ariadne), but in Pan instinct is always in search of soul.
A way of looking at this cluster is to follow the tradition which places both Eros and Pan in the train of Dionysus, as subsidiaries of that cosmos. A long tradition of wall and vase paintings shows Eros and Pan wrestling, to the amusement of the Dionysian circle. The contrast between the clean stripling Eros and the hirsute awkwardness of rustic paunchy Pan, with victory to Eros, was moralized to show the better of love to sex, refinement to rape, feeling to passion. Moreover, the victory of Eros over Pan could be philosophically allegorized to mean "Love conquers all."

This opposition I see also in terms of love versus panic, but not in the Christian sense of love overcoming fear. The issue here is not who conquers whom and the morals that can be derived from this victory. The death of Pan supposedly coincided with the rise of love (the Christ cult). Perhaps, the recognition of Pan as a psychic dominant implies a lessening of the tributes we pay to love, whether as Eros, Christ, or Aphrodite.
Love plays no part in Pan's world of panic, masturbation, rape, or in his chase of nymphs. These are not love stories; these are not tales of feelings and human relationships. The dance is ritual, not a couple moving together; the music sounds the uncanny pipes of Mediterranean tones, not a love song. We are out of the cosmos of Eros altogether, and instead there is sexuality and fear. Perhaps this explains why our civilization has such trouble with masturbation and rape. They could not be fitted into a world of love. When judged from love's perspective, they become pathological.
We must then draw the conclusion that the realm of love does not include all the instinctual factors of human nature, just as the figure of Eros is only one god among many. Eros does not provide appropriate guiding images for areas of our behavior governed by Pan. To go on judging our Pan behavior in the light of love continues a suppression of instinctual qualities and an enmity towards nature that cannot but have psychopathological results. The struggle between Eros and Pan, and Eros's victory, continue to put Pan down each time we say a nightmare is a bad dream, rape violates relatedness, masturbation is inferior to intercourse, love better than fear, the goat uglier than the hare.
Certainly rape is more violent, the nightmare more dreadful, masturbation more solitary, and the goat more smelly than the usual harmonies of civilized domestication. But phenomena that disrupt the usual are not ipso facto morally repugnant. If all things are full of gods, as Euripides is said to have said, then all things have their divine backing and are governed by Necessity. Even the Bible says: "To every thing there is a season, and a time to every desire under Heaven." Moral judgments made inside the walls of civilization and the laws protecting the citizen cannot do justice to outsider phenomena whose range is often "way out." The pulpit must condemn and the law incarcerate the rapist, but the psychologist's task is different. We must try to see phenomena in their own right, bracketing out our civilized commitments. The psychologist has one foot outside the wall.
Finally, the insights drawn from the relation of Pan and the nymphs can correct the Christian idea of Pan as god of unbridled pagan sexuality to be controlled by Judeo-Christian prohibitions whether through love or law. If the nymphs and Pan are one, then no prohibition is necessary. An inhibition is already present in the compulsion itself. Thus sexual passion is both holy and one aspect of reflection, as Lawrence insisted. Animal desire brings with it its own shame, its own piety.
...in composite gods the tension between chastity and passion, or penitence and pleasure, which is generally associated with the conflict between Christianity and paganism, was revealed as a phase of paganism itself.

2023.03.05 18:23 Bateman_Not_Batman [SF] Julean Cerulean

“Julean!” Sang the TV at full blast.
“Cerulean!
He’s a blue alien!”
Julean peeked out from a booth at the very back of the dark bar, his eyes glued to his own commercial.
“He’s a therapist to the stars!”
The commercial came to a fullscreen shot of his face, smiling professionally. He gave the bar a quick scan to see if anyone had recognized him.
“Hey turn dis crap off will ya?” Interrupted a gruff bar patron. “Who da hell wants to hear about some dumb blue alien?”
Julean slowly retracted his head back into the booth. Not his crowd. The commercial was his agent’s idea, anyway. He thought it might raise his profile to help with the show negotiations over at StudioTV&Film. But as luck would have it, the negotiations were over and done with before the commercial was even finished. Still, it would make for a good primer when the show actually comes out, he was told.
For a moment, Julean imagined a future where the gruff bar patron told others that he had “actually met the dumb blue alien at this very bar.” Then he drank the rest of what was in his schooner, paid the tab and left. Busy day tomorrow.
When his office entry buzzer rang the next day, it wasn’t who he expected. Does anyone ever expect it to be the cops? Guilty people, maybe. But the only people who’ve ever walked through Julean’s entryway were his patients. And sometimes his agent. And, once, the location scouts from StudioTV&Film. And, of course, the crew that were shooting his show. Julean was starting to feel like a real celebrity. Maybe the cops saw his commercial and wanted a session?
“Hello officers,” exclaimed Julean, “how can I help you?”
“Yeah I t’ought so.” Said one of them. “I’s dat blue alien from TV.”
Julean beamed. It was working. His profile was being raised so fast that first responders were coming in off the beat just to meet him.
“Yes… that’s right… it’s me.” Julean curtsied.
“So uh,” started the other one, “wha’ stars do you therapize? Anyone we wud know?”
Julean laughed his trademark smug laugh. “I think you misunderstand, my dear boy. It’s a play on words, you see? Not ‘stars’ meaning ‘celebrities’ but ‘stars’ meaning ‘the galaxy.’ I’m for those who live amongst the stars.” Another smug laugh.
“Huh.” Said the cop.
Julean feared he was already losing his new audience. “But… I have also worked with some… prominent… figures, you might say.”
“Is dat right?”
“Indeed.” Julean decided to change the subject. “So… who died?” He joked.
“Your patient. Why whadda ya know aboud it?”
Julean was stunned. Actually stunned. “Oh… nothing. Just a… figure of speech, my dear.”
“Uh huh.”
“That’s terrible. Which patient? I have so many. You know… the stars.” He put his hands in the air and curtsied again.
“Righ’. It was a patient of youses named uh Frankey Lapis. Ring any bells?”
“Well of course. Sweet, sweet, dear Frankey. Say it isn’t so.”
“It is so.”
“Indeed, but say it isn’t. May I ask how?”
“We was gonna ask you the same question, Doc. He turned up in a river on Tit’an, sector nine, but forensics says he didn’ drown. More likely died from lacerations some hours earlier den dumped in der.”
“Oh that’s horrible. Lacerations? Poor dear Frankey.”
“Yea. Well, our question to youse, Doc, is did he ever tawk about suici’e? We most likely want to rule dat out before we can fully investigate the, uh, deat’.”
“Well… this puts me in a bit of a bind. You see, everything we talked about was to be kept confidential. I couldn’t well betray dear Frankey’s confidence. Not even in death.”
“Uh huh, well, if youse don’t wanna help us ou’, we’re gonna have to do dis de hard way.”
“Ooh, interrogation? Well, I’m game. Although, I have quite the secure mind, let me tell you.” Julean went to give the officer a playful prod in the chest but it didn’t seem like he felt like playing, so Julean kept his finger to himself. “I have a feeling I’ll be able to keep it tightly locked against anything you can throw at me.”
“Nah, it’s illegal for us to interrogate youse, seein’ as youse ain’t a suspec’. I jus’ mean we’re gonna ta hav’ ta go ‘round and tawk to more people. Makes our job harder.”
“Ah, well, I’m sorry my dear but I am a… stickler for the rules, due to my exceptionally… sharp… moral compass, you see. But please do keep me up to date on how your investigations are going.”
“Uh, well, you can, uh, probably read abou’ it in de dailies.”
“The news? Why would you want to get those animals involved?”
“‘Coz his fadder was Lor’ Lazuli. Or did ‘e, uh, keep dat confidential, from youse?” His partner giggled, gruffly.
“My dear, I knew everything there was to know about dear Frankey.” He didn’t, clearly, and it would have bothered his oft-massaged ego even more if his mind hadn’t already gone to how a high profile case like this could affect his upcoming TV show’s ratings. Perhaps even the show itself. His thoughts started to race. Would StudioTV&Film still want to produce his show if he was somehow involved in the case? Would his professional integrity be questioned? At least his (ex)patient, Frankey, was star-adjacent now. That had to add some draw. Either way, that’s not the kind of show Julean wanted to make, he told himself. He was far higher brow than celebrity gossip.
“Well, tha’s all fer now, Doc.” Concluded the officer. “Don’ leave town, huh?” The two of them sustained an even gruffer giggle as they left the office and walked down the hallway.
Later that evening, Julean called his agent.
“Raspar & Raspar Incorporated. Toaddy speaking. Is that you, Julean darling?”
“Toaddy, my dear, I have a somewhat… difficult… question to ask. So I first beg of you to receive it in the most nonjudgmental manner possible.”
“Of course, Julean darling. Are you using again?”
“No, no, my dear. Nothing like that. This is about a patient. Well… now… ex… patient of mine, if I’m completely honest.”
“Ok, well, shoot, darling.”
“Well… if I was to say that I was somehow connected… through this… ex… patient, you see, to a kind of a… high profile… celebrity police investigation, would that cause any kind of problems with the… show?”
“Julean. Darling. What are you caught up in?”
“Oh my dear, no, no.” Short smug laugh. “This is purely… speculation.”
“Oh well, thank the bloody stars for that.”
Julean grinned, nervously confident.
“Darling, if you were caught up in anything untoward, the network would immediately shut it down. It’s Ganymede6, after all. They’re a notoriously family-oriented network. They’re paying for this whole thing. StudioTV&Film are just producing it. They’re not calling any of the shots. Although, I’m not sure they’d be over the moons either.”
Julean’s face fell. “Well. Lucky I’m not then, my dear Toaddy.”
Julean offered a half-hearted farewell and hung up. He would not, repeated for dramatic effect, NOT let anything get in the way of the success of his show. His five year plan depended on it. He decided, at that very moment, that he couldn’t let those useless cops ‘investigate’ Frankey’s death so publicly. And he certainly couldn’t let their lack of fidelity screw up his impending fame and fortune, not that he was doing it for the money. So he also decided, also at that very moment, that he would use his superior intellect and unmatched understanding of the mind to solve this case in half, nay, a quarter of the time that it would take anyone else.
He sat down with dear old Frankey’s files and played back his recent session tapes. He was sure there would be clues in there somewhere. His confidence was a little dashed in regards to not knowing Frankey was related to Lord Lazuli, but maybe that in itself was a clue? Of course! On the tapes, Frankey talked about a silent partnership in a ‘new venture’. He must have been trying to distance himself from the family name, perhaps the family business and maybe even the family money. “This investigation is a lark!” Julean exclaimed. He would have it solved by the morning.
Morning came. The case wasn’t solved yet but Julean had identified a number of leads to follow up on: the ‘new venture,’ of course; somebody Frankey constantly referred to as ‘X’; and, the most promising of all, a tiki bar that Frankey mentioned multiple times, which also happened to be on Titan. Julean felt it would be smart to take a twenty minute investigation nap before heading over there to gather more evidence.
Four hours later, he woke up and was readier than ever to get the investigation going. Titan was just a short lightspeed jaunt away. Julean changed his shirt, added a Panama hat to zhuzh up his look, grabbed a few of Frankey’s session tapes and headed over to his local lightspeed station. Less than an hour later he was walking into Frankey’s old Titan tiki haunt. He picked a table that would give him the best vantage point over the other patrons and ordered what sounded like the most sophisticated cocktail from the menu. Moments later, the server brought over a fishbowl the size of his head, filled with a liquid almost as blue as he is, with enough tropical fruit decorating it to make a fruit salad. A third through his tropical monstrosity, he started to think that he was playing the part of the no good, day drinking, alcoholic pretty well. So well, that he decided to order another. He tilted his Panama hat a little further forward to give off that ‘incognito’ vibe, and tried to identify anyone who could be a possible fit for ‘X’.
“Do I know ya?” Demanded a lady in his eyeline.
“Not that I know of, my dear.” He responded.
“Haven’t I seen you in here before?”
Julean decided every lead was worth chasing and turned on his investigatory charm. “Well, maybe. How often do you… tiki?”
“Huh? Oh, I’m in he’e all the time. That’s why I think I must know ya.”
“Well, when was the last time you… saw me… here?” He could feel the words coming out a little wonky but went with it anyway. This lady was clearly blottoed too.
“Dunno. Maybe tha other night. With tha dancers from one of tha Keplers. And tha fight.”
“Fight?”
“Brawwl! Big one it was. Ya wasn’t here?”
“Oh brawl. Yes, my dear, yes. It was quite the… clash… of the… Titans.”
“Ha. Ya funny. So ya was here.”
“Yes. In fact, I was here with a friend of mine… Frankey Lapis?”
“Don’ know ‘im.”
Damn, thought Julean.
“Say, ya wanna getta bite to eat?” Slurred the lady.
“Oh… no my dear. Liquid lunch today.” Julean supped down what was left and gave the giant glass a little ‘empty’ shake to excuse himself. He helped himself up to his feet and moseyed as well as he could over to the bar. The bartender pointed at him, Julean pointed to his empty fish bowl and thumbs’d up and the bartender thumbs’d up back. A pause in whatever interplanetary sports league they were showing on the giant screens gave way to a Galactic News segment. Julean stared as well as he could at the familiar face staring back at him from the screen.
“Frankey. Dear boy.”
“You knew him?” Asked the bartender, looking through Julean’s third drink’s tropical fruit forest.
“Yes. Very well.” Julean actually felt a little sentimental. He listened out for details from the newscaster. There wasn’t much, they had the body and the name he went by.
“He was a good dude.” The bartender offered.
Julean sensed an opening. “Yes… and he loved this place…” he tee’d up.
“Tha’s right. He was in ‘ere all the time. Had some good laughs. Afta a lotta drinks, if ya know what I mean.”
Julean supped down on his giant blue drink and winked in affirmation.
“So, was you here with him the other night?”
“Yes. The brawl!” Julean put up his dukes.
“Ha. Yeah. Brawl? I mean, I’ve never seen such a put on. Know whad I mean?”
“Yes.” Julean didn’t. “No. What do you mean?”
“Oh, you thought that was real? Guess they’re getting better.”
“Real?”
“The kids. Whassisname. The art guy.”
“Art?”
“No, no, his name’s Duffy or somethin’. He does art. He’s an artist. I guess.”
“I’m sorry my dear, I haven’t the foggiest idea what you're talking about.”
“So dis guy, Duffy or whatever, puts on dese ‘fights’ all over the place. You know, like, performing art or somethin’.”
“Performance art?”
“Yeah.”
“Sorry, what does this have to do with poor dear Frankey?”
“That was the last time anybody saw him. I thought you knew that.”
“Well… yes… yes I did.”
“Yeah. Well after the police cleared everyone out, he was gone too.”
“Right.”
“And then he turns up in tha river. Why does it feel like this is all news ta you?”
“No, no my dear. Just waking up from a little drunken stupor.”
“Yeah, well I was going to say tha's probably tha last one I can serve ya. Don’t want them cops back again.”
“The cops. Right. Do you remember anything else about that night, my dear?”
“You know, I got people waiting.” The bartender excused himself. “You got someone who can get you home?”
Julean waved him off. He knew he was done talking.
Duffy. Duffy. The name went over and over in Julean’s tropically addled mind. Frankey never mentioned a ‘Duffy’ in their sessions. Did they know each other? Or was it just a coincidence that they were in the bar together? Was Duffy ‘X’? Frankey always had a thing about artists. Was Frankey involved in the performance art? Was it the ‘new venture’? What if this whole disappearing thing was part of the art? No, they have his body. And lacerations. That’s right, the cops said he died from lacerations. Perhaps from broken glass? How ‘real’ were these fake fights? Damn, he should have gotten so much more out of the bartender. The tropical concoction had gotten the better of him. He could see the bartender staying over at the other side of the bar and knew he didn’t want to serve him any more drinks, or any more information, more’s the point. But he said that Duffy puts on these fake fights all the time. That means there must be a record somewhere. Julean went online and started checking Titan’s local art rag.
D’foe! “Ha… not Duffy!” Julean cried out. The bartender glared. Julean buried his head back in the art article. D’foe Ver Milion, an up and comer in Titan’s affluent art community. It looked like these staged fights were a monthly occurrence. D’foe even had an exhibition at a gallery on the other side of town. Julean paid his tab, doffed his Panama at the bartender and stumbled out into the early afternoon.
The walk was doing Julean good. He could feel his incredibly sharp mind getting back to its peak state. He hit play on one of Frankey’s tapes and imagined him walking these streets. Imagined him at Titan’s other fine establishments. Fine, as in, not great. He thought about all of Frankey’s secrets that may or may not reside in and around these buildings. Secrets that he didn’t even tell his therapist! How did Julean not know he was the son of a lord? Was anything he told him actually true? Well, yes, the tiki bar. He certainly never mentioned a D’foe. So D’foe could well be ‘X’. Frankey did always have a thing for artists. Julean turned a corner to see the gallery. He pushed open the door and went inside. Large scale photographs of the ‘fight’ scenes covered the walls. Quite beautiful, in a shocking sort of everyman kind of way. Julean studied them as he went around, hoping to catch a glimpse of Frankey somewhere, until he noticed he was being studied too.
“This is not a, um, community gallery, sir.” Said a taut lady at the back of the room.
“Pardon, my dear?” Asked Julean, genuinely inquiring.
“The entrance fee is not merely a suggestion.” She clarified.
“Oh… of course, my dear. How much do I…”
“You can pay me here,” she tapped on her console, “before consuming anymore of the installation, please.”
“Of course.” Julean paid and kept his investigatory charm going. “Have you worked for D’foe long? Stunning imagery. Frightful realism. Masterful mind at work.”
“I don’t work for Mr Ver Milion. I’m employed by the gallery.”
“Right. Of course. Well, you’re in good company.”
“Yes, D’foe Ver Milion is incredibly important to the artistic community here on Titan. I gather you’re not, um, a resident?”
“Well, I travel the galaxy for work, I see myself as a resident of the entire universe. You may have seen my television commercial?”
“No.” The lady tsk’d. “Television.” She almost spat the word out onto the floor.
“Well… anything else you can tell me about the collection?”
“The exhibition will be on for three more weeks, at which point we have a closing event that Mr Ver Milion will attend in person.”
Julean’s eyes lit up.
“The event, of course, will be invitation only.”
Julean’s eyes drooped back down again. This whole thing would be over in three weeks anyway. He would be linked to the case, lose his TV show and have to go back to his regular, depressing, patients. He smiled a dejected smile at the gallery lady and continued studying the large scale photographs. They really were breathtaking. He noted that the fights seemed to get so real that chairs were broken and trash cans were knocked over, tables were turned, glasses smashed. Glasses! Maybe the lacerations were made by broken glass? Perhaps, if the performance got out of hand, a shy, reserved participant like Frankey could be accidentally lacerated in the melee. But killed? The cops did say they were looking into suicide. Julean supposed that if the lacerations from the broken glass were on Frankey’s wrists or neck or anywhere else with an artery, and if he was at the bottom of a heaving crowd of performance artists, he could likely have bled out before the ‘fight’ was broken up. This could very well be an accidental death. And this D’foe would understandably not want his art associated with a real death. It may increase the value of the art, in time, but it would implicate him in manslaughter or something. He would most likely go to jail. So maybe he dumped the body? “Understandable.” Julean could relate. Had he solved the case? Well, he still hadn’t seen Frankey in any of the large scale photographs he was studying. Perhaps he wasn’t one of the performers but was still caught up in the tiki brawl all the same? His conviction in his own deductions were starting to wear a little thin, when a foil sticker on the side of one of the large frames caught his eye. It had an address on it. An address right here on Titan. Julean checked the other pieces and saw the same foil address sticker.
“Well, it’s either the framer’s… or D’foe’s himself.” He mumbled.
The gallery lady gave him a stern stare. Julean doffed his Panama and headed out to follow up on his new, potentially promising, lead.
The warehouse building that stood at the address on the foil sticker didn’t give Julean anymore clues. It could just as easily be an industrial framing facility as it could be an artist’s compound. The only thing that gave it away was a tricycle in the entryway. Julean couldn’t decide whether to feel aloof or threatened. He had always imagined there was an ‘art’ to what he did. But he still wanted everybody to know that he was way smarter than anybody who merely painted or took pictures or whatever for a living. Still, no one thought that therapists were ‘cool’. Not ‘cool’ like artists anyway. He decided the tricycle made him feel aloof. It might be cute for a performance artist to ride around on one but if he did the same he would lose all of his patients, not to mention his credibility. He was better than that. It gave him the confidence boost he needed as he hopped up the stairs to the floor where the studio was. The booze had mostly worn off and he was feeling sharp as a tack, ready to interrogate the hell out of this artist type.
“Yes, hello, what can I do for you?” Asked (who Julean assumed was) D’foe.
“Hello my dear boy. I’ve just witnessed the most… striking… exhibition and I was looking for the artist whose brilliant mind it came from. Are you… D’foe Ver Million?”
“Mmm. Who’s asking?”
“My name’s Cerulean. Julean Cerulean, my dear.” Hat doff. “I strive to help young artists, such as yourself, with financial backing and exposure-“
D’foe cut him off. “Aren’t you that TV shrink?”
“Yes, my dear, my work in the televisual… arts… allows me to offer young artists, such as yourself, more opportunity than-“
“Ok, whatever, come in, look around.”
“Thank you, dear boy. D’foe? Is it?”
“Yesss.”
“Wonderful.” Julean marched into the warehouse studio. He was starting to feel a little threatened again so he emphasized his well-educated stride and pompous pauses even more. “Tell me about these… wonderful… fight scenes you orchestrate.”
“You know. We fight. I shoot it. It’s all brutality and toxic masculinity and all that. Real Stone Age stuff.”
“Yes! Yes. We surround ourselves with these modern objets, modern machines. ‘The future!’ we tell ourselves. But our minds… our minds are primitive, my dear.”
“Right, yeah.”
“And how many… fighters… do you usually have sparring at once?”
“Started small. Two, three, four. But now I’m, like, choreographing, like, thirty or forty and stuff.”
“My dear boy, that is rather impressive isn’t it?”
“Yah, I guess so.”
“Yes! It is! And do you know all of the… pugilists… by name?”
“Sure. Some. Most. All. Sure.”
“I wonder… did you ever work with… a wonderful acquaintance of mine… a person named…” Julean stopped pacing for dramatic effect, “Frankey Lapis? Otherwise known as Frankey Lazuli?”
“Yah. No. Who? No, I don’t know him.”
Julean had gotten what he needed, an opening. Now to turn the screws.
“Are you sure D’foe? Are you certain, dear boy?”
“Wait. What? Hey. Relax. Do you wanna buy somma my art or not?”
Julean cooled off, to do a little ‘good cop, bad cop’. “Yes, dear boy. Yes I do. Now, what do you have to show me?”
D’foe, a little flustered and acting fairly guilty, even if he wasn’t sure what of, showed Julean around all his various projects, past and in-progress, in the studio. He half-heartedly explained each. Julean thought that if he really was looking to back an artist, it wouldn’t be this flake. He hardly knew how good any of his own work was and had no idea whatsoever how to sell it. It was while D’foe was fairly nonchalantly trying to explain a really rather exquisite collection of his ceramics that Julean noticed Frankey’s news story in the Transgalactic Press open on D’foe’s console. He switched back to ‘bad cop’ to turn the screws even harder.
“Well… would you look at that? The Frankey you swore you didn’t know is right here on your newsfeed.”
“Well, yah, that’s why I was, like, confused when you was asking.”
“Confused? Confused my dear boy? You might have well confessed!”
“What? Confessed? What are you talking about?”
“You know full well, don’t you? Don’t you, dear boy?”
“No!”
“Yes! You killed him, didn’t you? Didn’t you, dear boy?”
“No-o!”
“Yes! You tried to hide it didn’t you? By dumping his body. What did you kill him for? Money? Jealousy? The thrill?”
“Alright, alright, I heard he died at my show the other night but that’s all. That’s all!”
“Ah ha!” Julean felt a rush like he’d never felt before. In his line of work this was called a breakthrough, but it usually took months, or even years. In his investigatory capacity he was getting a breakthrough in minutes.
“Please!” Begged D’foe, “I can’t do this right now. You’ve got to go. You’ve got to. Otherwise I’m calling the police. I’m calling them!”
“Call them. Call them! Confess to them too!”
“No. Stop it. No!” He broke down in tears.
“Alright, my dear boy, alright. There, there.” ‘Good cop.’ “Now what else can you tell me?”
Just as he thought he was getting somewhere, Julean heard the studio door open. He looked over to see a small gang of performance art types heading his way. Julean guessed these were the fake fighters from D’foe’s photographs, and wondered if all that fake fighting meant they knew how to real fight.
“Get him out of here,” cried D’foe, “get him out!”
The performance artists stared at Julean standoffishly. He knew that, despite his imperceptibly strong mind, his body was actually frightfully weak. Fearing that this would turn physical, he stepped away and held his arms up to the gang. “I’m going, don’t worry my dears, I’m going. I’ve got what I want. Right, my dear?” D’foe sobbed harder. The performance artists all stepped towards Julean. He held his hands higher and backed towards the door.
“You know, you all look like you could use a few sessions. Fathers didn’t love you? Mothers smothered you? I’m actually serious now, my dears, I could do you all some good! Think about it. Ganymede-555-5555.” He kept backing out. “Look out for my commercial!”
The largest performance artist stepped closer to him and reached out, Julean winced, but it was only to slam the door in his face. “And watch my show when it airs!” He shouted through the closing door.
Wow. What. A. Rush. Julean decided to stake the place out to see if it turned up anything new.
He found a hip little café across the street that had a good view of the entrance and of D’foe’s studio windows. He could see D’foe pacing back and forth and his performance art entourage following him, trying to calm him down. Beyond the warehouse, through the golden haze, Julean could see the light was leaving the Titan sky. It left behind a beautiful shock of bright orange, which faded gradually into a deep, dark purple before dropping away completely to black. A star in the distance twinkled at him. Julean imagined it was someone watching his commercial on a distant planet, deciding to book an appointment.
Eventually, D’foe and the performance artists moved away from the windows. Julean adjusted his view to the entrance and counted the steps that they were likely walking down. Right on cue, the entrance door swung open and a still irate D’foe marched through, his entourage trailing faithfully. Julean watched them disappear around the next block, he daintily drained his espresso cup and wandered back over to the warehouse entrance. It was unlocked. “Artists, ha!” Julean said out loud.
Back inside the studio, Julean took a self-guided tour around the various exquisite works of art, absorbed, now that he didn’t have interrogation on his mind. D’foe really was some kind of artistic genius, even if he didn’t know it. Julean wondered if he could get any of these works out of here without anyone noticing but then surmised that art theft truly would implicate him in this whole mess. He didn’t know if he couldn’t prove that D’foe was ‘X’ but he might be able to prove he was involved in Frankey’s death. He just needed something to corroborate it, so he could go to the cops and shut this whole thing down and finally get back to his own life and career and impending success. He decided the proof wouldn’t be in the art, it would be in paperwork or correspondence. He dug through D’foe’s various desks and drawers and filing cabinets. “What… a… mess.” He kept muttering to himself. But he was starting to see a pattern. Various checks and invoices and even handwritten notes from a P.B.B. or P.Bellrose, sometimes P.B.Bracken and, on a couple of occasions, merely Prestly. “Would love to get my hands on this identity complex,” he said to himself. Prestly Bellrose Bracken’s various pieces of paperwork often came on headed papers, each of which had different addresses, most of them were around Titan. “This P.B.B. must own half the moon,” Julean muttered, “or, at least, rent it.” He scribbled down the most likely address where he would find them, the PBB Building downtown, and slid out of the studio door, thoroughly impressed with his own investigatory skills.
It was late. Julean didn’t feel like going all the way back to Ganymede, even though lightspeed travel basically meant it took no time at all. It was more a question of distance from the case. Julean had pretty much cracked it in a day. All he needed was some confirmation of D’foe’s character from this Bellrose or Bracken or whatever they went by, and then he would be able to go to the police with a solid accusation. Bracken was clearly an upstanding member of the prestigious Titan community. Julean imagined himself in their company for a while. In their circle, even. Perhaps they could all benefit from a few sessions with him. Maybe this could be a new segment on his show? The high society of Titan and their terrible traumas. Julean checked into a nearby high end hotel resort and got a suite. He deserved some pampering. He took a shower and a steam. Titan’s water really was quite exquisite. He ordered a tossed salad from room service and settled down in front of the big flat screen in his bedroom for the night. The first thing he saw, when he clicked it on, was a story about Frankey. The newscasters had a lot more information than he saw in the tiki bar earlier. Obviously, they had Frankey’s body. “Yes.” Confirmed Julean out loud. They also had the Lazuli family connection. “Ok.” They knew that he was last seen at the Titan tiki bar. “Damn.” And they also had footage of the body being dumped. “What?” Albeit dark, grainy and censored footage. Julean knew the cops must be feeding them information. It was only a matter of time before they connected him to it all. Or maybe they already knew but were drip feeding the audience.
Julean hardly slept at all that night. He was so close to cracking the case, but not so close that his TV show and impending success were safe. He hardly touched his scrambled eggs the next morning, eager to get to Bellrose Bracken’s and then onto the police station.
He was so relieved when P.B.B.’s secretary let him in, that he didn’t even notice how strange it was that Prestly already recognized him.
“Doctor Cerulean, I presume.”
“Yes! You must have seen my commercial.”
“Right. That’s right.”
“Well… then you’ll appreciate that I’m a professional, my dear, and allow me to get straight to the point.”
“Go ahead.”
“I’ve been investigating the death of Frankey Lapis, aka Frankey Lazuli, and through process of in-ves-tig-a-tory elimination have deduced that the murder was carried out by none other than your charge… D’foe Ver Milion.” Julean paused for effect. “Does this surprise you, my dear?”
“Not at all.”
“Oh. Really?”
“No. D’foe’s a barbaric type.”
“Well… exactly. In fact… I’d hoped I could obtain a character assessment from you to aid in my accusation to the police.”
“The police?”
“That’s right, my dear.”
“Whatever you need.”
“Well… thank you.” Julean was finding this whole investigatory thing pretty easy. He was quite adept at it.
“You were Frankey’s therapist, correct?”
Julean’s stomach dropped. The news must have released his information. Those animals.
“He spoke very highly of you.” Prestly continued.
“You… knew… Frankey?”
“Yes. We were business partners for some time.”
“He… never…”
“Never mentioned me? Yes, I know. He withheld a lot from you. His family. His work. He told me.”
Julean wasn’t sure what to say, for once.
“Anyway, let me write you that character assessment.”
Julean’s mind was already in overdrive. Was D’foe actually ‘X’? How did P.B.B. fit in? Was he involved in Frankey’s ‘new venture’? Prestly just said they were business partners. How did he know so much?
P.B.B. continued, “D’foe would probably benefit from a session or two with you. Although, I imagine you have to listen to a lot of his type drivel on.”
Julean went into wordplay autopilot. “Yes. All day. You could say I’m bored certified.”
“What’s that?”
“Just a little… healthcare humor, my dear. ‘Bored’ as in ‘board.’” Julean clarified. “It works better written down.”
Just then, something in Julean’s calculations clicked.
After he left P.B.B., he raced back to D’foe’s. He should have been headed to the police. He thought he had this case all tied up. It had all made perfect sense. All except for who ‘X’ was. Julean reminded himself that he was very ethically minded. He couldn’t send the wrong man down just to save his burgeoning TV career. He surprised even himself, thinking that way. He got to the warehouse and raced up the steps, burst through the door and tried to compose himself.
“‘Ey, whassup up, Doc?” Said a familiar voice.
“Officer?” Questioned Julean.
“Yea, dat’s right. Whad are you doin’ here?”
The other officer led D’foe out of the back room, cuffed and crying.
“Have you arrested that man?” Asked Julean.
“Yea, whassit to ya?” Demanded the officer.
“Well… I came to a… similar… conclusion during my own investigation.”
“Youses investagation? Whadda youse doing investagatin’? Ya lucky we don’ drag youse downtown fer leaven’ Ga’mede.”
“Well I… think you’re wrong, my dear.”
“I don’ give a ratsass wha’ you t’ink.”
“But what makes you think-“
“We got da footage of ‘im dumpin’ da bady!” The officer raised his voice as his partner dragged D’foe out of the door by his handcuffs.
“D’foe, my dear-” Julean pleaded.
“Don’ tawk to ‘im.” Snarled the second officer.
“D’foe, what does Prestly have to do with… all this?”
“It was a commission. A commiss-”
“Shaddap.” The other officer walloped him on the head.
“Officer, my dear, this is brutality.” Pleaded Julean.
“Yea, well, welcome ta police work- ‘ey look, Doc, you’re on TV.”
Julean looked over at the flat screen, expecting his commercial to be staring back at him. But, in fact, it was everything he had been trying to avoid over the past few days.
“Lazuli’s therapist was none other than a Doctor Julean Cerulean.” Informed the news anchor, playfully. “The, self-appointed, ‘therapist to the stars,’” she giggled. “He must have some pretty famous patients to deserve that moniker.” She guffawed. “You ever gone to see the Doc, Berta?”
“Never heard of him!” Laughed the other anchor. “His patients can’t be that famous.”
“Well, he’s got a famous patient now. Even if Lazuli is an ‘ex’ patient.”
The room felt quiet.
“It’s a play on words.” Julean said quietly, to no one. “Animals.”
While he was fully absorbing his career dissolution at the hands of a couple of daytime news jackals, the officers had forcibly removed D’foe from his art studio, stuffed him into the back of their police cruiser and left.
Julean stared at the screen. His name and credentials were running along a ticker below the dark, grainy, censored footage of Frankey’s body being dumped. Forever indelibly linked to a horrific crime. He felt his phone vibrate.
“It doesn’t look good, darling.” Said Toaddy on the other end.
“I know… just… give me a minute, my dear.” Julean said as he hung up. Frankey’s tapes were racing around inside his head. D’foe didn’t actually seem like a killer. Certainly not a mastermind. He was more like a scapegoat. A patsy. Prestly must be more involved. But how? Why? Ex business partners? Did Frankey screw him over? That didn’t sound like Frankey. He didn’t care about money. He didn’t care about power. He didn’t even care about business. He cared about art. He cared about love. Ex lover? That made more sense.
Julean felt like he was about to lose everything. So he was determined not to lose the case, however loose his theories were. He ran back over to Prestly’s building, past the secretary and straight into the office.
“Twice in one day, doctor? I hope you’re not planning to bill me.” Prestly smirked.
“You’re not a patient, my dear.” Julean huffed. “But you should be.”
“How so?”
“You’re the ‘X’.”
“What’s that?”
“‘X’, meaning ‘Ex’. It makes more sense written down.”
“What are you talking about?”
“You were the reason he was always on Titan.”
“Business.”
“That ended sometime ago. But your relationship didn’t. Not until more recently.”
“Relationships end everyday.”
“Yes, but for you, that was the final rejection. You’d been broken up about losing Frankey as a business partner for years. You couldn’t understand it. He said he didn’t care about money, you couldn’t understand it. He said he didn’t care about power, you couldn’t understand it. He said he didn’t care about the business. His family name. Everything you cared so much about. You thought the two of you were the same. You kept thinking it was you he was trying to leave. Not the business. Not the money. Not the power. Not the family name. But he wasn’t. You were the only thing he did care about. But it tore you up because you couldn’t understand that about him. And it tore him up that you didn’t believe him. And that tore the two of you apart! And you couldn’t let that happen-”
“Now, wait just a minute-” Prestly seemed to be rattled for the first time.
“You paid D’foe to do it. You were already paying him. What’s another commission? A commission to commit murder! How did you even know D’foe? Did Frankey discover him? Was art his ‘new venture’? He always had a thing about artists.”
Prestly looked past Julean, horrified. Julean turned around to see P.B.B.’s secretary at the door, with a phone in his hand, surrounded by a growing number of employees. Both Prestly and Julean knew that meant the police were on their way.
Prestly paced. Julean felt his phone buzz again.
“Darling. You’ve got to face the music sometime. Look, I have StudioTV&Film and Ganymede6 on the other line. I can get you out of all of this without having to pay the kill fee but you will have to work with me, darling. You will have to do as I say-“
“Wait… my dear. Get StudioTV&Film over to the PBB Building in Titan Central Plaza right now. We’re going to shoot some promos.”
“But darling. They don’t want you. That’s what I’m trying to tell you.”
“Get them here. Now. If they don’t like what they see, I’ll pay the kill fee out of my own pocket.”
“But darling, it’s two billion-” Julean hung up.
“Prestly,” he said. “My dear. I think I can help.”
“What the blazes are you talking about?”
“You! I think I can help you! You said Frankey spoke very highly of me. And I was certainly helping him. I could help you… move on! Get over him!”
“In prison? Because that’s where I’m going!”
“Why not? I’m very good. And it’ll make a wonderful setting for my new television show.”
“You’re crazy.”
“Indeed. And it might just work, my dear. Now… tell me… what happened.”
The next week, the promos for Julean’s new show ran everywhere. Ganymede6’s parent network, Jupiter Entertainment, upped their media buy. It was set to become their hit show of the season. The murder that had gripped the galaxy, the leader of Titan’s high end community at the center of it all, the therapist of the victim who was attempting to turn the jilted ex lover’s life around during a life sentence in prison. “What’s more ‘family’ than a story of reformation?” Ganymede6 reassured themselves. The ratings were going to be out of this world!
“You’re all stars to me, my dears.” Julean said to camera. “Come and see me soon. And… until then… keep on shining”
“Julean!
Cerulean!
He’s a blue alien!
He’s a therapist to the stars!
And the people who live in them!”

2022.12.31 00:34 Wapulatus Respect Ajani Goldmane! (Magic: The Gathering)

"I have seen tyrants whose ambitions knew no limits. Creatures who styled themselves gods, or praetors, or consuls, but thought only of their own desires, not of those they ruled. Whole populations deceived. Civilizations plunged into war. People who were simply trying to live made to suffer. To die."
"Never again. Until all have found their place, I will keep watch."

Ajani Goldmane

Background

Ajani Goldmane is torn between his leonin ferocity and his sense of justice. He was born on Naya and became an outcast within his own family, an albino leonin never accepted by the rest of his pride. The only person who cared about him was his brother Jazal, the leader of their pride and Ajani's inspiration. Ajani had always shown potential as a mage and healer, but had assumed his main calling was to be a warrior in Jazal's service. The day that Ajani's brother was assassinated by unknown forces was the day that Ajani's Planeswalker spark ignited, and everything changed.
No longer could Ajani worry about his problems with his pride. His quest to discover his brother's killer has led him into a tangle of intrigue woven by mysterious forces, forcing him to broaden his skills as a warrior and to unlock new potential within himself. After thwarting Nicol Bolas's plans on Alara, Ajani set aside his anger and began to travel the Multiverse. He became a mentor to leonin communities on many planes, including Theros.

2022.12.01 05:33 vault_disney YAVP, Boris cosplay challenge, can't believe it

https://pastebin.com/WqfCpRrw
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sPBbWVYuNLQ&list=PLjYhpGCfoYYq5BMS2ijs5wZCCzHOfg4GE&index=2&ab_channel=Melvins-Topic
The crawl cosplay site is down, but the challenge was:
MuCj
3 out of 4 spells under 10% fail: iron shot, fridge, OOD, invisibility (evocable with 12).
Fighting and one magic school (can be spellcasting) at 27
Either heavy armor (over 5ER) or shield, not both.
Win the game or get a cumulative 6 different runes over several games, I just used this character.
Bring a figurine of a ziggurat out of the dungeon.

Where do I even begin? Why not at the end. I went to Pan for some runes (wanted 6 in case this character died) and to get polar vortex solid, some air magic online. Zapped a few bosses, got MCC and most of chain lightning good to go, went to check a zig for more XP/a necessary ziggurat figurine for the challenge.
Zig 1 had a few really nasty floors, bailed, OK, tomb it is. Tomb 1 was reasonable, tomb 2 used 1/2 blink scrolls and blew the doors off the place, nice. Went back upstairs and saw the highest concentration of royal mummies I've ever encountered. I nuked them so hard I stat zeroed strength, collapsed, teleported out. Painful surprise, but I'm alive, crawled to vestibule, nuked my way back to health, walked back down.
By this point I was sick of how bad the dungeon roughed me up over the past week, blinked to tomb:3 door and must've chain lightninged 20 scarabs at once, had to have been my most hate-filled cast of a spell, very satisfying. Camped out on the upstair and firestormed every man woman and child left, very nice, getting late, ready to finish zot:5 and call it a wrap.
Be a HUMONGOUS IDIOT and get triple teamed by some OOF, no more blink scrolls, know I'd be fine with a quick refill but I'm a mummy........ You know.... I've been carrying around these distortion weapons this whole time because of some old advice I read about self-banishing, I'm sure if I popped down to abyss:3 I could chill out and come back ready to kill the last 2 OOF.
Abyss, motherfucking, six, soon to be seven. SURPRISE. Heart dropped, stayed barely alive at around 60 health for a bit before realizing I couldn't hack it, fuck it, set down the zig figurine and entered my first ever Zig 2.
At zig number 2 I knew I needed 2 things: means to survive and fight my way out of the abyss, and another damned figurine to finish the challenge. Half an hour later of level 9 spell spam I had an amulet of vitality, good leather armor with regen, and another figurine. Lucky me.
Back in abyss:7, find rune but need flight to cross lava, only source of flight is polar vortex, found it wouldn't last long enough, found a door and left.
WOW. That was by far the most extreme crawl experience I've ever had. Nearly died to jorgun, nearly died to vv, nearly died in the first zig etc., and had some of the worst teleport luck of my life (several instances of 2 or 3 teleports landing me in the same screen, one double comically being in zot). Playing with restrictions and the ability to carry over milestones was pretty interesting. Too often I'd try to accomplish milestones instead of working on my character's survivability, trusting that I'd get the milestones when the character matured. You live and you learn.
I need more calming hobbies... I advise you all to play better than me and avoid the stress. Also now you know self-banishing is not a joke.

GE15: Introduction to Political Coalitions for Young Voters
Dear young voters,
I understand that for someone who’s still fresh out of secondary school, politics probably wasn’t on your list things to learn until very recently. On the internet, I know you’ve also probably read at least a hundred reasons to go out to vote, and you’ve also been shouted left and right by many as if the world is ending if you don’t vote. I’m sure it’s not that you don’t care; you’re probably just feeling annoyed, intimidated or confused by how much you’re expected to act like an adult when you know very little about the world!
As an educator, I just wanted help you out: I have summarised all the different political coalition parties below in a way that you might easily understand. In this write-up I will give you the pros and cons of voting for each coalition, so that you can better understand how to be part of the change Malaysia needs. You don’t need to read through everything; just jump to the parts that are relevant to you.
I hope you find this helpful, and please do share with your friends / translate it etc to help more people to benefit from this. Contributions and corrections from the older voters are welcomed, but let’s keep this write-up evidence-based and objective. :)

BARISAN NASIONAL (BN)

https://preview.redd.it/vf9xxu0kncy91.png?width=200&format=png&auto=webp&s=a02a2a00c4b87463f1927a0ab9826c713401e21d
Intro: BN was fundamentally built by three parties: the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO), Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) and the Malaysian Indian Congress (MIC), representing the three major races in Malaysia. BN was formed long before you were born (used to be called ‘Parti Perikatan’ in the early years), and most of the prime ministers you learned about (Tunku, Razak, Hussein Onn, Mahathir, Abdullah, Najib) were all from BN. BN has been governing Malaysia since its formation, until the last election where the Malaysian people decided to vote them out (mainly due to Najib swindling billions of ringgit for himself).
Why people vote for BN: BN has led our government for 61 years, so they are rather familiar with the ways of governing a country, which is rather complex because it involves finances, businesses and empowering the society, finding a balance between all these things are no easy task. People who vote for BN are those who don’t want big changes: they like how the things are going at the moment, they want peacefulness and stability, and are comfortable with how Malaysia is heading to. BN is also the only coalition that that has race-based parties represented by the 3 main race groups in Malaysia, so this is favourable to the generation of people who are more comfortable with race-based politics. It has been shown that people from rural areas (not in the city) generally vote for BN, because the village folks get a lot of help from BN in the past, while other coalitions have not really had the finances and means to bridge long term relationships with these people.
Why people don’t vote for BN: You should know that the top leadership of BN, people like Najib Razak and Ahmad Zahid Hamidi are accused of a lot of corruption charges, meaning that they have abused their power to earn money that wasn’t supposed to belong to them. Voting for them implies a support for corrupted leaders to continue to lead the country! When a political coalition is in power, they have the means of overwriting court decisions, so this means that there is a chance that Najib may be released from prison, and Zahid's charges may be dropped, allowing both of them to be free. From many people’s guesses, Zahid made the election happen now (despite of warnings of floods and rain) because he wants to get back in power and be released from all the charges from the court. In terms of MCA and MIC, their support from the Chinese and Indians have dwindled because generally they have not done anything significant for their communities, so voting for them implies no major changes in the quality of life, and the continuation of UMNO-dominated politics and policies.

PAKATAN HARAPAN (PH)

https://preview.redd.it/uviy7kzoncy91.png?width=270&format=png&auto=webp&s=4a71f3451bbcad90a01dee1efea431a0a38ddfd8
Intro: PH was formed in 2015, it mainly consists of the People’s Justice Party (PKR), the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and Party Amanah Negara (or just AMANAH). This coalition is not new actually, these parties were political alliances in the past under different names (Pakatan Rakyat in 2008, Barisan Alternatif in 1998), they are seen as the main opposition parties to BN for a long time. DAP was founded by former members of the Singaporean People’s Action Party (PAP) in 1965 (after Singapore got independent), many prominent leaders in DAP were Chinese and Indians, so it gave the public impression that they are more non-bumi-centric and also Singapore-looking. PKR was formed in 1998 by Anwar’s wife Wan Azizah, after a series of events that led to the sacking of Anwar by Mahathir, the then prime minister. AMANAH on the other hand was actually a redefinition of an existing party (Malaysia Workers’ Party), but they are better known as a party that broke off from the Islam-centric Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS) in 2015. Basically what happened was that PAS and DAP couldn’t see things eye to eye, so PAS left Pakatan Rakyat, while those former PAS members who still wanted to be in Pakatan Rakyat came out and formed AMANAH. PH briefly came into power in 2018, but they lost power in 2020 due to the betrayal of some politicians during what was called the ‘Langkah Sheraton’.
Why people vote for PH: People who vote for PH generally sees them as a chance for change, hoping that Malaysia would step out of its old system, its race-based politics and policies, and hope that Malaysia would move forward with more competent governance and ministers. The quality of politicians in PH are also higher in general, many of them have graduated from reputable universities around the world, and many PH ministers have actually made some significant changes during their rule. PH is also popular among the non-Malays because PH seemed like the only coalition that has significant non-Malay representation, unlike other Malay-centric coalitions like BN and those to be discussed below. Actually the bulk of the PH supporters are not really crazy about PH, instead PH just seemed like the lesser evil of all other coalitions in this list.
Why people don’t vote for PH: PH suffers from the fact that the party leader Anwar has quite a controversial background (he was alleged to be involved in some gay sex stuff, he seemed to be desperate to be prime minister, keep saying he has the numbers to form government but doesn’t, etc), so the more religious people don’t like him as a leader. DAP is also known to conservative Malay-Muslims as "communist" and "anti-Islam" because DAP is more vocal on issues concerning non-Malay rights. AMANAH on the other hand is not seen as a very prominent party: they are known to be a more progressive Islamic party, which doesn’t sit well with the more conservative PAS supporters. Many have also thought that "life has not really changed since PH took over", and "PH had too many infighting among themselves", so they lose support from these people.

PERIKATAN NASIONAL (PN)

https://preview.redd.it/vdtuf5erncy91.png?width=285&format=png&auto=webp&s=2ff09808685c8914b8bdb8cdcb840747e1e7aee9
Intro: PN was formed in 2020 after Langkah Sheraton, they mainly consist of Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (BERSATU), Parti Islam Se-Malaysia (PAS), Parti Gerakan Rakyat Malaysia (or just GERAKAN) and some other Sabah-centric parties. PAS is the oldest of them all, it was formed in 1945 and is the strongest Islam-centric party in Malaysia. GERAKAN was formed in 1968, it started as an alternative to MCA, but later became part of BN for many years; they are generally seen as a Chinese-dominant party that that ruled in Penang for many years. BERSATU was formed in 2016 by Muhyiddin Yassin after Najib Razak sacked him from his deputy prime minister position (he spoke out against Najib’s controversy), they are Malay-centric, seen as the ‘cleaner UMNO’ to many, but also seen as the ‘traitor party’ that led to the fall of the Pakatan Harapan government. PN was the government that was leading Malaysia since the pandemic began.
Why people vote for PN: As BERSATU is the main driver in this coalition, generally Malays who don’t want the corrupt UMNO but yet don’t want DAP find this as the best option. PN is mainly Malay and Muslim centric, so the more conservative and religious Malays like this option too. PN has also led Malaysia out of the pandemic, though without its problems, they generally didn’t destroy the country, so to many they seem a rather ok coalition to move the country forward.
Why people don’t vote for PN: As mentioned, PN is a very Malay-Muslim centric coalition, so far we have not heard of any significant policies beneficial towards non-Malays, so they have very little support from the Chinese and Indians. With PAS in the coalition, some non-Muslims are concerned that PAS may advocate for stronger and harsher Islamic rules to be implemented in the country (e.g. closing cinemas, hudud laws), so this scares away many as well. Although GERAKAN is there representing the non-Malays, they generally gain a rather weak support from them, since they haven’t really done any significant good thing in quite a while.

GERAKAN TANAH AIR (GTA)

https://preview.redd.it/u2rge6z2pcy91.jpg?width=294&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=8ef0db2c9edb1f50d807ad831981d2d5085182d7
Intro: GTA was formed just recently by Mahathir Mohamad, and it mainly consists of Parti Pejuang Tanah Air (PEJUANG), Parti Bumiputera Perkasa Malaysia (formerly known as PERKASA, now known as PUTRA) and a few lesser known political parties. PUTRA was formed in 2018 by Ibrahim Ali, and was generally seen as quite an extreme Malay-centric party. PEJUANG was formed in 2020 by Mahathir after he was kicked out from BERSATU (after Langkah Sheraton), and it is a Malay-centric party similar to BERSATU and UMNO. GTA’s purpose isn’t really clear, but to the public it just seems to be there to fight against BN.
Why people vote for GTA: GTA has Mahathir as its leader, which is good news to Mahathir fans. It is undoubted that Mahathir has done many good things for Malaysia in the past, so some are still believers that he will be able to save the country from the current mess.
Why people don’t vote for GTA: Mahathir is already 97 years old, many feel that he should just retire and not continue to lead a country. Some PH supporters also say that it is his fault that PH fell apart, so they see this coalition as a ‘traitor’ to the country as well. Other weaknesses of GTA include the fact that they are there to dilute BN, PN and PH votes; the other parties relatively unknown; they are not strong enough to form a government on their own; the controversial Ibrahim Ali (“don’t talk SHTI!”); and they do not have any non-Muslim representation.

MALAYSIAN UNITED DEMOCRATIC ALLIANCE (MUDA)

https://preview.redd.it/07rgagf6ocy91.png?width=225&format=png&auto=webp&s=c905055ddc65ae4b3c39b3e14568014e9a8b61a3
Intro: MUDA is a youth-centric party formed by Syed Saddiq in 2020, after he was kicked-out by BERSATU. Generally MUDA is still very new, so their impact in the Malaysian political arena is still yet to be seen.
Why people vote for MUDA: MUDA is the only youth-centric party, so voting for them implies a support for more younger generation involvement in politics. MUDA is also currently a coalition partner of PH, so a support for MUDA will be a support for PH.
Why people don’t vote for MUDA: MUDA is a relatively young party, with a younger demographic as their leadership means that they lack the experience of other political parties in terms of decision making, resources, connections and planning. That is probably what led to the scandal of Syed Saddiq on the misappropriation of funds.

PARTI WARISAN (WARISAN)

https://preview.redd.it/qztyj8z9ocy91.png?width=200&format=png&auto=webp&s=f0fbcc1f5b0025e3f950fb539e89eb7b16a612a7
Intro: WARISAN was formed by Shafie Apdal in 2016, after Najib has removed him from his cabinet (he probably voiced out against Najib’s corruption at that time, just like Muhyiddin). WARISAN was formerly a Sabah-centric party and an ally to PH, but in the current election they have decided to run solo and also expanded their reach to West Malaysia as well. At this point, WARISAN’s presence in West Malaysia is generally side-lined by the big battle between BN vs PN vs PH.
Why people vote for WARISAN: WARISAN used to be a coalition partner of PH, so they have similar values to PH, therefore acting as a good alternative to PH. They are also a good alternative against Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) in terms of a Sabah-centric party selection. Some WARISAN voters are just supporters of Shafie Apdal.
Why people don’t vote for WARISAN: WARISAN is currently not a coalition partner of PH, which means that they may just end up diluting the votes against the big battle between BN, PN and PH, so this is not a good option for those who are focused on ousting BN/PN/PH. WARISAN is also currently not big enough to make a difference in West Malaysia, and it is also unsure who do they side with in the end. For Sabah voters, WARISAN was also blamed for having a state election that caused another covid-19 wave in 2020.

GABUNGAN PARTI SARAWAK (GPS)

https://preview.redd.it/2qxqtdbkocy91.png?width=287&format=png&auto=webp&s=af453e3b7cacca869f5c8133afca42895d813afb
Intro: GPS was formed in 2018 after Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) and Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) left BN. Essentially they are just the same people governing Sarawak since the past, just that they are no longer under BN. GPS focuses on Sarawak’s state interests and rights based on the Malaysia Agreement.
Why people vote for GPS: the people who vote for GPS are those who don’t see any big problem with their governance; and since they are now no longer under BN, they can be more vocal against any discrimination against Sarawak, so this attracts fellow native Sarawakians as well.
Why people don’t vote for GPS: Supporting GPS may imply supporting BN or PN, because they were coalition partners with them previously, and may continue to do so. So voters who prefer PH to be the central government will vote against them instead, at least for the national elections. Some also say that the current Sarawak government is corrupted, and would like to see a new government for a change.

GABUNGAN RAKYAT SABAH (GRS)

https://preview.redd.it/8jkaauynocy91.jpg?width=375&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=ba5c8ed65bca5a2905fd3405b180593046471f77
Intro: GRS was officially registered in 2022, it is a coalition between BERSATU Sabah, Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS), Sabah Progressive Party (SAPP), Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) and United Sabah National Organisation (USNO); it is also allied by other BN and PN parties as well. This is an interesting coalition as it does not seem to follow the coalition rules of West Malaysia and is doing its own thing. But generally, GRS acts as the main competitors of PH and GTA in Sabah.
Why people vote for GRS: Similar to GPS, GRS is state-centric, so they are more inward looking towards issues that will benefit the Sabah people as a whole. GRS is also made up of the usual people governing Sabah in the past, so voting for GRS means stability and not expecting radical changes.
Why people don’t vote for GRS: Similar to GPS, GRS was also coalition partners with BN or PN, in fact a mix of both, so voting for GRS implies supporting BN or PN on a national level. So those who do not want BN or PN to govern the country will definitely vote against GRS, at least on a national level.

INDEPENDENT CANDIDATES

Intro: these are just people who are not affiliated to any political party and would like to run for election. Some of them were formerly from a certain political party, but decided to run as an independent after not being given a seat by their party leaders.
Why people vote for independent candidates: some of these candidates are just well-known among the locals, might be some important figure in the business or education arena in their district, so they are supported for that. Some voters of independent candidates are people who believe that you should vote for the person, and not the party.
Why people don’t vote for independent candidates: independent candidates can enter support literally any party after they got elected, so voting for them may result in unexpected results. Independent candidates also dilute the votes of the big BN vs PN vs PH battle, so people who don’t vote for them usually have nothing against them, they just want to focus on ousting a certain party / supporting a certain party for the government.

CLOSING REMARKS

There are actually plenty of resources online that you can find on the good and bad of each parties, so please feel free to read through them. If you need to talk to someone about it, you can always start with a discussion with your parents, your cousins or friends. But always remember that most political discussions can be biased, emotional and subjective, so read every piece of analysis with a pinch of salt, and always cross-check with the evidence.
Happy voting, and I wish you all the best! :)
Acknowledgement: thanks to u/DerpyPoint for pointing out that the anti hopping law in place now does not allow even independent candidates to join another party after the election, although they could still ally with any party, so it still gives rise to unexpected results.
