2024.05.20 23:26 mandolorachu Is my wood safe?

Is my wood safe?
So I have finally found some free time again, and plan to get back into woodworking. I'm starting off simple with an endgrain cutting board but I wanted to make sure that the lumber is safe to use.
I currently have Acacia, Batu, Red Ironwood, and some Purple Heart. I also possibly have Larch or it is old growth Douglas Fir. As far as I'm aware, the Fir isn't really food safe, but Larch is?
As far as the Acacia and Batu, they have a finish already on it. The Acacia was a prefinished slab but for an office renovation, and the Batu was a tongue and groove soffit. How far do I need to sand/cut/plane these down to remove the stain and finish?
With the Acacia, the slab (not pictured) I have is 27" x34" x 1¾". It is slightly wavy and the thickness varies from ⅛ so I have to plane it down smooth anyways. From a sidecar though, it shows maybe 1/32" has the finish on it. I planned on taking at least ⅛ from both sides anyways leaving me a slab 1 ½ thick.
The Batu shows maybe even less of the stain on the surface. Maybe 1/64"?
Will either of these be suitable for use? Will any of the lumber be suitable for food use? I do plan on getting more wood, most likely cherry and black walnut as well, so if I need to buy all new wood, I can. Thanks for any help.

2024.05.20 12:19 Trensocialist What are your thoughts on Douglas Campbell's rereading of Romans to reject "Justification by Faith" theory? Long read skip to the end for gist

I'm breaking my reddit fast because I want yalls opinion on someone.
I often read Protestant works particularly on the Pauline corpus because they are usually the only ones seriously engaging in Pauline scholarship. N.T. Wright was formative in my journey to Orthodoxy, despite being Anglican, because his reading of Paul was against the usual Protestant narrative of "God sent Jesus to die to save you from his wrath so you can go to Heaven when you die."
Into to Douglas Campbell. Campbell is arguing in 2 directions. His main argument is against what he calls Justification Theory and that's the primary Protestant and Roman Catholic reading of St. Paul. Here is a good summary of what he's talking about. The gist is that Justification theory teaches that all humans have a natural revelation about God that they should worship him and suppress this making them without excuse and therefore objects of Gods wrath and punishment. They choose to justify themselves based on their moral deeds, but their indwelling corruption of original sin makes this impossible. Therefore, Christ came to live a perfect life and died to take the full wrath of God onto himself, and thus, once someone recognizes they are a hopeless sinner, has faith in Jesus who imputes his legal righteousness onto the believer and forgives their sins.
Campbell argues this is 1. Antisemitic as is makes the quintessential "sinner" and "legalist" a Jew 2. An incoherent picture of humanity that often does not have any special natural revelation of a personal monotheistic God 3. A poor representation of a loving God who is first and foremost a God of retributive punishment that requires punitive wrath to be appeased and 4. A denial of St. Paul's actual Gospel which is an announcement of the defeat of death and corruption and our current participation in a new existence (he doesn't use the term Theosis but it's clear that's what he's referring to).
The second line of argument is against the New Perspective on Paul. Many modern theologians have argued against this Justification Theory (JT) because of the insights of scholars like EP Sanders. Sanders proved that the dominant reading of St. Paul is based on an understanding of Jews that simply cannot fit into the 2nd Temple Judaism of St. Paul's day. It turns out, Jews then WERENT primarily legalists trying to justify themselves against a God who was wrathful, but considered their covenental relationship one of love and forgiveness and participation. Scholars like Dunn and Wright who have argued for a New Perspective on Pahl have reinterpreted St. Paul to account for this new perspective on Judaism. Campbell argues their arguments are very good, but still ultimately fail, because despite their extended scope, still fall into JT where the sins of Israel place them in a position of punitive judgment and retributive wrath that needs to be mitigated by killing Jesus.
And I must confess, personally, as an Orthodox universalist, and someone who is Leftist, this reading concerns me. Many Orthodox theologians I have read reject Penal Substitutionary Atonement for these reasons, seeing an Anselmian innovation into the faith. Yet when I read commentaries on Romans by (generously, very "conservative" clergy) Frs Reardon or Farley, when I'm reading Romans 1-5, their reading is basically the exact same as the old school Protestants. That is, we all suppress natural revelation and that makes us objects of punitive wrath or passive wrath, but objects of wrath either way and that wrath needs to be mitigated by killing Jesus. In other words, the Orthodox commentaries I've read dont sound too different from a Protestant or at best Roman Catholic reading.
GIST:
Campbell gets around this by reinterpreting Romans 1-3 as a Dialogue between St. Paul and his Jewish Christian opponents who are Pro "works of the Law" (mainly ethnic customs such as circumcision and Kosher) and anti Gentile Christians. Here is an example how he rereads Romans. You'd have to read his 1000+ page books to see how exactly he divvies up the chapters, but this is the gist.
I write all of this because I'm aware many of you might not be acqainted with the scholarship in Pauline studies as they are mostly between Protestants, and that these ideas are on a spectrum of Orthodoxy. I'm curious as to your thoughts on Campbell's rejection of JT and MORE IMPORTANTLY on his rereading of Romans which is what I'm actuay interested in your thoughts on. I'm wondering if anyone has also felt like some "Orthodox" readings of key texts felt similar to their Protestant backgrounds and how "Orthodox" this new reading could be. My concern is that, to my knowledge, no Church Father read Romans this way. Nevertheless, in reading it this way, it seems to be more consistent with a theology of a non-retributive God and a gospel of apocalyptic announcement (Defeat of spiritual powers and Death) and participation (theosis) as well as emphasizing God's unconditional love. I'm struggling at the novelty of the interpretation but at the same time, the argument is very convincing to me! I'd love your thoughts and I apologize for the length.

Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1
Reviews
The Hollywood Reporter:
Working from a discursive screenplay he co-wrote with Jon Baird, Costner is not at his best as a director with this kind of multi-branched narrative. He struggles to keep all the story’s plates spinning, as characters are sidelined and resurface with too little connective tissue.
Deadline:
For Costner, this is an impressive beginning, with the promise of more to come.
Variety:
There’s a hallowed place in cinema for multi-character dramas. But “Horizon,” simply put, doesn’t feel like a movie. It feels like the seedbed for a miniseries. Much of what happens is wispy and not very forceful; the film doesn’t build in impact, and it seldom seems to aim in a clear direction.
The Telegraph (4/5):
The film is earnest yet hopeful, with crisply drawn characters - but perhaps its full grandeur won’t be fully realised until part two.
Total Film (4/5):
A rigorous and handsome drama, finely hewn by Costner and his cast, this is an absorbing ride into the Old West.
Screen Daily:
Beautifully shot, with a deft command of period detail and a starry ensemble cast, Costner’s Civil-war set epic offers an old-fashioned celebration of the pioneer spirit – and a clutch of storylines that never quite have time to engage before the film moves on.
The Playlist (C-):
Despite the shootouts, some epic vistas (frankly, not as much as you’d expect), and a few fleeting moments of genuine tension, it all feels flat.
Indiewire (C-):
These aren’t characters so much as the spokes of a plot in human form, each of their storylines moving as if being pulled by horses across the entire span of the American West.
The Guardian (2/5):
In some ways, Horizon reminded me of Costner’s 2003 western Open Range, but that had a much more interesting performance from Costner and first-rate support from Robert Duvall and Michael Gambon. The acting here is far less impressive, and less directed. There isn’t much on the horizon here
Collider (4/10):
Credit where credit is due, Kevin Costner has made what is essentially a three-hour prologue into something that is occasionally moderately entertaining. However, just as often, Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 woefully wanders every which way.
The Daily Beast (Skip This):
The biggest problem with Horizon is that, even with its lengthy running time, Costner has only scratched the surface of the “saga” he’s trying to tell. There is no arc to what happens, just the seemingly unending introduction of characters.
Vanity Fair:
At least Horizon accomplishes one staggering feat: it makes one wonder if we were maybe a little too hard on The Postman.
Synopsis:
In the great tradition of Warner Bros. Pictures’ iconic Westerns, “Horizon: An American Saga” explores the lure of the Old West and how it was won—and lost—through the blood, sweat and tears of many. Spanning the four years of the Civil War, from 1861 to 1865, Costner’s ambitious cinematic adventure will take audiences on an emotional journey across a country at war with itself, experienced through the lens of families, friends and foes all attempting to discover what it truly means to be the United States of America.

2024.05.18 20:51 novar41 Why was the DC-8 seating six abreast and the DC-9 only five?

I seen a lot of pictures of the Douglas DC-8 where it has lots of seats and it’s across seating. I’ve been on plenty of DC-9 and I’ve never seen that. I thought they all had the “same” fuselage diameter.

I must say this film has been nothing but perplexing /pos. I just find it amusing that this feels like this could’ve been Oppenheimer’s long lost quirky relative 😭 I find the character design of the alien funny too as it could’ve been someone’s trypophobic nightmare 😭
Anyways, I read some reviews this centered around death and grief. How we should be able to grow around absence.
Read some reviews too that this is the Wes Anderson has Wes Anderson-ed ever. I mean, if Tiktok were to try to dupe me up with my style, I, too, would also unleash the quirkiest work ever out of spite /j
let me know your thoughts as well! 👽

Chapter 39
Subject: Rear Admiral Fredrick Kennedy
Species: Knuknu
Description: Avian humanoid, non-prehensile tail. 5'10" (1.7 m) avg height. 84 lbs (38 kg) avg weight. 342 year life expectancy.
Ship: USSS Gaping Maw
Location: Unknown

"Damage report," I said.
"Don't have the full yet. From what we've noticed so far, we took a couple of knocks to the armor but all the important stuff is fully functional. Shields are recharging now, sir," Captain Blavro reported. "We were fortunate that..."
The captain trailed off and absentmindedly nibbled on the back of his claws. A habitual cleaning ritual that alumari do when they're stressed. The thought he bear to finish is that we were fortunate that the Carnage took the hits for us, and then its wreckage was able to provide us cover. If it weren't for that, we would have been destroyed.
"Sir, Fleet Leader Oyan is ordering thirty minutes for 'R&R'," Smith said. "Kind of an odd time..."
"He means reinforce and replacement," Omega clarified.
"Understood," I said. "Omega, take over the stations. Everyone else, grab a drink, hit the head, and be back here in twenty minutes."
"Aye, sir," Omega said.
I watched as the crew vacated the bridge, and once the last of them left I leaned back in my chair and exhaled fully for the first time in what felt like eternity. Once I let my guard down, the shakes took over. We had almost died. The other two dreadnoughts were destroyed. It was only by sheer luck that we hadn't been. If we had been on the other side of the Carnage... Or if we hadn't been able to protect ourselves with its corpse...
"Fuck," I whispered, rubbing my beak to sooth myself.
"You should take some time, as well," Omega said.
"By the time I make it to my quarters, I'll have to immediately turn around," I joked.
"You don't need to go all the way to your quarters to-"
"Omega," I interrupted. "I will be fine. This is not my first close call, and I doubt that it will be my last. I understand the reason for your concern, but I am fit to carry on the mission."
"My concern isn't limited to your usefulness," the AI said calmly. "But even if it were, you're not looking at the big picture. Even if you're fit for this mission, what of the next? And when you finally return home? Treating PTSD is intensive and costly. It can be even more costly when left untreated. So it's in everyone's best interest to make sure those around them are mentally fit."
"Touching," I chuckled dryly. "Now leave me be."
"So be it."
Silence filled the bridge, and I let my mind wander. Both ships had managed to launch their escape pods, but there's no doubt that there were still crew aboard when the ships broke apart. We won't know the full scope of the tragedy until much later, though. Long after our next encounter with the MPPs.
They could easily have been the ones wondering about us. I'd almost lost my ship, my crew, and my life. The universe, through machinations unknowable, had seen fit to spare us and take them instead. Why, though? Surely there were people more deserving of life who died aboard the Carnage and the Tip of the Tip. Does it really just come down to luck?
My ruminations only seemed to last for a few moments before my crew started trickling back into the bridge. I adjusted myself and put on an air of stoicism for them, but none of them were looking at me. They all appeared to be wrapped up in their own contemplations. Except for Commander Stevens, who approached me with a mug in hand.
"Here, sir," he said, offering me the mug. "Probably good to have some coffee while we have the chance."
"I appreciate the sentiment, commander," I smiled. "However, knuknu are allergic to caffeine."
"Which is why I brought you some decaf, sir."
"Now you're talkin'," I said as I greedily grabbed the mug from him. "Thanks, Stevens."
"No problem, sir."
The commander returned to his station as I took a sip of the perfectly heated ambrosia. I am told that decaffeinated coffee isn't as good as regular coffee, but it's still amazing. Hell, my whole species loves the smell and taste of coffee, sometimes to an unhealthy degree. Something we actually have in common with humans.
The bean brew had actually caused a diplomatic incident when the knuknu and humans began first contact meetings. One of the human diplomats had offered the beverage to a knuknu diplomat without knowing the effects that caffeine has on avian physiology. Thankfully, the knuknu diplomat survived and the human diplomat was able to effectively explain that the beverage was frequently consumed by humans and not considered poisonous.
Neither side had any regulations specifically regarding food and drink, which had been an oversight caused by someone thinking other people had common sense. This incident changed that, and gave both the knuknu and humans a friendly jab at one another. Imagine being dumb enough to feed aliens a toxin at first contact and imagine being weak enough that caffeine can kill you. Ironically, this awkward and nearly fatal incident deepened the relations between our peoples.
"Sir, the damage to our armor has been repaired, and some... uh... lights have been replaced as well," Blavro said.
"Lights?" I asked.
"Yes, sir. Apparently, there was some arcing from the Ultra-MAC that went in an unexpected direction due to an attractant rod getting knocked loose. The rod's been replaced too."
"Are we green?"
"Yes, sir."
"Good. Did we suffer any casualties?"
"Only one, sir. Ensign Berulla from engineering suffered a minor concussion. He was under a console when we took a hard hit and got a good smack. He's expected to make a full recovery in five minutes."
I chuckled. Concussed engineers were honestly the best one could hope for in such circumstances. Skull knocks, shocks, and broken fingers are par for the course among the field. It's a damn good thing for them that we have great health care.
"Very good, captain. Get us in formation and charge the FTLD."
Captain Blavro began maneuvering into position as I leaned back in my chair, continuing to enjoy my coffee. It's amazing what a cup of the good stuff can do for one's spirits.
"The USSS Carnage and the USSS Tip of the Tip are being replaced by the USSS Clenched Gauntlet and the USSS..." Blavro stopped for a moment and chuckled. "The USSS Hole Puncher. Even I get that one."
Commander Stevens let out an exaggerated sigh, which made Blavro laugh.
"It's only dirty if you make it dirty," I said, placing my now empty mug in the disposal unit built into the side of my chair. "As a matter of fact, I believe you'd be hard pressed to find a more accurate description for an Ultra-MAC."
"I get where you're coming from, sir, but if we aren't careful these names are gonna corrupt our poor, innocent captain here," Stevens said. "Next thing you know, he'll be reading the Alumari Renegade along with the rest of the degenerates."
Blavro stopped laughing and let out a disgusted click, "I'd never stoop so low. The release of that series has caused more damage to human-alumari relations than any other event in our shared history."
"Really?" Stevens asked.
"Yes. How would you feel if an alumari released a series that not only butchered human history and culture, but also made several vastly incorrect assumptions about your anatomy? Now take that feeling, and add the fact that it's an interplanetary best seller."
"Are we ready to jump, yet?" I interrupted.
"Y-yes, sir," Blavro said nervously.
"Good. Engage when we get the order."
There's nothing wrong with a little levity but the conversation had been veering dangerously close to politics, and I have a hard rule against the discussion of such on my bridge. While it's true that the Alumari Renegade and its many sequels had been considered an insult by many alumari, they're not exactly innocent of cultural insensitivity either. Nobody is, for that matter. Both the alumari and the gont had presented painted eggs to the knuknu as first contact gifts, completely ignorant of the implications of such a gift.
"Entering warp, sir," Blavro reported.
"Excellent. Same as before, start the charging sequence first, then find a firing solution," I ordered.
"Aye aye, sir," Commander Horvu said.
"How many MPPs are we expecting?" I asked.
"Just one, sir," Stevens answered.
I nodded. Just one MPP wouldn't be so bad. Unless it received reinforcements, of course. Hopefully, our reinforcements will be a little quicker on the draw if that turns out to be the case. I took a deep breath and let it out slowly, steeling my nerves for the upcoming fight.
"Leaving warp, sir," Blavro said.
I turned my attention to the tac-map as we left subspace, and my eyes widened. There was a simply extraordinary amount of Omni-Union ships in this system. Far more than we'd encountered so far. All of this, just for one MPP and a few stations?
"Horvu, keep at least four MACs targeting the nearest OU ships and have the rest target the MPP's MACs," I ordered. "Fire at will."
"Aye aye, sir."
The charge indicator for our Ultra-MAC began to increase as our shield indicator began to decrease. Our shield's decline was much slower than it had been previously, indicating that the MPP was trying to hit all three of us at once. Perhaps it noticed that destroying us one at a time wouldn't work.
I waited patiently, watching our shells and ships destroy Omni-Union vessels with ruthless efficiency. How many more would we have to destroy? Will they give up, or will we have to hunt down and destroy every last one of them? Do they fear extinction? Are they even capable of understanding what death is?
I opened fleetcomm and checked our total casualties. Millions of ships lost on both sides of the conflict so far. This figure represented millions of people, as well. I don't even know how many VI are aboard an OU ship. All lost, and for what? We don't even know what this is all about.
"The MPP has stopped firing, sir," Blavro reported.
"Good job, Omega," I said with a laugh.
"Sir, I'm locked out of my console," Horvu said with panic tainting his normally stoic voice.
"Holy shit," Stevens exclaimed. "Everyone has stopped firing! Even the OU!"
"Omega? What the hell is going on?" I demanded.
"Sit tight, Admiral," Omega's voice sounded over the intercom. "Things just got interesting."
"Interesting? Interesting HOW?" I shouted.
"The MPP that we've just run into is designated Mobile Prime Platform One," the AI explained. "And I am currently negotiating a cease-fire."

President La Follette would announce a major reorganization of cabinet departments following his 1951 impeachment, uniting the Air Force, Navy, War, and State Departments into one grand “Department of Peace,” despite opposition from both military leadership and Secretary of State MacArthur, who would depart from the Administration at the commencement of 1952 and be replaced by Farmer-Labor doyen Clarence Dill. The President has framed the move as embodying the national seal of an eagle carrying both arrows and an olive branch, while promoting centralization to improve efficiency while avoiding involving the United States in entangling alliances, an effort that has led to the end of the effort to unite American allies on both sides of the Pacific into a mutual defense pact. First Lady Isen La Follette, personally notably introverted, has been brought before the public as the chief public campaigner for the Department of Peace.
With the centralization of foreign and military policy in full swing at the executive level despite the opposition of Congress, the spring of 1952 would see a second round of mass centralization, with longtime ally Ralph Immell appointed as the head of a new Department of Production, devised by Texas’s Lyndon B. Johnson, to supervise the old Treasury, Interior, Energy, Agriculture, Labor, and Science and Technology Departments, while Dr. Francois Duvalier has been appointed to lead the centralization of the Justice, Health, Education, and Post Office Departments into a united Department of Prosperity and Human Services, commonly referred to only by the former. As in the case of the Department of Peace, the former departments are slated to remain at a sub-cabinet level, and the efforts of opposition forces have successfully left the proposed integrations largely on paper for the time being.
On the level of sub-cabinet departments, the Bureau of Investigation has been merged with the Office of Strategic Services to form the National Security Agency (NSA), an intelligence agency combining the foreign and domestic. Meanwhile, an executive order would begin the National Aeronautics and Space Administration with former President Charles Lindbergh appointed as its first head, however, Lindbergh would soon be dismissed as a part of the executive’s compromise with congress’s impeachers, with businessman Howard Hughes taking his place.

Opposition Representative Richard Nixon shakes hands with Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie during the Emperor's visit to the United States, where President La Follette would emphasize American support for non-communist anti-colonial movements.
Foreign Policy:
-President La Follette has found rare common ground with the opposition on matters of foreign policy towards the Soviet Union, echoing Arthur Vandenberg’s declaration that “politics ends at the water’s edge.” The Administration has secured funding for the rebuilding of Indonesia, the Philippines, Japan, and Korea under social democratic anti-communist governments, with President La Follette describing the initiatives as building an “iron curtain” against communism.
-President La Follette’s term would see the death of two of the world’s premier foreign leaders: Marshall Philippe Petain of France and Chinese General Feng Yuxiang. President La Follette would visit Paris in 1951 for the funeral of Petain after nearly four decades in power, having hailed the French publicly as future allies in the battle with communism. Yet, already suspicious of the new government of Petain protege Charles De Gaulle after the leaking of America’s role in Smedley Butler’s assassination by Ambassador Gaston-Henry Haye, La Follette would find himself increasingly disenchanted with the French, with private reports indicating his horror at the mass deportation of Flemish, Germans, and Catalans into the French Congo from areas in Europe newly annexed into France.
-However, the President would nonetheless side with the French-supported Roman Legion rebelling against Greece in 1951, marking the creation of the Republic of the Pindus as the first state for the Aromanian people in world history. However, the new state has been accused of engaging in the ethnic cleansing of the Greek population.
-Meanwhile, touring China after the death of Feng Yuxiang, La Follette would become increasingly worried about the possible alignment of the nation towards the Soviet Union and controversially refuse to return the island of Taiwan to China until the election of a successor to Feng. With Communist leader Zhou Enlai rising in popularity and an election planned, American support would be thrown behind former warlord Yan Xishan, who would be selected President by the National Assembly in January of 1951 and promptly announce an indefinite delay on elections. Despite rising tensions with China’s Bolshevik-backed Communist Party, La Follette would sign a treaty of return in February of 1952 relinquishing Taiwan to Chinese control. However, after six decades of intense Japanization under colonial authorities, Taiwan has found itself culturally isolated from the rest of China, speaking almost entirely Japanese and Hokkien rather than Mandarin.
-A similar issue has emerged on the formerly Japanese territories of Sakhalin and the Kuril Islands. Owing to their close location to the Soviet Union, La Follette has authorized it as the site of dozens of American nuclear tests throughout his term and refused to cede sovereignty, with China, Japan, and Russia all harboring alternate claims to the islands.
-The President has impounded funds from the 1950 and 1951 budgets passed by Congress to distribute for the reconstruction of American allies and occupied regions in the Third Pacific War, enacting the MacArthur Plan without the authorization of Congress and repeating to Chinese Premier Yan Xishan his famous remark that “vermin are infesting and polluting democratic organizations and the government itself.”
-Working with the Latin American and East Asian nations in the American sphere of influence in the aftermath of the Franco-British Conflict, the President has moved the United States into the new Parliament of Nations headquartered in Rome, sending New Hampshire Progressive Senator Robert P. Bass as the first United States Representative to the largely powerless global body intended to facilitate global cooperation. Notably, however, the La Follette Administration has resisted efforts to include communist-aligned nations into the fold despite the membership of many French-aligned authoritarian regimes and absolute monarchies such as the Ethiopian Empire or the Caliphate.
-1951 would see the formalization of the Treaty of San Diego, officially ending the United States occupation of Japan, and with it La Follette's rule by decree of the islands, while maintaining an American military presence on the island chain and transferring to American control the Ryukyu Islands, Iwo Jima, Samoa, and the Japanese stake in the Nicaraguan Canal shared with Argentina, where former Milford W. Howard associate Harold Lord Varney has been appointed as High Commissioner.
-President La Follette held a summit with Ethiopian Emperor Haile Selassie, and Madagascar Prime Minister Joseph Raseta in 1951 to commemorate the longstanding American support for independent nations in Africa, hosting, among others, independence activists Seretse Khama of Botswana, Jomo Kenyatta of Kenya, and Hastings Banda of Nyasaland. Further, American jazz artist Andy Razaf has taken the throne as King of Madagascar following the lack of an heir apparent to deceased Queen Marie-Louise, however, unfamiliar with the island of his ancestors, the newly-crowned Andriamanantena I has been sidelined by Prime Minister Raseta.
-With rumors of Lazar Kaganovich planning Bolshevik expansion into Central Asia abounding, President La Follette and Secretary of Peace Dill would issue a joint statement in January of 1952 promising American opposition “by any means necessary” to “one more inch” of Bolshevik expansion, with Dill describing Kaganovich’s policy towards France and the United States as “trying to play both sides against the middle.

Destiny launches off the coast of Puerto Rico, inaugurating a new era in human history,
Domestic Policy:
-”Our attainments in space are a major element in the competition between the Soviet system and our own, they are part of the battle,” so would declare James E. Webb, Deputy Administrator of NASA, on October 4th, 1951, mere weeks after the failure of the impeachment of President La Follette, as he, former President Lindbergh, and gasping crowds of onlookers watched Destiny take flight, the first manmade satellite in human history to orbit the Earth. President La Follette would tout the achievement as the administration having begun the conquest of “the final frontier.”
-Working with Japanese scientists in the aftermath of the occupation, space policy has reached the fore as La Follette launches an aggressive series of follow-up satellites, beginning with Lewis and Clark and most recently including Stagecoach. However, rumors hold that the French have begun construction on their own site for space rocket launches.
-Staring down the barrel of Speaker Joseph McCarthy’s aggression and Senator Estes Kefauver’s investigation into the assassination of Smedley Butler, La Follette turned away from Congress in 1949 to fulfill his promise to “win the peace.” Acting first in April of 1949 shortly after the arrest of John L. Lewis, La Follette would issue Executive Orders 15092 and 15093, authorizing the building of an interstate highway system and national system of hydroelectric plants to be overseen by General Lucius D. Clay and the Army Corps of Engineers under the supervision of the Department of the Interior for the former and Department of Science and Technology for the latter, while authorizing the creation of a new Department of Energy, operating entirely on impounded funds and largely focusing on research on the utilization of nuclear energy.
-In the latter effort, the President has found the support of prominent opposition financier Lewis Strauss, who has nonetheless argued that the development of nuclear energy is hampered by New State bureaucratic centralization.
-Opposition politician Joseph Alioto has criticized the interstate highway system, pointing to the funding of La Follette’s campaign by the Firestone Tire Company and arguing that road dependent companies have colluded to impede the further expansion of rail infrastructure.
-Most controversially would be Executive Order 15097, issued in June of 1951 and seen as largely the brainchild of Secretary of the Treasury Rexford Tugwell, declaring the complete and total nationalization of the healthcare industry and authorizing the establishment of a National Healthcare Service (NHS) in the United States under the Department of Health. Although implementation has been plagued by legal challenges and billions in funding from healthcare providers to opposition candidates, the President has utilized impounded funds to subsidize healthcare for the elderly and impoverished.
-Executive Order 15102 in December of 1951 would establish under the Department of Labor an employers’ syndicate led by former General Electric CEO Gerald Swope called the Business Council, leading to denunciations from across Farmer-Labor despite the low participation in the attempted employers’ union.
-However, the 1946 executive orders declaring a national moratoria on the payment of mortgages and enacting wage and price controls were ended soon after the 1948 election.
-In the face of a rapidly growing economy, La Follette has worked with new Federal Reserve Chairman Bernard Baruch to digress on the expansionist monetary policy that characterized his first term, with interest rates quadrupling to 15% in an effort that has successfully brought inflation from 13% to a mere 3% annually. Unemployment has fallen to 3.2% as the GDP as a whole has grown nearly 9% over La Follette’s second term, an economic boom fueled by mass exportation to Europe and newly decolonized nations elsewhere. While the President has continued to voice support for the nationalization of the Federal Reserve, the issue has remained on the backburner.
-An executive order in January of 1952 has set the new national minimum wage to $7.00 an hour from a previous $3.25, causing mass business outcry despite the President’s argument that the increase is necessary to guarantee a “living wage” after post-war inflation. The Department of Justice has been authorized to prosecute offenders, however, critics have argued that businesses aligned with the President’s political opposition have been unfairly targeted.
-Rufus B. von KleinSmid of the Un-American Activities Board, appointed by the President to monitor journalism for seditious content, would attempt to suppress the release of an account by actress Frances Farmer of her forced confinement to a mental institution in 1948, where she was sterilized under La Follette’s Executive Order 14768 from 1946, authorizing the mass sterilization of the mentally ill and those with “criminal tendencies.” Further investigations into the ramifications of the order have led to staggering revelations of up to 200,000 sterilizations performed annually since 1946, largely under duress, on Americans in prison and mental institutions as well as former criminals. The President has defended the policy while authorizing a Department of Justice investigation into abuses by low level doctors.
-The President would support the prosecution of a half dozen prison wardens accused of citing Executive Order 14767, establishing cooperatives for prisoners to work without pay on natural beautification projects, to turn prisoners into de facto slave laborers working 18 hour shifts as contract labor on farms. While the President has argued that the system itself has brought boons to the environment and American agriculture, critics have claimed that abuse remains widespread.
-While delaying and, in some cases, entirely pausing the implementation of his executive orders in the wake of the promises of moderation amidst the impeachment trial that rescued his presidency from the brink of collapse, fascist Blackshirts and radical Mormon Destroying Angels have become increasingly violent in the months since impeachment, with headlines telling tales of opposition presses raided and armed men watching poll stations. Another conspiracy theory has held that the death of Committee for the Preservation of the Republic chairman Thomas Schall in a motor accident over the winter of 1951 was the result of an intentional Blackshirt hit-and-run.
-While many have blamed the fiery speeches of Vice President Musmanno for encouraging Blackshirts, President La Follette and his brother in the Senate have fiercely denounced all violence on behalf of their movement, appealing to supporters for calm as they call for the speedy prosecution of the allegedly Blackshirt bombthrowers that took the life of elderly comedian Will Rogers. Nonetheless, fear of political violence has led to the cancellation of the 1952 Progressive-Federalist presidential primary in favor of a convention held in tandem with the Liberty League under the auspices of the Committee for the Preservation of the Republic.
-Meanwhile, Washington Senate candidate Marion Zioncheck would throw himself off a building while campaigning to succeed Clarence Dill. In a coma, Zioncheck’s supporters have accused the administration alternately of reigniting his documented mental health issues and being behind the attempted murder themselves.
-September 14, 1951, the height of Blackshirt violence in Philadelphia, St. Louis, and New York City, has been labeled the “Knight of the Long Knives” by opposition critic Styles Bridges. Vice President Musmanno has stood alone in the administration in defending the actions publicly despite condemnation from President La Follette that has carried into the authorization of NSA prosecutions of Blackshirt perpetrators. Representative Richard Nixon, the lead impeachment manager in the La Follette trial, has credited J. Edgar Hoover with the investigations rather than La Follette and accused the administration of only condoning them under pressure from his brother.
-”People of America, wake up!” The last words of House Minority Leader Eduardo Chibas, broadcast into a million homes seconds before his suicide on live radio, has fueled the creation of local opposition organizing groups calling themselves “Wide-Awakes” and aiming to bridge opposition interests against the La Follette Administration.
-The President has made a half a dozen speeches across the nation under the banner of his loyal National Progressives of America calling for the ratification of a 20th Amendment to shift to the president the powers of Congress, restricting the republic’s legislative branch to a mere veto power, while arguing that the need for a strong legislature would be replaced with a 21st Amendment establishing a process for national referendums. Although not passed by Congress, several state legislatures, including those of Alabama and Washington, have passed resolutions indicating a willingness to ratify the amendment.
-The President further floated the concept of reforming the legislature into a “Chamber of Corporations” balancing representatives from the General Trades Union and Business Council.
-With the arrest of CIO leaders John L. Lewis and Tony Boyle, leadership of the nation’s chief opposition union has fallen to Walter Reuther and Jimmy Hoffa, representing the left and right of the organization. With widespread prosecutions against members and supporters such as Fulgencio Batista, however, Reuther and Hoffa have found themselves fighting to prevent the CIO’s collapse. Nonetheless, the CIO would hold a 1950 celebration of the life of former Vice President Lena Morrow Lewis, with President Alf Landon hailing her role in the opposition and using the funeral as a means to rally anti-La Follette sentiment.
-Following a career in national politics spanning nearly seven decades, former President William Randolph Hearst would stop the presses for a final time on August 14th of 1951, passing away at the age of 88 in his castle in San Simeon, California. Having been alternately king and kingmaker in American politics for a half century, Hearst’s funeral would leave the streets around the Grace Cathedral full for blocks, with his son and heir William Randolph Hearst Jr. managing proceedings. Yet, in light of Hearst’s turn to the opposition and support for Fulgencio Batista, President La Follette would be notably absent from the funeral of the man who once coronated him the Farmer-Labor Party’s nominee for the presidency.
-President La Follette would push for the statehood of the territory of Tannenbaum, initially in a tandem effort with Territorial Representative Ernest Gruening’s push for Jewish colonization of the region as an alternative to the increasingly violent Palestine. However, with public sentiment against statehood riled up by Father Charles Coughlin in a campaign tinged by anti-semitism, Senator Henrik Shipstead would filibuster the statehood bill, prompting the Administration to declare a moratoria on statehood efforts and a reconsideration of whether statehood stands in line with national security interest.
-At the urging of singer turned Tennessee Governor Roy Acuff, a group of anti-La Follette Hollywood stars have formed The Motion Picture Alliance for the Preservation of American Ideals, including Jane Russell, Ronald Reagan, Zasu Pitts, Gloria Swanson, June Allyson, Pat Buttram, Orson Welles, and Shirley Temple.
-Senator John Horne Blackmore has proposed an additional tax on chain stores to encourage the development of small business, while he, former New York Governor Ezra Pound, and publisher James Laughlin have called for the revival of the American social credit movement.
-Alabama and Illinois have established themselves as the fastest growing states in the nation, demonstrating success in Single Taxer Paul Douglas’s new “Illinois Model” as well as the continued prosperity of Alabama in the wake of Milford W. Howard’s fascist “Alabama Model” that has inspired emulation globally.
-Farmer-Laborite Maine Senator Benjamin Bubar’s investigation of Hollywood has led to the firing or blacklisting of several dozen actors on charges of alleged homosexuality, with the Administration attempting to tie the issue to support for the President’s political opposition, citing the blacklisting of Greta Garbo and Tennessee Williams as precedent for the firing of longtime members of the foreign service on charges of possible homosexual activities.
-Notable inventions and scientific breakthroughs during President La Follette’s term include the discovery of DNA by scientist Rosalind Franklin; the hydrogen bomb, newly tested on the island of Sakhalin; the first successful kidney transplant; and a revolutionary new vaccine for polio invented by University of Alabama doctor Jonas Salk.

In John L. Lewis's stead, dynamic young Jimmy Hoffa has led the independent labor movement.
The Supreme Court:
-Justice Thomas C. O’Brien, appointed in 1939 as a part of President Lindbergh’s takeover of the court, would die in November of 1951 at the age of 64. With the Presidency still reeling from impeachment, La Follette would nominate Michigan Supreme Court Justice Evo DeConcini to the position. However, the hostile Senate would overwhelmingly refuse to confirm the appointment, with Progressive-Federalist Leader George Pritchard vowing to oppose any La Follette nominee. With neither side budging, the position has remained vacant.

Map of the world as of 1952.
World Events:
-After 9 years of prolonged conflict, the Franco-British War would conclude in August of 1950 with the Treaty of Amsterdam signed by Marshal Petain and British Prime Minister Oliver Baldwin, largely ceding French colonies to the British Empire, with the exception of the Congo, on the time table for independence, and Guiana and Algeria, incorporated directly into metropolitan France. Meanwhile, French dominion has been de facto recognized over most of Western Europe, with the west bank of the Rhine, Catalonia, Luxembourg, and Belgium directly incorporated into France while Germany has been divided into a series of puppet states.
-Although the Spanish Republic has survived, the French-influenced, Catholic monarchist CEDA led by José María Valiente Soriano has received significant funding in challenging Prime Minister Jose Ortega y Gasset, with a similar situation emerging in Italy following the democratization of the nation by former dictator Filippo Tommaso Marinetti, who has been succeeded by the pro-French Achille Lauro.
-Alongside the neutral Netherlands, Portugal has stood outside of the French bloc, as fascist leader Francisco Rolão Preto has held onto power while courting the support of both Bolshevik Russia and the United States, explicitly citing Milford W. Howard as his model for rule.
-In what the French government has labeled “le épuration de la frontière,” (the border purification), a forced exodus has occurred from newly annexed territories, driving millions from their communities and largely to French Africa, where the government has resettled hundreds of thousands each of Catalans, Germans, Greeks, Flemish Belgians, Italians, and the Occitan as French settlers claim their former homes.
-Meanwhile, the international process of decolonization has sped up rapidly, with a proposal by Choudhary Rahmat Ali being adopted by the British to partition the former Raj and form the states of India and Pakistan, alongside a Christian state in the far east.
-Mexican Prime Minister Manuel Gomez Morin has emerged as the primary center of power in the Empire after the crowning of 8 year old Maximiliano II as Emperor.
-Under the leadership of Prime Minister George Drew, the Progressive-Conservatives have won yet another Canadian election, yet the rise of the Social Credit Party in Quebec has driven them to status as the nation’s official opposition. Drew has hosted an Anglo-American Summit alongside President La Follette and Newfoundland Prime Minister Joey Smallwood.
-With Bolshevik Russia as the senior partner, the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics has been established as an alliance between Russia and its satellite states in Kazakhstan and the Caucasus.
-The Hashemite Caliphate has experienced increased unrest in both Palestine, where radical Jewish and Muslim militias have clashed, and the majority Christian regions of Mount Lebanon and newly annexed Nubia, where order has been nearly impossible to enforce.
-Following the death of Jorge Carlos Mariategui after two decades at the helm of Peru, Jorge del Prado Chavez has succeeded him, shifting the nation further towards Bolshevik Russia and ending all possibility of Peru entering a Pacific defense pact.
-The National Party’s oppressive regime of white rule in South Africa has been used as a model by a growing movement for a white minority government among the displaced, largely German white population in the French Congo, slated for independence within the decade.
-Social Democrat Mohammed Mossadegh has been elected President of the Republic of Iran, bringing the Georgist nation closer to Bolshevik Russia geopolitically as a counterweight to fiercely pro-British Caliph Abdullah and pro- French Turkish President Celâl Bayar.
-Greek dictator Konstantinos Logothetopoulos would be deposed in a 1952 revolution following the successful secession of the Aromanians, with communist Markos Vafeiadis leading a Provisional Democratic People’s Government with Bolshevik support. However, prominent author Nikos Kazantzakis has emerged at the fore of an anti-Vafeiadis protest movement for democratic socialism influenced by Georges Sorel.
-Adopted throughout the Habsburg Realm, Soviet Union, and among many Jews in Palestine and Europeans in the Congo, the Esperanto language has gained nearly 50,000,000 speakers and become the official language of diplomacy for the newly founded Republic of Korea.

2024.05.15 15:34 Twant TOA Hell May 2024 Rotation

I finished Rank 1 this month. Most seemed to struggle with stage 7 and maybe 9. Thanks to all the people who rushed, it was fun.
If you prefer or need a more f2p approach to Toa Hell rather than a speedrun approach I would recommend you to wait for u/AncientDragon1 guide.
In game and on twitch I am known as sogukpolar. You can see my playthrough here.
Stage 1 Laima
immune to cooldown/no passives
This stage is the easiest as enemy speeds aren't as high. So the restrictions don’t do much. I went with a high damage control comp but you can probably pick whatever as long as you deny the enemy their turns.
Stage 2 Aschubel
Silence at the start/immunity at the start of battle
Annoying restrictions if you do not have Tiana or Giana. Other than that there is not much to say here. Let Vero go first to cleanse the silence the proceed with your stripper. The stats of the enemy monsters arent as high as in the later stages so any stripper should do the trick. Shaman is much better than spectra here damage wise. If you need more sustain pick Tetra instead of Veromos.
Stage 3 Mugwol
immune to inability/immune to cooldown
I went in quite risky for the speed. A much safer option would be Herne instead of Amber for oblivions and heals. Bolverk teams are also a very popular option in this stage and is also viable. It seems much slower though to me.
Stage 4 Odin
Will at start/Counter buff
This stage seems new but I am not quite sure. Anyway, if you want a safer option go with another control unit like cp instead of Amber. I am not sure if this can be Bolverked. There are too many heals for that imo. It also would be quite slow. Control is much easier to handle.
Stage 5 Manannan
+200% crit dmg/counter buff at start
Pretty much the same as the previous stage. Another control unit instead of Amber makes it much safer but slower.
Stage 6 Miles
1 turn debuffs/immune to atb altering effects
Disregard the will runes in the wasves. I took those pictures from another month. Not having the will restriction makes it a lot easier though. This team is op and can be used in most stages where you can't use atb altering effects. Though is gonna do a lot of damage once Shizuka does her 3rd skill because of all the buffs on the field so watch out for that. This probably can be Bolverked as well but I didn't wanna bother with the 1st wave.
Stage 7 Mei Hou Wang
25% chance to stun/15% atb per hit
This seems to be the stage where everbody struggled. I tried different teams and the MVP in the was Water Geralt. Fr his 3rd skill on bosses is nothing less than op because it only has a 2 turn cd on unit you cannot stun. He has def break on 2nd and atk break on 1st skill as well so can set himself up for his nuke quite well.
I tried Bolverking it as well but lacked the heal block in the end. Gapsoo does a lot of dmg though with his second skill as well as MHW with his stacks so I am not sure if it is viable. Let me know in the comments if it is
Edit: Bolverking is possible. I have heard of Vigor and Fedora being used as heal blocker. I like Fedora much more because of his 2 turn heal block.
Stage 8 Asima
+40% atk if an ally dies/immune to cooldown
Disregard the silence debuffs. I took those pictures from another month. Having said that without silence this stage is quite easy. There is a bit of rng with with wind monkeys but if you are able to kill the dark poison masters before they get a turn it should be fine. This can be Bolverked for sure. Make sure to bring enough immunity.
Stage 9 Valantis
Immunity at start/15% atb per hit
I Struggled with this stage as well in the beginning until I realized that Haegang is op, not just in RTA but now in TOA as well. You can probably imagine how the fight looked. Strip then cleanse constantly into gaining atb, cutting the opponent and buffing again lmao. He made this stage free tbh. Try it for yourself.
Stage 10 Ath'taros
3000 reflect damage/no buffs
This can be double or triple string mastered but I thought that this was faster. This was aloso the first time I hit 3 oblivions in a row on Douglas lol. Build your dark homunculus very tanky with -light dmg. If you use Bolverk prioritze killing Tetra in the first wave. If Douglas is dead with only Tetra remaining you can't pass the wave. You can't use Bolverk because of the no buff restriction but you alson don't need him because the enemy monsters kill themselves
Good luck and thank you for reading!
If you have further questions feel free to ask.
Runes
Everybody is on Violent. Except Tetra and Tiana are on swift, Pontos is on Despair and Shaman on blade swift hp, crit dmd, def.
FAQ
Q: What skills does your Dark Homunculus have and is she fully skilled? A: Yes, she is fully skilled and has the uppermost skills in the skill tree.
Q: What string master should I use? A: Light>Wind>Fire in that order.

A further away pic
It is hard to get a good picture since it is such a large space, but here are some more pics of the transformation from a distance. Pic #2 is me standing in the exact position as Pic #6, so you can see the difference.
I sheet mulched my front yard, leaving a grass walkway to the arbor. The rest of the yard is now garden beds with native plant and flagstone pathways.
Plants include: Henderson's checkermallow, douglas aster, pearly everlasting, goldenrod, red osier dogwood, pacific ninebark, twinberry honeysuckle, snowberry and lots of bee balm.
The pots are all seeds that I am starting!
It is really prettier in person than these pics make it look. I will post again once things start blooming more!

2024.05.14 19:10 Douglasjm Magic is Programming B2 Chapter 1: Catching Up

Synopsis:
Carlos was an ordinary software engineer on Earth, up until he died and found himself in a fantasy world of dungeons, magic, and adventure. This new world offers many fascinating possibilities, but it's unfortunate that the skills he spent much of his life developing will be useless because they don't have computers.
Wait, why does this spell incantation read like a computer program's source code? Magic is programming?
___
Here we go with book 2!
<< First < Previous Next >
Carlos lounged comfortably on one of the mayor's fancy sofas. At 23 years old with a healthy body he really didn't need cushioned upholstery, but he liked how it felt. Honestly, he was probably more comfortable with high quality furniture than someone of his relatively low-income background should be in this world. Spoiled by the mass production factories of modern Earth, I suppose. All of this stuff here is probably handmade. Er, make that definitely handmade. Unless they have magic factories I haven't heard about, or something. He mentally shrugged. There was no point trying to change his attitudes toward furniture now. While this world might have higher prices for a lot of things than he was used to, he was also a lot richer than he was used to thanks to having become a noble lord. People would expect him to treat fine furniture as cheap because of his station.
I might have the physical habits of a couch potato, but at least I don't look like one. Too skinny. Not as skinny as Amber, though. He smiled as he watched the young woman next to him on the sofa continue animatedly expounding on their recent adventures together. She was lanky, with few curves to speak of and spindly limbs, far from any conventional picture of feminine beauty. Her hair, a slightly lighter shade of brown than his own, was cropped short. He thought she was 18 or 19 years old, but wasn't sure. Have I really never asked her age before? ... Would that be a rude question here? Regardless of her age, she had grown her confidence a lot since their first meeting a few weeks ago. She'd found her footing in a new life that she'd seized with utter determination, and he saw no sign of the shyness that she'd first greeted him with. The way her potential was finally blooming was beautiful to watch.
Carlos turned his gaze to the sofa across from them and carefully held back from laughing at the expressions Trinlen was making as Amber wrapped up explaining the events and developments they'd gone through since their introduction to him at the Royal Mage Academy. Carlos had contributed a fair amount to the explanation at first, but Amber had taken to it with enthusiasm when she arrived, and he could tell she was enjoying it. The young man in front of them, newly graduated from said academy, was on the edge of his seat and leaning forward, hanging attentively on every word. His casual attire, plain and made of cheap materials, looked thoroughly out of place on the finely embroidered velvet of the sofa, but he'd shown no sign of even noticing the finery around him. Excitement warred for control of his face with surprise, disbelief, envy, and dismay.
Amber finished her impromptu monologue, and Trinlen slowly schooled his face into a neutral expression. His voice was tense and tightly controlled. "So... In short, you're telling me that in the mere two weeks since you met me, you discovered a mana-poaching conspiracy of nobles, were abducted right under the noses of two royal guards without them even noticing, absorbed mana so fast that you gained 6 levels in a day and a half - so unfair, by the way - somehow learned an obscure portal spell from just its name and description, found evidence of a conspiracy against the Crown, and personally met a princess." He paused, then threw his hands up as he wailed in frustration and disappointment. "And I missed it!?"
Carlos threw back his head and burst out laughing. He couldn't help it. Trinlen just sounded so much like a little kid who'd barely missed out on a candy store giving away its entire stock for free. It was such an incredible light-hearted contrast with how everyone else viewed these same events that the sheer ridiculousness of it was overwhelming. Amber joined the laughter a moment later, shaking her head in amused disbelief, and after a few more seconds Trinlen started chuckling too.
Carlos's laughter eventually trailed off, and he took a deep breath to settle down. "Thanks, Trinlen. It's been a very stressful two weeks, and laughing like that helped release a lot of it. Feels good. Anyway, what have you been up to? I thought you would take a whole month to graduate?"
"Technically I only said 'next month', not that it would be at the same point in the month. But yes, this is earlier than I expected. The normal graduation ceremony is still a week and a half away." Trinlen shrugged. "They didn't explain the reasons, but after what you said I'm guessing your meeting with the princess prompted her to do something. The vice headmaster called me to his office yesterday morning, a few teachers grilled me on my classwork, and they declared I'd passed my exams. Then they told me to pack because I'd be teleported to my new employers the next day, and here I am." He sighed. "Hmph. Now I won't get to humiliate Norla in front of the whole academy when she gives her speech." Then he perked up and grinned widely. "But it sounds like you two are going to be so much fun that I'll get over it in no time!"
"I'm not sure if I agree with your idea of fun, Trinlen, but if it motivates you to help us more then that's good enough for me." Carlos chuckled again. "Anyway, do you need some time to get settled in? You might need to think about lesson plans for us too. We don't need just catalogues of incantations to learn anymore, at least not for simple ones, but I believe you learned other things in the academy too. You mentioned creating your own spells, as I recall."
Trinlen nodded. "I did mention that, yes. I'm guessing your lack of need for a catalogue is because of your newfound ability to somehow pull entire incantations from thin air? You'll have to at least tell me about the limitations of that so I'll know what I still need to teach you, but yeah, there are other things. For one thing, there's your sloppy terminology! Why does no one outside of the academy care about properly distinguishing between the states of mana? Is it really that hard to understand that calling aether, mana, and essence all by the same term obscures your meaning and often causes confusion? Or are people so stupid that they can't even understand the difference?"
Carlos blinked and exchanged a look with Amber. His comprehension aid informed him about the distinction the instant Trinlen spoke the terms. That would have been nice to know earlier. The comprehension aid is a house secret, so we should let him explain. "At least for us, it's just ignorance. I don't think I've even heard the other two terms you mentioned, and certainly no one ever explained them. So, what is the difference?"
Trinlen paused, cocked his head for a moment, and slowly deflated after his impassioned rant. "Yeah, okay, that's fair. I don't think I ever heard about it before going to the academy either." He sat up straight. "Aether is what you've been calling ambient mana. It's thin like air, and it's everywhere. Its only use is converting it to mana or essence. Mana, using the term with proper precision, is thicker but still fluid like water. It exists primarily in people or creatures and is used as fuel to supply power for spells and magical effects. Essence is hard and solid. It is the material that soul structures are made of, as well as the forms of active spells and enchantments. Am I clear so far?"
Amber answered first. "Yes, I'm familiar with each of the forms you described. I have questions about more details - so many questions - but you should get properly settled in, and maybe eat lunch, before we really get down to it. Have you spoken with Mayor Stelras yet? Do you have lodging sorted out?"
"I went by his office first. He's having someone take my luggage to an inn. The Adventurer's Haven, I think? He said something about a 'low-value target' and having an empty suite already booked." Trinlen's eyes widened. "Waaait a minute. Is he putting me in the room you two were abducted from?"
Carlos shrugged. "Sounds like it."
"Nice! Think there'll be any evidence left of how it was done?"
"Haha! Probably not by this point, but you're welcome to look. Now go get unpacked, eat a meal, and start planning your lessons for us. I'm glad you're here, but we have some other things to do too."
Trinlen nodded and stood up. "Sure. I'll be back before you miss me."
Carlos waved as Trinlen sauntered out the door. He and Amber sat in companionable silence for a while as he felt the mana - or essence? - of Trinlen's soul moving off into the distance. "Well. That was interesting. It's good to have him, but I was expecting a bit more time to think and plan before he'd get here."
"Yeah." Amber stretched and then leaned back into the sofa's cushions, luxuriating in their soft firmness. "So, how much are we going to tell him? How useful will his knowledge even be for us, now that we have, what did you call it, the reference documentation? That bit about the states of mana is good to know, but is it really relevant and important, and how much more can there be that's not in the documentation?"
"Be careful talking about that out loud, remember?" Carlos relaxed and draped his arms across the sofa's back as he focused his mind on their mental bond through Purple, their friendly dungeon core. [On Earth, we made many languages similar to the language of incantations, and we had the reference documentation for all of them. We even published that documentation free for everyone to have. Teachers for those languages were still useful, and even critically important for many people. Having access to knowledge doesn't mean you automatically understand how to properly apply it. There may be related knowledge we have no idea even exists. There could be techniques and patterns for how to use the language that are simply outside the scope of the documentation. Perhaps most importantly, a teacher can use their experience to notice a student's mistakes and correct them before they become problems.]
[Hmm.] Amber bit her lip, thinking. [Like how I knew about making soul structures and synergies between them, but had no idea about the importance of being able to examine and fix them, I suppose.]
Carlos nodded. [Yeah. And that's a really simple example. I know some that are a lot more complex, though I'm not sure how many of them are even applicable for incantations. Inversion of control, dependency injection, factory patterns...] He shook his head. [Just the context knowledge needed to be able to fully understand those could take days or weeks to teach well enough for you to use them. I could maybe explain the basic ideas faster with some simplified analogies, but that would lose so many details that I doubt it would still be useful.]
Amber paused. [... Even my comprehension aid is baffled by the terms you just said. It translated the individual words that you said, but all I got for the phrases is a confusing jumble.] She chuckled. [Anyway, I concede the point. Trinlen will still be able to teach us important and useful things. We still need to decide what secrets to share with him.]
[A lot depends on how good he is at keeping secrets. We don't actually know him all that well yet. He's certainly fun, and he seems clever, but for assessing his integrity we're leaning pretty hard on just a janitor vouching for him.] Carlos frowned in thought. [In order for him to do his job, he needs to know that we can only "pull an entire incantation from thin air" if it's a simple one. He does not need to know the full details of help, however, and most certainly does not need to learn to use it himself. That secret is a very sensitive one, where even just letting too much knowledge of it spread would lose us a major advantage.]
[Definitely. No casting help where he can hear it, and don't say anything about it that's not directly relevant for his teaching, either. Not until he's earned our full trust.] Amber lapsed into silent consideration. [We should introduce him to Purple. We'll kind of have to at some point anyway, and the really valuable thing there is Purple himself, not just the knowledge of his existence.]
Carlos nodded. [True. I think that probably is the least sensitive of our house secrets, and being able to call him through a bond with Purple would be useful.] He chuckled. [And maybe his cleverness will end up producing some good ideas for Purple to use. See if he can find a more productive outlet than pranks for his creativity. And then... If he keeps that secret well enough for long enough, we can consider trusting him with more secrets.]
Amber sent back wordless agreement.
Carlos started sitting up, lifting himself out of the comfortable cushions. "Well, we should get some food ourselves, too. And maybe introduce Trinlen to everyone else along with Purple." He stood up and spotted a letter he'd set aside when Trinlen arrived. "Oh yeah, and what do you think we should do about Kindar?"
"Wait, what's this about Kindar?"

2024.05.14 04:07 Great_Actuator_9784 Dancer Patricia Douglas Sues Fixers Eddie Mannix of MGM after party 'casting call' and Other Fixers

Article on Other Fixers in Hollywood - Twigger Warnings: threats, fixers, SA
Patricia Douglas was not a name like Loretta Young, and that’s the way she wanted it. The young dancer ended up in Hollywood only because her mother harbored dreams of designing movie costumes.
As David Stenn wrote in Vanity Fair, “she did not drink, date, or dream of film fame.” But she had appeared in musicals for Warner Brothers and Columbia Pictures, which is how she came across an MGM casting call in 1937. While she believed it was for another dancing role in a movie, it was actually for a party.
The party was part of a five-day sales convention to celebrate MGM’s big year. This particular bash, according to the convention schedule obtained by Vanity Fair, was ...
After Douglas arrived at the studio-owned “ranch” with 120 other dancers in short cowgirl outfits, she slowly realized she’d been bused over as a plaything for drunk, lecherous businessmen. One of them was especially interested in her. Douglas found David Ross creepy from the start, and tried to dodge him by escaping to the ladies’ room. But when she reentered the party, he and another man, by her recollection, held her down and poured liquor down her throat. She broke free to throw up in the bathroom and stumble outside for fresh air. It was there that Ross found her, dragged her to his car, and raped her.
Douglas was taken to the hospital and examined by a doctor practically owned by MGM. None of the cops at the party bothered to file a criminal report. Undeterred, she filed a complaint against Ross with the Los Angeles district attorney’s office and took her story to the press.
Mannix, who had been at the party, leapt to defend MGM.
He systematically strong-armed potential witnesses into slandering Douglas.
She was painted as a lying lush, despite the fact that she never drank.
Some who had previously given statements supporting her claims would not repeat them in court. Her criminal case failed, and MGM also succeeded in stalling her civil suit (which named Mannix).
She tried one more time, only for her own lawyer to betray her. There was no other recourse, and her story was effectively erased for decades.
When later asked about Douglas, Mannix supposedly joked, “We had her killed.”
Strickling and Mannix’s fixer days ended in the 1960s.
Another Fixer, Otash:
Due to Otash’s reputation, his sensational stories were often questioned—sometimes by the man himself. Although Otash told associates he rushed to Lana Turner’s home the night her boyfriend Johnny Stompanato was stabbed by her daughter Cheryl Crane, and even removed the knife from the body, Otash dismissed the story in a 1991 interview. “Beverly Hills police chief Clinton Anderson once accused me of..."
**They claimed Mannix read every telegraph and all communications into/out of MGM Studios.**

British Royal Family Controversy: Has Kate Middleton had a look-alike to be seen in public?
🔴 First of all, wishing Kate the best in her healing journey. This is not directed towards her but the scandal of her look-alike. 🔴
It is going viral that Kate has a Kate-alike to allegedly attend public events for her without informing anybody about it.
Her name is Gabriella Munro Douglas and has been paid a crazy amount of money to do this. This is SO CREEPY. I'll add the transcript of the article and then a few pictures of her Instagram.
https://preview.redd.it/hah0hikrm60d1.png?width=1874&format=png&auto=webp&s=a483f06b3f692a5a401f268585a69bbf2dcb9b79
According to “Fiesta”, a Spanish television program revealed details about a woman who impersonates Kate Middleton, Princess of Wales, at public events. Before Kate Middleton announced that she was ill, the media took several photos of her in which she was seen having fun with her husband, Prince William, and her children. Now ‘Fiesta’ has claimed that these photos are not of Kate Middleton, but of her lookalike who was paid to pose as the Princess of Wales.
According to media reports, journalist Conca Calleja revealed that “Kate Lookalike” impersonates Kate Middleton and charges more than 1,100 euros per day to perform as the Princess of Wales. Despite this, Calleja stated that there was no official confirmation that the Palace had requested her services. There is no official record or confirmation that the Palace hired her for these tasks. Everything doubles do in this position is very unofficial.
Gabriella Munro Douglas, whose Instagram nickname is “Kate Lookalike”, bears an uncanny resemblance to Kate Middleton, and in a post on her Instagram account she stated: I divide my time between being like Kate Middleton, being a designer and renovating my house.” According to reports, Gabriella was a contestant on The X Factor and has also been involved in numerous advertising campaigns. The last post on her social media account was from 2016.
This is her Instagram profile:

1999 - Judge Mario Frigenti, in Rome ruled that Michael, in composing his song "Will You Be There,'' plagiarized an Italian songwriter. The judge immediately suspended a $2,200 fine, but ordered Michael to pay court costs (which could be high as the case has taken four years to pass through court).
Singer & songwriter Al Bano first claimed Jackson stole part of the musical motif to his song "I Cigni Di Balka (The Swans Of Balaka)" in 1993. The trial began two years later.
Michael said he has never met Bano & had never heard of his song until the suit was brought. His lawyers argued simple similarity did not constitute plagiarism.
The court heard an expert say that 37 notes were the same in each song.
One of Michael's lawyers, Alberto Seganti, said he will appeal. "There is no proof of plagiarism". In a hearing in Rome two years ago Michael told the court there was some similarity between the two songs, "but it's completely coincidental."
After the verdict, Al Bano invited Jackson to join him in performing a concert for the children of Kosovo.
"The criminal court's ruling was groundless and a travesty," Jackson's copyright lawyer Eve Wagner said at that time. "The criminal court had not only ignored the previous rulings by six other judges in Jackson's favor but also the opinion of the court's own expert that there was 'no possibility of plagiarism.'"
In the previous year, Bano lost a civil case for copyright infringement against Jackson & was ordered to pay expenses. Bano has also brought numerous civil cases against Jackson but has failed to win any of them.
In the past, Michael has been cleared of plagiarism allegations in the United States involving his Dangerous and Thriller albums.
In March of 2001, a Rome appeals court overturns the lower court’s decision, clearing Michael of plagiarism allegations.

2009 - AEG issues a press release to officially announce Kenny Ortega as the show producer. Along with the press release is a new picture of Michael & Ortega during the rehearsals.
The streets of Hollywood are buzzing; Michael Jackson mania is in full swing 5,500 miles away from The O2 arena – the home of his historic 50 concerts this summer.
Kenny Ortega, the renowned Director, Producer, Choreographer and creative talent is hard at work collaborating with Michael Jackson in the overall design and direction for the upcoming ‘This Is It’ concert shows. Ortega previously worked on Michael Jackson’s Dangerous and HIStory tours, some of the most spectacular shows ever staged. Last week, thousands of dancers flew in from every corner of the globe including Japan, Australia, South America and Europe to audition for Jackson and Ortega – all of them were chasing their dream of winning a spot to perform on stage with their idol Michael Jackson.
Even after the selection process narrowed the competition from thousands of submissions to over five hundred top international dancers, there was still no dance space large enough in Los Angeles or New York to house the auditions. The producers ended up booking LA’s Nokia Theatre L.A. LIVE, part of the site where the Grammy Awards are held each year, to handle the unprecedented numbers of performers who flocked to these auditions.
Ortega, having once been in partnership with Gene Kelly, is most recently known for his work as the Director and Choreographer of Disney’s, High School Musical 1, 2 & 3. Ortega also Produced and Directed the Barbra Streisand’s Millennium concert tour and is a two time Emmy award winner for his work as Director and Choreographer of the 2002 Winter Olympics opening and closing ceremonies in Salt Lake City, Utah.
In receiving the phone call from Michael to lead the team, Ortega said, “My answer without a beat was nothing could keep me away. Collaborating with Michael on the Dangerous and HIStory tours were two of the greatest creative experiences of my life, to be invited to partner with him again is a dream come true. Working with Michael is always a true and full partnership, he is a creative mastermind, he assembles top professionals to lead his team and then inspires each and every one of us to climb to new places, break out of the box and conquer new challenges. He is the most significant artist and entertainer of our generation.”
“This Is It” is a spectacular concert experience incorporating iconic Jackson songs and choreography mixed with original new works. Ortega says, “Our show goals are to create more than a concert but a complete theatrical musical experience with a dynamic balance that features Jackson in both spectacular production and intimate settings. The stage set, choreography, costumes, lighting, effects and overall production will be of the highest standard and pushing the state of the art.” Michael is dedicated to every detail and aspect of the show working closely with his creative and talented production team. He is “tremendously excited” about sharing his stage show with hundreds of thousands of fans this summer in London. Ortega goes on to say, “It has been over a decade since Michael and I worked on the HIStory tour together. We had been in discussion in the last couple of years about finding a new project to work on. When I got the call to join him for these concerts I was in-between gigs, catching my breath. I had just finished a World Press tour for High School Musical and was about to start a new film. In accepting the invitation I had to move a few mountains to clear my schedule, but I’m thrilled to say I’m fully on board.”
Casting is in final stages for dancers and the band. The dedication, passion and determination of these performers, who are all personally inspired by Michael Jackson brings an unprecedented intensity to the stage. Michael Jackson, The King of Pop, has influenced a generation of performers through his music, dance and stage shows impacting an art form. This week with rehearsals in full swing the impossible has become possible as details to this complex and dramatic show are being put together. And when moments get intense and exciting in rehearsals an age-old British tradition has been adopted – a tea break!
Ortega adds, “I go to work each day with a huge sense of joy just knowing what is in-store. Michael, the team and I will hash out a creative idea, we’re ready to implement it and Michael will say let’s sleep on it. The next day he is back in studio raising the bar to the next level and pushing us further for greater dynamic results.” Randy Phillips, President & CEO of AEG Live, commented, “The unprecedented demand for these shows turned a normal public on sale into a cultural phenomenon and pushed the boundaries by which we measure success. Michael and Kenny are creating an escapist adventure that will take the audience on an entertainment experience only imagined in dreams or big budget motion pictures. This is the perfect pairing on unique creative talents with the greatest repertoire in contemporary music.”
Ortega concludes, “I am looking forward to the creative days ahead as we build a Michael Jackson experience like no other, and to ultimately arriving at The O2 - a magnificent venue and a worldly place. I am thrilled to be a part of the team that once again is bringing Michael Jackson, the greatest entertainer of our generation, back to the stage and into the light and love of his devoted fans.” By the end of the 50 concerts, 1 million fans will have witnessed one of the greatest musical events in history. This will be the last chance to see the King of Pop in London in what will be a historic stage show, and once in a lifetime concert experience - this really is it!
