Today the White House announced tariffs on certain products imported from China, including steel and aluminum products, semiconductors, electric vehicles, batteries and battery components, solar cells, ship-to-shore cranes, syringes and needles, and certain personal protective equipment (or PPE). According to the White House, these higher tariffs are designed “to protect American workers and businesses from China’s unfair trade practices.” Tariffs are essentially taxes on imported goods, and altogether the tariff hikes cover about $18 billion in imported goods.
In 2018, Trump abruptly ended the economic era based on the idea that free trade benefited the global economy by putting tariffs of 25% on a wide range of foreign made goods. This was a cap to a set of ideas that had been sputtering for a while as industries moved to countries with cheaper labor, feeding the popular discontent Trump tapped into. Trump claimed that other countries would pay his tariffs, but tariffs are actually paid by Americans, not foreign countries, and his have cost Americans more than $230 billion. Half of that has come in under the Biden administration.
Trump’s tariffs also actually cost jobs, but they were very popular politically. A January 2024 National Bureau of Economic Research working paper by David Autor, Anne Beck, David Dorn, and Gordon H. Hanson established that the trade war of 2018–2019 hurt the U.S. heartland but actually helped Trump’s reelection campaign. “Residents of regions more exposed to import tariffs became less likely to identify as Democrats, more likely to vote to reelect Donald Trump in 2020, and more likely to elect Republicans to Congress,” they discovered.
Now Trump is saying, that if elected, he will impose a 10% tariff on everything imported into the United States, with a 60% tariff on anything from China and a 100% tariff on any cars made outside the U.S.
In contrast, the administration’s new tariffs are aimed only at China, and only at industries already growing in the U.S., especially semiconductors. Tariffs will rise to 50% on semiconductors and solar cells, 100% on electric vehicles, and 25% on batteries, a hike that will help the Big Three automakers who agreed to union demands in newly opened battery factories, as well as their United Auto Workers workforce. “I’m determined that the future of electric vehicles be made in America by union workers. Period,” Biden said.
The administration says the tariffs are a response to China’s unfair trade practices, and such tariffs are popular in the manufacturing belt of Michigan, Wisconsin, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. Democratic senators from that region have asked Biden to maintain or increase tariffs on Chinese imports after “[g]enerations of free trade agreements that prioritize multinational corporations have devasted our communities, harmed our economy, and crippled our job market.”
In other economic news, a new rule capping credit card late fees at $8, about a quarter of what they are now, was supposed to go into effect today, but on Friday a federal judge in Texas blocked the rule. The new cap was set by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB), the brainchild of Massachusetts Democratic senator Elizabeth Warren, and was part of the Biden administration’s crackdown on “junk fees.”
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce and the American Bankers Association sued to stop the rule from taking effect, and U.S. District Judge Mark Pittman, appointed by Trump, issued a preliminary injunction against it. His reasoning draws from an argument advanced by the far-right Fifth Circuit, which oversees Texas, Mississippi, and Louisiana, arguing that the CFPB itself is unconstitutional because of its funding structure. "Consequently, any regulations promulgated under that regime are likely unconstitutional as well," Pittman wrote.
On Friday, major airlines, including American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, JetBlue Airways, Hawaiian Airlines, and Alaska Airlines—but not Southwest Airlines—sued the U.S. Department of Transportation over its new rule that requires the airlines disclose their fees, such as for checking bags, upfront to consumers. The department says consumers are overpaying by $543 million a year in unexpected fees.
The airlines say that the rule will confuse consumers and that its “attempt to regulate private business operations in a thriving marketplace is beyond its authority.”
The other big story of the day is the continuing attempt of the MAGA Republicans to overturn our democratic system.
This morning, House speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA), second in line for the presidency and sworn to uphold the Constitution, left his post in Washington, D.C., to appear with former president Trump at his trial for falsifying business records to deceive voters before the 2016 election. The House was due to consider the final passage of the crucially important Federal Aviation Authority Reauthorization Act, but Johnson chose instead to show up to do the work the judge’s gag order means Trump cannot do himself, attacking key witness Michael Cohen, Trump’s former fixer. Johnson described Cohen as “clearly on a mission for personal revenge” and, citing his “history of perjury,” said that “[n]o one should believe a word he says in there.”
“I do have a lot of surrogates,” Trump boasted this morning, “and they are speaking very beautifully.” Senator Tommy Tuberville (R-AL), who was also at the trial this morning, later said on Newsmax that they had indeed gone to “overcome this gag order.”
Johnson went on to call the trial “corrupt” and say “this ridiculous prosecution…is not about justice. It’s all about politics.” He left without taking questions. Meg Kinnard of the Associated Press called out the moment as “a remarkable moment in modern American politics: The House speaker turning his Republican Party against the federal and state legal systems that are foundational to the U.S. government and a cornerstone of democracy.”
Peter Eisler, Ned Parker, and Joseph Tanfani of Reuters explained today how those attacks on our judiciary are sparking widespread calls for violence against judges, with social media posters in echo chambers goading each other into ever more extreme statements. According to her lawyer, Stephanie Clifford, also known as Stormy Daniels, wore a bullet-proof vest as she came and went from court, an uncanny echo of the precautions necessary in mob trials.
In a different attack on our constitutional system, House Republicans are trying to replace the administration’s foreign policy with their own. Over the weekend, they introduced a bill to force President Biden to send offensive weapons to Israel for its invasion of Rafah, overruling the administration’s decision to withhold a shipment of 2,000-pound and 500-pound bombs after Israeli prime minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his government would invade Rafah despite strong opposition from the Biden administration.
White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters: “We strongly, strongly oppose attempts to constrain the president’s ability to deploy a U.S. security assistance consistent with U.S. foreign policy and national security objectives.”
The Constitution establishes that the executive branch manages foreign affairs, and until 2015 it was an established practice that politics stopped at the water’s edge, meaning that Congress quarreled with the administration at home but the two presented a united front in foreign affairs. That practice ended in March 2015, when 47 Republican senators, led by freshman Arkansas senator Tom Cotton, wrote a letter to Iran’s leaders warning that they would not honor any agreement Iran reached with the Obama administration over its development of nuclear weapons.
The Obama administration did end up negotiating the July 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action with Iran and several world powers, under which Iran agreed to restrict its nuclear development and allow inspections in exchange for relief from economic sanctions. In 2018 the extremist Republicans got their way when Trump withdrew the U.S. from the deal, largely collapsing it, after which Iran resumed its expansion of the nuclear enrichment program it had stopped under the agreement.
Now extremists in the House are trying to run foreign policy on their own. The costs of that usurpation of power are clear in Niger, formerly a key U.S. ally in the counterterrorism effort in West Africa. The new prime minister of Niger, Ali Mahaman Lamine Zeine, whose party took power after a coup d’état threw out Niger’s democratically elected president, defended his country’s turn away from the U.S. and toward Russia in an interview with Rachel Chason of the Washington Post. Recalling the House’s six month delay in passing the national security supplemental bill, he said: “We have seen what the United States will do to defend its allies, because we have seen Ukraine and Israel.”

2024.05.15 17:12 razzledazzle_queen Move Out Fee

Move Out Fee
Hello,
Washington state. We moved out and gave notice. Our landlord agreed on it. I took accountability of a major damage area to the hardwood floor (not real hardwood), it was a few slits that got peeled and ripped.
Not other major damages but they want to charge us a little over $1400 for the move out fee. $900 of that is for labor cost.
We lived there for 4 years with a little one. To me and others the apartment looks lived in.
I expected maybe a $500 max fee for the carpet and the hardwood area because I can agree that is our damages but charging us for them having to paint the walls?! That’s a little much in my opinion. They also claim moisture but there was none.
How do I fight this? I cant afford this.

2024.05.15 17:10 New_Stop_8734 Digging the trench for an electrical line

I'm planning to have a trench dug for a hot tub's electrical line. It will be about 30 feet long with 2 turns. I've had two contractors give me quotes - one for $200 and one for $800-1600 (depending on how much hand digging is required).
The more expensive contractor seemed to really know his stuff and gave me good advice on laying conduit, doing inspections, etc. Great reviews.
The $200 guy I found on Facebook marketplace, says he works digging trenches for a cable company and does this for side money. But I figure as long as he doesn't hit utilities it's hard to fuck this up.
I'm considering having the "cheap guy" dig as much as he can and then I'll hand dig the rest and let the electrician get to work. Any issues with this plan? I'm guessing most of the expensive contractor's cost is labor.

2024.05.15 16:11 SmoothieCookies Let Me Build Your (Simple) Bubble App for Free

Hi Guys,
Stefano here, long-time lurker ;)
I'm a software developer with several years of experience. Recently, I discovered Bubble and started experimenting with it. I think the tool is cool, but the backend workflows aren't very powerful and are quite expensive.
To avoid these issues, I began experimenting with a hybrid approach: using Bubble for the UI and Firebase for the backend (serverless function)/authentication/data. This seems to work pretty well, so I'm now wondering if I can build something more serious.
I don't have any real projects at the moment, so I was wondering if anyone here needs a developer. I'll work for free, of course; you'll just need to cover the Bubble license costs, and I'll provide the labor.
The stack I'm using is Bubble.io with OpenBuild as the template and Firebase for the backend.
I'm ready to work for free to experiment with this approach, but I don't want to invest too much time, so the stack is quite mandatory :)
Let me know if you're interested!
Best, Stefano

2024.05.15 15:34 denhamwolfe I feel like I got overcharged at the mechanic shop

I just got a 2019 Tacoma TRD Off-road and it’s the first time that I’ve ever owned a vehicle this nice, and that I care about a lot.
With that being said, I took it in for a pre purchase inspection (at a large shop with many locations, not a ma and pa) and they mentioned that the front left inner tie rod needed replacing, and an alignment would be necessary after that. The guy helping me gave me a rough estimate that it would cost around 150 for that repair.
So about 3 weeks after owning the vehicle I took it into the same shop, and they said that for parts and labor the inner tie rod would be a $190 dollar fix, and the alignment would cost $120 on top of that. That seems really steep especially when the tie rod parts I’ve found online are a lot less expensive.
I typically do any repairs or maintenance myself on my vehicles, however since this also required an alignment I decided it would be best to take it into a shop. And maybe I misunderstood the first time around, but being charged $325 dollars for this repair seems very steep and very different from what I was initially told. Maybe the problem was I went with a franchised location instead of a ma and pa shop, or maybe I am being charged a fair price.. I just don’t have a lot of experience at shops because I typically like to DIY anything that pops up.
Did I get overcharged at the mechanic shop??

5 New Ways to Do Kitchen Cabinet Remodel in Singapore
Grey Kitchen cabinets
The kitchen is the heart of every home in Singapore. It's where families gather to cook, eat, and create lasting memories. However, over time, kitchen cabinets can start to look worn, outdated, or simply not match your current style preferences.
Fortunately, you don't need to undergo a full kitchen renovation to breathe new life into your cabinets. There are several innovative and cost-effective ways to remodel your kitchen cabinets, allowing you to achieve a fresh, modern look without breaking the bank.
This article will explore four exciting options for kitchen cabinet remodeling that are gaining popularity in Singapore: cabinet painting, refacing, incorporating open shelving, and adding glass inserts. Each method offers unique advantages and design possibilities, catering to different budgets, preferences, and desired levels of transformation.
By exploring these new ways to remodel your kitchen cabinets, you can create a space that not only looks beautiful but also reflects your personal style and enhances the overall functionality of your kitchen. Whether you're looking for a quick and affordable update or a more significant change, these cabinet remodeling options have something to offer every homeowner in Singapore.
Painted kitchen cabinet

Kitchen Cabinet Painting:

One of the most cost-effective and straightforward ways to transform the look of your kitchen cabinets is through painting. This method allows you to achieve a fresh, new appearance without the need for a full cabinet replacement. Whether your existing cabinets are made of wood, laminate, or even metal, a fresh coat of paint can breathe new life into them.
The process of painting kitchen cabinets begins with thorough preparation. This includes cleaning the cabinet surfaces to remove any grease, dirt, or grime that may have accumulated over time. Sanding the cabinets is also crucial to ensure proper adhesion of the new paint. For best results, it is recommended to use a high-quality primer before applying the topcoat of paint.
When it comes to selecting the perfect paint color, the options are endless. From bold and vibrant hues to soft and neutral tones, the right color can transform the entire ambiance of your kitchen. Consider the existing color scheme, lighting, and overall style of your home to choose a shade that complements your space.
In addition to solid colors, you can also explore different paint finishes to achieve the desired look and durability. Semi-gloss and satin finishes are popular choices for kitchen cabinets as they are easy to clean and resistant to moisture and stains. For a more modern and sleek appearance, you can opt for a high-gloss finish, which reflects light beautifully and adds depth to the cabinets.
One of the great advantages of painting kitchen cabinets is the ability to create unique color combinations. For instance, you can paint the cabinet boxes in a neutral shade while adding a pop of color to the doors and drawers. This not only adds visual interest but also allows you to incorporate your personal style into the design.

Cabinet Refacing:

If you're looking for a more substantial update to your kitchen cabinets without the expense of a full replacement, cabinet refacing could be the perfect solution. This process involves replacing the visible surfaces of your existing cabinets, such as the doors, drawers, and cabinet boxes, while leaving the internal framework intact.
Cabinet refacing offers a wide range of design possibilities, allowing you to choose from various materials, including wood veneers, laminates, and solid wood. Wood veneers provide a luxurious and natural look, while laminates are a more affordable and low-maintenance option. For those seeking a truly high-end finish, solid wood cabinets offer unparalleled beauty and durability.
One of the significant advantages of cabinet refacing is the cost savings compared to a complete cabinet replacement. Since the internal structure remains untouched, the labor and material costs are significantly lower, making it an attractive option for homeowners on a budget.
The refacing process typically begins with the removal of the existing cabinet doors, drawers, and visible surfaces. The cabinet boxes are then prepared for the new materials, ensuring a seamless and flawless installation. Professional cabinet makers will work closely with you to select the perfect door styles, finishes, and hardware that complement your desired aesthetic.
In addition to updating the cabinet surfaces, refacing also allows you to reconfigure the layout of your kitchen, if desired. This can include adding additional cabinets, adjusting the height or depth of existing ones, or incorporating specialized storage solutions such as pull-out shelves or lazy Susans.
With cabinet refacing, you can achieve a dramatic transformation in your kitchen without the hassle and disruption of a full-scale renovation. The process is typically faster and less intrusive than a complete cabinet replacement, allowing you to enjoy your newly updated kitchen in a shorter time frame.

Open Shelving:

Embracing the trend of open shelving in your kitchen can not only add visual interest but also create a sense of airiness and spaciousness. This modern design approach involves removing a portion of your upper cabinets and replacing them with sleek, open shelves.
Open shelving allows you to showcase your favorite dishware, cookbooks, or decorative items, transforming your kitchen into a stylish and personalized space. By carefully curating the items on display, you can create a focal point that reflects your unique style and taste.
One of the key benefits of open shelving is the increased accessibility it provides. With items readily visible and within reach, you can streamline your kitchen workflow and eliminate the need to rummage through deep cabinets. This can be particularly useful for frequently used items, such as glasses, mugs, or spice jars.
When incorporating open shelving into your kitchen, it's important to consider the materials and finishes that complement your overall design aesthetic. Floating shelves made of wood, metal, or even glass can create a modern and minimalist look, while shelves with decorative brackets or corbels can add a touch of rustic charm.
To maintain a cohesive and visually appealing display, consider organizing your open shelves by grouping items based on color, texture, or function. Alternatively, you can create a more eclectic and personalized look by mixing and matching different styles and materials.
It's essential to note that open shelving requires regular maintenance and dusting to keep your kitchen looking its best. However, with proper care and attention, open shelving can be a practical and stylish addition to your kitchen, allowing you to showcase your personal style while maximizing the functionality of your space.

Glass Inserts:

For those seeking a touch of elegance and modernity in their kitchen, incorporating glass inserts into cabinet doors can be a stunning addition. Glass inserts not only create a visually appealing focal point but also offer a unique way to showcase the contents of your cabinets or enhance the overall ambiance of your kitchen.
There are various types of glass inserts available, each offering a distinct look and functionality. Clear glass inserts provide a seamless and minimalist aesthetic, allowing you to display your beautiful dishware or decorative pieces. Frosted or patterned glass inserts, on the other hand, can add a touch of privacy while still letting in natural light.
Glass inserts can be installed in both upper and lower cabinets, depending on your design preferences and the desired level of visibility. For example, upper cabinets with glass inserts can highlight your favorite glassware or ceramics, while lower cabinets with glass inserts can showcase your collection of cookbooks or decorative items.
When incorporating glass inserts, it's important to consider the surrounding cabinetry and overall kitchen design. Complementary hardware, such as sleek handles or knobs, can elevate the look and tie the glass inserts seamlessly into the overall aesthetic.
Additionally, glass inserts can be combined with other cabinet remodeling techniques, such as painting or refacing, to create a truly unique and personalized kitchen space. For instance, you could pair glass inserts with a bold cabinet color or a modern wood veneer for a striking contrast.

Conclusion:

Updating your kitchen cabinets is an excellent way to breathe new life into your kitchen without the need for a full-scale renovation. Whether you choose to paint your cabinets, reface them, incorporate open shelving, or add glass inserts, these new ways to remodel offer endless possibilities for transforming your space.
As you embark on your cabinet remodeling journey, it's essential to consider your personal style, budget, and the level of transformation you desire. By exploring these innovative options and consulting with professionals, you can create a kitchen that not only looks beautiful but also reflects your unique personality and enhances the functionality of your space.
Remember, your kitchen is the heart of your home, and investing in its appearance and functionality can have a profound impact on your daily life. Embrace these new ways to remodel your kitchen cabinets and unlock the potential for a space that truly inspires you.

A crisis looms!! Affordable Chinese EVs . . .

Photo above - President Biden clowning for reporters as he welcomes Chinese leader Xi Jinping for an official state dinner 6 months ago. This month he announced 100% tariffs on imported Chinese goods.
Well, you can't accuse the White House of being hypocritical. Or out of touch. Wait, actually, we can. They just announced 100% tariffs on foreign built electric vehicles. And America's own high-tech industries are hitting a brick wall – not enough electricity. Due to an aging grid and a rush to decommission traditional power plants even though renewables aren't ready to fill the gap. See links below.
How much money will the 100% tariff cost American consumers? How much tax will flow to the US government? How many UAW jobs will it protect? If we're actually interested in legitimate economics, THOSE are the questions we should be asking.
On the face of it, Biden's scheme to choke off Chinese EVs, solar panels, chips, and everything else that might threaten his constituency makes perfect sense. This IS an election year. Trump IS leading in 5 out of 6 swing states. Democrats simply cannot afford take for granted the votes of UAW members, Silicon Valley girls and boys, and those renewable energy companies America has been subsidizing for a decade. There is no loyalty in politics. The only question is “what did you do for me lately?”
Is Trump a friend or foe of China? It doesn't even matter - I'm not voting for Trump either. He could announce suspension of all EV restrictions and I wouldn't vote for him. Or doubling Biden's tariffs. None of this makes sense if America is trying to navigate a path toward (a) enough electricity and (b) keeping China from stealing our tech, hacking our grid, and flooding America with Fentanyl.
Earth to candidates: affordable cars are not our enemy. Criminal regimes constantly attacking us, and having the lights go out are. A president should NOT be hosting Xi Jinping, chairman of the People's Republic of China, at a state dinner one month, and announcing 100% tariffs on Chinese stuff the next. It looks demented. I'm still waiting for an explanation of what America got in return for handing Xi a propaganda coup of 10,000 pictures smiling and shaking hands with Biden as if everything was A-OK.
I'm probably NOT in the market for a $12,000 EV from China. Even if influencers who've never driven one assure us “they're going to be great”. There are already a bunch of tiny, cheap cars for sale. They are all too harsh, noisy, and primitive to be allowed on America's interstates. Putting a small battery in the back doesn't change that equation. When it gets T-boned by an F150, you're still dead, batteries or no.
However, this writer IS concerned about having enough electricity. Depending on who you ask, America is either 3 years away from having enough public chargers, or public disillusionment with EV range and charging time makes the question moot. Because the market for EVs may already have been saturated. Congress has a plan for that though – more subsidies. Quick question – do you want $7,000 tax refund on a $100,000 Ford F150 Lightning truck (built by UAW union labor)? Or would you pay $24,000 (including the 100% tariff) for a Chinese EV with 180 miles of range? These are the choices we are being given.
Lissen up, Biden and Trump. Here are my priorities.
  1. Keep the lights on. Replace our $hitty century old high voltage transmission lines. Build new power plants.
  2. Stop the Chinese (and Russians) from hacking America's banks, electric grid, hospitals, and water supplies. These are acts of war.
  3. Stop the flow of Fentanyl, which has become the worst opioid crisis in American history. Far worse than heroin ever was.
If you don't want to talk about these things, I'm not even listening.
I'm just sayin' . . .

2024.05.15 15:20 fleemfleemfleemfleem Adding sink to cast iron drain in garage. Tap saddle okay?

I apologize if I'm using the wrong wording here.
I want to add a utility sink in my garage. The water heater in the utility closet has hot and cold water lines that could have tees put in to pex to the faucet. The main trouble is the drain.
There's a bathroom above the garage and the plumbing is in a finished soffit over a corner of the garage.
I figured out that the drain pipe from the bathroom dropped down next to the water heater, but in the wall of the utility closet by running water and listening to the wall. I confirmed with a boroscope, and then by cutting a hole and feeling it get hot when I ran hot water. It's a cast iron pipe (older house).
I got one quote from a plumber who wanted $3000 for labor to cut through cinderblock with the drain, and connect outside underground (before I located the drain line inside).
I'm having another plumber come in to quote now that I know where the drain line is and it's in a relatively convenient spot.
What should I ask for to: 1. Minimize risk of leaks 2. Minimize cost, $3000 kind of seems like a "we don't want the job" price to me
I see fernco sells tap saddle tees and wyes. On a previous leak on a 90 below the vent from the bathroom, it was replaced with a PVC elbow connected by fernco couplings.
Would the saddle be a risk to leak long-term? Would a PVC wye be okay in the cast-iron vertical drain? There's currently no cleanout, which would be another nice-to-have.
I just want to make sure I'm informed enough to discuss the project intelligently when the plumber shows up.

2024.05.15 15:14 evilohiogirl555 Mold under house

Hello party people, not sure if I came to the right place but got a situation on our hands. Went to tour a SF ranch home in our area and as soon as we walked in there was a noticable damp & musty smell that permeated the whole house. There was no crawl space (house was built effectively on top of the dirt with less than 2 inches between them) or vapor barrier. We are thinking water is coming down the property and settling under the house, also evident from some wobbly floor joists. From an initial call with a mold remediation company, since we cannot properly address the source of the water by getting under the house we can attempt to remove the existing mold but the problem will always come back. We suspect this is a big deal since if we wanted to address the source of the water we're talking jacking the house up, digging a new crawl space, etc - AKA some major, labor-intensive, and costly work, but aren't sure. We can't even scrub down the moldy floor joists since they're under the damn house!
We have a bit of a unique situation- for us, the property is more interesting than the house (6 acres). My husband is a builder and we would likely live on the land in a travel trailer for a year or two while we build up a new house on that land. I guess I'm curious in y'all's opinions, how big of a deal are these mold/water problems and are we crazy for thinking the house is a complete tear down? We offered about 60% under asking, which is a fair price for the land alone, but don't know if we're out of our minds or if you can truly make the mold situation livable. Thanks in advance

2024.05.15 15:13 louied91 Bright Mountain Media, Inc Announces First Quarter 2024 Financial Results

News Link: https://www.globenewswire.com/news-release/2024/05/14/2881952/0/en/Bright-Mountain-Media-Inc-Announces-First-Quarter-2024-Financial-Results.html
Boca Raton, FL, May 14, 2024 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Bright Mountain Media, Inc. (OTCQB: BMTM) (“Bright Mountain” or the “Company”), a global holding company with current investments in digital publishing, advertising technology, consumer insights, and creative media services, today announced its financial results for the first quarter ended March 31, 2024 and 2023.
Matt Drinkwater, CEO of Bright Mountain Media, commented “We are pleased with the continued progress in our financial performance. Having accomplished the work of integrating two new businesses and reducing costs, we are focused on unlocking more synergies, launching new products and business lines, and delivering the vision of an AI-enabled marketing services platform to our customers. An example of these synergies has shown up in our ad tech business via organic top-line growth. This was primarily driven by the acceleration of leveraging the data assets of our market research division. This unique approach in the market is how we will continue to differentiate and create new opportunities in advertising services to increase return on advertising spend for customers across all segments. We remain optimistic that this represents the first of many synergies to come.”
Financial Results for the Three Months Ended March 31, 2024
●Revenue was $12.4 million, an increase of $10.9 million, or 731%, compared to $1.5 million for the same period of 2023, which was driven by the Big Village Acquisition, and was partially offset by macroeconomics factors, coupled with an overall reduction in spending by some customers due to inflationary concerns, which led to lower than normal rates and lower earnings specifically impacting our digital publishing division.
●Advertising technology revenue was approximately $2.6 million and digital publishing revenue was approximately $434,000. The new offerings we acquired as part of the Big Village Acquisition were consumer insights, creative services, and media services. Consumer insights revenue was approximately $6.7 million, creative services revenue was approximately $2.1 million, and media services revenue was approximately $641,000 during the first quarter of 2024.
Cost of revenue was $9.3 million, an increase of $8.3 million, or 860%, compared to $970,000 for the same period in 2023. The increase is a result of new costs associated with our new revenue offerings from the Big Village Acquisition, inclusive of direct salary and labor cost of approximately $1.9 million for employees that work directly on customer projects, and direct project costs of approximately $3.1 million for payments made to third-parties that are directly attributable to completion of projects to allow for revenue recognition, $2.1 million for non-direct project cost and legacy publisher cost of $1.8 million which increased by 270%. The increase in publisher cost is associated with the increase noted in advertising technology revenue of approximately 383%.
●General and administrative expense was $5.2 million, an increase of 53%, compared to $3.4 million in the same period of 2023.
●Gross margin was $3.1 million, an increase of 494%, compared to $528,000 in the same period of 2023.
●Net loss was $4.8 million, an increase of 26%, compared to a $3.8 million net loss in the same period of 2023.
●Adjusted EBITDA loss was $1.2 million compared to Adjusted EBITDA loss of $2.1 million in the same period of 2023. See the below section on Non-GAAP Financial Measure for a reconciliation of net loss to EBITDA and Adjusted EBITDA.

2024.05.15 15:04 Big_Canary_6998 Jaguar XF 2013 instrument cluster repair

Hello!
I bought my first jag XF 2013, less than a year ago. Soon after purchase I started having intermittent electrical faults, where it would flash no seatbelt fastened for example, or speed gauge not working, or “gearbox fault” and all sorts of things. Took it to a garage and had battery replaced, didn’t help. Then took it to auto electrician and they said it’s likely the instrument cluster and it will cost over £1500 to repair with labor and VAT. Is this normal? Any advice or similar experiences? Thank you

2024.05.15 15:03 Agitated-Reporter567 Rain sensor

Certified tech here, upsold a client on a rain sensor. Since they basically pay for themselves after time it’s an easy sell.
Boss told me it would be like $370 to do a rain sensor install and I find that steep. I understand the drive, gas and maintenance on vehicle, etc… but the rain sensor cost us $130 plus labor. A $250 up charge to maintain business is high. We’re already traveling there to install an expansion mod so I don’t understand.
Can an owner give me opinions. I’m looking to go my own road next year also so this would be awesome to hear some experienced owners provide insight.

Anybody want a 1998 Kouki with 32,851 Original miles?
I figured I’d see if anyone wants my Kouki. Before I continue to throw money at a car thats only been driven 50 miles in 2 years😳 (Pic of odometer when purchased and current mileage included)
Otherwise its getting paint, bodywork and rust preventive undercoating, done for $7k
1998 “Kouki” 32,851 original miles Car was totalled by insurance in 2000, rebuilt 6 months later and issued reconstructed title. It was stored and sat for 22 years, I purchased it in 2022. Fuel tank was dropped and flushed, rusted pump and fuel sender, removed and replaced.
5 speed swap done by OneMotion Auto Warminster P.A. a respected JDM shop in December 2023. Car shifts gears smoothly and operates without any issue. All Dash gauges work after the swap and car is fully functioning. Power windows, sunroof, cruise control, power mirrors Ac/Heat all function.
$1800 just in parts, for the 5 speed swap. I took over a year to source the best OEM/Nismo parts and best Aftermarket parts for the 5 speed swap from canada, japan, england and the U.S.
The shifter assembly has been completely rebuilt with gktech springs to remove stock play and slack.
All lock cylinders pulled and rekeyed so no other 240 key opens it 🥷
EGR Plate installed and delete done by OneMotion Auto during 5 speed swap.
They also did a full run down on the car to make sure everything works as it should plus more than I can remember off the top of my head, I have the invoice for the 5 speed swap and all other laboparts.
Mechanically its mint and ready to drive🙌🏽
Car comes with OEM front lip splitter(not attached) OEM USDM Foglights included (not attached)
My stash of rare and discontinued OEM/Tomei parts, I have are not included in sale.
But are available for purchase to car buyer for additional cost.

No trades at all!!! I have to many cars already. Serious Cash offers will be considered. I’d like $13,000 OBO cause thats what I’m out of pocket so far, but feel free to offer.
The mileage has been Carfax verified, engine matched to vin and 3 independent Nissan USA Dealerships have confirmed the odometer, has never been removed or tampered. Car is rust free and I encourage any actual parties with actual money to contact me for detailed videos of vehicle.
Had a bunch of people try to make me feel like a Chomo, but heres the facts. Its a real Kouki Its super low miles It runs and drives Its not a rusty shitbox Its technically one color It’s not on jack stands Its straight and body panels line up. So its in better condition than half the 240s out there. I don’t need to sell it, I just have too many cars and don’t use this one at all.

2024.05.15 14:52 BlueFishcake Sexy Steampunk Babes: Chapter Twenty Six

Yelena watched the doorway through which the young Ashfield scion had just left for a few moments more as she pondered over the meeting they’d just had.
Precocious indeed, she thought with a smile.
A smile that only grew as her gaze flitted over to her childhood friend’s… complicated expression.
It seemed young William’s decision had come as much a surprise to his instructor as it had come to Yelena herself.
“He said no,” Joana said after a few moments.
Yelena nodded slowly as she reclined into her friend’s surprisingly comfortable chair. Given what she knew of Griffith, the Queen had half expected the thing to be harder than mithril when she first sat down - but it was surprisingly plush.
“Not without good reason,” Yelena said as she shifted about.
“Good reason?” Joana scoffed. “You offered him your daughter’s hand.” Her eyes narrowed slightly. “You offered all of your daughter’s hands.”
Yelena rolled her eyes at her friend’s tone. “And if he’d accepted I would have considered it a bargain.”
A minor scandal and the loss of a number of future marriage alliances was ultimately nothing compared to the ability to raid Kraken nests. And that was ignoring that a hypothetical means to slay kraken in deep water would undoubtedly have other applications.
Applications that would be incredibly useful in the months to come.
Though, perhaps, if young William’s plans came to fruition that coming storm could be delayed by a few years.
“…Are things truly that desperate?” Joana asked quietly.
“They’re not great,” Yelena admitted, massaging the bridge of her nose. “The Blackstones… I knew they’d resist the reforms, but to threaten open rebellion?”
She’d not expected that. Not even in her wildest dreams. Lindholm’s only human ducal house had ever been wilful, and their antipathy towards the Orcs who dwelled in the Sunlands was well documented, but surely even they could see why Yelena was doing what she was.
Regardless of what her critics said, her decision to end the slave trade in Lindholm was most assuredly not the result of ‘useless sentiment’.
Far from it.
Oh certainly, Yelena had no love for the institution of slavery, for reasons both moral and financial, but that wasn’t why she’d created the abolitionist movement.
With each passing year, the Homeland’s view of Lindholm grew ever more covetous. More and more the Sun Empress and Desert Khan’s rhetoric centred less on their ongoing deadlock with each other and more on the idea of ‘recovering wayward territories’.
Certainly, that could have been a reference to Old Growth as much as Lindholm, but Yelena doubted it.
Lindholm might have scared the Solites and Lunites into retreating by choosing to engage them over deep water, but ultimately those victories were borne of a lack of conviction on the part of her foes.
Had the two disparate fleets been willing to risk the permanent loss of a small portion of their mithril cores in order to achieve victory and push towards the mainland, they may well have been able to flip the allegiances of a number of Lindholmian houses.
Oh, certainly, the high elves and dark elves of Lindholm might have prided themselves on maintaining the strictures of equality that defined the Old Empire – but with either Solite or Lunite airships hovering over their family castles, she couldn’t help but wonder if some might reconsider their stances on their fellow elves.
No, while an invasion of Lindholm would certainly be costly, it was entirely within the realm of reason.
An invasion of the Old Growth however?
There was a reason the Wood Elves – as they named themselves – had managed to remain independent of both the other two, much larger, nations despite sharing land borders with both of them.
Their strange magics might have been muted and weak beyond the borders of their home, but within their territory they were nigh invincible.
No, if there was to be any ‘reclamation’ of any territory belonging to the old Aelven Imperium, it was likely to come from Lindholm.
To that end, the kingdom could ill afford to keep feeding people and iron into the meatgrinder that was the Sunlands. Could ill afford to keep orcs that might otherwise be valuable mages laboring in the fields under the eyes of watchful taskmasters.
Lindholm needed every mage-knight it could get – regardless of the color of their skin or the shape of their ears.
Yet after year and years of negotiations and attempts to shift public opinion on the matter, the North still remained willfully ignorant of that truth.
“Surely they know that even if they win, any kind of division between us will just see the Homeland sweep over them?” Joana said.
Yelena shrugged. “I have a feeling that Duchess Blackstone’s victories over both the Lunites and Solites has left her confident of repeating the fact should it come to that.”
Foolhardy, in her eyes, but no one had ever accused the Blackstones of being meek. Nor being incapable of backing up their sometimes insane claims. What other House could lay claim to an ancestry that had once beaten back the Old Imperium at the height of its power?
Where other human nobles had been sworn into the Old Imperium on their knees with their battered armies scattered to the winds, the Blackstones managed to resist long and hard enough that the Imperial Legions had been forced to come to the negotiating table.
Ultimately, the Blackstones had still been absorbed into the Empire, but they’d done so on their terms with their heads unbowed.
…Though it was somewhat ironic that nearly a thousand years on, it was now those same humans in the position of the old Imperial Legion while it was the free orcs who now utilized the same strategies as the old Blackstone tribes – right down to the Wyvern riders.
“I could imagine that,” Joana muttered.
“Is it strange that I think she might pull it off?” Yelena said – though only because she was sure that no one beyond her friend and silent guards was listening.
“Part of me wants to argue that, but… do you think it’s a human thing?”
Yelena thought about the Blackstones and the young man who’d just turned down a chance to be king one day.
“Perhaps,” she admitted.
Personally she thought it was because humans didn’t live as long – and there was more of them. When your life could be measured in but a single century, perhaps you were a bit more inclined towards taking risks that might make an elf balk?
…Risks like trying to take your first year team up against a third year team in the name of trying to avoid a war.
Or at least delay it.
“I still can’t believe he said no to your offer,” Joana said, something… complicated in her friend’s expression.
Yelena grinned at the sight, though she wrestled down the urge to ask a number of probing questions of her normally straight laced friend, who seemed to have a childish crush on a young man nearly ten years her junior – and her student beside.
Normally she’d be all over a scandal that delicious.
Alas, right now was work time. “I can. He gave me his reasons and they were solid.”
Well, solid enough. If you squinted a bit. And tried to think ‘human’.
Rather than all-but guarantee a war by having the Crown break off his betrothal, he intended to do it himself.
Loudly and publicly.
And if he won – and that was a big if – he’d all but destroy any kind of excuse the Blackstones might have to declare war in response. Indeed, by being ‘shamed’ in such a public manner they’d need to spend a few years at least regathering lost support.
After all, who would want to follow a house into a civil war just after their heir was publicly humiliated by a team of cadets two years her junior?
Academy fights weren’t just schoolyard squabbles. They were civil conflicts writ small. A microcosm of the constant jostling and jockeying of Lindholm’s houses.
In other words, they held weight.
If Willaim could beat his fiancée, Yelena knew she’d owe him more than she could ever truly repay. A few more years of preparation would turn an almost guaranteed defeat into something much more even.
Especially if she could scoop up who knows how many mithril cores that were otherwise just littering the ocean. Ninety percent of them would be of limited use immediately, but a few years would give her time to construct at least a few more airship hulls to house the devices.
All that was required was for William to win.
“Solid,” Joana scoffed. “His plan is to go up against a group of third years with a team of firsties.”
Yelena tried to keep the intensity she was feeling out of her tone as she leaned forward. “You don’t think he can do it?”
Joana opened her mouth before hesitating. “I… normally I’d say no. Talented as they are, the gap in experience is just too wide.”
“But…”
The dark elf rolled her silver eyes behind her glasses. “But, with William’s newest invention…” The woman paused. “Son of a bitch.”
For just a moment Yelena was treated to the rare sight of her friend laughing. “I can’t believe I thought he ‘just wanted to use it in a schoolyard fight’,” the Instructor said.
“Well, he sort of is, in a way.” Yelena shrugged. “It just so happens to be a very important schoolyard fight.”
Joana laughed. “I suppose it is.”
“Still, do you think he can win?”
Joana straightened up. “I genuinely don’t know. With his new invention he might be able to catch her off guard. If he can skew the numbers in his favor at the start, they might have a chance.”
Yelena frowned. Not exactly the ringing endorsement she wanted to hear, but that was part of why she valued Joana’s friendship.
Always had really, even when the girl had first come to court at the age of ten as a potential playmate for Yelena’s daughters and told her that her dress made her look like some kind of tropical bird.
Something Yelena realized upon closer inspection was true.
Ever since, the Queen had made a point of checking in with the girl from time to time, if only for the occasional shot of unvarnished truth.
It was a strange ‘friendship’ from the outside looking in, but one that got less so as time went by and the age gap became less stark.
“Well, let’s hope the human capacity for the nigh impossible isn’t relegated entirely to the Blackstones,” Yelena muttered.
Because if it wasn’t, the boy would either have to marry one of Yelena’s daughters or die.
She could not afford the knowledge in his head to reach the Blackstones. To that end, he’d either accept her offer – rolling the dice on the onset of war and all that might come with it – or he’d suffer an accident.
As much as it pained the royal sovereign’s heart to see such a bright and enterprising soul be snuffed out before its time.
Being forced to make such decisions was simply the price of wearing the crown.
“Still,” Joana said, and Yelena was grateful for the distraction as she looked up. “Will you actually leave him alone if he pulls this off?”
Yelena scoffed.
“Of course not. If anything I’ll up my offer.” She shrugged. “I’ll give him you, myself and half my court if it means getting my hands on what’s in his head.”
It was actually a little amusing how Joana flushed at her words, even as she shook her head.
“Yes, that sounds a lot more like you.”
Yelena nodded. Damn right it did.
Though as she did, a thought occurred to her. “Hey Joana?”
“Yes?”
“In your reports to me, didn’t you mention the Ashfield boy having some kind of nickname.”
The dark elf pondered the words for a moment before stiffening. “Hmm, he does actually. A rather apt one considering. Apt enough that I’m wondering if whatever he used to kill Al’Hundra is related.”
“Well, don’t keep me in suspense. What is it?”
Joana leaned back, her head craned upwards, as if seeking strength from above.
“Kraken Slayer.”
Yelena laughed. She couldn’t help it.
“Of course it is.”
“You killed Al’Hundra.”
William was still reeling a little from the conversation he’d just had, so he was actually a little caught off guard by a finger being shoved into his face the moment he stepped back into his teams quarters.
Ah, he thought. I promised answers.
Though it seemed that in his absence his team had managed to figure out some of those answers without him.
Glancing past Olzenya’s outstretched arm, he saw Marline shaking her head – as if to vehemently deny she’d told them anything.
She needn’t have bothered, her geass precluded it as an option. Hell, even once everyone found out it would preclude it as an option.
Which was for the best for the moment because now he wasn’t so much trying to hide what he’d done as how he’d done it. Admittedly, Marline didn’t know anything beyond the broadest details, but she knew enough to know that it was some kind of enchantment combined with alchemy.
Now it was possible the forces working against him – or rather simply to profit off him – had already figured that out and he’d hear the alchemy lab exploded any moment now, but he’d sooner put it off for as long as he could.
To that end, he turned to Olzenya – though not before politely lowering her pointing arm.
Something that, to her credit, the high elf allowed – actually looking a little embarrassed by her outburst and thus rudeness.
“Honestly, I was expecting something like that to come from Bonnlyn, not you,” he said to the slightly flushed high elf.
As he glanced over toward where the dwarf was sitting, she shrugged. “I realize I may not be the most classically polite individual around, but I’ve been a merchant long enough to recognize when someone’s got a trade secret they want to keep close to their chests.”
If anything, Olzenya flushed harder, as while she might not have been familiar with trade secrets, she was most definitely familiar with the notion of house spells that needed to be kept secret.
“I also thought ambushing him at the door was a little rude,” Verity murmured from the back of the room.
Olzenya coughed, before backing up. “Of course, I apologize for that William.”
More bemused than anything else, especially as the elf curtsied, he waved a hand dismissively. “It’s fine. Or, understandable, I guess.”
“Good,” Ozlenya smiled, glad for his acceptance… before she shouted again. “Because you lied to us.”
“I did?”
“He didn’t,” Marline said. “He said he had something to bet against Tala.”
Indeed he had, something he’d kept hidden under a sheet. After all, he’d not wanted his big surprise to be spoiled by the rumors of his coming beating him to the cafeteria.
And they would.
Rumors in the academy somehow managed to move at light speed.
“He implied it was gold,” Olzenya shot back.
“And you said Tala wouldn’t go for it, but you came with us anyway,” Bonnlyn said.
Indeed, he had implied it was gold. Or ‘something valuable enough to catch her interest’.
“To comfort him after she shot him down,” Olzenya said. “Instead I damn near tripped over my own feet in front of everyone when he pulled an honest to goddess mithril core out of his ass.”
William was actually a little thrown off – and amused – by the sudden display of crassness from the noble girl.
“But he didn’t lie.” It was actually a little surprising – and heartwarming – to hear Verity speaking so forcefully.
And that Olzenya didn’t immediately snap at her for doing so. The team really had come a long way in just a few months.
Ah, the joys of shared suffering, William thought as he watched the girls bicker amongst themselves.
“As I’m sure you’ve all guessed, I have indeed been less than open about a few things,” he said, silencing all of them – except Marline who’d yet to speak in the first place. “With that said, I’ve never once lied to you about my end goal.”
“Breaking off your betrothal,” Marline said finally.
“Breaking off my betrothal without starting a war,” he said. “If it were that easy, the Queen would have done it for me just now.”
“You met the Queen?” Olzenya sounded a little faint.
“I did.”
Oh, how he did.
“Oh ancestors, please don’t tell me you hit on the queen!?” This time Marline sounded a little faint.
And he actually felt a little offended. “What!? Why would you think that.”
“You’re doing the same thing you do when we talk about Instructor Griffith,” Bonnlyn said with studiously neutral voice. “Or Instructor Morline. Or Instructor Flen. Or some of the guards.”
“Or that one cafeteria lady,” Verity chimed in, a little red in the face.
“Or the-”
“I do not!” He’d finally had enough of these aspersion on his character.
Across the room, a number of sighs rang out, even from the elves.
“At least now I knew why he never checked me out,” Bonnlyn said. “He’s got mommy issues. And I’m not old enough to tickle them.”
“Still, the Queen?” Olzenya hissed.
“I mean, have you seen her?” Marline muttered back. “I mean, I don’t agree with him… but I get it.”
“I didn’t ‘perv’ on the Queen.” Some part of him died on using such childish language. “We had a meeting about my plans and… what occurred with Al’Hundra. Needless to say, the fact that I’m here means she’s agreed to go ahead with them and I’m also to keep quiet about anything I may or may not have had to do with any Kraken going missing. Or their cores.”
He deliberately left out the royal marriage offer.
Still, with those words the room went silent. After all, if the Queen had told him to say nothing, he was expected to say nothing. Just because the North in general didn’t have much respect for royal authority didn’t mean the rest of the kingdom did.
Quite the opposite.
“Well, if the Queen has commanded you to remain silent, I suppose there’s nothing to be done,” Olzenya muttered. “Though I would like answers some day.”
“Hell, I’d like to know why you brought Marline in on your plans,” Bonnlyn said, glancing at the Dark Elf. “You know, and not the rest of us.”
There was no missing the hint of hurt there – which he understood.
“I can promise you it was purely a matter of convenient circumstance,” he said. “And I can promise you, I didn’t confide in Marline for free.”
All the girls glanced up as the dark elf nodded slowly. “He’s not lying – though I can’t say anymore. Literally. It’s a price I paid willingly, but one I doubt any of you would be interested in.”
Almost as one, he could see the lightbulbs turn on in everyone’s brain simultaneously – except for Verity, who took a few seconds.
‘Geass,’ thought none of them said it.
This time though, when the girls looked between him and Marline, there was a definite sense of wariness to it.
“Well, I suppose there’s nothing else to say then,” Bonnyln said. “I guess we should…”
“…Go to bed,” Olzenya nodded warily.
William grinned. “Good idea. Big day tomorrow and all that.”
That was an understatement, and he could tell everyone was thinking it as they made their way over to their rooms.
Still, it was true all the same.
They’d need their rest if they wanted to stand a chance tomorrow.
Indeed, they’d need every advantage they could get.
To that end, William could only hope he’d stacked the deck in their favor enough to matter.
…It took him a long time to get to sleep.
When he did awake, in the early hours of the morning, it was to the sound of an explosion.
In the direction of the old alchemy labs if I’m not wrong, he thought with a grim smile.
It seemed someone had decided to investigate his storage room even sooner than he’d anticipated.
Annoying, but it hardly mattered at this point in time.
All that really mattered was going back to sleep.
He had a big day ahead of him, after all.

2024.05.15 14:47 Traditional-Front836 Conklin Duragraph

Conklin Duragraph
So, I'm from Toledo Ohio and had never heard of Conklin before. This seems strange to me because Toledoans love to talk about how good Toledo used to be. You would think that a company, so important to the history of any industry, would be more common knowledge for locals at least.
Anyway, I got into the hobby around last September and went bananas with it. As soon as I discovered Conklin, I thought "Hey, I'm from Toledo, I should have a Conklin or 6". We'll, I went and bought this Duragraph and it sucked to write with. I then received a Toledo as a gift and it sucked to write with. Then, I bought a Coronet (now discontinued) and it sucked to write with. I figured, maybe I should track down a vintage Conklin and see if everything about Toledo has always been terrible.
I then purchased a vintage Endura (1930s I believe), it's amazing. I picked up an Endura ring top (1940s ish?) It's amazing. And I got my hands on an early 20s Crescent. You guessed it. Amazing.
Well, I did a little research on how to tune a pen and with a little deep cleaning and very minor adjusting, the Duragraph and Toledo have really turned out to be great writers as well. I broke the nib on the Coronet so it obviously doesn't write well yet but I have high hopes now.
I should point out, the modern Conklins are beautiful and feel very well made (imho).
The point of this unnecessarily long post is to set the stage for the following question.
Why does Yafa not put more effort into quality control on Conklins? I would happily pay the extra $10 per pen, it would cost to cover the extra labor, to not have to do the work myself.
To demonstrate, this is my Duragraph that I had left the cap off for about 7-8 minutes while I made a pot of coffee. No hard starting, no railroading, no issues at all. All I did was pick it up and start writing.
Apologies for the terrible handwriting.

What was happening with computers and automation around the time this episode originally aired:
In 1960 a science technology TV program aired an episode titled "The Thinking Machine". Here's a 3-minute video excerpt from the hour-long program
The science technology episode of 'Tomorrow', coordinated with M.I.T., aired on CBS in early 1961. The full show can be viewed on YouTube for free running 53-minutes
From Forbes magazine July 18, 2019:
By 1958, the nation had entered the “Automation Depression” in which “we are stumbling blindly into the automation era with no concept or plan to reconcile the need of workers for income and the need of business for cost-cutting and worker-displacing innovations.”
Four years later, President Kennedy was asked in a news conference “Mr. President, our Labor Department estimates that approximately 1.8 million persons holding jobs are replaced every year by machines. How urgent do you view this problem–automation?” Kennedy’s response? That “it is a fact that we have to find, over a ten-year period, 25,000 new jobs every week to take care of those who are displaced by machines, and those who are coming into the labor market … in particular industries we might get special structural unemployment. We have seen that in steel, we have seen it in coal, we may see it in other industries … I regard it as the major domestic challenge, really, of the ‘60s, to maintain full employment at a time when automation, of course, is replacing men.”
Richard Deacon was born May, 14, 1921 in Philadelphia. When he was 11, he was afflicted with polio and later took up dancing to help strengthen his legs. In his teens, the Deacon family moved to Binghamton, New York. Richard Deacon was actually a classmate of Rod Serling. Largely due to his early polio scare, Deacon became an intern during high school at Binghamton General Hospital and later served in the Army Medical Corps during World War II.

Richard Deacon was typecast as a middle management authority who rarely received respect from either end of the employment spectrum. Two words that adequately describes the frequent acting persona: prissy milksop. Deacon's two longest and most notable TV roles – as Lumpy’s dad on “Leave It to Beaver” (1951-1963) and Mel Cooley on “The Dick Van Dyke” show (1961-66) – overlapped by two years.

A big, brawny villain of many 1940s and 1950s films, Ted de Corsia was an actor in touring companies and on radio before making a memorable film debut as the killer in The Lady from Shanghai (1947). Although he occasionally played such sympathetic roles as a judge or prison warden, de Corsia's imposing size, tough New York street demeanor - he was born and raised in Brooklyn - and gravelly voice assured him steady work playing murderous street thugs, outlaw gang leaders or organized-crime bosses.
