2024.04.02 18:28 MCK40 Sedona and VOC Residents Thoughts and Feelings on the area?

I’ve been visiting Sedona since about 2003, have been there at least 20 times, staying anywhere from 4-7 days at a time. When I first stated going there the community felt different. Of course there were us tourists, but it didn’t seem overrun. As the years went on it definitely moved in a direction that to me, as an outsider, would raise the ire of locals. Housing prices seemingly out of control, people buying properties only to cash in on the rental and vacation market, traffic and development claiming and destroying the beautiful landscape, poor behavior on the part of visitors, etc…. In the last 10 years, I myself feel that I can understand the sentiment of locals I’ve spoke to who seem to have a very different opinion from us outsiders. I thought at one time that perhaps I’d want to move there, but the vibe just seems very different now, and it’s sort of lost its appeal to me. When I go, I simply love the beauty of the land. I hike mostly, enjoy the town’s restaurants, try to patronize the local shop owners and just try to respect it for what it is. I know that business has to thrive for many reasons, but do locals feel it’s reached the tipping point? What do you still love about it? What would you change or even regulate? Where do you see things going? I know a lot of the people who work in the area do not live in Sedona proper, but you are obviously part of the community. I’ve been apprehensive about returning, because of the changes. I guess I’m just interested in hearing how you all feel, toward the “progress”, visitors, etc…. I’m thinking of maybe staying in Flagstaff or OCC next time I’m out there. Anyhow, that’s all.

2023.12.11 06:15 ZodiacSpeaks143 The Case of Robert Matthew Bockmann- A Troubled Life Left Unfinished: A Cold Missing Persons Case

The Case of Robert Matthew Bockmann- A Troubled Life Left Unfinished: A Cold Missing Persons Case
Anxiety, depression, trauma (ptsd), addiction, unresolved angst can altogether, or separately (as they stand as their own entity, and they should not be thought of as "all the same thing") can lead to quiet, more self-afflicted moments riddled with desperation or to jarring momentous occasions where there is no going back. I urge that if you are having thoughts of suicide, self-harm or hurting others to please reach out to anyone no matter how hard (in this moment) it may be to muster the words I need help. Whether it is family, friends, that one coworker that listens intently or calling the 988 suicide prevention number that is currently available or even 911, help IS available.
I thought I would mention this seeing as the case I'm talking about today of Robert Matthew Bockmann involves talk of self-harm, suicide and potential suicide scenarios. Please take care while reading.

As I'm writing this, thinking about what kind of a person Robert Bockmann was, a thought floated into my mind: The gentle hum of anxiety is heard by all, it's ebb and flow differ from person to person as it's tenacity and resonance can vary from a whisper... to a scream.
Robert Matthew Bockmann disappeared on April 18th, 2003 at the age of 26, his car was found abandoned along South Boulder Creek Trailhead near Walker Ranch in Boulder, Colorado. His family believes that suicide is a possibility, just 3 days before he vanished, Robert and his brother met for dinner and was reportedly acting "strange and incoherent". He has not been seen or heard from again.
Robert Matthew Bockmann was born November 11, 1976, and is also known to go by "Robbie" as well. A self-taught prodigy of the guitar and known as an avid songwriter, he is often described as musically gifted by loved ones. Before his move to Colorado, Robert previously lived in Texas and studied psychology while at Tyler Junior College, which I found interesting because it makes me wonder... if he was aware in general, as well as in those quiet moments where he may have felt mentally suffered and drained, of what he had learned in college about psychology? Was he just constantly overanalyzing his life all the time or quietly self-diagnosing himself, allowing room for incoherent and intrusive thoughts to siege his vulnerable mind? Robert seemed to be juggling various battles and thoughts in his mind. It is believed that he was overcome with a severe depression after the war in Iraq broke out while also simultaneously dealing with a divorce, which then lead to the separation from his 3-year-old daughter. It's absolutely heartbreaking and I cannot imagine what he was feeling or perceiving himself as in those moments. Eventually, for Robert it became difficult to maintain a steady job which most likely led to him being unable to support his young daughter also. Whether all this was the reason for his move to Colorado from to Texas weeks prior to his disappearance or not is unclear and I do not wish to assume why. I will say that his choosing to be closer with family, his mother and brother in Colorado, tells me that he may have been seeking comfort in dark times. His brother said approximately 3 days prior to him vanishing (April 15th, 2003) the two had dinner together but Robert was reportedly "incoherent". It is unclear what that means as there is little said about that interaction between the two brothers. Whether drugs or alcohol factored into his behavior, or he was suffering a mental health crisis at that time is not made clear. Again, it is unimaginable to have the hindsight of that interaction in mind as Bockmann's brother. I hope his family finds peace one day, as well as answers to quell their broken hearts.
Last seen:
Bockmann was last seen while vacationing at a resort in the Rocky Mountains in Boulder, CO. A strange bit I found in an article reports that the day he disappeared, Robert bought flowers for a friend saying he was going for a bike ride up Flagstaff Mountain (I will attach pictures). What is the significance of the flowers for the friend if any? Who were the flowers for? After that, he was not seen or heard from again. News developed the day after he vanished, his silver Dodge Neon (Texas license plates) was discovered abandoned at the South Boulder Creek Trailhead near Walker Ranch. His wallet was discovered and inside was found to be $50 as well as his ID. It was indicated that no signs of foul play were discovered in or near the car.
  • Bockmann was last seen wearing blue shorts, a white t-shirt with an oval-shaped logo, and either blue running shoes or new Vasque trail running shoes, according to the Colorado Bureau of Investigations Cold Case Files website.
  • Bockmann was a white male with blue eyes and strawberry-blonde hair. He stood at 5’10”, weighed 170 pounds and had a muscular build at the time of his disappearance.
  • Identifying Marks: Left inner forearm long scar from wrist to elbow due to suicide attempt. May have marking on forearm bones due to knife as the cut was significant and deep. Muscular build best describes Robert Matthew Bockmann.
Theory: (Warning: mention of suicide and suicide scenarios)
Both Robert's brother and father believe that he may have taken his own life by possible jumping off a cliff with the sole intention that his body not be found or quickly made apparent. Perhaps to spare his family or the person that were to find him from a grim discovery. Long and extensive searches took place to find any sort of remains of Robert's body, no signs of any remains were uncovered. This terrain is steep and dangerous for anyone experienced or otherwise, its rocky, rugged and uneven. Bears and mountain lions are also known to inhabit the area- giving possibility that his remains may have been carried away by predators. Identifying marks indicate Robert attempted suicide before (a jarring scar from wrist to elbow) left deep scars, so deep that his forearm bones may have markings if remains are uncovered.
Agency: Boulder Police Department - 303-441-3600
Agency Case #: P03-5616
NamUs Case #: 7855

Thank you for reading, I hope my intention in spreading the word about Robert's case is made clear and apparent in this post. There is little coverage about his case, most articles sticking straight to the basic facts: he struggled with depression, suicide, divorce, child separation, moved to Colorado, dinner with brother appearing incoherent, claimed he was going for a bike ride, disappeared, abandoned car found, never seen again. What I wish these articles focused on more was that Robert was more than just his struggles. He was a gifted musician and song writer (perhaps he didn't realize the extent of his full talent as we all do sometimes, and life got messy and it was put on the backburner) as well as a beloved father, son, brother, friend. I wish I had a chance to meet him as I too have had struggles with those dark intrusive thoughts myself, and the empathy I feel for this man hurts my heart. I wish I could have gotten to know more intimate details about Robert other than the very few and minimal snippets I read about him. His life read as tragic and stressful, but I wanted to know more about his relationship with his daughter, who his friend was that he bought the flowers for and why, and memories his mother, father and brother have of Robert, old and recent. Despite his troubles, Robert seemed thoughtful, kind, empathetic, and giving perhaps to a fault.
If you have ANY information or know someone that might please contact the Boulder Police Department at 303-441-3600.

Robert Matthew Bockmann (not the clearest photo but it is one of the only two on the CBI Cold Case website)

An aerial view of Walker Ranch and South Boulder Creek (starts at the lower end of Gross Reservoir). The terrain differs but is more mountainous in general.

A broad view of Walker Ranch and South Boulder Creek and how wide the scope of search would be in terms of searching for Robert.
A closer view of Flagstaff Mountain, obviously very rugged and uneven terrain.

Satellite view of how grand and wide Flagstaff Mountain is (where Robert said he was going for a bike ride) is in close proximity to Grant, CO

Redneck counterspace solution +
This post is a 2 part, first part is a counter space solution, the second is updates to a previous post.
  1. No counter space, literally none in my 2003 Forest River Flagstaff. I love to cook and was going absolutely crazy. Guess what, cant anchor securely into these paper mache walls, so i got creative. Using carriage bolts, 2x4s, marine grade sealant, remnant counter of marketplace and help of salty full timer I added in my redneck counter. No, it does not leak, i used 3M 5200 adhesive sealanton the carriage bolts (disregard the strip of flextape visible under on of the carriage bolts, that was from an oopsie trying to get an anchor and my drill went a tad to far). The L brackets shown were temporary as was the 2x4 leveling the counter. I didnt get a picture but i ordered 24inch brackets and installed those. No, the foldout bed is not usable, it wasnt being used anyway but now its great quick access storage. The backsplash is made of old fence i picked up for free on marketplace, bleached it, sanded it, sealed with poly.
  2. Last 3 Photos added for questions regarding my RV skirt post.

Hello CFB! Welcome to the 2023 Big XII Uniform Tracker in Week 1! Ladies and gentlemen, FOOTBALL IS FINALLY HERE! I am just ECSTATIC. In case you are unfamiliar with how my tracker works, I catalog every Big 12 team’s uniform combination week-to-week, and also look at the opposition’s threads. I also compile our future institutions in Arizona, Colorado, Arizona State, and Utah. I provide a few of my thoughts on the game, the uniforms, and a brief history of the rivalry and/or fun facts. (Sorry if the tracker feels so long, I didn’t anticipate covering 18 teams come September!) This week our teams start a long season, dueling against some exciting teams. And WOW were there some terrific games. Let's see how they fared, what they wore, and discuss how they looked as well! Thank goodness it is college football once again!
I’m u/matte_purple, and lets 3,2,1 go!

University of Central Florida Knights vs Kent State Golden Flashes (UCF Wins, 56-6)
UCF: Gold/Black/Black (Link: https://imgur.com/a/Dic1H9H )
Kent: Yellow/White/Blue (Link: https://imgur.com/a/64iS7zK )
The very first Big 12 game of the season came from a school in Central Florida, of all places. Strange times we live in. But I sure am glad to see John Rhys Plumlee and the Knights whip up on the Golden Flashes, racking up 723 yards of total offense. Nothing else to say, except for a hearty congratulations to the Orlando boys on their Big 12 debut! UCF wore these same suits twice last year, against Louisville in a loss and Georgia Tech in a win. These are in the upper tier of UCF’s regular uniforms, for sure. While I’m not a huge fan of the pegasus logo, I love the front-facing knight that's all grayed-out. The back lettering on the names is also a little hard to read for a night game. I’m also a big fan of the unique stars on the pants in lieu of a stripe. Great look for UCF!
I have covered Kent State’s uniforms before, in their loss to OU last year in Week 2. And similar to that game, these uniforms are simply too busy. The weird “harness stripes(?)” with the school name on it, the Kent State logo on the center collar with the supplementary logos scrunched close to it, theres a lot going on. On the bright side, I like the helmets. Very stylish, and far better than the helmet worn last year. Fun fact, did you know Nick Saban graduated from Kent State? Saban played DB under coach Don James from ‘70-’72. Another interesting aside, Kent State was known as the “Silver Foxes” from 1920-26, but began calling themselves “Golden Flashes” after the president of the university (and founder of the Silver Fox epithet) was fired after moving to no longer accept any transfer credits from other universities.

University of Kansas Jayhawks vs Missouri State University Bears (KU Wins, 48-17)
KU: Blue/Blue/Blue (Link: https://imgur.com/a/nAZFREU )
Missouri: Gray/White/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/bTPU2ZE )
This time last year, KU was playing against Tennessee Tech in what would end up becoming a pretty great season for the Jayhawks. The ceiling is significantly higher for KU this year. Just like last season - smoking the Golden Eagles 56-10 - this game showed a high power offense, KU running over the Bears 48-17. Preseason Big 12 OPOY Jalon Daniels was not under center for the game due to back tightness, but his backup QB Jason Bean still did a great job. The Jayhawks and Bears were neck-and-neck in the first half, but KU ran away with the game in the second half, scoring 31 points to the Bear’s 7.
Onto the uniforms, the Bears wore a very classy look. What can I say, I like the gray. The only strange detail were the maroon shoulder lines flanking the collar. While those were a little odd, they are unique and don’t detract from the uniform too much. The rest of the uniform is fairly standard, but I sure do like the maroon abstract logo with the gray backing.
New Uniform Alert! KU refreshed their look in July, releasing their uniforms to wide acclaim. They look clean and modern, perfect for a team that has some high expectations this year. While the new Adidas template as a whole has lots of teams looking similar, you really can’t go wrong with the classic meets modern uniform they’ve been putting out. I’m not quite sure I’m a fan of the all blue everything, but I love the block text, the bold Kansas on the front, and a noticeable lack of Trajan Font! Please, KU Athletics, don’t use that on a football helmet ever again. I hear we may see a special uniform next week for the Jayhawks, so stay tuned!

TCU Horned Frogs vs University of Colorado Buffaloes (CU Wins, 45-42)
TCU: White/Purple/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/tUZlrza )
CU: White/White/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/sdcaWRQ )
Wow. I don’t even need to tell you how this game went. It’s been posted everywhere. This one was circled on the calendar for a long time, even BEFORE the great realignment scourge. A classic Big 12 story, am I right? I know this game will get lots of discussion here, so I wont beat a dead horse and we’ll just move onto the uniforms.
Last year, Colorado wore a traditional helmet with a “semi-throwback” that honored 1970-1972 WR and NFL Hall of Fame inductee Cliff Branch. This year, they switched it up (obviously, as last year was a home game in Boulder). They wore their all white stunner, which is the first time a white helmet has been worn since 2019! I personally love this look. It’s such a role reversal. You think of CU and you think of the iconic black and gold. The gold numbers outlined in black made the look. These are excellent. Very excited to track them this year.
TCU wore more white than I had expected, but I’m pretty sure every TCU home opener for the past few season has opened with this combo. Must be a little tradition. The TCU v CU matchup last year landed on my Season Awards list - nabbing 3rd best OOC uniform matchup. There definitely wasn’t as much contrast in the matchup this year, but both teams looked very clean. I especially liked the shiny silver and purple chrome on TCU paired with that sweet, sweet CU gold. No noticeable changes from last year, except for the Horned Frog on TCU’s lids having a red eye. Nice touch!

University of Oklahoma Sooners vs Arkansas State Red Wolves (OU Wins,73-0)
OU: Red/Red/White (Link:https://imgur.com/a/45AZx0Q )
ASU: White/White/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/O1U5b9t )
Arkansas State has played Big 12 teams off and on for quite some time, most recently inflicting blows to K-State (2020) and UCF (2016). This week, the Red Wolves had a chance to bid farewell to a team exiting the Big 12 before they play their Sun Belt schedule. Sadly, OU was ready to avenge last year’s season. The Sooners trounced the Red Wolves 73-0, QB Dillon Gabriel putting on a show. In fact, it was OU's largest margin of victory in a season opener since 1917. Maybe the rest of the Big 12 should watch out for the big bad Sooners.
The classic OU crimson can’t be criticized. Just an all-time look, and it sure does work. Arkansas State, on the other hand, looked… off. I think the three things that weirds me out are the black stripe across the center of the helmet and the small and skinny font of “Arkansas State” on the chest. The crying wolf logo always weirds me out. It looks like it was released in 2008 after rebranding from the Indians. I like the “Patriot Stripes” on the shoulders. Otherwise, a very, very simple and clean look. Not the worst I’ve ever seen.

Iowa State Cyclones vs University of Northern Iowa Panthers (ISU Wins, 30-9)
ISU: Red/Red/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/I7kvMH9 )
UNI: Purple/White/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/Ybj3SN0 )
The Panthers of Northern Iowa made the trek 100 miles southwest to Jack Trice Stadium in this home state classic. UNI has never played a home game versus the Cyclones, but have won in Ames before, with a total record of 5-16 against the Loyal Sons of ISU. Make that record 5-17
If you can’t tell by my flair, I happen to love purple uniforms. These are no different. The Panthers had different uniforms the last time they beat ISU, in 2013, but I can’t tell you when they were refreshed. These are pretty basic by most standards, except the striping on the pants, which seems a tad out of place. They are reminiscent of the 2012-ish tapered strip worn by loads of teams, but the Arizona Cardinals come to mind first. While I’m not a fan of that, I do like the helmet. UNI has experimented with multiple helmets, but I most prefer the one released in 2022, which they are wearing here. It looks like other purple renditions but has a lighter outline around the whole logo. It’s a look that pops, and I’ve definitely seen uglier helmets. Good work to the Panthers!
I dog on Iowa State’s uniforms, but a lot of that is the rivalry talking. They wore a similar White/Red/White combo versus SEMO in their home opener last year, and I have the same thoughts. The font is different for sure, but it represents the wind current of a Cyclone, and adds the right amount of uniqueness. I think the front is a little busy, especially with the Captains patch. I think it would be a neat touch to move the Jack Trice logo where the Block I logo is. Otherwise, great execution for both teams.

University of Texas Longhorns vs Rice University Owls (Texas Wins, 37-10)
UT: White/Orange/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/i9lPRx7 )
Rice: Blue/White/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/1yDN3kX )
Texas, like every year, has some big shoes to fill. The bar is high for the Longhorns this year with Quinn Ewers at the helm. Those expectations did not slow down the Burnt Orange Faithful. While the Horns were a little slow in the first half, they worked out the kinks and grabbed 21 points in the third quarter alone. WR Xavier Worthy led all receivers with 7 receptions for 90 yards. Ewers finished the game with 3 TDs and 260 yards on 30 attempts. Nothing feels better than 1-0.
Rice wore a mostly white look, tacking on a blue helmet with the gothic “R” logo and a gray facemask. But I’ll be honest, have some of the most bare-bones jerseys I’ve ever seen. Aside from the logo on the helmet, which is fine, there’s nothing else on these uniforms. No stripes, logos, or fun aside from “RICE” on the front. Stormtrooper uniforms only work if you add a little extra flair. Texas has burnt orange, just splash a tiny bit of blue in there somewhere, ya know? Speaking of Texas, they had some minor changes to the look last year, namely they got rid of the TV numbers on their shoulders and removed the ‘Horns logo in the center. Texas hasn’t changed anything since. Still the gorgeous burnt orange we see each season!

Kansas State Wildcats vs Southeast Missouri Redhawks (K-State Wins 45-0)
K-State: SilvePurple/Silver (Link:https://imgur.com/a/jP8AbjS )
SEMO: Black/White/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/NkHQ5aH )
The reigning Big 12 Champions had a day against the Redhawks. QB Will Howard joined a list of only 5 other Big 12 QBs who have a rushing, passing, and receiving quarterback in a single game. Howard did it in one quarter. The last QB to do it was Jalen Hurts in 2019. There is still plenty for K-State to work on. Will Howard had one pretty egregious interception, and some starters were out due to injury in camp. But the Wildcats looked good. Of course, their suits looked good, too! K-State is not known for their alternates, and this game was no different. Silver sandwiching purple is a good look, if a little traditional. Maybe we’ll see some fun helmet alternates, but EQ manager Al Cerbe has gone on record saying he likes what Bill Snyder started. Oh well, the ol’ reliable does it again.
SEMO wore a new uniform than what I saw last season! I liked the upgrade! They improved their shoulder striping to something more classic, but also added a slightly vintage “faux-collar” stripe. Different, but not in a bad way, and one of the better Under Armour templates out there. I think the black helmets really sealed the combo. A nice logo accented in red, encased by that sharp black against the silver K-State wears. SEMO has a bright future ahead of them, as defending Ohio Valley champions, who are ranked as high as No. 9 in some FCS polls, the “Brick by Brick” on the back helmet bumpers (the unofficial mantra of SEMO HC Tom Matukewicz) really holds true. Let's see how they play against Lindenwood next week.

Baylor University Bears vs Texas State University Bobcats (Texas State Wins, 42-31)
TSU: White/White/Maroon (Link: https://imgur.com/a/KLnFiKO )
BU: Yellow/Yellow/Green (Link: https://imgur.com/a/CAJbGWJ )
Baylor had a disappointing season last year. After winning the conference title in 2021, they faced a challenging road schedule, injuries, and a gauntlet at the end of the 2022 season. And then this game happened. Texas State was a 27.5 underdog to the Bears. Last year, Baylor beat Texas State 42-7 in Week 3, but this year the Bobcats struck back and clawed their way to a 42-31 victory in GJ Kinne’s FBS debut. Kinne brought in 71 new transfers and notched Texas State’s first ever win against a P5 opponent. But well wishes go out to Baylor QB Blake Shapen, who will have an MRI for a knee injury soon. A tough loss for Baylor, but good motivation for next week’s home game against the Utah Utes.
Last year the Bobcats wore an all-white look that was incredible. Maroon and gold are a great complement to one another. This year, they rocked some maroon pants which were okay. To make up for the whelming pants, Texas State put some gold chrome on both their helmet logo and helmet stripe, which they’ve added off and on since the logo was revamped on helmets in 2003. I really, really like this addition. Looks like we know who claims the real gold color! My favorite little detail is the traditional helmet warning sticker filling in an outline of Texas on the back of the helmet. It’s just neat! Baylor did not disappoint and went with a never before worn combo since the 2019 refresh. Damn, it looked nice. Baylor really messed up last year, wearing far too many all green uniforms. It’s nice to see some variety.

Oklahoma State Cowboys vs University of Central Arkansas Bears (OSU Wins, 27-13)
OSU: White/Orange/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/icF0b59 )
UCA: WhiteWhite/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/vA9usFT )
Okay, I was hyped to see this matchup. Not just because of OK-State’s new and improved uniform look (which was already one of the best in the Big 12), but also because I love the UCA Bears. Conway is home to three institutions of higher learning, earning it the nickname City of Colleges. UCA, Hendrix College, and Central Baptist College are all fantastic universities in a fantastic town. But I digress, OK-State has a lot to prove this year, and they did okay against ASUN’s middle-of-the-pack Bears. The game was a little closer than I expected, likely owing to a three QB shuffle from OK-State, but they found steady success.
The Cowboys wore their brand new refreshed uniforms in the home opener classic, Orange and White. The Pokes have worn a white helmet to start since 2016. These things are beautiful. Essentially the modern version of the 1980s style, with OK-State on chest in “barbed wire” font, numbers on shoulders for the first time since 2005, and those clean retro stripes, wow. While I am sad the Phantom Pete logo is gone from the pants, you can't beat the classic brand. I am also glad they removed the gray cowboys stripe from last year and kept the pants clean. Absolutely incredible. All while paired with the classic OK-State brand logo helmet. These won’t be my favorite look, but they are very, very nice. My one complaint is the new Nike template pushes the chest text down a little further than it should be.
Onto the Bears, I really love the striping on the helmet paired with the purple logo, but I wish there was more of that striping incorporated throughout. These uniforms are really pretty plain otherwise. Fun Fact: UCA’s women sports teams are called the “Sugar Bears.” I love it.

West Virginia Mountaineers at Penn State University Nittany Lions (PSU Wins, 38-15)
WVU: Blue/White/Gold (Link: https://imgur.com/a/mYipbxZ )
PSU: White/Blue/White (Link:https://imgur.com/a/HS95olX )
This was the first time these two regional rivals played since meeting every year from 1947 until 1992. Penn State’s deep, experienced roster is expected to contend for the Big Ten championship, which left the Mountaineers very little wiggle room. Penn State outpaced WVU 405-198 yards through three quarters and a stalwart Penn State defense forced four punts and three turnovers on downs. WVU QB Greene played relatively mistake free but didn’t get a lot of help from his skill players, who went 10 of 18 on attempts. The Mountaineers will have to do something quick, but hopefully they can wrap it all together before playing Duquesne and Pitt at home.
WVU wore their classic blue helmet and tossed in a little bit of color with their yellow (gold) pants. This combo was worn once successfully since their refresh, and the record for it is now 1-5. I like this look. WVU tends to have some pretty tame combinations, but they really know how to spread around the different combinations to good effect.
Penn State has some divisive helmets. It seems to be a 50/50 split on the plain white helmets. They have done a good job of basing their brand off of it, similar to an Alabama-type. Penn State has not had a logo on their helmets since the university’s football program was born. I like the history, and I like the commitment. It takes a special team to become iconic for simplicity.

University of Houston Cougars vs UTSA Roadrunners (UH Wins, 17-14)
Houston: White/Blue/White (Link:https://imgur.com/a/72iNnZh )
UTSA: White/White/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/ULyU1is )
Drip alert! I knew Houston would be hot this weekend, but I didn’t know that applied to the uniforms! Let’s not get ahead of ourselves. In this battle of new conference members, the Big 12 won out, with ex-TTU QB Donovan Smith completed 22 of 34 attempts for 233 yds without a turnover. Pretty dang good for such a low scoring game. Houston also had three picks, and while Houston’s kicker Jack Martin missed one FG, he redeemed himself with one that ended up putting the Coogs over the top.
Obviously, the Cougars uniforms are an homage to the hometown football team, the Houston Oilers. These are incredible. I love the special emphasis placed on the striping. For one thing, it’s consistent through the entire uniform. I also love the sharp “Houston” font used here, also used in Week 1 against UTSA last year. I really can’t say anything more about them. They are excellent. The look is a tribute to the rich history of a football-mad city, not a reminder of a franchise leaving a fan base behind. Perfect for a Big 12 opener!
The Roadrunners wore icy whites for their trip to Houston. While the numbers and “UTSA” on the front aren't my favorite style, I just get a kick out of the shoulders. The Roadrunner logo in blue differentiates the uniform from every other “stormtrooper” uniform out there, while making the school the focus. It's whimsical and menacing at the same time. *Chef’s kiss*

University of Cincinnati Bearcats vs Eastern Kentucky Colonels (Cincy Wins, 66-13)
CINCY: White/Black/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/NFUEFDF )
EKU: Red/White/Red (Link: https://imgur.com/a/1rDf4F2 )
Admittedly, I didn’t get to watch this game, so I’m flying by the seat of my pants on this one. Cincy had this one pretty well in the bag right off the bat, scoring 21 in the first quarter to EKU’s zero. It was downhill from there. In less than three quarters, QB Emory Jones hit five different receivers going 19 of 23 for 345 yds. While he was at it, he ran for two TDs, accounting for seven total in Nippert Stadium. Fun fact, The Bearcats have won 22 consecutive home openers. Three of those opening victories have been against EKU's Colonels. Tough luck for the Colonels!
Cincinnati donned new uniforms in their Big 12 debut, and I really like them. They look very modern. My favorite touch is the bright red outline that really pops against the simple black jersey. ANd I know it's a controversial helmet choice, the supposed white lid curse and all, but this looked very, VERY good. Nice font, I think that the C-Paw being on both the “Cincinnati'' wordmark and the collar AND the pants is a little overkill, but it's a small gripe. This is one of my favorite “normal” looks in the new Big 12.
EKU had a pretty standard set, seems like a pretty plain Nike template. I like the color! I did some sleuthing on the mascot and found some fun tidbits. Eastern athletes went by the moniker “The Maroons.” until 1963. They tried to switch to “The Leopards,” in an attempted mascot change during the 1920s. However, a plan to buy a leopard from a zoo in Memphis fell through, and we remained The Maroons. In 1963, President Robert Martin altered the mascot to The Colonel, in an attempt to tie the university to the 1812 based Honorable Order of Kentucky Colonels, the philanthropic brotherhood closely tied to Kentucky’s governorship. Neat!

Texas Tech University Red Raiders at University of Wyoming Cowboys (WYO Wins, 35-33 2OT)
Tech: Black/White/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/aZI8NYF )
WYO: White/Yellow/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/MzYjZkY )
Two rough-riding, stubborn horsemen draw their pistols on a windswept prairie. One donning a neckerchief of yellow, the other a bandana of red. I am a sucker for quintessential western schools duking it out on the gridiron. And my goodness, did this deliver. An absolute barnburner that went to 2 OT, Wyoming’s QB Andrew Peasley completed an 11-yard touchdown pass to TE Gyllenborg on a fourth-and-7, and RB Sam Scott found the 2-point conversion as Wyoming smoked Texas Tech 35-33. HC Craig Bohl said it best: “Peasley is tough as boot leather.”
Wyoming is always trashed as having horrible colors. But I actually like the color scheme. Especially this combo. Paired with gold and accented with beautiful white helmets, not fancy, but classy with an element of toughness that embodies their home. I’ve always liked the Bucking Bronco logo, it’s identifiable and proud. The font is also old-timey and fun. In fact, the entire population of the state identifies with it, making these uniforms are about as close to perfect as you can get for a football team in Wyoming.
TTU wore a fine combo. I think that Texas Tech’s throwbacks are so damn good that every other combo they put together is just okay. I think black pants might have made this look a little more finished, but the weird split color shoulder and leg stripe turns me off of these.
Lots of people said Texas Tech was going to be special this year, and boy I am starting to see it manifest. Even with the hard loss and some tough mistakes, this was a tough environment against a pretty rough and tumble team. Maybe I’m being easy on them, but it could well light a fire under them when they play Oregon next week.

Brigham Young University Cougars vs Sam Houston Bearkats (BYU Wins, 14-0)
BYU: Blue/Blue/White (Link:https://imgur.com/a/85SZSwm )
SHSU: Orange/White/Orange (Link: https://imgur.com/a/yGDchGr )
Saturday’s game was the fewest points scored by BYU in a victory since a 6-3 win over Utah State in 2012. There were worse performances by Big 12 teams, but this game was a little bit of a slog. But let’s keep things positive: this was the Cougars’ first shutout since they beat Savannah State by 64 points in 2014 and first over an FCS opponent since they blanked Hawaii in 2012. 1-0 is not a bad spot to be. Next week vs Southern Utah (who we just saw) will be another litmus test for this squad.
The Sam Houston Bearkats are a new addition to the FCS, and I really am quite smitten with their style. It seems like they managed to find an orange that has not been used in college football yet, which I am very happy about. Other than that sweet color, this seems like a pretty bare-bones combo. SImple logo, but my favorite bit was the (936) on the front helmet bumper, which is of course the area code for Huntsville, Texas. Did you know the Bearkats play for the third oldest institute of higher education in Texas? Pretty neat. BYU wore arguably my favorite look of theirs that I’ve covered. I mean DAMN. Those white pants really accentuate the color so well. Maybe not the most traditional look BYU has in its arsenal, but still very nice.

BONUS UNIFORMS! Let’s have a look at our future four-corners Big XII teams as well!

University of Utah Utes vs University of Florida Gators (Utah Wins, 24-11)
UTAH: Red/Red/Red (Link: https://imgur.com/a/XMMgFwm )
GATORS: Orange/White/Blue (Link: https://imgur.com/a/Mkw4sh9 )
Thursday night football, baby! This game has already been talked about to death, o I’ll go ahead and move onto the uniforms.
Red is such a tricky color to pull off as a block. Meaning, all-red uniforms are either really good or really bad. I don’t like Iowa State’s look, but I think Utah tends to add enough black to their suits to break up the aggressive color scheme. The unique striping is also a welcome change. I will say, I think I prefer a white helmet for the Utes, but I’m also not privy to the traditions as much. Hopefully I can learn more about them before their official entry next year.
Florida released a uniform schedule before the season, so if they ever show up again, I’ll know exactly what they are wearing. This suit seems to be their most common away uniform, and its a classic! I love the cursive Gators logo, outlined in blue. While I’m not normally a fan of tri-tone outfits, I think I can make an exception on this one. Also, I like that the color scheme speaks for itself. No “Florida” or “Gators” on the chest speaks to how recognizable the brand is. Also, Jordan school. Cool.

Arizona State Sun Devils vs Southern Utah University Thunderbirds (ASU wins, 24-21)
SUU: White/White/Red (Link: https://imgur.com/a/HeBsWzK )
ASU: Yellow/Maroon/Yellow (Link: https://imgur.com/a/nVQ8xZl )
While this isn’t the first time we’ve seen ASU on the tracker, I couldn’t be happier to cover them as Big 12 members. I have some family in the Southwest that roots for the Sun Devils, and I’ve always had a soft spot for the maroon and gold clad. ASU won against the Thunderbirds, but it was not a pounding like the fans might have hoped for. The sandstorm and rain delay did not do the Sun Devils any favors either. But a 1-0 start means Dillingham has some good material to start with in Tempe. Dillingham was a terrific recruiter and offensive coordinator at a high level for several years at Memphis, Auburn, Florida State, and Oregon, but now he really gets to grow into his own program. He’s also a Valley native and an ASU graduate, so here’s hoping for a good tenure.
ASU released new uniforms under the new regime! They wore what I consider to be their standard look, but with a twist! Since the 2011 rebrand, the Sun Devils have always worn their traditional gold/maroon/gold combo for the first home game of the season. The old uniforms had a sublimated Arizona flag on their front that was removed in favor of a simpler design. But don’t worry, the flag still makes an appearance on the sides of the uniforms. I also love the Pat Tillman shield on the collar. A departure from the chrome maroon and gold scheme from last season, the helmet features standard matte maroon decals with gold trim and a thin maroon border. The main issues I have with the new look are as follows: the flag, the pants logo and the shades of gold. The sublimated flag on the front of the jersey was excellent, and moving it feels a little odd. The large pitchfork on the pants is another strange addition. I think a smaller, more traditional logo on the pants would have fit better and helped tie in the different combos ASU uses. The Adidas/Pac-12 logos are a pale gold, the helmet being brighter, and numbers on the chest and back have a flame pattern that intentionally has varying shades in it, ending with the pants, which are pretty close to matching the helmet’s shade. This is really only noticeable in the close shots, though, so I’m not horribly peeved. Other than those few small gripes, what’s not to love? Arizona State has always been a strong uniform contender, and we will have lots to talk about throughout the season.
SUU had some pretty simple but clean uniforms. I won’t talk about them too much since I gushed over ASU, but the no frills red pants, professional looking white helmet with a good clean logo, and plenty of red sprinkled throughout. The “Southern Utah” on the chest is a little low because of the template, but we’ve seen that with a few teams already. A great fight from the Thunderbirds!

University of Arizona Wildcats vs Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks (Arizona Wins, 38-3)
U of A: White/Blue/Blue (Link: https://imgur.com/a/om5nxAD )
NAU: White/White/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/EeDHTpj )
Well, well… another Wildcat fan base joins the Big 12 fray. The Tuscon boys met up with the Flagstaff crew for a late game by Big 12 standards, and the result was a drubbing. Arizona limited NAU to 264 yards while forcing a turnover, recording eight tackles for loss, making three 4th-down stops—one on the goal line—and blocking a field goal attempt that was returned for a touchdown. QB Jayden de Laura accounted for 4 scores, three passes and a long TD run, finishing with 332 yards of total yards that included 255 on 18 of 24 pass attempts. They wore their revamped “Desert Swarm” look brought back in 2021, and they look great. There’s a reason that they returned, it’s because they are iconic.
The Lumberjacks have a LOT going on in their suits. Let me get to the good first: That throwback logo is BEAUTIFUL. Based on the 1968 primary logo, these look so good. Their helmet was one of my favorites from the whole week’s tracker. Now the bad (and maybe the ugly). The weird mountains (maybe?) on the side of the pants, the collar has a black and yellow braided cord design, and there’s a random blue spot on the shoulders. Now I get it, maybe it sounds like I’m picking on the little guy. That couldn’t be further from the truth. I think NAU and Flagstaff are awesome places to visit. Fun Fact: The elevation at street level is 6,880 ft. above sea level, the highest among NCAA Division I FCS football stadiums. The Lumberjacks is also a fantastic team name, with tons of options for iconography. But they aren't exempt from uniform scrutiny! Simple is sometimes better.

Aaaaand that’s all folks! Week 1 is all wrapped up. The first week in what is going to be, I’m sure, the best season of football yet. I apologize for the length of the tracker, but hopefully it was a fun read! Please let me know if you find any mistakes, and they will be remedied quickly. What did you think about the uniforms from this go-around? Let me know in the comments! What is your team going to wear next week? As always, thank you for your support, can’t wait to see you next week in the Big 12!

2023.07.24 17:41 DeKam34 Get to Know the FCS 2023: Big Sky

History
The Big Sky was founded in 1963 as a basketball conference to represent Rocky Mountain schools in the western states of Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Washington. The name originated in a novel written by A.B. Guthrie of Great Falls, MT, entitled “The Big Sky”. There were six founding members: Gonzaga, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, and Weber State. Four of these (Idaho State, Weber State, and the two Montana schools) have been continuous members of the conference, and have sponsored football every year since 1963.
Gonzaga as we all know doesn’t have football, and given they haven’t since 1941, they were never a Big Sky football member. Then we have Idaho. Idaho didn’t play football in the Big Sky until 1965, after being ordered by the conference to start playing the conference schedule. The reason for this initial difference in Idaho’s case was because of their long-time history as a member of the PCC and the “University” division of football (essentially Division I), while the other schools had played in the “College” Division (the non-Division I schools). Idaho remained playing the highest level as an independent until 1977, although they did play a full conference schedule against Big Sky members.
In 1978, when division I football was split into I-A and I-AA, the Big Sky Conference jumped from Division II up to I-AA. Since then, it’s been a stable member of the subdivision and a consistent participant in the FCS playoffs.
The Big Sky Conference was a landing spot for many schools up and down the Rocky Mountain region and indeed most of the Mountain West region. The first conference expansion happened in 1970 when the conference added Boise State and Northern Arizona. Gonzaga would leave the conference in 1979, but was replaced by Nevada. In 1987, Eastern Washington joined the conference, re-adding Washington to the list of states covered.
1992 would see the beginning of the most tumultuous realignment period in the Big Sky’s 60 year history as Nevada made the jump to I-A football and left for the Great West. Idaho and Boise State would make the same decision four years later in 1996. In response, the Big Sky added three new members: Portland State, Sacramento State, and Cal State Northridge. This was the first time the conference’s regional footprint had been dramatically expanded. PSU and Sac State are still members, but Northridge was a mediocre fit at best, and left the conference again in 2000, dropping football a year later.
Since that odd footnote of Northridge’s Big Sky existence that ended in 2000, the Big Sky has added six football members. In 2006, Northern Colorado came into the Big Sky only shortly after a jump from Division II. In 2012, a large swath of four new members arrived; Southern Utah and North Dakota as full members, UC Davis and Cal Poly as football-only members. In 2014, Idaho rejoined the Big Sky for all sports except football, but in 2018 the Vandals became the first football team to drop out of FBS for FCS football and rejoined the Big Sky as well, replacing a leaving North Dakota program. Southern Utah also played their last season as a Big Sky member in 2021, leaving for the WAC. This means the conference now sits at 12 teams.

2023.07.02 04:17 Junior_Button5882 9 Cryptid Monsters of Arizona

9 Cryptid Monsters of Arizona
Most locals have heard of the Mogollon Monster, but descriptions of exactly what kind of creature it might be has changed over the years. A rash of sightings of a particular type of creature would make that animal a sort of "Mogollon Monster du jour."
As a result, this author will not give the title of "Mogollon Monster" to any of the following six that live in northern Arizona. Instead, it is hoped that people who might have seen these strange creatures and are afraid of coming forward might learn that they are not alone in their experience.
Some of these monsters are truly bizarre, but every one of them has been seen in other locations on our planet. The first six have all been seen in northern Arizona.
If asked today, most residents would think that the Mogollon Monster is Bigfoot. However, if one were a purist, the first account of the Mogollon Monster, recorded in the Arizona Republican in 1903, describes something else:
1. TrollA man "named I.W. Stevens reported seeing the creature near the Grand Canyon. '(It had) long white hair and matted beard that reached to his knees. It wore no clothing, and upon his talon-like fingers were claws at least two inches long.' Upon (closer) inspection, he noted ‘a coat of gray hair nearly covered his body, with here and there a spot of dirty skin showing.' He saw the creature drinking the blood from two felled cougars and when it saw him, it picked up a club and screamed at him." (*1)
Thought by many to be a medieval fairy tale, the Troll has been spotted in european forests for centuries even to this very day.
Perhaps surprisingly, the most recent recorded sighting of a Troll on the Mogollon Rim occurred late in 2013 and was posted by Cryptozoology News: (*2)
A 28-year-old woman believes she came across an unidentified animal...while hiking the Canyon Point trail located in the region of the Mogollon Rim.Y. Estevez, a sociology student who claims she was alone at the time of the incident, says she saw a “troll” looking creature drinking from a pool of water.“It was on its knees, drinking water, when I found it. Drinking, making noises like a pig, so at first sight the animal looked like a pig to me."But upon closer inspection, she saw that "it had long hair, grey and bluish, and I swear it looked like one of those trolls from a fairy tale. Ugly stuff. The face was human looking, no hair on it, but full of bumps. The eyes were kind of a brown-red. Thick big nose, small lips. No expression on its face at all. It then took off running like a person.”
There are some intriguing photos of a troll on the Mogollon Rim that were taken with a wildlife camera. Although these images are copyrighted, the reader can view them on the original website by clicking here (Sorry, copyright owner changed this link to immediately send people to a bunch of annoying ads so I had to take it down.) (*3)
2. Bigfoot
Evidence and sightings of Bigfoot in Arizona are so frequent, it would take a book to cover them all. The Bigfoot Research Organization (BFRO) lists at least 32 sightings in Coconino County (*4) and at least 8 reports of Bigfoot in Yavapai County (*5), but these listings are hardly inclusive of them all.
During the 1980's, evidence of a Bigfoot living in Hell Canyon (near Drake, AZ) was reported by some deadwood harvesters.
"We use to cut firewood in the Kiabab National Forest (and) saw many tracks, many times." Additionally, a possible living quarters was discovered. "The site that was most bizarre was (a) cave with a very big tree...covering the entrance." (*6)
"Often, reports of the elusive beast involve a piercing, sometimes deafening scream or howl unlike that produced by any known wildlife. (*7)
"Those who say they've crossed paths with the beast regularly describe an eerie silence prior to their encounter, an appreciable stillness in the woods that commonly surrounds predatory animals. more common are reports of a strong, very foul stench, which has been described as that of dead fish, a skunk with bad body odor, decaying peat moss and—by someone with an exceptionally keen sense of smell, apparently—the musk of a snapping turtle." (*7)
Local Indian legend believes that some Bigfoots leave the Mogollon Rim in the wintertime for the Sierra Prieta mountains of the Prescott National Forest. (*8)
"The Native American people living in (the) area, (particularly) the White Mountain Apache Nation, have had encounters as well. In 2006, Collette Altaha said, 'We’re not prone to easily talk to outsiders, but there have been more sightings than ever before. It cannot be ignored any longer.' Marjorie Grimes, a resident of nearby Whiteriver, said, 'It was all black and it was tall! The way it walked; it was taking big strides. I put on the brakes and raced back and looked between the two trees where it was, and it was gone!' (*1)
"Tribal police lieutenant Ray Burnette said, 'A couple of times they’ve seen this creature looking through (their) windows. They’re scared when they call (us)...They weren’t hallucinating, they weren’t drunks, they weren’t people that we know can make hoax calls. They’re from real citizens of the Fort Apache Indian Reservation.'” (*1)
\*UPDATE: Bigfoot Near Prescott?*The author, a recreational hiker, never looks for signs of Bigfoot. However, while hiking west of Thumb Butte, he was surprised to find a mysterious "tree-break." Many Bigfoot researchers believe these tree-breaks are a sign of Bigfoot's presence and a potential marking of his territory. However, the author readily admits that what he found was "Class C" evidence at best and it would not convince a single skeptic.
The break on the pine pictured was just shy of 8 feet off the ground. Although shadows of other trees are deceiving, no actual logs, rocks, or fallen trees were anywhere near the broken pine to explain how it was snapped.
If this damage were caused by a "micro-burst" or "dust-devil," why wasn't the adjacent tree damaged? It stood only inches away. Was it a bear? Could be. But why would a bear climb this tree when other, far sturdier ones were right near by?If this WAS from a Bigfoot, one would expect some other signs--perhaps other tree-breaks. The author started searching and did not find anymore fresh breaks, but he did find what could be old breaks.
For the most part, the ground at this location is generally very hard and often shallow. However, in certain places one can easily find the tracks of rabbits, coyotes, deer, javelina, even an occasional mountain lion. This author had never seen a bigfoot track (and perhaps still hasn't,) yet close by the broken pine, he found this impression in the ground:
3. Giant Jack Rabbit
Now for perhaps the LEAST intimidating monster on the list… The Giant Jack Rabbit!
Perhaps the idea of a giant jack rabbit grazing about northern Arizona forests may seem outlandish, if not humorous, but such an animal undoubtedly did exist, at least in the past.
Archeologists have discovered fossils of "Nuralagus Rex," which could easily be described as a giant jack rabbit, on most of the earth's continents. (*9)
"The 26-pound (12-kilogram) prehistoric species was about six times bigger than the common European rabbit...according to an analysis of several bones." (*9)
As late as 2006, "residents of Felton in northeast England have confirmed that a huge, floppy-eared creature is leaving behind giant paw prints and a trail of destroyed carrots, leeks, onions, and turnips following nighttime raids." (*10)
As far as northern Arizona goes, "author and Bigfoot researcher Mitchell Waite says that his team spotted the giant jack rabbit, but claim that when they attempted to capture it on video, the camera 'malfunctioned' unexpectedly.' (*12)
“'The rabbit was sitting near the water tower,' he said. 'It was watching me, sat on its hind legs with ears up.'
"This lagomorph creature, he claims, has been spotted by 'several witnesses' in the past." (*12)
Could the Nuralagus Rex have continued to survive in the forests of Arizona?
4. The Aswang
Near the town of Two Guns, AZ, inside the Apache Death Cave, lives the Aswang--a shapeshifting vampiric creature that was first sighted hundreds of years ago in the Philippines.
It makes a sound like a rattlesnake, has razor sharp claws and sucks unborn fetuses from its prey. It's sometimes been mistaken for the chupacabra, (particularly since it most often shape-shifts into a dog.) However, the Aswang is able to flatten its body like a mouse to get through tight squeezes--perfect for cave dwelling.
Disturbingly, pregnant cows near Two Guns have recently been found dead with their fetus calves missing. (*13)
Aswangs are shape-shifters. Stories recount aswangs living as regular townspeople. As regular people, they are quiet, shy and elusive. At night, they transform into creatures such as a cat, bat, bird, boar or most often, a dog.
Reportedly, they enjoy eating unborn fetuses and small children, favoring livers and hearts. Some have long proboscises, which they use to suck the unborn out of their mothers' wombs when they are sleeping in their homes. Some are so thin that they can hide themselves behind a bamboo post.
  1. THE RAKE
Making its home in the Grand Canyon Caverns near Peach Springs, AZ, The Rake is a nocturnal, 9 foot tall flesh-eater. Its claws are supposed to be as long as a human's fingers! It is a deadly, pale, human-like monster that gives off a high pitched scream. (*13)
"Sightings and encounters with the Rake have allegedly been reported since the 1800's. Several diary and journal entries have been found which documented the horrifying attacks of the creature. At least one person who committed suicide in the 1960s left a suicide note that mentioned the monster." (*17)
One of the stranger characteristics of this creature is its ability to shut-off electricity. Peach Springs has suffered such strange power outages recently even when the weather was calm. A bar owner named Brian related that he closed his bar early at 2 am due to a strange power outage. Hearing a commotion near the garbage, Brian looked over and was surprised to see a grayish humanoid figure that he described as definitely "not human". (*13)
A former gravedigger named Jeremie related seeing a gray-white humanoid figure dart by as he was working at his old job at he Peach Springs Cemetery. (*13)
One can rent the Grand Canyon Caverns for the night. There are hotel accommodations located in the cave if one dares. (See tourist tips, below.)

6.The Olitiau

Although few have heard of the Olitiau, it has been spotted all over the world, including the Amazon rain forest. (*13)
The only known sighting of the Olitiau by a scientist occurred in 1932 by famed explorer and cryptozoologist Ivan T. Sanderson in the Cameroon, Africa rain forests. (*16)
"While exploring a river system in the Assumbo Mountains...Sanderson and his hunting partner Gerald Russell were reportedly attacked by an Olitiau as they were shooting smaller bats along a stream." (*16)
Described as a giant avian creature with a wingspan between 10 to 12 feet in length, this "king of the bats" is reportedly most active in the twilight hours and lives in caves and volcanic lava-tubes. (*13)
In northern Arizona, this fearsome killer purportedly lives in the lava-tubes surrounding Humphrey's Peak near Flagstaff. (*13)
One recent witness named Angela saw the Olitiau while driving through Oak Creek Canyon on State Route 89A. When the beast noticed her, it took off into the air and disappeared. (*13)
Another recent witness is a veterinary assistant named Addison who described a local pet that was brought in. It looked like it had been dropped from several hundred feet far away from any heights. (*13) Could it have been dropped by an Olitiau? What could have caused such a situation?
7. The Thunderbird

https://preview.redd.it/hmkislrdog9b1.png?width=400&format=png&auto=webp&s=dade889e92ee07ce83f06ca4d02c92029482dff4
8. The Reptoid
In early February, 2014, a group of 3 bikers saw a reptilian humanoid in the Sonoran Desert. "It's about 6-foot tall, very very skinny, and it had an awkward gait, like a monkey," one witness said. (*17)
"He stopped and it made eye contact with me and I could see him clearly. The eyes were kind of like a snake's, but black and with a yellow stripe in the middle of the eye. It had green and red scales on the face and head. The red color was kind of like the same as the desert sand there, and it looked like it had a sandy texture too. It didn't have a nose, only two holes on it. I couldn't see any ears or hair. A red mouth that looked like it had blood around it, but it didn't look like it was bleeding, it looked like a pattern. It reminded me of a chameleon, but it looked like a person too." (*17)The creature raised its "long arms with strange looking claws that looked like a branch full of thorns" and waved at them, emitting a loud chattering sound with its teeth. Then it rapidly ran away," leaving the trio in shock. (*17)
9. The Chupacabra:
One of the first reported sightings of a Chupacabra happened in Tucson. "Two men were roused out of bed by the loud shrieking of their goats. When they went to check and see what all the commotion was about, they saw a weird looking beast on top of one of the goats. This dog-like creature looked at them an unleashed an eerie screech and then scampered off." In 2003, there was a second Tucson sighting similar to the first. (*19)There are many legends in Indian lore of strange creatures living in Arizona, one wonders how many could be true.

Hi! This is a light blue 2003 Vespa ET2 for sale for $1200 OBO. It has a lot of trouble starting, especially when it's cold. I think it would work, it just needs to be towed to a mechanic for it to work reliably, since it goes max 33 miles an hour. I have a lot of reason to believe the part that's giving me trouble is the tank filter, but I am unable to take it to a mechanic since I have no car to tow it. The automatic start button also does not work, so it requires a kick-start for now. When it runs, it runs fantastic. It has treated me well over the summer, but my use for it has passed now that I've moved into a dorm within walking distance of everything! The front tire is like new, the back tire needs to be replaced, and the left mirror is loose. The Vespa comes with a tool-kit and cargo box. The cargo box needs to be treated with care. If you're going to purchase this, another important note is that it's good to ride it frequently to make sure that it has no trouble starting in the future. If you're good at working on this sort of thing, this is the vehicle for you.
Thank you for considering this! Please message me with any questions you have, and I'm also completely willing to schedule an in-person visit so that you can see it. The price is negotiable.

2022.11.17 19:45 matte_purple Big XII Uniform Tracker Week 11: The Gang goes Big Game Hunting

Hello CFB! Welcome to the 2022 Big XII Uniform Tracker in Week 11! Wow, I had a good week. But I am terribly late to the tracker! So, I apologize for my delay. But man, the Big XII is primed for an intense finish! TCU looks even more impressive, the Cowboys are turning it around, WVU is dashing hopes, and Tech is regaining steam. With such high stakes, we’ll have a look at the suits our teams wore in Week 11! Time to put on some music for the occasion.
Music: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oi3QmAmrG6M
I’m u/matte_purple, and lets 3,2,1 go!

Oklahoma State University Cowboys vs Iowa State Cyclones (OK-State Wins, 20-14)
ISU: Red/White/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/loFhC3R )
OSU: Black/Black/Black (Link: https://imgur.com/a/AN6aTUK )
The Cowboys notched their 14th consecutive victory in Boone Pickens Stadium while simultaneously breaking their losing streak against the teams from Kansas. This is despite the Cowboys being 1/14 on 3rd down against ISU. The Cyclones turned the ball over 5 times, crippling an already demoralized offense. Quarterback Hunter Dekkers threw three interceptions, RBs Shaw and Silas each fumbled once. Add that to Spencer Sander’s miraculous return in the 3rd quarter (9/13 for 84 yards and a 14-yard go ahead TD pass) and ISU slinks to 1-6 in the conference. It kind of seems like I’ve watched the same ISU game every single week. Hopefully we see a spark in the next few games.
This was an eye bleach kind of game, but you know what wasn’t eye bleach? The uniform matchup! The Pokes wore all-black, the first time they have gone all-black this season. OSU is 9-4 all-time when wearing all-black duds. I personally love these. OK-State is best when they wear mostly orange, but damn, these are just so nice paired with the bold orange. And an important caveat, black is an official color for the Cowboys! The selection of orange and black by the university in the late 1890s was a tribute to a popular faculty member whose father was a Princeton graduate (they were even known as the Tigers for a few years). I am interested to see what the Cowboys will wear for Bedlam in Week 12.
The ‘Clones have worn this combination before, but not this season. This is probably my favorite away combo from them, with that nice cardinal helmet popping against the all-white. In my humble opinion, ISU should wear these more often down the road. The contrast for this game was downright immaculate!

University of Oklahoma Sooners at West Virginia University Mountaineers (WVU Wins, 23-20)
OU: Red/Cream/Red (Link: https://imgur.com/a/yZpIUvM )
WVU: Blue/Blue/Blue (Link: https://imgur.com/a/BGA2uiI )
12-6 at half and rain bringing the atmosphere and playability down gave the second half a bleak outlook, but WVU rose to the task and beat OU in Morgantown for the first time since they entered the conference. OU has had back-to-back 10-win seasons since 1998, when they went 5-6. This is the first time OU has been in such a slump since then. WVU has proven that they can still compete, but Neal Brown’s future is still uncertain despite the win. The Mountaineers will need to stay sharp this week, as they face the Wildcats from Kansas in WV on Saturday.
The Sooners wore alternates again! I was a tad surprised to see them trot out in the Rough Rider alternates after we saw the “Unity” uniforms earlier this season, but it is tradition, as OU has worn one of these Rough Rider suits once a year since 2014. “Rough Rider” is a reference not to Theodore Roosevelt’s badass crew, but rather the nickname of Oklahoma squads in the 1890s. The Sooners actually introduced them back when they were a Nike school, and I guess they liked it enough to keep it with Jordan. The helmet and shoulder pads feature a wood grain pattern, the helmet has a cream stripe, gray facemask, and cream accents throughout. I personally love the crimson and cream color scheme. It’s just different enough from the traditional white that gets worn, but I really don’t vibe with the wood grain. I know it honors the era of Bud Wilkinson, the legendary OU coach who won national championships in 1950, ‘55 and ‘56, but I just really don’t like it. Oregon State can rock it because of their ties to the lumber industry and Beaver mascot, but I just don’t see it for OU. Fun fact: the uniform also features "47 Straight" stitched onto the inner neckline, in recognition of Wilkinson's record college football winning streak. They end up becoming fairly meh uniforms for me.
WVU broke out a new all blue combo this season, and also tossed in some extra flair with the star-spangled West Virginia state outline on the hat. While not my favorite overall color scheme from the Mountaineers - I like a bit of gold thrown in – the military appreciation logo would clash with it. I’ve constantly stated my love for American flag logos, and this one is no exception. I doubly love the look in the rain. Cheers to the ‘Eers.

#4 Texas Christian University Horned Frogs at #18 University of Texas Longhorns (TCU Wins, 17-10)
UT: White/Orange/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/mAEz6CE )
TCU: Black/White/Purple (Link: https://imgur.com/a/1LXdV0y )
Texas was heralded “back” by national media after a one game sample size, but they were no match for TCU. This was a defensive game, something not expected from two of the Big XII’s offensive leaders, but still proved to be a good one. The Horned Frogs held Texas running back Bijan Robinson to 29 yards, gave up just 199 total yards, and forced Quinn Ewers into a miserable passing night. The Frogs allowed Texas a single field goal on consecutive drives inside the TCU 10 in the second half, with the remainder of the points coming from a 48-yard scoop and score. Quinn Ewers is a good QB, but he is still a year one QB in Sarkisian’s first year at UT, and TCU’s defensive unit didn’t help either. The Frogs have clinched a spot at Arlington after beating the Longhorns, who go on the road to visit their archrival KU.
I am very appreciative that TCU has continued to wear these helmets. Their game against Texas marked the fourth time the “Bane of the Big XII” helmets have been worn this season. They have slowly grown on me as the season has gone by, and TCU has the one uniform color scheme that may actually be better as a tricolor. This is the third time TCU has worn purple pants though, if you are tracking that sort of thing.
Texas has had no discernable change in their home uniforms this season, and that is still for the best. Somebody has to have the two-uniform rule in the conference, and Texas makes classic look good.

Texas Tech University Red Raiders vs University of Kansas Jayhawks (TTU Wins, 43-28)
KU: White/White/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/him4GBr )
TTU: Red/Black/Black (Link: https://imgur.com/a/u5H6zmM )
Did you guys know Tech is 5-1 at home this year? Lubbock’s tortilla tossing crowd has cultivated one of the more competitive environments in the Big XII this year. The Jayhawks managed to claw back to trail 27-21 at halftime and 33-28 with eight minutes left, but a strip sack deep in their own half doomed the Lawrence crew. KU technically remains in the Big 12 championship hunt. The Jayhawks beat both Texas and K-State, KU would finish 5-4 and could win a tiebreaker with some help, but all things considered, KU has had an INCREDIBLE season.
What did I say? Way back in Week 5 I said, quote: “I am ECSTATIC I haven't seen the ‘KU’ wordmark logo on a helmet this season. Please keep it that way! Seems like when you take that logo off the helmet, you start winning.”
Is it a coincidence that KU lost while wearing the KU Trajan on their helmets? Maybe. Maybe not. If it was a Jayhawk, not only would it have looked cooler, but it would also have satisfied the uniform gods. Other than the helmet, the all-white looks absolutely dashing. I especially dig the white facemask. KU has still been a dark horse in the Big XII style world, at least they can lose looking classy. Speaking of class, Tech wore a very clean look. Much like KU’s look, I only have one complaint: The red double T clashes with the red helmet. I personally think Tech should not even have a red helmet, but the colors do look good regardless. This is the second time we’ve seen a red helmet for the Red Raiders, the last time coming in Week 3. Texas Tech faces ISU in Ames next week and hopes to get bowl eligible.

#19 Kansas State University Wildcats at Baylor University Bears (KSU Wins, 31-3)
KSU: SilveWhite/Silver (Link: https://imgur.com/a/SyUjZm9 )
BU: Green/Green/Green (Link: https://imgur.com/a/LlWGuCb )
K-State's 31-3 rout of Baylor on Saturday night was not as impressive as the Wildcats’ 48-0 victory a few weeks ago, but both thrashings were led by one man: Will Howard. After Adrian Martinez went down with an unspecified injury in the 1st quarter, the backup QB Howard came in and butchered the Bear’s secondary, throwing 19/27 for 196 yards and three TDs. Deuce Vaughn had a 20-yard TD catch and 106 rushing yards, making him the 3rd KSU RB with consecutive 1,000-yard seasons. Baylor’s three points mark the fewest K-State has allowed a Big XII opponent on the road since Iowa State in 2003. Even if Adrian Martinez is out for multiple games, the Wildcats are prepared to defend their spot as second place in the Big XII. This must have been OC Collin Klein’s retribution for 2012.
K-State has now had SIX night games, with one more on the schedule against KU at the end of the regular season. The uniforms haven’t changed a bit, but that gleam from the stadium lights never gets old.
Baylor fans are getting restless. The fans were expecting a surprise blackout uniform reveal and were instead greeted by another all-green uniform. While it again looks good, this is the fourth time all green has been worn this season. It is by far the most worn uniform the Bears have. Even though I’m not a huge fan of blackout uniforms just for the sake of having them, Baylor simply won’t promote something that engages the entire fan base. The athletic department really needs to step up their game on fan engagement. Here’s hoping Y/W/Y makes an appearance at some point.

BONUS UNIFORMS! Time to have a look at our future Big XII teams!

#22 University of Central Florida Knights at #17 Tulane University Green Wave (UCF Wins, 38-31)
UCF: Black/White/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/XEkUPyP )
Tulane: Blue/Green/Blue (Link: https://imgur.com/a/l80LSHc )
Tulane came into the game boasting the third fewest rushing touchdowns allowed in the nation at four. QB John Rhys Plumlee ran around, through or away from the stingiest run defense in the American Athletic Conference again and again. Plumlee accounted for 308 yards and three touchdowns, rushing for 176 yards and two TDs, highlighted by a 67-yard scoring run and UCF took over first place in the AAC. UCF (8-2, 5-1) surpassed 400 yards of offense for the eighth time this season. Much like the Big XII, this has been a fun conference to watch.
Tulane has not had a bad uniform this season. Let the picture speak for itself, absolutely beautiful uniform from the Green Wave.
UCF provided great contrast against the color forward Tulane uniform, going with a black and white uniform that omitted gold entirely. This was the perfect game to bring these out. I will say, I hope these are a one off, because the Knight’s shade of gold is one of my favorites in college football. One gripe that I hadn’t noticed until now: those are some awfully thin numbers.

University of Cincinnati Bearcats vs East Carolina University Pirates (Cincy Wins, 27-25)
CIN: Black/Black/Black (Link: https://imgur.com/a/9ijOZ96 )
ECU: Black/White/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/2fDujNV )
Cincinnati led 24-12 at halftime, helped by an awesome kickoff return TD, but a 13-point 3rd quarter gave East Carolina a 25-24 lead heading to the fourth. The Bearcats drove to the ECU 3-yard line on their first possession of the fourth quarter and Coe's 21-yard field goal gave them a 27-25 lead. That score held up as East Carolina failed to mount a scoring threat over the final minutes. Cincy is now first in their conference, and looks great at 8-2.
Fun fact: 4 of the final 5 matchups between ECU and UC will have been played on a Friday. In their last five weeknight games at Nippert Stadium, they also wore all black. Again, last week I was a little concerned with the number of blackout uniforms for teams that don’t have a black color scheme. This week has been much better, with all black uniforms being worn by Cincy and OK-State. These look fresh and were the first blackout duds worn by the Bearcats this season. Great work from the Cincy boys!
Pirates lost a close one, and they did it in a uniform that I’m honestly not a fan of. I think a white helmet would have really been awesome here, even though there is a supposed curse on the white helmets. But of course, they did just lose in a black helmet. The American Conference is still in hot contention!

University of Houston Cougars vs Temple University Owls (UH Wins, 43-36)
UH: Red/Red/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/XEEGJ6c )
Temple: White/White/White (Link: https://imgur.com/a/6wNmGbH )
Houston RB Stacy Sneed scored two rushing touchdowns and set a career high with 143 yards on the ground. It was most for a Cougar since Duke Catalon ran for 177 yards at SMU in 2017. Temple’s QB E.J Warner threw for a single-game program-record 486 yards on 42/59 passing for 3 TDs and had a great game, but Houston’s quick scoring drive late in the 4th quarter sealed it for the Cougars.
This is the second time we’ve talked about Temple, what really seals the deal are the diamonds. More subtle than a checkerboard, but just as unique. In Week 7 I stated I wasn't a fan of their tricolor look, and they luckily wore a suit I much rather fancy. The stormtrooper suit is accentuated by those crazy cool diamond patterns, and I can’t complain one bit.
Houston’s Red/Red/White combo was actually a new look this season, which very much surprised me. This is a simple, no-nonsense look without any garnish or flair. It is surprisingly one of my favorites! I would love to know what others think about it. I think a script Cougar’s logo would have paired nicely, or an homage the 1951 logo, but that’s not a huge gripe.

Let’s check out two more uniforms in your random uniforms of the week!

Western Kentucky University Hilltoppers vs Rice University Owls (WKU Wins 45-10)
WKU: Black/Red/Red (Link: https://imgur.com/a/RgALIqA )
Rice: Gray/White/Blue (Link: https://imgur.com/a/yIpOw3X )
The Owls had 326 total yards, 24 first downs and converted 7/11 third downs but threw four interceptions and lost two fumbles. It sure is hard to win a game when you give the ball away six times!
Everybody knows why I picked this uniform matchup. Big Red has now graced a helmet. What is Big Red? Big Red, Western Kentucky University's athletic mascot, was born in the fall of 1979, and is not animal, nor human, but simply Big Red. Big Red can be best described as the Spirit of Western! He is undoubtedly one of the favorite mascots in college football. Literally everyone loves this uniform! The red is a great color, there’s enough red on the black helmet to give that edge of menace, while still having the lovable Big Red on the side. I even kind of dig the off-color “Hilltoppers” script on the side of the pants. On absolute principle, these win uniform of the week.
I won’t speak much on Rice, but I did like their helmets as well. The gray is very Cowboy adjacent, and the Rice “R” monogram looks great with the thin Texas outline around it. The numbers on the other side are also a simple touch and help simplify the helmet.

Northern Arizona University Lumberjacks at University of Northern Colorado Bears (UNC Wins, 21-20)
NAU: Blue/White/Blue (Link: https://imgur.com/a/uuAvU4c )
UNC: Blue/ Blue/Blue (Link: https://imgur.com/a/gG3QzrQ )
Driving 96 yards for the go-ahead score and 2-pt conversion taking up more than seven minutes of game time, Northern Colorado captured a 21-20 win over Northern Arizona on Saturday afternoon at Nottingham Field. A few of my friends in the region actually went to this game and were VERY glad they did. This was a nail-bitter, and the Bears came out on top. The Bears had a strong outing against the Lumberjacks, recording 335 yards and 22 first downs. All three phases of UNC’s game were played beautifully.
It was a tad difficult getting clean images of the games, but from what I saw, UNC wore an all-blue look with gold accents, which have been the school colors since 1976. The original colors were actually purple and gold, and the name has gone through some changes as well. Until 1925, the official name of the athletic teams was the Teachers. In that year, UNC adopted the name Bears, due to the bear carving atop an Alaskan Tlingit Indian totem pole that came to the school in 1914. It served as a school symbol until 2003, when it was properly returned to the Tlingits under the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act. There is some awesome history to this university, and you should look it up if you're bored! Anyway, these uniforms are fairly mediocre to me. The font is bold and uninspired, the UNC logo on the helmet is just okay. The Bear head logo is so cool, it's almost a crime to not include it! There isn’t much substance to these, and they could probably use an overhaul.
The Lumberjacks were on the other end of the spectrum. They have a LOT going on in their suits. The blue pants are a different shade than the helmet, there are gold mountains (maybe?) on the side of the pants, the collar has a black and yellow braided cord design, and there’s a random blue spot on the shoulders. The logo itself, NAU enclosed in an axe head outline, is sweet. But maybe we can touch up those uniforms sometime.

Aaaaand that’s all folks! Week 11 is history! I hope you enjoy yourselves this week, can’t wait to see you next time! If you liked this post, have anything additional to add/suggest, leave an upvote, comment, or message me! See you next week in football’s greatest conference!

Introduction

Katu Veo, wastelanders! We continue to talk about the history of the Fallout world, settlements and factions. Today we will analyze the lore of the first iteration of Fallout 3, which was supposed to be released back in 2003, and is better known by its technical name Van Buren.
After the successful Fallout 1, released in 1997, and Fallout 2 released after in 1998, Interplay, the original developer, faced a number of failed projects in the series. First, at an early stage of development, Fallout Extreme was canceled in 2000, which was supposed to present the journey of some Brotherhood squad through Canada, Alaska, the Bering Strait and Chukotka to China. Then Fallout Tactics - tactical isometric shooter - was released in 2001, very much cutting down the role-play, simplifying the ecosystem of local settlements and claiming a too huge piece of territory for the game area, turning it into a desert of lore. In 2003, Fallout 3 (aka Van Buren) was canceled, despite the concept being developed in sufficient detail. Instead, in 2004, a mangled mutant affected by FEV saw the light – Fallout Brotherhood of Steel, which at that time turned out to be a grave game for the entire series. Cancelled Fallout Brotherhood of Steel 2, was just the agony of a dying man. With the failures of the series, the bankruptcy of Interplay also came. I do not know by what miracle Bethesda saw the potential in the corpse of the series, but it bought the rights for a penny and revived the series, bringing the world Fallout 3 and the legendary Fallout New Vegas, the basis of which is partly the reused lore of Van Buren. However, there is a part of lore of Van Buren that has never been used, but which, if being included significantly complements the picture of the world, albeit with very broad and not detailed strokes. That's what we will mainly talk about today.

Wastelands of 4 states - Geography

Van Buren’s game area was supposed to occupy the territories of 5 wastelands of 4 states – Utah, Colorado, New Mexico and Arizona. But given the existence of separate games and the colossal size of the area, there is a need to divide it into separate wastelands.
The geography of the wastelands of New Mexico, Midwestern and Sonora is described in articles devoted to the first parts of their history.
Colorado wasteland borders the Midwestern Wasteland by the Rocky Mountains, and the New Mexico wasteland by the San Juan Mountains. Due to the Colorado Plateau, the wasteland goes deep into Utah up to the Wasatch Range and Uinta Mountains.
Utah wasteland includes the deserts of the Great Salt Lake Desert, Sevier Desert and Escalante Desert and flows into the territory of Nevada up to Snake Range Mountains and Moapa Valley. On the south side, the wasteland is separated from the Sonora Wasteland by the Grand Canyon

Concept of Van Buren

The main events of Van Buren were supposed to take place in 2253, 11 years after the events of Fallout 2. The protagonist, being a criminal or an innocently convicted citizen of NCR, wakes up in Tibbets prison, where robots control the order. Suddenly, a certain group of villains attacks this prison, and as a result, holes are formed in the walls through which prisoners run. They begin to be chased by robot wardens, which are programmed to return them back to their cells. The protagonist escapes into the wasteland.
As the game progressed, the Prisoner had to find out that there was such a mad scientist in NCR, Victor Presper, who wanted to destroy cities with the help of an orbital military station for a reason known only to him. To gain access to the station, it had to be activated, and for this, he needed to release the virus of a New Plague, aka the Blue Flu. During the war with China, an epidemic of this flu raged in the United States, which was actually synthesized in a military laboratory at Hoover Dam and a sample of which Chinese spies extracted, and released in a public place in the city of Boulder, CO. The epidemic killed 200 thousand people in the first year. West Tek tried to invent a cure for the flu, but instead they invented the FEV, in which the American government was more interested, because it gave a potential advantage in the war against China. Also the control of the population by the threat of an incurable virus is a very useful tool. Even 200 years after the nuclear war, the space station system had to continue registering the spread of the epidemic and, if necessary, activate bombs that could be dropped on cities. Presper wanted to interfere into the process and put it into manual mode to destroy the settlements he wanted. In order to provoke the spread of the virus, Presper infected the prison, and then attacked it with his people, allowing the prisoners to spread the virus across the wastelands. A very weak plot, to be honest.
But this was not the first version of the plot. According to the original idea of Chris Avellone, the pre-war scientist Presper, who has access codes to all the computers of the ZAX, woke up from cryogenic sleep and, being infected with a New Plague virus, but not experiencing symptoms, visited settlements, leaving behind an epidemic trail. Perhaps the protagonist needed to stop his journey and somehow synthesize a cure. At least in this version of the plot, the antagonist does not look like a caricature of Doctor Evil.

Inapplicable lore of Van Buren

After the release of Fallout New Vegas, a huge portion of the original lore of Van Buren turned out to be unfriendly to the canon. For general information, we will run through it, but we will not use it in the general history:
It was assumed that by 2253, NCR had already overcome the Hoover Dam and advanced as far as Denver. Due to the economic collapse and inability to pay salaries, NCR was practically unable to maintain its "Far East" and many work crews became renegades and robbers. The Powder Gangers from Fallout New Vegas in particular were originally invented in this context. In Denver, NCR was supposed to have a camp of prisoners sentenced to salvage works and mining all sorts of trash on the ruins of the city.
The Brotherhood of Steel was to establish its new chapter in Arizona, but not related to what it was in 2167. The branch in Van Buren was fundamentally supposed to be founded by a descendant of Maxson and located in the Maxson Bunker. The main conflict related to the Brotherhood and NCR was supposed to be the war of these two factions over the Hoover Dam, which eventually transferred to Fallout New Vegas, with Brotherhood being replaced by the Legion. Also, the Brotherhood was to have a split and a new faction of the Circle of Steel was to be formed, consisting of paladins and knights who were hooked on the use of stealth boys, driving them deranged. In Fallout New Vegas, the Circle of Steel is an analog of the organization's internal security service and developed schizophrenia was given to nightkins of Jacobstown.
NCR also had to have the mining village of Burham Springs, which was supposed to blow up when NCR army accidentally ignited the powder stocks of Powder Gangers pursuing them in caverns beneath the village. Because of the reaction of some underground gases and radioactive uranium, the region was supposed to become a burning wasteland with snake-like anthropomorphic mutants. Perhaps the idea for the Divide was taken from this concept.
NCR also had to find Boulder Dome – a huge research center, which apparently became the prototype of Big MT. The mad scientist Presper had to send students from NCR University there, in whom he saw followers of his claims to incinerate the world, and, if he was receiving a refusal to join, he was freezing his students in the center. A group of scientists and students who arrived there in 2253 are not yet aware of Presper's plans, but they have already come into conflict with their escort group hooked on rad-x, whom they had lock outside the center in the wasteland, locking themselves inside. So that, there are hungry and angry soldiers-drug addicts outside, hungry and unarmed scientists inside, and to make things worse - hungry and savage Jackals came to the Boulder Dome during their wanderings in the wastelands.
NCR also had to have Fort Aradesh somewhere halfway to Denver.
Considering that now this part of Van Buren’s lore is in strict contention with the canon, we ignore completely NCR’s advance to the east and forget about Burham Springs, the prospectors in Denver, Boulder Dome, Fort Aradesh, Hoover Dam and Tibbets Prison, as well as the Brotherhood of Steel in Maxson's Bunker. Fort Aradesh will appear a little later as a part of content cut from Fallout New Vegas and mentioned in Fallout Frontier, Tibbets prison – as part of Fallout New California lore and will be located in the vicinity of New Reno. We will also ignore the city of Jericho, which at some point had to be introduced as an alternative to the cut-out New Canaan, when funding problems arose during the development of Van Buren. And of course we will not take into account the main storyline of Van Buren for obvious reasons.
In addition to the part of Van Buren’s lore, that does not contradict the canon, we will also partially touch on the lore of the mentioned Fallout New California and Fallout New Vegas. As part of this article, we will not consider in detail the settlements and factions of Midwestern, New Mexico and Sonora described in Fallout Tactics, Fallout 1.5 and Fallout Sonora respectively. There are special articles about them. In this article, we will look at the history of Colorado and Utah (but without Zion Canyon) since 2077, and New Mexico, Midwestern and Sonora since 2171.

The Great War

On October 23, 2077, a hail of nuclear warheads hit the world. Cities have been destroyed, millions have died, and society has fallen. Traditionally, we will begin to look at the history of the region starting with vaults and other shelters of the nuclear Holocaust period.

Vault-Tec Vaults

In Utah, in Salt Lake City there was Vault 70. Even before the war, Mormons bought out all the spots in the vault. Although it is possible that the experiment was partly associated with this.

History of the Colorado and Utah Regions: 2077-2198

2077

When the war happened, a group of US Army soldiers led by John Bloch was cut off from the outside world in the Grand Canyon. They had nowhere to go, but they had to survive. They did not know how to grow food, but they had their weapons with which they began raiding other new settlements.

After 2077

One day John Bloch raiders came across a Farmers Settlement, but they in turn offered to pay a tribute so that they would not be touched and even protected from other raiders. However, since there was nothing much to buy anywhere else, they exchanged the same tribute back for supplies. In the end, the two groups merged into one. The young members of the farming community wanted to explore the wastelands, and the old raiders wanted to retire and smoke a pipe in a rocking chair on the porch, looking after the brahmins. One day they met a tribe of Indians who had left the reservations established by the US government. We can assume that this tribe was Blackfoot. Once again, two groups of people united and mixed. The Indians gained access to higher technologies, and the settlers gained knowledge about the wastelands and more primitive technologies for survival in a post–nuclear world. We will assume that from this moment the faction became known as Blackfoot.
In Colorado, Dead Horses tribe appears in the Dead Horse National Park, consisting of a mixture of tourists of different nationalities. They had a settlement called Dead Horses Point
In Utah, a tribe of White Legs appears in the town of Spanish Fork. They painted themselves white to blend in with the sands of the Salt Lake.
In the vicinity of the Grand Canyon there are tribes of Kaibabs, Ridgers and Fredonians who are apparently from the pre-war city of Fredonia.
At an unspecified point of time, the village of the Blackfoot tribe burned down, and they were forced to relocate and return to looting and raids, as they lost livestock and crops.

2078

(Fallout New California) April. In Vault 70, the jumpsuits production machine broke down.

After 2098

20 years after the fire in the village, a terrible disease struck the Blackfoot tribe, which began to kill off the younger generation. Then the tribe had to kidnap children from other tribes in addition to cattle in order to restore its population. Carried away by this, they also began to kidnap other people and generally switched to the slave trade. By this time, they had long since lost all weapons, understanding of technology, and finally slipped down to the state of a primitive tribe.

2140

(Fallout of Nevada) Before 2140, the town of Wendover is formed on the border of the Utah and Nevada wastelands beyond the Salt Lake Desert, which basically became a seasonal hunting camp.

History of the regions of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Sonora: 2185-2198

After 2171

(Fallout 1.5) Julian's gang, formed after the Rat Hole war in New Mexico, is dying out over time.

Before 2185

(Fallout Sonora, Fallout New California, Fallout New Vegas) According to one of the endings of Sonora, robots eliminated the Tinsmiths of Tucson. That correlates with the fact that Tucson was repopulated by mixed settlers in the future. Raul Tejada, the Mexican ghoul, lived in the city for as many as 75 years before the arrival of the Legion, so that the city was repopulated before 2185.

2190

Vault 70 opens, and the Mormons establish the city of New Jerusalem on the ruins of Salt Lake City. The inhabitants of New Jerusalem decided that they would not have any trade and communication with tribes, raiders and other inhabitants of the wastelands, so that they completely self-isolated.

2196

(Fallout New California) Aradesh, the president of NCR and Seth, the creator of NCR Rangers, make an unsuccessful expedition to Sonora. The expedition falls victim to an attack by a raider tribe of Black Vultures. After the massacre, a mortally wounded guard, Atl Iripani, survives by staying near a golden statue of Madre, which the expedition was taking somewhere for some reason. He is later found by Vultures and, amazed that he survived; they believed that Atl is an immortal demigod who appeared with a statue that personifies the deity. Atl was made a prophet, and he had to get used to the role, inventing religion on the go and developing it in the Vulture community. Since Hinduism was professed in Shady Sands, Atl looked for inspiration in the corresponding religious motives. Thus, Vultures have acquired a cultural mishmash, which can be characterized by 4 concepts: biker style, Hinduism, Islam and Indian culture.

History of the regions of Colorado, Utah, New Mexico, Sonora, Midwestern: 2198-2253

2233

Tribes, raiders and other inhabitants of the wasteland, embittered by New Jerusalem isolation, besieged the city and managed to take it by storm for the purpose of plundering. They slaughtered everyone who did not have time to escape. Fortunately, most of the residents, led by the prophet Judah Black, still managed to evacuate north to the ruins of Ogden, where they founded a new city – New Canaan, which over the years will become the largest and most important settlement of the entire Utah wasteland. In the future, it will be able to establish an alliance with NCR and establish regular trade.

Before 2242

(Fallout New California) Before 2242, Vault 47 in Sahuarita is opened, and people are able to freely leave it. Kevin Rossman leaves the vault and relocates himself to Vault 18 in Cajon Pass. We will talk in detail about the persona of Kevin Rossman and Vault 18 in the episode dedicated to the Cajon Pass region.
(Fallout New Vegas) On the coast of the Colorado River near Bullhead City in Sonora wasteland, a tribe of Twisted Hairs appears in the settlement of Dry Wells. A distinctive feature of the tribe was their dreadlocks, which they braided and decorated in accordance with their personal history, filling them with symbolism.

2245

20 April. Vault 20 in Tucson is dying out. Perhaps due to the end of the experiment with a certain toxic substance.

2246

In 2246, Edward Sallow and Bill Calhoun, two missionaries of Followers of the Apocalypse, went to study the dialects of the tribes living in the Grand Canyon. During their journey, they met a Mormon Joshua Graham from New Canaan, who knew several local tribal languages. However, mistakes in translation and answers during communication with Blackfeet led to the fact that the trio was captured. The Blackfeet fought a war at the same time with seven other tribes – that is how they were hated by everyone else in the region. Nevertheless, it was in the interests of the prisoners that the Blackfeet would have emerged victorious, since otherwise they themselves could meet the same miserable fate. Edward, who recently read the history of Ancient Rome in a book and was inspired by their culture, military affairs and politics, taught the Blackfeet the art of war, at least those skills and tactics thanks to which they were able to defeat the rest of the tribes.
The first to fall was the Ridgers tribe, which refused to surrender, for which the Blackfeet under Edward's command killed everyone without exception. The next in line were Kaibabs, who were shown by the example of Ridgers what would happen to them if they did not give up and assimilate. The Kaibabs were forced to join the Blackfeet. Then the Fredonian tribe fell, and after that the remaining 4 tribes, whose names were erased from the history.

2247

Thus, by 2247, a conglomerate of tribes appeared in the Grand Canyon. Edward Sallow managed to recreate the "Roman Empire" he dreamed of. He called himself Caesar, and his faction became Caesar's Legion. Over the next 30 years, the Legion will be engaged in a systematic seizure of territories, enslavement, and absorption of settlements and tribes, forcing them to renounce their culture and change into orange armor.

2251

Although NCR prospectors in Denver are not taken into account, we can still take into account the so-called Evil Scavengers, former raiders who dug in Denver unrelatedly to NCR. In the city, they have their own Scavengers Camp.

2252

In the summer, a gang of Rusty Hooks digs in at the Bloomfield Space Center

Before 2253

There is a tribe of Iron Lines in Colorado. The basis of their culture is the deification of the pre-war railway. For a long time they were nomads, traveling along the railways, believing that they would lead them to some kind of paradise. Traveling along the tracks, they eventually come to the city of Grand Junction, in the railway depot of which there was a so-called railway-turning circle, which, according to the tribe, was the most sacred place. They named their new settlement Circle Junction.
By 2253, the ghoul settlement of Reservation in New Mexico had already thrown off the shackles of isolation and organized a small trade outside Los Alamos. The entrance to the Reservation was still closed, although none of the people was particularly eager to go down in its depths to be irradiated. Somewhere in that area roamed the tribe of Scaven Pickers, who in fact were savage junkies of rad-x, and who, apparently as a result of the affected speech functions, created their own mumbling language.
The Children of the Wastelands, who have global imperialistic goals, are of particular interest to us, of course. However, due to the lack of any more intelligible lore associated with them, we can assume that they abandoned the policy of taking over the world and simply remained a ghoul city living off trade and protected by radiation from external threats.
In the vicinity of Denver or the so-called Dog Town, which turned out to be overrun by dogs, there are tribes of Hangdogs and Dog Lords. At the center of their cultures was the veneration of dogs and their use as the main resource for everything: they breed them, eat them, use skins, and train them. Simply put, the tribes of dog breeders.
In Sonora, the tribes of Hidebarks and Twin Rivers appear, and in New Mexico - Painted Rocks.
(Fallout New Vegas) In the vicinity of the Salt Lake, several tribes appear, including Tar Walkers, Crazy Horns, Sun Dogs and 80s, who were raiding in the area of the highway of the same name.
(Fallout Frontier) In addition to the tribes already presented in the story, countless nameless tribes appear whose role in global history was mainly to become an animal feed for Caesar's Legion. Among those, for example, there is a couple of unnamed tribes, which will be conquered by the Legion before 2259 and whose members by 2281 will found themselves in the Frontier wasteland. We are talking about the tribe of Adam Harrison (Harrison's Tribe) and the tribe of Tiberius Rancor (Tiberius Rancor's Tribe).
After the destruction of one other such unnamed tribe in Colorado before 2253, the escaped member of this tribe creates her own tribe - the Daughters of Hecate. This tribe has its own religion, in the center of which is the creator of the tribe, as a kind of demigod. She went to other tribes, spreading her influence and charming everyone with her shamanic tricks. They were afraid of her and believed that she had the power to cause diseases and give life. In the end, vassal tribes began to form around her, in which representatives of "daughters" gave birth to new members of the tribes in closed tents. Healthy babies were taken to the settlement of Hecate – Ouroboros - and they were replaced by weak ones, which were left to the tribes. According to the idea, in couple of generations, the tribes were supposed to become much weaker, and the Daughters, on the contrary, become much stronger. Hecate wanted, like Caesar, to clear the region of other tribes, conditionally taking their strength in the face of the future healthy generation. They have a tribe living in Ouroboros with them and consisting only of men – Hounds of Hecate. In the original Van Buren concept, Hecate was a member of Twisted Hair tribe, but since they were reintroduced in Fallout New Vegas and were destroyed closer to 2277, we will assume that Hecate was a representative of another unnamed tribe. Conceptually, Hecate’s plan does not stand up to criticism. Even if we imagine that according to Van Buren’s lore, the original tribe of Twisted Hairs died back in 2247, then, anyway, in 6 years, it was hardly possible to achieve any serious success with such a plan she had. So in 2253, Ouroboros, the Daughters of Hecate and their Hounds will most likely be exactly the same snack for the Legion as all the other tribes in the region rather than a threat.

2253

Since we have eliminated the presence of NCR on the territory of 4 states, we ignore the main Van Buren conflict, the escape from Tibbets prison, the war of NCR and the Brotherhood of Steel over the Hoover Dam and the Prisoner's flight to the space station.
However, it is possible to accept the story associated with the Twin Mothers tribe. On the Forbidden Lands, a piece of land in front of Vault 31, the Scorpion's Bite gang settled, which periodically attacked the tribe. Considering that the Twin Mothers lived long enough to be destroyed in a couple of decades by Caesar, and not taking into account the influence of the protagonist of Van Buren, we can assume that the Twin Mothers took up arms and rebuffed the gang, destroying it.
It can also be assumed that the camp of Evil Prospectors in Denver was destroyed by a pack of dogs.

2255

By 2255, the Legion had made a major breakthrough into Sonora and seized Flagstaff, making it its capital. Perhaps someone lived there after the colonists of Phoenix and before the arrival of Caesar, but so far, it is unknown. Since Caesar has already seized Flagstaff, it means that he has at least dealt with the Rusty Hooks in Bloomfield, which was on the way of their expansion. Perhaps the seizure of Flagstaff is associated with Caesar's Legion turn from a nomadic gang of Roman infantrymen into a real state with all its inherent administrative institutions.

Conclusion

The seizure 2 of Flagstaff in 2255 and the establishment of a new state capital in it is an excellent delimiter of two historical eras. In the next article, we will analyze in detail the lore of Fallout New California, the setting of which was the Cajon Pass subregion, which became a hot zone in 2260, when the remnants of Enclave, the remnants of Unity, NCR, the Alliance of Raiders and the Scouts of Vault 18 clashed in the confrontation.
Try not to mess with up with tribal language translations and find yourself being cooked in a pot, lone wanderers. And so we will meet once again in the wastelands. Fisher’s out!

2022.08.31 04:04 TaraCalicosBike In October 2003, the body of a woman was discovered by hunters near Williams, Arizona. She had died from blunt force trauma to the head, and given the nickname “Devil Dog Jane Doe” based on the road she was found. Her identify has never been uncovered. Who was Devil Dog Jane Doe?

On October 24, 2003, deer hunters were searching for prey in the forest outside of Williams, Arizona, when they stumbled on the body of a woman. The body was located on Devil Dog Road, one mile south of interstate 40, and six miles to the west of William’s town limits. The woman was lying face down, naked, and had been killed with a single blow to the head, which cracked her skull. It is believed that the woman had been killed elsewhere, and she had been left at this location sometime within the prior ten days. It also appeared that the woman had been dragged roughly 60-70 feet, to where she laid underneath a canopy of trees.
The woman was estimated to be between the ages of 55-65, standing at approximately 5’4” and weighing 150 pounds. She had short grey hair, with blonde scattered throughout, and she had brown or hazel eyes. She had no piercing or tattoos, but had an estimated $20,000 worth of dental work done to her teeth. Her nails were described as being beautifully manicured. Results of isotope testing indicated the victim could have spent her formative years in Central Europe possibly Vienna, Austria and spent the last decade of her life in Western France, possibly near Paris.
An X-ray revealed that the woman was a heavy smoker at one point, based on the arteries in her legs. Jane Doe also had diabetes, as well as senile ecchymosis (a condition that looks like bruising) along the backside of her right arm. It was concluded that she also had pneumonia at one point, and they uncovered evidence of heart disease.
Investigators believe that the victim and her killer were not familiar with the area. Though the land was heavily forested, the place that she was left was often frequented by hunters. They also theorized that she was killed by someone she knew and was comfortable with, as she had no defensive wounds on her body. They determined that if they could find out her identity and who her family was, they wouldn’t be far off from determining who her killer was.
Authorities worked diligently, for years, to determine who Devil Dog Jane Doe could be. They extracted DNA and submitted it to the appropriate databases- both within America and internationally, a composite sketch was made up of her face, and her dental information was passed to dentists within Arizona and around surrounding areas. Unfortunately, no fingerprints could be taken, due to the state of decomposition. A costly magazine article was put out of her dental work to see if any dentists would recognize their own work, and isotope testing was performed on her bones.
Authorities poured over missing person’s files to see if they could make a match, and checked with Immigration in Washington D.C, to see if any women matching DDJD’s description might have overstayed their visas. They also would comb through death certificates that were issued sans a body, which is rare, but happens when a family wants to declare a family member dead, despite not having a body to conclude the death.
Here are a few possible (but unlikely) missing women who could potentially fit the description of Jane Doe (please keep in mind that these women were linked to possibly being Jane Doe through amateur sleuthing, rather than the proper authorities, but I feel like the potential matches should be noted):
June Goodman- June Goodman was the subject of my write up last night, so you may already be familiar with her story. But if not, June vanished from her home in Snowflake, Arizona, in March of 2003, after having dinner with her sister and heading back to her own home. Not a single footprint would be recovered to determine where June might have gone to after she left her home, and her body has never been discovered. Due to the timing, location, and physical similarities between the women, it seems like it could be a potential match. However, June did not spend any time living in Europe, and grew up in her hometown of Snowflake, Arizona.
Marie Agne Bisch Petithory- the information I can read on Marie is slim, as I don’t speak French, and all of her information is in French, but this is what I could gather: Marie left her home in November 6, 2002, and was last seen walking the streets of Saint Louis around 8:30am that same day. She had never been seen again since. While it seems improbable that Marie would wind up in Arizona, the physical similarities between Marie and DDJD are striking, and with DDJD having isotope testing that proved she spent time in France, I thought the comparison should be made and more heavily looked into. (If any French speakers would like to dive into this more, please let us know any additional information you may find, in the comments)
Annelise Schweickardt- Annelise was a German woman who was living in Sarasota, Florida, before she disappeared on April 9, 2003. She was staying in Florida on a tourist visa. It is believed that Annelise’s tenant had murdered her, and blood was found in her apartment when a welfare check was performed. She has never been found. While it seems unlikely that Annelise was killed in Florida and disposed of across the country in Arizona, the physical similarities are once again striking. However, the timing of her possible death compared to when the body was discovered in Arizona doesn’t seem to match up.

Personal Theory
I never like to add my own personal thoughts into my write ups, but with this case, and how very little there is to go on, I didn’t think it would hurt to add.
I believe that Devil Dog Jane Doe was visiting Arizona on vacation from Europe, and was in the process of traveling with a companion to see the Grand Canyon. The area which she was discovered is considered to be a popular gateway to the national park. I believe pair were driving a rented car, and something occurred that had caused Jane Doe’s death, where her companion hit her over the head out of the blue. I believe the companion, possibly her husband, pulled the car over at the nearest exit, and disposed of her body. I wonder if authorities could ever trace a couple who had entered the United States, and only the husband returned back to Europe. Or, as they’ve already attempted, finding a woman who fit the description of Jane Doe, who had overstayed their visa.
Closing
Without a doubt, someone is missing this woman, and longs to know where she is. Whether that be in Arizona or overseas, it is unclear, but someone out there has to be wondering about their missing loved one who had visited the state of Arizona in 2003, and never returned. I truly hope that one day Jane Doe gets her name back, and she is put to rest in her hometown, near her friends and family. As of right now, Jane Doe is resting at Citizen’s Cemetery in Flagstaff, Arizona. She was placed in the potter’s field, alongside other unidentified deceased persons, and she doesn’t even have a grave marker to mark where she was laid to rest. If anything, Citizen’s Cemetery is an absolutely beautiful place to be buried- full of lush green trees in the summertime, and a blanket of powdery snow in the winter. But, it’s not where Jane Doe belongs… she belongs near those who loved and cared for her, those who are longing for her return. I visit the cemetery every time that I visit Flagstaff, and next time I’m there, I’ll lie a flower in the potter’s field in remembrance of her, from all of us here in this subreddit who took the time to learn of her story. Thank you for reading!
I want to give a very special thank you to u/Nearby-Complaint for bringing this case to my attention, as I had never heard of it before they told me about it. I appreciate them, and everyone who has sent me unsolved Arizona cases to cover here.

2022.08.30 01:07 TaraCalicosBike June Goodman had dinner with her sister, grabbed some chocolate bars, and headed home for the evening on March 28, 2003. She was never seen again. Without even a footprint to hint where she may have gone, investigators say it’s like she “vanished into thin air.” What happened to June Goodman?

June Goodman was a 66 year old woman living in Snowflake, Arizona, before she suddenly disappeared one spring evening, in 2003. She had been born and raised in the quaint town, located southwest of the Petrified National Forest, and she raised her children there, as well. June was incredibly excited about the next phase of her life, as she was just about to retire from her long standing job at the US Postal Service, and had begun to make plans on what came next for her life.
June’s daughter, Donette, had described her mother as someone who was always cheerful and saw the positive in everyone and everything, and people were drawn in by her warm and endearing personality. She was well respected in her community, and was well known by the residents of Snowflake. June was not only the mother to four children, but she was also the grandmother to 19 grandchildren, and great-grandmother to 25 great-grandchildren, some of which were born after her disappearance. Donette had spoken of her mother to local media, saying:
”The most important things to mom were her faith, her family and her friends. She was a solid citizen and a warm person who everyone liked.”
The Disappearance
On the evening of March 28, 2003 June Goodman met up with her sister, Pat Fawcett, to have dinner. During this dinner, June excitedly told Pat about how she was looking forward to her upcoming retirement, and the plans she began to make for her free time. The pair spent time in each other’s company until about 8:00pm, when June decided it was time to leave, and head home. However, June had fancied something sweet to end off the evening, and made a stop into Ed’s Market for some candy. She browsed the aisles for a bit, before settling on four chocolate bars and bringing them to the register. Once purchased, June left the store, around 8:25pm.
It’s unclear where June might have gone next, but it is suspected that after leaving Ed’s market, she made her way directly back to her home. Her ranch style home was located at the end of a quarter mile dirt road, and she had lived there for years. June had become a widow several years earlier, and now lived at the residence by herself after the death of her husband. Despite living alone, June always felt very safe within her community, and didn’t feel as if she had anything to fear, for the most part.
Once June got into her house, she settled in to watch some tv and eat her chocolate bars, before heading to sleep. She was scheduled to work the next morning, but when her shift rolled around, she never showed up. This deeply concerned June’s coworkers, as she was a very reliable employee, who often arrived early to work to prepare for her deliveries. June’s coworkers called her home to check on her, but when they failed to reach her, they phoned June’s sister, Pat. Once Pat learned about her sister’s unusual absence, she immediately got in her car and drove to June’s home.
Once Pat arrived at the house, she was quite alarmed right off the bat. The sliding glass door which lead to the backyard had been left half open, and June’s work van was still parked in it’s normal spot. The outside lights also had been left on overnight, which Pat found unusual as he sister would typically turn them off before turning in for bed. Once she entered the home, she found the television had been left on, but there was no sign of anyone home. This was enough for Pat to contact the Snowflake Police Department, who immediately arrived on scene.
Both the Snowflake Police Department and Navajo County Sheriff’s office became involved from the start- June wasn’t just a beloved member of the community, she was also related to US Representative Jeff Flake and state House Speaker Jake Flake, two prominent members of the GOP in Arizona. Police were feeling the pressure to solve this case in a timely manner, though they quickly concluded that her relations to these politicians was in no way related to her disappearance. Robbery was also ruled out as a motive, as nothing had appeared to be missing from the home. All of her jewelry, her purse and wallet, and other valuable items were all accounted for. All of June’s shoes had also appeared to have been accounted for as well, meaning that she had left her home barefoot, or at the very least wearing socks.
Police looked at the scene closely to piece together what may have happened that evening. They noted that it appeared June has been sitting in her recliner, and was watching tv directly before she vanished. They also noted that where this recliner was positioned lent a great view of the long dirt road leading up to her home. They theorized that perhaps June had seen headlights approaching, and had opened the back sliding glass door in order to greet someone. They suspected that since the back door was left half open until morning, that June never went back into her house, once she stepped out.
There were no signs of struggle either inside the home or outside of it. This lead authorities to believe that June may have gotten into a vehicle willingly, either to have a conversation or to go to another location. They also noticed that there were no footprints in the dirt outside her home, making it impossible to determine which direction June may have walked after she left the back door. A search was quickly put on for the missing woman, which included dogs, searchers on foot, and helicopters. The search spanned miles in either direction, yet no sign of June was uncovered. A spokesperson for the Sheriff’s office made a statement saying that it almost appeared as if June stepped foot outside her back door, and vanished into thin air. They were at a loss.
The Investigation
Within days of June’s disappearance, authorities announced that they believe this was a case of abduction. However, they did not state what led them to believe this. Within the first month of the investigation, over 300 people had been interviewed by police, some of these interviews being with coworkers of June. This is when they learned of an angry postal customer by the name of Patrick Michael Conn, who had made threats against June the year prior.
Forty three year old Patrick had been a regular customer of June’s for years, on her rural postal route, and he lived to the east of Snowflake. At the time, the US Postal Service had begun to refuse delivery of mail to customers if they did not use the designated address assigned to their home, and this angered a lot of customers, Patrick included. Patrick continuously refused to use his designated home address for his mail, and June continuously refused to deliver his mail. This led to an angry, heated confrontation between the two, which scared June enough to speak to her supervisor and put in a formal, written complaint about Patrick, so his name would remain on file.
When Patrick realized that his outburst wasn’t enough to fix the situation, he decided to go a step further. He drove to the post office and let a handful of June’s coworkers know that he was going to kill her. Naturally this frightened June immensely, telling her sister that she was deathly afraid of the man, and for very good reason: Patrick had recently been the prime suspect in another murder.
Shortly after Patrick threatened June, in February of 2002, Patrick had become the prime suspect in the murder of Donald Sewell. Donald had been shot with a Russian made semi-automatic rifle, and left to die, slumped over his vehicle, off of Highway 77. He had been shot 13 times. The murder of Donald was the first homicide the town of Snowflake had seen in decades. Patrick came under the radar as a suspect when it was discovered he was trying to sell a similar gun shortly after the homicide. Patrick had fled Arizona after the shooting, but authorities assumed that he had returned to his hometown in Ohio. However, they did not discount the possibility that Patrick actually remained in the state, never having left, and was possibly responsible for the abduction and murder of June, as well.
Then in September of 2003, they located Patrick hiding out in Columbus, Ohio. They extradited him back to Arizona, to face earlier charges of child molestation. He never faced charges in the death of Donald Sewell, and it is unclear if that murder has ever had a resolution. They also determined that Patrick was in Columbus at the time of June’s disappearance- with this, and no evidence linking him, he was never charged for the abduction of June, but police did keep him listed as a person of interest in the case. Patrick was charged in the child molestation case, and sentenced to serve 21 years in prison.
Another potential suspect came on the radar of investigators, an unnamed tv repairman who had worked on June’s television about a month prior to her disappearance. Her sister stated that after the repairs, June continued to have issues with her tv, and expressed that she had been unhappy with the repairs. Pat had suggested that June call the repairman back in order to complete the job, but June refused, telling her sister that the man gave her an uneasy feeling and she did not want to be around him again. They had interviewed this man while he was in jail for unrelated drug charges, but they were unable to uncover anything that would lead them to believe he had been involved in June’s disappearance.
The family didn’t want June’s name and story to fade from the memory of town residents, and they put up a $100,000 reward for any information that would lead to a resolution in her case. They also placed a handful of billboards around the town to continue to keep her memory alive and her disappearance as a priority. Despite this, the case went cold, and by 2003, it had faded from headlines completely. The family held a memorial service for June in 2008, coming to terms that she was most likely no longer alive, but wanting to celebrate her life. This brought little closure to the family, however, as they still don’t have answers as to what happened to their loved one.
Closing
June Goodman’s case is still open, but detectives have admitted that it is no longer an active investigation. They stated that the lack of witnesses to what happened that night severely hindered the investigation, and they have no idea of June left voluntarily, or if she had been abducted and killed, but they lean towards the latter.
When last seen, June was described as standing at 5’2” and weighing 130 pounds. She had brown/grey hair, and green eyes. She was last seen wearing a light purple sweatsuit, but she may have changed her clothes once she got home. She was believed to have been barefoot or wearing socks when she disappeared. If alive today, June would be 86 years old.

2022.08.15 06:03 hunterschuler 50 State Belt Buckles - Arizona (10/50)

New Jersey - 1/50, New York - 2/50, Connecticut - 3/50, Illinois - 4/50, Maryland - 5/50, Pennsylvania - 6/50 Michigan - 7/50 Alabama - 8/50 Arkansas - 9/50
The State Championship Buckles are a style of championship similar to the CFB Belt. The CFB Belt concept led to the idea of a Lone Star Belt Buckle where the winner of the first college football game in Texas became the champion and holder of the Buckle for Texas. The champion could only lose it to another Texas university. A few other people have researched their respective state's Buckles so I thought, "Why not do all 50?"
I've linked the first 9 states I completed. (Still haven't update the older states' lists to present day. I'll do it eventually...)
I have now arranged the source data in a way that should capture all of the times a school has defended their state buckle (in addition to the games where they lost it). It makes the tables a bit bigger so I'll try it out this time and see what y'all think
This Buckle begins with what appears to have been the first collegiate* football game in the State Territory of Arizona.

Notes:
The next Arizona Belt Buckle game will be the Sun Devil's season opener against Northern Arizona.
Next up in the series will probably be California.
Please let me know if you spot any errors! Also, if you have any feedback on whether or not to include the games where the Buckle was successfully defended, I'd be interested to hear it. I'm concerned that it might make the tables too large but if y'all are interested in those games, I can keep including them.

2022.08.04 15:58 thewaybaseballgo In search of: A Ron Watkins campaign shirt or hat. See post for details.

I believe this is the right sub to post this in, since Flagstaff is within AZ-1.
Now that the primary is over, and Ron is going to slink back into whatever weird porn dungeon he lives in, I need help with a project of mine.
One of my collections I’ve had since university in 2002 is obscure political and campaign merchandise. Recently, that has included a sizable amount of Melania Trump’s “Be Best” merchandise, which were as weird as you can imagine. Included in this are a mousepad and a backpack. I also have a lot of campaign merch from the insanity that was the 2003 California Recall Election, from multiple fringe candidates.
Since I first saw Ron giving out hats and shirts at his campaign events, I knew that I had to seek them out. However, not wanting to financial support to Ron or his campaign, I didn’t want to buy them from his store.
My hope is that someone in the area can help me out. If you have a line on a shirt or hat for Ron’s campaign, I will pay for shipping, and donate $50 to the charity of your choice. That charity can also be you, if you just want the cash.
Thank you in advance, and remember Where We Go One, We Go in 7th Place Out of 7 Candidates.

2022.07.09 07:26 TaraCalicosBike The Bumble Bee Road Murders: a couple found dead, mysterious camera photos, and a still open investigation.

The Bumble Bee Road Murders
This week, the podcast Going West covered the case of Brandon Rumbaugh and Lisa Gurrieri, also know as the Bumble Bee Road Murders. Personally, I was happy to see this podcast episode released, as I remember when the murders happened, back in 2003. Every time I drive past the remote Bumble Road Exit, heading back to the valley from Flagstaff, I think about this case, and what happened there on that dark October night.
Bumble Bee Road is an exit off of the I-17 highway, which travels north to south, extending from the Phoenix valley to Flagstaff. You’ll be heading westward, once you get off the exit ramp. It’s a remote part of the desert, known to be an escape from the city where you can hike, dirt bike, and camp. It was also a known party spot, a place for people to gather and drink, and stay out of sight. It’s a barren place, once a stagecoach town, and now simply more or less, a ghost town.
The Crime
On the evening of October 17, 2003, Lisa, 19, and Brandon, 20, were heading to Bumble Bee Road, to celebrate their one year anniversary of dating with an overnight camping trip. The two had been happily together for a year, and they had wanted to celebrate by going to Disneyland, but their plans changed. They decided to instead go on an overnight camping trip, for one evening only, an hour away from their home in Scottsdale. Brandon, a personal trainer, had needed to meet a client at 9am the following morning, so the pair decided to make this a quick trip, and be back in their hometown by early morning on the 18th. Lisa, whose father had died the same year, had told almost everyone in her life of her plans that evening. Everyone except her uncle, who had become even closer with her since the death of her father- he knew of a Bumble Bee Road, and he knew it could be a dangerous place, as he used to party there, himself.
The pair set out in the afternoon, and Lisa’s mother Paula called Lisa not long after they left, to see if they’d made it there safely. Lisa told her mother that they were not there yet, and they had “many miles to go.” This was the last time Paula spoke to her daughter. The next morning, the families of the couple both had expected them back, and once a few hours past, they began to panic. The families began calling around, and decided that some family members, along with 3 of Brandon’s friends, would make the hour long trip to Bumble Bee to search for them.
At 3:30 in the afternoon on the 18th of October, the three of Brandon’s friends came upon Lisa’s mother’s white Ford F-150, which Lisa borrowed for the trip. Upon walking up to the truck, the trio found both Brandon and Lisa, still in their sleeping bags, in the bed of the truck. It didn’t take long for the friends to realize something was seriously wrong- both Brandon and Lisa were shot multiple times, and lie dead in the back of the vehicle.
Upon examination of the bodies, investigators discovered that the couple were shot with a .25 caliber handgun, which was an uncommon weapon for a crime such as this. While first initially assumed a murder-suicide, the police ruled this out when it was discovered the gun was no longer at the scene, and had been taken away by the perpetrator.
The Photos
One hundred feet away from the truck was a disposable camera that was broken in half. Police felt that the camera was broken and tossed in order to render it useless. Despite this attempt, investigators were able to develop several of the photos in the camera, and while almost all of them were not of interest, the last three photos on the camera roll were intriguing.
In one photo, Lisa is sat in the bed of the truck, on the night of the camping trip. Her legs are bent and open in front of her, she is wearing jeans, a belt, and a black camisole. She is smiling, and her eyes are not looking at the lense, but slightly to the side and above the camera. Behind her is pitch black darkness. While looking at the photo, Paula says she knows that something is not right. As a mother, she feels she can tell that her daughter is in distress- and while it may look like a happy photo to the rest of us, she feels certain she knows something is off.
The second photo is of Brandon, and he is sitting in the same spot as Lisa was in her photo. His legs are also bent, and open, in a similar fashion. Instead of smiling, Brandon has his arms crossed at the chest, and his face doesn’t hold much expression. He has a straight face, and is looking at the camera.
The third photo is the most interesting. It appears to be taken behind a doorframe, of some sort, and in the center of the photo you can see what appears to be a hanging light fixture, and possibly a plant underneath. When the family of the victims were questioned, and they all stated that they do not know the location that the photo was taken. It’s unclear whether this photo was taken before or after the photos of Brandon and Lisa in the truck, and if it was taken afterwards, how that happened. If the photo was taken after their deaths, that means the killer took the camera with them, took a photo whether on accident or on purpose, and then returned to the scene of the crime, broke it, and left it there.
Theories
One of the early theories was that one of Brandon’s friends committed the murders, specifically one of the friend who found the bodies. This friend had strong romantic feelings for Lisa, and the family and investigators determined this could be a motive. Shortly after the murders, the friend packed up his home, and left the state. His home was completely empty when investigators found it. Later this same man was given a polygraph test, and passed, and was cleared as a suspect. The detective on this case stated that he should not have been ruled out as a suspect based on the polygraph alone, and would like to reinterview this man.
The second theory is that someone happened upon the truck, and decided they wanted to steal it. When they realized two people were sleeping in the back of the truck, they shot and killed them. A similar crime happened in Yuma, Arizona six months later, where two men were shot and killed and their truck was stolen. In this case, the killer committed suicide, and was not able to be questioned on the deaths of Lisa and Brandon.
The families are offering a $10,000 reward on any information that might bring justice for Lisa and Brandon. The case is still open and unsolved, nearly 20 years later. If Lisa were still alive, she would be 38, and Brandon 39.

2021.05.31 20:15 passwordisguest Get to Know the FCS, 2021: Big Sky

Big Sky
Established: 1963
Headquarters: Farmington, Utah
Commissioner: Tom Wistrcill
Website
History
The Big Sky was founded in 1963, conceived as a basketball conference to represent schools in the western states of Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Washington. The name originated in a novel written by A.B. Guthrie of Great Falls, MT, entitled “The Big Sky”.
Of the original six charter members (Gonzaga, Idaho, Idaho State, Montana, Montana State, and Weber State), four have been continuous members who have sponsored football in the conference. Gonzaga had stopped fielding a football program in 1941, and thus was never a football member. And Idaho, well Idaho has a streak of wanted to do their own thing. Despite co-founding the conference, they didn’t participate in league play football until 1965, after the other conferences members demanded it of them. More on that in a second.
From its inception in 1963 until the division system was introduced in 1973, the Big Sky competed at the College Division of football, when the divisions were split as University (Div. I) and College (Div. II and III) levels. The lone exception to this, as I alluded to, was Idaho. The Vandals, despite competing in the conference otherwise, played within the University Division (and later Division I before the subdivision split) from 1969-1977.
In 1973, when the numeric Division system was introduced, Big Sky football played within Division II (minus Idaho). When Division I was further split to Division IA and Division IAA in 1978, the Big Sky made the jump to DI into the D-IAA subdivision. The conference has remained there sense, and upon the naming convention change in 2006, the Big Sky remains an FCS conference with an autobid playoff spot for the conference champion.
The Big Sky has a reputation of being fairly stable in it’s membership over the last (nearly) 60 years of existence. This stems in large part to its geographic positioning, serving as a good landing spot for western FCS schools. But interestingly, it’s not as clear cut as one would assume at first glance.
The Big Sky (as a football conference) saw its first expansion in 1970 when Northern Arizona and Boise State joined. It further expanded to eight teams when Nevada joined in 1979, and expanded further to nine in 1987 with the addition of Eastern Washington.
Nevada’s tenure would be short live, as the Wold Pack (on the winds of making it to the championship in Statesboro, GA two years prior) would jump up to IA and join the Great West in 1992. This was also a sign of things to come, as Boise State and Idaho would also both make the jump to the Big West four years later.
This was probably the time of the most change for the Big Sky, as the response to losing the two Idaho schools was to bring in three new teams, Sacramento State, Portland State, and Cal State Northridge. Of those, two would prove to be good additions, while the one name Cal State would only stick around until 2000, and would go on to disband their football program the following year.
But it’s been in just the last fifteen years that the Big Sky has perhaps seen the most change. With changing athletic landscapes, the conference has seen the addition of six new (or returning) football members (two of which are football affiliates only), and the loss of one (with another soon to be gone). This started with the addition of Northern Colorado in 2006, and then 2012’s addition of North Dakota and Southern Utah as full members and UC Davis and Cal Poly as associated football members.
Rounding things out, our dear friends in Moscow would become the first fully FBS program to transition back down to the FCS since the forced transitions that spawned the subdivision split. While rejoining the conference in 2014, they wouldn’t officially make the move back to FCS football in the conference until 2018. This corresponded pretty well with the loss of North Dakota, who played their last season as a Big Sky member in 2017 before transition over to the MVFC.
This will also be the last season we see Southern Utah play in the conference, as they’ve announced their plans to move to the newly-reestablished WAC come the 2022 season. This means this will be the last season (for now) that the Big Sky will have 13 teams, with 2022 becoming the first time that the conference will have had just 12 football members.

FCS National Championships
Big Sky teams hold claim to a total of 6 national championships at the FCS/Division IAA level. Of those, 5 were earned by teams that are still Big Sky members.
Funny side note: the conference claims 7 FCS football titles here, but unless I really missed something I’ve got no idea who that 7th team is supposed to be.
  • 1980 - Boise State (10-3, 6-1 in conference)
  • 1981 - Idaho State (12-1, 6-1 in conference)
  • 1984 - Montana State (12-2, 6-1 in conference)
  • 1995 - Montana (13-2, 6-1 in conference)
  • 2001 - Montana (15-1, 7-0 in conference)
  • 2010 - Eastern Washington (13-2, 7-1 in conference)

Note: I'm sure I'm missing some. So if you know of any others (that updated at least once since the 2019 season), comment below and I'll add them. I also didn't bother to include multiple links to the various podcasts, but most of them I'm sure can be found on your favorite podcast platform or site.
Also, podcasts in BOLD I know have at least some type of tie to /FCS (even if they post just once or twice a year here). If you know of one that does and we didn't highlight it, let me know and I'll be sure to note and emphasize them!
Individual school threads are posted below. Feel free to discuss individual teams and/or the conference as you see fit!

2021.05.11 06:14 cocobear311 Please help me find my childhood toy!

I am searching for a childhood toy that I’ve never been able to track down or track down anything else like it. I had the toy when I was 3 or 4 years old (2002-2003), and living in Flagstaff, Arizona. It was a clamshell micro-playset, similar to vintage Polly Pockets, however the unit was in the shape of a cheeseburger. The inside was a little house, and I can remember a living room type area. There was a small boy figure, with sandy blonde to brown hair, a blue shirt, and white shorts or pants. He had a small dog figure companion. I had the toy in the winter time of 2002, and it had been snowing. My family was moving south, and on our last day in Flagstaff, I lost the house and boy in the snow.
If you know of any thing similar to this toy, please, please, share that information with me. I have grieved the loss of this toy since I was a baby. I have looked for all kinds of knock offs and branded Polly Pocket toys, and have never even found another food shaped clamshell unit. Any insight is appreciated!!!!
