let's hope this doesn't constitute as homework help because while it is for assignment it's not to solve a problem >_< i'm doing a paper where i need statistics on country incomes, wealth distribution (what percentage holds what amount of wealth) and or a statistic with method of measuring statistic with sample size. i understand that's pretty specific so i mainly am asking if anyone have any advice where i may be able to find these "common statistics" that are more in depth

I think that this is typically the type of idea that looks good on paper but is a nightmare in reality.
I would like your feedback about it: - a platform where you can find experts in a particular industry and be able to book calls or maybe mentorship

2024.05.14 09:46 ReceptionGold9087 Syncronicity Sync-up

Syncronicity Sync-up
I was watching a stream, and we were watching a show, the amazing magical circus. It was magical, especially when it suddenly started to feel like the symbolism just synched up perfectly with my life.
There was a detective character. He was representing me, I have been trying to write a detective story lately, so that was kinda odd.
There's also a clown girl. The clown girl representing the streamer I was watching. And she was part of a circus which represents Twitch.
And they even used an idea I had before, a world made of candy. I remember I had a dream about a candy world once, because in second grade there was this 5 grader that was bullying me, and I told the teacher about the dream I had were I was in a candy world where he was the liquorish enemy, because wasn’t really a fan of liquorish.
Then not too long ago I found a book about a candy world, called The Cannibals of Candyland. So I toyed with the idea if maybe I could make some story incorporating that aspect. Since I had that idea before as a kid. But it seems like this concoction of my ideas has already been made in to the amazing magical circus.
As I started to see the grid, the same happened to the detective character. They even said so in the show, that the detective was off the map. He was behind the scenes just like I was. We observed the boundaries of reality. It made me feel like I was observing everything from outside of my body.
https://preview.redd.it/eec6sl4xjc0d1.png?width=900&format=png&auto=webp&s=933c0fd5f8fbe360b155a350a3867a722b73e113
This could be open to multiple layers of interpretation. Symbolism is often reflective of perspectives and experiences.
The symbols seem to interconnect in a way that resonates personally, possibly reflecting themes of identity, creativity, and perception. For example:
  • The Detective: Often symbolizes inquiry, investigation, or the search for truth. Since I'm working on my own detective story, this felt like it mirrored my own creative explorations or personal introspections.
  • The Clown Girl: Clowns can represent a range of themes including humor, sadness hidden behind a facade, or life’s absurdities. Associating this figure with the streamer might suggest a view of the streamer as an entertainer or someone who brings joy or lightness.
  • The Candy World: Typically, candy worlds in stories represent places of temptation, indulgence, or childhood innocence and dreams. Your personal connection to this idea through a childhood dream and its later negative association with bullying might add a complex layer, indicating both sweetness and underlying challenges or threats.
When the detective went off the map, my identification with this character as observing from outside of my body adds another layer of depth, potentially reflecting feelings of detachment, being unseen, or having a unique perspective that isn't fully understood by others.
Synchronicity often makes events feel special or significant because it disrupts our usual understanding of how cause and effect work. These moments can be inspiring, especially when engaging in creative or intellectual work like writing.
In this case, these synchronicities, where external media seem to reflect or connect to my personal life and thoughts. Like the universe is aligning in a peculiarly personal way. This could evoke a sense of wonder or a feeling of being personally connected to a larger narrative or pattern.

2024.05.14 09:40 adulting4kids Commandments of Writing

The Art of Deception: Crafting Characters That Lie, Cheat, and Steal Your Reader's Hearts
My dear young storytellers, it's time to enter the realm of the truly delicious: the art of creating characters so real, so vibrant, so delightfully flawed that your readers will desperately want to grab them by the shoulders and either shake them or offer them a hug (and possibly a strong drink).
Commandment #11: Heroes Are Boring (Embrace the Anti-Hero)
A flawless, always-do-the-right-thing hero makes for a rather dull story. Give your characters some baggage to unpack, some questionable decisions in their past, a healthy dose of selfishness or a pinch of cowardice. These are the cracks where the light of redemption gets in, the flaws that make them relatable…and infinitely more interesting.
Commandment #12: Your Villain Is the Hero of Their Own Story
Nobody twirls their mustache and cackles, "Mwahaha, I am evil!" A truly compelling villain genuinely believes they're the good guy. Give them a motivation that the reader can almost understand, a twisted logic that justifies their actions. This makes them far more chilling and harder to defeat.
Commandment #13: Minor Characters Matter (No Cardboard Cutouts Allowed)
Even the grumpy barista who serves your protagonist a double-shot of reality can have a spark of personality. A unique detail, a snappy line, a hidden backstory hinted at in a single gesture – this brings your fictional world to life. Remember, everyone is the star of their own narrative.
Commandment #14: Dialogue Is Not Just Talking Heads
Dialogue is a weapon, a seduction, a tool for revelation. It should reflect your characters' personalities, reveal their hidden motives, and advance the plot all at once. Make your characters' voices as distinct as their fingerprints. Study how people really talk – the pauses, interruptions, the unspoken words lingering between the lines.
Commandment #15: Actions Speak Louder Than Internal Monologues
Sure, internal monologues can be great, but don't rely on them to tell the story. Show us your characters through what they do, what they choose, and what they desperately try to hide. Actions leave far deeper impressions on a reader than pages of introspection.
World-Building for Beginners (and How to Avoid Info-Dumping)
Ah, the intoxicating power of creating entire worlds! But beware, young architects of universes, there's a fine line between a rich setting and a dry encyclopedia entry. Let's make sure your readers are booking guided tours of your world, not yawning in the face of a geography lecture.
Commandment #16: Start Small, Expand Slowly
Resist the urge to cram all your brilliant world-building details into the first chapter. Ground the reader in your protagonist's immediate world – their room, their village, their annoying neighbor. Layer in the larger world organically through action and dialogue.
Commandment #17: Sensory Overload (In a Good Way)
Don't just tell us about your world; make us feel it. The sting of salt wind on a sea voyage, the scent of otherworldly spices in a fantastical marketplace, the rough texture of ancient stone beneath trembling fingers – engage all the senses to make your setting come alive.
Commandment #18: Rules Are Made to Be Broken
While consistency in world-building is key, a single, shocking exception to the rules can be magic. Just when your reader thinks they understand your magic system, hit them with the unpredictable. It sparks wonder, curiosity, and those delicious "aha!" moments.
Commandment #19: If It Doesn't Affect the Plot, Chop It
You may have created the most intricate political system in the galaxy, but if it doesn't directly impact your protagonist's struggle, it needs to be edited down. Remember, world-building needs to serve the story, not overshadow it.
Commandment #20: Research Is Your Secret Weapon
Even in the most fantastical realms, grounding your world in some element of reality makes it believable. Research medieval sword-making, Icelandic folklore, or the migratory patterns of butterflies. These real-world details add unexpected texture and believability to your fictional creations.

2024.05.14 09:29 Tezz_oj First trip to Paris staying in Vincennes

Hello,
I’m visiting Paris for the first time next month for a long weekend with my Wife.
We booked into a hotel in Vincennes without much research (it’s a nice hotel at the price sold us).
I’ve done a bit of research and it looks to be about 6km from the city center, we’re more interested in wandering sampling the food and drink than doing the touristy attractions just wondering if anyone had any experience of the transport links to the city center and also what local life is like in Vincennes we land late afternoon planning on just exploring the local area
Thanks

2024.05.14 09:27 HaletaleInc How Property Management Software Transformed These Rental Businesses

In the dynamic world of rental businesses, staying ahead of the curve is crucial. Property management software rental has emerged as a game-changer, streamlining operations and enhancing tenant interactions. But how exactly has this technology transformed the industry? Let’s dive into real-world examples and uncover the benefits and efficiencies gained through this innovative tool.

Introduction

Imagine managing a rental property using just a ledger book, a stack of paper files, and your memory. It sounds almost primitive in today's digital age, right? Property management software is like the smartphone of rental management—once you have it, you can't imagine life without it.

The Challenges of Traditional Management

Traditional property management often involves cumbersome processes that can be time-consuming and error-prone. Tracking payments, maintenance requests, and tenant inquiries manually not only leaves room for errors but also eats up valuable time.

What is Property Management Software?

Property management software is a digital platform that automates and streamlines the administrative and operational tasks of managing rental properties. This software ensures that everything from tenant screening to lease termination is handled efficiently and effectively.

Case Study: Efficiency in Action

Let’s consider the transformation of Cityscape Rentals. Before implementing property management software, the company struggled with delayed rent payments and inefficient maintenance scheduling. Now, automated reminders and easy online payment options have nearly eliminated late payments, and maintenance tickets are addressed promptly.

Financial Management and Reporting

With property management software, rental businesses gain insights into their financial health through detailed analytics and reporting features. This allows for better budgeting and financial planning.

Maintenance and Operations

The software offers features like automated maintenance scheduling, which helps in timely maintenance, ensuring tenant satisfaction and extending the lifespan of property assets.

Tenant Communication and Satisfaction

Enhanced communication features in the software allow for real-time updates and notifications to tenants, which significantly improves tenant satisfaction and retention.

Security and Compliance

Staying compliant with housing laws and regulations is simplified with property management software, which can update its features in accordance with changing laws.

Integrations and Scalability

Modern property management software often integrates with other tools such as accounting software, payment gateways, and more, making it a scalable solution that grows with your business.

Case Study: Enhanced Tenant Experience

At Lakeview Apartments, the introduction of property management software has transformed the tenant experience. Online lease applications, digital lease signing, and a tenant portal for communication and payment have streamlined the entire tenant lifecycle.

Cost Savings and ROI

The initial investment in property management software is quickly offset by the savings from more efficient operations and the avoidance of costly errors and disputes.

Implementing the Software

Implementing property management software requires careful planning and training but is generally straightforward with the support from reputable software providers.

Future of Rental Management Software

As technology advances, so too will property management software, with potential future features like AI-driven analytics and enhanced virtual reality property tours.

Conclusion

The transformation brought about by property management software in the rental business sector is profound. By automating day-to-day tasks, enhancing tenant communication, and ensuring compliance, these tools allow businesses to focus on growth and customer satisfaction.

2024.05.14 09:23 MrKurthal When I was 19 I agreed to take "Phantom Drive." It's been 7 years, and I'm starting to remember my other life. [Part One]

You make pretty regrettable mistakes when you're desperate. Unfortunately, desperation would go on to cost me much more than I ever thought possible.
When I was 19 years old my financial situation wasn't great. In what was left of a crumbling home would be my recovering addict twin sister, and myself. The unfortunate state of our home was all from the even more unfortunate passing of our parents just five years prior. The two hadn't died tragically by any means, thankfully. No.. our parents died of old age, a consequence of having us kids later in life, while not being able to take on the financial burden that would be.. us.
My sister was making the early steps into the college lifestyle, doing her best to stay afloat with my support in funding. Money was tight for the two of us, but as she became more well off on her own, the more content she was with severing the last remaining tie to her childhood.. me.
I didn't hate Xel for her decision, if anything I understood her distancing from this life.. even if it saddened me. So then it was just me! Left to a house with a hole in the ceiling. Believe it or not, life wasn't all to bad even with how considerably down in the dumps it otherwise seemed to be.
However, content as I might have been, it's human nature to want more than you have. Can't say I was to greedy to look for some comfortability in my own home..
And so there it was! The glistening letters of ink outlining my salvation. An advertisement I'd found plastered onto the wall of the small booth I sat at while I waited for the bus to carry me off to work. "$5,000 to those compatible for a recent scientific breakthrough." Under any 'normal' circumstances I would consider this a scam. Hell, I was skeptical as I scanned the letters. Had I been told of this opportunity through spam call or text I would've glossed right over it just as anyone else would have.. but I was desperate.
I think it was the fact that someone, some real person had to have put this paper up on this wall gave me some glimmer of hope for a quick cash grab. Listed bellow the promise of money was details for a number to call regarding interest in the proposition.
I took the bait.. I saw the line, and like some idiot I clamped my teeth down just for that hook to sweep me away.
The corporation I'd come to know as, "The Arsaction," would see me just a week later. There was a brief consultation. They took my weight, age, all things I would've expected. It wasn't until they pulled records regarding my familial situation that I began to find this whole ordeal.. suspicious.
To 'begin' to find things suspicious only at this point is foolish, something I full understand, but I feel the need to reinforce the fact that I, Lex McKarthy, was desperate.
Everything by this point seemed pretty legit. The blood tests, the doctors office, the tests were.. reasonable. What was I to suspect? Everything was so vague, and truth be told I honestly didn't even expect anything to come of this visit. All the doctors, all the consultants seemed so disinterested in my features.. but when they realized I had no one, everything seemed to change.
Suddenly ears perked, suddenly doors closed, suddenly I was.. exactly what they were looking for. Every feature of myself was so painfully average. I was anyman, I was.. nothing. Despite their best efforts to be discreate, I knew it was only the fact that nobody would come looking for me that peaked their interests.
My stomach dropped when I was faced with a pen in my hand, trembling over that NDA. Every fiber of me cursed myself for never considering putting just a minute of research into 'The Arsaction,' however a video briefing would ease my nerves. Nobody knew who The Arsaction was. There was no public record of their existence, and that NDA would make sure that they continued to never exist.
I was stupid, I was irrational, I was in over my head! But I was desperate.. and I had nothing else.
"I have nothing else.. I have nothing else!"
It was a mantra I chanted as I was injected with that substance. The substance that turned my blood orange, made my skin freakishly thin.
And then I went home.
That was it. I was given my sum of money, and I was sent home. They told me I was, "good to go," and no number of questions would get a one of them to speak. I was only met with who I'd assume to be security guiding me out of the building.
Not a word more of what I'd just been injected with, only given instructions to not dwell on mirrors for too long. That was it, just some ominous instructions. So I left, as befuddled as I arrived. Relief washed over me as I made my way home. The anxiety I'd received from such an ominous buildup was all waved by the fact that I was somehow just.. good to go?
Relief quickly turned to panic as the inherent nature of it all being too good to be true set in. I expected to die, I expected some visit from government agents, I expected anything and everything, but as months turned to years.. Nothing ever came of it. No mirror ever caused me any harm, which was its own anxiety I'd have to overcome simply because of the absurd nature or such a request.
I hoped it was.. some prank. Everything was well... for a time. Until my sister called.
I just.. watched the phone ring. My sister, someone who I hadn't spoken to in upwards of 8 years was suddenly ringing me up. When I finally had answered, her question left me speechless.
"Hey Lex. would you happen to remember Mom's recipe for that egg toast? I think I left the cookbook at your place."
I felt my ears ring. The question was so.. casual. She entirely skipped the part where we discussed how she's been, how I'm doing. She spoke to me like we'd hung out only days ago.
At the time I'd thought I was just being dramatic, but looking back on it I can only justify my own hesitation to respond.
"W-..what?"
I stammered like a fool, but I was firm in my disbelief.
"Yeah, it should be in the book on the counter?"
I looked over my shoulder to my kitchen counter, past the toaster I never bought, and over to the book she spoke of. My jaw hung heavy, the whole interaction feeling like a dream.
With one hand I held the phone, and with the other I began to skim the pages of the book letting my eyes linger on mom's cinnamon roll recipe for a bit longer than intended.
"Lex.. are you ok?"
My sister inquired on the other end. I suddenly felt sick.. falling the the ground and laying on my back. This wasn't happening. It never did.
"Lex? Are you alright!?"
My sister repeated back more urgently, followed by her assurance that she would be over soon to check on him. But.. no company ever arrived. After hours the line just dropped, and I fell asleep there on that cold, wooden floor, paralyzed with a feeling I couldn't wrap my head around.
This never happened.
I never left.
I woke up in my bed in a cold sweat. I checked the time, greeted with a humble 4:37 in the morning. What troubled me was the fact that the date had been set back 7 years.
Of course it wasn't all so clear to me. After 7 long years I'd honestly forgotten about this day. This was the day that I'd set out for my graciously provided $5,000
7 years of my fucking life.. I would chalk it all up to that.. STUFF that they injected me with.. what was it? Phantom Drive? I could call it all some terrible drug trip, some construct defined by some insane psychedelic, but if that were the case, how was I here now? BEFORE I'd ever taken the drug?
This is a dream. I convinced myself I hadn't miraculously gone back in time, that 7 years of my life weren't a lie, but if that were the case, why was my blood still that damn orangy hue?
I'm losing sleep over this itch in my brain. It's like some taste of blood in my mouth has soured out the idea that letting my eyelids squeeze shut could further obscure my definite understanding of when I stood.
A day I remember so vividly at the ripe age of 14 years old, now 12 years ago, I awoke to the sweet smell of cinnamon rolls filling the air. All was right with the world, all as I climbed from the messy sheets in my dark room. It was abundantly clear that the bulb of the light beside my bed had burnt out over the course of the night, and the closed blinds didn't aid my vision as I stumbled around my room in search of my door.
An oddity presented itself in the fashion of aimless wondering. Where was the nob? One I'd become so accustomed to.. not needing to open? I'd never closed my door. Not the previous night, not ever. Not to the behest of my mother who'd always taken annoyance to closed doors, some trait of my grandmother's to which my mom had unfortunately inherited.
Breakfast took the form of two strips of bacon, scrambled eggs, and slightly burnt French-Toast. My previous assumption of cinnamon rolls unfortunately missed the mark, however I wouldn't object to this. I wish I could convince myself that I was wrong. Something so mundane, something so insignificant to the events in this story, however the first notable instance of a curse that I couldn't pinpoint
My mother had already seen herself off to work by this point, and so I was faced with the responsibilities of seeing myself out to the bus. Some routine I'd become far too used to; The minutes passed, leaving me with nothing to do but wait by the door for a buss that would never arrive.
If the door being shut and the cinnamon rolls being a different meal entirely had left me with a minor confusion, then suddenly being seated in the passenger seat of my mother's car listening to the nonchalant complaints from my twin sister about the nuances freshmen year math shot me into a disarray I couldn't possibly quantify.
I think one of the scariest things for me is the fact that I thought nothing of it. I hadn't freaked out. No scene was made to express what should have been one of the more disturbing instances of my childhood.
I could chalk up the mistaking breakfast for something else as me just misremembering events.. But something unmistakable is the fact that somehow my mom both never drove me to school, yet the fact that she.. always had.
If you're confused, I understand. I am too, because the contradicting nature of my memory is something that haunts me to no end.
Things were easier as a child. That's often the case, but ever sense I stopped aging, I've begun to notice the oddities presented by life that are.. inexplainable. I'm not even sure where to start with researching my predicament. Hell, this is reddit! If I couldn't find an answer here, I doubt there is an answer to be found at all.
The Mandela Effect is something that I feel needs no introduction. To those who don't know, the Mandela Effect, in brief, is a phenomenon that incurs when you "misremember" something. Think of a card, now imagine you saw that card as a child and it had a single heart drawn on it's center. Now, years later you are discussing this card with someone else just for them to tell you that the heart you swear, the heart you KNOW you saw.. was a diamond. You tell them they are wrong, you shake your head, chuckle nervously.. But then they present you with the card.
Your stomach drops. This can't be the card, there is no way! Only it is the card, and when you come to the realization that it is in fact the card you'd seen as a child, you are filled with a mix of confusion, fascination, and quite possibly denial.
Most often, the Mandela Effect is associated with silly things like books titles, and board game mascots, but my experience is far beyond such things. It's the only phenomenon I've found that seems even within the realm of explaining my predicament. Problem is, the more I think, the more is wrong.
All of me wishes it all ended with that one childhood experience! But it didn't. In fact, the more I consider my childhood, the more contradictions I notice. Part of me believes I could handle this if it was limited to my childhood, but it's not. This.. experience... It effects my every day!
I'm not losing my mind, I'm just picking up crumbs that I never dropped. Not.. losing my mind, just finding more "mind" than the inventory should account for.

2024.05.14 09:07 Select_Narwhal1408 Should I continue to write this book? Is it worth it?

This is a random sample of my book I’ve been working on and I was just wondering if anyone thought it was worth it or if I should give up on this one, romance isn’t my thing but I gave it a shot. 🫣
They were in New York together. She was meeting with publishers for her new book, scared to face the big apple by herself she invited him. They arrived at the hotel after a crazy day at the busy airport, thankfully they had no complications. They walked in to be greeted with two beds and a beautiful balcony. She sighed flipping down on one the beds, kicking her shoes off on the floor below her.
“Hey, imma go grab a shower it’s been a long day.” That was the first time he’d spoke since they arrived, his nerves shot from flying for the first time. She sat up and simply nodded, agreeing that a shower sounds like a great idea. While she waited for her turn she took this time to unpack her luggage into the dresser, leaving out her night clothes neatly folded on the top of the dresser. Just as she shut the drawer her best friend walked out with only a towel around his waist, water droplets glistening on his dark skin. Her eyes scanned his slightly toned body before he cleared his throat. She quickly averted her eyes looking anywhere but in his direction. They had been friends for years, FRIENDS, she had almost never thought of him as more. There was one time she thought he might like her but she was proven wrong. “Yeah, I’ll just head to the shower…” The air now thick and slightly awkward for the two, she slid her wad past him and into the bathroom locking the door behind her. She reached only for the cold water nob, her skin was hot she needed to cool down. She quickly was in and out of the shower, stepping out she dried off and brush her teeth. Slipping into her silk matching pajamas, she slowing excited the bathroom. He was sat with her back against the head board reading her book. “So she’s an alien and an also a princess?” He looked up at her. She nodded “It’s not that simple but yes.” She giggled sitting down beside him. “I didn’t know you were interested in my book?” “Well it’s simple really, I’m interested in everything you do.”

2024.05.14 09:02 sassiesgirl American Airlines has the worst Customer Service, Policies, Organizational skill

When: Sunday 5-12-2024
Where: O’Hare International Airport, American Airlines
Items Lost and/or stolen:
1. Remarkable 2, The paper Tablet
2. Marker Plus w/ Tablet
3. Remarkable 2 folio case
On 5-11-2024, I flew American Airline from North Carolina to Chicago Ohara International airport. The plane sat right off the runway for about an hour, the plane had no gate to park. Most of the passengers missed their connecting flight. I missed my connection to Portland OR by minutes. I was rebooked for a flight for the next day to Portland via Dallas Tx On Sunday 5-12-2024 at 2:40pm. When boarding the plane, we had to check in our carry-on bag because it was full (I had my work laptop and new Remarkable 2 tablet in my carry-on). We started to taxi out to the runway, then stopped. After about 40 minutes, the pilot came on the speaker and said there would be a delay of about ½ hour to an hour. He then came on to the speaker and said that they were now saying it would be 1-3 hours and he had decided to deplane. The flight was then cancelled. I could not get my carry-on, because it would be going to Dallas and then Portland once a flight went out. I was able to book another flight to Portland 6 hours later. When I landed, I was able to get my check in bag, it had arrived the day before, but the carry-on that I did not want to check in was not there. It would be there in about an hour. So, I waited. By this time, I had spent about 2days or about 30 hours in the airports (they did give me a $12.00 food voucher- you cannot even get a sandwich for that price). I was so exhausted I grabbed my baggage when it got there, and we drove another hour to Salem. By this time, I had been travelling and in airports since Saturday morning at 9:00am and it was now after Midnight Sunday night /Monday morning. I was able to get home about 2:30am.
I slept for a couple of hours and when I opened my carry-on the laptop was in there, but the tablet was gone. I had just bought it just over a month ago and all together had spent $444.99.
I have tried filing a claim, you cannot do that w/o filing a missing baggage report. My bag is not missing. My tablet is. You cannot file a claim w/o original receipt within 24 hours. There is no one to whom you can talk. No one to help you. The one gal I managed to get ahold of was customer service but not for complaints or baggage problems. Her comment to me was “there are over 44 million customers a day with problems, you think we want talk to all of them”. That is what American Airlines thinks of their customers.
I knew my tablet was in the bag when they made me check my bag. They should be held liable. For as long as they held onto the luggage, anyone could have opened it up and took it. I am hoping I am wrong, and it is in the airport somewhere. Chicago, Portland, or Dallas. I feel like I will never see it again.
I know this, I will never fly AA again. They have terrible service, there planes are not in very good shape, just an all-around bad experience. I heard a lot of passengers complain about the airline. No one had anything good to say about them.
How many people has this happened to? Can they just get away with stealing and ripping people off? Making people’s lives miserable by having one of the most unorganized people and baggage and fight handling systems in the world.
Is there a chance a class action lawsuit could be filed? I am sorry I cannot just let them take $500 from me; I work too hard for my money. I feel like they have robbed me.

2024.05.14 08:42 aahdin JK rowling, transracial/transgender comparison

I originally wrote this out in this BPT thread on JK rowling comparing being transgender to being transracial, but the thread got locked to country club only as I was writing. I thought I'd post it here.
I had a philosophy class where this was a prompt for a paper - basically analyzing the philosophical differences between transracialism and transgenderism. This was back in like 2017. (One of several prompts, I didn't write on it)
Rachel Dolezal was the required reading / case study for transracialism. It generated a lot of pretty interesting discussion. Reading the wikipedia on her now though is kinda crazy, it seems like a lot of weird stuff came out on her in the last 7 years.
I reviewed a few papers on it and we went over some others in class, I can't remember it all but from what I remember most of the arguments were along the lines of this ask social science post which essentially argues that race is something external defined by how others interact with you, while gender is something internal defined by how you see yourself.
That said... I've always felt like that answer was a bit too clean cut. There's obviously an external aspect to gender as well, people treat and see you differently based on your gender, and there are a lot of societal expectations placed on you based on your gender. For someone like Rowling I can kinda see why she would identify with this, with her womanhood largely coming in as an external thing that people bring in to analyze her writing. Also when she wrote her first book she was a divorced broke single mom, which I'm sure is a very external way to experience womahood.
Maybe we should have two different words for the internal experience and the external experience of belonging to a group?
I think Rowling is clearly way too reductive the other direction though - none of the trans women I know are just 'well I like long hair and taylor swift so I guess I'm a girl'. The internal experience of feeling a certain gender is certainly a lot deeper than that.

2024.05.14 08:35 PerilousPlatypus [WP]You always thought your spouse hated you because you two were an arranged marriage. After their death, you found their journal and learned the truth. They loved you all along. They just weren't good at showing or expressing it.

You think a lot about the things you didn't say when you can no longer say them. That's the great tragedy of loss -- the finality of it. There is no next chapter once the book has ended.
Or so I thought.
We were married young and for politics. Her father possessed troops and my father possessed legitimacy. It made for an ideal match on paper, but a poor one in person. The differences in our suitability for one another were immediately apparent. She was beautiful and graceful. I was smart but lacking in most other respects other than title. Our wedding artist did me much justice in the portrait, but the injustice of the pairing was clear enough to all.
I had few expectations that she would like me. None that she would love me. I hoped for it and made my effort, but tolerance was the best I could manage. She had the regal bearing of one born for the court, I could simply could not break through to anything beyond. For each gesture there was always a polite and dignified response, but little more.
Still, I cared for her and she was diligent in her duties. She would attend to me when required and play the host with the utmost of care when entertaining. Unfailingly it was commented on that I was a lucky and fortunate man to be have blessed with a wife with so many manifest gifts.
And I agreed, both in voice and in soul.
It is a great pain to love and receive none in return. I often wished to tear it from my body, like a cancerous tumor that slowly ate at the edges of my sanity. It would be so much easier to be done with the feelings within and focus my attentions elsewhere.
But I couldn't. She was all that I desired.
Even when the sickness came, my heart did not change. It redoubled its affection.
Many a night I sat beside her, either in silence or with a book of tales she liked best. As the flame guttered and flickered, I would close the book and lay my hand on hers. She would mumble, lost in the tincture dreams, and I would depart.
Each morning I would greet her, accompanied by fresh cuttings from her garden and the ungodly tea she was required to consume throughout the day. She would thank me for both and ask whether I required anything of her.
"Get well." Is all I would say. Then I would bow and leave her to those whose company she preferred to my own. So many times I pondered whether to say more, whether to unburden my heart. But it would be a selfish thing to settle my heavy load upon the shoulders of one so frail.
The days passed and her condition worsened. Other doctors were summoned and other treatments offered. Each seemed worse than the last, as if the only way to kill the disease was to kill the patient alongside it. I vented my frustrations upon them, but it made little difference.
In the end, she was a wisp. Always fragile, but now frail. The light still shimmered in her eyes, but so much else had gone. Her whispers were weak rasps and I was forced to lean closer to hear. I offered her what comfort I could, but there was little comfort to be had.
On the final night, I came in the evening, book and candle in hand. I sat beside her and opened the book.
She shook her head and whispered a word.
I could not hear her. I leaned close. "No."
"You do not want the book?" I asked.
She shook her head again and pointed a trembling hand to the nightstand. On it stood a small diary. I looked from it to her, confused. "Do you want me to read that?"
"Yes."
I set the book of tales aside and picked up the diary. It was timeworn, covered in brown leather. I gave her a look and, upon her encouraging nod, opened it. I read aloud.
24th of Harvest, Year 732
I am to be married tomorrow. Father says that the Prince is a good match. I am worried. How will he find me? How will I find him? What shall I do if he finds me unacceptable? Father says I am always count on my training, that I have been educated in the proper way of being a wife and it shall ensure I perform well.
I hope I am okay to him.
I looked up from the tome. Her eyes were closed and her breath shallow.
25th of Harvest, Year 732
I am told the Prince is a fine man. That he is kindly and treats the servants well. I do not think this much to base an opinion on, but it is better than to hear he is cruel. In minutes, I will be attended to and prepared for the nuptials. I have prepared myself for what is to come, but I am scared.
Father says it would not be a duty if it were easy. I wish I had a mother of my own for guidance, I feel so lost.
A single tear had made its way from the corner of her eyes and down along her cheek. It glistened in the candlelight. I paused, "Would you like me to stop?" She shook her head.
26th of Harvest, Year 732
I am married. It feels so strange to say.
I am still scared, but not of him. He is clever and amiable. He has a nice smile. I will do my duty to him as a wife. I will not let him down. I will not let my own sentiments cloud my obligations to him.
"Further...later..." She whispered. A clumsy hand rose from her chest and landed on the diary, pushing the pages along.
13th of Long Night, Year 735
I love you.
Why can we not just say it to one another?
I looked up, my eyes wide.
Hers were closed, never open again.
I took her hand in mine and pulled it close. "I love you," I said for the first time to my bride. In the days the followed, during the dark bleakness of grief, I would read the same from her, repeated across the pages of our life together. It is strange that I should find the love I wanted only once the giver was gone. We had been so close in our hearts, but so far in our minds. It created a same desolation in me, to know how close we had been. How close we could have been.
But perhaps it is better to have loved and lost than to have never found the book at all.

Unveiling the best essay writing services on Reddit: a student's guide
Hey fellow Redditors and students,
Navigating the maze of essay writing services can be quite daunting, especially when you’re juggling deadlines and trying to maintain your GPA. Today, I'm here to share my personal experiences with two popular services that have been lifesavers during my academic journey.
speedypaper.com – quick, reliable, and user-friendly
Speedy Paper has been a go-to for me for several semesters now, and for good reason. One of the biggest advantages of SpeedyPaper is their turnaround time. They live up to their name, offering prompt deliveries without compromising on quality. I’ve had assignments done in less than 24 hours, and they've consistently nailed the brief every time.
The user interface of their website is another plus. It’s clean, intuitive, and makes the ordering process a breeze. Even if you’re not particularly tech-savvy, you’ll find navigating their site and placing an order to be straightforward.
Price-wise, SpeedyPaper offers a great balance between cost and quality. They often have discounts and loyalty schemes, which is great for us students who are always on a budget. Their customer service is also top-notch, available 24/7, ready to assist with any queries or issues you might encounter.

writepaperfor.me – affordable quality for every student
WritePaperFor.Me is another service that I’ve found to be incredibly helpful throughout my college life. What sets them apart is their affordability. They offer some of the most competitive prices in the market, which is a major consideration for budget-conscious students like me.
Despite their low prices, the quality of work they deliver is impressive. The essays I’ve received have been well-researched, well-written, and thoroughly proofread. There’s a range of writers to choose from, and you can see their qualifications and areas of expertise, which helps in making an informed decision about who will handle your paper.
Their customer support is also commendable. They’re responsive and handle any revisions quickly. This service is particularly appealing for longer-term projects, where you might need to engage with your writer multiple times to tweak and refine your essay.

Final thoughts
Both SpeedyPaper.com and WritePaperFor.Me offer distinct advantages depending on what you prioritize in an essay writing service. Speedy Paper is ideal if you need something done quickly and without fuss, while Write Paper For Me is perfect if you’re trying to keep expenses down without sacrificing quality.
Remember, the key to a successful partnership with an online writing service is clear communication. Be precise about your requirements, deadlines, and expectations to ensure the best possible outcome.
If you’re on the fence about using these services, both websites offer samples and reviews that can give you a better idea of what to expect. And as always, make sure to use these services ethically – they’re there to assist with your learning, not replace it.
Feel free to share your experiences or ask questions if you’re considering these services for your next project!

2024.05.14 08:29 Dull_Acanthaceae6147 What the hell happened to this company (and what other ESL company values teachers like VIPKID *used to*)?

Anyone who worked at VIPKID *before* the 'restructuring' might have noticed how much the company has changed.
In the past, account suspensions were rare (in fact, I never experienced one until 2023), while now, they seem to hand them out like candy for the most trivial of reasons (and almost always due to STUDENT/PARENT-SIDE issues that are blamed on the teacher - even when presented with contravening evidence).
Obviously, such heavy-handed punishments (suspensions seem to last anywhere from a week to a month) help no one when they are (as is almost always the case) the result of 'unrepresentative' petty grievances, misplaced anger, or even acts of God (such as rare and unscheduled internet outages/unforeseeable IT issues).
When teachers are 'punished' for any reason other than negligence, it becomes an 'authoritarian' exercise without constructive lessons to be learned, and with no benefit to either the complaining student/parent, company, student population (and LEAST of all the teacher - who often remains the ONLY injured party).
VIPKID claims that these policy changes are in support of students - but given the arbitrary nature of the complaints, I feel 'indulge' is the better word.
The question is - what is the REAL reason the company culture changed so drastically in devaluing its teachers?
What caused the shift in attitudes from supportive, to abusive and hostile?
As I said earlier, pandering to an unrepresentative sample of toxic complainers can only indulge the *extreme* minority at the expense of the majority (regular students become annoyed when being deprived of their favorite teachers).
So, I don't buy the 'business' angle.
Lastly, are there any ESL/Teaching companies out there who actually *VALUE* teachers while treating them with *DIGNITY* and *RESPECT*, rather than as a piece of toilet paper, fit only to be used and discarded?

2024.05.14 08:21 Manic-Moonbabe Ofsted in a PRU

Hello,
I'm an ECT 2 in a PRU and another academy in our trust has just had their call.
I'm really worried about ofsted looking in my books. They don't reflect progress like my books in a mainstream do. There are swearwords written on the books, graffiti on the books, lots of refusal to work etc. I feel like my pupils make so much progress but it's not always obvious in their books as a lot of their progress is managing to stay in the classroom, having the courage to answer a question in a class, using their manners, stopping conversational swearing etc.
We're currently rated outstanding and I feel like the bar is so high.

2024.05.14 07:57 MajorAlert3278 Help with Elsie De Wolfe Furniture piece?

Help with Elsie De Wolfe Furniture piece?
details: This was the only information I could find online about a similar item.
An element of classic traditional decors conceived by interior decorators such as Elsie De Wolfe, Sister Parish, Jansen andMario Buatta, red lacquer case pieces--such as this glass-door vitrine set atop a commode with three drawers lined in decorative paper--came into fashion in the eighteenth century. This unique example, signed and dated, was painted in 1951 by James Reynolds (NÉ Harold Warner Reynolds, 1891-1957), an award-winning costume and set designer, book illustrator, author , and wallpaper and textile designer who was born in New York City and died in Bellagio, Italy. His works include murals for the Palladian Ballroom at the Omni Shoreham Hotel in Washington, D.C., the Old Warson Country Club in St. Louis, Missouri, Italy's Villa Torrigiani, near Padua, and Manhattan's House of Hellas, the headquarters of the Friends Of Greece. He also painted a portrait of Happy Landings racehorse owned by beer heiress Mrs. August Busch, and designed costumes for the 1921, 1922, and 1923 editions of the Ziegfeld Follies as well as for Jerome Kerns musical "Sunny", Cole Porter's "fifty Million Frenchmen", and Charles Dillingham's production of "The Last of Mrs. Cheney", Reynolds's paintwork on the item offered here reflects a postwar evocation of the European craze for chinoiserie in the 1700s, its coral-red lacquer finish richly embellished monkeys, and Thai-costumed figures building a pair of caparisoned elephants, the howdahs sheltering a mandarin and his wife. The fantastical effect recalls the Rodgers and Hammerstein musical "The King and I", which had its Broadway premiere the year that Reynolds painted this extravagant furnishing. The presence of shells, both carved and painted, underscores the exotic impression. It is made in two pieces: the electrified vitrine sits atop the commode. Reynolds signed the piece, as well as a matching cocktail table with his initials, J.R., followed by a five-pointed star and the the date. The case piece install, styled after 18th- century Genoese furniture , likely was sourced from Lavezzo, Inc., the Manhattan furniture shop of Reynold's friend Daniel H. Lavezzo (his family long owned the old0guard pub P.J. Clarke's), which was noted for "Period Reproductions". per a 1945 guidebook, and for its Italian-style furnishings, per Reynolds's book "Baroque Splendour" (1950). Lavezzo's firm provided vintage furniture and lighting to Vizcaya, the great Miami mansion of James Deering, and designed a custom-made headboard for actress Marilyn Monroe: John D. Rockefeller was also a client.
