Fallout New Vegas (season 2 fanfiction

2024.05.14 04:16 moderndaywizard956 Fallout New Vegas (season 2 fanfiction

2296, The scene is set in a post apocalyptic Mojave desert, 15 years after a joint effort of the New California Republic, the Rangers, and the mysterious benefactor of the New Vegas Strip, Mr. House pushed back an attempted invasion of the Mojave and a final battle was waved for control of the hydroelectric powerhouse, Hoover Damm.
In the aftermath, Mr. House was removed from power discreetly, due to the actions of a wasteland wanderer on a mission for revenge, known only as the Courier. Mr. House's iconic Lucky 38 casino opened its doors, for the first time, offering a single floor casino and bar, it's upstairs remained an exclusive and mysterious meeting place for the New Vegas Strip's elite. The Lucky 38 represented one of the cleanest, most secure facilities, protected, like the rest of the strip, by the Securitron Mk 2, predominantly. Their presence ensured visitors on the Strip behaved themselves, though the other casinos maintained their own security and 'house rules' internally.
The Strip defined and maintained its status as an independent entity, determining through the Courier's observations that the NCR was stretching it's military might too thin, and couldn't realistically manage over the Strip and Mojave, so a new deal was struck, similar to the prior, but with The Strip extending it's Securitron security to enforce the immediately surrounding communities and a few outlying satelites. Trade to the surrounding areas increased, the Mojave benefitting from the prewar tech, pre-programmed security forces. The drug addicted fiends and other Raider groups would never be any match for their advanced weaponry, and ultimately were cleared out of existence.
The King's continued to watch over Freeside, making alliances with the Follower's of the Apocalypse... their desire to service the needs of the belittled, disadvantaged and destitute lined up, and this is where Mr. Wolf found his place in the story... the Courier and a Follower's doctor found love in the wasteland.... and raised a child together under a Ranger's flag... 23 years later? This is New Vegas...
A handsome man in a leather jacket sat in a dusty leather booth watching one of the girls dance on a pole, shaking her ass as bottle caps clinked on the stage in front of her. It was a swanky post apocalyptic casino strip club. A man in a leather jacket stood nearby, his hands crossed in front of his chest, "Kings" embroidered across the back in silver letters. A waitress approached him carrying a glass of some amber colored liquor, and sat it down at the half moon table. She lingered a moment in her lacey body suit, following his gaze up to the girl rubbing her tits in some older cowboys face.
"You don't get jealous seeing her like that, Mr. Wolf." The girl bit her lip and met his eyes as he picked up his glass and swirled it before giving it a smell and taking a slow swig. He tilted his head looking her over. She couldn't possibly be older then 19. Tight, perky little thing.
Mr. Wolf smirked and shook his head. "I like her... nice and wet when she comes to my bed."
The girl blushed and bit her lip. "So you like to watch?" She surmised.
"I don't mind, but why do you ask?" Wolf had these intense eyes that shot arrows into your very soul. It made her incredibly nervous... but she found it deeply exciting at the same time.
"Well... I'm living in 206 now... maybe... you might stop by sometime and I could dance for you? I know I don't have her body but... if you wanted something that was a little fresher... something... just yours?" She figeted her fingers against the table.
Jason looked her over once more and smirked.
"Two-Oh-six, huh?" He tilted his head, considering.
She nodded.
"Leave your cum soaked panties on my doorknob one of these nights if you really need it and maybe I'll come see if you got the moves." His Texan accent was subdued, but enthrallingly charming with his confident, somewhat bored with reality overtones.
"M-my panties?" She stammered turning bright red. "On your doorknob?" Alexa couldn't believe what she was hearing.
"If you're gunna shoot your shot with a dom... with an alpha... you need to be willing to submit. If you can't do that... I'm not interested." Wolf shrugged, completely unphased.
"But what about... what if..." Alexa glanced at Laura, the clubs most iconic stripper in the club, perhaps even the whole Strip.
She was taking some NCR soldier to the VIP lounge for a private dance.
Alexa had been bold enough to offer herself but now she was feeling nervous. If Laura wanted her out, she could lose her job... her home.
"Oh she won't mind... if anything she'll want to watch." Wolf shook his head, sensing her anxiety.
"Assuming of course... she likes the way you smell... she's funny like that." Wolf let the conversation end and Alexa nervously retreated.
Wolf sat drinking by himself, but got bored.
"Jakey, go get yourself a drink and sit down, I'm bored." Wolf called to his body guard.
Jacob looked over and nodded, giving the lounge one last look around before approaching the bar and getting himself a mug of beer, from the tuxedo shirt and boytie bartender Gerald, and returning to the table.
"What's on your mind boss?" Jacob had his hair slicked back in the usual King's gang hairstyle.
"Heard any rumors lately?" Wold looked at him, taking a drag from his cigarette and flicking the pack over to him.
"Honestly, boss, aside from the occasional drunkard or fiend rolling through freeside, nothing out of the ordinary... well, except... a way's out.. the crazy lady... Gloria was swearing up and down she found a headless metal suit of armor.. said the Enclave would burn down New Vegas. God's wraith and all that, you know how she gets."
"Enclave?" Jason's attention was piqued.
"Yeah, I don't know, she was probably just in withdrawal from the Jet... said she found it in the hollowed out shell of the Super Duper, out by the old highway." Jacob shrugged and drank from his beer and pulled a cigarette from the pack.
Wolf finished the last drag of his own cigarette. "Has anyone validated her claims?"
"Well... no... but... I mean... you've met her, she sees things that aren't there, all the time." Jacob shrugged and lit a cigarette.
Jason squinted, considering the resident crazy ladies most recent half coherent ramblings.
"That's an oddly specific hallucination though....take a group of guys out there tonight... humor me, and make sure she's not right." Wolf lifted his glass.
"Sir?" Jacob raised an eyebrow, thinking surely this could wait until tomorrow.
"Hypothetically" Wolf pondered aloud, "If there was... for some reason, there in-fact was... a pre-war, piece of military tech out there....a T-45, let's say, or T-60, best case scenario? We want it. Even if it's not at 100% capacity? It's fusion core alone... could change up the game for Freeside, something like that could make our tiny little city independent. We wouldn't have to be reliant on the scraps of New Vegas, and forget about the Hoover Dam completely."
Jacob caught Mr. Wolf's drift.. a fusion core could mean producing its own, radiation-free water, it's own electricity.. not just a little, a lot. Powering long dead machines, not to mention the agricultural benefits... producing healthier, higher yield tobacco... expanding their income ten fold.
Jacob suddenly felt like he understood Mr. Wolf's vision for the future.
"I should... go and deploy the King's to investigate." Jacob concluded.
"I think that would be for the best, I can take care of myself here." Wolf waved Jacob off.
Jacob downed his beer and excused himself.
Wolf drank the rest of his whiskey, extinguishing his cigarette.
Laura, the dancer came up to the table, and Wolf motioned to the blushing new waitress for a round, who felt a twinge of jealousy seeing her crush with the most popular stage act in town. She bit her tongue though, bringing over two more heavy pours of whiskey.
Laura eyed the girl as she came and went.
"She likes you." Laura concluded as the waitress walked away.
"Yeah.. I think she does." Mr. Wolf shrugged, flicking her a cigarette.
"The NCR boy liked me." She giggled wiping a little bit of cum from her lips and used half her shot like mouthwash.
"Get anything out of him.. other then.. his seed?" Wolf sighed.
"Of course," She grinned mischievously, "Apparently there's been trouble out West with the Brotherhood. They had some type of skirmish? Apparently NCR lost? NCR was apparently holding some old world tech, I don't know, but apparently it lit up the west coast power grid, like... in it's entirely?" Laura tilted her head to look at him.
"The entire western power grid was lit up by a single piece of tech??" Wolf shook his head at the topless girl beside him.
"Yeah, I had to make him cum twice for more details, but apparently it's the size of a grain of rice, with quote, unlimited energy potential." Laura relayed the information. It seemed more important then a suit of power armor or its fusion core.
"Who else knows about this?" Wolf demanded with his eyebrows squinted against his eyes.
"Anyone with a functional light bulb for... like... three hundred miles?" Laura guessed with a shrug.
"You said... it was the Brotherhood that took the win on the skirmish?" Wolf clarified some details.
"Yeah... rumor has it they have a new up and coming knight that's making waves." Laura shrugged.
"Stay on the rumors... I need details." Mr. Wolf nodded at her, drank his whiskey and stood up, downing his drink.
An energy source that powerful would have a big effect on the balance of power in the Mojave. It could mean a resurrection of the New California Republic to it's former glory and then some, and potentially... might mean a renewed effort to reclaim the western part of the former United States, in time.

2024.05.13 16:14 Leather_Focus_6535 The currently 124 offenders executed by the state of Oklahoma since the 1970s (warning, graphic content, please read at your own risk) [part 1, cases 1-62]

This is the list that I wrote for Oklahoma's execution roster since the nationwide reinstatement of capital punishment in the late 1970s. Something that should be mentioned is that given the nature of many death penalty related crimes, many of the descriptions contain very disturbing details. Please read at your own risk.
Florida's list is next, and I'll post my list for Texas once I've completed it. With Texas, I've currently finished 464 entries out of the 587 cases to date. That will probably take 7 or 8 posts for it all to be released, so I'll probably do two posts a day with Texas to avoid spamming the sub. At the end of this year, I'll repost the states that have conducted further executions with the updated information.
As with Missouri and Virginia, Reddit's maximum character count limitations forced me to divide Oklahoma's list into two separate parts. Here is the link to part 2.
The currently 124 executed offenders, cases 1 to 62:
1. Charles Coleman (~1950s-1990, lethal injection): A month after he was released on parole in 1979, Coleman broke into a house. While sacking it for any valuables, the homeowner’s brother and sister in law, 68 year old John and 62 year old Roxie Seward, walked in on him and were both shot dead. Coleman stole Roxie’s purse, several packets of frozen meat, and the homeowner’s watch during the burglary, and was arrested shortly afterwards. However, Coleman managed to escape custody, and went on a rampage that involved several burglaries, auto thefts, slitting the throat of a policeman in a failed murder attempt, the shooting death of 49 year old Russell Lewis Jr. in a carjacking, and the abduction of a deputy. The kidnapped deputy was rescued following an armed standoff with other police officers. Coleman had an extensive history of animal cruelty, armed robberies, assaults, and carrying concealed weapons convictions dating back to when he was 11 years old. He was also heavily suspected in the murder of his teenage girlfriend’s father, but was acquitted by the courts despite the prosecution’s strong belief in his guilt.
2. Robyn Parks (1977-1992, lethal injection): During a gas station robbery, Parks shot and killed Abdullah Ibrahim, a 24 year old Bangladeshi immigrant that worked as the attendant. According to Parks, he murdered Ibrahim for catching him using a stolen credit card.
3. Olan Randle (1980-1992, lethal injection): Randle invaded a home and shot the occupants, 41 year old Robert Swinford, Sinford's fiance 42 year old Averil Bourque, and Bourque's friend 38 year old Julia Lovejoy, dead. He took a pocket knife and several watches from the victims.
4. Thomas Grasso (~1970s(?)-1995, lethal injection): While living in Oklahoma, Grasso strangled 87 year old Hilda Johnson, the best friend of his girlfriend's grandmother, to death with her Christmas lights. He took $8 from her purse, several coins that added up to $4, and a television set that he sold for $125. Grasso then moved to New York, and strangled 81 year old Leslie Holtz for his social security check. The trialing arrangements caused some controversy, as the New York governors at the time were anti death penalty, and tried to prevent Grasso's extradition in favor of giving him a life sentence in their jurisdiction. Grasso had several previous convictions for theft and was fired multiple times for stealing from his jobs.
5. Roger Stafford (~1974(?)-1995, lethal injection): Stafford was condemned for killing at least 9 people in two separate robbery incidents with his brother and ex wife, though his ex wife claimed that he was involved with as many as 34 murders nationwide. The first convicted incident was when he and the ex wife carjacked and fatally shot a couple, 38 year old Melvin and 31 year old Linda Lorenz, and their son, 12 year old Richard. A few weeks after the Lorenz murders, Stafford stormed a restaurant and gunned down 6 employees, 56 year old Isaac Freeman, 43 year old Louis Zacarias, 17 year old Anthony Tew, 17 year old David Lindsey, 16 year old David Salsman, and 15 year old Terri Horst. One of Stafford's additional attributed victims was 20 year old Jimmy Berry, who was killed in the hold up of an Alabaman McDonalds, but he wasn't charged by the state due to his death sentences in Oklahoma.
6. Robert Brecheen (1983-1995, lethal injection): Breechen was involved in a feud over money with 59 year old Mary Stubbs and her husband. In an attempt to take what he perceived was owed to him, Breechen carried out a night time burglary of their home. While rummaging through the house, Breechen stumbled upon old Marie in her living room and shot her to death. The gunshots and screams awoke her husband, and he chased him away with his own gun.
7. Benjamin Brewer (1978-1996, lethal injection): Brewer raped his neighbor, 20 year old Karen Stapleton, in her home and stabbed her to death
8. Steven Hatch (1979-1996, lethal injection): Hatch and another assailant, Glen Ake, forced themselves inside the home that Richard Dougass, a 43 year old reverend, shared with his wife, 36 year old Marilyn, and their two children, 16 year old Brooks and 12 year old Lesile. The pair tied up the family and raped Lesile in front of her parents and brother. All four family members were shot, and Hatch and Ake ran off with $43 and the parents’ wedding rings. Richard and Marilyn were both killed in the shootings, while their children survived the attack. Ake was also initially condemned for the attack, but his sentence was overturned and resentenced to life following mental health concerns, and passed away from undisclosed natural causes in 2011.
9. Scott Carpenter (1994-1997, lethal injection): In a convenience store robbery, Carpenter stabbed the owner, 56 year old A. J. Kelley, in the neck, and hid the body in the minnow room. He filled his truck with $37 worth of gas from the pumps and drove away from the scene. His execution caused some controversy, as it was reported that Carpenter gasped and spasmed for 11 minutes after being injected.
10. Michael Long (1997-1998, lethal injection): Enraged that his coworker, 24 year old Sheryl Graber, refused him sex and started screaming for help, he stabbed her over 31 times. Long also shot and killed her son, 5 year old Andrew, for being a witness.
11. Stephen Wood (1992-1998, lethal injection): While heavily intoxicated, Wood stabbed two other homeless men, 46 year old Charles Stephen and 34 year old Charles Von Johnson, dozens of times each. He was given a life sentence for both of their murders. During his incarceration, Robert Brigden, a 59 year old former minister that was serving a 40 year sentence for molesting several girls between the ages of 4-14 in his congregation, moved into his unit after refusing to go into protective custody. Woods killed Brigden in a stabbing attack, and his sentence was escalated to death by the courts for it.
12. Tuan Anh Nguyen (~1982-1998, lethal injection): By all accounts, Nguyen was jealously possessive over his wife, 21 year old Donna. During one of their arguments over his behavior, he stabbed Donna, her 6 year old nephew Joseph White, and her 3 year old niece Amanda White, in their home and left the bodies to be found by the children’s parents. He fled to Arizona, groomed a 14 year old girl into an illicit “relationship”, and impregnated her. After he convinced her to move in with him, Nguyen physically and sexually abused the girl until she fled and went to the local police for help. Nguyen was then deported back to Oklahoma to face trial for Donna and the White children’s slayings, and was sentenced to death for them.
13. John Duvall (1986-1998, lethal injection): During a fight with his wife, 30 year old Donna, Duvall stabbed and suffocated her to death with a pillow.
14. John Castro Sr. (1983-1999, lethal injection): Castro carjacked Beulah Cox, a 31 year old Oklahoma State University student, after she picked him up hitchhiking and shot her to death. A few months later, Castro held up a restaurant with an empty pistol, and attacked the manger, 29 year old Rhonda Pappan, after forcing her to open the register. During their struggle, Pappan was fatally stabbed, and he took off with her purse. During his mid teens, Castro was allegedly molested by his mother. Castro's attorneys made the argument that his glimpses of Cox's buttocks reminded him of his mother's reported abuse, and he was triggered into attacking her for it.
15. Sean Sellers (1985-1999, lethal injection): In 1985, a then 15 year old Sellers tried to buy beer from a convenience store, but the clerk, 32 year old Robert Bower, denied him due to being underaged at the time. Sellers gunned him down in a fit of rage. A year later, Sellers shot and killed his mother, 32 year old Vonda Bellofatto, and stepfather, 43 year old Paul, in their sleep. Due to being 16 at the time of his conviction, Sellers remains the youngest condemned offender to have his sentence carried out in the post Furman era. He also attracted national media attention for claiming that his crimes were the result of demonic possession.
16. Scotty Moore (1983-1999, lethal injection): Moore was fired from a motel for undisclosed reasons. In retaliation, Moore and a cousin (whom he was dating at the time), assaulted the motel, and gunned down the desk clerk, 42 year old Alex Fernandez. According to court documents, the pair took a total of $97 in the robbery.
17. Norman Newsted (1984-1999, lethal injection): Newsted tricked Lawrence Buckley, a 26 year old cab driver, into picking him up. He shot Buckley dead and took his wallet. In an attempt to cover his tracks, Newsted placed the body inside the cab, and drove it into a creek near a local church. Despite his best efforts, Buckley’s cab and remains were discovered a day later by the church’s pastor.
18. Cornel Cooks (1982-1999, lethal injection): Cooks and his accomplice broke into the home of 87 year old Jennie Ridling. She was gagged, raped, and suffocated to death with gauze wrappings. According to autopsy reports, the pair abused her for over 2 hours. They then sacked the house for any valuables and left with her checkbook.
19. Bobby Ross (1983-1999, lethal injection): While robbing an inn, Ross fatally shot a police officer, 30 year old Steve Mahan, that tried to intervene.
20. Malcolm Johnson (~1970s(?)-2000, lethal injection): Johnson invaded the apartment of 76 year old Ura Thompson and sexually assaulted her. Thompson either died from having her chest compounded during the abuse or was suffocated by Johnson’s hands covering her nose. He seized several possessions such as furs, typewriters, purse, watch, rings, and a hand mirror, which were discovered by police in his residence during an unrelated investigation of a firearms possession charge. Johnson had an extensive criminal history, which included several convictions of rape, armed robberies, and burglaries. The case attracted controversy when it was discovered that the lead chemist in the investigation misconducted several of her other cases, and forged some of the evidence used in the trial. Despite the other overwhelming evidence to the contrary, Johnson’s supporters took the opportunity to push a narrative of his innocence.
21. Gary Walker (~1960s-2000, lethal injection): Walker abducted, raped, and murdered at least 5 women, 36 year old Margaret Lydick, 35 year old Jane Hilburn, 32 year old Janet Jewell, 25 year old Valerie Shaw-Hartzell, and 24 year old DeRonda Roy, and non fatally assaulted several other women and teenage girls. The victims were mostly strangled to death with their bras and panties. Some of them were forced to withdraw hundreds of dollars from ATMs before they were killed. He also strangled a man, 63 year old Eddie Cash, with an electrical cord while robbing his home. Walker had dozens of previous convictions for burglary, carjacking, drug possession, and carrying concealed weapons. Some of his earliest arrests occurred when he was a teenager.
22. Michael Roberts (~1988-2000, lethal injection): A career burglar, Roberts was condemned for murder of 80 year old Lula Brooks. She was raped and her throat was slit by an intruder in her home. Roberts' death sentence and execution has been contested, as he was convicted on his later recounted testimony alone. He claimed that the investigators tricked him into confessing with the promise of a plea deal that was allegedly withheld from him.
23. Kelly Rogers (1990-2000, lethal injection): Rogers’ girlfriend lured 21 year old Karen Lauffenburger into her apartment with a fake pizza order. They accosted her when she arrived with the delivery. After the couple forced Lauffenburger to hand to over the $40 she earned from the night's pizza deliveries and withdraw $175 from an ATM, Rogers raped and stabbed her to death. The body was left in Lauffenburger’s apartment and was found by her boyfriend.
24. Ronald Boyd (1986-2000, lethal injection): During a robbery spree of several gas stations and supermarkets, Boyd engaged in a shootout with the responding officers. A Master Patrolman, 32 year old Richard Riggs, was killed in the exchange.
25. Charles Foster (~1980s(?)-2000, lethal injection): Foster suspected a grocery store owner, 74 year old Claude Wiley, of making sexual advances at his wife. He arranged for her to entice Wiley to their home with an order. When he arrived with the delivery, Foster stabbed and bludgeoned him to death with a baseball bat. He a history of convictions involving threats and violence, though my sources didn’t disclose any specific details.
26. James Robedeaux (1978-2000, lethal injection): In 1978, Robedeaux strangled his first wife, 30 year old Linda, and plead guilty to a second degree murder charges. He was released after serving 6 out of a 25 year sentence despite an escape attempt. In the following year, he began a relationship with 37 year old Nancy McKinney while he married a different woman. During an argument, Robedeaux beat McKinney to death, dismembered her body with a saw and machete, and scattered the remains across the state. While being investigated for McKinney's murder, he was arrested for choking and beating his estranged second wife. The cases were incidental and kept separate by the courts.
27. Roger Berget (~1985-2000, lethal injection): Berget carjacked and abducted 33 year old Rick Patterson with an accomplice, and shot him dead. He also admitted to the beating death of a roommate, 40 year old James Meadows, on the behalf of the man's wife. As a trivial side note, Berget's brother Rodney was executed in 2018 by the state of South Dakota for killing a prison guard [for more information, please see Rodney Berget's entry under the South Dakota section of my states with less then 10 executions post].
28. William Bryson (1988-2000, lethal injection): To collect a $300,000 life insurance policy, Marilyn Plantz recruited her boyfriend Byrson and his friend to kill her husband, 33 year old James. Byrson and his friend ambushed Plantz in his house as he was coming home from work and beat him to death with a baseball bat. With the intentions of staging an accident, Marilyn ordered the pair to burn the body in the couple's pickup truck.
29. Gregg Braun (1989-2000, lethal injection): Across several states, Braun shot and killed 4 women, 48 year old Geraldine Valdez, 31 year old Gwendolyn Miller, 28 year old Mary Rains, 27 year old Barbara Kochendorfer, and one man, 54 year old Pete Spurrier, while robbing stores.
30. George Wallace (~1970s-2000, lethal injection): Known as "the Mad Paddler" due to his habit of spanking abducted preteen and teenage boys with a wooden paddle, Wallace kidnapped his victims by posing as a police officer. After duping his targets into thinking that they were being arrested, Wallace restrained them with handcuffs and leg chains. The captives were then sexually abused and shot or stabbed to death. His crimes were exposed when an 18 year old man he abducted escaped from him despite being shot and stabbed numerous times. By his own admission, Wallace murdered 18 year old Thomas Reed, 15 year old William Domer, 14 year old Mark McLaughlin, 14 year old Jeffrey Foster, and 12 year old Alonzo Cade.
31. Eddie Trice (1987-2001, lethal injection): Trice snuck into the home of 84 year old Ernestine Jones and raped her. After he beat Jones to death with numbchucks, he terrorized and extorted her cognitively disabled son of $500 with threats of killing him if he told anyone of the murder. The son was also assaulted with a hammer, and he received injuries to his right eye, right cheekbone, and his right forearm.
32. Wanda Allen (~1981-2001, lethal injection): In 1981, Allen got into a fight with her live in girlfriend, 21 year old Dedra Pettus, and shot her dead. Despite giving a bungled story about her being accidentally killed in a shootout with Pettus’ ex boyfriend to the investigators, Allen managed to secure a 4 year sentence for manslaughter after pleading guilty to a plea deal, and was released after serving two years. While incarcerated, she started dating a fellow inmate, 29 year old Gloria Leathers, and continued their relationship outside of prison. The couple’s relationship was marred with extreme domestic violence on Allen’s end. In one incident, Allen struck Leathers with a rake. In 1989, while they were arguing in front of a shopping center, Allen shot and killed Leathers. Leathers herself also had history of violence, and had a conviction for stabbing a woman to death. Allen and her defense team tried to use Leathers’ previous convictions to make a self defense argument, but that was shot down by the courts.
33. Floyd Medlock (1990-2001, lethal injection): 7 year old Katherine Busch went to visit her family's old apartment, which Medlock was residing in, by herself. Busch knocked on the door and Medlock let her inside after she begged for food. He then choked and sexually assaulted the girl, dunked her head in a toilet bowl, and stabbed her to death. The body was hidden in a nearby dumpster. Busch's grandmothers were staunch pro capital punishment and anti death penalty activists respectively, and their public feud over Medlock's sentence and execution attracted some media attention. Medlock also had an extensive criminal history despite being only 19 at the time of Busch's murder, and was previously arrested several times for indecent exposure, arson, armed robbery, and marijuana possession.
34. Dion Smallwood (1992-2001, lethal injection): Smallwood walked into the home of his ex girlfriend's adoptive stepmother, 68 year old Lois Frederick, without invitation. He had a tumultuous and often violent relationship with her adopted stepdaughter that she strongly opposed, and they broke up under her pressure. After an argument, Smallwood knocked Frederick unconscious with a croquet mallet, locked her in a car, and burned her alive in it.
35. Mark Fowler (1985-2001, lethal injection): To get back at his ex employers for firing him, Fowler and his partner, Billy Fox, stormed a supermarket that he used to work out. The pair rounded up 3 employees, Chumpon Chaowasin, a 44 year old Thai immigrant, 33 year old Rick Cast, and 27 year old John Barrier, at gun point. Their hostages were shot, clubbed, and stabbed to death, and they took over $2,7000 in cash and checks.
36. Billy Fox (1985-2001, lethal injection): Fox assisted the above mentioned Mark Fowler in robbing a supermarket and murdering 3 of its employees
37. Loyd Lafevers (1985-2001, lethal injection): Lafevers and his accomplice, Randall Cannon, kidnapped 84 year old Addie Hawley from her home. She was raped, trapped in the trunk of a car, and burned alive in it. Although she was rescued, Hawley died from her injuries 6 hours later. The pair stole Hawley's wedding ring and Lafevers gifted it to a stripper. As Hawley's nephew was a Colorado state senator, her murder gained some attention from media outlets.
38. Dorsie Jones Jr. (1979-2001, lethal injection): While drinking at a bar, a barmaid chastised Jones for carrying an unconcealed gun. He shot at her in a fit of rage, but missed and injured his female companion instead. Jones then turned his attention to the other patrons and fired on them. 48 year old Stanley Buck Sr. was killed in front of his 19 year old son, who was also wounded in the shooting.
39. Robert Clayton (~1980s-2001, lethal injection): Clayton attacked 19 year old Rhonda Timmons while she was sunbathing near her apartment. She was raped, stabbed, kicked in the head, and strangled to death with her swimming suit. Her husband found Timmons' body laying next to their infant daughter, who was left unharmed. Clayton had a previous rape conviction in Tennessee and a robbery conviction in Texas.
40. Ronald Fluke (1997-2001, lethal injection): Out of despair that his gambling addiction drove his family to near poverty, Fluke shot and killed his wife, 44 year old Ginger, and their daughters, 13 year old Kathryn and 11 year old Susanne, while they were sleeping in their bedrooms. He initially attacked Ginger with a hatchet, but turned to shooting when she fought back.
41. Marilyn Plantz (1988-2001, lethal injection): The married girlfriend of William Bryson. As mentioned under Bryson's entry, Plantz arranged for him and his friend to kill her husband James to collect his life insurance policy.
42. Terrance James (1983-2001, lethal injection): While awaiting trial for a theft of government property charge, James and two accomplices strangled a fellow inmate, 25 year old Mark Berry, with wire out of their suspicions of him being a snitch. They then hung the body in an attempt to make it look like a suicide. Berry was another party in the theft of government property case, and James and his accomplices believed that it was his testimony that got them arrested.
43. Vincent Johnson (1991-2001, lethal injection): Johnson gunned down 44 year old Shirley Mooneyham in her home. The prosecution believed that Mooneyham's boyfriend arranged the killing to collect a life insurance policy, but he was acquitted at trial.
44. Jerald Harjo (~1980s-2001, lethal injection): Harjo snuck into the bedroom of 64 year old Ruth Porter, raped her, and suffocated her with a pillowcase. He then snatched Porter's car keys and drove off with her van. His past criminal history was extensive, and was in prison numerous times for burglary and autotheft.
45. Jack Walker (1988-2001, lethal injection): Disgruntled with the custody dispute over their then 3 month old son, Walker stabbed his ex girlfriend, 17 year old Shelly Ellison, and her uncle, 30 year old Donald, 32 and 11 times with an ice pick during a confrontation at their home.
46. Alvie Hale Jr. (1983-2001, lethal injection): Hale kidnapped 24 year old William Perry to extort a $350,000 ransom from his banking family. When the negotiations failed, Perry was shot dead, and Hale buried the body on his father's property.
47. Lois Smith (1982-2001, lethal injection): Smith, her son, and a female accomplice abducted her son's ex girlfriend, 21 year old Cindy Baillee, from an airport out of fear her testifying of his involvement in the drug trade. Baillee was taken to Smith's ex husband's house, and stabbed in the throat by her ex boyfriend while driving to their destination. Inside the home, she was taunted by Smith with a gun, and was shot 7 times in the chest and 2 times in the back of the head. While her son was reloading the gun, Smith jumped on and crushed Bailee's throat.
48. Sahib Lateef Al-Mosawi (1992-2001, lethal injection): Following a dispute over their newborn son's name, Al-Mosawi's estranged wife, 26 year old Inaam Al-Nashi, fled to the apartment of her uncle, 45 year old Mohammed. Al-Mosaw attacked the pair in the apartment and stabbed them to death. Inaam's sister was also stabbed, but she managed to escape with her life. The couple and their families were refugees from Iraq that were displaced by the First Persian Gulf War, and they fled into the United States.
49. John Romano (1985-2002, lethal injection): Romano and his accomplice David Woodruff robbed and murdered two of their acquaintances. One of the victims, 63 year old Lloyd Thompson, was attacked in his apartment. Thompson was held down by the pair while they stabbed him 22 times and served his spinal cord. The other victim, 52 year old Roger Sarfaty, was tied up, beaten, stabbed 5 times, and strangled to death in a jewelry store he owned. In the robberies, Romano and Woodruff stole several pieces of jewelry from Sarfaty, and took most of Thompson’s quarter collection.
50. David Woodruff (1985-2002, lethal injection): As mentioned under John Romano's entry, Woodruff took part in the robbery murders of Lloyd Thompson and Roger Sarfaty.
51. Randall Cannon (1985-2002, lethal injection): Cannon assisted Loyd Lafevers in abducting, sexually assaulting, and burning Addie Hawley alive in her car. Although he was acquitted of molesting Hawley, Cannon was still condemned for his part in the kidnapping and murder.
52. Earl Frederick Sr. (~1989-2002, lethal injection): Frederick beat Bradford Beck, a 41 year old veteran that was crippled during his service in the Vietnam war, to death in his home after befriending him. He ransacked the house and dumped Beck's body in a field. A second murder, the robbery and shooting death of a Texan man, 77 year old Shirley Fox, was also tied to him. However, authorities in Texas withheld from prosecuting Fredrick due to his death penalty trial and conviction in Oklahoma. Both Fox and Beck had physical disabilities, which led prosecutors to the conclusion that Frederick intentionally selected and depredated on disabled men.
53. Jerry McCracken (~1980s(?)-2002, lethal injection): McCracken and his accomplice shot up a bar, killed 3 patrons and the bartender, and made off with $350. The victims that lost their lives were 41 year old Carol McDaniels, 37 year old Timothy Sheets, 34 year old Steven Sheets, and 27 year old Tyrrell Boyd. Months before the mass shooting, McCracken was paroled after serving time for stabbing 3 people in a bar fight.
54. Jay Neill (1984-2002, lethal injection): During a bank robbery, Neill disemboweled and nearly decapitated 3 tellers, 42 year old Kay Bruno, 25 year old Joyce Mullenix, and 19 year old Jerri Bowles. A group of 4 customers, consisting of 33 year old Ralph Zeller, a married couple, and their 14 month old daughter, unwittingly walked in on him, and he herded them into a backroom to be shot. Zeller was killed, the couple were wounded, and Neill left the daughter unharmed due to running out of bullets. Neill's boyfriend was given a life sentence for the robbery and murders, despite not being directly involved.
55. Ernest Carter Jr. (~1989-2002, lethal injection): After being fired from an autoshop, Carter robbed it with an accomplice, and fatally shot a security guard, 35 year old Eugene Manowski. The pair stole the shop's tow truck, and later tried to burn it with Carter's girlfriend to destroy any traces of the crime. Carter was also previously accused of burning a friend to death in the previous year, but the charges were dismissed.
56. Daniel Revilla (1987-2003, lethal injection): While babysitting his girlfriend's son, 13 month old Mark Gomez, in their home, Revilla broke the boy’s ribs in a beating and scalded him with boiling water. When he brought the boy to a hospital, Revilla gave a story that he accidentally hit Gomez’s head with a door handle, which was quickly seen through by the staff. According to the accounts of his girlfriend and her family, Revilla was violently abusive to Gomez, and they recounted incidents of him trapping the boy in a kitchen drawer, dunking him in cold water, folding him into a pull up bed, and hanging him by his ankles with duct tape.
57. Bobby Fields (~1990s-2003, lethal injection): Fields shot and killed 77 year old Louise Schem while burglarizing her home. She had tried to shot him with her .25 calibre pistol, but he wrestled the gun away from her, and gunned her down with it. His intentions was to steal Schem's television set to sell for cocaine, but left empty handed after losing his nerves with the struggle and murder. According to court documents, Fields had a previous robbery and assault conviction, and several arrests for drug possession.
58. Walanzo Robinson (1989-2003, lethal injection): A member of the Gangster Bloods street gang, Robinson shot and killed 26 year old Dennis Hill, an affiliate of a rival gang, in a turf war over drug sales.
59. John Hooker (~1971-2003, lethal injection): As a teenager in 1971, Hooker attended a party at a friend's house, and got into an argument. In a fit of anger, he fatally shot 18 year old Alta Lang, and wounded two other partygoers. Due to the witnesses refusing to cooperate with the investigation and being unable to prove any calculated intentions, Hooker was given a manslaughter conviction, and released a few years later. After he was paroled, Hooker started dating Sylvia Stokes, and fathered several children with her. Their troubled relationship lasted for 8 years, and ended when Stokes filed a protection order against him. In retaliation, Hooker lured Stokes and her mother, 53 year old Durcilla Morgan, into his apartment and stabbed them both to death.
60. Scot Hain (~1980s-2003, lethal injection): Hain carjacked and abducted a couple, 27 year old Michael Houghton and 22 year old Laura Sanders. After taking $565 and some bags of clothing, he forced them into the trunk of their car at gunpoint, and burned them alive in it. He had several previous arrests for robbery, and was involved with a number of rapes and attempted kidnappings months before the Houghton and Sanders' murders.
61. Don Hawkins Jr. (1985-2003, lethal injection): Hawkins kidnapped 29 year old Linda Ann Thompson and her two daughters, aged 4 years old and 18 months old, from a mall. Although his original intentions were to ransom off Thompson and her children, Hawkins gang raped the captive woman with his cousin and his girlfriend's teenage nephew, and drowned her in a lake. Thompson's children were spared and simply left with a babysitter. Hawkins and his accomplice then went on a nation wide rampage with his accomplice that involved the abductions and rapes of several grown women and teenage girls, hanging 31 year old David Coupez of Colorado in his home while robbing him, and countless other robberies.
62. Larry Jackson (~1984-2003, lethal injection): In 1984, Jackson shot and killed his girlfriend, 19 year old Freda Washington. He accepted a plea deal that dumbed down the charges to second degree murder, and was given a 30 year sentence for it. During his incarceration, Jackson started a relationship with 29 year old Wendy Cade. Despite her promises of marriage after his release, Cade left him for another man, and they got engaged. When Jackson was assigned to a prison work crew, he snuck out and went to confront Cade. Reportedly, the two had bought alchool, cocaine, and cigerates together and had sex in Cade's apartment. However, they got into an argument, and he slashed Cade's throat and stabbed her 31 times with box cutters. Jackson then left with her jewelry, watch, and the keys to her jeep.

2024.05.12 19:29 ProudlyWearingThe8 [Frauen] HSV braucht zwei Eigentore

Vorneweg: Ich habe das Spiel selbst nicht gesehen.
Am heutigen Sonntag stand der 24. Spieltag in der 2. Bundesliga an.
Es mussten zwei weitere Punkte her.

HAITI American Airlines, JetBlue Airways once more delay resumption of daily service into Haiti BY JACQUELINE CHARLES
MAY 10, 2024 10:39 AM
American Airlines has not flown into Haiti since March 4, 2024 ,when armed gangs targeted the country’s main airport in Port-au-Prince. Flying in and out of Port-au-Prince on a major U.S. carrier will once more have to wait.
American Airlines and JetBlue Airways are again delaying the resumption of their daily service from the United States into Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Haiti’s gang-ridden capital. Now, one carrier is looking at the end of the month, the other after June. Both return dates would have U.S. flights out of Miami and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood return to the country after the arrival of the first deployment of Kenyan police as part of a multinational force to help Haiti cops battle gangs.
“The safety and security of our customers and crew members is our top priority. As a result of the recent civil unrest in Haiti, we have canceled operations through Tuesday, June 4,” JetBlue spokesman Derek Dombrowski said. “We continue to monitor the situation and are working closely with the U.S. embassy and our team in Haiti to determine next steps.”
U.S. officials involved in the deployment of the multinational security mission have declined to provide a specific date for the police officers’ arrival —or say how large the initial group will be, citing security concerns. Preparations, however, are under way to have the first foreign cops arrive in Port-au-Prince to help Haiti’s security forces.
the arrival of the first contingent of Kenyan police officers — the backbone of the Multinational Security Support mission — is scheduled to coincide with the May 23 state visit to Washington by Kenya President William Ruto and his wife, Rachel Ruto. The couple is being hosted by President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden.
United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres, who is in Nairobi attending the U.N. Civil Society Conference, saluted Kenya’s leadership on Haiti, telling Ruto the help “is so desperately needed.”
“I am particularly grateful to Kenya for agreeing to lead international efforts to quell the violence in Haiti,” he later said at the opening of a press conference.
This week some of the people involved in the deployment, including a security official from Jamaica, which is in charge of the Caribbean contingent, attended discussions in Washington, D.C. about the first phase. Meanwhile, the Doral-based U.S. Southern Command has been coordinating U.S. military flights into Haiti. As many as three flights a day have been arriving in Port-au-Prince with supplies, equipment and civilian personnel to help build a base for the foreign forces.
The Biden administration has pledged $300 million toward the security effort, though officials continue to face money constraints. Republican lawmakers in Congress, who have raised questions about the mission, are blocking $40 million of the $100 million the State Department has pledged. The other $200 million is from the Defense Department and includes in-kind support for the operations.
In an opinion column in the Miami Herald this week,James B. Foley, a former U.S. ambassador to Haiti, sounded the alarm over the blocking of the money, noting that while he respects the right of Congress to demand accountability, “the fact is that situations of this kind are fluid and every detail cannot be spelled out in advance.
“This operation is critical to multiple U.S. national security interests and it needs to get off the ground before it is too late. Moreover, other donors potentially willing to help underwrite the mission are sitting on the fence, waiting to see if the U.S. is serious or not. That is indeed the critical unanswered question, the key to which lies in Republican hands.”
Neither Dombrowski of JetBlue nor American Airlines spokeswoman Laura Masvidal cited the ongoing plans to deploy troops as the reason for their company’s delay in return to Haiti. However, the new schedule for both airlines will have services return after the Kenyan cops arrive.
Masvidal says flights from Miami International Airport into Toussaint Louverture International Airport in Port-au-Prince are now scheduled to start on May 30th. They were previously supposed to start on May 16 after being pushed back from May 9.
Earlier this week, Dania Beach-based Spirit Airlines, which announced a resumption of flights for Friday, May 10, from Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International into Cap-Haïtien, said its Port-au-Prince flights remain suspended until further notice. JetBlue, which connects Port-au-Prince to both John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York and and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood, previously announced It would resume its services on May 15.
“For the latest fee waivers and to check flight status, customers should go to jetblue.com. If customers want to change destinations, they can cancel and use the fare for other flights,” Dombrowski said.
Haiti’s main international airport, domestic airport and government seaport have been shut down for the past two months after armed gangs launched a broad assault against the government and key infrastructure. At least three planes leased by the country’s national carrier, Sunrise Airways, were struck by bullets during one of the attacks, forcing the suspension of in-country flights in and out of Port-au-Prince.
The ongoing closure of the facilities have been costly for Haiti, which has one of the highest government taxes on airline tickets in the region and charges $10 for every passenger without a Haitian passport or proof they were born in the country.
In hopes of resuming flights, the government has demolished hundreds of homes around the airport to remove gangs’ ability to use rooftops to fire at planes.
The govermment has also built several security towers around the airport and continues to have police officers and members of the army patrol both inside and out to prevent any security breaches.

Laura learned she had a soul in a Venom comic!
(From Venom: Circle of Four, 2011. #13, #13.1, 13.2, 13.3, 13.4 & 14)
This is one of the biggest moment sof character growth for Laura, hidden in an obscure Venom crossover!
Ghost Rider, Venom, Red Hulk, and X-23 get pulled into hell for... reasons... and team up.
The comic is not that notable, except that the writer made a real effort to understand who Laura Kinney was, where she was at in her journey, and then he carefully considered what he could do with his story to help her make progress as a person.
The result: this is where Laura comes to understand she has a soul and is a whole and complete person instead of just a killing machine.
It's a huge moment for her. It's just kind of weird it happened in this obscure crossover.

2024.05.06 03:10 Low_Town4480 There’s a new step in the homebuying process, and it won’t be free

By Dennis Rodkin, Crain’s Chicago Business
May 03, 2024 03:34 PM
The lead-up to buying a house is going to start differently, with house hunters and brokers sitting down together to talk about money before they go look at homes, the National Association of Realtors announced Friday.
The change, which all brokers must implement by Aug. 17, will clarify that “nobody works for free,” said Mike Golden, co-CEO of @properties Christie’s International Real Estate, the biggest real estate brokerage based in Chicago.
In the past, before a recent court decision spurred changes in the industry, a broker could easily give a potential buyer the impression that “you’re not paying me, so let’s go start looking at houses for you,” Golden said. That was because the brokers for both seller and buyer were compensated by the sellers out of their proceeds from the sale.
The change, Golden said, means brokers “will tell you clearly, ‘these are the services I’ll provide while we’re looking for your house. I’ll be investing my time in you, and (in the end) I’ll be compensated, like anyone else who works for you.’”
It’s one plank in a platform of changes the trade group announced Friday as it moves away from the old practice of encouraging brokers for the buyer and seller to split commissions paid by the seller. Precipitated by a $1.7 billion verdict last October in a federal case where a jury found that the practice amounted to industry collusion that kept commissions high, NAR announced in March that it would abandon the practice and formulate new standards for compensating buyers’ brokers.
On Friday, NAR’s chief legal officer, Katie Johnson, issued an email laying out nine changes that will take effect Aug. 17. Most of them are “backstage” changes that primarily impact brokers and multiple-listing services.
But among them is one that codifies what many people in the industry say is a substantive change in the way homebuyers go through the process. It requires agents “working with a buyer to enter into a written agreement with a buyer prior to touring a property,” Johnson’s email to the media said.
Along with clarifying that brokerage isn’t a free service to buyers, the change further “professionalizes our industry,” Golden said. Brokers representing sellers are schooled in explaining their value by showing the potential client all their marketing tools, such as agents-only apps, staging services and individual property websites.
But the buyer broker “didn’t have to tell you much,” Golden said. “That’s going to change.”
Some buyers are sure to be intimidated by the change, said Laura Ellis, president of residential sales at Chicago-based Baird & Warner. Shortly after the October court decision, she predicted buyer-broker agreements would become the new standard.
Ellis envisions buyers sitting across the table from a broker thinking, “wait a minute, I’ve been scraping to save up the 10%, 20% down payment, and now you’re telling me I have to pay you 2.5%, 3% on top of that?”
Ellis said professionalism and a clear approach will overcome that resistance. “All the surveys we’ve seen say buyers aren’t against the broker getting paid,” she said, “They just want to know what they’re paying for.”
To be clear: A buyer-broker agreement isn’t new. It’s already required in 19 of 50 states, Ellis said. What’s new is the industry-wide requirement that all buyers sign an agreement with a broker up front.
Jeff Kropp, broker-owner of the North Side firm Home Buyer Agents of Chicagoland, has been asking clients to sign a buyer agreement for 23 years. “It’s a highly effective, transparent way to be very clear about how I get paid and what value I provide my clients,” he said.
It’s also been a good way to detect buyers who “aren’t serious about working with one agent,” Kropp said. “They’re going to go see some properties with you, then go see some with another agent,” in essence gobbling up free samples.
Requiring a buyer-broker agreement, Kropp said, is long overdue. “It always struck me as odd that you’re entering into this relationship where you’re going to make probably the biggest investment of your life,” he said, but you have no written agreement.”
Particularly in the beginning, when the forms are relatively new, some buyers might be turned off, said Ed Lukasik Jr., the broker owner of Re/Max Professionals in Bolingbrook. They’ll likely be the same people who under the old system believed “they didn’t need representation,” he said. “They’ll call the listing agent directly to see the house,” only to learn later of the many complexities a buyer’s broker is skilled at handling. They include radon and other disclosures and comprehension of the intricacies of a bidding in a multi-offer situation.
Lukasik avoided saying those people will come running back to a buyer broker, but said “they have to be very confident about representing themselves.”
Ellis said the people who might be most intimidated by the new rule aren’t buyers but real estate agents.
“It’s unnerving for an agent to have to look the buyer in the eye and say, ‘You’re going to pay me 3%’ when they’ve never had to do that before,” she said. “Some won’t be able to do it. Just won’t be able to do it.” Ellis expects to see some agents who’ve worked exclusively on the buyer side to leave the business as a result.
“The more proficient, confident professional agents will get more business,” Ellis said, “because they know their value and they know how to explain it.”

2024.05.05 20:46 Daemius912 Named Zombies base game 145/146 no bugged Butcho or Amanda

I started a fresh character intending to use the Masochist card the entire game. While doing this I've also been cataloging every single Named Zombie I've come across to make sure I get them all. I've been staying out of SoLa on purpose with this character to make sure those named zombies don't mess with my count. I did complete the Haus story line and have accounted for the 3 named zombies you encounter just doing the Haus story. That leaves me currently after completing all sidequests, the story, and doing all the lockboxes, at 145/146 zombies for base game.
I made sure to check that both Amanda Styles and Butcho counted towards my count and they did when I killed them. The only anomaly I've found is you get credit for a named zombie immediately upon entering the Brentwood Sewers during the It's Not Your Fault quest. When you later kill the Seismologist named zombie, you don't get credit for it. I have cataloged this happening 3 times and recorded it once. I can only assume this unaccounted for zombie when you enter the sewer is the game erroneously giving you credit ahead of time however I can't be sure until I've figured out who this 146th zombie is. Otherwise I have to assume the seismologist is bugged and the named zombie count is incorrectly inflated by 1.
Here's the entire list of zombies I've killed this playthrough.

2024.04.29 12:25 Chai_Ky The Case of Kate Blackwell: The Guest Book

10/18/2017 9:00 am
Log book of Det. Ryan Snow Case #2798: the Appalachian Murders Description of enclosed evidence: One bloody, torn up, blue and green guest book retrieved from suspect.
I have read through the guest book entries during the time Kate Blackwell (only survivor and possible suspect of the Appalachian Murders during the week of 09/20/2017-09/26/2017) and her friends were staying in one of the three cabins owned by Cloud Nine Vacation Rentals in the Appalachian Mountains. It appears the group wrote in it each day leading up to the murders, recording everything happening within the cabin.
The first entry was written by Blackwell, stating that the cabin was beautiful and that she was looking forward to the rest of the week. The next entry was written by Paul Woolfe asking about the attic, stating that the group was hearing sounds, but the door was locked. They pass it off as an animal having getting itself stuck up there, but that the girls would be asking the land lord, a Mrs. Alba Larson, for a key to get it out. Note: Mrs. Larson had indeed owned the three cabins in those mountains, but had passed away in 2005 and the property was bought by Cloud Nine Vacation Rentals not long after when no next of kin was found.
The entries that followed are when my concerns for the well being of not just Ms. Blackwell, but the rest of the group as well began. It was written on the same day as when Ms. Blackwell and Sonja Greymoore said they'd be going to speak to Mrs. Larson about the attic. I will be attaching the more concerning entries to this log, only giving my commentary during points of no consequence to the murders. I will also be attaching the earlier entries from before Blackwell's arrival to see if I can find any similarities between each guests' stay. As far as I know, there have been several missing persons cases concerning that area, however, it is common for people to go missing in the Appalachian Mountains on a daily basis, most of which go cold. One of the only known murders to occur in either of the three cabins happened in 2010. The suspect, a Mr. Leighton Raines, pleaded guilty to the death of his fiancé, Mrs. Bonnie "Bunny" Collins and was given life in prison with no chance of parole. Mrs. Collins was found with her torso cut open and her heart missing. Mr. Raines was in the corner of the room they were found in covered in Mrs. Collins' blood. The couple wrote in the guest book as well. All others before and after were never found or heard from again, but again, those cases went cold and it was speculated that their fates were left to the mountains.
However, I'd be lying if I said most of these entries were not the least bit concerning.
Guest book entries from Cabin #2 of Cloud Nine Vacation Rentals in the Appalachian Mountains concerning the murders that took place during the dates between 09/20/2017-09/26/2017
Entry #3 09/21/2017- This was recorded the second day of the groups' time in the cabin. The group was hearing sounds in the attic that was locked, group believed it was an animal, so Ms. Blackwell and Ms. Greymoore went to ask the land lord for a way to the attic. This entry is believed to have been written by Ms. Greymoore.
The land lady wasn't in her house. We tried to look in through the window to see if she was in there, but the place looked empty. Kate tried to call her, but she's not answering. We're going to try finding out who this lady is and really give her a piece of our mind! The boys are saying that they're going to try breaking in to the attic and get whatever is up there out. Kate and Jasper are worried about getting in trouble, but I'm not going to sleep with all that noise over my head!
Entry #4 09/21/2017- After some analysis of the handwriting, it's believed this was written by Jasper Steele.
We apologize for the attic door. We were able to get it open and we thankfully didn't find an animal, but that noise is still concerning us. It stopped and we didn't find anything up there, but we're a little freaked out. Is this some kind of prank?
Entry #5 09/21/2017- Written by Ms. Blackwell
There's was a fucking Ouija Board up in the attic! Hell to the fuck no! First the noises the origins of which we no not, now there's a Oujia Board! Where's that land lady?
Note: During my first successful interrogation of Ms. Blackwell, she told me about the night they played with the Ouija board and that they stopped playing when it answered a question she asked correctly. Ms. Blackwell was not directly playing the game and she asked a question about what she was thinking about in that moment they were playing. It was after this night she states things got worse. Based on the entries here on, I believe her friends would share this sentiment.
Entry #6 09/22/2017- Handwriting analysis points to this entry was written by Paul Woolfe.
We still can't reach the land lord. She's still no where to be found at her house. We tried patching the attic door up as best we could, but the lock is still broken. We put the Ouija board away because it was scaring Kate, but we didn't put it back in the attic. Luke wants to play it again when things settle back down, but there's still noises coming from in the house. We're looking around for what's making these sounds, but we can't find where they'd be coming from. I'm just gonna say this place is way old and not caught up on any safety regulations.
Note: To save time, the next entries to follow for the next two days are about the group complaining about the faulty wiring and possible tilt of the cabin due to lights turning on and off depending on how they were left before a person left a room or an item being placed somewhere they didn't leave it. Ms. Blackwell told me of all this as well. The entry I'm attaching after this is presumably when Ms. Blackwell told me about Ms. Greymoore wanting to leave because of her boyfriend, Luke Billings, being caught cheating on her with multiple girls. I will be doing a search on each of these girls during the time of this investigation to see what they knew of Luke and his relationship to each of these victims and Ms. Blackwell.
Entry #10 09/24/2017- Written by Ms. Greymoore
I hated it here. I hope this old bitch loses money and goes bankrupt. The fucking sounds, the God damn voices, and now Luke wants to get violent! I'm never coming back to this place ever again! Everyone here can bite me!
Entry #11 09/24/2017- Written by Ms. Blackwell. During interrogation, she stated that it was midnight when this event took place, hence the sudden date change.
She was out there. The land lord. She was outside, just standing there like she was waiting for Sonja and I to get to my car. Paul and Luke went to talk to her, but she ended up stabbing Paul. Luke says she slashed our tires. She's still just standing there. We can't call anyone because there's no service now. We stopped Paul's bleeding as best we could and are trying to get him to rest. We're going to take shifts watching the land lord. If she tries anything, we agreed to wake the rest up and try ambushing her. I'm so sorry... I just wanted to go on vacation with my friends one more time...
Entry #12 09/24/2017- The next entries will be of the group going on shifts, recording each hour the supposed Mrs. Larson just stands outside the cabin. The first is recorded by Jasper Steele.
1:00 am. No movement detected.
Entry #13 09/24/2017- Written by Mr. Billings
2:00 am. No movement detected.
Entry #14 09/24/2017- Written by Ms. Greymoore
3:00 am. Land lord looks at the knife before looking back to cabin. No movement from here on.
Entry #15 09/24/2017- Written by Ms. Blackwell
4:00 am. No movement, but I hear the voices. They keep telling me to go outside. I won't do it. I don't want to. Not with her out there. Why is this happening?
Entry #16 09/24/2017- Written by Mr. Steele
5:00 am. She looks at knife before back to cabin. The voices we keep hearing are telling me to blame Kate for bringing us here. I don't.
Entry #17 09/24/2017- Written by Mr. Billings
6:00 am. Sun starts coming up. Land lord looks at it and shuffles off into the woods. No idea where she went. Paul's wound is bleeding through the rags we used to stop the bleeding, but he's breathing and is staying aware. Sonja hasn't spoken to me. She's sleeping as far from me as possible near Kate. I didn't mean to... Hit Kate or Sonja for that matter... I just... These voices... They won't shut up... I know how Sonja felt about Kate, but... She was with me... I just thought... I... I thought I could get back at her for cheating on me, but it all just spiraled... I'm sorry... I'm sorry... I'm sorry...
Entry #18 09/24/2017- Written by Mr. Woolfe
The land lord slashed all of our tires, even the spares. We're going to the trails to get to high ground to try get cell service. If we don't get back home when we told our families we would, we're either lost somewhere on the Appalachian Mountains or that land lord did something to us. Please let us find a way out of this.
Note: There is one more entry written in the guest book. However, it appears to have been written by Ms. Blackwell after the murders took place. She told me that it was when the group returned to the cabin and found the Ouija board on the coffee table that that's when things got blurry for her. I will try to get her to give me a more detailed explanation of that night. If I can get her lawyer, Mrs. Mayfield, away from her long enough that is.
Mr. Steele had been found in the attic, the door shut and locked. It looked like he'd been attacked by some kind of animal; torn and his limbs scattered about the attic. Mr. Billings was found in the living room next to the coffee table where the Ouija board was with a head wound. Hikers found Mr. Woolfe dead from possible blood loss and his body picked off by wild life, his mother identified him by the tattoo of a sword on his arm. And Ms. Greymoore was found in a shallow grave with a piece of paper in her hands near a cave, the grave marked by a stone with a bloody hand print which was found to be Ms. Blackwell's. The back of Ms. Greymoore's head was found caved in and her spine broken. It's assumed she fell and died shortly after. It's believed Ms. Blackwell buried her with the note before making her to the road where she was found. The paper she used came from the guest book.
The note read: Sonja Greymoore, 18. My family lives in Fayetteville, North Carolina. My dad is Owen Greymoore, he works at Kelly's Tires and Tune Ups. There's four others. One is somewhere out here in the woods, two are in Cabin #2 on 3000 Fairy Wood Lane, and the last one is either wandering somewhere around these mountains, dead, or was found by police. Please get us home.
Ms. Blackwell had been picked up by the teens the day before her friends were found. There were no other people, living or dead, found in those mountains. This thing Ms. Blackwell says is to blame for her friends' death is still unknown. I will need to do even more digging as it seems, based on the other entries before this case, there is a pattern to these cabins. I will contact Cloud Nine Rentals once I understand more of these cabins' histories.
The last entry made by Ms. Blackwell in the guest books reads:
09/30/2017... I think...
If anyone finds this, my name is Kate Blackwell. I invited my friends on vacation before we went our seperate ways to college. There names were Sonja Greymoore, Jasper Steele, Paul Woolfe, and Luke Billings. I buried Sonja near a rock with my hand print on it. Paul is somewhere near one of the trails. Luke and Jasper are in Cabin #2 on 3000 Fairy Wood Lane. I'm not entirely sure who killed them all, but I was the one who brought them here... It was all my fault... I should have just let them go... Being alone would have been worth it if it meant they'd still be around... I should have trusted we'd stay in touch... It's all my fault... I'm sorry... I'm so, so sorry... If I die out here, I deserve it... If anyone finds me... I'm sorry to everyone's families... It was my fault and I wish I could take it back... I want to take it all back... I'm sorry... I'm sorry I'm sorry I'm sorry
Note: The phrase "I'm sorry" continues on until Ms. Blackwell runs out of ink.
The next attachments are the more concerning entries from the guest book before Ms. Blackwell's arrival.

Log book of Det. Ryan Snow Case #2798: the Appalachian Murders Description of enclosed evidence: One bloody, torn up, blue and green guest book retrieved from suspect.
I don't know what the hell just happened. I had received a call from an unknown number on my work land line. The reception was awful, but I could make out that it was male, possibly of an older age. He sounded upset, asking for a female and begging I "bring her back." The way he spoke didn't sound demanding. He sounded upset. Like a child who had their toy taken away and they were pleading to get it back. I assumed he was talking about Ms. Blackwell, but I never got any real helpful information from him.
Front desk had received the call first, the operator saying he sounded normal when she picked up. He had asked to speak to me, but refused to give a name, telling the operator the call was classified and that it was information meant only for me. He wasn't on the line long enough for the station to track where he was calling from.
However, all of that wasn't what was bothering me about this whole interaction. He had called me "Lucky Dime." Only one person ever called me that and there's no way anyone would know that except my parents and I rarely speak to them. Whoever this was, knew more than even my closest friends and I don't have any of those.
To hell with Mrs. Mayfield, I need to speak to Ms. Blackwell. Now.

2024.04.29 03:16 Beanie_Inki 𝚆+ 538 Sweep Guide

  1. We'll have to take any chance we can to emphasize our differences with the toxic Congress of the 90's that Lott embodied. We were elected as moderate problem solvers that could break through the Washington gridlock and dog gonnit we'll show the country we're just that.
  2. The circumstances demand that I find common ground with these people. Get Danny Boy Dan Bartlett - White House Communications Director to draw up a speech about how we want to be a uniter and end Washington gridlock. Even if that means compromising on some things, I gotta get the country moving.
  3. Laura and I have been dismayed by this whole thing. I know Denny wants all the facts to come out and he wants to make sure these children up there on Capitol Hill are protected, but we time to do that. We need time for an investigation. I'm confident the Minority Leader will provide what leadership he can to law enforcement here.
  4. You bet I’m gonna go out there and pull every relationship I have to get this thing passed. I’ll be talking the ears off of Blue Dogs about bipartisanship and how they need to work with me if they want to keep their seats. This can really be a thing where we make the pie higher, get a win that benefits everyone.
  5. Do we want to spend the next year being forced chasing our tail? Tell Rummy to work with the Democrats to find some projects that didn’t keep all their reciepts in order. None of our people need to suffer if we just cooperate. This isn’t hard.
  6. There's disagreement among the rank and file, but I know that House leaders are with me in thinking this thing is infanticide, plain and simple. Let's get a strategy meeting with our folks on the Hill and see if we can't whip this bill below a two-thirds majority.
  7. You bet I’m gonna. Fixing Social Security is part of my mandate. It’s why I got elected. If Dems don’t wanna get on board with free-market reform before the train leaves the station, then I guess they’ll have to catch the next one. That’s what I’m saying. Anyways.
  8. The solution’s obvious. Take the fight to the Taliban. Smoke ’em out. They can’t run and they can’t hide. I don’t care about the UN, I want this done.
  9. People know my position. I believe that marriage is a sacred bond that only exists between one man and one woman and that same-sex relations are sinful by nature. Still, we live in a constitutional system. We gotta accommodate the Court and accept their rulings. I promise American families to be their advocate even as I uphold the law.
  10. This stuff is crazy, but we need more before we go public. I wanna go back to the CIA, the DIA, whomever, and nudge them for something firmer. Instead of a few pipes and trailers, can we encourage them to find some uranium? Maybe anthrax? Something we can use to spook Congress later.
  11. Arnie’s a lot like me in that he’s the kind of guy you wanna have a beer with. Let’s not complicate this too much with poll-tested bullshit. Just invite him to DC and let the press see us having a good time.
  12. We’re making good progress but let’s not forget how quick the Dems in Congress tried to sideline us. We need to spend these weeks massaging egos, repeating things over and over and over again to people on the Hill to kind of catapult the propaganda.
  13. Nothing in this report refutiates what we’ve been saying all along. No official did anything to bail out Enron. I’m grateful to Baucus for producing a report that shows we acted appropriately and responsibly.
  14. I got no time for second thoughts. Push the bill. Ride or die.
  15. I’ve worked with Vice President Cheney for almost four years now and have counted on his calm and steady judgment in difficult days. I am honored to have him at my side and look forward to having him with me as we mount a global war on those who would seek to threaten our freedom. Together, Dick and I will continue fighting for you and your families.
  16. Dealing with Congress is a matter of give and take. Give them a little cooperation and they’ll let us help define the narrative. No need to blow this outta proposition.
  17. Politics is, well, it’s local. That’s what they say, and we could get some backlash if we try and run this nation-wide. We should work with our guys to try and turn the issue statewide, whip up local support for some state referendums like the one in Michigan.
  18. This isn't just about being racist. This is about honesty. I'm working hard every day to make the people work for the government. Byrd has only ever cared about buying votes with earmarks. He's Democrat government at its worst.
  19. Powell knows his stuff, from the Ayatollahs to Zimbabwe and everything in between. I wanted him on stage to talk about how we’re no longer apologizing for being American. The Bush foreign policy is about strength and conviction.
  20. He's attacking us? On this? Well, I'm sure Byrd learned a lot about being secrecy when he was scurrying around with his Klan buddies. Hit him on how he tried to hide his connections anytime he brings this up.
  21. Hell, we got the momentum. We got the energy. Why don't we go for broke here and make the bill even bigger? Work with Wayne's people to add some language that'll punish Democrat-run states if they try to restrict our Second Amendment rights. Take away their transportation bucks or something. The base'll love that.
  22. It was so early that most folks forgot about it, but my consequences on education can’t be beat. No Child Left Behind was groundbreaking, bipartisan, and conflated the bigotry of soft expectations.
  23. It's all about defense. Security. How about that… some of that action-hero, Terminator tough stuff? Get us in good with the macho man image, you know?
  24. Are we still pretending this is a real campaign? Look, this is a joke. The old man's gonna lose. I'd be better off just doing my job instead of playing into this charade.
  25. This is too damn easy. Go after the minority voters. I'm a strong, unifying leader moving this country forward. Byrd's a bitter old racist who hates you. You can't stick with him just because he's a Democrat.
  26. They're calling India the "world's biggest democracy." I don't think that's quite right—America's bigger—but with the world changing it's essential we build ties with these folks. How can we get Singh on our side?
  27. This is dangerous. He's going around saying who knows what and riling everyone up. It's not good for the country. We can't have a nut like him running things. It'd be a disgrace for our nation.
  28. This isn’t all about oil, it’s about nuclear weapons in the hands of dictators. If you look at a picture from the sky of the Korean Peninsula at night, South Korea is filled with lights and energy and vitality and a booming economy; North Korea is dark. Kim needs to go. Tell the South we’re goin’ in.

Directors at the Box Office: John Carpenter

Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's John Carpenter's turn.
Carpenter grew up affected and bothered by the highly religious Bible culture of the deep south, and found cinema as an escape from the racism and politics around him. He began making short horror films with an 8mm camera when his father gifted him a camera and a projector before he had even started high school. He enrolled in USC School of Cinematic Arts, but would drop out during the last semester to make his first film.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

It should be noted that as he started his career in the 1970s, some of the domestic grosses here will be adjusted by inflation. The table with his highest grossing films, however, will be left in its unadjusted form, as the worldwide grosses are more difficult to adjust.

Dark Star (1974)

"The spaced out odyssey."
His directorial debut. It stars Dan O'Bannon, Brian Narelle, Cal Kuniholm and Dre Pahich, and follows the crew of the deteriorating starship Dark Star, twenty years into their mission to destroy unstable planets that might threaten future colonization of other planets.
Carpenter and O'Bannon started writing a script for USC. The film began as a 45-minute 16mm student project with a final budget of $6,000. To achieve feature film length, an additional 50 minutes were shot in 1973, with the support of Canadian distributor Jack Murphy (credited as "Production Associate"). O'Bannon's friend, John Landis, got them in contact with producer-distributor Jack H. Harris for distribution. However, Harris demanded 30 minutes of cuts. This is something that O'Bannon and Carpenter disliked, as "We had what would have been the world's most impressive student film and it became the world's least impressive professional film."
The film had a very limited theatrical run, and there are no box office numbers available. Carpenter and O'Bannon were unhappy that there were empty screenings and the audience not laughing with the jokes. But it found a cult following after they got famous for their later works. At the very least, their careers were starting.

Assault on Precinct 13 (1976)

"A white-hot night of hate!"
His second film. It stars Austin Stoker, Darwin Joston, Laurie Zimmer, Tony Burton, Martin West, and Nancy Kyes. It follows a police officer who defends a defunct precinct against a relentless criminal gang, with the help of a death row-bound convict.
Carpenter had hoped to make a Howard Hawks-style Western like El Dorado or Rio Lobo, but when the $100,000 budget prohibited it, Carpenter refashioned the basic scenario of Rio Bravo into a modern setting. He wrote the script in just 8 days, and it included many references to Hawks' works. He filmed the movie in just 20 days, and he referred to this film as the most fun he has ever had directing.
There are no box office numbers available, although it was reported that it had poor sales. While it received initial mixed reviews, its reputation grew and it would become one of his best films. But he needed a hit if he wanted to continue in the business.

Halloween (1978)

"The night he came home!"
His third film. It stars Donald Pleasence, Jamie Lee Curtis, P. J. Soles and Nancy Loomis. The plot centers on a mental patient, Michael Myers, who was committed to a sanitarium for murdering his teenage sister on Halloween night when he was a child. Fifteen years later, having escaped and returned to his hometown, he stalks teenage babysitter Laurie Strode and her friends while under pursuit by his psychiatrist Dr. Samuel Loomis.
After watching Assault on Precinct 13 at the Milan Film Festival, independent film producer Irwin Yablans and financier Moustapha Akkad sought out Carpenter to direct a film for them about a psychotic killer that stalked babysitters. He agreed on the $10,000 salary under the condition that he would write, direct and compose with complete creative freedom and asked his then-girlfriend Debra Hill to co-write it with him. They wrote it in just 10 days, with Hill writing most of the dialogue for the female characters.
The low budget meant that no big stars would appear in the film. Carpenter wanted Peter Cushing to play Dr. Loomis, but his agent refused with the low salary. Christopher Lee would turn down the role, although he would later deem this as the biggest mistake of his career. Yablans then suggested Pleasence. For Laurie, Carpenter wanted Anne Lockhart, but she was busy. He decided to get Curtis, feeling that publicity would sell itself by casting the daughter of Janet Leigh from Psycho.
The film enjoyed a huge success in theaters. It quickly became a word-of-mouth sensation, and earned $70 million worldwide, becoming one of the most profitable horror films ever. It received acclaim, and has been named as a huge influence on the slasher genre. It would spawn a franchise, although Carpenter would not direct another installment ever again.
  • Budget: $300,000.
  • Domestic gross: $47,274,000. ($226.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $70,274,000.

The Fog (1980)

"Bolt your doors. Lock your windows. There's something in the fog!"
His fourth film. It stars Adrienne Barbeau, Jamie Lee Curtis, Tom Atkins, Janet Leigh and Hal Holbrook. It tells the story of a strange, glowing fog that sweeps over a small coastal town in Northern California, bringing with it the vengeful ghosts of leprous mariners who were killed in a shipwreck there a century before.
While visiting England, Carpenter and Debra Hill witnessed an eerie fog rolling over the landscape from a distance. Carpenter decided to tie the fog to a an actual event, the wrecking of the Frolic, that took place in the 19th century near Goleta, California. However, Carpenter hated the film after watching a rough cut, and realized that he needed to reshoot more scenes in order to compete with the increasing horror market. Around one-third of the film was filmed during reshoots.
Thanks to its low budget, it was a great box office success, making $21.4 million domestically. While initial reactions were divided, its reputation grew with time.
  • Budget: $1,100,000.
  • Domestic gross: $21,448,782. ($81.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $21,448,782.

Escape from New York (1981)

"1997. New York City is now a maximum security prison. Breaking out is impossible. Breaking in is insane."
His fifth film. It stars Kurt Russell, Lee Van Cleef, Ernest Borgnine, Donald Pleasence, Isaac Hayes, Adrienne Barbeau and Harry Dean Stanton. Set in the near-future world of 1997, it follows a crime-ridden United States, which has converted Manhattan Island in New York City into the country's sole maximum security prison. Air Force One is hijacked by anti-government insurgents who deliberately crash it into the walled borough. Ex-Special Forces and current federal prisoner Snake Plissken is given just 24 hours to go in and rescue the President of the United States, after which, if successful, he will be pardoned.
Carpenter started writing the script after the Watergate scandal, inspired by Death Wish. No studio wanted to finance it, but the success of his previous films allowed him to finally make the project happen. The studio wanted a big star, but Carpenter was interested in Kurt Russell. Russell wanted the role to help him avoid being typecast for Disney comedies. Carpenter struggled to film New York within the film's $6 million budget, although he still had cooperation from the city in shutting down 10 blocks. Certain matte paintings were rendered by James Cameron, who was at the time a special-effects artist, and who also served as the director of photography at some points.
Carpenter enjoyed another box office success, as the film made $25 million domestically. It also received critical acclaim, and helped elevate Russell's career.
  • Budget: $6,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $25,244,626. ($86.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $25,244,626.

The Thing (1982)

"Man is the warmest place to hide."
His sixth film. Based on the novella Who Goes There? by John W. Campbell Jr., it stars Kurt Russell, A. Wilford Brimley, T. K. Carter, David Clennon, Keith David, Richard Dysart, Charles Hallahan, Peter Maloney, Richard Masur, Donald Moffat, Joel Polis, and Thomas G. Waites. It tells the story of a group of American researchers in Antarctica who encounter the eponymous "Thing", an extraterrestrial life-form that assimilates, then imitates, other organisms. The group is overcome by paranoia and conflict as they learn that they can no longer trust each other and that any of them could be the Thing.
Producers David Foster Lawrence Turman approached Universal over adapting Campbell's novella. While there was an adaptation in 1951, they wanted something that would be more faithful to the source material. While the producers wanted Carpenter in 1976, Universal preferred the veteran Tobe Hooper instead. After Hooper failed to impress, and after the box office success of Halloween, Universal decided to hire Carpenter. This made The Thing his first film made under a big studio.
After Carpenter disliked the script drafts, he got Bill Lancaster to write the film. While he struggled in adapting the film, he made some changes. These included reducing the 37 characters to just 12, and choosing to open the film in the middle of the action, instead of using a flashback as in the novella. Lancaster aimed to create an ensemble piece where one person emerged as the hero, instead of having a Doc Savage-type hero from the start. Lancaster's original ending had both MacReady and Childs turn into the Thing. In the spring, the characters are rescued by helicopter, greeting their saviors with "Hey, which way to a hot meal?". Carpenter thought this ending was too shallow. He opted to end the film with the survivors slowly freezing to death to save humanity from infection, believing this to be the ultimate heroic act.
While the film was in pre-production, there was still no design on the effects needed for the Thing. Rob Bottin was assigned for the job, and he deduced that the creature had been all over the galaxy. This allowed it to call on different attributes as necessary, such as stomachs that transform into giant mouths and spider legs sprouting from heads. It required so much cooperation from the crew; it took 50 crew members to operate the Blair-Thing puppet. The team wanted the film shot in black-and-white, but Universal refused as they didn't want to risk losing television rights.
While Carpenter composed the scores for his films, he decided that the film needed an European musical approach. So he flew to Rome to speak with Ennio Morricone to convince him to take the job. By the time Morricone flew to Los Angeles to record the score, he had already developed a tape filled with an array of synthesizer music because he was unsure what type of score Carpenter wanted. Morricone wrote complete separate orchestral and synthesizer scores and a combined score, which he knew was Carpenter's preference. Carpenter picked a piece, closely resembling his own scores, that became the main theme used throughout the film.
1982 was a very tough time for horror, as Universal discovered that the audience's appeal for the genre declined by over 70%. But Universal was still having hope on the film, especially as they had a few successful test screenings. On top of that, the only competition was the still unrelease E.T., the Extra-Terrestrial, and they expected that film to appeal solely to kids. However, after one market research screening, Carpenter queried the audience on their thoughts, and one audience member asked, "Well what happened in the very end? Which one was the Thing...?" When Carpenter responded that it was up to their imagination, the audience member responded, "Oh, God. I hate that." After returning from a screening of E.T., the audience's silence at a trailer of The Thing caused Foster to remark, "We're dead."
And Foster's fears were right.
The film disappointed in its opening weekend with just $3.1 million, ranking #8 and behind the fourth weekend of Poltergeist. With a huge amount of competition that summer, it didn't have staying power at the box office, finishing with just $19 million domestically, marking a box office failure. But the bad news didn't stay there. Not only very few people watched it, but nearly everyone who watched it hated it. The film received insanely negative reviews on its release, and hostility for its cynical, anti-authoritarian tone and graphic special effects. Carpenter also saw repercussions to his career. He was attached to direct an adaptation of Stephen King's Firestarter, but Universal fired him after the poor reception of The Thing. His previous success had gained him a multiple-film contract at Universal, but the studio opted to buy him out of it instead. He also said that while he continued making films, he lost confidence.
As years passed, however, the film underwent through a re-appraisal. Once derided, the film found a second life as a huge milestone in the horror genre. It's now hailed as one of the greatest horror films ever made, as well as one of the most influential. Carpenter deemed it as his favorite film, although he lamented that it took years for the film to get the attention it deserved. He noted that his career would've been very different if the film was a success at first, although he also states he does not regret anything he made.
  • Budget: $15,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $19,857,465. ($64.2 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $19,857,465.

Christine (1983)

"How do you kill something that can't possibly be alive?"
His seventh film. Based on the novel by Stephen King, it stars Keith Gordon, John Stockwell, Alexandra Paul, Robert Prosky and Harry Dean Stanton. It follows the changes in the lives of Arnie Cunningham, his friends, his family, and his teenage enemies after he buys a classic red and white 1958 Plymouth Fury named Christine, a car that seems to have a mind of its own and a jealous, possessive personality, which has a bad influence on Arnie.
Carpenter was the first choice to direct the project, although he was working on two projects first. When those projects stalled, he agreed to direct. He said this was not a film he had planned on directing, saying that he directed the film as "a job" as opposed to a "personal project." This was because, after The Thing flopped, he needed something to maintain his career in Hollywood.
The film earned $21 million domestically, which was barely enough for the film to break even. It received a favorable response, although it didn't get the acclaim like his previous works.
  • Budget: $10,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $21,017,849. ($65.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $21,017,849.

Starman (1984)

"He has traveled from a galaxy far beyond our own. He is 100,000 years ahead of us. He has powers we cannot comprehend. And he is about to face the one force in the universe he has yet to conquer. Love."
His eighth film. It stars Jeff Bridges, Karen Allen, Charles Martin Smith, and Richard Jaeckel. It tells the story of a non-corporeal alien who has come to Earth and cloned a human body in response to the invitation found on the gold phonograph record installed on the Voyager 2 space probe.
Carpenter was eager to shed his image as a maker of exploitative thrillers and make something new in his filmography. Despite receiving positive reviews, it barely passed its budget.
  • Budget: $24,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $28,744,356. ($86.4 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $28,744,356.

Big Trouble in Little China (1986)

"Jack Burton's is in for some serious trouble and you're in for some serious fun."
His ninth film. It stars Kurt Russell, Kim Cattrall, Dennis Dun and James Hong. The film tells the story of truck driver Jack Burton, who helps his friend Wang Chi rescue Wang's green-eyed fiancée from bandits in San Francisco's Chinatown. They go into the mysterious underworld beneath Chinatown, where they face an ancient sorcerer named David Lo Pan, who requires a woman with green eyes to marry him in order to be released from a centuries-old curse.
While 20th Century Fox was struggling with the film's tone and script, they decided to hire Carpenter as he could film very quick, giving him 10 weeks of pre-production. It didn't help that the film was competing against The Golden Child, a comedy starring Eddie Murphy with a similar theme. Carpenter made sure to accelerate filming so that the film could open months before The Golden Child. Carpenter envisioned the film as an inverse of traditional scenarios in action films with a Caucasian protagonist helped by a minority sidekick.
The film received very positive reviews from critics. But that didn't translate to box office success, as the film made a disastrous $11 million domestically, which was worse than any of Carpenter's films. After the commercial and critical failure of the film, Carpenter became very disillusioned with Hollywood and became an independent filmmaker.
  • Budget: $25,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $11,100,000. ($31.6 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $11,100,000.

Prince of Darkness (1987)

"Before man walked the Earth... it slept for centuries. It is evil. It is real. It is awakening."
His tenth film. It stars Donald Pleasence, Victor Wong, Jameson Parker, and Lisa Blount. It follows a group of quantum physics students in Los Angeles who are asked to assist a Catholic priest in investigating an ancient cylinder of liquid discovered in a monastery, which they come to find is a sentient, liquid embodiment of the son of Satan.
The film received mixed reviews, with some feeling the film did not accomplish its goals. But it was a much needed success at the box office for Carpenter.
  • Budget: $3,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $14,182,492. ($38.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $14,182,492.

They Live (1988)

"You see them on the street. You watch them on TV. You might even vote for one this fall. You think they're people just like you. You're wrong. Dead wrong."
His 11th film. Based on the short story Eight O'Clock in the Morning by Ray Nelson, it stars Roddy Piper, Keith David, and Meg Foster. The film follows an unnamed drifter who discovers through special sunglasses that the ruling class are aliens concealing their appearance and manipulating people to consume, breed, and conform to the status quo via subliminal messages in mass media.
Carpenter acquired the film rights to both the comic book and short story and wrote the screenplay, using Nelson's story as a basis for the film's structure. Because the screenplay was the product of so many sources, Carpenter decided to use the pseudonym "Frank Armitage", an allusion to one of his favorite writers, H. P. Lovecraft. For the role of Nada, the filmmaker cast professional wrestler Roddy Piper, whom he had met at WrestleMania III earlier in 1987. For Carpenter, it was an easy choice: "Unlike most Hollywood actors, Roddy has life written all over him."
The film debuted at #1, although it dropped very quickly, it was still a small box office success for Carpenter. It received negative reviews for its social commentary, writing, and acting. However, its reputation grew with time, and it's now one of Carpenter's greatest films. And for having one of the best quotes in cinema history:
"I have come here to chew bubblegum and kick ass. And I'm all out of bubblegum."
  • Budget: $3,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $13,447,978. ($35.5 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $13,447,978.

Memoirs of an Invisible Man (1992)

"Women want him for his wit. The C.I.A. wants him for his body. All Nick wants is his molecules back."
His 12th film. Loosely based on the novel by H.F. Saint, it stars Chevy Chase, Daryl Hannah, Sam Neill, Michael McKean and Stephen Tobolowsky.
Saint's novel attracted the attention of Chase, who bought the rights even though the novel wasn't finished. William Goldman was assigned to write the screenplay in the mid 1980s, by which time Ivan Reitman was attached to direct. While Reitman liked the script, Chase (who financed it as his passion project) disapproved and he decided to leave. Wanting less comedy, Chase approached Carpenter over directing the film. While Carpenter preferred being independent, he agreed to direct the film, especially after Chase vouched for him to the studio.
The film was panned by critics and was another box office dud for Carpenter. Carpenter would go on to say that the production of the film was very troubling and vigorous. While also battling studio executives, Carpenter claimed Chase and Hannah were "the stuff of nightmares" and "impossible to direct". In 2023, he said:
"It gave me a chance to make a quasi-serious movie. But Chevy Chase, Sam Neill — who I love and had a longtime friendship with — and Warner Bros. … I worked for them, and it was pleasant. No, it wasn’t pleasant at all. I’m lying to you. It was a horror show. I really wanted to quit the business after that movie. God, I don’t want to talk about why, but let’s just say there were personalities on that film … he shall not be named who needs to be killed. No, no, no, that’s terrible. He needs to be set on fire. No, no, no. Anyway, it’s all fine. I survived it."
Mmm, I wonder who is that "he" 🤔
  • Budget: $40,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $14,358,033. ($31.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $14,358,033.

In the Mouth of Madness (1994)

"Lived any good books lately?"
His 13th film. It stars Sam Neill, Julie Carmen, Jürgen Prochnow, David Warner and Charlton Heston. It follows John Trent, an insurance investigator who visits a small town while looking into the disappearance of a successful author of horror novels, and begins to question his sanity as the lines between reality and fiction seem to blur.
The film received mixed reviews and was another bomb for Carpenter. But it has found some fans, who deemed it as an underrated piece of work.
  • Budget: $8,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,924,549. ($18.8 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $8,924,549.

Village of the Damned (1995)

"Beware the children."
His 14th film. A remake of the 1960 film, it stars starring Christopher Reeve, Linda Kozlowski, Kirstie Alley, Michael Paré, Mark Hamill, and Meredith Salenger. The plot follows a small town's women who give birth to unfriendly alien children posing as humans.
The film was another critical and commercial dud for Carpenter. The film also marked the last theatrical performance by Reeve, before his paralysis. Carpenter described the film as a "contractual assignment" that he was "really not passionate about" and stated that it is one of his least favorite films that he's made as a director.
  • Budget: $22,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $9,418,365. ($19.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $9,418,365.

Escape from L.A. (1996)

"Snake is back."
His 15th film. The sequel to Escape from New York, it stars Kurt Russell, Steve Buscemi, Stacy Keach, Bruce Campbell, Peter Fonda, and Pam Grier. When a terrorist brainwashes Utopia, the daughter of the President, into stealing a detonation device, Snake Plissken is assigned to find the device and the girl in Los Angeles.
A sequel was stuck in development hell for years. Unsatisfied with the drafts, Carpenter and Russell decided to write the film themselves, along with Debra Hill. Carpenter insists that Russell's persistence allowed the film to be made, since "Snake Plissken was a character he loved and wanted to play again." Carpenter credited that same enthusiasm with motivating Russell's work on the script, declaring "I used his passion to do the movie to get him to write more".
The film received mixed reviews, who deemed it as inferior to the original. While the film made as much as the original in North America and was his highest grossing film in decades, it also carried a higher budget, so it was another flop for Carpenter. Time was kind to the film, and is considered as a worthy follow-up. Carpenter himself says that he is proud of the film, and even says is better than the original.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $25,477,365. ($50.7 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $42,377,365.

Vampires (1998)

"Prepare for the dawn."
His 16th film. Based on the novel Vampire$ by John Steakley, it stars James Woods, Daniel Baldwin, Sheryl Lee, Thomas Ian Griffith, Maximilian Schell, and Tim Guinee. It follows Jack Crow, the leader of a team of vampire hunters. After his parents were murdered by vampires, Crow was raised by the Catholic Church to become their "master slayer". The plot is centered on Crow's efforts to prevent a centuries-old cross from falling into the hands of Jan Valek, the first and most powerful of all vampires.
After making Escape from L.A., Carpenter considered quitting as he stopped having fun with filmmaking. However, he was fascinated by the novel and set out to adapt it. After all potential actors turned down the offer to play Crow, he offered it to James Woods. Woods was interested in doing the film because he had never been offered a horror film before and wanted to try something new. The MPAA took issue with the film's over-the-top violence, threatening to give it an NC-17 rating unless some of the gore was cut. Ultimately, about 20 seconds of footage was cut from the film.
You can guess how it all went. Surprise surprise, another flop.
  • Budget: $50,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $20,308,772. ($38.9 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $20,308,772.

Ghost of Mars (2001)

His 17th film. It stars Natasha Henstridge, Ice Cube, Jason Statham, Pam Grier, Clea DuVall and Joanna Cassidy. Set on a colonized Mars in the 22nd century, the film follows a squad of police officers and a convicted criminal who fight against the residents of a mining colony who have been possessed by the ghosts of the planet's original inhabitants.
Broken record but you are right: another bomb. Carpenter stated he was intentionally trying to make the film as over-the-top and tongue-in-cheek as possible. He claimed he was trying to make a mindless and silly, yet highly entertaining and thrilling, action flick where "the universe allows its characters and plot points to be silly without becoming full-fledged comedies."
  • Budget: $28,000,000.
  • Domestic gross: $8,709,640. ($15.3 million adjusted)
  • Worldwide gross: $14,010,832.

The Ward (2010)

"Only sanity can keep you alive."
His 18th and final film. It stars Amber Heard, Mamie Gummer, Danielle Panabaker, Laura-Leigh, Lyndsy Fonseca and Jared Harris. Set in 1966, the film chronicles a young woman who is institutionalized after setting fire to a house, and who finds herself haunted by the ghost of a former inmate at the psychiatric ward.
After Ghosts of Mars, Carpenter simply lost interest in filmmaking. In the meantime he had done two episodes for the anthology TV show Masters of Horror, and he said that the series reminded him of why he fell in love with the craft in the first place. Carpenter said that the script "came along at the right time for me", and he was particularly fascinated by how the film took place within a single location.
The film received a very limited run in theaters before hitting digital, so it became another flop and his lowest film ever. It also received poor reviews, and some lamented that this would be his swan song.

Other Projects

As mentioned, he is also a composer, having scored nearly all his films. He also scored the recent Halloween trilogy, even though he didn't write nor direct anything.
Many of his films have been remade and he doesn't care in the slightest. He has said that they can do whatever they want as long as he gets paid.
“I love it, if they are going to pay me money. If they pay me, it’s wonderful. If they don’t pay me, I don’t care. I think it’s unfair if they don’t pay me. I think everyone should pay me. Why not? I’m an old guy now and I need money. Send me money.”

The Future

Carpenter has not directed another film ever since. He has said multiple times that he feels burned out by the industry and he is not interested in returning to the director's chair. He said he would only return for a new film under three conditions: it needs a reasonable budget, plenty of time to prepare, and time off for the basketball season and the playoffs.
He said he is content with his current lifestyle. What's that lifestyle? In his words, "Get up late, watch a little news, play a video game, watch some basketball, go to bed." Ain't that the dream?

The Verdict

Not reliable. Not even close.
Well, he ain't known as a cult filmmaker for nothing. Carpenter didn't get the respect and appreciation he deserved at first, so he was often struggling to find an audience in theaters. Despite so many bombs, studios continued financing him, which is a welcome surprise. At least, he got to see that his once-reviled works are now an influential and beloved part of cinema. Now, as he puts it, his career would look far more different if The Thing wasn't a commercial and critical dud in its initial release. We can't theorize, for we don't know this kind of what if. But Carpenter built an impressive and memorable filmography, even if his later works represented some of the worst films he made.
And look, he is content with retirement. Playing video games and watching the NBA sounds like a good deal for anyone.
Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Danny Boyle. One of Britain's most important directors.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. Well, we'll later talk about... Robert Zemeckis. He was one of the biggest filmmakers, now it's a surprise if he makes a hit.
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
April 29-May 5 Danny Boyle It was a long wait, but 28 Years Later is finally happening.
May 6-12 Wes Craven A horror legend.
May 13-19 Clint Eastwood Great actor. Great director.
May 20-26 Robert Zemeckis Can we get old Zemeckis back?
Who should be next after Zemeckis? That's up to you.

2024.04.27 19:14 Brilliant_Beyond7674 Do I trust my boyfriend that he didn’t cheat on me?

THT fam… I need help. Please.
My 24F boyfriend 24M and I have been dating since high school. We broke up for two years while I was in college. Experienced other people, and yet felt like we were made to be. I cannot express how much I love my boyfriend. He is my best friend. I can be my true self around him and Vice versa. He knows what I am thinking before I say it, he’s thoughtful, and golfs with my grandpa.
Fall of 2022 I had a feeling something was going on. I went through his phone and found that he had been texting his ex girlfriend for about 6 months. Nothing physical ever happened. But he would say “I miss you” and other various things. I was devastated.
When I asked why he would do this he said he wanted to get back at her for all she did to him. She was horrible to him. Was cheating on him with her ex and had her ex jump him. My boyfriend is a golden retriever and that was the first time he had ever been in a fight.
I have done my best to move past this. I love him and we all make mistakes. We were 22 at the time, there is so much to figure out. I wanted to give him grace. Fast forward to summer 23 he had a coworker who had me raising my eyebrows. Her name is Laura. Laura is our age except she is, well was married. His friends at work would joke about how she flirts with everyone and doesn’t act like she’s married. Well… she ended up getting a divorce fall of 23.
This past fall I went through his phone again. My 6th sense was going off and I was right. He had been giving her rides home from work. This was not something I was okay with because I did not get good vibes from her. Two weeks ago I saw Laura’s friend in our local bar and I went up to her. I asked - girl to girl - if I should have been worried or if any lines got crossed. Laura’s friend told me that she was sure nothing happened physically between the two of them. She said things may have gotten flirty. This I already knew and just moved past it the best I could.
Yesterday I was at the same bar with my friends and Laura was there. I decided to go up and ask her what happened. In a very friendly way. I just said girl to girl should I have been concerned. Laura told me that it wasn’t her place, and that it is up to me to trust my boyfriend. I agree with this, but when I asked if anything physical happened she said yes. She didn’t give me any details aside from it not being sex.
Now for where I need help. Laura lies. She lied to may of my boyfriends work friends to the point where she lost all coworker relationships. Two of my boyfriends female coworkers refused to speak to her at the end of Laura’s time at that job because of all of the malicious lies she told.
I caught Laura in a lie when she was talking to me. She told me she stopped by my boyfriends work last week with friends for happy hour. Told me that afterwards my boyfriend texted her and asked how she was doing etc, and then blocked her again. Here’s the thing - my boyfriend did text her, but he did so because she was trying to get a job there again because there is a new management team. He told her that she is not allowed to work there because of the lies she told her last go around, lying about skill sets she doesn’t have, etc.
When I confronted my boyfriend with the news of him potentially cheating on me he swore up and down that he didn’t. Who do I believe?

2024.04.26 16:03 TurianCabal Short Story: The Backup, Part 21: The Messenger

Note: non-canon
“Are you kidding me?”
Emma looked at me, freshly exited from the portal.
“Jealous?” I put my hands on my hips. “It’s the black, right?”
“They…there was another suit and they never told me?” She was shocked. “And they let you choose the color?”
“I thought it looked good on me.”
I could tell she was rolling her eyes.
“I think the black stands out.” Thacea said. “The polish is very well done.”
“I concur.” Thalmin added on.
Illunor stared at me. “It looks like you are covered by the soot of a dragon’s breath.”
I snorted. “Good one.”
Emma looked at my suit. “They give you any upgrades?”
“No. Don’t have an EVI either.”
“Damn. I’m surprised that they put it together so quickly. How’s it feel?”
“It’s like I’m wearing a tank.”
“You’ll get used to it, trust me. It’s-”
Knock knock.
“I’ll get it.” Emma walked over to the door, opening it. “Apprentice-”
“Cadet Booker.” The elf nodded. “You are needed immediately.”
“I’m sorry?”
“I apologize for the disturbance, but you are needed now.” The elf’s eyes narrowed. “This is most urgent, and cannot be delayed.”
“I…see.” She turned towards me. “Let’s go.”
I began to follow Emma.
What could this be?
_____
Faculty Tower, Staff Meeting Room. Local Time: 1456 Hours.
After a hasty trip through shortcuts and backrooms, led by an unusually tight-lipped Larial, we arrived at a familiar sight.
The same room where the Librarian condemned the black-robed Mal’Tory to his fate.
The same room where the Academy’s assembled professors ousted their dean.
Those same professors, as well as the white-robed Vanavan, sat in those very same seats, some giving us looks of sympathy and worry.
As well as…
“Oh, shit. I heard Emma practically seethe through our private channel, just beating me to the punch.
“They sent ANOTHER black-robe!?” I shot back, the pit of my stomach reflexively coiling in dread.
“Greetings. Cadet Emma Booker, yes? Please, take a seat.” The man in question, having noticed our approach, motioned towards a singular chair, notably unadorned compared to its peers. With only a moment of reluctant hesitation from Emma, she moved to occupy it - the chair surprisingly taking the weight of her suit without the aid of any observable spell.
“Ah, that’s simply grand. It would seem that the furniture I requested in anticipation of your presence here was adequate enough to withstand your armored form. It would be unbecoming of a student of this institution to lose face to a mere chair, yes?”

If nothing else, this guy was much more of a conversationalist than the last one.
“...Yeah, I guess so… sir?” Emma replied with an undercurrent of trepidation.
“His Eternal Majesty’s personally-appointed black-robed representative to the Transgracian Academy for the Magical Arts, one Professor Alak Chergena. A pleasure to meet you, Cadet Booker.”
Oh.
Oh dear.
So he knows about us now.
I could sense the same revelation hitting Emma with the force of a truck, but unlike me she had proven unable to slink into a corner and was actively being spoken to; it was only the Nexian love for wasting conversational time that allowed her lack of any sort of initial response to go relatively unnoticed.
“...I… It’s nice to meet you as well, Professor Chergena.” Emma eventually managed. “But why bring my golem and I here alone, if your intention was just to introduce yourself? Surely you’re too busy to do this with every student, yeah? That’s what emergency assemblies are for? Heck, even breakfast?”
“Your assertion would be correct, unfortunate less-than-enlightened ramble notwithstanding. It would seem that you and your puppet,” the black-robed Professor managed to lock eyes with me under my suit, sending an involuntary shiver down my spine before shifting back to Emma just as quickly. “Have been at the center of a lot of ill attention as of late. From my predecessor’s attempts on the lives of you and those in your peer-group, for which I apologize,” he directly stated, taking us completely by surprise, “to your purported role in the reshuffling of the faculty present here with us,” Vanavan visibly turned his head away from us, if only slightly. The rest of the faculty held their best poker faces, though body language suggested varying signs of discomfort. “To your dealings with The Library, again, spurred on in large part due to the direct antagonization by my predecessor, but all the same has seen that institution which has been hosted by The Nexus for eons abandon its true home for that which is lesser, as well as much else.” Chergena finally relented.
At least, that’s what I thought, before he started up again mere seconds later.
“Which brings us to the true meat of why you have been brought before us. Before me.” His tone changed to something markedly less friendly. “Your actions over the past weeks, Cadet Emma Booker, have served to threaten, and indeed disrupt the Status Eternia that guards the eternal sanctity of civilization. Now, it can plainly be seen through the craftsmanship of the armor that adorns both yourself and your inanimate servile construct,” the black-robe gave me another brief flick of the eyes. “As well as your novel weapons which, in spite of their primitive mana-less disposition, have managed to dispatch those creatures which even this faculty, and by extension myself, would have difficulty in subduing, to your own personal status as a commoner, that your realm has been engaged in a constant battle against ruination. A constant battle, a losing battle, even, that has seen your realm’s kind shed whatever form of proper decorum you may have once possessed, to throw your all into the creation of weapons of war; unburdened by advanced sociological organizations.”
“I understand, that in these contexts, perhaps the greatest show of an Earthrealmer’s civility would be those which destabilize, disrupt, and decimate the forces of ruination; that which would see what little civilization your realm has retained lost to the annals of history. However,” Professor Chergena continued. “You must realize that you now find yourself at the center of civilization. The center of all civilizations. Indeed, far from a ravenous tribe of barbarians, The Nexus, under the enlightened guidance and tutelage of His Majesty, has delivered many a realm from the same jaws of apocalypse that you yourself have likely stared down before your induction into this Academy. It is under these contexts,” he fixed Emma with a hard stare. “That your actions, however well-meaning you believe them to be in the service of the propagation of civilization, are actively detrimental to a society as perfect and vibrant as the one you find yourself in right now.”
“The Adventurer hunts the common beast, the Guard fights the mad king’s shield-bearer, and the Mage delivers the force of the righteous against that which threatens to undo what we strive to maintain. To put it in simpler words, Cadet Booker, there is no extraneous danger in the Nexus - not one created without direct action and intent to do so. Your fear of that which was unfamiliar, including the rejection of the Oath of Binding, as well as your realm’s defiling of a heretofore-unknown Gift, provoked the previous black-robe into their actions against you. Your martial responses thus forced him to parry, in an unfortunate series of escalatory actions that has brought me to this very academy, and seen perhaps the greatest arsenal of knowledge leave us, those who can use that most effectively in the quest to maintain the longevity of civilization - all civilization.”
“Let this meeting prove to be a stern word of caution to you, Cadet Emma Booker. For while you may believe that your actions in undermining the Status Eternia to be beneficial to the propagation of the civil order, it is anything but. To simply acknowledge your rank and station, and to listen to your betters, is to participate in the very pinnacle of civilization.” His steely gaze at Emma, maintained throughout his entire monologue, hardened as he reached his conclusion. “I understand that your realm stands on the precipice of destruction, Cadet. But that in of itself is not an acceptable reason for this behavior of yours; to fight ruination where there is simply none. Be still and calm your spirit, for owing to the apparent condition of peril amongst your people, we shall soon arrive and save Earthrealm ourselves, just as we have done with the thousands of realms before you. You need only exercise patience, and deliverance will come in return.”
Professor Chergena finally stood back, his hardened look fading slightly.
“That is all, Cadet Booker. From here on out, I would encourage you to redirect your efforts in chasing societal phantoms to your own studies - for both the safety of yourself and your fellow students. Should you fail to heed this most valuable advice, I shall know and take appropriate actions to protect this Academy from incurring further dishonor. Now then, if you would be so kind as to collect your golem and return to your dormitory - Apprentice Larial will show you the way. This faculty has much to discuss, and there are only so many hours in the day.”
Emma silently got up from the chair, her and I moving towards the door without so much as a word spoken, quickly received by a Larial that looked more unnerved than on her arrival.
“Farewell, Cadet Emma Booker. May we, for the sake of both of us, not have to meet again so soon, and under such dire circumstances.”
______
Dragon’s Heart Tower, Level 23, Residence 30, Living Room. Local Time: 1537 Hours.
Emma and I arrived back at the dorm at what increasingly became a breakneck pace, as our own mutual debrief carried with it the weight of perhaps the greatest threat openly declared against the UN in its entire history.
“I… There has to be some sort of different meaning to that-”
“There isn’t, Emma. The man personally sent here by the Big Boss himself just said we’re going to war.”
We practically burst back through the dorm doors, only paying a curt nod to a winded-looking Larial, who had been increasingly struggling to keep up.
“Well, James, it just so happens that we’re in the company of three people who know just a little bit about subliminal messaging,” came Emma’s immediate retort, as we barged into the the Living Room, starting an Avinor, a Lupinor, and a Vunerian in the process.
“...Emma? James? Are you two quite alright?” Thacea immediately broke the awkward silence that ensued. “Was there some sort of pressing issue pertaining to the faculty that needed attention?”
“My thoughts exactly,” Thalmin affirmed. “Given the chaotic state of the Academy, given our latest upsets, it’s only natural that there was a loose end or two that required tying.”
The blue creature said nothing, electing to gaze at us expectantly.
“It’s… complicated,” I managed to get out, reaching for my tablet. “And I think it’s better if we showed you.”

2 Hours Later
“Indeed, Emma. As much as I wish it to be otherwise, it is highly unlikely that Professor Chergena’s words were an empty threat.” Thacea confirmed what had become our greatest fears with a single sentence. “For a person such as himself, both with regard to his rank and station, and the fact that he was explicitly sent by His Eternal Majesty, it would be illogical and counterproductive to take a stance that is different in any way to the current established order. That is to say,” she concluded, “That the new Black-Robe is speaking the truth. Earthrealm faces down the tip of the Nexian Spear, Emma, James.”

“For what it’s worth, you two, Havenbrock stands with you and your cause.” Thalmin interjected. “You and your people are perhaps the greatest chance history will ever offer in finally throwing off the Nexian yoke; both for my own realm and the thousands of others it has subjugated.”
“I… Thank you, Thalmin, but-”
“Now, now, James. I was not finished.” The Lupinor held up a finger, paired with a toothy grin. “I know that, given the inherent limitations in inter-realm communications and transportation, that my kin will not be able to assist you directly. Therefore, at least allow me to give you some form of aid by which to fight for your, and our, freedoms.” With an amount of martial flair that I could only dream of possessing, Thalmin drew out his dagger, stretching it out to its full length as a greatsword, before-
LOCALIZED SOURCE OF MANA-RADIATION DETECTED: 400% ABOVE BACKGROUND LEVELS.
-using a spell that had remained unknown to us, evicting any and all traces of detectable mana from the weapon.
Thalmin presented it to me.
“You have my sword.”
To say this was unexpected was an understatement.
To say that it meant the world to be would be a disservice to the statement.
“Thalmin, I… But the magic you had in-”
“If my memory serves me right, mana would be poisonous to an Earthrealmer, yes? It would be difficult to use a weapon if it were actively trying to kill you.” He left off with a snarky tone.
“...I will treasure this.” Within the safety of my mana-repulsion field, I took off my own helmet, matching Thalmin’s savage grin with one of my own. “And don’t worry. It’s not gonna be a mantlepiece, either.” He nodded sagely in return.
“Of course, while my realm, much the same as Prince Havenbrock’s, cannot lend any material support to yours,” Thacea re-joined the conversation, you will have our aid in the realm of espionage; the deconstruction of Nexian social decorum with the purpose of establishing a clearly defined narrative.”
“Which is something we’ll be eternally grateful for, Thacea,” Emma replied.
And then there was one.
Ilunor, having put on a stoic visage for the entire exchange, finally dropped it with a hefty sigh.
“While I subscribe to the axioms of civilization, and the principles of the Perpetual Regime… I cannot deny that this move from His Eternal Majesty is uncharacteristically shortsighted.” His eyes flashed with realization, before finally meeting both of our gazes.
“He doesn’t know. There’s no way He couldn’t have possibly known the nature of your realm, as shown through your sight-seer,” He half-gasped out. “All logic in absence of that would point to an uppity mana-deficient newrealm trying to undermine Nexian authority. This is the same conclusion Professor Chergena came to. It stands to reason, then, that His Eternal Majesty, for all his power and wisdom, is operating with an incomplete picture of who he wishes to reform.”
Reform, Ilunor?” I questioned the lizard, putting my helmet back on.
“Yes, James, reform.” He responded in kind. “The Nexian Reformations are a series of edicts thrust upon any newrealm that makes contact, to preserve the longevity of their civilization, modeled off the Nexian System, under the watch and scrutiny of The Nexus. In the case of Earthrealm, that would entail a dismantling of your ‘Euen, and a return to the rule of monarchs.”
“A return to Feudalism.” Emma stately bluntly.
Three nods immediately followed that summary.
“...Thank you, Ilunor, for that information.” I said curtly. “And thank all of you for your support.” The three of them responded with varying degrees of acknowledgement.
“With that being said,” Emma concluded, starting to walk to her tent with me in tow. “We’ve got a report to write.”
________
Greater United Nations, Earth, Atlantic Ocean Floor. Institute of Anomalous Studies Portal Complex. 0800 Hours UNST.
Second Lieutenant James O’Neil appeared in the Portal Room on an unscheduled return, seconds before an emergency-priority report was received from Cadet Emma Booker’s Exo-reality Communications Suite. Director Laura Weir was immediately flagged down, in a manner that stretched the definition of professional, before being pulled into an emergency meeting with one O’Neil, as well as vital staff, in addition to various government and military representatives.
Thirty minutes later, as Captain Li of the United Nations Long Range Expeditionary Forces was engaged in a near-shouting match with several members of the Sociology Department, a package was received in the Portal Room, bearing what had been previously identified as official Nexian Markings. A hasty read and a more thorough re-read of the elaborately-packaged ultimatum presented to them served to extinguish any ideas or fears of a potential miscommunication with the powers beyond the portal.
Director Weir, three hours and forty-five minutes after James O’Neil’s return, relayed the demands of The Nexus, as well as the all-but-confirmed preparations for war to all relevant government and military offices.
________
Earth-Luna Lagrange Point L1, Greater United Nations General Assembly Parliamentary Capitol. Office of the First Secretary. 1200 Hours UNST.
The most powerful human alive, having been interrupted from a late-morning brunch, sat at the front of the table, the First Speaker immediately adjacent to them. The First Commanders of the United Nations Armed Forces sat on their flanks, all of them having been present in the Sol System by lucky chance; all had been authorized the use of emergency warps, their ships arriving in Earth-Luna space within minutes. The heads of the executive departments, those still within Sol, were also present.
Speaking remotely from Earth, Director Weir of the United Nations Science Advisory’s Institute for Anomalous studies, joined on her right by a nervous but determined young Lieutenant, recounted the demands of the enigmatic civilization beyond the precipice.
The dismantling of “Earthrealm’s seditious governing institutions.”
The reinstatement of the Monarchs of those few remaining relevant member states to “Their positions of rightful authority, to swear an oath of fealty to His Eternal Majesty.”
The “Immediate revocation of unwarranted and undeserved ‘commoner privileges.’ ”
A return of Humanity to a medieval state, lest it be subjected to the interdimensional jackboot.
The Secretary and Speaker queried about the state of the UN’s military and logistical assets.
It was deftly relayed that, with Lieutenant O’Neil’s prior report to the First Commanders, that tangible plans had been laid for a full evacuation of Earth’s surface of all non-military personnel within 4 months.
A brief consultation in turn with the only one who had seen The Nexus for themselves, Lieutenant O’Neil, would solidify the Secretary’s decision.
After an on-the-spot decision to make James O’Neil the “Special Advisor to the First Speaker on Exo-Reality Affairs, a post ordained to bridge the imminent chasm that would be the gap in knowledge between the military and the vast majority of the civilian government, two executive decisions would be made.
The re-designation of The Nexian diplomatic standing to an E-9 as per the Revised New Oslo Criteria,
And the enabling of “Plan Arc.”
Fifteen minutes after the conclusion of the meeting of the UN’s highest government and military leaders, scarcely enough for contacted news agencies to prepare their emergency broadcasts, thirty billion people would be forced from their homes.
As transport ships both in the Sol System and in Extrasolar Space, on pleasure cruises, carrying cargo, and everything in between received their alerts through the QE network and started to spool up their warp drives, the First Secretary collapsed into the finely-upholstered chair in their personal office, having finagled a minute of solitude from their Press Secretary; their emergency address would be upon them imminently.
The First Secretary of the United Nations of Earth and Luna nibbled on their now-cold food, finding that they were no longer hungry.
Earth, Acela Corridor, NYC New Quarter, Brooklyn, Inside of a megatall skyscraper. Room 2325. Booker Residence. 1317 Hours UNST.
The hero of the Jovian Insurrection, for the briefest of moments, though she was back on that damned station when every electronic device with a speaker blared in an ear-splitting klaxon. Immediately regaining her senses, Ran Booker saw a Bim-Bim-shaped mass of irritated fur dart underneath a table, before digesting the message displayed on and orated out of every screen in her apartment.
“ATTENTION. ATTENTION. THIS IS AN EMERGENCY BROADCAST FROM THE FIRST SECRETARY, FIRST SPEAKER, AND THE UNIFIED CENTRAL COMMAND. AS OF THIS MORNING, THE PRESENCE OF A HOSTILE INTERDIMENSIONAL POLITY KNOWN AS ‘THE NEXUS’ HAS BEEN CONFIRMED, WITH DIRECT ACCESS TO EARTH.
UN AGENTS OPERATING WITHIN ‘THE NEXUS’ HAVE CONFIRMED INITIAL PREPARATIONS FOR A MILITARY INVASION OF EARTH ARE UNDERWAY. ESTIMATED TIME OF INVASION IS CURRENTLY UNKNOWN.
THE FIRST SECRETARY AND SPEAKER, IN CONJUNCTION WITH THE ARMED FORCES AND THE UNITED NATIONS EMERGENCY RELOCATION OFFICE, HAVE AUTHORIZED THE TOTAL EVACUATION OF ALL CIVILIAN PERSONNEL FROM EARTH’S SURFACE. INFORMATION REGARDING YOUR TIME AND PLACE OF EVACUATION SHALL BE SENT TO YOUR PERSONAL DEVICES.
PLEASE REMAIN CALM. PLEASE COOPERATE WITH STATE AND FEDERAL GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AT THIS TIME.
MORE INFORMATION SHALL BE GIVEN AS IT IS RECEIVED. PLEASE REMAIN UPDATED THROUGH YOUR LOCAL NEWS OUTLETS AS WELL AS THIS EMERGENCY MESSAGE CHANNEL.
THIS MESSAGE WILL REPEAT THREE TIMES.”
It took only a handful of seconds of hearing the shouts of her neighbors, as well as the sudden cacophony of screams from the city below for Ran to understand that, despite the behest of the message to “remain calm,” New York and Acela’s riot police would likely be donning their gear for the first time outside of drill for the first time in decades.
Soon after, much to her lack of surprise, her phone started buzzing, an unknown number staring back at her before she swiped to answer, immediately holding it to her ear.
“This is Booker.”
“Sergeant Major Booker, the gruff voice on the other end of the line started. “This is General Mark Stone of the United Nations TSEC Special Operations Group. You are being reactivated, effective immediately. You have two hours to report to the High Security Terminal at the Port of New York and New Jersey. Your identity will be confirmed and you will receive further orders.”
“Roger.”
The line went dead immediately after, Sergeant Major Ran Booker of the United Nations Terrestrial Space and Expeditionary Command taking another moment to regard the chaos that had now enveloped what had once been a peaceful city, the roar of police and other emergency sirens re-introducing a type of mid-millenium flair that was better left to the annals of history.
It would seem that the young man who had knocked on her door so recently had his hands full.
The same force that had repeatedly tried to kill her adoptive daughter now threatened to raze Humanity’s cradle to the ground.
For all the centuries of Humanity’s preparations to fight an extraterrestrial enemy, they had still been caught by absolute surprise.
War was coming.
And Ran Booker now faced the most difficult challenge of her life.
Finding a goddamn cat-sitter.
Orion Spur, 2500 Light-years from Earth. 2250 Light-years from UN incorporated space. Mid-Warp. Fleet time: 1319 Hours.
Commodore John Perry, were he back on Earth, would’ve been an incredibly busy man. Organizing this Long Patrol had been a tall order, even considering his own admittedly small role in the finer details. However, this far out into space, and in warp space at that, there was little else for him to do but sit at the bridge of the Heavy Cruiser LREFS Pathfinder and watch the stars pass him by like raindrops on a windshield.
This had been his routing for months; chart another lifeless rock, perhaps a gas giant or two, harvest an asteroid when needed, then move on to the next system.
Perhaps, he thought to himself, I need a change of pace.
And it was at that moment that the ship’s QE machine whined to life with a series of coded beeps that designated the received message as the highest-possible priority.
He immediately read it, of course.
After checking and double-checking its contents, as well as composing and sending off a message to the rest of his own Lead Task Unit, Commodore Perry calmly stood up from the seat he had taken, met the worried gazes of the few bridge crew were needed to operate the Pathfinder, and gently slammed his fist on the General Quarters alarm.

10 Minutes Later
“I am going to relay to you what every captain on every other ship of this patrol group is telling their own crews right now.” Perry forced out in an even tone, over the ship-wide intercom to his crew, assembled at their battle stations. “Fifteen minutes ago, we received a message from LREF Command back home. They have confirmed the presence of a hostile extraterrestrial force on Earth’s doorstep.” Several gasps were heard from the now-packed bridge of the ship. Others looked on, ashen-faced.
“This polity, known to us as ‘The Nexus,’ sent our leaders an ultimatum. One that would see Humanity reduced to serfs. See us returned to a medieval state.” Several grimaces joined the chorus of expressions dotting the bridge. “It goes without saying what our answer to such demands are.” Resolute determination, now. “It is for that reason, everyone, that I have elected to cut our patrol short. It’s entirely possible that we’re too far out to render any assistance, but given the seeming gap in capabilities represented by their mastery in interdimensional travel, in spite of other limitations, the coming conflict may be long and grueling.”
“Our stop at the next system will be our last, at which point we will hold to rendezvous with all other task units in our Patrol Group before proceeding directly back to Earth. And speaking of-” Perry turned to the helmsman. “We are nearly due to drop out of warp, yes?”
“In approximately three hours, sir. I’d recommend taking a seat and keeping everyone at their stations.”
“And so it shall be.”

“Dropping out of warp in T-minus 10, 9, 8…”
Commodore John Perry never so desperately wanted to be back home in his life.
It was under threat.
Everything he knew, loved, and held dear, save for the Patrol Group he commanded at this instant, was liable to be destroyed.
“7, 6, 5…”
He was going to get this job done as quickly as possible.
He needed to get back.
“4, 3, 2, 1…”
He owed it to everyone here.
“Warp Drive disengaged!”
The sight of smeared stars on the transparent metal in front of him suddenly disappeared, replaced with a single white sun immediately ahead of them. Several smaller “stars” could be seen nearby. All around him, the 28 other combat ships of his patrol group, as well as the handful of support craft blinked into existence in a ring around the Pathfinder kilometers away, in a professionally choreographed display.
Telescopes pointed at this system, almost a thousand years ago, had identified six planets. Two gas giants, four rocky bodies. Fleet-wide sensors confirmed those findings, as well as an asteroid belt between the rocky planets and gas giants.
The second-closest to its star was in the habitable zone of its G2V-class star. That same one hosted an atmospheric composition that was one of the closest mirrors to Earth on record. That same one also had a mass nearly identical to the homeworld.
It was the sole reason Perry had elected to not simply disengage warp in the middle of interstellar space, turn back, and gun it for friendlier waters.
If nothing else, it may one day make a great colony.
Perry elected to simply get it over with, before anything else unexpected happened.
“Sir! I’m picking something up on the Exotic Energy Detection Suite! It’s coming from the planet in the habitable zone!”
Fuck.
Perry was already on his newly-liberated fleet-wide radio as he commanded his response. “All ships, this is Commodore Perry. Set an interception course for the second planet in the system. Be prepared to decelerate into a parking orbit. Prepare for interception burn in T-minus five minutes.”
John Perry sat back in his seat, keeping up the appearance of a dignified, disciplined commanding officer.
The man behind that appearance inwardly lamented what that sensor reading had meant.
The information packet he had received, for his eyes only, had told him two things.
While “The Nexus,” as confirmed by UN operatives, was an infinite plane, there were other civilizations connected to The Nexus, “Adjacent Realms,” that had the potential to occupy Humanity’s same corner of the multiverse.
And that the “Exotic Energy” that those hastily-added sensors were meant to detect went by another name, for those locals of the Nexus and Adjacent Realms alike.
Mana.
Whether he liked it or not, the United Nations of Earth and Luna had just found another.

Next time on: ‘The Backup:’
The Beginning of the End
A/N:
This chapter took a bit longer than usual to get out, but me and my editor had to make sure it was written well.
So, everyone, I have some news.
The next chapter is going to be the last one of The Backup. But don’t worry! There is a sequel in the works. To avoid burnout, after the last chapter is posted, I’ll be taking an extended break for around a month. This sequel will be the finale of The Backup, and bring a conclusion to my story.
I want to thank everyone who upvoted and commented on this story - to each and every one of you, I’m very grateful for your help, as it motivated me to continue writing.
Special thanks to u/0strich_Master on JCB’s discord server for providing edits, lore help, and other kinds of literary assistance!
