Minnows bait

It’s a weird question, but I caught another Rainbow Trout last Saturday on pieces of salted shrimp, which makes me curious if anyone uses small baitfish as bait for trout, like minnows?

I have been fishing in two local streams recently with good success, but for the wrong fish. Don't get me wrong, I love catching anything and I find it peaceful and exhilarating either way. However, I have been catching an exhausting amount of pike minnows. I know people catch trout in the streams I have been going to but.....
If there is an abundance of pike minnow in a stream, does that typically mean that there isn't many trout? I have been using spoons and spinners, with power bait and sometimes no bait. Am I doing something wrong in the bait/lure department? I really want to catch a nice trout for dinner.

Hello. So It's been awhile since I have fished. As a kid I Was well versed in catching largemouth bass with purple worms and a texas rig. I am now kind of creek fishing/ reservoir fishing all in murky water up here in Indiana. I keep losing lures to sticks or whatever in the water so I am going back to bottom fishing. I'm trying to catch bass and crappie mainly. I have been using a skirted jig with the weed guard to offset it getting stuck. It's a 1/4 ounce and I heard that blue/black are good in murky water. - It's NOT working.
One of my places near me to fish is a fast running creek that goes into a reservoir. It seems where I am people are catching crappie and such with live minnows which I have no experience doing and would prefer to stay with plastic baits. I would try a shad looking crankbait but I swear I will just lose it.
So with those conditions in mind what are the best lures to invest in? What Am I doing wrong? Because I have spent like $30 on crankbaits and stuff only to lose them so I'm going back to texas rigs right now.
I should be retrieving all of these baits slowly? Right?
I am having trouble figuring this out on my own. I have googled of course. Maybe someone else from Indiana or a mucky condition area could help?

Took the wife, grandson and his girlfriend fishing yesterday. The day before, grandson said he was gonna outfish me. He's on his HS bass fishing team and did very well making it all the way to regional despite losing his teammate halfway through the season.
So, I end up reeling in about 7 fish that morning fairly quickly, doing nothing more than jigging live minnows of the bottom. He only brought in 1 very nice crappie. Had a nice little walleye are the hook, but it got loose right at the edge of the boat.
That's the good
My fish finder has been a little buggy lately, randomly powering off. Today was no different until on shut off and would not power back up. That's part 1 of the bad.
Part 2 was I had another line in the water with a bobber on it for some passive fishing. You can guess what happened. I'm not really paying attention to that rod and I hear the wife holler and I go to grab that rod and whatever took the bait, snatched rod and reel off into the lake and was gone. That was a brand new $50 Pflueger reel on a Ugly Stick that I already had. It was only the 2nd time at the late with that reel.
I've seen videos of rod and reels snatched off a boat but I never dreamed it would happen to me.
It was great being able to tease the grandson about landing more fish than him but it sure sucked losing that new reel.
Kinda hacked off about the fish finder, considering it hasn't had that much use in the four years I've had it.
Literally the best and worst day fishing all at the same time.

I've been planning on a big, long-term breeding project in the future (I want to see if I can intensify the olive drab color present on fathead minnows to be really pretty), but I've been having some issues outside of just budget and equipment: How do I handle issues like inbreeding, and what do I do with all of offspring that don't have any desirable traits? I know rehoming is an option, but I really don't think there's much demand at all for what most people just deem a "feedebait fish". If anyone else experienced in fish breeding has advice, I'd love to hear it.

I currently own one rod/reel:
Rod: St Croix Premier 7’ Medium Fast
Reel: Shimano SLX DC XT
Being that it’s my only set up I use it for everything. Have caught bass using soft plastics, spinnerbaits, hard minnows and soft swim baits.
Thinking about getting another rod/reel to versify what I can fish with. What would be a good choice?

Sorry if this is an obvious question, but I'm looking for somewhere online (or someone in the Knoxville, TN area) that sells rosy red minnows that are actually taken care of. I saw a wonderful video on keeping them in the aquarium, and I've kinda got my heart set on them.
But now I've realized an issue, which is that everywhere I see is selling them as feedebait fish. Even if they don't exclusively sell them in bulk by the dozens, they still keep them in crowded and dirty tanks. I just don't think my heart or my wallet could bare buying a school and having them all die to disease within a few months.

I am making a bait box out of an old igloo "micro-cooler" of sorts I got at a garage sale, it holds like a 6 pack of cans maybe, but is perfect for a couple scoops of minnows or leeches and keeps them really fresh! I have seen this particular bubbler all over the place but it just doesn't seem very high quality - plus, I'm not super stoked that it runs on D cell batteries, that adds a lot of weight!
Does anyone have any suggestions on a nicer bait bucket bubbler? I don't have a problem splurging on it a bit as the cooler was darn close to free.

Every year I go fish up in Canada. Mainly for Smallmouth, Pike and Perch. Here in America, I have a ton of luck with artificial lures (plastic worms and spinnerbaits especially). I’ve noticed that up there, I have almost no luck with artificial lures. Most fish up there almost strictly go after worms or minnows. I catch an occasional smallmouth on a lure but it’s rare. I’ve pretty much accepted this and use live bait now, but I was wondering if anyone has experienced something like this and knows a possible reason why? Just curious.

I'm a super beginner fisher and I've gone fishing about 3-4 times at some common spots in my town. I've tried small park pond, big lake/reservoir, and creeks that feed into the reservoir. I've been skunked all but once with some bluegills. I have been told twice by some people fishing around me that the fish around here don't really like worm, and that I need to get minnows/shinny spinners/something else. They seem to be catching fish on their setup. This is super confusing to me because I've learned from online that all fish will eat worms and that worms are one of the best baits. I'm unsure what to think so please let me know your thoughts.
