2024.05.14 23:37 nebirah Suggested alternatives to Canon MF656CDW

I currently have an HP Envy 6055e and I hate the constant remote monitoring. I just canceled their Instant Ink program and they just emailed me that because I'm using the instant Color (that I had paid for in the program), I'm breaking their law. Argh.
I want to get the MF656CDW (or the 653), but reviews say they are very bulky and loud.
So what's a good alternative laser (I assume) for infrequent home printing? Assume 30 pages a month. Scanning and copying is also used. Color is required.

2024.05.14 23:06 leashyb My first patient code.

Next month will be 5 years that I have been a Registered Nurse.
In honor of that, I’d like to share one (of many I have had) career defining moments…my first patient code.
I had been a RN for maybe 6 months and was working overnights from 7pm to 7:30am. I had just come on to shift and received report for my patients when the son of one of them called and asked to speak with me.
He goes on to explain that he’s concerned for his Mom because she hadn’t had much to eat or drink in the couple days she had been a patient with us. He was also concerned about her ability to communicate with staff effectively as she was older and had multiple strokes that left her forgetting a lot of her English. Instead, she tended to mumble in her native language…Polish.
After speaking with him, I immediately looked up key words in Polish I knew I would need if I was going to be able to connect with her the same way I do all my other patients.
I looked up the Polish word for nurse. Pielęgniarka.
Next, I looked up the word for pain. Ból.
Medicine. Medycyna.
Potato. Ziemniak.
Water. Woda.
Potato seems random, but in my conversation with her son, he said her favorite food was mashed potatoes (mine too!) and that’s what she had ordered for dinner earlier that was still sitting on her table to eat.
When the time came and I entered her room, I found her lying in bed, seemingly bored, but curious as to who I was. I introduced myself as her nurse using the word I had just looked up and she greeted me with a smile.
The next 10-15 minutes after had her and I laughing together as I haphazardly tried communicating with her using broken Polish and hand gestures. You could tell there was a language barrier, but it didn’t stop either of us from getting our point across, and the giggling from us both lightened the mood.
I remember feeding her the mashed potatoes and hearing her go, “Mmmmmmm” as she swallowed them.
I remember her declining the “woda” I kept offering.
Then I remember her clutching at her hip and writhing in pain. That wasn’t a shock considering she was there with a broken hip awaiting surgery, but had to be off her regularly prescribed blood thinners for a while first. I asked if she had pain and she nodded yes. I asked if she wanted pain medicine and she said yes. I gave it to her and watched her settle back down until she began itching her arms motioning to me that she was uncomfortable. I massaged lotion into both of her arms as she sighed of relief and said, “Very good! Very good” taking both of my hands into hers to thank me.
I smiled back and said that she was welcome. Knowing she was feeling better, I went to round on other patients, occasionally peeking in to see how she was doing. After an hour or so, I went back in her room and saw that she had fallen asleep. I fixed her nasal cannula as it had fallen down from her ears and I checked her foley to make sure the tubing wasn’t getting kinked. I made sure she was covered with her blanket so she wouldn’t be cold. Hospitals are always so cold…
I went to another patient’s room. 2 minutes later, one my CNA’s came to me saying they just went in her room and she wasn’t breathing.
What? How?
I just came from there and she had been sleeping peacefully. There were no signs of distress.
What do you mean she isn’t breathing?
I ran to her room. I checked for a pulse. No pulse.
Panic set in. I quickly confirm she’s a full code and my staff and I jumped into action.
One of us got the crash cart. One of us paged for a code. One of us started compressions while the other ambu bagged her.
Suddenly a bunch of staff are at my side as we all fall into our assigned roles.
I remember those compressions I did on her. No one ever talks about the trauma that CPR does to a person’s body…
How the ribs crack like uncooked pasta underneath your hands.
After rounds of CPR, we managed to get a pulse back and transferred her straight to the ICU where she coded again.
We resumed our roles. We must have tried for over 30 minutes.
She wasn’t coming back.
The family (her son and daughter) had been contacted and the doctor called it.
The rest of that night was a blur to me. I had other patients to take care of, so I went back to my unit until the family had arrived and asked to speak with me.
I told them everything that happened from the first moment I walked in to her room. I showed them my chicken scratch notes of the polish words I looked up. I explained that I had no explanation for what could have happened as I saw no signs that she was in danger. And then I broke down crying apologizing profusely feeling like I had completely failed her and them.
Suddenly the son hugged me, then the daughter. They both thanked me for doing what I did for their mother, stating that most people wouldn’t have even taken the time to look up Polish words. Then he said something I’ll never forget. He said she knew her time was coming as earlier that day she mentioned to them both that she would be going “home” soon.
To this day I wish I knew what happened. To this day I try to think about what signs I could have missed. To this day I wonder if I could have done anything differently.
I’ll never forget her, and I think of her often hoping her last moments here provided some bit of love and comfort.

2024.05.14 23:04 KingofFancyMeats Tips for Laserjet Printing?

Hello! I work at a small company and our sales guys also throw together our sales pamphlets and flyers. They definitely aren’t designers but they do their best. Are there any resources out there with suggestions for designing within the limitations of laserjet printers? Like design books that have guidelines for this type of printing? We have a printer that the company uses to print sales material but it’s not great. Some color banding on solid colors, and it doesn’t have the ability to print all the way to the edge of the paper. I suggested that we design our flyers so the margins of the page aren’t as obvious and to minimize large areas of solid color to avoid banding.

2024.05.14 22:55 4N7HR4C173 Webtoon pricing

Hello ! I'm Ash, a french illustrator just starting my business, and I have received a request to draw a webtoon ( sketching, inking, coloring, the bubbles, the whole thing basically except the scenario ), and I was wondering if the prices I'm considering are accurate.
I'm thinking of 1000 $ per chapter, knowing that there will be 40 panels in each chapter, and every panel costs 25$. This would be a 15 to 20 chapters long webtoon so the prices would go from 15 000 $ to 20 000$.
I'll add to that some preproduction costs ( for the character designs per example ) that would range from 647.87 $ to 971.81$.
For the background, I am a new freelancer but I've been drawing for a lot of years and even if this is my first webtoon I've already drawn some comic pages.

2024.05.14 22:41 wh0r3atyahoodotcom AITA for not appreciating my moms gifts

This is such a first world problem to have so I’m sorry 😭 I invited my mom to my college graduation as a peace offering after 3 years no contact. I try to give her grace/bond with her now that I’m older. She asked my friends to find out what I wanted for my grad gift. Since I was moving to a expensive city, I asked for some house things like a good vacuum and a small nespresso. She opted for a necklace. She asked my friends to find out what kind Id prefer. They told her I only wear earrings and that its always silver. They helped her pick some they thought I’d like. She ended up going with a $2500 rose gold necklace they said no to then later dropped off her old vacuum to me. She said she was upgrading and didn’t want to spend unnecessary money on me since she already got me something pricey. I quickly figured out the real reason. It stunk so bad. I’ve cleaned it, changed the filter etc. It my makes my apartment smell like something died so I don’t use it.
For Christmas she asked me what I wanted and again I said Id love a nespresso machine. It’s something I can’t justify buying myself right now but I know I’d use the hell out of it. She gave me another rose gold necklace. This one had to be for a child because it didn’t fit my neck. Also she got herself the upgraded version of the nespresso I wanted which made me feel weird.
I know she likes to gift jewelry so I tried to level with her and mentioned while I really appreciate the gesture, I prefer a silver color so it’ll match more of my things. I asked how she’d feel if I exchanged it for one Id wear more. She said she’d be hurt and that she buys based on what’s cheaper, not what I like. I feel bad because while I understand they’re expensive, I’ve never worn rose gold and I also don’t like having expensive jewelry in my apartment because robberies happen in my area which I’ve told her. So I have accumulated a stinky vacuum, 3 rose gold necklaces, and a diamond tennis bracelet I don’t wear, I’m scared to wear, and have no safe place to store.
I understand they’re expensive and I appreciate the gesture but now that I’m on my own I’d appreciate more useful things. Plus they are cheaper. I’ve tried to communicate that and she’ll say something like I should appreciate the luxuries she generously gives. I’m boggled because I have student loans and medical debts and help with these or some applicances I haven’t been able to afford would spark so much more joy in me. Especially when she asked what I want. It’s not even about the jewelry, it’s like the principle—like she doesn’t understand me. And sometimes I feel she holds the price of these gifts over my head. I feel like such an entitled, ungrateful person for being frustrated by this so lmk if I am actually just being an entitled ass.

2024.05.14 22:30 TheCodebuster Student Loaner Laptop Managment Dashboard

Howdy,
If you know of any other sub-reddits this would do better on, please LMK.
I'm working on a project to create a modern dashboard for managing loaner laptops, and I could use some advice on the best approach. Here's a breakdown of what I'm looking to achieve:
Dashboard UI: I want to create a sleek UI displaying a list of laptops with their names and the student they're assigned to. Each row should be color-coded: green for in, red for out, and yellow for not set up for the next semester. I’d like to also have either an info button or click on the row to get more information. I'm looking at material UI for the icons and buttons.
Laptops: I want to be able to add laptops via a button with information, or to the system via asset tag scanning, making the process quick and efficient.
Check In/Out Page: I need a page where I can easily check laptops in and out. At this point I’d like to have it pull from a “contact page”. But Ideally in the future, this would be connected to a database or LDAP for scanning barcodes of student Id’s or manually typing numbers. This would also be able to scan the asset tag.
Automatic Email Notifications: It would be great if the dashboard could automatically send an email with the student ID # and a template to a specified email address. In the future I would like to have the ability to automatically send reminder emails to the students 2 weeks before they are due.
I'm planning to most likely use React for this project due to its flexibility and ease of use. If you have any tips, suggestions, or resources that could help me achieve these goals, I'd greatly appreciate it! Or if you know of any systems that can do this.
Thanks in advance for your help!

So I have a galaxy s9 coming in the mail tomorrow, I haven't had a tablet in ages. I have literally thousands of pdf coloring pages on my desktop that I usually print to color, but I realized there's probably an app where I can upload these and color them digitally. The problem is I only know of procreate, which is apple exclusive I think.
Any suggestions or tips?
