2024.05.15 07:10 randompersonx United’s new IROPS rules are very poorly implemented

Just as a little bit of background - I am an AA Executive Platinum, and a leisure flyer. I have only been on a handful of United flights over the past decade.
Yesterday/Today I’ve been on an Award Polaris itinerary MCO-IAD-FRA-DRS (final leg on LH).
The trip started out very nice and I thought the lounge at MCO was great - much nicer than American’s at the same airport. I chatted with the staff at the lounge and said I was surprised how nice it was.
It was an overall nice conversation but they said something which foreshadowed what was to come… they said “unfortunately United is making changes which ties our hands to make some things worse. We aren’t allowed to help customers who are having problems anymore, and instead need to give them these cards with QR codes on it if something goes wrong”.
Fast forward a little bit, my flight boards 20 minutes late, and then by the time we are on board, a lightning storm hits and we are deplaned. The flight is delayed by 90 minutes and this puts my IAD-FRA connection in jeopardy.
I went back to the lounge as I didn’t fully process how little they could help - and they just give me the card and apologize.
I try using it. The person on chat says they can’t help me because it’s an Award and tells me to call an 800 number.
I call the 800 number and get an automated system which is completely broken “say yes if you are calling about your flight from MCO-IAD” I try saying yes and pressing 1 a few times and it says “I’m sorry, I can’t hear you, and I’ll be forced to disconnect the call if you don’t respond”. After multiple attempts, I give up.
Fortunately, I found a manager by the gate who was able to secure a backup reservation in case I misconnect. And fortunately we made it just in time for me to run from gate to gate and made the connection… but in any event - disempowering the lounge folks from helping even Polaris customers is really unimaginable.
The flights and lounges were otherwise nice enough that might have considered flying United more often - but there’s no way I would risk being in a place of getting no customer service on an international flight again.

Several weeks ago, I ordered a controller for my sister’s gift from Dareu, and the item ended up stolen. I contacted the seller, and they gave me the local carrier that delivered my item. So, I check in with them and told them the situation.
After that, they followed up with an email after investigating my case. Here it is:

My Life's Journey: Overcoming Challenges

Introduction

My whole life, I've been rejected. People don't see my potential. I've wasted a lot of time in my life. Currently, I have only 40 euros in my bank account. This is one of my darkest moments. Please don't pity me. It's not the fault of others; it's my fault. I make poor decisions every day, and now I am facing the consequences. Sitting in the dark, isolated, without money, I don't enjoy life. But what I have are books and education. Last week, I had only 10 euros in my account. I felt stressed all over my body; I was spending the last 10 euros in the supermarket on basic needs. Not having enough money is horrible, but it is not the end.

Books and Education

Some books about money and teaching yourself to disconnect from everything have helped me enormously. I've learned that stress is an illusion of fear and uncertainty. I've taught myself to be unattached from many things. Consider this: if you love your mother too much, the blow of her death will be too much, making you never function again. So, love your mother, father, etc., but not too much. Do fun things with them, but remember, the circle of life means it comes and goes. Similarly, with money—when I had only 10 euros, I was stressed. I have no job now and am isolated. I've learned that money is an illusion and that you make your own choices to the point where you've ended up. Unfortunately, not everyone gets the same chances in the world.

Life's Unfairness and Moving Forward

That's why I live with the idea that life is unfair, but you can make it a little better. Because every improvement, no matter where you come from, is what everyone wants. Some people are born in countries where opportunities are plentiful; others are not. But ultimately, we must not sit still; acceptance and progress will help you move forward.

My Resolution

I don't need pity; I am a victim of my own choices. The monster inside me has destroyed me as a hopeless, pitiful person. My posture is bad, my bank account is low, and yet, despite all the negatives, a few books and a goal have shown me the light. I am going to take you on a journey of someone who is down but understands that there are many people who are even lower and in war.

My Goal and Challenge

Although I currently don't have money for a gym or luxury courses, I have done some things smartly. I can only tell you, always think 360 degrees. Don't look for one teacher but two. My goal is to become a full-stack programmer and to be a fit human being with good posture—no nerd neck, forward shoulder or hunchback—and of course, healthy food, brain food, gut food, hydration, and muscles. I want to challenge myself and show the world that on this day, May 15th, 2024, this pitiful man who has made many wrong decisions will transform into a beacon of light and perseverance. I am going to show you that an outcast can achieve this. You only live once, and time comes only once. There is only one May 15th, 2024, 6 AM, and once the minute passes, we cannot go back.

Programming Path and Financial Discipline

Now that I am poor, I keep a detailed Excel sheet that monitors my finances and a visual dashboard of my financial life, which currently looks red and very bleak.

Detailed Plan:

  1. **Starting Point:** I managed to get the GitHub Student Pack. Being poor has made me creative. I have found some courses through various means. My path focuses first on HTML, CSS, and Javascript.
  2. **Initial Learning:** I recommend taking notes during lessons, either on pen and paper or a digital tablet. Writing helps you remember more than not doing so.
**The Path:**
  1. Begin with Scrimba.com (From GitHub student, you get 1 month free; because I am poor, I must complete HTML, CSS, and JavaScript in that month, meaning full attention and free days as time is limited in this case).
2 Move on to Advanced CSS by Jonas Schedtmann on Udemy.
3 Then, I will start all over again with Angela Yu's Udemy bootcamp. She explains well and comes from a non-IT technical background, which provides a good perspective.
4.After Angela, I will go to Colt Steele to learn good concepts again and some different tips and tricks.
  1. After Colt Steele, I will go to FrontEndMasters to learn all the professional tips and tricks from people who have actually worked in the industry. I will start with FrontEndMasters last because it is very technical and not really an educational experience. FrontEndMasters is ideal last to professionalize any trained knowledge and possibly unlearn incorrect methods. You get 6 months free with the GitHub Student Pack.
6.After FrontEndMasters, it's time to earn money as a freelancer.
  1. When I have some money, I will access more expensive courses.

You can react, positive and negative that is good balance is good. But I don't want to have my energy in discussions. As I beginner is important to start and don't focus on what other say. I have my teachers team now, and I will let you know, because I believe in balance, if it was a tutorial hell, or have critize on my own plan. So for now I'm offline and will visit this in 60 days.

Think about that, that you will close your eyes and have lived your life through your own shortcomings because you sit defeated.

The game that I'm gonna play most of the times is Asphalt 9. Currently I play this game at windowed mode at lowest graphics at 40 FPS so I'm looking to improve all of these.

(Tried web search, but haven't been able to find consistent and up-to-date information.)
  1. For the ordinary user who is not attempting to develop anything custom for the Mango/Shadow, which of the two devices is "better" and why? Seems most people just pick randomly or by color, given both are identically priced... despite them having completely different chipsets and CPUs. What about VPN speed, connection stability, connection establishment, wifi scanning performance, etc.?
  2. Do both have a stable Onion firmware?
  3. Given the Mango & Shadow are several years old, should I be buying these devices at all in 2024, or are there better, similarly sized alternatives? (Use case: micro sized easy to carry multi-purpose travel Swiss army knife.)
My preliminary guess would be that the Shadow is "better" (given the more open chipset), but I could be totally off, given the firmware situation/support might have changed.

1.New opportunity for workers: The fall of military dictatorship and the rise of Sixth Republic
Until 1987, the labor movement in South Korea was in its infancy, as the brutal right-wing junta unleashed a campaign of terror on anyone who raised their voice about workers' rights. Labor unions were heavily under government control, and democratic unions were limited to female workers in the textile industry. However, the atmosphere changed with the June 1987 Uprising.
Popular discontent was growing among the emerging middle class and college students as the military government refused to hold presidential elections through popular vote. Instead, the junta legitimized their government through an electoral college, denying the majority of the population a say in politics. In this atmosphere of discontent, Park Jong-cheol, a college student activist, was arrested and tortured to death by police, triggering a popular uprising against the military dictatorship.

As popular protests demanding direct election of the presidency and a democratic constitution overwhelmed security forces, the military dictatorship was forced to compromise with the liberal opposition and adopt a new democratic constitution. This gave birth to a more democratic political system known as the 1987 system or Sixth Republic, under which South Korea still operates. This atmosphere of liberalization and democratization provided space for workers to organize.
2. Start of Uprising: Workers in Hyundai organize
The June democratization struggle came to an end with Representative Roh Tae-woo, the presidential candidate of the Junta, announcing the June 29 Declaration and promising a direct presidential election and constitutional reform. However, from July onwards, workers launched vigorous organized actions, demanding the establishment of democratic labor unions, wage increases, and improvements in working conditions.
The July 8-9, 1987 labor struggle began at the Hyundai Group. On July 5, Hyundai Engine workers formed a union, and on July 16, tensions escalated as documents declaring the formation of a labor union by Hyundai Mipo Dockyard workers were confiscated. In response to workers' uprising, the chairman of Hyundai Chung Ju-young declared, "Until dirt gets into my eyes, unions will not be permitted." However, the workers responded, "Then we will put dirt in your eyes," and proceeded to form unions. Even the mighty Hyundai, one of Korea's largest conglomerates, could not resist the relentless tide of history.
In late July, the democratic labor movement expanded to the whole of Yeongnam region, as major factories in the Masan-Changwon area joined the uprising. On August 17th and 18th, over 30,000 workers from the Ulsan Hyundai Group Labor Union (currently Hyundai Motor Union) staged a sit-in protest. Workers from six Hyundai Group affiliates staged a united demonstration while wielding heavy equipment. Faced with protesters wielding heavy equipment, the police abandoned firing tear gas altogether. As the protest ended that day without major bloodshed as police fled in terror, the impact was immeasurable.

Following this raid on Lee Seok-gyu's funeral, the government began a massive crackdown. On September 4th, riot police were deployed to disperse workers protesting at Daewoo Motor and Hyundai Heavy Industries, resulting in large-scale arrests. From September onwards, labor protests in the manufacturing sector gradually subsided. The military junta launched a public relations campaign, accusing workers of being influenced by external forces and attempting to isolate them from wider democratization movement. Employers responded with measures such as temporary closures of workplaces. Despite these efforts, labor activism spread to small and non-manufacturing businesses in the Seoul metropolitan area and Gyeongin region, with strikes continuing in various sectors such as transportation, mining, office work, sales, and services. During the July-August-September labor struggles, workers primarily demanded an 8-hour workday, labor law reform, protection of labor rights, guaranteed freedom to form unions, abolition of blacklists, ensuring the right to survival, improving working conditions, and raising low wages. These demands highlight that the labor struggle was fundamentally an economic democratization movement.
5. Aftermath: Underrated uprising
As a result of the labor struggle, by the end of December 1987, the number of labor unions had increased to 4,103 (from 2,675 in 1986), with 1,267,457 union members (up from 1,035,890 in 1986). Of the 3,749 labor disputes in 1987, 3,341 occurred during July-August-September. Above all, during this period, workers began to perceive labor unions as beneficial organizations for workers and started to understand the ideology and function of labor unions. They also began to explore effective ways to overcome conflicts and confrontations between labor and management. The 1987 labor struggle is considered the first large-scale expression of worker discontent, achieving outcomes such as the formation of democratic labor unions, democratization of non-regular workers' unions, and significant wage increases. This was, of course, one of the political effects of the June Uprising. Workers, who had been suppressed and oppressed by the strong repression of the junta government, began to actively assert their demands in a political environment where some degree of freedom was allowed. Subsequently, this movement for the establishment of labor unions led to the creation of the Korean Teachers and Education Workers Union in 1989, and the National Council of Trade Unions in 1990, setting up the scene for the series of major labor struggles and achievement in 1990s.
Despite these achievements and contribution to the democratization of South Korea, 87 Labor Struggle tends to be underrated and considered merely an epilogue to 1987 democratization. This is because of class divide shown in regard to how it was perceived by the wider democratization movement. The liberal opposition led by Kim Young-sam, urged workers to exercise restraint rather than politically exploiting the situation. This left the resolution of the conflicts to the junta government. Additionally, the middle class distanced themselves from the tlabor struggles. They were concerned that heir achievements from the June Uprising might be undermined. They feared too much chaos could result in counter-coup by the right-wing junta as it had been in 1960-1961 Second Republic and 1980 Seoul spring. Moreover, the June 29 Declaration came during a period of economic boom characterized by low oil prices, low interest rates, and a low dollar value, which lessen the need for the rising middle class to pursue labor movement. As a result, the memory of 87 Labor Struggle was relegated to an auxiliary uprising of larger 1987 democratization, foreshadowing the marginalization of labor still prevalent in modern South Korea.
