Condition (n.b.): All pens listed below have been disassembled, cleaned and restored with new sacs installed in the last couple weeks and seals installed in the last couple years. Each of these pens is guaranteed to fill and write as designed without leaks or other problems. Nibs have been adjusted when necessary to ensure that all lay down a smooth and consistent line.
THESE PENS HAVE NO CRACKS (except #3), CHIPS, PERSONALIZATIONS, LOOSE OR MISSING PARTS, BENT NIBS, MISALIGNED TINES, BROKEN/WORN OFF TIPPING, OR THREADING ISSUES.

Line Widths and Writing Samples: To provide buyers with as much information as possible, I have adopted the following line width standards: XXF (.1-.2mm); XF (approx .3mm); F (approx .4mm); M (approx .6mm); B (approx .8mm). Nib flexibility is determined by variation (max line width under pressure) and softness (amount of pressure). Flexibility designations based on variation generally run as follows for an XF/F nib: Semi-Flex (approx. 1mm); Flex (1.2-1.9mm); Superflex (2mm+). All line width measurements are taken with a digital caliper but should be considered approximations providing a general guide. Width may vary slightly depending on type of ink and paper used as well as amount of pressure applied. All writing samples are on Rhodia dot paper using Waterman Serenity Blue.

1. 1950s Pelikan 400 (Tortoise, celluloid, GPT, piston filler, 14k KM [F/M Ball] nib). This standard-sized model measures 4 15/16” capped. I assume that the Pelikan pen company requires no introduction here :) This is an example of one of Pelikan’s most celebrated vintage pens in tortoiseshell celluloid with transparent striations for viewing the ink level. Classic gold-plated cap band and Pelikan-beak clip. Two-chick Pelikan logo stamped in captop (see DETAIL PHOTO). This pen is a piston filler: to fill simply rotate the blind cap counter-clockwise until the piston is fully extended, submerse the nib, and rotate the piston clockwise until it comes to a stop. Blind cap is stamped KM, corresponding to the ‘M’ marking on the 14k Pelikan nib. The ‘’K’ is for ‘Kugel’ (‘ball), designating this nib as a ball nib, the tipping finished to give it a wider sweet spot for smooth writing at a wide range of angles. Though I wouldn’t call it a flex nib, it does have a springiness and buttery smoothness that’s quite nice. It lays down a smooth and consistent F/M line by the standards above (see WRITING SAMPLE). Condition: fine [C]. I’d describe this pen as more of a user. It’s been fully restored with a new seal and is guaranteed to fill smoothly to factory capacity without leaks. However, there’s an issue with the piston while unscrewing the blind cap all the way that makes the blind cap want to lift up and disengage when the piston is close to fully extended. The solution to this is simple enough: apply a little downward pressure to the piston when unscrewing the blind cap to extend the piston and it works just as it should every time (100% reliable). This has been factored into the price all the same. Barrel transparency is near mint with light yellow coloration and no staining (see DETAIL PHOTO). Gold-plated trim shows brassing to the bottom of the clip and a sliver around the bottom edge of the cap band as well as some nicks to the top edge of the clip tassie. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other notable blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprints are deep and fully legible. A chance to own one of these with superb clarity at less than half the price they fetch on merchant websites. Price: $190 [ON HOLD]

2. 1939-44 Pelikan 100 Wartime (green Binde, celluloid, NPT, piston filler, chromium nickel [CN] steel Oblique F/M-XF Flex nib). This standard-sized model measures 4 5/8” capped. During the material restrictions of WWII, Pelikan made several, short-lived changes to the 100. In place of 14k nibs they implemented Chromium-Nickel steel nibs marked CN. The gold-plated clip was supplanted by nickel-plated (so-called "reverse trim"). And the gold-plated cap bands gave way to no cap bands at all, the cap being either smooth or milled with decorative bands like this example. This wartime model is 100% original and correct, having all these features, including the original nib. It is made of celluloid with a vibrant green marble Binde. Pelikan two-chick logo stamped on the cap top (see DETAIL PHOTO). Barrel underneath is a transparent green for viewing the ink level. This pen is a piston filler: to fill simply rotate the blind cap counter-clockwise until the piston is fully extended, submerse the nib, and rotate the piston clockwise until it comes to a stop. The Pelikan CN nib is a Left-Foot Oblique (iridium is ground in a shape like your left foot viewed from above). Under normal pressure it lays down a smooth and consistent F/M on the cross-strokes and XF line on the down-strokes. And the line widens to a 3B+ (approx 1.9mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Versatile variation and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it a great choice for shaded writing and expressive styles. And the tipping was smoothed by Rick Propas when this pen was restored, making it just as buttery smooth as a Pelikan 14k nib. Condition: near mint [B+]. This pen comes from my personal collection and is the result of hunting the best example I could find. Wartime 100s are rare and this one, which resembles an artifact from a time-capsule, took me decades to track down. Nickel-plated trim is pristine with no brassing or other notable wear. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other noteworthy blemishes. Barrel clarity is superb with no discernible darkening or staining (see DETAIL PHOTO). Manufacturer imprints on the captop are factory deep and even contain most of their original green fill. The only hiccup is that despite being restored 2 years ago by Rick Propas and only being filled 1-2 times since, this pen only fills to half capacity. And this despite the piston operating as smooth as they come. I’ve regreased the pen, but it hasn’t seemed to make a difference. Because this pen is more off a collector-oriented find, I’ve decided to list it anyway. You’d be hard pressed to find another example of this rare piece of Pelikan history in better cosmetic condition. Price: $450

3. 1930s Luxor Visible 5907 (red and translucent web celluloid, NPT, piston filler, 14k Two-Tone XF Super-Flex nib). At 4 7/8" capped, this pen roughly the same length as a Pelikan. Luxor was a German brand of the Hebborn pen company, founded in 1925 by former Kaweco employee Heinrich Hebborn and located in Heidelberg until relocating to Cologne sometime before 1937. In Richard Binder's words: "The company produced pens of high quality, and it was known universally by the name of its signature brand, Luxor, with designs inspired by the aesthetic of ancient Egypt. Sub-brands included Sphinx, Visible, and Grandvisible" (source). The company is credited with having designed the first telescopic piston mechanism, which Montblanc would famously incorporate into its own designs. Despite their high quality, there weren't very many of these pens made and Luxors are especially scarce finds in the US today. This Visible model is made of a stunning red and translucent web celluloid similar to that which Wahl-Eversharp used for the Doric. Unlike the Doric, however, the entire barrel is translucent to show the ink level and piston operation. The cap is also translucent! The celluloid pattern is complemented by nickel-plated clip in an elegant Egyptian motif and triple cap bands with one wider, knurled band. This piston filler holds far more ink than cartridges, converters, and lever fillers of the same size. It is filled by removing the blind cap to reveal the turning knob (see fillers photo), rotating the knob counter-clockwise until the piston is fully extended, submersing the nib, then rotating the knob clockwise until the piston is fully retracted. The pen is equipped with a beautiful 14k two-tone Luxor nib stamped with the pyramidal Luxor trademark. The nib is a Super-Flexible writer, laying down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 4B+ (approx 2.3mm capped) under light pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong snap-back and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it a great choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: excellent+ [B+] aside from a hairline crack in the shank of the nib. The crack can be seen in the photos. It has no effect on the nibs performance or how it writes. And there’s no reason to think it’ll worsen unless the nib and feed are removed and re-installed (something that is only done on vintage pens for repair, not flushing). I’m happy to offer a one-year guarantee (no-questions return for refund) that this crack won’t get any longer. Nickel-plated furniture is remarkably clean, showing no brassing or other notable wear aside from a small spot of brassing on the bottom terminus of the clip. Red color is of an even shade across the cap and barrel. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other notable blemishes – scarcely even any miscroscratches. Barrel clarity is excellent but slightly ambered in comparison to the cap's (see DETAIL PHOTO). Manufacturer imprint on the cap is deep and fully legible. An uncommon and uncommonly eye-catching pen that also happens to be a lovely writer. Price: $290

4. 1940s-50s Oversized Stylomine 303 Retrofit (black, celluloid, NPT, accordion filler converted to twist filler, 14k XXF Needlepoint Wet Noodle nib). This oversized pen is massive, having a thick girth that doesn’t fit all the way into the slots of the slotter box and a capped length of 5 3/8.” Stylomine was a Parisian pen company founded shortly after World War I. Streamlined profile, clip, and font of the imprint exude the aesthetics of midcentury design. This pen is made of black celluloid with tapered ends. Nickel-plated trim in a deluxe configuration includes cool spring-loaded clip with a hallmark ‘Y Z’ on the right side. I wasn’t able to track this down, but it’s possible the clip is either sterling silver or silver-plated. In 1940 the company patented an innovative FP filling system comprised of a rubber sac shaped into a bellows and attached to a glass ink cartridge at the end of the barrel (see fillers photo). Referred to as an accordion filler today, the pen was designed to be filled by removing the blindcap and depressing the glass ink cartridge several times until the cartridge fills with ink. Since accordion sacs are no longer being made, I followed David Nishimura’s advice and restored this pen using a standard tubular sac trimmed at both ends. This essentially converted it into a twist filler so that instead of depressing the glass cartridge one twists it a little over 1 full turn to fill the sac as well as 1/3 to 1/2 of the glass cartridge. Thanks to the size of the pen, this retrofitted solution still allows it to hold about as much ink as a typical lever filler (e.g. Waterman 52). This pen came to me nibless. But I was able to find a serendipitous match in a massive 14k, iridium tipped E.S. Johnson #4 nib stamped ‘303’. This number matches the Stylomine model number on the barrel! Like all my dip pen nib retrofits, the nib and feed were modified to guarantee factory fit, flow, and performance, delivering the best of both centuries. That nib yields Flexible variation with Wet Noodle softness, laying down a smooth and consistent XXF line that widens to a 3B+ (approx 1.8mm) under minimal pressure – i.e. anything more than grazing the page (see WRITING SAMPLE). Don’t be fooled by the max line width. Needlepoint hairlines, effortless variation, surgically responsive snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an ideal choice for calligraphic writing styles such as Copperplate and Spencerian. Condition: excellent+ [B+]. Nickel-plated trim shows no brassing or other notable flaws. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other notable blemishes – scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on barrel is deep and fully legible with ‘Made in France’ slightly weakened. Price: $340

5. 1930s Big Ben (grey shell, celluloid, NPT, piston filler, 14k XF Flex nib). This standard-sized model measures 5 1/16” capped. Big Ben was a trademark of the Benzion Trading Company of Copenhagen, Denmark. The company was founded in 1933 by Niels Benzion, who had worked for the Wahl-Eversharp. A pen of cosmopolitan origins, the Big Ben has a piston-filler patented in England (hence the cap imprint) while the pen was made in collaboration with H. Hebborn & of Heidelberg, Germany. That is why this pen so closely resembles the Luxor above. This particular example is made of celluloid in a grey shell pattern resembling that of a 2nd-gen Eversharp Doric complemented by nickel-plated clip in an elegant Egyptian motif and triple cap bands with one wider, knurled band, and decorative bands at the ends of the cap and barrel. Big Bens came with two different 14k nibs depending on when they were made and for what market: a nib stamped ‘Big Ben’ in cursive font; and a nib stamped ‘1st Quality’ in the same distinctive font. This pen is equipped with the latter. That nib is a Flexible writer, laying down a smooth and consistent XF line that widens to a 3B+ (approx 1.9mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE). Thin hairlines, strong, snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it an excellent choice for expressive and shaded writing. Condition: excellent [B]. Barrel transparency is superb with no staining and a yellow coloration (see DETAIL PHOTO). Nickel-plated trim is clean with no brassing or other notable wear aside from minor high point wear on the clip, a couple spots on the lower cap band that have lost some of their original luster, and thinning of the plating on the blind cap’s thin decorative band. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other notable blemishes - scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on cap is deep and fully legible. Price: $330

6. 1930s Orion Everlasting 552 in Box with Papers (Black and Bronze, celluloid, GPT, lever filler, 14k XXF/XF Flex nib). This standard-sized model measures 5 1/4” capped. Orion was Danish company (located in Copenhagen) that imported quality pen parts from Germany and England and assemble the pens in Denmark. In 1933 they changed their name to Miller Pen Co., a writing instrument importer that exists to this day. This pen comes in its original factory box with exquisite paperwork (see DETAIL PHOTO). It’s made of the same black and Bronze celluloid Conklin used for the Endura, complemented by gold-plated trim with elegant, Art Deco clip stamped ‘Orion’. Flexible 14k Orion #2 nib lays down a smooth and consistent XXF/XF line that widens to a 3B+ (approx 1.8mm) under moderate pressure (see WRITING SAMPLE. )). Thin hairlines, strong, snap-back, and reliable flow over its full range of flex make it another excellent choice for expressive and shaded writing. Condition: excellent [B]. The only noteworthy flaw on this pen is brassing to the center of the clip over the Orion trademark. Trim is otherwise pristine with no noteworthy flaws. Celluloid surface is smooth and lustrous with no deep scratches or other notable blemishes - scarcely even any microscratches. Manufacturer imprint on barrel is deep and fully legible. Price: $240

2024.06.09 18:05 Grand-Tension8668 Understanding Dune's "God" is crucial to understanding Dune.

I still have not read past Children. I'm still currently re-reading it (god I have trouble reading through that book). But I'm still damn confident about what I'm trying to say, here. Maybe it's not authorial intent, but even if it isn't, this line of thinking keeps tying everything together way too well for me to not think about it.
Dune talks about God a whole heck of a lot. If you include appendix "god" shows up something like forty times in the first book. People talk about capital G God, the Jungian Great Mother is a goddess, Paul is called small-g god as Emperor (or at least godhead), as The Preacher he "brings" and "speaks for" the Hand of God, Leto-II declares himself big-G God-Emperor.
All of this god-talk seems to get brushed past, and that's unfortunate, because I'm fairly sure that some of Dune's "railroad to disaster" storylines are governed more by "God" than by prescience itself; God is race consciousness. This goes a long way towards understanding some aspects of Dune that people find strange or weak. Let me explain.
He remained silent, thinking like the seed he was, *thinking with the race consciousness he had first experienced as terrible purpose.* He found that he no longer could hate the Bene Gesserit or the Emperor or even the Harkonnens. They were all caught up in the need of their race to renew its scattered inheritance, to cross and mingle and infuse their bloodlines in a great new pooling of genes. And the race knew only one sure way for this-- the ancient way, the tried and certain way that rolled over everything in it's path: jihad.
Whether race consciousness is just the Jungian collective unconscious or a more literal super-consciousness (I think it's more literally mystic and I'll get to that), the key thing here is that Paul was thinking with the race consciousness. It's worded like it's an instinct within him, same as it is for everybody else, like he's using that "instead of" his brain (not literally, but that's how it's worded). What does the race consciousness want? Jihad. What is literally every character in Dune doing? Railroading towards Jihad, whether they know it or not. The "race consciousness" is doing that, not some sort of prescience-induced predestination.
Sire, Paul thought. The word had such a strange sound when directed at him. Sire had always been his father. He felt himself touched briefly by his powers of prescience, seeing himself *infected* (emphasis mine) by the wild race consciousness that was moving the human universe towards chaos. The vision left him shaken...
I think this passage is easy to misread. Paul's powers of prescience are not race consciousness. He sees, with his prescience, a future in which he is infected by race consciousness. A future in which, like everyone else, he follows it's bidding, which we already know is jihad. Also, note that this is a wild race consciousness. The use of the word wild here is conspicuous because it only shows up in this context, seemingly.
In Chapter 32, Jessica gives herself up to a "demanding memory" and speaks some stuff automatically which the Fremen interpret as a prophetic sign, confirmation that she's the woman their prophecies are about.
Her mind felt as though it had rolled over within her. She recognized the sensation with a quickening of pulse. Nothing in all the Bene Gesserit training carried such a signal of recognition. It could only be the adab, the demanding memory that comes upon you of itself. She gave herself up to it, allowing the words to flow from her... "The fire of God mount over thy heart," she said. And she thought: *Now, it goes in the proper channel.*
The fire of God now goes through the proper channel? Through her, because the memory of that specific scripture came to her unprompted?
Paul took a deep breath, trying to still the tempest within him. His mother's words had locked onto the working of the spice essence, and he had flet her voice rise and fall within him like the shadows of an open fire. Trough it all, he had sensed the edge of cynicism in her--he knew her so well!--But nothing could stop this thing that had begun with a morsel of food. *Terrible purpose!* He sensed it, the race consciousness that he could not escape...
Jessica had a "holy spirit" moment. Paul, having just ate a load of spice, was prepared to actively notice that her words, which she characterized as the Fire of God, "activated" the terrible purpose, the race consciousness within him, even though both of them were cynical about what was occurring. (I should note that Paul also discovers, moments later, the fact that his looking into the future actively messes with it, a key idea for Messiah IMO.)
Another moment where Paul considers the unstoppable race consciousness in chapter 34:
Somewhere ahead of him on this path, the fanatic hoards cut their gory path across the universe in his name. The green and black Atreides banner would become a symbol of terror. Wild legions would charge into battle screaming their war cry: "Muad'Dib!" It must not be, he thought. I cannot let it happen. But he could feel the demanding race consciousness within him, his own terrible purpose, and he knew that no small thing could defeat the juggernaut... If he died this instant, the thing would go on through his mother and his unborn sister. Nothing less than the deaths of all the troop gathered here and now... could stop the thing.
The race consciousness of humanity has concentrated all of it's efforts on creating Paul (which becomes more clear later). So Paul, and anyone sufficiently close to him, is carrying this "terrible purpose" humanity's race consciousness has prepared him for. It could be said that they're all already "infected" by it. Maybe Paul is too, but can't really see it in himself? Certainly what I think, see here.
In Chapter 40 Paul specifically considers that the "terrible purpose" of humanity's race consciousness is the most constant thing between his visions and reality, it never changes.
The differences in the ways he comprehended the universe haunted him-- accuracy matched with inaccuracy. He saw it in situ. Yet, when it was born, when it came into the pressures of reality, the now had it's own life and grew with it's own subtle differences. Terrible purpose remained. Race consciousness remained. And over all loomed the jihad, bloody and wild.
Finally, the most memorable passage in Dune in it's final chapter is all about this inevitability:
he sampled the time-winds, sensing the turmoil, the storm nexus that now focused on this moment place. Even the faint gaps were closed now. Here was reason enough (emphasis mine) for a Kwisatz Haderach or a Lisan al-Gaib or even the halting schemes of the Bene Gesserit. The race of humans had felt it's own dormancy, sensed itself grown stale and knew now only the need to experience turmoil in which the genes would mingle and the strong new mixtures survive. All humans were alive as an unconscious single organism in this moment, experiencing a kind of sexual heat that cold overcome any barrier. And Paul saw how futile were any efforts of his to change any smallest bit of this. He had thought to opposed the Jihad within himself, but the jihad would be.
Finally, Herbert directly states what the race consciousness of humanity wants. It wants it's war, because it's convinced that war increases humanity's genetic fitness. And that isn't just within other people, it's in Paul, too, and he couldn't oppose it, even within himself.
Note that even "the halting schemes of the Bene Gesserit" are listed as a puppet of race consciousness _alongside_ the Kwisatz Haderach rather than them being it's true source. That idea is brought to fruition in Appendix III: Report on Bene Gesserit motives and purposes. In that appendix, it's rightly asserted that the BG's actions (or lack of action) regarding the Arrakis Affair were _shockingly_ incompetent. The author of that appendix concludes this way:
In the face of these facts, one is led to the inescapable conclusion that the inefficient Bene Gesserit behavior in this affair was a product of an even higher plan of which they were completely unaware!
Higher plans? Plans from on high? Like... God's plan? Like the Fire of God briefly channeled through Jessica. It has already been stated several times that the Bene Gesserit are puppets of race consciousness. In Dune, race consciousness is God.
"The Fremen will have the word of Muad'Dib," Paul said. "There will be flowing water here open to the sky and green oases rich with good things. But we have the spice to think of, too. There will always be desert on Arrakis... and fierce winds, and trials to toughen a man. We Fremen have a saying: 'God created Arrakis to train the faithful.' One cannot go against the word of God."
Paul is thoroughly convinced that race consciousness has locked the jihad in place. It can't be stopped. And now he says that the Fremen will be trained for war on Arrakis, like the Sardaukar, because "one cannot go against the word of God". Once again, race consciousness is God.
You know how people sometimes question why the heck the Fremen went through with the Jihad? Like, what actually possessed them to do that? What in their religion or what rationale suggested to them that they should go wipe out dozens of planets? It seems absurd for the same reason the BG's actions seem absurd when they're considered closely. They're acting on animal instinct, and animal instinct had a plan.
Dune: Messiah has slightly less to say about God, but it's still got something to say. It seems conspicuous to me that capital G God is brought up less now that Paul's terrible purpose has been carried out. It's got less to influence, now.
"There exists no separation between gods and men; one blends softly casual into the other. --*PROVERBS OF MUAD'DIB
Paul's words. Men bleed into gods and vice-versa... because it's just a matter of how much sway they have in humanity's race-consciousness.
"I'm a figurehead. When godhead's given, that's the one thing the so-called god no longer controls." A bitter laugh shook through him.
Within Fremen religion Paul's seen as the "godhead". Godhead is an idea common to spiritual systems where everything is on some level divine-- the godhead is the point from which all else emanates, or _is concentrated._ Race consciousness was concentrated in Paul as the Kwisatz Haderach.
I never wanted to be a god, he thought. I wanted only to disappear like a jewel of trace dew caught by the morning. I wanted to escape the angls and the damned--alone...as though by an oversight.
Paul does see himself as a sort of god. It's a role that has been thrust upon him, and it's noted that there are less gods than there used to be. But he is not capital G God.
You know who _IS_ capital G God? Motherfucking God-Emperor Leto II Atreides. I am aware that he is literally referred to as God, and that his Golden Path, his method of avoiding Krazilec, involves effectively shepherding humanity's overall thought-process and instincts. A good chunk of Children of Dune is about Leto learning to control his own ego-memories, and he finds Harum.
Leto's awareness floated free, no objective psyche to compensate for consciousness, no barriers. Namri's "provisional future" remained lightly in his memory, but it shared awareness with many futures. And in this shattering awareness, all of his past, every inner life became his own. With the help of the greatest within him, he dominated. They were his. He thought: When you study an object from a distance, only it's principle may be seen. He had achieved the distance necessary and he could see his own life now: the multi-past and its memories were his burden, his joy, and his necessity. But the worm trip had added another dimension and his father no longer stood guard within him because the need no longer existed. Leto saw through the distances clearly-- past and present. And the past presented him with an ultimate ancestor-- one who was called Harum and without whom the distant future would not be. These clear distances provided new principles, new dimensions of sharing. Whichever life he now chose, he'd live it out in an autonomous sphere of mass experience, a trail of lives so convoluted that no single lifetime could count the generations of it. Aroused, this mass experience held the power to subdue his selfdom. It could make itself felt upon an individual, a nation, a society or an entire civilization.
Leto lives his life as an "autonomous sphere of mass experience" which could dominate not only his personal selfdom, but a "nation, society or an entire civilization". Paul certainly couldn't do that, he knew he couldn't do it because race consciousness ruled. Considering where Leto II's newfound enlightenment(?) leads, it seems safe to say that he became something no human had ever been before. It's like he's wrangled so much of humanity's past in his head and actually mastered it that he's the majority stakeholder of race consciousness, he holds the reigns now. And so he calls himself God.
It's sometimes asked why Herbert wrote God-Emperor, because it seems to contradict Herbert's own earlier warnings about Paul. I suspect that this is the distinction. Paul was human and ultimately subject to human flaws and instincts, in fact he was created by human flaws and instincts, which is a pretty good description of most dictators, other people prop them up. Leto, though, isn't burdened by these things. He is no longer controlled by race-consciousness, so he can be a true philosopher-king. Herbert can therefore explore how he thinks a "perfect human" who has mastered their instincts might rule.
...Oh also, as far as race-consciousness only being a Jungian collective unconscious, all I have to ask is if that's the case, why are people in these books inserting themselves into the consciousness of other people? Particularly Paul's assertion that if the Reverend Mother "looks in that place she dare not look", she'll see him. That's not _just_ genetic memories. And in the same scene, Alia effectively uses this to communicate with the Reverend Mother, who is convinced that Alia really, really shouldn't be there, like it's an unnatural aberration. Explicitly stated to not be "TP" (telepathy), exactly.

Why does my image resolution gets worse throughout animation?
I'm using this Google Colab Notebook: https://colab.research.google.com/github/deforum-art/deforum-stable-diffusion/blob/main/Deforum_Stable_Diffusion.ipynb#scrollTo=XVzhbmizWM_u
My animation starts alright, but after a few images the quality gets pretty bad and the contrast gets very high. I guess it has to do with my animation settings, anyone have a clue what I can change to keep quality and colors coherent throughout the animation?

2024.06.08 21:31 TOP_TIER Competitive Consensus: Thena

Intro

This thread is a discussion series at the tail end of the week for each newly introduced Spotlight card. This gives us nearly a week of hindsight to build a consensus and help inform players if they should open their caches for a given week. Ideally, we are looking for proven results (which can understandably be difficult to achieve in a week) more than theoretical applications to help reach this consensus, so players know what becomes less accessible to them after the Spotlight rotation.

This week's card: Thena

Energy: 2
Power: 1
After each turn, +3 Power if you played (exactly) 2 cards.

Background, High-level Strategy, and Use Cases

Thena is the first Spotlight card of The Celestials' Finest season, and there's no doubt you've encountered this strong, new contender this week. Thena joins the class of scaling 2-costs with absurdly high ceilings when built around, such as Morbius, Dagger, and -- as we'll explore further -- Angela. There was little hype around Thena as the community evaluated the upcoming cards this season, but she has already found her way into the best deck. Let's break down how she earned this position.
Maximizing Thena involves fulfilling her condition on turns 3, 4, 5, and 6, increasing her power to 4, 7, 10, and finally 13. Leveling up Thena once makes her a 2/4 with no utility; an embarrassing card. At her second level of 7 power, she is already in elite territory for 2-costs, above any printed stats like Maximus or Lizard, and only matched by the other scaling cards previously mentioned. At her third level, with 10 power, this usually costs 5 for elite stats, i.e. Doc Oc, and above other premium cards like Vision and Cannonball (who offer more than stats, of course). At her final level of 13 power, this beats most elite 6-costs, sitting just above Magneto and just below Giganto.
Scaling from simply playing other cards is a staple of several Snap archetypes, but Thena compares favorably to most of them. Bishop is an example of this; he costs 1 more, which costs a turn of scaling, and he gets only 1 point per card, albeit unconditionally. Thena gets 1.5 points per card when her exact condition is fulfilled. Using the above growth progression as a guide, it would take a whopping 12 cards (remind me how many cards are in a deck again?) from only 15 energy to get Bishop to match Thena's 13 power on turn 6. Other cards in this category include Hit-Monkey, who gets +2 power per card (but only on the same turn), and Angela, who also gets +2 power per card (in her lane).
There is a cost to Thena's absurd rate, which is the requirement that you do not play "on curve"; this means you don't play a 3-cost on turn 3, 4-cost on turn 4, and so on. This deckbuilding requirement will limit the number of decks she where she can be included. She's at home in these "small-ball" decks that get most of their points from cheap cards like Kitty and Angela, but Thena can be awkward even in small card-focused decks like Loki, which would want to play Cable/Coulson/Loki on curve. This is a real cost, it's just not very apparent at the moment in this metagame that was already centered around Kitty+Angela decks prior to her release.
The decklists below are a reflection of the current metagame, which is not terribly diverse. They all feature Kitty and Angela, which were the best cards before Thena, and are even better paired with Thena. This strategy is perfect due to Kitty's ask that you play "a turn behind" to invest an energy into playing her each turn, which you'll naturally play on the Angela lane. When combined with Hope Summers, this requirement is effectively free. There are also many Ravonna "the new Zabu" Renslayer decks below, due to her synergy with Thena and Angela.
The last feature worth of Thena worth mentioning in this metagame is her dynamic with Professor X: She's a great deterrent for opposing X's because she can continue to add points to that lane, effectively acting as an Echo against him; for the same reason, she's also valuable with your own X, drastically reducing the risk of locking yourself in a losing lane when she still has the potential to grow.
Overall, Thena is one of the best-rate 2-cost cards ever seen, but is partially a symptom of other parts of the current metagame. She's in the best version of the best deck, but the best deck can change quickly in Snap's ecosystem.

Sample Decklists

  1. 3 "stock" Kitty+Angela lists with breakdown
  2. Mysterio X/Ball
  3. Alioth Tech X/Ball
  4. Namora Movers
  5. Gilgamesh Evo
  6. Gilgamesh Guardians
These decklists come from a variety of sources but generally the top 1k of ladder; some are more proven than others.

What's your verdict?

Is Thena worth the key(s) now, or should players wait until a future Spotlight rotation?
Is Thena here to stay, or just the flavor of the week?

2024.06.08 16:07 LoudWhaleNoises Tried a bunch of shitty ideas so you don't have to

Naga Soft-Support:
I usually test her on every single patch. Got 75 games on her in support and some in offlane role at 42% winrate. Picking her is basically soft-griefing. I think she's actually in a worse state since all other heroes are 15% stronger and Naga's Deluge is basically a sidegrade to Rip Tide.
Deluge facet is ok now, you can sustain it after the B-letter patch with a null talisman. Her ult together with shard is absolutely cracked as a save, but unfortunately it comes with a 140s cooldown. It's also too easy to grief your team unintentionally or even if you use it correctly they will still flame you. People get tilted regardless of how you use it really.
I've seen people talk about using Ensnare and Deluge in lane, but you should always skill Illusions for lane. Illusions are way too good to pass up. I'll leave this example right here just to illustrate how obnoxious illusions are at bodyblocking and you can shave off big chunks of HP if they don't respect you. It's a multifaceted tool for dragging, blocking, trapping, killing couriers under tower, you can block the wave for your mid, deny runes, scouting. Heck you can stack 4 camps with illusions. Creativity is the ceiling with illusions.
Deluge Build: Null > Treads > Rod > (Shard) > Aghanim. You still need some right-click to clear waves after using Deluge and Treads is the most efficient item to do that.
Rip Tide Build: Null > Brown Boots > Diffusal > Dagger > (Shard). You can slap in an Orchid if you want.
I'm not saying these are the best builds, but it's the best ones i've found because who even plays her as a supp? Items is the problem, there simply aren't any 1500-2000 gold items for agi supports. So you're looking at an item pool of: diffusal, orchid, rod, shard, dagger. Aghs is too expensive in most games. Meteor used to be good on her when it was 2500, but now it's 3500.
Overall the main problem hindering her as a support will always be her abysmal damage contribution. You can see it here, where even in a game i won my contribution is miniscule. So i seriously doubt she'll ever really be viable unless she gets free damage somehow. She does have some story as a support/jungler with Aui playing her in the past. It is possible to play her jungle lvl 1 now (match ex), someone griefed me when i was playing offlane doing this. If you can somehow play suicide lane 1v2 i wouldn't call it bad, but it's not suited to pub game climate.
Of naga's alternative playstyles level 1 jungling seems like the most interesting options.
Rating: F-tier - not recommended unless you like losing MMR. Good counterpick vs Disruptor only.
.
Sven Soft-Support:
The barrier facet is strong, very strong, but it doesn't really change that much when Sven is a god awful support to begin with. Maxing warcry is a no-brainer. The rest of his kit is just bad though. Stun's too short, cleave does nothing until later on and ult is too weak at lvl 6 for a hero without items. I've maintained an even streak of 6W - 5L (ranked games only). Even if this is a nice w/r stat, I'm playing below my regular MMR and when i play other heroes the games feel free, where as Sven is like an uphill battle.
Items: Mek/Crest/Shard/Vlad/Drums - Stacking a bunch of dirtcheap survival items seems to be best on him. Later into the game i think Armlet is good if you need damage, as you only use ult in several small 5 second windows and because of that the drain doesn't matter.
Overall great against purely physical drafts, but if the enemy mid is magical, Warcry barrier is so bad.
Rating: E-tier - playable, but not good. Has a strong niche vs physical.
,
Terrorblade Soft-Support:
Zapping people down to 1 HP with Condemned sounds like a lot of fun, but it's clunky as hell to play. And sometimes you'll wander randomly into things that one-tap you while at low hp. For me one of those things was tormentor aura lol. The items you want are too expensive and overall it feels like planets need to align for this kind of strategy to work. From my experience immortal games are too fast paced for you to afford any of the items you want (armlet, dagger, dagon, shadowblade, etc)
I think the better play is to just play TB support like we did a few patches back with drums, treads, (yasha), orchid, vlads and other utility items. Then slowly transition into cheese as the game progresses.
Rating: D-tier - The hero is at least viable if you just build him like normal utility support.
.
Jakiro Soft-Support /w Diffusal:
No yeah this is just bad. Kept thinking to myself, "i could have dealt more damage and done more just by being alive if i had save items". The hero is not boasting a huge winrate in the first place either.
Rating: F-tier
.
Void Soft-Support - Timezone:
Tried one game, MoM, Treads, Drums, Dagger.
Main issues: Can't farm at all, you have no wave shove. MoM is nowhere fast enough to farm with.
The ult might be good, but 1 good spell doesn't make 1 hero good.
There is also this joke, it gave me a good laugh.
Rating: F-tier
.
Underlord Offlane - Right-Clicker Cleave
So this is perhaps the best build i've found and it's pretty straight forward. Cleave facet with Mask of Madness. Pit lvl 1, aggro a lot and fuck with the enemy's right-clicks if they are melee. Pit gives you a lot of free hits as they have to choose to contest last hits or not get hit. Max atrophy. Wether you want to go Pit or Firestorm doesn't really matter, though Pit doesn't scale well. Cleave from aura will be faster for farming than Firestorm so just use that and save your mana. You only need 50+ stacks to really get rolling. I mostly use Firestorm to stack with.
The build is simple Bracer(s) > Treads/Phase > Mask of Madness. Anything else is up to you. MoM's usefullness will wear off eventually so just dissassemble it for some other items.
You get sustain, the right-click can range anywhere from 200 to 500 atk dmg and the cleave aoe is screenwide (This is right after MoM). You can clear ancient stacks with a few stacks.
Ideally you have some teamates that can start fights first or doesn't mind getting initiated upon like Lifestealer, Morph, etc. This is so you can always maintain high aura stack count and just ULT right on top of the enemy team with like 300-400 dmg just start cleaving away. If this is not the case, then itemize as if you would get initiated upon.
It's usually best to buy standard Underlord items after MoM. As there is a major con to continuing down the right-click path. If your team is starting to lose, it gets harder and harder to maintain high base atk as you have less space to work with. Right-clicking is also more investment heavy than say Auras+Firestorm items because anti-kite gear like BKB, Aghs and Harpoon cost more.
I tried carry Underlord, but it doesn't work because you get kited and Atrophy stack dmg is too variable.
Rating: A to C - honestly have no idea because sample size too low and i don't generally play the hero, but the farmspeed feels incredible.
.
Lina Magic Soft-Support
Lina support is not new, but she's been in a bad spot for almost 4 years after Fiery Soul changes. I felt like she was back in 7.35. So i kinda just want to put it out there that she's good again. The burning facet is a no-brainer, it's just more damage. As the map is larger, there are more creeps (this is your sweetspot), supports are actually allowed to farm now and she's good at taking advantage of that. Her item pool also has strong items like: eul, crest, lens, null talisman, dagger, shadowblade, shard. Her counters are also almost non-existent save for Nighstalker and maybe Nyx.
Skills: Stun lvl 1 > Dragonslave max > A Value point in Fiery Soul for farm purposes.
Item Build: (x2Branches, Nade, Faerie Fire, x2 tangos, circlet) > Manaboots+Wand > Eul/Lens > (Shard) > Crest > Aghs/Hex
You have almost infinite sustain if you just backpack eul and crest before using manaboots.
Shadowblade is also a strong consideration if you lack initiators and have something like Dark Seer or SK who want to follow up rather than lead in. Think of it as a scouting item, the duration is long that you can just walk in and linger in farm spots.
Gameplay is easy, right-click non-stop in lane (ex), from max range. Stun when carry tries to last hit. Wins every single lane as long as you respect your own limits and don't stray too far from your offlaner. You effectively repress the enemy's ability to play offensively, giving your offlaner (whatever shitty pick it might be) a good lane. Doesn't matter if they have LS vs your Pudge, you will win lane. Same for fights, throw spells and back off when on cooldowns. Eul, crest and passive makes you both fast and deceptively hard to kill. Io lanes are the only ones where you should leave lane and go make stack for yourself or someone else. Lina is terrible at rotating, but she's so good at pressuring that rotations usually come your way instead.
Rating: B-tier
.
.
Here's my Dotabuff https://www.dotabuff.com/players/19696934, usually hang around 5.900 MMR. I have burned around 500-800 MMR playtesting various shit like in this thread.

2024.06.08 01:02 HFY_Inspired The Prophecy of the End - Chapter 30

Chapter 30 - Interlopers
Previous Chapter
“Okay, you’re SURE this won’t be permanent?” Trix tried to turn her head to look at the computer console as the two other women worked behind her back.
“Sure we’re sure. It won’t wash out with water but we have a solvent on hand that’ll nullify the dye. Makes it completely clear. Technically still present but invisible.” Min swiped a finger up the side of Trix’s head. The computer instantly changed. “YES! Yellow along the sides, and red up top. That’s PERFECT.”
“Hold your wings out to the side, feathers.” Ma’et gazed down at the pattern and arrangement of the feathers on the wing. “Yeah, definitely. Make the wings match the hair. Or, uh, head feathers. Whatever it’s called. Red along these big whatchamacallums. Yellow above. And when her wingtip controls finish fabbing, the silver will look amazing next to it.”
“She really ought to have earrings too.” Min glanced at each of the long, elf-life ears tipped with small, fine feathers. “We could do some really intricate patterns with ears that long.”
Ma’et glanced up there and shook her head. “It’d look great but I’m not touching any piercings without Josh. No way I want to find out they have arteries up there the hard way.”
The computer image was shifting rapidly as they spat out ideas, but since Min and Ma’et wouldn’t let her see she had to be content with their descriptions. “I’m just a little nervous about this. I really, really don’t want to have to pull those feathers later.”
Ma’et put her hands on either side of Trix’s head, tilting it slightly as she watched the computer image changing. “Don’t you guys dye your feathers back on Kiveyt?”
“Sure. We have both impermanent and permanent dyes.” Trix fought the urge to swat away the hands that were moving her head around. “Impermanent dyes wash out with water. Permanent ones don’t. Only way to undo those is to pull the feathers out entirely, which is both painful and embarrassing until they regrow.”
Min was putting on plastic gloves as she adjusted the dye solution to match the colors on the screen. “Do your feathers ever just fall out by themselves? On Earth, birds lose feathers over time as they get replaced. ”
“Healthy feathers don’t fall out, no. They can be pulled out but it isn’t pleasant. Damaged feathers will fall out on their own.” Trix lifted up her arm and placed a finger under one of her feathers to lift it up. “Actually there was a big trend thirty years ago to trim the vanes of each feather into various patterns. But that had the same problem as dyeing the feathers, where if you wanted to undo it you had to pull the trimmed feathers out.”
Min and Ma’et shared a glance at that. “Should we consider…” Min began, before Ma’et cut her off. “Nope. Solvent will clear the dye but it won’t undo a trim.”
Min nodded and picked up a series of plastic strips. Each strip was placed under a line of feathers on Trix’s head to separate out each line of feathers along the group, to ensure that no dye would leak onto other feathers.
Ma’et put on gloves of her own and picked up a small detailing brush. “You know, we really ought to have asked Alex to join us.”
Trix fought to keep her head still. She’d been warned what might happen if she moved too much, and she had no desire at all to make an already lengthy process take even longer. “Why’s that? Do we need his approval for something like this?”
“Nope.” Min lifted up her brush and began to carefully brush the solution over the feathers just above Trix’s forehead. “He’s just really, really good at it. He actually taught the both of us how to do dye our hair.”
Ma’et nodded, as she joined in brushing the red dye along the plastic line at the front. “He won’t tell us why, but I had some issues doing it myself at first. It was really uneven, I’d get dye everywhere, it was a mess. He taught me how to make it even and clean. Hell, if Min’s busy or something I still make him dye my hair.”
Trix began to turn her head out of habit, but was stopped by a strong hand against her temple. “Red isn’t natural for you?”
“This shade of Red isn’t natural for any humans. Natural redheads are a lot closer to a brown than mine.” Ma’et swiped her fingers against a towel, and dipped the brush back into the solution. “There are treatments that can make dyes like mine permanent so our hair always grows with this color, but I like being able to change it up. When we’re done I’ll show you some of the photos I’ve taken with different styles and colors.”
“When we’re done. How long will that take?” Irritation tinged her voice as Trix struggled to fight it down.
“Sorry, feathers. But we’re still looking at another hour or so, minimum. The solution dries fast though, so by the time we’re done with your wings your head will be ready for brushing.” Ma’et lifted the uppermost plastic to begin on the layer below it. “Bear with us while we work, will ya?”
“Fine, fine.” Trix took a very slow breath trying to stay as still as possible. “Now what were you saying before about piercings?”
“It’s a fashion thing back on earth. You have metal studs put through your ears to…”
—--
Alex shoved a spoonful of cereal into his mouth absentmindedly as his eyes scanned down the quickboard. The latest survey data here at Point 3 was more disappointing than he’d hoped. The mineral content was high but much of it was in the form of metallic salts and various alloys that would be much, much more work to separate and extract into pure forms than free elements. It would still be worth the effort of doing so, but since the asteroids in Point 2 had similar composition minus the alloys, extracting from that first would be greatly preferred.
He was going over some of the math in his head when a bright, colorful apparition walked through the door.
His spoon froze two inches from his mouth as his eyes flicked up to the resident Avian. The feathers along her head crest had been dyed a brilliant crimson, with orange and yellow bordering them - making the crest distinct and almost hair-like from the rest of her plumage. In addition the large feathers of her wings were dyed similarly, with brilliant red along the large feathers on the bottom of the wings, shifting to orange and yellow above.
It took a few moments for Alex’s mental gears to shift properly but before he did, Trix had walked over to the food dispenser. She walked back to the table with a plate of toast and eggs, raising an eyebrow as she looked at the Captain. “Problem, babe?”
If the sudden change in appearance hadn’t caught Alex entirely offguard, the sudden vernacular would have. The spoon clattered down into the bowl as his fingers relaxed with the surprise, the sound shaking him loose of the sudden surprise. “Trix, where did you hear that?”
Trix sat down, putting an egg on her toast and covering it with entirely too much tabasco sauce. “Min and Ji say it all the time. They always say it’s a joke. Why?”
“Uhm. Okay, well… it’s sort of an extremely familiar greeting. Like… ah, sort of sometimes used with...” Alex fumbled for words and eventually gave up. “Par, help me out here.”
“Certainly. Trksehn, while the word can be used informally between very close friends it’s also known to be used between even closer relationships, such as lovers or family. Using the designation of ‘babe’ often carries connotations of interest as well; often designating attractiveness to the subject.”
Trix nearly dropped her toast as she glanced over the captain with mortification on her face as she absorbed what she just heard. “Oh, uh… I knew it was a joke and I didn’t realize, so…”
Alex shook his head, reaching over to grab a napkin to mop up the milk he’d spilled when he dropped his spoon. “No worries. I’m not offended. Just, ah, you might want to run those little jokes past Min before using them on the rest of the crew.”
Trix nodded, and took a big bite out of the toast. After chewing briefly, she swallowed and looked a bit guilty. “Sorry again. I didn’t really know what it meant. Ji and Min always thought it was hilarious when I said it, so…”
Alex waved it off. “No need to explain. I know those two well enough to know how they are.” He picked up the spoon and crunched down on another mouthful of cereal, before pointing it towards Trix. “Mrph, Thrm Eye…” He swallowed heavily. “Sorry. So that Dye job?”
Trix grinned and spread her wings wide, showing off the colors. “Ma’et says I’m a natural redhead, so they went with bright and fiery. What do you think?”
“It suits you incredibly wel! I’m assuming they used triethylaminete? I wouldn’t normally ask, but I have no idea what Kyshe will think of it and I promised not one feather damaged….” Alex glanced over the large, brilliantly-dyed feathers somewhat trepidatiously.
“I have no idea. Min and Ma’et could tell you. They did say they had something they could put on to make it clear if I don’t like it.” Trix reached over to brush her fingers over one of the scarlet-hued feathers. “I asked like, six times.”
“Probably was then. I think it looks great, but obviously I’m not the one you’re interested in impressing. It’ll be interesting to see the reactions back on Kiveyt.” Alex finished off the cereal rapidly and pushed the bowl aside. He keyed in a sequence into the pad. “Josh, go ahead and start the recall on the salvage ‘bot. I’ve seen all I want to see here. Drop a beacon and let’s get packed up. Trix should be up to the bridge in like, fourty-five. Let’s try to get underway to Point 1 within 30 of her arriving.”
Trix finished off the first piece of toast, and was coating the second egg with tabasco as she looked up. “Weren’t we planning to be here for a few more days?”
“Yeah, but the core samples are making it pretty clear that this place isn’t worth our time. I’d rather get started on the big money items.” He turned back to the face on the quickboard. “Any issues with that?”
Josh was already entering in the commands to halt the core sampling process, and detach the bot from the most valuable asteroid present. “No issues here. If you want to leave that fast, though, we’ll have to leave the tap here.”
“That’s fine, we have enough scrap on board to fab a new one long before we arrive. I’m going to tell ‘Manda about the change in plans. Let me know if anything comes up.” Josh simply nodded in response, and the screen blanked out.
Alex tapped a couple more times on the quickboard. “Amanda, I know you’re asleep right now so I’m just going to leave this message. I’m sure you’ve noticed but Point 3 ain’t worth the time compared to 2 so we’re taking off early. Get started on whatever you can identify from here on out, but I want a rundown of the biggest money we can fit in the hold within a day. We’ll have Trix get some experience splitting rocks, just to liven things up. Let me know if there’s any issues with the plan.”
He tapped the end button, and turned to Trix. “Any questions, Pilot?”
“Just one. What do you mean by splitting rocks?” Trix finished off the second piece of toast and began wolfing down a third.
“Well, the ship ain’t very big. The biggest and richest asteroids out there would dwarf us, and moving them is a headache. We can’t take them through d-space without expensive external shielding we don’t have, so we’re going to have to break off great big chunks in order to grab ‘em and stuff ‘em in the hold. We do that with the salvage bot’s drill and some very carefully placed explosives. You had fun shooting shit out in space, I figured maybe blowing shit up then chasing down and grabbing them with the shuttle might pique your interest as well.”
“You know, that actually does sound like it might be right up my alley…” Trix grinned. “It’s been weeks since Farscope and I wouldn’t mind taking the shuttle out for a spin.”
“Perfect. Ma’et’s got experience with that so we’ll pair you two up for shifts once we reach Point 1.” Alex stood up and lifted the quickboard up, tapping it on his shoulder. “I’m going to start making arrangements for that. Josh’ll handle any other questions you have, but call me if anything he can’t answer comes up.”

The bridge of the Dreadnought ‘Calamity’ was dead silent, save the ever-present barely audible hum of the ventilation systems that made life possible in the infinite inky void of space and the soft tapping of fingers against control consoles. Captain Nathaniel Wessex sat in the command chair of the gargantuan ship, waiting patiently. Despite the nervousness and tension among his crew, his face was a mask of calm.
Underneath the mask, where none could see, where he hid his emotions he railed against the politicians for choosing him for this assignment.
Sending a dreadnought on a diplomatic mission was about as far from typical as it gets. Dreadnoughts were annihilation made manifest, the sort of thing you send to strike terror into your enemies. Every single meter of deckplate, every single kilometer of cable within the ship was designed and built around a single purpose : Destruction. On a scale never before seen in the days of blue-water ships making their way via sail or propeller across the vast waves of earth.
Yet every argument against the deployment by the captain himself, his superiors in the navy, and even many in the government were dismissed. First contact had been made and the polities of both Sol and Proxima were in utter chaos. The border disputes, the tension over Keplite, the endless posturing by each side had crashed down in the space of hours. Now the tension was entirely over whether or not one side or the other would pull off a coup with these new species, and whether or not the known hostile races would interrupt the diplomacy. Each side was eager to impress and terrified about the unknown, necessitating his ship’s presence.
Rumor had it that Proxima had known for well over a month about the discovery, and was negotiating with Sol about making an official trip to the Perseus arm of the galaxy to meet with the new species there. Whether or not they believed it at first, once the emergency beacon from the Arcadia had arrived everything changed. The full data dump had immediately been sent to Sol and with it, the two sides had come together faster than imaginable for their own goals. Proxima, leveraging the information as a means to ensure peace. Sol, attempting to ensure that Proxima would not attempt to represent humanity without equal opportunity to be involved.
The diplomatic mission was put together in mere hours and his ship was tapped for it nearly from the get go.
And now as he stood ready to serve his military, his country, his species he fought desperately not to let his emotions show as the colossal hulk of the Sol Dreadnought ‘Imperium’ sat there, a scant ten thousand kilometers from him. A week ago they’d be warming up weapons, loading missile launch bays, and Damage Control units (along with the inevitable medical corpsmen) would be prepping to race across the ship wherever needed. Now both ships were present for something other than fighting, a deeply unnatural feeling.
On the bridge he was secure, of course. A Dreadnought’s armor and shielding were unmatched, and even if his opponent was as heavily armed and armored as he was they could withstand an incredible amount of punishment. More than enough to be able to retaliate in kind. The thought that any aggression would result in mutual destruction of the two vessels, however, was anything but calming.
“Any word from the Sol delegates?” He kept his voice perfectly calm, cool and collected as he turned his head to the communications station.
“No sir. Last communique from the USN was just to expect a delay. No details beyond that.” One of the communication techs brought up the message log and read it off dutifully, and the captain suppressed a sigh. And a swear.
“Thank you, Lieutenant.”
Damned diplomats. “You’d think that for a group whose entire job is to ensure that everything goes as smoothly as possible they’d at least have the courtesy to show up on time,” he thought to himself. The Dreadnought escort from Sol had arrived with time to spare, but the diplomats themselves were still no-shows.
Thirty minutes later, the Comms station finally reported back. “Sir. Incoming from the Imperium. Rear Admiral Soldado is requesting a direct line to yourself and to the head of the delegation.”
“Thank you, Lieutenant. I’ll take it at my chair.” The words of the captain alone were enough for a screen to immediately slide out from the side of the command station, rotating on an articulating arm around to face him. It was blank for a brief moment before two faces appeared side-by-side in front of him.
“This is Captain Wessex of the PSA Calamity.”
“It is an honor, Captain Wessex. I am Rear Admiral Chloe Soldado of the USN Imperium.”
“Rear Admiral, it’s a pleasure to meet you. I am the representative of the Proxima delegation to Farscope, Kase Tremaine.”
“Thank you for receiving our communication. We’ve been notified that the courier ship being used by our envoy has been delayed due to an issue with its Keplite Core. Our diplomatic delegation has changed ships and will be arriving within the day. We apologize for the delay but appreciate your patience in this matter.”
Kase leaned back in his chair on the screen. “Such occurrences are not uncommon, Rear Admiral. I appreciate your bringing it to our attention. If I may, I believe it may be prudent for us to enter D-Space as soon as your delegate arrives. We have a lengthy journey ahead of us and it would be advisable that we begin as quickly as possible.”
Rear Admiral glanced over off screen briefly, then back. “I see no issue with that. If I may, however, is there any particular need for such haste?”
Kase and Captain Nathaniel briefly made eye contact before the Captain cleared his throat. “It’s not so much a need for haste so much as, well, several members of our government wish to have… Other representatives of humanity present in the Perseus arm as quickly as possible. The ship which has made first contact is known to have a somewhat ‘eclectic’ crew and one of our tasks will be to, ah, well… clear up any potential confusion about our species once we arrive.”
The allusion to an ‘eclectic’ crew immediately caught the Rear Admiral’s attention. “Could you perhaps be a bit more specific?” She inquired.
Kase looked distinctly uncomfortable, but mentally steeled himself as he powered forward with the explanation. “Ah… well, to be frank the first contact ship is the Arcadia. Commanded by one Alexander Sherman. If you’re unfamiliar with him, I recommend reading up on the exploration of the habitable exoworld ‘Guylevo’. And, ah, the aftermath of the incident wherein the good captain was expelled from the Terran Explorers League. If you lack the data on your ship, we can transmit it over…”
Captain Wessex silently prayed that they did indeed lack the data, since that would give them an excuse to terminate the call before the Rear Admiral was apprised of exactly who they’d be dealing with once they reached the Perseus Arm, but unfortunately there was no luck there.
“Guylevo?” The Rear Admiral turned to the side as she pulled up the database entry on it, and began to skim. Her expression twitched noticeably as she read, and… was that a smile? No, definitely not.
“I see. So to sum up, the ship that made first contact has a Captain with a history of making immature jokes, acting before he thinks, and being inordinately stubborn.” The Rear Admiral turned her attention back to the faces on the video call. “Does the data dump we received from his ship contain any details about his activities out there?”
Captain Wessex nodded at that. It seemed like she wasn’t about to blame Proxima for Captain Sherman’s eccentricity, which was a pleasant surprise. “It does, yes. Have you had much time to read it?”
“Only skimmed at the moment. I’ve several staff members who are poring over it in detail, but for myself it’s been a bit of a whirlwind getting everything prepared for this expedition.”
Kase and the Captain were both on the same page here, and he immediately jumped into the opening she gave them. “In that case, I believe the most prudent thing to do would be to adjourn for the time being while we wait for your envoy to arrive. We can spend the time reading up on the Captain’s activities as well as go over the species profiles present within the dump.”
The Captain nodded with approval, and the Rear Admiral sat silent for a moment as she considered. “In light of the amount of unknowns that the data will likely clear up, I think that’s not a bad call.” She finally stated. “According to the information we were presented, we’re looking at a twenty-eight day trip to our destination along the optimal path. Given that’s the case, we’ll have plenty of time to formulate plans and goals once we arrive. Thank you for your time, Gentlemen. I shall leave you to it.”
“I look forward to speaking again with you soon, Rear Admiral.”

The shuttle rocketed through space, twisting around as a massive articulating arm extended from its back. A loop of braided metal cable hung at the end of the arm, and it instantly tightened around the spinning chunk of metal the shuttle was chasing. The cable immediately released from the arm, allowing the metal chunk to continue to drift briefly before it began to reel in.
“C’mon, Josh. You said that one would be tricky.” Trix released her wingtip controls and sighed contentedly. Flying the Arcadia was amazing, the ship was massive and powerful beyond anything she’d imagined. But the shuttle was responsive, quick and nimble in a way a massive ship never could be.
Honestly compared to firing the Railcannon, blowing up the massive rich mineral was lackluster. The salvage ‘bot set the charges, the charges went off, and then the huge chunks began to float away. Amanda and Alex were using the salvage ‘bot’s thrusters to keep the big chunks in place while the small chunks that were sent flying were grabbed by the shuttle. Trix and Ma’et were in the shuttle, with Trix running down the expensive debris while Ma’et controlled the SRMS arm that actually hooked the asteroids.
From there the braided cable would be slowly wound back in, the tension eventually bringing the metal chunk to a relative stop compared to the shuttle. The arm would then guide it into the main shuttle body, before they went off on another run chasing down even more.
“That one WAS tricky. It’s just that we have such an excellent pilot and system specialist that you’re making even the tricky ones seem easy.” Josh chuckled over the comm. The cable was being slowly drawn in as Trix let her wings droop back down.
The new wingtip controls were unlike any before. Even her Aunt’s controls were nothing compared to the engineering that had gone into hers. She no longer needed to use the flight stick, instead her wingtip controls could be used to interface directly with the shuttle. While it wasn’t more precise than the flight stick, to her it was a more natural way of flying. Haptic feedback would also give her tactile response information when flying in atmosphere (Or so Min had claimed). Most impressively, she could move her wings in front of her and create a holographic screen that could display media. It was slightly lower quality than a quickboard, but far more portable.
The humming stopped and Trix sat waiting as the image of the metallic debris on the monitor slowly ceased its spinning. Before the cable’s tension could begin spinning it in the opposite degree, the SRMS arm latched on and the tension was released as the cable spun out and loosened around the rock. The cable itself whipped around as the tenson it had built up from the spinning space rock was released, but Ma’et had expected this and carefully positioned the arm so that it did little more than bang against the metal.
“That’s seven big chunks so far,” Ma’et had commented as she maneuvered the arm around to place the rock near the shuttle’s exterior access door. The compartment was a vacuum from previous collections so aside from the motor humming as the door opened, there was no rush of escaping air or other noise. “Wonder how much they’re worth?”
“Well, we’re going to have to separate out the alloys, but preliminary guesswork based on the spectroscopic analysis indicates… roughly two point six billion credits for the metallic asteroid as a whole. So the piece you just ran down is somewhere in the neighborhood of 3 million credits or so.” Josh’s shift was nearing its end, so he sounded a bit on the tired side. “Unless you meant in local currency, in which case your guess is as good as mine.”
Trix felt the banging of the rock as it was stowed away in the shuttle hold through the soles of her feet, the tips of her talons rattling slightly against the padded flooring as the shuttle’s gravity re-engaged and all the collected precious metals settled down against the floor. She swept her wings around and reached out to press her fingers against the metal controls, feeling the shuttle’s engines grow in power as she did so. “Where to next?”
“Hold that thought.” Alex responded over the comms, and suddenly the comm channel grew louder and much, much busier.
“We caught the edge of the flash on the aft array.” “We couldn’t have seen it if we were moving, the engine wash would have blinded those sensors.” “Ship heading coming around 90-counter. Reorienting the primary array, port-side.” “Do we have any data to refine the angle further?” “No, the flash didn’t last long enough.” “We had cameras on the asteroid when the flash happened. Any chance of refining the data based on the reflection from the flash on camera?” “All video feeds are being run through analysis. Based on current facing, suggesting to reorient the primary array at 337 degrees, with 14 degree inclination.”
“What’s going on?” Trix glanced over at Ma’et.
“Not sure. Something happened, that’s for sure.” Ma’et reached out to grab a cable from the console in front of her, and pressed it to her temple. “Not enough bandwidth from here for me to link in directly but… it looks like there was a massive flash. EM data across nearly the entire spectrum, all at once. We’re trying to figure out what caused it.”
“Shit. Everyone, I think that flash was an FTL arrival.” Alex sounded worried, and suddenly one of the displays on the shuttle blinked to life. A blurry, grainy image of a bright object appeared - slowly coming into more and more focus. “It’s still being analyzed but that looks an awful lot like the same ship that showed up here last time we were in system. The one that took a shot at us.”
The image continued to be refined, slowly. “I’m calling it.” Alex’s face appeared on another console, opposite the blurry image. “Trix, Ma’et, back here now. Salvage Bot is bringing over a big chunk of the asteroid with it. Between that and the bits you scooped up, we’ve got roughly six percent of the asteroid in storage. That’s good enough for me. Trix, once you get back on board I want you on the bridge. This might be a long shift, so get whatever rest you can and let Ma’et pilot the shuttle back.”
Trix released her wingtips and glanced over to Ma’et. “Well then, care to do the honors?”
—--
Trix jogged on up to the bridge, and immediately took her seat. “So what’s going exactly?”
“Well, the big flash we now think was definitely the arrival of another ship. It came in much closer to us than the last time we encountered one, and this time we were looking out for it which is why we missed it the first time. Par’s been reviewing records from when we were rescuing the trade ship crew and we found a similar flash appearing before we detected the Tanjeeri ship coming in.” Alex gestured to the main screen and this time the image of the ship was not blurry at all. It was much crisper and detailed, though the fact that it was a ship wasn’t quite as apparent to her.
The image showed an odd looking object that almost seemed to be a collection of spheres with debris sticking out of it. The front had a weird curved hook-like structure, and there were long spines sticking out the sides. The rear of the vessel bulged out strangely, giving it an ugly and lopsided look. Trix couldn’t help but compare it to the Arcadia, which seemed sleek and angular in comparison.
“That’s a Tanjeeri ship?” She couldn’t quite keep the derision from her voice, and Alex nodded. “Matches the only one we’ve seen ourselves. We honestly don’t know much about it. But it’s formidable enough that the rest of the species out here fear them, so we don’t want to find out first hand just what it can do. We currently have it at slightly over one hundred sixty million kilometers, which is why it took so long for the image to resolve into this.”
Trix punched up the details on her console. “So at our max acceleration, they’re still 16 hours away?”
“Yep. But near as we can tell they’re barely coming in at 4 G’s, so that puts them at closer to 25 hours away. Thing is, there’s no guarantee that’s their max acceleration. And keep in mind they’ve already got some velocity built up while we have none. If we let them get too close before moving, they could reach us even if we out-accelerate them.” Alex sounded worried.
“Okay.” Trix began going through a mental checklist of the ship’s readiness. “Engines are almost entirely ready. You want us to just fly away as fast as we can?”
Alex shook his head, but kept his eyes locked on the screen. “I don’t want to fight, but at the same time this is a good opportunity for us. Last time we faced the Tanjeeri we couldn’t respond well because we had rescuees on board. This time I want to get a slightly better grasp of their capabilities. I want you to fly perpendicular to them - let’s start a big curve around the system. Give it, say, 6 G’s of acceleration. We’ll build up velocity but give ourselves a fair amount of leeway so we can see how fast their ship can actually go.”
Trix punched in the commands and brought up a large-scale model of the system they were in. She blew it up on the main display for the captain to see. “In that case, why don’t we cut behind the fourth planetoid’s orbit here? If they follow us and try to head us off inside our curve, it’ll force them to cut in further or go wide. Either way, it’ll give us a chance to gain a bit of extra distance on them as they compensate.”
Alex looked up at the plot with surprise, then down at Trix. “You just th… nevermind. That’s a good idea. A damn good idea. Plot the course, pilot.”
Trix couldn’t help but beam with pride at the praise, and immediately began punching in course corrections and instructions on her console.
Alex, for his part, brought up his own console. “P, did you prompt her to do that?” He wrote to Par.
Not at all, Captain. That idea was entirely hers.”
“You mean after 25 days spent studying she’s become adept enough to be able to plot two converging courses, calculate the interception point, and then line it up with an orbital object to force the Tanjeeri to divert?”
“She’s been an exceptional student, Captain. And while she does make extensive use of the computer’s abilities to calculate the courses, I believe she has a natural talent for visualizing courses in a 3D space and then plotting them at her workstation.”
“You might see it as natural talent but I see it as pure genius. It’s almost scary how well she’s fitting into this role.”
“What we call it is immaterial. Her skills are immature and she lacks experience but she shows incredible promise to be a first class pilot. That’s what matters the most.”
Alex grinned as he closed the chat window and stood up. “Attention all crew. We have confirmation of a Tanjeeri vessel on an intercept course with the Arcadia. In order to better understand what we’re facing, we’re not leaving immediately. Our plan is to keep a very, very respectable distance from them and see how they maneuver. How fast they are. I’m also planning to drop a decoy and see how good their sensors are. But, absolutely zero combat. If anyone has questions or concerns now’s the time to bring them up. Otherwise it’s business as usual for a while.”
He sat back down, and spoke directly to Trix. “Go ahead and plot the course, Pilot. Then I want you to go get eight hours of sleep. I want you rested when we let them get close enough to really start evaluating them.”
Trix nodded, then tilted her head at the Captain. “What about you? Will I be rested up and you’ll be dead tired?”
“Nah. I’m cheating.” He held up a small inhaler. The word on the side took a minute to translate, but eventually she saw ‘Insomniol’ appear in a language she could understand. “Staving off sleep for the next couple days. I’ll be paying the price for several days after this, but once we’re done I’ll recuperate while we’re in d-space on our way back to Kiveyt.”
Trix peered in closely at the inhaler. “Would that work for me if I used it?”
“No clue. Your biology is similar to ours, but tiny differences can result in extremely different effects. Best not to risk it until we know for sure.” Alex made a shooing motion with his hands. “Get a quick bite, and get some rest. You’ll be glad you did.”

2024.06.07 18:13 Fiordhraoi Project Idea / Help getting started with audio analysis

Hey all,
Looking to make a puzzle box as a gift. The basic idea is to have it focused on a musical component, and have the box unlock with a sequence of notes or upon hearing a certain snippet of a song. I'm trying to figure out how viable various approaches might be.
My initial thought is to use a mic to do a FFT and compare it to a stored set of FFTs to find a match, and perform logic based on that. Having looked into it, I think I get the basics of what I need to do, but there are some concerns, and this is getting more inti audio processing/engineering than I'm familiar with.
1) I assume I'm not going to be able to sample any sound frequency higher than the clock frequency of the processor. To that end, I was looking at one of the teensy 4.0 dev boards, does that seem suitable? Or is there a better choice? Is there any sort of audio processing board/hat that would be better suited for this part of it?
2) Ideally, I'd like it if someone could sing or play a sequence of notes, and have different sequences be different stored "keys." Is this doable? And if so, am I going to be able to compare to a stored FFT, or am I going to have to code something more like a frequency analysis and then match numeric frequencies? IE, "If you see frequencies (+/- 10% for wiggle room) 440, 587, 220 in that sequence within a 5 second span, perform X"
3) How much do I need to worry about environmental noise if I'm doing an FFT, whether doing a full match (ie, playing a song sample I have stored) or doing the frequency match as described in #2?
4) I've been looking at using https://github.com/kosme/arduinoFFT as a library to handle the FFT stuff, but if there's something more suited out there let me know.
5) Similarly, I haven't seen any projects similar to this when I've looked around, but if anyone has seen something along these lines I'd love to see how other people have handled it.
Thanks all!

2024.06.07 15:24 ThrowRAergan (BO3 Standard) Temur Ramp/Worldsoul, what is the deal?

Found myself able to craft this deck spending little to no resources, so gave it a try.
After a few matches, I do not see the appeal or general power to consider it T1 or T2.
You have a hard time against aggro, with no real board presence or tools to recover. Removal is limited and dependant on what you draw to trigger Ill-Timed.
Against control, your threats are not big enough to prevent them reaching their win condition. With how common and powerful counter spells are, chances are they will just save them for your big spells, which are fairly easy to anticipate.
Even more, the "ramp" is not solid or consistent enough, which should be your main win-con. A bit of disruption from opponent or an unlucky draw, and you are stopped.
This feels like a way weaker 4C/5C Atraxa, with your only win-con being a cheesy way out in the form of insta death by a sorcery.
Am I playing it wrong, or is it overhyped? What are his good matchups, which decks are you targeting using this one?
Sample list I used to build mine, pretty much the same with some minor changes: T2 - Temur Ramp by Nathan Basser // Standard deck list mtg // Moxfield — MTG Deck Builder

The Need for Local Printing Services

Meeting Unique Business Requirements

Additionally, local print shops can produce signage for events, storefronts, and trade shows, providing a cohesive and polished look for your business.

Whether you need a specific paper type, special finishes, or custom sizes, local printers can deliver tailored results that enhance your brand's image.

Catering to Last-Minute Needs

Time-sensitive projects are a common challenge for businesses. Whether you have a sudden event or an urgent marketing campaign, local printing services can accommodate last-minute requests with ease. Finding the Right Printing Partner

Research and Recommendations

When selecting a printing service, it's essential to conduct thorough research and seek recommendations from other local businesses. Look for reviews and testimonials online, and ask for referrals from colleagues and business associates. This information can help you identify reputable printers with a track record of delivering high-quality results.

Evaluating Quality and Capabilities

Before committing to a printing service, it's crucial to evaluate the quality of their work and their capabilities. Request samples of their previous projects to assess the print quality, paper types, and finishing options. Additionally, inquire about their equipment and technology to ensure they can handle your specific printing needs.

Questions to Ask Potential Printers

To make an informed decision, prepare a list of questions to ask potential printers. Some key questions include:
  • What types of printing services in New Brunswick do you offer?
  • Can you provide samples of your work?
  • What is your typical turnaround time for orders?
  • Do you offer any customization options?
  • What is your pricing structure, and do you offer discounts for bulk orders?

2024.06.07 09:47 Zhen_Stormheart Out of Cruel Space Fan Story: Collision Course - Ch 36

First - Previous - Next
Joker glared at the blinking lights. 'Still ass backwards...' He thought, even as he looked down at his communicator. The moment he stepped into the 'garage' a lot of color vanished from his display as much of the red light spectrum was swallowed by the planets atmosphere.
When he looked up again, he blinked, for where he expected their vans to be waiting, there stood now a bulky boxy ship. Not a huge one, but certainly a chunk longer and wider than the Mi-26 that he "flew" in back on earth.
'I should really start reading those notes...'
He heard activity from the other side, so he made his way over. "Hey... since when do we have this thing?"
"This morning actually and before you ask... technically its a shuttle. So essentially its a [school bus]" Diesel answered as he handed a crate to Ra'Kine and Ra'Nora, who deposited inside the shuttle.
"And who paid for it?"
"It was designated to be scrapped, so Pirate was able to buy it at a heavy discount. Still more than twice what the scrapper would've made, but you know him... said something about 'Trust the rust' and whatnot."
"Rust? As far as I can see it's in an alright shape."
"Wait till you see the cockpit." Bambi yelled from somewhere deeper inside the shuttle. " 'Spartan' doesn't even begin to describe it. No autopilot, no flight assist, no atmospheric shielding... analogue throttle and thruster vectors. Basically two systems that are digital and even those, just barely... Comms and Cameras."
"Come on, you make it sound like a bad deal!" Pirate complained from out of sight.
"Because it is!"
"Yeah nah Pirate, I'm with Bambi on this one." Joker mumbled.
"Enough whining, get in." Diesel practically dragged Joker into the shuttle, not giving him any time to answer.
"Fine, fine heh." He surrendered mockingly as he took a look around the inside of the shuttle.
Lines of seats, all facing the middle, stretched to both sides of the passenger cabin. Each side holding enough space for roughly fifty people, if they squeezed shoulder to shoulder. He took note of the lack of any windows or even monitors for that matter. In the back he saw some of their wives helping with the loading procedure and securing their cargo. Before going to the front, he shuffled up next to Ecana, first giving her a warm embrace, then parting with a tender kiss. In the front, he first came upon a miniature kitchen area, opposite the restroom. Continuing further he finally reached the cockpit and leaned up against the backrest of the oversized chair, currently occupied by Pirate.
"You think you can fly this thing?"
"Think? I already flew it... despite the junkers insistence of 'showing me how its done' and wanting to fly me here. Engine's already hot, only thing we're waiting on was the cargo... and your lazy ass." Pirate chuckled, getting an equally amused snort in return.
"Sorry Cap'n had to watch my make up and put on the lacey underwear, you know the trouble I'm sure."
Several heads poked in through the middle corridor to look in his direction, but soon resumed to finish the preparations.
"Is it supposed to.... make that sound?" Ra'Kine shouted towards Pirate as she stared at the ceiling of the shuttle, roughly at the location the ominous rumbling was coming from.
"Mhhh yes and no? It's not meant to go this fast." Pirate laughed loudly.
"I should've asked why you had me reroute those cables..." Diesel shrunk a bit further into his seat, digging his grip harder into the seats cushion. "Not opposed to some speeding... just not used to being passenger in that scenario."
"Thats only half of the reason for the above average speed... the other would be the rather skeletal state the shuttle is in. Like putting a [500 horsepower] engine in a Toyota" came the cackling laughter of Pirate once more, just as the shuttle banked hard.
"Whats a Toyota?" Tsiera glanced over to Diesel.
"Uhhh a brand of vehicles from Earth." Something sounding suspiciously like hail started raining upon the roof and left side of the hull, shortly followed by another banking maneuver that swiftly brought them into the open again. "Uh what was that?"
"Minor landslide~ but don't worry our destination is already in view and I can't burn full throttle above Scavtown" Pirate answered as he decelerated slowly, unlocking the boarding doors to make up for the lack of windows.
This Scavtown as it's nickname suggested, was mainly comprised of hobby or full-time scavengers, but also junkers and miners, searching for usable material, washed up by the planets natural phenomenon. The 'town' aspect however was not as true anymore, as Scavtown was more or less an artificial landmass that had been elevated above the relatively fast decaying soil beneath, settling at the lip of 'The Maw'. Giving it the appearance of an alien version of Venice if it was built on loose gravel and earth instead. Even from this distance they could see giant bulky ships hovering just on the horizon, some descending beneath sightline and others coming back out and returning to Scavtown.
"How come the City we're at doesn't look like this?" Bambi yelled over the rushing wind.
"The researchers that have looked into this were able to determine, that not all of the continental plates shift in the same way that would bring them closer to the phenomenon. To keep it simple, there are continental plates that are too small to be dragged along, thus they kind of just surf on top of the heavier plates edges and are relatively safe to build on long term. Though... it's still unknown how it all started." Pirate narrated as he made the shuttle descend gradually ending with a soft thud as it touched down.
"Who brought this piece of junk into the air and decided to fucking land it here?!" A shrill scream came from an approaching woman, wearing something similar to an enforcer vest, yet the rest of the uniform was missing and instead comprised of casual clothing. Freezing as she catches a glimpse at Joker, then Diesel. "Wh...wh..... uhm... Welcome to Scavtown! How can I help you?" She quickly adjusts, sauntering over with a visibly forced relaxedness, leaning awkwardly against the shuttle. "Fine ship you got here~ Wouldn't mind giving you a tour in my ship"
Hushed snickers go through the group as Pirate finished up and walked back. "Greetings, we're here to meet... uhm." He glances at his communicator. "Raltir from J.J.L."
"J.J.L.? Wouldn't you prefer a more professional Junker shop?"
"To me they made quite the professional impression." He grins.
A few minutes later the group find themselves in a small garage shop with several projects suspended inside, vaguely similar to popular vehicles on Centris, except all of them show patchwork jobs done by combining various pieces from vastly different sources. Under one such unfinished vehicle stands a stocky mechanic lady currently shoulder deep with both arms inside the guts of the landspeeder, her volpir ears flopping about as she notices her guests.
"Gimme-a-sec..." She grumbled, grunting several times as she seems to be pulling on something, then finally she stumbles back catching herself and the large machine part she just ripped free. Dropping it on a nearby table she finally turns to the group. "Greetings, hello and whatever the fuck... my name is Raltir, how may i help yall?"
"You're Jeannas sister?" Pirate inquired.
"Das what I just said, didn-I. Waiiii~t you must be Thomas's friends then!"
"Thomas?!" Bambi, Diesel and Joker piped up simultaneously.
"Oh right, tehe. 'Officer Kennway' "Raltir snickered.
"That's quite right we're with Thomas." Pirate tried to steer the conversation back on track. "He told me, we could get a tour of the Maw with your help, get some samples, do a few small experiments and send all that data back to him."
"Ah sure thing! Bubby told me you'd be coming so I didn't start any big stuff~"
"When did he get himself some wives?" "Since when is his freaking name Thomas?!" "Guess even Kennway is getting out of his shell."
Pirate just rolled his eyes, ignoring the questions and statements that could be misunderstood as indirect insults to their direct superior, source of intel and only known contact back to the Undaunted. "Thank you very much Raltir. We'd rather get started before my crew and friends... dig themselves their own court marshal."
"Sure-sure right this way~" Raltir smiled a little strained, confusion plainly written on her face.
Kennway smiled to himself as he flipped the purple pancakes that mostly tasted like sweet air to him. His communicator pinged, followed shortly after by a buzzing. He opened the private message finding a group photo of Pirate and his crew, together with Raltir, all grinning into the camera, with the giant cliffs of the Maw in the background. He flicked over to the official messages and quickly confirmed the receival of reports and data, then switching back to the group image.
In that moment Jeanna came through the door to the kitchen with her own communicator already pointing his way. "Hey Raltir sent me this super cute photo!" And indeed it was the same he had just received from Pirate. With a second glance he spotted the text beneath it 'Had a great time at the Maw, thanks for your help Thomas.'
"Huh, guess we're on a first name basis now..." Kennway muttered to himself as he typed out a reply. 'Glad you had fun, now kick some ass at the tournament Ricardo.' Just when he went to send it, he stopped himself and pulled a caught off guard Jeanna into frame, snapping a quick picture to attach.
"Daddy! When are the masa patties done??" Trisks angelic voice called over from the living room.
"Almost don..." Kennway froze, jaw hanging loose as he glanced at his wife, whom was staring wide eyed back, till the shock finally wore off and she smiled. Kennway on the other hand blinked a few times, his heart threatening to explode from joy, so he did the only thing he could. Hopping excitedly as he fistpumped and punched the air like an excited teenager, grinning wild, hugging Jeanne and kissing her passionately. He glanced into the living room for a moment, just to confirm it was Trisk and not his imagination playing a trick on him and then quickly hurried back to finish cooking.
"Good morning to all of our wonderful viewers and welcome to~~ Feeding F-f-f-frenzy~~! The time has come to bring you all the professional viewing pleasure and commentary to go with this times tournament! As always, our thanks go out to the Academy for allowing us to view and stream the battles, though we've been told that we're going to be limited on a few matches, but we'd be compensated through the spectator feed and the judge feeds." An energetic Cannidor woman in an intricate suit presented. "Let's hope we can see some spectacular footage of the galactic newcomers. I know i wouldn't mind, from what I heard on the wide net and stories they're quite a force to be reckoned with."
Behind the woman a large screen lit up, first with plain grey steel looking eerily similar to a vault door, laser fire from off screen carved into the grey looking surface. 'Fight for glory! Fight for honor!' The carved text was backlit as the grey quickly turned to familiar red hot metal before a larger plasma burst punched through from behind, quickly followed by a very common frigate class ship plowing through. Blazing text written across its hull 'Maw Academy'.
"All that and MUCH more! Sign up, if you got the tits for it!" A voice-over spoke as the trailer faded into darkness, leaving the Cannidor grinning wide into the camera.
"You heard'em. See you all same time tomorrow and don't forget to use code 'Undaunted' for an ad-free experience thanks to this years major sponsor the Undaunted, special thanks go out to~~" She peeks down at something and cocks an eyebrow. "Uhm special thanks go out to all of our long time fans and supporters, may the tournament be one spoken about for centuries to come! Till next time~~.... Why are there no names-" The broadcast lasts just a few seconds too long, leaving Kennway chuckling to himself as he turns off the monitor.

2024.06.07 09:44 homeandsoul Beyond the Showroom: How to Buy Furniture Online with Confidence

The world of online shopping has revolutionized how we buy everything, from groceries to gadgets. Furniture shopping is no exception. Gone are the days when purchasing a new rattan armchair dining set or a pair of bar stools meant a day-long excursion to multiple stores. Now, with a few clicks, you can browse endless options and have your selections delivered straight to your door. However, buying furniture online can be daunting. How do you ensure quality, comfort, and style without physically seeing the items? Here’s how to buy furniture online with confidence.
1. Do Your Research
Before making any purchase, spend time researching your options. Read reviews from other customers to gauge the quality and durability of the pieces you're considering. Websites like Wayfair, Overstock, and even Amazon provide extensive customer reviews and ratings, which can be invaluable.
For example, if you’re in the market for a rattan armchair dining set, search for models that have high ratings and detailed reviews. Customers often share photos of the furniture in their own homes, which can give you a better idea of how it looks in real life.
2. Know Your Dimensions
One of the biggest challenges of buying furniture online is ensuring it will fit in your space. Measure the area where you plan to place the furniture, and double-check the dimensions listed on the product page. Remember to consider doorways, stairwells, and elevators if you live in an apartment building.
For those furnishing a bar area, knowing the height and width of your bar chairs is crucial. If you're looking for bar chairs Dubai, make sure they match the height of your bar or counter. Standard bar chair heights range from 28 to 32 inches, but it's always best to measure your specific needs.
3. Explore Material and Color Options
Photos on websites can sometimes be deceiving when it comes to color and texture. Check the product description for information on materials and finishes. If possible, order swatches or samples. For instance, when buying bar stools, consider the upholstery material and finish. Leather, fabric, and wood all have different feels and maintenance requirements.
4. Check Return Policies and Warranties
Even with thorough research, there's always a chance that a piece of furniture won't meet your expectations. Ensure the retailer has a reasonable return policy. Look for companies that offer hassle-free returns, free return shipping, and no restocking fees. Additionally, check if the furniture comes with a warranty, which can provide peace of mind regarding the item's durability and quality.
5. Compare Prices and Look for Deals
Online furniture stores often have sales, discounts, and promotional offers. Compare prices across different websites to ensure you’re getting the best deal. Sign up for newsletters from your favorite stores to stay updated on upcoming sales.
For example, if you’re looking for bar stools, a quick search might reveal significant price differences between stores. Bar chairs in Dubai might be on sale at one retailer, while another might offer free shipping or a discount for new customers.
6. Visualize with Augmented Reality (AR) Tools
Many online retailers now offer AR tools that allow you to visualize how furniture will look in your space. These tools can be incredibly helpful for seeing if that rattan armchair dining set complements your existing decor or if those bar stools fit neatly under your counter.
7. Read the Fine Print
Always read the product descriptions carefully. Look for details about assembly requirements, shipping times, and any additional costs. Knowing what to expect can save you from unpleasant surprises later.
8. Trust Your Instincts
Finally, trust your instincts. If something seems too good to be true, it probably is. Stick with reputable retailers and avoid deals that seem suspiciously low.
Conclusion
Buying furniture online doesn’t have to be a gamble. With careful research, attention to detail, and a little bit of patience, you can find the perfect pieces to complement your home. Whether you’re hunting for a stylish rattan armchair dining set, sleek bar chairs in Dubai, or cozy bar stools for your kitchen, shopping online can be a convenient and satisfying experience. Happy furnishing!
