2024.05.16 16:50 rhinestonestar Etiquette for emailing editor on whether my manuscript is a good fit for the journal?

I'm looking for an appropriate outlet for my manuscript-in-progress, and currently deciding between four journals to target. I've never submitted to a journal on my own before (always the et al...) so I want to make sure I'm interpreting the scope/aims of the journals correctly and making a good decision, especially because it is a small scale study. My advisors recommended I just email the editors and ask if my project would be of interest or a good potential fit for the journal so I don't waste my time submitting when it will be desk rejected for being out of scope, but I'm not sure what this email should look like or what the proper etiquette is. I wrote up something like this but it feels really long. It's like 400 words.
Dear Dr. Lastname,
I'm a PhD student from University currently searching for an appropriate journal for my research on Topic. I was wondering if you could provide some guidance on whether my manuscript would be suited for submission to Journal.
I investigated... (brief description of research questions and method, in about 100 words)
I learned that... (brief description of major findings, in about 100 words)
(Briefly explain how my small study could be of interest to a broader audience + my concerns / questions about how it fits into the journal scope) I would greatly appreciate your guidance on whether this manuscript is a good fit for Journal.
Sincerely,
Rhinestone Star
Any feedback is appreciated!

2024.05.16 16:48 lantosgyuri Exploring municipal circle economy solutions

Hi all, I’m trying to deepen my knowledge about how municipalities are currently implementing circle economy solutions, and what they could implement. I’m especially interested in solutions that make financial advantage for the locals, and also makes the area more resource resilient. I’m currently in the research phase, so please suggest any source that is even just a bit related to that topic or leave a comment with your personal experience/opinion/ideas.
Thanks in advance!

2024.05.16 16:32 blkforboding I have a big problem related to execution and I need advice and tips.

A little background about me: I started learning Python on and off 3 years ago. Eventually, I got an unpaid internship and a mentor to work on a game engine written in C++. Since then, I have been learning C++. I come from a nontraditional background. I do not have a CS degree. Recently, my internship moved away from C++ and is now using Rust.
I have a big problem when I am building a project. I tend to spend too much time reading about different concepts and very little coding gets done. Say for instance I want to create a window in C++. I would google and look at technical documents. However, in my research, I get lost in a rabbit hole and it is difficult for me to get out. At the end of it all, I have not written any code but my brain is exhausted from reading. How can I balance this? I know I need to read when I do not have the technical knowledge about a topic, but how do I limit my time researching when the problem is unknown and I do not know if what I am researching is useful?
I want to be able to build large projects iteratively and master execution. Planning is a no-brainer, but what can I do to stop myself from overplanning? What are some tips I can use to extract useful information quickly? How can I improve my mental processing speed? Would learning about software architecture help me execute projects? I feel like I am walking in the dark most of the time because almost everything is new to me. I would like to hear how you guys build your projects as well. What are some habits that have helped you build your projects?

2024.05.16 16:30 smarty4ever Help please - High school research paper on extraction of natural dyes

Hi again!
I asked for some help here a while ago about my chemistry research paper (4000 word count). The topic is extraction/purification of natural dyes and then comparing their properties.
I discussed with my supervisor about using curcumin (which you guys helped me come up with it, so thank you!). He has said that was possible, but he also suggested maybe using lichen, which is apparently what litmus paper is made of.
He said I could collect it from somewhere nearby, extract it at different concentrations, and compare it. Since it is pH sensitive, he said I could look at it at different pH solutions and use spectrometry to compare its sensitivity. I feel like this is an interesting idea, but he said there wasn’t many sources on it.
Do you think I should use litmus or curcumin? If I were to look at curcumin, I am not exactly sure what I could compare (as it is not as pH sensitive).
Also, doing the lichen experiment, what would my first steps be? Obviously I would extract the dye at different concentrations, and then use different pH solutions to characterize it? My supervisor suggested that, but I don’t really understand… How would I ”characterize” it?
Also how exactly does spectrometry help me measure its sensiitivity? Would I compare it before and after using a pH solution?
I know this is a lot, so I am very sorry. I am in need of help and I didn’t know where to ask…

2024.05.16 16:26 Menschenjagd I wanted to try the questionnaire

This subreddit needs an official questionnaire and I think this one is easy enough to answer. I don't expect to become sure of my type because of internet strangers, but I do like answering questions about myself.
My Enneagram type is either 6w5 or 9w8, 469, sp/so. I have autism. (I think an official questionnaire should ask for this information. Autism can influence E (empathy), F (sensory issues), V (executive dysfunction) and L (special interests). A high self-preservation instinct can look like F (routines, health), sexual and social can look like F too (wanting to look attractive or socially acceptable (or maybe like you belong to a subculture). A low sexual or social instinct could look like lower E.)
L (logic)
I enjoy studying, but every time I decide I should do it more I make a plan of everything I want to study and then it starts feeling very heavy. I want to only study fun topics like typology, psychology, philosophy and languages. I do it for fun and because I feel inferior when I have less knowledge than other people.
I have some core beliefs that help me form opinions on different topics (for example the theory of evolution, which can be applied to most topics). I sometimes form an opinion based on what makes sense for me instead of what is factual. If I don't understand something I can be skeptical, if something I don't believe in (for example astrology) got scientifically proven I would feel very uncomfortable and question the results.
I like telling people about personality systems. I think teaching people and typing them makes me feel useful, and I need to type people irl if I want to understand the systems. I sometimes talk about philosophy, but that usually doesn't go anywhere because my beliefs are too unromantic for other people and they often judge me for being a nihilist or an egoist. I also like learning and teaching languages, maybe too much. I think some people feel pressured by me trying to teach them.
I often struggle with understanding scientific topics. It does bother me a lot, I am afraid of my future children asking me to explain physics to them. I avoid criticism like the plague, I don't want to express anything that could be false so I often either don't express myself or triple check everything. I easily doubt my own opinion, especially if the topic is a complex one like typology. Philosophy is much simpler, you just state your opinion and then the other persons states theirs and then you both think that the other person is stupid, but this is easy for me to say since my opinion is always the simplest one and therefore correct. ("What is the moral choice her?" "Morality isn't real." "Was this a selfish action?" "All actions are selfish." "What is the meaning of life?" "There is no meaning." "Is god real?" "We don't have any proof that god exists.")
Yeah, it was fun. It is a major part of me, but I know that if I had been born into the stone ages it wouldn't be.
E (emotion)
Not really, I sometimes have creative ideas but I rarely do anything with them.
I am fine with expressing emotions like anger or fun, but I don't want to express deeper or less strong feelings like love. I rarely love people, and I can't express something I don't feel.
Of course they are part of my decision making process, they are for every human. If you choose a path because it feels the most secure you are making a decision based on anxiety, or on wanting to feel more comfort than anxiety in the future. I sometimes base my decisions on excitement. I don't want to have a boring job.
I try my best to not create a negative one, and I try to make people feel better about themselves when they are insecure about something. I am not very interested in talking about the feelings of my friends, but I do play therapist sometimes because of my interest in psychology. I am interested in creativity in general, I enjoy listening to music and making and sharing playlists, but I am usually not deeply interested in my friends.
Yes, it makes me feel either vulnerable (if I have strong emotions) or inhuman (if I don't have enough). Yes, I don't do it much. The thought makes me uncomfortable. Yes, but ONLY because I'm very sensitive and quickly cry, which can be very inconvenient and I don't know how to stop it.
Yes. Not really, but I have been thinking about morality more so maybe in the future, although that might be more of a Volition topic.
F (physics / foundation)
Sleeping and not being hungry are important to me, but apart from that I don't do much. I don't care about what I eat or where I sleep as long as it's enough. I don't often try new products, if I do it's either because I noticed a problem (which can take a long time) or because my mother (3F) noticed one.
I think I used to care about it for a while, but then I either forgot about it or decided that it is a waste of money and time. I still have preferences, I just try to not spend too much energy on them. I enjoy nature and some sports, but I sometimes forget about them for a while. I sadly don't get much pleasure from eating or looking at things.
Yes, but the tastes I talk about are my taste in music or movies. I don't like hearing about other people's tastes as much because I feel like I then have to spend time listening to their favorite artists, and then I have to form an opinion on it... and I don't like most artists.
Idk about the other questions.
No. No. Sometimes I think that I'm sick, but it doesn't make me panic. Not sure, I think I sometimes ignore it and sometimes follow it, it probably depends on how much effort changing it would take. My mother is 3F and I think her criticisms are annoying, she wants me to change my knife holding habits and stop eating old cooked rice (I hate wasting food). But I can critique other people, for example for not being clean or practical enough.
Not really, it wasn't difficult, just a bit boring. It's not important to me, except my fashion choices since they usually reflect my identity.
V (volition)
Yes, but only in the physical world, I can for example get people to watch my favorite movie.
I make detailed plans that are too ambitious for me to follow. I like having a detailed plan, it makes me feel like I can achieve my goals. If I'm panicking about a goal I make a detailed plan. But I usually don't follow the plan because I have low energy/ problems motivating myself. I take advice from others if they are more knowledgable than me and probably from my mother.
Sometimes I get the feeling that I need to get my life together and then I make a bunch of plans and lists, but I don't work on them enough. I procrastinate a lot. I'm bad at routines, I prefer making a to do list every day. I sometimes try establishing a routine to reach a goal, but then I forget to follow it or am unable to follow it exactly because I can't predict how long a task will take or because something gets in the way. I either start working on a goal when I'm motivated or when I'm panicking.
Yes, it makes me feel useful. I always try to make people feel like they can reach their goals, but I can also be critical, especially about job choices. I sometimes get the urge to make language study plans for people.
I prefer working in groups of people I know well, if I'm with strangers I'm too shy to speak up. I take charge in small groups of incompetent people, I can remind people of their responsibilities, but I don't want to make decisions on my own. I can also take charge when it comes to physical needs like food (but I will ask everyone their preferences).
No, I am too easily stressed. I don't worry about being lazy, I know that it's true. I do feel a lot of shame and anxiety about my productivity, but I think anyone who is as lazy as me would.
I worry about missing something. Do I really want this future? Isn't there something better out there? I've changed my mind about my future in the past and wasted a lot of time that way, so now I want to make sure, but that's impossible. Finding the right method is important too. It does feel impossible but that's because it IS, noone can really know the future except maybe a super-super-computer.
I think I can take criticism, but I might cry or consider murder before accepting it, especially if it includes a character judgement (I've heard "You're too sensitive for this job. You should try [similar job] instead." Who do you think you are to give me advice? You don't know my reasons for choosing this job.). Except if the criticism is not valid, then I can ignore it.
More difficult than boring, it's difficult for me to separate Volition from the other aspects. I used to not have any goals, but now it is a part of my identity, but I know that my goals might change.

2024.05.16 16:23 arcgain Exploring the Basics of CBD: What You Need to Know

Impact-Site-Verification: 0080656a-6495-4f92-b6a8-13919ad063be
CBD, short for cannabidiol, seems to be everywhere these days, from wellness shops to your neighbor's medicine cabinet. But what exactly is it, and why is everyone talking about it? Let's dive into the basics of CBD:
1. What is CBD? CBD is a compound found in the cannabis plant. Unlike its cousin THC (tetrahydrocannabinol), CBD doesn't get you high. Instead, it's renowned for its potential therapeutic benefits without the psychoactive effects.
2. How does it work? CBD interacts with the body's endocannabinoid system, a complex network of receptors that regulate various bodily functions like mood, sleep, appetite, and pain. By influencing this system, CBD may help maintain balance and promote overall wellness.
3. What are the benefits? While research is still ongoing, CBD has shown promise in managing various conditions, including anxiety, insomnia, chronic pain, epilepsy, and even acne. Many users also report improved relaxation and stress relief.
4. How to use CBD? CBD comes in various forms, including oils, tinctures, capsules, edibles, topicals, and vapes. The best method for you depends on your preferences and desired effects. Start with a low dose and gradually increase until you find what works for you.
5. Is it legal? The legal status of CBD varies by location. In the United States, CBD derived from hemp (containing less than 0.3% THC) was federally legalized in 2018 with the Farm Bill. However, it's essential to check your local laws before purchasing or using CBD products.
6. Quality matters. Not all CBD products are created equal. Look for reputable brands that provide third-party lab test results to ensure purity and potency. Avoid products with dubious claims or unrealistic promises.
7. Consult a professional. If you're considering using CBD for medical purposes or have underlying health conditions, it's wise to consult with a healthcare professional first. They can offer personalized advice and help you navigate any potential interactions with medications.
In conclusion, CBD holds significant promise as a natural remedy for various ailments, but it's essential to educate yourself and approach it mindfully. Whether you're a newcomer or a seasoned user, feel free to share your experiences, questions, and insights below. Let's keep the conversation going!

Beyond Textbooks: Engaging Students with Digital Publishing in Higher Ed
https://preview.redd.it/c617qonqqs0d1.jpg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=fb72160c2e637b482e4b13a400f931cd43a8db2d
For decades, textbooks have been the cornerstone of higher education. But in today’s dynamic learning landscape, static textbooks are struggling to capture the attention of digital-native students. Enter digital publishing: a transformative force that’s revolutionizing the way students learn and engage with course material.
The Drawbacks of Textbooks: A Call for Change
Traditional textbooks come with a slew of limitations. They’re often static and expensive, offering limited interactivity and accessibility features. This makes it difficult for students with diverse learning styles to grasp complex concepts. Additionally, textbooks become outdated quickly, leaving students grappling with potentially irrelevant information.
The Power of Digital Publishing
Digital publishing offers a breath of fresh air. E-books and interactive learning platforms introduce a dynamic learning environment, fostering deeper engagement and knowledge retention. Here are some ways digital publishing is transforming higher education:
  • Enhanced Engagement: Digital publications allow for interactive elements like embedded videos, simulations, and quizzes. These features break down complex concepts into digestible chunks, making learning more interactive and enjoyable.
  • Accessibility for All: Digital publishing platforms can cater to diverse learning styles by offering text-to-speech conversion, closed captions for videos, and the ability to adjust font sizes and colors. This creates an inclusive learning environment for all students.
  • Real-Time Updates: Unlike static textbooks, digital publications can be updated in real-time to reflect the latest research and developments in the field. This ensures students are learning with the most current information.
  • Collaboration and Community Building: Digital platforms enable collaboration features like online discussions, shared notes, and peer review functionalities. This fosters a sense of community and encourages active learning among students.
  • Cost-Effectiveness: Compared to the ever-increasing cost of traditional textbooks, digital publications offer a more cost-effective solution. Institutions can create custom learning materials or curate open educational resources (OERs) to reduce student expenses.
Developing Engaging Digital Content
The success of digital publishing hinges on creating engaging content. Here are some tips for faculty to consider:
  • Focus on interactive elements: Integrate multimedia content, polls, quizzes, and games to make learning more immersive.
  • Break down complex topics: Use clear and concise language with visuals, infographics, and short videos to explain difficult concepts.
  • Incorporate real-world applications: Connect theory to practice by including case studies, guest lectures from industry experts, and project-based learning activities.
  • Make feedback interactive: Encourage student participation through online forums, group discussions, and real-time feedback mechanisms.
The Future of Learning is Here
Digital publishing is not just a trend; it’s the future of higher education. By embracing these new tools, educators can create dynamic, engaging learning experiences that prepare students for success in the 21st century.

2024.05.16 16:12 Superchief440 Very Encouraging B of A 2024 Health Care Conference Presentation

Bank of America Health Care Conference 2024 Presentation
Exact Sciences' Mission is to help eradicate cancer by preventing it, detecting it earlier and guiding treatment. In the early innings of how genomics will transform cancer prevention, diagnosis and treatment
Exact Sciences' Cologuard and Oncotype DX are two of the top brands ever in cancer diagnostics. They are helping to build a platform company through which other innovative cancer diagnostics will help patients.
Guided to 15% growth (CAGR) through 2027. Projecting over 20% adjusted ebitda margins by 2027.
Near-term growth drivers - Cologuard and Oncotype DX globally. Future drivers - pipeline.
Reiterated 2024 Revenue and EBITDA guide.
60 million Americans not up to date with colon cancer screening - huge unscreened population
Q4 2023 - highest dollar growth in screening in history. Sequential decrease in Cologuard screening revenue due to normal Q1 seasonal weakness. Despite sequential screening revenue decline, screening revenue still increased 7% YOY, and management confident in achieving 2nd Quarter and 2nd Half Guide revenue guides.
Cologuard will have steady predictable growth based upon # of sales calls to primary care physicians and increasing Health System Orders.
New Cologuard business opportunity starting last year - screening in Medicare Advantage population and gap closure programs in large health systems.
CEO Kevin Conroy: "We are confident in our ability to meet our 2nd quarter and 2nd half sales guidance."
Q1 2024 was in-line with expectations. Q1 of 2023 was an anomaly.
Sales and Marketing Spend - Spent about $800 million in sales and marketing in 2023 (sales force a relatively small component of this, sales force being brought back to levels of 2022) - High ROI from investment in additional sales people.
Last 5 quarters added 50,000 new primary care providers - docs, pa’s and nurses
As docs order more, amount of orders increases. As sales calls increase in frequency, pcp’s order more.
Calling on a doc once per quarter will result on average in six orders. Calling on a doc six times per quarter will result on average in 24 order. Sales reps provide pcp's tools, education, motivation to increase colon cancer screening numbers.
Priorities for CFO - Maintain Growth Engine not only of CG and Oncotype, but also new product pipeline - Flywheel of innovation needs to keep spinning. Will expand over 300 basis points of leverage in 2024. Increasing leverage in G&A going forward. Clear and credible pathway to adjusted ebitda margins of 20% in 2027
CFO Aaron Bloomer: Exact Sciences will show FCF growth and positive FCF delivery for each of the next three quarters in 2024.
17% CG growth embedded in 15% CAGR through 2027. (Compound Annual Growth Rate)
Impressive CAGR over the past few years. Seeing increasing opportunities to enhance the use of Cologuard as a frontline screening tool.
Over a billion dollars invested in EXACT NEXUS - Electronic Ordering, Result Delivery, Prior Authorization, Reimbursement embedded into physician's EPIC electronic record. Huge amount of customer satisfaction - makes using Cologuard easy.
Long arduous process of including Cologuard into the Quality Measures (2-3 years from being included in USPSTF guidelines), which can help health systems and plans increase their star rating in order to get quality bonuses, which is a key to their success.
130,000 new cases/year, 50,000 deaths/year from Colon Cancer, with 60 million people in U.S. not current with CRC screening guidelines.
Colonoscopy capacity in US is 12,000,000. Half screening, half diagnostic. Cologuard is helping health system and GI’s getting more people screened.
Re-screening now mid 20's as a % of revenue - aiming for 50%
Because of Covid, for two years in a row, only 1.2 million people have been eligible for re-screens. This year 1.6 million eligible for re-screen, and that number will increase annually. Also, 20 million new prospective customers in the 45-49 age group - want them to be happy customers for next 30 years. The 45-49 age group rescreens are starting to kick off this year (USPSTF guideline to include that age group updated in 2021).
Cologuard Plus - 10 Years of R&D and Clinical Trials - Improved False Positive Rate, Cancer Detection, Advanced Adenoma Detection. Improvement on all levels, and Cologuard 3.0 already in development.
Looking for a modest price increase for Cologuard Plus rolling in over a couple years period of time. Because false positives are lower - 30% fewer false positives - more people will stay in Cologuard Testing Family
Cologuard Plus also benefits from 5-7% Lower COGs = margin expansion.
20th Anniversary for Oncotype in US. 1 billion cumulative investment in Oncotype infrastructure. Quality of Science and Clinical Evidence behind it is unmatched. Company is deeply rooted in being patient and customer-centric.
Question to Brian Baranick, General Manager of Precision Oncology - How are you gonna catch up in MRD?
With respect to MRD, have never seen such a fast developing market - real clinical unmet need - enthusiasm among patients and physicians - excited to be apart of this market. Exact Sciences will catch up in MRD due to the following:
1) World class commercial capabilities - precision oncology reps are experienced, know physicians/territories, how to sell and how to get access to leverage these relationships to launch CRC MRD next year.
2) Exact Sciences' Nexus Platform - IT infrastructure to help providers save time obtaining prior use authorizations. This billion dollar company investment will allow providers to obtain prior use authorizations and order MRD tests more quickly and easily.
3) Better Performing Product - Partnering with West German Study Group and NSABP (National Surgical Adjuvant Breast and Bower Project) To build out evidence around MRD tests - Goal is for Exact Sciences' MRD tests to have best in Class Evidence. Exact Sciences' MRD tests measure more mutations in blood than some of the first mover companies in space, and will have best in class evidence. Investors will hear more about performance of MRD assays and evidence in the back half of this year.
Blood-based screening assets - crowded marketplace - Use case for Cologuard Blood will be limited.
Great idea in concept - Bert Vogelstein is a pre-eminent researcher in the field and wrote a 2005 paper on the subject of CRC screening blood test. He concluded that detecting circulating tumor dna from precancerous lesions/polyps is impossible - you can’t find what’s not there. According to Kevin Conroy, if you’re not finding pre-cancer, you don’t have a true screening test.
The real power of colon cancer screening is finding and removing pre-cancerous polyps which may result in Stage 1 disease - that is the goal. As a result, it is highly unlikely that blood tests to screen for CRC will end up in the USPSTF guidelines and quality measures b/c they are unable to detect precancer. CRC screening blood test will end up being more of a niche market. Commercial payers will not be too excited to pay for something which is not in the quality measures. Probably won’t find out if blood CRC screening will be in the quality measures until 2028-29 (After likely USPSTF in 2027). Howver, fee for service medicare advantage has agreed to pay for blood based crc. USPSTF meets every 5-8 years on CRC screening (August, 2014 - May, 2021). Predict next Meeting in 2027. This cycle think 6 years until USPSTF and then quality measures 2-3 years later
Management expects two or three blood tests to be approved by the FDA, including Cologuard Blood. Don't believe blood tests will ultimately be a big overhand for investors as Cologuard will still grow market share even with other FDA approved CRC blood tests as it is the most effective CRC screening test. GI societies recently weighed in - not recommending blood tests for frontline CRC screening. The growth of Cologuard over the coming years will be what excites investors, not CRC blood test.
Question to CFO Aaron Bloomer: What is most underappreciated or misunderstood about the company?
CFO is excited about pipeline. The company has spent many years developing these pipeline products, a number or which are slated to launch over the next few years. Don’t think investors appreciate the impact these pipeline products will have on patients, on revenue and the Company's growth profile, as well as on margins.
Excited about mid-teens growth in Cologuard and along with MRD and other new products coming online in the next few years which will provide both the Company with both leverage and diversification.

2024.05.16 16:01 Spirited_Scallion971 RN vs RT

Recently I reached out to an RT who’s been an RT for over 15 years. I pretty much asked if they had advice and how they got into radiation therapy. The response I got was if they could go back they would do nursing and to consider nursing for the following reasons : - its the same amount of schooling - there’s not a lot of options in therapy - you can’t work nights or weekends if you wanted to - the hours can sometimes run late - there are rotating shifts in RT (not exactly sure what that means or how it may be a con?)
Personally, when I read their response my thought was, how are those cons? I would consider most of those pro’s of being an RT vs nurse.
I know there are a few posts on this topic, however I couldn’t find what I was looking for. Everyone on here seems to love their job, but I need some brutally honest RT’s to say if they regret doing RT instead of RN & explain (or if you don’t regret just some reasons RN may be a better option or not?)

2024.05.16 15:53 FewPhilosopher7623 How to handle a PhD supervisor who does not properly guide you?

Hello everyone. I find myself in a challenging situation and would greatly appreciate your help, as it is affecting me mentally.
I am currently pursuing a PhD in theoretical physics in a European country, with the program expected to last 3-4 years. I am already 1.5 years into the program and am very happy and motivated with my research topic. I work consistently and productively, and enjoy what I do. My supervisor, a knowledgeable man in his mid-40s, is not a good mentor. The lab is small, consisting of 5 PhD students and 1 postdoc, with only the postdoc and myself being international students.
The issue I am facing is the lack of guidance from my supervisor and the strained relationship we have. He shows no interest in my progress, results, or research, and provides zero feedback. Communication is difficult, and it is clear that we both find each other annoying. Despite my attempts to establish regular meetings and get feedback, he has expressed no interest as he said he does not have time for this. I completed a project he provided me with, but it seems he is unsure of what I should do next.
If he was like that to everyone I would feel that the issue is not me. But this is not the case. He follows more or less similar treatment to everyone apart from one PhD student, who is 4 months senior to me. To him, he behaves in a completely different and more supportive manner, like a mentor. It is obvious that he likes him the most. They keep talking about research to each other's offices almost on a daily base sometimes they even talk about small things. Yet, establishing weekly meeting with me is too busy for him. I feel isolated and disadvantaged in this situation, which has impacted me negatively. I consider myself motivated and knowledgeable but my powers have a limit.
I have tried to address this by conceiving and starting 2 projects and seeking collaboration with another professor from a different country. This goes well even though my supervisor continues to show little interest in these projects. I have even discussed this with my therapist, as it makes me feel incapable and insecure, thinking that I do something wrong and sometimes have thoughts that he is racist against me.
My questions for you are:
  1. What should I do in this situation? I am reluctant to change supervisors, as I am passionate about my research topic and enjoy the work conditions overall.
  2. How can I deal with the insecurities and lack of motivation? These are triggered by overhearing conversations between my supervisor and the other PhD student.
  3. I am concerned that the lack of mentorship will harm my career progression. Do you share this concern? While I have grown in independence and can network and initiate projects, I understand this may not be ideal compared to having a mentor like a lot of my peers have.
Apologies for the long post, I want to make it as clear as possible!

2024.05.16 15:42 Small-Road-1776 Hello! I need help in typing myself.

• How old are you? What's your gender? Give us a general description of yourself.
I'm 17 years old about to be 18 this year. I'm a female, about to enter college in a few months but still unsure of the path I want to take. I don have a lot of hobbies a side from reading and dancing.
• Is there a medical diagnosis that may impact your mental stability somehow?
I was diagnosed with GAD. These past month I have been having a lot of panics attacks and now, depression. One of the effects of how I cope with depression is Maladative daydreaming.
• Describe your upbringing. Did it have any kind of religious or structured influence? How did you respond to it?
I grew up in a well-off household, but was taken care of by a caretaker instead of my parents. I never took my parents as religious nor did I felt our household was religious. I remember my grandmother praying every night with the rosary but she's not very imposive of religious practices. That's why I was at awe when I told my mother I don't really belive there's a god and she got really angry at me. I'm agnostic now, I don't really care if there's a god or not, I have more important things to focus on than that.
• What do you do as a job or as a career (if you have one)? Do you like it? Why or why not?
I'm currently in my final year of high school (or in my country, SHS). I'm thinking of getting in the field of biomedical engineering. I've always knew I wanted to be in the field of medicine, but I have realized that I was not meant for the "service" part of it, rather more of the research and how to apply biology in medicine.
• If you had to spend an entire weekend by yourself, how would you feel? Would you feel lonely or refreshed?
I would feel refreshed. Maybe, a bit used to it? Though, there would probably be points where I feel lonely or scared, but then I'll realize that I enjoy more being alone when people are constantly around me. Especially, when I'm focusing on something.
• What kinds of activities do you prefer? Do you like, and are you good at sports? Do you enjoy any other outdoor or indoor activities?
I'm not very good at sports, the only sport I play was golf and I was okay at it. I definitely enjoy indoor activities for the most part, but I do love eating outside and exploring new restaurants.
• How curious are you? Do you have more ideas then you can execute? What are your curiosities about? What are your ideas about - is it environmental or conceptual, and can you please elaborate?
I feel like in a horror movie, once you leave me alone and I hear a sound, I'll definitely check it lol.
I think I like bringing my ideas to life. In a practical sense of having an idea to go somewhere to having a crazy idea on "what will happen if I do this and this?", and you'll definitely see me do it.
Well, my ideas ranges to anything that I find interesting really. I do have a huge interest biology and most specifically, medical biology and health physics.
• Would you enjoy taking on a leadership position? Do you think you would be good at it? What would your leadership style be?
I avoid leadership as much as possible, or all the time basically. Even though I probably should lead the group I usually just stay quiet and support the one leading the group if they need help.
I don't think I would be good at it, I'm not a decisive person at all, and on top of that I get easily anxious and think that I'm doing is wrong. Unless, I'm very confident of my ideas.
• Are you coordinated? Why do you feel as if you are or are not? Do you enjoy working with your hands in some form? Describe your activity?
I'm very clumsy, and I often feel a bit detached from what is happening around me. I do enjoy working with my hands, currently, I'm making an arts and craft object for my friend for her upcoming graduation and a gift. And I just feel at peace I guess when at some point I'm doing the same thing over and over again and I can space out for a bit.
• Are you artistic? If yes, describe your art? If you are not particular artistic but can appreciate art please likewise describe what forums of art you enjoy. Please explain your answer.
That's the one thing I am absolutely sure I am not. I do enjoy theater and music. I grew up with the influence of ballet when I was younger and everyone's dream around me is to be in theater. I guess, being surrounded by those influence and made me appreciate the little technicalities I see in those shows.
• What's your opinion about the past, present, and future? How do you deal with them?
My past is a mess, present is fine, and future is scary.
I always deeply regret that I could have done something more in the past, but present me is surviving and I consider that as fine. On the subject of the future, I'm scared of it, I'm scared of failing.
• How do you act when others request your help to do something (anything)? If you would decide to help them, why would you do so?
I'll definitely help them ASAP, I feel a bit responsible as someone they confided in for help.
• Do you need logical consistency in your life?
I'd say, I definitely do.
• How important is efficiency and productivity to you?
I do get satisfaction when something is done. Efficiency is of course very important for me, especially, in the things I need to do. Productivity is something that I feel good about, but there are days where I don't mind that it's not there.
• Do you control others, even if indirectly? How and why do you do that?
At some point, yes? I feel like I do control them in a sense if that something affects me and if I don't want to do something or for them do to something, I do meddle in.
• What are your hobbies? Why do you like them?
Reading, it feels like an escape from everything that's going on around me. While dancing is the same thing although more frustrating.
• What is your learning style? What kind of learning environments do you struggle with most? Why do you like/struggle with these learning styles? Do you prefer classes involving memorization, logic, creativity, or your physical senses?
I struggle the most with creativity, I feel like aside from I'm not a creative person, I feel like I'm doing something wrong. I do like logic and the application of it's theories, and memorization too.
• How good are you at strategizing? Do you easily break up projects into manageable tasks? Or do you have a tendency to wing projects and improvise as you go?
I'd say I'm okay at it? Not an expert at it. I like to do things as I go. So, if I feel like this is a task I should do, everything else follows.
• What are your aspirations in life, professionally and personally?
To finish my degree, get a scholarship from an another country for my masters, work in a lab, and make a good living.
• What are your fears? What makes you uncomfortable? What do you hate? Why?
I hate the dark, I hate what's in them. I'm also scared to fail, I don't want other people to pity me.
• What do the "highs" in your life look like?
Doing well academically, socially active, organized, and contented.
• What do the "lows" in your life look like?
Escaping reality, trying to off myself, and withdrawing from everyone.
• How attached are you to reality? Do you daydream often, or do you pay attention to what's around you? If you do daydream, are you aware of your surroundings while you do so?
When I daydream often, for me, it's a sign that things aren't doing well mentally. I try not to pay attention to the people around me, almost like it's intentional that I do that.
• Imagine you are alone in a blank, empty room. There is nothing for you to do and no one to talk to. What do you think about?
What will happen to me in this room? And I need to figure out why I am here.
• How long do you take to make an important decision? And do you change your mind once you've made it?
I am an indecisive person, but I do often change my mind on something if the other decisions start making sense for me.
• How long do you take to process your emotions? How important are emotions in your life?
It does take a while, I usually brush my feelings until I realize that it's on it's final leg. I do think emotion is needed, but too much is a burden.
• Do you ever catch yourself agreeing with others just to appease them and keep the conversation going? How often? Why?
It really depends on the topic. If it's just a non-serious or trivial topics, I just nod and don't bother replying at all to them, but if it's a serious one, I try to set my opinions and facts straight.
• Do you break rules often? Do you think authority should be challenged, or that they know better? If you do break rules, why?
At some point you're going to break rules in an institution. I don't actively or seek to break rules, but if the time comes and it's for the better, I will. Also, if the rules don't make sense, I don't even even try to follow it. I think authority should be challenged if there are people suffering or having a hard time under those rules.

2024.05.16 15:27 Electronic-Metal-412 brain defaults to another language during attack

Just reaching out to see if anyone else has experienced the same as me. I've had migraines since I was a teenager (in my late 20s now). As the title says, whenever I am suffering an attack, right from the aura all the way through, I find it much much more comfortable to speak and somewhat think in another language. When I was a teenager this was German, as it's what I learnt at the time, but now it's French (my partner'sl language). I have put effort into learning it, so I have a good grasp of words, but I still know less than in English. I'm wondering whether: a) My brain reaches for another language as I know less words in that language, so the "dictionary" of words to sift through is less b) the part of my brain that speaks English shuts down or struggles during an attack (I have lost the ability to remember English words in the past).
Has anyone else experienced this or know of any research on the topic?
Thanks!

2024.05.16 15:26 Ranma87 Tolong Survey: Do you usually trust if the green advertisement or product is really environmental friendly as it was claimed?

Hello fellow Nyets and beloved Malaysian~!
Needing your help because somehow it is really hard to find Malaysian participants when it comes to sustainability or green topics. :(
I am currently doing a research to check how much awareness Malaysian have when purchasing green or eco-friendly products. Do you just buy and trust it whenever it is green color and with words like 'eco', 'green', '100% natural', '0 this and that'? Or you think they are just bluffing and gimmicks?
I hope you can participate in my research anonymous survey. It will only take 5 - 10 minutes to answer them.
https://strathbusiness.qualtrics.com/.../SV_57trk4ohVZiU07Q
Your input not only helps us understand consumer awareness but could also inspire reflection on your everyday shopping decisions.
Thank you for your effort in making Malaysia a better and greener place!
Please feel free to share the survey with your friends. We can also discuss about this topic here, sharing experiences, and I can also answer any question that you have. :)

2024.05.16 15:16 Caroleena77 Are babies really incapable of learning or developing associations before 4 months?

Edit: I seem to have miscommunicated. My professional opinion is that babies are very much capable of learning from day one. I'm wondering where the idea that they aren't is coming from. The people I've heard it from seem to think it's research backed, and one was a pediatrician.
I'm a newborn care specialist (what used to be called a night nurse) and I often hear parents and pediatricians say that it's a known fact that babies can't learn or develop associations before 4 months. This is usually given as a reason to not try to teach them to sleep independently at all before that time. While I support waiting until 4 months for formal sleep training, in my personal experience babies are absolutely capable of learning from day one. I do a lot of work with the babies I work with to gently teach them to sleep independently, and most of them are sleeping through the night by 4 months. Anyone know what research is backing up the statement that babies can't learn before 4 months?

2024.05.16 15:09 julianw101040 Fifth life crisis in university and I don't know what to do

Currently I'm at university nearing the point of writing a bachelor thesis. I'm 20 years old. And I feel so helpless. It feels like I forgot why I chose to do a Bachelor of Computer Science in the first place. Writing a bachelor thesis. About what? I literally have no idea. I'm already only going to lectures because I got no life. Even to the lectures I like. I literally only go to them because I got nothing better to do in my free time. It's depressing. It is clear that I lost the *why* in studying Computer Science. Primarily I went to university to get a better social life because my school social life was bad. But seriously, expecting a better social life in Computer Science is definitely a funny thing.
I went to university because somehow, magically I expected that my life would turn around, that someone would "give" me a purpose. But the more and more attend higher classes at university, I start to see a problem: You don't go to university because someone tells you to. You go to university because you *want* to. That's where my fifth life crisis starts to begin.
In my first semesters all courses were mandatory. I had a pupose: If I didn't attend these courses, these lectures, don't submit my exercises, don't find a group for group work, I will have a problem. That problem is not passing these mandatory classes. There was a clear purpose. Like in school.
Then, I got into higher semesters. And I started to see a problem. For the first time I had the *choice* between different elective courses. *I* had the choice to choose something which interests me. This choice overwhelmed me so much that I was close of dropping out. It made me feel purposeless because there way no *why* in taking these courses, just out of an intrinsic motivation. No external pressure. I didn't have to submit exercises anymore. Sure there were still discussions about voluntary exercise sheets. But no grading, no submission, no feedback. No group work anymore, so the *only* social element of my life went away, too. It is hard. It is hard waking up in the morning and knowing you will be all alone in the lectures by yourself, then going alone to the cantine to eat, then going home alone to do *voluntary* exercises alone.
Somewhere, in late high school, until now, I lost every purpose in life, both non academically but also academically. I never managed to develop an intrinsic motivation. My parents always told me what to do. My school always told me what to do. But because of my autism, my adhd, I had ZERO idea what to do on my own, nor was I ever capable of social connections. So I either start to drown myself in academic work, or other addictive things. Both is not healthy.
Well, of course there was a purpose: These courses go to be able to write my bachelor. But why do a bachelor? And doing all the requiremenets just because of the bachelor feels dumb. Because I *had* to, not because I *wanted* to. I could also just write out a paper written as "[My name] is the king of the world" and that wouldn't make me feel better.
What is the purpose?
I don't want to go to university, leave university, just to get a paper handed out in the end where it's written "Firstname Surname got a bachelor in subject x", being a random number who did the bare minimum to pass all previous courses, did the bare minimum to write a bachelor thesis about a generic topic, who had no social life, no contact to anyone at university. You realise how depressing that is when you got no life outside university?
This sub is not about depression, I know. But my problems are twofold, of which a large part is having a universal fifth-life crisis, no clear purpose in "why" I go to university. I literally have no hobbies. No friends. No purpose in university. Let me get one thing straight: The subjects, or the difficulty, are not the problem. I'm in my 5th semester right now and didn't fail one exam once, even though I didn't went to any lecture last semester because I was fed up of isolating myself outside.
Why should I do anything, why should I do anything, studying, going to lectures, doing voluntary assignments, learning the content, asking questions in the lectures if I got no social life? No one to discuss the topics with, no one to talk about the amazing thing Computer Science is? Who cares what I know, what I am capable of, what my bachelor thesis is if no one reads it? If no one wants to listen to my opinions, my ideas? If I'm just a number?
I got no purpose! No intrinsic purpose! I *need* others to give me purpose. And that's bad for university. To me a life, at university, without a social element is purposeless. University *needs* interconnection, discussing ideas, exchanging ideas. I got neither of that, nor outside university.
How are you able to have an intrinsic motivation at university? How are people able to write papers? Alone? How is that physically possible? To me, sitting infront of my PC, alone, writing a Bachelor thesis, doing literature research, alone, on my PC, going, alone, to the library for literature sounds like the most DEPRESSING thing I have ever witnessed. How do people manage to do what? How do people manage to do things ALONE? Because they got a social net? People to talk to? I don't get it.
I see the point of my Bachelor thesis infront of my eyes and afterwards I see a gaping void in my life. It scares me. *What* to do after a Bachelor thesis, alone? Masters? Alone? Again 2 years of torture? Doing work at some random company? Alone? I don't want to be alone anymore. I'm tired of it. Sick of doing academic work alone. Sick of doing *anything* alone, outside, inside my apartment. Everywhere. It's so dumb. So pointless.
So, please tell me, *why* should I do *anything* at university out of an intrinsic motivation? *How* do you get an intrinsic motivation to do things at university?

2024.05.16 15:07 rfgamaral Permissions issue with shared folder between PVE and LXC, and then LXC and Docker Container

Hey folks,
I'm starting to take my first steps with Proxmox, and I've hit a roadblock that I'm not sure how to handle. I've researched this topic a bit, but can't really understand what I should do.
In my host (Proxmox VE) I have installed acme.sh (ACME Shell script) to generate certificates for my private domain that I use in my homelab (some endpoints have external access through Cloudflare). I'm doing this in the host because I'll need to share the certificates with multiple LXCs, and this way I only have to generate one wildcard certificate, and not multiple (per LXC that needs them).
Now I'm setting up an LXC for Docker, so that I can run some containerized applications, such as Traefik, to use as a reverse proxy for all my local services. My goal is to share the certificates on the host with the LXC, and then from the LXC to the Traefik Docker container.
I've figured how to share them:
Then, the Traefik configuration has something like this:
yml tls: certificates: - certFile: /etc/ssl/certs/example.com.pem keyFile: /etc/ssl/private/example.com.pem options: default: minVersion: VersionTLS12 sniStrict: true
But this is what I get when I look at the container logs:
ERR error="open /etc/ssl/private/example.com.pem: permission denied" filename=tls.yml providerName=file
The strange thing to me is that using the terminal, I can do this:
pct enter 101 docker exec -it traefik sh cat /etc/ssl/example.com/example.com.key
And I get the output, the root user inside the Traefik Docker container and read the file contents, but the traefik process cannot. What am I missing?

2024.05.16 15:00 aznpersuazion Is Software Engineering a Good Job in 2023?

To preface this post, I want to give the disclaimer that like many things, there is not a black and white answer the question. I'm writing this as an experienced tech professional, and the information provided is based on opinion.
To start with. A little bit of history..
The golden age of software engineering(and similar jobs) is over. At least for the next 5 - 10 years. I don't think this is an unpopular opinion. The reason why between the years of 2010 - 2022, these jobs exploded, was because of the boom of the internet for commercial and personal use.
This is different from the dotcom boom of 2000s, where the internet was just starting and most of the products being created were for basic things like: putting banking on the internet, putting videos on the internet, etc.
The boom in the 2010s was related to the widespread popularity of commercial and personal products. Things like Uber, Spotify, and Salesforce. With the sudden increased usage of the digital world, there were MILLIONS of companies rushing to create digital products.
However, we're starting to see the rise and fall of some of these products, millions of startups failings, and less VC funding. In case you don't know, VC stands for Venture Capital, which are basically investment companies that give money to other companies to help them grow and develop, in return for partial ownership of the company.
As the industry began to mature, successful companies started to emerge, and many more started to fail.
The present day..
Software engineering and like jobs will continue to be important, and there will be a high demands for these engineers. Nearly every company will still need a website, a place to manage their data, and people to manage their hardware. BUT.. the basic technologies they need to run their company will become more efficient. AND there will be less research and innovation because the a lot of the trial and error already occurred.
We're in a weird spot where the demand for workers is now decreasing from it's recent peaks, and the supply of workers is now increasing because of how all the benefits of being a software engineer in the past decade.
This has really unfortunate consequences for any recent graduates or others trying to break into the tech field. There are WAY more beginning career people than jobs available. Which is made even worse with the amount of layoffs there are, where mid-level employees are now having to settle for entry level jobs.
What can we do?
I have two pieces of advice for people interested in the topic, or wanting to break into the field but can't. Try breaking in from a adjacent field, where you can get some exposure to tech. Things that data entry, analytics(this can be finance, supply chain etc). Then try to learn as much as you can from the tech people at your company.
The second piece of advice. Go into a different field. Software engineering is not for everyone. You have to learn and understand some relatively complex topics, and it's becoming harder and harder to be competitive in the industry. Healthcare, supply chain, and many other industries are booming right now.
Understanding history, you can see that certain industries will rise and fall. For the near future, technology might be one of the harder careers to break into. Something like healthcare would be that's expected to grow exponentially. The average population of the world is getting older, as less and less people are wanting to have kids. There will be higher demand for healthcare professionals and healthcare technology.
Do your best to review and understand these trends, and hopefully you can create a good life and career. Best of luck!
