from PM Pashinyan's speech at Copenhagen Democracy Summit:

PASHINYAN: Democracy has indeed become a reality in Armenia. Before the 2018 Velvet Revolution, massive electoral frauds were the usual companion of elections in Armenia. There was no trust among the citizens that there was a real chance for them to elect the government.
Now the situation is totally different; citizens know that they are powerful enough to decide. The two general elections that were held in Armenia after the Velvet Revolution have been acknowledged as democratic, free, and competitive both by the Armenian society and the international community.
Armenia made huge progress in strengthening the democratic institutions, an achievement reflected in reputable democracy indexes:
(a) Now we are the 43rd in the Reporters Without Borders’ Freedom of Speech index, compared to 79th place in 2017.
(b) Categorized as having partially free internet in 2017 by Freedom House, now we enjoy the status of a country with free internet.
(c) In Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index, Armenia is now 62nd instead of 107th in 2017.
(d) In the Economist Intelligence Unit’s democracy index we are 84th compared to 111th in 2017.
In order to assess this progress, it's essential to note that alongside democratic reforms, Armenia has been contending with external security challenges: the 44-day war in Nagorno-Karabakh, Azerbaijan's invasion of Armenia in 2021 and 2022 and the occupation of over 200 km2 amid inaction by [Russia's] CSTO, the forced displacement of over 100,000 Armenians from Nagorno-Karabakh, have cast doubts among Armenian citizens weather democracy is the right choice. So, democracy needs to prove its efficiency while dealing with security, economic and humanitarian challenges.
We are pleased with the deployment of EU monitoring mission alongside the Armenian-Azerbaijani border, and we welcome EU’s decision to expand its capacity. On the other hand, we hope for the inclusion of Armenia into the European Peace Facility and in this regard, we rely on the support of all EU member states [Hungary].
A new set of commitments aimed at strengthening Armenia’s economic resilience, state institutions, and addressing the humanitarian needs of refugees has been taken on by the European Union and United States during the high-level meeting on April 5 in Brussels. The rapid and effective implementation of those commitments is of utmost importance.
Despite all the challenges, we believe that the real and most aspiring companion for democracy is lasting and sustainable peace. My government took the share of its responsibility for this. Recently we reached an agreement with Azerbaijan to launch the delimitation of our interstate borders on the basis of the Almaty Declaration of 1991. That means that during the delimitation we should simply reproduce the Soviet-era administrative borders. This is the implementation of the agreement reached in Prague in 2022. Now it is time to incorporate and reflect those agreements in the peace treaty and have it signed.
Another key point for our regional stability is the «Crossroads of Peace», project, initiated by my government. This project implies that Armenia and Azerbaijan restore and open transport and other communications in accordance with the sovereignty and jurisdiction of the countries through which they pass, and comply with the principles of equality and reciprocity. These elements of the concept were agreed upon during the July 2023 meeting with Ilham Aliyev and Charles Michel. //

... Politico reporter's Q&A with Pashinyan

REPORTER: [Ex-NATO leader] Anders Fogh Rasmussen called your neighbor an autocracy. You are in a very difficult geopolitical and geographical position. How do you solve the security problem in that environment?
PASHINYAN: I would not like to comment on the internal situation of our neighboring countries. Democracy fully corresponds to the mentality of our people. It is a strategy for our government, it is our political belief, it is also our political identity. The members of our political team have spent most of their lives fighting for democracy, the rule of law, and freedom of speech. Now we have the opportunity to realize all these values in our country.
The security situation was complicated because of the regional and global situation; the world order is collapsing at the moment. My assessment is, and I have had occasion to say this publicly, that the 2020 war was a prelude to further developments. And now the main issue is security.
What is our strategic point of view, how are we going to guarantee the security of our country? Recently, I gave a speech in our parliament, where I said that the most important tool for ensuring security is a foreign policy based on legitimacy. This is the reason why we so often speak about the 1991 Almaty Declaration.
It is very important that during the 2022 Prague meeting, two very important agreements were reached. Armenia and Azerbaijan recognize each other's territorial integrity and sovereignty on the basis of the Almaty Declaration and will use it as the basis for the border demarcation. This is the reason why I said that we are not drawing a new border, we just need to reproduce the existing one on the ground. This process is happening right now, and I hope that we will continue it steadfastly.
REPORTER: The border conflict that has occurred in recent years has had a negative impact on relations with Russia and Russia's role for Armenia. What would you say about this?
PASHINYAN: Armenia is a member of CSTO. We are officially a CSTO member, but I have announced that we have frozen our participation.
REPORTER: So are you still a member or...?
PASHINYAN: It is a matter for further discussion, but it is very important to record the current situation. A crisis arose in our relations after Azerbaijani troops invaded Armenia, and according to CSTO procedures, the Organization and its member states had to support Armenia in this situation. But even after the formal application, the CSTO refused to take any concrete steps, and in fact, that is the main reason for freezing our participation in the CSTO at all levels.
REPORTER: Do you expect the West to occupy the current vacuum and ensure your security?
PASHINYAN: We are diversifying our foreign relations in all spheres. Now we are developing defense cooperation with India, France, and other countries. We have a certain cooperation with the European Union because as I mentioned, we are happy about the deployment of the EU Civilian Observation Mission on the border. It is a civilian mission but in a way, it is a new factor for the security of our region. This is the first time that the European Union participates in the security agenda of Armenia.
REPORTER: Would you like to become an EU member?
PASHINYAN: We are waiting for the EU's decision to include Armenia in the European Peace Facility. We also hope to start visa liberalization negotiations, and last year I announced in the European Parliament that Armenia is ready to be as close to the European Union as the European Union deems it possible. This is our position.
REPORTER: Can you elaborate on what initiatives Armenia is taking in the fight against corruption?
PASHINYAN: We have made huge progress but have not eradicated corruption from Armenia. We must continue to be persistent in the agenda of democratic reforms. This is the reason why cooperation with the European Union is of utmost importance for us because today the European Union is our main partner in the implementation of our democratic reform agenda. We hope that the European Union, as well as the USA, will increase their support to Armenia in the implementation of democratic reforms, because, as I said, democracy is a strategy for us.
By the way, in 2019 we started a Strategic Dialogue with the USA, and today we see the strengthening of our cooperation with the European Union. We recently had a tripartite meeting with the participation of the USA, EU, and Armenia. It was an unprecedented format, where we adopted a huge agenda of institutional and economic reforms. It is also very important that we receive more tangible support from the EU and the US to address the humanitarian needs of the Nagorno Karabakh refugees because it is a very sensitive and emotional issue for us.
REPORTER: In which year would you like Armenia to become a member of the EU?
PASHINYAN: This year [as soon as possible]. //

former regime continues to hold protests and briefly shut down roads in Yerevan with demands for PM Pashinyan's resignation

ԳԼՈՒԽ 1
Dozens of participants were detained and released the same day for blocking roads. The detentions decreased from 170 on Monday to ~63 on Tuesday. They want Pashinyan to resign or to be impeached. The protest organizers visited universities to gather student supporters, some of whom joined them with a dance. The organizers also stopped by at a bakery where they were given free food.
A felony investigation was launched after a police vehicle, "with the sirens on", struck a reporter on the street. In another instance, an investigation was launched against a protester who brought a long sword. One other case was launched over alleged threats made on Facebook by a Galstanyan fan who wants scores of people to be beaten in dalans and exiled from Armenia, "մենակ էտ դեպքում էս սրբազան հողը կմաքրվի էս տեսակ շան ծնունդներից, ուրիշ ձև չկա!!!!"
ԳԼՈՒԽ 2
A ruling faction member of Yerevan City Council complained about "harassment" by opposition figures who are attempting to convince ruling party members to join the protests and the impeachment.
RULING MEMBER: That is not how it works. No one will join you with that conduct. People will join if they see you have a legitimate agenda with trustworthy leaders. Instead, you are "ethnically cleansing" the citizens of Armenia [referring to one opposition speaker telling non-Armenians to leave] և հեռու չէ են օրը երբ դուք գուցե ասեք որ հայ լինելու համար պետք է Հայկ նահապետից տեղեկանք բերել: //

Yesterday the protest co-organizer Archbishop Bagrat Galstanyan said he received a report suggesting that the Deputy Rector of Yerevan State University supposedly urged deans and others to retaliate against students who joined the protests. Galstanyan said he was unsure whether the report was true, but decided to read it out loud anyway. On Tuesday he rallied his supporters to the backyard of the University where he demanded to speak with the Deputy Rector for clarification.
The Deputy Rector went downstairs and greeted Galstanyan, who shook her hand but wouldn't let it go for an uncomfortably long period, prompting her to ask him to let go of her hand. The Deputy Rector declared that whatever Galstanyan read about her was a defamatory lie.
GALSTANYAN: I never believed it myself.
DEPUTY RECTOR: Then you should not have said out loud something you did not believe.
GALSTANYAN: Listen, there is a recorded fact...
DEPUTY RECTOR: Where is that "recorded fact"?
GALSTANYAN: It was on the media. As I said yesterday, I had no verification that it was true, which is why we came here to clarify it. If it's false, then I apologize.
DEPUTY RECTOR: Thank you. //
The Deputy Rector urged the protest organizers not to enter the building or disrupt the classes, and that "anyone who wants to follow you can follow you, anyone who wants to stay in classrooms should stay in classrooms".
The angry Deputy Rector left. Another university official criticized Galstanyan for not checking the information before reading it to his followers. Galstanyan said he stands behind his words, and that he was "just reading what was on the media", but reiterated that he had no intention to insult the Deputy Rector.
ԳԼՈՒԽ 4
Galstanyan and his supporters visited the monument dedicated to Operation Nemesis. He praised the figures behind Nemesis for "assuming personal responsibility". In front of the crowd, Galstanyan introduced Hambig Sassounian who recently joined his movement. He pointed to the Nemesis monument and said Sassounian is "one of the successors, one of the brightest people." In related news, on Sunday a ruling faction MP complained about receiving death threats with reference to Operation Nemesis.
ԳԼՈՒԽ 5
DANIEL IOANNESIAN (NGO chief): When this protest dies down, we need to discuss the following: (1) The transparency of political and media funding. There are some regulations in place, but they are incomplete and easily bypassed. For example, I'd like to know who paid for Archbishop Galstanyan's giant stage in Republic Square. In 2018 Pashinyan organized a fundraising for it and disclosed a detailed report. (2) Should the media organizations that do not respect the rules of financial transparency enjoy all the mechanisms for the protection of journalists? (3) Are the customs authorities confident that the church is not facilitating the business activities of certain figures disguised as donations? (4) Is it fair for the church and clergy members not to pay taxes? Should they be able to have a Bently and LX570 without paying taxes? [The "Bentley" is based on a true story.]

The law will require organizations receiving more than 20% of their funding from abroad to register as “agents of foreign influence” or face crippling fines.
The bill will be sent to the President who is expected to veto it, but her veto is expected to be overruled by the parliamentary majority later.
Georgian PM Kobakhidze had an "honest conversation" with U.S. deputy foreign minister James O'Brien, telling him that the Georgian government is interested in deepening the partnership with the U.S., "which requires mutual efforts and relations based on fairness."
James O'Brien demanded to speak with the manager - Bidza Ivanishvili. The latter refused to meet O'Brien, saying he won't hold any meetings under "blackmail".
The White House said the U.S. will review its relations with Georgia if the bill becomes law.

1964 Election Results

Presidential
Liberal candidate John Kennedy receives 115 electoral votes
Margaret Smith received 38.57% of the vote
John Kennedy received 20% of the vote
Henry Jackson received 41.43% of the vote
Jackson defied poll numbers
While polling has consistently showed the election as a close race, almost all polls had the incumbent President, Margaret Smith, winning by 1 or 2 points up until the election. The last poll conducted on October 28th had Smith leading by 1 point, and Kennedy far behind both major candidates. Some have already begun to blame the Liberal Party and Kennedy for stealing moderate voters from another Republican victory. Regardless, The ever-ambitious Senator Scoop Jackson will enter the White House come January 20th.

The Revenue Act of 1965 would take a more progressive approach to taxation, increasing income taxes up to 7% in the highest tax bracket; all while lowering income taxes down by 4% for lower income households. The Act would also increase the Social Security Tax to 8%.
House voted 228-207
Senate voted 52-48
Mass Transit Tax Act of 1965
The second Mass Transit Tax Act would lower short range rail and air transport by an average of 5%, while increasing long range rail and air transport by an average of 2%. International flight tickets would be increased as well, by an average of 6%.
House voted 236-199
Senate voted 62-38
Minimum Wage Act of 1965
The long-standing federal Minimum Wage of $0.80/hour has been around since 1949, with no increase on the federal side of things. President Jackson and other Laborites were able to pull their weight and increase the federally-mandated minimum wage to $1.30/hour. Although the Labor Party advocated for a higher hourly wage, others in Congress feared a wage any higher would result in another economic panic following the near-collapse of the National Debt Ceiling a few years prior.
House voted 227-208
Senate voted 52-48
Department of Health Foundation Act of 1965
Founded the Department of Health and Welfare to help administer and regulate various healthcare practices and the distribution of Social Security, medical tax breaks, and more. Though indirectly, Congress soon changes the Executive budget to cut the Department of the Interior's funding by 40%; most of that money going into the new Department of Health and Welfare.
House voted 249-186
Senate voted 64-36
National Environmental and Water Policy Act of 1965 (NEWPA)
Championed heavily by the President and young members of the Labor Party in Congress like Edmund Muskie, NEWPA places greater regulations and laws into place regarding water safety and treatment, water pollution, trash allocation, dump sites, and recycling; unseen since the progressive era of the early 1900s. These regulations are expected to greatly improve the environmental state of decay for decades to come.
House voted 221-214
Senate voted 54-46

Death of former President, Theodore F. Green: May 19, 1966

This morning, former President Theodore Francis Green passed away in his Rhode Island home at the age of 98, marking the oldest President at the time of his death. Green was a member of the Democratic Party and briefly the Anti-Fascist Alliance, taking charge from his previous position as Secretary of State after the sudden assassinations of sitting President Earl Browder and Vice President Upton Sinclair. President Green helped uncover the “Business Plot” orchestrated in part by J.P. Morgan Jr. and Prescott Sheldon Bush Sr, the latter being the father of sitting Texas Congressman George Bush.
President Theodore F. Green led us through the horrors of the second world war after the sudden attack on Pearl Harbor, resigning his post and organizing a special election the year following the conclusion of the war itself. He was instrumental in the foundation of the United Nations and eventual foundation of both NATO and EATO two Presidents later. He was, and still remains a national hero in our hearts. President Henry Jackson, among former Presidents and dignitaries are expected to show up for his public funeral in Providence, Rhode Island. The public has been allowed to pay their respects at his grave site before his proper burial et to take place from May 19 at 9:00 AM to May 20 at 9:00 AM.

Foreign Policy Ventures prior to the 1966 Midterms

Embargo Act of 1965
Supported already by the majority of the country, Scoop Jackson directed Congress to pass a full embargo of all raw and manufactured Cuban goods on entering the United States through any port or checkpoint.
House voted 313-122
Senate voted 76-24
With the law being signed by the President in August that year, he would make a speech in Miami celebrating the passage of the act, glorifying its protections of American, anti-communist goods. Scoop would face some backlash over his anti-communist posturing, as the Labor Party has a small (but noticeable) sect of Communists in their ranks.
The Saigon Summit
In July of 1965, after riots against the French government in Saigon, and the breakout of a guerrilla war in French Cambodia, a summit was called in Saigon to determine the future of the city. President Jackson, President Ho Chi Minh, and President Charles de Gaulle met within the French administrative building to discuss the recent riots in the city and future between Saigon and Vietnam. Although much of Vietnam was granted total independence from French rule in 1950, French Saigon remained a thorn in Vietnam's side. France wished to keep as much of its dying empire as possible, and no one would fight harder at that than Charles de Gaulle himself. President Jackson wished to keep the peace and eventually coerce Vietnam into rejoining EATO.
Talks were messy at times, as yelling could be heard from the chambers the talks were being held in, but the three would come to an agreement. Saigon would be administered by a joint Vietnamese-French government, and policing and law would gradually transition to local and Vietnamese systems. In return, Vietnam would promise to not get itself involved in the Cambodian guerilla war.

Invasion of Saigon

In December 1966, a clash between Vietnamese and French police during a riot led the Vietnamese side of the Saigon Transitional Government to call on Vietnamese military aid. Within hours, the Republic of Vietnam marched into the jointly occupied city. Rumors immediately began amassing that the Saigon police force worked with the Vietnamese government in order to cease Saigon before the transitional period was up. Although these rumors were just that, President Jackson was surely worried when the news hit him the next morning; alongside the French Ambassador asking for an audience with the President.
French Ambassador Hervé Alphand would share with Scoop three things:
  1. France intends to treat the invasion of Saigon as an act of war.
  2. France is already mobilizing troops to southern Cambodia for a naval invasion of Vietnam.
  3. France intends to call on the force of NATO and EATO to defend “France in her hour of need.”
No matter how Jackson tried to argue, Alphand was keen on these points. Jackson would argue that the incident be investigated by the United Nations to determine whether it was an act of war; while Alphand threatened that American delay on the issue could lead to French withdrawal from both NATO and EATO. Jackson, reportedly furious, refused to be threatened by a “dying empire”. He denied meeting with any French foreign dignitary for the time being until they promised to allow the UN for an investigation.
The French response was quick, with France officially leaving both NATO and EATO on December 18, 1966. The French declaration of war and further campaign into Vietnam began on the 20th. With naval and air landings concentrated around Rach Gia, Can Tho, My Tho, Saigon, and Vung Tau, the Second Indochina War began. Although Australia would provide weapon assistance, the other nations within both NATO and EATO held their breath on what to do. France had left the two most powerful military and economic alliances in the world, and President Jackson could not be more angry.

Glasgow Conference of 1967

With the war having gone on for nearly three months, and French military forces having begun to get bogged down by the Vietnamese harsh tactics; Can Tho remained the only major French-held territory in the young Republic. And although Vietnamese war tactics were questionable at best; much of the world was united in believing the French declaration of war was not entirely justifiable; with President Scoop Jackson and General Secretary Leonid Brezhnev at the forefront of organizing peace efforts within and without the UN. Although the United Nations have begun investigations into both the Vietnamese invasion of Saigon and the French declaration of war, they both had gotten bogged down by the surrounding war effort.
It was agreed upon by several major powers to meet in Glasgow with French and Vietnamese delegates to discuss an armistice. The United States, United Kingdom, Soviet Union, and the People’s Republic of China agreed to enforce the following terms:
  1. Saigon and surrounding territories that formerly made up the French Vietnam Territory following the 1950 Treaty of Manila shall be ceded to the Republic of Vietnam. Saigon and the surrounding territories shall become a United Nations sponsored demilitarized zone until an official peace treaty between the 5th Republic of France and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam.
  2. French military and bureaucratic personnel shall be allowed free and safe passage out of the cities of Can Tho and Saigon; sanctioned by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force. The French and Vietnamese governments must release all prisoners of war; sanctioned by the United Nations Peacekeeping Force.
  3. Saigon officials implicated in the initial invasion of the city on December 16, 1966 must release all official, personal, and private documents to the United Nations Office of Legal Affairs for investigation.
  4. Vietnam must retain its promise from the 1964 Saigon Summit to not aid or abet Cambodian guerilla forces or rebels.
  5. All combat between the 5th Republic of France and the Socialist Republic of Vietnam shall cease and abide by the above rules, the United Nations, and Geneva Conventions.
Although both nations had much to say and change in their favor, the above is the final version of the armistice agreed upon by all parties. The armistice paper was signed by:
  • President Henry Martin Jackson of the United States
  • General Secretary Leonid Ilyich Brezhnev of the Soviet Union
  • Prime Minister James Harold Wilson, Baron Wilson of Rievaulx of the United Kingdom
  • Chairman Mao Zedong of the People's Republic of China
  • Foreign Minister Ernest Charles Lucet of the 5th French Republic
  • Foreign Minister Nguyên Duy Trinh of the Socialist Republic of Vietnam
Military Aftermath of the Second Indochina War:
  • 57,000 KIA (66% Vietnamese)
  • 12,000 MIA (81% French)
  • 72,000 WIA (52% French)
  • 134,000 Civilians KIA/MIA (89% Vietnamese)
Although the Glasgow Conference was seen as a great triumph of diplomacy between the major powers, Taiwan (the Republic of China) was greatly hindered in its geopolitical influence for the time being. President Jackson had recognized the People’s Republic of China the week prior to the Conference; Communist China would replace Taiwan's spot as a permanent member of the UN Security Council within the month.

The Better Society Plan

Plans drawn up between Pro Tempore Lyndon Johnson, Representative Claude Pepper, and Speaker Adam Powell Jr. would be taken to the President's desk following the first relatively calm year in the administration's history. Although much of the work on marketing the plan would be placed on Scoop himself; Johnson, Pepper, and Powell would act as the main sponsors of each piece in Congress. What would become the beginnings of the “Better Society Plan” would officially pass both houses of Congress throughout mid 1968.
Cheap Food and Housing Act of 1968
A large bill authored primarily by Speaker Adam Powell Jr. and Secretary Hubert Humphrey; the Cheap Food and Housing Act would cover extensive social programs. Although, with weak support in Congress, many Republicans were able to push to soften these programs and add their own agendas on top of them. The final contents of this massive bill were as follows:
  1. A federal Food Stamps program would begin and be administered and funded by the Department of Health and Welfare. Certain imported foodstuffs would receive a 15% higher tariff. All American citizens that either fall below or are less than 6% above the poverty line would be eligible for the Food Stamps program.
  2. Store-bought meat products will receive price controls to fit the monthly income of the average family. The Federal Government will cut 60% funds toward GMO Agriculture, Meat, Fish, and Poultry research.
  3. Houses that take up less than a certain area size will be price capped based county-by-county income. This job is in the hands of State Governments. (Apartments are not covered in this)
  4. Housing discrimination shall be made illegal based on identity.
House voted 241-194
Senate voted 53-47
Medical Bill Reduction Act of 1968
This bill was authored by Representative Claude Pepper and Secretary John Gardner in order to fundamentally reduce medical expenses for the youth, elderly, and medically unable. The bill however was weakened significantly by the Republicans in Congress, only allowing for those receiving Social Security benefits to have reduced medical expenses paid for partially by the Department of Health and Welfare; no matter if the recipient is signed on with private insurance or the Public Option.
House voted 220-215
Senate voted 53-47

Apollo 8: Americans on the Moon in November 1968!

Thanks to streamlined efforts by Presidents Dwight Eisenhower and Margaret Smith the past 11 years, NASA and furthermore America were able to place the first men on the moon on November 12, 1967. In a speech made on national television that night in the hour following the conclusion of the live coverage of the moon landing, Scoop Jackson would put much of his thanks on the “Greatest mind our nation has ever had,” referring to Dr. J. Robert Oppenheimer. Oppenheimer, since 1961, has been placed in a secondary charge of the Apollo missions and a potential moon landing until his resignation in January 1967 and death the following month. Dr. Oppenheimer's expertise in theory and former President Smith's dedication for space exploration are likely candidates as to the victory America achieved that night.

The United Nations has concluded their investigation into the potential legality and coercion in the events leading up to the invasion of Saigon.
“While France has made compelling arguments for the contrary, regarding available documents and other pieces of evidence, the Vietnamese military occupation of Saigon was not a result of coercion, manipulation, embezzlement, bribery, or corruption within the Republic of Vietnam. The invitation of Vietnamese armed forces into the territory limits was done by the legal Vietnamese co-government of said territory, and therefore, is deemed a semi-legal occupation of the city. The United Nations upholds the results of the Glasgow Conference.”

Gearing up for Reelection: A look at Potential Challengers

Notable Republicans that have declared candidacy
Former Vice President, Richard Nixon
https://preview.redd.it/s64vumfxub0d1.jpg?width=3739&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1bff3f91005f9ed3559abb1334db75eac181ae75
Richard Nixon is back at it with his 4th attempt at a Presidential run, and if he wins the nomination or is selected as a running mate, 3rd attempt on a Presidential ticket. He is generally a moderate, but is definitely the wildcard. Despite his past of losing elections, he is somehow the safest, and perhaps most dangerous, to the Jackson administration.
Governor Ronald Reagan
https://preview.redd.it/bjb887w4vb0d1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7cdd34a9a2caf74d4b7b2a18233bc141bc975e20
The Governor of California has perhaps one of the most charismatic voices in the nation, and is definitely a threat should he receive the Republican nomination. While he is charismatic, he is also the most Conservative of the major players for the Republican nomination. Reagan has instituted a mix of conservative and liberal policy as Governor of California, but has spouted rhetoric like all the former dixiecrats; just without blatant racism. Scoop believes Reagan is not only a credible threat to his Presidency, but also a threat to minority groups nationwide.
“Draft Jack Kennedy” and “Draft Bobby Kennedy”
https://preview.redd.it/s601w5x9vb0d1.jpg?width=1440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5b99970534ba3ec17d1e7147231d0b5b45ad22e3
Despite neither Kennedy having decided to throw their hat in the ring this year, 1960 and 1964 Presidential candidate John Kennedy has received some support among anti-nixon moderates for the head of the ticket later this year. He has an air of charisma around him, much like his fellow Republican Ronald Reagan, but Kennedy has only commented on the matter stating he is “far too tired” for 3 Presidential runs in a row. The Senator's health is seemingly beginning to fail, as well. Despite the unlikeliness of the matter, Jackson is prepared to deal with Jack Kennedy again if he wins a draft.
Opposed to his older brother, Governor Robert Kennedy has remained Non-Partisan since the fall of the Liberal Party 3 years prior. Bobby has had moderate support from both parties since the beginning of his governorship in 1963. Despite this, and probably with wishes to go against one of his brothers, Bobby Kennedy has denied to run or entertain a draft movement in his name. Scoop has declared Bobby to be of little threat.
Other potential challengers
Senator Russel Long
https://preview.redd.it/vazyz7xevb0d1.jpg?width=223&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=4693e838065dc8a3f31cf21f5d3cb8bece24dfc6
The long-serving Senator and son of former President Huey Long has walked the line of conservative, liberal, and progressive support throughout his career. In recent years, he has become more supportive of progressive social policies, and definitely leans economically toward Labor; but his reach across rural southerners matches a more populist approach. Long has already declared his independent candidacy for President. If Nixon isn't one, Long is certainly the most dangerous wildcard if he plays his hand right. Scoop will closely watch him.

USD/CNH: AUD, NZD, JPY face hammering if Asia’s FX anchor comes loose. May 14, 2024
By : David Scutt, Market Analyst
  • The Chinese yuan is trading at multi-year highs against the currencies of its major trading partners
  • This strength has helped to counteract rampant US dollar strength, preventing larger losses for Asian FX names in 2024
  • With the risk of an escalating trade war with the US, Chinese policymakers may be tempted to weaken the yuan to help with exporter competitiveness
  • A revival of large-scale Fed rate cuts bets may provide respite for battered Asian FX names
If you trade Asian currencies like the Japanese yen, Australian or New Zealand dollar, you should always keep a close eye on what’s happening in the Chinese yuan. Especially this week. Because with trade wars between China and the United States set to erupt again, and with a raft of top tier US economic data scheduled, what happens in USD/CNH will be highly influential for other Asian currencies.

CNH performance influential on JPY, AUD & NZD

As the currency of the world’s second largest economy rising rapidly up the ranks of the most traded FX names worldwide, you’re doing yourself a disservice if the Chinese yuan is not on your radar. As seen in the chart below, for large periods of time, movements in USD/CNH have often been mirrored by USD/JPY, AUD/USD and NZD/USD.
https://preview.redd.it/yd4hx6wmpa0d1.png?width=1835&format=png&auto=webp&s=bf1aa3b7d74c44631915dc68559b0a17b9c43846
Up until recently, USD/CNH and USD/JPY had a positive correlation in the high 0.8s on a rolling quarterly basis. For AUD/USD and NZD/USD, negative correlations above -0.9 were regularly observed over the same timeframe during the past year.
While the common denominator is the US dollar, with its movements influential across the entire FX market, what is not readily known right now is the Chinese yuan is not weak but strong when you look at its performance against a basket of currencies from its major trading partners, hitting levels not seen October 2022 in April. It’s only really been weakening against the greenback.

CNH an anchor for Asian FX names

Even though it’s not been enough to offset the impact of the strong US dollar entirely, measures from the People’s Bank of China (PBOC) to curb market forces seeking to weaken the yuan against the dollar have likely helped limit losses in other Asian FX names against the big dollar, making the yuan somewhat of an anchor for currencies in the region. Hence, if this anchor were to come loose, it’s very likely Asian FX names would be hammered.
One only needs to look back to the yuan devaluation episode in 2015 to what may happen. And that was when the yuan’s influence was considerably smaller than it is today.

Trend breakdown may explain weakening relationships

While the yuan has often had strong relationships with the likes of the JPY, AUD and NZD, that’s faded somewhat in recently. Rather than being less influential on currencies across the region, the breakdown of strong established trends in other asset classes may explain the waning relationship, resulting in choppy price action as traders and investors wait for definitive signals as to which direction markets will move next.
When new trends become established, it would be surprising if the relationship between the yuan and other Asia FX names does not strengthen again.

Trade war risk adds to devaluation threat

If you’re looking for a major catalyst that could spark a trend change, look no further than the threat of an escalating trade war between the United States and China.
If media reports are on the money, US President Joe Biden will quadruple tariffs on Chinese made electric vehicles and sharply increase levies for other green energy industries in an announcement later Tuesday, opening the door for other western governments to do the same given a concerted push to foster local green initiatives.
As mentioned above, Chinese policymakers have been pushing back against market forces seeking to weaken the yuan, setting the midpoint of the USD/CNY daily trading band far stronger than market forces would imply for months on end.
While not a certainty, the threat posed to China’s trade-exposed sectors from greater import barriers abroad, at a time when policymakers are fighting to prevent the yuan from weakening further, you don’t have to be Einstein to see why authorities may be temped to devalue the yuan to support its export sector.
If China were to go down that path, it would likely lead to a rapid appreciation in the US dollar, generating substantial volatility not only in Asian FX names but broader financial markets. As such, watching the daily USD/CNY fix may be advantageous near-term. If a devaluation episode were to occur, it would likely be initiated at the start of onshore yuan.

USD bull case also its biggest threat

Outside the threat posed by trade wars, the other potential catalyst than could spark a trend change comes from the US economic data calendar with CPI, PPI and retail sales figures for April released over the next 48 hours.
For the US dollar, uncomfortably sticky inflationary pressures have been a major factor behind its strength this year, combining with strong, above-trend economic growth to delay the start of the Federal Reserve’s rate cutting cycle.
https://preview.redd.it/48iobvyrpa0d1.png?width=1835&format=png&auto=webp&s=db6418194004169e8f6dfd4feaaccb9c3b1d6067
With these factors part of an established trend, markets now expect it, helping to prevent sustained periods of weakness from occurring. However, now that the number of rate cuts priced in 2024 has fallen from nearly seven to less than two, it’s now up to the data to keep feeding the prevailing narrative. If it doesn’t – as seen when nonfarm payrolls and ISM services data whiffed earlier this month – it can result in an abrupt weakness in the US dollar.
The more data that disappoints, the greater the risk it may encourage traders to unwind bullish bets and result in sustained dollar weakness. In other words, good news is arguably already priced in.

USD/CNH technical outlook

Adding to the sense that this week may be important for broader directional risks for Asian FX names, USD/CNH sits at an interesting juncture on the daily chart, threatening to surge straight back into the uptrend it was trading in for much of the year.
https://preview.redd.it/i3p101rypa0d1.png?width=1835&format=png&auto=webp&s=e9746fc6e2cce9745a4fe15e33e299736adce5cb
The bounce from the lows struck Friday two weeks ago has been powerful, seeing USD/CNH do away with two horizontal resistance levels at 7.2200 and 7.2335 before breaking through and closing above the 50 and 200-day moving averages on Monday.
With the downtrend in RSI threatening to break and MACD crossing over from below, directional risks look to be turning higher for USD/CNH. Aside from former uptrend support and horizontal resistance around 7.2550, there’s not a lot standing between USD/CNH and return to levels seen in late 2023.
While buying dips looks preferable to selling rallies near-term, it may pay to see how the price action evolves around these levels over the next 48 hours given ample event risk.
Another push and the pair will be back in its former uptrend, allowing for fresh longs to be established targeting a move towards the 2024 highs. A stop order placed below either the trendline or 50/200DMA zone would offer protection against reversal.
Alternatively, should the price fail to hold above the 50 and 200DMA, stops could be placed above this zone, allowing for fresh short positions to be established targeting a retracement towards 7.1730.
Either way, if we do see a meaningful directional shift in the yuan, it’s likely the Japanese yen, Aussie and New Zealand dollars will be following close behind.

I will say if you go back and look, it's declassified now, and I'm sure you all have your classified briefings, but the declassified information now:
In September of 2019, three things happened in that lab, one is they deleted the sequences, that was highly irregular, researchers don't usually like to do that
Second thing they did was they changed the command and control of the lab from the civilian control to the military control. Highly unusual, and I've been involved in dual use labs when I was in the military.
And the third thing they did which I think is really telling is they let a contractor redo the ventilation system in that laboratory. So I think clearly there was strong evidence that there was a significant event that happened in that laboratory in September. It's now been declassified, you can read it. I'm sure there's more classified information around it.

The relevance of this is that SARS Cov-2, the pandemic virus, is the only virus in its entire genus of SARS-related coronaviruses that contains a fully functional cleavage site at the S1, S2 junction. And here is a proposal from the beginning of 2018 [from Fauci/Gates-funded EcoHealth Alliance] proposing explicitly to engineer that sequence at that position in chimeric lab- generated coronaviruses.

When I first saw the furin cleavage site in the viral sequence, with its arginine codons, I said to my wife it was the smoking gun for the origin of the virus. These features make a powerful challenge to the idea of a natural origin for SARS2.
Former CDC Director Robert Redfield:
I was concerned because of the presence of the furin cleavage site that we've talked about and I think it's important to understand what that cleavage site does. That cleavage site totally changes the orientation of the binding domain of COVID, so where before it could not see the ACE2 receptor which is the human receptor, it totally changes the orientation now so it has high affinity for human receptors. So that furin cleavage site bothered me, it didn't seem like it belonged there.
And then if you look at the sequences they use in those 12 nucleotides for arginine, where the arginine sequence nucleotide triplet were coded for humans. So why did it have the arginine coding for humans and not bat? It was very disconcerting to me. It looked like this virus was engineered.
It's not scientifically plausible that this virus went from a bat to humans and became one of the most infectious viruses that we have for humans.
Scientist Valentin Bruttel:
I tried to raise awareness to this for a year now. WIV use BsaI and BsmBI/Esp3I sites before to make synthetic WIV1 variants. And exactly those sites appear in a "silently introduced, perfect for synthetic assembly" pattern in SARS2, but non of its nat. relatives.
seriously, what is the chance that exactly those type IIs restriction appear or disappear through random evolution in a Banal-20-52 like virus? 5-6 precise mutations in 30000bp? about 1 in 1020! SARS2 is clearly synthetic!
Type Ils restriction sites prove a synthetic origin
Synthetic RNA viruses are assembled at the DNA level and later transcribed. 30,000 nucleotides cannot be synthesized in one go. These viruses are therefore assembled from smaller, 2- 8,000 nucleotide long pieces. Specific DNA restriction sites are often added to later reassemble the individual building blocks in the correct order. It is also technically possible to hide these interfaces (No See'em), but this was not done in the WIV.
In a 2017 paper, two very specific, particularly suitable type Ils restriction enzymes were used at the WIV. These have the advantage that they can produce different DNA overhangs (sticky ends), which are crucial for a correct assembly of the complete genome: Bsal and BsmBI.
SARS2 shows a Bsal and BsmBI restriction site pattern which is ideal for assembling synthetic viruses and to later replace the spike protein or furin cleavage site.
Bsal and BsmBI restriction sites also exist in closely related viruses (Banal20-52, RaTG13), but these are distributed in such a way that an artificial virus could never be generated using the methods established at WIV 2018/19.
The probability that the required 5 synonymous mutations, which enable a synthetic assembly of SARS2, arose purely by chance is less than 1 in 1020 or about as likely as winning the lottery jackpot 3 times in a row.

9. Is there a big market rising in Bitcoin halving in 2024?

Leave a Comment / By WeishaZhu / February 4, 2023

——Answers to the concepts in the article “Invite Satoshi Nakamoto to Welcome the New World”
9.1 Compared with the Dow Jones index and gold, Bitcoin is the weakest
9.2 Mainstream funds are tightening, and Bitcoin has no water to
No U. S. stock market significant rising at the end of 2024
Funding Decide for Bitcoin to Recover to Highs
9.3 Attracting mainstream funds determines the fate of the halving market in 2024
What is the third story?
we only have dreams
written in the back
After Q&A No. 8, “How to value Bitcoin, starting from the failure of the PlanB model,” was published, some readers felt “deafening,” their original beliefs collapsed, and they felt misled by the opinion leaders. Their low tide persistence is waiting for the arrival of the big bull market in 2024. If there is no bull market, it will not survive. So ask me where the pessimistic basis for judging the halving of Bitcoin in 2024 comes from. And what should be done? What to do varies from person to person, so I don’t make the random opinion.
It is right to tell the basis. My method is the logic of stock market analysts, not the wild guessing prediction of PlanB. The method is based on the existing facts and establishes a comparison object for analysis and inference. What is prone to the controversy here is the selection of comparison objects. First of all, is Bitcoin comparable? A comparison desecrates the sacred status of Bitcoin, just as we cannot desecrate religion. The second is whether currencies and commodities are the objects of comparison; I looked at the relevant charts carefully and selected gold and US stocks as comparison objects according to the principle of correlation. It is my analysis’s conclusion and is for reference only.
9.1 Compared with the Dow Jones index and gold, Bitcoin is the weakest
We want to make predictions about Bitcoin for the next one to two years. According to the stock market practice, we need to use monthly indicators. Figure 1 is the monthly line of Bitcoin.
The entire second halving cycle lasted from July 2016 to May 2020 and reached a high point in 2017 and never reached the high point of this cycle after 2017. The second halving started in July 2016; the real upswing was in June 2017, and the consolidation took nearly a year. The market rise driven by the ICO ( initial coin offering) has attracted many funds and users from outside the circle.
The starting point for the third halving in May 2020 was $9452, and the market started in October 2020 which lasted only 5 months. October 2020 is the market for the Fed to release water. Bitcoin’s high of $69,000 was created in November 2021. The low for this round was $15440 in November 2022. This low is below the December 2017 high of $19,891 and slightly above the 2017 close of $13,800. Counting the transaction volume is difficult because there are too many exchanges.
The two forms are Bitcoin halving market, but the reasons are entirely different, and the time when the market starts is also different. There is no possibility of a mechanical analogy. When described with the model of PlanB, it becomes a purely mathematical problem and downplays the reasons, which is, of course, wrong. In order to illustrate this problem, we posted Figure 2, showing the US Dow Jones monthly line, and Figure 3, showing the monthly trend of gold.
Figure 1 Bitcoin monthly indicators

In March 2020, the Federal Reserve began to rescue the market. The U.S. stock Dow Jones rose from $18,213 in March to $35,360 in August 2021. After that, it stopped moving and then consolidated at a high level. The rise continued until January 2022, hitting a new high of $36,952.

2024.05.13 04:07 EarthInternational9 Do you know who got access to potential time machine? My ex. He bragged to guy I broke up with in 1990 that he got to molest his own kid (I didn't) & that I let him make $ (I didn't) because that 1990 guy THOUGHT I aborted his baby. They may have created the most toxic timelines for children. EVER.

Will anyone have the courage to stop them? Why did people LET them have access to a time machine? Did they volunteer for all timelines to collapse because they want a society that is "ok" with sodomy of more boys and rape of more little girls doesn't make anyone (but me) upset anymore? Is that the future people want? To see more kids in brothel instead of schools? To see more women in brothels instead of having careers or college degrees?
Dear world, I think you volunteered to commit suicide for believing men who said I wanted my kids raped and/or killed. Dear world, I think you died because of a board game about war that revolved around me. I don't want so many people's lives to revolve around me. I'm angry at everyone. One kid= one man who told me Irish background. Two kids= different man who told me Indian background. Are both identity frauds, or just one?
Federal government definitely took the machine from the wrong guy and gave to the wrong guy. World government was exceptionally foolish as well.
I'm angry because nobody ever believes me or asks me face to face IF I EVER AGREED to horrible crap. I HATE that people get so emotional to pretend that I wanted to be poor or dependent on stupidest poverty level disability benefits instead of wealthy. I hope you all die in timeline collapse or correction because my life was turned horrible by a handful of obsessed men and women. I didn't do that much wrong in my life except follow bad advice in my 20's. I corrected my path. I went opposite of what I had done wrong. NONE of my family had the courage to ask me!
I hope entire world dies because you hurt me so deeply and you knew, but wouldn't stop using the machine (or other tech) to do bad things to me!!! You don't deserve to use a possible time machine or even deserve to use tech to do harm to others!

2024.05.13 03:35 winterbyrne Koiranos, kyranos, cyranos? IPA question for a novelist.

Hello,
I have hit a bit of a snag on an IPA thing with Ancient Greek and was hoping for a quickie explanation.
Background: I am working on a fantasy novel that is inspired by West Asian and Eastern European elements (architecture, literature, etc). It's not set on Earth, it's just when I was in school I was studying West Asia and wanted to make it my area of specialization, but I became too ill to continue. So this is a way for me to still interact with the material. West Asia was quite diverse, and while the main character speaks several languages, Greek is not one of them, and my strategy is to transliterate based on sounds she recognizes.
So I'm trying to figure out an alternative leadership title for an autocratic ruler. I wanted to avoid very recognizable Roman titles like Imperator and Byzantine ones like Basileus because that implies an order that just doesn't exist in the setting — history has also unfolded differently, religions are different, and the Greco-Roman complex and the Phoenician complex are on more equal and fragmented footing due to massive plague. Technology level is late medieval. So government at the federal level is more concerned with security than administration, and big empires are not in the cards.
The role was initially a military dictator from rural/marginal regions, which in the contemporary period has been modestly constrained to an elected position selected by oligarchs and aristocratic families, generally favouring descendants of the original dude. Habitually, the office holder is an army commander, but since they're at constant war with the thalassocracy, and aristocrats intermarry, that just means basically any patrician and some particularly decorated equites type with an army behind him is eligible.
I was looking through Indo-European roots and their descendants and found κοίρᾰνος, from PIE *koryonos, which had potential but I'm unsure how to interpret the IPA:
(5th BCE Attic) IPA(key): /kǒi̯.ra.nos/ (1st CE Egyptian) IPA(key): /ˈky.ra.nos/ (4th CE Koine) IPA(key): /**ˈcy**.ra.nos/ (10th CE Byzantine) IPA(key): /**ˈcy**.ra.nos/ (15th CE Constantinopolitan) IPA(key): /**ˈci**.ra.nos/
So the use of C here confuses me. I checked out the IPA for Ancient Greek and no usage of C is listed, but I did find reference that seeeeeems (no explanation given) to mean kappa gets switched to a lunate sigma in front of certain vowel sounds?
So would this be like 'Siranos' in later Greek, and 'Kuranos' in previous forms?
A different title is also an option. My second choice is the Phrygian vanaktei, but I wasn't sure how to Hellenize it convincingly--anax comes from the same root but is already Greek and so doesn't imply the foreignness. I'm also not sure how to make it feminine for the queen. :(
Edit:
Wow, you guys are fast! Appreciate it! :D
Would it be okay to ask for some more help with some names (toponyms and deities) for my book on this reddit?
I don't want to flood the place if that's not cool. If it is okay, should I make a single thread for it to tame the sprawl?

Dad reports mom's fiancé kisses his daughters on the lips, this and other actions made dad worry for his daughters' safety. Mom has threatened a restraining order against dad.
Here is my reply in the hopes that it helps to protect children from abuse, especially girls, and that it may help parents, especially fathers, to protect their precious children from abusers.
I'm not an attorney and this is not legal advice.
I would consider speaking with my children in private about the risks of sexual assault, and letting them know I am here for them and will believe them:
Talking to Your Kids About Sexual Assault
Start conversations about safety when your kids are young
Teach young children the language they need to talk about their bodies and information about boundaries to help them understand what is allowed and what is inappropriate. These lessons help them know when something isn’t right and give them the power to speak up.
https://www.rainn.org/articles/talking-your-kids-about-sexual-assault
Inappropriate touching if it is sexual may be child abuse. Protecting the abuser also may be child abuse.
Federal legislation provides guidance to States by identifying a minimum set of acts or behaviors that define child abuse and neglect. The Federal Child Abuse Prevention and Treatment Act (CAPTA) (42 U.S.C.A. § 5106g), as amended by the CAPTA Reauthorization Act of 2010, defines child abuse and neglect as, at minimum:
"Any recent act or failure to act on the part of a parent or caretaker which results in death, serious physical or emotional harm, sexual abuse or exploitation"; or "An act or failure to act which presents an imminent risk of serious harm." This definition of child abuse and neglect refers specifically to parents and other caregivers. A "child" under this definition generally means a person who is younger than age 18 or who is not an emancipated minor.

Recognizing Child Abuse and Neglect: Signs and Symptoms
The Parent:
Shows little concern for the child Denies the existence of—or blames the child for—the child’s problems in school or at home Asks teachers or other caregivers to use harsh physical discipline if the child misbehaves Sees the child as entirely bad, worthless, or burdensome Demands a level of physical or academic performance the child cannot achieve Looks primarily to the child for care, attention, and satisfaction of emotional needs

Child Abuse Laws State-by-State
All states have child abuse laws that are designed to help protect children at each stage in the timeline of abuse. For the first stage, states have implemented mandatory and permissive reporting laws -- with immunity (and in most states, anonymity) granted to reporters of known or suspected child abuse. Mandatory and permissive reporting laws help to raise awareness of child abuse and bring the authorities in early to intervene. The second stage of child abuse laws are definitional in nature.

Mom's threat to respond to dad's desire to protect his daughters by seeking a restraining order under false pretenses may be:
Possible perjury:
18 U.S. Code § 1621.Perjury generally
https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/1621
Possible:
18 U.S. Code § 242 - Deprivation of rights under color of law
https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/18/242
Mom's threats may be an attempt to extort dad and force him to ignore signs that his daughters may be in danger of abuse or may be being abused now.
Extortion
Forcing action or obtaining something by illegal means. Anyone may commit extortion through force or coercion. A public or private official may also commit extortion under the color of office.
https://www.law.cornell.edu/wex/extortion
It also may be domestic violence.
I would consider approaching the children's school with my concerns for their safety and welfare. While I am there, I may also request to review their records and determine if the school has already documented any concerns. I would let them know I am involved in my children's lives and want to protect them should they be in any danger.
FERPA codifies some rights of parents to access their children's records. In practice I think it's limited to parents with legal custody.
"Parents or eligible students have the right to inspect and review the student's education records maintained by the school. Schools are not required to provide copies of records unless, for reasons such as great distance, "

I wish you the best of luck in your search for justice.

Canadian Disability Benefits: Federal Government’s commitment to doing more

  • Following a nearly four-year commitment to the program, the fed finally disclosed the benefit’s details in its recent budget.
  • Disability Without Poverty reports that 41% of low-income Canadians are disabled.
  • Khera restated that the money allotted is merely a “first step” that will eventually be “meant to grow.”
Minister of Diversity, Inclusion, and Persons with Disabilities Kamal Khera is defending the recently announced Canada Disability Benefit on behalf of her government, referring to it as an “initial step” without providing a timeframe for its eventual extension.
Following a nearly four-year commitment to the program and promotion of it as a means of assisting people with disabilities in escaping poverty, the federal government finally disclosed the benefit’s details in its most recent budget last month.

Canada Disability Benefit

Disability groups, however, have widely criticized the budget for only allocating a maximum of $2,400 per year — $200 per month, or around $6.66 per day — to eligible applicants, claiming this is insufficient to fulfill their demands.
Disability Without Poverty reports that 41 percent of low-income Canadians are disabled, and 16 percent of disabled Canadians are impoverished. Everyone in the disability community agrees that there won’t be much of an impact from this initial investment to lift people out of poverty.
Concerns have also been raised by organizations regarding the budget’s eligibility requirement, which will only apply to less than half of individuals presently receiving disability income support.
Compared to other federal programs like the Guaranteed Income Supplement, which pays more than $1,000 per month, or the Canada Child payment, which pays $620 per month, the disability payment is rather meager. Khera restated that the money allotted is merely a “first step” that will eventually be “meant to grow.”
She referred to talks with the territories and provinces to make sure they don’t recoup gains within their borders. Although the federal government has promised to collaborate with the territories and provinces to obtain a cross-Canada agreement that would prevent the federal benefit from being counted as income to be eligible for other benefits, those guarantees have not yet been obtained.
Although Khera stated that the federal government is “committed” to expanding the Canada Disability Benefit, the minister refused to provide details on the nature of any increase or the Liberals’ timeline for implementation.

2024.05.12 04:35 CantaloupeLucky2801 The Importance of SBA's Small Business Size Standards

Small Businesses are the unsung heroes of our economy. To help these businesses navigate the market, the Small Business Administration (SBA) offers valuable resources, including the Small Business Size Standards Table. This table helps small businesses understand where they stand in the market landscape.
What Are Small Business Size Standards?
The Small Business Size Standards are guidelines that categorize businesses based on their size, considering factors like annual revenue and number of employees. These standards vary across industries to reflect the diverse nature of businesses. To download a free copy of the Table of Size Standards, visit the SBA site at: https://www.sba.gov/document/support-table-size-standards.
Notice that some NAICS codes have a dollar size standard and others have a number of employees standard. Here is some foreshadowing of things to come…SDB Growth will post some additional news articles to discuss how the SBA calculates annual receipts and number of employees so you will know where your company falls within the size standards. We know some companies that will do everything possible to remain a small business concern and they actually throttle their growth or make adjustments to stay under the limits. This strategy can keep their company as a big fish in a small pond instead of being the little fish in the big ocean of unrestricted competitions (not small business set-asides). Not only will it impact a company’s size standard but it could also lead to early graduation from an SDB program, such as the 8(a) program. The 8(a) program is a 9 year business development program, but a company can “size out” early based on exceeding the size standards.
Access to Opportunities
One significant benefit of the Size Standards Table is that it helps small businesses determine their eligibility for government programs, contracts, and assistance initiatives. Many of these opportunities are specifically reserved for small businesses, so knowing where they fit in the size spectrum is important.
Promoting Fair Competition
By categorizing businesses based on size, the Size Standards Table ensures fair competition within industries. It levels the playing field, giving smaller enterprises a fair chance when competing against larger companies for contracts and opportunities.
Getting the Right Support
Understanding their business size helps entrepreneurs access tailored support, such as loans and educational resources. This targeted assistance addresses the specific needs and challenges faced by small businesses, supporting their growth and sustainability.
Making Informed Decisions
Knowing where they stand in terms of size helps business owners make strategic decisions. Whether they're planning to expand, seeking financing, or entering new markets, this understanding provides valuable insights that align with their growth objectives.
Keeping Up with Change
The SBA regularly reviews and updates its Size Standards Table to ensure it remains relevant in a changing business landscape. This ongoing evaluation reflects shifts in market dynamics and economic trends, ensuring the standards accurately reflect business size.
Conclusion
In essence, the SBA's Size Standards Table empowers small businesses and strengthens the economy. It helps them access opportunities, promotes fair competition, provides tailored support, facilitates informed decision-making, and stays adaptable in a dynamic marketplace. Small businesses are vital to our economic health, and initiatives like the Size Standards Table highlight the commitment to their success.
SDB Growth has significant experience developing Small Disadvantaged Businesses and supporting business development. We can support your application to enter the SBA’s SDB program, help you win sole-source contracts, or even help you market to the Federal Government. We have supported the award of over 30 sole-source awards. Contact SDB Growth at https://sdbgrowth.com/ for more information.

Here is a quick happy snap from the Table of Size Standards in the 541xx NAICS series:
https://preview.redd.it/elkn6knzpwzc1.png?width=624&format=png&auto=webp&s=d5d0d6791c8c7c3db49ca448fdb0cc6e42666066

Published by Anthony Talcott

Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis on Friday signed another 20 bills into law that cover a variety of issues, including insurance, medical payments and sexual assault evidence.
The new laws signed on Friday include:

HB 215 — Risk Retention Groups

House Bill 215 lets motor vehicle coverage issued by a risk retention group (RRG) satisfy financial requirements under the state’s motor vehicle law.
RRGs are a type of liability insurance company owned by its members. They usually let businesses with similar insurance needs pool their risks under state and federal laws.
The law goes into effect on July 1.

HB 287 — Transportation

House Bill 287 addresses several issues related to transportation in the state, primarily as it relates to FDOT and the DHSMV.
For example, the law limits the amount of fuel tax revenues and motor vehicle license-related fees that can be spent on public transit projects.
Other changes include the following:
Requires the DHSMV to annually review major traffic law changes each year so that driving course content can be modified accordingly
Motor vehicles used for the performance of work on an FDOT road/bridge project must be registered in compliance with state standards
Amends provisions related to funding a fire station along the Alligator Alley toll road Amends provisions that a property owner’s right of first refusal for property that FDOT acquired but later determined is no longer needed for a transportation facility
The law goes into effect on July 1.

HB 437 — Anchoring Limitation Areas

House Bill 437 expands on parts of Biscayne Bay in Miami-Dade County, which are designated as anchoring limitation areas.
“Anchoring” refers to when boaters seek and use a safe harbor on a public waterway for an indefinite period using an anchor.
Previously, Florida law designated certain areas that are densely populated with narrow waterways as “anchoring limitation areas.” When in these areas, people are prohibited from anchoring between a half-hour after sunset and a half-hour before sunrise.
This law designates sections of Biscayne Bay between Palm Island and State Road A1A; and between San Marino Island and Di Lido Island as anchoring limitation areas.
The law goes into effect on July 1.

HB 935 — Home Health Care Services

House Bill 935 allows Medicaid to pay for home health services.
According to Legislative analysts, this will be allowed if ordered by advanced practice registered nurses or physician assistants.
The law goes into effect on July 1.

HB 1065 — Substance Abuse Treatment

House Bill 1065 amends requirements for substance abuse treatment policies.
For starters, the law prohibits a “recovery residence” — used in the treatment of substance abuse — from denying access solely on the basis that a person has been prescribed federally approved medication for the treatment of a substance abuse disorder.
In addition, the law increases the number of residents whom a recovery residence administrator may actively manage at a given time from 100 to 150.
The law also increases the timeframe for a certified recovery residence to find a new administrator if one is removed from 30 days to 90 days.
The law goes into effect on July 1.

HB 1083 — Permanency for Children

House Bill 1083 seeks to create a more efficient, less costly adoption process.
According to analysts, the law streamlines the adoption process for orphaned children so long as they already know the prospective guardian.
In addition, this law expands the criteria for Post-Secondary Education and Support (PESS), Aftercare, and Extended Guardianship and Adoption Assistance Programs, which aim to make it easier for those ages 18 - 23 to receive benefits as they transition out of foster care.
The law also expands eligibility for adoption incentives and increases the award amounts.
The law goes into effect on July 1.

HB 1335 — Department of Business and Professional Regulation

House Bill 1335 makes various changes regarding the DBPR and its policies.
Applicants and licensees will be required to create and maintain an online account to communicate with the DBPR if they’re part of the tobacco, nicotine, alcohol, CPA, or elevator industries.
Furthermore, the law removes certain requirements and provisions for practices like barbers, cosmetologists, pilots, specialty electrical contractors and asbestos abatement professionals.
The law goes into effect on July 1.

HB 1503 — Citizens Property Insurance

House Bill 1503 makes certain changes to Citizens Property Insurance, including:
Surplus Lines: Surplus line insurers meeting state standards may take out policies from Citizens issued on homes that aren’t primary residences or homesteaded properties.
Flood Coverage: Citizens policyholders who must purchase flood insurance for coverage eligibility are required to buy only dwelling coverage for a flood loss — rather than dwelling and contents coverage. This rule took effect upon the bill’s signing.
Combining Accounts: The law eliminates unnecessary statutory language now that Citizens has combined the Personal Lines Account, Commercial Lines Account and Coastal Account.
Operations and Management: Citizens’ executive director may appoint a designee to act as the agency head, and Citizens can share information with the NICB to help fight insurance fraud.
This law goes into effect on July 1.

HB 1561 — Office Liposuction Surgeries

House Bill 1561 involves more restrictions on physicians offering liposuction services out of their offices.
Currently, physicians are required to register their offices with the Department of Health if they’re performing liposuction procedures under certain conditions. Under this law, they will have to register regardless of whether the fat is temporarily or permanently removed.
Furthermore, fines are increased to $5,000 each time a physician performs such a procedure in an office that isn’t registered with the DOH. Previously, the fine was set at $5,000 per day, so the change will allow the DOH to go after physicians who violate the law several times within the same day.
The law went into effect upon being signed.

HB 1557 — Department of Environmental Protection

House Bill 1557 makes several changes involving the DEP, including:
Requires each water management district (WMD) to develop rules by the end of 2025 to promote the reuse of reclaimed water
Expands the types of projects undertaken by local governments that can be awarded funding by the Resilient Florida Grant Program. Requires the DEP to work on maintaining data on rising sea levels and statewide flood vulnerability
The law goes into effect on July 1.

HB 1611 — Insurance Changes

House Bill 1611 makes several changes to the state’s insurance rules, including:
Data Reporting: Property insurers must report information to the OIR on a monthly basis rather than a quarterly one. Data must be reported based on ZIP code instead of county.
Public Housing Authority: The maximum per-loss occurrence amount that a PHA self-insurance fund may retain is changed from $350,000 to an amount that the fund can withstand, so long as it meets sustainability criteria.
Cancellation Prohibition: Surplus lines insurers’ ability to cancel or non-renew personal and commercial lines residential insurance polices because of unrepaired damage after a hurricane or wind-loss following a declared emergency is restricted.
Hurricane Modeling: Insurers using the average of at least two models in their rate filing must use the same average model throughout the state. If using a weighted average instead, insurers must justify their decision with the OIR.
Citizens Property Insurance: This law eliminates a provision that lets Citizens charge up to 50% above the established rate for policyholders whose coverage was provided by an insurer who was determined to be “unsound.”
Roof Inspections: Roofing contractors are added to the list of authorized inspectors whom an insurer can approve to inspect a roof.
This law goes into effect on July 1.

HB 7089 — Transparency in Health and Human Services

House Bill 7089 sets standards for medical billing to increase price transparency.
First, the law requires hospitals to publish the costs of 300 or more “shoppable services” or provide an online resource that meets federal guidelines. In addition, hospitals will be required to set up an internal process for patient billing disputes.
“Hospitals and (Ambulatory Surgical Centers) must disclose when an insured patient’s cost-sharing amount exceeds a non-insured person’s cash price or pay a maximum fine of $500 per incident,” the Legislative analysis reads. “The bill requires hospitals and ASCs to provide each patient with an estimate and requires health plans to provide an advanced explanation of benefits on certain timelines.”
Alongside these rules, the law prohibits hospitals from filing an “extraordinary collection action” for medical debt, and a three-year statute of limitation period for medical debt collection will be implemented on the day that the hospital refers the debt to a third party.
The law also exempts up to $10,000 of a debtor’s property from garnishment or other legal actions by a hospital to recover medical debt.
The law goes into effect on July 1.

SB 168 — Congenital Cytomegalovirus Screenings

Senate Bill 168 amends state statutes regarding newborn health screening requirements.
Under this law, all newborns born under 35 weeks and requiring cardiac care in a hospital with neonatal intensive care services must be tested for Cytomegalovirus (CMV).
CMB is a common virus, though a healthy immune system typically keeps it from making people sick. However, some babies with a congenital CMV infection can have health problems that are apparent at birth and which can result in death.
The law also requires that CMV screening and medically necessary follow-up reevaluations that lead to a diagnosis are covered for Medicaid patients.
In addition, children diagnosed with CMV must be referred to a primary care physician and the Children’s Medical Services Early Intervention Program for management of the condition.
The law goes into effect on July 1.

SB 186 — Neurodegenerative Diseases

Senate Bill 186 requires the state’s Surgeon General to establish a policy committee for progressive supranuclear palsy and other neurodegenerative diseases.
The committee is aimed at identifying the impact of these diseases on Floridians while providing recommendations to improve awareness, detection and outcomes.
Members of the committee must be appointed by Sept. 1, and the initial meeting must be held by Oct. 1.
The law goes into effect on July 1.

SB 364 — Public Service Commission Rules

Senate Bill 364 amends state statutes regarding rulemaking by the Public Service Commission.
Under this law, rules about the Florida Public Service Regulatory Trust Fund and assessment fees charged to Florida utilities can be adopted by the PSC without being subject to potential ratification under state law.
The law went into effect upon being signed.

SB 366 — Gas Safety Law of 1967

Senate Bill 366 revises the maximum civil penalties for violating Florida’s Gas Safety Law of 1967.
Under SB 366, maximum penalties are increased from $25,000 to $266,015 for each violation for each day that a violation persists. This can reach over $2.6 million in total for any related series of violations.
The law goes into effect on July 1.

SB 532 — Securities

Senate Bill 532 amends the Securities and Investor Protection Act.
Many of the changes are aimed at improving investor protection through the Securities Guaranty Fund and providing more opportunities for investment within the state.
According to Legislative analysts, the changes were recommended by a Florida task force that was aimed at increasing the ability of small businesses in the state to raise capital.
There were also several small changes regarding business financing provisions that were made to be consistent with recent federal rules.
The law goes into effect on Oct. 1.

SB 764 — Retention of Sexual Offense Evidence

Senate Bill 764 amends state statutes to specify the standards for storing sexual assault evidence kits (SAKs).
SAKs must be retained for a minimum of 50 years if they are collected from alleged victims who:
do not report the sexual offense to law enforcement during the forensic physical exam
do not ask to have the evidence tested
In addition, the medical facility or certified rape crisis center that collected the SAK must transfer the kit to the FDLE within 30 days of collection.
The FDLE must then store the evidence anonymously with a documented chain of custody.
The law goes into effect on July 1.

SB 998 — Liquefied Petroleum Gas

Senate Bill 998 makes several changes regarding liquefied petroleum (LP) gas.
Many of these changes are regulatory and aimed at ensuring proper handling and storage of LP.
The law goes into effect on July 1.

SB 1380 — Disability Transportation Services

Senate Bill 1380 involves special transportation services geared for those with disabilities.
The law revises the duties of FDOT regarding requirements in its grants and agreements with firms that provide paratransit services.
For example, the law requires that such providers:
offer both pre-booking and on-demand service to paratransit service users
establish reasonable time periods between a trip request and arrival, best practices for limiting travel times, and transparency about service quality
offer specific technology-based ride booking and vehicle tracking services in accessible formats
provide training to each paratransit driver for the professional development of staff providing direct services
The law goes into effect on July 1.

2024.05.12 00:10 Luk3ling Universal Basic Income: A Foundational Step Towards Economic Justice, Empowerment and a better future for not only our nation, but all of Humanity!

Universal Basic Income is more than a policy; it's a pivotal shift towards securing a dignified, stable baseline for every individual in society. Empirical evidence from UBI trials globally highlights its profound impact: significantly improving well-being, reducing poverty, and catalyzing entrepreneurial activity. Such evidence robustly supports UBI not only as beneficial but as crucial for societal advancement.
UBI's financial viability is frequently debated, yet an honest evaluation of our fiscal priorities reveals that the resources for a comprehensive UBI program are indeed accessible. By ensuring that the wealthiest, who benefit disproportionately from our societal structure, contribute equitably, we can fund a substantial UBI program. Furthermore, by redirecting even a modest portion of our disproportionately high military expenditures towards Universal Basic Income, we not only realign our national budget to reflect the core values of peace and prosperity, but also send a decisive message to the international community.
This shift would signify a pivotal transformation from an era marked by colonialism, expansionism, and imperialism—an age where global interactions were often dominated by conflict, domination and profit at the expense of others—to a new era prioritizing cooperation, mutual respect, and shared prosperity. By consciously choosing to invest in our own people through UBI rather than in the mechanisms of war, as one of if not the premiere world power, we would signal that it is time to collectively usher in a more peaceful and cooperative future. This represents a fundamental change in how we perceive and interact with the world, advocating for a global community where collaboration prevails over confrontation.
Proposing a UBI of $12,000 annually for every American citizen is not merely feasible; it's a strategy that could transform lives. Such a UBI would virtually eliminate homelessness in many areas, immensely boost both local and national economies, and enhance the lives of hundreds of millions of American citizens! It would empower individuals to pursue higher education and entrepreneurial ventures without the paralyzing fear of not meeting basic needs.
Moreover, UBI serves as a powerful preventative measure. By guaranteeing financial resources for all, we can forestall many of the social problems exacerbated by poverty and economic insecurity. The expense of implementing UBI is dwarfed by the costs involved in managing the effects of poverty, such as healthcare expenditures, increased crime rates, and diminished economic productivity.
In conclusion, Universal Basic Income is not merely a fiscal program—it's a commitment to a new social contract that promises a more equitable, peaceful, and prosperous future. It signifies a society that values human well-being as the cornerstone of its economic policies, ensuring that no economic barrier can hinder anyone's potential. Through strategic tax reforms and reallocation of government spending, funding a transformative UBI is not just possible but imperative for a humane and thriving economy.
By adopting Universal Basic Income and reducing our military expenditures, not only do we chart a course towards a more equitable and peaceful future, but we also position ourselves at the forefront of a global revolution in how governments prioritize human well-being. Imagine the unmatched levels of patriotism and exceptionalism we'd unleash as the first major world power to deliver such an earth-shattering strike against the century-old status quo. This bold move would not only redefine national pride but also set a precedent for transformative change on a global scale.
These decisions would not only chart a course towards a more equitable and peaceful future, but also position our nation at the forefront of a global revolution in how governments prioritize human well-being. Imagine the unmatched levels of patriotism and exceptionalism we'd unleash as the first major world power to deliver such an earth-shattering strike against the century-old status quo.
This bold move would not only redefine national pride but also set a precedent for transformative change on a global scale. For the first time ever: American exceptionalism would no longer be a trait that anyone from around the world regard with skepticism. It would be regarded as a self evident truth. An inarguable fact. The world in its entirety, stuck by a reckoning as if shocked from slumber: That the city on the hill shines once more.

For the first time ever, American exceptionalism would no longer be a trait regarded with skepticism by anyone around the world; it would become a self-evident truth, an inarguable fact.
The enitre world, struck by a reckoning as if shocked from slumber:
That city on the hill. It shines once more.

2024.05.11 21:07 Sugarfoot1994 Do I have a discrimination case here?

Hello everyone,
After conducting a great deal of research, I still do not have a definitive answer, and don't know where to turn
I would like to move from my current residence in Ontario (my family home) to British Columbia. However, I have encountered a seemingly insurmountable obstacle: I must live in BC for a period of three months in order to qualify for citizenship. Citizenship is a requirement for an assessment to determine my eligibility for assisted living, which I would require by virtue of a permanent physical disability (Spastic Diplegic Cerebral Palsy) that necessitates the use of an electric wheelchair and more in my daily life.
General Eligibility Criteria
A. To be eligible for subsidized home and community care services, you must:
Be a Canadian citizen (or have permanent resident status or have been issued a temporary resident permit by the federal minister for immigration);
Be a resident of British Columbia for at least three months; and
Be 19 years of age or older.
B. To be eligible for services, you must also be unable to function independently because of chronic, health-related problems or have health care conditions that require care due to one or more of the following:
You have recently been discharged from an acute care hospital.
You require care to prevent or reduce the need for hospital or emergency department services or admission to a long-term care home.
You have a life-limiting illness.
According to the official website of the Government of British Columbia, assisted living is defined as follows:
Assisted living services provide housing, hospitality services and regulated assisted living services for adults who can live independently and make decisions on their own behalf but require a supportive environment due to physical and functional health challenges.
Assisted living services include:
a private housing unit with a lockable door;
regulated assisted living services (may include assistance with tasks like bathing, grooming, dressing and mobility or tasks delegated by a health care professional);
two nutritious meals per day, one of which is the main meal;
access to basic activity programming such as games, music and crafts;
weekly housekeeping;
laundering of towels and linen;
access to laundry equipment for personal laundry;
heating or cooling as necessary to maintain the safety and basic comfort level of the residence; and
a 24-hour emergency response system.
Herein lies the problem. Specifically, any person attempting to move to British Columbia who requires the services of assisted living (bathing, grooming, dressing, mobility, etc.) cannot possibly meet the eligibility criteria in order to receive these services.
To elaborate, persons who require assistance with tasks of daily living, those ‘unable to live independently’ are required to ‘be a resident of British Columbia for at least three months’ ~before~ they are assessed and their need for services is determined.
This equates to living for three months ~without~ bathing, grooming, dressing, etc.
Conversely, a person who is capable of meeting the established criteria, by definition, does ~not~ require the services that assisted living provides.
All this to ask, is there a discrimination case here?

2024.05.11 11:22 mcm8279 [Discovery 5x7 Reviews] GIZMODO: "The Breen come calling in "Erigah," giving Discovery some of its greatest diplomacy. The main plot delivers a strong, tense game of politicking and aggressive negotiation over spectacle in a very satisfying manner. It’s just captivatingly tense and triumphant"

GIZMODO: "We’re getting close to the end of Star Trek: Discovery, which means we’re getting close to a season finale. And if there’s one thing Star Trek: Discovery loves—more than love, more than time travel, more than being deeply unsubtle—it is presenting you with a scenario of hope that then has to come crashing down, because you remember this is happening in episode seven of a season and not episode 10.
Usually, this has been a problem for Discovery in the past—because our heroes can’t help but feel like they have to be compromised out of nowhere or blindsided in some silly manner as the stakes of a grand finale to the season come crashing down around them. Any good they do, whether it’s sitting down and talking with their foes, or making a breakthrough on a mystery, has to be upended, because structurally they were doing too well too soon. And while “Erigah,” the seventh episode of Discovery’s fifth and final season, does have that problem in some ways, it’s not actually all that impactful on the main plot of the episode—which delivers a strong, tense game of politicking and aggressive negotiation over spectacle in a very satisfying manner.
[...]
Remarkably, it turns out the Federation and the Breen haven’t directly interacted since the latter entered the Dominion War, about 800 years prior—and when that happened, the Breen became the first species in hundreds of years to directly assault Earth, leveling San Francisco in the process. That this is the next time they’re meeting—for a volatile hostage exchange and attempt to try and talk the Breen down from just blasting their way into getting what they want—just dials up the pressure on everyone here (that being mostly Michael and Rayner, Admiral Vance, and T’Rina, who steps up to act as the Federation’s representative while President Rillak stays way the hell away on a different diplomatic mission, which is an incredibly funny way for them to frame the fact that Chelah Horsdal didn’t come back for a few scenes). And it’s a good pressure, that gets people to crack in very interesting ways.
The first is Rayner, who, even for as gruff as he’s been trying to balance his personal axes to grind over the hunt for Moll and L’ak with integrating into Discovery’s command structure, gets decidedly fiery in a sit-down meeting with Vance and T’Rina. It’s clear to us and Michael alike that there’s something more to his biting commentary here than his usual irascibility, as Michael learns sitting him down afterwards to try and get him to cool: another Breen Primarch was responsible for invading Kelleran and subjugating Rayner’s people, leaving him the sole survivor of his family. To him, the fear the Breen represent isn’t some long-ago dustup in Federation history like it is for T’Rina and Vance, it’s his life. But having lived in the face of Breen aggression, it’s Rayner that gets our heroes to realize that they have to play hardball with Ruhn in order to make it out of this in one piece—they can’t back down in the face of his warship towering over Federation HQ, they can’t capitulate, they can’t show their fear: Starfleet has to come prepared to play, and throw down if necessary.
What follows is a genuinely fantastic scene—perhaps one of the best in Discovery.
Making full use of the circular Federation HQ set, Ruhn and a cadre of Breen soldiers beam in to meet T’Rina, Vance, Rayner, and Michael—and T’Rina of all people goes on the attack. She matches Ruhn word for word, never backing down, never hiding behind the cool facade of Vulcan logic. T’Rina knows what she has to do to buy Culber as much time to keep L’ak alive, and using the info on the rival Primarch that Rayner revealed discussing Kelleran’s history, the Federation makes its demands, rather than it being the other way around: they keep L’ak in custody and off the board from the Breen’s ongoing power vacuum for the Imperial throne, the Breen back the hell off, and no one has to blow a hole in the side of anyone else’s starship today.
This shouldn’t work. It’s a Vulcan, not exactly known for their fiery demeanors, going up against a Breen, who are all rage and bluster but also locked behind a big old mask. But Discovery sells the hell out of it, even if it has to just be a bluff on T’Rina’s part, and it’s just captivatingly tense and triumphant—and rooted in these characters having to step up and take on what they’ve learned about the people they’re confronting and carry the day with words rather than phaser bolts. It’s great! It’s so great.
[...]
they have to let Moll go with the Breen, whisking them away to find the last piece of the Progenitor puzzle.
So yes, the finale stakes are here, but at least this time around they relied on a rash decision by our antagonists, rather than our heroes, to come crashing in here. And in Moll and L’ak’s decision, that rashness works: they were desperate to do anything, even die, because the thought of being puppeted in the Breen’s power plays and politics was worse than anything else. The plan was stupid—very stupid, even—but it was driven by their desperation and their love for each other. It’s much better than having our heroes’ hard work undone in a blink just because they needed to not quite succeed yet in the structure of the season.
Alas, that does bring us to the bit of “Erigah” where that has to happen—the B-plot about the next clue in the puzzle, which basically involves Tilly and Adira walking around the ship and having to pretend that the very basic discoveries they make about the Betazoid doctor’s clue they found are astonishingly revelatory. [...]
All this is very simple puzzle work but it is drawn out across the background of the entire episode, and it not only distracts from the thrilling tension of the main plot, it’s the bit where our heroes are forced to look stupid because each of these simple steps is treated like they’ve just made a Holmesian breakthrough that no one could’ve possibly ever thought of. They did the Star Trek equivalent of googling for 45 minutes! Thankfully, it’s all just a means to an end compared to the part of “Erigah” that really works—and the stage is set for a high-stakes finale to Discovery as the Breen and the Federation alike race towards the final piece of the puzzle. Hopefully, as things inevitably go from bad to worse the closer we get to the last episode, we’ll chart that rocky path in a manner a bit more akin to the A-plot we got this week, rather than the B-plot."

2024.05.11 05:12 gecko927 My rant about Scott Galloway's TED talk about how the US is destroying young people's future

DISCLAIMER: I'd like to note that I do not consider myself an expert on many of the topics he talks about or even economics in general but a lot of what I'm about to say is pretty easily verifiable and basic, and I'll try to be clear that I'm expressing my opinion and not fact when I'm doing so. Given my lack of expertise, none of what I say here should be considered as the final authority on these topics, it's a reddit post for fucks sake, I encourage everyone to search up the relevant data and information on the topics they are interested in or claims they find dubious. It's really not that hard and all the links and data I'm gonna cite here took me less than five minutes to find for each piece of information. If you're not familiar with where to find this data it might take you longer but I promise that anyone with access to the internet can do the same thing I'm doing. Finally, for those looking for some opinionless, academic argument, that's not what this is, this is gonna sound like a rant because it is, I'm posting this for nothing more than my own satisfaction, take from it what you will.
Ok I'm writing this after I finished the whole thing and I said that I'd try to be clear that I'm expressing my opinion and not fact when I'm doing so and the basically entire second half of this is my opinion and I don't make that very clear so sorry about that.
Honestly I'd love to be wrong because I really do think that younger people are at a disadvantage compared to previous generations at the same age but the arguments he makes and the data he uses throughout his talk just sound like such bullshit to me.

Scott Galloway recently did a Ted talk titled "How the US is destroying young people's future", as well as an accompanying blog post. He's made some fair points about how young people have been put at an inherent disadvantage and that they have it harder than previous generations. That's most likely true and I personally support that point of view, but the a lot data and numbers he makes this argument with seem to be cherry picked, misleading, or just straight up wrong. So let's break his talk down. u/JustTaxLandLol made a pretty good post about him comparing median wages to the S&P500 (https://www.reddit.com/badeconomics/comments/1cc3rs8/scott\_galloway\_compares\_median\_wage\_to\_sp500/) but I think that Galloway's mistakes are much more comprehensive than just that particular slide.
The first slide with data makes a claim about how pre-tax income, adjusted for inflation, has decreased across generations from grandparents to parents to kids, and that cost of public colleges and home prices have increased significantly across generations too. First of all, categorising generations by whether they have children or grandchildren is kinda nuts. That's a very wide, overlapping, range of ages. If he has actually fixed age ranges for each generation that don't overlap and just made these categorisations for the sake of understandability to a nonacademic audience, I still think that's the wrong choice but fine. However, his claim that real income has decreased across generations is weak at best. This working paper (https://www.federalreserve.gov/econres/feds/files/2024007pap.pdf) from the Fed Reserve was published February 2024, and from the figures that start at page 35, shows that by almost every categorisation they could think of, GenZ earns more at the same age than every previous generation before them. There's some conflict here with Raj Chetty's work but I don't have the time or knowledge to reconcile the two perspectives but at best, the pre-tax income numbers Galloway presents are questionable at best. Furthermore, he doesn't provide anyone a chance at even checking the sources he gets this information from. Not once in his entire talk does he cite a single source. He couldn't even have some tiny text at the bottom of his tables or diagrams saying what organisation he got this data from. Ok so that crossed out bit is wrong, he does have sources they're just very very faint and you can see them if you squint hard enough at the bottom left corner of his graphs. But the source he gives for this slide is a joke. Here's the link https://www.profgalloway.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/04/Table-01.png
His "source" is his own analysis. Ok so by his analysis, the average cost of public college is 56000*0.43 = 24080. I'm gonna use numbers from this US News page (https://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/paying-for-college/articles/paying-for-college-infographic), which might not be the most reliable source in the world, but it's probably somewhere in the ballpark. So according to US News, average tuition for the 2023-2024 school year for out of state students going to a public school is 23,630 and 10,662 for in state students. If these numbers are anywhere near accurate, the only conclusion I can draw is that Galloway has cherry-picked his data by only including the cost for out of state students in his analysis. First of all, public schools in the US are there to provide affordable access to higher education FOR RESIDENTS OF ITS STATE. Using only out of state numbers is absolutely ridiculous. Secondly, even if he used only the in state numbers, 10662/56000 is approximately equal to 19%. So if I use his very very questionable pre-tax income numbers, cost of public college for in state students has still increased across his categorisation of generations. It's not like his point would have been invalidated if he had used the in-state numbers, a trend of tuition increasing as a percentage of real income across multiple generations is still very bad. This is my opinion but I guess that he just wanted to find a nice shocking number. I didn't catch this but in their post, u/JustTaxLandLol notes that later on Galloway says "real median income from labor is up 40% since 1974" so he's also contradicting himself in the same talk.
I couldn't be bothered to look into the house price to income column he has so I don't have any comments on that.
His next slide is a point about how the percentage of 30 year olds earning more than their parents did at 30 has been decreasing very significantly over time. This is from a paper in 2016 by Raj Chetty (link: https://www.science.org/doi/10.1126/science.aal4617). I've seen some counterarguments about the methods used in the paper but there are counterarguments for basically every inequality paper in existence so I'd take them with a grain of salt. Those points are more complex than the scope of this post and I lack the expertise to be making them anyways so I believe this slide. I'll admit that Galloway makes a good argument for this slide.
Right after this slide he says "As a result, people over the age of 55 feel pretty good about America, but less than one in five people under the age of 34 feel very good about America. This creates an incendiary, righteous movement...". He supports this with data on the percentage of US adults who feel "extremely proud" to be American.
Before I talk about the data on this slide, I'd like to be a little anal about things and pick apart his wording and causal claims he makes. When Galloway says "as a result" he's making a causal claim about the relationship between a young person's earning ability and their national pride. Leaving aside the econometric issues of making random causal claims, this is a ridiculous marginalisation of all the other critically important issues in the US. It seems pretty clear to me that reduced national pride amongst younger individuals is a combination of a lack of social mobility (or however you want to word your version of the fading American dream), the continued existence of systematic racism and sexism, US response to ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Gaza, bodily autonomy (abortion), and many other issues. Not to say that the economic disadvantages of young people doesn't play a role in causing this lack of national pride but come on. He also says "this creates an incendiary righteous movement...". Ok if the "as a result" from the last sentence could be interpreted as the economic disadvantages of young people play some part in their dissatisfaction with the government, it should be obvious to anyone not living under a rock that many of the political conflicts and movements that have erupted in the US over the past few years have little, if anything, to do with earning ability. In the slide after the poll data he shows three photos, one of a MeToo protest, one of a BLM protest, and another of a pro-Palestine protest. I can only interpret this as him making the claim that the younger generations economic difficulties are causally linked to those movements, which is totally bananas.
Now lets talk about the data. He got this from the Gallup polls (link: https://news.gallup.com/poll/394202/record-low-extremely-proud-american.aspx, there's a link to download the pdf with the poll numbers at the end of this article). There are 5 options for the Gallup poll: "Extremely proud"; "Very proud"; "Moderately proud"; "Only a little proud"; or "Not at all proud". So Galloway is cherry-picking again. To be fair, it's true that even including the rest of the answers, a quick glance at the data suggests (very strongly) that young people are less proud than older people. There are also more young people who choose "Not at all proud" (11% for 18-34 and 1% for 55+). Though there is probably some argument to be made about whether "extreme" pride is a good thing. Furthermore, "pretty good" and "very good" do not reflect the extremity of choosing, well, the most extreme option.
As an introduction to his next slide he says that "a decent proxy for how much we value youth labor is minimum wage". I've never heard of this before and am very very skeptical but I'm willing to attribute this to my own ignorance so I'll leave that sentence alone. So on this slide there's a graph with two lines, one is minimum wage across time adjusted for inflation, the other is whats supposed to be minimum wage if adjusted for productivity (also adjusted to inflation I assume). Galloway got this data form the Economic Policy Institute (EPI) (https://www.epi.org/productivity-pay-gap/), which shows that this gap between productivity began around 1979. This was when Carter was president and right before the Reagan administration. Those who know about the economic history of this time probably won't be surprised since a lot of the policies of this time were rather inegalitarian and heavily favoured the wealthy. I agree that many of the policies of the time contributed heavily to the inequality America faces today and though I haven't read any studies about how this affects minimum wage workers, I believe that minimum wage workers or low income workers in general today have significantly lower purchasing power relative to a few decades ago.
What I have a problem with here is the idea that productivity and minimum wage should increase in tandem. According to the EPI, "Productivity measures how much total economywide income is generated (i.e., for workers, business owners, landlords, and everybody else together) in an average hour of work" and "pay is defined as the average compensation (wages and benefits) of production and nonsupervisory workers. The pay for this group is one appropriate benchmark for 'typical worker pay' because production and nonsupervisory workers have made up roughly 80% of the U.S. workforce over the entire period shown in the figure and because the data for production and nonsupervisory workers exclude extremely highly paid managerial workers like CEOs and other corporate executives". Before I try to break down my complaints with the measures used, my immediate reaction when I saw this was that it seems rather stupid to compare the relationship between average productivity and minimum wage in an industrial economy against the same relationship in a service oriented one. There are just more jobs now that let you make an impact on the economy far beyond what you are paid and it is so so difficult to quantify this change. Using a similar argument, I really have no clue how macro people make models or do estimates for things like productivity but I'm quite skeptical about the reliability of using such a measure of productivity because of the increased prevalence of second, third, or n-th order effects that would be present in a measure of something like total gdp but pretty much impossible to identify for any employer. For those who want to read more about this difference between productivity and compensation I think this is the most relevant paper from EPI (https://files.epi.org/2015/understanding-productivity-pay-divergence-final.pdf). There are some points I'm not satisfied with in this paper like them attributing the entirety of the difference between median hourly compensation to average consumer hourly compensation but that would take more time than I want to spend on this.
Now we're still on the same slide. Galloway says "we've kept it [minimum wage] purposely pretty low" twice in three sentences. Now he's suggesting that there's some collective out there that has the political power and desire to keep minimum wage low. By "we" I think he means to suggest that the old-timers have banded together to screw the young people over. Ok buddy. I'm stepping outside the bounds of what's considered strictly economics here a little but pinning the injustices of society on some ethereal enemy whose existence can never be disproven is the same as taking "advantage of the flaws in our species with medieval institutions, Paleolithic instincts, and godlike technology" (Galloway's words, same TED talk) to me. Maybe there really is some cabal of scheming geezers out there who have some twisted desire to keep the minimum wage low, but I'm more inclined to believe that a lot of these "injustices" are a result of our existing political and societal institutions being poor and inefficient aggregators of our desires as a society, rewarding selfishness instead of cooperation. This certainly makes the problem harder to solve than if there were just some evil 'others' we could get rid of and be done with. Having a target to direct our outrage at, believing that I am good and they are bad, is easier than facing the reality that everyone is born with the selfishness that creates the injustices we live with but that's not gonna make people more agreeable. As an economist, I study the theory of incentives to use the same human selfishness that creates all the problems Galloway talks about to create solutions that hopefully improve our quality of life. This is what I believe is the beauty of being human, all the good and bad that happens stem from the same desires, it is our job to create institutions and systems that allow us to channel our desires in a way that benefits everyone, but I digress. The point is, this enemy that Galloway creates is an effective tactic at convincing people of his argument, but I don't believe such a perspective benefits society at all. Mistakes should be corrected, that doesn't mean they're always the result of ill intentions.
His next slide compares the difference between percentage increase in median household income against percentage increase in median home price, as well as a comparison of the median monthly mortgage between 2019 and 2024. I have nothing to say about the graph, I agree that over time, home prices have increased to an unacceptable level. The Fed funds rate went from 2.4 percent in Feb 2019 to 5.33 percent in Feb 2024 (https://fred.stlouisfed.org/series/fedfunds). To his credit, Galloway does attribute this increase in mortgage payments to "an acceleration in interest rates" but what's the alternative? Don't increase interest rates? Then if I was Galloway I'd make the same TED talk and talk about how the continued low interest rates contributed to rampant inflation that made all the poor people even poorer. It seems like he's decided to take whatever bad economic event that seems somewhat relevant and made it to be the result of some group's dogged determination to keep the younger generation down. Why is the increase from pre- to post-covid prices on anything surprising. I'd like to meet the genius who saw covid coming and intentionally created this increase in home prices.
He also says "the most expensive homes in the world, based on this metric, are number three, Vancouver. Why? Because 60 percent of the cost of building a home goes to permits...". I have no idea what point he's making here. Based on what metric, median home price? Monthly mortgage payments? Why do I care about Vancouver, a Canadian city, being number three? Then he talks about how "the incumbents that own assets have weaponized government". Either he's switched to talking about oligopolistic lobbyists in general without saying so or he's still talking about Canada. I dunno. Someone please explain. Then he says "this is the transfer I'm going to be speaking about". Also, everything he just said is talking about how there exists a group of people trying to PREVENT transfers of wealth to new entrants. And there was huge applause after that sentence. Nutsos, all of them.
Ok next slide. Galloway presents two pie charts, comparing the share of household wealth by age in 1989 to 2023. So he's talking directly about inequality in wealth now. Inequality in the US is really really bad, that's a fact. I'm a big fan of the work of Emmanuel Saez, Gabriel Zucman, and Thomas Piketty. These people have been at the forefront of research on inequality for many years now and though their work is not flawless, I'm convinced by the data they present and the methods by which they have aggregated the data and what they show is that inequality is worse than even what the pie charts Galloway presents suggest. However, this is not to say that Galloway makes a valid argument. Please note the grey bits in the pie chart. If Galloway has shown the numbers for everyone under 40 and above 70, the group that's excluded are those between 40 and 70. So those in the age range of 40-70 owned 100 - 19 - 12 = 69% of household wealth in 1989 and 100 - 30 - 7 = 63% in 2023. I could probably go and find how the age demographics of the population have changed over time and I think that with declining birth rates, the percentage change in age demographics would be pretty close to the percentage change in household wealth but I'm tired of beating every slide to death so I'll leave that to someone else if anyone's motivated enough to do that (if my hypothesis is wrong here just comment and I'll make that change). My first thought when I saw this though was again, this guy has paid no regard to structural change in society. Given the increased accessibility of buying stocks over the past three decades is it really that surprising that older people who have had more time and cash at the start of the digital age to invest in companies that are now massive mega-corporations have experienced a higher return on their capital. This is not to say that none of this change in the share of wealth held by those under 40 is due to some inherent unfairness in our society and I have neither the time nor knowledge to separate these effects out but to say that this was a "purposeful" effort to cut their wealth in half is complete and utter bullshit. Also, this guy makes another causal claim WITH NOTHING BUT A CHANGE IN SHARE OF HOUSEHOLD WEALTH. Congratulations everyone Scott Galloway has just made every econometrician in the world redundant, I always knew my professors were just trying to confuse me with funny symbols and Greek letters, someone get this guy a Nobel Prize.
Then while introducing his next slide Galloway says that his analyst's presence in the audience "brings the average age of the entire conference down in 11 days". So he's saying that TED knows exactly who's showing up to their event before it happens and that they have the exact birthdates of everyone in the audience too and that they've given this information to one of their speakers. A friend of mine has told me he's just making a joke and that I should let this point go because I'm being too anal about things but yeah I become anal about things when someone suggests sweeping institutional changes in a talk viewed by millions of people so thought I'd include it anyways just as another example of the bullshit this guy has been spewing.
When he moves on to the actual content in the slide the first point he makes is about lower acceptance rates in schools. So I don't have data on this because I couldn't be bothered to go find any so again, I'll change my statement if anyone has reliable data indicating otherwise but I think its pretty safe to say that way less people used to apply than before and combined with an increase in international student applications and enrollments the competition is just way higher than before. The most obvious explanation would be that higher education institutions have made the mistake of not increasing enrollments at a rate quick enough to meet demand. However, according to US News (https://www.usnews.com/education/best-colleges/articles/how-many-universities-are-in-the-us-and-why-that-number-is-changing) there were 3982 degree-granting postsecondary institutions in the US. and UCLA is ranked 15th in national universities. So why is it surprising now that university education is becoming more popular that higher ranked universities are harder to get into. So instead of expanding enrollment I think that a well thought out plan of affirmative action would be a much better option of giving "unremarkable kids and giving them a shot at being remarkable" (what this well thought out plan may be I don't know, I honestly didn't even search up any statistics about affirmative action this was just the first solution I thought of that didn't involve ignoring the crowning achievement of statistics). To his credit, Galloway does include a point about income-based affirmative action at the end of his talk, though he overwhelmingly emphasises increasing enrollment in schools. I don't have any data about that but I think that class sizes at public universities are large enough as it is.
The rest of the slide gives numbers on college debt of house price compared to first year income. College debt is ridiculously high and many people struggle because of it. I don't have the solution and neither does Galloway because he doesn't really mention it. I think that house price-to-first year income is a poor comparison because it doesn't take into account average rate of income increase and no normal person from any generation is looking to buy a house with first year income but there's probably a more appropriate metric out there that shows a similar change anyways so I'm ok with that.
Then he talks about him and his "colleagues" who "artificially constrain supply to create aspiration and scarcity". I would like to meet the professors who have control over enrollment rates because none of mine did. Then he says "to my colleagues in higher ed: we're public servants, not fucking Chanel bags". The marketing professor from NYU says he's a public servant...ok.
The slide after that compares Harvard's increase in endowment compared to their increase in enrollment and he calls them a "hedge fund offering classes". I see no issue with this point, he made a great argument, can't really criticise anything here.
Don't worry though he makes up for it by immediately making one of the most egregious statements in this whole talk. We're looking at his next slide, the one titled "Grand Bargain" now. He says that the government should take some of the money that's supposed to be used to forgive existing loans to about 500 of the top public universities to reduce tuition by 2% and year, expand enrollments by 6% a year, and increase vocational programs to 20% of the degrees granted. Then the slide after that, claims this will double freshman seats and cut costs in half in just 10 years. Ok so he thinks that most of the money "earmarked to bail out the one third of people that got to go to college on the backs of the two thirds that didn't" should go to future students instead because, I assume from the tone of his words, he doesn't think they need or deserve all that loan forgiveness. So why bring up the increase in college debt previously (the slide I talked about three paragraphs ago)? Anyways that's not the crazy thing. Let's see what happens if you reduce tuition by 2% a year for 10 years. So the calculation goes like this 0.98^{10} is approximately equal to 0.81. So with the number he puts up, tuition decreases by 19% in ten years. If everything before this slide could be attributed to cherry-picking, stupidity, or lack of good data, then fine he's just ignorant even though he shouldn't have been if he went up there to make that talk. But now this is just a FUCKING BAREFACED LIE. I cannot think of a greater insult to the audience's intelligence than the fact that this guy didn't think anyone would pull out a fucking calculator and do the calculation themselves. I won't blame the audience for not saying anything because I'm not sure I would have wanted to do that either but at least from youtube and reddit comments there are a decent number of people who didn't realise this. A similar calculation shows that expanding enrollment by 6% per year increases seats by about 80% total (1.06^{10}). Not sure how that translates in terms of freshman seats but at least this is closer than the tuition claim.
Then his next slide compares wages to the s&p500. This is the point of u/JustTaxLandLol's post and I think his post and the discussion in the comments covers most if not all of my thoughts so you can just read that. https://www.reddit.com/badeconomics/comments/1cc3rs8/scott_galloway_compares_median_wage_to_sp500/
Ok next slide, "The Transfer: Purposeful". Oh yay he's about to make another causal claim with nothing but a graph on the change in top marginal tax rates for corporations and individuals. And if we skip ahead to the next slide we'll realise that this claim is that the gradual decrease in top marginal tax rates for corporations and individuals results in lowered senior poverty and child poverty either remains constant or increases. Yes everybody the newest advancement in economic research has just been released. Lowering top tax rates decreases senior poverty and increases child poverty. And Scott Galloway made that argument in 24 seconds (transcript on TED website has time markers).
Man I really set out with the intention to keep the tone of this post as neutral as I could but I'm just writing out my internal dialogue with less swearing now. I apologise to those who would have preferred a more careful and less emotional knee-jerk response of an analysis but this is a reddit post, its not like there are standards.
Now he moves on to talking about social security. Galloway says "it would cost 11 billion dollars to expand the child tax credit. But that gets stripped out of the infrastructure bill". So zero explanation about why it would cost 11 billion dollars to expand the child tax credit, why not more or less, no comment about how many children it would affect, how much money it would mean for each child or family, just some number that you have to accept. Most of the time there's no why to the amount of funding that the government allocates to policies but at least there's some breakdown to how its going to be used, Galloway doesn't even have that. This is before we even consider the fact that child tax credit was expanded this year (https://www.cbsnews.com/news/child-tax-credit-2024-who-qualifies/). Maybe he's talking about some other issue that I'm not aware of but I don't think so. He says he got the social security spending data from the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities, which is a think tank. I don't want to sort through their website to fact check so I'll accept it as the truth but as far as I know the actual social security administration releases their facts and figures for the year August of next year so I'm not sure why he didn't just use the 2022 numbers from a more reliable source.
His next few couple slides are about the increasing age of politicians. I think this is a great point but he probably should have used a better example of a younger politician than Justin Trudeau.
Then at around the 10 minute mark, using his slide titled "Generational Theft", Galloway claims that "we pumped the economy" during covid so that the Nasdaq would gain value, causing "intergenerational theft". I don't know if he thinks it was intentional or not but how is he going to completely ignore the fact that the stimulus checks were primarily for households that were struggling due to the greatest unemployment rate we have seen in our lifetime (https://www.pewresearch.org/short-reads/2020/06/11/unemployment-rose-higher-in-three-months-of-covid-19-than-it-did-in-two-years-of-the-great-recession/). I'm really kind of tired of this so I'll let those at the CBR make my argument for me. "Within the first 10 days, households spent an average of 29 cents from every dollar received. The bulk of this spending was on food, rent, and bills" (https://www.chicagobooth.edu/review/how-effective-were-stimulus-checks-us). Damn so turns out struggling families did need these stimulus checks pretty urgently. Shocker. I also think that most people in finance would agree that tech stocks surged over covid because people needed fucking technology... People built PCs to play video games, used online shopping services because they couldn't go to malls, all that.
The next slide is supposed to support his point that the increase in stock prices doesn't allow young people to find "disruption". What. The only thing that matters to any investor is the percentage increase in value of the stock price after you've invested. It doesn't matter if 7 dollars is 1 share of apple or 0.04 of a share of apple. Its stock price going up by 100% means you get 14 dollars either way. I think this guy's arguments are getting dumber as the talk goes on, I actually had to go and find data to refute his points earlier on. Now arithmetic does the work for me, I should have hired a grade schooler to do my analysis.
His next point is about how algorithmic content selection is bad. Yeah its bad. Its bad for everyone, turns everyone into psychos. Though I think there's a very good argument to be made about how such content could affect developing brains. He makes a point about age-gating social media at the end of the talk. This is actually the only drastic measure he proposes that I agree with so I'll leave this alone too.
After a couple slides about Zuckerberg and TikTok (which I agree with, though I think Zuckerberg's damage probably leans more towards older people than young now), he gives a bunch of graphs showing upward trends in all sorts of terrible things happening to young people. Every single one is an issue of critical importance in the US, but importantly, no comparison to older people. For all we know, the trend on every graph could be the same or even worse for older generations. If I had written about this first then I'd go and find the data for it but at this point I just want to be done with this but can't stop without getting to the end so I'm just gonna slap this slide with lack of comparisons and move on.
His next slide shows the difference in 30 to 34 year olds who have at least one child, some of that is probably due to family planning but I still think its a great indicator of people not wanting to have children because its not affordable. Great point, I believe in it.
Next slide, oh god it's a happiness report. I think happiness reports are a fun conversational tidbit but I see no way for it to be reliable enough to be used as an argument in any semi-serious setting. That said, I have no idea how they do these measurements so maybe I'm wrong.
As if the happiness report wasn't bad enough, Galloway is gonna compare the biggest one-day market cap gain (in an unspecified time frame) to the budget of several policies implemented by the government. Oh man. This is too stupid, there's so many things to pick from it'd take too much effort to sort through them. Someone else please make the argument for me.
Then he says universal basic income should have been called negative income tax. Wow the frequency of good points is going up, though I think this is accompanied by an increase in the frequency of absolutely idiotic arguments.
Then he says we should eliminate capital gains tax deduction. The issue of taxing capital gains is a very serious one, but I don't think it actually matters that much how much we tax realised capital gains. Again, not an expert but here's my understanding. If you have a high net worth with a lot of it in stocks and you need cash, you don't have to sell them and get taxed on the realised gains. You go to the bank and say I want to borrow money, I'm going to put these stocks up as collateral so if I can't pay you back you can take these stocks which are somewhere around the value of the principal amount plus total interest over the course of this loan. Because the bank is now convinced they'll get the money back regardless of if you make the payments or not, they say ok here's the money you asked for at a nice low interest rate. Then you take the money, you keep your stocks, which will probably gain value at a rate that exceeds the interest rate by a pretty decent margin, and you can probably make your interest payments pretty easily because hey, you were rich to begin with. If you're really strapped for cash a couple years down the line, you can sell some of the stocks that are now worth more than they were before and cover your payments and not have to pay taxes on the rest that you don't have to sell. Free money. There's plenty more ways to avoid taxes if you're rich but you get my point by now. Now that's a lot of problems without a solution. Luckily we have some economists far more skilled than I am who work very hard to find solutions to these problems. Here's one example of a policy that may help (https://www.nytimes.com/interactive/2024/05/03/opinion/global-billionaires-tax.html). This is an opinion piece written by Gabriel Zucman (famous economist), for the New York Times. If you don't have an NYT subscription, sorry for giving a link you can't read but if you search Gabriel Zucman billionaire tax, you could probably get a decent idea of what this talks about. Here's Zucman tweeting his proposal for his suggestion (https://twitter.com/gabriel\_zucman/status/1763253132572729623). It probably requires a little more thinking than the NYT article but he did present this at the G20 so that might sound more exciting to you than some news article.
Then Galloway says "we need to remove 230 protection for all algorithmically-elevated content". Zero mention on what 230 protection is so here's an explanation (https://www.law.cornell.edu/uscode/text/47/230). Basically that was a fancy way of saying that companies should be held accountable of the content on their platform, even if it's posted by an unrelated third party. I'm not sure getting rid of it in its entirety is a great idea (though I have no arguments against that except Orwellian ones) but I certainly agree that most if not all social media platforms have abused this protection and it should be at the very least restricted. To what extent? Again, I have no clue.
Then he goes "break up Big Tech". That's the whole suggestion. This is a terrible idea but the fact that he doesn't elaborate more on how to do this, the ramifications of doing so, or really provide any explanation at all makes me automatically ignore this. Then he makes his point about age-gating social media, like I said before, I agree with it.
His next suggestions are universal pre-K, great idea, then "reinstate the expanded child-tax credit". Not sure what he's going on about here, child tax credit exists and like I said before, was just expanded. Then it's income-based affirmative action. I don't know what kind of affirmative action is best and that sounds like an interesting idea so I won't criticise it. I think the rest of his suggestions are pretty normative arguments so I'll leave those alone too.
Don't get me wrong, I wholeheartedly agree with the overall theme of his talk. I believe that young people in the US (and many places worldwide) are at a massive disadvantage when it comes to accumulating wealth, buying homes, inter-generational transfers, etc. But you cannot go up on a popular platform like this, make claims as sweeping as he has, and make suggestions as radical and drastic as he has, with garbage arguments and data like this. Saying the right things for the wrong reasons is arguably worse than just saying the wrong thing because it makes it easy for those who want the status quo to remain to make counterarguments. Given how divisive opinions have become over the past decade or so I guess I shouldn't be surprised at how many people are eating this up but it kinda scares me how easily people will eat up this shit as long as its for a cause that sounds like its going for some kind of radical change for the good of all and has some imaginary "them" as the common enemy to everyone.
So that's it, I've finally covered all his points. I'm free, thank fuck. I should really proofread this but this has been my past eight hours and my back is breaking from all this sitting, I'm just gonna post this and read it over tomorrow. Maybe do a tl;dr, fix some formatting.
EDIT: As u/myphriendmike and u/Mordoci have pointed out, my dummy corp example was just tax fraud, that's illegal and so it's a bad example, I've removed it. Zucman has some estimates on the "real" tax rate wealthy people (mostly billionaires) pay, maybe I'll include that at some point.
I also corrected my wording in some places.

Oakland County residents can get up to $2,000 to avoid water shutoffs, fix leaks
Oakland County residents can now apply for a new program to help cover their water and sewer bills, wipe away past due balances and pay for plumbing repairs.
The program, offering up to $2,000, is meant to provide relief for families hit with temporary financial hardships — such as a sudden job loss or medical expense — who don't qualify for existing water assistance, but who still struggle to afford water. The office of the Oakland County Water Resources Commissioner Jim Nash partnered with the United Way for Southeastern Michigan to launch the Hardship Assistance Program.
“In our ongoing efforts to ensure all Oakland County residents have access to affordable water, we’ve collected data that reveals a significant need to provide a safety net for hardworking families whose incomes are too high to qualify for existing water assistance programs,” Nash said in a news release this week. “These are people who earn above the federal poverty line but who often struggle to afford basic needs, including full and consistent access to affordable water for their families.”
Water affordability is top-of-mind for communities in the region. Metro Detroit officials have been at odds over proposed legislation seeking to implement a $2 monthly fee for water customers that would support an affordability fund water providers could tap to reduce bills for low-income residents.
Since 1980, the average cost of water service in the state — drinking water, sewerage and stormwater costs — increased 188% when adjusted for inflation, according to researchers from the University of Michigan, Michigan State University and consulting firm Safe Water Engineering. In 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic, more than 317,000 Michiganders were behind on their water bills.
The Oakland County program is funded by $300,000 in federal American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) dollars. Oakland County Water Resources and United Way are looking for donations to keep the program running beyond the pandemic relief funds. Oakland County estimates being able to help 100 households with the current funding.
Here's what Oakland County residents should know about the Hardship Assistance Program:
What does the program offer?
The Hardship Assistance Program is available to Oakland County residents who use municipal water and sewer services, and don't rely on a private well. The program offers up to $2,000 in assistance and is available on a first-come, first-served basis. It can cover plumbing repairs to mitigate water loss, water and sewer bill assistance and past due balances.
Who qualifies?
Oakland County residents who make up to 300% of the federal poverty level are eligible for the program. That translates to $93,600 for a family of four or $45,180 for one person.
According to the county, 22% of residents live in households that don't qualify for assistance under federal poverty guidelines but who still struggle to make ends meet. In other words, they fall within the United Way's ALICE threshold, meaning they aren't technically living in poverty but don't earn enough to afford the basics where they reside.
“We are grateful to partner with the Water Resources Commissioner to administer the Hardship Assistance Program for residents in Oakland County. Our partnership expands access to water assistance for families who typically are not eligible for other assistance programs," Darienne Driver Hudson, CEO of the United Way for Southeastern Michigan, said in the news release.
How to apply
To apply for the program, go to unitedwaysem.org/utility-assistance and scroll to the "Oakland County Water Bill and Plumbing Repair Assistance" section. There is no deadline for the program and it is available as long as funding is available.
