2024.06.09 15:40 throwaway4121212 My (38f) bf (38f) has been pretending to be broke. Is this financial abuse?

(38m)*** edit-he’s 38m
I’m sorry if I ramble, I feel so bamboozled.
I’ve been dating my bf for 5 years. The entire relationship he has acted like he has no money. I was a single mom when we met and I didn’t want him to feel like my child was his responsibility but at the same time, he’s never so much as taken us out to a restaurant and picked up the check. The most he’ll do is order the cheapest pizza in town.
He essentially invited himself on my birthday trip to a cabin in the mountains and then never offered any money to split the costs. When I do ask he gives me such a huge guilt trip about how he’s a home owner and his expenses are SO much more than mine renting. (They’re not) so I just always ended up paying.
I guess I didn’t mind doing it. I’m doing okay for myself. It never crossed my mind that he would take advantage of me. His frugality never bothered me until this recent revelation.
We recently sat down because living together and marriage has come up. (A side note, my child just graduated High School so it does feel like he waited until they were mostly self sufficient before bringing up the topic of marriage.) We’re discussing how to split the bills if we live together etc. He said he’ll need my help when it comes time for him to buy a new vehicle. He said we’ll pay off my car first. My car payment is 330. I drive a very reasonable fuel efficient car that I put a big down payment on. He said we’ll make double payments so he can buy a car and then we’ll pay 50/50 on his car. But he thinks his car payment will be closer to 800. So I’ll be paying more a month for longer because the “double payments” will just be the monthly car payment.
I’ll just cut to the chase. He has a 3+ month emergency fund. A healthy savings account and retirement. He’s far from broke. When I asked him why I paid his way this entire time while he stacked his money he said if we’re married it’s both of our money. Is it really though? It just sounds like he’s found someone dumb enough to take advantage of. Someone who has been a miser with their own money doesn’t all of a sudden become generous.

2024.06.09 14:40 just_addz Tips to create a routine? Examples of good routine

I believe this is my first post on here. Ive been practising without an audience and hogging on magic tricks which I don't perform for way too long. Too embarrassed to even share that here. Trying to break from that cycle. Hence I'm trying to structure 3-4 tricks together to form a routine. I mainly perform close-up magic (I have don't parlour and stage but those number of those shows can be counted on your hands). A pie chart of all the tricks I've learned would look something like- 40% card magic, 25% mentalism, 25% finger rings, rubber bands 10% misc (hot rods, loops, paddles, double cross etc)
I just don't know how to string together these tricks, and if I do, I usually don't remember what is the next trick and default to what I'm comfortable with which doesn't help with my growth as a magician. Apart from going out and performing to actual people (which I have done, just not as much as a professional magician), I would say I have technical skill and knowledge that is above average. Don't quote me on that though.
If you don't mind, could you share examples of good routines you have built and what makes it a good routine?
I apologise if this post is all over the place and is missing information, I'm new to this. I'll try to answer all the comments. Any help is appreciated!

I've played HOTAC a few times now, and it's always a blast, but while Josh and Sean and many other people in the community have developed a great system, there are a couple of things that I feel have some room for development.
The main issue I wanted to address is the ship upgrades. You start in an X-Wing or Y-Wing and at I3 you can pay a few points to upgrade to an A-Wing, B-Wing or HWK-290. The most obvious issue there is that there are a few more ships available in the Rebel faction that could reasonably be added. And less obviously, the B-Wing seems more like a cross-grade than an upgrade, the A-Wing seems like a downgrade, and the HWK is in a totally different class altogether.
While I have heard other people in the community commonly allow just about any other ship to be flown, it feels a little odd to have ships like the T-70 (a strictly better X-Wing), E-Wing (a way better X-Wing) and so-on. Why would you fly an X-wing when strictly better options are available?

The goal

So my goal was to increase the variety of ships that can be flown, filling diverse roles, and being at a similar power level. Something like different character classes and subclasses in an RPG. I hope you enjoy them and consider using them in a campaign!
Fortunately for me, Jim Bob over at infinitearenas.com has made an excellent resource to make custom cards at https://infinitearenas.com/homebrew.php which I used to make these cards.
Let's start with a quick one that's not a ship configuration:
https://preview.redd.it/eqcksoxaij5d1.png?width=1018&format=png&auto=webp&s=34829c646b805eb5e5b556c310dc3143ef9eb8f5
One of the issues I've noted with my HOTAC plays is that the squad leader almost never uses the coordinate action granted by the Squad Leader card because player actions are so valuable that it's rarely worth sacrificing your own action to give one to another player. This updated version effectively turns it into a linked action which is much more likely to get used. This could have additional limitations placed on it, but the simplicity is nice and making it red limits abuse a little.

The default configurations

Now let's take a look at the new configuration for the default X-Wing T-65:
https://preview.redd.it/3iyyyslcij5d1.png?width=734&format=png&auto=webp&s=4f341d053f30fce01bbb0581fe0a348a02c0887f
This card is a representation of the standard T-65 X-Wing in the new configuration format. One of the things I realised while working on this project is that since the card designer allows the action bar to be customised, it gives us the opportunity to bake in standard configurations and titles into the card, allowing you to do away with additional cards. Servomotor S-Foils is a flippable card that represents the S-Foil wings being open or closed, and when closed grants you a boost action and focus to red boost linked action at the cost of reducing your primary attack.
So this card allows us to effectively incorporate the results into a single rule and action bar on one card. It's not 100% exactly the same, but it's close enough, and is in the spirit of the simplifications made in the official Standard Loadout cards.
https://preview.redd.it/vvpoxgxdij5d1.png?width=734&format=png&auto=webp&s=1559030e62c70e102c9154425646dd8c6b446ba0
There is nothing special to note about the default BTL-A4 Y-Wing card, except to notice the upgrade bar at the bottom. This is a handy way to show what upgrades can be added to each ship. I intend to colour them in groupings by Initiative/Level, but these are mostly following the HOTAC standard of all the upgrades to the left of the first Talent being always available; the first Talent at I3, the next slot at I4, another Talent at I5 and a Talent and Modification slot at I6.

The upgrade configurations

All of these configurations are considered more or less equivalent in power level, so they all cost the same. They are worth more than 5 points, but 5 points is what HOTAC uses, so that's what I'm going with for now.
Let's look a the Y-Wings:
Y-Wing Corsair configuration card
Y-Wings are already start strong and really don't need much of a boost if any. You can play the whole campaign in a default Y-Wing and not feel like you're missing out. But the Rebel Alliance has many shady connections and scoundrels in its rogues gallery, so as you'll see there is a lot of Scummy representation in the fleet.
This is a very simple config that allows Scum faction upgrades and adds an Illicit slot.
Y-Wing Heavy Bomber configuration
While the Y-Wing is most often depicted as a slow heavy dogfighter, its main role is as a bomber and torpedo carrier capable of posing a threat to capital ships. This config makes the painful choice to lose that staple turret slot to load up on ordinance, adding an extra bomb and Torpedo slot.
Those torpedo slots can also be used as Missile slots, giving you access to any ordinance available. The now useless Rotate Turret action has been removed, and the Reload action is now white, and red Reloads are now linked actions.
Finally, if you're like me and do more damage to yourself with bombs than to the enemy, you've got 2 charges to spend to prevent damage from your own bomb or flying over an obstacle.
That's it for the Y-Wings. Let's take a look at the X-Wings!
X-Wing Partisan Renegade configuration
OK you probably saw this one coming from what I said about the Corsair Y-Wing. Like the Corsair, this simply adds an Illicit slot and the ability to equip Scum upgrades. Moving on!
X-Wing Endor Refit configuration
This one is inspired by the standard loadout X-Wings from the Battle over Endor scenario pack. The action bar and abilities come straight off those cards. The action bar is slightly better (gaining a Roll to red Focus linked action).
The Locked S-Foils does more or less the same thing as what I did with my reinterpretation of Servomotor S-Foils, even simpler in wording, but more of a nerf in practice since the deplete token affects ordinance, not just a primary attack, and will trigger after performing any boost, not just one performed in your action phase.
But it gains It's a Trap!, giving re-rolls for running with the pack. It also gains a Missile slot which is very nice.
X-Wing Prototype T-70 configuration
How do add a ship that is a strict upgrade of an existing ship without making the other versions redundant? In this case the answer is both to improve the other ships (as above) while lowering the new ship a little to the same level.
But not by much. This is a T-70 without the free shield and Tech slot. It gets the integrated config treatment, the T-70 dial, and Cannon slot. And because it's a "prototype", you can be justified using a T-65 or T-70 model as you prefer.
X-Wing Prototype E-Wing configuration
This one needed more of a compromise to balance. It gains the E-Wing dial and action bar, but keeps the X-Wing stat line. It gains the System slot, but not the Tech slot. Most importantly it loses the I3 Talent slot, making a long term ability sacrifice for that sweet dial and full action bar.
I didn't think the E-Wing's version of Experimental Scanners made sense in this prototype craft as printed, so I made it a 2-time use ability - which is actually better than the original's limitation of being unable to acquire locks at range 1 which is something you are likely to want to do with a linked lock off a reposition.
So it's kind of its own thing, not just a watered down E-Wing. And again, being a prototype, you are justified in using whatever model you prefer. In my case I'm not a fan of the E-Wing model, and prefer to use a 3D printed BSG Raptor that I've painted in various liveries.
B-Wing Endor Refit configuration card
This is another config pretty much lifted from the Battle over Endor pack. It only has a single Cannon slot, but gains a Missile and Device slot. It has the action bar from the Endor standard loadout B-WIngs, and the It's a Trap! ability that promotes running in packs.
B-Wing B6 Blade Wing Prototype
This is basically the default HOTAC B-Wing with the integrated configuration treatment for the ability and action bar. B6 Blade Wing Prototype is a title that in the standard game is currently only available to Hera in the B-WIng, and it adds a Gunner slot. So you get one with this configuration too!
A-Wing RZ-2 Prototype
The A-wing was the toughest configuration to develop. A-Wings are fast and agile, and get an extra Talent slot compared to other ships. By the time you get them to a fully upgraded I6 you can have 5 shields and a number of defensive abilities that makes up for their initial fragility. But the problem is keeping them alive until you get there. Talents, shields and levelling up are all very expensive, and if you get shot down those expensive upgrades can be lost.
In addition to the inherent fragility, the A-Wing doesn't have much firepower aside from a single missile slot, and not much in the way of slot variety aside from the Talents. All of which makes A-Wings a tough sell compared to some of the other ships.
To try and address the survivability issue, I added the Fast target ability which allows you to take a strain token to gain an evade token after executing a speed 3-5 manoeuvre. So you trade a defence dice for one attack for a guaranteed evade. If you don't need to spend it on the first defence roll you have it for later, and you or a teammate might have an ability to remove the strain token before you get attacked. You can use the ability while stressed, and still get your action.
It's not as good as the TIE Defender's Full throttle ability, but maybe it's good enough. Maybe I should just add that ability instead. Either way Jukeing A-Wings will likely be a thing.
As for Vectored Thrusters vs Vectored Cannons I say why not both? At first I was thinking to make them a double-sided config that you can flip in the system phase like S-Foils. Then I remembered I did away with those, and rewrote it so both abilities are always active and you can choose which to use by flipping a recurring charge.
I also gave them the Tech slot I took off the E-Wing. Is it enough? I don't know. Nobody wants to fly A-Wings around here. If you try it out, let me know!
HWK-290 Mouldy Crow configuration card
Talk about an embarrassment of riches. The HWK-290 has all the things. With the Mouldy Crow title it's basically an X-Wing that has an additional turret, an interesting action bar, a stop manoeuvre, and all the fun slots, including Crew. It's kind of a lot, and a bit too good comparatively.
So I figured since there should only be one Mouldy Crow, there really should be 2 viable HWK builds, one of which is Mouldy Crow which is more attack focussed, and another more support oriented one.
So Mouldy Crow first. The only tweaks here really are to remove one Modification slot, and replacing the System slot with a Gunner. Yes, I added a gunner. Since you're already taking Perceptive Copilot you might as well combo that with Bistan for a double tap.
OK as a nerf, that's a fail, but for fun, it's a win. Nobody is making you take the combo. You have options.
Moving on!
HWK-290 Smuggler's Refit config card
It's a Scummy HWK. Compared to Mouldy Crow, your Jam action becomes white, you lose the Gunner and gain a second Crew along with two Illicit slots. Not much else to say about this.
Here's another quick one:
https://preview.redd.it/26i36pypjj5d1.png?width=734&format=png&auto=webp&s=40dd9da3a3f81d72999966429ef1c5365bd5c566
Seems fine to add more or less as-is. Compared to the Y-Wing, it exchanges the turret for an extra attack die and rear arc. It gains a shield, but is a slightly bigger target. It has no Device or Illicit slots, but can equip Republic upgrades and pilot abilities. It's the only ship here that has access to Republic upgrades.
Sheathipede Support Shuttle configuration card
This is the ship I felt least confident about, next to the A-Wing. The HWK-290s are pretty great, but I wanted to add one more support option. The problem is that the U-Wing is a bit too much, and the Sheathipede and Attack Shuttle don't have much to offer with their standard slots and action bars.
The only way I could raise the ship to a similar level was to just keep the stat line and just make stuff up. It's intended to be a dedicated support ship, and because of it's smooth modern looking body I decided to give it a high-tech sub-theme.
The base concept I basically lifted from the Resistance Y-Wing in that it has a bunch of slots that can add actions to the action bar, and if you perform an action granted by an upgrade, you also get a linked white calculate. And the default action bar comes with Focus, Coordinate into Calculate, Jam into Calculate, and red Barrel Roll and Boost.
The upgrade slots include an Astromech, 2 Crew, 2 Tech and the standard 3 Mods and 3 Talents.
It seems decent enough, and not overpowered. It's certainly unique enough to make it a real consideration for players drawn to support ships. But I wonder if it will be looked down upon for being so far away from the standard version of the ship.
And now last, but certainly not least is maybe my crazy A-Wing alternative:
https://preview.redd.it/108q0lhyaj5d1.png?width=918&format=png&auto=webp&s=073f5574f0d828b3e4a3f2b07645dc4354eb8a0d
What's a harder sell than an A-Wing? How about an A-Wing with no shields that wants to joust?
Apart from the ability to equip Scum upgrades and pilot abilities this is pretty much just a vanilla Fang fighter with upgrade slots similar to the A-Wing. What really sets it apart though is the approach to survivability. Instead of adding in defensive abilities to help keep it alive, instead the focus is on making the consequences to being destroyed less costly, encouraging fearless engagement with the enemy like a true Mandalorian.
At first I was thinking to add an ability along the lines of "When you make an ejection roll, you may change one result to a blank". To thematically justify this, I was thinking that the pilot could be wearing a Mandalorian armoured flight suit, able to weather the vacuum of space until rescued.
And then I remembered the Mandalorian Super Commandos upgrade, which placed a little cardboard chit representing a team of Mandalorians that could move around the board and shoot things and generally get in the way. And I had my answer.
https://preview.redd.it/kddiznjnjj5d1.png?width=734&format=png&auto=webp&s=35a1b75d91ec0249cb6a5abc4a4a6ab04edc873a
Here are the associated rules:
This remote can only be deployed when the pilot's ship is destroyed. An ejection roll is only performed if this remote is destroyed, or it is docked with another ship that gets destroyed.
To deploy, place using the 1 bank template out the front or rear guides of the destroyed ship.
When docked with another ship you may make this remote's attack from that ship's rear arc as a bonus attack.
So if the Fang gets destroyed, the pilot will deploy, and can slowly fly around the board making small attacks until it can grapple on to a friendly ship and escape.
And that's it so far. All of these cards are freshly designed and un-tested (we are going to use them in the campaign we just started). I'm sure there will be some tweaks here and there.
If you try them out let me know what you think. I'm interested in your thoughts and opinions regardless. It's been a ton of work, I hope you enjoy it.
Cheers, Scott

New Durge Tav - Vaemira
Vaemira belonged to a well-known house that dearly worshipped Lolth. But when her family's ceremony was coming up to name her the head of the clan, she found out the ugly truth. Not wanting her life to be chosen for her, she ran from the ceremony to set out her own path.
During this time, she had made plenty of friends & enemies. Making deals, double-crossing and taking everything from life itself. Years had passed, but the hound had followed. A deal's a deal and nothing could break it.
Should she have stayed and completed her clan's ceremony? We don't know. It is too late to think about the what-ifs. Corpses lay all around, wolf in sheep's clothing, tentacles gripping her throat.
Memories gone, but only flashes. One word could be uttered.
"Vaemira"

2024.06.09 10:12 OverwatchShake Possible theory as to Ryan Cohen's plan: no moass. Discussion invited.

Hi everyone. Been here since jan '21, rarely make posts, always offer reassurance because I've always been sure of the thesis. If there is still an outsized short position, I am in until it is resolved, because an open short is nothing but a promise to buy a share at some date in the future. I've never seen any indication that they closed and the ride has been fun as hell.
But now I've been struggling to understand the second offering of shares and have been thinking a lot on it. I've landed on something that kind of makes sense with all the hints from Ryan Cohen, Larry Cheng, etc.
We're not squeezing them, we're cooking them. Boiling them like a frog. Why?
Because squeezing them is hard and unreliable. They could and would possibly just turn off the buy button again -- same story, not enough collatoral, the clearing house would not sanction it without it, doubling down on their lame excuse all those years ago, all payment for order flow brokers just shutting down buying.
Moreover, if the squeeze is not powerful enough they wouldn't even have to do that, they could just close some shorts at the bottom, sell overpriced options premium, and when the squeeze runs out of steam short it near the top, try to scare new investors and kick the can, collecting the premium from options to offset short term losses.
Moreover the company would be under scrutiny to show they did not facilitate the squeeze.
I think Ryan Cohen is simply going to offer new shares every time the price jumps, raise the hard bottom price of the stock, buy shares and become a holding company like Berkshire Hathaway. He just wants the shorts off his back, out of the company, while using the periodic sneezes to bolster Gamestop's balance.
Currently at $27 Gamestop's market cap is at 8.5 billion. If Gamestop has 4.25 billion in the bank that means it can never go under $15 on brand value and cash on hand alone. The shares would probably do well over time as the stock market usually goes up. And every time the price sneezes he does it again, raising the floor of the stock.
If the short position is huge and multiple times the float this would cook them -- as when the floor of the stock rises to $30, then $40 eventually the entire short position would still be underwater with no means to ever go green again. Institutional money would flood in any time it dips below the floor.
If the short position is substantial but not multiple times the float -- this would give the shorts a potential way to get out while benefiting the company and long-term investors (not speculators, which technically we are hoping for moass).
Lastly, it would definitely clear the company of all suspicions of manipulation, since they gave the short side many outs.
I'm not a finance professional, and I don't know anything. I'm hoping to learn in the comments what smarter folk than I think about Ryan Cohen's intentions and what awaits us going forward.
Not meant to fud. Even while working this out, selling never crossed my mind, it is in all scenarios in my best interest to hold. Even in the "worse" scenario, all risk of losing is removed over time by the rising floor.
I'm still hoping for moass, but I'm not sure RC wants it. I feel that like chess-players we should objectively evaluate our position and not blindly hope. I'm interested in your thoughts -- especially from the people that are experts in finance or management, but feel free to weigh in with anything.

2024.06.09 10:07 Greenie1O2 Speculating .3 levels part 3

3.3 The Spider And The Fly
"The skittering of many legs haunt the harvesting grounds at night, these leafcutters will need to be vigilant"
This level takes place in a wide open clearing with lots of harvesting patches spread throughout. The map is 1.5 times bigger than in 3.1.
Challenge mode is available as phorid flies.
The mission begins - this leaf cutter ant queen has dug out a small burrow near a vast rainforest clearing. With abundant vegetation nearby, the colony's harvesting operations are sure to be bountiful.
There is an underground chamber that must be dug out before excavating the entrance. It contains a gigantic tarantula molt.
You dig out the underground chamber - the ants have excavated the burrow of Theraphosa Blondi, the Goliath birdeater, these gargantuan spiders live in hollow cavities under the leaf litter and are so large that they have been known to capture and devour small birds. The colony is fortunate, this burrow is abandoned, occupied only by the discarded skin of its previous inhabitant.
You dig to the surface - although the birdeater has forfeited her previous burrow, she may still remain in this area, the nearby tree hollows provide perfect ambush spots for capturing prey, the colony must choose their foraging paths wisely.
The map is large and flat, the saplings are mostly growing opposite of your nest, you need to travel large distances to harvest leaves.
There are four trees on the edges of the map, each one has a hole at the base that leads to an underground system, the inside of which is covered by spider webs that slow down ants. during the day, the tarantula could be hiding in any of these holes. During the night, it emerges to hunt, roaming the clearing and killing anything that crosses it's path.
The birdeater tarantula is a titan, only slightly smaller than the bullfrog. Each bite executes an ant, it can run away at low health. It's the fastest creature in the game.
You enter any of the empty tree hollows for the first time - a scouting party of attas has uncovered one of the birdeater's ambush spots, and it appears to have been used recently. The walls are covered in thick webs that make movement difficult. Thankfully the spider isn't present, for now.
You enter an occupied burrow for the first time - the ants have entered the tarantulas nest! Sending the intrusion, it runs out to face the soldiers.
You encounter the tarantula on the surface for the first time - the harvesting trail has been disrupted by the birdeater tarantula. Out on the hunt tonight, she won't shy away from the buffet of prey conveniently exposed on the surface. If the ants do not possess the numbers to drive it away they should retreat while they still can.
Once you have encountered the tarantula for the first time the objective appears - eliminate the birdeater
The objective appears - with their nighttime harvest being cut short by the birdeater's hunt, this colony has little chance to grow and flourish. The only obstacle standing in their way is the spiders rule over the clearing, it must be eliminated.
You drive away the spider - feeling momentarily overwhelmed, the birdeater has decided to retreat into her burrow to heal. The ants should stockpile vegetation while they can, she won't be gone forever.
When encountered in one of her burrows, the spider has double the attack speed and all ants are slowed by the web, making her much more difficult to engage.
On the third night, the Goliath birdeater invades your nest and only leaves after killing the queen.
The tarantula enters your nest - the birdeater tarantula has followed one of the harvesting trails into the nest! Driven by hunger, she bulldozes through the nest tunnels, this could mean extinction for the colony!
Crab spiders hide on the leaves of plants and have different colours depending on what plant they are on. They insta-kill any ant that walks to the leave on which they are ambushed (Except for majors). They sometimes switch plants.
You get ambushed by a crab spider on a leaf - a harvesting worker has been subdued by misumenia vata, a crab spider. similarly to certain reptiles, this master of ambush can change color to blend in with its surroundings. Once prey enters striking distance, the spider swiftly incapacitates it with a single venomous bite.
You encounter a crab spider on the ground - a crab spider has rushed into the trail. Out on open terrain and with no ambush spot in sight, it will likely be made short work of by the soldiers.
At night, poison frogs roam the clearing, any ant that touches them will be poisoned and will inevitably die. they can consume ants to heal themselves and hop away at low health.
You encounter a poison frog - an ant has been snatched away by an Amazonian poison frog, their name is well earned and the leaf cutters should think twice about engaging such a foe. With It's bright coloration warning the jungle predators of the potency of its venom even the birdeater gives them a wide berth.
Bullet ants roam the forest floor in small packs.
You encounter bullet ants - the leafcutter have encountered a scouting party of bullet ants, paraponera clavata. These fierce warriors are equipped with powerfull stingers and a pair of deadly slicing jaws, and the attas have encroached on their territory.
You encounter the tarantula on the surface again - hungry once again, the birdeater wrecks havoc on the attas harvesting trail and slaughters tens of workers in the ongoing panic.
You win by killing the tarantula - it's exoskeleton mauled by the sharp Atta mandibles, the Goliath birdeater could no longer hold out. It's mangled body will serve as a warning to all jungle invertebrates. The rainforest belongs to the leafcutters.
You lose to the tarantula - as the Goliath birdeater dug up the nest, it was only a matter of time before she sunk her fangs into the queen, paralysing her and sucking out her liquified innards. Unable to stand up to this monster, the colony will wither away and disappear from this clearing.
Night falls - the sky darkens, and the tarantula emerges from her lair to hunt. The leafcutters must harvest with caution.
Day arrives - as the sun's first morning rays shine over the canopy, the birdeater retreats into her cool burrow to digest the nights catch. She will be back soon.

2024.06.09 10:07 ItWasWalpole-alt Spain show their class to beat Northern Ireland

https://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/live/cg3315pz4jxt
Northern Ireland's three-game unbeaten run came to an end with a comprehensive 5-1 defeat by Spain at the Son Moix Stadium.
Michael O'Neill's side had taken the lead through a Daniel Ballard header in only the second minute of the game, but the quality of their hosts was evident throughout, most notably in a first half when they found the net four times.
On a night when 16-year-old Barcelona forward Lamine Yamal again impressed, Spain would level the game through Pedri just 10 minutes after falling behind.
Goals from Alvaro Morata, another from Pedri and Fabián Ruiz had Spain 4-1 up at the break, with substitute Mikel Oyarzabal adding the only goal of the second half.
Luis de la Fuente's squad now turn their attention fully to Euro 2024, with their campaign beginning on 15 June against Croatia.
The game would represent an international debut for St Mirren midfielder Caolan Boyd-Munce and it was his delivery that found the head of Ballard for Northern Ireland's opener.
There were just 69 seconds on the clock when the Sunderland defender rose in the box to meet the teasing delivery and arched his header over Unai Simon, the Athletic Bilbao goalkeeper getting a hand to the ball but unable to stop it finding his net.
Northern Ireland's lead would last just 10 minutes with the Spanish side, as expected, monopolising the ball.
O'Neill's side have made the most of limited ball during their recent improved form, most especially against Scotland last time out, but here there was simply no way to relieve the pressure.
With Spain regathering the ball quickly high up the field time and time again, they would push their full-backs so far forward at times it looked as if they were playing only Nacho and Robin le Normand at the back.
That would create plenty of problems for Northern Ireland down the flanks and, while their equaliser came when Rodri was afforded too much space in midfield and fired into the corner from 25 yards, it was from wide deliveries where Spain looked most dangerous.
They moved 2-1 ahead on 19 minutes when Jesus Navas produced a brilliant cross from the right for Morata to nod home via the post, and doubled their lead 10 minutes later when the dangerous Nico Williams powered clear down the opposite wing and pulled back for Pedri.
Five minutes later, Yamal twisted and turned before measuring a brilliant ball into the Northern Ireland box for Ruiz to finish off.
While Spain were in complete control, Northern Ireland should have cut the deficit before the break with Simon only able to parry Shea Charles' effort from the edge of the box before Isaac Price blazed over when the rebound was poked back his way by Jamie Reid.
A series of substitutions saw the game lose its momentum and it would take until the hour mark for Spain to add to their lead in the second half.
Northern Ireland, though, felt they should have been awarded a free-kick before the ball found the net when Price was caught in possession by Yamal.
The officials saw nothing wrong with the challenge and Yamal's pull back gave substitute Oyarzabal a tap-in at the front post to follow on from his hat-trick against Andorra earlier in the week.
With their Euro 2024 opener coming closer into view, it was perhaps understandable that the intensity shown by Spain in the first half was largely lacking in the second, with Bailey Peacock-Farrell finding himself with less to do as the game wore on.
Indeed, it was Northern Ireland who could have scored next when another chance fell to Price, this time found by Dale Taylor, but the Standard Liege man was this time denied by Simon.
Later Ballard just could not find the right connection on another threatening set-piece, but it was Joselu who had the last real chance of the game only to fire over the bar from ten yards out.
While Spain head to the Euros among the favourites, Northern Ireland's players will have another opportunity to finish their own season on a high when facing Andorra in Murcia on Tuesday night.

2024.06.09 10:00 RationalOverRage Students turning on me, but lying to each other, do I be honest with them?

So I have had one student, let’s call her Sally, who has been incredibly disrespectful and toxic all year. Sally has also managed to convince two of her friends to be disrespectful to me, who are normally not (let’s call them Amy and Fran). Sally and Amy didn’t complete a group presentation project on-time and thus failed. Initially they blamed me for not giving them an extension.
Then Sally emailed me some research she did for the presentation project and told me Amy was the reason she failed and asked me to never put her in a group with Amy again because Amy does nothing but drag her down. Sally’s mark increased slightly based on the research submitted, but she still failed the unit. Sally never said that her request to not be in a group with Amy again was to be kept confidential.
Sally continued to be horrible to me for the rest of the semester and continued to always work with Amy and both Amy and Sally would get mad at me if I did let them work together. She only seemed to blame Amy right after failures, but then would go right back to blaming her teacher.
Amy is now emailing me saying that she heard Sally passed the unit because she handed in some research. Amy is blaming me for not telling her that she could have passed the unit if she had handed in some research. Of course… these are all lies. Sally did not pass the unit and the research she handed in did virtually nothing to her grade.
I want to tell Amy that Sally is lying to her about passing the unit to preserve my reputation of treating every student fairly. I also want to tell Amy that Sally also requested to not be in a group with her again. The hope here is that Amy will see that Sally is a toxic person that blames others for her failures and it is not actually me, the teacher, who should be blamed for both of their failures. Maybe Amy could realize that Sally is not a good influence and there are other friends she should associate with who don’t lied and double-cross her. Should tell Amy this?
TLDR: should I tell one student that her friend, who has convinced her that I am the reason for both of their poor grades, actually privately blames the student for her poor grade ?

2024.06.09 09:31 KoreanBunz Japan Trip Report (Last week of May and first week of June)

So, finally, my SO and I back home after an exciting Japanese Vacation. It was on our bucket list for years and we are so glad we did it and it went smoothly.
We landed at Narita Airport at 7 AM and finished our immigration and customs by 7.45 AM. We bought our Passmo Passport from Keisei Information Centre in literally two mins without a queue and were in the three persons queue at the Limousine Bus stop for our airport transfer to Shinjuku. I highly suggest the Limousine Bus Service as it was the most convenient and comfortable ride from NRT Airport to Shinjuku. The staff speaks English and put your luggage in the storage compartment, without you to have to worry about it. You can buy the tickets of limousine bus on KLOOK or at the arrivals hall of NRT airport.
From Shinjuku stop where the limousine bus dropped us and handed our luggage to us, we took a taxi to our hotel. It costed us 1200 yen and 10 mins to our hotel in Nishi Shinjuku. We had typed the hotel name and address in Japanese and printed it out. That piece of paper proved very useful after a 12 hour flight and 2 hour bus ride. We just handed out the printed paper to our taxi driver and he dropped us off at our hotel without a single word exchanged between us except thank you (arigato gozaimasu). It took away the anxiety of explaining our hotel address to taxi drivers in English and broken Japanese.
Our hotel was APA Hotel & Resort NishiShinjuku Gochome Eki Tower. We had booked an early check in for additional payment of 1000 yen per hour. We reached our double room on higher floor with city view and were shocked by the size of it. NO AMOUNT of research and reading up could mentally prepare us for the size of it. It was TINYYYYYYYY. But, very well appointed with night suits, kimono robes, room slippers, onsen slippers, huge TV, small bath tub, king size bed, working station with a chair, etc. We soon found our groove in the tiny room and found it to be very comfortable once the luggage was under the bed. I would highly recommend this hotel as it has an onsite onsen, swimming pool (payable), speedy WiFi, English speaking staff, vending machines, laundromat, luggage storage and transfer facility. But, its biggest plus point is that it’s 100 mts away from the NishiShinjuku Gochome Station with an elevator exit. That was the most convenient for us.
After relaxing in the tiny room for about 3 hours, we left the hotel at 2 PM for Meiji Jingu Shrine. We used the subway for it and it was very convenient. We thoroughly enjoyed the peaceful zen walk into the forest like atmosphere to reach the shrine. It was completely empty barring three more people about 1 km ahead of us. When we reached the Meiji Jingu Shrine we were greeted by a crowd. We spent maximum of 30 mins in the shrine and then walked to Takeshita Street. It was a 15 min relaxed walk and we enjoyed it. We LOVED the Takeshita Street and the hustle bustle there, spent around two hours, shopping for street wear fits and eating the crepes and tanghulu sweet treats. From there we walked the Cat Street, which was almost deserted and we didn’t even realise that we had already finished walking the iconic Cat Street until we asked a local. From Cat Street we walked to Shibuya, it was a 25 minutes walk and I had started to feel the tiredness by now. We found a Tully’s Cafe about 5 mins away from Shibuya crossing and chilled there for one hour having coffee and smoothies.
We reached the Shibuya Crossing by 6.30 PM and the excitement to see thousands of people crossing the iconic junction had pumped the energy back into me and I was ready for more exploring. We took a look at the Hachiku Statue and made our way up to Shibuya Sky for our entry slot of 7 PM. It was the most magical moment when we took the elevator up to the open observatory deck. The sky was turning red and rust and the Tokyo skyline lights were just firing up. We saw the sunset for about 15 minutes before the sky turned dark and then we enjoyed the night light views of Tokyo. It was absolutely STUNNING. Highly recommend booking the 6.45-7 PM slot for Shibuya Sky. We booked it via KLOOK about one month in advance.
We got down from Shibuya Sky by 8.30 PM and although we had a reservation at a vegan restaurant at Shinjuku for 9 PM, I personally couldn’t last any longer. I was extremely tired by that time so we took a subway back to our hotel. We rested in the hotel and had Seven Eleven ice cream and onigiri for dinner in our room and rested till about 11 PM.
At around 11 PM my FOMO kicked in and my partner and I took a cab to Omoide Yakucho drinking lane. It took us 8 mins by cab and 1000 yen. We had a local beer at the Albatross bar there and we loved the atmosphere and experience. We explored some more places in that lane but Albatross Bar was the best vibe. We then walked to Hotel Gracery to see the Godzilla head and Shinjuku neon billboards and lights. We found the area super greasy but it had a vibe of its own. We walked a bit further and found a nice beer brewery and bar and had a few beers there and it was amazing. We left that place by 12.30 AM and took a taxi back to the hotel. It costed us 900 yen. All in all it was the MOST FUN and ICONIC first day of a Tokyo trip. We had clocked 22,000 steps on Day 1.
Day 2:
We woke up by 8 AM and left the hotel by 10 AM. We first reached the Shinjuku Gyoen National Garden and had breakfast at the traditional Japanese tea house at the national garden. We relaxed in the garden and explored till about 12.30 pm and we left for TeamLabs Planet. We reached there and booked ourself the lunch experience at Uzu Restaurant at Tokyolabs Planet. It was hands down the ABSOLUTE BEST lunch experience with the yummiest bowl of Vegan Ramen. We enjoyed the immersive experience and were ready for experiencing the main exhibit by 3.30 PM. We spent two hours in the exhibit and it was absolutely the highlight of our trip. We both lovedddddd TeamLabs Planet experience and can’t wait to be back.
At around 6 pm we left for Asakusa area from Teamlabs and reached the Senso Ji temple at around 6.45 pm. We explored the shopping streets around the temple and watched the sun go down behind the temple. It was just so so so so beautiful. We had dinner at a roadside restaurant there and they were plenty. My SO loved the area so much that he made me promise that we will stay in this area instead of Shibuya or Shinjuku on our next visit to Tokyo. The man has taste.
We were back to our hotel by 10 PM and had drinks at our hotel bar and slept off by 12 AM.
We had successfully used the subway system without getting lost but we had also successfully AVOIDED starting or ending our subway journeys from the terrifying Shinjuku Station for first two days and we highly recommend everyone to do the same.
Because on Day 3 we got lost at Shinjuku station and it was NOT FUN. On day 3 we checked out of our hotel by 10 am and took the subway to Don Qui store Shinjuku (our hotel stored our luggage for us post check out). We spent 2.5 hours in Donki and other Shinjuku shopping places and while returning with our shopping bags we got lost in Shinjuku station for about an hour and I personally felt super disoriented but my SO took over the navigation and somehow we reached our hotel by 2 pm.
We then took our bags and made our way to Tokyo International Cruise Terminal via subway and metro. A sweet local Japanese girl guided us to the metro stop which was two floors above from where we were and she very kindly travelled with us on the escalators two whole floors up. I had never experienced such kindness from a stranger and was truly grateful and overwhelmed by her kindness.
We then embarked on our cruise ship at 3.30 PM and I will write the cruise report in the next post.
But, I must say that these 2-2.5 days in Tokyo were genuinely I had dreamed of and more. Although it was tiring t walk 20k steps a day but it was more than worth it. I can’t wait to be back.

2024.06.09 09:13 DragonStryk72 Valoria Saga (Chapter 2)

Prev Royal Road Patreon
Karghol stepped forward. As Rob he might be scared, but he'd been the leader of the group for a long time, operating as our main tank across a ton of games, and now, I could see him taking that step again, "Okay, first thing's first. If they're gonna pop us out of this from the outside, then that's not on us, but we've all seen this anime. If they're not coming, then we need to get to the endgame as fast as possible."
"Nope," I shook my head, surprising even myself at how quickly I'd said something.
He turned, "What? I mean, we gotta get out ahead of this."
"In most games, I'd agree, but not here, not in this game. Also, side-point but decision time for everyone: Real names or character names? I can't keep flipping between them. Lugh is what's on my party registry, so I'm sticking with Lugh," It seemed small but wasn't.
I'd learned well enough that giving people all of the information was most often counter-productive at best. Giving people a small, immediate choice was far preferable and got them on the path to understanding better. Temur snorted slightly at the absurdity, "Well, I suppose you can call me either Temur, or Temur. Whichever floats your boat."
Several groans came out, and finally, some laughter. I mean, it was dad joke humor to be sure, but jokes were probably going to become a much more specific thing for us. From there, everyone chose their character names, either because it was simply easier given the nametags in our party rotation, or because they just didn't want everyone knowing their real ones. Khargol however, was a slight agitated, "Alright, so why not speedrun it?"
"Because speedrunners die and reset constantly."
The slight mirth died out in the room, but Khargol wasn't ready to yield the point, "I've watched you do a no-death run of Dark Souls!"
I nodded, "And do you have any idea how many times I died in that game getting to that level of skill? Look, this isn't Dark Souls. That game has set difficulty levels. Yeah, it's got solid AI, but here? The AI adapts to tactics, and I'm pretty sure the beta test players are about to learn that the hard way."
Everyone was a bit curious at the statement, but it was Shelara who spoke up, "What does that 'adaptive AI' mean?"
I sighed, and took a seat at the head of the table, with Khargol finally sitting down next to me, "It means the AI of the system is learning. Beta testers essentially get to play ahead of the general public to try and stress test the system under actual play conditions. Most usually, they'll try to learn as many exploits as possible, so even if they start out on brand new characters, they're still going to be far ahead of the pack, getting gear and coin ahead of others. Assume that the beta testers have watched things like SAO or other 'trapped in a video game' style series, and they're doing the same as Khargol is suggesting. Problem is, that's exactly what a bunch of them already did, and if the AI works like it's supposed to, then it's ready for them.
"For Valorian Saga, one of the biggest selling points was its adaptive AI system, a system that learns. What that means is that the system behind bosses has already learned those exploits from beta testers and has some sort of answer for them, and they're going to run dead into them."
Chrysta sat forward, leaning her elbows on the table, at least in part to show off her biceps, "Well if a speedrun is out of the question, then what do we do instead?"
Shelara cut back in, "But... shouldn't we try and go save the beta testers?"
I considered, "Shelara, in answer to your question, we can't. Even assuming we could catch up to wherever they're at, there's almost no chance they'd listen to us if we did. They're just as likely to assume we're rivals, or to think we're idiots, but regardless they won't be following our instructions just because we say so. As far as they're concerned, they already know this game, and we're a bunch of sprouts who are panicking. Even if we could get past that point, we don't know the game like they do, and we're more likely to end up needing saving before we ever get to them.
"As to the other question, Chrysta, what we do now is finish up the starter quests, then we use our flyers to join the militia."
Every MMO veteran groaned openly. Arkadi especially was annoyed at the concept, "Come on, man, faction-grinding on day two? We're not even out of the gate yet!"
I'd expected this, and checked my in-game clock, and swore under my breath. We needed to get moving, with only roughly eighteen minutes of daylight left, "Guys, that's why we need to join the militia. It's safe, and grinding up our faction rep with Valoria opens a lot of doors, not least of which is giving us barracks space to live in free of charge, basic equipment upgrades, and getting coin. That's just the short-term gains. Yeah, not much, but it gives us a foundation. We get the lay of the land, and we build up our strategies. There's another reason though, and it's important."
Khargol nodded, "As militia, we get arrest powers in line with the laws of Farrelston."
"Wait, we'd be cops?" Shelera seemed slightly hyped about the concept.
I nodded, "More or less. We aren't out in the main room right now cause everyone's losing their minds out there. They're all coming to terms with the idea that this place is where they might die, and that breeds desperate reactions. Fourteen million players split between fifty servers, giving an average server population of... two-hundred-eighty thousand per server give or take for server popularity. Assume maybe one percent of that go fully around the bend and get violent, and that gives us two thousand eight hundred violent criminals that just hit the city on this server that have the ability to level up within the system.
"Farrelston has to be a safe space for players to return to, but that can't happen if there isn't order, and that means law enforcement."
One of our newcomers made her presence felt, the elf woman from the cathedral, shaking as she spoke, "I'm Layala. What about my brother?"
Tom... "I don't know. I don't what happens to those who die in the game. Maybe they wake up, maybe they're just comatose in a hospital somewhere, or maybe they're gone."
I let it sink in for everyone. Layala's eyes fell to the table as she slowly wept. I hate this, but sugarcoating the thing wasn't good for anyone, "All I can work on right now is keeping us all alive. This is a fantasy RPG, so for all I know, there might be another way to get them back, but I don't want to get anyone's hopes up. Anyone who knows someone who didn't respawn, we'll keep a journal of names, to see that they're remembered. We chronicle the dead, and if the opportunity to get them back presents itself, we go all-in on it.
"I know we all have questions... but we can't stay here to answer them all, and I don't have all the answers for you. We need to start moving, and moving now. We've got thirteen people here, our five and the eight we added on. We've got enough people to form a guild when the time comes, so we should start acting like a guild now."
Layala's voice cracked, "I-I nominate Lugh."
I was startled. I've been very game-knowledgeable, but I wasn't the leader type. It was never my role in the group.
"I second the nomination."
Khargol. My head whipped around, "Look, guys, I'm not a leader. I know stuff, that's what I've got. Khargol's the one who leads."
Khargol shook his head, "Not here, not in this game. I'm all good for the tanking, but you're the only one of us who's putting out a plan of attack, and I'm getting more lost by the minute. It sucks dude, and it hurts to admit it to myself, but you're the guy this time."
Nods occurred, and by show of hands, I was almost unanimously elected to command the 'guild', minus my own dissenting vote. Well.... crapbaskets, "Alright, fine. I won't argue it, but we've gotta get a move on. Get the starter quests going, and when we unlock the job change system, we'll work things out from there. Until then, we'll break into three parties, two four-man parties, and one five-man. Khargol, you're in charge of the five-man, Temur and myself are the other party leaders for now. We'll meet at the barracks come sundown. We spread out the neos amongst the three parties so they're all protected, and we get started. Don't do any combat quests alone."
I picked up Shelera for my party's neo, along with Chrysta and Layala, and the parties agreed to meet up in front of the barracks around sunset so we could join up together. We fought the press of bodies in the tavern to get out into the streets, and headed off for our quests. I could feel my heart racing a bit, the whole thing feeling like some sort of bad dream, but we would need a minute to get things together, "Okay, let's check everyone's quest logs. Any shareable quests, share them with the group so we can all help out and get rewards. We tackle them from lowest to highest."
We moved through the streets to the first quest, running messages around the city for the heralds. The quest was designed to get new players oriented with the larger city of Farrelston and what factions existed within it. The vast majority of players though, were barely moving, either pressed into the tavern or milling about in front of the cathedral. This was a huge problem, and we were finding clusters of people around, hiding and trying to just deal with the enormity of it all. We were running messages to guards, merchants, and nobles on what was a very low-key questline while watching people crying or raging. Shelera moved up next to me, close to tears herself, "We can't do anything?"
a I halted, and looked around again, and noticed some people who weren't in groups. Solo players who had come in by themselves, the same as you'd see in any MMO, and now they were cut off from the world, friends, family, and no party. Solo players really only existed in MMOs, people who would just fill in the gaps, and otherwise keep to themselves, and it worked in the world of video games. In the real world, though, it wasn't good, "We can do a little."
I jogged over to where a powerfully built Dracon with a sword and shield was balled up on the ground, weeping, purple-scaled head buried in his arms. I knelt down next to him, laying a hand on his shoulder, "Hey, what's your character name?"
The Dracon boy looked up imploringly, his voice quavering, "Umbaar..."
"Hi, Umbaar. I'm Lugh, and these are my friends. Why don't you come with us? You can join our party," I kept my tone even by pleasant.
He nodded sheepishly and accepted the party invite, "My mom's gonna kill me. I wasn't even supposed to be playing the game."
Oh God, no, "How old are you, Umbaar?"
"I'll be fourteen in December."
Due to the nature of the game, the minimum age for Valorian Saga was eighteen. He'd likely gotten access to the rig, and just jumped on, and now he was trapped, "I'm sure right now, your mom's just worried about you, but we'll keep you safe. Come on, we've got quests to do."
The absurdity of our questing was fully growing with each step we took. After running messages, we helped the watch with investigating some local crimes to learn the search system, worked with merchants on trading to get the economy down, and along the way, we found some more solos to fill us out to the party cap of eight. The jobs were immaterial to me, but Shelera and Layala both found comfort in picking up more people, with the latter taking over care of Umbaar. NPCs went about their day's work, and I started to catch on to something, "Hey... is this day... running long to anyone else?"
Games don't use full twenty-four-hour days, using a shorter day and night cycle to give the impression of a world without having to artificially inflate the game to make it feel like a full day. Valorian Saga had, in the videos, been shown to have a twenty-minute day, and twenty-minute night, but as we ran around, it had been far more than twenty minutes now. The sun had barely moved in the sky, which given the rest of the game's level of detail wasn't something they would've ignored. Chrysta spoke up after counting her clock, "Uh... well dearheart, I do believe we've got us a twenty-four cycle now."
There were several possibilities to this, perhaps either our minds changed gear to work with in-game time, or the game had altered to have twenty-four-hour time. Either way, we had no answers for it. I was getting a bit sick of having more and more questions I couldn't answer, but I couldn't focus on it in the here and now. I called a halt, and we found a small corner tavern to get food and drink. I took some time with the menu system, and up popped the character status window.
By statistics, we were moving up a bit, but the main stats of our jobs weren't changing very much at all. My basic stats for movement had risen, but not by much, and the gain was tapering off. That was probably from all the walking around the city we were doing. Reputations were going up in the city guilds attached to our quests, but again, they were minor improvements, and the effective XP was tapering off from doing them. I took out my character journal, a system conceit by the devs that the game world was simply too grand in scale to not allow a lot of notetaking, and did stat-math just like when I would spreadsheet my builds at home. From what I could see, the game had no true 'leveling' system. Instead, skills and attributes were built up by how you played, sort of like in Skyrim, but the same actions would not keep getting you the same degree of XP. A common enough point, or else someone could pull a South Park and just merc wolves until they hit the cap. Abilities would unlock as your stats rose, some coming online automatically like Sprint, while others you had to find a trainer for, such as the Double Knock ability for archers. From what I'd seen online, the abilities would unlock advanced jobs, and certain combinations would unlock hybrid jobs, so a Paladin would be a combination of a knight and acolyte. None of the testers had gotten that far, however, they'd just seen the possibility of it.
I noticed Shelera leaning over to look at my journal, and I smiled, "Just doing nerd stuff, plotting my progression to figure out what jobs I need."
She smiled back, "That seems weirdly normal. What are you thinking of doing?"
"Well, for now, I need to move up my abilities as a Hunter, right? Hunter eventually leads to a few choices, so I'm thinking I'll probably go for a Ranger build. That means I can train up Yndress here as a battle companion."
Yndress had been flying about with me, and sometimes resting on my shoulder, and now, she was curled up by my arm on the table as I continued. Shelera reached over and petted Yndress, "That is so cool. She's so warm. I totally should've figured out a way to get the limited edition... so what should I be leveling up?"
"Well, you're a vagabond, so you might look at something like Bounty Hunter since we're working with the militia. Combine that with another job.... huh."
"What?"
Daeva grinned, "Oh, sweetie, he just worked somethin' out. What do you need, Lugh?"
"Give me a minute. I need to go to the scrivener," I shot up and stepped out of the tavern.
It wasn't far to the scrivener where I could buy the supplies I needed. We'd just done an ink delivery there, and now, I would need paper and ink to work with. Returning, I cleared off the tavern table and laid out a large scroll used for maps, currently unmarked, "Okay, I need everyone to bring up your character pages and stand where I can read them."
Gamers generally do have a sense of when someone's worked out an exploit, and this was one of those times. They brought up their screens so I could start marking down abilities, attributes, and skills. Of note, my Scibing ability was ticking slowly upward as I laid things out. Scribing could turn into runic writing and other more arcane and mundane pursuits. What I was working on became a skill tree system, with the various jobs being grouped together. I had to move things around, and in real life I wouldn't be able to do that with ink, but in the game sense, it was pretty simple. I kept moving around my drawing, finally starting to come into a workable initial system of abilities, jobs, and other things that built off of one another. It look a bit mad, like if no one had stopped the devs on Path of Exile's skill tree, but it was there, "We're thinking about this wrong. We need to get to the barracks. I don't want to explain this twice."
Banded back up, I stopped by our newest unlock: Carriage Stations. The city was entirely too big to be running around it all the time, and for just half a silver, we could go to any other ward in the city. I signaled the coachman, handing him my flyer, "Take us to the militia barracks."
The coachman nodded sharply, "Right you are, sir."
The coaches held four, so we split between the two, and I rechecked my numbers. I was pretty certain I was right by the math, but these things didn't always pan out like you wanted, so it was best to recheck. It still seemed to be working out like I thought, but I needed Temur for a blind study of it. We got out at the barracks, a building made up of fortified walls and barred windows with internal shutters. Militiamen NPCs were standing guard out front, while we could just see some working in the training yard to the side. From what I could see, however, we were the only players here.
Temur's party arrived first, and apparently, I wasn't the only one picking up strays as two carriages emptied of people. He was running a full party as well now, and grinning in his uniquely Temur way, even if he did have draconic features now, "So, I see we're all taking in the lost little lambs?"
"I mean, sure, why not? That's how we met, so why not do it here, too?"
He nodded, "Questing went well, if a bit hum-drum, but you have a look in your eyes that says you've worked something out. You got math time!"
I nodded, "Waiting for... yeah, Khargol went off-road, I see."
Temur and I had shown up with two carriages each, only for Khargol to pull up with four, all packed. That put our new numbers at thirty-two players as he practically bounced up to us, "What?!"
We both shook our heads, "Nothing, man. Never change. I've got some news for everyone."
The full mass moved over to the side of the building so we weren't obstructing the entrance, "Party people, I worked something out at lunch."
I rolled out my map of the skills tree, "Okay, so I was going over my character screen, and did some math. I know what we need to do: We need to move up on every job."
Khargol shook his head, "Isn't that gonna leave us as jacks of all trades? We'd be running pretty average."
I gestured with my hands a bit in dismissal, "Usually, you're right, but here, it's different. The stats aren't really separated here, they're intended for cross-classing, and it's not just the combat jobs. I moved up a bit at Scribing here, and it looks like it'll be the same for crafting and gathering jobs. Move up in X, Y, and/or Z jobs and you unlock a hybrid. So like, say you move up as a blacksmith, armorer, and weaponsmith. All three have abilities building into one another, and that can unlock further abilities, other jobs, a whole classification of things we can't see yet.
"Using abilities works up the stats associated with that ability, and the higher the ability, the more XP it generates for the stats. Those stats still stay there when you do a job change, so you could be a Gladiator working up strength by working the forge."
Shelera looked over the drawing, "Okay, so you think if we take every job up, then that'll make us a lot stronger? But won't we end up with a bunch of usless stats?"
I shook my head, "No, for two primary reasons. For one, what if instead of Paladin, you went something like a Hexblade in D&D terms? Or, Shelera, you take Bounty Hunter, then build up your hunter job to Scout, and you have something akin to a Justicar class? Or Khargol, what if you master every weapon group?"
Temur's interest was peaked at mention of Hexblade, "And what is the second reason?"
I sucked in a breath, "It's a job change system. There's a job change skill, and every basic skill I've seen has upgrades, even if I can't see the end of the trees yet. The adaptive AI is going to adapt to our individual tactics, but even if all of us were playing hunters, we'd all approach hunting differently, maybe more reliant on archery, or snares, or pets. It would force the AI to keep readapting its own tactics on the fly. If we build up, we might just be able to get to something better than the sum of our parts."
Karghol nodded, "And that makes it doubly important we get going on the militia stuff. Shall we?"
The lot of us went over to the barracks, where a guard greeted us at the door, "Hold, citizens. What is your business with the thirteenth Valorian militia?"
I stepped forward, "We're here to enlist for service."
The guard perked right up, "Ah, good. Greetings and well met! I am Sergeant-at-Arms Brant. We are in need of stalwart folk to help protect Farrelston and wider Valoria in these trying times. Dark things are afoot both at home and afar, and it speaks well of you that you would choose service. Please, enter the hall, and register yourselves with Yeoman Granger. Welcome once again, may the purple dragon fly eternal!"

2024.06.09 08:09 Whole_Poetry_9552 My wife is mad I don’t support her degree ambitions that requires moving

So we’ve been married for 6 years with 2 kids. I’ve been working full time 50+ hours so she can work 25 or less and spend time with the kids. Eventually I got tired of missing out on things and took a new career path to be home more. No difference in take home pay thankfully, as I negotiated well.
My wife has wanted to pursue a marine biology degree. We live in the Midwest. Recently, I decided to finish my degree (one class left) towards my current career. My wife wants to switch careers completely, which is fine, but wants to pursue marine biology, which would require us to move across the country if she pursued that after she graduated. She says I’m a hypocrite for taking my class for a degree, while I don’t support her for starting a brand new degree from scratch .
Financially, this cost us $800 for me to finish. She would have to start college over since it’s been so long since she was in school. We’re talking 10’s of thousands obviously.
I told her I wanted to know how the return on investment would go. The median income for that career path is what she makes currently, and moving to another state (all our family is here and we would know no one in destination career areas) would increase the cost of living dramatically. I asked her for a college plan, cost of credits/degree, anything that would transfer to her college choice, what the market is like for said degree, etc, and I’m met with ‘you just don’t care about me’.
I’m currently working 2 jobs plus school. 60 hours on the job plus 2 nights studying for school. She’s refusing to work more than 25 hours still (3 days a week), while I’m making over double her income and killing myself just to keep our bills paid and not take out loans.
I’ve told her I’m getting this degree to eliminate my glass ceiling and increase my income. While I know she wants to do something she’s passionate about, we’ll be taking on a ton of debt and zero financial benefits, while having to pay an insane amount to move cross country and have increased cost of living for being in a coast.
Am I screwed with my way of thinking? I told her I want her to get a degree she’s happy with, but she acts like my asking for a demand in jobs associated with a potential degree is a sin to ask. We have a house, we have kids, everyone we know is here, and this seems to just be a bad decision economically.
How can you help me see her side or try and convince her to look for a more financially responsible option? Just please…help.
Thanks for reading, all.
