2024.05.02 06:41 Puny-human113 Can’t find a book that grabs me

Hey guys! I used to read a lot and fell off in recent years. These days a book has to really suck me in to finish it. Have tried to read some classics recently and could not finish any of them. I did just read I’m Glad My Mom Died by Jeannette Mccurdy and loved that. When I was younger I read and liked lots of books by authors such as Chuck Palahniuk and Kurt Vonnegut. Mostly I like reading books for a specific feeling so it’s hard to describe what I’m really looking for.

2024.04.29 18:10 OppositeSpare2088 unpopular opinion

this may be an unpopular opinion this is just my personal opinion what good came from dance moms??? nothing imo it was just a way for the moms to exploit their daughters for money while getting yelled at by a big fat lady aka abby lee miller. i never really got into the show i’ve seen clips and none of these girls look happy.
the show exploited young girls had them working constantly being berated and harassed. the moms disgust me bc they cared more about the money and fame than their kids privacy they clearly were living vicariously through their daughters.
all of these shows like dance moms, the teen mom franchise, 19 kids and counting, are just like family channels and tik toks where moms are exploiting their kids like jacquline wren eleanor’s mom is.
all of these platforms have one thing in common and that’s the exploitation of children. if you look at people like jeannette mccurdy who resented her mother for exploiting her at a young age and everything she had to go through as well as bunch other nickelodeon kids they were all exploited and groomed by creeps.
what are your guys thoughts on this????

2024.04.15 12:45 AndrewClemmens The only A I ever got thanks to my family... Also PSA about ACE scores

I shared my story here once in a different account and I'll save you the gory details but it was bad. Today, I was reflecting on trauma, and I revisited this site which tells you what your ace score is.
https://www.npr.org/sections/health-shots/2015/03/02/387007941/take-the-ace-quiz-and-learn-what-it-does-and-doesnt-mean
If you score 3 or higher, it is very likely for your childhood to affect you physically and mentally as an adult. "As your ACE score increases, so does the risk of disease, social and emotional problems. With an ACE score of 4 or more, things start getting serious. The likelihood of chronic pulmonary lung disease increases 390 percent; hepatitis, 240 percent; depression 460 percent; attempted suicide, 1,220 percent." Oh, and once your score is like 6 or higher apparently your life span can also be decreased by years due to toxic stress.
My ace score was 6. Which is literally 95% higher than all Americans! WOW, an A! you're telling me I had emotionally immature abusive parents who demanded nothing less than perfection, and all I get is a top percentile ACE score, CPTSD, and therapy fees for the rest of my life.
I cut them off from my life. It had literally been my dream since I was 11 (even Jeannette McCurdy didn't come to the realization her mom was batshit until adulthood,) and since then I've been living the life of my dreams! I had health issues as a kid because they medically neglected me, but I now I actually see the doctor for my shit and I'm healthier at 30 than I ever was as a minor. My sister is still in contact w/them and dealing with some stuff like chronic pain and depression but we've both done pretty well and not turned into narcissistic assholes considering who "raised" us.
Jokes aside, I hope everyone that's on here - do what you need to do to be free if your family is abusive but please keep your health in mind. Trauma can take its toll on your body and soul.
Also note that having a lower score doesn't mean you're not traumatized. It's a warning for those with higher scores, please take care of your health, see a doctor, and prioritize yourself. But know that the rest also doesn't encompass a lot of other traumas like bullying, racism, traumatic accidents, disability etc.
Sending you all love.

2024.04.13 05:34 Straight_Emotion_417 Celebrity birth chart readings that used incorrect data

What do we say about birth chart readings for celebrities that used birth data that turned out to be inaccurate?
For example, there was a great in-depth analysis of Jeannette McCurdy's birth chart on here a few years ago that used an incorrect birth time of 10:36 pm. It was later discovered she was born at 8:18 am.
Another would be the numerous articles on Billie Eilish's birth chart that used a 11:30 am birth time, when it turns out she was actually born at 12:17 pm.

2024.03.29 11:46 cailinbhan Why is everybody pretending that Jerry Trainor is some hero who protected the kids from Dan?

Everybody is saying that he came in on his days off as to not leave Dan alone with the kids, and protected them all from Dan. When asked on a source, they either give none(cause it isn’t true) or say that Jeannette McCurdy said it in her book. As someone who actually read the book, I can tell you that there is no mention of Jerry. This didn’t happen. Jerry Trainor did not come in to work on his off days to protect those kids.
Furthermore, something else people talk about is the video where Jerry ‘shouts’ at Dan to ‘let them go home.’ Everybody talks about this as if Jerry was seriously angry and upset at Dan. But honestly, I don’t see how that video can be construed as anything other than a joke.
I don’t get why people are doing this. I’m not saying Jerry Trainor is a bad person but he was an adult on the ICarly set. I do really like him as a person but It’s harmful to perpetuate narratives like this that just aren’t true. Unfortunately, there isn’t a hero in every story. If anybody should be called ‘a hero’, it would be Alexa Nicols. She spoke out about what was going on long before anyone else, and yet she’s not getting half the love Jerry is for things he never did.
Edit: Guys I don’t hate Jerry Trainor nor am I trying to go after him. He’s not the one perpetuating false narratives or the one creating a horrible working environment, and I dont think I implied that in my post. I think he’s a good guy and I don’t think he’s at fault for anything that happened, nor was he obliged to do anything. What I do have a problem with is the people lying. Making things up, even if they aren’t necessarily harmful.

2024.03.26 23:01 enterpaz Deep Admiration and Relating To Those Who Spoke Up

I admire the filmmakers for making sure people were comfortable and safe while they spoke. And not just talking to famous people, but a crew members and lesser known actors.
I admire everyone who agreed to speak out. Those crew members and actors who risked their jobs. The famous actors using their platforms for change, taking responsibility and making better choices. And everyone who’s bullying and pressuring Hollywood for change and accountability.
I wasn’t a child actor or SA’d but I did face decades of emotional abuse and those who enabled them.
I admire Jeannette McCurdy for being one of the earlier people to speak up and continue to do so. But ALSO, you can tell she did a lot of work on herself over the years and came to more of a peaceful place. She’s also a great writer and genuinely very funny.
I admire Drake Bell for shining a light on severe abuse that men and boys can face, and giving us increased awareness that men need actual protection and support too.
Alexa Nikolas is the one I relate to the most particularly because her bullying experience with a miserable status-obsessed mean girl and an angry, narcissistic man-in-charge is most similar to mine. I remember staying angry and rehashing my problems for years, refusing to see shades of gray in other people who had very different experience and more nuance in their choices, but ultimately targeting my anger in the right place trying to make a better system.
I get why she feels the way she does but think she needs more therapy and has quite a ways to go in her healing but she was also one of the first people to speak out about Dan Schneider and Nickelodeon before the public wanted to hear it and faced backlash for it.
This documentary is helping me look differently at my own experiences and mental health journey.

2024.03.23 18:14 squish7641 josh peck

i wanna start off by saying that i do not hate josh peck nor do i think he’s inherently a bad person - the way everyone is currently treating him is disgusting because he struggles with mental health issues and his childhood wasn’t all peaches and roses either (going by the information in his book)
i simply think josh peck is a bad friend. does anyone remember when jennette mccurdy went on his podcast “Good Guys” with josh’s co-host Ben to promote her book and they ended up scrapping the entire thing because Jennette was uncomfortable with the way she was portrayed in the episode??
and josh talks about in another podcast how because of them scrapping the episode that Jennette “owed them” ?
he tries to reach out to her 6 months later after she went on the podcast and tried to text her and found out he was blocked. he was obviously upset and taken aback by that but he literally made it worse the way he kept continuously talking shit about her
before that though, in 2017 there was another incident where josh didn’t invite drake to his wedding and drake took to twitter with his disappointment from not being invited. drake said “i thought we were brothers?” This blows up and the internet takes drakes side
In response, josh tells the internet that they were never real friends and they cut off contact right after drake & josh ended, which we all know is definitely not true (soo many videos and pictures of them together after their departure from drake & josh)
then josh tells this fake ass sopranos type story about how he sees drake at the VMAs months after the wedding incident and “forced” him to apologize to his wife? he was acting like this realllly big tough guy that made drake into a scared puppy.
Except drakes ex-wife was there with them and the whole night was recorded and her and drake says that never happened…
If you watched the Drake and Janet podcast you would see where Josh treated drake very badly and drake still only had good things to say about him.
my point is, although Josh doesn’t deserve the amount of hate he’s getting, it’s very clear that guy is not a reliable friend and honestly i had a feeling for years that josh always saw drake as beneath him, especially after josh got with the vlog-squad and such (which is a whole other thing bc hes still friends with most of them even though theyre wildly problematic lol)
The thing with Jennette really bothers me to this day because the whole situation with josh was so insanely slimey. I think he had a poor choice of words “we’re good guys we were nice to her! She owes us!” but she literally doesn’t owe you shit? he kept insisting that his experience was very different than Jennette’s (uh no shit for 1 ur a man and shes a woman??) i think he made her very uncomfortable when she was doing his podcast by stomping on her experience working under Dan.
It makes me so mad because Jennette went on Josh’s podcast the day her book was released and she really trusted that he would be sensitive to her opening up about her past. i dont think he ever took accountability which makes me even more mad
what do yall think🤔

2024.02.25 19:06 CarnivorousL I'm Glad My Mom Died by Jeannette McCurdy captures the chaos of childhood trauma, mental illness, and sucking real bad at coping with them.

I love the brutal honesty of McCurdy's prose. I know it's an autobiography, but her style reminded me of the likes of Bojack Horseman and Oyasumi Punpun. Despite the heavy subject matter, the story's dry humor and emotional sincerity keeps things from being too cynical.
Most people focus on the iCarly stuff in the book, but I'll be honest here. Although McCurdy's personal experiences on set are gut-wrenching, I've sadly seen it before with countless child actors. Jeannete McCurdy's deeply problematic relationship with her mother fascinated me the most. It's haunting to see her mom's abuse seep its way into every aspect of her life, long after she was dead and buried.
McCurdy does an uncomfortably great job immersing you into the mind of a scared child. You understood how McCurdy could see her mother as dedicated and loving, despite the crystal-clear abuse she suffered. I even found myself empathizing with the monstrous woman at first, as she clearly had mental health issues of her own on top of the cancer.
However, when McCurdy tosses the rose-tinted glasses soon after, I felt something I hadn't felt in a long time while reading a book: pure disgust at another human being. I'm so happy that McCurdy's in a much better place physically and mentally than she was at the time of the book's original writing.
McCurdy's damn right. I'm glad her mom died.

2024.02.19 23:36 528lover Jessica’s Intentions

Listen, I understand every parent is different. But, if I knew I was going on a TV show that would give me “C-list celebrity” fame as the creepy Matthew put it, I would make sure to privatize or scrub off all the content I made with my very young underage daughter. I feel it’s such a fragile age - 10-14 years old - and it can really shape who you become. Plus, the level of creeps out there nowadays… Getting so much fame so young has hurt most kids far more than helped them. Think about child stars like Jeannette McCurdy or TikTok stars like the D’amelios. I just feel it’s so dangerous out there. It’s hard for a single adult to handle fame, let alone kids.
For all these reasons, I feel Jessica came on the show for mainly fame, and is an irresponsible mother based on the sole fact that she is outwardly putting her daughter out there in her content. I hope her daughter will be okay through the thick of this. She’s so precious.

2024.01.22 06:51 DocWatson42 (Auto)biographies

My lists are always being updated and expanded when new information comes in—what did I miss or am I unaware of (even if the thread predates my membership in Reddit), and what needs correction? Even (especially) if I get a subreddit or date wrong. (Note that, other than the quotation marks, the thread titles are "sic". I only change the quotation marks to match the standard usage (double to single, etc.) when I add my own quotation marks around the threads' titles.)
The lists are in absolute ascending chronological order by the posting date, and if need be the time of the initial post, down to the minute (or second, if required—there are several examples of this). The dates are in DD MMMM YYYY format per personal preference, and times are in US Eastern Time ("ET") since that's how they appear to me, and I'm not going to go to the trouble of converting to another time zone. They are also in twenty-four hour format, as that's what I prefer, and it saves the trouble and confusion of a.m. and p.m. Where the same user posts the same request to different subreddits, I note the user's name in order to indicate that I am aware of the duplication.
Thread lengths: longish (50–99 posts)/long (100–199 posts)/very long (200–299 posts)/extremely long (300–399 posts)/huge (400+ posts) (though not all threads are this strictly classified, especially ones before mid?-2023, though I am updating shorter lists as I repost them); they are in lower case to prevent their confusion with the name "Long" and are the first notation after a thread's information.

2024.01.08 03:54 salsalunchbox Which audiobook memoir should I listen to next?

Hello all,
I've fallen back into reading, hard. So much so that I now usually read two books at the same time - a physical copy and an audiobook for times when I need to be doing something else like driving, running, chores, or working out at the gym. I prefer memoirs for audiobooks, I'm not sure why but it holds my attention better than my usual genre preferences for physical mediums. My recent listens were:
I'm Glad My Mom Died - Jeannette McCurdy ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Taste: My Life Through Food - Stanley Tucci ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
The Woman in Me - Britney Spears ⭐⭐⭐
I am leaning towards Kitchen Confidential (Anthony Bourdain), Friends, Lovers, and the Big Terrible Thing (Matthew Perry), Bossypants (Tina Fey), or Spare (Prince Harry) but wanted to get either outside suggestions or input from those that read these titles before. Thank you!!

2024.01.03 23:31 finallyinfinite The Jeannette McCurdy Section

As I’ve been working through the Jeannette McCurdy section of the Sam & Cat video, I’ve been so incredibly impressed with the way Quinton has been handling this topic.
His introduction showed that he really has put a lot of thought and care into the way he presents her story, and I think he achieved what he set out to in connecting her story to the overall miniseries in a meaningful way.
I bought her book when it first released and read it within a day or two. Quinton’s analysis is definitely no substitute, but I think it makes great supplemental material for fans of her Nickelodeon shows. I don’t blame her for not wanting to reflect to heavily on the details of the behind-the-scenes stuff, because that’s really not what her story is about. She wasn’t and isn’t Sam Puckett; that was just a job and a part of her overall life. But her life is the story.
However, in a discussion about all the nitty gritty of the show, it’s hard not to look at the ways her abuse influenced the show and vice versa. And I think Quinton has done a really thoughtful job at examining that.
I’ve just really admired the depth and respect that has been demonstrated in this analysis. It’s very clear that it’s not gossip session, but a legitimate look into the way this show impacted Jeannette, and how that is an inseparable part of this show’s legacy.
Jeannette’s legacy may not be the abuse she suffered, but it’s certainly part of the NSU’s and The Creator’s.

2024.01.02 13:55 SevenOldLeaves Looking for books about very rich people

I have always had a fascination with the life & lifestyle of the very rich, not much in admiration/envy but more with an almost anthropology angle?
Examples of the vibes I'm looking for:
I have just bought Billionaire Wilderness and can't wait to read it
The photography and documentaries by Lauren Greenfield
Gossip Girl books (yes, I know they're not exactly high literature 😂 but I remember I liked how self aware they were, or at least this is how I remember them)
I am glad my mom died by Jeannette McCurdy - while it's not about the extra wealthy, it has the human rawness that you usually don't see coming from the "backstage" of show biz.
Books where the main character is very rich and are that are not romance.
The genre doesn't really matter, but if non-fiction I prefer the POV to be an outsider looking in more than celebratory/self-celebratory stuff. No Kardashians autobiographies please 😂
I know this is kind of a niche subject, I hope I did a good job explaining what I'm looking for!

2023.12.28 08:51 spoiderdude Are authors allowed to use real names in books?

I don’t normally read non-fiction, but I’m reading Jeannette McCurdy’s “I’m Glad my Mom Died” and I noticed that she uses a lot of names of non-famous people whether it’s talking about them or their families.
If you say something negative or say something they don’t like, can’t they sue you for defamation? Maybe this is more of a legal question.
But yeah do authors normally make up fake names if they’re doing an autobiography and probably didn’t ask those people permission to talk about them?
Edit: I now understand the difference between a memoir and autobiography.
Edit 2: Shit, I just finished the book and got that horrible feeling you get when it’s over. Now I remember why I stopped reading.

2023.11.26 11:54 TimLuf1 Recommendation for Christmas Present

Hi all, just posting as I'm looking at getting a book for my girlfriend for Christmas and I'm not sure what to get. Last year I got her "I'm Glad My Mom Died", the autobiography by Jeannette McCurdy and she really enjoyed it, would anyone know of any autobiographies that are in a similar vein and for a similar target audience (she's a woman in her twenties who is very in to celebrity culture)?
On the fiction side, one of her favourite authors is Liane Moriarity and I also know that she enjoys Matt Haig's books. Anything that comes to mind would be appreciated!
