2010.08.01 16:49 1point618 Written Speculative Fiction in all its forms.

**A place to discuss published speculative fiction**—novels, short stories, comics, and more. Not sure if a book counts? Then post it! Science Fiction, Fantasy, Alt. History, Postmodern Lit., and more are all welcome here. **The key is that it be speculative, not that it fit some arbitrary genre guidelines**. Any sort of link or text post is welcome as long as it is about printed / text / static SF material.

2016.06.16 21:53 Shinies, but in real life!

The term "shiny" originates from Pokémon. It is a term used to describe a pokémon that is a completely different color from all others in their species. We have taken that idea and expanded it to include objects, plants, food, and people! All color morphs are accepted providing they are atypical from the norm of that species, breed, or type.

2024.05.22 01:50 Federal-Attempt-2469 Cool public domain artwork to get made into a print?

Hello fellow NYC bitches! I am looking to fill my apartment up with art. I know the MET museum has over 50,000 pieces of art that are now in the public domain, and so does the Art Institute of Chicago, etc.
Anyone have any recommendations for art in the public domain to turn into a print? I really like bright colors, things that feel contemporary and fresh, surrealism, a Rubenesque nude…anyone have any art recommendations?
And also, does anyone have any recommendations for where to get this printed?

Help identify this track and the animal I saw?
I was driving down a one lane road in Southern California Coastal Mountains. I came across a smallish (corgi sized) black and grey animal. I stopped to look. Not a coyote, wrong color.
At first I thought it was a dog but it had a grey scruffy, lion’s mane around it neck. I found this paw print in the dirt nearby. Now I’m thinking, maybe it was a wolf pup? I don’t think we’re supposed to have wolves in SoCal?
Any thoughts?
The watch measures 4inches.

2024.05.22 01:14 Pandita_babe How do I make this more efficient?

How do I make this more efficient?
Recently started a new job I am well suited for and have plenty of experience but don't have a superior able to provide more specific guidance on their actual designing process. They outsourced the design part but utilize the run files and such for print. (There is minimal knowledge on illustrator from my supervisor)(I guess she may be my peer I am unsure but she is training me) Idk. I feel confident like they seem impressed but surly there is a better way to add color to and engineere drawings of vehicles.
My tow options so far have been -
Photoshop - a mix of tools primarily the paint bucket. Some creative selecting with the magic wand tool. Some masks. Some paintbrush.
Illustrator - it's imported as lines. Mostly non connecting. I copy the layer lock the lines on top. Select the bottom layer I convert those lines to shapes weld and shape builder tool the sections of background color.
This picture is pretty much what they look like. Perhaps the drawings are sloppy? But maybe they are creating so many and it needs to be really fast turnaround?
Any advice is welcome.

2024.05.22 01:13 badjoke69 Funny First Murder Case

Funny First Murder Case
So I started a fresh playthrough to help me get over the blues of finishing another game and the very first murder case was a very interesting one. I dropped whatever case I was working on and went to the scene to witness the police was shooting someone who I assumed was probably their spouse. Police leaves once the spouse gets knocked down but then goes wake her up again which starts the cycle that made investigating pretty much impossible until I knocked the cop out.
Spouse wakes up then starts pacing back and forth the crime scene which was strange behavior since she didn't even give chase when she spots me and continues her routine of pacing back and forth. I assumed it was a bug so I continued the investigation anyway. It was a Ritual Reaper upon inspection so I was expecting a cypher or other calling cards but I couldn't find anything. Looked for prints but only the prints of the spouse and the victim was the only thing I found.
I was about to leave and start asking people around but thought to give the room one more thorough scan and that's when it hit me. On the corner of the room where the spouse was pacing around in was a crumpled paper with the cypher I was looking for and when I scanned it I was in disbelief. THE PAPER HAD THE PRINTS OF THE SPOUSE ALL OVER. The bugged spouse was the killer I was looking for all this time.
Now from what I observed in my previous playthrough through save scumming to learn more about the game and how killers behave I found out after the murder the killer leaves a calling card and open all sorts of drawers to leave prints then wander the streets for a while then head home. Also in a previous playthrough, the spouse of the victims usually get evicted and just wander the streets for the rest of the playthrough. I am no programmer but seeing how the killer lived together with their victim, I like to believe something bugged that left her on an eternal loop of leaving the calling card and opening a drawer, supposedly getting evicted and wandering the streets, and cleaning their house of mess that previously wasn't there.
The custom colors are player made connections and automatic connections are left in red to help me organize

2024.05.22 00:55 AraNeaLux [Offer] Bootleg I Spy [USA to WW]

Hi! I am back with my Pantone cards and thermal printer, and ready to make another offer. I moved last week, and in an effort to go out and get to know the town, I'm making an offer as follows:
Comment with an adjective (or a few), and I'll try to find something which matches! Ex: if you comment bright and airy, I might take a picture of a tree or flower. Said picture will be printed and stuck onto a Pantone postcard to be sent to you. (Note: the thermal printer is black and white, so while I welcome color adjectives you will have to take my word for it :P )

2024.05.22 00:51 KFIjim Customer obsessing about grain and color variation

After many samples and conversations, my customer chose stained cherry cabinets. I gave my usual warning that if you're going with natural wood, especially cherry, you have to understand there will be variations in grain and color. She seemed like she understood all that at the time we contracted. Fast forward to today - I got about half the cabinets installed and they look fantastic. She peeks in and is quiet. Never a good sign.
Finally she says, 'they're so much darker than the sample'. The lighting in the room sucks and shes holding this sample up to the base cabinets in a dark corner. "and this door has so much more grain in it". Oh for fuck's sake - I distinctly remember talking to her about wood grades and gave the same spiel I give everyone - " We could spec "select" if you want to minimize any variation, but that comes at a cost. "natural' is less expensive but may have some sapwood streaks which a lot of people don't like - I think a good compromise on cost/appearance is natural no-sap so you'll get some grain and shade variation but avoid the white streaks of sapwood."
The contract explicitly states that grain and color variation are natural and not considered defects, but you hate to go pointing to the fine print in the contract. I'm just wondering what I'll walk into tomorrow - whether she'll make her peace that these are beautiful cabinets or whether she's gong to obsess about the individual wood grain on each door.
I thought I was pretty good and catching these folks early, apparently I'm not. Anyone else been down this road?

2024.05.22 00:31 natural-death For you.

I love your big cheeks when you smile. You always wanted to get braces, but I love your teeth the way they are.
I love your soft heart. I’d always admire how you cry. I’m sorry I made you cry so much sometimes. I’m too much like my parents.
I love that you always want to grow and how you can look forward. I’m so proud of you. I’m so grateful I was there to see you get your degree, to see you move out, to be part of your life.
I love that you love yellow and sunflowers and the sky. You were always so bright. I also don’t like it now too, because whenever I see something happy, I think of you, and it makes me really sad. Being happy makes me sad.
If art was for me, music was for you. I miss hearing you hum and sing. You’re a great singer. I can’t listen to soft songs anymore.
I loved giving you my last bite every time. Sitting across from you made me happy. It was always enough for me to just be with you. I didn’t need any gifts or flowers or letters, but I got those too anyway.
Sometimes you’d slap your big belly, and I’d slap it too. I liked that. Do you remember when I’d cuff your sleeves before work? Or run to get your hairbrush one more time? How you’d scare me through the window while I washed the dishes? How I’d hug you at the door when you came home? Scrubbing your back in the shower? Waking you up just so I could remind you that I love you? I miss calling you over so you could just lay on top of me. When we rolled on the floor after moving into your new apartment.
My friends and family say I idealize you too much. But I don’t think so. I did the cliche thing, the important healing step, where I made a list of all the pet peeves and transgressions. But it didn’t feel right, hating you or villainizing you. You had your flaws, your quirks and those were fine with me. It just reminded me you were human. The weird way you sleep, how’d you get a little too angry at video games, how you’d be too anxious to go out sometimes. I love the human you.
Sometimes I wish you were horrible to me, to make this easier. Everyone else I talk to had horrible exes, mean ones. When I listen to their stories, it’s not you I think about. It’s me, maybe. Maybe that’s what I am to you.
I went to Chickfila and Cheesecake Factory on my own to try and replace our memories. I took myself to brunch and looked at the colors of the floor, the ceilings and the letters hanging on the wall to stay grounded. I browsed the shelves of the Korean Mart where I’d buy you snacks and looked at the chocolate bar selection at Aldi’s. I went to an arcade with new strangers I met and tried to win myself my own prize.
My therapist asked me to recall a happy memory, a content one. I told her about how I drove your car over the Golden Gate Bridge. We stopped at the viewing vista over the San Francisco Bay, and I kissed you on the cheek as I took a picture. It was my favorite picture of us, I had it printed so many times and pinned to my wall. In that memory, I felt safe, I felt warm, I felt content, I felt loved.
I hate how you said I never loved you, how I am unable to love. What is this feeling then? And where does this pain come from, if not my shattered heart?
Because I love you, I’m supposed to let you go. Be happy for you and send you off with love. But you’re not here anyway, so I hope it’s okay if I hold on for a little while longer. Write you a letter, or two, and look for you in every song lyric and in every flower by the street. Think of you as the clouds pass by and feel you in my chest when I find a laugh.

2024.05.22 00:01 HRJafael 48 Mohawk Trail Regional School students become published authors in writing contest

https://archive.is/W1Tfd
Leanne Blaszak, a seventh grade English language arts teacher at Mohawk Trail Regional School, offered students in her classes the opportunity to become published authors. But there was a requirement. Each story could only be 100 words long.
By taking part in the Young Writers competition, Mohawk Trail middle schoolers were tasked with writing “speculative fiction” stories that take place in our world, but feature magical, supernatural, futuristic or other twists.
The exercise — and competition — is designed to allow students to write about what inspires them while focusing on the act of writing and carefully considering their word choice. The Peabody-based organization provided materials to help educators lead their students through the process of starting with an idea to submitting a finished piece.
“Encouraging young people to experiment with language in creative and challenging ways empowers them to trust their ideas, their skills and their ability to tackle something new,” Blaszak said in a statement.
The contest theme was “The Glitch,” in which students had to imagine a story that involved a change that has world-altering consequences. Writers used a graphic organizer to help map out the ideas and elements to their story. First steps included considering prompts, defining their characters and choosing a setting. Next came the creation of the big details of the beginning, middle and end. Fleshing it out and refining were the final steps.
Submitted in late February, some titles of completed 100-word works include “The Last One To See Color,” “The Forgetting,” “What We Thought Was The End,” “The Dark Box,” “The Subliminal Space,” “The Multi-Pocket Parallel Catastrophe” and “Portraits.”
Each of the writers received a bookmark commemorating the experience. Those who were chosen to have their stories published also received a certificate of merit. “The Glitch — Stories of Imagination” is set to be published on July 31. As a participating school, Mohawk Trail will receive a complimentary copy of the book, allowing all 48 featured students the chance to see their work in print.

2024.05.21 23:20 JHart_Modelworks A lil WIP

A lil WIP
Just a few work on progress shots on the latest build. Revell's 69 Mustang Super Cobra Jet with the C1-Models RTR-X widebody kit, hood is 3D printed from Pixel3D's 69 mustang body kit on Cults3D.
3 coats of Mr. Surfacer 1500 black primer, 3 coats of House of Kolor Galaxy gray base from scale finishes, 5 coats of HoK burgundy candy, and then the stripes are scale finishes toyota asphalt gray metallic (the color of my gt86).
For the mustang script in back i used some vallejo model air silver. I dipped the eraser from my trusty mechanical pencil into the paint, tapped the excess off on a paper towel, and then essentially rubber stamped each letter and cleaned away any stray bits with a wet cotton bud.
Need to get the bare metal foil done and she'll be ready for 2K clear.

2024.05.21 23:08 schwanksta Tiny boat on a big sea

Tiny boat on a big sea
I wanted to experiment with a big bold color print with a small detail, and this is what I came up with. The print is 8x10 on a slightly larger sheet of Hosho. It is the biggest I’ve printed yet and I really like doing a larger print, even though it did not involve much carving.
For the first few, I was getting splotchy ink transfer (they’re in the order of how I printed them), which I can’t tell if I like more than the really good coverage on the final greenish blue one. I also think I like some of the bluer colors better than the green-blue, though my husband disagrees. It’s perhaps obvious since color is the major thing here but it’s interesting how much the color affects the mood of the piece.
I might try to get some cleaner lines on the boat shape itself and then try printing in a more blue color like the first two with better ink coverage. But does anyone have any suggestions / thoughts / critique? I’ve thought about maybe printing on top of one with a very light ink of a slightly different blue to see if it a little rippled sea-like effect but I’m not sure how it would work, and I sort of like the calm waters idea.

2024.05.21 23:00 SnooGiraffes4413 printing with 250 gsm matte paper on my canon g2010

I’m trying to print with 250gsm matte paper on my canon G2010 printer. The retailer said it should be able to handle printing with no problem. When I try printing on the paper though the quality doesn’t end up looking good at all. There’s a lot of bleeding and the colors don’t look accurate to the picture. When I change the printing preferences it does yield different results but the quality is still not how I hope it would turn out.
Does anyone know how I can get higher quality prints? Pictures for reference.

I need help with my uv maps
Hello, I need help with my model. I want to export the base color map so that the UVs of the model are arranged on a workspace to print and cut them out for a costume (as seen in image 1). However, it exports like this (attached image 2). Does anyone know how I can export it in a more organized manner? Thank you very much!

2024.05.21 21:56 Silverwisp7 [TOMT][Artwork][Older than 20 yrs] An Art Print of a Woman with a Candle and a Veil of Beads?

Hello everyone! My lovely, lovely boyfriend took me to an antique store and was super excited to purchase a picture he had been eyeing ever since he was a kid, only to find that it had been sold. He doesn't remember the name of the piece or the artist, but he had Google Lensed it before and knows it is an established piece and not a random person's homemade art.
From what he remembers, the print depicts a woman with shorter, darker hair with a solemn expression. Although it reminded him of Joan of Arc, he does not think it actually depicts a saint, but her posture is saintly. She may be holding a candle, he can't be sure, but he knows her body (which is facing forward) is illuminated and stands apart from the background, which is a simple dark or near-black color. He also remembers that she is wearing some sort of headpiece with pearls or beads on it, almost like a 1920s beaded headdress. He thinks the beads/pearls might extend past the woman and cascade into the background, but he's not sure.
This illustration has been in the store since he was a kid, so it can't be more recent than 20 years. He doesn't think it's a painting, but a print, something like art nouveau posters but without the nature-themed flourishes or intricacies.
I want to get him this print, or at least a title or artist name. I've spent the entire day scouring databases and Pinterest and chatting up AI, but I haven't found anything. I would appreciate any and all contributions! Thank you so much!

2024.05.21 21:51 BrnFish245 An open letter to the advisory board and instructors at the Global Center for Religious Research (GCRR)

To the Board of Directors, Advisory Board, and Instructors at the Global Center for Religious Research:
When I first came across an advertisement for the Global Center for Religious Research’s courses, I got excited, especially because the instructors weren’t all old white guys like me. I wanted to get a broad range of experiences. I intended not only to sign up for the courses, but to see whether or not I might be able to offer courses through GCRR in the future. I pictured a future in which I would have a whole new set of colleagues who, like me, treat clients who have experienced religious trauma.
Before buying anything, I decided to join the “Religious Trauma Studies” Facebook group that GCRR is running. It took me less than an hour to become very concerned about the behavior of GCRR and its leader, Darren Slade.
While GCRR’s advertisements give the impression of professionalism and research, Slade himself is traumatizing and even harassing his/your own customers. Do you not see it? Best case scenario: he’ll keep embarrassing you. Worst case scenario: someone (especially if you ever have employees) is going to sue you. If he publicly treats his customers with this much contempt, how will he treat his employees, if he ever gets this business off the ground?
To illustrate, I am attaching several documents printed (customer names redacted) from the GCRR’s “Religious Trauma Studies” Facebook group. It’s messy, but you can go look up the Facebook group and find the originals.
If you’re a therapist, do you not see how much credibility you lose by associating yourself with an organization that mocks your own therapy clients for being triggered and having feelings? And Slade's approach isn't just annoying or unprofessional, it’s aggressive. Surely you can see what I’m talking about? Why are you supporting this guy?
At one point in the attached document (while accusing a woman of being sexist against him for saying he's being sexist), Slade even claims that men are constantly discriminated against just for speaking, and that "oppression and marginalization cut both ways". (About 1/3 of the way down page 3). You are all experts in religious trauma, and I first became interested in GCRR's courses because I saw some women and people of color among the instructors and advisors. Do you, as a group, actually believe that "oppression and marginalization cuts both ways"? Do you believe that racism, sexism, and homophobia oppress and marginalize straight white men just as much as people of color, women, and LGBT people? If so, I'll be warning people away from your whole organization.
Our job is to help people put an end to this kind of abuse, not to perpetuate it. Our job is to help people to recover from their traumas, not inflict more trauma, and certainly not to belittle them for speaking up.
If I had gotten involved without checking out how Slade treats his customers, I'd be embarrassed now, so I'm taking the time to give you the professional heads-up that I would want were I in your shoes.

2024.05.21 21:44 Zak_F03 The Principality’s Diplomatic Passport

The Principality’s Diplomatic Passport
Principality of Zakistan Diplomatic Passport Description
Cover Design: The diplomatic passport of the Principality of Zakistan is distinguished by its deep Bordeaux red color, symbolizing the nation's rich heritage and diplomatic prestige. The front cover is embossed with the national seal of Zakistan in a metallic gold hue. The seal features a majestic olive tree, representing peace and prosperity, encircled by the national motto, "Unity, Honor, Progress," inscribed in the three official languages of Zakistan: Zakistani, English, and French.
Interior Front Page: Upon opening the passport, the interior front page showcases an intricate design of the symbolic olive tree, set against a subtly patterned background that combines elements of traditional Zakistani art and modern aesthetics. This page also contains a unique passport number printed with holographic ink that changes color when viewed from different angles, enhancing security.
Main Photo and Information Page: The main photo page of the passport includes the holder's photograph, personal details, and various high-security features to prevent forgery. Key elements include: - Holographic Overlay: A transparent film embedded with holographic symbols of Zakistan’s national icons, including the olive tree, a dove, and a laurel wreath. - Infrared Ink: Invisible under normal light but visible under infrared light, used for printing the passport holder's name and other sensitive information. - Tactile Laser Engraving: The passport holder’s details are also laser engraved, providing a tactile element that is difficult to replicate. - Microtext: Small, intricate text that is only readable under magnification, featuring excerpts from Zakistan’s constitution and national poems. - Edge Seals: Laser-engraved edge seals on the photo page ensure the integrity of the document and make it evident if any tampering occurs.
Visa Pages: The passport contains numerous visa pages, each featuring a distinct national symbol of Zakistan, showcasing the country’s rich cultural heritage and natural beauty. Pages 12-13 are particularly notable for their depiction of the stunning Oakwood Castle, an iconic historical landmark. The image of Oakwood Castle is printed using a combination of traditional and modern techniques, including: - Watermark: The castle image is integrated into the page as a multi-tone watermark, visible when held up to light. - UV Reactive Ink: Elements of the castle and surrounding landscape glow under UV light, revealing hidden details and enhancing security. - Embossing: The Oakwood Castle is subtly embossed, providing a tactile feel and adding another layer of security. - Intaglio Printing: This technique is used for printing the national symbols on each visa page, giving a rich texture and raised feel to the designs.
Additional Security Features: - Biometric Chip: Embedded within the passport’s back cover, this chip securely stores the holder's biometric data, ensuring swift and accurate identification at border controls. - Rainbow Printing: The gradient technique used in printing makes it difficult to reproduce the pages accurately using conventional methods. - Optical Variable Ink: This ink changes color when viewed from different angles and is used for the national emblem and certain texts within the passport. - Threading: Security threads woven into the pages contain microtext and are visible only under certain light conditions, adding another layer of counterfeit protection.
The Zakistan diplomatic passport is a testament to the nation's commitment to security, heritage, and technological advancement. It not only serves as a travel document but also as a symbol of national pride and identity for Zakistani diplomats and dignitaries worldwide.

2024.05.21 21:41 LooLoo_nonsense Epson ecotank 2803 won’t print color with ink tanks almost full

I bought an epson ecotank 2803, used, and it won’t print color. I’ve done the nozzle cleaning option multiple times, cleaned the print head multiple times and did basically all of the maintenance options except for a power cleaning bc I read that that can seriously drain the ink. So I wanted to make sure there wasn’t something else I could try, before I did that.
I included the second picture bc a lot of the stuff online says to change certain settings and see if the color works, but I have a very limited amount of settings and can’t change much.
I don’t really know what I’m doing.
Does anyone have any suggestions?
