Me and Lila always carved dozens of jack o’ lanterns every October, so they’d absolutely saturate our lawn on Halloween night. It was our thing. But looking back on it, now that I’ve lost her, I just feel bad for the pumpkins. I almost relate to them, somehow. The way they were carved up, had everything of substance inside of them torn out, and left as hollow, rotting shells with forced smiles.
Needless to say, I didn’t cope with her death well. I didn’t want to cope with it. I wanted the world to drown in the black sludge of my grief. I loathed the people I saw going about their lives, unaware that the world had already ended the moment Lila died. The Earth shouldn’t keep spinning. Life shouldn’t go on. Not without her.
Even my relatives bringing me along on a trip to Kauai only made it worse. The most gorgeous place on Earth, and it made me sick with hatred. Nothing that beautiful deserved to exist if Lila wasn’t ever going to get to see it. It wasn’t fair.
I thought I’d never enjoy or care about anything again. Then I discovered media preservation.
It started with taking some of Lila’s old VHS tapes to a video repair place to fix some issues with the footage before it’s digitized. The job fascinated me. In a universe based on entropy, where everything inevitably fades away and is forgotten… restoring something lost is like snatching it from the jaws of death, right? Like flipping the bird to the universe and its so-called ‘natural order’. People die, but information doesn’t have to.
Now, it doesn’t matter how small — be it some god-awful plug-and-play licensed game, or a cereal commercial from 80’s — it’s my mission to recover it in as high a quality as I’m able, and make sure it’s freely available online for as long as possible.
A couple weeks ago, I came across a big haul. Four boxes of old VHS tapes offered up on E-Bay for dirt cheap. Most of the tapes were just recordings of Cheers episodes already preserved in higher qualities, but one Maxell E-240 caught my interest.
First of all, I’d never seen one so melted. Sure, sometimes they were left in an attic too long, and the colors and audio start to degrade. But this one looked like it had survived a house fire. It was covered in soot and the smell of smoke, and had the overall shape of a chocolate bar left out in the sun a little too long.
Second was the label, which read in neat sharpie: ᴇᴘɪꜱᴏᴅᴇ 4,679,329 ᴍᴀʀ 8 2035.
The casing was so disfigured, I had to bust it apart just pull out the tapes and respool them in a fresh cassette. I tried to iron out the creases in the tape as best I could, but I had no illusions about it accomplishing much — the mylar surface had been irreparably warped in places by whatever fire had half-melted the thing.
Imagine my despair at the sight of that dreaded ‘ɴᴏ ꜱɪɢɴᴀʟ’. I could clearly see the tape wasn’t blank, yet no amount of adjusting the tracking or trying different TVs or VCRs accomplished anything. Just as I was about to give up, though, the thing just suddenly started playing properly at the exact instant the clock struck 3 AM, as if it had only now decided to work. My all-nighter had paid off.
I didn’t dwell on the fact that this ‘miracle fix’ had been impossible. If I’d had any sense, I’d have torn the horrid thing out of my VCR and buried it beneath holy ground. Instead, fool I was, I sat down and watched.
At first, the thing seemed unwatchable. The audio was so distorted that the show’s theme song emerged as a low, crackling, staticky wail that made my head throb, and the logo was completely indistinguishable through the flickering and interference. I thought it was a lost cause for a moment. But then a figure appeared and cleared away the static, like Moses parting the Red Sea.
It was the sight of the show’s host that hooked me. He was just… perfect. Perfect in every way. I knew it just looking at him. Infinitely handsome and likable and charismatic, and he always said the exact perfect thing. The only issue is, I don’t remember a single thing about him now, in the same way you can’t remember a dream that seemed so clear to you while you were experiencing it. He just appears in my memory as this abstract blur in a sharp suit. Yet at the time, I was awestruck, even before he said a single word.
I can’t even remember a word he said. It was like he was speaking another language, one I felt as opposed to heard. I’ll try and transcribe it as best I can into words, but know that it’s only a pathetic imitation.
“... for another night of laughs, prizes, and fun for the whole family, with your host, #####!” I noticed that the audio and visual distortion seemed to suddenly intensify the instant he said his name, rendering it completely illegible. Idiot I was, I figured that was a coincidence. “Tonight is a night of celebration, folks, because thanks to the support of loyal viewers like you, we have just been approved for, get this: two hundred thousand more seasons!”
The “live studio audience” went wild with applause. I put that in scare quotes because, as far as I could tell, besides the host, the studio seemed completely empty. As if he was standing on a plain white stage that extended outwards into infinite darkness on all sides.
“For those just joining us, the game here is simple…” He explained that this was some sort of a trivia show. Every time a guest got an answer wrong, it brought them a little closer to some sort of unspecified ‘punishment’. And if they got it right? He smirked. “Well, they get to delay the inevitable.”
I wondered what he meant by ‘inevitable’. I didn’t have to wonder long.
The host gestured to a curtain that hadn’t been there moments ago, which raised to reveal a middle-aged man. You know the type — bushy mustache, gray hair, round-rimmed glasses. Kind of guy you’d have doing your plumbing. He couldn’t look any more out of place stood up and restrained in that — what the hell is that?
I recognized that metal coffin-looking thing from a medieval torture museum I went to once. The iron maiden. The lid hung open, countless long, needle-like blades poking inwards, threaten to poke a million new holes in him if it was shut.
His situation was not lost on him. “Where… where am I? What the hell is this!?”
“Oh, lucky guess!” The host ‘joked’. More canned laughter. “I know you always loved watching those trivia shows, Malcolm? Weren’t you always sitting there, grinding your teeth, seething that it wasn’t fair? That you should be the one up on stage, winning big?”
The man paused. Even he seemed mesmerized by the unreal perfection of the host before him. “I… this is a… game show?”
“All you have to do is answer a few questions! Think you can handle that, Malcolm?” He pulled out a cue card without waiting for an answer. “And our first question! What were you doing the night of February 18th, 1998?”
The man seemed baffled. “Just… sat on my couch watching the NFL, I think? I’m not sure how I’m supposed to remember —“
He let out a startled squeal as a horrid buzzer sounded. On cue, the lid slid a third of the way closed, making him flinch. “Oooh, I’m afraid that’s the wrong answer, Frank! But you know what? I’ll give you one more chance. What were you —“
“Following a girl home!” The man cried out. “F-from the bar. There, are you happy?”
“Cor-rect!” The canned audience began cheering! “Such honesty! Now, our second question: just what were you carrying while you followed her?”
He hesitated for a little too long. And then the buzzer sounded again, and the lid slid so near to closing that its blades began poking uncomfortably against his skin. He tried to press himself against the back of the maiden as well as his restraints would allow. “Jesus! Okay! A knife, a knife!”
“Awww, if only you’d said that just a second earlier!” Another big question. “Our third question: why, Malcolm? Why did you do it?”
That set Malcolm off. He started thrashing, clawing, screaming. “Let me out of this thing, you maniac! You can’t do this to me! Do you know who I am? Is this some sort of sick joke? My lawyers will have your head for this, you—“
And then the buzzer. All of a sudden, the lid slammed shut full-force, and the man was utterly silenced save for an unnatural, drawn-out wheeze. “Another wrong answer, Malcolm! I’m afraid I was looking for: ‘because if I can’t have her, no one can’!”
I admit it. I laughed. Out of shock more than anything. How was this allowed on TV? I took it as some sort of dark comedy show, and it was kind of satisfying to see that freaky character get his comeuppance. Still, there was something unnerving to me, seeing the man’s eyes through the openings in the maiden. Wide and red and terrified. They just looked a little… too real.
But the maiden disappeared as quickly as it came, before I could dwell on it too much. “Oh, envy! Definitely one of my favorite sins.” More laughter. “Stay tuned, folks! We’ve still got a night of fun and games in store for you! But first… how’s about a word from our sponsors?”
Cut to a corporate logo which I again couldn't recognize.
“This segment was made possible by Buer Health, which has recently announced a brilliant new initiative to protect our citizens from skin cancer by removing their skin completely.”
The camera cut to a massive industrial building, resembling a solid concrete cube around 50 meters in width and height. Its surface bore arcane symbols etched using carvings of wailing, tormented faces. The host would occasionally be rendered inaudible by a deafening metallic scraping from within, though he didn’t seem to notice. The only protrusion from the building’s cubic shape was a single smokestack, belching a scarlet red smoke into the atmosphere. A queue of gaunt figures waited at the entrance, herded and coerced by their grim overseers, and there were no words to describe the procession of scarlet ghouls limping out the building’s other end.
“Owing to the nonlinearity of time, the brand new Grand Skinpeeling Machine has spontaneously appeared several years before construction deadlines, and indeed, before it was even conceived of by anyone in our timeline. People have rushed all the way from Malebolge just to try this miracle of technology out on opening day, and so far, the reviews have been stellar!”
He shoved his microphone in the face of a shambling thing that could only scarcely be called a human. Tatters of flesh clung to its exposed musculature, blowing in the wind. Its eyes were the only hint of color in that sea of bloody red, and they were wide, white and terrified. The thing screamed and wailed for as long as it could before the last tendons connecting its jaw to its face snapped, and it was left to choke and gurgle.
“An amazing wail! The results speak for themselves, folks. The Grand Skinpeeling Machine is a hit!”
So far, I was still laughing along and having a good time. The sight of the next ‘guest’, however, started making me nervous.
It was an old lady.
She couldn’t be a day younger than sixty, the sort of sweet elderly woman who in a just world would be cooking chocolate chip cookies for her grandchildren in a comfy cottage somewhere. But here she was, tied to a metal chair, eyes wide, shaking like a leaf. Unlike the last contestant, she seemed to know exactly what was happening.
“In exchange for our loving endorsement, they’ve agreed to loan us one of their star employees. Ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for: the Liqisma!”
Something slunk from the darkness far behind her — or perhaps it’d be more apt to say that the darkness birthed it whole-cloth. It was like a living shadow, and it took my eyes a moment to register what I was even seeing.
How do I even begin describing this creature? I could say it looked almost human, or at least like something that may have been human long ago. Or I could start with its skin, which was all black and shiny as latex and seemingly smooth on first glance, but if you looked closer you’d realize it was covered in a million tiny reptilian scales, almost like a shark. Its head was a bald man’s, utterly devoid of any distinguishing features, like the basic stock template for a human being. It was notable only for a complete lack of pupils and irises, its eyes a pure white.
Its body defied basic biology in so many key ways, I had to stare it at for what felt like an eternity just to wrap my mind around its physiology. It was at least five or six meters long, by my estimate, composed of multiple human torsos stacked one on top of the other like segments of a centipede, each melding with the ones around it at the waist and shoulders. Each torso sported a pair of short, stubby arms that propelled it with terrifying grace. It ended with a pair of human legs, perpetually bent on their knees, beneath a ‘tail’ that looked more like its coccyx was poking free from its body.
The old last could clearly hear it, and kept futilely trying to turn her head around enough to get a peek at what stood behind her. I mouthed uselessly, don’t. You don’t want to know.
“Glad you could join us again, Miss Wethersby! Judging by our ratings last week, you seemed to have been a fan favorite!”
Her voice was so soft, I could barely hear it below the static. “Oh, God. Please, why won’t you people let me go? I’ve told you, I’ve never done anything, never hurt anybody. There must be some sort of—”
He waved a hand over her, and it seemed to forcefully snap her mouth shut. “Please, Miss Wethersby, save your breath for our questions!” Another cue card. “Your first question, my friend: where did you and your husband buy your first home?”
She had to think about it for a long time. Eventually, she cried out, “Alabama! Tuscaloosa, Alabama!”
“Ding ding ding! Why, you’re already doing better than our first contestant! Next question: what breed of dog was your childhood pet?”
She had a pained look on her face as she thought. Eventually, a timer started ticking down. It wasn’t visible, so it wasn’t clear how much time she had left exactly, but the sound it made got more shrill and high-pitched with every second. “Miss Wethersby, need I remind you that we have a time limit on this show?”
A tear ran down her cheek. “I… I keep telling you people, I don’t know. I have dementia, I can’t remember, please—”
That buzzer again. “I’m afraid that was the wrong answer! Liqisma?” The old lady shuddered at the sounds of hundreds of feet drawing a little closer to her. “Now, your first grandchild. What did he look like? What color were his eyes? His hair?”
She was crying harder now, like it hurt her that she couldn’t remember something so dear to her. “I told you I can’t remember! Why are you doing this to me!?”
“If you don’t remember them, why would they remember you?” The host mocked as the buzzer sounded, and the beast drew a little closer. “Really, do you believe they still even think about you? Or do you think they’re glad that the old bag of bones isn’t there sucking up their inheritance?”
This went on for… God, it could have been an hour. I was glued to the screen all the while, frozen with terror, praying for this nightmare to just end, for her to make it out okay somehow. He poured over every little detail of the life she lived and the people she loved, delighting in how little of it she could still recall.
And the thing grew closer, and closer… until she finally felt multiple pairs of hands resting upon her shoulders. The thing was looming over her now, and a long, black tongue a few feet in length emerged from its mouth and ran trails of dark saliva over the back of her head. She looked broken down, eyes raw from crying, and I could tell by the dampness of her dress that she’d wet herself.
“Now, Miss Wethersby, our time here has been fun, but I do believe it is time for our final question. Tell me, what is the name… of your only son?”
She couldn’t even answer anymore. She just stared ahead, like her mind was a million miles away. He cackled as the buzzer sounded one final time, and threw his cue cards aside. “Thank you for playing, Miss Wethersby. Better luck next time.”
I would say the thing unhinged its jaw like a snake, but that’d be an understatement. The way the thing’s face malformed and wrinkled and stretched as it opened its maw, it no longer looked even remotely human. Its jaws must have parted at least thirty centimeters apart, revealing a second, pharyngeal pair of jaws that lashed out and gripped the woman’s skull, pulling her headlong into that darkness.
I could hear bones crunching and snapping as its throat constricted down around her body, peristaltic muscles compacting her into a meat slurry, bit by bit. Yet she just wouldn’t die. Even as her skull and upper body were already crushed and compacted, organs and muscles pressed into mulch, she still kicked her legs, twitched her fingers, let out a gurgling that must have been some attempt at screaming. She was squirming even as the beast snapped its jaw shut around the last of her, condemning her to whatever torments awaited her inside the creature.
And all the while, that horrible laughter. “Don’t worry, folks! She’ll be back next week! And the next. And the next…”
Needless to say, I wasn’t having fun anymore. In fact, I had to turn away and fight the urge to throw up. I stood, about to turn the TV off and —
“Ah, ah, ah! Don’t touch that dial, now!” I froze. There was something chilling about the way he said that, staring right into the screen as if reacting to what I was doing. I hated that grin on his face. “The real show is just beginning.”
And with the barely restrained excitement of a child on Christmas morning, he yanked back another curtain, and I recognized everything.
I recognized that crappy bootleg knockoff Always Sunny in Philadelphia jacket that was so gaudy and terrible it instantly became her favorite thing in her wardrobe. I recognized those subtle hints of slight acne she disguised as fake freckles. I recognized the way her gray eyes would remind me of those overcast mornings at the beach at Hilton Head and pointing out all the cannonball jellyfish washed up on the sands. I recognized that tattoo of the name ʀᴏᴄᴋʏ, how I’d held her all night long as she cried into my shirt after her childhood cat had died.
It was Lila.
I shuddered, gasped, fell from my seat as if I’d been punched in the stomach and the air had been knocked out of me. I couldn’t breathe. This couldn’t be real. I was dreaming right now. I must be. I just had to wake up.
But I couldn’t wake up. Nothing I could do dispelled the sight of her curled up in that… that thing. That bronze statue of a bull, horns jutting on either side of a head that roaring silently up at the heavens, all while the love of my life was locked in its hollowed out belly, visible only through a pane of glass. I could hear her cry out in shock at where she’d found herself, and every whimper felt like it drove a knife through my chest.
The host soaked in the moment. It was ecstasy for him, the suffering of it all. He stared dead into the camera like he was looking right at me as she called, “What is this? Where am I?”
“Why, I have good news, my dear Lila! You’re exactly where every American dreams of being: you’re on TV.” He pointed to the camera. “And we have a very special guest in the audience tonight. Your very own beloved Jackson!”
I shuddered, hearing my own name ooze from his fetid lips. His façade of perfection was slipping, and there was something so profoundly ugly beneath it. Her eyes snapped to the camera, confused, despairing. “Jackson? Baby? What — what’s happening? What is this?”
I don’t know, I thought, gripping the sides of the TV so hard my knuckles turned white, but I’m going to get you out of there, baby. I’m going to find whoever did this and I’m going to bury them all so far beneath that studio that they’ll never-
“I’m afraid Jackson hasn’t joined us quite yet, my dear. But if you truly love him, surely you’ll give him a show to remember, won’t you?” He taunted her. “All I want, after all, is to ask you a few questions! In fact, I’ll offer you a special deal: get even a single answer right, and I’ll let you go free! But get one wrong and, well…”
On cue, a fire was lit beneath her. Small, smoldering for now, but she whimpered as she noticed the heat. We both realized in that instant what this was. By now, I was screaming things I can’t repeat here, and slamming my hands against the TV screen as if I could reach through and save her.
She bit her lip and acquiesced. Not like she had any room to argue. The host grinned and readied a cue card. “Your first question: where are you, Lila?”
“I… I don’t know. How am I supposed to know?”
“You do know, Lila. You know exactly where you are.” He smirked at her. “Here’s a free hint: what’s the last thing you remember, before you woke up here?
She thought about it… and choked back a sob, visibly shaking as the realization slowly settled in. “But… but why? I… I…”
The horrible wail of the buzzer cut her off. “Oooh, too bad! I’m afraid you’ve run out of time!”
Seemingly as if on its own, the fire doubled in size. Sparks licked the belly of the bronze bull, and began to ever-so-slowly heat the surface. She pawed around in the tight confines, searching for any reprieve from the scalding heat all around her as the metal grew hot like it’d been left out in the sun on a summer’s day. “Please! Oh, God, let me out of this thing! It hurts! It hurts!”
The host seemed to breathe in her pain as if stealing a moment’s indulgence. “Now that there is no doubt about where you are, my dear, let us proceed to the second question.” He switched to his next card. “Did you believe in God, in the end?”
“O-of course!” She pled her case as if she was being tried in court. “My entire life… every day I gave to the poor, helped the sick, did whatever I could to honor Hi-“
“I’m afraid you misunderstood my question. I asked, did you believe in him at the end? The very moment your pitiful little life was snuffed out?”
“I always believed! I’d never forsake Him!”
“Yes, yes, I know. You lived a good and holy life, didn’t you?” He cackled. “But what of the very end? You and your little husband were so excited to deliver your first little baby boy. But o, tragedy! It all went wrong, didn’t it? Your precious little boy didn’t make it through childbirth… and you followed closely behind.”
“That whole business with the botched pregnancy, it was… what do you call it? Ah, yes. A ‘test of faith’. And I’m afraid you failed. In your final moments, you watched the light fade from your child’s eyes, and you assumed — wisely, in my humble opinion — that no ‘kind’ and ‘loving’ God would allow something like that to happen.” He laughed. “Funny how after a lifetime of dutiful service, all it takes is one little mistake at the end… to bring you here. To us.”
I’d never seen such depths of despair in a person’s eyes. Such emptiness. Like with every word, he’d been scooping out another piece of her until she was hollow. And then that buzzer roared again, more shrill than ever, and I could barely see her little window through the smoke and flames. The belly of the bull was turning orange in places, and I could hear her flesh start to sizzle like meat on a grill. There are no words for the noises she made. No words at all.
“And our last, final question,” he continued. “What were your last words to your poor, beloved Jackson?”
“I love you!” I called out the answer. Bloody fingerprints stained the TV screen from my slamming my hands against it, as I screamed the answer over and over. “I love you, I love you, I love you!” At some point, I forgot that there was ever a question. I was just screaming it at her as if hoping that she could hear it, that it could bring her a modicum of comfort in that place.
The buzzer sounded again. I couldn't bring myself to look. All I could hear was the roaring of the bull, and the steam rising from its bronze nostrils.
The curtain fell. Silence drowned the sound. The host dropped all pretense that he hadn’t been speaking directly to me. “Now, Jackson. You just might be one of my new favorite audience members this show had ever had. I know this must have been hard for you. But if you’ll just stay tuned, I have one more show I know you’re certain to love!”
I didn’t bother to touch the remote. After all, nothing could be worse than what I’d just seen, right?
Wrong. Horror wracked me as the curtain rose, and I saw the man chained to a chair. I pulled away like a caveman witnessing fire, cringing and stuttering, face wet with sweat. It was the sort of fear that worked its way into your bones like a bad chill, that left you shaking, teeth chattering.
It was me.
An older me, sure. But not by much. Ten years, maybe. A gaunt and hollow version of me, one twisted by ten years of depression and hard drugs. But it was unmistakable.
His eyes widened as he recognized the host. “Oh — oh God, God please no! It can’t be — oh Christ, let me out of this chair, you —“
“Come, now! We wouldn’t want to use the lord’s name in vain, would we? I mean, that would be a sin!” The host laid a hand on the other me’s shoulder. “It may have been a few years since you watched our program, but I’m sure you remember the rules, don’t you, old friend?”
The other me was wordless, on the verge of hyperventilating, just as I was. The host was giddy with delight. “Now! Our first and only question is one I’m sure our viewer will be very interested in: what sins, exactly, do you think landed you here?”
The other me tried to speak, but the words caught in his throat. I could see it in his eyes. The years of self-destruction, the bitter hopelessness, the whirlpool of nihilism and vice and decay. The suffocating depths of a man. The darkness. How could he put it into words?
The sound of the buzzer was like a pig’s squeal. “Mmm, I’m afraid that our viewer is going to have to figure that out for himself! In the meantime, your punishment? Well, we wouldn’t want to spoil anything…”
The curtains slowly began to fall just as a couple other of those black, grotesque monstrosities emerged from the darkness. The curtain covered them all before I could get a good look at their obscene, twisted, asymmetrical figures. All I could hear was the crunching, the sound of skin tearing like paper, the screaming that went on for longer and louder than a human throat or vocal chords could endure.
The image and audio were beginning to distort, glitch, burn away. The tapes were physically melting as they played. My VCR was starting to overheat, sparks pouring from its front panel. The host voice jumped around in tone, his voice fading into the static blur as the tapes bubbled and boiled and distorted. “But, my friends, I’m afraid that concludes tonight’s episode of our show! So, with a final farewell to our dear, beloved viewer, Jackson…”
Just before the image melted away, the camera seemed to jump forward until his face filled the screen, his eyes piercing into mine as he cackled in that singsong voice.
“See you sooooon~”

She likes talking. A lot. She’s very good at manipulating people, but she never really uses that ability much. She’s “cold” to people she doesn’t like, and she’s kinda the definition of “I don’t care what anyone thinks”, but she won’t just go frolicking in public screaming Good For You from Dear Evan Hansen at top lung capacity. She’s very dry sometimes, and extremely stubborn. She holds grudges against people, and she thinks first expressions are the most important. She’s a really supportive friend though. 17 - Cabin 7/Apollo - his mom was a marine biologist, they had a really close connection. He had a dad (his mom’s husband) before Apollo, who was a nurse, but y’know, after he found out his wife was pregnant with someone random’s child, he divorced her. His stepdad was an ecologist, who worked at a zoo, so he spent most of his childhood at a zoo, now he loves animals. Until his stepdad got a divorce from his mom for money reasons. He’s the middle child of two mortal sisters. His older sister was born from his dad before Apollo, and his younger sister was born from his stepdad. His older sister’s name is Devyn, and his younger sister’s name is Emma - He has curly dirty blonde hair and suntanned skin, with brown/azure eyes that appear orange in the sun. Sometimes he uses hair gel, but he’s mostly given that up, because nobody really cares about what you look like at CHB. He’s often covered in dirt, and sometimes has leaves and twigs caught in his hair. During capture the flag he puts mud on his arms and stuff, and sometimes he creates tiger patterns on himself from the mud :] - He’s very passionate, and mostly happy, but he gets hurt very easily, emotionally. I've been looking through various posts and seeing what some people had to say about the game. I had some of my own ideas about how to either make this current game better or improve a possible sequel. My ideas are as follows. Have a look and see if you'd like to see any of these, or if you have any to add!

CharactePublic Relations

First and foremost, what I think is in most desperate need of a revamp is how we interact with the world of Stellar Blade and its inhabitants. I think a future game would benefit from the following:

• More time with Lily and the new main male teammate (or whoever the third member of the team ends up being, but I’d prefer a male). I felt like I barely knew Lily and Adam by the end of the game and I’d like as the player to be able to interact with them more. I don’t fully understand how Lily grew to love Eve so much or how Adam came to trust Eve so fully with as little time as they had with each other.
• To the above point, I'd also like to be able to bring our friends with us and have them fight alongside us, if we want them to come along. Bringing them with us could be tied to our Affinity score with the character and/or unlock certain perks or side quests.
• It should be a little harder to level up Affinity than it was in this game (I made three purchases from Roxanne before we were “good friends,” for instance) and to have more in-depth quest lines for the citizens of Xion. I'd really like to get attached to the place and the people.
• Perhaps a real romance element to the game. “Adam and Eve…” Now, I’m not exactly committed to the idea, Eve doesn’t need a love interest… but it’d be nice to have the option to engage in that sort of thing, if we want to.
• For choices to matter! We have maybe two or three dialogue options in the game and only one of them is of any consequence. I’d like to have an affect on the larger world and have a sort of “reputation” system. People see us as an angel or a devil based on what we say and do… especially with how the Bad Ending and True Ending go.

Story

• For Mother Sphere to be more fleshed out. Yes, she’s the standard, run-of-the-mill rogue AI who took over the world and wiped out her creators. But, there can always be more to it. Nothing intelligent does something for no reason. I’d like to know more about her and her personality, not just about whether people are devoted to her or scornful of her based on whether or not they see her as their god.
• Perhaps a redemption arc or a coming-to-terms with her place in the world for Raven, or turning her into a true Big Bad. Her profile seems to indicate she’s in a living hell at the moment and Eve intends to forget about her and leave her in that broken state… but perhaps there’s something to be said for an “enemy of my enemy is my friend” or for Mother Sphere superimposing her will over Raven despite the Naytiba corruption.
• Eve came a long way and the way the True Ending plays out leads me to believe that we will see fewer Naytibas and more of Mother Sphere’s forces. The Naytiba don’t have to totally disappear as an enemy type, but the sequel should definitely focus on all knew enemy types.
• There should be a bit more lore about why Adam was so angelic and about how he came to be that way, because I don’t recall seeing anything about why Adam is quite literally an angel in his true form when everything else is a corrupted, vile, bodily-horrific monster. He seems to be fully integrated into Eve and has had a death pf personality with that… but perhaps in the sequel he doesn’t have to be quite gone and can continue to communicate with her on the Psychic/Astral Plane.
• How does Eve view herself and how does she feel about massacring the Angels who attacked in the True Ending? How does she feel about the citizens of Xion now that she’s no longer an Andro-Eidos? How has becoming a “real Human” affected her psyche? Lily was worried that Eve would become someone she didn’t know… maybe a sequel would be the perfect place to address that.
• More obvious lore told by completing the story events and quests, rather than digging through the documents and whatnot.
• Respectfully, ShiftUp could work on the story and think how they want events to playout all the way through, as there were a few glaring inconsistencies with regard to who (Adam/Raven, for instance) was doing what and why, as well as some other things that just didn’t make sense in the narrative or felt rushed.
• As a way to bring Eve down from being over-powered, Mother Sphere could create a sort of poison to suppress Eve’s powers that could be cured as we go, for standard gameplay progression.

Revamped Save System

Next up is no more important than any other thought, it’s just what I came up with next due to the reality being somewhat vexing.

• More than one save file. This would be useful for if multiple people want to play the game on the same console without their own dedicated account.
• Saving at camps can stay, but if it’s going to be a narrative-driven game with no option to explore the world afterward, a Chapter Select is essential so we can re-visit our favorite parts of the game without having to slog through the parts we don’t like (Space Center turrets, anyone?)

Costumes

We all like costumes… except those of you who played the entire game in Eve’s birthday suit and didn’t realize it took away your shields until after the game was over. But while the reward of clothes is enough for some people, here are some thoughts about how accessorization could be improved in the future:

• Being able to Favorite the outfit(s) we like the most so we don’t have to scroll through a long list to find them. At the same time, being able to Archive outfits we don’t like or never will use.
• A transmog system that we can have stats from one costume but wear another along with the accessories we chose.
• If certain kinds of costumes had dedicated special moves! Now, I’m not saying that there needs to be a unique special move for 74+ costumes… but I am saying it would be cool if each costume type did something cool in addition to the usual Beta or Burst moves. If we didn’t have the Tachy Mode, this feature would be in place of that. For instance: the normal Airborne Squad suits would have the standard Stellar Blade attacks, but the Biker suits could call a motorcycle out of nowhere and do damage to enemies, the Motivation suit could boost stats, the Ocean Maid suit could reel in a huge shark from out of nowhere to damage enemies… the list goes on. How cool would that be?!

Combat

The combat in this game is intricate and very enjoyable. It’s very Souls-like. However, there are some things that could possible make it better (to each their own):

• Different types of combat could be cool. We currently have sword and gunplay… but what about unarmed combat, too? Not necessarily extensive, but Eve and her counterparts seems pretty strong. I wouldn’t mind seeing her make use of those great legs and kick the crap out of enemies as more than just a cool finisher. Could be “equipped” or set, just like the Drone gun.
• Sections where Eve fights with someone of equal skill, but longer than she did with Tachy or Raven. Tachy’s boss fight didn’t live up to the potential it had, and it could have been just as challenging as what we wound up facing with Raven, even if she were corrupted into a Naytiba. If we’re going to be encountering more Angels in the sequel, they shouldn’t be easy to mow down, like in the Good/True Ending. They should be a real challenge.
• I would love combo finishers a QTE’s like in Spider Man/Force Unleashed. One simple button push doesn’t quite scratch that itch, does it?
• Better dodging or combat that can deal with mobs and ganks better than a Beta move that you might not have. The Perfect Dodge is fine, but the half-step dodge isn’t really useful when you’re being mobbed. Beta and Burst deal AOE damage, but the game’s primary fighting mechanic is 1v1. When they toss in mobs of spiders, walking turrets, and the like, it really shows how inefficient it is.

Enemies

• The enemies of the next game can't be just Naytiba. We’re taking the fight to Mother Sphere. She’s had hundreds if not thousands of years to work on her weapons of war, and they can be just as diverse as the array of Naytibas we dealt with in the first game.
• The majority of the enemy types should be Mother Sphere creations designed specifically to take down the new variant of species that Eve now is.
• If we do stay on Earth, I’d love to see new variations of the mutants and possible some more sentient Naytiba-human hybrid bosses.
• Some male Andro-Eidos bosses would be nice. I know that's a bit of a stretch to hope for, given the whole "Amazon Brigade" thing she's got going on, and how all of the people from the colony seem to be one gender only, but if Mother Sphere created the Andro-Eidos, she’s got a few templates for male warriors, I’m sure. It couldn’t hurt. I’d love to see what ShiftUp does with male fanservice characters, since there weren’t many good-looking men in Stellar Blade aside from Adam.

Gameplay/Quality of Life

• More mini games aside from chest puzzles and energy output puzzles. Things you might find in something like Final Fantasy. They don’t have to be extensive or anything, but something aside from fishing would be nice.
• More optional bosses. The world is vast, and the array of bosses could be equally large… but I understand for their first game why they didn’t. Not everything can be Dark Souls or Elden Ring.
• Better, more thought-out side quests. Something other than fetch quests or “go kill this” quests. Maybe quests that enhance your Affinity/relationship with a charactecharacters, or that give you a variety of rewards. Possibly even based on how well you do.
• When fishing, we actually see what kind of fish we’ve hooked before it pops out of the water. More fishing locations would be good… maybe somewhere that we could actually see fish if we go underwater.
• More biome variety other than Wasteland and Desert. I know why we were only seeing dystopian environments and badlands… but it’s about time the world started healing, isn’t it? I mean the space elevator region was more verdant.
• Additional traversal options, like flight or maybe some type of vehicle/mount, like Adam’s bike. A crotch-rocket sort of vehicle wouldn’t be out of place for Eve to use, would it (if she can’t use her wing). It would certainly help if we play as another Angel who can’t fly in the first place.
• Being able to play as more than one character would be nice, so long as their sections are interesting and make sense to play as. Lily could be attacked by Naytiba/Mother Sphere forces and need to hide, like Joker in Mass Effect 2, but could also make use of her skills. A character like Adam could make use of scavenging skills, etc.
• Post-game exploration is a must. Sometimes we don’t want to do all the tedious tasks before we complete the more exciting elements of the game.
• Maps in dungeons so you don’t get turned around or can at least find what it is you’re trying to get to.
• A jukebox feature! The soundtrack for this game is great, and I’m sure the one for the sequel will be, as well. Rather than listening to the calm, quite music at camp, maybe we could listen to our favorite songs from the game there. Or maybe Lily could create a mod for us that would enable us to listen to music on the go and there could be a little idle animation where Eve bobs/jiggles/wiggles as appropriate to the music.

Misc. Things

• A new protagonist would be acceptable to me. ShiftUp specializes in female characters, but I wouldn’t be opposed to a male protagonist.
• More customization over our player character and our friends could be cool. It’s absolutely not necessary, but I wouldn’t mind having the option to model the new male Adam-like character’s face after my own or after characters I think would look great next to Eve. Conversely, I’m sure that female players would love to make the new Lily or Eve character (should either not appear) however they wanted. Race, facial structure, hair, eyes, all of that; a character creator similar to that of Mass Effect Andromeda, or whatever other game does that well.
• A prequel starring Tachy or Raven. Tachy was taken from us too soon, and we need our girl back. Conversely, Raven’s descent into madness could be quite the tale, and we’d see the Naytibas we’re used to seeing.
• We could find a new Arisa model while exploring the world and we could recruit her. If we do, she’d take care of us and our Safehouse as our maid, and quite possibly get into arguments with Lily about keeping things tidy.
• For Raven to be our token evil, comic relief teammate. We must be allowed to fix her!

Need help with first time build <$2000, relatively future proof
I’d like some help for my first PC build. Reusing a template from another post. Hoping to future proof as mush as possible while staying under $2000, closer to $1500 would be awesome. I have a 2011 scratch air 8, and my wife rides a similar year (unsure exactly) Specialized Stumpjumper. We've ridden both for a couple years now. Both are full suspension, both have hydraulic disc brakes.
Looking at throwing on a BBS02 on each bike. Going for a ultra slim shark for the wife's bike and mini shark for mine. Ordering the batteries from bafang, both 48v 11.6ah, 18650 cells. These are the form factor that will fit in our triangles (printed the templates to check).
Looking at using the 500C for display.
Aiming to use a 36T sprocket on each bike, but will see how interference with the chain stay goes. We want help getting up inclines on trails more than we want any top speed.
Total comes just under $2,000 to convert both bikes.
Mostly will be used for trail riding with a few small jumps, we're not extreme riders by any measure. We mostly stick to blue and green trails, I have 15 years of BMX before getting our MTBs but my wife mainly rode beach cruisers before MTB. I'm happy to go at her pace, but every now and then I'll break off and do a black trail. Just not one with big jumps, I'm too old to be risking crashing like I used to.
We also plan to ride around our hilly neighborhood about 1/2 as much as we ride trails.
Hoping for about 2-4 hours ride time, depending on type of ride of course.
I'm 6'8 230lbs, wife is 5'8 150lbs.
Our bikes are pretty low grade at this point, just being old etc, so we want to just keep the ebike parts similar. If this goes well I could see us buying much newer bikes and building with more power, or possibly even jump up to dirt bikes.
With all that in mind, does this sound like the right motobattery combinations for our situation? Anything jump off the screen as a bottleneck for the stated goals?

6.(Unsure/ speculation) The Loka app on playstore has got about 100k downloads, but let's be real half of it has got be farmed bot downloads from somewhere.If they can bot spam their insta, then they could just do the same with playstore downloads too.
Im just disappointed cause scams like LOKA leave a negative look upon the gaming industry as a whole. But on a good note many indian devs with quality are getting funded pretty well by some VC's. Disclaimer: I'm not an expert. This reflects my personal experience. I'm also always glad to be corrected in the pursuit of providing the best info possible for people.
This is a post for UK citizens applying for a Romanian DNV but some of the information on how to save some money might be useful for UK citizens applying for other visas. I recently had my DNV application accepted and plan on living in Romania for the full two years (providing my initial visa can keep getting extended). This guide is really for those who are preparing around 4 months in advance of going. I think the costs will ramp up exponentially the closer to the time you need it for. Another caveat is, it really helps if you have even just one Romanian friend. My best friend is Romanian and I have several very helpful friends inside the country and this meant a lot of the things like, finding a translator and getting health insurance became a lot easier. Avoid posting questions on Facebook - especially expat groups. I got contacted by a whole host of scammers.
Why Romania?
Romania is awesome. The people are incredibly friendly, the culture and architecture is a super interesting mix of influences, the food is great, the weather is superb and if you are earning a British salary its pretty cheap. The language is also easier to learn than a lot of places (I'm an avid Turkish learner and its taken me about half the time to get to an A2 level of RO.)
Why am I writing this?
Well, the Romanian Foreign Office website has to be inclusive to all the countries in the world so the advice on the documents to provide is general to account for this, but doesn't match up well with how the UK legal system works. Lots of stuff needs to be notarised in RO but in the UK our legal system is a lot more relaxed. I want to give a shoutout to the people working at the Romanian Consulate in London who were super helpful both by email and in person. The main reason I am writing this is the number of Facebook sharks and lawyers that will try to get you to pay extortionate fees to streamline the process for you, but with a bit of work you can do it all yourself for probably around ~£600.
The guide:
Firstly your job contract, letter from your company and your letter of intent all need to be officially translated. This means that the translations need to be notarised. NOTE THESE DOCUMENTS CANNOT BE E-SIGNED. This was a massive faff for me as I needed to get my company to re-sign my documents by hand. I have no idea if this notarisation can be done in the UK but what I did was send these documents to a translator in Bucharest who translated and notarised them for me over the course of about 2 months (I think it could have been done quicker but it would have been more expensive). In total along with notarisation of the P60 and my DBS this came to £260. Sending these documents by post to Romania secure signed was another £90 but I think if you have friends frequently going too and from the UK to RO I would just pass them to them.
A little more on each of these documents.
Job contract - You need to have been working for at least 3 years for the company to be eligible and earn at least 3 times the national minimum (I think its around 3500EUR ~ 3000GBP per month). As stated before, must be signed, has to have clear hours works, money earned etc. etc.
Company document - I found this letter for the Spanish DNV:

I amended it to specifically state that the company were completely happy for me to work abroad for the duration of the digital nomad visa.
Personal document - This one was fairly easy for me as I have been to RO many times and have some ties there but just make it personal. If you are into Scuba Diving, say you want to go to X Scuba Diving Club in Constanța for example. I also emphasised how I am learning Romanian and making an attempt to engage with local culture.
Notarised tax document and notarised criminal record (the costly items). Both require a two step process, although you can shortcut the second signature for criminal record as explained below. The first step is signing of the document by a legal representative (legalising the document) and the second step is getting the FCDO to apostille the document (I think its a verification for foreign entities that confirms the document is what it says it is). Consistent with the above I'd go for a good old fashioned apostille rather than the e-apostille (not sure its accepted).
For the tax document a P60 is what you need if you are a PAYE employee otherwise self assessment if you are self-employed (I guess). You can get a local lawyer to "legalize" it for £5-10 - this is just a signature on the document and a stamp from the law office. Check that the local lawyer is FCDO approved before doing this. Don't bother with a notary, you will get gouged for no reason i.e. it will cost you £100 for the same outcome. Then get it notarised by the FCDO (£40).
Criminal record proof is actually the more annoying one to obtain. I submitted a DBS in the end but due to the nature of how it is legalised its actually cheaper to get an ACRO so if you aren't in a hurry I'd recommend going down this route. DBS is £~11 for the basic check + £100 for legalization + £40 for notarisation. Why is it so expensive? Well lawyers usually won't sign the DBS document directly so the way its legalised needs to be done by a notary. I wasted time and money here, make sure your lawyer isn't just signing a photocopy as this won't be accepted. Hence, total cost of £150. Whereas, ACRO is £50 upfront but is already legalised due to the fact its signed by a police officer therefore can be sent automatically to the FCDO so it brings the total cost to £90.
Health insurance - I found a local health insurance broker in RO for this, please comment below if you've found a cheaper way. It cost me approx £100 per 3 months.
Accomodation - I can't help you here as I am staying with a friend so I presented a signed document saying my friend was happy for me to stay in their house but I imagine you can present a signed rental contract.
Flight proof - I just printed off an email showing I had a flight into the country.
Photo ID - Another slightly annoying one as you need to present a 3cm x 4cm photograph which won't usually done by your local Boots machine. I used photoshop to measure it out and put six on a canvas that aligned with my local Boots standard photograph print measurement guidelines. In all it ended up costing me about 30p but about 30 minutes of fiddling around with photoshop.
So all in all it could cost you around £500-£600 purely for the visa related parts - excluding flights, accommodation and health insurance. 3 months to gather the documents, a few days until the embassy verified the digital representation and then 2 weeks to get a result after my initial embassy appointment. :)
A few notes on actually applying. You upload everything digitally. There is a hidden size limit on the site so I had to use the adobe compression tool to compress my PDFs (this cost around £20 for a one month subscription but that is only because I didn't want some nasty malware from using a free one - there are probably safe free ones). The embassy seems to give appointments for the next day so when you press submit make sure you are prepared to go a few days after. Probably fine for most people but I don't live in London so I need to rebook a couple of times before it was sorted. Anyway all the staff are super friendly and super chilled so if in doubt just pop them an email :) When you go to the embassy make sure to specify you want it from a specific date otherwise they might assume you want it straight away (I only comment as I got asked this specifically).
I will update this post with further posts about getting the six month extension once inside the country (and any further extensions on the long stay visa).

Sun Vulcan was the last of three Super Sentai shows to be produced in collaboration with Marvel. It is also the first real attempt* at adapting Sentai for American audiences. Stan Lee had this great idea to mix the Japanese action footage with newly filmed footage of American actors. Supposedly there is a pilot episode that has been lost to time, but Lee wasn’t ever able to get the project off the ground. Margaret Loesch, the president of Marvel Productions at the time would later be in charge of Fox Kids when another television producer would bring a similar idea to her. But that is a story for another subreddit. As always I would love to hear your thoughts on the show.
*(There were English dubs of Gorenger and J.A.K.Q. broadcast in the Philippines but that is, by definition, not America.)

Overview:

• Sun Vulcan is the J.A.K.Q. to Denziman’s Gorenger. It was certainly successful, but unlike Denziman’s building off of what was established in BFJ, Sun Vulcan pushes against the grain to establish itself as its own entity. Nothing since J.A.K.Q. has tried such an extreme tonal shift, and each show still starts off with the Gorenger template, but Sun Vulcan tries to spread its wings the most. Some of its early filming techniques is reminiscent of J.A.K.Q. in a fun call back.
• The show is notable for only having three heroes, none of which are female, though it does have a female main character who takes the place of a costumed hero in all but skill level. The action lends itself to slapstick fun, and it is great to see the Japan Action Club really let loose. Unfortunately, the villains of the show outshine the heroes at every turn, including one returning from the previous series. I constantly found myself more interested in them and I don’t know how I feel about that.
• This was my fifth Showa series in a row and I was definitely feeling a bit of burnout from that. If not for some incredibly stupid personal goals, I would have moved on to something newer. I’m trying not to let that color my judgement and I feel like I’m doing a decent job of that despite appearances.

Heroes:

• Ryuusuke Oowashi and Takayuki Hiba (VulEagle/Red)
  • Halfway through the show, Ryuusuke Kawasaki decided that singing was better than acting and left the show. In universe he was selected to be the space shuttle pilot, which is far more important than saving the world. He at least got an on screen send off, though it feels tacked on as his successor is only introduced at the time of transfer. The two were old friends who trained as pilots together and the show barely distinguishes between the two. These are basically the same guy. I like the first one’s hair better, which is the only metric I have to differentiate the two.I understand that the actor just was not available. Unfortunately, there a several moments where a callback or appearance would have been great. Takayuki loses his ability to transform on two separate occasions. There is even a space rocket episode late in the series that would have been perfect for Ryuusuke to appear in!
  • Both Reds (because they are the same guy, no matter what the characters are called) will occasionally embrace the color of their suit and do a kool-aid through an unsuspecting wall.
• Kin’ya Samejima (VulShark/Blue)
  • I have no notes on this guy and don’t remember much about him. I don’t think that’s ever happened to me before. Any additional bullet points will be the result of jogging my memory with the wiki. Um… I guess I like his one-legged shark pose.
  • *Research goes here*
• Asao Hyou (VulPantheYellow)
  • It is hard to approach this show without talking about the sex-pest elephant in the room. I almost wish I didn’t know until afterwards but the knowledge certainly led to some interesting moments were he’s a bit weird towards women from a modern perspective. I disliked the character from his first scenes of the first episode, but not for anything that the actor would later do. Vul Panther is just irritating. I usually like the goofy, comic relief characters, but Panther is a bathrobe away from being the worst part of J.A.K.Q. There is something in the way that he talks that offends my ears and something about that goofy thing he does with his mouth that makes me choose violence.
  • That being said, there is a beautiful episode where Vul Panther’s dad wants him to come run the family business but Panther cannot reveal his secret identity. Most of these shows follow a line of secrecy to openness without much effort to maintain either. This was a great exception to that trend and proved to be surprisingly heartwarming. It also gave us Vul Panther in a bathtub because of course it did.
  • At one point we get an episode that involves Vul Panther comforting a pantsless child*. Full on tighty-whities. Physically comforting. It goes on way too long. Sweet Jesus.*This is not at all something that should be assumed** about the actor given the details of his crimes, but sweet krispy kreaming christ does it stand out with everything that happened.**This is not a defense of what he did. The actor is a fuckhead who only gets worse the deeper you search and has not been punished enough for his bullshit.
• Misa Arashiyama (Should have been/White)
  • I am conflicted on how I feel about Misa. On the one hand, there was no need to keep her from being a ranger. On the other hand, even though they weren’t going to have a female ranger they made sure to have a lead female character in a prominent role. On the other hand, they treat her as so much less than the rangers and make a point in the fencing episode to show that she cannot hang with the big dogs. On the other hand, she is shown to be competent as a high-ranking member of the organization. She is entrusted with important tasks and is willing to make the same tough decisions as her father. She definitely isn’t just a nepo hire and proves herself time and again, just not as a competent fightefencer.
• Daizaburou Arashiyama
  • The chief wears his sunglasses inside and is easily one of the hardest mentors in the whole meta series. His daughter works by his side and when shit goes sideways, he trusts her to do the important things instead of hiding her away. In one episode, a very important NPC gets kidnapped and both he and the NPC understand that it is better for the NPC to get exploded rather than risk Black Magma getting what they want. The NPC is ultimately saved, but the Chief is still a rock.
  • I understand that the aisea/land animal theme limits the number of heroes. But I like to think that there is an alternate universe where Misa and the Chief are white and black rangers. I would call them Vul Sunlight and Vul Midnight in order to fit with the nature theme, while still being a bit different. In the time of Sixth Rangers, that is probably what would have happened. I’m curious to revisit this idea when I see how Liveman and other Core 3 teams handle it. I’ll also be paying attention to Dekaranger for reasons that I hope are obvious.
• Denzi Nun
  • The only real follow up to the plot from Denziman comes in the form of a two-parter that focuses on Hedrian. She is being incapacitated by someone with psychic powers. This person is revealed to be a Denzarian who became a nun to avoid/deal with her powers. This puts her right in the crosshairs of Black Magma and Hedrian and gives us a compelling story of Denzi Nun and her sister trying to survive against forces intent on destroying them for existing. This is the story that was supposed to be the Denziman crossover and I cannot help but wonder what the original version would have looked like. What we did get was outstanding and I am grateful for that.

Villains:

• The villains in this show are far more interesting than the heroes and are the ones who move the plot forward in the final episodes. I wish that I could say that this is a good thing about the show, but it is the result of bland rangers as much as it is the result of compelling villains.
• Where the show handles Misa poorly, it makes up for in many competent female villains. The Zero Girls are a team of four color-coded generals that harass the team at every turn. They are nearly an anti-sentai in every respect, right down to the individual weapons. The purple one gets a yo-yo which is such a fun and ridiculous idea that I can’t help but see it as a precursor to Goggle-V.
• Hedrian
  • The legendary Machiko Soga returns as the only character to appear in the main cast of two different series. Returning from Denziman, she gets unfrozen from a block of ice and gains cybernetic implants to continue her reign of awesomeness.
  • This poor woman once more has to deal with another late-addition, traitorous villain in the form of Lightning Galaxy. Can’t she just take over the world in peace?
• Dark Q
  • The useless robot that they just can’t quit. Until they do. I missed this recurring henchman who was simultaneously an elite assassin and complete fuckup. Every time one would fail it would be de commissioned and replaced with the next model. Could have been a great ongoing thing, but they abandoned the idea early on.
• Amazon Killer
  • Yukie Kagawa has appeared several times in various Tokusatsu projects. The most notable being Miss Sapphire (a compelling villain in Gorenger) and Amazoness (the main general in Spider-man). Her role in Sun Vulcan might as well be a carbon copy of the latter character despite being a long-lost Vader Clan ally of Hedrian.
  • In Spider-man she wore the skimpy outfit usually associated with female characters, but swapped to something more sensible halfway through. I am happy to report that she continues the trend of being fully dressed in this show as well. I always assumed that the actress herself prompted the change. Her appearance here suggests no hard feelings on the part of the creatives.
  • Towards the end of the series we get an episode where Amazon Killer has to kill a rocket. She is threatened with death if she fails and I was rooting for her to win. It is interesting how this Amazon vs Rocket conflict mirrors her endgame in Spider-man as well.
• Much like in Denziman, the series ends with villain infighting. Here though, it is the culmination of a series wide setup of Hedrian betraying Hell Saturn. But we also get the extra wrench of Lightning Galaxy (Amazon Killer’s former ally and lover) showing up late in the series and trying to take over for himself. We get a fun interplay of the three sides vying for influence over the others with the poor Sun Vulcans stuck in the middle.

Gripes:

• This is the third show (and fourth character) in a row where the lead female character jumps into a pool in the opening. Same shot. Same pool. It’s weird.
• There is an episode that starts with a monster killing 200 dogs in the middle of the night. Fuck that monster.
• Did I mention that the characters are bland? Red was interchangeable with his replacement. The wiki didn’t even have anything to say about Blue. Yellow had the most to talk about and I don’t even like him. I enjoyed the show, but the rangers themselves are the weakest part.

Favorite Bits:

• Occasionally they will film ranger footage on the same indoor set that they use for the mecha fights. It’s pretty noticeable.
• Eri Kanuma (007 from Gorenger) makes what I’m pretty sure is her final Toku appearance as a robot teacher. She is always a delight and I love how so many heroic women wind up coming back as villains and just knocking it out of the park. Her best villainous role is still as the snake woman in episode 10 of Spider-man.
• Follow the sun! Catch the sun!
• At one point they tease us with a possible second mecha, long before that becomes a standard. They actually use the blueprints for the Battle Fever J robo as a prop. Don’t even try to hide it either.
• The show full on kills a robot child in episode 11.
• Mind control doesn’t work on Sun Vulcan. They go out of their way to establish this multiple times and it is a fun powedetail.
• Sun Vulcan adds an ending dance early on. It comes before the ending theme in a couple of episodes and features the gangers teaching children exercise in the form of dance. This is much earlier in Sentai than one might assume they start.
• My favorite episode of the show (34) involves Black Magma resurrecting the ghosts of Dracula, Billy the Kid, and Joan of Arc to attack Tokyo and cause havoc. The ghost of “actual” “historical” Dracula. Not Vlad the Impaler. Dracula. It’s as ridiculous as it sounds and more. The best Toku always leaves you saying, “what the fuck did I just watch.”

I can't believe this quarter is over! Reflecting over this quarter, I'm amazed at how much I've learned and grown over the past three months. Returning to DAWG the green quests after a break, I found the material surprisingly easier to grasp than I remembered. i think the difference really made me realize just how much I've developed throughout this class, even though some of the mini-quests that were left were pretty trivial hahaha. When I first joined this class, I was really uncertain about my abilities. I remember asking my prof & if taking this course was a good idea, given my previous experiences with classes that were less rigorous than the blue and green quests from CS 2A and CS 2B.
I guess now i really see the importance of perseverance and attention to detail, especially when debugging. From my experience with the Ford-Fulkerson algorithm for maximum flow. Understanding the algorithm itself wasn't easy, and debugging my implementation of it took considerable time and effort. I had reached many stumbling blocks and setbacks, but each one has ultimately helped me grow and learn. By seeking help from peers, participating in discussions, and leveraging online resources, I was able to make a lot of progress

For the Shark quest, I also compare it with Merge Sort and Insertion Sort and discuss how the std library's sorting function optimizes performance by switching to Insertion Sort for smaller arrays, resulting in a better overall performance. Here prof & sees an opportunity for EC by testing this out, u/wenyi_shi and u/wenkai_y show us their results in testing insertion sort compared to the sorts we have implemented and the stl's.

This is a 3-day event of 24-hour subs. Enemies are H.A.M.M.E.R. goons on day one, Sentry bots get added for days two and three, and a potpourri of other tile-movers represented scattered throughout. (Note: I think I correctly remember which sub is dropped for the 3-day version, but it's been so long since the 3-day version has run that I don't have a ready template for the event.)
The Join Forces nodes are on the main event page, as well as 1v1 nodes using any variant of Black Panther on the first three days. There are no wave nodes. A [color] Multiple Man (Jamie Madrox) cover is available as a progression reward in SCL7+. A total of 250 shards of The Hunter (Midnight Suns) are available as progression rewards in SCL 10.
