2. Where do I find my application/reference number for the DCAT Results Portal? Look up āDLSU - Undergraduate Application Verified Completeā in your email or access the application portal.

4. Does DLSU grant scholarships? Yes. Refer to this link for available scholarships.
5. How much is the reservation fee payment? PHP 10,000. It is NON-REFUNDABLE.
6. When is the deadline for reservation fee payment? June 7, 2024. Applicants are advised to pay for the reservation fee as soon as possible to secure their slot in their accepted degree program.
7. I failed the DCAT. Can I apply for a reconsideration?
"Yes, please email [admission.requirements@dlsu.edu.ph](mailto:admission.requirements@dlsu.edu.ph) with subject heading: Reconsideration Appeals (ID124). All appeals will be evaluated based on application documents submitted by the applicant and are subject to final approval of the Admissions Committee. Late requests will not be processed." Call OAS (FAQ #3) to clarify if the same instruction applies.
8. Can I physically submit my reconsideration letter or COP letter in Taft? No. Outsiders cannot enter campus.
9. "I got redirected to a different program." or "I want to pursue a different program." Can I apply for Change of Program (COP)? What is the format and process?
Yes. COP requests are NOT guaranteed and are subject to availablity and program requirements. There is no "standard format" required by DLSU. Use TNR, 12pt, 1" margin. Refer to this link for instructions and formal letter content.
10. How many times can I request for COP? Only once before enrollment; otherwise you will undertake shifting during your studies in DLSU.
11. "My COP was denied." or "The COP period is done." What can I do? You can shift after completing two terms of residency in your current program.

Cameron Winter was a college classmate of Niko Tatapoulus, often socializing with other students while Nick was studying. Rather than getting a doctorate like Nick, Winter started a company after graduating: Solstice Technologies, of which he is CEO.
Soon after the existence of a second Godzilla was revealed to the world, Winter attempted to manipulate the creature in a scheme to get new military contracts. However he was foiled by Nick and his recently formed H.E.A.T. team. Since then Winter has pretended that his schemes are still about making money, but it's clear from their involvment in all of them that Godzilla and Nick Tatapoulus live rent-free in his head now.

I have posted twice on this sub here and here. You can have a look to get some background on this (long) story. This is going to be a very frank portrayal of my journey and admittedly is a function of privilege to be able to do this.
302 to 319
I started my GRE journey back in 2019 August wherein I signed up for Indian coaching classes there were 2 hours every day. I did all the concepts, but did not realise how much of a behemoth GRE truly is. I studied the concepts and did the Kaplan books for both quant and verbal. I gave 5 practise tests from Manhattan getting scores around 157/155 in quant. I had given a diagnostic in August before studying and had scored a 302. I first gave the GRE in oct just to get a feel of the exam and scores 153 quant and 155 verbal. I used to also study barrons 800 words, 50 every day.
I gave my first serious attempt in Jan 2020 and score a 150 quant and 160 verbal, 5.5 AWA. I was crushed. It wasnāt just that I had gotten a low score despite studying, but had gotten a 150! I had always done well in school and gotten a scholarship so this was indeed a grounding and sobering reality check. I reached out to college seniors, any and everybody to understand the psyche of the exam. What I gauged was
To be honest I really donāt know where I got the focus or resolve but when I got that 150, I told myself that this cannot be me. I will DEFEAT this exam. For one month, I just studied quant from magoos, that too only concepts I was weak in and the gre official book. I reappeared for the exam just before my finals and score a 159 Q and 155 V. In that 1 month period, I did not touch verbal. During the exam I was very very focused on the quant section.
In the 1 month, I also did not take any mocks (donāt recommend this, more on that below). I was elated and relieved. I applied for the program at my dream uni and well obviously got rejected.
Covid hit. I thought of applying and studying for the gre again in 2020 and basically procrastinated on this. Finally I half-hearted did the Manhattan strategy guides in Jan and sat the exam in 2021 Feb. Scored a 150 Quant and a 160 verbal. Lol. I wasnāt surprised because I hadnāt really studied and was just pushing myself to finish the exam. Git rejected from everywhere I applied.
2021 was a very hard year. I got dengue, covid, fainted and hit my head very bad and had a devastating break up. In dec of that year I decided to focus on my mental health and started anti-depressants. I tried studying but I was stuck.
Cut to 2022 July when I again suffered through sexual assault and was really scared to apply. But this was truly my rock bottom. The only way was up. By this time I had failed so so much that I decided to give this application season MY ALL.
I found a great private tutor for maths as well as the TTP Course. In October I signed up for gregmat and this course changed how I saw verbal and the exercises greg has formulated. I really really enjoyed studying on gregmat. TTP was good but extremely tedious.
In November I lost focus again as I was dealing with an ex who returned and doing applications for schools that did not require the GRE. I applied to those programs in dec 2022. Dec 18 I picked up studying seriously again and basically gave it MY all in Jan and dec, just studying a lot and pushing myself. I gave 4 mocks before the test and was scoring 157 on PP2. I sat the GRE Jan 25, 2023 and scores (again) a crushing 156 quant and 155 verbal. (The test had gone very badly. I woke up not been rested, having studied so hard, feeling a headache through the exam and frankly abandoning the third quant section)
I decided to give it ONE Last attempt and then apply to my dream university. Btw all this time I had only been doing quant and none verbal. I had this one sheet that I had created which was good to visualise words as I just bunched a lot of words together. I realised gre doesnāt care much about the subtle differences between word usage. (I am also naturally better at words)
Anyhow gave the last attempt on March 6th and scored a 160 quant and 159 verbal- 319 total. For me this was unimaginable having been stuck near 310s. Between Jan and feb I only did practise tests to build stamina and quant questions I did not know, thatās it. I consistently scored 160 in all Manhattan prep tests.
Finally 2 weeks before the exam I stopped studying or even revising completely and just sat for the exam having given up.
I finally applied to my dream school with this score. Here is everything I have learnt on this 4 year journey about gre/standardised testing. Also some tips at the bottom on applications as well:
2022 I knew that this year I couldnāt screw up my applications. I decided in July itself to do whatever it takes to reach there.

- These tests unfortunately are correlated to money and privilege. I could afford these different prep programs and the test itself. Applications in general skew heavily for people with access.
- GRE is a test of endurance. It is a marathon exam. For me the biggest hurdle was to build stamina to face a QVQVQ test as I found that the hardest and I always gave up by the last section. Doing multiple mocks at the same time helped me a lot.
- Blindly trust gregmat for verbal and just do what he says and YOU will be fine. Verbal isnāt a test of English but of logic and vocab. There is a reason why an answer is correct. The sooner you understand that the better.
- Do not take gre personally. It is only a limited test of your math and some verbal ability on that day and time. Do not ever let it define you. You are so much more than a stupid test.
- Your GRE journey is yours and yours alone. Pls do not compare yourself to your peers who easily got a 170 in first attempt. It is a difficult test and give yourself that compassion to crack it.
- It is crack able. It tests certain formulas etc that can be learnt and applied. Always remember that.
- Hardwork + PERSEVERANCE will take you far especially in the light of a frustrating score. Always have belief in your abilities and push yourself.
- Remember WHY are you doing this test and remind yourself every day. This was a huge motivating factor for me.
- It was more a mental test for me as you can see. Always always remember that when you see that score on the screen, you will be happy you didnāt give up. DO NOT GIVE UP and believe in your dreams. I promise you will get there.
- Pressure is a HUGE factor. I did well on my last attempt but i did not care. I just did what was muscle memory at that point. i had no pressure like the earlier attempts.
- My personal math tutor, I did 1-1 in person classes. Pls DM for contact.
- Greg mat for verbal ā use the quizlet flashcards, and do all the other vocab exercises on the website
- Manhattan 5 lb for quant
- ETS quant, verbal books
- TTP ā if you do not have access to a personal tutor and want a very comprehensive approach to math. I personally struggle with understanding math myself plus find it frustrating and hence chose a math tutor. I also need someone to constantly make me understand the same thing over and over in math. Skip for verbal IMP, Greg is much more efficient.
- Kaplan- very easy, good for base practise
- Barrons 800- also a great resource but in todays digital age, can be tedious to study from a physical book
- Magoosh- the videos are pretttty good, questions are a bit obtuse, good for understanding basic concepts

2022 I knew that this year I couldnāt screw up my applications. I decided in July itself to do whatever it takes to reach there.
Some tips.
- Attend all the webinars of the university. Basically do your due diligence. This sounds obvious but I had not done this prior. Study the website in and out, make notes (otherwise you can forget) and use this to show your passion for the school in the essay. Good research comes across very well.
- Speak to people in the course/alumni. Write a cold email and contact them through linkedin. I spoke to like 20+ people like this and you will be surprised how happy people are to help you. Ask about the college etc (questions included in my guide above)
- Contact some professors (Now only do this if you know what you are talking about and DO NOT ask them basic questions) Do your research on them and ask intelligent questions, introduce yourself etc. Their email is easily available on the college website
- Think from the perspective of admission officers. Why should they admit you? How do you stand out? Is your essay well researched? What are they looking for? Attend those webinars and ask them
- Always apply for some dream schools and push yourself
- Read some current academic books/journals on the subject you are applying for and make notes on key ideas.
- Have a research topic in mind and mention it in your essays. Again- not necessary but you need to understand that at masters/PHD level professors are at the end of the day looking for colleagues not thinking about sending you to industry. Think about how the world of academia functions. They only care about their SUBJECT.

Hello flying, I recently added on an ASEL rating to my existing PPL-Glider certificate. I am very happy and fortunate to be dual PPL rated as a young junior in high school. Here is my writeup on how flying gliders helped me with my ASEL transition.
My checkride with Elliot Crawford was scheduled on a Friday morning at 8:30am. I got to the FBO quite early around 7:30am, and sat there going over some of the notes that I had made and my XC Plan from KBDU to KCFO in my folder.
I had the following items ready for my oral:
He was satisfied with my thorough preflight, and we pulled the airplane out of the hangar. I offered to help him in, and he said he was good. Remember to treat him as a passenger who has never flown before (SAFETY). The airspace was fairly busy (due to unusually good weather). We did a cold start and I did the before taxi checklist and started off. We taxied to the runup area, I did my runup and we did a normal takeoff to the east from KBDU. I showed my noise abatement procedures knowledge and mentioned that we would have to deviate slightly from the XC route to abide by these procedures. I went through the north practice area (an area famous for being a zoo and the area where the recent fatal midair happened.) We had talked about our fears of this practice area beforehand and I made sure to make a radio call every minute as we were transitioning through.
My second checkpoint were some tall cell towers and he told me to break off the XC portion of the checkride and head towards the northeastern side of the practice area. As we were heading there we did all the hood time. First just straight and level, then he had me do some turns and climbs/descents in a turn. After that he did some unusual attitudes and decided that I was performing them well. We got to the practice area and he had me go through the airwork.
Slow flight (went well), power on stall (went well), steep turns (surprisingly went well, hit my own wake), and for the power off stall, it did not break as cleanly as he wanted it to. He had me do them again but this time pull more aggressively on the controls. He was satisfied with this. Just as I was getting comfortable with my flying, he pulled my engine and my engine āfailed.ā Luckily, I had noted a smaller lesser known private airstrip that I had just flown over, and he seemed impressed by my decision to slow down and make a better landing strip decision than to rush and land in some field. I was quite high so I decided to demonstrate a slip to get lower. I was still high and he tried to prompt me to join a ādownwindā and fly a pattern so I could lose a bit more altitude. I did start to do that, however last minute I changed my mind and just dumped 40 deg flaps and was able to get to a better altitude. I thought we were a tad bit low to fly a full pattern. It ended up working out and he deemed my engine failure satisfactory. After the checkride, he noted that he was impressed that I was able to āmake PIC-like decisionsā, regarding the simulated engine failure.
We initiated the go around once the strip was made and climbed a little to an altitude to do ground reference maneuvers. I selected a nice road with minimal houses and set up for a downwind entry for S-turns around a road. Started at 5,800ft and was able to maintain within 100feet of that until the end. I nearly busted 5,700ft but I verbalized it and attempted to correct it so he was okay with it. We climbed back up to 7,500ft and he pulled the āwe need to divert.ā He asked me where I wanted to divert, and I had been anticipating a diversion to KGXY. I told him so and he said āsorry, thereās a thunderstorm, where do you want to go?ā I then made the decision to go to KLMO, which I was a bit disappointed with, as KLMO is pretty high on my list of āairports I hate with a passion.ā
I guessed the heading we would have to turn and it ended up being only 2 degrees off, which he seemed impressed about. I went through the whole diversion spiel (heading, time to airport, frequencies, distance, gas), and he seemed impressed. He asked me if I wanted to do my landings at KLMO or back at KBDU. I obviously took this chance to avoid going anywhere near KLMO and went back to Boulder. We headed back to KBDU and he was impressed by my knowledge of the new noise abatement procedures, as well as my decision to do a right 360 for separation in the busy pattern. He also appreciated my vigilance when it comes to looking for traffic.
I entered on a 45 left downwind and the first landing was going to be a short field. I elected my aim point as the numbers and plopped the mains right on the numbers, perfectly on centerline. He was very impressed and it really upped my confidence. Full stop, taxied back and did a soft field takeoff. He called this āvery textbook and impressiveā and was satisfied. Next up was a soft field landing. I wasnāt quite able to nail this one as I did the short field, but Elliot was still satisfied. Taxied back for a short field takeoff and Elliot called this one ātextbookā as well. Next would be a normal landing, which was admittedly not my best landings but still passable and done well. We taxied back to the ramp and shutdown.
This is where I was most nervous, because he had not said anything in regards to passing or failing. I just stayed silent because I didnāt want to know. My CFI had just gotten back from a lesson with another student, and asked Elliot how I did. Elliot responded with āPassed, of course,ā very matter-of-factly. I felt the nerves subside and calmed down immediately. We went back to the FBO, printed out my temp certificate with my new privileges (Airplane Single Engine Land & Glider), and debriefed. He really did not have much to say. A few things that he was critical on were regarding straining fuel in the hangar, the mushy power off stall, and the S-turns. He also mentioned the only thing during the oral which I got tripped up on which was Mode A vs C vs S transponders. Other than that, he said he really liked my confidence in the cockpit, my loose grip on the yoke, and how I verbalized and briefed every single thing I did before I actually did it.
I was very happy to know that I was now a Private Pilot with both glider and ASEL privileges.
Some points of advice:
Financials: I have been very lucky in terms of money, where scholarships have paid for all my training so far including my glider certificate, as well as all my ASEL training. I also work at my flight school/FBO and so got a discount on my flying which helped me stretch those funds as far as possible. I came to every single lesson prepared and my CFIs praised me on my proactivity and "self-directedness". In my opinion, before every lesson you should tell your CFI what you want to do, instead of the other way around. This method works well because it minimizes the time spent with CFI and time spent repeating stuff, and you knock out all the requirements very efficiently.
I've got about $7k left in scholarships, plus $2k of my own savings. I am planning on pursuing my instrument rating eventually. My plan at the moment is to flying XCs at a cheaper school once a week until I have built up a majority of that 50 XC PIC. After that, I plan to really hit the IFR stuff in a more expensive airplane and using my access to a free Redbird sim to the max. My new goal is to get my instrument rating by fall 2023. I also want to focus on the glider side of things and hope to get my glider commercial as soon as I turn 18.

My checkride with Elliot Crawford was scheduled on a Friday morning at 8:30am. I got to the FBO quite early around 7:30am, and sat there going over some of the notes that I had made and my XC Plan from KBDU to KCFO in my folder.
I had the following items ready for my oral:
- Chart supplements for airports from KBDU-KCFO
- 6 different weather forecast maps from AWC and NOAA soaring forecast
- Printed out docs for the Preflight Brief and a doc I had made myself with weather info, NOTAMs, and TFRs
- Tabbed out FAAIM 2022
- PHAK 2016 (get a newer one)
- Denver sectional with XC flight plan and Cheyenne Sectional on my phone (Foreflight)
- W&B
- Pen/pencil
- Printed out 8710-1
He was satisfied with my thorough preflight, and we pulled the airplane out of the hangar. I offered to help him in, and he said he was good. Remember to treat him as a passenger who has never flown before (SAFETY). The airspace was fairly busy (due to unusually good weather). We did a cold start and I did the before taxi checklist and started off. We taxied to the runup area, I did my runup and we did a normal takeoff to the east from KBDU. I showed my noise abatement procedures knowledge and mentioned that we would have to deviate slightly from the XC route to abide by these procedures. I went through the north practice area (an area famous for being a zoo and the area where the recent fatal midair happened.) We had talked about our fears of this practice area beforehand and I made sure to make a radio call every minute as we were transitioning through.
My second checkpoint were some tall cell towers and he told me to break off the XC portion of the checkride and head towards the northeastern side of the practice area. As we were heading there we did all the hood time. First just straight and level, then he had me do some turns and climbs/descents in a turn. After that he did some unusual attitudes and decided that I was performing them well. We got to the practice area and he had me go through the airwork.
Slow flight (went well), power on stall (went well), steep turns (surprisingly went well, hit my own wake), and for the power off stall, it did not break as cleanly as he wanted it to. He had me do them again but this time pull more aggressively on the controls. He was satisfied with this. Some points of advice:
- Overprepare for the oral, watch a lot of youtube videos, and impress him with your extent of knowledge
- Print out maps from AWC and bring as many resources as possible, this shows him that you know where to find all the information.
- Call 1-800 WX BRIEF the night before and ask for a standard briefing. Call them again the morning of and ask for an abbreviated briefing. Ask for weather along your route of flight for the XC, and NOTAMS.
- Donāt be afraid to say you donāt know in the oral. However, make sure you know where to look for the answer.
- Talk to as many people as you can who have had Elliot for your checkride. This way you can get more intel as to what he expects and what he likes.
- Get the written done early (I had it done a year and a half early)
- Before every lesson, act like it is your checkride, prepare a short weather brief, and maybe even call 1800 WX BRIEF the morning of for an abbreviated briefing. Be very proactive in your studying, and study often
- Fake it till you make it. I was not at all confident in my flying skills before the checkride, and was honestly expecting a disapproval. However, I acted as if I knew I was going to pass. I believe āacting like PICā ups your chances of passing your checkride.
- Chair fly
- Verbalize every single maneuver, landing, turn, everything. There should hardly be a quiet moment in the cockpit. Even in cruise, you should be talking through what you plan to do.
- Fly as often as you can
- All in all, I believe that I overestimated the difficulty of the checkride and felt nervous for no reason. It is not as hard as you would expect and Elliot is a fair DPE who will pass you as long as you meet standards and show him that you have the knowledge

Hey flying
About 5-6 weeks ago I passed my PPL-Glider checkride, you can read the writeup here. I had planned to start my powered lessons in the C152 right away however due to wx and other issues I wasn't able to get my first powered flight in until about 4 weeks after (2 weeks ago).
In my first lesson, my CFI and I went over all the required items in the FARs before you can let a student solo. It was a long and exhausting flight but we did it and my CFI was impressed by my flying skills on my first lesson. The second lesson, we flew the pattern many times (I think I logged 16 landings in that one) and by my third lesson, I had already gotten the hang of landings.
According to my CFI, I was essentially ready to solo after my third lesson (5.1 hours), except for one thing. Comms. As I fly at an extremely busy delta with commercial jet traffic, military, and helicopter traffic, it was extremely difficult for my to get used to the SA and radio skills needed to operate at such a busy airport. As a glider pilot who flew at a small Golf airport with max 1-2 airplanes in the pattern at once, it was a huge and crazy jump to be hearing "Cessna 123, number 11, cleared touch and go" (yes that actually happened). It took me 2-3 more lessons to be declared okay on the comms by my CFI, and another week or so for the CO weather to cooperate.
This morning, my CFI gave me the okay to go and fly 3 patterns alone. I started up, got ground clearance, taxied to the runway at our busy airport, and as soon as I got into the air, I realized that the "first solo exhilaration" had not hit me at all. It felt like riding a bike, this time with an engine. I do not want to come off jaded in any way because I am truly grateful for this opportunity at a young age like mine, but it felt quite monotonous. Regardless, I did 5 patterns, looked at my watch, and realized that I forgot to stop at 3 lol. Asked tower for a full stop, taxied across the busy airport again, parked, tied down, went inside, and they cut off my shirttail for a second time!
In all, I would like to advise to any (especially young) aspiring pilots out there. Flying gliders first helps you a lot when it comes to soloing in the pattern quickly. I already knew how to fly and I just had to get used to a few new maneuvers, a different sight picture, and the biggest one for me was relearning radio communications.
I compiled a few things below that I was wondering if fellow glider pilots also experienced while learning how to fly powered:
TLDR: Soloed this morning after 6 lessons and about 9 hours of lessons. You could do it in less if you didn't suck like me at radios. GLIDERS HELP WITH LEARNING POWERED. It also made it hell of a lot cheaper than usual. I think I only used about $900 of my scholarship money to get to solo. That is about the same as a damn headset lmao.
PS Sorry if this is a little squirrely lol, it's a Friday night and I had a long week at school.

TLDR: Soloed this morning after 6 lessons and about 9 hours of lessons. You could do it in less if you didn't suck like me at radios. GLIDERS HELP WITH LEARNING POWERED. Hello Gliding!
I am happy to report that I nailed my PPL-glider checkride today (passed). My checkride was at KBDU with Elliot Crawford in the SGS 2-33. I thought I would do a writeup since there aren't many Glider writeups in here, hopefully it may help someone in the future. This is my first time doing this so it may be a little raggedy haha.
Elliot had three checkrides that day, I was the 2nd one, scheduled for 12pm. Due to the 1st checkride going a little bit overtime, I spent about 45-50 minutes waiting for him at the FBO where we would do the oral. From what my CFI told me, my flight portion would consist of a 3,000ft tow and then a rope break. However, the first checkride before me did not do a rope break, surprisingly. Instead, they did two 3,000ft tows and simulated a broken altimeter on the second one. This was very surprising and I am lucky that my CFI called me and informed me about it so I had an idea of what would happen.
Elliot showed up at the FBO with the first checkride applicant and had to take care of some IACRA stuff for them. This took about 15 minutes. I started my oral at around 12:25, and we started with the usual IACRA stuff which took ten or so minutes. This consisted mainly of signing various agreements and reviewing applications. Elliot will need to see your written exam paper, student pilot certificate, and a Photo ID. He will put you at ease right away, and although Elliot doesnāt joke too much, heās also not too uptight and will make conversations with you if you start it. We started the oral talking about private pilot privileges and recency/currency requirements. The conversation then went to weather, and he asked me about TAFs, MOSs, and the METAR. As well as the K Index, TI, and soaring forecasts. Make sure you know all the acronyms. Then, we talked about my planned cross country (KDBU-4CO2), and he quizzed me on the sectional. I was good at this, except for one of the symbols which I didnāt know. Remember, you can use the key, however this symbol was not on the key. I looked everywhere for it, the FARs, Glider Handbook, but couldnāt find it. I learned that you can check the User Guide, as outlined in small letters at the top of the key on the sectional. After this we went through some of the stuff that I got wrong on the written exam, stuff like airport markings and glider performance graphs. He then went back to the sectional and asked me questions about airspace and oxygen requirements. One that nearly got me was if I had to talk to the part time tower at KFNL (Class E to the surface) at 9,000ft MSL. I was nearly stumped, although I remembered out of nowhere that Class E to the surface means that you have to radio the part time tower 4nm out and when you are below 2500ft AGL. So the answer is no, you donāt have to talk to the tower, although you should. Make sure to also stress in your answers what is legal and what is safe. There are three possible answers to each question; the FAA answer, right answer, and wrong answer. He is looking for the FAA answer, and the right answer would be a bonus. After about an hour and a half of oral examination, he decided that I had passed the oral exam. At around 1:45, he asked me to give him a preflight briefing for our flight. After that we headed to the glider shack and I did a very thorough preflight. Make sure you follow the checklist to the tee. Repeat the emphasis item of positive exchange of controls, and make sure to drill all the acronyms like IMSAFE, SAFETY, PAVE, etc. He was satisfied with my thorough preflight, and we pulled the glider onto the runway. I offered to help him strap in, and he said he was good. Remember to treat him as a passenger who has never flown before (SAFETY). The airspace was fairly clear, and after the usual hand signals with the line guy, we were off. I had a good smooth takeoff, and lifted off the runway fairly quickly. I didnāt have to worry about wind, as the sky gods blessed me with incredible stable weather and essentially no wind. Remember your callouts. Always be on your feet for a rope break, although I did not end up doing one (kinda weird). The tow plane did the rudder waggle after which I responded with "airbrakes closed and no hot mic". After heading west above 6,300 MSL I did the box prop. Make sure to go slowly and pause at each corner. And donāt get confused when he calls it a ābox washā. He was satisfied with mine, and we proceeded to the slack line. He put slack in the line and I smoothly recovered. Almost immediately after this I got waved off by the tow plane and immediately released. I went straight into the clearing turn (do not forget those) and was headed west. I did a straight ahead stall (make sure to go full stick back) and turning stall with half spoilers (make sure you feel the buffet). After that I did a 90 deg left turn in slow flight, he was satisfied with all of these maneuvers. We went into a left 360 steep turn (make sure to adhere to PTS standards and donāt lose speed) and then immediately into right 360 steep turn. Make sure you keep an eye on altitude during all of this. Also, remember to clear before each maneuver. We were at about 6,500 at this point so I decided to enter the pattern. I made my radio call and looked at the windsock. I did FUSTALL and chose the speed of 55 mph. Make sure your airspeed doesnāt fluctuate. He wanted me to do a slip on downwind and then a precision landing. On the downwind I decided not to slip as I didnāt want to lose altitude and he seemed impressed by my ADM. Remember, you are the PIC. Act like one. I turned base, and then final, and all was well. I came in for my flare, touched down, and greased the landing, except I felt us skid as if we touched down with full brakes. I was confused but kept the skidding glider on the runway with excessive use of rudder. I closed the brakes as I thought I may have landed with full spoiler, but it still wouldnāt stop skidding. We came to a stop very quickly, and we jumped out to investigate. My first thought was that maybe the brakes had locked somehow, or that we had a flat tire. Turns out that we had suffered a flat tire. This was astonishing as during the preflight the tire was fine, and I landed softly too. We got the line guys at Mile High to tow the glider back and at that point we had two options. Discontinue and do the remaining maneuvers (emergency, slip, precision landing) at another time, or take N17939 (the other 2-33 with no brakes). I believed that I could still accomplish the precision landing in 939, and wanted to take advantage of the unusually stable air that day to finish the checkride, so I opted for the latter option. He again seemed impressed with my reasoning and the fact that I was assertive and confident in my decision. He agreed with my decision and we headed to 939 to do a preflight and then pulled it onto the runway. I mentioned the differences in handling for this glider and that I was aware of them. In my mind, I knew that this flight would have an emergency. I did not know if it would be a rope break or not, so I was ready just in case. We got to about 7,300 and he told me to release. I did a clearing turn again and then he notified me that my emergency would be a faulty altimeter. He made me jumble up the altimeter so that I could only eyeball my height. This is not a problem as you should have landmarks and sight pictures burned into your brain for the pattern anyway. I entered the pattern high purposefully and did FUSTALL and radio calls. I turned downwind and performed a slip well. He was impressed by the way I judged my altitude. I told him while flying that I saw a powered aircraft on itās downwind, which meant that that altitude had to be 6,300ft (pattern alt). I was above that aircraft, which meant I was high. He liked my reasoning and felt that I made good use of clues in the environment around me. I was able to judge my pattern using angles and sight pictures, and was able to do a stable approach and greased the landing again. Since I was flying a glider with no brakes, I had to touch down earlier than normal to ensure that I stopped in time. Thankfully I was able to do just that, and he seemed very impressed that I was able to accomplish the precision landing in a glider with no brakes, with a faulty altimeter, and that I had to perform a slip in the downwind. After we came to a stop, he opened the door and said āLetās go inside so we can debrief and print out your temporary certificate!ā I was happy to know that I had passed and was officially a Private Pilot-Glider.
Some points of advice:
My plans after this are to attain the CAP Glider Pilot rating on my wing's ASK21, and stay current in gliders so that I can fly pax. I will be jumping into ASEL add-on training right away (first lesson is next weekend) and flying the C152 at KBJC. I am also aiming to get my glider CPL at 18. I am incredibly happy to have been able to achieve this at the age of 16, and none of this would be possible without me receiving a $6k scholarship and tons of support from my awesome CFI and Wings Over The Rockies Museum and Jeppessen Foundation. I am also very grateful for AOPA and EAA support through scholarships which I will be using for my ASEL.

We went into a left 360 steep turn (make sure to adhere to PTS standards and donāt lose speed) and then immediately into right 360 steep turn. Make sure you keep an eye on altitude during all of this. Also, remember to clear before each maneuver. We were at about 6,500 at this point so I decided to enter the pattern. I made my radio call and looked at the windsock. I did FUSTALL and chose the speed of 55 mph. Make sure your airspeed doesnāt fluctuate. He wanted me to do a slip on downwind and then a precision landing. On the downwind I decided not to slip as I didnāt want to lose altitude and he seemed impressed by my ADM. Remember, you are the PIC. Act like one. I turned base, and then final, and all was well. I came in for my flare, touched down, and greased the landing, except I felt us skid as if we touched down with full brakes. I was confused but kept the skidding glider on the runway with excessive use of rudder. I closed the brakes as I thought I may have landed with full spoiler, but it still wouldnāt stop skidding. We came to a stop very quickly, and we jumped out to investigate. My first thought was that maybe the brakes had locked somehow, or that we had a flat tire. Turns out that we had suffered a flat tire. This was astonishing as during the preflight the tire was fine, and I landed softly too. We got the line guys at Mile High to tow the glider back and at that point we had two options. Discontinue and do the remaining maneuvers (emergency, slip, precision landing) at another time, or take N17939 (the other 2-33 with no brakes). I believed that I could still accomplish the precision landing in 939, and wanted to take advantage of the unusually stable air that day to finish the checkride, so I opted for the latter option. He again seemed impressed with my reasoning and the fact that I was assertive and confident in my decision. He agreed with my decision and we headed to 939 to do a preflight and then pulled it onto the runway. I mentioned the differences in handling for this glider and that I was aware of them. In my mind, I knew that this flight would have an emergency. I did not know if it would be a rope break or not, so I was ready just in case. We got to about 7,300 and he told me to release. I did a clearing turn again and then he notified me that my emergency would be a faulty altimeter. He made me jumble up the altimeter so that I could only eyeball my height. This is not a problem as you should have landmarks and sight pictures burned into your brain for the pattern anyway. I entered the pattern high purposefully and did FUSTALL and radio calls. I turned downwind and performed a slip well. He was impressed by the way I judged my altitude. I told him while flying that I saw a powered aircraft on itās downwind, which meant that that altitude had to be 6,300ft (pattern alt). I was above that aircraft, which meant I was high. He liked my reasoning and felt that I made good use of clues in the environment around me. I was able to judge my pattern using angles and sight pictures, and was able to do a stable approach and greased the landing again. Since I was flying a glider with no brakes, I had to touch down earlier than normal to ensure that I stopped in time. Thankfully I was able to do just that, and he seemed very impressed that I was able to accomplish the precision landing in a glider with no brakes, with a faulty altimeter, and that I had to perform a slip in the downwind. After we came to a stop, he opened the door and said āLetās go inside so we can debrief and print out your temporary certificate!ā I was happy to know that I had passed and was officially a Private Pilot-Glider.
Some points of advice:
- Overprepare for the oral, watch a lot of youtube videos, read everything in the binder, and impress him with your extent of knowledge
- Print out maps from AWC and bring as many resources as possible, this shows him that you know where to find all the information.
- Call 1-800 WX BRIEF the night before specifying that you are a glider, and ask for a standard briefing. Call them again the morning of and ask for an abbreviated briefing. Ask for weather along your route of flight for the XC
- Donāt be afraid to say you donāt know in the oral. However, make sure you know where to look for the answer though.
- Talk to as many people as you can who have had Elliot for your checkride. This way you can get more intel as to what he expects and what he likes.
- Get the written done early
- Before every lesson, act like it is your checkride, prepare a short weather brief, and maybe even call 1800 WX BRIEF the morning of for an abbreviated briefing. Be very proactive in your studying, and study often
- Make conversation with Elliot
- Chair fly
- Use the simulator as much as you can (This was a Mach 0.1 Sim)
- Fly as often as you can
- All in all, I believe that I overestimated the difficulty of the checkride and felt nervous for no reason. It is not as hard as you would expect and Elliot is a fair DPE who will pass you as long as you meet standards and show him that you have the knowledge
My plans after this are to attain the CAP Glider Pilot rating on my wing's ASK21, and stay current in gliders so that I can fly pax. I will be jumping into ASEL add-on training right away (first lesson is next weekend) and flying the C152 at KBJC. I am also aiming to get my glider CPL at 18. I am incredibly happy to have been able to achieve this at the age of 16, and none of this would be possible without me receiving a $6k scholarship and tons of support from my awesome CFI and Wings Over The Rockies Museum and Jeppessen Foundation. I am also very grateful for AOPA and EAA support through scholarships which I will be using for my ASEL.
