CPU socket bent (LGA 1151)
I got a mobo (tuf gaming h370) with a cpu (i5 8400) for free a while ago, few hours ago I thought I would put in the cpu to keep the socket closed and safe from dust while I save up enough to complete the pc build, but I accidentally slipped my finger and got ONE pin bent. Unfortunately, I don't have any hardware or anything to test it. Before I went thru the effort to try and bent it back, I want to know if it's worth the time and effort, or I could just leave it be. Here's a photo of the exact pin of the socket that's bent.

2024.05.14 13:59 SehNett Protest to Warner Bros.

Hello everybody. I have a serious speech for you. The fact, that we (Global players) won’t get the outfit voting, disappointed me. And I have been observing this kind of attitude towards us from developers for quite a long time. We are constantly deprived of everything possible. The developers only demand money from us and do not give anything in return. I think this shouldn't continue. I propose to organize a protest towards Warner Brothers, namely: give them a 1 star in the App Store or Play Market and write your complaints in the review; Write your complaints in feedback; Spread this call wherever you can. Maybe this way we will achieve justice. We don't have to put up with this!
I’m writing here an example for your review as I’ve written: The developers have absolutely no respect for their players. They just demand money from us and give nothing in return. There is no season content, there are no normal costumes, there is no choice of costumes that you might like, there is no honest matching. But the donation function to the game works perfectly. I'm disappointed, Warner Brothers.

2024.05.14 08:28 UsefulPoem5030 Insurance payout question - Redundancy

Hi, My Dad died recently and he was directly employing 2 carers (he was in a wheelchair) at time of death. Legally on his death, the two carers are due statutory redundancy.
He had Carer Insurance which provides coverage as follows: "The policy will not pay more than: £2,000 per employee or a maximum of £4,000 if more than one employee is made redundant."
However they will only pay this out after money in his 'direct payment' bank account is accounted for - essentially a bank account that the government paid into to support him directly employing carers.
The two employees are due £8000 and £3000 respectively in redundancy and the bank account has £8400 in it. Therefore there is a shortfall of £2600.
The insurance company will only agree to pay out £2000 as it says there is enough money to cover the first employees redundancy in full. This seems like a generous way to calculate it.
Would anyone else have interpreted their terms as meaning they would pay out any shortfall in full for the combined redundancy due of up to £4000 total for my situation?
Based in Wales.

2024.05.14 08:14 icbabruhh SRH then and now

Needless to remind people of the good old Deccan Chargers days. I was young and didn't follow cricket at that time. My dad would always watch it, so I would catch glimpses of CSK playing in 2011 and 2012 times. Soon, I had an interest and wanted to support a relatively unknown team, or an underdog if you will. In 2013 with SRH being announced, I wanted to properly support a brand new team. I was still learning to understand the game; I was 15 at the time. Loved watching Steyn and just always loved watching good bowling more than batting. Of course, I enjoy the batting powerhouse we have become. But throughout this journey of being an SRH fan, I have noticed the love affair we have had for Aussies and Sri Lankans in our squad. Gilchrist leading DC to a title, then the great Sanga leading us to the playoffs in our first season as SRH. Perera's all-round show. David Warner in 2016 leading us to a title when RCB were cruising the chase. Who could forget Ben Cutting's best all-round performance in a final. Yuvi striking like crazy in that game. Bhuvi defending 18 runs off the final over by conceding just 10!
Now fast forward to 2024, we have David Warner's role split into 2. The duo of Cummins with captaincy and Warner 2.0 batting with Travis. And should we play a final like this again, maybe even against RCB, we'll have a similar squad. We have Nitish who has risen, and dare I say may even be our Ben Cutting with all-round stellar show we have seen from him thus far, not quite up to Ben's level but still. I know before I wanted Samad to be our Ben Cutting, but I think Nitish is more suited for that because he can bowl too, gives us 2 or 3 overs. Bhuvi is, of course, still with us, regaining his confidence, just like the 2016 Bhuvi. We have Yuvi's presence again through Abhi. Bipul Sharma, left-arm spinner, we now have Shahbaz. We have quite a few upgrades now for our wicket-keeping in Klaasen, 6 hitter in Samad (once he regains his confidence), Nattu who is reliable at the death, Pace train in Umran, and a genuine spin bowling option in Vijayakanth, the Sri Lankan flair coming back. Few interesting similarities about Vijayakanth is that he's relatively unknown like Mustafizur was back in 2016 and in 2018 we had a spinner that performed superbly for us, you know the name... Could it all be coming together for us? Could he be our missing piece, especially on a slow Chepauk track? Could Mayank play an anchor role like Dhawan and redeem himself? Time will tell.
Of course, it would have been nice to give Glen Phillips a try, and who knows, maybe he's our trump card? Maybe Cummins and Vettori are planning something we just don't know yet, or they are happy with the setup we have now. But there's yet another similarity if Glen Phillips is to sit out... remember in 2016 we had Trent Boult, Kane Williamson, and even Eoin Morgan sitting on the bench! Any other team, they would have been a regular in the 11! We insisted on Fizz, we insisted on Ben Cutting and Moises. Did it work out? No, not really, other than Ben Cutting; the other two had an average game. And remember, we won! We WON the final! Not sure if there is a certain luck aspect associated here but in 2016 both Kiwis did not play and in 2018 when we had a kiwi playing despite his amazing 700+ season, our title hopes wasn't to be. Another luck aspect to think about is of course the jersey, SA20 back to back winners, Sunrisers Eastern Cape.
I'm perhaps getting a bit too ahead of myself thinking of a final, but the fact of the matter is we have done so well thus far because it has been Cummins and Vettori's team through and through. They are sticking to their guts and saying this is what we are doing. Mayank, Tripathi, Sundar, Umran, Jansen, and Markram, our former captain, half the side that played in the 2022 season, dropped! They have good reasons for it, and that's okay. Just trust them! We were the underdogs at the start of the season once again, just like we were in 2016. THIS is our key. No one sees us coming; people still don't rate us though we have shown the world how T20 batting is done. I want us to be the underdogs; I want us to keep surprising; I want us to be the calm and composed fans that we have prided ourselves to be. Let's not become toxic, it was never our style. Please don't abuse the players or foul mouth other teams. Appreciate and enjoy them. Even if we lose both games and we don't qualify, I'm okay with that, same with winning the cup. Whatever happens SRH forever! We as the fans have had a season to remember for the ages.
Thank you, Cummins, for everything! All the best for the remaining games and playoffs should we make it. You are going to T20 World Cup as a T20 bowler when people doubted your abilities in the shortest format after picking you at the auctions. What a season you have had and lifted the entire fanbase's emotions up and carried us to the peak of entertainment and happiness. Thank you so much!

Be on the lookout for the guards there specifically the tall African American mmanager. Very close minded and homophobic. He looks everywhere except your face when talking to you. He is the one with no beard. He lies and doesn't care about the purpose for what the shelter was created. Be on the lookout he's a time bomb and plays the race game. Which in my opinion is ignorance.
UPDATE I HAVE A KIDNEY INFECTION AND I HAVE TO GO TO THE RESTROOM EVERY 10 OR 15 MINUTES THIS MANAGER AND SOME STAFF INFORMED ME I CAN'T GO TO THE RESTROOM. I HAD TO GO ON MYSELF AND THEY HAD ME GET HUMILIATED. I'M IN THE EMERGENCY ROOM AT THE MOMENT WITH SEVERE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE AND RECOVERING FROM HAVING A MAJOR ANXIETY ATTACK. DO YOU THINK MONEY FROM THE CITY SHOULD BE SPENT ON SHELTERS THAT BELITTLE THE HOMELESS COMMUNITY THAT ARE TRYING TO GET ON THEIR FEET. I DON'T DRINK OR DO DRUGS. IT'S VERY UNFAIR AND I THINK WE SHOULD ALL DO OUR PARTS AND LET OUR ELECTED OFFICIALS BE AWARE OF THE SITUATIONS THAT OCCUR AT SOME OF THE SHELTERS IN OUR CITIES. THE SHELTER IS LOCATED IN THE CITY OF SANTA ANA NEAR WARNER AVE AND YALE STREET.

2024.05.14 07:42 THEREALOFFICALCAFE I think I’ve figured out how all the shorts should be released

There should be a collection called “The Complete Looney Tunes” released on 4K home media.
It would contain 15 discs.
Each disc would start with a context set up, much like in the Golden Collection, and Walt Disney Treasures. Explaining why hiding shorts with taboo subject matter is bad, and it’s a benefit to see these films.
Discs 1-10 would have all the classic shorts, 100 per disc. Each short would be fully restored from the original prints, and each would contain either an introduction to the short given by an animation historian, and/or a bonus audio commentary to accompany.
Disc 11 would contain all of the material that isn’t considered classic era, but was produced during its run (snafu, live action shorts, propaganda pieces, some pink panther shorts, etc.)
Disc 12 would consist of all of the feature films, including the compilation films. From “The Bugs Bunny-Road Runner Movie”, to “Space Jam: A New Legacy” (assuming any more movies get scrapped).
Disc 13 would be compiled of modern Looney Tunes material. Definite inclusions would be all the actual shorts produced after the golden age up to the 2010’s. As far as television material, this could be full series or selected episodes, but it would be more of a supplementary disc to show how the characters have evolved since the end of the classic era. The 3D animated shorts using the voice of Mel Blanc would also be included herein.
Disc 14 would be a collection of miscellaneous material like advertisements, cameos in other media, classic TV material, pencil tests, storyboards, and a selection of side by side comparisons of the recolored versions of original black and white shorts. There would also be an emphasis on finding archival footage from the vaults and restoring it to the best of their ability.
Disc 15 would be a full length documentary about the history of Looney Tunes. Something like The Merrie History Of Looney Tunes, but upscaled to Hollywood quality. It would also include the Documentary specifically about Mel Blanc, “The Man of 1000 Voices”.
Included in the box set would be a collection of rare art replicas, and a hardcover book listing everything included in the set. As a bonus, there would be a CD of famous musical cues from Carl Stalling, and songs from Mel Blanc as the characters.
I know this is probably just a pipe dream, but with the way the brass at Warner Brothers has been treating this franchise recently, especially with how much of the library has been removed from MAX, it’s really time that we get a full collection of these shorts be them amazing or terrible, just so they actually have a place that they can’t be tampered with.

2024.05.14 07:20 thinklok Theory about RCB vs DC match and Pant's suspension due to over-rate

Theory about RCB vs DC match and Pant's suspension due to over-rate
was real sad after that match and didn't sleep good for 2 days now but this thing is bothering me so much, maybe I'll make a video on this for YT because it's keep replaying in my head. Over-Rate suspension is not something happen to other teams. I remember RCB did their 2nd over rate offence last year but never got to 3rd offense even after crossing the time limit again and again. I think this rule was deliberately used against us because we're stronger than RCB if Pant would've been in middle order and we would've had a settled line-up so no place for Warner and Kushagra in that line-up and we could've won that match because RCB clearly struggled after a great start of 110 in first 10 overs.
My theory is that there hasn't been an IPL season where none of RCB,CSK and MI never reached the play-offs and they wanted at least one of them in play-offs for viewership. If DC have won RCB game and then LSG game then the table would've settled 5 days before and no excitement till the last match. They wanted to make RCB vs CSK the biggest match of IPL where last team would've been decided. Their only way to make this IPL more exciting was to let DC burn and they did that. If Parth Jindal ever encounters this post then he should question BCCI and whole league on it.
If there's an issue of over-rate then make that rule crystal clear that whatever happen but the match should conclude by 11 PM or 11:30 PM and it's applicable for every team. That KKR vs MI game concluded after 12:30 in midnight so broadcasters have no issue, if they had an issue then that rain delayed match should've been of 10 overs instead than of 16 overs. That absense of Pant costed not just a game but surely play-offs and I feel disheartened and depressed after that. I want Pant to win world cup and play match winning knocks so that he become our country's pride and a superstar so that our team doesn't have to face this bias

What if after the merger they combined similar business
1) AOL web portal, Dial Up Internet, RoadRunner Internet (Time Warner) Time Warner Cable, gradually moving to just Cable TV & Internet along with the AOL site.
2) Let AOL handle everything online like websites, online media and so fourth.
3) Film and TV media as one group
4) Publishing as group
5) Music as a group
Before that not splitting off any brands or companies.

2024.05.14 04:07 Great_Actuator_9784 Dancer Patricia Douglas Sues Fixers Eddie Mannix of MGM after party 'casting call' and Other Fixers

Article on Other Fixers in Hollywood - Twigger Warnings: threats, fixers, SA
Patricia Douglas was not a name like Loretta Young, and that’s the way she wanted it. The young dancer ended up in Hollywood only because her mother harbored dreams of designing movie costumes.
As David Stenn wrote in Vanity Fair, “she did not drink, date, or dream of film fame.” But she had appeared in musicals for Warner Brothers and Columbia Pictures, which is how she came across an MGM casting call in 1937. While she believed it was for another dancing role in a movie, it was actually for a party.
The party was part of a five-day sales convention to celebrate MGM’s big year. This particular bash, according to the convention schedule obtained by Vanity Fair, was ...
After Douglas arrived at the studio-owned “ranch” with 120 other dancers in short cowgirl outfits, she slowly realized she’d been bused over as a plaything for drunk, lecherous businessmen. One of them was especially interested in her. Douglas found David Ross creepy from the start, and tried to dodge him by escaping to the ladies’ room. But when she reentered the party, he and another man, by her recollection, held her down and poured liquor down her throat. She broke free to throw up in the bathroom and stumble outside for fresh air. It was there that Ross found her, dragged her to his car, and raped her.
Douglas was taken to the hospital and examined by a doctor practically owned by MGM. None of the cops at the party bothered to file a criminal report. Undeterred, she filed a complaint against Ross with the Los Angeles district attorney’s office and took her story to the press.
Mannix, who had been at the party, leapt to defend MGM.
He systematically strong-armed potential witnesses into slandering Douglas.
She was painted as a lying lush, despite the fact that she never drank.
Some who had previously given statements supporting her claims would not repeat them in court. Her criminal case failed, and MGM also succeeded in stalling her civil suit (which named Mannix).
She tried one more time, only for her own lawyer to betray her. There was no other recourse, and her story was effectively erased for decades.
When later asked about Douglas, Mannix supposedly joked, “We had her killed.”
Strickling and Mannix’s fixer days ended in the 1960s.
Another Fixer, Otash:
Due to Otash’s reputation, his sensational stories were often questioned—sometimes by the man himself. Although Otash told associates he rushed to Lana Turner’s home the night her boyfriend Johnny Stompanato was stabbed by her daughter Cheryl Crane, and even removed the knife from the body, Otash dismissed the story in a 1991 interview. “Beverly Hills police chief Clinton Anderson once accused me of..."
**They claimed Mannix read every telegraph and all communications into/out of MGM Studios.**

2024.05.13 22:14 Mooshroomdude250 A Universal/Warner Bros. Meger.... How will it affect Cartoon Network?

Recently, I saw a post regarding how a WB/NBCU merger would be better than the Disney/Fox merger (and honestly, I agree! I'd take the WB/NBCU merger over Disney/Fox and ESPECIALLY Sony/Paramount the latter of which would likely get punched in the face by anti-trust laws since Sony owns Columbia/TriStaScreen Gems).
Anyhow, one question I had was "How would a Universal/Warner Bros. merger affect Cartoon Network and its sister services (Boomerang, Adult Swim, Cartoonito, Toonami, Discovery Family, and now, Universal Kids)?"
So TLDR:
How does this sound? Let me know in the comments! Feel free to share what you would think is the best for you in this scenario.

2024.05.13 21:42 HD-MOVIE-SOURCE Dune: Part Two (2024) 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Review - HD MOVIE SOURCE

Dune: Part Two (2024) 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Review - HD MOVIE SOURCE
Dune 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Review

VIDEO QUALITY

Dune: Part Two is an excellent-looking movie on 4K Blu-ray! Placing bonus content on the same disc was a concern of mine, considering disc space, and considering the film's length. However, encoding quality is high. Dune 2 is also a cleaner-looking movie than Dune 1. There is a light layer of grain, and film grain does resolve well. Film grain is more visible in low light shots vs brighter day shots. I think the film grain level is just right. Enough of it to make it look filmic, and enough to make it so grain haters really shouldn't be bothered by it.
Ringing is non-existent, which is great, and has an excellent level of detail. The movie is also significantly brighter than the first movie. With these improvements from the first movie to this one, my assumption is that the scanning to film and back to digital process has been improved. Or, at the very least refined. They may have found that they lost light output converting to film and back, and they've found a way to augment that. Likewise, with film grain appearing tighter, I wonder if a different film stock or variation could have been used. I don't personally know, however, the entire look that Dune 2 has, is much improved over Dune Part One, and I really appreciate that. Because I wasn't a fan of how Dune 1 looked. I didn't like the muddy film grain that they used.
No artifacts or breakdown are visible. A 100GB Disc was used for this encode, and it's a pleasure to watch from start to finish. I didn't think that WB were capable of producing encodes this good, but I give them a lot of respect for this transfer. It shows me that when they want to produce greatness, they can. I'd like to see all of their releases look this good. So, I'm extremely happy.
https://preview.redd.it/mcptnzazx80d1.png?width=3840&format=png&auto=webp&s=cc752441da43c7292acfdeb5a8d58d86dac151c1

AUDIO QUALITY

The Dolby Atmos mix is spectacular! Dune: Part Two is a reference disc from start to finish. It is mixed perfectly, and the level balance is excellent. I thought Dune 1 was a reference disc, but this actually goes some and improves on the first one in terms of balance. Dialog and clarity are far better. It's balance between the sounds around and the dialog are perfect. Even the opening monolog of Part One vs Part Two, the balance is so much better in Part Two. The sound design team have either upgraded the way they do things or have balanced their own studios in a far better way to get this mix sounding this good. If music is playing, you can still hear the sounds of the desert around them. Dialog, again, is clearly discernable even in complex scenes. Sound and video get better over time, and from an audio point of view this mix is on a whole-nother level.
The bass is at reference levels and at times becomes scary. Because the power of the bass is tremendous and is used at the right times. When massive machines are landing, you feel it, and you feel the weight of the machines landing. When copters are banking, my room inflates with massive bass. I've actually had to start fixing vibrations in my room because the bass go so low and so deep with this movie. When you reach this level of bass, I always say to people, I hope you have at least 2 subwoofers. As always, the more subs you have the smoother and cleaner sounding bass you will have. I currently use two Monolith, 13 inch THX subs, and I'm at the point now where I don't actually want more bass. So, if you're a bass-head like me then this movie will provide you with everything that you could ever want. It's not overdone, I think it's just balanced absolutely perfectly. There's never a point where I thought, hmmm, that didn't sound right. Whereas, by comparison, Part One, does have scenes where I thought it actually could have sounded better. So, I'm blown away with the balance, and the quality of the bass.
Another thing I'd like to point out is the audio directivity, it's superb! I think it might require multiple listens and watches to really appreciate everything. There are so many subtleties to the sound. Sounds can move from center to the right speaker, but it's like the sound floats. The audio sounds like it's not coming from a speaker but a point in space. The use of heights and surrounds is involving, and multi-layered. However, it's true, there isn't a scene like in Dune Part One, where Paul gets blasted by the sandstorm and you hear particles of sand move through the room. It doesn't use sound isolation in that way. But creates these layers upon layers of sound to create a 3D world. It's the small things that add to this. Whisps of sand in the back left surround, a flutter in the front right to rear height channels, all sound incredible. Whatever the process for getting the balance like this, THIS IS IT! Because this is sound quality and balance that I've never heard before in a Dolby Atmos system. Other movies do and can sound flashier. They use a more obvious sound design and play audio pinball. Dune: Part Two doesn't do this, and I don't think it needs to, to make great sound. It's the layering of all of these sounds that creates this believable world. I think Dune 2 will be at the number 1 spot for the best sounding movie of the year. This is a masterclass in sound design and pushes the boundary up in what can be done with audio in 2024.

OVERALL

Overall, a stunning movie. Warner Bros. They really stepped up for this release, and I'm extremely happy with what they've achieved here on 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray. 4K Blu-ray is in a position where, some may only buy fan favorites on disc, and maybe stream others. Dune: Part Two is the one that requires a disc to see and hear it at its best. Simply having uncompressed audio on a movie of this caliber is almost mandatory. The increased dynamic range, the power, the bass, and subtleties of this sound isn't possible when streaming. It's a release that can take full advantage of a great home theater setup. This release was made to be experienced in the best way possible, on a 4K Disc. It's releases like this that make me realize why I still buy movies on Disc. Because this experience isn't possible on a streamer. Streaming is great for casual stuff, but when it comes to getting the most out of a movie, that's what 4K Discs are made for. This is the reason to own a 4K Ultra HD Blu-ray Player!
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED! - A Must Own For Fans That Crave The Best!

2024.05.13 21:40 DAudiA47 Paid off 2010 Audi A4 2.0 Oil Leak Repair vs Financing a new car

Hey you guys, I could really use some advice. I've had my 2010 Audi for about 7 years now and I just paid it off last year. Unfortunately I got the common oil leak issue and had ton deal with a shitty mechanic a few months ago who apparently only temporarily fixed the issue. Now im faced with a $7,000 bill to basically rebuild the engine and replace my turbo as well. Im thinking long-term this would be a great investment to just keep maintaining the car and to avoid financing a new one which in the end would cost me more. I really love this car, its my first Audi, and it's been good to me overall. Should I continue to invest in her or get rid of her? Below is the breakdown of the bill 🥲 :

2024.05.13 20:06 SanderSo47 Part 1

As Reddit doesn't allow posts to exceed 40,000 characters, Eastwood's edition had to be split into two parts because his whole career cannot be ignored. The second part will be posted tomorrow.

Here's a new edition of "Directors at the Box Office", which seeks to explore the directors' trajectory at the box office and analyze their hits and bombs. I already talked about a few, and as I promised, it's Clint Eastwood's turn.
Eastwood was a troublemaker at school, and he had a bunch of odd jobs such as lifeguard, paper carrier, grocery clerk, forest firefighter, and golf caddy. In 1951, he was drafted into the United States Army during the Korean War and was discharged two years later. Through this, he got into contact with a Hollywood representative, who got him into acting classes and started his acting career. He got his start by starring in the hit show Rawhide, but he said he was exhausted by the experience. This caught the attention of some film producers and he decided to act in films directed by the then-unknown Sergio Leone. His career was on the rise, and then he got the chance to make his directorial debut.
From a box office perspective, how reliable was he to deliver a box office hit?
That's the point of this post. To analyze his career.

It should be noted that as he started his career in the 1970s, some of the domestic grosses here will be adjusted by inflation. The table with his highest grossing films, however, will be left in its unadjusted form, as the worldwide grosses are more difficult to adjust.

Play Misty for Me (1971)

"The scream you hear may be your own!"
His directorial debut. It stars Eastwood, Jessica Walter and Donna Mills, and follows a radio disc jockey being stalked by an obsessed female fan.
Before his colleague Irving Leonard died, he and Eastwood had discussed the idea of producing a film that was to give Eastwood the artistic control he desired, and his debut as a director. Eastwood said he was ready, "I stored away all the mistakes I made and saved up all the good things I learned, and now I know enough to control my own projects and get what I want out of actors."
The film was a huge success for Eastwood, and it also received positive reviews. So far, his directorial career was off to a great start.

High Plains Drifter (1973)

"They'd never forget the day he drifted into town."
His second film. The film stars Eastwood, Verna Bloom and Mariana Hill, and follows a mysterious stranger who metes out justice in a corrupt frontier mining town.
Eastwood reportedly liked the offbeat quality of the film's original nine-page proposal and approached Universal with the idea of directing it, which would make it his first directed Western. The screenplay was inspired by the real-life murder of Kitty Genovese in Queens in 1964, which eyewitnesses reportedly stood by and watched. Holes in the plot were filled in with black humor and allegory, influenced by Sergio Leone.
It was well received, and the film even surpassed Play Misty for Me at the box office. Eastwood was just going up.

Breezy (1973)

"Her name is Breezy."
His third film. It stars William Holden and Kay Lenz, and follows the relationship between a middle-aged real estate agent and a young hitchhiker.
This was his first directed film without starring on it. And his lack of presence certainly hurt the film; it received mixed reviews and flopped at the box office.

The Eiger Sanction (1975)

"His lifeline, held by the assassin he hunted."
His fourth film. Based on the novel by Trevanian, the film stars Eastwood, George Kennedy, Vonetta McGee, and Jack Cassidy. It follows Jonathan Hemlock, an art history professor, mountain climber, and former assassin once employed by a secret government agency, who is blackmailed into returning to his deadly profession for one last mission.
The film received mixed reactions for its writing, and it wasn't a box office success either.

The Outlaw Josey Wales (1976)

"An army of one."
His fifth film. Based on the novel Gone to Texas by Forrest Carter, it stars Eastwood, Chief Dan George, Sondra Locke, Bill McKinney and John Vernon. The film tells the story of Josey Wales, a Missouri farmer whose family is murdered by Union militia during the Civil War. Driven to revenge, Wales joins a Confederate guerrilla band and makes a name for himself as a feared gunfighter. After the war, all the fighters in Wales' group except for him surrender to Union soldiers, but the Confederates end up being massacred. Wales becomes an outlaw and is pursued by bounty hunters and Union soldiers as he tries to make a new life for himself.
Eastwood was fascinated by the novel and he bought the film rights, hoping to star on the film. He got Philip Kaufman involved as screenwriter and possible director, but left after disagreeing with Eastwood in the material adapted to the screen. Kaufman insisted on filming with a meticulous attention to detail, which caused disagreements with Eastwood, not to mention the attraction the two shared towards Locke and apparent jealousy on Kaufman's part in regard to their emerging relationship. This caused Eastwood to take over as the director. Kaufman's firing angered the DGA, as he did most of the pre-production, and sanctioning a $60,000 fine. This resulted in the Director's Guild passing a new rule, known as "the Eastwood Rule", which prohibits an actor or producer from firing the director and then personally taking on the director's role.
The film received critical acclaim, and in subsequent years, is ranked among Eastwood's greatest films. It was also a huge success at the box office, doubling his previous highest grossing film. It was also one of the few Western films to receive critical and commercial success in the 1970s at a time when the Western was thought to be dying as a major genre in Hollywood.

The Gauntlet (1977)

"The man in the middle of..."
His sixth film. It stars Eastwood, Sondra Locke, Pat Hingle, William Prince, Bill McKinney, and Mara Corday. It follows a down-and-out cop who falls in love with a prostitute, to whom he is assigned to escort from Las Vegas to Phoenix for her to testify against the mob.
While it received mixed reviews, it became another box office success for Eastwood, becoming his now highest grossing film.

Bronco Billy (1980)

"The most outrageous of 'em all."
His seventh film. The film stars Eastwood and Sondra Locke, and focuses on the financially-struggling owner of a traditional Wild West show and his new assistant.
It became another critical and commercial success for Eastwood, who referred to the film as one of his most affable shoots of his career.

Firefox (1982)

"The most devastating killing machine ever built... his job... steal it!"
His eighth film. Based on the novel by Craig Thomas, it stars Eastwood, Freddie Jones and David Huffman. The Soviets have developed a revolutionary new jet fighter, called "Firefox". Naturally, the British are worried that the jet will be used as a first-strike weapon, as rumors say that the jet is undetectable on radar. They send ex-Vietnam War pilot Mitchell Gant on a covert mission into the Soviet Union to steal the Firefox.
The film received mixed reviews, but it earned almost $47 million, becoming Eastwood's highest grossing title as director.

Honkytonk Man (1982)

"The boy is on his way to becoming a man. The man is on his way to becoming a legend."
His ninth film. It's based on the novel by Clancy Carlile, and it stars Eastwood and his son Kyle. It follows Red Stovall, a country music singer and composer. With his nephew Whit by his side, he travels to Nashville to perform at the Grand Ole Opry in the backdrop of the Great Depression.
While the film received acclaim, it earned just $4.4 million, becoming his second worst performer.

Sudden Impact (1983)

"Dirty Harry is at it again."
His tenth film. The fourth installment in the Dirty Harry series, directed, it stars Eastwood and Sondra Locke. The film tells the story of a gang rape victim who decides to seek revenge on her rapists 10 years after the attack by killing them one by one. Inspector Harry Callahan, famous for his unconventional and often brutal crime-fighting tactics, is tasked with tracking down the serial killer.
The film received mixed reviews from critics, but it earned over $150 million worldwide, Eastwood's first film to pass that milestone. It's also very popular for including the iconic catchphrase, "Go ahead, make my day."

Tightrope (1984)

"A cop on the edge..."
His 11th film. It stars Eastwood, Geneviève Bujold, Dan Hedaya, Alison Eastwood and Jennifer Beck, and follows a detective determined to hunt down a sadomasochistic serial killer of prostitutes.
The film became another critical and commercial success for Eastwood.

Pale Rider (1985)

"...And Hell followed with him."
His 12th film. It stars Eastwood, Michael Moriarty and Carrie Snodgress. A couple and their daughter, along with a few others, are driven out of Lahood, California, by goons working for a mining baron. However, a stranger enters their life to assist them in their fight.
There was no stopping Eastwood: another critical and commercial success.

Heartbreak Ridge (1986)

"The scars run deep."
His 13th film. It stars Eastwood, Marsha Mason, Everett McGill, and Mario Van Peebles. The story centers on a U.S. Marine nearing retirement who gets a platoon of undisciplined Marines into shape and leads them during the American invasion of Grenada in 1983.
The film was inspired by an account of American paratroopers of the 82nd Airborne Division using a pay telephone and a credit card to call in fire support during the invasion of Grenada, and fashioned a script of a Korean War veteran career Army non-commissioned officer passing on his values to a new generation of soldiers. Eastwood was interested in the script and asked his producer, Fritz Manes, to contact the US Army with a view of filming the movie at Fort Bragg. However, the Army read the script and refused to participate, due to Highway being portrayed as a hard drinker, divorced from his wife, and using unapproved motivational methods to his troops, an image the Army did not want.
It received mixed reviews, with some deeming the film as "imperialist propaganda". But it was still another box office success.

Bird (1988)

"There are no second acts in American lives."
His 14th film. The film stars Forest Whitaker and Diane Venora. It is constructed as a montage of scenes from saxophonist Charlie Parker's life, from his childhood in Kansas City, through his early death at the age of 34.
Eastwood, a lifelong fan of jazz, had been fascinated by Parker ever since seeing him perform live in Oakland in 1946. He approached Chan Parker, Bird's common-law wife on whose memoirs the script was based, for input, and she lent Eastwood and arranger Lennie Niehaus a collection of recordings from her private collection Before Eastwood was involved, Richard Pryor was originally cast as Parker.
Despitive positive reviews, it performed poorly, earning just $2.2 million in North America.

White Hunter Black Heart (1990)

"An adventure in obsession."
His 15th film. Based on the novel by Peter Viertel, it stars Eastwood, Jeff Fahey, George Dzundza, Alun Armstrong and Marisa Berenson. It follows a famous movie director, John Wilson, who goes to Africa to make his next movie. He is an obstinate, contrary director who'd rather hunt elephants than take care of his crew or movie. He has become obsessed with one particular elephant and cares for nothing else.
Despite positive reviews, it made just $2.3 million domestically, not even 10% of the budget.

The Rookie (1990)

His 16th film. The film stars Eastwood, Charlie Sheen, Raul Julia, Sônia Braga, Lara Flynn Boyle, and Tom Skerritt. It follows a veteran police officer teamed up with a younger detective, whose intent is to take down a German crime lord in downtown Los Angeles, following months of investigation into an exotic car theft ring.
It received negative reviews for its acting and story, and it became another flop for Eastwood. That's three bombs in a row. Ouch.

Unforgiven (1992)

"Some legends will never be forgotten. Some wrongs can never be forgiven."
His 17th film. It stars Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Richard Harris and Morgan Freeman. It follows William Munny, a widower with two young kids, who was once a very vicious gunfighter who gave up everything after marriage. Now, a man named Schofield Kid brings him an offer that he cannot refuse, forcing him to come out of retirement for one last job.
David Webb Peoples wrote the script all the way back to 1976, and it was optioned by Francis Ford Coppola, but he lacked the funds needed to helm it. By Eastwood's own recollection, he was given the script in the "early 80s" although he did not immediately pursue it, because, according to him, "I thought I should do some other things first". Eastwood has long asserted that the film would be his last traditional Western, concerned that any future projects would simply rehash previous plotlines or imitate someone else's work. He dedicated the film to his close friends and mentors Sergio Leone and Don Siegel. Hackman initially refused to participate as his daughters were upset that he was starring in too many violent films, but he became fascinated by the script that he agreed.
It opened with $15 million and it legged all the way to $100 million after playing for almost one year, closing with $159 million worldwide, his now highest grossing film. The film received Eastwood's best reviews of his career, with many considering the film as his magnum opus as director. It received 9 Oscar nominations, and won four: Best Picture and Best Director for Eastwood, Best Supporting Actor for Hackman, and Best Film Editing. So Eastwood, on top of being a reliable box office draw, was now a 2-time Oscar winner.

A Perfect World (1993)

His 18th film. Kevin Costner, Eastwood and Laura Dern, and follows an escaped convict who takes a young boy hostage and attempts to escape on the road with the child, while being pursued by a Texas Ranger.
The film received critical acclaim, and has appeared as one of Eastwood's best films. The film disappointed in North America, but it earned up to $100 million overseas (Eastwood's first film to gross that much) and ended with $135 million worldwide.

The Bridges of Madison County (1995)

"The human heart has a way of making itself large again even after it's been broken into a million pieces."
His 19th film. Based on the novel by Robert James Waller, it stars Eastwood and Meryl Streep. The film is set in 1965, following a war bride, Francesca Johnson, who lives with her husband and two children on their Iowa farm. That year she meets National Geographic photojournalist, Robert Kincaid, who comes to Madison County, Iowa to photograph its historic covered bridges. With Francesca's family away for a short trip, the couple have an intense, four-day love affair.
It received more critical acclaim, and made over $180 million worldwide, becoming his highest grossing film. For her performance, Streep was nominated for an Oscar for Best Actress.

Absolute Power (1997)

His 20th film. Based on the novel by David Baldacci, it stars Eastwood, Gene Hackman, Ed Harris, Laura Linney, Judy Davis, Scott Glenn, Dennis Haysbert, and Richard Jenkins. It follows a master jewel thief who witnesses the killing of a woman by Secret Service agents.
It received mixed reviews, and disappointed at the box office.

Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil (1997)

"Welcome to Savannah, Georgia. A Ccty of hot nights and cold blooded murder."
His 21st film. Based on the book by John Berendt, it stars John Cusack and Kevin Spacey. It follows the story of antiques dealer Jim Williams, on trial for the killing of a male prostitute who was his lover. The multiple trials depicted in Berendt's book are combined into one trial for the film.
It received mediocre reviews, and flopped at the box office.

True Crime (1999)

His 22nd film. Based on the novel by Andrew Klavan, it stars Eastwood, Isaiah Washington, Denis Leary, LisaGay Hamilton and James Woods. It follows a journalist covering the execution of a death row inmate, only to discover that the convict may actually be innocent.
This was another project that received mediocre reviews and flopped at the box office.

Space Cowboys (2000)

"Boys will be boys."
His 23rd film. It stars Eastwood, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, and James Garner as four aging former test pilots who are sent into space to repair an old Soviet satellite.
It received very positive reviews, and earned over $128 million worldwide.

Blood Work (2002)

"He's a heartbeat away from catching the killer."
His 24th film. Based on the novel by Michael Connelly, it stars Eastwood, Jeff Daniels, Wanda De Jesús, and Anjelica Huston. It follows a retired FBI agent who recently had a heart transplant but still takes up the job to nab a killer.
It was another film with mediocre reviews and flop status.

Mystic River (2003)

"We bury our sins, we wash them clean."
His 25th film. Based on the novel by Dennis Lehane, it stars Sean Penn, Tim Robbins, Kevin Bacon, Laurence Fishburne, Marcia Gay Harden, and Laura Linney. It follows three childhood friends who are reunited 25 years later when one of them suffers a family tragedy.
Michael Keaton was originally cast in the role of Det. Sean Devine, and did several script readings with the cast, as well as his own research into the practices of the Massachusetts Police Department. However, creative differences between Keaton and Eastwood led to Keaton leaving the production. He was replaced by Kevin Bacon. This was the first film in which Eastwood would be credited as composer.
The film had a slow roll-out, but it was aided by strong word of mouth, closing with a wonderful $156 million worldwide. It also received acclaim, and was named as one of Eastwood's greatest films. Sean Penn received universal acclaim for his performance, with some naming it among the best acting of the century, particularly for one scene (if you watched it, you definitely know which scene). It received 6 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture and Best Director for Eastwood. It won two: Best Actor for Penn and Best Supporting Actor for Robbins.

Come back tomorrow for Part 2

The Verdict

Hope you liked this edition. You can find this and more in the wiki for this section.
The next director will be Robert Zemeckis. One of the biggest falls from grace.
I asked you to choose who else should be in the run and the comment with the most upvotes would be chosen. It had to be a controversial filmmaker. Well, we'll later talk about... Zack Snyder. Oh, BoxOffice chose fuego 🔥
This is the schedule for the following four:
Week Director Reasoning
May 20-26 Robert Zemeckis Can we get old Zemeckis back?
May 27-June 2 Richard Donner An influential figure of the 70s and 80s.
June 3-9 Ang Lee What happened to Lee?
June 10-16 Zack Snyder RIP Inbox.
Who should be next after Snyder? That's up to you.

Redditors on the PCT Week 10* (13 MAY 2024)

Hey folks, welcome back! So sorry for the lack of an update last week, unfortunately a combo of technical issues and life stuff got in the way of the post, but I'm glad to be back! Enjoy some slightly longer updates this week :)
I can't believe we're already in May! Now that the majority of hikers will be on trail, the numbers of new people added to the list weekly will start to slow down.
In hiker news, it looks like there has been a big noro bubble in and around Big Bear in the last week or two. Rumor is it may actually be some sort of algae in the Mission Creek area making people sick instead of noro. The hikers in our update mostly seem to be avoiding it so far. As for weather, the Sierras are still pretty snowed in, so many folks seem to be considering their options.
I don't anticipate there will be many more folks signing up moving forwards, so I won't continue to add the signup link, but it is still available on any of the past posts! Those are linked below the table if you want to take a look.
Hiker Trail Name Start Date Last Location Update
