2024.06.07 19:58 HeadOfSpectre Soldiers Keep Moving (Part 3)

Part 2

It was late when I got back home but for as tired as I was, I knew that I wasn’t going to sleep a wink.

I went into my computer room and opened up my laptop, before plugging in the USB the bartender had given me. There were four folders on it, each one containing the feed from a different camera in the Rooster. I clicked into one of the folders at random and picked through the video files inside, looking for the stretch of footage that I needed. It didn’t take me long to find it either.

I clicked into one of the video files, and watched as the chaos of the Red Rooster played out before me. People drinking, flirting, laughing. Living their lives. Nothing I hadn’t seen before. I let the footage play for a bit, before getting up to grab myself a couple of beers from the fridge. When I got back, I started skipping through the video, waiting for the moment my two victims showed up.

When I’d taken the bartender's statement, he’d told me that he’d seen the two before, both separate and together. He didn’t know their names, but he knew their faces. Other patrons recognized them too. One of them had identified the red haired girl as ‘Kayley’ and had mentioned she lived down at River Ridge, a trailer park outside of town. Nobody had been able to name the Elegant Woman, although a lot of patrons had said they’d seen her around before.

Apparently, both of them usually came to hook up, leaving with a different stranger on most nights. Odds are, they’d why they were there on that night too. They’d come in at around 8:47. The Elegant looking dark haired woman seemed to be the one taking the lead, and seemed to be the one doing most of the talking. She and Kayley went to sit at the bar, talking amongst each other all the while. I couldn’t say for sure what they were talking about. Even if the file had audio, I doubt I’d have been able to single them out over the crowd. They looked at ease though.

They shared a couple of drinks. Nothing seemed that out of the ordinary. I took a sip of my beer, watching them. Eventually, Kayley got distracted talking to a man further down the bar, while the Elegant Woman stayed at the bar, drinking casually as if she had all the time in the world.

The man in the suit came in at around 9:12.

My attention shifted to him the moment he came in through the door.

He fit the description that every witness I’d spoken to had given about the shooter. A tall man with a red beard in a black suit who was wearing a pair of reflective sunglasses despite the fact that it was 9 at night. Even beneath his suit, it was easy to tell he had a good physique, and his crew cut implied a military history to me.

Red Beard took a seat at the bar, a few seats down from the Elegant Woman. He ordered a drink, and nursed it for a bit, discreetly looking around at the other patrons of the bar but not seeming to look directly at either the Elegant Woman or Kayley. He just drank his beer, and when he was finished, he got up and switched seats, moving to sit beside the Elegant Woman. She looked over at him, putting on a charming smile as they talked. I almost got the impression that they were flirting with each other.

They kept talking for a while and as they did, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. If I didn’t know what was coming next… it would have caught me completely off guard. When she turned to take a sip of her drink, the gun appeared in his hand, almost without warning. She didn’t even have time to react before he shot her at point blank range. Three bullets straight to the chest.

I saw Kayley spin around and freeze up. Her entire body tensed, as if she was ready to lunge at the shooter. If that was her intention though, she never got the chance. He put two bullets in her without even thinking, then without so much as a glance backward, he took off toward the door.

I rubbed my temples, watching as the chaos of the aftermath unfolded. Some people called 911. Some, like the bartender, ran to the aid of the bodies. I saw myself run in through the door less than six minutes after the shooting had happened.

That was where I stopped the video.

I took another sip of my beer, and sighed. I rewound it a little bit, watching as the shooter came in and watching as he left. I might recognize this man on the street if I saw him, but other than his red hair and sunglasses, there wasn’t really much to go off of.

The way he left… he walked away almost casually, as if he had someplace to be. He didn’t run. He didn’t panic. He was cold, calm, and professional. I guess that fit with the other murders, didn’t it?

I steeled myself to review the footage again, this time from another camera. Maybe there’d be something from one of the angles that I didn’t see. I checked the angles of the other three cameras. Two of them wouldn’t offer me much. One of them didn’t even catch the shooting. But the last one…

The last one looked promising.

It was situated near the back of the bar and through it, you could see out a window onto the street. It wasn’t the best view… but it was different.

From that angle, I could see a black sedan pull up to drop the man in the suit off. I saw him walk in the door and sit by the bar and from there, the scene played out the same as it did before. The man in the suit shot the two women and he left.

He strode out toward the sedan parked out front, got in the passenger seat and the sedan took off like a shot. There’d been a getaway driver. Interesting…

I set my unfinished beer down. I could drink the rest of it later. I needed to go on a little drive.

It was around 4 AM when I returned to the Red Rooster. I parked my car on the street, exactly where the black sedan had parked, and got out. The downtown area around me was dead silent. Lifeless almost. There wasn’t another soul in sight. But that was fine by me. That just meant that there were no distractions.

It didn’t take me long to find what I was looking for. There was a bank across the street and I walked toward it. The doors were locked, but that was fine. I could see what I needed through the windows.

Bank machines.

More specifically, bank machines with cameras. Cameras that were pointed right at the Red Rooster.
Perfect.

***

I was off shift the next day, but that just gave me time to get some actual work done. It was probably better I do it all from home. This case was Di Cesares now. I wasn’t sure what she’d do if she caught me working on it, and I wasn’t entirely sure I wanted to find out. Judging by those fangs in her mouth, she wasn’t human either. Hell, I wasn’t sure if she was actually even from the State Police… I got the impression that Sheriff Smith didn’t seem to think so. But if she wasn’t with them, who was she with? Why hadn’t the State Police sent someone else? Had she done something to them? Even if she had, I couldn’t just believe that the State Police wouldn’t notice something like that.

No… there was something else going on here. But I could figure that out later.

First things first - I needed to review the footage from the bank machines. The bank was more than willing to give me access to the footage when I asked. They knew who I was, they knew what had happened and they knew why I was asking.

Once I got back home, it didn’t take me long to find what I was looking for. Just as I’d hoped, the bank machines had recorded the car that had been waiting outside the Red Rooster. I couldn’t make out the license plate from the footage… but I could see enough to identify the make and model of the car.

An Audi A6 Sedan.

I’m not much of a car guy, but I can say that there’s not a lot of Audi’s in rural Ohio. Even without the license plate, this shouldn’t have been hard to find. I made a call to a buddy of mine in the BMV, told him what I was looking for and within the hour, he had the results for me.

It turns out, there were actually only eight Audi A6 Sedans registered in our county and all of them were registered to the same company.

Apostle Security.

Naturally, I did a bit of research on them. Apostle was a mid-sized private security firm based in Cincinnati, although they had a few other offices in Ohio and some of the surrounding states. It’d been started by a man named Joseph Cray about ten years ago, although beyond that I couldn’t find out much about their history and really, I didn’t care. Their website didn’t list any offices in my county… but the BMV seemed to say otherwise. My friend there had given me an address outside of town and even if I was off duty, I figured that no one could give me any guff for taking a little scenic drive. And if I just so happened to see some black Audi’s that looked like the one that had been parked outside of Red Rooster last night… well, maybe I’d pass that information along to whoever was on duty at the time. I’m pretty sure it was Biggs and Hoffman. They could decide whether or not to tell Di Cesare. It would be completely out of my hands.

I headed out to my car, plugged the address I’d gotten into my GPS and took a little drive.

As I drove through the backroads leading out of town, I felt a sense of quiet apprehension. Maybe I was being naive, putting my hopes on this lead. But I’d done the work. If Apostle really was behind this, it would make sense for them to have some sort of location in the county. If I was right, maybe I wouldn’t find all the answers to this surreal mess of a case, but I’d at least find the shooters. That was something. At least people wouldn’t be dying anymore.

Christ… I still didn’t know what to make of the victims. The gills on Kayley, the fangs on Patricia Russell, the fractures on Geoffery Vickers bones. Maybe these people really were monsters? If so… maybe these shooters knew that. Maybe that was why they did it.

But even if that was the case - I still couldn’t just leave a roving kill squad to wander around unchecked. The way things were going, it was just a matter of time until one of the victims was just some innocent bystander. I passed by a familiar sign as I neared the edge of the county. An advertisement for the local Volkswagen dealership.

‘You’re in Smith Country!’ It declared, along with a prominent smiling photo of Aaron Smith himself. I’d always found that sign a little creepy. The eyes and the smile were both a little too wide. It made the man look downright unhinged. I’d never actually met Aaron Smith in person, despite working for his older brother. The Sheriff would mention him from time to time and I could see the family resemblance, but it was hard to imagine the face on that sign sitting down to an odd Sunday dinner with Sheriff Smith.

To be fair, they probably didn’t talk much. I don’t think Aaron Smith himself even lived in town anymore. He owned a bunch of other dealerships scattered around southwest Ohio. Smith Volkswagen was just the oldest. But the sign had been there forever, and why fix what ain’t broken, even if it is creepy as hell?

Either way, just past that unsettling sign was my destination. Once upon a time, it’d been a small auto garage that had long since gone defunct. It’d been closed down since before I moved to town. From what I’d seen, Smith Volkswagen had used the property as an additional lot to store the cars they had no room for, from time to time but it didn’t seem like they did that anymore. Now the place just looked completely dead. There were no cars parked out front, Audi or otherwise.

I pulled into the parking lot, and checked the address I had to make sure it was correct. This was definitely the place. I parked my car and got out, before making my way to the front door. I found it locked.

Naturally.

Guess my luck had to run out somewhere. Maybe this was a dead end? I already knew I probably wasn’t getting inside without a warrant, and I didn’t exactly know what my chances were of getting one.

I tried the door again. It still didn’t open. From the corner of my eye, I noticed a security camera by the door. I stared up into it. The presence of a camera probably didn’t mean much. Whoever owned this property probably wanted to deter adventurous kids and urban explorers from going in. Maybe it was nothing, but I still couldn’t help but find it interesting.

I considered just going back to the car but didn’t want to feel like I’d wasted my time, so I figured I’d snoop a little bit. I took a quick walk around the perimeter, peeking in through the windows that I passed. I didn’t see much, but judging by what I could see, this place wasn’t abandoned. I didn’t see anyone inside, but the inside looked awfully clean for an abandoned building.

Going out around back, I noticed that there were garbage bags in the dumpsters out back. Not a lot… but enough to confirm to me that there were people here. Maybe this wasn’t a dead end…

I heard a sudden mechanical whirr from the other side of the building that made me pause. I rounded the corner, moving along the back of the building just in time to see a convoy of five black Audi’s rolling out of the garage door, one after the other. They turned onto the road, moving almost in perfect sync as they headed toward town. I felt a knot form in my stomach as I watched them go.

I’d found the cars I’d been looking for… although if they were going somewhere, odds are that we’d be getting a call about it all too soon.

My heart was beating faster in my chest.
I knew I couldn’t just sit there and watch. I knew I needed to do something.
So I did.

I ran back to my car as fast as my legs could carry me, leaping behind the wheel and keying the engine. I tore back out onto the road, speeding after the convoy. I didn’t know what my plan was. I didn’t have a plan. I just knew that if I didn’t do something, people were going to die.

The convoy turned away from downtown, following the river north. They passed by the River Ridge RV park, moving further down the road towards the outskirts of the county. It was hard to say exactly where they were going. There wasn’t much out that way, not for several miles. But they were moving with purpose and so was I.

About ten miles past River Ridge, I noticed something up ahead. Flashing lights, like what you’d see on a squad car, although there was no color to them. They were just white.

The convoy in front of me finally began to pull off the road. I could see them passing another Audi, this one outfitted with an LED bar. Two men on the road waved them off. Both of them were dressed in well pressed suits and wore reflective sunglasses. One of them was bald with a very thick dark stubble, and the other had a familiar red beard and military crew cut.

The knot in my stomach grew tighter as I drove toward the men, waiting for them to stop me. I reached for my pistol, ready for them to make a move. They just waved me on, barely even looking at me. I still kept my hand on my gun as I drove past, watching Red Beard and Baldy like a hawk.

I could see two other men behind the parked Audi with the flashing lights out of the corner of my eye. They were on the ground, fidgeting with something. It took me a moment to figure out what it was.

Spike strips.

I’d seen them before. We’d used them back during my army days at vehicle checkpoints and while we’d never had to use them while I’d been working as a city cop, we did have them.

They were setting up an ambush here. The five Audi’s that had pulled off the road parked along the shoulder further down. I could see men in suits getting out of them. I didn’t see any guns… I guess they were still partially trying to be subtle. But I still had a feeling that they were armed.

I kept on driving, going further down the road. Stopping and confronting these men wasn’t an option. Maybe they weren’t interested in making a mess by shooting any random schmuck who passed by their little trap, but that didn’t change the fact that they were probably dangerous. Charging in and dealing with them by myself wasn’t a smart idea. So instead, I reached for my phone, and I called Biggs.

He answered on the first ring.
“Hey Sawy-”
“Ethan, we have a situation,” I said. “Who’s on duty with you right now?”
“Right now it’s Hoffman, why what’s going on?”
“Call Hoffman, call the Sheriff and call Lopez. There’s going to be another attack.”
“What? Where?”

“I’ve spotted some suspects setting up some kind of ambush ten miles north of River Ridge. How soon can you be here?”
“Twenty, thirty minutes, maybe?” He said, “Sawyer, where are you right now?”
“I just passed the ambush point. They’re gearing up for something, now move your ass!”
“Y-yeah, of course!”
Biggs hung up immediately, and I pulled off to the side of the road. I took a deep breath, before checking the magazine of my pistol and getting out.

I wasn’t going to charge in needlessly… but I needed to have eyes on this situation. It’d be easier if I could get closer on foot. Leaving my car behind, I dipped into the woods along the other side of the road, letting them hide me as I walked back along the road toward the ambush.

The river whispered beside me as I crept through the trees, and the steep incline leading down toward the river helped keep me low and hidden from sight.

I could see the flashing white lights of the parked Audi, and watched as they suddenly went dark. Red Beard was speaking into a walkie talkie, and on the far side of the road, I could see several men waiting by the five parked Audi’s. This time, they had guns. Assault rifles, by the looks of it.

I was right. There was another attack coming and it was coming now.
“Fish market’s on the move, gentlemen. Put out the nets!” Red Beard said.

On his order, I watched one of the men pull the spike strip across the road, while Red Beard addressed the men on the far side of the road. He spoke like a drill instructor and the men he addressed carried themselves like soldiers.
“As of right now, we are locked in on this operation! We run things smooth, we run it clean, we get the job done. No mistakes like last time! No stragglers! Understood?”
“Sir yes sir!” Came a familiar chorus.

After a few minutes, headlights appeared further down the road. I watched them from my vantage point, praying they belonged to Biggs. But the oncoming vehicle was too big to be a squad car. This looked more like an RV.

No…

This was a whole convoy of RV’s. Most likely coming from River Ridge.

I couldn’t count them all, but they were all heading towards the ambush… and that was when the pieces slowly began to click into place.

Kayley, the girl who’d survived… the girl the people at Red Rooster had been able to ID. She’d lived at River Ridge. If she and her friend from the other night weren’t human… then there was a damn good chance that there were others just like them there. Other women with gills. I guess River Ridge would be the perfect place for them… it was quiet, away from the hustle and bustle of downtown and close to the water. Whatever these people were… it’d just about be the perfect place for them.
‘Fish market’s on the move.’

That’s what Red Beard had said.

The other killings hadn’t exactly been low key… if there were more girls like Kayley at River Ridge, odds are they’d heard about them. And odds are that once they realized they were being targeted too, their first instinct would be to get the hell out of dodge. That would explain why they were carrying out this attack in broad daylight too. They weren’t going off of their own schedule, they were trying to catch the monsters as they fled. And now their targets were here… drawing closer and closer to their massacre with each passing second.

There was no sign of Biggs or anyone else. They still had to be at least fifteen minutes out… probably more.. By the time they got here, the shooting would probably already be over.

I couldn’t let that happen.

For the record - I knew that what I was about to do was extraordinarily stupid, but I didn’t see a whole lot of other options. I couldn’t allow them to ambush those RV’s. I couldn’t. I didn’t really stop to weigh the pros and cons in my head. Sure, I knew that what I was about to do had a chance of survival that was damn near zero… but hey, everyone dies sometime, right? This was the only option I had available to me. In a lot of ways, it wasn’t really even a choice I made. I just did it. I took aim at the nearest target, and I fired.

I saw one of the men by the car, the bald one with the scruff grab his shoulder and stumble back a step. He wasn’t dead, but he was hurt. I shot at him again, but he was low enough to the ground and far enough away that I didn’t hit him. He hastily dragged himself off the road and behind the Audi. He still managed to stand, so clearly he wasn’t in that bad a shape.

The moment he heard the gunshots, Red Beard spun around, drawing his own pistol as he did. I knew that he saw me. I could see his expression creasing into a scowl the moment he did. Our eyes locked for only a split second before the air was filled with the sound of gunshots.

POP. POP. POP.

I felt a white hot pain sting across my arm as one of his bullets grazed me, and even though I returned fire I doubt I hit him. Red Beard dove behind his Audi, but behind him I could see his little kill squad moving in.

I couldn’t count how many of them there were. More than ten. Fifteen, maybe? Twenty at most? Who could say.

I retreated back into the trees, skidding down the forested incline toward the river as I waited for the gunmen to come for me.
“Keep off the road!” Red Beard snarled, “Watch your fire! Wait until you have a shot!”
He must’ve been trying to salvage this operation… Although from where I sat, the RV’s looked to be slowing down. Seems they’d noticed the gunfire.

Red Beard glanced in the direction of the RV’s, and I could see the gears in his head spinning. This was all going wrong… but he didn’t seem the type to give up. On the road, the lead RV moved to make a U turn. I could see Red Beard watching it, and took a pot shot at him. It didn’t hit him, but it did shatter the driver's side window of his Audi.

Roaring in frustration, Red Beard fired three shots back at me.
Goddamnit! Fuck it! Squads 1 and 2, kill that son of a bitch! 3 to 5, intercept the convoy, NOW!”

I saw some of his men back off, running back to their cars. The rest moved onto the road, coming after me. I fired at them, and I saw one of them stumble back as I shot him dead in the chest. But he didn’t die. He stumbled, but picked himself right back up.

Great, they were armored too.

I was punished for poking my head out by a burst of machine gun fire. The trees by my head splintered as I dove down into cover. I lost my footing, sliding further down the incline toward the river. The only reason I didn’t fall all the way down was because I caught myself on a tree. Looking up, I could see about eight figures at the top of the incline, coming down off the road. One of them spotted me and opened fire. All I could do was scramble out of the way and roll further down the hill toward the water.

Gunfire followed me, but I couldn’t see who was shooting. I couldn’t see where they were. I couldn’t stop to try and get a shot. There were too many of them. I dove down to safety behind a fallen old tree. Bullets rained down on it, tearing off chunks of bark and sending splinters raining down on me.

I gripped my gun tight. My blood rushing in my ears. Somehow… I always wondered if I’d die like this. Dug into the dirt, with bullets whizzing past my head. Maybe there wasn’t any other way for me to die? Who’s to say? But I’d be damned if I didn’t take at least one of those bastards down with me.

I took a deep breath. Steeled myself for what I was sure was going to be my last stand.

Then, gun in hand I rose to return fire.

Only when the rifles went off, they weren’t aimed at me.

I could see the eight figures standing in between the trees, but they’d turned away from me. They were shooting at something else now, although I couldn’t immediately see what. I just saw a shape, moving between the trees. I heard the ground shift and saw a cloud of dirt fly up. One of the armed men was sent screaming down the incline, into the river. I wasn’t sure if he’d survived the fall or not.

One of the other men opened fire, only for the shape to grab his rifle, I saw them force it down, before lunging at his throat. He screamed as they sank their teeth into him, but didn’t seem to be able to put up much of a fight otherwise. Two of his friends opened fire on him, hoping to kill the shape that had him in its grasp. The ground seemed to shift beneath them, sending both of them down the incline and into the river. Within seconds, whoever or whatever the hell this was had just taken out half of the men who were supposed to be killing me.

They tossed the man they’d just bitten to the ground and for the first time, I got a good look at my savior. Clementine Di Cesare’s mouth was smeared red with blood. Her sunglasses were absent and in her blue eyes I could see an unsettling calm. As if this wasn’t so much different to her than any other mundane chore.

The remaining gunmen seemed to freeze at the sight of her, not seeming to know how to react until Di Cesare moved. She was fast. It was hard to tell if she was running, or if the ground simply shifted beneath her. She lunged for the nearest gunman, kneeing him in the stomach and tossing him aside like he weighed nothing, although while she dealt with him, the man beside him got off a lucky shot.

Before Di Cesare could deal with him, he emptied half his magazine into her chest… but she didn’t fall. Hell, there wasn’t a scratch on her. The guy who’d shot her on the other hand?

Blood dribbled from his mouth. His body jerked violently as he collapsed to the ground. It was as if he’d been the one who’d gotten shot, not her. Di Cesare barely paid him any mind, regarding the final two men with that eerie calmness.

I could see one of them stumbling away, trying to get back up the incline. The other one just gritted his teeth and decided to fight on until the end. He was smart enough to know that shooting her wasn’t going to work, so instead he pulled a combat knife from his jacket and charged at her, as if it would do him any good.

Di Cesare barely even reacted. She sidestepped him and casually sent him down the incline into the river below. I saw him tumble down into the river before crashing into the water below with a final scream.

Di Cesare watched him fall with a quiet disinterest, before her attention shifted to me. I took a step back, half expecting her to come for me just like she did with the others. Instead, she simply wiped the blood from her mouth before she turned away from me, and headed back up the incline, moving with purpose.

I hesitated for a moment before following her. Di Cesare stepped out onto the road and surveyed the scene before her with an intense gaze. Whatever Red Beards plan had been… clearly everything had gone catastrophically wrong. I could see some of the black Audi’s on the road, trying to follow the RV’s, although the one that got the closest to one of the RV’s near the back of the convoy got rammed by it and sent careening off the road.

The tires of Red Beard’s Audi screeched as it tore back out onto the road. I saw him behind the wheel, sparing Di Cesare and I a single glance as he took off at top speed. I raised my gun to shoot at him but Di Cesare seized me by the wrist, stopping me from doing so. I looked over at her, confused.
“Let them run,” She said calmly. “We know where they are now.”

She looked down the road, back toward the fleeing RVs, and seemed momentarily content. One of the five parked Audi’s, driven by the survivor of the group who’d gone after me sped onto the road and Di Cesare regarded it with quiet disinterest before walking over to the road spikes and beginning to move them.
“Help me with this,” She said coolly.

I hesitated for a moment before doing exactly what she asked.
“You called for backup?” She asked, as we dragged the spikes off the road.
“I did,” I said. “Wait, you’re not with them?”
“No,” She replied plainly. We packed away the spikes but left them at the side of the road. Someone else could collect them as evidence. “I was with the RV convoy.”

I raised an eyebrow at her.
“You were with them?” I asked. “So you knew about the attack?”
“I knew it was likely,” She said. “Although I didn’t expect you here, Deputy Sawyer,”
She tilted her head at me.
“Working behind my back, I see.”

“I was following up on a lead,” I said. “I tracked the vehicle that last night's shooter used to a garage just on the edge of town. I saw some cars leaving and figured it was probably bad news, so I followed them here.”
“I see… you’re quite sedulous, aren’t you?”
“Well I couldn’t exactly sit around given the past few days, could I?” I asked. “What the hell just happened back there, on the incline? How did you… what the hell did you do? I watched someone shoot you, then die of their own gunshot wounds! How the hell did you do that? What the hell are you?”

The questions spilled out of me without much thought, although Di Cesare didn’t seem to care much.
“That’s a question with a complicated answer,” Di Cesare replied.
“Uncomplicate it, then!”
“I’m an old soldier, same as you,” She said. “Maybe I know a little bit of magic… maybe I’m not entirely human anymore, but that’s what I am at my core.”
“Vampire…” I said quietly.
She didn’t answer, but there was a look in her eyes that told me I was right. At this point, after seeing what I’d just seen, I wasn’t in much of a state of mind to doubt it.

“So that trick with the bullet wounds… was that a vampire thing or a magic thing” I asked.
“Attribution spell,” She said. “Makes me harder to kill. Not a lot gets through it. I’ll tell you what. Give me your car keys, and I’ll answer any questions you have later.”
She extended a hand to me.

“I’m sorry, my car keys?” I asked, “Why?!”
“I need to follow the RV’s to make sure they make it out of the county safely. You said you’ve called in backup. You still need to be here for when they arrive. So… I’ll be borrowing your vehicle.”
I hesitated for a moment, before swearing under my breath and handing my keys off to her.
“Do what you’ve got to do…” I said under my breath.

She nodded.
“It’ll be returned to you when I’m done, no worse for wear.”
With that, she pushed past me and walked toward my car and all I could really do was just watch. She took my car, and sped off after the RV’s, leaving me in the road to clean up the mess.

Sicily - Genoa Wedding Opening
I was surprised to learn from the comments under another post that many players find Sicily a tough start. I for one love them for the the fast and action packed campaigns they offer, even though their unit rooster is distinctly average at best. So I decided to carry on with my Openings series with Italio-Norman Sicily. It is called the
GENOA WEDDING OPENING
because it culminates in a royal wedding in Genoa and by that time (the end of Turn 6) delivers five dynamically growing cities, including Genoa, Florence, and Tunis), a completed Crusade (in Turn 3), alliances and great relationships with the Pope and factions we (will) have land borders with, and the path to complete our first Citadel by Turn 12 - which can start spamming Norman Knights and Dismounted Norman Knights (practically Sicily unique flavour Chivalric ones) from then on.
As with the Hungarian Prague opening, all battles are auto-resolve proof and every detail here refers to vh/vh difficulty) <<<
TURN 1 (Figs. 2 & 3)
Move your Eastern fleet (I.e. the one in the Adriatic Sea towards Northern Sicily, and march your cardinal towards the future meeting/boarding point. They will join the Western Fleet in Turn 3. Take everyone but a Peasant Archer unit (including Prince Simon) from Palermo,hi, and Alberto and his troops to that coastal meeting point and move the Western fleet to the coast east to them.
Convert Palermo into a town.
This might sound a bit counter-intuitive, but swapping Palermo and Naples makes a lot of sense. First, by the end of this opening, Turn 7, Palermo will make more money than Naples as a town. She has double the trade goods, better future sea connections and a more important port to develop. Naples however can be turned into a Citadel on the Italian mainland (a unique asset) by turn 12, offering a quick land route for Norman Knights to the North, as well as for their to the heel of the Italian boot, where East-bound ships can pick crusaders and reinforcements and disembark troops returning for retraining. Let the Venetians, Hungary and fake-Rome hurt each other badly for the other side of the sea. Don't even bother building a port there, it would just tempt Venice and the Ere to blockade it and start wars. <<<
Meanwhile, bring King Roger to the Papal borders, join him with Princess Matilda (our strategic weapon of diplomacy), and our Spy closely following (Fig. 3).
Build the first farm upgrade in Naples, a Diplomat and a Spy.
Set all taxes to Very Low, we are going for fast population growth, we will make money by other means first.
TURN 2
The first move is for our Charming Princess (Fig. 4). Pope Gregory will invariably cross the Tevere and march to the Southern border, we are not yet best buddies, but a threat. Matilda leaves the King's stack first and meets the Pope. She offers Alliance, Trade Rights, mutual Military Access and Map Information (we don't ask for the Pope's, it's ~700 Florins and we can see everything he does anyway), and asks for 2400 Florins. Gregory will either accept it straight away or negotiate something like 2950 or 3700 Florins, as in this demo. (Fig. 5)
Now the MOST IMPORTANT PART: don't break the negotiations yet, but keep gifting the Pope until relationship with him reaches Perfect, it costs usually ~1700 Florins, you can go up by 100s.
Only then end negotiations - go straight away to the Papacy screen and request a Crusade on Tunis. Even one relationship level less might make it doubtful that the Pope grants your request, hence the bribe.
In Sicily, join the Crusade with the combined armies of Prince Simon and Alberto, hire the Crusader Knight and the Religious Fanatic, board the fleet and sail them into the bay east of Tunis. Once there, disembark Alberto and the cavalry to the north of Tunis and Prince Simon and the infantry to the south of it (Fig. 6).
Or the way around, doesn't matter much, the point is splitting them, otherwise Alberto would lead the combined stack and we want Simon to get the extra chivalry for occupation. <<<
Use the Military Access to move King Roger to the northmost corner of the Papal States. Don't move onto HRE territory or you'll damage relations. Follow with the Princess and move all Diplomats and Spies North. (Fig. 7)
Build another Diplomat and a Spear Militia for defence in Naples.
Move the Eastern Fleet and hop your Cardinal on it.
TURN 3
The sequence of events is important here, otherwise you might mess up your movement points (Fig. 8).
3.1. Move Matilda out of the King's stack and towards Bologna. Move the Spy with her. 3.2. Move the King to besiege Florence. 3.3. Hire the two mercenary spears and one crossbowman. 3.4. Join the Crusade. 3.5. Move your Spies and Diplomats to the illustrated positions.
Now you can return to Tunis, storm it (with Prince Simon's infantry), its an easy, auto-resolve proof win (Fig. 9), and here we go, Prince Simon the Crusader, all generals gaining chivalry, nearly all troops experience, the kingdom earns Papal favour and a hefty cash price. All in Turn 3.
Simon occupies Tunis and thus gains another Chivalry badge.
Now again a bit of posititional fiddling: we separate our Western fleet by moving two ships out of the three one tile north. Alberto, the cavalry, plus all infantry but the Religious Fanatic boards the two ships. The Religious Fanatic stays behind to guard Tunis, Prince Simon the Crusader boards the single ship. The latter sails to Palermo port, disembarks and enters Palermo.
The two ships (with Alberto and the army) sail the closest to Rome possible, where the Eastern fleet (with the Cardinal) joins them (Fig. 10).
TURN 4
King Simon storms Florence (another auto-resolve proof battle, Fig. 11).
Matilda meets the HRE at Bologna. Alliance, Trade Rights, maps, at this point the HRE will not pay much, we got something like 250 Florins. Rather go under these amounts than above, don't let Matilda lose charm by declined offers). Move her towards Genoa after.
Move the king (but the Religious Fanatic garrison) towards Genoa.
Build farm upgrades everywhere and another Diplomat in Naples.
Take the single ship from Palermo Harbour and bring Prince Simon and his now 6% chivalry based population growth bonus to Naples.
Bring the main fleet near to the fishing village in Tuscany (Fig. 12).
TURN 5
Move the two Spies into Genoa. If both succeed it's a 36% chance they will open the gates.
Disembark Alberto next to Genoa, besiege it, join with the King and his army (Fig. 13).
If the Spies open the gates, storm it, otherwise lift the siege, move them to explore and resiege.
With the navy hit any Milanese fleets in sight.
Move Matilda towards Genoa.
TURN 6
Storm Genoa, again an auto-resolve proof win (Fig. 14) occupy it, move Matilda in and marry her off to Alberto. Ding, dong, the Genoa Wedding Opening is complete. Move the King to Florence and all our Italian settlements are growing chivalry boosted now. Hospitalers might offer building a guild any turn now.
Move the Diplomat to Milan and charge the heavy for a ceasefire. (Fig. 15). They will want Genoa back on the longer term, so don't go too long term, they'll break it eventually.
Raising the tribute by 400 per turn we sold them an alliance as well to safeguard the deal. (Fig. 16). France popped up and signed an alliance as well, so the northern border is secured for the time being. (Fig. 17).
RESULTS (Figs. 18 to 20).
This opening gives the foundation for a number of options available for an ambitious Italo-Norman king.
In Turn 6 Naples is 3 turns away from growing to 6000, which with the building time of a citadel of 3 turns, means that it can complete a Citadel in Turn 12. Norman Knights and their Dismounted fellows are practically Chivalric ones with slightly more strength but less charge bonus, they former are key to open battles the latter for sieges.
The economy is healthy even discounting for the temporary tributes that will soon run out. Generals have high chivalry, farms are building and low taxes can be afforded.
With securing Genoa and Florence life in the Western Mediterranean has become much easier for us, no port for Milan, can sweep up those islands at last, and the fleet can now focus on the Moors.
Fantastic relations with the Pope, opportunity to request another Crusade as soon as Turn 13.
We have entered the Northern Italy Chaos Poker with a strong hand (two cities).
Ready to either or West or East, snowball Crusades, finance conquests and growing our settlements tall and fast.

2024.06.07 15:42 Woodstovia [The End and The Death vol. 3] Faith in The Emperor defeats the Death Guard

I thought this was one of the stranger moments of TEATD3 and an interesting showing of what the Emperor's faith can do even during the Heresy before his mass worship
Sigismund and a small force of Astartes assault a Death Guard army besieging The Fallen who hold The Astronomicon after saving a column of civilian refugees, led by Euphrati Keeper who encourages them to view the Emperor as a god. Sigismund believes that if he can assassinate their leadership his smaller force can still overcome the traitors but after defeating the Lord of the Death Guard he is disappointed at the results:
Sigismund has already whipped the black sword around in a double- grip underhand slash that cuts Skulidas’ exposed throat.
The Cadaver Lord falls. His bone-blade falls with him, and lies twitching and helpless on the bloody ground. The cloak of flies falls too: it falls onto Skulidas like a shroud, pouring in through the joints of his plate to feed on his still-hot corpse. Sigismund turns, and fights off other attackers. He’s anticipating the reaction, the wash of unrest that bathes an enemy force when its leader falls, the pivot-point of falter and dismay that he and his Seconds can use to shift the balance of the battle.
It doesn’t come. The Death Guard fights on, oblivious to the loss. Sigismund, master of single combat, understands the terrible strength of his enemy clearly at last. It fights as a whole, like some colonial hive, as unified in its intent as a swarm of flies. It cannot be confounded by a single loss, no matter how significant. It cannot be killed by a head wound. Sigismund’s fundamental methodology is useless.
He finds himself in a churning press with Pontis to his right and Janjar to his left. Faustal is dead. Most of the men who followed him in are gone. His bravura tactic, the only chance they had to win, is shot.
A chaos encloses him, a dozen swords and lances, and he feels a change in the enemy’s temper. At first, he thinks – with what little wit he can spare to do anything other than fight – that it is the reaction after all, a delayed reaction to the Cadaver Lord’s execution that has finally slid, belatedly, into the fever-fogged minds of the Death Guard.
But it isn’t that.
The Death Guard has recoiled because another army has joined the fight.
On what is now a memory of the Via Aquila, Keeler hears the echo of the voice. It was a war cry, unmistakably, a call to arms. But it was also a cry for help. The light of revelation is clearer than ever in her mind. It is a strange kind of revelation. Keeler knows precisely what it wants of her, but not how or why. She has to trust it. She has to allow her faith to accept it. In this, she knows, she is akin to Sigismund. It is the same uncompromising devotion that spurred him to assault, directly, a far greater foe. His consideration was each step, each blow. He focused on what he had to do, second by second, not on the outcome, because the outcome was not his concern. The future is neither here, nor now.
She starts to walk towards the churning fight. There’s no fear left in her. One step, then another, across the copper dust, striding calmly towards a maelstrom of violence that she cannot survive.
At first, she walks alone.
‘Keeler! What are you doing?’ Lord Zhi-Meng calls out behind her. ‘Keeler!’
But others are walking too. One or two at first, then members of the conclave, and whole sections of the halted pilgrimage. They are either following her lead, or they are touched by the same certainty that she has felt. She sees Wereft, and Leeta Tang. They are almost abreast of her, walking in parallel.
Leeta glances across at her, and smiles. ‘North!’ she calls out, and laughs.
Yes, there is a certainty. A strong and calming grace, a collective purpose that can no more be expressed than it can be denied. Behind her, the stilled column of the pilgrimage, that endless river of humanity, stirs and pours after her. There is little panic, and no haste. It follows her as it followed her from the very start.
‘Keeler! Keeler!’ Limping and scurrying Zhi-Meng catches her up, supported by Perevanna. ‘Keeler,’ cries Zhi-Meng, gesturing at the carnage ahead with a dusty hand. ‘They will kill us!’
‘My lord,’ she replies, ‘they can’t kill all of us.’
The Pale King’s host shivers. Bathed in a mantle of ochre dust that it has kicked up, it is trying to clench itself to exterminate the fierce pockets of Sigismund’s attack. Nearly two-thirds of the Seconds have been killed. It is the verge of an outright rout. But the Death Guard wavers. A sense of the approaching mass spreads through it, a distraction, a puzzle, an inexplicable event: thousands of people, tens of thousands, with a column of perhaps millions behind them stretching away as far as the arid horizon, approaching slowly, most of them unarmed, most of them startlingly composed and unafraid.
The traitors begin to turn, struck by indecision and confusion. Some manoeuvre to face the advancing host. In turning, they slacken their focus on the fight, and Sigismund’s depleted forces are able to strike harder and deeper, breaking rank lines from within. The battle becomes clumsy and incoherent, as though the Death Guard’s collective mindset prospered against individuals, but is perplexed by another large group acting in unity.
Some of the XIV line up and begin a repulse. They have no qualms about killing the unarmed and the civilian. It is not a lack of compunction. In their febrile minds, there is no distinction. A servant of the False Emperor is a servant of the False Emperor, in any guise. Once Sigismund and his fellow aggressors were finished, they would have turned on the rest anyway, and commenced a wholesale slaughter.
They are good at killing. They are cultured for it. Bolters and heavy las begin to bark and spit. Holes begin to appear in the leading edge of the pilgrim tide as civilians are cut down or vaporised mid-step. But the inexorable flow of people does not abate.
Keeler sees mass-reactives scream past her. She feels the heat of their burning propellant. She hears the impacts. Blood dots her cheek. She smells fyceline. Las-bolts streak by, some so close she ought to flinch. She does not. She keeps walking.
The Death Guard doubles down. Rates switch to full-auto and rapid. There is nothing they cannot illuminate when they work together. Even a million people.
Keeler keeps walking as dust and smoke fumes back across her. The air is shaking. It is finally time the traitors showed them the respect they deserve. They’ve earned it. There is no longer any shame in death, nor any real pain. None of that matters any more. The only true pain is in failure, in refusal to resist, in loss of faith. She won’t submit. She won’t go quietly. Armed or unarmed, she will stand for what she believes in.
She wonders, almost idly, what she will do when she finally reaches them, if she lasts that long. What could she do against an armed and armoured giant of the Legiones Astartes? She imagines she will grasp and claw and tear with her bare fingers against the unbreakable plate. It will have no effect. One pair of human hands can’t tear down a Traitor legionary. But a million? Two million? Three? Like water lapping against rock, though it takes ten thousand years, the rock will wear away in the end.
It is asymmetric warfare of the most perverse kind, the macabre logic imposed on mankind by the atrocity of Horus Lupercal’s heresy. She will stand, and she will resist, for though the enemy is mighty and her one life is as nothing, the true souls of the Imperial faithful are many and numberless.
You had your chance, traitors. You should have bloody taken it. How do you like these odds?
She balls her fists, ready to do what she can. The chance doesn’t come. She almost feels cheated. The tight ranks of the XIV collapse as they retreat before her. It isn’t fear. She understands that completely. The Death Guard is not afraid of her, or the legions that walk with her. It is simply mystified. It is withdrawing askance, unable to make sense of what is happening, forced into a fall-back effort in order to process this turn of events, this thing that has never happened before.
Sigismund and his bloodied fighting groups take full advantage of the reversal, cutting loose at the enemy now pouring back around them. Leading the harrying action, Sigismund sees that the XIV are trying to quit the field by means of a deep gorge that splits the line of mesas behind their field position. He ascends the gradient, killing as he goes. If the Death Guard withdraw into that geographical cover, they win time to regroup and rethink. They may have reinforcement strengths waiting in the deep shadows of the gorge. He wants to break their resolve and their spines before they reach that safe haven.
He needs time to rethink too. A glance over his shoulder shows him the impossible: the steady advance of the entire pilgrimage column soaking up the traitor resistance like blotting paper laid on a spill of ink. What madness has possessed them all?
Not madness. Whatever it is, he feels it too.

2024.06.06 22:39 Juklok A list of franchises removed from Vimm's Lair.

This is sorted by who took the rom down and not who the publisher is. Sometimes the takedown isn't completely thorough, but searching for and listing every discrepancy isn't worth my time.
Nintendo of America
Sega Corporation
LEGO Juris A/S
Entertainment Software Association
Let me know if I missed anything because given the amount of companies are members of the ESA, its very likely I did.

2024.06.06 12:10 Pristine_Ad7254 Small QoL tricks you realized too late

I'm sure everyone, at some point, found a way of doing something in a much less cumbersome way than they used to. I'm eager to hear yours and I'm sure everyone can learn some tricks. Some might be game changing, others just slightly faster ways of roaming Appalachia. Some useful for newbies, other ones probably even 100+ didn't realize. I'll quickstart with some of them in no particular order.
I'll stop here as maybe I'm already rambling, hope some of you find something useful. Which are your little life hacks?
Editing to include the most voted suggestions:
Please, go to the comment section and give proper credits to these wastelanders!. I'll be completing this section as new tricks are published. Thanks to everybody for their contributions, I learned many new cool tricks as well.

  4. Mixu's Legendary Lords (basically the best LL mod out there)
  5. Mixu's Shadowdancer (neat WElf hero type)

  17. Bad Legendary Characters (adds some bad guys!)
  18. Remove Character Traits Limit (very useful)
  19. Auto Resolve Quest Battles (also super useful!)
  20. Tribes of the North! (Forgot this one, but it's arguably one of the best on here as it adds EVERYTHING you could ever want to norsca)
And here's a top 30 vid with other mods you all may enjoy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8kY6uH79dBo&t=1s&ab_channel=Mecha0turtle
And yes, I have all of these enabled at once. Recommend downloading WH3 Mod Manager and copying everything into Data though.
Honorable Mentions: Legendary Characters 101 Dalmations and Legions of Nagash (Havent been able to get them working with the above mod list)

2024.06.05 23:37 ilmago75 Hungary - Prague Opening

Hungary - Prague Opening
Hungary (Screenshot 1) is an often overlooked faction in Medieval Total War 2 - largely because their truly awful faction colour. But their Eastern European style cavalry archers and the relative ease they can set up their first early chivalric units to complement them, and their semi-open starting position actually make them a really fun faction to play.
I wrote up a little guide on them for those who might want to try them and get a stable start to their game.
The following steps are all based on vh/vh difficulty and are purely strategic (all battles are wins on auto-resolve, obviously good human players can do much better, but these steps are optimised for the autoresolve-minimum). You are advised to avoid relying on auto-resolve with Hungary however, as cavalry archers do legendary poorly in auto-resolved battles.
Hungary starts with only two settlements (the capital Budapest and the castle of Bran), but both have good potential and some room to quickly expand to. (Screenshot 2)
To the north, they have their buddies the Poles, also relative newcomers to the feudal (and Christian) game, sitting north of the fertile Carpathian Basin. They share a similar geostrategic situation and are natural allies both historically and in-game.
To the west, the Germans, who in the previous century brought Hungary's Viking like (but mounted) raids into the heart of the continent to a halt. The HRE is strong, and will go stronger, but in the early game they are going to be busy solidifying their borders all around, so they will be relieved to ally with the annoying Magyars instead of having to deal with them as well.
To the southwest, Venice. No need to introduce Venice, “trustworthy as Venice” - said no MTW2 player ever. They are coming for the Balkans, no matter what, embrace for an eventual backstab. Their starting armies are strong and they have access to Mailed Knights straight away from Ragusa, so rushing into them hastily is not a very good idea.
To the south, Fake Rome, of the Eastern flavour. A mighty empire still, caution is required.
To the East, well, room for expansion mostly, though apart from Kyiv, nothing of much interest. Since the Mongols might well arrive from that direction (Sarkel, if they take the northern route, around turn 70-80), Kyiv is key to hold the eastern hordes (khm, khm) at the river chokepoints (Screenshot 3). It also has a potential to become a very lucrative city in a future line of Black Sea ports (Screenshot 4).
So Hungary, if they manage to maintain good relations with their Catholic neighbours, generally enjoy a good starting location to launch massive attacks and crusades against the infidels of the East (including those purple fake-Romans who are also Christians, but clearly the wrong way).
This opening strategy will address these geopolitical directives with opening moves to solidify the kingdom first.
TURN 1
The first move us for our good king, László the Honourable, (Screenshot 5). We are targeting Zagreb, in Northern Croatia, and trying to beat the Venetians to it. The Venetians, to the southeast of our lands, are infamous backstabbers and they are stubbornly eastbound, they want Zagreb and will come after it. We have 3 turns to get there and besiege it before those pesky Venetians do, so theres no time (moves) to waste. King László thus marches with the entire Budapest garrison across the Danube and the reserve troops southeast of Budapest join him there.
Princess Pioska (misspelled Piroska) heads straight towards Vienna. She will get there in Turn 2. Life in our enlightened modern era is now feudal, princesses are assets, use (monetize) them.
Meanwhile, Prince Kálmán (Screenshot 6) moves from Bran to right under that corner of the Carpathian Mountains - so Bucharest becomes visible from there and still reachable in the same turn. Before he strikes, he can hire a nice batch of mercenaries there, which is advisable, as he's going to go further south. It’s a straight win even on auto-resolve, we have conquered our first village before the end of the first turn, yay. (Screenshot 7)
Our third starting (non-family yet) general, István (Screenshot 8) heads towards Iasi in the northeast, this is going to be Hungary's first rewarded mission anyway, he will reach it Turn 2. There are no mercenaries to hire there, so we immediately build a unit of Hungarian Nobles and two Magyar Cavalry in Bran to back him up, the battle is going to be winnable without them, but with them, it is, again, auto-resolve proof. Our cardinal Ulászló moves with him as converting Iasi is often the first Papal mission for Hungary (and Iasi is low on Christian faith so that is going to help our cardinal as well, he is younger than Pope Gregory, a potential future preferatus, mind).
Moving up north our spy will spot Princess Agnes of Poland. (Screenshot 9) She's heading our way (in all saves if spotted, if unspotted she might not come out FoW ever). Proper wife material, and key to our alliance plans with our Polish buddies. They might very well stick with us all game long, super-reliable faction.
Now just put Budapest and Buchurest taxes to very low (for that crucial early population growth, (Kálmán there can risk a turn and his chivalry adds to growth), build the first farm upgrade in both Budapest and Bran (I know, lots of Bs), and a Wooden Palisade in Bucharest (Again a B. And that awful colour!)
Training wise a Diplomat is a MUST, cavalry in Bran (all three) is only if you are uncomfortable to go into battle with what István has with him.
End turn.
TURN 2
Send the cavalry from Bran after István, they will arrive in Turn 3 (Screenshot 10).
Move Prince Kálmán towards Sophia, and follow him with the army, they can rejoin and besiege it in Turn 3 as well (Screenshot 11).
Pioska can now talk to Vienna. Leopold will either accept the deal (Screenshot 12) or counter with the same but with slightly less money immediately (vh campaign difficulty). That's a strong tie with the Schwartzgelb fake-Romans, and it should secure our western border for a while. And, well, it's money. The sinews of war ARE money.
Iasi is again an auto-resolve proof battle (Screenshot 13) if you have sent the cavalry reinforcements, that is.
And we can meet Agnes of Poland with our new Diplomat and offer the same deal for her to marry Prince Kálmán, securing the North with a firm ally as well (Screenshot 14).
That's our Western and Northern Catholic neighbours allied and bound by marriage, plus a hefty sum of money that will allow us to develop out lands. This turn Iasi (convert to town) and Zagreb (Wooden Palisade), very low taxes both.
Another Diplomat in Budapest - they will return the investment quick.
Zagreb is also an auto-resolve proof battle, this time even without the available mercenaries (Screenshot 15).
Now at the end of Turn 2, we control 5 regions, we have 3 moving armies and two safe borders out of the four.
TURN 3
Our second Budapest Diplomat, as well as our first, starts their journey into Northern Italy (to contact Venice and after that, the Pope, Sicily, Milan and whoever makes it there from the West). The mountain pass might have Venetians or Rebels closing it off, in that case the eastern Diplomat will turn south for the Sava river crossing where King László has just marched. (Screenshot 16).
Build another Diplomat in Budapest. And another until you have 6-8. Diplomacy is important.
And the next farm level upgrade, plus roads or farm upgrades where possible. Turn every castle but Bran to towns first thing. Then roads, then farms. All with very low taxes as long as you can finance that. You'll thank me later.
Prince Kálmán is now besieging Sophia and it will take 4-5 turns to fall. No mercenaries to hire, no reinforcements around, but he can actually afford to just sit it out, and we have reached the purple fake-Roman border anyway, we're not in a hurry to clash with them either. This is going to be our southern border town for a while.
István, having taken Iasi, is a bit of a free agent now. His troops are not (or barely) enough to rush Kyiv, we have no contact with the Pope to call a crusade on nearby Vilnius yet, so the best we can do is to rush him across the land southwest to be around when Venice or Purple Fake-Rome hits or all hell breaks loose in Italy, which is normal there, so it will eventually happen.
And the we have come to a point to explain why this opening is named (by humble me) the Prague Opening.
All these moves aimed to quickly spread out and grow towards the least resistance so far. This is generally considered to be good practice in the early game, grab everything you can from the Rebels before someone else does, and stay safe while you are doing it.
But it is of course all about geostrategy (and money) from the beginning to the end.
This so far looks like a Zagreb Opening, we turned south. If we didn't, Zagreb would have went to Venice, 100% sure. But going straight for it means that we are in time to get Prague as well. Moving our spy West and spotting Prague we will see two weak HRE armies moving north and south of Prague, but they never unite to besiege it yet. We have until turn 7-9 to do so ourselves and blitzing Zagreb allows us to march King László and his cavalry (only, infantry is too slow, we'll get the mercenaries up north), to Prague.
Note that we must not take the suggested path (or we would get bogged down in Viennas control of area), but the one West to the Vienna forest and the Danube River crossing above it.
It will still take 4-5 turns but that is (just) enough.
The armies there (with the available mercenaries) will not be enough to storm it, but the siege can be reinforced or sat out, Prague is well worth the bother. (Screenshot 19).
Once these are done I normally just sit out a bit, develop the economy, keep moving the Diplomats making alliances and hunting down princesses, cashing out and saving up the 16-20k it takes to buy Vienna from the by-then likely broke Schwartzgelb fake-Romans.
That's a core set of regions that can grow citadels quickly (turn Budapest once it reaches Minor City) and choose the history of your choice, you're all set up for doing well in epic wars.
Campaigns into Northern Italy (Screenshot 18), to the Baltic coast (Screenshot 19) can be built immediately around this opening (Screenshot 20), and it is stable and big enough to just strengthen the army even more and take on one of the larger neighbours on our own.

2024.06.05 18:53 bluemarvel99 What's The Longest Amount Of Time You Spent With A Game Before You Realized You Didn't Actually Like It?

That happens with me sometimes. I'll just be playing a game on auto-pilot, just because it happens to be in my backlog and I want to get my money's worth so I just power through it. The biggest culprits are licensed games from a franchise I have a particular fondness for; in this case it's Fist of The North Star: Lost Paradise and Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time.
The Fist of the North Star game is essentially a Yakuza game with a FotNS skin layered on top of it. Even though the main characters are lovingly re-created, I'd say the graphics are generally pretty bad, particularly the backgrounds which have bland textures everywhere. I've never really been a big fan of the combat in the Yakuza games (really stiff-feeling dial-a-combo mechanics with little flexibility) and FotNS isn't much different other than the pressure-point mechanic, which admittedly is pretty cool and carried combat for a while. There does seem to be more juggling potential here than your average Yakuza game but that's not saying much. Even the combat in the Dynasty Warriors-esque Ken's Rage makes this one look very simple & limited in comparison. The open-world and side content I just found bland, repetitive and uninteresting. I can't stress how much this game just feels like Yakuza but with half the budget and love put into it. It felt like corporate slop, and it took me around 30 hours to realize I wasn't actually having fun playing it and put the game down for good.
Samurai Jack: Battle Through Time fared a little better. It captured the vibe of Samurai Jack very well and combat had a bit more to it than you'd expect. It felt like the type of smaller-scale AA game you don't see much of anymore. Still, what the game offered wasn't enough to hold my interest as I put it down one day about half way through and never picked it back up with no regrets. I probably put around 15 hours into this one.
What's the longest amount of time you've spent with a game before realizing you didn't actually like it all that much, and you asked yourself that existential question: "why am I still playing this?"

'Everyone is nervous' about Chinese onslaught - Hyundai
It's an interesting car market to watch in Australia. We don't have tariff protection against cheaper cars as we don't have a domestic auto industry to protect.
So in the next two years, as North America and Europe puts up trade walls against competition from China, more Chinese brands will enter the market here and directly challenge the South Korean and Japanese brands.
While some of the ICE vehicles aren't good at all (am looking at MG), many Chinese EVs are excellent and make Tesla's ageing models look tired. But infrastructure for EVs in Australia is bad (only 27 million people on a whole huge continent) and Australians are turning heavily to hybrids. Toyota dominates there of course and Hyundai has been slow to introduce them into their product line up. (Like so many, I've ordered a Hyundai Kona hybrid - a Car of the Year here. Because of family in remote areas and no solar power on my home, I'm not ready for an EV yet.)
I think many European, US and Japanese brands will soon disappear from the Australian market with a free trade environment and Chinese competition. (Honda is almost obliterated already.) But I think Toyota, Hyundai and Kia will survive. Hyundai has a good product line up and is competitive against MG and BYD, for instance. But, as the article says, who knows what will happen?

2024.06.04 21:44 Low-Entropy History Of Hamburg Hardcore

Hamburg is a more than 800 year old harbor town in the north of Germany. As such, it was always also a hotspot for a wide range of subcultures, cranks and crooks, rowdy sailors, prostitutes, pirates that found their place in shady pubs, back alleys and similar dark places.
I entered Hamburg in 1980 by birth, so I can’t tell you much about the 60s or 70s of Hamburg, but in the 80s, it was a place for anarchists, punks, rioters and similar people – creating the current for places of alternate music and political views to be set up. This is a bit of a back story for what happened in the 90s in Hamburg, regarding the then emerging hardcore techno scene.
Fischkopf
Container Records was a record store in the red light zone of Hamburg – the Reeperbahn – one story above a store for alternate clothing. It was focused on techno music only and one of the largest (or the largest?) of such stores in Hamburg. They also were involved in other things, such as running a record label also named Container. And this Container Records had a sublabel called Fischkopf. The first generation of Fischkopf was a group of people around Martin, the owner of Container Records; I don’t know exactly who was directly involved in running the label, but Cybermouse, DJ Raid and Christoph De Babalon are names I heard over the years (please correct me).
Cybermouse got to Fischkopf because it was noted that he bought only the most extreme and obscure records at the store; something that made the crew think he’d fit right in, apparently. So the first Fischkopf record was released, “Surprise Attack” by Cybermouse. They were all done on an Amiga computer using tracker software and a special FX software; actually, the tracks were first released on a diskette magazine called “Neurowaver” (if you don’t know what a diskette magazine is, ask Google). Cybermouse’s debut was followed by Christoph De Babalon’s debut, the “Love Under Will” EP, named after Aleister Crowley obviously. On it we find some of the most haunting music with “jungle beats” made in this era.
After a few more EPs, the management changed, and Hardy Storz took over. He steered Fischkopf into the direction that brought worldwide acclaim to it. Releasing experimental, intellectual music that at the same time is hardcore techno. In one of the rare interviews with him, he states that he was annoyed by the turn gabber had taken at that time; becoming more dumb, simplistic, macho. And Fischkopf for sure was the opposite of that. Fischkopf had most of the major players in the more refined hardcore scene of those days on it’s rooster: Patric C as Eradicator, Lasse Steen with a variety of aliases, Nawoto Suzuki as Burning Lazy Persons, Taciturne, Amiga Shock Force and EPC, and the Michelson sisters Auto-Psy and No Name. Especially these two female fighters brought some of the most interesting music to this label; tracks that are so complex and structured and finetuned, that the word “hardcore” is almost too brutish for them.
Although the pressing for “Fisch” releases were limited to 500, they quickly got known worldwide in the more underground scenes. After a while also parties were set up by the Fisch crew, again in the red light district of Hamburg. These parties attracted a wide range of performers such as Rage Reset, DJ Entox, La Peste, and many many more. Without going too much into this, let’s just repeat Taciturne’s summary that the amount of fog issued in these nights in the dark, strobe filled rooms would’ve clouded a soccer arena. Even though opposing the “commercial” “Dutch” “gabber” scene, Fischkopf spawned one big hit in exactly that scene; Taciturne’s totem which is still sought after, after all these years. Fischkopf faltered in 1997; the exact reasons are not known, but talk is about disagreement on the direction to take Fischkopf between Hardy and Container; or that Fisch just did not generate enough “dough”. One more release appeared in 1998 (and a test pressing of a “Fisch 26” by Cybermouse), only for Fischkopf to disappear completely after that.
Interesting fact: at one point, Alec Empire and Somatic Responses were planned for a Fischkopf release too.
Listening suggestion: Taciturne – 6 Fragmente In Der Chronologie Des Wahnsinns
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tkM9zheFCl0
Cross Fade Entertainment
DJ Raid, who was also involved in Fischkopf, set up this label with Paul Snowden and Christoph De Babalon. The word “hardcore” only vaguely fits here; this is just brilliant, brilliant subcultural music. The first release was the premier release of Somatic Responses, who took the world by storm in the years (or rather, even decades) that followed. This was still a lot different to their later style: heavy, heavy distorted drums (or noises) in a 4/4 route, with experimental sounds in the vein of early synth experimental music. As fierce as fierce gets.
The second release was done by Christoph De Babalon and Paul Snowden, aptly named “We Declare War”. Paul Snowden’s site has some of the most distorted acid, and CdB brings us assault troop breakbeat tracks here, going on from his Fischkopf release. In a rare German TV interview, CdB stated CFET to him is “auteur music”, in the sense that the artist take their music in their own individualist direction, regardless of trends. And the releases give proof of that.
Later, we find some fine breakcore releases on CFET. I can’t find much info on this, but according to defunct websites, the CFET personnel was once involved in the “Repulsion Parties”, taking place inside the “Rote Flora”, the most infamous squat in Hamburg. Line ups included artists like E-De Cologne, Alec Empire and Somatic Responses. CFET left Hamburg with Jan (CdB) and Paul moving to Berlin.
Listening suggestion: Christoph De Babalon & Paul Snowden – We Declare War
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lC30j9q6_nU
Nordcore
No Hamburg hardcore history text is complete without Nordcore. Nordcore started as “Die Tekknokraten” organizing small techno and hardcore parties, changing the name later. As Nordcore they ran a weekly hardcore club called “The Box”, in the midst of Hamburg. I think this was one of the only regular hardcore clubs worldwide that existed in the 90s outside of Netherlands and Belgium; the Bunker in Berlin being another important location. Almost all the big names in the hardcore, gabber and speedcore scene played in the box; Speedfreak, the PCP crew including Smash? (sic), BSE DJ team, Laurent Hô, E-De Cologne… And also a lot of the Dutch DJs.
Those were speedy times, but The Box had to close in 1996; much too soon! The parties got bigger though, and Nordcore moved to the Markthalle, usually a location for rock and pop bands, with their “Operation Nordcore” parties, again attracting all the “big name” performers to play.
With some breaks in between, Nordcore continues their hardcore journey to this day.
They also ran a record label, called Nordcore Records; and, beginning with issue 5, compiled the “Terrordrome” CDs, the biggest name in hardcore CDs in the 90s, only eclipsed by Thunderdome.

Blut
After Hardy left Container, he set up his own record store, called Otaku Records, again with a “Hardcore” label, called Blut Records; and in many way a spiritual successor to Fischkopf Records. The rooster was similar too: Taciturne, Nawoto, Amiga Shock Force and EPC. We also find a record that was originally planned as Fischkopf 25 here, Taciturne with Ebizieme.
The sound was taken a step farther in extremism with this label, so be prepared for a noise assault on your ears; but, again, a sensible one. The record store itself was also a good destination to shop for obscure and not so obscure hardcore, speedcore and breakcore records in Hamburg, with it’s own special charme. Blut never officially ended, but there was no release after Blut 6; a shame!

Hardcore didn’t end in the 90s in Hamburg, but that, my child, is written in another tome…

2024.06.04 17:56 FarmWhich4275 An Alien Plays... Slime Rancher

"Great days and glorious victory! My name is Spifflemonk and welcome to Slime Rancher! I was given this game so I could 'relax' between bouts of suffering induced by Subnautica. So thank you... erm..."
Spiff looks at his notes.
"Thank you Blitz! Oh... another StarTuber? Hm... I seem to have a fanbase within a fanbase. Either that or people really do enjoy watching me suffer."
Spiff gives the camera his signature all consuming death stare and starts the game. He stares at the title screen for a bit as he tries to figure out what the hell he is looking at. Its Beatrix standing proud with her vacpack, while dozens of small slimes fall from the sky and bounce around, making cute noises and leaving stains on the ground and walls.
"What.... Am I looking at!? These things are 'slimes'? What am I supposed to do with them exactly? What's 'ranching' anyway? Well... I guess we find out."
Spiff starts a new game, chooses the icon for the Honey Slime as his save file, names it Spifflemonk and starts the game. He is too distracted trying to figure out what the hell's going on, he fails to read the story intro and simply appears in the ranch, ready to play.
"OH! Oh my! I'm in already... Okay. I guess I need to get going. Theresa tutorial? Okay then uhh... press that button to walk..."
He follows the tutorial and lets out an odd squeak as he cavs a slime into the first storage slot. He appears genuinely confused and spends a few minutes shooting a slime out, vaccing it up again, then shooting it back out. He watches the slimes leave slime puddles everywhere and tries to understand why.
"What... is this? Okay... food? Okay food. So take food, put slime in a pen, shoot food at slime. Simple enough."
He grabs a carrot nearby, shoots it at a pink slime and the slime poops out a Plort.
"WHAT!?"
Spiff grabs another slime, another carrots and produces another plort. He groans in frustration and facepalms.
"I have been in this scene for long enough to know that humans have this odd fixation with how funny their bodily functions are. Are you telling me THIS WHOLE GAME IS ONE BIG ADORABLE POOP JOKE!?"
Spiff collects another slime, feeding it a Hen-hen. The animal lets out a terrified cluck and produces a Plort in response. Spiff collects it and resumes playing.
"FINE. Let's keep going. At least the game is cute. The slimes are adorable. They make many booping noises. I like the booping."
Spiffle sighs in surrender and plays the game, very quickly figuring out how simple it really is. Find slime. Feed slime. Money. Rinse and repeat. He collects a few slims from the nearby nest, an oddly shaped hive-like structure and grabs some PogoFruit and Carrots for use later. He does this for a while longer and starts exploring options for plots.
"Let's see now. This thing is the Corral. Okay then. High walls... makes it harder for them to jump out. Oh I like that. Music box calms them down. Air Net makes them harder to bounce out. Solar shield is for... a special kind of slime. Okay. Plort collector and Auto-feeder. Oh... those two will be most useful!"
For now, Spiff hasn't got enough money and buys two new farm plots, one growing carrots, one growing Pogo-fruit. He then sets out to find new slimes and enter the rest of the games world. He moves around, eventually encountering the entrance to the Quarry and finds a Rock Slime.
"Oh, hello! What are you? Youre blue and spiky! Come here! Let me vac you up! Okay... Rock Slime? Oooh... these are kinda cute! They're all pointy. Will it hurt me if I-OW!"
Spiff shoots the slime out and walks towards it to try to get a closer look, only for it to hurt him. It's only a few points of damage but Spiff learns the lesson.
"Okay... so it's not THAT simple... Some slimes are cute, but deadly. Im just gonna vacuum this one up then..."
Spiff vacs up a few rock slimes and encounters a Tabby Slime in the process. He stops in his tracks as he hears the Tabby Slime meow like a cat.
"What... was that? Is it this thing? Wha- a... Tabby Slime? What's a Tabby?"
The slime bounces around, mewing and meowing, and grabs a Pogofruit nearby and plays with it. Spiffles eyes go wide, his cheeks change color and he pauses the game.
"Wh... what's going on!? Why are my cheeks warm!? Why is my heart rate so high? This isn't a scary game! I don't get like this! Whats going on!?"
Spiff is the first alien to experience the concept of "D'Aaaaawww!" On camera, and is blushing, his eyes are bulging to take in as much cuteness as possible and his heart is racing.
"Okay.. Okay I have no idea why, but apparently I really like this slime. So Let's go..."
Spiff vacs up a few Tabby Slimes and heads back to the ranch. He sells the plorts he has, gaining enough money to buy a plot and upgrade it with High Walls. He puts the Rock Slimes and Tabby Slimes in one spot owing to how the other plot he has is full of Pink Slimes. He tosses some Pogofruit in and waits to see what happens. Nothing.
"Hmm... Am I missing something? Is there a thing I can look at?"
Spiff pauses the game and notices the SlimePedia button in the pause menu and takes a look at it.
"OOOhhh... Okay... Rock Slimes only eat Veggies with a Heart Beet... whatever that is, being their favorite. The Tabby Slime only eats meat! Okay... Need to.. Oh here!"
Spiff finds a Carrot nearby and feeds it to one of the Rock Slimes. A Plort is produced and as he tries to grab it, a Tabby Slime chows down and turns into a RockTabby Largo. Spiff is taken by surprise and takes damage from the large creature as a result. The RockTabby is - as one would expect - a combination of a Rock Slime and a Tabby Slime, and looks as you would expect. Spiff responds with both fear and cuteness, the combination of a blue spiky slime making him Squee.
"Oh god look! What is that? Can I pick it up? I can! Okay... Largo... What's that? It's so cute! It's all... blue and spiky with fluffy ears! What is this game!? Can I carry you around? I can't. Damn. So what is a Largo?"
Spiff looks at the Slimepedia after playing with the Tabby Slimes for a while, figuring out more of the game's mechanics. Which were ridiculously simple.
"Is this another one of those 'so simple its silly' games? Find slime, feed slime, sell poop of slime and... that's it? Seriously? Welp...."
Spiff decides to just go with it and quickly figures out how to min-max the slimes he has, going through the motions of simply exploring what is available. In short order, he finds his first Gordo Slime - which is a massive immobile variant of a standard slime.
"Good GOD that thing is fat! My goodness!"
Spiff notices the giant pink slime on an island peninsula off the first area and heads towards it, noticing a path nearby. He ignores it for now and returns to the task at hand and approaches the giant puddle of wobbly jelly that is the Pink Gordo Slime.
"You sir. Are. FAT. Fat and wobbly. What do I do with you then... Uhhh... Slimepedia says feed until you explode. Okay then, it's a pinky boi, he eats anything. Okay, I shall be back!"
Spiff rumbles around collecting two full slots of food, Carrots and Pogofruit and shoots them at the gordo. After emptying both slots, the last two carrots bounce off and the gordo explodes, splitting into 8 pink slimes, three boxes and a floating key.
"Oh hello! A Key!? Okay then, imma collect THAT, then let's grab all of these slimes and put them somewhere. What's in these boxes? How do I open them..."
Spiff faffs about for a bit then learns how to open the boxes, receiving a few carrots, a Tabby Slime and one HeartBeet as a reward.
"A HeartBeet!? Don't my Rockies like those!? OOOOO I can feed that... No. Stop being stupid Spiff, we can put that in the farm plot then get more of them! To home!"
Spiff shakes his head and charges back home, deleting the carrots and planting the Heart Beets. He uses some extra carrots he has left over and feeds the rest, turning the last few Slimes into RockTabby Slimes.
"Alright... Gods I cannot fathom how... simple this game is! It looks complex on the outside but... SO simple! I wonder what would be the best combinations to use? Can I make it easy on myself and make it so there's only veggie or fruit slimes?"
Spiff learns pretty fast and catches on to the games mechanics with ease as he starts figuring out how to min/max the games plort mechanics, figuring out the best amount of Largo's to have in a corral at one time, in his case, 8. Spiff spends some time farming and gathers about 8000 coins over a few days, collecting random items and exploring, eventually finding the entrance to the Indigo Quarry.
"OOhhh okay then. Well, time to go in here I guess. I think this is where I will get to use my Key thing I found. So where do I- GAH!"
Spiff is attacked by three Feral Largos. Unable to do anything because he has no food on him, he runs around like a headless chicken trying to escape them. He gets cornered, taking a decent amount of damage before finally finding a way out.
"Oh my goodness! Silly creatures! Why were they so angry!? What did I do!?"
Spiff carries on through and unlocks the first Gate to the quarry, the first of many. The area around him is purple - his favorite color, and he is immediately giddy on entering the area. He is drawn immediately to the massive turquoise crystal formations poking out from walls and floors.
"Oh my! These crystals! Do these exist in real life!? Now, for all my non-human viewers, humans have this thing where most of their media is based on experiences or mythology. If something like this exists in a game, it's very likely that it exists in reality. I would LOVE to visit something like this!"
Spiff marvels at the dated but pretty graphics of the goofy game and stares at crystals for a bit. He quickly finds two of the most dangerous slimes, The Boom Slime and The Rad Slime in the quarry. He grabs two Rads, Six Booms and finds an Oca Oca among the veggies in the area.
"My! That's efficient! Slimepedia says these are exploding slimes and radioactive slimes... Well that's... Not nice. Still, it should be easy. These Oca Oca things are the favorite food of the radiation slimes so, there we go! Efficiency! Let's go see what's over here-WHAT."
Spiff wanders over to the pond nearby and has his first encounter with a Puddle Slime. It's a slime that squeaks like a toy and purrs like a cat underwater, in the shape of a little puddle, hence the name.
"My GOD that thing is cute! What is that? A... Puddle slime? It's a slime that lives in a puddle or pond. Okay then. MINE. The cuteness is all MINE!"
Spiff runs around and grabs three Puddle Slimes and rushes back home, unable to get past the bridge to the next location. He spends a decent amount of his money buying a new corral and farm plot for the new slimes and a Pond for his new favorite pets, The Puddles.
"Sooo cute! This game seems so... family friendly! Which is a big change from horrors such as Zomboid or Rimworld. But it can't be that simple though so... I need to see something before I go further."
Spiff keeps wandering about, once again towards the quarry carrying a load of Heart Beets for the Rock Slime Gordo he passed by earlier in a cave. After popping the Gordo he unlocks a teleporter pad.
"What's this swirly thing? What happens if I step on it?"
Spiff steps in and is instantly returned to a spot next to the market back home. By this time, the first day is ending and it's almost night time. This is where Spiff encounters his first enemy - the Tarr Slime.
"Oh look! It's a new slime! It... looks strange though. but these are like living slime creatures so I suppose that's not abnormal. What slime is-OW! It attacked! Get away!"
The Tarr attacks Spiff and bites him a few times before Spiff grabs it and shoots it away. Spiff looks on in horror as a Tarr nearby grabs a slime with strange slimy tentacle like appendages and then eats it.
"A slime that EATS other slimes!? GET AWAY FROM MY BOUNCIES!!!"
Spiff gets angry and grabs all the Tarrs in the area and flings them into the ocean nearby. He nearly died on account of taking so much damage from wrangling them to where he could throw them.
"Where does that come from? Wait a minute, Slimepedia... A Tarr slime? A slime that appears when a Largo of two different slimes eats a plort from a third different slime. Oh... So these things are a form of population control built into the game? That's an interesting mechanic. Hmmm... Alright. That's all for this one. I'm satisfied."
Spiffs outro plays with a smile.
TOP COMMENT: Slime Rancher eh? Fun game, very fun indie game! SR is one of the best 'relax and turn brain off' kinds of games. SR 2 might also be fun for you. Look forward to the next episode of Subnautica!
___________________________________________________________________
The video starts and Spiffs Intro plays. The cameras open and its Spiff and one other Eridani in a split screen. The screen to the left is Spiff, the screen to the right is the other one, who is clearly a lot smaller in stature and demeanor.
"Great days!" Spiff says.
"And Glorious victory!" Comes the squeaky kid voice from the other.
"I am Spifflemonk, and after much deliberation and showing my wife the game, she has finally agreed to allow my lovely little daughter to play a human game! As a consequence, say hello to Mini-Monk!" He says with a strangely happy grin.
"Hiii!" The child squeaks happily and waves at the camera.
The camera zooms out to see the child, around a quarter of her fathers height, sitting in his lap on a pillow in Spiff's usual seat, the camera making sure both are fully visible. The child is adorable, has very light blue, almost cyan skin tone and big bright pink eyes, and in human terms is the age of about 8 years old. The games screen starts up, and Spiff goes for a New Game, this one modded with some Quality Of Life and Graphics mods.
"Yes yes, I have my own save game where I will be finishing the game vanilla. But this is necessary! I have been looking for MONTHS to find a game friendly enough for my daughter to play, both in terms of content and mechanics, and I finally found one! But, as per my Wife's request, she isn't allowed to play it without me here."
Spiff smiles at the camera and shows the child how to use the keyboard controls, teaching her what certain symbols of the standard English Alphabet are for on the keyboard. He mostly stays hands off, only really intervening when she's lost or presses the wrong key by accident.
"So I vacuum up these things and stuff? Does it hurt them?" She asks.
"Nope! Doesn't hurt them. Slimes dont hurt apparently."
"And... I feed them like this?" She asks as she puts a slime in the Corral and feeds it a carrot.
"Yup! Then you take its poop and sell it." Spiff replies with a smirk.
She looks up at him with a confused scowl. "Seriously? you're making me play a game about slime poop?"
"It's a bit more in depth than that sweetie but that's basically it. Get slime, feed food to slime, slime poops out these things called 'Plorts', then you sell the plorts. Plorts are slime poop." Spiff smiles down at her.
"Are there blue ones? I like blue."
"Oh there's lots of blue ones! Even a whole blue/purple place you can find!" He replies.
"Mine."
Spiff barely holds in a chuckle as she excitedly goes about the game. Spiff does most of the 'grind' elements or talks her around while she's in his lap, so she gets to enjoy the exploration aspect more. He shows her how to set up a farm of Pink Slimes and shows her the basics, before allowing her to move on to other spots. Eventually, she comes across the entrance to the Indigo Quarry cave in the second area, and finds a Rock Slime.
"It's blue! What is it?" She asks, then vacs it up.
Spiff, being the only one in the room that can read Human English, explains as they go. "That's a rock slime. It's a slime that has rocks and minerals in it and eats veggies."
"It... eats veggies? and it's a slime made of rock. Whaaa?"
"Don't question it, ginky, this game is about farming slime monster poop. Don't expect it to make sense, just enjoy playing it!" Spiff says with a laugh.
"Okay..." She shrugs and resumes playing.
She grabs a few more Rock Slimes and a few Hen-Hens from the local area and moves on, looking around her at various things to figure out what they are. Spiff stays mostly hands off, simply trying to let her explore and enjoy. Until she finds a Tabby Slime. The meowing and squeaking, as well as the playful behavior makes the child's face light up.
"Whats THAT its so cute!" She hastily gabbles as she vacs up a Tabby Slime nearby.
"That's a Tabby Slime! It's a slime inspired by a creature that lived on Earth once called the 'cat'." Spiff said.
"This actually exists!? Can we have one!?" She squeals and stares her father down with puppy eyes.
Spiff laughs heartily in a fatherly laugh. "Hell to the heck no we aren't. Cats are evil. Humans have told me cats are evil. I've seen cats. I don't let evil things near my children. Not even if they are cute. BUT... There are cat based games humans have made. You can have a virtual cat. We can try some of those in the future, if your mother allows it."
"Okay." The child sighs and resigns herself, both defeated at the failure to get a cat, and also happy at the prospect of other cats somewhere else.
She wrangles a few Tabby Slimes and returns to the Ranch to put them in their pens. The squeaking and meowing sounds coming from the Tabby Slimes makes the child go giddy and start an adorable giggle fit as she vacs one Tabby up, then throws him out again to listen to the adorable noises. This carries on for a bit longer than one would expect and Spiff looks into the camera with a knowing fatherly smirk and rolls his eyes with a smile.
The child's giggling is cut short when eventually, one of the Tabby Slimes eats a Rock Slimes Plort and becomes a Largo. The large blue cat/rock slime combo takes her by surprise.
"HEY! Wh-where’d my cat go? What's that? Why is it big?"
Spiff looks down at her with a smirk. "You'll figure it out. This game is a tiny bit more complicated than you think."
She looks back at the game and tries a few things. She flings a plort at the RockTabby, and nothing happens. Then she grabs a Hen-Hen and the Largo isn't hungry, so nothing happens. She then takes a Tabby Plort and flings it at the Largo. It bounces and hits a Rock Slime, that then eats it and turns into a RockTabby Largo.
"OOOOhhhh kay... So these things can be two in one? It can be a... RockCat Slime?" She asks.
"Yup. But be caref-"
"What happens if I do this though..." She says as she picks up a Pink Plort and yeets it at the Largo, creating a Tarr Slime.
The black mass of wobbly slime begins the mass consumption of the slimes in the pen and she squeals in terror and anger at the sight. Spiff pauses the game and gives her a cuddle to calm her down.
"He's eating my slimies!" She cried between sobs.
"Now now little bug, that's not how a Lady acts is it!? No 'Tis not! So, watch. They aren't scary at all." Spiff says and grabs a Tarr, then yeets it into the ocean behind the Ranch. He pauses the game again and looks down at her.
"Is it gone?" she asks.
"Nope. there's still more there. Now you and I both know that you're way too old to be cowering in my lap like this! Ladies don't behave like this. Are you a lady?" He says, smirking.
"I am!" She squeals.
"Prove it! Take those Tarrs and throw them into the ocean! Prove that, just like a lady, you can take care of your problems!" Spiff commands with a smirk.
She squeals in an adorable warrior's roar and grabs the Tarrs one by one, throwing them off the edge into the ocean. She cringes a bit in fear each time she grabs one but manages to hold her own and saves her slimes from further Tarr-ification. In the end, only a few are lost. She holds her tiny hands high and yells the Eridani word for 'Victory!' and carries on playing the game, eventually making it to the Moss Blanket Gate.
Spiff however, ends it there as she has now been playing for two hours.
"Okay then, well, that's all for now." He says, pausing and saving the game.
"AAAwwww nooo! I wanna play more!" She protests.
"No. Remember what happened that time I got hauled away by the funny police? That's what happens when you play human video games. You forget who you are sometimes. NO. Not happening to my little one. You get two hours a day, maximum. That's the rule. Now run along. Tomorrow your chair arrives, I had it made specially for you, so you don't have to sit in my lap all the time." He says, stern and direct.
"Okay... darn it..." She says with a sad frown and walks out the door.
Spiff looks at the camera and smiles broadly, then the channel outro plays.
TOP COMMENT: Thatta boy. That's how a dad do. She is ADORABLE! I was NOt expecting the cute. That was… refreshing :)
______________________________________________________
"Great days and glorious victory! My name is Spifflemonk and welcome back to Slime Rancher! Back to a moment of rest after a... close encounter with a... certain very very large spider in a game called Grounded."
Spiffle visibly shudders in terrified disgust.
"In any case, we're going back to the ranch! Mods for my daughter's save are disabled so we can work in a base game as most people say I should during my first play, so here we go."
Spiff returns to the game and wastes no time going back to min-maxing, figuring out the Upgrade and jetpack system in short order, using it to acquire more slimes. He quickly went through and grabbed a few more slimes for a better payoff, getting a farm that was relatively self-sustaining.
"So, here is the best option that I have found. A maximum of eight slimes per corral with a fully upgraded farm plot to sustain them seems to be the best option so I can continue to explore the game without grinding too much. That's a decent pace I think. Let me take you on a tour!"
Spiff heads towards the ranch and shows off the stock. Eight Largos in each, with a farm plot feeding it, and four corrals on the main farm. All are fully upgraded as best as possible.
"This one has RockTabby's! They eat Heart Beets! This one has RadBooms, Rad slimes and Boom slimes. Dangerous but fed with Oca Oca for a good payday! AThis one has a new slime in it! The HoneyHunter! A Hunter slime which I found off camera yesterday, and another one called the Honey Slime, which eats these Mint Mango things. These are my favorites! Look! They go invisible! You can only see eyes!"
He shows off the honey flavored cat-like slimes going invisible and giggles inanely at the sight.
"So cute! And here, New slimes! I found these while exploring some caves near the Quarry. They are Crystal Slimes... which by itself is AWESOME! But while around at night, I found these ones, which were Phosphor Slimes. These guys were hard to figure out and then I understood the Solar Shield upgrade. That... hurt a bit. After losing three stocks of Phosphor Slimes."
Spiff scoffs and shows off the slimes. He moves away to a back area near the Plort Market and shows off several Hen-Hen coops, including a full Corral that's completely full to the top with squawking and squirming Hen-Hens.
"I'm going to toss a slime in there one day... see what happens!"
Spiff laughs in a rather disturbingly sadistic manner and resumes work, going to the dockyard further down.
"Both of these areas I had to unlock with cash. Wasn't easy but I got the farm going. Now I have a lot of cash I've no idea what to do with. In any case, here we go! The Puddle Ranch!"
The last four plots are made up of ponds, one of which has a dozen Puddle slimes in it at once.
"They are so cute! Yes I know you can't get anything out of them if there's more than four in a pond, but I keep finding more and they're so CUTE! Look at da little puddle! In any case I also have this. An incinerator. No idea what its for but I guess i'll find out."
Spiff fangirls around the Puddle Slimes for a while and leaves the Ranch, grabbing four individual Plorts and heads to the North. Here he finds the Slime Portal, surrounded by Slime statues, each one having a slot in it that contains a Plort.
"I am ashamed to say It took me a while to figure this out. But you take plorts corresponding to the slime statue and... poof. Now... what do it do?"
Spiff watches as the Portal opens, a cute song plays and the gate slides open to allow him access to the rest of the map. He enters and finds The Ancient Ruins - a puzzle maze of shifting gates and twisting passages. Thankfully he has one Slime Key left, so he can essentially skip the puzzle this place offers and go straight to the Glass Desert. Well that is until he encounters a Quantum Slime.
"What... Is this yellow slime? Is it a gold slime or-QUANTUM SLIME!? WHAT!?"
He stares at the camera in his signature 'you know too much' glare and watches what the slime does. It phases out of existence and teleports itself to another spot nearby.
"A teleporting slime!? How does that make any sense!? HOW???"
Spiff stares at the slime for a bit and just says 'fuck it' and starts exploring the area, grabbing a few Slimes. He finds a Phase Lemon and struggles for a while, eventually giving up and consulting the wiki to figure out how to get one and then resumes exploring. The entire time he grumbles about how annoying this whole thing is, and arrives at the gate. He puts in the key and uses the slimes he has on him plus a few Pogofruit to get Quantum Plorts and finishes the puzzle, entering the Glass Desert.
"Well... This is... very empty, barren and dead compared to where I came from. Hmm..."
Spiff isnt wasting time, heads straight to the wiki and figures out what to do. He seems to be impatient for some reason and is rushing through it, grabbing slimes and securing resources he thinks he might need, following the breadcrumb trail left by all the strange floating holographic H signs left everywhere. Eventually, he scrambles through the huge maze of stuff everywhere, unlocks a few gates and reads the last sign he can find left by the mysterious 'H'.
"OOOhhhh so that's how that works! Okay so the story i-WHAT THE FU-"
Spiff is grabbed by four sets of tiny Eridani hands and dragged out of his chair. Four Eridani children, including his daughter Mini-Monk, scramble into his seat, exit, save the game and start a new game in his place. Each child is around the same age.
"CUTE SLIMIES!!!" The children excitedly chirp as Spiff just sighs in annoyance.
"Uggghhh... kids."
Spiffles outro plays, along with a short, but adorable slideshow of him showing pictures of each of the kids taking turns playing the game, enjoying themselves, figuring out how everything works and trying to handle a swarm of Tarr slimes due to a Plort accident at the Ranch.
TOP COMMENT: I think I've died and gone to cute. Your kids are adorable! Ready to go back to Subnautica yet Spiff? I WANT TO SEE YOU FACE THE LEVIATHAN.
Spiffs response: FUCK YOU AND FUCK YOUR GIANT SCARY DEEPWATER CURSED FISH. And no those aren't my kids, it's just my daughter and a few friends. Only one is mine.
Response: Oh god I'm gonna LOVE watching you play Phasmophobia! That might kill you! LOL
Spiffs response: EVIL. HUMANS ARE EVIL.
((Authors note: BEFORE YOU ASK no i don't have kids and i'm not expecting any. This was just something funny I wanted to write. So here you go.))

Ticketübersicht / Ticket overview
If you’re inexperienced with public transit or want an explanation on how the system works, take a look at our wiki. Be aware that the wiki article is a few years old, so the prices aren’t correct any more, as is the information regarding covid. We’ll get to it… eventually…
The Deutschland-Ticket (49€ Ticket) is a subscription-based ticket, meant for regular commuters, not for tourists. While you can purchase it as a tourist, only do so if you know what you’re doing, as buying it for a very specific time frame can be tricky, and failure can lead to paying for multiple tickets, and/or not purchasing a ticket for the desired time frame.
Unterkunft / Where to stay

Accommodation in the suburbs or surrounding towns (Starnberg, Augsburg, Rosenheim, etc.) can be cheaper on very popular dates and, thanks to good public transport connections, still give you the option to travel to and from the stadium on match day.

2024.06.04 11:22 ucNNtB3li3v3T1hs Carista issue

Hey all. I picked up a Carista Evo a few weeks back during the sale.
Device connects to the car, pulls the vin and everything, but I cannot seem to get any of the settings to actually change. I go into the app, change a value on something cosmetic (say dash color), it shows it made the change, and yet, nothing happens in the car.
I'm not getting errors about it. I have on certain swaps (such as a dash variant being rejected.) Before I jump to their customer service, I wondered if anyone else had an idea.
I've got a 2023 SE if that matters in North America. I'm using the Android version as well.
One other thing I noticed - the car does not like sitting without the engine running after about 5 minutes and complains about battery drain while I fiddle with the Carista App. Never has a problem cranking after I turn it off and go start it later, but I do find that odd behavior.
I wonder if Android Auto could be causing the app and dongle to desynchronize possible. Appreciate any advice here if you've experienced the weirdness.

2024.06.04 02:32 Bolivaguay NJ Lotus dealer

NJ Lotus dealer
So I went to my first Lotus dealer today, and to sum it up, I was disappointed. Quite surprised Lotus has something like this.
I have been to car dealerships of all different price levels. From everyman to luxury, I have seen it all. Lotus of North Jersey in Summit, New Jersey, was honestly the cheapest looking dealership I have ever been to. It literally is a small building next to a Volvo dealership, and I assume they share a service center, since it's owned by the same pepole. The showroom lacks any Lotus identity and reminded me of some high end photo studio for models, since it was just plain white and looked like it was a plain building that needs serious renovations to be a car dealership at all, let alone one for a brand like Lotus. And at the center of the dealership, was a Jeep Grand Wagoner. I am confused. I can't believe some New Jersey, high end auto dealer person like Paul Miller or Ray Catena hasn't picked up this brand, because I know those 2 would treat a brand like Lotus better. They both have nice dealerships for their brands on major highways. Honestly, seeing this place and knowing it's serving the wealthy client base of Northern New Jersey and New York City, I expected way better.

Perks

Heroic Perception (Free)
Nothing gets past you anymore; ambushes are a thing of the past, and people will have a hell of a hard time hiding anything from you. You can see in the dark with how good your eyes are, with the rest of your senses equally as formidable. Your powers of perception will allow you to pick the easiest locks or set and disarm some common traps even without any special training in those fields, and with the right training you could learn to shoot out someone’s eyes from over a hundred yards away... with a pistol. At night.
Heroic Agility [200/800 CP]
You’re practically a blur now, ducking and dodging in and out of firefights like greased lightning. With your dexterity, you could even “dodge bullets” by moving out of the path of the bullet before it’s fired, or maybe even afterwards if you’re lucky. You’ll find that you have a natural talent with all weapons, including your fists, as well as subtler arts like stealth or thievery; however talent is no replacement for training.
Tag skills: Energy Weapons, Barter, Sneak (Free)
Just as important as your SPECIAL stats are Skills, which consist of some of the most common or useful skills in the wasteland. Shocking, right? You may “tag” three skills for free, receiving a substantial bonus to your ability to use that skill, as well as making it far easier to learn new things relating to it or developing new techniques related to that skill. You can also “tag” a fourth skill for 100 CP, and can “tag” more skills afterwards for 200 CP each.
Awareness (Free)
You’re capable of sizing up your enemies with just a glance, getting all sorts of information with just a brief look. Not just obvious stuff, like how injured they are or what they’re wearing, but more subtle things like what weapons they have or what they’re carrying on their person.
Silent Death [300/500 CP]
You’re a warrior of the shadows; while some prefer to face their enemies head on, you know the value of killing unseen. Your footsteps are entirely silent, allowing you to rush through the darkness unheard, and if you can attack an enemy from behind you’ll find that your attacks are twice as effective as they would normally be. Lastly, you’re capable of devising or finding inventive ways to kill your opponents, from setting off the self-destruct in their military base to something as simple as using dynamite to bury them alive in a cave.

Items

Fallout Starting Gear (Free)
You get a 10mm pistol and 72 10mm Hollow Point rounds, a simple, non-armored outfit of your choice, a week’s worth of food and water,
Motion Sensor (Free)
A hand-held motion sensor, this device aids in the detection of nearby enemies. While travelling it can help one avoid enemies very handily, but needs to be used in conjunction with a Pip-Boy to track enemies.
Electronic Lock Pick [50/450 CP]
A highly advanced lock pick designed for doors that are electronically locked and require key-cards or access codes rather than keys. It can’t be used on regular doors, but won’t break from overuse.
Stealth Boy 3001 [150/300 CP]
A highly advanced experimental piece of military hardware, allegedly reverse-engineered from something the Chinese used; the Stealth Boy 3001 was created by RobCo as a personal stealth device, and can generate a modulating field around its wearer that transmits reflected light from one side of an object to another- essentially making the wearer blend in with their surroundings.
Deathclaw Nest [300/0 CP]
You’ve somehow stumbled upon a deathclaw’s nest. While normally you might have to worry about getting torn apart by a furious mother deathclaw defending her babies, it seems mama’s not around. You could have yourself a lot of omelets... or, if you let the eggs hatch, you’ll find that the young deathclaws will somehow see you as their mother. If you keep them safe, you’ll find yourself in control of your own deathclaw pack in only a few years. Not only that, but they’ll be remarkably intelligent even for a deathclaw, and capable of following orders like a dog would. The nest and deathclaws will follow you.

Companion Imports

Companion Import [200/-200 CP]
You can import an old companion, or create a new one for 50 CP, giving them 800 CP to spend as well as all of the discounts and freebies that you would get. You can also recruit a canon character for the same price, though you’ll need to convince them to come along with you and they won’t get any CP to spend here. Imported Companions

Drawbacks

Hunted (Master's Mutant Army) [300/100 CP]
One of the big factions in the region- either the Brotherhood of Steel or the Master’s Mutant Army- have decided that you need to die for the good of the wasteland’s future. You’ll be facing parties of Brotherhood Paladins armed with the heaviest weapons available or similarly armed Mutants leading packs of Centaurs and Floaters with regular frequency during your stay here, even if you wipe their faction out. You’ll face at least one band a week; possibly more if you linger in their territory.

Origin

Origin: Loot Or perhaps you’re looking for Loot? The biggest guns, the most magnificent suits of armor, or just one of every kind of Nuka Cola made in Pre-War America, whatever the case is: you’re here for the shinies. And as is often the case, mods can both add whole new treasures to look for or improve the benefits from what’s already there.

Perks

Tool King (Free)
Starting with a cartload of random junk and ending with high-quality ammunition or power cells, cutting-edge improvements to power armor, overcharged laser weaponry or even entirely new kinds of science is practically trivial for the average Fallout protagonist… yet their talents pale compared to yours. This Perk grants you immediate access to pretty much any kind of crafting shown in the Fallout series: from Hand Loader to Science! and Chemist to Robotics Expert, if it somehow involves building things out of other things (from guns to ammo to even entire buildings), you’ve got it - including perfectly memorized designs for the kind of components and tools you might need, like the Robotics Workbench or Nuka-Cola Mixer station. In fact, you’re good enough that you’ll never make mistakes while doing this type of crafting (assuming someone doesn’t start shooting at you or some such), and you’ll be perfectly aware of where you were in the process if you do find yourself interrupted and have to continue later on.
Bobby Pins And Boot Scripts [200/800 CP]
Enjoy everything, collect anything, and above all else: if you’re not supposed to have it, that just makes it more valuable. Often, the best and most valuable items for your hoard (metaphorical or literal) are those locked behind some pretty solid security. But you’ll get at them. Master level locks and computer systems are powerless to keep you out, the good old bobby pin or reboot interrupt letting you get your hooks into those defenses and turn them aside with ease. But more than that - you’ll find that you can use similar tricks on any kind of security system you might encounter in the future, be it the vaults of ancient civilizations or advanced firewalls built by alien societies that would otherwise laugh at the Robco termlink loopholes you’re so familiar with. If it’s meant to keep greedy hands away, you’ll have ways to get through.

Items

Pre-War Relics [50/750 CP]
Nuclear Armageddon (Free)
Ah, Fallout. You’re here for the world, but before the world came the games - and why not get those, too? You receive a full collection of all the Fallout games, including DLCs and canceled titles, all of which are certified bug-free (if you want) and compatible with just about any platform, including your Pip-Boy, though the graphics might not be the greatest on something like that. You’ll also get a complete collection of all the other Fallout productions, like official merchandise, art-work, and so on.
Finally, since this is modded Fallout, you’ll find a connection in your Warehouse to… ah, let’s call it a cosmic mod database, containing just about any mod imaginable for the Fallout series and a user-friendly interface that ensures you’ll find what you want with a minimum of fuss and effort. Enjoy, and remember: War Never Changes!
RobCo Pip-Boy (merged with Tablet of the Free) (Free)
The latest in handheld computing systems, coming in a wide variety of designs and configurations. Whether you prefer the tablet-styled Pip-Boy 2000 with its various upgrade ports, or you’d rather have a wrist computer such as the Pip-Boy 3000, this compact and potent computer will serve you well during your time here. Carrying a built-in Geiger Counter, medical analysis suite, mapping and database functionality, input/output ports compatible with a wide range of other hardware, and more besides, this device is one of the most versatile personal assistants on the market today. Not that that’s saying much, given that the market is a ruined hellhole, but you get the idea.
Bobbleheads (Free)
One of the most popular icons to come out of the Pre-War world, the Vault Boy (and Vault Girl) were immortalized in everything from posters to software to these: genuine Vault-Tec Bobbleheads. You get a full collection of every bobblehead made for the series, the perfect memento to remember your time in Fallout by. These Bobbleheads are only decorations, providing no boosts to any 'base stats' like they did in, for example, Fallout 3.
Augmented Scanner (Free)
Part of a next-generation analysis suite, this scanning and tracking system allows for fast and easy analysis of the user’s environment. Fine-tuned for materials and elemental analysis, this upgrade excels at tracking down items that are of particular interest to the user, as defined by various priority or exclusion lists (which may be altered by the user whenever desired). For example, if you need more crystal or fiber optics to complete some modifications to your Laser Rifle, the system will highlight containers or items that might contain such components. Likewise, you could have the program point out specific weapon types, medication or chems, and just about any other such item of interest. It can even track exploration, allowing you to configure the system to only highlight boxes, chests or even corpses that you have not yet searched.
Somewhat uncommon in the wasteland, scanners of this type are most often found installed into the RobCo Pip-Boy, though this variant is compatible with most other systems as well.
Full Storage [200/550 CP]
This old, half-broken Pip-Boy seems to be incapable of even starting its operating system, the diagnostics indicating that the entirety of its vast 64k RAM is already in use. Most people might simply discard it or strip it for spare parts, but a closer look will reveal the exact reason for its fault: its internal database has been crammed full of Fallout design specs, schematics, scientific principles and so on. How full, you ask? Well, it’s got just about every semi-common piece of Fallout tech in there somewhere, from Laser Rifle schematics to Assaultron software and Berry Mentat formulations to Power Armor designs. Though mainly limited to the kind of technologies one could have found in the Pre-War world of old, a number of designs that were only finalized in the two centuries following the apocalypse can also be found here (such as the Hydra drug, the Enclave’s X-01 and Hellfire armor designs, and the Radium Rifle). Though you’ll still need a way to actually build all of these things, this database is nonetheless one of the most spectacular treasures scavvers could find.
Heavy Vertibird [250/300 CP]
Few factions in the wasteland have access to flight - most technologies required to build or even maintain aircraft were lost during the nuclear apocalypse. But that doesn’t mean such things are gone entirely, and you seem to have acquired a working aircraft of some kind, in pristine condition.
For 200CP, you will acquire a Vertibird (a twin rotor VTOL craft) similar to the ones used by the Brotherhood Of Steel circa 2287. It comes with a nose-mounted pair of heavy machine guns, a minigun linked to the side door for passengers to use, and armor plating that gives it moderate protection against most types of weaponry.
For an additional 50C (250CP total), you may upgrade your Vertibird to the heavier design used by the Enclave in 2277, which sported heavier weapons (a nose-mounted Gatling Laser, missile packs under the wings and a small bomb bay for Mini-Nukes) and substantially stronger armor.
All variants of this purchase come with unlimited fuel and a replenishing stockpile of ammunition in your Warehouse or another, suitable location of your choosing. Settlement [100/200 CP]
Upgrades: Mobile, Flight, Orbital [200/0 CP]
Upgrade: Protected x2 [200/-200 CP]
Mothership Zeta (Free)
Settlement (50-100 people, self sufficient) Protected x2 (nuke-blocking shields) Integration + Teleporter (orbital teleportation capabilities) Firepower + Armageddon x3 (nuclear yield orbital Death Ray with reload time of <1min) Support + Garage (hangars for Recon Craft, manufacturing capabilities and infrastructure) Paradise Mobile + Flight + Orbital (spaceflight with presumed FTL) SCIENCE! + Cutting Edge x3 (Alien technologies)
Cutting Edge upgrades:
Major Mods [200/-400 CP]
At this level of modding, you’re starting to see some serious impact on the overall way you’re interacting with the setting. Mods here would include weapons or powers that are substantially better than those found in the Fallout setting, such as Power Armor with built-in shields, granting you double the number of normal in-game ‘perks’ as a learning booster of sorts, and other such effects that noticeably increase your power. This also includes mods that could have a far-reaching impact on the setting but don’t immediately do so unless you use them in such a manner - an Auto-Doc that can install the majority of cybernetics seen in the series with no requirements other than the necessary supplies, for example. Mods like this will be immediately obvious to anyone comparing your time here to a hypothetical ‘unmodded’ situation.

Companion Imports

Friends and Companions [200/-600 CP]
Though you might follow in the footsteps of the Lone Wanderer, sometimes the company is what makes the journey worthwhile. You may import an existing Companion or create a new one of your own design for 50CP each, or pay 200CP for eight Companions at once. Each receives a background and 600CP to spend on whatever purchases they prefer. You may also use this option to recruit new Companions while in the setting - this can be applied alongside and combined with similar recruiting options in the ‘main’ jump if using Modded Fallout in the Supplement Mode. For example, if you import or recruit a Companion in the ‘main’ Fallout jump, you can do the same for that person here. Doing so still costs the normal amount of CP. Companions recruited from this setting receive their background and CP at the end of their time here. Imported Companions

Drawbacks

Long Forgotten [600/0 CP]
A creature, buried beneath Appalachia. A building in the wastes outside D.C. A blackened book underneath the swamps of Point Lookout. A deep, winding mine North of Boston, stained with the blood spilled in their name by the wicked blade of the old, old world.
Places. Names. Dangers that have nothing to do with laser beams, rocket launchers or machine guns. Reality has never been kind to mortals, but most of the time, the rends in the sanity of the world were always… well-hidden. Out of the way. Unlikely to be found by many, or survived by the few who did encounter them. But no more.
The world changes, now, occult rituals performed in the dark places of the world, hallucinations and madness becoming commonplace. Whispers abound of eldritch beings, things wrong in ways even the twisted animals of the Post-War world never were, spotted in the wastes far from civilization. Radiation was always there, always a risk to health and wellbeing - but never like this, never so… corrupting. Mutations become a sign of something darker, Ghouls and madmen the first heralds of the eldritch terrors yet to come.
You’re in a horror world now, Jumper, where nightmares are no longer merely constrained to the realm of dreams. They are coming… or, rather, they never left.

2024.06.02 08:45 CentennialElections 2024 Presidential Prediction (6/1/2024)

 2024 Presidential Prediction (6/1/2024)
Presidential (Margins: 1/5/15)
Even though Trump got convicted a few days ago, my prediction for the presidential race from last month really hasn't changed yet. After the sentencing, if Trump's support starts to drop dramatically, then I would likely make changes in my August to early November predictions to reflect that. For now, I still think Biden has an underrated chance of winning, but it's still looking to be very close, closer than 2020. Unlike last month, however, I'd like to go into detail about why I have these placements.
Likely Republican States:
  • Missouri: Even though this was a Safe Republican state in 2016 and 2020, it only barely went over 15% for Trump. In 2020, it even trended left relative to the nation (18.51% to 15.39%, 20.6% to 19.84%). More importantly, much like in Kansas, the percentage of vote the GOP gets in the rurals have largely been in the 70s-80s, while the suburbs are competitive and within reach for Democrats. With that in mind, I could see Missouri dipping just below 15% in 2024. I've seen the same argument made for Indiana too, though I'm a little more hesitant with that (for now) since it was a point or two redder than Missouri.
    • Predicted Margin: R+14-14.5
  • South Carolina: Should be self-explanatory. For the last several elections, South Carolina has been in the Likely Republican range. When adjusting for national environment, SC has remained rather stagnant, hovering around 14-16% of the national environment. Right now, there's nothing to indicate that will change much at all.
    • Predicted Margin: R+12-12.5
  • Kansas: As I mentioned with Missouri, Kansas' rurals are starting to max out, while the suburban areas are becoming better for Democrats. It's happening a lot faster for Kansas than for Missouri though. In particular, the state's 5 most populated counties, Johnson, Sedgwick, Shawnee, Wyandotte, and Douglas have all been moving to the left It's been trending to the left relative to the nation since 2012 (21.61%, 20.42%, 14.65%; when adjusting for NPV - 25.47%, 22.51%, 19.10%). As such, I expect Kansas to be more competitive in 2024, though not below 10%.
    • Predicted Margin: R+11.5-12
  • Nebraska's 1st Congressional District: Similarly to Kansas, Nebraska's 1st has been seeing some strong trends to the left (alongside the 2nd District). While it has been redder than Kansas so far, the recent redistricting has flipped their positions, with NE-01 being bluer now (taking away from NE-02).
    • Predicted Margin: R+10.5-11
  • Iowa: Iowa has been fairly red from 2016 onwards, and unlike in Ohio, Democrats have only one statewide office - Auditor. No senators, no members of Congress... almost nothing. It did go from R+9.41 to R+8.2 in 2020, but relative to the nation, it actually trended right (11.50% to 12.65%). I don't really see how this state could move left without Biden outperforming nationwide.
    • Predicted Margin: R+9-10
  • Alaska: Alaska has s remained fairly Republican since 1968 (when Nixon narrowly won it), though it's been trending left for quite a while. In 2008, it voted for McCain by 21.53% (28.81% when adjusted for NPV), but in 2020, Trump only won it by 10.06% (14.51% when adjusted). Certain areas, like Anchorage, are getting a lot bluer. Additionally, Mary Peltola recently won the house race in 2022. That said, Anchorage is losing population despite its blue shift, and the WWC Mat-Su valley is growing in population. I still think it could shift left somewhat, but it will still be Likely Republican.
    • Predicted Margin: R+8.5-9.5
  • Ohio: Similar to Iowa, Ohio has been competitive for a while until 2016, and since then it's been fairly red. In both 2016 and 2020, it voted for Trump by about 8%, even trending to the right of the nation (10.16% vs 12.48%). Unlike in Iowa, though, Ohio Dems hold one statewide office - Senator Sherrod Brown. Additionally, while the rurals have gotten much redder, the suburbs are shifting blue, which could offset some of the Republican trends going on in the state. I don't see it moving much either way right now.
    • Predicted Margin: R+8-9
  • Florida: As with Ohio, Florida used to be a key battleground state, though the transition into a more Republican state was more gradual. Even before the 2022 midterms blowout, Florida seemed to be moving to the right. Although Biden did better nationwide than Clinton, he performed worse in Florida (1.20% vs 3.36%; adjusted - 3.29% vs 7.81%). Since then, Democrats have had only minor victories in Florida, and the registration numbers for Republicans have been going through the roof. While I think the rightward trends in Florida are sometimes exaggerated, they are real, and I don't see Biden doing well there.
    • Predicted Margin: R+7.5-8
  • Maine's 2nd Congressional District: Once a decently Democratic district, ME-02 has become far more Republican since 2016. It moved a bit to the left in 2020 (10.29% to 7.44%; when adjusted for NPV - 12.38% to 11.89%), though I don't think it will move that far to the left. It's kind of hard to tell where it will go since its such a small district, though it should remain Likely Republican.
    • Predicted Margin: R+7-8
Likely Democrat States:
  • Virginia: This state has been moving to the left since 2008, especially between 2016 and 2020 (5.32% to 10.11%, 3.23% to 5.66% to the left of the nation) due to growth in the suburbs and opposition to Trump. Yes, Youngkin did win the governor's race, and many polls have Virginia looking competitive, but I don't buy that Trump will do much better here than in 2020. He may gain a bit, but northern Virginia should still remain fairly opposed to Trump.
    • Predicted Margin: D+9.5-10.5
  • New Mexico: After 2008, New Mexico has remained around 6-7% to the left of the national environment, being a Likely Blue state. Since 2020, many areas have seen a shift to the right among Hispanic voters, especially in Florida. While Hispanic voters aren't a monolith, Trump does seem to be making gains with this group across the board. As NM has a lot of Hispanic voters, this could lead to Trump making some gains in the state, though not enough to make it very competitive.
    • Predicted Margin: D+9.5-10
  • New Hampshire: Historically, New Hampshire has been rather elastic, and its voting patterns suggest a tendency to go against incumbents. But in 2020, things changed - NH went from D+0.37 to D+7.35 (1.72% to the right of the nation to 2.90% to the right of the nation). Furthermore, New Hampshire has a lot that makes it a bright spot for Biden (linked because that comment explained it better than I could, and I don't want to make this explanation too long). For those reasons, I expect Biden to improve on his performance in New Hampshire by quite a bit.
    • Predicted Margin: D+9-9.5
  • Maine: Like New Hampshire, although to a lesser extent, Maine became more competitive in 2016 (going to Clinton by 2.96%, 0.87% to the left of the nation). In 2020, though, Biden won Maine at large by 9.07% (and 4.62% to the left of the national environment). Unlike New Hampshire, I don't imagine this state moving to the left in 2024. It's a fairly rural state, and it isn't quite as socially liberal. I imagine it will move a bit to the right due to the growing urban/rural divide, though nowhere near enough for it to be Lean D.
    • Predicted Margin: D+8-8.5
  • Nebraska's 2nd Congressional District: As a very suburban district, Nebraska's 2nd District has been trending to the left fairly quickly since 2012 - R+7.15, R+2.24, and D+6.64 (national environment comparison - R+11.01, R+4.33, D+2.19). While redistricting has made NE-02 less blue (and made NE-01 bluer), the suburban district is still trending to the left, and that should be enough to make up for the redistricting.
    • Predicted Margin: D+6.5-7.5
  • Minnesota: Although Minnesota moved to the left in 2020 after being very close, similar to Maine and New Hampshire, it appears to be more likely to move right compared to those two states. Minnesota is very open to third parties, and those third parties tend to take votes away from Democrats. Third parties get a lot of votes in New Hampshire and Maine too, but their demographics are more favorable to Democrats (especially New Hampshire), while Minnesota has a large WWC population that Trump could pull from. While I doubt it will be Lean Democratic, it should be closer than in 2020.
    • Predicted Margin: D+5.5-6.5
Lean Republican States:
  • Texas: Since 2012, Texas has been moving to the left due to population growth and blue trends in suburbs and urban areas, giving Democrats hope that the state may be flippable in the near future. In 2020, though, the Rio Grande Valley, a traditionally Democratic area, shifted very far to the right. Most of the region is low in population, with the exception of Hidalgo County, the 8th largest in the state. While Democrats have a fair amount of obstacles in the state of Texas, I do think Democrats are likely to make at least some gains here. The RGV, and other rural areas, while shifting to the right, are losing population, while many highly populated areas (not just the Bexar, Travis, and Dallas counties, but many surrounding ones such as Collin, Denton, and Tarrant too) are growing in population. While I think the rural trends will slow down the leftward trend of Texas, I don't think it will be enough to stop them fully, let alone reverse them. But they won't move the state very far left, which is why I put it at the higher end of Lean Republican.
    • Predicted Margin: R+4-4.5
  • North Carolina: From 2012 to 2020, North Carolina has remained between 5.7 and 5.9 percent to the right of the national environment. The leftward urban trends and rural rightward trends appear to be cancelling each other out. Biden is capable of winning NC, particularly if things improve for him in the future (ex: Trump actually gets jailed), but right now, I see him doing better than Clinton did in 2016, and a bit worse than he did in 2020.
    • Predicted Margin: R+1.5-2
Lean Democrat States:
  • Michigan: I really don't buy the argument that Michigan will be the second bluest or reddest out of the rust belt trio (MI, WI, and PA). Yes, Biden could struggle with getting turnout from Arab Americans and college voters because of Gaza and other issues, but these populations don't make up as much of the state as people think. Furthermore, the suburbs are growing in population and trending more to the left. If Trump continues to lose ground in Grand Rapids, Lansing, Grand Traverse, or suburban Detroit, lowered turnout in Arab-American and college areas won't be enough to offset that. I'm hesitant to say Michigan will be bluer than it was in 2020, but I don't think it will be much redder either, especially since it was the only one of the trio to move to the left relative to the national environment (R+0.22 to D+2.78; R+2.31 to R+1.67 when adjusted for NPV).
    • Predicted Margin: D+2-3
  • Arizona: Even before the court decision on abortion came out not too long about, I've become more skeptical about Trump's chances to win Arizona. It's a state that has rejected Trump and his brand of Republicanism over the last several years - Mark Kelly won both the 2020 special senate election and his 2022 race, and Katie Hobbs overperformed polling to defeat Kari Lake, albeit narrowly. Furthermore, Maricopa and Pima are two counties that are not only trending left fairly quickly, but make up a massive chunk of the state. Combined, they make up 5,649,033 people, compared to the state's total population of 7,431,344 (76.02%). Also, Trump insulting McCain frequently hasn't helped him with traditional Republicans in the state. Trump can win Arizona, but I see this state being his worst swing state by far, besides (maybe) Michigan. Santa Cruz and Yuma are two areas I can see shifting right, but that's nowhere near enough to counter the shifts in Maricopa and Pima.
    • Predicted Margin: D+1.5-2.5
Tilt Republican States:
  • Wisconsin: This one was really hard to decide for me. On one hand, Democrats outperformed polling expectations in the 2022 Senate and Gubernatorial races. Democrats have also been gaining in the WOW counties (Waukesha, Ozaukee, and Washington), and they've been able to win Wisconsin in 3/4 of the non-Obama elections in the 21st century (albeit by less than 1% every time). Plus, polling suggests that this state is one of Biden's better options. On the other hand, Wisconsin polling really overestimated Biden, putting it to the left of Pennsylvania, and even Michigan. Plus, Trump has a lot of room to grow in rural areas (and while it went from R+0.77 to D+0.63, when adjusted for NPV, it trended right; R+1.32 to R+3.82). I'm very unsure how this state will go, and I can see an argument for it being Tilt either way. For now, I'm keeping it at Tilt Republican, though that could easily change in the next few months. Either way, I'd say that this is Trump's easiest state to flip.
    • Predicted Margin: R+0-0.5
Tilt Democrat States:
  • Georgia: Similarly to Arizona, many traditional conservatives are turning away from Trump. While Brian Kemp was able to win by a good margin, he's a decently popular incumbent who ran against a candidate who wasn't that strong (Stacey Abrams), survived a blue wave in 2018, and isn't a Trumpian Republican. I do think Biden will have some issues with minority voters, though that won't be enough for Trump to make up for Biden's huge gains in the suburbs and urban areas. Georgia trended left in 2020 even faster than Arizona (R+5.13 to D+0.23; R+7.24 to R+4.22 with NPV adjustment). Trump can definitely win here, but I can't see this being Trump's easiest state to flip.
    • Predicted Margin: D+0.5-1.5
  • Pennsylvania: The opposite of Georgia, Pennsylvania is one swing state that I see as rather overrated for Biden. Given that he barely got it over 1%, and that it trended to the right of the nation (R+0.72 to D+1.17; R+1.37 to R+3.28 with adjustments), and Trump's base of support is generally stronger in the Rust Belt than in the Sun Belt (which is part of why I'm skeptical of current polling that says the opposite), I don't think Biden will improve here overall. That said, Biden does have room to grow in the suburbs in southeastern Pennsylvania, and I think that should be enough to help him narrowly win the state and counteract Trump's growth in rural areas.
    • Predicted Margin: D+0.5-1
  • Nevada: In 2016 and 2020, Clinton and Biden both won Nevada by around 2.4% (meaning it trended right relative to the nation - D+0.33 to R+2.06). This state is kind of hard for me to decide. While it has arguably been moving to the right, partially due to Clarke County, Nevada polls underestimated Democrats in the Senate race for 2022, and it is a rather pro-choice state. Even Joe Lombardo, the GOP governor, signed pro-choice legislation. Plus, Catherine Cortez Masto's opponent was Adam Laxalt, a Trumpian candidate who supported the election fraud claims. This could indicate that, like Arizona, Trump would be in trouble. However, Masto barely won the Senate election. While Biden could do better than anticipated, I see this race as being one of the closest for 2024, albeit narrowly favoring Biden at the moment.
    • Predicted Margin: D+0-1
The states I'm the most shaky on are Wisconsin and Nevada. While I have an opinion on which candidate they tilt towards, it was very hard to decide whether I should change them from my May prediction, especially with the recent conviction.
Should Trump receive jail time for this case, I imagine that my prediction could change substantially among the seven battlegrounds (Arizona, Georgia, Michigan, Nevada, North Carolina, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin). For now, though, this is what I expect - Biden improves over the next several months and outperforms polling expectations somewhat, having the same incumbency boost that Bush, Obama, and Trump all got (though to a lesser extent than those three, as Trump was the previous incumbent).
