2024.05.15 11:52 Fit-Assistance-5184 Ash Ketchum and Messi

If u dont know anything about football and Pokemon, i dont see why u should read more in this post...
I was watching Orange Islands and just opened old posts on reddit to see what ppl thought about it. And i saw a post where it said that PPL mostly dont consider the Orange League as a major trophy.
That's something that made me realise...
Ash ketchum is so similiar to the Footballer Lionel Messi.
Coincidence? I think not

Here are some snippets from our stories :
1. Unmasking the Deepfake Nightmare: When Tech Goes Too Far 💻
So, you know how sometimes technology can be super cool? Well, sometimes it’s not so cool. Take deepfake apps, for example. Teens are using these apps to make fake nude photos of their classmates and share them around. Not cool, right?📸
What’s the Deal? At high schools in places like Washington and New Jersey, guys are using these apps to take photos of girls and make them look naked. Then they share these fake photos with everyone. It’s causing a lot of trouble. 😱Why is it a Problem? Imagine someone using a fake photo of you without your permission. It's not just embarrassing; it’s a type of sexual abuse. That’s why people are trying to stop it. Laws have been passed in some places, and more are in the works.
But here’s the thing: some people think these laws aren’t enough. They say we need to crack down on the apps themselves. If we make it harder to use these apps, then there won’t be as many fake photos floating around. What Can We Do? So, how do we stop this? ...( read more on our student newsletter)

2. Rioting Farmers Derail Europe's Green Dream 🌍💥
Imagine this: Lyon, France, 2021. The mayor decides to take red meat off school menus, not just for fun, but because it's safer and saves time during a pandemic. But oh boy, did the farmers lose it! They rolled into the city with tractors and cows, yelling about ideology on kids' plates 😱.
But Lyon was just the beginning. All over Europe, farmers revved up their engines, protesting against new eco-friendly rules and demanding more subsidies 💰. From Paris to Brussels to the Netherlands, it was a tractor-tastic rebellion.Europe had big plans to fight climate change with a Green Deal 🌍. But farmers weren't having it! They wanted all the perks of government help without any strings attached. And guess what? They got their way!
You see, for years, the EU has been giving farmers tons of money 💸. But here's the twist: most of these farms aren't exactly eco-friendly 🌱. They guzzle water, spew greenhouse gases, and use a truckload of pesticides 🚱.
But despite their small economic footprint, farmers in Europe have a HUGE say in politics 🚜. They've been getting away with demanding subsidies and blocking eco-friendly rules for ages! So when the EU proposed new laws to clean up farming, like using less pesticides and raising animals more humanely, farmers went ballistic! 💥
And guess what? They won! Politicians caved...( read more on our student newsletter)

3. How AI is Cooking Up Food Innovation!
Hey foodies! Ever wondered how those tasty treats in your pantry get their delicious flavors? Well, buckle up because Unilever's spilling the beans on their secret ingredient: Artificial Intelligence!
Picture this: instead of chefs slaving away in the kitchen, Unilever's whipping up new recipes with the help of super-smart AI models. 👩‍🍳 These digital wizards predict how new products will taste, feel, and even behave on factory lines—all without breaking a sweat! 💡
But wait, there's more! Unilever's not just cooking up yummy snacks; they're also making them healthier, planet-friendly, and affordable! 🌍 With AI in their toolkit, they're cracking the code to create the perfect balance of taste and sustainability.
Take Knorr's Zero Salt Bouillon Cubes, for example. 🍲 By harnessing the power of AI, Unilever crafted a sodium-free sensation that's just as tasty as the original—no salt shaker required! 🧂 ...( read more on our student newsletter)

4. Crime and Perception: Are People Reacting to the Wrong Alarm?

Lawmakers have two main jobs: reducing crime and making people feel safe. But sometimes there's a big gap between what's happening with crime and how people feel about it.
For example, a Gallup poll showed that more Americans than ever—63 percent in 2023—think crime is a big problem, even though crime rates have actually been dropping. It's like thinking the house is on fire when it's just the toaster burning your toast.🍞 This gap between reality and what people think is a big deal. It affects what laws get made. Lawmakers don’t always look at what’s really happening; they also look at what people believe is happening.
So, when people feel scared about crime—maybe because of news reports about a rise in crime that isn't really there—lawmakers often feel pressured to act. This has led to some places passing tough laws that bring back the harsh punishments of the 1980s and '90s. They're trying to fix a problem that's already getting better... 2024.05.15 11:34 Cautious-General-199 How do I (33F) navigate through a situation where my (31M) does not meet my intimacy needs and gets distant and angry when I bring it up?

My partner and I have been together for over 2 years. We have lived together for 1 and recently moved to another new place. We have always had good chemistry, very similar goals , interests and dreams. Besides a couple of things we are a great match. One of the things that is a big problem for me is he is not affectionate, we have had a few fights and a few calm coherent conversations where I explained to him that cuddling, occasionally offering me a light massage or hugging is huge for me, it’s like foreplay for me emotionally and by touch. He himself has his own intimacy needs that he shared with me, they are all related to sex, and I have done each and everyone of those requests even though some of them to me were just meh.
Not only have I done them, I offered to do them at certain points of our relationship myself enthusiastically to make him happy. And he has told me how much he appreciated and loved it.
But after 2 years I am still waiting to wake up one morning to him cuddling me or randomly hugging me. He will occasionally give me a kiss or quickly touch me but that’s pretty much it outside the bedroom . Few months ago I had a huge meltdown over this and told him I can’t be like this anymore, that it’s something that I lack tremendously, that I want my partner to cuddle me without asking. He got angry and defensive and shut down for days, when he came to talk after 2 days I was so angry he responded this way to me when I was hurt and vulnerable I said I didn’t want to continue. But we talked for hours and made up and he promised he will make an effort. He did for first few weeks slightly better and I hoped that progress will evolve but it has reverted back to how it was. And now I feel insecure and generally bad about myself because I have talked with him several times about this, calmly and not calmly-crying and I can no longer think he doesn’t get it but chooses not to do it
Another thing to mention is that I do most of housework, and I constantly have to ask him to do things as well, he does some easy housework without me asking, but a lot of things like cleaning toilets, fridge, bathtubs, windows, bed/towel laundry is all me. He never does it unless I ask him and because when I ask him he will reply by signing and annoyingly saying OK, I have stopped, because it feels like I pestering him.
We split the cooking id say I do 70% of that but he is a great cook. And we split finances 50-50.
This weekend I kind of had a trifecta of all these issues and ended up breaking down in tears again. First I came on to him insinuation we get busy later and he joked it off which I didn’t take seriously at that moment but nothing happened for 2 days and at the end of second day I asked him if he can cuddle me in the morning, he said yes and I asked him to promise me which he did. When I woke up he heard I was awake but didn’t come , I came out of bedroom looking upset and he realized he forgot, and said oh no sorry I forgot let’s go, at first I said just forget it, but then later we went , he spooned me while browsing with his phone and I went seriously? I didn’t really want to continue because it felt like he was doing a chore I asked him to do interrupting his phone time. So I left.
Sidenote - A week before this I asked him to go grab a small coffee table we had in our car after the move , I kept asking him all week but he never did it , so this same day I asked him again: please go grab it tomorrow I have been asking you for a week I don’t want to drive with it in my car. He again sighed and said K.
So the next day comes and by 7 pm he still hasn’t brought it upstairs so I go take up myself . He asks you need help? At that point I’m boiling inside thinking “kinda late to ask that buddy” and say no, because well I already brought it. I went into bedroom and closed the door and suddenly it all hit me: ignoring my sexual advance , forgetting to cuddle with me again then bringing his phone for the ride, forgetting the coffee table I asked him to do at least five times , I couldn’t hold back tears and waterfalls started.i know he realized I was upset but didn’t approach me, when I came to sit on a couch he asked if I was ok. I gave myself 2-3 min to calm and said: no ok you win I’m done asking you for affection I’m so tired of asking you to do things you are supposed to do as an adult, Do wtv you want I feel drained.
He interrupted raising his voice saying I told you I forgot to cuddle ! I went and cuddled with you after. To which I said ya ok with your phone in hand browsing, thanks for that special moment. And then he said I did dishes the other day. To which I replied: you took 10 minutes to load dishwasher but I literally spent 4 hours cleaning unpacking our boxes and organizing things. He raised his voice again and I said : you ask me what’s wrong I tell you and you yell at me, anything else you want to add ? He shut down. I thought F this got dressed for a walk and before I left I calmly came up and said;when I tell you how I feel you yell at me then shutdown, so let me tell you this when you are done with your silent treatment after 2-3 days don’t come talk to me, not this time. As I walking away he said “I wasn’t yelling but ok”.
I have no idea where to go from here , part of me just wants to end it because I don’t think he will ever try to fulfill my needs. Part of me wants to be manipulative, but that wouldn’t work I think. And part of me wants to tell ya let’s continue as partners / roommates as we JUST signed new lease and neither can move but to sleep separately - no intimacy.
Has anyone faced similar issues? Any ideas how I can navigate though his response ? I feel so hurt that he again chose to raise his voice rather than comfort me or apologize. I will never feel comfortable again asking him for affection at this point it would be pathetic. Besides ending it is there anything I haven’t tried that I should?

2024.05.15 10:58 Odd-Bowl-5671 Are people from New Jersey severely mentally ill and weirdos or is it just me?

The most fake, shallowest and dumbest mother fuckers I ever seen. Holy shit I’d rather deal with the crazies in Los Angeles than these weirdos. Every single person I met at my job and outside in public are all nice and dandy in the beginning then the more they see me or come across me they get angry and passive aggressive towards me. Don’t get me started on the woman here. Bunch of racism here too.

2024.05.15 10:05 Low-Cycle5322 How to Choose Efficient and Affordable SEO Services

How to Choose Efficient and Affordable SEO Services
https://preview.redd.it/kg4igtcbsj0d1.png?width=800&format=png&auto=webp&s=4ac543907f0edd1b398a40f98f14760be7804fcd
Nowadays, it seems like more and more people are looking for inexpensive SEO solutions. Nearly all of these businesses, from small startups to large multinational enterprises, depend on SEO to develop and engage with customers online. It is undoubtedly true that large corporations are likely to invest a lot of money on their SEO techniques; after all, they are what drive visitors to their websites and uphold their positive online reputations.
And SEO for a massage parlor is also critical to make the website more appealing to search engine algorithms if you want it to get better. Of course, not every firm knows how to use SEO, and many small businesses believe they cannot afford to hire an expert. You can find SEO services that are both efficient and reasonably priced to receive the assistance you require.
Experienced Companies with Plans
When searching for reasonably-priced digital marketing for a massage parlor, including SEO services, you should look for seasoned businesses with a proven track record and good standing in the market. You’ll discover that several organizations with expertise and track records provide business clients with very cost-effective plans. The majority of services will offer a variety of plans at prices that will accommodate almost any marketing budget. Spend some time researching companies, comparing price ranges, and then talking with them about your needs and spending plan to see which option works best.
Up-to-Date Services
There are many different companies and agencies out there that will advertise loudly that they provide the lowest prices and services in the industry right now. Many firms that feel they can’t afford SEO in the first place are immediately drawn to this offer. The issue is that many businesses that offer you inexpensive services will first give you subpar services. Effective marketing ideas for massage therapists include SEO techniques that do away with unproductive techniques for your company or those that are out of date. You should establish a distinction between paying the cheapest possible price for subpar labor and paying a reasonable fee for effective, high-quality services.
Go by Word of Mouth Instead of a Google Search
Why not base your choice on how well a search engine optimization company performs? For their clients to waste time on their own websites, the top search engine optimization specialists are too busy enhancing websites.
The top businesses often have a large number of loyal clients who have recommended the same service to other people that are among the best digital marketing ideas that will give your parlor a boost. For example, only businesses in need of new customers will attempt to rank for best SEO company in a particular place. This also holds true for other keywords, like “best SEO tools” and “best SEO services.”
Checkout Their Backlinks
Recall that backlinks are essential to the SEO process. These are the links to your websites that are published on different outside websites. The backlinks must be of a high caliber. One must comprehend the website’s reputation in order to assess the quality of these services. You need to provide quality content for your website in order to obtain backlinks. This group of backlinks tends to increase website traffic and its ranking. When picking an SEO firm, there are a number of factors that must be taken into account, and one of those factors is backlinks.
Do They Provide Daily Reports?
Reputable SEO companies provide monthly work updates and progress reports to the companies that have given them projects. This one is a significant aspect of digital marketing services for spa and massage. You may monitor how the SEO company is assisting in the expansion of your website or business through daily or monthly reports. You tend to receive a higher quantity of benefits when you are completely knowledgeable of how the business operates. Making SEO reports can be done in a number of ways. You must be aware of the project’s name, URL, and launch date. Always research the keyword rankings of both you and your rivals. You must review reports on website traffic and backlinks.
Take into account other factors also. You must find out from the SEO company what format they adhere to while creating reports. Inform the SEO company if there is anything in particular you would want to see in the report.
Do They Have a Designed Strategy?
A good strategy will enable you to carry out the entire process more effectively. Additionally, clients would be attentive and knowledgeable about the working process as a whole. The goals and aims of your business must be very clear. The web developer would benefit from having both short- and long-term goals. Professional SEO services would incorporate a quantitative analysis and clarity-maintaining strategy. For a company’s digital expansion, a predetermined percentage range might be established.
Do They Offer Social Media Marketing?
Online marketing includes autonomous social media techniques. But they are increasingly important components of SEO. There are certain websites that offer a significant platform for the exchange of goods, services, and information. Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, and YouTube are the most popular ones. These are the best methods for promoting a business.
On the contrary, they frequently serve as the SEO equivalent of your website’s shadow. Google and the majority of other search engines often favor social networking websites. Your websites may occasionally not appear in the top spots. Your social network profile could still succeed in attaining the top slot, though. In such a situation, a lot of people visit your website through your social media profile.
The Takeaway
Affordable SEO services are not just a pipe dream; they are a reality that can offer compelling and expert solutions for your online business requirements. A beginner’s guide to online marketing for a massage parlor includes choosing the right SEO company that can provide the best SEO strategies. This is ideal for what your company needs to do in order to stand out in the online world.
Choose firms with extensive experience in search engine optimization and online reputation management when looking for affordable SEO services. An experienced business will be able to offer solutions in the areas of social media marketing optimization and marketing, website development and maintenance, as well as content creation. Additionally, it’s a smart idea to search for recognized businesses that might include case studies in their previous assignments.

Hi all, I'm currently licensed as an RN in PA and am wondering if anyone knows where to start to get licensed in New Jersey? I've tried reading online, but I find it confusing. Also, when licensed in Jersey and PA, I know I'll pay double renewal fees, but do I also need double CE credits? Thank you

2024.05.15 09:09 LucarioOfLegends [100 Girlfriends] No, body swapping is not an excuse to bypass consent.

100 Girlfriends is a series that I think is pretty neat, considering its been my hyperfixation for the past couple of years. It's very much a solid riff at the genre of harem romcoms and takes at lot of time to actually break down each member of its cast and really ask how their character quirks really affect them, eventually transforming into world's weirdest group dynamic, where more attention is given towards how each girl interacts with each other as the cast expands ever further. Though that doesn't stop the showcases of sheer love and dedication that Rentarou is willing to convey every time he gets the spotlight. Also its funny as hell.
Hardly means its perfect though, as people have pointed out the many flaws of the story, including its pacing, the questionable nature of its relationships due to the age gaps and familial relations, as well as a general dislike of the whole 100 soulmates plot device. I'd love to discuss and refute these point in a later post (particularly the last one boy do I have counterarguments to certain objections) but this prelude is long enough as is, so let's get talking about the main subject of this rant: Chapter 119 aka Fondle Festival 2.
Momiji Momi is the 15th girlfriend introduced, and she has a naturally contentious main quirk. She is a training masseuse with a fascination for soft things, a fascination that spreads specifically to the body parts of others. This results in a penchant towards groping both the girls and Rentarou alike, usually with no direct ask to do so from Momiji.
This is a questionable trait and runs the natural risk of turning her into a Mineta, but a few different factors keep it decently justifiable. The main point here is she is constantly giving out massages to Rentarou's Family and others, usually before any sort of inappropriate gropage. Hell, her first interaction was Rentarou finding her after massaging the school's entire tennis team, who had literally collapsed from the sheer pleasure and relief of the massage, and in her introduction to the group proper she straight up offers to massage the rest of the cast first and foremost, and only after is the cast willing to offer up their bodies for feeling up. It takes on a sort of transactional exchange, the cast gets free massages from Momiji, and Momiji gets to indulge in her urge to touch where she wants (sans probably the d and the v). And the entire cast seems pretty fine with it, not really reacting after a while most of the time.
Momiji also isn't just focused on the fanservice bits; her penchant for soft things stretches to bouncy house, hot buns, bread dough, and Nami boob mouse pads. Even just looking at the human body she is interested is far from boobs and butts, going to cheeks, stomachs, hands, arms, and backs. While she still is there to highlight the goods when the time comes, Momiji comes off much more than a character exclusively meant to justify fanservice, even if she is debatably the simplest and flattest girl of the main cast so far.
Enter Fondle Festival 2, generally considered one of the series few actual misses chapter wise alongside the obnoxious introductory chapters of Chiyo as well as Beef Tongue, which I could write an entire other rant about so help me god. But Fondle Festival 2 has its status for a reason, as it very much murks up the ideas of consent.
To keep things brief, Momiji ends up swapping bodies with Rentarou through the powers of a convenient drug brewed up by resident ridiculous scenario causer Kusuri, and immediately goes to grope the boobs of every single girl on the rooftop with her new boy hands without the girls realizing its Momiji for a significant amount of time and absolutely without them giving a clear thumbs up.
Consent is a bit of a grey area in 100 Girlfriends more generally, mainly because as a gag series it does have a status quo that it needs to maintain for its cast. Usually most characters are pretty good about their ridiculous demands in terms of directly asking about it, but no matter how many times the characters say no or tell them to stop, such questions and actions will of course continue in the next chapter simply due to wanting to be able to pull out those traits for jokes again. Momiji herself is a perpetrator considering how often her groping is considered a gag in a panel even if it is making the characters uncomfortable, though she is far from the worst offender (looking at you Hahari). For the most part characters are willing to call out stuff that is actively bad and say in pretty uncertain terms that its terrible, but this stuff still does happen due to the nature of the genre and how characters are defined.
In the context of Fondle Festival 2, the girls in question are...mostly okay with it? They acknowledge that this is a weird situation and bunch actually take advantage of said situation to fulfill their less than kosher desires, and by the end its revealed that basically all of them caught onto what had happened and were totally taking advantage of it.
The problems start with only most of the girlfriends being okay with it. Uto completely breaks her chuuni bard persona and is left frozen in shock at such an event, unclear if she was okay with it. Several girls try to get Momiji to stop and get an unwanted grope because of it, and Mimimi straight up slaps Momiji (who Mimimi assumed was Rentarou) and insinuates for them to stop, but Momiji continues undetered. Multiple girls very clearly and explicitly give a sign that they are not okay with this and they need to stop, yet Momiji continues to make them feel uncomfortable.
My largest problem, however, is when you realize that Momiji is using Rentarou's body for this. Rentarou is a bastion of chastity in essentially every regard, going to frankly ridiculous length to prevent any sexual advances from the girls or himself. He straight up does not allow himself to think of the girls in a sexual if he can allow it, as he sees it as demeaning of the girls themselves and that would be a failure on his part. Is it a kind of ridiculous belief? Yes. Is it still his own belief that he holds up to the best of his ability? Also yes, and that needs to be respected.
Fondle Festival 2, in my humble opinion, does not respect that belief in a really frustrating way. I can't say for certain what good body swapping etiquette is, but I don't imagine that going off in someone else body and doing something that stands directly against their characterization, especially since Rentarou was knocked out for most of this, and Momiji even ends up groping Rentarou/her own chest, which makes this even murkier.
Momiji does end up getting some level of comeuppance by the end of the chapter through a taste of her own medicine and she fully apologizes to the girls about the whole incident in the bonus page of the chapter, but I'd argue the damage has been done and it doesn't stop the gross feeling I got when reading the chapter, either the original japanese raws or the translated version.
While I can shrug off a lot about this series, this flagrant ignoring of both the girls and Rentarou in this situation for the sake of a bit did not jive with me. Consent is important y'all.

What is the Whig party? The Whig Party was a political party in the United States that existed from the early 1830s to the mid-1850s.
Here are some key points about the Whig Party: Origins: The Whig Party emerged in the 1830s as a coalition of various anti-Jacksonian factions. They opposed the policies of Democratic President Andrew Jackson, particularly his expansion of executive power and his handling of the Bank of the United States. Beliefs: The Whigs supported a strong federal government, internal improvements such as infrastructure projects, a national banking system, and protective tariffs to promote industry. Leadership: Prominent Whig leaders included Henry Clay, Daniel Webster, and William Henry Harrison. Presidential Success: Four Whig presidents served in office: William Henry Harrison, John Tyler, Zachary Taylor, and Millard Fillmore. Decline: The party began to splinter over issues such as slavery, the Mexican-American War, and the Compromise of 1850. The rise of the anti-slavery Republican Party and internal divisions led to the decline of the Whig Party. Legacy: While the Whig Party itself dissolved in the 1850s, many former Whigs joined the Republican Party or other political movements. The Whigs left a legacy of advocating for economic development and opposition to executive overreach.
Explain the Democratic-Republican Party The Democratic-Republican Party was one of the first political parties in the United States. Here are some key points about the Democratic-Republican Party: Founding: The party was founded by Thomas Jefferson and James Madison in the early 1790s in opposition to the Federalist Party led by Alexander Hamilton. Beliefs: The Democratic-Republicans favored a limited federal government, states' rights, agrarian interests, and a strict interpretation of the Constitution. They were critical of a strong central government and favored an agrarian society of small farmers. Leadership: Thomas Jefferson and James Madison were key figures in the party. Jefferson served as the third President of the United States from 1801 to 1809, and Madison succeeded him as the fourth President from 1809 to 1817. Opposition: The Democratic-Republicans opposed the Federalist Party's policies, including the Alien and Sedition Acts and a national bank. They supported the principles of the French Revolution and favored closer ties with France rather than Britain. Achievements: The Democratic-Republicans were responsible for the Louisiana Purchase in 1803, which doubled the size of the United States. They also oversaw the abolition of the national debt during Jefferson's presidency. Transformation: Over time, the Democratic-Republican Party split into factions, with some members eventually forming the Democratic Party, while others joined the Whig Party. The Democratic Party that emerged retained some of the principles of the Democratic-Republican Party. The Democratic-Republican Party played a significant role in shaping early American politics and government, advocating for a decentralized system and agrarian interests.
Explain the federalist party The Federalist Party was one of the first political parties in the United States. Here are some key points about the Federalist Party: Founding: The Federalist Party was founded in the 1790s by Alexander Hamilton, John Adams, and others who supported a strong central government and a loose interpretation of the Constitution. Beliefs: The Federalists believed in a strong federal government, a national bank, protective tariffs, and close ties with Britain. They favored an industrial and commercial economy over an agrarian one. Leadership: Alexander Hamilton was a key leader of the Federalist Party, along with John Adams, who became the second President of the United States from 1797 to 1801. Policies: The Federalists supported the Alien and Sedition Acts, which restricted immigration and free speech, and they favored a pro-British foreign policy. They were often at odds with the Democratic-Republicans led by Thomas Jefferson. Opposition: The Democratic-Republican Party emerged as the main opposition to the Federalists, criticizing their policies as favoring the wealthy and infringing on states' rights. Decline: The Federalist Party declined after the War of 1812, as their opposition to the war hurt their popularity. The party eventually dissolved in the 1820s, leaving the Democratic-Republicans as the dominant political force. The Federalist Party played a significant role in shaping early American politics, advocating for a strong central government and policies that favored commerce and industry.

I am planning on buying a 2015 Q50s 50k miles for 17.2k from a private seller in Jersey. I am from NY and I’m not sure how it would work buying the car if the owner still has to pay the car off? I’m thinking of going to my bank and ask about it and see what procedures I should go with but I wanna come to you guys first about it. How would I go on to do this with a private sell? Write a check to the private sellers bank? Let my bank do the work? Also once I have done the payment when and how would I be receiving the title? Would I be able to receive the title online or am I gonna have to wait for a physical copy of the title from Jersey so I can register the vehicle as a NY vehicle. Sorry for amount of questions, i’m new to this.

2024.05.15 07:38 UhWhateverworks MIL is nuttier than a fruitcake

My husband and I have been married for nearly 8 years and are parents of soon to be 3 young children (I’m due with our last kiddo next month). We are in our early 30s but have known each other since our early teens. We both have established, full time careers, are well educated, etc. We are in many ways what I would say is the suburban modern family. Life is hectic but we also have been very fortunate due to a combination of luck and consistent hard work and good decision making.
My husband’s family is quite the opposite. His dad has worked construction/carpentry since his early teens and been the breadwinner of the family, but has, for the most part, struggled to make ends meet. He is all in all a very charming, kindhearted guy though, and despite our vastly different lifestyles, I genuinely like him.
My MIL…she’s something else. While we have a mostly cordial relationship, she is truly one of the most self-absorbed people I’ve ever met. And not in a malicious manner— she just genuinely is narcissistic and thinks she knows best. Mostly this an annoying nuisance to occasionally deal with. She has said and done some unsavory things in the past that have resulted in short NC periods.
But this mentality ramped up to an 11 on a scale of 1-10 back in late February/early March.
My husband and I were going through an extremely stressful period in our marriage due to a number of issues. I was— and still am— pregnant with our third, we have a 5 and 2 year old, we were both working full time, and my husband’s job kept requiring him to travel out of state for a couple weeks at a time. Running a household as essentially a single mother while working full time was very stressful in itself, but then my grandmother had a stroke while he was out of state. By the time he got back, it was clear she wasn’t going to recover. She died with 48 hours of his return— which had given me just enough time to travel to visit her.
Almost simultaneously, my MIL was diagnosed with CLL. MIL has dealt with recurrent minor illnesses for some time (sinus and ear infections, the flu, etc.), so the cancer diagnosis wasn’t particularly surprising to me. But as most would do, we all spent some time reading up on this particular form of cancer, the general prognosis and treatment, etc.
My own parents happen to have both had cancer. My dad is a stage 2 prostate cancer survivor, having undergone treatment about 15 years ago. My mom unfortunately was not so lucky with her diagnosis— anaplastic carcinoma of the thyroid— and from diagnosis to death was less than ten months. It’s been about a decade now. Needless to say, I feel I am fairly well versed in the oncology world for an average person and able to provide some insight on the experience.
CLL, as I understand, and from what I’ve now heard from her original oncologist, is generally not a very aggressive cancer. I have heard some people refer to it as more like autoimmune disorder. It often requires little treatment and more “watchful waiting” of symptoms. My MIL was told by the oncologist that this is exactly what their plan was, that her cancer was not aggressive or requiring treatment, and that she could essentially live a normal life with occasional blood draws for monitoring purposes.
From the moment she was diagnosed though, it has been all about her. Her cancer diagnosis overshadowed my grandma’s actual death. My husband had to be gone for a day and a half to attend her first appointment, even if I was balancing life as a single working mom who was grieving at the moment. Before her first consultation, everyone was sure she was dying, even though it didn’t take an expert to look over her bloodwork and realize that she was likely in a very low stage of this non-aggressive cancer.
When she attended her consultation, her, FIL, SIL, and my husband had to go to support and were relieved to hear the good news. MIL was mortally offended that the oncologist poo-pooed her ridiculous made up, self-enforced diet that had already caused her to lose 10lbs. She’s not a big boned lady, so that was not weight she needed or should be losing. MIL is convinced that homeopathic and naturopathic remedies are the way to go, that “big pharma” is out to get us and make a buck off of our treatment, etc. She quite literally took ivermectin for covid previously, folks. So the fact that an oncologist would tell her that her diet was downright silly pissed her off and she quickly tried to find others more aligned with her viewpoints.
Life resumed more normally for a couple of weeks, but her random “cures” added to her diet and lifestyle have gotten increasingly bizarre and frankly inconvenient for her entire family.
This past weekend, we visited them, and MIL was insistent that she was dying and the next oncologist would recommend chemo for treatment. I fail to see why one oncologist would be so nonchalant about treatment and another would propose aggressive treatment, but I digress. She brought up Dr. Oz, a holistic massage therapist that uses oils and massage to cure cancer, and worst of all, a new item she’s added to her diet— roasted apricot pits. Now if you’re like me, you might be wondering what would possess someone to eat an apricot pit— after all, don’t they have cyanide in them? Precisely. My MIL is intentionally ingesting apricot pits because “cyanide kills cancer.”
As my husband eloquently put it, “No, cyanide kills *everything.”
Today my husband received a phone call asking if he’d be willing to petsit for them this weekend. We have a follow up ultrasound for a small abnormality detected in our baby on Friday, but MIL wants him to drive to their home two hours away and spend the night so he can watch their cat and SIL’s dog. Meanwhile MIL, FIL, and SIL will drive eight hours (and eight hours back) to visit this massage therapist/oil salesman to “cure her cancer.” Mind you, they are using SIL’s car because they have no other vehicle that works well enough to drive that far, they are constantly tight on money, and again, her oncologist has stated she does not need treatment.
I am at a loss. My husband, FIL, and SIL are all frustrated and have come around to the idea that maybe she is being a little over the top finally, but no one is putting their foot down to stop her. SIL is going to drive them instead of just saying no and not letting them take her car. FIL repeatedly drives to the store to pick up whatever weird ass product she wants to try next. And my husband despite having way too much to deal with at home, keeps dropping everything to tend to her.
It is mind boggling obnoxious and honestly in some ways offensive given my family history with cancer. My mom’s diagnosis was death sentence from the get go and she faced it with bravery and tenacity and selflessness. My MIL has a minor health scare and everyone is expected to drop everything to help her.
I am glad my husband is finally seeing reason and logic— but what now? I have told him I strongly believe he needs to speak up and encourage her to follow legitimate medical advice— both for her own good but also to bring himself peace of mind in the long run— but it’s like this woman WANTS to die.
I could go on for hours, but really I’m just wondering how the heck to toe this delicate line of supporting my spouse while prioritizing my family.
