2024.05.15 09:19 thisvideoiswrong Quick Looks 3: Vo'Quv Carrier

By my count, there are 15 T5 ships available for just dilithium or a level 40 token, which someone might want a starter build for to help them finish off the episode missions and start the reputation grind. My Strict Budget Build covers the three science vessels, the Baby Step series covers the three cruisers with tactical ensigns, Quick Looks 1 and 2 cover the Hegh'ta Bird of Prey and the Jem'hadar Escort, and there's definitely an argument to be made that some are just bad choices. But there was one more I wanted to take a look at here. This series will not be as thoroughly researched as those previous series, and it will not feature optimized skill builds (there are many resources for that), but the builds will be proven in the Badlands Battlezone and in solo Defense of Starbase One Advanced, as well as extensively parsed in the Wanted (Argala System) patrol with comparisons to similar builds. That should adequately demonstrate that they can get you whatever reputation marks you need, using only mission, basic (generally Mk XII uncommon) Exchange, and Phoenix Store items. Each build will be allowed one Mk XV item to maintain parity with the Strict Budget Build, usually a forward weapon. It's also easy enough to put these together that I could be persuaded to do more if there's a ship that deserves it.
So, why the Vo'Quv? Well it's in the name, it's a carrier. Hangar bays are expensive to boost in this game, but that means they have to be balanced to have pretty good base damage. In this case the two hangars did more than half the damage of most of the other builds in this series with hardly any support for them. The downside to carriers is that they often sacrifice a lot for those hangars. Not so for Flight Deck Carriers, which are pretty much full cruisers, or any of the single hangar types, but the science carriers like the Vo'Quv don't really have an obvious path to getting ship damage, especially on this budget. Their turn rate is terrible, which is a problem for most things, they have only 6 weapons so getting a lot from energy weapons is out, and they don't have a secondary deflector, which did do more on my science vessel build than the hangars did here.
So where did I end up, then? Well, with 6 science ability slots and not a ton of options I couldn't see not using them for some direct exotic damage. And since that required me to face forward, and the turn rate was terrible and I couldn't do much about it, I concluded that I'd have to use turrets in the rear with either beam arrays or single cannons forward, the two widest arc weapon combinations possible apart from pure turrets, although their damage potential is limited. The Chronometric set also seemed like a must have, providing a large amount of EPG and some Polaron cat1 from the tac console, and a bit of aux power from the 2 piece, but I wasn't sure whether I'd want the Morphogenic set or not, since it would mean sacrificing a cannon. Then, I went to the TRINITY DPS Calculator from STO BETTER and started plugging in some rough options. Single cannons outperformed beam arrays even with the Chronometric 3 piece, so that settled that, and getting the crtd from the Morphogenic 3 piece and Cannon Scatter Volley was well worth losing a forward cannon for the torp. Attack Pattern Beta proved a bigger contributor than expected thanks to boosting the exotic damage as well, which is why that's at 2 and CSV is at 1, and easily outperformed including a Torpedo Spread as well. Finally I switched the power settings away from a balanced configuration toward weapons over aux and aux over weapons, and the high aux version did best. So that was the build.
How did it perform? Well it was sluggish, obviously, I expected that. But the DPS was pretty impressive and was reflected in how quickly it got kills. And the survivability was pretty good, with a lot of hull and pretty good healing I really couldn't complain, except that it was so sluggish it was hard to run out of range and heal if I needed to. On the other hand when I did withdraw the fighters kept fighting, contributing to the highest Wanted Elite DPS of any of the builds in the table with only one attempt needed to survive the whole mission (the science vessel could do better by charging in and dying a couple of times, but needed to play cautiously and sacrifice its CPB to survive). They were even powerful enough to handle the Birds of Prey in Starbase One Advanced without any help from the mothership, potentially even without player input, which could be convenient.

This skill tree is my generalist one from Strict Budget Build part 2, and it pretty much needs to be. This build relies on both energy weapon and exotic damage, so it can't afford to neglect either one. There are other generalist skill trees, of course, but that is what you'll need to be looking for, any single purpose tree isn't going to get the job done.

Ship Loadout: Vo'Quv Carrier

Slot  Item  Notes
Fore Weapon 1  Polaron Cannon  The one Mk XV, single cannons are usually a poor choice, but they will outperform beam arrays forward/turrets aft and provide 180 degrees of firing arc
Fore Weapon 2  Polaron Cannon  The Vo'Quv suffers from terrible turn rate so it doesn't want weapons with narrow arcs, but it needs to face forward for the exotic damage
Fore Weapon 3  Morphogenic Polaron Energy Torpedo Launcher   Here for the 3 piece set bonus providing 30% crtd to the whole ship

Aft Weapon 1  Heavy Chronometric Polaron Turret  Mostly need a turret, 2 piece provides some aux
Aft Weapon 2  Morphogenic Polaron Energy Weapon   Another turret, and contributes to the 3 piece
Aft Weapon 3  Polaron Turret  Just a turret

Deflector  Solanae Deflector Array Mk XII Very Rare  Provides more EPG out of the box than any other mission reward
Impulse Engines  Sol Defense Impulse Engines Mk XII Very Rare  With the bonus from getting hit this does just provide the best total turn rate out of the mission rewards at 14.7 degrees/s, replace with Fortified Competitive rep engines
Warp Core  Obelisk Subspace Rift Warp Core  This build only hits 122 aux so this doesn't actually help, could consider Deuterium-Stabilized but the benefit is minimal
Shields  Sol Defense Covariant Shield Array Mk XII Very Rare  2 piece is nice for survivability, alternative would be Jem'Hadar 2 piece for a bit of Polaron cat1.

Devices  Exotic Particle Flood  Crafted in Science R&D. I do have to admit that the materials are a little hard to come by, and Admiralty (with account unlocked ships) is the best source I've found.
Deuterium Surplus  Evasive Maneuvers in battery form, and you can collect 4 per day from the Alhena system.
Delta Alliance Reinforcements Beacon  Handy damage boost

3 Engineering Consoles  Console - Engineering - Trellium-D Plating Mk XII Very Rare  Good survivability console, could use a Neutronium instead
Console - Engineering - Polaric Modulator Mk XII Very Rare  Boosts Inertia, which is rare, as well as turn rate, and slipstream turn rate at warp
Console - Engineering - House Martok Defensive Configuration Mk XII Very Rare  Boosts turn rate and provides some survivability, an RCS would work too

4 Science Consoles  Console - Science - Temporal Disentanglement Suite Mk XII Very Rare  Nice crit and durability boost, plus some power.
Console - Science - Temporally Shielded Datacore Mk XII Very Rare  Slightly less EPG than Particle Generators but it makes up for it with the CtrlX
Console - Science - Particle Generator Mk XII Uncommon  Just need EPG
Console - Science - Particle Generator Mk XII Common

2 Tactical Consoles  Console - Tactical - Morphogenic Matrix Controller Mk XII Very Rare  For the 3 piece and some polaron cat1
Console - Tactical - Chronometric Capacitor Mk XII Very Rare  Good EPG, some aux from the 2 piece, and some Polaron cat1, and this build uses all of it

2 Hangar Bays  Hangar - To'Duj Fighters  These provide more DPS than any other hangar that's available by default, and they come with the ship, they will die in heavy AoE content, otherwise use two
Hangar - Delta Flyers  These have slightly less DPS than To'duj but never die in any content, but do require a level 65 KDF character for Cross Faction Flying, could substitute B'rels for more DPS loss

Officer Details

Bridge Officers
Lt. Commander Tactical  Tactical Team I  Shield distribution and debuff clear, may cause firing cycle problems but I haven't seen it
Cannon: Scatter Volley I  Excellent weapon damage buff and also spreads APB to up to 3 targets
Attack Pattern Beta II  Unusual to slot this above the firing mode, but it boosts every damage source and weapon damage is only ~1/4 of the total

Lt. Commander Engineering  Emergency Power to Engines I  More than doubles speed and provides +2 turn rate, essential mobility for any build
Auxiliary to Structural I  Excellent heal and damage resist, and on a very short cooldown
Emergency Power to Weapons III  Major energy weapon damage boost

Commander Science  Hazard Emitters I  Good hull heal and debuff clear
Destabilizing Resonance Beam Good exotic damage, used with GW
  Photonic Officer II  Cooldown reduction
Gravity Well III  Good exotic damage and control

Lieutenant Science  Science Team I  Shield heal and debuff clear
Tyken's Rift I  Exotic damage, alternate with GW

Traits & Duty Officers

Trait  Name  Description  Notes
Personal Traits  Astrophysicist    A little bit of EPG
Cannon Training    A little more cannon damage
Conservation of Energy    Significant exotic damage while solo, but stacks don't last long
Deft Cannoneer    Boosts turn rate by 1, on this build we need it, from Cannons R&D
Fleet Coordinator    One of the best traits in the game when on a team
Give Your All    Excellent hull damage resistance
  Operative    Some extra crit
Particle Manipulator    The most powerful trait for exotic damage, +50%/+29.6% crth/crtd on this build, from Science R&D
Photonic Capacitor    Extra Photonic Fleet is nice to have

Starship Traits  None    Unconventional Tactics from completing Strategist is definitely worth slotting here, but I kept it cheap.

Space Reputation Traits  None    You'll start picking these up very quickly, Precision and Advanced Targeting Systems are top picks.

Duty Officers  Projectile Weapons Officer    "Law" from A Fistful of Gorn, a bit of a pain to get there, but worth having
Projectile Weapons Officer    A common included in my first duty officer pack
Astrometrics Scientist    Uncommon, also in my first pack, handy to have set
Conn Officer    From Phoenix, a must have for mobility in any build

This table shows all damage sources in one Wanted Advanced run, with multiple lines from the same source summed together.

Now, let's talk keybinds. In STO on PC you're going to want to learn keybinding eventually, and most of it's not too hard and can be done through the chat window (although it is arguably better to create a separate text file with your binds, that's more complicated). The first thing I always do is to set up a secondary fire weapons button through settings, usually V, just in case I screw up and my intended fire keybind doesn't work. While I'm there I usually set Distribute Shields to Left Shift, it's a pretty good survivability boost, although a lot of people do say it can mess up firing cycles, but personally I've never noticed a problem. Then, the commands you'll want to know are "FirePhasers" or "FireAll", "+power_exec Distribute_Shields", and "+TrayExecByTray # #", where # is a number. Note that the list of commands needs quotation marks around it, and commands should be separated by "$$". So if you typed the following into the chat: /bind y "+TrayExecByTray 0 0 $$ +TrayExecByTray 0 1 $$ +TrayExecByTray 1 2 $$ +TrayExecByTray 1 3" That would create a keybind so that y would activate the first and second abilities in the row labeled 1, and the third and fourth abilities in the row labeled 2 (0 in a keybind means 1 in the UI, 1 means 2, 2 means 3, etc., that's just how it works), starting with the fourth ability in 2 and then proceeding backwards. From there on in it's personal preference, put things where they feel natural to you, where you're used to them being. What I use has evolved naturally over time, I make no claims that it's efficient, just that I'm used to it, and I use it on everything. For fire weapons, distribute shields, Emergency Power abilities, cooldown reduction, often Aux to Structural, and anything else I just want to keep active I use spacebar, like this: /bind space "FireAll $$ +power_exec Distribute_Shields $$ +TrayExecByTray 6 0 $$ +TrayExecByTray 6 1 $$ +TrayExecByTray 6 2 $$ +TrayExecByTray 6 3 $$ +TrayExecByTray 6 4" That's the first 5 slots in row 7, which is usually enough. Then for my firing modes, Attack Pattern Beta, and so on, things with short cooldowns I activate as I attack, I use the 7 key, no good reason for that it just happened, and the first 4 slots in row 3: /bind 7 "+TrayExecByTray 2 0 $$ +TrayExecByTray 2 1 $$ +TrayExecByTray 2 2 $$ +TrayExecByTray 2 3" And finally for my exotic builds I always put Gravity Well and Destabilizing Resonance beam on 2, using the next two slots in row 3, although it is true that the usual logic behind that doesn't apply here, I just did it out of habit: /bind 2 "+TrayExecByTray 2 4 $$ +TrayExecByTray 2 5" That's all the keybinds I use, everything else I activate manually, one at a time, but it does compress 13 keys I might want to be pressing down to 3, which helps a lot.
Now, the difficult thing about this build is that I really don't know how to suggest upgrading it, apart from the obvious necessity of some Competitive Reputation engines to get their Overcharge to improve turn rate, I made sure to use Aux to Structural to pair with the Fortified version of those. The damage is very divided between different types, with about 40% from hangars, 25% from exotics, and 21% from energy weapons, and it's not getting a lot out of any of them, but I'll provide my own ideas and the STO BETTER Basics links for all three. Currently the biggest damage source is the hangars, but trying to improve those would be expensive. Ideally you'd like to pick up Superior Area Denial from the Mirror Strike Wing Escort lockbox ship, or at least the Independent Wingmate space trait, but those are very expensive compared to this build. Even the more minor and less powerful Advanced Engineering – Hangar Craft Power Transmission consoles are starting at 1 million energy credits each on PC for either a Mk XII with a useless mod or a Mk II with an [EPG] mod, or 5 million for a Mk II with [Polaron], while Swarmer Matrix is going for 7 million. If you wanted to work on exotic damage you could of course pick up the Temporal reputation two piece, and then you might want Subspace Vortex or Very Cold in Space to replace the heals with some more damage, but those will cost you 9 million, and really you'd want to pair them with Spore Infused Anomalies from the Somerville or Batlh C-store ships for a truly potent source of exotic damage. You might be able to get good exotic damage out of the Gravimetric Photon and Particle Emission Plasma torpedoes after picking up the Competitive engines, and those aren't as expensive, but they do give you a much narrower arc. And if you wanted to improve the energy weapons, of course there are reputation items you can pick up starting with the Discovery reputation shield, but you're pretty limited by the combination of poor turn rate and forward firing exotics. You could try to switch to dual (heavy) cannons, probably moving the torpedo to the rear and dropping the plain turret, but I don't think I'm a good enough pilot to pull that off even with Competitive engines, which would leave you with single cannons which have underwhelming base damage and very few set items to support them. I just don't know what direction to go in to make a really impactful improvement in this build.
Finally, here's the table of DPS testing in the Wanted patrol for all five equivalent budget builds. The Luna used the original, unaltered Strict Budget Build, using the mentioned swap of Emergency Power to Shields instead of Aux to Structural for better survivability against non-Borg. The Vor'cha sat somewhere between parts one and two of the Baby Step series, meaning it had exactly the same consoles as the Hegh'ta BoP and similar ones to the Jem Escort, and the beam equivalents of the phaser weapons, with exactly the abilities and personal traits in the Baby Step posts. It must also be said that the Vor'cha and Vo'quv were the only builds to never die on elite difficulty, and the Vor'cha was definitely the toughest, although all the builds took about 20 minutes to get through the mission so using them at that difficulty is a bad idea. The Hegh'ta of course used the Quick Looks 1 build, and the Jem Escort used the Quick Looks 2 build.
Elite (DPS thousands) Advanced 1 (DPS thousands) Advanced 2 Advanced 3 Advanced 4 Advanced Average
Hegh'ta Heavy BoP 20.0 20.1 21.5 22.5 23.2 21.8
Jem'hadar Escort 19.3 23.4 20.6 21.8 19.7 21.4

2024.05.15 09:19 AggressiveVast586 My parents are splitting up and I don't know what to do

My parents are horrible for each other, too stubborn and antagonistic to ever live peacefully together. My entire childhood was spent keeping them off each other's throats and making sure one didn't kill the other. My mom is confrontational and has this tendency of fixating on a topic for days. Like literally will pick a topic and continue berating or belittling for days on end. She has faced a lot from extreme financial stress to near torture from her parents-in-law. It's not an excuse but just a fact
My dad is stubborn and doesn't think before he speaks, and takes things lightly, never thinking about the other person. He has ever been financially stable but asked my mom to leave her high-paying job to look after me and my sister when we were younger.
Both are manipulative to a fault and will make sure that everyone around them is either obeying every word they have spoken or both will resort to violence. Both me and my sister have been beaten black and blue on multiple occasions.
I have spent 18 years keeping the two of them together, making sure that fights don't escalate too much, making sure that if nothing, they stayed together for my sister, who was too young to handle their separation. A couple days ago, the two of them pushed each other too far and my dad finally broke, telling her that once the debts were gone, he would leave too. He plans to get me out of the house too, leaving my mom and sister together. I don't plan on leaving my sister alone with either of them but I'm still only a second year in university in Engineering and dual enrolled for 2 different degree programs. Even if I take out a loan to support my studies, I cannot support her studies too at this juncture. I have finals in a couple days and them splitting up is all I can think about. I know that their relationship is toxic and they deserve to be free of it but they are my parents and I'm worried about what happens next to my sister and I as we are largely dependent on them. My sister doesn't know anything and I'm terrified. Please advice, especially how not to fall apart.

2024.05.15 09:16 Exact-Anybody1734 My brother has turned into a pretentious jerk

Hi Reddit, so I’ll try to keep this as concise as possible while still giving you all the facts. Let us start from the beginning, my at the time 21 y.o. step-brother, was going through his first big break up. Instead of confiding in others or taking time to understand his emotions he instead picked up a book about the stages of love. Let me also explain that my brother has never been the smartest guy and mainly gets by on his good looks and charm in his life. Anyway this book gave the usual “love requires fighting to work it shows that you care about the other” you know stuff everyone already knows. I’m guessing because it came from a book ,or because it was plainly saying what he was too naive to understand about what he was feeling, he became infatuated with every line. Anytime I would have relationship problems he would quote the self help books he had read since and recommend me ones to read. This went on for while but eventually I finished nursing school and moved out of my family’s house (which is my mother’s house, this is important for later) to start working.
Now fast forward to four years later. I’m living on my own with my the love of my life, working the night shift in the hospital like I’ve always wanted. On my way home on night I called my mom to catch up on my drive home. We started talking and eventually I asked about my step-brother. She explained that he was still living at home and had no plans on getting a job or moving out (for context my brother graduated with a master’s degree a year ago). I found that odd and asked what he is doing now. My mom explained that he just makes music and does podcasts with his friends. He apparently says he wants to be an entrepreneur. Which is fine everyone wants to make it big doing what they love doing however. My mother also explained that he constantly invites people she doesn’t know to her house to hangout and when she gets off of work she comes home to strangers that expect her to cook for them. My mother then started tearing up saying “I don’t feel like it’s my house anymore”. That’s when I got upset. I asked her why doesn’t she kick him out or at least start asking for rent so he has to get a job. She explained that she wanted to do that but my step father wouldn’t allow it. My mother and step father have a wonderful marriage and never fight, but because my stepbrother is his son he has attachment to him. My mom recently had to kick her daughter (my blood related sister) into the camper as well since my step sister (19 y.o.) lets her boyfriend stay on weekends in what used to be the girls room. My mother keeps explaining that all of these situations are putting stress on their marriage and by kicking out her daughter she feels like she betrayed her just so my stepfather’s kids can get their way in her house.
After this phone call I was livid so I called my step brother to confront him. After asking the normal “hi how are you” I asked if he has started looking for a job and he said “why would I?”. I responded “so you can work and move out”. Then he said “im in my 20s this is the time you are supposed to chase your dreams” he then pointed out that I always wanted to be a YouTuber or streamer and I should go for it. I then said you know I have a job now and I have to give that job a lot of my time in order to afford the life I live. He basically laughed and explained that there is always enough time. Not much important was said after that.
Now fast forward a few weeks later I see posts from his Instagram talking about how “social media is poison, take back your life, put down your phone, etc.” (Crazy to post that on social media btw). I have also come across his podcast which are just him and his friend who both have the combined IQ of a beheaded chicken explain that the universe is big and has like billions of stars and stuff. 0.0 his entire personality now is saying basic facts at the surface level and then acting like it’s deep as fuck. Furthermore the constant insistence on following your passion mixed with the complete ineptitude of being able to comprehend how smug and pretentious he is during any interaction has breed some real distain from anyone who can see through his act.
All of these posts about self help combined with the complete ignorance of how his actions putting a negative effect on our family has really put a barrier between us. I really don’t think I can take it anymore and I want to either try to explain that he has become a pretentious douche who only keeps around yes men who all think a fact for 5th graders they learn at the zoo makes them better than everyone else, but I honestly think he will just say I don’t understand or maybe I should read this book about stress. I’ve went over the situation with friends of mine and they all laugh when they see his posts and hear him talk now. For God sake he held his 25th birthday party recently and said for everyone to bring a book to exchange knowledge to one another and wear business casual.
I just want my mom to feel like the home she worked tirelessly as a single mother all those years to afford for our family is hers. I have always been so close to my brother and I want him back as a friend. I want my sister to be able to live in the house she was raised in instead of in a camper.
Well that’s everything as of now left out a lot of stories about him being directly wrong about facts he tells us or times he got called out and embarrassed about shit but I think I’ll just leave it here. I plan on confronting him soon I just don’t know what to say. Thank you for your time.

2024.05.15 09:10 koriander11 Student Visa Timelines

Hi guys, I am applying for a UK student visa from India. I have gotten into the university of Nottingham and the course starts on 23rd Sept.
Problem: I am also visiting the UK in July with a visit visa. My visa consultant told me that if I apply for my uk student visa before the trip that my visit visa will be cancelled.
Current situation: So because of this problem we are continuing the trip plans and coming back in August to apply on a priority visa
Timeline questions: If I come back on 26th August we will need about 3 days to collect the bank statements So we can submit the online application only on let’s say Sept 1st What is the situation with visa appointment availability for student visas? My consultant said I will easily get a visa appointment slot within a week of submitting (so maybe Sept 5th) Is this right? Cause I also hear about visa slot availability lilty being the main issue generally And if I choose priority visa, does this help me get a slot sooner?
I am aware that priority visa will help me get my visa within a week after doing the visa appointment but my main question is will I get a visa appointment easily?
SORRY FOR THE RANT. but please let me know if this situation sounds too risky, else I’ll have to give up going on the trip 😭😭😭

2024.05.15 09:08 rickypark Can unpaid medical bills cause me a lot of issues in the future?

For context:
In fall of 2021, I was admitted to a mental health facility. I stayed for a week, and had a pending charge of around $1000. I had undiagnosed ADHD at the time, and was majoring in architecture, so I never got around to paying. In spring 2022, I tried paying my bills online, but was unable to pay because the website didn't have a record of my stay. Pushing it off again, I never called my insurance provider or the hospital regarding this.
Currently, I'm staying in my home country until around 2027, where I will study in the U.S. for a year. Towards 2029, I plan on either starting a masters program, or applying for an internship/entry level position (likely with a J-1 visa).
My questions:
  1. Will the unpaid medical fees pose issues when applying for my J-1 visa?
  2. Will my future credit score be affected, even after the 7 years?
  3. Could I face legal action? Both before and after the 4 year stature of limitations in PA
  4. How do I know if my debt has been sent to collections?
  5. Will this affect my insurance rates and eligibility in the future?
I'm young, and still figuring out how debt and finances work. Also, I want to know if I should pay this or sweep it under the rug. Let me know if there's anything else I will need to know. Thank you.

2024.05.15 09:06 hades3866 Ms or Bs?

Hi everyone!
I'm currently a 3rd year biotechnology student and wish to do a PhD in HCI. However, I do not have any background or research experience with HCI so I wanted to get some additional qualifications before I apply for a PhD.
Master's degrees in HCI, from what I've heard, are quite expensive and have no research opportunities as well. So I decided to do a second bachelor's degree in computer science to help me out with the lack of research experience.
A 4 year degree gives me enough time and because I would've had previous experience being an undergrad, I assume it wouldn't be too hard. I plan on doing it in my country of residence in a university that is well accredited and has a QS world ranking of 300 (my current university ranks 900). They also offer scholarships and financial grants and the tuition is quite similar to what I'm paying right now which isn't that expensive. I also plan on getting a job to save up for my PhD and get more insight on the field.
The only question is, should I? Should I study for another 4 years and then another 5? CS degrees are always useful and you can never go wrong and if I do apply for a 2nd undergraduate, I'd be graduating in 2029 when hopefully the economy gets better. HCI is something I've wanted to do for a while know but also I believe that a more mainstream CS degree would've been helpful for HCI.
What are your thoughts?

2024.05.15 09:02 idk_idk121 Planning to work in the US, lookig for advice

I'm planning to go to college here in the Philippines and wish to work somewhere environment-related.
So far the bachelor's degrees I'm gonna apply to are: - geology - geodetic engineering - agricultural and biosystems engineering - civil engineering - environmental science - geography
I'll be staying here after I get my bachelor's degree, some work experience, and pass my licensure exam. After that, I'll look for some better opportunities abroad. Even though I live in the Philippines I hold US citizenship and a US passport, so I was wondering if I can get a well-paying job there.
I'm okay with any sort of work environment but I'm really looking forward to doing a lot of fieldwork. I also have some experience in programming and QGIS
Do you guys think it'll be hard to secure a job in the states based on my situation? Will any of them recognize any of the universities I'll apply in or the experience I'll get here?

2024.05.15 08:54 Icy-Preference4567 Feel like I`ve stuck and see no way out. Help me find a career related to my field that would pay decently.

Hello. I`m 29 years old and live in Moscow, Russia . My education background: Associate degree in ESL; Bachelor`s degree in Linguistics ( Theory and methodology of teaching foreign languages and foreign cultures); Master`s degree in cross-cultural communication and modern linguistics; Aspirantura ( Ph.D program) diploma in Psychology and a Ph.D in Christian Counseling from an American Protestant Seminary. Currently, I`m working in Academia and my salary is extremely low. I really don't want to come off as greedy, but having a high salary is vital for me. Is it possible to earn 2500-3000 dollars per month net with my background? What needs to be adjusted and done? Is it worth considering a career change? In my case with tranfering into IT or Business? If yes, what job would be suitable for me to earn that much? Preferably, without getting a new degree (if it's really necessary, I will do that, though). If I moved to another country, what country would more likely accept my credentials? Plus, keep in mind that I`m a non-native English speaker and the fact might affect employers` perception and attitude towards me. Thank you for you suggestions, folks.

2024.05.15 08:52 Latter-Equipment4599 [Masters Career Switch Need Advice] Shall I switch form Computer Engineering to Psychology?

I am a software engineer with a bachelor's degree in Computer Engineering who has realized maybe 6-7 months ago that Psychology is where I belong. I genuinely beleive that I can contribute a lot to the field and it's a field that I find very fascinating. I have completed Bachelor's level psychology from self studying (obviously don't have degree in it). Now, I really want to pursue Masters (preferably in som euniversity in US or UK; I am from India btw) in Psychology. I did some resarch on how to achieve this and what are the career prospects after this and what is the general trend in Psych these days. I think I should mention that it isn't just some burnt out fascination that is stemming out from ubearable software industry but from a point of view that psychology is a field that I truly beleive in. I have 3 years of experience in software engineering industry, so I am well established in this field and I am good at what I do but it isn't something that I expect I will enjoy doing for next 10-15 years.
I am seeking some advice or strategies on this. Has anyone of you switched careers like this? How should I approach this problem from admission perspective as I don't have any research background or any link to the field for that matter.
If you don't think this is agood idea, please talk me out of it. I genuinely want to listen to both sides.
Thanks in advance!!

2024.05.15 08:48 X-Deodate ASEF Young Leaders Summit?

Was wondering if anyone had signed up before and attended? How was the experience like and was it worth it?
I saw an email from my university about it and it looked interesting. Just not sure if it's really worth it for the portfolio or networking?
This was what it stated on the website but I can't find much info outside regarding this program. The ASEF Young Leaders Summit (ASEFYLS) is a Youth platform that connects young people across Asia & Europe, applying a 360 degree approach on leadership development and community engagement: 1) self-leadership (you), 2) team leadership (we) and 3) societal leadership (all).

2024.05.15 08:46 muumuufuukuu I've moved ~30 times, and I have a wide range of random life experiences that made me open-minded and a good listener. AMA

I used to move at least once a year until I was 25yo. Afterwards, I had 2 more moves before settling down in a house I bought with my husband. The constant moving around is an indication of a pretty tumultuous life. Along the way, I've experience a lot of different things and met some interesting characters. AMA, some background:
I grew up super poor in a dysfunctional family. My mom left when I was 10 and my dad left when I was 13. I had an older brother that took care of me, but he was a teenager himself and deeply involved with gangs. He passed away in his 20s. My parents recently came back into my life, and we're on cordial terms.
Some of the moves were because my parents were crazy nomadic people. Some of the moves were because I was passed around from family to family after my parents left. In between, I've been to Juvie and group homes a few times, also been "homeless" for short periods. I've also moved to hide from people, and moved to start a new life somewhere else. Because there's been so many moves, I don't know the exact number of times... My estimate is around 30 times.
I was lucky enough to have a second chance in life when I was accepted to a prestigious university (one of the top 15 in the US). I took a Greyhound and moved into the dorms with 2 bags. There, I met a whole new group of people (well-to-do college kids) that I've never seen before. I went to college to reinvent myself; this was the time when I learned to be more "normal" in terms of social context.
After uni, I moved halfway across the country for my graduate degree. After that, I moved across the country again to be with my then bf/ now husband. Today, I work as a researcher at a R01 university: I'm not faculty, but I run a research service facility for the school, and I teach/ mentor any students (undergrad, Master's, and PhD students) that study in my lab. Because of my unique position, and that (I've been told many times) I'm a good listener, almost everyone working in our 3-story building comes to talk to me. I'm almost like a secret keepe information broker.
The pros of having done and seen a lot is that I'm very open minded. Human nature rarely surprises me anymore. The cons though, is that I've had my own trauma responses, some more irrational than others. Either way, I'm often told that I'm a good listener because I'm not judgemental and I'm very calming and understanding.
Thanks for reading. AMA

2024.05.15 08:41 icameonapizza my parents are putting me into civil services coaching though I don't want that

I want to pursue psychology and I know there isn't a lot of scope in it in India but still I want to do studying something I'm genuinely into. I was preparing for neet in 11th and half way through 12th and then I started failing physics at school so finally they agreed to get me out of aakash. 12th results came out and I got 81 in physics. my parents have shown nothing towards my result but embarrassment. my mom yelled at me when I told her that results came out. she said she's ashamed of my performance and it brings her feel embarassed in front of others to tell my result. I mean is she wrong? I don't think so. for college they're sending me to amity just because their friends kids study there. my parents have not had one conversation with me abt my future ever since school got over. it's only been an announcement that my life is already decided by them.the last time I brought it up my mom started throwing utensils. so I'm scared to again. they don't want me to get a ba degree because "ba is for poor people". they want me to do bsc in biotech which they know nothing abt but since it's bsc degree so it's fine for them. and tbh at this point I was considering that okay I'll do biotech for their sake but turns out they want me to do biotech and coaching for upsc. I don't want to do upsc. and now I'm stuck in this. all my life has been governed by my parents and I've honestly lost touch with them. I barely talk to them anymore because the previous few times I did my mom told me to shut up.
sorry it's long. I don't even have friends to talk to this about so here I'm. thanks for reading

2024.05.15 08:39 Yurii_S_Kh "He that honoreth not the Son honoreth not the Father which hath sent him"

Christ is risen, dear brothers and sisters! Today, the Gospel of John (John 5: 17-24) is read during the divine service.
17 But Jesus answered them, My Father worketh hitherto, and I work.
18 Therefore the Jews sought the more to kill him, because he not only had broken the sabbath, but said also that God was his Father, making himself equal with God.
19 Then answered Jesus and said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, The Son can do nothing of himself, but what he seeth the Father do: for what things soever he doeth, these also doeth the Son likewise.
20 For the Father loveth the Son, and showeth him all things that himself doeth: and he will show him greater works than these, that ye may marvel.
21 For as the Father raiseth up the dead, and quickeneth them; even so the Son quickeneth whom he will.
22 For the Father judgeth no man, but hath committed all judgment unto the Son:
23 that all men should honor the Son, even as they honor the Father. He that honoreth not the Son honoreth not the Father which hath sent him.
24 Verily, verily, I say unto you, He that heareth my word, and believeth on him that sent me, hath everlasting life, and shall not come into condemnation; but is passed from death unto life.
Today's passage in John's Gospel is about the relationship between the Father and the Son.
After the healing of the paralytic on the Sabbath, the Jews hostile to the Lord (by whom John the Evangelist usually means the Pharisees, Sadducees, and Jewish elders), came to Christ with a plan to kill Him for breaking the Sabbath. They seem to have meant the words in the holy books of Moses about honoring the Sabbath:
And the seventh day is the Sabbath to the Lord thy God: thou shalt not do any work in it, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy ox, nor thy ass, nor any of thy cattle, nor any stranger that is in thy dwellings (Exodus 20:10).
And God finished His works which He did by the seventh day, and rested on the seventh day from all His works which He did (Gen. 2, 2).
Alexander P. Lopukhin writes: “The Sabbath of God became for God a rest only from the works of creation, and God never ceased to be engaged in the work of working on the created world. And hence it followed that the rest, which, according to the requirement of the Moises Law, the Jews had to keep on the Sabbath, did not consist at all in a complete cessation of all activity, but only in a certain change of man's usual occupations to others, which do not represent anything difficult for man at all, but rather contribute to the renewal of his strength."
To such activities, which do not belong to the ordinary activities, Christ attributes the healing He performed on the Sabbath. He is therefore unjustly accused of violating the commandment of God. The Savior justifies His right to do works on the Sabbath by saying, “My Father hath done until now, and I do also" (John 5:17). Christ is the consubstantial Son of God, and therefore, as having the same nature with God, He acts as freely as God.
The Jews begin to accuse Christ further, wanting to put Him to death for breaking the Sabbath and for calling God His Father, making Himself equal with God (John 5:18).
In response, the Savior reveals to them the teaching of the unity of the Father's and the Son's actions on the example of the usual ideas of the son imitating the father and the father loving the son and teaching him his works: "Truly, truly, I say to you, the Son can do nothing of Himself, unless He sees the Father doing it: for what He does, the Son also does" (John 5, 19). The Son, like the Father, can not only heal the paralytic, but also raise the dead: for as the Father raises the dead and makes them alive, so also the Son makes alive whom He will (John 5, 21).
Archbishop Averky (Taushev) explains: “First we speak here of the spiritual resurrection, of the awakening of the spiritually dead to true, holy life in God, and then of the general bodily resurrection, and both of these resurrections are in close inner connection with each other. Man's perception of the true life, the spiritual life, is the beginning of his triumph over death.”
With the spiritual resurrection the Lord connects His other great work - to judge: For the Father also judges no one, but has given all judgment to the Son (John 5:22).
And here, first of all, it speaks of the moral judgment in the present life, which will lead to the final universal Last Judgment. Christ appeared as Life and Light into a spiritually dead and spiritually darkened world. Those who believed in Him rose to new life and became light themselves. Those who rejected Him remained in darkness.
Thus, the fate of men is in the complete power of the Son of God, and that is why we should honor him as we honor the Father.
We, dear brothers and sisters, should remember that to honor the Lord means not only to listen to the word of God, but also to obey, that is, to believe in Christ, who was sent by the heavenly Father, and to do His will with love. And only in this way the Kingdom of God is opened on earth, the transition from death to eternal life, the transition to God the Father - in Christ and with Christ.
Help us in this, risen Lord!

2024.05.15 08:32 sydlyvicious Wycon Flawless Skin Perfector -- anyone know where this product is?

Does anyone else use this product and have you had issues restocking it? It's still being sold and promoted in stores but I cannot find my shade in the store, so naturally I go to order online. The product page isn't even there anymore but the staff in the store told me it was not discontinued. I cannot find the product anywhere. I found "wyconarabia" version of the website which sold it online but again, exclusively my shade is missing (cruel tricks from the universe).
I just want to see if anyone out in the makeup world who knows this brand and this product has heard anything else about whether this product still exists or not. It's literally my favorite thing so fingers crossed.

2024.05.15 08:31 Traditional_Job545 UQ proposed cutting Postgraduate Arts Program

Sadly, the The University of Queensland has released the following communication:
"The School of Social Science is proposing to phase out the Master of Museum Studies and Graduate Certificate in Museum Studies from 2025. We anticipate that Semester 2 2024 will be the final intake for these programs at UQ".
The rationale behind this is that the program is not financially viable, which highlights a frustrating trend in our society to value the bottom line over education and cultural richness. I believe, and I stand with many industry peers and UQ students in saying this; that prioritising financial incentive over quality programs will damage UQ's reputation, and affect our cultural industry.
If this is to go ahead, GLAM sector institutions will face an employment crisis, with incoming staff being either trained in an online setting from an open university-- affecting their industry experience and educational opportunities-- or face having to hire from graduates inter-state; this particularly poses issue as the GLAM sector staffing pool in QLD is already small, and phasing out the postgraduate Museum Studies Program at UQ will drastically affect the industry in years to come.
I love being a curator, and I appreciate the quality of education I have had in the Masters of Museum Studies program, particularly under the incredible tutelage of Eve Haddow Dr Caroline Wilson-Barnao and Diana J. B. Young.
I urge fellow students interested in pursuing Museum Studies or currently within the program to join with me in writing to Professor Heather Zwicker (HASS Executive Dean) and Professor Deborah Terry (Vice Chancellor of UQ), and Rebecca Lush (Galleries and Museums QLD) to have your say about the proposed decision.

2024.05.15 08:30 GreedyPersonality390 Best 41 Times Surah Ikhlas for Love Marriage

Best 41 Times Surah Ikhlas for Love Marriage
The act of repeating Surah Ikhlas 41 Times for Marriage Blessings is the process of narrating this particular Surah 41 times for the purpose of obtaining marriage blessings.
41 Times Surah Ikhlas for Love Marriage
The Surah Ikhlas is the 112th chapter of the Holy Quran and is seen as one of the most important and powerful chapters. It depicts the oneness and the particularity of Allah (SWT) in an easy but deep manner. This short surah is the place where all the great rewards and blessings will be given to you if you recite it often.
41 Times Surah Ikhlas for Marriage
It is an example of a method that one can use to ask God to bless those who are searching for a good marriage or those who are going through a tough time in their marriage. The figure 41 is a very important number in Islam. Actually, Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) said that, a person who recites Surah Ikhlas 41 times after the obligatory prayers is, undoubtedly, going to Jannah (Paradise).
Here are some key benefits of reciting Surah Ikhlas 41 times, especially for marriage:The above are the main advantages of the recitation of Surah Ikhlas 41 times, especially for marriages.
Attracts Righteous Spouse 41 Times Surah Ikhlas for Marriage
Verse 41 which is recited after each Salah is the reason why a good and compatible life partner can be yours. It is a sense of the presence of the Noor (divine light) that makes the faithful get together. The energy from such recitals is changed into the characteristics that are not consciously made, thus the right person is found easily.
Strengthens Love & Affection
The constant recitation of these verses can be the cause of more love and affection in the marital relationship of the couple. It is the conditioning of the grudges and the resentment, the coming of the tenderness, the sympathy and the thankfulness for one another which are the outcomes of such things. Problems are not that hard, and hence unity is the strongest thing.
The most advantage of not having a boyfriend or girlfriend when you are not ready is that you prevent the divorce and the variations that they might be.
The marriages which also end in divorce also get a lot from the 41 recitations of Sura Ikhlas every day. This protection of the relationship, the getting rid of the misunderstandings and the protection of the conflict and the focus on each other is what is the most important thing in the couple's life. The energy blanket is the one that heals and hence it is the one that makes marriages resilient to the common marital troubles.
Boosts Rizq & Harmony 41 Times Surah Ikhlas for Marriage
Also, Allah blesses the faithful and the coupled people with a wide range of Rizq (sustenance). Besides the wealth, Barakah is also the harmony and the purpose that must be experienced. Through the correction of the relationships, one will have a positive outlook on life and will know how to resolve the conflicts through faith. Thus, a person will feel the external and internal wealth.
Protects Lineage & Health
The former also benefits one's family. Surah Ikhlas 41 times a day is the main thing that keeps the family together, cuts the chances of hereditary diseases, and makes the family strong. The fact that the Fajr prayer is considered as a person who will highly improve these effects is a typical phenomenon.
The Easy & Accessible Act of Faith is a phrase that shows the fact that faith is easy and can be found by anyone.
The chief benefit of this activity is that it is quite simple to learn and you do not need to buy a lot of expensive stuff and spend a lot of time on it. In your tasbeeh, merely move one bead for each recitation. In a matter of minutes you will have finished the 41 rounds with all the focus and will have got the big and special divine rewards.
41 Times Surah Ikhlas for Marriage
Certainly, in addition to the oral explanation, also look at the profound meaning of Surah Ikhlas. Show great appreciation to the myriad of wonderful traits of Allah that are uniquely and at the same time, universally described. The good deeds that are sincere and regular really only for the Divine are much greater than the good deeds that are done for the human kind.
InshAA, this tiny effort may just be the way to realize the most marital blessings by the kindness of the Most Loving Creator. Keep to the routine, pray firmly, and only look for the reward from Allah - and have complete faith that He would send you!
