Just wanted to quickly let everyone know during the show tonight in London the maestro talked about the love for all of the villagers - except Pierre, who was specifically called out as unworthy. Truly a man of culture.

I really want to like the Sonic Symphony and want to see it in real life, but the fact that this 'world tour' is in the US and London only, I can't and it makes me quite sad. Like get real, if it was a world tour, why aren't they in other countries? Like there are many fans outside America and London, but I think it will never happen in other countries.

Anyone going and is it weird to bring my switch to try connect with yall xD?

Over the course of the 19th-century, music gained in prestige until many began to consider it the most significant of all the arts. In an age of rapid social change and scientific progress, many questioned established traditions, and art—especially music—seemed to provide spiritual sustenance in an age of doubt. It is against this cultural background that Richard Strauss (aged just 25 in 1889) completed his most ambitious tone poem yet: Tod und Verklärung (Death and Transfiguration), a work that explores the mystery of death and what might lie beyond. Though Strauss himself had adopted a decidedly secular worldview as a teenager, he brilliantly depicted the physiological and psychological states of a dying man with almost scientific precision, using the most advanced orchestrations and harmonies of his time. The piece was not based on any personal experience, but intriguingly, on his deathbed Strauss remarked that “dying is exactly as I composed it sixty years ago in Tod und Verklärung.”
Strauss provided his own summary: “[…] it occurred to me to present in the form of a tone poem the dying hours of a man who had striven towards the highest idealistic aims, maybe indeed those of an artist.”
In the slow introduction, “The sick man lies in bed, asleep, with heavy irregular breathing; friendly dreams [in the form of woodwind and violin solos] conjure a smile on the features of the deeply suffering man.” When the tempo quickens, “he wakes up; he is once more racked with horrible agonies; his limbs shake with fever” amidst an orchestral maelstrom. Suddenly, the storm breaks as a new theme resounds in the trumpet, trombones, and tuba: the first glimpse of transfiguration.
The music fades “as the attack passes and the pains leave off,” and a gentle theme from the introduction returns as he falls asleep again: “his thoughts wander through his past life; his childhood passes before him […]” A momentary attack of pain cinematically cuts to “the time of his youth with its strivings and passions”: the protagonist appears as a strapping young man with a faster, fanfare-like theme for horns and winds. Another cinematic cut from the violins leads to an unmistakable Straussian love scene, but during this passionate love-dream “the pains already begin to return,” and the music of love and suffering combine in a searing, intense passage of virtuoso complexity.
All at once, the pain falls away, and the transfiguration theme now appears in a more complete guise: “there appears to him the fruit of his life’s path, the conception, the ideal which he has sought to realize, to present artistically, but which he has not been able to complete, since it is not for man to be able to accomplish such things.” But, in order to be transfigured, he must leave this world. The pained music of the slow introduction returns as “The hour of death approaches […]” The intense music of suffering returns once more, vanishing with the stroke of a gong as “the soul leaves the body in order to find gloriously achieved in everlasting space those things which could not be fulfilled here below.”

Morning!
I'm (40M) an amateur brass player (trumpet and French horn) playing in an amateur symphony orchestra. We often have programs where there are several string-only parts. We're short of both violas and cellos. My wrists aren't the best or most supple in the world - my family has a history of rheumatoid arthritis. It seems to have skipped me, but I'm still in general a bit less supple than many.
One of my violinist friends recommended that, between cello and viola, the cello will be a bit more forgiving on my wrists, and will also a bit more forgiving in terms of intonation for a beginner player. What are your thoughts on this?
Secondly - I'm not expecting to ever make this my main instrument (we're even more short on horn players), so I'll be aiming for the last desk of the 2nd cellos. I'm thus looking for the most affordable instrument that won't cause the conductor to search for a lighter. Cervini, Flame Lily, Sonata, Mason, Stentor, Jinyin and Sadner are all locally available and seem to have student models that are sort of affordable. Are any of them dependable brands?
The local (South African) used cello market doesn't seem to have much beyond the already listed names. I'll enquire from a few of the local music shops as to rental options, but I doubt that they offer the options.

I need help choosing my next big concerto (I plan on working on it long term so I can play it for future competition and school auditions).
I grew up with Mozart and Haydn concertos under my last teacher. Before my teacher left abroad, I was given an option either Bruch concerto no. 1 or Lalo's Symphonie Espagnole.
However, most of my local competition and orchestra audition requirements do not include the Bruch no. 1 (but Bruch 2 or Scottish Fantasy is in the list). Lalo, fortunately, is in the list.
Will the Lalo be okay or is it too hard? Though I can just polish my Mozart 4 or 5 (Mozart 3 is sadly not on the list), or even Haydn C since they're on the usual audition list, I feel it won't give me an edge since a classical concerto is very hard to stand out in auditions. Are there other concertos I can explore?

This weekend marked the Cincinnati Symphony's last concerts of the 23-24 Season, and of course with it the last concerts of Louis Langree's 11 year tenure as the Orchestra's Music Director.
There were performances on Friday and Saturday evening, and the very last one was this Sunday afternoon at 2 pm. There was zero chance that I would be missing this.
Before the start of the concert, the CSO President came out and said some kind words about Maetro Langree, reminding us of the many milestones reached during that time. Louis Langree addressed the crown briefly, and that he would have more today during the second half of the concert.
That second half turned out to be memorable on many levels. After an inspired "The Sorcerer's Apprentice" (by the French composer Paul Dukas), Langree did address the audience, at length. He mentioned that his wife and 2 (now college-aged) kids were in the audience, and reminisced how warmly the city had welcomes them all those years ago. Langree also commented very warmly about other aspects of life in Cincinnati, including the vibrant cultural scene. His biggest complements were for the Orchestra itself, and how he loved acquiring the "Cincinnati DNA of this Orchestra". He pointed out many things about the CSO, including the fact that during his 11 year tenure, 37 musicians (more than 1/3 of the orchestra) were hired, and also that one of the orchestra's musicians was retiring after today's concert, having played 34 (!) years with the CSO.
Langree then dove into the very last piece of the day, an outstanding "Daphnis et Chloe Suite No. 2" by French composer Maurice Ravel. Upon the conclusion of that deeply emotional work, the audience burst into applause, and simply would not stop applauding. I saw some people leaving but the vast majority stayed and clapped. After several minutes of this, Louis Langree addressed the audience again, expressing his gratitude, etc. Then he told the true story that after his appointment as the CSO Music Director, the first concert he saw was actually a Cincinnati Pops show, with John Morris Russell conducting the Pops (which are of course the same musicians as the Symphony) playing action movie music like Mission Impossible, and James Bond. "I was blown away" gushed Langree, and then reminded us of having "impossible dreams" when he came to Cincinnati, which he eventually ended with "I can now say: "Mission Accomplished!", and with that he led the CSO in playing the "Mission Impossible" theme.
It was by all accounts an extraordinary afternoon of music. I was also there for the last show of the departing prior Music Directors Jesus Lopez Cobos (in 2001) and Paavi Jarvi (in 2011), and it was nothing like what we witessed this afternoon at Music Hall.
Last but not least, Louis Langree reminded us that he will be back from time to time for the occasional concert, but most of all, he urged all of us to welcome the CSO's new Music Director Cristian Mӑcelaru with same warmth and open arms as he was welcomed here back in 2013.

EDIT: Solved
I used to do this, but I can not recall the free software that allowed this. It let you use the .dll I think for a given VST instrument (e.g. SpitfireAudios's BBC Symphony Orchestra, etc) and it would create a shortcut on the Desktop that I could click and have fun with my midi kyeboard and the VST instrument, all without a DAW or Kontakt. To just explore the articulations and such of the VST. Anybody know what the free software was that does this?

I'm from London in the UK and I've been here in St. Louis for about 9 years. I live in Kirkwood.
Today I realized, again, for the zillionth time - how incredible this place really is. I realized how lucky I am to be here and to live here. But this time I'm actually going to write about it.
This post might be pointless but there's much more to life than making points.
This was my day so far:

• I woke up late and my little son came to join us in bed. We snoozed for a little bit and I just closed my eyes and felt utterly blissful.
  
• I picked up a Starbucks in Frontenac. The magnificent summer was playing - voiced by Bob Marley. Some people looked serious and expressionless. I was whistling.
  
• We had decided to go to Forest Park after breakfast. That Forest Park - which oozes with utter joy, where virtually everything is free.
  
• We rented a paddle boat at the Boathouse and came across a family of turtles basking in the sun, on a log.
  
• We felt like ice cream. We went to have some delicious ice cream at Serendipity in the Grove.
  
• I had marinated Indian-style lamb chops a couple of nights ago. I grilled them on my bbq here in Kirkwood while listening to an incredible symphony of cicadas, making beautiful sounds in the ancient oak trees. I cracked open a Zwickel and just listened to the beaming, maddeningly beautiful state of the present. I guess you could see it as the unbearable lightness of being.
  
• A robin family has decided to raise a little family on a flower pot that's hanging outside - by our kitchen window. She always complains when I walk by. I try to make reassuring sounds and wave gently.
  
• A rabbit jumped across my garden, to consummate this opera. I looked at a flower. At that very moment, the flower nodded it's head.
  

I pinched myself. I just wanted to make sure that this is actually real.
I live in a totally magnificent paradise. And this beautiful day is only half way through.
If this isn't living, what is?
