2024.05.14 10:44 No_Elk6992 Can we get an activation pending Windows from OEM for Autopilot
We are planning to use Auto Pilot for our new laptops (batch of 65). We have Microsoft 365 E3 & Enterprise Mobility + Security E3 licenses for all users.
We were under the impression that a copy of Windows is already in the laptop when we buy from OEM (HP in this case) and it is getting activated from the user's license once the user signs in. However our vendor tells us that if we want Windows 11 Enterprise pre installed we have to pay additional license cost. If not we have to get laptop with only DOS installed.
I have two main questions.
- Is it same with all vendors and what is your experience ? Do we have to pay additional license cost instead of activating Windows with our own license ?
- If we have to get with DOS and deploy Windows initially what will be the fasted method ? What the methods you use?
TIA.

2024.05.14 08:21 Popular-Arachnid-981 HELP: Need advice on dating my ex's former co-worker
I am in serious need of guidance on a post breakup dating issue. A serious boyfriend (30) (Hank) and I (32) were together for 2 1/12 years and lived together for 1. We broke up in almost a year ago semi-amicably but stopped speaking 5 months ago.
Cut to now, I matched with a former co-worker of his on Hinge (Ben). Hank was “laid off” from that job in May 2023. However, they worked on the same team, interacted frequently while they worked together, and follow each other on Instagram but they do not have contact after Hank left that job (to my knowledge). My ex never liked Ben and would talk shit about him to me during our relationship so I was aware of their relation to one another.
Do I mention this to Ben at all or not? We have plans to get drinks later this week and I am conflicted. Hank is my ex and irrelevant to either of us since they no longer work together and haven’t for some time. On the other hand, it feels weird not mentioning it because I am allowing this guy to talk about himself and his job, some of which I already know via my ex. I had been playing dumb but he has since said where he works and the team/type of work he is in within the company (small team)...not to mention I have his first and last name and he is easily google-able.
I don’t want to come across as a crazy ex that is dating my ex-boyfriend’s former associates but I also don’t know that I owe him anything. I also want to give Ben a chance to bail if he thinks it’s strange. Keep in mind, when Hank and I were dating, I had gone to a few intimate dinner parties with partners and associates of the team but Ben was never there.
When is an appropriate time to bring this up?
P.S. (Read for additional background if interested + additional question:
Should I even pursue this at all? The chance of my ex and I getting back together is just about 0% but I low key still love him and in my delusional mind if I managed to really get my shit together maybe some fay we could...and I think that this would be something Hank (my ex) would find messed up as he feels as though Ben took his job from him (however unwarranted). I can't be certain but I think he may have even said it would bother him if we were to even break up and I were to start dating Ben. That being said, I know that they sexted while we were together (we had an open relationship but still). Additionally, I don't know where my ex and I even stand. I am assuming it isn't on good terms because he blocked my number (presumably because I called him a couple times post 3AM when I was drunk/high but I was messed up in the throws of a break up and that's typical toxic bs). I'm taking it to mean he is so over me and doesn't want to deal at all, thinks I am a mess, and couldn't care less. So more power to me? Part of me thinks, and hopes that he blocked me because he knew it was over and had to just make a clean break (I had heard he was having a bit if a life crisis shortly after our break up...not just bc of me but not nott bc of me)....I say this because for a few months after our break up we would text. Just about this and that. Nothing necessarily of substance but just little things. Also, right before he blocked me he had messaged me pictures of our old apartment and said "do you miss it?"...I think he was trying to reminisce but I'm not sure because I didn't respond, didn't plan to, and then called him drunk at 3AM. He didn't answer but then the next day when I texted him to apolgize for calling late (because I knew he hated that) he had blocked me and I found out he dropped off my childhood decorations at my brother's house rather than at mine.
Soooo it's over. I just can't help but hesitate because he did mean a lot to me and frankly he had some legit reasons for the break up. Not that I was cheating or anything but I was using drugs behind his back, which he was unaware of exactly but the affects of my behavior had repercussions (i.e. not wanting to have sex, being lazy, not being a proactive partner, not working out, etc.)....It's hard to say but I took it for granted..He was not saint either to be honest. He pushed for an open relationship that I didn't want but agreed because I was in love with him and I loved our connection.
Ok, I'm sorry. I got off topic. The question is - do I mention to this new guy that I used to date his former coworker? When do I bring it up, if at all? I had planned on playing dumb but feel as though I no longer can because it's been made crystal clear that they worked at the same company, at the same time, in the same group.

2024.05.14 06:08 aksu9000 How to approach a possible an hourly raise?
Background:
- Mech Engi, but engi department is so short staffed that we do Manufacturing Process Engineering, QA/QC, R&D, RMA, machine support/shop fixes, & Project Engineer positions.
- Company's starting hourly wage is not competitive @ 25/hr. Thus, high turn over rate.
- I have been working for a year, and company is already 2 months late on a company wide raise for all.
- I know historically, the first year, new grads like me get a 5/hr bump.
- However, I am being laterally (while under same title) moved to a different position that gets commission (1% of custom projects with a cap of 100k, per company policy).
- I KNOW for a fact that this company will say something along the lines that "since there is now commission, that is considered your 'raise' ".
- I also know that on Indeed, the newest offers for this Manufacturing Engineer 1 position is 28-32/hr.
Essentially, if they do even bump me to 28/hr without moving me, I am NOT getting a raise if new hires get 28/hr. Therefore, my bump needs to exceed 28/hr.
So the question is, am I asking too much? As in, ask for at least 28/hr + commission? I also understand that typical commission based salary is usually lower, but that doesn't reflect the fact that I have already been there 1 year expecting the +5/hr bump.
Some extras:
- I have access to an excel spreadsheet that shows turn over rates of all engineers. Somewhere around 2008-2010, the company mentality changed from having career engineers staying at company for 5-20 years to newer grads like me that bounce 6mo-1.5 yr.
- Company mentality would rather let someone go at X/hr then hire someone at X+Y/hr.
- I have MSME.
- Location Fullerton.
Edit 1:
- I also know how much this company up-charges b/c engineering department. I know they can afford the raise.
Edit 2:
- Company prioritizes hiring more sales and marketing over engineering because they can fill open vacancies within 1-2 weeks where engineering takes months.
- 9 engineers (4 normal, 2 supervisor, 2 shop, 1 manager).
- 2 dedicated R&D engineers.
- 1 dedicated electrical engineer.
- 16 sales (10 normal, 4 wfh, 1 supervisor, 1 manager).
- 10 marketing (8 normal, 1 general manager, 1 manager)
Edit 3:
- Marketing can push new products and other photoshopped ideas to engineering before testing and tell us it has been sold, so engineering needs to think of a way to make it reality.
- Sales can also sell some custom products which marketing likes and that becomes new products (with no testing).
- Prototypes & ecr's being all bundled into a custom product to be already sold to client then labeled as 1 work order.
- Company also does not use PDM. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

2024.05.14 01:17 This_is_athrowaway_1 Employer lied about shift differential pay and won't correct it
I am in a pickle with my employer. I work in an at-will state. I interviewed for a 2nd shift position and in the interview the supervisor stated that she no longer has access to pay information and shift differentials and that I could get that info and negotiate my salary with the recruiter from the corporate office. She said she believed differential was $1, but to confirm with the recruiter because it may have changed since she was in charge of that and only he would have access to that info, but she would also be contacting him to offer me the job. I contacted the recruiter that day who told me the differential is actually $2.75 per hou$3.75 per hour for weekends.
I should have asked for it to be in the offer letter, but when I accepted the position the offer letter it only stated my base hourly pay + "all other payroll and differentials to be paid per company policy." I have worked other evening shift jobs where the differential info was attached separately or not stated on the offer letter at all. I wasn't that worried since I had confirmed with the recruiter over the phone as requested and the supervisor confirmed he would be the only one who could give that info to me. I was training during the day shift so when I got my first evening paycheck I noticed the differential is $1. I contacted HR who told me to contact my supervisor to correct it through payroll. Turns out, the recruiter told me the incorrect amount.
My supervisor and HR rep have confirmed that this recruiter has frequent errors. They also acknowledged that he told me the wrong amount and they wished they could correct it, but because I make the highest pay in the hourly range of this position they cannot raise my base salary to reflect what I was offered. So they would change it if was making lower than that amount...when I said that is unacceptable they informed me I can no longer speak with them about this issue and "HR does not do meetings about wages." They want me to wait until the recruiter gets back next week from vacation so the chief of HR can speak with him to hear his side of the story and then after that she will have a meeting with my supervisor. They informed me I am not allowed to be a part of that meeting. I have also asked for the policy in writing that the differential is $1 to add to my personnel file to prevent any further confusion and they are unable to provide it - they told me payroll enters my location and the evening paycode in the software generates $1, but they don't actually have that info anywhere else. WTF!
All of this is documented in emails back and forth, except for my initial conversation accepting the job. Would I have any recourse for this? I realize it's not an employment contract and it was a verbal agreement, but I believe I in good faith accepted an accurate offer and multiple people have already acknowledged the mistake.
I do have a time-stamped phone call from the recruiter and a text message to my partner 1 minute later stating I would be accepting the job with a $2.75 shift differential. I quit another job and turned down a different job offer to take this one and have records that I had been applying to about 25-30 other jobs that month. I made more money in my other job, but it was causing me unnecessary stress and anxiety and I decided slightly lower pay and similar (but not as comprehensive) benefits would be better for my mental health. Now I am being paid $1.75 less per hour than I agreed to and I would have declined and stuck it out at the other job until something better came along. When negotiating pay, I had told my recruiter how much money I made at the other job and stated I wanted to get as close to that as possible based on my experience and now I feel like he lied about pay to get me to accept this job.

2024.05.14 00:51 Electrical-Gain-1716 this is why doordash as a job is a complete joke.
| I've been dashing for years now and nothing pisses me off more than orders like this!! Like what is the incentive to take these orders? You want me to drive 25 minutes around town for a customer that isn't even tipping?? Then if I decide that this isn't enough pay (because it literally isn't for the amount of gas I'd have to use to get there AND back) my acceptance rate is penalized for it? Keeping it above 50% is quite literally borderline impossible unless you're fine with accepting orders where customers aren't tipping barely anything. 75% of the orders I get (over 1,000 completed) are absolutely terrible. Leave it up to Doordash and they aren't even paying you a livable wage, then they make it seem like it's because the customers that aren't tipping, NO, it's your business that isn't paying it's workers enough money! Either don't let customers order if they aren't tipping, or stop penalizing ME for not accepting orders that you already know aren't offering enough pay. Why would I, or anyone, want to drive 30 minutes for 4.50?? By the time I get there and back I've already spent that on gas. 1) You can make less than the "guaranteed $2 minimum base pay" on order. If they are combined together when offered, often times Doordash will pay you less base pay for both, I've recieved $1.50 for orders several times without even knowing because I was offered the orders together. 2) Doordash will add money to orders when they've been declined over and over, so as a business, you ALREADY know we aren't being payed enough but yet you still make it harder for us to qualify for higher paying orders if we don't accept these literal bottom of the barrel orders. Then just to qualify for the RARE higher paying orders, I have to accept straight bs for hours making little to no pay, just to HOPE I get an order that's actually pays me even a regular tip. I work this job because I drive an extremely fuel efficient car, but outside of that, I must admit that this job is unbelievably unsustainable. Then it's always the mfs that don't tip that have all these stipulations about their order 🤦🏽♂️ I could rant about this job for hours. I'm so over this BS submitted by Electrical-Gain-1716 to doordash_drivers [link] [comments] |
2024.05.14 00:11 krusty-krab-pizza1 iPhone Configuration Guide w/ Checklist
A month or so ago I busted my phone, and it was a huge pain in the ass. Aside from some lost data which was minor, the biggest PIA was resetting MFA, getting in touch with my US banks, and any other services that were tied to my phone. The experience also made me take a step back and realize I am pretty lax with security, and if someone had gotten hold of my phone and somehow god-forbid gotten the passcode, then I'd be fucked. They could do so much damage with unlimited access to my email + MFA SMS, even in just a few hours.
As a result, I kind of went down the ADHD rabbit hole hyper-fixating on how best to "optimize" my iPhone and iCloud configuration for two things:
- If it breaks, the transition to a new device will be relatively painless. I won't have to spend several days stressing and trying to find the right international customer support number for a myriad of institutions and services to get into my accounts.
- If it gets stolen and compromised, then there will be enough barriers such that the I'll have enough time to lock down the device and/or my accounts remotely before the thief can get key data or move funds.
So I put together this guide and checklist that I thought I'd share with others. I am a programmer but by no means a security guru, and so if any IT, DevOps, or SecOps folks want to chime-in with suggestions or improvements, please do.
Requirements
- an iPhone XR, iPhone XS, iPhone 11, iPhone 12, iPhone 13, iPhone SE (2nd generation), and iPhone 14 or newer for eSIM compatibility.
- a US-based carrier with eSIM support + a pay-as-you-go model for international travel (I use Verizon)
- iOS 17 or above (may not be strictly necessary, but I know my setup works with iOS 17.4.1)
- a password manager. I personally use 1Password because it works, is reliable, has cross-device support, and is easy and intuitive. It's also only $3/month.
Dual Sim Setup
I have been rocking an iPhone 12 for the past few years, and it's served me very well. I know the newer iPhones (14 and up) no longer offer physical SIM card support, but carriers in most developing countries are behind the curve. Even if they offer eSIM support, it's been my experience that it's a major headache to get setup, there is a lack of customer support in English, and they may even require a local ID to register the eSIM. It's way easier to just head to a shop and pay $5 for a SIM card, load some funds onto it, and then you're good to go.
The eSIM has been very helpful for maintaining a US phone number for which I can receive SMS texts from my banks and other financial services as well as continue to use iMessage with all my US contacts since hardly anybody is on Whatsapp.
Most, if not all, carriers in the US support eSIMs now, and so you should try to find a carrier that offers an international pay-as-you-go plan. Verizon offers two international plans - one is a "Travel Pass" where it's a flat fee of $10/day anywhere outside the US or Canada (even for just one text message). The other is "pay for what you use" which has a rate per text, minute, and mb. For my US plan, I only care about receiving SMS texts from my banks and the occasional phone call to a service that doesn't have an international, toll-free number. Data will always be cheaper outside the US, so I disable cellular data switching for my US line.
The last time I was in the US was for the holidays and I bought 2 used iPhone 12's for about $200 each. They have some scuffs, but they're perfectly serviceable. In LATAM, it also doesn't attract nearly as much unwanted attention in the street as an iPhone 14 or 15.
I brought these with me as extra devices. When my phone busted last month, thankfully I had a backup in iCloud and everything was loaded in a few minutes as normal. This was before I was using the eSIM, but if I had the eSIM I could just go to Verizon support online via chat and they could help me switch the line to the new device easily.
Basic Configurations
- Always use the latest version of firmware
- Require a passcode that's unique to that device.
- Use FaceID instead of passcode when possible (a thief can't snipe your passcode from a distance if you unlock your phone with FaceID)
- Set auto-lock to 30 seconds (lowest possible)
- Erase data upon excessive passcode failures note, this is complemented in a later step with daily backups. The odds of you putting in the wrong passcode 10 times is low, but in the event you do and you wipe the device by accident, you should be able to easily load in a back-up from the previous day)
- Turn off "Ask to Join Networks"
- Forget unused networks so that you don't rejoin automatically (airports, hotels, etc.)
Creating Backups
- Set iCloud backups to run automatically every night. This will allow you to load your entire phone as is (contacts, call history, iMessages, apps, even your wallpaper) onto another device during setup. The iCloud backup usually runs at 2am while I'm sleeping.
- You may need to pay for a higher tier in iCloud if you have too much stored on your phone. It's $3/month for 200gb of iCloud storage, and I find it worth it. Though I know some people with tens of thousands of photos for which 200gb might not be enough.
Password Policy
- For any accounts that may contain sensitive data (payments, PII, etc), always generate a unique password with 1Password. Don't reuse passwords. Same goes for PIN codes.
- For core accounts, create a strong but memorable password and then memorize it. The odds of getting locked out of 1Password are low if you're diligent, but for 2 or 3 core accounts (where you access money, your primary recovery email, your iCloud, 1Password), it's worth it to create strong, unique passwords for each core service and memorize them.
- I try not to reuse passwords in general, but I still sometimes am lazy and use one of my handful of typical passwords if there's no sensitive data collected by the service and it's a service I don't use often.
MFA
Set up MFA with everything. Add multiple options if possible. My preferred MFA options are as follows:
- One-time code that renews every 30 seconds. This is device agnostic and can be stored in 1Password. You could also use Microsoft Authenticator, Google Authenticator, Authy or similar, but there's just more overhead to now recover those accounts if your device becomes inaccessible.
- One-time code to recovery email.
- One-time code via SMS to my US phone number. On the pay-as-you-go Verizon plan, I only pay 5 cents per text message received. It's worth it to keep one consistent number.
- List of recovery codes (stored in 1Password as an attached txt file for the given account)
- Use another app for verification (Google does this a lot).
Lockdown your iCloud security
- Enable MFA.
- Create a strong, unique password.
- Remove any old or unused devices from the iCloud account (old phones, ipods, etc).
- Enable "Find My" for all of your devices.
- In Find My, configure all devices to send the last known location.
- In Find My, enable the configuration to remotely wipe a device.
In the event your phone is stolen, the idea is you could run back to any of your devices or even use a friend's device to log into iCloud on the web, go to Find My, and then in a single button click you can lock and wipe the stolen device. If the thief turned off the device or disabled wifi/cellular, then as soon as it comes back online it will be wiped.
Final Clean-Up
- Move any compromising photos to the "hidden" folder (which requires FaceID or passcode to unlock)
- Review the Files app for any documents containing sensitive info. If you need these documents to be accessible on mobile, then move them to 1Password and delete them from the Files app.
- Create a shortcut to trigger the lock screen (and thus require FaceID or passcode) when specific apps are opened (banking, email, photos, etc).
- Not sure if this is best practice, but I just keep everything in 1P and turn off apple keychain and the apple built-in password manager. I also don't save passwords in Chrome or Safari.
Extra tips
These aren't really iPhone tips but general tips. They are probably obvious to you if you aren't as scatterbrained as me, but I figured that I'd drop them here in case they help someone.
- Add thorough security measures to iCloud, primary email, and any banking or financial services. Review each account and make sure you have a strong, unique password as well as a unique PIN, MFA configured, login alerts, recovery codes, and an international, 24-hour toll-free phone number stored somewhere to contact the service in the event of a crisis. For banking services, add withdrawal limits, regional restrictions (if you bounce between the same few countries), and SMS notifications for charges over a certain threshold. Open up a second checking account with a separate debit card for trips to the ATM.
- Consolidate and close any unused bank accounts. I realized that on my phone I had Revolut, Venmo, Paypal, Nequi, plus 4 US banking institutions. I took this time to close my Discover account (which is pretty much useless outside the US anyway), close my Revolut account since I'm hardly ever in the UK/EU, and consolidate investment accounts from different institutions into just a handful that's easier to monitor.

2024.05.13 22:22 1DMod Sallie Winchester + The Little Mermaid in WAOLOM Eras Visuals
| I forgot how the west was won… How was the west won? With a shotgun…specifically, a Winchester rifle, Model 73, which is known as “The Gun that Won the West”. (yes, I am well aware the west was “won” via colonization, the massacre of indigenous peoples, the slaughter of animal/plant life, the enslavement of Africans, and the quasi-enslavement of Chinese and Asian peoples) I am going to take you on a journey that is long, meandering, and hopefully loosely braided together by the end. We will be discussing the following topics: The Winchesters, The Winchester Mystery House, Spiritualism, and The Little Mermaid. This is not a fully formed theory, but I do believe it will serve as a building block for other theories that come along. Full WAOLOM Intro Visuals Sarah Winchester: Widow, Heiress, Mad Woman Looking at the visuals for WAOLOM, I was struck by the similarities to the Winchester house and to the story of Sarah Winchester (Sarah Lockwood Pardee), known as Sallie. In 1862, Sallie married William Wirt Winchester, the heir to the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. In 1866, she gave birth to Annie, her daughter who died within a month of birth. Tragically, between the fall of 1880 and the spring of 1881, Sallie’s mother, father-in-law, and her husband died. In 1881, after her father-in-law and husband died within 3 months of one another, Sallie Winchester inherited the Winchester Repeating Arms Company. In 1884, one of Sallie’s sister died. In 1885, at the age of 46, Sallie moved to California from New Haven, CT. In 1886, Sallie purchased a 2-story farmhouse outside of San Jose, California. This house would come to be known as the Llanda Villa during Sallie’s lifetime and later it would be dubbed The Winchester Mystery House. Immediately upon moving in, Sallie began to remodel the home. In 1888, Sallie’s favourite niece, Marion “Daisy” Merriman, moved in with her. For the remainder of Sallie Winchester’s life, her home was under construction – from 1886-1922. At the age of 83, Sallie died on 7 September, 1922. Earliest know image The Winchester Mystery House https://preview.redd.it/raykrlf5490d1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0f5be2c55de6af4ab8f53912f0622561b92fd5f6 First house visual as Taylor ascends The story I am about to share has many iterations - some are factual, some are embellished, some are entirely fabricated. The recurring theme is that Sallie is presented as a Mad Woman, a savant, or just a woman ahead of her time in every iteration. As the story goes, Sallie was haunted by the tragedy her life had presented her with – a dead baby, an inability to have more children, and many familial deaths clustered together. After meeting with a Spiritualist, Sallie believed that she was cursed, hunted and haunted by the ghosts of those who had been murdered at the hands of Winchester legacy – the Winchester rifle, the gun that won the west. The Spiritualist (Adam Coons) informed Sallie that she needed to construct a house for the ghosts and that it must never be completed. By 1895, locals had begun to discuss the strange woman who was building a home that seemingly never seemed to cease construction. Rumours started that she believed she would die if she ceased construction on the home. Organ music could be heard late at night. There were rumours that she had parties for spirits with gold serving wear and that she used the bell tower to summon the spirits. While the rumours abounded, there were instances of her those close to her refuting them, saying that Sallie was a very sensible and stable woman – she played the organ when she had insomnia, the belltower was used for workers, and there was never any gold serving wear. The Winchester Mystery House is constructed of doors that go to nowhere, staircases that lead to nothing or end at a ceiling, doors that open to a deadly drop off, windows that go to nothing, trap doors in the floor, very shallow stairs, etc. These were rumoured to be traps for spirits, so they’d become confused and trapped, thus unable to haunt Sallie and her family. The counter to this is that the windows once went somewhere, but that they were closed off when the house was extended, that the shallow stairs were for Sallie’s declining health, etc. Was she a Mad Woman or an independent woman at a time when women weren’t allowed to be? https://preview.redd.it/o8u5fqh9490d1.jpg?width=1200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=e0bf97fd1e8261b43a6360032a19a35f32e7b17a https://preview.redd.it/ewdocth9490d1.jpg?width=900&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=15fa2de02d0cc6c11565c67be2d0d67bd42f8fc3 The Winchester 13 The Winchester Mystery House is known for the number 13 – 13 bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, 13 windows in certain rooms, etc. However, according to their website, most of these 13 related features were added after Sallie’s death. That said, the home is still deeply associated with the number 13. Links to Taylor What does all of this have to do with Taylor? I’m not entirely sure! But, I think there is a connection to her because of the imagery and the links to Mad Women, being trapped in houses with spirits haunting you, becoming a myth and a legend while still being alive and misunderstood. The name Sarah also stands out to me…Sarah was called Sallie, so it’s almost like an alter ego that you’ve forsaken, but will always be remembered as, is looking over your shoulder for the duration of your life and into the afterlife. ”Sarahs and Hannahs…” By the end of the visuals, the house has expanded significantly...similar to the Winchester Mansion WAOLOM Imagery I think there is something about the tour imagery where we zoom into the attic window (attics of our mind) and into the silhouette, only to emerge in what feels like that person’s mind/inner world…and then we are pulled out even further to see Taylor in all of her feminine rage (the musical). If she is a spirit trapped inside of the house of her mind, then is what we are seeing the manifestation of her inner thoughts/fears/desires or is the woman in the attic the authentic self that has been locked away and what we are seeing on stage at the Eras tour is the performative self that was forced to lock away the authentic self because she’s an unaccepted Mad Woman? https://reddit.com/link/1cr9du9/video/pelho5wl490d1/player https://reddit.com/link/1cr9du9/video/puf1rye24a0d1/player Taking these thoughts further, the WAOLOM imagery we see progresses even further and encompasses The Little Mermaid. It’s simultaneously showing us that one version of Taylor is The Little Mermaid and one version of Taylor is The Sea Witch – she is both victim and villain, hero and anti-hero. Taylor has both given up her voice and is also wielding it with ferocious power and magic. https://reddit.com/link/1cr9du9/video/58tkllek3a0d1/player I don’t know the show Supernatural well enough to make significant connections to this, but I do find worthy of note: - The entire trend of “Bi-Wife Energy” comes from the Supernatural fandom. It was about the actor who plays Castile, an Angel. The cute little song that went viral was created by a queer creator from that fandom.
- Dean and Castile were most likely gay and in love with one another, but were never allowed to be together because of how conservative the network (The CW) was. The actors have acknowledged this in retrospect.
- Sam and Dean Winchester
LWYMMD Music Video This is not the first time we have seen a Winchester Mystery House style of mansion. It is possible the WAOLOM imagery is a continuation of that story, in some way. A house full of spirits with the owner being a summoner? Taylor rising up? https://preview.redd.it/k4z8cvah6a0d1.jpg?width=1921&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=36b54872ce3587f1de718d4341219347b5a7a466 Flowers in the Attic It would also be remise to not mention the similarity of the figure and the house to the cover of Flowers in the Attic. I'm not sure what that means, although I lean towards the New Romantics/Mass Movement theory. Book and movie covers I hope this was entertaining and a somewhat worthwhile contribution to our little fandom! submitted by 1DMod to GaylorSwift [link] [comments] |
2024.05.13 22:05 ciaociaodisco Seeking advice: 25 year olds in VHCOL city
Hi all, long time lurker and first time poster from a throwaway as my main account has a lot of identifying information on it :) I hope this is the right place to post this.
TDLR: 1) I'd love feedback on my own finances right now to make sure I'm set up for success and 2) how to help my partner plan for a change in financial situation. Apologies in advance for the long post, but hoping I've shared most of the relevant info.
My own finances:
I (25F) live in a VHCOL and have been working for almost three years. My W2 TC is $122,000 (Salary $112,500 + $9500 bonus) and I anticipate that it will increase due a promotion to at least TC of $150,000, but I'm not counting these chickens before they hatch. I also have a side business (LLC) that brought in $40,000 last year, and I forecast will bring in a bit less this year (maybe around $30,000). Below is a breakdown of my savings and expenses:
Savings: TDLR: Maxing my 401K and Roth IRA. I keep $25,000 in a HYSA for emergencies. I'm not sure if I'm sitting on too much cash.
- 401K: Currently at $42,000. I haven't always been able to max it out, but always have done at least the company match + a little bit extra. Will max it out this year, so $23,000 + 6% company match ($6750).
- Roth IRA: Currently at $27,000. I max it out every year; I was using my own Roth IRA in Fidelity and had not realized that my company also provides a match for this, so I've stopped my own contributions to the Fidelity for now and am instead doing the 6% for the match. I know the limit for Roth IRAs generally is $7000 per year - I've already contributed $1940 toward this year's limit and plan to get the full match now. How does having two Roth IRAs work? I've tried to research it and am still very confused.
- Brokerage: $76,000, all in ETFs/index funds except for $5700 which I keep in SPAXX. Should I invest the $5700 instead of letting it sit in the MM?
- I auto transfer $800 per month into brokerage and if my checking account has too much in it, I'll toss a few thousand in.
- Primary HYSA: Emergency fund: $25,000 + Additional rainy day fund: $8,100 @ 5.5% APY
- Secondary HYSA: $1000 14% APY (14% only up to $1000, so once it's over $1000, I re-level it back to $1000 and move the money into my main HYSA)
- Checking account: $4400 to cover off credit card and rent. I use credit cards for everything, but treat them like debit cards. They are paid off every month and have never missed a payment.
- I don't have a HSA as I am still on my parents' insurance, but will move off of this onto my partner's starting next year, so may be able to open one after that move.
Monthly Expenses: Some of these are not costs incurred monthly (such as clothes and travel - we don't travel every month and I'm not buying clothes every month), but roughly how much it would be per month from the annualized amount. No debt: No student loans, CC debt, we rent and likely will for awhile, and do not have a car.
- Rent: $1250 (We split, this is my portion)
- Clothes: $500 (My main hobby and in the middle of a wardrobe refresh. A lot of this is deducted from my LLC as the business is event planning related)
- Restaurants: $500 (My main way of hanging out with friends and how my partner and I spend time together)
- Travel: $400
- Groceries: $250
- Entertainment: $250
- Self-care: $200
- Health: $170 (Gym + fitness classes)
- Commute/transport: $125 (pre-tax benefit)
- Utilities: $120
- Uber: $50
- Subscriptions: $25
I'd love to hear any feedback or advice you have for me: Am I sitting on too much cash/how much should I keep in my checking account? Am I right to continue to prioritize putting money in the brokerage over the HYSA? What should I keep doing and what should I do differently?
My partner's finances:
My partner (25M) has been a student until now and will be starting a potentially very lucrative career in October after graduating. We've been very fortunate that both of us do not have any student loans or debt and that his expenses have been taken care of by a mix of largely scholarships and family support, so he is essentially starting from scratch. His starting TC will be around $245,000 (Salary $225,000 + Bonus $20,000) with a salary ladder for increases each subsequent year after.
We'll continue living in the same place, so rent will be the same ($1250) and we spend around the same amount on groceries ($250). Besides that, the only other expense he has is transport (~$120/month) and the gym ($10/month). I cover utilities/subscriptions for us). His only other expense is travel, which is probably around $2500 annually, which his internships in school have covered for him).
I had him set up a Roth IRA last year that he maxed out in 2023, besides that he has modest savings (~$5000 in a general savings account that likely generates next to no interest). This is the plan that I've helped laid out for him after he starts:
- Build emergency fund: I'm thinking around $25,000 in HYSA?
- Max Roth IRA since he'll be starting in October and his salary will still be below the income threshold (Am I thinking about this correctly?)
- Max 401K
- Set up a brokerage account and start chucking money in there once we get a handle on what his expenses will look like once we've not living the student life.
Beyond that I'm really not sure that makes sense and could use advice.
Thank you for reading if you've made it this far, and really looking forward to hearing any advice you have!

2024.05.13 21:53 niairou How do I deal with feeling guilty at work?
Before I start ranting, I want to tell you the background first. I used to work at this target location and transferred to a different target location because I had some qualms about a team lead in my previous target location. I’ve already talked to HR about my concerns on this particular team lead but they would not do anything about it. Many people who worked in that specific target location also has reported about this TL because of how bad they are treated. They care more about how they appear, rather than their workers. I was tired of standing up for myself without result so I decided that maybe, transferring to a different target location would be better for me mentally.
I now work at a different location and thought it was getting better. There is a team member, I’ll call her Bk, and a Team Lead, I’ll call her Cl. Cl was a new team leader at this current target so I thought the environment would be great here and Bk is a regular team member, just like me, getting paid the same wage but acts like a team leader. I unknowingly gave Cl my phone number so I can talk about my availability. Mind you, when I transferred, so did my records of what my availability was.
On my off day(Tuesday), Cl called me. I was asleep during this time after I’ve been doing chores. I like to plan out my day off doing laundry, cooking, dishes, and deep cleaning. I was tired and was physically sleeping so how would I have known to pick up that phone call. It was my off day too, so I thought it wouldn’t matter right? No.
The next day, I come in for work and she berates me on not picking up that phone call. This was my second day in this new store so I’m newly hired. Cl questions my capabilities. She told me “since I’m a team lead, I would’ve definitely picked up that phone call, I don’t understand why you couldn’t do the same. I was calling you so that you can come in that day”. I calmly explained to her that I was sleeping and I do sincerely apologize for not picking up that phone call. She reiterates the fact that I should’ve picked up the phone call because she would’ve done the same.
It was my day off, I wasn’t scheduled so I assumed that it wasn’t going to be a big deal. My naive self felt defeated and I decided to talk about it to Bk because she seemed genuinely nice to me. Oh boy, that was a bad idea. I asked her, is it normal for managers to be calling us on our days off? Bk backs up Cl’s intentions as wanting us to make more money. After that day, I decided to stick by Cl’s words of, whatever I do, I hope she does the same back to me.
And after that day, Bk makes passive aggressive comments to me. Bk and Cl are two peas in a pod. Bk being Cl’s little sidekick. I made the biggest mistake confiding in Bk.
I prefer texting over phone calls because I can keep a record of what people say to me rather than phone calls. Due to past bad job experiences, I thought that I now know better. I was wrong. I don’t know how to handle passive aggressiveness and I still don’t know how to handle people guilt tripping me.
There were so many passive aggressive comments made by Bk after that day. I know very well what they sound like now because of my team lead in my previous target. One was about my insecurities. Sometimes I don’t wear makeup to work because I feel so demotivated and I know I have acne. She asked me “Do pimple patches work?”, on two separate occasions. The first time she asked I thought that she was genuinely curious. The second time she asked, I knew something was off because I never wore pimple patches that day. I realized that she was making passive aggressive comments about my face full of acne while she was pouting on about her one pimple on her forehead.
Another time she made a passive aggressive comment was when she asked if I would stay longer. I told her I was tired and as much as I would love to get some hours in, I really needed a de-stress from all the stress at work. She asked me “how am I going to make that bread if I’m tired?”. I don’t know why this comment especially made me feel bad but that day, I was so exhausted. I wanted to go home and be alone. That day was also Mother’s Day, so it was an especially long day. I’m not close with my mother and she kicked me out of the house so I felt especially lonely that day and just wanted to be home. I did not have any other excuse besides being tired. She just rolled her eyes at me. Mind you, we’re not close at all, I don’t think she considers me as her friend, I don’t consider her as my friend but she tried to pull it off as a joke.
Cl also asked me to stay longer. I assumed that she wanted me to stay longer to fix her mistake. Target workers who are reading this know to always change the capacities when filling the floor. When Cl back-stocked a plethora of graphic tees to the back, she did not change the capacities and unfortunately it had to be pulled back to the floor. She made the excuse of the system being weird.
I have made this same mistake at the previous target location so I know what actually happened, and I was berated by my team lead at the other target, so I did not want to make Cl feel bad knowing that I know it was her fault. Even though I know that it was her fault I did my best and not made her feel bad about it. I ended up working on fixing that mistake half of the day of that shift. She asked me to stay longer and I couldn’t because I was just so tired. I felt bad for not being able to stay longer. The next day she asked me to come in earlier than my supposed shift time. I came in earlier because I know she would make me feel guilty. I said no to staying longer yesterday so I decided to say yes to coming in early for today because I feel guilty.
I’m so tired of feeling depressed coming to work and feeling more depressed coming home. What should I do?

2024.05.13 18:30 Teerlys Thoughts and build with an Aberrant Mind Sorcerer from levels 1-13
I just recently finished Ghosts of Saltmarsh from 1-13 on a straight (no multi-class) Reborn Aberrant Mind Sorcerer and thought some might find my experiences useful when deciding on whether to play one or not. I'll toss my final spell list below as that's one of the more important things in differentiating sorcerers and other full casters from one another, but feel free to skip as I talk about the notable options below.
Cantrips: - Fire Bolt
- Minor Illusion
- Light
- Mage Hand
- Mind Sliver (Psionic)
- Prestidigitation
- Mending
Level 1 Spells: - Absorb Elements
- Mage Armor
- Shield
- Disguise Self (Shadow Touched)
- Dissonant Whispers (Psionic)
- Hex (Psionic)
Level 2 Spells: - Scorching Ray
- Web
- Invisibility (Shadow Touched)
- Tasha’s Mind Whip (Psionic)
- Suggestion (Psionic)
Level 3 Spells: - Fireball
- Fear
- Enemies Abound (Psionic)
- Sending (Psionic)
Level 4 Spells: - Dimension Door
- Polymorph
- Evard’s Black Tentacles (Psionic)
- Summon Aberration (Psionic)
Level 5 Spells: - Wall of Stone
- Synaptic Static
- Modify Memory (Psionic)
- Telekinesis (Psionic)
Level 6 Spells: Level 7 Spells: Metamagics: - Careful Spell
- Twinned Spell
- Heightened Spell
How it handled
The Good - Dissonant Whispers is crazy good. It's not great damage on its own, but using it to trigger opportunity attacks and saving allies from damage was clutch in a lot of occasions. It'll even get you out of a grapple which worked out for me a couple of times. I used it almost as often as Shield.
- Tasha's Mind Whip is situational, but that situation comes up a fair amount. It's an easyish to land spell that does ok damage, but can cost certain enemies a turn assuming your allies don't just run up to that particular enemy instead of targeting something else for the round. No, I'm not bitter that that happened repeatedly. Still, it's a good control/blast when you're concentrating on something else and Twinning it was something that happened often.
- Fireball almost feels like it's not worth mentioning, similar to how I won't go into just normally good spells like Web. I'm tossing it out here though because it sometimes gets a bad reputation from optimizers beyond level 8 or so where the damage impact drops off. What I'll say is that while the impact of a single Fireball does drop off, you do get a whole lot more spells slots to drop them with and multiple Fireballs stack up the damage fast. And you can make your allies auto succeed on saving throws. My Shield Master Fighter and Rogue got a lot of Fireballs dropped on their heads that they didn't even have to roll to save on thanks to Careful Spell.
- Dimension Door. OMG Dimension Door. This has officially entered my "If you can take Dimension Door, you take Dimension Door." status. The Warlock and I got into a really bad spot, completely surrounded by big enemies. I was low on initiative, but we survived long enough for my turn to come around and then... everything was just fine. The final fight I popped 3 Dimension Doors that allowed the Druid and I to catch the escaping underwater big bad, get myself eaten by them, retrieve the exploded remains of our digested Warlock from inside of it, and Dimension door back out with an armful of his guts so that we could resurrect him. Our Sun Beaming Giant Octopus Druid caught him because he took the time to eat me and was able to finish him off.
- Evard's Black Tentacles came up a few times, and with that encounter that Dimension Door got the Warlock and I out of a bad situation, I was able to turn around and drop that on the horde of enemies coming back at us. The auto damage adds up over time, the restrained condition is amazing, and it got us through what would otherwise have been a really bad fight as one player didn't show and 2 PC's got chain stunned. It does damage, it locks down enemies, it makes them easier to hit, and makes them have a hard time hitting you. Especially in tighter quarters this was a game changer.
- Summon Aberration was the go-to I-just-need-to-deal-damage-over-multiple-encounters spell. Lasts an hour, can do range, and upcasts amazingly well. A must have.
- Telekinesis was one I almost got rid of when I was mapping out my spell list initially. I am crazy glad I didn't. The key thing is that it's not a Saving Throw for the enemies. It's an ability check. That means that legendary resistances don't mean squat. In one fight against two major bad things, I basically force choked one to the ceiling where it couldn't do anything while the rest of the team worked down the first, then they just ranged down the one that couldn't escape my mind grapple. In the final fight I held one of the big bads stationary inside of a Blade Barrier, and a big part of why the remaining bads ran was because once my turn came again I was going to mentally grapple them and do the same. This is a really big answer to the question of how to deal with Legendary Resistances.
The Mid - Fear + Careful Spell is really good... when the opportunity comes up. When it did it changed combats and even straight up ended an encounter with 10 corrupt guards who all failed the saving throw. I was surprised to note that the opportunities weren't as many as you'd think. Having enemies run away isn't always the best thing for you, even if you can freely cast it over your allies. Many times Concentration was used on something else which was just better or more flexible for the situation. I was still glad to have it in my pocket though.
- Enemies Abound, Twin Cast, was awesome when it came up. It's most useful when there are 4-5 biggish enemies in a good enough position to where the two you target will most likely attack the others. Being able to turn 2 against the others is a tide turner that you need Twinned Spell to accomplish. The mid part is that that perfect situation doesn't come up as often as I'd thought it might. It was huge and memorable when it did, and I'd take it again, but I didn't get to use it as much as I'd have thought. I could see it coming up more actually in a campaign that was a little more Role Play heavy.
- Wall of Stone oddly never really came up as the go-to move to separate enemies. Instead I used it to bury a portal to hell under a 5' thick slab of stone and halted the retreat of a bad guy. So utility wise it was amazing as we didn't otherwise have answers to those problems. It was just that the normal use case scenarios didn't really come up or I had better options. Would still absolutely take it again, maybe even over a Force Wall as the utility of being able to make it permanent was clutch.
- Disintegrate I got late so I didn't have a ton of opportunities to use it, but as a Sorcerer I had two things over anyone else using this. In the fight where I force choked one of two big bads to the ceiling, I'd first gone in heavy and Twin Cast Disintegrate on both of them hitting for over 70 damage which was major in that fight. I also had the ability to impose disadvantage on a check against a single target. Lastly, just knowing I had the ability to obliterate a 10' cube (or 20' with Twin) of anything was a comfort even though the situation didn't come up. I originally just looked at it as a damage spell, but having that destructive utility was really nice.
The Disappointing - Hex + Scorching Ray was supposed to be my big boss nova option. Takes a round to set up, but upcasting Scorching Ray for 3d6 extra damage per upcast seemed like a solid option. Unfortunately chunks of the campaign were underwater where fire wasn't great, and when bosses did show up my concentration was generally tied up on other options and they didn't have enough health that it was worth transitioning over to this combo. The couple of times I tried it I missed on some bolts so it wasn't as impactful as I'd hoped. I never really got to showcase this and it took 2 spells selections and would cost a round. I might try it again in a campaign where water didn't make it a bad option, but I could easily see myself looking for a different damage option too.
- I had such dreams around Modify Memory on this build. Free Subtle spell by casting with sorcery points instead of a spell slot, then Heightened Spell to impose disadvantage on the saving throw. Sadly, by the time I got it, the opportunity just never came up. I still think it has amazing potential behind it, but my DM for this campaign is more RP light.
Thoughts on the subclass
I like to spread myself out to experience different subclasses, but Aberrant Mind is one I'd absolutely try to play again, especially in a more RP heavy campaign (ideally in one without so much underwater and psychic resistance). It's just that good. It's got a lot of solid options that can be used creatively in different ways, and a good enough mix of Concentration and non-Concentration spells with some that last a good while that I'd run low but not be out of spell slots at the end of most adventuring days which is a good balance to hit.
With regard to the Metamagic/Sorcery points... I picked my metamagics carefully based around the spell selections I was planning on. Careful Spell, even though it didn't stop all damage, was still useful. It made dropping Fireballs and Synaptic Static on the party a solution worth entertaining and highly valuable in a lot of circumstances. For Fear it made the spell usable in a lot of extra situations. Twin Spell is every bit as good as it looks on the tin. Twinning Dissonant Whispers for 1 sorcery point is massive value.
Being able to trade in sorcery points for spells kept me able to keep the cost of casting Shield reasonable, and in the late game I was getting back high level spells when they were most important (triple Dimension Dooring in one fight). Being able to cast some spells for straight sorcery points as a subclass feature got used a lot and was a great savings on both sorcery points and spell slots. It also let me subtle cast psionic spells for free
as well as adding another metamagic into them. It helped that I had a Bloodwell Vial to get 5 points back on a short rest.
I'll say that coming from classes that were more specialized in single target damage (or could at least do well with it), I did at times feel the lack of it here. Hex + Scorching Ray were supposed to fill that requirement but it just didn't play out like I'd hoped. I had moments of it, like twinning (and landing) Disintegrate, and the Summon Aberration spell eventually helped, but I wasn't ever really even in competition for star of the show for single target damage and that was new for me. All of the utility, control, and AoE blasting made up for it though.
My one real complaint is how stingy the game is with Metamagics. Going through most of the game with just 2, fun as they were, felt very meh. I had to choose the absolute top options for my spell list, which meant that more niche options were never in real consideration. Being able to Transmute my spells or hit them with Distant metamagic on occasion would have felt great, still used my resources, and not broken the game. Sorcerers should definitely get 2 more at level 6 or 7, then 2 instead of 1 at level 10 to really make them masters of their magic.
Finally, I'll say that while other classes excelled in combats that were chained back to back or more medium encounters, I really felt that this build shined the most when things were at their worst. I had answers to problems that no one else did and creative use of those solutions kept us from TPKs and even rescued (the dead body of) one of our teammates who otherwise would have lost their character at the apex of the campaign. I may not have always been the highest DPR contributor of a fight (although I did hit that mark on occasion), but I pulled asses out of bad situations regularly and changed how a lot of fights played out.

2024.05.13 18:28 OSXAdam Candidate Actions -> Send Message + Opt-In/Out Requirement? (Email Confirmations)
Hey All,
I'm quite new to Workday Recruiting and am looking for some information regarding some features that I don't currently have access to.
Recently, I've found that we may be able to create Candidate Interview Confirmation Templates within Workday which, whilst we'd have to populate the specific details, would be much better than our current method. One of the challenges with this though, is that when sending an message to a candidate this way, they are first receiving an Opt-In/Opt-Out email where they have to click a link and select if they want to keep receiving communications via Workday from us or not.
As such, I've got a few questions;
- Is there indeed a way to create Interview Confirmation Templates within Workday that could include branding and images etc?
- If so, is there a way to auto-populate the interview information, e.g. date, time, interviewer(s), focus areas etc?
- Is the Opt-In/Opt-Out email requirement mandatory or can this be turned off in settings somewhere? Reason I ask, is a friend recently started at another company and they mentioned that all of their communications came via Workday during the interview process and they never had to opt-in to receive those emails.
Thank you so much in advance!

Dear California State Leaders,
I write to you today as a voter, taxpayer, constituent, and as a State of California employee. My ________years of dedicated work serves Californians every day because my role focuses on supporting _________.
I want to share
my personal story and provide some facts and data about the
Governor’s new June 17 RTO (Return to Office) arbitrary mandate. This mandate
will cost taxpayers more during this budget deficit crisis and it is a poorly thought-out, one-size-fits-all, chaotic approach. According to the
survey data from 110 State Departments, telework was a huge success for recruitment, productivity, morale, collaboration, and decreasing office space. This chaotic, mandatory, arbitrary
RTO simply creates a long list of unnecessary problems. For all of the reasons outlined in this email, I strongly support
Assemblyman Josh Hoover’s audit request. My message is simple: Encourage the Governor to rescind the June 17 arbitrary RTO mandate. The decision for the frequency that employees should all meet in-person and collaborate should rest with those closest and most familiar with the work: individual Unit Managers. These managers know the true collaboration, mentorship, and operational needs of their individual teams. Individual Unit Managers should be allowed to make decisions on accordingly to carry out the Department’s goals and mission. This is the bottoms-up approach that balances the needs of both the employer and employees. The Governor’s mandate and top-down approach fails to acknowledge the
many financial and environmental repercussions to not only its own employees, but also to the State of California. I want to share my personal story as a working class, public servant.
With high inflation, I simply cannot afford to shoulder the cost of commuting, which averages $8,466 annually.. According to this
2023 LAO (Legislative Analyst Office) report, for most employees, our State provided wages have consistently been lower than the inflation rate, year-after-year, since 1999, constantly eroding our purchasing power. Other employees have it worse, such as scientists who have had their salaries be frozen for 4 years since 2020
as CalHR has refused to budge on reaching a contract. Purchasing power is a key metric since a $50,000 salary in 2024 buys far less than in 1999.
This 2023 UC Berkeley Labor Center report confirmed that “State workers struggle to make ends meet throughout California.” Even the
2023 California State Auditor reports “that hiring and retaining qualified IT staff is the greatest challenge that they [State Departments] currently face.”
If the State is unwilling to provide market wages that keep up with inflation, the state can recruit and retain employees by improving working conditions, such as telework. Being allowed to telework 5 days a week has helped stretch my limited dollars, especially in this inflationary period.
This arbitrary RTO mandate is effectively yet another pay cut for me that I simply cannot afford. Personally, having the opportunity to telework 5 days a week has dramatically improved my quality of life by:
############################################################# Tell them why the RTO issue is important to you, your family member and your community. IF YOU DISCUSS CHILD CARE, ONLY TALK ABOUT THE HOURS BEFORE AND AFTER WORK. DO NOT DISCUSS CHILD CARE DURING YOUR REGULAR 8-5 JOB. ########################################################### - I have saved ____ hours on my roundtrip commute per week. This has allowed me to reinvest that time toward _____. [helping my kids with their homework, taking care of elderly relatives ]
- I have saved $___ on commuting costs, which has helped me better afford ___ for me and my family. This has been especially helpful because high inflation has negatively affected me by _____.
- By teleworking, I am reducing my environmental impact and contribution to climate change, which is _____
- I have a physical disability and telework is more accommodating than using public transportation, etc. (Feel free to expand on it)
- I do not live in an area with access to efficient public transportation, so teleworking helps by _____
- For childcare during before and after work hours, it would cost me ________.
The State will incur many financial and environmental costs: - If even 33%, or 73,086 out of the 221,474 State employees use the monthly maximum IRS public transportation benefit,) that would cost the State $276.3 million every single year.
- State Departments already spend $600 million per year on rent. Many State Departments also simply do not have enough office space for all of their employees currently. There is nowhere near enough quiet conference room space for employees to hold confidential meetings with stakeholders. Will these departments sign new leases for office space?
- State Departments will be forced to buy many millions of dollars worth of additional office equipment for employees to effectively carry out their jobs including additional webcams, headsets, keyboards, standard office supplies, etc.
- Pursuant to the reasonable accommodation process for employees with verified medical needs, State Departments will need to purchase other expensive equipment, including but not limited to specialized chairs and stand up desks.
- It is important to note that many employees have already invested their own money into equipping their own home office that best meets their needs. It is not simply not possible to ask an employee to bring in their own large equipment from home to the office and back, so the State Departments would incur these additional purchases.
- State Departments will be spending much more in maintenance costs for elevators, bathroom repairs, printer repairs, electricity, water, gas, and other utilities.
- State telework has also eliminated nearly 400,000 metric tons of carbon emissions. Mandating RTO will needlessly cause more carbon emissions, which directly runs counter to the Governor’s own words for his trip to the Vatican: “global temperatures [are] hurtling towards alarming new heights, the stakes could not be higher. There is no greater authority than moral authority — and the Pope’s leadership on the climate crisis inspires us all to push further and faster.”
The arbitrary mandatory RTO causes chaos among State Departments: Across various departments, it’s common knowledge that a sizable number of executive-level leaders do not reside near Sacramento and instead live in other regions in California, such as the Bay Area and Southern California.
- The next logical question is, will the state offer these executive-level leaders special exemptions and privileges not available to rank and file staff and risk the hypocrisy that undermines the Governor’s stated policy for more “collaboration?” This creates another “rules for thee, but not for me” situation.
- Or will the State risk losing these executive-level leaders en masse across numerous departments, undermining policy and program implementation?
- For Departments considering exempting those who live over 50 miles away, it also destroys employee morale. For example, a 20 year veteran staff member with technical expertise may be forced to commute and come into the office twice a week to train a newer employee over Microsoft Teams or Zoom simply because they live in Los Angeles. This naturally breeds frustration and resentment.
- For exempted employees who live over 50 miles away, some Departments are creating policies that their 5 day remote status only applies to their currently held position, so these employees are “forever stuck” and cannot promote upward, even if they have the expertise the Department needs.
- The State is starting to open itself up to lawsuits as some Departments are already denying reasonable accommodations for people with disabilities.
- Being able to recruit employees from areas other than Sacramento helps ensure Departments get perspectives from different counties all across the State. People from rural, suburban, and urban areas all have different experiences and to best serve ALL Californians, we need a geographically diverse workforce.
- As previously stated, many Departments already do not have the office space or needed equipment for all of their employees. With RTO, new equipment will be needed and purchasing equipment notoriously takes a long time. These factors, combined with many departments trying to implement a hoteling system, will ultimately result in a extremely chaotic return-to-the-office and tank productivity. Many Departments have held Q&A sessions and time and time again, HR offices have been unable to answer basic questions about RTO logistics.
Some state employees have discussed that this is their number one quality-of-life issue and may galvanize them to start engaging with media contacts and spread the hypocrisy on social media. Their goal is to highlight the glaring mismatch and hypocrisy between CA’s proud public policies and the actual reality of choices being made by this Administration. Quite frankly,
I fear that this may hurt the Governor and other State Leaders in the future. By unilaterally imposing an arbitrary RTO mandate across the board, the Administration is actively choosing to make working class public servant’s lives worse off, so I understand my colleague’s sentiments.
As
MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow recently stated to her own bosses, “Hearing legitimate criticism, responding to it and correcting course. Not digging in, not blaming others. Take a minute, acknowledge that maybe it wasn’t the right call.
It is a sign of strength, not weakness, to acknowledge when you are wrong.” To reiterate, my request is simple: Encourage the Governor to rescind the arbitrary, mandatory, one-size-fits-all, chaotic RTO mandate. Allow individual Unit Managers the flexibility to enact telework policies that best meet their team’s needs to effectively carry out the Department’s mission. They are the ones closest to the work and the ones most knowledgable about what the team needs to succeed.
I respectfully request a response within ten business days. Respectfully yours,

2024.05.13 18:12 Strider755 From a labor perspective, how do you feel about the Parable of the Vineyard Workers in the Bible?
In all four gospels in the New Testament, Jesus often speaks in parables. This one, in the Gospel of Matthew, is no exception:
“For the kingdom of heaven is like a householder who went out early in the morning to hire laborers for his vineyard. After agreeing with the laborers for a denarius a day, he sent them into his vineyard. And going out about the third hour he saw others standing idle in the market place; and to them he said, ‘You go into the vineyard too, and whatever is right I will give you.’ So they went. Going out again about the sixth hour and the ninth hour, he did the same. And about the eleventh hour he went out and found others standing; and he said to them, ‘Why do you stand here idle all day?’ They said to him, ‘Because no one has hired us.’ He said to them, ‘You go into the vineyard too.’ And when evening came, the owner of the vineyard said to his steward, ‘Call the laborers and pay them their wages, beginning with the last, up to the first.’ And when those hired about the eleventh hour came, each of them received a denarius. Now when the first came, they thought they would receive more; but each of them also received a denarius. And on receiving it they grumbled at the householder, saying, ‘These last worked only one hour, and you have made them equal to us who have borne the burden of the day and the scorching heat.’ But he replied to one of them, ‘Friend, I am doing you no wrong; did you not agree with me for a denarius? Take what belongs to you, and go; I choose to give to this last as I give to you. Am I not allowed to do what I choose with what belongs to me? Or do you begrudge my generosity?’ So the last will be first, and the first last.”
The basic lesson of the parable, from a religious perspective, is that those who convert later in life (even a murderer who repents on his deathbed, for example) will be just as worthy of salvation as those who were righteous their whole lives.
Disregarding the religious nature of this parable, how do you feel about the workers' perspective in this parable? Were the workers right to grumble, or was the householder in the right? The priest at my church noted in his homily that these were day laborers (not unlike the 'Latinos at Home Depot' cliche) who were hired on a daily basis and did not have steady employment. If they didn't get hired for the day, their family would not eat. Therefore, the householder is paying all of the workers a "living wage" (a denarius was a good day's wages; most day laborers made less) regardless of whether they were hired early or late in the day. Is that argument an example of "equality" vs "equity"? Who do you think is right?
