Hi! I main Volt Prime, my build is as follows: Growing Power, Power Drift, Primed Continuity, Narrow Minded, Primed Flow, Transient Fortitude, Archon Stretch, Augur Reach, Capacitance, Rolling Guard + Arcane Energize & Molt Augmented.
My main weapons so far are: Latron Prime + Incarnon, Zylok Prime and Glaive Prime, I won't mention the weapon mods as I don't think I need to, the frame and companion mods are more important in this case as I'm looking for a new weapon.
My companion is Wyrm Prime modded with: Assault Mode, Negate, Guardian, Crowd Dispersion, Reinforced Bond, Tenacious Bond, Vacuum, Primed Animal Instinct, Calculated Redirection and Primed Regen.
The Vulklok sentinel weapon which has: Thermite Rounds, Malignant Force, Rime Rounds, Rifle Aptitude, Vigilante Fervor, Vigilante Offense, Point Strike, Vital Sense.
Now you pretty much know my build from top to bottom I'd like to find a new weapon to change things up a bit as I'm getting a little tired of the Latron Prime Incarnon, I specced my new Vulklok for fire rate as I'd like to find a weapon with high fire rate to benefit, maybe an AR or an automatic shotgun?
Looking at the Phenmor, Gotva Prime and Cedo right now, what would you choose and which would benefit more from Volt's Electric Shield and Reinforced Bond or would you pick another weapon, if so why would you choose it? :)

My Journey with Destiny
Growing up, I owned the original Xbox, and among the great many phenomenal games on that console, one stood out from the pack: Halo. Blowing up alien fanatics with the rocket launcher, exploring a strange new universe filled with intrigue and secrets and especially having a fun time bonding with my friends and family over split-screen co-op play - Younger Me was infatuated from the beginning.
So when Halo's developer, Bungie, announces that it's leaving Microsoft behind to start its own, brand new IP, I'm excited beyond words. It's called Destiny, and it's a weird, FPS-MMO-RPG hybrid with a myriad of planets of to explore, enemies to fight and social spaces to engage in. Younger Me already knows: this is going to be the greatest video game ever made.
Then Destiny comes out, and I hate it. The story is nonsensical. You need an app just to understand what is happening or who everyone is, and I didn't have a smartphone at the time either. You're given vague slices of exposition during the loading screens to kinda sorta tell you what to do but it still doesn't make any sense. The PvP is just a bunch of Hunters with shotguns blinking their way around the map so they can oneshot you with very little real counterplay. The "classes" are barely distinguishable from each other, they all play the exact same way just with a different super ability.
My dislike for the first Destiny stopped me from trying Destiny 2 for many years, even when the game went free-to-play. All the negative press the game has received since certainly did nothing to change my mind on the matter.
Why Destiny 2 is Different
It wasn't until a few months ago when every Destiny 2 expansion went on sale on Humble Bundle that I decided to give it a try, and to my great surprise... I loved it. It was everything I could have hoped for. Destiny 2 has a story (many stories, in fact). I don't need an app to explain things to me. Destiny 2 has characters that develop and grow (and that I can remember the name of). Destiny 2 actually cares about making the classes feel unique and this time around they have distinct builds that separate them from each other. Destiny 2 has a plethora of content (even considering some of it was vaulted years ago). In many ways, Destiny 2 is the game I'd been dreaming of all the way back in 2013 before the first game released.
The Final Shape's Importance
And so now I ask for the latest adventure in the Destiny universe: The Final Shape. This expansion is the finale to the story that began with Destiny 1, a decade ago. The Witness, the architect behind every villainous plot, catastrophic event and hardship humanity has experienced since before the events of Destiny 1, has returned, and it is up to us, Guardians, to enter the Traveler, the source of our powers, to find and defeat them once and for all.
This is the Final Boss of Destiny. The minotaur at the end of the labyrinth. I have fallen in love with a franchise that once shocked me with its mediocrity and now I want to complete that love by bringing an end to its central conflict once and for all.
As a familiar voice might've put it, I want to finish this fight.

UPDATE: I ordered a VFC M249 I found for sale. I am getting back into airsoft after a 15-20 year break and looking to get my first GBBR. It seems like all roads lead to VFC or Tokyo Marui and I need help deciding. From what I gather the VFC’s are better made and more closely represent real steal but the TM’s are more standardized. Disclaimer: I've only done this on multiple iPhones, I don't have experience with SB/MP tracking on Androids.
You can just deposit $10 and get paid ~$30 for an easy $20 profit and leave it there but there's no reason to not play on and earn more if you have the time. The game I used seems like it was made to 'game' this offer.

6. Start the game and pick just 1 square and then cash out. As long as the square turns green you're good and that will count as +1 win on your account. You should win 1 cent. I'll play 2-3 squares here and there to recoup some lost money but don't make it a habit. Take your 1 square wins to reach that 200 win total.

The game will sometimes automatically screw you and make you lose on your 1st try in consecutive games if you go on a hot streak of winning - all of these games are rigged a bit. If I lose on my 1st try I usually will play 3-4 squares in the follow-up game to make up for the prior instant-lost, but that's up to you.
Repeat this for as long as you want. I was able to easily hit 200 win in 2 days - 1st day I played on and off for 4 hours while on the computewatching TV and the 2nd day I hit 200+ in a few hours. My fellow gamers, for too long has our community suffered the indignation of an intolerable culture that has denigrated, besmirched, exploited, and has outright demonized our culture of unique individuals with a genuine love of a hobby that they see as profitable and progressive. But the truth of the matter is they were never really looking to be a part of our community, they simply wanted to use our community as a tool of activism and propaganda in the entertainment industry as it was extremely profitable, and they wanted inclusion in that division. Ever since GamerGate & Female Frequency, we have had to endure the incursion of forced ideologies, xenophobic behaviors and inferior overpriced products that have never been in our best interest and have been flat out disgraceful towards foreign media.
Before Gaming had become a major source of entertainment, we were often categorized as anti-social or societies rejects where because we found more enjoyment in playing fictional characters and not spending as much time out and about, we never fully assimilated in society (which is a good thing if you ask me). From 1998 to 2007, at the height of innovation, creativity and production, Gaming had reached a golden age in which it had revolutionized society. Hollywood Execs who had ruined the movie industry turned their attention to video games as a source of income since video games had outperformed movies in terms of profit. No one was concerned about gaming, much less diversity or inclusivity until it became profitable. This makes people like SBI look extremely disingenuous as they were not interested in gamers as a community with its own culture. They simply wanted to use it as another weapon in identity politics.
Microtransactions; the hidden enemy to gamer progress and inducer to mental laziness of our community. Microtransactions have been around for a long time; however, it has never been more potent and apparent than in recent years. It has aided in the dismantling and segregation of players on the ideology of FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) and has created another sub-culture of gamers who have no real drive to be better outside of how much money they put into the game. This has degraded our culture as well as we have become “fat” off transactional gaming but at the same time we have been “starved” of purposeful gaming where our achievements were our sustenance. I am not saying that microtransactions are bad, but when they are exploitative and predatorial like they have been and don’t give gamers room to grow, we become lethargic and unwilling to improve ourselves as gamers. Oversaturated microtransactional games are one of the many reasons why we have become complacent and unwilling to fight against the exploitative tactics used by big brand game companies such EA, Ubisoft, ActivisionBlizzard, NaughtyDog and so many other western business model companies. Western style games were not like this in the past, they had much more depth and actual effort put into them with the gamer in mind. This has not been the case for over a decade and our connection to western developers has been whittled down to just being transactional. That is one of the reasons why you see so many remasters and remakes in today’s gamer community. They have lost their willingness to improve as developers of games and simply accept corporate/share holder rules.
Game journalists also do not have any real integrity or purpose outside of being funded for their involvement in promoting IPG (Identity Political Games) in a positive light to the public whether it’s positively received or not. They are not interested in what we have to say, they all support the same agenda and that is why they are a dying breed. Within the next couple of years, they will be out of the job and more than likely they will not be able to stay in the industry giving how they have responded to past articles that have clearly been scripted on the premise of diversity and racism. Not only that, but most of them are also extremely hostile to the community as they stereotype and defame the individuals that are a part of the community they are supposed to serve. We have been mentally liberated from their lies and coercive tactics as we tend to laugh at their obvious attempt at virtue signaling while hiding their misdoings so that they can play the victim.
My gamer brothers & sisters, I would not suggest the following action that we must take now without good cause. I have weighed our options and the best option for us now is this…...CULTURAL SECESSION. Naturally this is a form of segregation where they would more than likely claim they are being segregated by the dominant culture of the gaming community but that is incorrect. For years now we have been the ones who are often marginalized and ostracized for the smaller portion of our community. And when we aren’t, we’re exploited for more funds so that these companies can stay in business only to subject us to low quality products that coincide with the “WOKE Agenda” that are often huge expenses to these big brands i.e. AAA/AAAA games that will eventually flop for its obvious forced diversity and bug infested product which will undoubtedly piss off the consumer to the point of wanting a refund. Losing copious amounts of capital and stock in the process, not to mention their reputation is permanently marred.
We must separate on every cultural level in terms of entertainment and ideology. We must reject everything from the west that promotes toxic western beliefs, practices, and exclusion from other cultures (i.e. Southeastern Countries such as Japan and Korea). Japan & Korea have been the targets of unjust discrimination from Western Developers, Western Journalists, Western Localizers (The Wokelizers) and Western Society Prejudice regarding their sense of aesthetics as Westerners hate the aesthetic sense of these countries. The reason why they resort to such base tactics isn’t just because it weaponizes the ideal female form but it’s also because they have deep-seated insecurities about their own looks so when they see attractive female characters, they use terms such as “unrealistic” or “hypersexualized” to establish the moral high ground. But the truth is, they want to feel superior to that which is ideal, so they insult and dehumanize this figure that portrays natural female beauty because they see it as an insult to their own social superiority in what they believe is a hierarchy of them being at the top of all other women. Because of this and so many contributing factors, their movies flop harder than the Fat Chocobo landing on a group of enemies and their games seismically fail just as much if not more. We must sever our connection to Western Developers, Publishers, and ALL Western-Centric Entertainment for they seek to mentally enslave us to their Xenophobic ideology.
Let’s define Western Culture and its traits. Western Culture/Society is composed of more than several different ideologies that work in unison with one another to facilitate dominance over multiple aspects of society. Business, Social, Political, Technological, and sometimes even Global Affairs are affected by these ideologies that portray a specific mindset of Western beliefs. What are those ideologies you ask?

• Perpetual Victimhood: By weaponizing the fact that they are marginalized and of a small portion of western society, they can push their agenda to absurd standards that ultimately ostracize the main demographic. And when companies don’t capitulate, they are labeled as anti-progressive/misogynist’s or cohorts of White Supremacy. They use this to cancel their targets and silence them through societal defamation to keep the public on their side. • Societal Terrorism: This is another form of ideology weaponization that they use in order to make companies “toe-the-line” with their agenda. By weaponizing cancel culture, they exert dominance over these companies but in exchange they also reimburse those companies with DEI & ESG funds that raise their credit score as well as having social status with the marginalized demographic. However; cancel culture has not succeeded in years and developers and publishers probably only want the money and the DEI ESG rating. They often look down upon gamers who are not in the industry to hide their obvious lack of knowledge on game development thinking that their job title grants them special status that they believe gives them the right to be condescending. • Double-standard Enforcement: By labeling something as “unrealistic” or “hypersexualized”, they can claim this is morally wrong if it promotes traditional dynamics between men and women. Heterosexual relationships are condemned while at the same time Same-sex relationships are praised. Additionally, heterosexual relationships with main white male characters turn antagonistic and spotlight stealing. This is deliberate as to promote the “Girl Boss” ideology to indoctrinate women into the Feminazi state of mind. While at the same time, should a male character also adopt the “I don’t need male/female” ideology its seen as Toxic Masculinity which isn’t even a real thing. • Dehumanization/Demonization: This is something that most military branches use in order to remove conscious inhibitions such as mass slaughter is wrong or categorization. By enforcing ideologies to denounce humanity in certain targets, it deactivates your conscience by saying this is not human therefore its ethically okay to treat this target without compassion and deny the fact it has sentience. We gamers fall under this category for journalists, developers, companies and society at large. This is a tactic we are familiar with to an extent as it implies that we are not normal when we do not do what everybody else is doing. “Geeks are the worse” or “Nerds need to fall into a pit of lava” are verbal dehumanization forms that most people in society say and we as Gamers tend to be relegated to those categories. This is their way of imposing the social hierarchy on us by establishing superiority. We know this as Gamers as we see it very often in the games that we play and some times experience it in real life.

• Deflection/Projection: This is basic psychology 101. By redirecting the conversation away from their mistakes and back on to the opposing view to avert blame and justify their innocence they can avoid criticism. However; deflection is a CONSCIOUS decision, meaning they have no real argument to justify their incompetence. If you can consciously process the situation, you have self-agency which means you don’t have a legitimate excuse. Projection is something else entirely. Most times, Projection doesn’t work on conscious decisions rather it is automatically deployed when feeling threatened, anxious or both. Instead of accepting accountability for feelings or actions that are deemed socially unacceptable they accuse others of committing that unacceptable behavior thereby exonerating themselves and proving that those feelings and/or actions are not their own.

These traits are so nefarious and unconscionable that I have a hard time believing that anyone could harbor them. However, given the social, political, and economic climate that we are in, those in power who use their influence on controlling society most definitely possess these insidious traits. The government recently announced its intentions towards what they believe is “GamerGate 2.0” and now even the ADL has made an official appearance, referring to gamers as “extremist’s”. We know EXACTLY what they are doing, and they aren’t even trying to hide it anymore because they don’t think we are aware of their motives. This is just a pretext for them to exert even more control and we know why, it’s because they want the influence we as a community have to must serve them. So here is what we do my fellow gamers-

I come to you in an effort to (possibly) fix the near constant crashing of my NV.
It crashes around 30-40 minutes playing OR in specific areas wich I cannot go through, i.e. McCarran interior around Col. Hsu, The Mojave Outpost interior around Maj. Knight and Ranger Jackson.
I am aware that certain mods should be a no-go together like New California and TTW, for instance. My intention with adding specifically New California was cause I wanted a few specific armors and such.
Looking for any specific help or general directions and knowledge in this area.
PS: have lots of crash logs.

After the RPC/NPCs I am now looking at Vanilla gameplay and game balance. While there are much more ambitious mods out there, I'd still like to share my own little weapon balancing/gameplay mod. The core of the mod is provide more optons, more tactical choices. Vanilla is very rigid in what you can do with a particular class of guns. My More Tactical Options Mod increases the meaningful combat choices we can make with almost any type of gun (restrictions may apply). A second aspect is to make some guns that are too close to each other in the game more distinct. A third aspect is to add some stuff that should have been in the base game (such as certain calibres) and a few QoL improvements.

Basic changes: Burst Fire damage is no longer crippled. Instead, there is a chance to hit penalty for subsequent shots. This makes burst fire more attractive for good shooters. Autofire is rebalanced: Damage is no longer crippled, but less shots are fired and there is now a chance to hit drop-off. As a result, autofire is more dangerous now, but wastes less ammo. Pin down and mobile shot is allowed for more guns. Small icnrease to gun, ammo and grenade drop rates
Weapon-related changes: Machine guns are now more distinct from each other. Overwatch is possible, and some machine guns will use autofire during overwatch. This speeds up MG gameplay considerably. Assault rifles and battle rifles are more distinct from each other. Run-and-Gun is now allowed for intermediate cartridge guns. Submachineguns are now more distinct from one another. Item changes Added 5.45wp, 7.62x54r and 8mm Mauser Ammo and changed various loot definitions for players to find such ammo in the early game. They can also buy it at BR and craft it
some QoL stuff Made some gun modifications easier and modification failures less scathing.
I tested these changes for quite a long time and it feels very good playing that way. Other mods may have have done similar things and added tons of other stuff as well, but for whoever doesn't want more guns, but a more varied gameplay with the vanilla ones, this may be a good alternative.

Hello guys, Im a moderator in this sub and I port mods fairly regularly for the XBox crowd. I created a mod focusing on realism and I wanted to share it with you as well. I like to use it with some mods that you guys unfortunately dont have for the full experience, but you still can use without them. It's almost done, but will receive pontual updates from time to time.
Bethesda.net Realistic Fallout 2.0. - Immersive Edition [PS] Mod
RECCOMENDED PLACEMENT:

Bottom of the Load Order.

"Realistic Fallout" is a collection of hundreds of changes to Fallout 4 aiming at increasing the realism while retaining the fun aspect. No changes made here should compromise your enjoyment of the game nor are its features overcomplicated. This mod, however, was unapologetically created for players that value immersion.
I've scoured all (ALL) 160 pages of the "immersion" and "gameplay" categories of mods on Nexus to draw inspiration for this mod. My criteria was simplicity and near perfect compatibility. There are no added scripts or new assets in this file, everything was made editing the game's parameters on Creation Kit directly and slotted in a single ".esp" file.
I tried to keep out tweaks that could override other configurations players usually employ. I also avoided edits that could be considered divisive, so most people can enjoy this mod and add new things without worrying too much.
"Realistic Fallout" was made to compliment the mod "Advanced Needs 76" , but can be used without it (I'm not sure if it exists on Playstation, unfortunately).
I also advise using mods that make the loot and items placed in the world scarcer, for the full, intended experience.

Features

Difficulty Settings:
Player damage dealt to enemies is set to 1x in "Hard" and "Very Hard" difficulties to avoid bullet sponginess. Enemy damage dealt to the player is left like in vanilla across all difficulties. Survival Mode is left entirely vanilla.
Time Scale:
Utilized the popular "6 to 1" time scale (1 minute in real life is 6 minutes in-game, unlike in vanilla where 1 minute in real life is 20 minutes in-game). Fast Travel speed was adjusted to compensate for the slower passage of time.
Healing and Chems:

• Unnatended broken limbs will start healing in 2 in-game days, and will be fully healed after 5 in-game days (adjusted for this mod's time scale). Sleeping still heals limbs, however, healing from sleep can be turned off or set to partial healing if using "Advanced Needs 76".
  
• Stimpaks and Radaway heal overtime (10 seconds for full effect).
  
• One Stimpak only heals up to 25% of a damaged limb's health and the healing process also happens overtime.
  
• Chems that fortify damage only work on melee weapons and fists.
  
• Added "chemist" perk requirement to craft stimpaks, radaways and chems. Level requirement vary according to the buff. Added "robotics expert" lvl 01 requirement to build "robot repair kit".
  
• Molerat Disease: you get a crippling debuff of -40hp, but it only lasts for 10 days. This retains the moral implications of the Vault 81 questline and is realistic (a child wouldn't survive for long), but doesn't punish too harshly players that decide to follow a virtuous path.
  

Lockpicking:

• The lockpicking sweet spot is reduced to make the minigame more of a challenge. Bobby pins aren't too brittle so the challenge is fair.
  
• Locks won't tell you the level of the lock anymore.
  

Food, Cooking, Foraging, Hunting and Farming:

• All foods that require dirty water now cost purified water instead*;
  
• All foods that require heat cost 1 wood on top of the other ingredients;*
  
• Purified Water recipe is now 1 dirty water and 1 wood*;
  
• All crops require 1 fertilizer to be planted (a bag of fertilizer can be scrapped for 4);*
  

* Wood and Fertilizer must be manually scrapped from objects in settlements to be able to be used for cooking and planting. This is to avoid automatic scrapping of objects you dont want to destroy, and is more immersive.

• Creatures give food and parts based in their size, a fraction of the loot's quantity is randomized to keep hunting interesting.
  
• Creatures don't drop nonsensical loot such as caps, ammo, guns and armor.
  
• All plants yield a random number of produce based on their 3d models in the game.
  
• Wild crops found during exploration can be planted at settlements.
  
• All sealed, prewar industrialized foods have their rad effects removed (except Nuka Colas);
  
• Removed healing effects from food. Now food is only used for sustenance and for its secondary buffs (note: health will still "increase" when the food has a "fortify health" buff);
  
• Bubblegum gives a temporary +1 charisma buff (sweet breath)
  
• Mystery Bacon and Mystery Jerky now increase hp temporarily according to your cannibal perk level (lvl 1 = 10hp for 1min, lvl 2 = 15hp for 2 mins, lvl 3 = 20 hp for 3 mins).
  

Carry Weight and Power Armor:

• The weight of most junk and misc items have been revised. Hundreds of objects have had their weights adjusted to resemble real life more closely while still being adequate for gameplay purposes. In general this means 90% of the junk you find will be 2 to 4 times lighter than in the base game (weapons and armor are unnafected).
  
• Base carry weight is reduced to 60, and CW per strength level is decreased to 5 points per level. You gain no extra carry weight at level up besides the points you get from investing in strength. This balancing aims to simulate real life more closely (a fit adult that is able to carry 60 to 105 pounds), but should be balanced for gameplay purposes. It is highly advisable to use a backpack mod, since these usually adds CW in a range of 40 to 60 pounds. **
  
• Power Armor has a base bonus of 200 carry weight to compensate for the carry weight debuff. You still can't wear backpacks in power armor, but this won't be an issue since you'll have 60 + 200 + 55 from the strength buff PA gets, which is roughly 315 carry weight.
  

Ammo prices:
Ammo prices are increased across the board. I tried applying some logic into it while retaining a balance for gameplay purposes. This is meant for games where ammo is rare and very expensive. Guns have vanilla prices because in the post-apocalypse they would be lying around, but ammo is increasingly scarcer.
I believe I covered all ammo in the game except for the "Contraptions" stuff and whatever Creation Club and the next gen patch might have introduced. These may come later. Contrary to popular belief I never actually finished Fallout 4 so there are tons of things I never witnessed in the game.
Here are some examples of prices per round from the top of my head (the prices CK uses take in consideration a character with charisma 10 if I'm not mistaken. Your actual prices in game will be higher):
.38 = 10 caps 10mm = 20 caps Energy / Cryo = 25 caps Shotgun Shells = 30 caps Rifle Shells = 30 caps Syringer = 20 caps Alien = very expensive (don't recall, probably 300 or 500) Automatics = around 12 or 13 caps (cheaper than most regular rounds) Fusion Cores = 500 caps (yeah...)
Crafting:

• All turrets have "Scrapper" lvl 1 as a base requirement;
  
• All generators, powered water pumps and water purifiers now have "Scrapper" lvl 1 as a base requirement, and more advanced models have "Science" perk requirements. Component requirements have been slightly increased;
  
• The regular water pump still has vanilla costs and doesn't require "Scrapper" lvl 1, so you can help Sturges out easily;
  
• The Decontamination Arch now requires "Science" lvl 2, "Medic" lvl 2, "Scrapper" lvl 2 and the component requirements have been slightly increased;
  
• Fusion Cores can be recharged at Chemlabs using 150 fusion cells and perk "Science" lvl 1. Make sure you only have one fusion core in your inventory at the time or the chemlab will recharge a random fusion core from your inventory (you can't choose which).
  
• All poisons (syringer ammo) require "chemist" lvl 01 to be crafted.
  
• Workbench crafting requires specific perks and are no longer tied to "Local Leader" 2. Changes are as follows:
  

-"Armorer " 1 for armor and PA benches; -"Gun Nut" 1 for weapons workbenches; -"Chemist" 1 for chem workbenches; -"Robotics Exp" 1 for robot workbench.

Things this mod doesn't do

This mod focuses on implementing changes for:
gameplay settings misc items junk items ammo recipes specific leveled lists for flora and fauna.

• I will not implement changes that relies on external assets or scripts.
  
• I will most likely dont do edits to movement speed and enemy AI since these could conflict with combat overhauls.
  
• I will not edit records that tweak weapons and armors, since these are often handled by other overhauls, which could end up being overwritten by my mod. Compatibility is a central concern in RF2.

TITLE-We want our name on the title so we have a say in what happens to the car bc it's all our money. Will will be buying the car with CASH, no financing. But we don't want any unnecessary liability. Should we put our names and his ex name? Should it just be in her name?
INSURANCE-If we have our names on it and his ex insures it, would I have to tell our insurance? Does it matter who's name is first? If my teen is in an accident could they come after both his ex and us? If we become a lienholder does that prevent me from that liability? Not sure we want to go this route but can we insure the car when our teen doesn't live with us and is in another state?
LIEN?-Anyone know how liens work? Can I buy the car outright (CASH) and put either the teen and/or his ex on the title so his ex can insure it before we drive it off the lot? Or do we have to jump thru another hoop?
SALES TAX- Will I have to pay double tax/tag/title (FL & GA)? if we buy it in FL can I get them to work with GA to get it registered up there? If I become the lien holder can I automatically get it transferred to his ex without having to "sell" it to his ex and paying tax again?
I plan on typing up a promisary note to say the teen will be a responsible driver, keep up with maintenance etc. I know technically I can't enter into a contract with a minor there will be a blurb about resigning it when she turns 18. Any suggestions on what to add?

Chapter Summaries:
Chapter 1 - I Am Born: David Copperfield launches into the retelling of his life story with that famous line that questions whether he or someone else will turn out to be the hero of his life…but we’ll just have to read the whole thing to find out! Immediately we are let in on the unusual circumstances of David’s birth, which is suffused with superstition, causing the town gossips to speculate wildly. He was born on a Friday night near midnight, which of course means that he’ll have an unlucky life and be visited by ghosts and spirits. (I mean, would this even be a Victorian novel without some ghosts? David assures us that he’s yet to be haunted, though.) He was also born with a caul (inside the amniotic sac) which means he’ll be safe from drowning. This is apparently such great news that they advertise the caul for sale after his birth, but only get one hit on Victorian Craigslist, so they hang onto it until they can put it up for a raffle several years later. David says he remembers that raffle and found it super weird to watch a piece of himself get sold off, which, fair! He does note that the old lady who won the caul died in bed and not by drowning, so I suppose it was worth it?
Anyway, back to David’s birth! His father had been dead for six months on the night of his birth, and his mother was a terrified teenager living alone with Peggoty, her servant-girl, so called because they share the same first name. One Friday afternoon in March, his mother was hanging out by the fire and pondering the likelihood of dying in childbirth, when a formidable woman named Betsey Trotwood showed up at her door. Miss Betsey was his father’s aunt and she loved Mr. Copperfield, but hated her abusive husband, who she paid off to go to India and leave her alone. It worked - he died there! On the night in question, Miss Betsey literally pokes her nose into Mrs. Copperfield’s window and then demands that the pregnant lady get up to let her in. Being a force of nature, she takes charge of the room right away, criticizing the Copperfields’ choice of home (a rookery with no birds?) and making somewhat disparaging remarks about Mrs. Copperfield’s history as an orphan and a nanny. She also declares that the baby will be a girl and demands to be the godmother and namesake so the new Betsey Trotwood (Copperfield) can undo all the mistakes of Great Aunt Betsey’s life. Mrs. Copperfield goes into labor and Miss Betsey stays by the fire, plugging up her ears with cotton. She spends some time mildly abusing Ham Peggoty (the servant’s nephew who was hanging around the house to carry emergency messages) and generally ignoring the doctor. Said doctor, Mr. Chillip, is a gentle man but speaks so slowly that Miss Betsey almost throttles him. When he congratulates her on the birth of a BOY, she smacks him upside the head with her bonnet and leaves immediately, never to darken the Copperfields’ door again! Welcome to the world, David!
Chapter 2 - I Observe: David Copperfield relates some of his early impressions of life: his memories of creepy pantries, stuffy parlors, boring church services, and a loving home. His mother is young and beautiful in these memories, and Peggoty is beautiful to him in her own way (though she insists she is not). One day, Davy's mom shows up with a stranger who walks her home and - gasp! - touches her hand! Davy immediately dislikes this black-bearded, dead-eyed interloper and Peggoty seems to like him even less. He falls asleep while his mother is swooning over her new admirer, but when he wakes up his mom and Peggoty are having a big fight. Peggoty says the new man is bad news and Mr. Copperfield would never approve, while Davy's mom says Peggoty is being unfair and heartless. When all she does is sacrifice for Davy, doesn't she deserve some attention and excitement?! All three of them end up crying, and things are never quite the same between the trio again.
Davy's mom continues to see this man, Mr. Murdstone, who rides up one day and invites Davy to take a little trip with him to see a yacht. Peggoty gets him ready in a huff, and you can just tell this is the Victorian era version of riding on the irresponsible boyfriend's motorcycle without a helmet. Davy gets to meet some friends of Mr. Murdstone and watch them do a bunch of paperwork on the yacht. They also make fun of him, comment on how hot his mom is, and make him drink brandy. Since Davy is a little kid, he thinks they're having a grand time. When he later tells his mom they complimented her looks, she is quite thrilled. And then a few months later, Peggoty invites Davy to go with her to visit her brother for a fortnight. She talks up the trip so Davy will be excited, but it's clear she's worried. Davy wonders how his mom will fare all alone, but Peggoty assures him she will stay with a neighbor. (Lies!) Mr. Murdstone is there to see them off and he has … opinions … about how emotional Davy's mom is during the goodbyes. I'm with Davy when he wonders why it's any of this guy's business in the first place. In retrospect, Davy reflects that he wishes he had known he was leaving something behind forever and he is glad that he and his mom had a touching moment full of love as his carriage pulled away.
Chapter 3 - I Have a Change: Davy endures a very boring journey across flat countryside towards the sea to get to Peggoty’s family in Yarmouth. When Davy complains, Peggoty defends her hometown, as a proud Yarmouth Bloater. (Here's some bonus reading: a Victorian-era article about bloaters.) Davy is won over when they reach the busy fishing town and he gets to see the Peggoty home: it is a boat that has been converted for living, and he thinks it is pretty perfect. It turns out to be a full house due to the generous nature of Mr. Peggoty (original Peggoty's brother). Just don't mention said generosity because it makes him super mad. Mr. Peggoty has taken in the orphaned children - Ham and Em'ly - of his drowned brothers, as well as Mrs. Gummidge, the widow of his fishing partner. Davy's fortnight with the Peggotys is full of happiness. He explores the seashore with Em'ly and falls in love with her. They bond over never knowing their dads, although Em'ly wishes she were a lady in the same class as Davy. Davy reflects that given what he knows of her future life, it might've been better if Em'ly drowned that day by the sea. Dark! Mrs. Gummidge often has melancholy moods where she cries all day and declares she has it worse than everyone else, but the family kindly chalks it up to mourning for her husband and assures her they don't want her to go off to the poorhouse and die.
As the visit draws to a close, Davy realizes he has quite forgotten to miss his home and becomes eager to see his mother and Blunderstone Rookery. Yet when they arrive, Peggoty pulls him into the kitchen nervously. She really botches the delivery of her big news because Davy first thinks his mother may have died and then, when she tells him he has a dad, imagines Mr. Copperfield may have risen from the dead. But she brings him to the parlor to greet his new step-dad: it's Mr. Murdstone, of course. Mr. Murdstone proves himself to be a real downer, kicking things off by correcting Davy's mom (who we discover is named Clara) for jumping up too enthusiastically at her son’s arrival. Davy sneaks away to find that his house has completely changed and the yard has acquired a mean, black dog that snaps at him.
Chapter 4 - I Fall Into Disgrace: Davy has fallen asleep crying after the discovery of his mother’s marriage, and when Clara and Peggoty wake him, his mom blames both Peggoty and Davy for his despair. Mr. Murdstone comes up and dismisses them both so he can be alone with Davy. He explains that if he had a stubborn animal, he’d beat it until it obeyed, strongly implying that Davy had better change his attitude or else. Things get pretty grim for Davy after this. He is kept isolated from both his family and neighborhood children. Mr. Murdstone’s sister, Jane, comes to live with them and immediately takes over Blunderstone. Clara is given no say in household matters: even the keys are kept by Miss Murdstone and, when Clara protests and weeps at being pushed aside, the Murdstones manipulate her into apologies and submission. When the family goes to church, Peggoty is no longer invited and the Murdstones keep Davy and his mother apart; Davy also notices that the family seems to be the subject of much whispering and staring from the community.
Davy’s days are miserable. He is often locked up alone in his room, where he loses himself in his father’s old stash of novels and uses this escape as a survival mechanism. (This collection of novels was taken straight from Dickens’ own childhood, according to his biographer John Forster.) When allowed out of his room, Davy endures lengthy, difficult lessons in the parlor. He suspects the lessons are meant as much to teach his mom the Murdstone tradition of firmness tyranny as they are to educate him. No matter how hard Davy tries, he cannot seem to remember the lessons under such severe supervision. Davy is belittled as stupid for his mistakes and boxed on the ears with his books by Mr. Murdstone. When Clara tries to help Davy at one point, Miss Murdstone catches her, and both Clara and Davy are in a good deal of trouble. Clara is chastised, Davy is removed from the room, and the next day’s lessons are overseen by Mr. Murdstone with a cane and switches. This goes about as well as you would imagine: in his terror, Davy makes more mistakes than ever and is dragged from the room by Mr. Murdstone. To her credit, Clara does protest and try to run after them (unsuccessfully). Mr. Murdstone wields his cane and switches, but Davy bites his hand in an attempt to wriggle away. He then beats Davy severely and leaves him locked in his room for five days. During his imprisonment, Davy sees only Miss Murdstone who brings him meager meals and allows him short walks in the garden each morning and family prayers in the evening, before locking him away again. At the end of this punishment, which feels like years to Davy, Peggoty sneaks to his room to whisper through the keyhole that he will be sent to boarding school in the morning. She tells him his mother isn’t very angry with him, only disappointed, and begs him to remember her and her love for him. She promises to look after Clara and they both vow to write to each other. Davy asks to be remembered to Em’ly and the other Peggotys.
The next morning, his mother expresses her disappointment in his behavior and her hope that boarding school will reform him; Davy seems to realize she has been coached to believe the worst of him. He chokes down a little breakfast before his coach arrives, and Clara steals one unsupervised moment with him to say goodbye affectionately. Then, they are parted, and Davy is on his way to boarding school. It’ll surely be a harmonious and supportive learning environment. Right? Right?!?
Chapter Five - I Am Sent Away From Home: Mr. Barkis, the carrier driving Davy on the first leg of his journey to school, pulls over not too far away from the house. Who should appear out of the bushes but Peggoty! She silently hugs Davy until she pops some buttons of her dress (one of which Davy keeps), hands him some cakes, and slips him a note from his mother that includes two half-crowns. Davy shares a pastry with Mr. Barkis, who asks a lot of questions about Peggoty’s relationship status and cooking skills. He asks Davy to write Mr. Barkis is willin’ in one of his letters to Peggoty, which Davy does at the next stop. As he waits in Yarmouth for the stagecoach to London, Davy eats lunch at a hotel restaurant where he is grifted by the waiter. This unscrupulous man tricks Davy into giving him his ale, most of his food, and some of his money. The rumor goes around that Davy has the appetite of a boa constrictor, making him too nervous to eat at the next stop for supper. Wedged between two men and with a woman’s luggage stuffed underneath him, Davy spends an uncomfortable night in the stagecoach as it approaches London. He finds it strange the next morning, after all the snoring and moaning he witnessed, that the adults insist they were unable to sleep a wink!
Upon arriving at the station in London, there is no one to collect him. Waiting in the office, Davy begins to worry that he will be turned out of the station at night, run out of money and starve, get lost walking home, or have to offer himself as a soldier or sailor (though he knows he is too small for that). Finally, a rather scrawny man - who Davy assumes is the Master of Salem House School - arrives and takes Davy the rest of the way. Weak from lack of food and sleep, Davy begs to stop so he can buy breakfast, and the man takes him to the home of a poor woman (presumably his mother) to cook the provisions they purchase. The man plays the flute very badly as Davy begins to eat, but soon Davy has fallen asleep. He wakes to hear comments of “delicious” which he assumes refers to the man’s music, but I bet indicates they were eating Davy’s breakfast. They continue on to Salem House, where a man with a wooden leg lets them in and throws old boots at Davy’s escort, who turns out to be Mr. Mell, an employee of Mr. Creakle, the school proprietor. Salem House is dilapidated, dirty, and deserted. Davy wonders where everyone is and Mr. Mell informs him that Davy has been sent to school during the holidays as punishment. Another punishment: Davy must wear a sign on his back identifying him as a biter, which makes him increasingly paranoid that someone is always behind him reading it. (Probably not.) He also worries that the students, whose names he can read carved in the doorpost, will all make fun of him for it when they return. (Probably true!) Mr. Mell, an odd man with various ticks, doesn’t pay much attention to Davy, but neither is he mean. We get another ominous reference to the future in that Davy says he dreads the return of boys like J. Steerforth and the presence of “the awful Mr. Creakle”.
