MEGA SIZED Rodem review (with many pics!)
Rodem Slime Shop
7.5oz for $12.99-19.50 Labels are now waterproof! Yaaay! đŸ’ȘđŸ»
I was so excited to get into this giant package from one of my favourite stores, and one I really love to support as they deserve it! This was actually a couple of orders I placed over time and Rodem contacted me to ask me if I wanted to combine them which demonstrates their incredibly attentive customer service. Usually the customer needs to contact the store for this to happen.
Included inside was powdered borax, a free gift slime for each order plus one more because it was a large order and they are generous. This exchange with Rodem got us chatting and then something very special transpired but I will post separately about that as I have to cram a lot of slime into this review and have limited space for images!
I had to brew a cup of tea, sit down and take my time going through all of these to make sure I combined all the correct things! It helps a lot that they are all pictured on the enclosed invoice but it would be helpful if they were packaged together. That having been said, separating the heavy pots of slime from the clays is a good idea when the order is this big and heavy so I can't complain!

  • LEMON TART (DIY butter snowfizz, lemon cookie scented)
This smelled OH SO good. The lemon and the cookie notes comes through and were just delicious and very realistic smelling! Sometimes lemon scent is reminiscent of citrus scented cleaning products to my nose but not this, this was an excellent effort. but My clay lemon was a little squished but clay often can be due to being delicate and tricky to package and the issue is not uncommon with any company.
The clay was soooo very soft, moist and pleasant to squish into the base. After you take the base out the pot you are met with a little bit of “caramel” sauce on the bottom of the pie. It’s all very mouth watering. This was the perfect, massively inflatable snow fizz and I was so in love with it. It was super crunchy and had the expected abundance of ASMR fizzles. It was beautifully activated and in every way a perfect slime. Some may find snow fizz a bit pokey but this wasn’t bad at all, the inflation was very cushioning!

  • TEA TIME (DIY clay, strawberry, blackcurrant, blackberry blended fruity scent)
The scent is fresh, fruity and yummy and the charms SO charming and well thought out! This clay was slightly stiffer and a tad dried out but the base extremely moist, silky and jiggly with tons of resistance on the pulls and I didn't end up with any lumps. It becomes extremely light, puffy, chubby and flubbery with massive pops and medium to soft clicks on the pokes which get louder as it inflates. I love Rodem’s take on this texture, it has all the awesome elements of the fluffy slimes I got from Seoul Gage but was more robust with no destabilisation issues (I found the SG ones a little dehydrated and sticky the next time I played.)

  • BUMPER CAR (silica sand x salt, rose scented, also a choice of peach scent if you prefer)
I love rose scent and this was PERFECT! It isn’t a perfume type scent, just pure, sweet rose water like rose Turkish delight or, indeed, actual rosewater. I was utterly obsessed! This was a stunning slime with a beautiful iridescent pink topper and the most gorgeous little pink bumper car charm. It sounded absolutely incredible to crunch and combine. The little pops, sizzles and crackles were out of this world. This was so heavy in silica crystals and yet not pokey as the pieces were quite smooth and small but of course your mileage may vary. I can’t express just how much I adored this slime, one of my all time favourites!

  • YUMMY POPCORN (styrofoam slay, caramel popcorn scented)
The fact this comes with a little paper popcorn bag containing the Styrofoam "popcorn" is the cutest touch ever! I adore Rodem, they think of everything to make the experience so incredibly fun. This smells just like freshly popped caramel popcorn with a tiny hint of sweet corn, I loved it! The two hyperrealistic popcorn charms that comes with it are hilarious!
The base was soft, jiggly, super clicky and fluffy and the Styrofoam really satisfying to crush into it. I just couldn’t get over how spectacular the scent was, it was making me hungry! This slime was a slightly looser slay texture and needed a little bit of activator to aid in handleability but not much. It had a few nice medium pops in it but very little hold, which unfortunately isn’t to my taste but many people love that. I was tied over this slime as the scent was just divine but I prefer more holdable textures. That is a reflection on my personal tastes however, not the slime which was great! If you like jiggly slays you’ll fall in love with this. I may not be a slay person but there is no way this wasn't going be a keeper, it had just too good a scent and crushing the styrofoam is great fun!

  • CAROUSEL (DIY clay, citrus fruit and aloe blend scented)
The scent wasn't bad but just wasn't a hit for me, a personal taste thing again. The clay was a little bit smooshed and it was tricky to tell what it was but extremely, soft squishy and moist. (Incidentally it was, you guessed it, a carousel 🎠)
The base was quite loose and jiggly and called for a little bit of activator but very soft, chubby, quite matte and pleasant in the hands. This combined into a huge, soft, marshmallowy mound of slime with a lovely plush surface. Super stretchy and fun to fold for soft bubble pops and lovely soft sizzles. It was a little on the loose side for my personal tastes but slay lover will again adore this! It was a well made slime.

  • EMMENTAL CHEESE CAKE (DIY clay/butter, savoury cheese cookie scented)
This was a very interesting, fun and unusual scent. A little sweet but notably savoury with a subtle hint of cheese. The first time I played with it I enjoyed the novelty but the second time I wasn’t sure if I loved it enough to buy again. It’s hard to describe but definitely worth trying.
The HUUUUUGE cheese clay came in a sealed package and was so soft and pleasant to squish. It became a ginormous, matte, sort of butter texture, which was both fairly holdable and yet exceedingly soft. It stuck to my play area a bit. It was quite a job to handle it on account of its size and a difficult texture to describe. It didn’t feel sticky at all on my play surface but stuck to my hands when I tried to pick it up and stretch it. When I pressed my hand into it on the surface it didn’t stick or feel sticky but if I picked it up to try and stretch it, it was very gooey and hard to shape. Activator didn’t seem to make that much of a difference. This was a texture unlike any other I’ve experienced. It’s one I’m a little lukewarm on but still enjoyed playing with for an unusual experience and worth it for the mega-sized clay cheese alone!

  • MIXED COFFEE (super gloss thick T&G, mixed coffee and coffee ice cream blend scented)
This was a delicious, very creamy coffee ice cream/frappe coffee creme scent, very rich with subtle notes of chocolate. It was a medium thickness, super clicky, moist glossy texture with decent resistance on the stretch. Very good and elastic with tons of bubble pops and wet crackles. This was an extremely pleasant and easy to play with moist and jiggly glossy slime. The longer you play the looser it gets but not problematically so.
https://preview.redd.it/hhob7e8ndi0d1.jpg?width=4823&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=eac50e47e3ae4040528d30a10444dede22dea5aa

  • FUJI APPLE ICE CREAM (DIY cloud creme, apple scented)
A lovely, fresh, crisp apple scent. The clay apple is so cute with its velvety exterior and so perfectly made. It was amazing fun to squish. This combined to a super stretchy and ultra fuzzy cloud creme. It was extremely light and super sizzly. This was another texture which is familiar and yet very unusual on account of the extreme fuzziness. I loved it and found it pretty amazing to look at!
https://preview.redd.it/o5fah6ugei0d1.jpg?width=4905&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c3941974b12b9e28570cad567ace8fb1fa46f2d9

  • FLAT PEACH CAKE (DIY clay and coated jelly/fluffy snow, peach scented)
The base has an absolutely beautiful fresh peach scent. Another stunningly well made clay which looks so much like a peach with the way they have created the fuzzy surface and peachy-perfect colour shift. It was soft and great fun to combine into the jelly base. The resulting slime was nice and clicky with big, soft bubble pops. It really felt plush and soft-surfaced on my fingers as I stretched it and was very moist, chubby, jiggly and flubby when I set it down. This was ultra inflatable with nice soft sizzles.
https://preview.redd.it/u2372z0wei0d1.jpg?width=5691&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=f60afeb65d0269a8d83619526e9b97a4c264cb49

  • YAKULT GELATO (DIY snow creme, Yakult scented
A pleasant, mild, fruity yogurty scent. The little scoops of ice cream were so soft, moist and great to squish. This started off with lots of resistance and a nice plush feel as I pulled it. It had moist clicks and soft bubble pops. While it gave a little bit as it warmed up, it did retain a bouncy and elastic stretch with a nice little bit of resistance. This is another fun, boingy, flubby, jiggly texture, which is super inflatable and great fun to play with.
https://preview.redd.it/uaecn0p0fi0d1.jpg?width=8457&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=0009976a0dc188ea74922188d351bcc7aeef8dd1

  • MY COSY SPACE (cloud slime, sweet juicy peach/added perfume)
It’s so ironic that cloud slime is my favorite and yet I have so very few of them retained in my collection as I just can’t find ones I love that drizzle perfectly! I was very, very excited for a cloud from Rodem but also anxious as clouds are so rarely perfectly in line with the exact level of drizzle I’m looking for! I absolutely ADORE the aesthetic with the soft little rug that comes with it in the shape of Rodem’s bunny logo and the couch charm, how stinking CUTE! The slime even matches! I think this is the best charm/slime combo I have ever seen, a big standing ovation for Rodem on this incredibly whimsical and charmingly presented slime!
The scent was a relaxing and homely peachy perfume with notes of bubble bath and baby powder. The drizzle was good!! True cloud is a hard slime to make to spec and, in light of that, a lot of companies don’t really bother with it. I’m so happy Rodem did and did such a great job. It was very soft and plush with gorgeous blankety folds and I have everything crossed they make more of this texture soon. I have no idea what I’ll do with the delightful little rug other than treasure it forever! Haha!
Even just looking at these photos as I type out the review I'm smiling again! I wish this slime was my dressing gown! haha!

  • ONIGIRI (white glue foam chip, savoury black sesame.)
Another incredibly interesting and unique savoury scent. This was definitely giving sesame seed/oil, albeit a bit more subtle than the real thing. I would say your mileage may very on this scent, it won’t be for everyone but it is certainly worth trying for a whole new experience.
This was a medium thickness, glossy texture which was very chewy and clicky. The foam pieces were quite hard and angular but crushable if you really go for it. This was a very novel floam texture which made a great change from the usual balls. This was exploding with fantastic crackles and pops, top tier sounds. I think the angular foam is even better for trapping air as this slime sounded like a tiny elephant stampeding in a bubble wrap factory! I got some big air pocket type bubbles from this one too!
https://preview.redd.it/t6eh86yigi0d1.jpg?width=5986&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5954f9b63ef8b82f6b18c833abed2b45aa816ce0

  • FRENCH APPLE PIE (white glue/snow/fluffy, French apple pie scented)
The apple and the crust both come through in the scent, as well as a little hint of caramel (which is very typical of a French tarte tatin, well done Rodem!) The little doilies in the bottoms of the clay pots (even though the clay is wrapped) are yet another gorgeous little touch that impress me about these guys, I love their intimate attention to detail.
The clay was again super soft and pleasant to squish into the nice, clicky base. This was a lovely, chubby, stretchy slime. It was a little on the thicker side and created satisfying farty bubble pops.
C'est bon!

  • SAKURA SAND (sand slime, sakura flower scented)
This is an absolutely beautiful scent. A slightly cotton candy leaning sweet Sakura. I love pink, I love sand slimes and I love Sakura scents so this really pleased me! Unfortunately I found it very sticky and loose so added a lot of activator until it was more resistant and was able to get it where it needed to be. Once I did it had great bubble pops and was a very sand-dense and crunchy/sizzly sounding slime, the exact sort of sand slime I like.
https://preview.redd.it/z24t4ms5hi0d1.jpg?width=5704&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=38d0ba14bbeeec427f15096407d5c23c0c9f0f67

  • STRAWBERRY MATCHA SUGAR CAKE (snow fizz, strawberry matcha scented)
A nice scent with both strawberry and Matcha coming through. This was an extremely fluffy, airy snowfizz with tons of fantastic ASMR sounds, so fizzy, sizzly and fun to inflate and tingle-inducing to deflate. It started off feeling like a light, sugary super airy scrub and got denser as I played. Another great slime.
https://preview.redd.it/2yfdnspdhi0d1.jpg?width=5788&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2498da365a7c185a377dd2a8b7bbf12c9b80e52e

  • TANGHULU BALL (big foam ball, strawberry-ade)
This had a very subtle strawberryade scent. The giant floam balls were a total novelty to me and SO much fun! Who doesn’t love the feeling of big balls in their hands!? 🙊 The base was quite loose and wonderful for plentiful crackles and pops. I really enjoyed this!
https://preview.redd.it/37msqhrnhi0d1.jpg?width=8440&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=65fa12490f41bec1c7c30cea77764e8082b63382

  • STEAMED BUN (chewy mochi texture, sweet red bean BingSu)
This was an extremely savoury scent, there is some sweetness there but it was very much umami focused and I really enjoyed it! I was getting notes of red bean with a saltiness.
This is a moist, super clicky, jiggly slime with two large sponges in it that crush like jelly cubes. This is extremely bubbly and full of juicy wet crackles and high pitched big pops. You can create absolutely gargantuan air bubbles with this texture. If you, like me, don’t typically enjoy loose jiggly slimes, there is a damn good chance that you will enjoy this as I loved it! It was just so multifaceted with what it offered. First, you have the unusual scent which is pretty intriguing and different. Then you have the two giant cubes to crush which is always nice. Then you have the joy of the crackles, pops and loud clicks. Finally, you have the enormous bubbles! You just can’t not have fun with this!
That bubble (slubble?) was bigger than me!!

  • PLOP DUCKLING (Snow creme, lemon meringue scented)
This has a gorgeous and accurate sweet and creamy lemon meringue scent. It’s so much fun watching the little duck’s butt slowly dive into the slime when you pop him on there.
This was exactly the texture and scent I fancied finishing on and quite by chance it was! I couldn’t find Rodem’s description for this one’s texture until later so I had no idea what to expect as I had forgotten, what a joy!!! This combined into a really lovely, soft sage green. This is another light, soft, squishy, chewy and chubby inflating texture that ends up airy and puffy. I absolutely loved it! Unfortunately that is one more image than I am able to embed on Reddit so please click here to see it!
With Rodem, nothing is fully predictable and every texture brings with it a nice surprise. This is especially pleasing to experience when you place big orders. There is nothing more disappointing to me than buying a lot of slimes from a company just to discovered there is hardly any nuance between them and the experience is basically a rinse and repeat one, texturally identical and/or predictable. Rodem break the mold and throw in some very unusual elements and scents. Their themes are so well thought out and utterly charming and beautifully presented. They produce so many textures and master them, each one designed with so much love and attentiveness.
I really adore this company and feel they work hard to bring joy and excellence to the slime community. Recently one of the more commercial slime companies was caught using Rodem’s brand as a key word on their google ads to steer business away from them and onto their own website which I thought was in very poor taste. It is however testament to the fact that they knew Rodem was a company slime enthusiasts were talking about. And so we should be! It is my pleasure and honour to continue supporting this wonderful company. I'm so excited to see what they come up with next!
I loved pretty much every slime and the ones I didn’t were more so a personal taste thing than a quality control issue. There were a couple I found less handleable or with activation issues (Emmental and Sakura Sand) but that is pretty damn good going for an order this huge and the sand one was easily fixable. A well deserved 9.9/10

2024.05.14 23:56 Comfortable_Ad6893 As my energy has increased, the demons have come out to play!

So on my 3rd streak leading up to two weeks. the energy and strength to continue has been very different- been weed and alcahol free for 3 months, daily runs, meditation, working out, healthy eating, reading , journaling- the whole shabbang. No edging, no looking at pron, even if i accidently see cheeks on instagram its easier for my brain to just go "hm whatever".
I'm very much now focused on pushing to the 3month mark to feel more of this power and even being mentally dedicated to only releasing once I find a woman which is worth my life essence. (ITS ME SEASON RN)
Now. Thing is, in the theme of getting more opportunies on this journey, I have recently found an opportunity online for a video editor role (been video editing for about 13 years or so now) for a Onlyfans agency, naturally the managers love my portfolio and my energy (LOL).
The work is easy and the pay is incredible. 3%-5% of what the model earns monthly (which is like 300k-400k). As I've been going through a spiritual awakening during this time, life has been LIFING harddd, so financially I am destroyed, lets just say that lol. An opportunity like this would not only put me back on my feet, but be very transformative in a short space of time.
I've done a few tests (not pron just SFW insta teasing stuff) which took about 1 hour to edit and sent it off to them and theyre happy with the work. Even during the editing process I still had that "hmm whatever its just work attitude" and didnt even feel horny while editing or anything. Thing is when I asked them to specify what type of stuff id be editing they said itd more NSFW solo stuff and of course from a editor stand point I said I was able to pull it off, but from the standpoint of a clean hearted semen retainer I was like urghhhh mannnn.
Work is work right, and even if I have to put a fkn padlock on my pants then imma do what I gotta do. But im just concerned about the deeper subconcious effects of editing this content over a prolonged period of time and whether my dopamine receptors are gonna be screaming in agony.
I don't really know what im looking for from positng this. I just cant really talk to family about this job for obvious reasons and just want some perspective, cos yeah I may be broke but feeling energetically broken is just as bas if not worse!

tl;dr As I really start to feel like a make progress, the demons throw me a curve ball.

2024.05.14 21:18 NotQuiteRealityFF Lights Over Montgomery County Collector's Bluray

Lights Over Montgomery County Collector's Bluray
Hey all,
Late last year I started a found footage physical media company called Not Quite Reality (bonus points if you can name the movie reference). It's been a slow and bumpy start but things finally feel like they're picking up!
So far I've released a standard DVD of The Who Incident, and both a Collector's and Standard bluray of Mothman. I plan to focus on low budget titles and work directly with indie directors to make sure they get paid for their work. For my third release, I'm putting out a special Evidence Files Cut of Lights Over Montgomery County. I have multiple other titles lined up for future releases.
If you're unfamiliar, Lights Over Montgomery County can best be described as a sort of homage to the homemade SOV films of the 80's - a sci-fi plot full of gory practical effects - that also shares themes and styles of movies like The McPherson Tape or WNUF Halloween Special.
(It's also available for free on Tubi for anybody that wants to check it out before buying)
My goal with Not Quite Reality is to focus on quality menus, collector's packaging, and bonus features. I also plan on expanding the merch beyond just art prints and posters in the near future. For now I'm handmaking everything on BD-R, but I eventually hope to grow big enough to be a fully-fledged boutique label with larger and more frequent titles.
Even if this type of stuff isn't your thing, I'd still appreciate you giving my Facebook page and website a look, and follow if it's something you'd be interested in keeping up with!

2024.05.14 01:03 __kaleidoscope $2500 Budget for my first gaming/streaming PC

1. What will you be doing with this PC? Be as specific as possible, and include specific games (ex: resolution, FPS, settings) or programs you will be using.
I primarily use my PC for:
I'll usually have my web browser and a Discord call in the background.
I stream either games or art 5-7 days/week. An average stream is about 4-6 hours, but it can go up to 12 hours per session for several weeks. Otherwise I work on art commissions and editing.
Currently, FFXIV sits comfortably around 144 FPS on low settings, and most games run fine at 60+ FPS on medium. So I'd like to keep it about the same, if not better. I have no interest in running games at high/maximum settings, but if the PC can do that, then cool 👍
2. What is your maximum PRE-TAX budget before rebates and shipping?
$2500. I don't mind going over if the price is right, but no more than $3000 please.
3. When do you plan on building/buying the PC? Note: beyond a week or two from today means any build you receive will be out of date when you want to buy.
Within the next 1-2 weeks.
4. What, exactly, do you need included in the budget? (ex: toweOS/monitokeyboard/mouse/etc)
Tower & OS.
5. If reusing any parts (including monitor(s)/keyboard/mouse/etc), what parts will you be reusing? How old are they? Brands and models are appreciated.
6. Will you be overclocking (ex: CPU/GPU/RAM)? If yes, are you interested in overclocking right away, or down the line?
Not at all.
7. Are there any specific features or items you want/need in the build? (ex: SSD, Wi-Fi/Bluetooth, VR, VirtualLink, tensor cores, large amount of storage or a RAID setup, CUDA or OpenCL support, etc)
8. Do you have any specific case preferences (ex: mITX/mATX/mid-towefull-tower sizes, styles, colours, window or not, LED lighting, etc.), or a particular color theme preference for the components?
No preference, as long as cable management is happy. White would be cool, but whatever is fine. I'll probably put the tower either under my standing desk (>26") or beside it, so no preference on height.
9. Do you need a copy of Windows included in the budget? Note: some post-secondary students can get Windows 10 for free.
Yes. 64-bit
10. Will you be upgrading this PC in the future (ie: will you swap out better parts later on or will you build an entirely new tower later)? If so, when?
If the computer can last at least 6 years without upgrading, that would be solid. Ideally I'd just swap parts, but if the build works, I'll probably gift and/or build another one for my family in the future.
11. Do you have a brand preference? (ex: AMD/Intel for CPUs, AMD/NVIDIA for video cards, etc)
I stream on Twitch with OBS, so I'd like to try NVIDIA if possible. But honestly, if it performs well, I'll take it.
12. What are the specs of your old PC / laptop? Do you want to see if it can be upgraded instead? If so, paste its build from PCPartPicker here.
(2021) Lenovo Legion 5 15ACH6A: AMD Ryzen 5 5600H, AMD Radeon RX 6600M 8GB, 512GB SSD
13. Extra info or particulars:
I'll be giving my current laptop to my dad! I'm mostly happy with it, but I want to upgrade to a PC after using laptops for over a decade lol.
One issue I have currently: Regardless if I stream online or record offline, sometimes the audio is distorted for a few seconds (however, there are no issues with hearing my microphone nor frame dropping). I've never encountered this issue with my older PC (~2015) or when I was using my previous mic (now broken).
I suspect my issues stem from a combination of stream bitrate, too many active USB ports/externals, microphone, or just plain user error. I don't think the issue is related to AMD or sound bitrate necessarily, since the laptop had no issues with streaming in the first few years. But honestly, I don't know, my friends don't know either, and I'm too afraid to change anything more lmao.
I have plans to replace my keyboard, don't worry đŸ„Č I've gotten many recommendations lmao.
I have no experience with building PCs or comparing parts, so I'd appreciate any advice! One of my friends offered to help build the PC, and I'll be looking up guides too 👍

2024.05.13 23:15 oftenfrequently Comparing the HTT strategies for each of the main families

Comparing the HTT strategies for each of the main families
Fair warning, this is gonna be a long one :)
I started working on this for my own purposes because I’m fascinated by the similarities and differences between the HTT styling approaches Kibbe recommends for the different ID families, but then thought it might be helpful to share with the sub. I always see lots of mention of “lines,” but the overall HTT approach for each ID is sometimes (often) oversimplified. Plus all the other very fun elements that make up a HTT are, imo, getting short shrift! There are a few users who have posted amazing full HTTs for their IDs and I'm hoping even more people will be inspired to explore.
So what even is this post?
Basically, I went through the styling directives in Metamorphosis (Chapter 4) for the main families and directly compared the recommendations for the IDs on a number of smaller, more discrete variables because my brain finds it more digestible that way. I only did the main families because “you’re a [insert family here] first and foremost!!” is a thing regardless of your ID ;) And I thought it was more interesting to compare the elements of the pure families without the influence of any other undercurrents. Also it just would have been a lot of work to do all of them 🙃.
A few notes before getting to the good stuff
  • I tried to mostly focus on the words Kibbe uses to evoke feelings rather than specific items, since the book was written in the 80s and clothing is obviously quite different.
  • Some of the things that fall in the middle of a scale have debateable positioning since the middles are sometimes hard to compare (ex. Is a moderate pinstripe more angular or less angular than a soft-edged plaid? My vote was more angular but your vote could be the opposite!) I included all of the language I used to determine placement on the scales so you can make your own call if you want.
  • I disincluded some, ahem, charged descriptors in a few IDs but I don’t think it changes the overall picture painted of what that ID would be looking to channel in their HTTs
This post includes all of the scales I compared the families on in 6 main categories - silhouette, fabric, detail, prints, color, and accessories - plus some keywords that came up for each family that give the overall impression of the HTT. I might make a second part later with key similarities and differences between the approaches for each pair of families, but we'll see! I'm also interested in any discussion here or observations that others might have on the various categories :)
And of course you can always read Metamorphosis for yourself in full here, which I highly recommend!

1. Silhouette

This section is related to the base silhouette of an outfit - the overall shape of garments that make up a HTT and how they relate to one another. For the purposes of this category, I'm defining "ensemble" as the pieces look related or like they were purchased together, which I believe is the sense Kibbe uses it in.

Shapes
  • D - “keep shapes sharp and geometric. Triangles, rectangles, and everything sculpted, sleek, and elongated, with crisp edges.” “square, sharp shoulders”
  • R - “keep your shapes rounded with soft edges! Circles, ornate swirls, and intricate flowing shapes” “shoulders should be curved”
  • C - “slightly geometric or slightly curved, blend the same shapes together in your look” “slight, crisp shoulder padding”
  • N - “geometric shapes with soft or rounded edges are the key. Rounded-edged rectangles. Soft oblongs, rounded-edged squares, irregular shapes, and soft asymmetrics.” “soft-edged shoulder pads are very good”
  • G - “small, sharp geometrics” “sharp edges and crisp tailoring” “crisp” “sharp edges and extreme tailoring and construction” “sharp shoulder pads”
Outline quality
  • D - “Always straight, with elongated draping that is sleek”
  • R - “your outline should always be soft and flowing” “lots of gentle draping everywhere” “soft fluidity”
  • C - “smooth and symmetrical with the emphasis on controlled and even edges, soft, straight lines, or smoothly curved lines - softly tailored or slightly flowing.”
  • N - “a relaxed, straight line is the outline of your look”
  • G - “sharp, straight, and staccato” “severe lines with sharp edges” “broken, staccato, animated outline. Utilizing many short vertical lines and many short horizontal lines is also effective.”
Closeness of fit
  • D - “always tailored and sculpted” “streamlined shape” “tailored and sleek” “the more tailored the better”
  • R - “showcase the lush curves of your body” “Sleeves should be tapered at the wrist” “waistline should always be emphasized, with soft gathers, folds, draped sashes, and lightweight and supple belts to give a cinched effect” “[Jackets] should be fitted at the waist”
  • C - “very slight draping in constructed garments” “crisp and finished cuffs” “tailored pleats” “narrow and tailored [jackets] with a smooth outline.” “lightweight unconstructed jackets are fine when they are kept sleek and narrow. Blazers, cardigan-style, elongated Chanel (not cropped) are all good choices” “softly tailored”
  • N - “softly tailored, always unconstructed” “Your outline should be fairly narrow and slim, in a loose and easy way.” “Dropped waist detail (loose sashes, overbloused tops, ties, etc) is excellent, as are slightly dropped shoulders.” “Relaxed shapes” “relaxed and easy fit” “dresses should be simple and unconstructed, with a narrow shape and a relaxed outline.”
  • G - “Precision fitted and crisply tailored” “[a] precisely fitted silhouette is crucial to your look” “Sharp and narrow waist definition.” “very fitted” “[skirts] should be very fitted at the waistband” “Pants should always be very sharply tailored with outlined or animated detail at the edges (waistbands, pleats, crisp cuffs).” “Skin tight stretchy pants are excellent” “Very tailored [blouses] with sharp edges and crisp detail (collars, cuffs, pleats, etc.)”
Length of garments
  • D - “Long, vertical lines are essential.” “generally [jackets] should be long (ending at the mid-thigh area), although a very sleek, Italian-style might be cropped (be sure this has an extremely sculpted, streamlined shape)” “straight and long [skirts]” “a long hem” “long cardigans or pullovers”
  • R - "lengths should be kept gracefully long as uneven hemlines (mid-calf), and short as the tapered styles with an even hemline (mid kneecap)" "[for sweaters] short lengths with waist detail"
  • C - “standard length is best [for jackets] (just below break of hip)” “slightly longer jackets are possible when the corresponding skirt is elongated to match.” “moderate length [skirts]”
  • N - “Elongated [jackets] (ending from the upper thigh on down.)” “Moderate length [skirts]” “Very short skirts for fun/funky looks.” “Nearly all styles [of pants] are excellent, from very casual to very dressy
short, cropped, or long.” “Any and all lengths [for sweaters]”
  • G - “Short, cropped [jackets]” “Straight, sharp, and short [skirts]” “A slightly flared hemline [on skirts] may be slightly longer (top of the calf). Anything extremely long is very tricky, and must have a slit and be pencil slim.” “[For pants] Short lengths, anywhere from cropped at the calf to the top of the ankle.” “Short, cropped cardigans” “Short cropped jackets, vests, and boleros work well with dresses for you”
Cohesion
  • D - “keep individual pieces blended together in an artful way for elegance”
  • R - “include an artful blending of plush textures, draped fabrics, and luxurious colors” “avoid any kind of harsh contrast between top and bottom”
  • C - “A clean, unbroken silhouette is your most elegant statement! Think ‘head-to-toe’, and blend everything accordingly.” “Use [separates] carefully and sparingly” “Make sure colors, textures, and prints blend together”
  • N - “Separates are extremely exciting on you, and should make up the bulk of your wardrobe” “you’ll do better with an artful mixture of patterns, textures and colors than you will with an overly matched look” “designer sportswear” “definitely mix n’ match in the most sophisticated sense of the word”
  • G - “A use of well-coordinated separates with lots of animated and colorful detail can be very exciting to your look.”
Some random observations from me about this category
  • N fam has a truly impressive amount of versatility in terms of the length of pieces they're recommended, probably because they're the only family that's really strongly encouraged to go whole hog with a mix and match/separates-forward approach (a superpower tbh).
  • Although the scale of pieces recommended are obviously quite different, the words he uses to describe the shapes for D and G fams are extremely similar. Definitely two families that benefit from an emphasis on crisp sharpness and angularity.
  • I thought it was interesting that he used "softly tailored" in both the C and N fam sections, although the effect they're going for is very different (blended understated elegance vs. relaxed funky easy vibes).
  • He never uses the word "wide" in the N fam section. He does, however, use "narrow" and "loosely tailored" a number of times 😈 No oversized shapeless potato sacks here!

2. Fabric

This category is pretty self-explanatory I hope!
https://preview.redd.it/94e76p19190d1.jpg?width=1976&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=816214030ae525dd16ec2e071426eab1e571c544
Definition
  • D - “fabrics that hold a defined shape are necessary”
  • R - “fabrics that drape easily” “flowing”
  • C - “beautiful, luscious fabrics are an important element in your understated look” “very slight draping in constructed garments.”
  • N - “loose and easy”
  • G - “must always be crisp, able to hold a defined shape, and be tailored easily”
Range of textures (how many different fabrics can they use)
  • D - “Moderate to heavyweights are best, with a matte finish and a smooth surface” “textures should be tightly woven, and shiny fabrics should be very stiff and ultraglitzy”
  • R - “softly woven fabrics” “ultrashiny fabrics” “ultrasoft or plush textures” “sheer fabrics” “any kind of sparkle is excellent”
  • C - “Matte finish or slight sheen.” “Luxurious to the touch” “lightweight textures” “smooth knits” “smooth chiffon and elegantly beaded fabrics for evening.”
  • N - “All soft textures are excellent” “any fabric with a rough or nubby surface” “any wrinkly fabric works well” “all woven fabrics” “knits are excellent in nearly any weight and thickness, from very finely woven to very heavy and rough” “Plush velours, suede, and soft leather are perfect” “drapable fabrics are best kept to heavier weight jerseys.” “A matte finish is far superior to sheen for daytime” “In the evening, you can go very glitzy with hard-finished sheens”
  • G - “a flat surface or light texture is best” “finely woven knits, especially when ribbed and skinny, are good choices.” “matte finish is best, although hard-finished sheens can be very exciting (especially metallics)”
Weight
  • D - “Moderate to heavyweights are best” “occasionally lightweight fabrics can work if they are extra-structured in the design of the garment”
  • R - “lightweight fabrics”
  • C - “moderate weights. Lightweights in very constructed or tailored garments.”
  • N - "knits are excellent in nearly any weight and thickness, from very finely woven to very heavy and rough." “moderate weights are best, although textures can easily be lighter”
  • G - “usually your fabric will be of moderate weight, though lighter weights that hug the body are excellent”
Some random observations from me about this category
  • Again lots of similarities for G and D fam as far as structure and matte finish, although D also has heavier structured wovens while G has fine knits.
  • R fam and N fam get by far the most diverse recommendations as far as fabric and textures go (again a ton of versatility in N fam!). Seems like you really can't go wrong with something sparkly, shiny, glitzy, or plushy if you're in R fam. And for N fam it sounds like you get to mix far more textures into one HTT than everybody else does, which is exciting!
  • I thought the emphasis on flowing for R fam was interesting. It makes total sense - I haven't read too deeply into R since I am clearly not one lol - but for some reason I had flowing associated with N in my mind.
  • I really love the C recommendations myself - "luscious fabrics" just makes me think about burrowing in a cashmere blanket haha. I could definitely picture Grace Kelly as I was reading them.

3. Prints

Also self-explanatory!
https://preview.redd.it/nn24my93490d1.jpg?width=1920&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=3a8d47c3a4d4d5984b6cac8d9deeccdf7da834c4
Pattern
  • D - “bold and geometric: stripes, zigzags, asymmetrics, and irregular shapes.” “Think Picasso and strive for a contemporary feeling”
  • R - “rich and luscious with the emphasis on an abstract, watercolor blend (think Monet). Swirls of color, flowing together, with soft and rounded edges may be used in abundance.”
  • C - “symmetrical, evenly spaced, and regular or realistic patterns. Understated prints (pin dots, pinstripes, checks, blended plaids, herringbone, symmetrical paisleys, etc.)”
  • N - “casual styles that are soft-edged geometrics (plaids, stripes, paisleys, etc.) and funky prints in irregular shapes (abstract asymmetrics, leaves, animal prints, etc.).”
  • G - “Prints should be sharp, colorful, and animated. Small geometrics and angular asymmetrics are excellent. Most of your prints should be very contemporary in feeling (“Picasso-ish”) although humorous styles that are outlined and caricatured can be quite stunning on you as well.”
Contrast
  • D - “Bold color combinations and high-contrast blends work best”
  • R - “swirls of color, flowing together”
  • C - “Make sure colors, textures, and prints blend together” “understated”
  • N - “generally have a softly blended edge”
  • G - “colorful and animated” “outlined” “contrast”
Scale
  • D - “bold”
  • R - “luxuriously large: oversized florals or feathery shapes are especially lovely”
  • C - “understated”
  • N - “moderate scale to slightly large”
  • G - “small”
Some random observations from me about this category
  • Again lots of similarities for D and G for the type (sharp geometric) and feeling of prints (contemporary/Picasso) with the main difference being large vs. small scale (don't worry, they're about to diverge hardcore 😂)
  • R fam is recommended significantly more abstract and organic prints than everyone else. I also thought it was interesting that both D and R call for larger-scale prints - finally something in common!
  • For C fam it seems like the most important thing is that the prints blend in and are understated rather than drawing attention to themselves.
  • Preferring high contrast and sharp prints vs slightly more blended and soft ones seems like a notable difference between D/G and N fam.

4. Garment Detail

This category is related to the details within the confines of the outline of a garment. So things like necklines, collars, effects like beading and sequins, trim, buttons, etc etc.
https://preview.redd.it/342pwi6y390d1.jpg?width=1971&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=64115f1045c7a3cb6d9ac1d6d843754ca943a603
Shape - sharp vs soft
  • D - “angular shapes” “sharp edges” “clean, angular necklines (plunging v’s, skinny turtlenecks, high Mandarins, slashed collars, halters
)” “anything tailored (crisp cuffs, sharp pleats, sharp lapels, etc.)”
  • R - “soft” “[Sleeves can be] very soft and flowing” “lapels should be curved, rounded, or shawl-collared” “gathers, tucks, or bouffant shapes” “any draped, gathered, or shirred touches are wonderful accents”
  • C - “clean, tailored necklines” “crisp and finished cuffs”
  • N - “Any unconstructed or loosely tailored detail works well.” “Simple necklines
are best, and you should concentrate on open necklines for your air of casual chic” “lapels should be tailored, notched, or clean (lapel-less).” “Cuffs should be very plain.”
  • G - “Detail should always be
sharp” “very crisp, staccato, broken up, and multicolored” “lots of crisp trim” “lots of outlining (collars, cuffs, waistbands, lapels) with piping of contrasting colors or fabric, braiding, beads, etc.” “Small, crisp pleats.” “Sharp, angular necklines - also small” “Small, crisp ties (ribbon, leather, etc.)” “Small, tailored lapels or crisp lapel-less with piping.” “Small, crisp cuffs.”
Scale - large vs small
  • D - “bold, sweeping geometrics”
  • R - “oversize bows, flouncy ruffles, and delicate lace are always good choices”
  • C - “[detail] should never call attention to itself”
  • N - “pleats should be soft and deep” “You can use small touches of hand embroidery or rough lace and eyelet for very simple trim.”
  • G - “Detail should always be small” “Small, crisp pleats.” “Sharp, angular necklines - also small” “Small, crisp ties (ribbon, leather, etc.)” “Small, tailored lapels or crisp lapel-less with piping.” “Small, crisp cuffs”
Complexity - clean vs intricate
  • D - “detail should always be clean and minimal”
  • R - “intricate, ornate
with an emphasis on framing your face” “Sleeves should be tapered at the wrist with intricate buttons” “any kind of sparkle is excellent (pearls, sequins, beading, etc.)” “belt buckles should always be intricate” “the more intricate or antique looking your buttons are the better” “ornate detail” “ornate necklines”
  • C - “clean, simple, and minimal - just enough to add an elegantly understated touch.” “never call attention to itself” “clean lines” “minimal detail” “minimum of detail”
  • N - “detail should be kept minimal. Plain and simple is best for you.” “gathers should be minimal” “simple tailored styles with minimal detail” “Simple shapes with easy fits” “Minimal detail”
  • G - “an overabundance of detail” “You can never wear too much detail! An abundance of it and everywhere in your look is one of the most effective tools you have for capturing your animated effervescence!” “Detail should always
call attention to itself (not blend into the lines of your garments)” “lots of animated and colorful detail” “Collar, cuff, lapel, and waistband detail (outlining, trim, piping, ribbing) are essential”
Some random observations from me about this category
  • A very stark divide here between the families that lean minimal/clean (C, N, D) and the families that lean complex (R, G)!
  • Even though R and G both call for a lot of detail, G fam seems to like it literally everywhere (but especially at the edges) while R focuses on framing the face. Another difference between them is that G detail is high contrast, sharp, and colorful while R fam's detail tends to the ornate, flowing, intricate, and sparkly - very different shapes I think.
  • Finally a category where N fam is not running away with the versatility haha - it seems like a more minimal and clean approach to detail really helps them shine.

5. Color

Y'all know what colors are :)
https://preview.redd.it/5he7hmfk790d1.jpg?width=1949&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=bc59971dc9518bfbd276300feccba5838f4d7971
Number
  • D - “Always think ‘head-to-toe’ with your color schemes” “All monochromatic schemes are excellent”
  • R - “include an artful blending of
 luxurious colors”
  • C - “Make sure colors, textures, and prints blend together” “monochromatic schemes are excellent, although you do not need to be limited to just one or two colors.”
  • N - “Color is an area in which you should have lots of fun! Strive for zip, verve, and lots of pizzazz with bolds, brights, pastels, vivids, and wild color combinations - anything imaginative.” “Break all the rules when it comes to color! Mix ‘n match with ease.”
  • G - “lots of animated and colorful detail can be very exciting to your look” “Your use of color should be bold and sassy; break all the rules here! Multicolored splashes are perfect. Bright and shockingly colored accessories played against a dark or light background. High, sharp contrast and wild color combinations are all very chic on you. Break your line with color!”
Effect
  • D - “color combination should be bold but elegant. Combining bright shades with dark shades achieves this with ease.”
  • R - “should emphasize a watercolor palette of soft pastels and luscious brights.” “rich, luxuriously blended colors” “pale neutrals
 are your best accents”
  • C - “accentuate your smoothly blended visual outline. This means that a mixture of colors in an outfit should blend together in intensity so as not to disrupt your clean and smooth silhouette.” “The key is to make sure the tones (intensities) blend, instead of contrasting.”
  • N - “Strive for zip, verve, and lots of pizzazz with bolds, brights, pastels, vivids, and wild color combinations - anything imaginative. Neutrals work well when they are used in beautifully textured fabrics
but you will feel a little dull without a few bright accents, either in accessories or jewelry.” “Colors can be very wild and unusual if you wish, or more muted and earthy-looking”
  • G - “bold and sassy” “Multicolored splashes” “Bright and shockingly colored accessories played against a dark or light background.” “High, sharp contrast and wild color combinations”
Some random observations from me about this category
  • It's been said before but D fam's inability to do anything but monochrome has been greatly exaggerated. Outfits can have high contrast colors as long as they still read bold and sleek!
  • I found it interesting that both C fam and R fam call for a blended effect.
  • Color seems like a key category to focus on for both N fam and G fam - bold color kings/queens 👑

6. Accessories

The category for everything else - bags, hats, shoes, jewelry, belts, etc etc.
https://preview.redd.it/ek7fu7oz790d1.jpg?width=1923&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=7c24f3db63656cef4a8da916665ba0f19893cc86
Scale
  • D - “Belts should be bold and wide” “Metal belts will be sculpted and quite large.” “[Hats should have] wide brims” “[Jewelry should have] an emphasis on bold, modern shapes.” “[For jewelry,] Pieces should be large but not overly bulky.”
  • R - “The effect may be lavish, but the workmanship should be intricate and delicate.” “delicate [shoes]” “[For bags,] Delicate shoulder straps. Elegantly slim briefcases.” “Jewelry should always be delicate and lavish, with intricate and ornate touches. Rounded shapes, curves, swirls, and lots of dangles”
  • C - “slender pumps” “narrow heels” “moderate size [bags]” “slim and elegant” “keep [belts] elegant, slim, and narrow with small smooth buckles” “small and crisp [hats] with even brims” “Small [jewelry]”
  • N - “moderate-sized [bags]” “Jewelry should be kept on the chunky side” “It is possible to get away with very minimal chains, tiny diamond studs, etc., but chances are you won’t be satisfied with this once you experiment with a zippier look!”
  • G - “All accessories should be small, crisp, geometric, and colorful” “Small, crisp geometrics [for bags]” “[Belts] may be narrow to moderately wide.” “Small, crisply tailored hats.” “Jewelry should be small and sharp.”
Shape
  • D - “All accessories should be crisp, sharply tailored, and angular with geometric shapes. Keep everything sleek and contemporary in feeling.” “High, straight heels, crisp soles, and elegantly tapering toes.” “Angular envelopes, clutches, or structured briefcases.” “[For jewelry,] thin sharp pieces are good choices, as are avant-garde works of art.”
  • R - “softly sophisticated.” “[Shoes of] Lightweight and supple leather.” “[For bags,] small, rounded shapes. Soft, supple leather or fabric.” [For belts,] soft and supple leather or fabric.” “Soft, curvy [hats]” “Large, fluffy fur hats.”
  • C - “elegant scarves in symmetrical ties” “tapered toes” “elegant leather” “softly tailored flats” “crisply tailored [bags]” “supple leather [bags]” “tailored, symmetrical shape[d hats]” “Keep your jewelry elegant, smooth, and symmetrical” “Small, slightly geometric shapes [in jewelry] are good, as are smoothly curved swirls.”
  • N - “Unconstructed styles with soft or rounded-edged geometric shapes are most effective.” “high heels should be very angular and straight, not tapered” “unconstructed pouches” “Simple geometrics in supple leather” “softly geometric [belts]” “unconstructed [hats]. Large, loose, and floppy. Shaggy-haired fur.” “Soft or rounded-edged geometrics [for jewelry]”
  • G - “All accessories should be small, crisp, geometric, and colorful” “tailored and angular [shoes] in lightweight leather. Unusual shapes in toes and heels are excellent (asymmetrics, wedges, sharp points, etc.) as are bold colors and printed fabric.” “Small, crisp geometrics [for bags]” “Stiff leather [belts] with geometric buckles.” “Jewelry should be small and sharp and in geometric, asymmetrical, or irregular shapes.”
Detail
  • D - “sleek & elegant”
  • R - “ornate” “strappy, slender-heeled [shoes] with tapered or open toes” “[Flats] with ornamentation” “[For bags,] Ornamentation or luxurious detail (beads, gathers, trim).” “[For belts,] All beaded, bejeweled, or sparkly styles are excellent.” “belts are a focal point, and should be selected as carefully as a fine piece of jewelry” “Jewelry should always be delicate and lavish, with intricate and ornate touches. Rounded shapes, curves, swirls, and lots of dangles
 sparkly materials are essential
and an antique, baroque, or rococo effect is desirable.”
  • C - “simple, clean, and elegant” “Be careful not to overdo! Go elegant instead of extreme.”
  • N - “Accessories should be kept minimal; plain and simple is your best look here” “evening sandals should be very bare, not strappy” “belts should be simple” “[For jewelry, think] “wearable art”... or it can be bright and funky costume pieces that add pizzazz! Earthy materials are very elegant and sophisticated on you (copper, silver, amber, turquoise, etc.). Hard-finished enamels and glass are fun, especially when used in bold colors for vivid accents”
  • G - “[Accessories] should call attention to themselves as detail” “Contrast is being strived for with your use of accessories, as well as bringing out your wit and a sense of fun.” “[For shoes] bold colors and printed fabric. Flats of all kinds should always be funky and fun (patent leather, trimmed, etc.)” “Brightly colored belts are excellent aids in breaking your line.” “[For jewelry] Brightly colored enamel, stone, or glass are best. Very contemporary avant-garde pieces are excellent on you, as are trendy pieces that accentuate your wit.”
Some random observations from me about this category
  • In keeping with the general themes, D fam again shines more with much bolder or larger scale accessories than everyone else, although they don't need a ton of detail within them. The overall shape seems to do most of the heavy lifting.
  • In contrast, G fam and R fam once again call for a lot of detail within their accessories. They also get the most fun-sounding shoes (to me, a magpie).
  • And again N, C, and D have the cleaner strategies for accessories, although N does have a more G-like approach recommended for fun colorful jewelry.

Feel free to drop any observations/thoughts you might have in the comments, I'm curious what everyone else sees or thinks is notable or interesting!

2024.05.13 15:05 nomass39 I found an old recording of the most gruesome TV show ever broadcast

Me and Lila always carved dozens of jack o’ lanterns every October, so they’d absolutely saturate our lawn on Halloween night. It was our thing. But looking back on it, now that I’ve lost her, I just feel bad for the pumpkins. I almost relate to them, somehow. The way they were carved up, had everything of substance inside of them torn out, and left as hollow, rotting shells with forced smiles.
Needless to say, I didn’t cope with her death well. I didn’t want to cope with it. I wanted the world to drown in the black sludge of my grief. I loathed the people I saw going about their lives, unaware that the world had already ended the moment Lila died. The Earth shouldn’t keep spinning. Life shouldn’t go on. Not without her.
Even my relatives bringing me along on a trip to Kauai only made it worse. The most gorgeous place on Earth, and it made me sick with hatred. Nothing that beautiful deserved to exist if Lila wasn’t ever going to get to see it. It wasn’t fair.
I thought I’d never enjoy or care about anything again. Then I discovered media preservation.
It started with taking some of Lila’s old VHS tapes to a video repair place to fix some issues with the footage before it’s digitized. The job fascinated me. In a universe based on entropy, where everything inevitably fades away and is forgotten
restoring something lost is like snatching it from the jaws of death, right? Like flipping the bird to the universe and its so-called ‘natural order’. People die, but information doesn’t have to.
Now, it doesn’t matter how small — be it some god-awful plug-and-play licensed game, or a cereal commercial from 80’s — it’s my mission to recover it in as high a quality as I’m able, and make sure it’s freely available online for as long as possible.
A couple weeks ago, I came across a big haul. Four boxes of old VHS tapes offered up on E-Bay for dirt cheap. Most of the tapes were just recordings of Cheers episodes already preserved in higher qualities, but one Maxell E-240 caught my interest.
First of all, I’d never seen one so melted. Sure, sometimes they were left in an attic too long, and the colors and audio start to degrade. But this one looked like it had survived a house fire. It was covered in soot and the smell of smoke, and had the overall shape of a chocolate bar left out in the sun a little too long.
Second was the label, which read in neat sharpie: ᮇᮘÉȘꜱᎏᎅᎇ 4,679,329 ᎍᎀʀ 8 2035.
The casing was so disfigured, I had to bust it apart just pull out the tapes and respool them in a fresh cassette. I tried to iron out the creases in the tape as best I could, but I had no illusions about it accomplishing much — the mylar surface had been irreparably warped in places by whatever fire had half-melted the thing.
Imagine my despair at the sight of that dreaded ‘ɮᮏ ꜱÉȘÉąÉŽáŽ€ÊŸâ€™. I could clearly see the tape wasn’t blank, yet no amount of adjusting the tracking or trying different TVs or VCRs accomplished anything. Just as I was about to give up, though, the thing just suddenly started playing properly at the exact instant the clock struck 3 AM, as if it had only now decided to work. My all-nighter had paid off.
I didn’t dwell on the fact that this ‘miracle fix’ had been impossible. If I’d had any sense, I’d have torn the horrid thing out of my VCR and buried it beneath holy ground. Instead, fool I was, I sat down and watched.
At first, the thing seemed unwatchable. The audio was so distorted that the show’s theme song emerged as a low, crackling, staticky wail that made my head throb, and the logo was completely indistinguishable through the flickering and interference. I thought it was a lost cause for a moment. But then a figure appeared and cleared away the static, like Moses parting the Red Sea.
It was the sight of the show’s host that hooked me. He was just
perfect. Perfect in every way. I knew it just looking at him. Infinitely handsome and likable and charismatic, and he always said the exact perfect thing. The only issue is, I don’t remember a single thing about him now, in the same way you can’t remember a dream that seemed so clear to you while you were experiencing it. He just appears in my memory as this abstract blur in a sharp suit. Yet at the time, I was awestruck, even before he said a single word.
I can’t even remember a word he said. It was like he was speaking another language, one I felt as opposed to heard. I’ll try and transcribe it as best I can into words, but know that it’s only a pathetic imitation.
“... for another night of laughs, prizes, and fun for the whole family, with your host, #####!” I noticed that the audio and visual distortion seemed to suddenly intensify the instant he said his name, rendering it completely illegible. Idiot I was, I figured that was a coincidence. “Tonight is a night of celebration, folks, because thanks to the support of loyal viewers like you, we have just been approved for, get this: two hundred thousand more seasons!”
The “live studio audience” went wild with applause. I put that in scare quotes because, as far as I could tell, besides the host, the studio seemed completely empty. As if he was standing on a plain white stage that extended outwards into infinite darkness on all sides.
“For those just joining us, the game here is simple
” He explained that this was some sort of a trivia show. Every time a guest got an answer wrong, it brought them a little closer to some sort of unspecified ‘punishment’. And if they got it right? He smirked. “Well, they get to delay the inevitable.”
I wondered what he meant by ‘inevitable’. I didn’t have to wonder long.
The host gestured to a curtain that hadn’t been there moments ago, which raised to reveal a middle-aged man. You know the type — bushy mustache, gray hair, round-rimmed glasses. Kind of guy you’d have doing your plumbing. He couldn’t look any more out of place stood up and restrained in that — what the hell is that?
I recognized that metal coffin-looking thing from a medieval torture museum I went to once. The iron maiden. The lid hung open, countless long, needle-like blades poking inwards, threaten to poke a million new holes in him if it was shut.
His situation was not lost on him. “Where
where am I? What the hell is this!?”
“Oh, lucky guess!” The host ‘joked’. More canned laughter. “I know you always loved watching those trivia shows, Malcolm? Weren’t you always sitting there, grinding your teeth, seething that it wasn’t fair? That you should be the one up on stage, winning big?”
The man paused. Even he seemed mesmerized by the unreal perfection of the host before him. “I
 this is a
 game show?”
“All you have to do is answer a few questions! Think you can handle that, Malcolm?” He pulled out a cue card without waiting for an answer. “And our first question! What were you doing the night of February 18th, 1998?”
The man seemed baffled. “Just
sat on my couch watching the NFL, I think? I’m not sure how I’m supposed to remember —“
He let out a startled squeal as a horrid buzzer sounded. On cue, the lid slid a third of the way closed, making him flinch. “Oooh, I’m afraid that’s the wrong answer, Frank! But you know what? I’ll give you one more chance. What were you —“
“Following a girl home!” The man cried out. “F-from the bar. There, are you happy?”
“Cor-rect!” The canned audience began cheering! “Such honesty! Now, our second question: just what were you carrying while you followed her?”
He hesitated for a little too long. And then the buzzer sounded again, and the lid slid so near to closing that its blades began poking uncomfortably against his skin. He tried to press himself against the back of the maiden as well as his restraints would allow. “Jesus! Okay! A knife, a knife!”
“Awww, if only you’d said that just a second earlier!” Another big question. “Our third question: why, Malcolm? Why did you do it?”
That set Malcolm off. He started thrashing, clawing, screaming. “Let me out of this thing, you maniac! You can’t do this to me! Do you know who I am? Is this some sort of sick joke? My lawyers will have your head for this, you—“
And then the buzzer. All of a sudden, the lid slammed shut full-force, and the man was utterly silenced save for an unnatural, drawn-out wheeze. “Another wrong answer, Malcolm! I’m afraid I was looking for: ‘because if I can’t have her, no one can’!”
I admit it. I laughed. Out of shock more than anything. How was this allowed on TV? I took it as some sort of dark comedy show, and it was kind of satisfying to see that freaky character get his comeuppance. Still, there was something unnerving to me, seeing the man’s eyes through the openings in the maiden. Wide and red and terrified. They just looked a little
 too real.
But the maiden disappeared as quickly as it came, before I could dwell on it too much. “Oh, envy! Definitely one of my favorite sins.” More laughter. “Stay tuned, folks! We’ve still got a night of fun and games in store for you! But first
how’s about a word from our sponsors?”
Cut to a corporate logo which I again couldn't recognize.
“This segment was made possible by Buer Health, which has recently announced a brilliant new initiative to protect our citizens from skin cancer by removing their skin completely.”
The camera cut to a massive industrial building, resembling a solid concrete cube around 50 meters in width and height. Its surface bore arcane symbols etched using carvings of wailing, tormented faces. The host would occasionally be rendered inaudible by a deafening metallic scraping from within, though he didn’t seem to notice. The only protrusion from the building’s cubic shape was a single smokestack, belching a scarlet red smoke into the atmosphere. A queue of gaunt figures waited at the entrance, herded and coerced by their grim overseers, and there were no words to describe the procession of scarlet ghouls limping out the building’s other end.
“Owing to the nonlinearity of time, the brand new Grand Skinpeeling Machine has spontaneously appeared several years before construction deadlines, and indeed, before it was even conceived of by anyone in our timeline. People have rushed all the way from Malebolge just to try this miracle of technology out on opening day, and so far, the reviews have been stellar!”
He shoved his microphone in the face of a shambling thing that could only scarcely be called a human. Tatters of flesh clung to its exposed musculature, blowing in the wind. Its eyes were the only hint of color in that sea of bloody red, and they were wide, white and terrified. The thing screamed and wailed for as long as it could before the last tendons connecting its jaw to its face snapped, and it was left to choke and gurgle.
“An amazing wail! The results speak for themselves, folks. The Grand Skinpeeling Machine is a hit!”
So far, I was still laughing along and having a good time. The sight of the next ‘guest’, however, started making me nervous.
It was an old lady.
She couldn’t be a day younger than sixty, the sort of sweet elderly woman who in a just world would be cooking chocolate chip cookies for her grandchildren in a comfy cottage somewhere. But here she was, tied to a metal chair, eyes wide, shaking like a leaf. Unlike the last contestant, she seemed to know exactly what was happening.
“In exchange for our loving endorsement, they’ve agreed to loan us one of their star employees. Ladies and gentlemen, put your hands together for: the Liqisma!”
Something slunk from the darkness far behind her — or perhaps it’d be more apt to say that the darkness birthed it whole-cloth. It was like a living shadow, and it took my eyes a moment to register what I was even seeing.
How do I even begin describing this creature? I could say it looked almost human, or at least like something that may have been human long ago. Or I could start with its skin, which was all black and shiny as latex and seemingly smooth on first glance, but if you looked closer you’d realize it was covered in a million tiny reptilian scales, almost like a shark. Its head was a bald man’s, utterly devoid of any distinguishing features, like the basic stock template for a human being. It was notable only for a complete lack of pupils and irises, its eyes a pure white.
Its body defied basic biology in so many key ways, I had to stare it at for what felt like an eternity just to wrap my mind around its physiology. It was at least five or six meters long, by my estimate, composed of multiple human torsos stacked one on top of the other like segments of a centipede, each melding with the ones around it at the waist and shoulders. Each torso sported a pair of short, stubby arms that propelled it with terrifying grace. It ended with a pair of human legs, perpetually bent on their knees, beneath a ‘tail’ that looked more like its coccyx was poking free from its body.
The old last could clearly hear it, and kept futilely trying to turn her head around enough to get a peek at what stood behind her. I mouthed uselessly, don’t. You don’t want to know.
“Glad you could join us again, Miss Wethersby! Judging by our ratings last week, you seemed to have been a fan favorite!”
Her voice was so soft, I could barely hear it below the static. “Oh, God. Please, why won’t you people let me go? I’ve told you, I’ve never done anything, never hurt anybody. There must be some sort of—”
He waved a hand over her, and it seemed to forcefully snap her mouth shut. “Please, Miss Wethersby, save your breath for our questions!” Another cue card. “Your first question, my friend: where did you and your husband buy your first home?”
She had to think about it for a long time. Eventually, she cried out, “Alabama! Tuscaloosa, Alabama!”
“Ding ding ding! Why, you’re already doing better than our first contestant! Next question: what breed of dog was your childhood pet?”
She had a pained look on her face as she thought. Eventually, a timer started ticking down. It wasn’t visible, so it wasn’t clear how much time she had left exactly, but the sound it made got more shrill and high-pitched with every second. “Miss Wethersby, need I remind you that we have a time limit on this show?”
A tear ran down her cheek. “I
I keep telling you people, I don’t know. I have dementia, I can’t remember, please—”
That buzzer again. “I’m afraid that was the wrong answer! Liqisma?” The old lady shuddered at the sounds of hundreds of feet drawing a little closer to her. “Now, your first grandchild. What did he look like? What color were his eyes? His hair?”
She was crying harder now, like it hurt her that she couldn’t remember something so dear to her. “I told you I can’t remember! Why are you doing this to me!?”
“If you don’t remember them, why would they remember you?” The host mocked as the buzzer sounded, and the beast drew a little closer. “Really, do you believe they still even think about you? Or do you think they’re glad that the old bag of bones isn’t there sucking up their inheritance?”
This went on for
God, it could have been an hour. I was glued to the screen all the while, frozen with terror, praying for this nightmare to just end, for her to make it out okay somehow. He poured over every little detail of the life she lived and the people she loved, delighting in how little of it she could still recall.
And the thing grew closer, and closer
until she finally felt multiple pairs of hands resting upon her shoulders. The thing was looming over her now, and a long, black tongue a few feet in length emerged from its mouth and ran trails of dark saliva over the back of her head. She looked broken down, eyes raw from crying, and I could tell by the dampness of her dress that she’d wet herself.
“Now, Miss Wethersby, our time here has been fun, but I do believe it is time for our final question. Tell me, what is the name
 of your only son?”
She couldn’t even answer anymore. She just stared ahead, like her mind was a million miles away. He cackled as the buzzer sounded one final time, and threw his cue cards aside. “Thank you for playing, Miss Wethersby. Better luck next time.”
I would say the thing unhinged its jaw like a snake, but that’d be an understatement. The way the thing’s face malformed and wrinkled and stretched as it opened its maw, it no longer looked even remotely human. Its jaws must have parted at least thirty centimeters apart, revealing a second, pharyngeal pair of jaws that lashed out and gripped the woman’s skull, pulling her headlong into that darkness.
I could hear bones crunching and snapping as its throat constricted down around her body, peristaltic muscles compacting her into a meat slurry, bit by bit. Yet she just wouldn’t die. Even as her skull and upper body were already crushed and compacted, organs and muscles pressed into mulch, she still kicked her legs, twitched her fingers, let out a gurgling that must have been some attempt at screaming. She was squirming even as the beast snapped its jaw shut around the last of her, condemning her to whatever torments awaited her inside the creature.
And all the while, that horrible laughter. “Don’t worry, folks! She’ll be back next week! And the next. And the next
”
Needless to say, I wasn’t having fun anymore. In fact, I had to turn away and fight the urge to throw up. I stood, about to turn the TV off and —
“Ah, ah, ah! Don’t touch that dial, now!” I froze. There was something chilling about the way he said that, staring right into the screen as if reacting to what I was doing. I hated that grin on his face. “The real show is just beginning.”
And with the barely restrained excitement of a child on Christmas morning, he yanked back another curtain, and I recognized everything.
I recognized that crappy bootleg knockoff Always Sunny in Philadelphia jacket that was so gaudy and terrible it instantly became her favorite thing in her wardrobe. I recognized those subtle hints of slight acne she disguised as fake freckles. I recognized the way her gray eyes would remind me of those overcast mornings at the beach at Hilton Head and pointing out all the cannonball jellyfish washed up on the sands. I recognized that tattoo of the name ʀᎏᎄᎋʏ, how I’d held her all night long as she cried into my shirt after her childhood cat had died.
It was Lila.
I shuddered, gasped, fell from my seat as if I’d been punched in the stomach and the air had been knocked out of me. I couldn’t breathe. This couldn’t be real. I was dreaming right now. I must be. I just had to wake up.
But I couldn’t wake up. Nothing I could do dispelled the sight of her curled up in that
that thing. That bronze statue of a bull, horns jutting on either side of a head that roaring silently up at the heavens, all while the love of my life was locked in its hollowed out belly, visible only through a pane of glass. I could hear her cry out in shock at where she’d found herself, and every whimper felt like it drove a knife through my chest.
The host soaked in the moment. It was ecstasy for him, the suffering of it all. He stared dead into the camera like he was looking right at me as she called, “What is this? Where am I?”
“Why, I have good news, my dear Lila! You’re exactly where every American dreams of being: you’re on TV.” He pointed to the camera. “And we have a very special guest in the audience tonight. Your very own beloved Jackson!”
I shuddered, hearing my own name ooze from his fetid lips. His façade of perfection was slipping, and there was something so profoundly ugly beneath it. Her eyes snapped to the camera, confused, despairing. “Jackson? Baby? What — what’s happening? What is this?”
I don’t know, I thought, gripping the sides of the TV so hard my knuckles turned white, but I’m going to get you out of there, baby. I’m going to find whoever did this and I’m going to bury them all so far beneath that studio that they’ll never-
“I’m afraid Jackson hasn’t joined us quite yet, my dear. But if you truly love him, surely you’ll give him a show to remember, won’t you?” He taunted her. “All I want, after all, is to ask you a few questions! In fact, I’ll offer you a special deal: get even a single answer right, and I’ll let you go free! But get one wrong and, well
”
On cue, a fire was lit beneath her. Small, smoldering for now, but she whimpered as she noticed the heat. We both realized in that instant what this was. By now, I was screaming things I can’t repeat here, and slamming my hands against the TV screen as if I could reach through and save her.
She bit her lip and acquiesced. Not like she had any room to argue. The host grinned and readied a cue card. “Your first question: where are you, Lila?”
“I
I don’t know. How am I supposed to know?”
“You do know, Lila. You know exactly where you are.” He smirked at her. “Here’s a free hint: what’s the last thing you remember, before you woke up here?
She thought about it
and choked back a sob, visibly shaking as the realization slowly settled in. “But
 but why? I
 I
”
The horrible wail of the buzzer cut her off. “Oooh, too bad! I’m afraid you’ve run out of time!”
Seemingly as if on its own, the fire doubled in size. Sparks licked the belly of the bronze bull, and began to ever-so-slowly heat the surface. She pawed around in the tight confines, searching for any reprieve from the scalding heat all around her as the metal grew hot like it’d been left out in the sun on a summer’s day. “Please! Oh, God, let me out of this thing! It hurts! It hurts!”
The host seemed to breathe in her pain as if stealing a moment’s indulgence. “Now that there is no doubt about where you are, my dear, let us proceed to the second question.” He switched to his next card. “Did you believe in God, in the end?”
“O-of course!” She pled her case as if she was being tried in court. “My entire life
every day I gave to the poor, helped the sick, did whatever I could to honor Hi-“
“I’m afraid you misunderstood my question. I asked, did you believe in him at the end? The very moment your pitiful little life was snuffed out?”
“I always believed! I’d never forsake Him!”
“Yes, yes, I know. You lived a good and holy life, didn’t you?” He cackled. “But what of the very end? You and your little husband were so excited to deliver your first little baby boy. But o, tragedy! It all went wrong, didn’t it? Your precious little boy didn’t make it through childbirth
 and you followed closely behind.”
“That whole business with the botched pregnancy, it was
what do you call it? Ah, yes. A ‘test of faith’. And I’m afraid you failed. In your final moments, you watched the light fade from your child’s eyes, and you assumed — wisely, in my humble opinion — that no ‘kind’ and ‘loving’ God would allow something like that to happen.” He laughed. “Funny how after a lifetime of dutiful service, all it takes is one little mistake at the end
to bring you here. To us.”
I’d never seen such depths of despair in a person’s eyes. Such emptiness. Like with every word, he’d been scooping out another piece of her until she was hollow. And then that buzzer roared again, more shrill than ever, and I could barely see her little window through the smoke and flames. The belly of the bull was turning orange in places, and I could hear her flesh start to sizzle like meat on a grill. There are no words for the noises she made. No words at all.
“And our last, final question,” he continued. “What were your last words to your poor, beloved Jackson?”
“I love you!” I called out the answer. Bloody fingerprints stained the TV screen from my slamming my hands against it, as I screamed the answer over and over. “I love you, I love you, I love you!” At some point, I forgot that there was ever a question. I was just screaming it at her as if hoping that she could hear it, that it could bring her a modicum of comfort in that place.
The buzzer sounded again. I couldn't bring myself to look. All I could hear was the roaring of the bull, and the steam rising from its bronze nostrils.
The curtain fell. Silence drowned the sound. The host dropped all pretense that he hadn’t been speaking directly to me. “Now, Jackson. You just might be one of my new favorite audience members this show had ever had. I know this must have been hard for you. But if you’ll just stay tuned, I have one more show I know you’re certain to love!”
I didn’t bother to touch the remote. After all, nothing could be worse than what I’d just seen, right?
Wrong. Horror wracked me as the curtain rose, and I saw the man chained to a chair. I pulled away like a caveman witnessing fire, cringing and stuttering, face wet with sweat. It was the sort of fear that worked its way into your bones like a bad chill, that left you shaking, teeth chattering.
It was me.
An older me, sure. But not by much. Ten years, maybe. A gaunt and hollow version of me, one twisted by ten years of depression and hard drugs. But it was unmistakable.
His eyes widened as he recognized the host. “Oh — oh God, God please no! It can’t be — oh Christ, let me out of this chair, you —“
“Come, now! We wouldn’t want to use the lord’s name in vain, would we? I mean, that would be a sin!” The host laid a hand on the other me’s shoulder. “It may have been a few years since you watched our program, but I’m sure you remember the rules, don’t you, old friend?”
The other me was wordless, on the verge of hyperventilating, just as I was. The host was giddy with delight. “Now! Our first and only question is one I’m sure our viewer will be very interested in: what sins, exactly, do you think landed you here?”
The other me tried to speak, but the words caught in his throat. I could see it in his eyes. The years of self-destruction, the bitter hopelessness, the whirlpool of nihilism and vice and decay. The suffocating depths of a man. The darkness. How could he put it into words?
The sound of the buzzer was like a pig’s squeal. “Mmm, I’m afraid that our viewer is going to have to figure that out for himself! In the meantime, your punishment? Well, we wouldn’t want to spoil anything
”
The curtains slowly began to fall just as a couple other of those black, grotesque monstrosities emerged from the darkness. The curtain covered them all before I could get a good look at their obscene, twisted, asymmetrical figures. All I could hear was the crunching, the sound of skin tearing like paper, the screaming that went on for longer and louder than a human throat or vocal chords could endure.
The image and audio were beginning to distort, glitch, burn away. The tapes were physically melting as they played. My VCR was starting to overheat, sparks pouring from its front panel. The host voice jumped around in tone, his voice fading into the static blur as the tapes bubbled and boiled and distorted. “But, my friends, I’m afraid that concludes tonight’s episode of our show! So, with a final farewell to our dear, beloved viewer, Jackson
”
Just before the image melted away, the camera seemed to jump forward until his face filled the screen, his eyes piercing into mine as he cackled in that singsong voice.
“See you sooooon~”

Natsumi Without Costume - DAL vol 9 cover + some illustrations review
Hello guys, since I read Date a Live, I realized that the novel has a certain quality that even more popular and cult novels do not have and that seems to go unnoticed by the fandom, the covers. Yes, the covers are spectacular and break away from the standard of most LNs, there is not just fanservice, there is not just a character striking a cool pose, we actually have covers with a certain visual narrative, whether a connection with the highlighted spirit itself or with the story itself and I will be pleased to show this to you, here are the rules:
  • Due to the oriental reading sense being left -> right of the page, the details will be presented respecting this sense.
  • A picture is worth a thousand words, and DAL is a novel so the images are even more valuable, the idea here is to analyze the covers and relevant illustrations to understand hints, references, foreshadowing, and contexts.
  • Pure fanservice images will not be taken into consideration (at least most of them). No, I’m not the type of otaku who says things like: “fanservice is unnecessary, objectification of women, too gratuitous and empty, it only serves to “excite the viewer””, the last one is even plausible and I understand those who think like this, but all the others are nothing more than cheap demagoguery. They will not be taken into consideration because in addition to not actually adding to the plot most of them are posted to exhaustion on this reddit.
  • Major spoilers will be avoided, at least directly.

  • Change Natsumi
So that the reader has no doubts that the highlighted girl is Natsumi, the first element is precisely the subtitle and the spirit info.
The title also refers to Natsumi’s power, which, as in the previous volume, will be an important point in the plot.
  • Spirit Info
Same sephirot, same codename, same angel, these things have not changed.
  • The title
The composition of the characters is the same as the previous volume with one exception, the character corresponding to “A” is next to the characters corresponding to “Live” on the right end of the cover, while the characters corresponding to “Date” are on the left end of the cover.
  • The Highlighted Girl.
Finally, gentlemen, this is the real Natsumi, the color palette remains the same, the theme of the astral dress too, but they are almost completely different people, goodbye adult beauty, the sensual curves also went away, another element that draws attention to her is the hair that is very disheveled and has a more opaque color, that naturally sensual face also went and she is not happy to be seen and judged by the reader (although her expression is funny).
It is really a shock that such a beautiful and sensual woman is actually this little girl but there were hints all the time that this was not the real appearance, she had a childish personality from the beginning and showed certain insecurity all the time.
And speaking of insecurity, let’s go to the main point of the cover, the astral dress that despite the changes and the lack of symmetry in some places (clear indication of imbalance), continues with the same colors and the same theme.
Let’s compare her astral dress with Yoshino’s, which in the volume 2 review I say is the most discreet, this is due to the colors that are less flashy, the hood that covers a great part of her face and her blue hair and her clothes have no sexual appeal at all.
Totally different from Natsumi, her astral dress has a lot of orange, a color that is naturally flashy that aligned with her green hair forms a combination that would make it difficult to ignore, the hat does not cover any of her hair and much less of the face, in fact there is a lot of green and orange in the hat too. Her clothes show a lot of skin. Although Natsumi is clearly a person with a great inferiority complex, it is clear that even in her real form she wants to draw attention, she wants to be noticed.
  • Background
The background has abandoned the transversal strip, this time it is a large horizontal strip (larger than the previous ones we saw in volumes 1, 6 and 7).
The change is due because the girl is the real Natsumi and due to us knowing this the fantasy of the previous volume lost its usefulness, forcing Natsumi to also lose her duality.
As for the scenario, it is a simple bluish sky, but, what is that? There is more than one and they seem to be

lollipops? Ara, ara, more hints and you know very well which character is related to lollipops.
{Illustration 3}

Shiori Itsuka return for this volume and in her left hand you can see some brushes, she is saying: “This is definitely you, Natsumi.” Natsumi seems to be astounded to see her own reflection.
Just an indication that a good part of the volume will focus on helping Natsumi overcome her inferiority complex.
{Illustration 4}

Clearly, Kotori is making a reference to the cover of volume 4 and much of what I said there applies here, especially regarding her self-confidence.
The commander of Fraxinus and sister (or girlfriend?) of Shido, Kotori Itsuka is saying her tredemarked phrase:
“Let’s start the war.”
Kotori is with her limited astral dress, although it matches very well with her commander uniform.
Since the previous volume, the visual narrative makes a kind of correction between Kotori and Natsumi and probably this is due to two reasons. First point, Kotori is very confident while Natsumi tends to always be belittling herself, the second point is that Natsumi will disguise herself as Kotori at a moment in this volume and will mention that imitating Kotori “It’s hard because she is such a confident girl who wears twin tale.”

As usual, there is the table of contents that follows the pattern of being a punch in the face.
Here we have the Ratatoskr analyst - Reine Murasame, in casual clothes and glasses and without footwear (probably she is inside a house) saying:
“
Mother, right?”
I will just say that mother has everything to do with some characters in this work and this includes Natsumi, let’s go straight to the narration of volume 9.

Natsumi is in trouble.
To contextualize the scene, Natsumi had just used Haniel to transform Ellen and her troop into children, here in the novel it is detailed how much this affects the fighting capacity but Ellen is THE STRONGEST WIZARD IN THE WORLD, even being a child she manages to defeat the distracted Natsumi, a complete spirit in a single blow.
Natsumi’s luck is that Ellen missed the vital points. Ellen returns to normal, suggests taking Natsumi alive but quartered, she does not want to give Natsumi a chance to use Haniel again.
But soon Shido’s children arrive and save Natsumi, But if Ellen was there how did some loli spirits with limited powers manage? Simple, this time they have a new reinforcement, they have Miku, the definitive support, thanks to her the girls manage to overcome the limitation of childhood.
But what makes Miku the MVP of this fight is that she uses her ability to control Ellen’s allies thus creating the perfect opportunity for them to escape from there with Natsumi.
And you there calling Miku the “weakest spirit”, how many spirits can be proud of having “defeated” THE STRONGEST WIZARD IN THE WORLD?

You are not on waifuswithguns.
After returning to normal size, Origami noticed that there are suspicious people wanting to enter her apartment. There is a small chase until finally these people surround Origami, she receives a call from Ellen, THE STRONGEST WIZARD IN THE WORLD wants Sergeant Major Tobiichi to be the new “Adeptus 2”, at first Origami refuses to enter “an organization that would harm Shido” but Miss Matthers knows how to negotiate:
“What a pity, if they catch you now you will lose the chance to have a balanced fight against the spirits.”
Ellen promised CR-units of the highest quality and technology from DEM and also promised a detailed report on various spiritual readings from a certain event in Tenguu-Nankou five years ago.
An irresistible offer.
“Welcome to DEM industries”
It is worth highlighting something important in the illustration, now Origami has thighs.

I really hope this massage doesn’t have a happy ending.
The reason this illustration is here is that a different approach was chosen, instead of a simple date with Shido Natsumi will have her princess day, skincare and massage with Miku, hair salon with the Yamai sisters, trying on clothes, in this last one not only Tohka and Yoshino are present in the scene, the previous girls were also there and finally, makeup with Shiori, a-ha, so that’s why that colored illustration was present in the preface.
The idea here is to show Natsumi that she can change, become beautiful, without needing Haniel.
Natsumi looks at herself in the mirror and thinks that this girl she is seeing now is beautiful.
{Mono illustration 8}
https://preview.redd.it/w7t1rgmxp00d1.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=18dae79e8a65afe84e8346a22313932e7499dad8
I really don’t like this scene but here in the novel it yielded a good interaction.
In the context of the scene, as Natsumi managed to escape from the underground installation of Ratatoskr Shido had nothing more to do there and decided to go home, arriving there the door was already open, he did not come face to face with a thief, it was something, worse it was Ellen.
Ellen begins to make some indirect threats and emanate an intimidating aura, in a way this scene shows that Miss Matthers is not a common human.
THE STRONGEST WIZARD IN THE WORLD states that Shido and the spirits live in peace not because of Ratatoskr but because of her and Ike’s whim and offers a truce, just deliver Witch and she will ensure that the other spirits continue to live peacefully and calls this “simple math.”
Shido says a catchphrase that is absolute cinema; “I’ve always been bad at math.” The problem is that Ellen threatens Shido with the laser blade and retorts with another cringe phrase that I refuse to write here.
{Mono Illustration 9}
https://preview.redd.it/893tnc40q00d1.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5d7e3fc81f385d70030f491dd94443acd5fc6108
A beautiful illustration of Natsumi using a Haniel ability.
Kaleidoscope is a very comprehensive ability, it allows to change the shape of the target, whether it is alive or not and if used in Haniel itself can temporarily transform it into another angel, here she transforms Haniel into Sandalphon, now I understand why on the cover of volume 7 the sky was night.
After Shido runs all over Tenguu to call Natsumi because there is an imminent danger threatening the city, finally the spirit codenamed witch is touched by the concern, she was disguised as a lollipop all the time with Shido and decides to help destroy the artificial satellite loaded with bombs, first she transforms it into a huge teddy and then gives the last blow with Halvanhelev.
{Mono Illustration 10}
https://preview.redd.it/46vh1y86q00d1.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1feed1dc77bf038b05a6d67f9c870b83a8512143
But there was still a third Humpty Dumpty.
30 minutes later another ship with explosives falls in Tenguu, this time everyone is tired and Natsumi sealed and now what?
Suddenly a wizard from DEM appears, despite seeming to be Ellen it was actually Origami Tobiichi, which leaves Shido quite upset.
In general, high-level wizards receive customized equipment, with colors that match their user, but Origami’s Mordred resembles in color and design with Ellen’s Pendragon.
-Mini review of the volume.
This volume is fun but less than the previous one, this is due to the beginning being quite complicated with those loli jokes that, are not bad, just do not have the same fun after the first time.
However, when Natsumi is saved there is a clear improvement in the reading rhythm, this occurs because Tachibana himself says that he enjoys writing Natsumi and consequently it is fun to read Natsumi, she is so negative about herself that it is sad and funny at the same time.
The fact that we do not have a date with Natsumi contributes to seeing more interactions of her with the other spirits, in addition to a great reuse of characters this also builds a great scene pages later where Natsumi disguises herself as Kotori to test the other girls, at the moment she speaks ill of Natsumi, Tohka and the others at first get angry “I really enjoyed being with Natsumi.” And then they start to find Kotori strange.
I really don’t like the scene of Shido and Ellen, the only purpose of her being there is that Natsumi disguised herself as a lollipop and is in Shido’s pocket, Ellen’s proposal was precisely about delivering Natsumi, which obviously Shido would never do.
The biggest reason I don’t like this scene is that there are better things that Ellen should be doing, there is a subplot of the conspiracy in DEM, some people are dissatisfied with Sir Isaac’s actions and plan to kill him by sweeping an entire city off the map as an alibi, an unfortunate catastrophe where, coincidentally, the CEO of the world’s largest company was a victim.
That’s it, the volume ends with a plot twist, Origami is now Adeptus 2 of DEM, the author mentions in the afterword that in the next volume the story will move a little and what I can anticipate is that many plot twists will come.
Previous Reviews.
-volume 1 - The color of the Night.
- volume 2 - Yoshinon and the Rain.
- volume 3 - The smile of Kurumi.
- volume 4 - Sister or Girlfriend?
- volume 5 - Yamais
- volume 6 - Lilies, she likes
- volume 7 - The Dark of the Night.
- volume 8 - What do people do on Halloween?

As always, all leaks are taken from the Source Accuracy Database, and only reliable sources are chosen to make these compilations.

Official Information

9-Episode (~40-minute each) Series Releasing This Fall

Synopsis

RETURNING FROM WANDAVISION:
NEW CHARACTERS:

Leaked Information

While the show underwent several subtitle changes from "House of Harkness" to "Coven of Chaos" to "Darkhold Diaries" , Disney revealed a couple of months ago that the show was simply titled "Agatha" all along (wink wink) and all these subtitles (including the subtitle "Agnes of Westview" previously teased by Joe Locke and Aubrey Plaza on Instagram) were actually episode titles all along, and this was just a marketing tactic to keep the series relevant.
According to leaks, this seems to be the final episode order:
The first episode of the series features Agatha still trapped under Wanda's spell and living in Westview as Agnes. We briefly see all the recurring WandaVision cast returning including Debra Jo Rupp as Sharon Davis/Mrs. Hart, Emma Caulfild as Sarah ProctoDottie Jones, David Lengel as Harold ProctoPhil Jones, Ali Asif as Abilash Tandon/Norm, David Payton as John Collins/Herb, Amos Glick as Dennis the mailman and Brian Brightman as Sheriff Miller.
While these are all confirmed to be part of the cast, we also know through leaks that Evan Peters will also return for a short role as Ralph Bohner. And no, his role is not getting retconned.
So, back to the first episode, we follow "Detective Agnes" trying to solve a murder in Westview, with the help of Aubrey Plaza's character who appears as a mysterious FBI Agent. At first, the victim is a Jane Doe, but as we get closer to the end of the episode, we realise the dead body is actually that of Wanda Maximoff. While Elizabeth Olsen doesn't physically appear in the series and the victim's face is always covered with a morgue blanket while on screen, we do see a toe tag on the body reading W. Maximoff.
Of course, none of this is real. There has been no murder in Westview and Agatha is not a detective. It's all just a fake reality/scenario that is playing in Agatha's head, but we learn that the "FBI Agent" is in fact real and throughout the whole episode, she has been trying to nudge Agatha and help her break out of the "Agnes" spell that Wanda put her on.
Once Agatha does break free of the spell and returns to her real self, she wakes up in her home in front of Plaza's character who we learn tis actually Rio Vidal, aka the Green Witch, aka Agatha's ex-wife (Agatha is bi), an original MCU character.
Through flashbacks, we learn that Agatha and Rio were married back in the 1600s, before Agatha had got her hands on the Darkhold, and they even had a son, Nicholas Scratch. But, once Agatha found the book of the damned and became obsessed with it, she slowly started losing herself to it and getting corrupted by its evil power, resulting in her sacrificing young Nicholas, her own son, to Mephisto (Mephisto is referenced by name, but does NOT show up)
Once Rio found out about this, she and Agatha broke up and Rio has been trying to get revenge on Agatha ever since. It was shortly after this, that Agatha's mom and her coven of witches put Agatha on trial for her use of black magic, but Agatha killed them all and travelled the world, stealing other witches' powers.
As we can understand of course, Rio will be a villain in the series, who appears crazy and obsessive at first, but is justifiably very hurt and angry and feels great contempt and hatred for Agatha, so it's unclear why she was helping her break out of Wanda's spell in the beginning.
The Green Witch (a title equivalent to the Scarlet Witch) is supposed to be one of the oldest and most powerful witches in the MCU, even more powerful than the Scarlet Witch. She uses the powers of Earth and nature and we'll actually see more "witches of color" in the series with special abilities, but Rio is not the only villain in the series.
There are 7 other witches seeking revenge from Agatha, and those are the daughters of the 7 witches from Agatha's mom's coven who Agatha sucked the life out of during her trial.
The coven of the daughters is called the "Salem Seven" and they are led by Okwi Okpokwasili's Vertigo. Each member of the Salem Seven can transform into animals. Vertigo can turn into a Cicada, Bethany Curry's character into a Crow, Athena Perample's character into a Fox, Marina Mazepa's character into a Snake, Britta Grant's character into a Rat, Chau Naumova's character into a Coyote and Alicia Vela-Bailey's character into an Owl.
Back to Agatha now, once she is freed from Wanda's spell, she realises that she has no powers anymore, and thus she needs to get them back.
So, her plan is to visit the Witches' Road, a magical pocket dimension, which can only be entered if you're part of a witch coven composed of at least 6 members and only if said coven sings a special song called "The Ballad of the Witches' Road" (which contains the lyrics "Down, down, down the road - down the Witches' Road"). Only the Scarlet Witch and the Green Witch can enter the dimension on their own.
This dimension has immense magical power and can grant travellers their wishes, so Agatha plans to wish to get her powers back. Thus, Agatha decides to go out and recruit her own coven in order to venture into the Witches Road.
Episode 2 is all about the coven recruitment, hence the episode's title, "Coven of Chaos".
Joining Agatha's coven are
Thankfully for Billy, his wondering soul happened to "witness" a fatal car crash were 13-year-old William Kaplan lost his life. William was not from Westview, but from Eastview, and he just happend to be near Westview when the Hex fell. Billy's soul, in an instinctive attempt to survive, and utilizing Billy's magical abilities, managed to enter William's body just as his soul was exiting, and took over his body, bringing it back to life.
Billy suffers from a small amnesia as a result, as his memories and William's memories basically become intertwined and weaved together. Now, 3 years later (Fall 2026 in the MCU timeline, aka around the same time as SI and The Marvels), Billy/William is 16, living happily with his supportive parents, Jeff and Rebecca Kaplan (played by Paul Adelstein and Maria Dizzia) and having a loving and caring relationship with his boyfriend, Eddie, played by Miles Guiterrez-Riley.
All 3 of them only appear in 2 episodes and have limited screen-time, but it's emphasised how supportive and loving they are, because Billy does not care enough about Wanda to leave his new family behind and save his real mom, even after she learns the truth about his lineage.
However, when the coven reaches the Witches' Road, Billy plans to use his wish to bring his brother, Tommy, back to life, since Tommy cannot possess another body due to his lack of magical powers. Tommy doesn't appear in the series, but it is teased at the end that he is out there somewhere and Billy and Agatha set out to find him (the 2 protagonists end up developing a mentomentee relationship), reportedly setting up a Wiccan show which was in development last year at Marvel Studios. It's unclear if the show is still happening or if this plot of Billy and Agatha finding Tommy has been integrated in VisionQuest and/or Young Avengers.
Billy is described as a teenager with a dark sense of a humour and a fanboy at times. He carries a pocket spell-book with him at all times. He is the most important and necessary part of the coven since he is a "compass" that will lead them to the Witches' Road.
However, it's not Agatha who seeks out Billy, but Billy who seeks out her. The official statement the government gave about the Hex incident was that it was an Avengers training exercise, but some Redditors don't buy this cover-up, some of whom are Westview citizens who experienced the Hex and want to get the truth out. When Billy reads these Reddit theories, it nudges his memory about who he really is and he goes after Agatha to find out more about his identity.
He sneaks into her house in the first episode, when Agnes has just broken free of her spell and he witnesses Agatha and Rio fighting, hiding in Agatha's room's closet.
When Billy first meets Agatha and eventually asks her whether his mother is alive, Agatha doesn't give a definite answer, and when Billy confronts her for a straight answer, she says "If you want a straight answer, ask a straight witch".
Later in the series, we learn that Wanda is indeed alive and is trapped at the end of the Witches Road, setting up a Children's Crusade storyline for the upcoming Young Avengers project.
Billy also does get his blue energy crown at the end of the show (similar to Wanda's energy crown), but not his classic blue suit.
For anyone worried about representation, the show will touch both Billy's (or William's to be exact) Jewish heritage and will explore both Agatha's and Billy's sexuality.
"Agatha" has been described as NOT a super-hero show, but a dark, supernatural, horror, adventure comedy.
While the majority of the show will take place in the Witches' Road, we will also revisit Wundagore Mountain.
Finally, talking about the Witches' Road, Marvel filmed a Witches Road Special Presentation concurrently with the show, written by the showrunner Jac Schaeffer and directed by Gandja Monteiro, that would have been released on Halloween, right after Agatha. The special contains a completely different coven of witches and it is a prequel set thousands of years in the past, showing the origins of the Witches Road dimension.
Now, the special has been integrated in the series, as one of the episodes (likely episode 3 considering its title).
What do you guys think about the series? I am personally very excited to dive into the Witchy side of the MCU, revisit Westview, get to know Agatha and Billy better and see the set-ups for Children's Crusade and the return of Wanda. The story also sounds intriguing with Agatha's past coming back to haunt her.

2024.05.12 04:13 grassgame01 Mechanics I would like to see if From made a hypothetical sequel

I am fully aware that From currently has no plans for a sequel to Elden Ring. Regardless, I just wanted to discuss some mechanics I would like to see if a shiny new next-gen souls game was made. If you have any thoughts on these ideas or some ideas of your own, feel free to say so.
DISMEMBERMENT
Tail cutting in Dark Souls 1 was sick. Being able to hit a boss in a weakpoint, limit its moveset, and sometimes get an item out of it was sick, and I'd like to see this kind of idea expanded to be more all encompassing and maybe even apply to some non-boss enemies. Positional damage could be an extension of dismemberment. Graze an enemy's arm with your sword, deal less damage. Strike an enemy's weakpoint (head, neck, torso, giant eyeballs), deal bonus damage. I think this would serve as a good companion to the posture mechanics that Elden Ring introduced.
PERFECT GUARDS
This one is pretty simple. Defense in Elden Ring feels fairly one-dimensional as it is now. You dodge roll at the right time and that's about it. Guard Counters are fun but don't feel as important or powerful as the pre-release trailers made them out to be. Blocking is good if you have stamina, but a lot of lategame bosses discourage it (i.e. malenia healing on block or other bosses like maliketh with elemental attacks.) My suggestion is simply to add a mechanic in which holding block just before an attack hits you will both reduce the stamina consumption by about 30% and also increase the elemental resistances of whatever you blocked with. This can be done with shields, greatshields, and even weapons.
GUNS
If a large timeskip were to take place between Elden Ring and this hypothetical sequel, it would be sick to see the Lands Between (or whatever land succeeds it) have technological advancement. I'm obviously not suggesting they add glocks or assault rifles. I'm thinking primitive hand cannons or flintlocks, similar to bloodborne. Guns would be able to be equipped in either the main hand or offhand, but would mainly be intended as an offhand ranged tool. Unlike bloodborne, guns CANNOT parry. They are strictly for dealing physical damage, like a crossbow but cooler. To go along with the themes of tech being advanced, a new starting class could be a pirate who starts with a curved sword and a flintlock handgun.
MORE DODGE ANIMATIONS
This is more of a cosmetic change than a gameplay one. I would be lying if I said I didn't get sick of looking at the dodge roll animation when most bosses will regularly require you to dodge 4 times in succession. Games like Bloodborne and DMC 5 have both sidestep dodges and roll dodges implemented, so I think it'd be cool to see Fromsoft spice things up a bit. Hell, even Ocarina of Time in 1998 had rolls, sidehops, and backflips. I-framing through an attack that hits your upper body could result in a Sekiro-style crouch step animation, Dodging over a low sweep could do a roll or hop over the attack, dodging an overhead slam could be a bloodborne style sidestep. If the game isn't sure which animation to pull for an attack, it simply defaults to the standard roll as a fallback. This would for sure be hard to implement, but fromsoft is a AAA studio with a big budget now, so I like to think something like this could be doable.

2024.05.12 03:31 freifraufischer A (not so quick) and Dirty Guide for Four Year Fans of Rhythmic (who happen to be regular fans of Artistic Gymnastics)

A (not so quick) and Dirty Guide for Four Year Fans of Rhythmic (who happen to be regular fans of Artistic Gymnastics)
(This is a lose adaptation of a very long thread I posted on the bird site. It's meant as a summary so there are things in here that are overly broad but I mostly want to help artistic fans know what is going on in Rhythmic with Paris on the horizon.)
So you only watch Rhythmic Gymnastics every 4 years and OMG Paris is in a few months and you have no idea what your watching except dropping things is bad and wasn't this sport like super corrupt?
Let's start with the basics. In the ye olden times all female gymnasts used to do exercises with portable and non portable apparatus. So a balance beam would be non portable and things like clubs, or balls would be portable. What we know of as artistic gymnasts competed in team portable apparatus. This video is from the 1952 Olympics and at the .10 mark you can see the Hungarian team which includes the great Ágnes Keleti (HUN)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dtZ9t_9O-b0
One of my favorite facts about Auntie Ágnes is that not only is she the oldest living Olympic champion at 103, a holocaust survivor and number 3 on the all time women's Olympic medal list... she's also a reigning Olympic champion as her team was the last to win gold on Team PA before the event was discontinued. A lot of things were changing in gymnastics in the 1950s, women stopped doing Rings, the uneven bars started evolving from just being a set of pbars set to different heights, and they stopped doing exercises with portable apparatus. It was in this period that the sport that we now know of as Rhythmic Gymnastics split off and embraced ways to make themselves different from Artistic Gymnastics. What I want to emphasize here is that Rhythmic is just as "old school" as Artistic.
It might be useful to point out here that in a lot of languages call MAG/WAG "Sport Gymnastics" (Russian) or "Apparatus Gymnastics" (many other European languages). In these contexts RG is often called "Artistic Gymnastics" because the sport emphasizes artistry so much more. The idea here is that this is a discipline that emphasizes more musicality, dance, formal ballet, and as a consequence they ban things like saltos. I'm mostly talking to people who are familiar with artistic gymnastics so think of this as "dance elements taken to 11".
Broadly a RG wants to keep the apparatus moving at all times as they perform elements, to avoid dropping it but also to avoid holding onto it with an obvious death grip. The ball should for instance sit in the hand, not be squeezed to keep hold. Here is a basic guide to ball handling by a British RGI (Individual Rhythmic Gymnast) and just understanding that basic foundation of handling really goes a long way to explain just how difficult the sport is.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p3MSLaVO-MM&t=246s
They throw the apparatus but your eye should stay on the gymnast not the flying apparatus as they do dance between the throw and the catch. If they catch the apparatus when they can't see it that's extra difficulty. Sometimes really terrible television camera crews will follow the apparatus in the air instead of the gymnast and this is very much worse than when they do face close ups on beam. All of the elements are what is happening UNDER the apparatus during the throw.
One of the things I find incredible about rhythmic gymnasts is just how smart they need to be in order to do their sport. We're talking a special and physical awareness that is second to none because they need that catch to appear natural and effortless. A hand should meet the apparatus you shouldn't stick your arm up and wait for it to arrive. You should be in the right place to catch it without having to move unnaturally out of your choreography or you will get a trajectory deduction. As a good casual rule of thumb, if you are seeing them trying hard to do something, something is wrong.
In fact, the ability of the gymnast to precisely control those throws means that when they do ribbon at the elite level they turn the air handling off in the arena so as not to influence the 6 meters of flying silk (that's almost 20 feet in freedom units). This adds a new level of awe when you realize that during ribbon qualification at last year's world's in Valencia, Spain it was 35 C (or 95 F). Please think about that later when I show you ribbon routines. And how toasty it will certainly be for athletes in Paris.
The apparatus are Hoop, Ball, Clubs, Ribbon, and Rope. Wait... what? Rope?! Yes. So they used to rotate between the 5 apparatus but Rope has fallen out of favor largely because it's difficult to read on TV, though many purists think it's the most difficult apparatus.
It's still competed among juniors and here is 2019 Junior Rope Apparatus World Champion Anastasia Simakova (RUS) (now GER)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7-G47KnUCZY
Another useful thing to know about the apparatus is that the clubs can be connected together or disconnected and this will frequently happen during the course of routines. My favorite weird fact about rhythmic is that if the clubs go out of bounds while connected it counts as one apparatus, but if you yeet the clubs out of bounds while they are separated it's two for double the penalty. No really... I will never not find this funny for some reason.
https://preview.redd.it/205fhweiyvzc1.png?width=438&format=png&auto=webp&s=3c1693c4f044588989d107a5effa90dcd02a718f
As a note, Ribbon always scores lower than the other apparatus, and you don't just risk dropping it but knots or even tangling yourself up in the ribbon in a kind of sparkly auto-bondage happen more frequently than you might think.
RG scoring is fairly complicated but in brief: Difficulty, Execution, and Artistry scores which are combined together to create a total. Execution and Artistry are out of a 10.0. Think of Execution the same way you would in AG, somewhere in the 8s is good. You start to look for something fairly major wrong when you have an E in the low 7s, and anything below 7 for an Olympic contender was a car crash. Like .44 in this video where major Olympic contender Stiliana Nikolova (BUL) trips on the spare apparatus.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pbx4R4M3akk&t=44s
Difficulty is open ended and is broken up into DA (difficulty of apparatus handling) and DB (body difficulty). If you want a better summary than I could ever give you (if a little outdated because of updates), here is the 2022-24 code in 15 minutes from Clematis on youtube. It was made for a RG point of view but I think if you are used to the WAG code you can probably follow along well enough.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AxIlbaiPJWY
Some gymnasts (like Nikolova and Darja Varfolomeev (GER)) build their routines on extremely high difficulty while others like Ekaterina Vedeneeva (SLO) and Daria Atamanov (ISR) concentrate on lower difficulty more securely done.
Rhythmic Group Gymnastics (RGG) is performed with 5 gymnasts together doing complex interacting choreography and exchanges. The apparatus for RGG changes every few years but always one routine is done with 5 of the same apparatus, and another with a mix of 2. The Paris quad RGG is 5 Hoops, and 3 Ribbons/2 Balls. People who want chaos wish for 10 Clubs but that's not in the cards for the next quad either.
If you aren't used to watching Rhythmic I promise you are probably better at spotting when things go wrong than you think. You may not know what it is, but "wait that's not right" comes quickly. Because the IOC hates fun, there are only two medal events at the Olympics, the All Around in RGI and the All Around in RGG. At world championships there is the All Around for both individuals and groups, but there are also apparatus finals. Because there are no apparatus medals at the Olympics we sometimes wont get to see the real masters of a given apparatus. Imagine if you never got to see Sanne Wever's beam because to get to the Olympics she had to be one of the top 24 All Arounders in the world.
Which is really an important thing to point out. There are only 24 individual rhythmic gymnasts at the Olympics. That is a TINY fraction of the competitive field. Relative to international competition there will be many highly competitive RGIs left home compared to WAGs. I want to dwell on that point for a moment so I'm going to apply the RGI Olympic qualifying procedure to the Artistic field. Rhythmic worlds Olympic QFers were all non-nominative, meaning the place is awarded to the country not the gymnast by name.
If WAG Olympic QF looked like RGI:
  • 2022 Worlds BRA, USA, GBR
  • 2023 Worlds USA, CAN, BRA, ITA, CHN, CHN, FRA, NED, ALG, GBR, AUS, ITA, ROU, GER
  • Continental Spots MEX, EGY, JPN, BEL, NZL
  • Reallocated Host Spot KOR
  • Plus a universality spot.
Congrats, each of those flags is 1 of your favorites. You only get 1 dutch WAG, who are you picking? You only get 2 Italians. We know what a bloodbath it was the last time the Romanians had to pick 1 WAG to go to the Olympics...
Back to the real world there are some heart breakers. There are 4 Bulgarians in the top 12 All Arounders this year. They have 2 spots in Paris. Other countries like Germany, Italy, and Ukraine will be leaving at least one great gymnast at home.
I'm going to go through the likely Olympic field, as well as some that will not make the Olympics because they deserve their flowers too. These routines are, for the most part, the their top scoring routines from 2024, or if I thought a 2023 Worlds routine is a better representative I've used that. For the top 5 All Arounders this year I'm showing you a routine on each apparatus.
  • 😁= Going to be in Paris
  • 😊= Likely to be in Paris
  • 😑= Their country earned a spot and they could theoretically get named but aren't likely
  • 😔= Will not be in Paris
😊 Stiliana Nikolova (BUL)
I call Nikolova "Rhythmic Flavia" after her long lost sister Flavia Saraiva in every sense of the word. Incredibly talented. Incredibly beautiful. But also a reputation for errors in finals that hold her back. She qualified in 1st for the AA at 2023 Worlds but came in 4th in the final. Remember what I said about how you can probably spot something wrong with "that doesn't look natural?"
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MLPt-3rifnA&t=119s
By the way, she's 18, just very short which isn't that common for a rhythmic gymnast. Her father was a professional football player and played in the 1986 FIFA World Cup for Bulgaria... continuing my theme of elite gymnasts with international footballer fathers.
😊 Sofia Raffaeli (ITA)
Sofia Raffaeli is the 2022 World Champion and the 2023 World Silver Medalist. She had a pretty major coaching change last year that was very disruptive and it's my perception that she has been doing a lot of tinkering with her routines.
😊 Daria Atamanov (ISR)
Are you starting to get a theme of music pandering to the Paris audience yet?
Atamanov was on a roll in 2022 as the European Champion (which means a LOT in RG), 2 gold medals at the World Games... and then she broke her leg in warmups at 2022 Worlds. She came back to win bronze in the AA at 2023 Worlds.
😊 Darja Varfolomeev (GER)
Varfolomeev was born in Siberia but left Russia when she was 12 to immigrate to the country of her grandfather. I've heard that Irina Viner thought Varfolomeev's body wasn't right for rhythmic... well she is the 2022 World Silver medalist and swept every gold at 2023 Worlds. One of the things that is really striking about Varfolomeev is that unlike most Germans she enthusiastically sings the German national anthem on the medal stand every. single. time. Which was a lot in Valencia.
😊 Boryana Kaleyn (BUL)
Remember what I said about how European Champions mean a lot in Rhythmic? Well Kaleyn is the 2023 European Champion. But she's been less successful at worlds relative to her continental success. 4 Worlds medals (1 team gold and 3 silvers) to 13 European Championship medals.
If I was a betting woman I'd say the Olympic medals are going to come from that first 5 gymnasts I introduced. There are others of course but these 5 gymnasts own all the World and European AA medals from this quad.
😊 Takhmina Ikromova (UZB)
Ball - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=chS5Y-8c8do
Ikromova owns the 11th highest All Around score of the year so far... her problem is those 5 big names hold the top 10 between them. Still she's the best rhythmic gymnast in Asia and came in 5th at worlds last year. On a good day she could medal in Paris but she may need help. And the Bulgarians are inclined towards helping others medal way too often for the sanity of their fans.
😑 Elvira Krasnobaeva (BUL)
Clubs - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4lw7_y3Rh50
Remember how limited the Olympic field is? Well this is the 7th best RGI by AA score this year. She almost certainly wont be in Paris because Kaleyn and Nikolova are just better bets.
😁 Elzhana Taniyeva (KAZ) - Asian Champs Quota
Clubs - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Jb9gZGdUkZY
😊 Ekaterina Vedeneeva (SLO)
Ribbon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NByCW_nEUws
Bronze medalist with ribbon at 2022 and 2023 Worlds is the beloved veteran finally able to shine later in her career. Think about how WAG fans feel about Georgia Godwin or Ellie Black and mix that with the elegance of an Eythora Thorsdottir. She originally competed for Russia but switched to Slovenia in 2018, in contrast to someone I will mention later Irina Viner did not oppose her transfer. A key difference was that Viner never saw Vedeneeva as a threat to take medals from Russian gymnasts.
😑 Eva Brezalieva (BUL)
Hoop - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mTbBZS2TzQ
Remember how I said 4 of the top 12 All Arounders this year were Bulgarian? Meet number 4. Unfortunately for her they only have 2 spots in Paris.
😊 Alba Bautista (ESP)
Ball - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyTRgKgyK6c
😊 Viktoriia Onopriienko (UKR)
Clubs - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4icRp-FX5Y
Bronze with clubs at 2023 Worlds, this is one of my favorite routines of last year. It also shows what the power of a giant crowd that actually has rhythm clapping unlike some depressing artistic gymnastics crowds. But you may know her from this.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oOCHFWODAGY
😊 Margarita Kolosov (GER)
Ball - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QCwB_3ESnPQ
Remember how I said Germany will have a hard choice, after Varfolomeev they have two very talented gymnasts plagued with inconsistency. Kolosov is likely the one who will win out here (which some may feel is right as she earned the second German spot at worlds however the other athlete wasn't permitted to compete at 2023 Worlds....). I think of Kolosov for her incredibly aggressive towel throwing at the start of her walk out. Every time.
😑 Anastasia Simakova (GER)
Ball - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OotziO4k34w
Kolosov can't breath easy because running neck and neck with her is her club mate Anastasia Simakova but if inconsistency marks both of them it does Simakova more. She had been a Jr. World Champion for Russia and came to Germany (where her parents had immigrated) in 2022. Simakova's family are from the ethnic German minority in Russia and she told Irina Viner that she was going to Germany to get (a very real) back injury treated. And never came back. The Disney Villain of Gymnastics was displeased and held up her country transfer for a year. A stress point is that she didn't immigrate to a country where it would be easier to make the Olympics. She moved to the one her parents had already immigrated to.
Viner has allowed Russian gymnasts to leave and compete for small unthreatening countries in the past, but generally those have been "B" team gymnasts. Simakova had far too much success and Germany (and her coach Yulia Raskina) were far to outside of Viner's control to allow it.
😊 Fanni Pigniczki (HUN)
Hoop - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TsKKiL3kA1Y
The most successful Hungarian rhythmic gymnast ever, she won bronze with the hoop at 2023 Worlds. The Spanish crowd gave her a nickname after the motion one makes while making potato croqueta.
😊 Zohra Aghamirova (AZE)
Ball - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TVP7dSfv44k
😊 Helene Karbanov (FRA)
Ribbon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwD31PfYp-0
The French were very proud of the fact that they qualified both a group and an individual in their own right and didn't need a host spot. Karbanov doesn't quite have the difficulty to contend for medals but her artistry is lovely and enjoyable.
😊 Bárbara Domingos (BRA)
Ball - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UD_oAqQINLQ
Domingos is pretty decisively the best RG in the Americas right now and I expect insanity when Rhythmic Worlds is held in Brazil next year. One of the things I love about this routine is you can clearly see how they can't grip the ball so the handling has to be precise.
😊 Milena Baldassarri (ITA)
Hoop - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6beHGGdPq7M
Baldassarri finished 6th in Tokyo and is probably the second Italian but she has a younger potential rival for that spot that is chasing at her heals.
😑 Tara Dragas (ITA)
Ball - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cto6j-UgN6k
I actually think the fight between the Italians for the second spot should be tighter than the German race but I just can't let go of the sense that it will go to Baldassarri. Dragas is young though and surely a name for the LA quad.
😊 Polina Berezina (ESP)
This was my personal favorite ball routine of last year, it was choreographed for the University Games in Chengdu but she didn't end up going. She was very careful to make sure she included a mix of real Chinese martial arts movements. I also really like her 2024 Clubs to the music of Black Panther. Though Berezina was born in Russia and her sister works in film there now, she has lived in Spain since she was 4 and has had all her training in Spain. She is a product of the robust Spanish gymnastics system, not the Russian one.
😊 Annaliese Dragan (ROU)
Ball - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6A5zc1Ts_gM
😁 Wang Zilu (CHN) - Reallocated Host Quota
We all have favorites and Wang Zilu is mine. Full disclosure.
😁 Aliaa Saleh (EGY) - African Championships Quota
Ball - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r40wQHtYQBA
😁 Evita Griskenas (USA) - Pan American Games Quota
Ribbon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=--ergCL_3Ow
She is the 2019 Pan American Games AA champion and 2023 Pan American Games silver medalist. She will be the only American rhythmic representation in Paris as the US did not qualify a group.
😔 Alina Harnasko (AIN)
Ribbon - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1YWf8A6Xem0
Harnasko is the Tokyo bronze medalist and without question I think the best non Bulgarian FIG authorized RGI who wont be in Paris. She can not qualify as her only path to the Olympics would have been the European Championships and European Gymnastics has maintained their ban. That said, I don't think even if Harnasko had been in Paris she would have medaled. Having watched her over the course of the season (as well as other Belarussians), it's fairly clear to me that the Belarussians haven't maintained the difficulty curve to stay competitive.
That covers the top individuals, there will be another European (not from a previously qualified country) and an Australian in the field. Group isn't my thing and I'm not keeping a running tally of the leading scores for groups so this will be a bit more vibes
Israel (2023 World Champions)
3 Ribbons/2 Balls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3hVWyjhZzzU
I think at the moment Israel is the most likely to medal in group (if not gold). But Group can go south very quickly as seen with the same group doing the same routine at the Palaio Faliro World Cup
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Zl0WAhN3CE
Bulgaria (2022 World Champions)
3 Ribbons/2 Balls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SXYwZmzSLZo
But I hear you saying, why do I think Israel has better odds than Bulgaria? They're stunning. And aren't they the Olympic champions? Well yes, A Buglarian group were the Olympic Champions, but this is a different Bulgarian group. They are much younger and the pressure on them is tremendous and cracks show quite frequently. Most tragically at 2023 Worlds. When your 5 Hoops routine is suddenly a 7 Hoops routine as you yeet the apparatus out of bounds.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tVzWW0ulHFM
Spain
5 Hoops https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4LxSPZAK_Vo
China
5 Hoops https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6wd6wpMmFZo
I desperately want the Chinese group to medal in Paris. They're my favs. I'm sorry I can't talk more coherently about groups than I can about individuals.
Italy
5 Hoops https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e05ezkvFHGg
Ukraine
5 Hoops https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4bUW61a17xU
Brazil
3 Ribbons 2 Balls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YlE2tP6mVRw
This is a very early season competition but it's my favorite mixed apparatus group routine this year and I think showcases how different styles can be integrated into rhythmic. I can't wait to see this routine in Paris.
France
3 Ribbons 2 Balls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nZu9ZkZNkyQ
Yes, this is the second Moulin Rouge I've shown you. Welcome to the Paris Olympics!
Mexico - Pan American Games Quota
5 Hoops https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-K36uEWicn8
Egypt - African Championships Quota
3 Ribbons 2 Balls https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DGXCmYIpyAI
Uzbekistan - Asian Championships Quota
5 Hoops https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fGjMF3VIXjQ
Germany - Either the European Quota OR the Reallocated Host Quota
5 Hoops https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Py7M0QKBZ3g
There will another European country which will either be whoever wins the European quota or if Germany wins it then AZE
I have been salty about the fact that Australia gets a free pass to the Olympics despite finishing 23 of 24 Groups at 2023 Worlds but apparently they have a new group this year who I'm assured is not that bad.
Anyway so that's the Olympic field, for the most part, because I'm a structural nerd I'm going to hit on a few other points.
Corruption
The sport has a terrible and long history of corruption, including judges cheating on FIG exams (you can thank rhythmic for why FIG doesn't like holding online exams), bribery, favoritism, and straight up writing the code of points to favor a particular athlete. I will be honest and tell you that the corruption kept me from giving the sport a chance for a long time and I don't blame you if you find it a non starter as well. It's still a problem but I have hope.
There is no getting around that Rhythmic is essentially an Eastern European sport and Russia has dominated for many years in part because of the immense amount of money they spend not just at home but in other federations. One might say that Irina Viner bought herself a sport. Not that it wasn't for sale before Viner.
To give a sense of the amount of money involved let's talk about palaces to Rhythmic Gymnastics. Literal Palaces.
This is the Irina Viner-Usmanova Gymnastics Palace in Moscow.
This is the National Gymnastics Arena in Baku, Azerbaijan, built in large part for the first lady/vice president of the country whose favorite sport is... you guest it.
National Gymnastics Arena in Baku, Azerbaijan
Just the mention of Baku is enough to send some rhythmic fans into PTSD flashbacks for completely unjustifiable scoring (and terrible camera work and and and ...) . The fact that the arena was built for Rhythmic though, will explain to Artistic fans why the arena can't put both a beam and a set of parallel bars on it's floor space at the same time at the Baku World Cup.
The sport also has a vicious history of coaching abuse and eating disorders that I wont defend and I don't think has really been addressed. But the elephant in the room of all of this corruption and abuse is Irina Viner, the president of the Russian Rhythmic Gymnastics Federation. Irina Viner was married to Oligarch Alisher Usmanov, at one point Russia's richest man. He's currently the president of the European Fencing Federation which explains how they've massively botched handling Russian athletes.
Her Wikipedia Article.
They divorced for financial reasons after Usmanov was subject to many many many sanctions following the invasion of Ukraine. His mega yacht is stranded in Germany.
Anyway, Irina Viner dresses like a Disney Villain and acts like one too. After she viciously attacked the judges at the Tokyo Olympics she was banned for 2 years starting from the day after Russia's international ban ends.
https://preview.redd.it/0l3weeymcwzc1.jpg?width=866&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=960f12a402c0975dba57b994c64a50c826f91fe4
She has at different points told gymnasts that she'll kill them if they try to retire, and pulled Russian support from her own hand picked president of the Rhythmic Technical Committee because she didn't fall in line in Tokyo. The carrot to performing for Viner though is a promise of a marriage to an obscenely wealthy Russian man at the end of your career. Or you know... becoming the mother of Putin's children. Khorkina's face in this picture...
https://preview.redd.it/2vv649gscwzc1.jpg?width=2200&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=5514a3ffe55d47e28834bb3156ed49941b56f7d1
So they're banned and they've dominated the sport for so long surely they're doing amazing things at their domestic competitions now. Well... for values of amazing. Viner has decided to create her own personal code of points which the Russians are now competing to. It emphasizes elements that in previous FIG CoPs caused massive numbers of injuries. Massive scores despite obvious errors and their gymnasts are breaking down physically. They've also brought up a non-apparatus routine setting called Free Hands which is normally competed by juniors... but hey if Irina likes it she's playing in her own sandbox now.
Would the Russians be competitive if they were in Paris? Sure. Probably. But maybe not? It's hard to tell when they're playing in lala land and have routines composed for an entirely different code of points. No Russians have applied for FIG AIN status.
But here is the best part.... Rhythmic Gymnastics is taking the time they have without the Russians and without Viner and they're fixing as much as they can as fast as they can. The age for juniors was raised last year (something Irina very much did not want) and the 2025-28 Code of Points takes a hatchet to a lot of the difficulty stacking (very broad over simplification) that has been written into previous codes to favor particular Russian gymnasts. They're basically unwinding what she did to the CoP either directly or through her influence.
And right now Rhythmic is more competitive than it's ever been. A wide variety of countries are winning medals, and the RGI All Around in Paris looks to be the most unpredictable that it has ever been and much more unpredictable than the artistic all arounds.
The biggest looming issue for Rhythmic though is the IOC's clear dislike of single gendered sports. With the introduction of men to artistic swimming it's hard to think that Rhythmic will stay in the Olympics for very long if they don't find some way to include men.
There are two competing styles of men's rhythmic but neither has a mass of athletes. The first is Japanese Men's Rhythmic which includes things you normally would see in Artistic. Some argue that it's basically a different sport.
Japanese Men's Rhythmic Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=D48ZPoY2e2Y
The second style is Spanish Men's Rhythmic which more closely echoes the women's discipline.
Spanish Men's Rhythmic Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BckY1Glglrg
Men's rhythmic faces a lot of resistance rooted in homophobia and I don't know how it's going to resolve. But the IOC is pretty much an unmovable object and they have been systematically forcing gendered integration on single gender sports.
If you want to learn more here is a great video from a few years ago about the state of Men's Rhythmic and showing a lot of examples:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gNhLauzoYOk
I'll leave you off with one last routine.
😑 Taisiia Onofriichuk (UKR)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ndz58tmfBVQ
Onofriichuk will almost certainly not be in Paris but I feel like her exhausting ribbon is a good way to end this marathon of a thread.

Your Comprehensive Guide To the Mothers Day Solar Storms of 2024 (Round 2)
UPDATE 8:30 PM EST
Good evening everyone, I put the caps away for the update since there is no big X flare in the update, but as we got into in the initial post, the big X5.89 CME is headed this way. It was brought to my attention by neutralbystander11 that SWPC has released an update with some more infomation. My initial estimation of impacts was based on the DONKI scorecard, which is a more comprehensive and aggregate system of all models. However, its has limitations, namely how will existing waves combine and interact. The SWPC update is suggesting that the CMEs have in fact combined on the heels of the X5.89 which did appear to have a higher velocity than the preceeding CMEs upon ejection. That has influenced them to issue another G4-G5 watch. Looking at the solar wind right now, I do believe tomorrow night is going to be a better shot than tonight for another sighting. Could be wrong, and you need to leave me alot of room on that front, because arrival times is the hardest part with a dynamic setup like this. We all should be watching the solar wind for signs of imminent arrivals just in case they arrive sooner than expected. SWPC did not say anything about exact arrival time and their comments conflict with the latest ENLIL runs, which have not been the most reliable here lately. DONKI model aggregates suggest an arrival time of tomorrow 5/12 at 00:02 UTC which is 7 PM EST. That would be just about perfect, but the problem is that very little has panned out on the timelines implied. Again, we take the info for what its worth, but results may vary. I have eyes on it, but right now I am getting the sense that tomorrow night may be a better opportunity. I am watching the solar wind right now and the speed is insane at nearly 1000 km/s but the density is extremely light. A small fraction of what it was last night and the Bz is wavering back and forth from north to south orientation and we need a solid southerly orientation to hit paydirt. Its enough for a solid and steady G3, but one look at the auroral oval and you will see that last night was MUCH different.
We do not know when exactly it will arrive, but most indications are sometime tomorrow. I will show you what I am looking at. Check the left side for arrival time sfrom various offices, but the bottom is an average of all. It does say an upper bound of Kp8, but a common theme this week has been overperformance and SWPC apparently has gotten the memo with stronger wording showing up the past 24 hours or so.
https://preview.redd.it/1jy4xn5s6wzc1.png?width=1707&format=png&auto=webp&s=b0915f298b2695375b19a4fc01cf5aa98169bcb4
The ingredients are there for another spectacular night, but we are going to need a few things to work out right, but I think the chances are pretty good. More so than tonight, but again, I could very well be wrong. The CME will do as it please. All we can do is stay tuned, keep eyes on the skies and our data points, and hope that conditions line up, including the time of day for optimal viewing.
And nope, I am still not worried, just excited. Someone made an important comment earlier, and while we do need to keep it in context of changes in our mag field since then, but back in 03, we took an X10 and X17 direct almost back to back. Yet most I have talked to who saw that storm and this one say that the auroral display last night was noticeably more intense. If you have any input on that, do share. Do with that what you will, it is only anecdotal of course, but I can tell you after this epoch of skywatching ends, we are going to be breaking it down for months to come and the thing I am most interested in is Maggie. Our magnetic field is far more than our forcefield from such events and its a crucial component in virtually all levels of life on earth.
One final thing before I go. I want to talk about flying during geomagnetic storms. I have gotten far more of this question than I expected, but then again, I did not expect to have over 2000 people here a few days ago. People have asked if it is safe for them to fly, or even if it is safe for their pregnant spouses to fly. I fully understand the gravity of the question and I want to allay some concerns. If you get the chance to fly during a geomagnetic storm, do it. It will not harm you in and of itself. You will not be exposed to significant amounts of radiation. There is one metric you need to watch when it comes to flying, and its the same one as our astronauts and people on the ISS. Protons. Aside from navigation and communications considerations, the main thing airlines pay attention to is the solar radiation levels in the form of proton storms. When you see the chances for particular type of flares, you will sometime see probabilities for proton events. Proton events often accompany big flares and CMEs, but they can stem from other things too. Just like the Kp Index and the G1-G5 scale, proton radiation storms have their own scale from S1 to S5. Currently we are at S1 levels and have not exceeded it except for a brief moment yesterday. Levels could rise again, but so far have been muted, which is a tiny bit surprising but the numbers dont lie. The effects of proton storms are typically constrained to the polar regions unless the storm is sufficiently powerful enough to reach lower. There have been occaisions where airlines and space based entities have had to make adjustments on account of this, but when it comes to flying, they are looking at it closely. It never hurts to ask if you feel leery about it, but dont expect the ticket counter attendant to be able to explain it.

Hey everyone, last night I had stated that it appeared the bulk of the CME was headed northward. Well in the light of day, that does not appear to be the case. LASCO coronagraphs updated this morning as well as the DONKI scoreboard and it does appear we have impacts that will continue through today, and until tomorrow, and possibly even Monday. Now this last flare and CME did stem from the 2nd strongest flare of this cycle I do believe, an impressive X5.9 with "massive dimming" according to CCMC indicating an impressive CME. It is a partial halo, and what that is telling us is that the bulk of it is in fact heading our way. It was of reasonably long duration and it will be on the tail end of a very active period thus far. Additionally there have been a few upper M-Class flares with decent duration themselves with probable CMEs. They have not been accurately modeled just yet. I am still consulting the ENLIL spiral, but its updates are lagging behind significantly. I am mainly working off imagery now and the DONKI scoreboard which honestly has been one of the coolest tools I have found, fortunate to have found it last week before this event. Thank you Mr. Harlan Thomas. Lets talk about what a "halo cme" means and clear up a few misconceptions.
When this term is used, its because in the coronographs, it appears that ejecta is literally flying out of all sides of the sun. We know this is not the case. CMEs are directional in nature, and while they can grow to massive sizes, they still do not go in all directions at once. The reason it appears that way is the viewing angle. The imagery is taken alot closer to earth than it is the sun. As a result, when a CME is fired directly at us, it appears to come from all sides of the sun from our angle, but really its just a wave that appears to grow larger in terms of visually as it gets closer. This same mechanic is often used to determine what is going on with other objects in space. If we detect something and it starts growing suddenly, its because its either coming towards us and appearing larger as a result, or because its actually growing of course. You would be surprised how much information about the cosmos is deduced by using process of elimination and if X = Y than it must be Z. We do the best we can with what we have. This particular CME was a partial halo, so that indicates the bulk of it is headed here, but some will miss.
As a result, DONKI is giving the latest CME an upper bound of Kp7 from an average of all models, with some individual models forecasting Kp8. This event has taught us in real time that the models are good for advice, but have a long way to go both in forecasting strength and timing. I lean more towards it overperforming than under performing even though its not as geoeffective as the previous waves because it will encounter a very perturbed magnetosphere. This storm did not quite get to Halloween 2003 levels in terms of strength, yet by many reports the aurora were reported to be more intense last night. For those who have been watching our magnetic field closely, this does not come as a surprise. After this event passes, we will dive into that a little bit more and break down what this means in the grand scheme, but for now lets focus on the here and now.
FORECAST FOR TONIGHT
The models are suggesting impacts continue into tonight with potential arrivals from the X1.0 and M9.8 which was the most impressive signature in AIA 131 with a rotating starlike effect and it went on for a long time with dual peaks near X1. It has an upper bound of Kp9 HOWEVER there is a chance that this wave has already affected us. We just dont know and all we can do is measure the impacts as they occur. I have had alot of questions about this and after the forecast I will explain. We also have impacts scheduled into tomorrow with upper bounds of Kp8. We also have the possibility of the X1.1 and X3.9 arriving in the next 24 hours. So the long and short of it is this. Tonight remains an excellent opportunity to aurora chase. The solar wind speed is very high currently at 918 km/s but the density is super low. However, if those arrivals start to come in, the density could jump, and that will start some fireworks with speeds that high. It would also be good if the Bz stays mostly south, the further the better. The bottom line is this. You are going to have to keep checking the SWL auroral dashboard and watch those numbers or you can cheat and look at the auroral oval to get a realtime idea of where it SHOULD be visible. Its a very good chance, and I would be optimistic we will get another show and its in the realm of possibility for it to be better than the first, but the opposite is true too. We just dont know because what happens in the solar wind, stays in the solar wind, until it reaches our probes around 5% of the way from here to the sun. That is our lead time ladies and gentlemen. 5%.
THis is the timeline for a flare/CME event and how we detect it.
X-Ray flux indicates a solar flare is in progress which will be quickly be confirmed by SDO imagery and similar probes in varius spectrums and wavelengths.
The solar flare has characteristics of a CME which are dimming around it, shockwave dispersal, and ejecta visible in various wavelengths. LASCO coronagraphs will pick it up and be able to get a general idea of the direction using visual analysis as well as instrumental. If the blast is full halo, it can be assumed its coming here.
Next its velocity and density will be measured and estimated using all data points available. Again, hard to measure these details so far away, but the system works as far as that goes, because we have many eyes on the sun. We dont have so many on the long trip between here and there since these bodies are so far apart and in motion. So using that data as well as all other data points, it is fed into the solar wind models like the WSA-ENLIL or EUHFORIA which will do their level best to give us a timeline and gauge the impacts.
Results vary widely between models and reality in this case and as the variables increase, the results are harder to predict. In this case we have a train of CMEs headed here, and I have said this from the very start, I fully expected them to struggle, and they have. The same rationale is why I was so confident saying this storm would overperform its forecast. I dont have to worry about being as right as much as they do, so I can take those risks. They have to play it safe.
So in summary, we detect and measure them as they leave the sun but we will not see them again in real detail until they reach our probes located about 5% to 6% of the entire distance from the earth to the sun. Using these probes, we then can detect their signatures and get a better idea of what is coming. When you look at your dasbhoard on SWL, and specifically the solar wind charts, there is a line that says "earth" but the chart goes further. What you are seeing is the characteristics of the CME be detected and then fed into the models. So as a result, there is no choice but to use the models for guidance and then take it as it comes. We get more advanced at this every decade and its likely that tools will be implemented in the future that give more data and therefore more accurate forecasts, especially for the tough ones like this weekend. You will just need to stay plugged in.
Is It Safe To Put The Tomato Plants Back Outside and Come Out of the Bunker?
In my humble opinion, this weekend should go a long way in allaying some fears about how vulnerable we are AT THIS POINT IN TIME to significant space weather events. By all metrics we experienced an extreme storm on the practical scale. Yes, Maggie sure is taking a beating this weakend, but so far she has not flinched, and life goes on despite hitting an estimated Kp11 according to some models with auroras visible in southern Mexico and Cuba. This should allay some fears about these garden variety solar storms being hazardous or dangerous to our technologically dependant way of life. Its significant, but not unprecedented in modern times. There may very well come a time when this is not the case, when a solar storm of this magnitude could be hazardous, but that is a hypothetical. So many things COULD happen and we have to respect that but at the same time, we have to live in the moment, the moment is all we have, and for now we are fine against stuff like this. There have been some outages and disruptions which were predicted and expected. Satcoms stuggled and various services have had outages. GPS and Radio definitely suffered and continue to. Starlink took a hit but seems to have recovered for the most part. There are still sporadic outages and performance issues across the board. Being impacted and being devastated are not the same though and this is all part of the game, but as far as I know, there have been no significant powergrid issues. Could there have been? People ask about 1989 when Quebecs grid went down and point to that, but what most dont know is that there were other factors in that stemming from the geology that caused the currents to do something unexpected. It was down for around 9 hours in some places. At the same time, we learned from it, and contrary to belief, measures have been taken to safeguard us during these events. Would those safeguards work in a CE or greater size storm? I hope we never have to find out together. We would not be defenseless, but it would likely be disastrous and theres no way around that in my view, but that aint this weekend folks. I wonder if the twitter people feel silly today?
Many have asked, how would we know if a storm was going to be that bad? What would the lead time be? Some even wonder if such information would be withheld. I will just tell you that there is no way that could happen. It is not just NASA/NOAA etc watching this stuff. Many are. The data and imagery is free to use for everyone and many keep tabs, far more closely than myself. If a CE happened, we would see the flare and CME signature and would immediately know that something extraordinary and anomalous happened by the flash, the radio burst, and all of the measurements taken during every CME. The numbers would tell us that the potential is there. However, in order to get the finer details, it takes a little time, and very precious time at that. These CMEs over the weekend arrived in around 48 hours. The Carrington Event was said to arrive somewhere between 14-17 hours IIRC. The long and short of that problem is that if you are not already prepared by the time the CME is detected, you are in a bad way. At the same time, its very difficult to prepare for the possibility of such a long term scenario but folks, we can't worry about it and get anxious.
Any number of things COULD happen. ATLAS could detect a 25KM comet headed directly for us from deep space. A supervolcano could erupt and wreck our climate and block the sunlight. WWIII could break out and go nuclear. I could go on and on and on with examples. These things are in fact threats, but all you can do is try to prepare for them. Stressing yourself about it needlessly serves no purpose. Existential threats are not in short supply these days and anyone truly paying attention recognizes that. I say this as a father and a husband. I do not miss much, at all because I cannot look away. I have been following the story that is human civilization in the modern age since I was very young. When I was a little boy and while other kids were watching cartoons and nickolodeon, I watched Hurricane Andrew slam into Florida, the OKC bombing, Desert Storm. I have been this way as long as I can remember and in some ways I feel cut out for it but that is probably me just being the main character of my own story, and we all do that at times. It can and does create anxiety sometimes and I recognize that but I try to keep it in its proper place and perspective but I man my station on the watchtower and I dont know why.
So lets enjoy this friends. We may have another very exciting night. After these CMEs pass, guess what? Solar max is not over and shows no signs of letting up just yet. It looks like we have some new active regions coming into view and complexity is a little muted but the size is there. AR3664 looked about the same at the E limb. Until those poles reverse and the rearrangement completes, we are in the thick of it. This does mean the CE watch continues of course, but more likely it just means we are going to have some more weekend like this one. Maybe more intense or maybe less. I can tell you that the fine folks here on this sub will be watching for all things. The fun stuff and the scary stuff and we will try to give it to you as straight as we can without the BS. I am analyst by trade in real life. I understand what it takes to analyze something effectively. It means looking at something without bias, without emotion, and without personal feelings or desires. Sometimes those things creep in anyway, but its the job of the analyst to keep his objectivity and not be swayed by anything but the result. I have been analyzing the sun and other topics for a long time and I have done so with no audience. I started this sub and in the past week it blew up and I cannot tell you how grateful and touched I am from it truly and every writer who has ever written anything, just wants somebody to read it. However, I am not willing to hype things up, scare people, be misleading, be overtly controversial, or get too high on my own supply. I am pleased that we did this organically but whether it was 1 person or 1000, I am going to do it the exact same way.
Well that is enough for now, so lets wrap it up. Again, I cannot demonstrate my gratitude enough. I am a sensitive person and I have no shame in that, and some of the comments had me saying nah, just something in my eye, I kid you not. Its been a great experience and I hope its been great for you, and I look forward to many more. As always I will try to answer questions and allay concerns as a priority but I see the thank yous and I appreciate them all.

2024.05.11 13:56 DukenottheDuke (AU) It's finally here - AW3225QF

(AU) It's finally here - AW3225QF
So, I finanlly received the unit yesterday, after a 20-day delay of shippment. Thought to share some experience if anyone's on the same boat. For context, I living in Sydney, Australia.
Order placement: tl;dr delivery delayed right after placing the order, though arrived early after contacting Dell.
Placed the order throught official website when there was a surprising sale coming up on April 20th, 20% off. When placing order, I saw it would be shipping in 2 days. But later that night, an email popped up notifying there was a delay, and the expected delivery would be on May 20th. Very frustrated. On May 6th I by accident noticed on Alienware website displayed the expected delivery would be May 10th. So I contacted Dell support and they agreed to give me an 'expedited delivery', and someone would get in touch with specifics. Then the contact never came, but delivery came on May10th (10 days earlier than the delayed date).
Packaging: tl;dr perfect delivery (see pic). No packaging issue to worry about.
Package arrived perfectly. Lighter than expected. Be sure to be at home when it arrives though because I heard that the size of this package is too big and it doen't fit every Australia Post's storage, so may end up being somewhere farther than the closest depot. There's two layers of protection - foam as the out layer, sticky protection as the inner layer. You remove the out layer first, then unstick all taps from the back of the screen to remove the inner layer. Anyway, perfectly protected.
Setup: tl;dr stand is too big, need bigger table. Curvature is unsensable.
My table is 110cm wide and 70cm deep. Way too small for the screen. You either get a bigger table (150cm*80cm at least), or get a monitor arm. Speaking of which, Dell gave around $48 AUD via their reward system. Might consider getting an official Dell arm using this voucher. The big thing is, on a 70cm deep table, the monitor is too close to the eye and I kind of feel 'overwhelmed'. My previous monitor is ASUS PG348 ultrawide. With the ultra wide, even thought the screen size is 2 inches bigger, it didn't make me feel overwhelmed because it's not very tall compared to AW3225QF, and the height of the monitor is exactly what made me feel overwhelmed. However it does make me feel immersive though.
One of the biggest controversies of this screen is its curvature. I honestly don't feel it mainly because of its subtleness and the monitor's size. As mentioned later, the screen is way taller than ultrawide monitors, and this height exagerates the immersion and even the sense of overwhelm, but it greatly eliminates your sense of curvature. When playing games, I cannot feel the curve anyways when concentrate on the game. But when I'm not playing games, I use black themes everywhere, and this may prevent me from feeling curvature. So curvature is really the last thing you worry about, if you worry at all. If you're hesitatent about the curvature, just buy a unit and try it out and you should feel ok. The worst is just return it.
Performance: tl;dr works perfectly with M3 Max Mac, but RTX 3070ti is struggling
Tons of previous posts have touched on this and they helped me a lot before purchasing. But I'm under the impression that many posted have RTX4090, which I don't have. So I tried myself with the RTX 3070ti. Not surprisingly, you want to get better graphic cards. I'm certain I'll build a new desktop when the 50 series graphic card comes out to unlock this monitor's potential.
With Mac however, it performs surprisingly well. My Mac is MacBook Pro M3 Max. Before I bought, many Mac users reported their Mac worked at 4k@120 hz and they needed to buy an extra cable. I thought I would be the same. But when I tested with my own Mac, I realised my newer unit actally works better. For one, I don't need an extra cable - both my Mac and Alienware x17 can use the same HDMI cable because the M3 Max chip supports HDMI 2.1, and previous gens don't, which is why many M1 and M2 users couldn't use HDMI to unlock 4k@240 hz. For two, I can unlock 4k@240 with HDMI instead of others reported 4k@120 with DP. I don't personally need 4k@240 on Mac since I do PhD and only read papers and code on it, but I appreciate I'm able to have this performance. There's tons of different resolution ratios one can choose from on the Mac after connecting the monitor, and I tried a few and they all worked perfectly.
Overall the build quality of the monitor is solid, no wobble and scractes or anything. I'm glad at this stage AW3225QF is up to my standard. Since I live in Sydney, electronic products are priced really rediculously. Even though I know there are many outstanding competitors out there in the market, the price and availability of AW3225QF help make it an easier decision. I'm glad AW3225QF lives up my expectation.
Feel free to drop any comments and questions.

Hey there! It's been awhile since I've had a penpal, but I just have way too much stationary, stickers and washi to keep to myself lol.
a little about me:
Im a curious person by nature, and I love learning about people and ways of life different from my own. I love to read, and I'm always down for book suggestions so feel free to drop your favorites in the comments. I love Halloween and all things spooky. You might get a Halloween themed letter from me in the middle of July. I love horror movies and true crime documentaries and podcasts! I play Animal Crossing and Disney Dream light Valley on my switch. Im very crafty and love learning new crafty hobbies. My current favorite hobbies are junk journaling (would be great to find someone else also into junk journaling but not required), watercolor painting and jewelry making. I like to play tennis and take my dogs on walks at the parks in my city. Im very open-minded and LGBTQ+ friendly!
Im looking for someone to just swap stories about our childhoods and every day life with. I really enjoy listening to people and Im down to talk about our day-to-day boring lives or the crazy shit your coworker said to you yesterday. Also I love music of all kinds (seriously, all kinds) and would like to find someone who is the same way because I'd like to swap playlists with our letters.
I don't have a preference in a penpal when it comes to gender or location but I would like to keep the age 21 or above.
If this sounds like something you'd be interested in just shoot me a PM with a bit about you and your mailing address and I can get a letter written up for you!

2. Bit Starz US Crypto Casino

What Does "Provably Fair" Mean? As online casinos like Bit Starz grow, you'll hear the term "provably fair" more and more. This means that you can check if the game is fair. At Bit Starz, every Soft Swiss game is provably fair, but what does that mean exactly?
It means that before you play, you can verify that the game is fair. They use a special method that makes it impossible for you or the casino to know the outcome beforehand. You'll see a fingerprint before the game starts, showing the spin that will be used. After the game, you can confirm that this was the spin used.
For example, with roulette, they use a computer model and a random spin. The fingerprint combines the spin and a "secret" number. This creates a unique fingerprint for each spin, making it impossible to predict the outcome. You can check if the spin matches the fingerprint after the game.
Similar methods are used for other games on Bit Starz, like dice games and card games. You can find technical details about these methods on their website.
How Soon Can You Cash Out Winnings? When you win at Bit Starz, you can withdraw your money quickly. They use an automatic processing system, so the average cash-out time is less than 10 minutes.
How Do You Deposit Money and Withdraw Earnings? Depositing money and withdrawing earnings at Bit Starz is easy. They offer many methods, including credit and debit cards, e-wallets, and bank transfers. Some of these methods include Visa, Mastercard, Skrill, and Bitcoin.
After you win, your transaction will pend for less than an hour. Withdrawals to e-wallets are fast, usually within an hour. Withdrawals to cards may take up to 24 hours, and bank transfers can take one to three days, depending on your bank.
How Do You Create a Bit Starz Account? Creating an account at Bit Starz is easy. Just click "Sign Up" on the website, enter your information, and verify your email address. You can only have one account per person, and your account can hold multiple currencies.
Is the Support Team Experienced? Bit Starz has a support team with at least three years of experience in casinos. They're available through live chat, so getting help is easy.
Can You Play for Free? Yes, you can play for free on Bit Starz. This lets you try out the games and find your favorites before betting real money.
What Kinds of Games Are There? Bit Starz offers a variety of games, including dice games, card games, roulette, and slots. They're divided into categories like "Slots" and "Table Games," so you can easily find what you're looking for.
In Conclusion Bit Starz stands out from other online casinos because it's provably fair, offers quick cash-outs, and has a wide range of games. Plus, you can play with Bitcoin, which is rare in casinos.

2024.05.10 00:59 Zaki_1052_ My Senior AP Week Reflection - Extremely Long (5 exams, 9 total)

My Senior AP Week Reflection - Extremely Long (5 exams, 9 total)
Context:
I took AP Gov, Chem, Lit, and CSA. I have Calc AB on Monday still (I’m a Senior). I got 5s on APUSH, Lang, HuG, and a three in Bio.
Predicting: Gov-5, Chem-3, Lit-5, CSA-4, Calc-3/2 (hopefully the former). This is going to be an extremely long post of a lot of thoughts, so if you want the tldr, paste it into an LLM.
  1. AP Chem:
The MCQ could really have been a LOT better, I don’t think I did well on that at all, but I think I did alright on the FRQ; I only skipped one part on the second to last question because I was running out of time. But yeah, everyone says the MCQ was just...not it.
Predicting a 3 for this one. Regrets: I wish I had gone over a bit more calorimetry; I thought I knew it but I was a bit rusty on thermo and also equilibrium. This was probably my worst of the four I took so far. I need a 3 for any course credit but a 4 will mean I place into OChem.
I’m used to answering a lot of MCQs like they’re math questions, so some of those definitely threw me off. But just generally, most people seem to have found the MCQ difficult so I think the curve will be decent this year.
Oh! Also, I should mention that this is my teacher's first year teaching - I think at all - as she mentioned having to shadow others at my school. She wasn't particularly good or bad, just kind of there. Kind of like AP Bio. This is the shortest one; there isn’t much to say except that it was difficult, but I passed.
I just regret not taking it last year because it was apparently super easy (and had an amazing teacher at my school). This was probably equivalent to my AP Bio Sophmore year (3), accounting for how much I studied of course (maybe not as much as I should have). Overall: decent, could've been better.
  1. AP Gov:
This was probably my best one, the MCQ was, like, insultingly easy. I took AP Human Geography a few years ago and thought that was the easiest possible exam, but this definitely takes the cake (same teacher btw). I’m probably just used to my teacher’s really bad wording and slightly opinionated multiple choice tests, but this was extremely clear and intuitive in comparison.
Can’t think of any I got wrong, but for the practice I got a few points off the final, this seemed slightly easier. I finished in just under half the time (40 minutes or so). Napped.
For the FRQ, I was pretty much relying on my experience from APUSH last year because we didn't do any in class (weird last minute schedule changes at my school and my teacher ran out of time to practice or really talk about it at all). Even so, I found these a lot easier than APUSH.
A lot of it was either common sense or something I just felt confident in. Humanities have always been my strongest (5 on HuG and APUSH), which is ironic because I'm a STEM major, but these FRQs were just easy.
Had a little under half time left when I finished and spent another 20 minutes looking over it, but I filled out a (kinda cramped) page per question for 1-3 and then an extra 2 pages on that last essay. Looks like I got Question Set 2 (they just released).
I used all the documents (apparently you don't need to, and there's not even a sophistication point??), and argued for social moments, using pluralism and factions from Fed 10 as my counterargument, and talking a LOT about the example of the CRM and MLK with the right to assemble and such.
Protests were already on my mind because I'm going to a UC and I just happened to argue with my parents about this for hours over the weekend, so I got lucky that was my Prompt. Overall definitely predicting a 5, would not be surprised if either I or my friend who I usually compete with got a perfect score (they're going to an Ivy).
  1. AP Lit:
I took this one online, and I already got a 5 on Lang so I apparently didn't even need to take it (found out after I submitted college apps and was looking at credit charts lol). Oh, taking it digital, we started about an hour late due to tech problems, which was annoying. But

I thought it was pretty decent! I really loved my teacher this year (hopefully my friends don't know my reddit account, but if so, yes I'm sorry he's very terrible). Overall just an amazing class experience.
Seriously though, the guy literally has a PhD in British Literature, he's amazingly insightful and I felt like I learned a lot this year; I definitely would not have gained as many skills as I did analyzing poetry without such a good teacher, and even my big prose essay happened to benefit, so it all worked out!
It just so happens that his two favorite pieces of literature are Hamlet and Madame Bovary. I used the latter for the prompt about missing something (specifically love), but Hamlet would have been great for indecision as well. I reused a lot of my points from our final about how when we think we achieve our desires we're never really satisfied, and how Emma was living in a fantasy world of fairy tale romance.
I also went over the blind beggar and how he saw the missing void in her heart, and how discomfited she was that he recognized that which she refused to — all her relationships were never true love — they were always purely sexual and all her spending and debt that she used to fill that piece of her spirit that was missing in marriage and religion would eventually drive her to suicide.
My teacher's honestly a bit Freudian (sorry, it's true!), but Hamlet obviously is probably even easier to talk about though I don't have the energy to plan another essay rn. Anyways, I'm fairly confident in a 5 for this one as well, even if a couple of the poems from the MCQ (dreams?) kinda threw me off.
Luckily, my teacher gave us a decent framework for setting up complex theses, and forewarned us that they'd ask us to connect the literary technique with the theme (literally our final), so I felt pretty prepared for the other FRQ. He suggested that we say something like:
"While on the surface, the poem appears to be about
, it is actually a vehicle for the author to
", or: "While most readers might conclude that
, on further inspection, the author actually...", which I thought was really smart for forcing yourself to think in complexity rather than giving an easy answer. I know it's a tad bit pretentious though!
My best friend is in the other AP Lit class with a different teacher, and his experience was vastly disparate to mine. Sounds like she tried -futiley- to teach to the exam, while mine went the approach of enhancing our overall Literature and analysis skills. I think you can infer which one I prefer.
Anyways, that one really all came down to the teacher, and I can definitely see how this one (especially the MCQ) could've been harder than last year, especially because while Lang was more SAT-like (790/800), this was decidedly not.
It's like, not even the questions that were bad, the answer choices were just such that you had to choose the least bad answer. Oh, and the nature/summertime thing was weird in that it was way too simple to talk about, but I managed like everyone else did.
  1. AP CSA:
This one was probably the one I'm most disappointed in myself for. I kind of expected a 3 on Chem (even if I was previously gunning for a 4), but I need a 4 for college credit in CompSci. Over the past year, I had gotten really into ML/AI, the former for my final Bioinformatics project on DNA Methylation, and the latter of which I actually learned JavaScript for. I already knew Python from my own curiosity, though I'm rusty and never took the class or exam.
That being said, I was pretty turned off by the teaching of CSE in general, though I'm not sure if that's the CSA class/exam or a more broad failing of just not knowing how to impart programming and make students want to do it (10 people took the exam at my school; there's a problem.).
Just the methodology of testing for it kinda made me hate it, even though I have a lot of fun coding on my own. The fact that MCQ is all about tracing code and is essentially math, where you're the computer and you're calculating what would be put into the compiler just seems stupid to me.
Regardless, from a student perspective, the MCQ was fine, as in I did well enough on it, not that I think it's a valid way to test, though I have no idea how else it would be. I was running slightly low on time, but I knew I would be, mainly because I hate how tedious it is even if the MCQ is technically easy (which it was).
Anyways, enough complaining. Onto the FRQ! It was...OK? Usually I'm pretty decent at writing code, classes and the like, but I wasn't quite expecting the specifications to be so weirdly worded. I guess it parallels the unclear expectations you receive doing CS jobs irl though, so that's fine. Also, last year was apparently harder?
Oh, I should mention that my teacher is retiring next year, so she was extremely checked out and the whole class was basically self-study on Runestone. I'll admit that as a Senior taking CSA as a 7th period, I found more important things to do than to practice writing code I thought I was pretty decent at, so that's definitely on me.
With that said, I didn't fully finish the last question of the FRQ, and while they weren't overly difficult generally, as in I could figure out the concepts they wanted (like math.random) and I managed to remember most of the syntax I had neglected, I definitely should have reviewed Arrays a bit more, as time was a big issue on this one.
Overall, I'm still predicting a 4 for CSA, but if I get unlucky with the curve I could get a 3, which would suck but still give me some course credit for college, just no exemption. My general review would be that it wasn't bad, it was even decent; the test on average was kinda like the Chem FRQ. That's all.
  1. Calc AB:
Obviously, this one is on Monday, so I haven't taken it yet, but I'd like to offer my predictions and thoughts. Math has always been my worst subject by far, but I'm trying for a 3 for college credit, as my Uni is offering a full ride for a month of summer where I can take the rest of Calc 101.
After that, I plan to just take a Semester's worth more of Math (up to Linear Algebra), and then be done. But to do that, I need to place and get a 3. When I took the final practice, I was exactly a point and a half below, so I have some more studying to do.
I should mention that my teacher this year for Calc AB is widely regarded as one of, if not the most, worst/hardest teacher at my school. It's definitely a weed out class, and most of my friends took it over the summer to place into BC with a good teacher rather than suffer my current one.
While I would usually differentiate between a bad teacher and a hard one (my Lit is the perfect example of the latter but not the former), Calc AB is both. I've never felt comfortable asking questions to her, she frequently blows off students, and her attitude just generally makes me hate math even more than I already did.
This year has been a lot of self-study and torture, so I'm really gunning for that 3 to prove her (and myself) wrong. I'm actually taking the class P/F because it does horrible things to my GPA (4.3 instead of 4.66). Anyways, wish me luck on this one!
  1. APUSH:
I took APUSH and Lang last year, and while I didn't really feel the need to study for my 5 in Lang, APUSH was my most difficult class that I probably studied for the most, but my teacher Junior year was probably the best I've ever had, or at least my favorite of all time (my current AP Lit might be technically better).
Yeah, my APUSH teacher really encouraged me to push through on that class and sincerely made me interested in US History. He's also probably why I did so well in AP Gov, so I owe him a “Thank You” when I get back. I ended up applying UCs, which doesn't take rec letters obviously, but if I had requested one, he would definitely be it!
Anyways, I know an amazing teacher isn't possible for most people, but I wish everyone luck on their APUSH Exam on Friday; you can do it!! I got a 5 when I worked for it, and you can too!
7-9. Other APs: Bio, etc,
There isn't much to say about Lang or AP Human Geography. I found them both pretty easy, intuitive, and common sense. Prepare, of course (specifically for the course content of the latter), but they're both guarenteed 5s if you put the work in.
For AP Bio, that was the biggest regret of my high school career. It's actually my major (Biology: Bioinformatics), and I got a 3. I just know I was close to a 4, but also that it was partly my fault for letting bad study habits from COVID bleed into the beginning of my Sophmore year, and I never really caught up.
AP Bio is one of those courses where you need to be prepared from the get-go, especially if your teacher has a somewhat lax but competent teaching style. Not to make excuses for myself or anything, but I actually got COVID the week before, missed my AP HuG Exam (had to do the retake), and recovered the day before the AP Bio.
My brain and studying were just not up to par at all, and I'm confident that if I had worked as hard as I did for APUSH the year after, I definitely would've gotten a 4 or even a 5. So, I wish everyone luck as well on Bio next Thursday, and hope you're prepared!
Conclusion:
For everyone else, I'll be lurking next week around this sub after I take Calc, and I'm confident in everyone to do their best! I'll probably turn off my notifs tomorrow afternoon, so if anyone has questions before then feel free to ask and I'll attempt to respond! Congrats if you got this far in the post, lol, and I hope it was helpful!
