2024.05.16 17:26 zedadex Thing is...

It just makes sense to plan around this stuff
  • LA is building rail infra, ahead of the 2028 Olympics. (Buy in '25, sell in '28?)
    • Studying: Learn langs; study remotely albeit hopefully with a nice library.
    • Finances: Investing in the area; speculatively, seems like the move. In general, I haven't been growing my finances enough; the play "yesterday" was indices (you'd think... ah well šŸ˜…). The play "today" is calculated aggro risks. (I don't think that using expansion plans to pick where to invest is even aggro? Just seems like a long play lol)
      • More importantly, figure out where I could see myself living for at least 3y. 2y study, 3y proj mgmt cert (If I go for at current job.)
    • Career: Branch out of tech focus; build "the story" and use it to leverage into a job that helps me develop personally and professional-skills-ly. (Data, meh; there's also PM'ing. Do we have a shortage? Is that the case everywhere?)
      • I know I need to do this for myself anyways; might as well get brownie points for doing that work for him.
    • Lifestyle: Should give me a chance to get into a healthy rhythm; I can re-find a gym and social circles there based on common interests.
    • [...]: Lang studies in-person until I'm well enough along to learn online. Keep to the Plan. (Holly's "Spooky imitation of Artemis" quote as thought in interstitial space as one of many examples of that whole 'echoic memory for certain lines' thing. I swear that's prolly a thing in neurosci; resonance and such)
  • SEA: Buying ahead of The Big One would suck; and I'm already 50/50 on going back. Maybe buy after; be part of the rebuild.
    • Having been back... (I seriously need time away. Lol. Fuck that guy) (Evidence from semi-trusted sources and logical level indicate that I might be making a hasty emotional decision; distance was/is a good idea so secure time off.)
      • play the game; you're already "in" (kinda) or at least in a situation that could be worse. (Decent life philosophy -> remember what you still have. Kenny gets it!) long-term game (out of necessity; might as well be better positioned to make career moves.) I'm at the right level to make moves internally - coach under geoff), but short term, I could definitely use a break.
  • JP: '25 Expo could be a nice trip, but at this point I can't do both and pursue DE. Vacay could (and most likely will) be a pivot after we ask [...], probably-get heartbroken (yay!), and can do that to feel better. (...Yay-but-actually! šŸ¤£)
    • I'm pretty sure that wouldn't be enough. Vacays take me OUT of a routine. I feel better IN routines.
  • NO/DE: (Lol, Node): Pending other developments. Likely NO in either case. Could go FR?
SEA was good, but... it's really just surrounding myself with people, activities, opportunities. I can do that most anywhere.
What do you think, Mudkip? :pokes cheek, Zee giggles happily: [...] Dw, I like water too, bud. We can stay close to it for now. ^^

2024.05.16 17:23 TruNorth556 At one time our leaders in the west took the threat of nuclear conflict seriously. Now we have Biden tossing around regime change and European allies escalating recklessly.

Professor Woodrow Wilson once said that every man sent out from a university should be a man of his nation as well as a man of his time, and I am confident that the men and women who carry the honor of graduating from this institution will continue to give from their lives, from their talents, a high measure of public service and public support.
"There are few earthly things more beautiful than a university," wrote John Masefield in his tribute to English universities--and his words are equally true today. He did not refer to spires and towers, to campus greens and ivied walls. He admired the splendid beauty of the university, he said, because it was "a place where those who hate ignorance may strive to know, where those who perceive truth may strive to make others see."
I have, therefore, chosen this time and this place to discuss a topic on which ignorance too often abounds and the truth is too rarely perceived--yet it is the most important topic on earth: world peace.
What kind of peace do I mean? What kind of peace do we seek? Not a Pax Americana enforced on the world by American weapons of war. Not the peace of the grave or the security of the slave. I am talking about genuine peace, the kind of peace that makes life on earth worth living, the kind that enables men and nations to grow and to hope and to build a better life for their children--not merely peace for Americans but peace for all men and women--not merely peace in our time but peace for all time.
I speak of peace because of the new face of war. Total war makes no sense in an age when great powers can maintain large and relatively invulnerable nuclear forces and refuse to surrender without resort to those forces. It makes no sense in an age when a single nuclear weapon contains almost ten times the explosive force delivered by all the allied air forces in the Second World War. It makes no sense in an age when the deadly poisons produced by a nuclear exchange would be carried by wind and water and soil and seed to the far corners of the globe and to generations yet unborn.
Today the expenditure of billions of dollars every year on weapons acquired for the purpose of making sure we never need to use them is essential to keeping the peace. But surely the acquisition of such idle stockpiles--which can only destroy and never create--is not the only, much less the most efficient, means of assuring peace.
I speak of peace, therefore, as the necessary rational end of rational men. I realize that the pursuit of peace is not as dramatic as the pursuit of war--and frequently the words of the pursuer fall on deaf ears. But we have no more urgent task.
Some say that it is useless to speak of world peace or world law or world disarmament--and that it will be useless until the leaders of the Soviet Union adopt a more enlightened attitude. I hope they do. I believe we can help them do it. But I also believe that we must reexamine our own attitude--as individuals and as a Nation--for our attitude is as essential as theirs. And every graduate of this school, every thoughtful citizen who despairs of war and wishes to bring peace, should begin by looking inward--by examining his own attitude toward the possibilities of peace, toward the Soviet Union, toward the course of the cold war and toward freedom and peace here at home.
First: Let us examine our attitude toward peace itself. Too many of us think it is impossible. Too many think it unreal. But that is a dangerous, defeatist belief. It leads to the conclusion that war is inevitable--that mankind is doomed--that we are gripped by forces we cannot control.
We need not accept that view. Our problems are manmade--therefore, they can be solved by man. And man can be as big as he wants. No problem of human destiny is beyond human beings. Man's reason and spirit have often solved the seemingly unsolvable--and we believe they can do it again.
I am not referring to the absolute, infinite concept of peace and good will of which some fantasies and fanatics dream. I do not deny the value of hopes and dreams but we merely invite discouragement and incredulity by making that our only and immediate goal.
Let us focus instead on a more practical, more attainable peace-- based not on a sudden revolution in human nature but on a gradual evolution in human institutions--on a series of concrete actions and effective agreements which are in the interest of all concerned. There is no single, simple key to this peace--no grand or magic formula to be adopted by one or two powers. Genuine peace must be the product of many nations, the sum of many acts. It must be dynamic, not static, changing to meet the challenge of each new generation. For peace is a process--a way of solving problems.
With such a peace, there will still be quarrels and conflicting interests, as there are within families and nations. World peace, like community peace, does not require that each man love his neighbor--it requires only that they live together in mutual tolerance, submitting their disputes to a just and peaceful settlement. And history teaches us that enmities between nations, as between individuals, do not last forever. However fixed our likes and dislikes may seem, the tide of time and events will often bring surprising changes in the relations between nations and neighbors.
So let us persevere. Peace need not be impracticable, and war need not be inevitable. By defining our goal more clearly, by making it seem more manageable and less remote, we can help all peoples to see it, to draw hope from it, and to move irresistibly toward it.
Second: Let us reexamine our attitude toward the Soviet Union. It is discouraging to think that their leaders may actually believe what their propagandists write. It is discouraging to read a recent authoritative Soviet text on Military Strategy and find, on page after page, wholly baseless and incredible claims--such as the allegation that "American imperialist circles are preparing to unleash different types of wars . . . that there is a very real threat of a preventive war being unleashed by American imperialists against the Soviet Union . . . [and that] the political aims of the American imperialists are to enslave economically and politically the European and other capitalist countries . . . [and] to achieve world domination . . . by means of aggressive wars."
Truly, as it was written long ago: "The wicked flee when no man pursueth." Yet it is sad to read these Soviet statements--to realize the extent of the gulf between us. But it is also a warning--a warning to the American people not to fall into the same trap as the Soviets, not to see only a distorted and desperate view of the other side, not to see conflict as inevitable, accommodation as impossible, and communication as nothing more than an exchange of threats.
No government or social system is so evil that its people must be considered as lacking in virtue. As Americans, we find communism profoundly repugnant as a negation of personal freedom and dignity. But we can still hail the Russian people for their many achievements--in science and space, in economic and industrial growth, in culture and in acts of courage.
Among the many traits the peoples of our two countries have in common, none is stronger than our mutual abhorrence of war. Almost unique among the major world powers, we have never been at war with each other. And no nation in the history of battle ever suffered more than the Soviet Union suffered in the course of the Second World War. At least 20 million lost their lives. Countless millions of homes and farms were burned or sacked. A third of the nation's territory, including nearly two thirds of its industrial base, was turned into a wasteland--a loss equivalent to the devastation of this country east of Chicago.
Today, should total war ever break out again--no matter how--our two countries would become the primary targets. It is an ironic but accurate fact that the two strongest powers are the two in the most danger of devastation. All we have built, all we have worked for, would be destroyed in the first 24 hours. And even in the cold war, which brings burdens and dangers to so many nations, including this Nation's closest allies--our two countries bear the heaviest burdens. For we are both devoting massive sums of money to weapons that could be better devoted to combating ignorance, poverty, and disease. We are both caught up in a vicious and dangerous cycle in which suspicion on one side breeds suspicion on the other, and new weapons beget counterweapons.
In short, both the United States and its allies, and the Soviet Union and its allies, have a mutually deep interest in a just and genuine peace and in halting the arms race. Agreements to this end are in the interests of the Soviet Union as well as ours--and even the most hostile nations can be relied upon to accept and keep those treaty obligations, and only those treaty obligations, which are in their own interest.
So, let us not be blind to our differences--but let us also direct attention to our common interests and to the means by which those differences can be resolved. And if we cannot end now our differences, at least we can help make the world safe for diversity. For, in the final analysis, our most basic common link is that we all inhabit this small planet. We all breathe the same air. We all cherish our children's future. And we are all mortal.
Third: Let us reexamine our attitude toward the cold war, remembering that we are not engaged in a debate, seeking to pile up debating points. We are not here distributing blame or pointing the finger of judgment. We must deal with the world as it is, and not as it might have been had the history of the last 18 years been different.
We must, therefore, persevere in the search for peace in the hope that constructive changes within the Communist bloc might bring within reach solutions which now seem beyond us. We must conduct our affairs in such a way that it becomes in the Communists' interest to agree on a genuine peace. Above all, while defending our own vital interests, nuclear powers must avert those confrontations which bring an adversary to a choice of either a humiliating retreat or a nuclear war. To adopt that kind of course in the nuclear age would be evidence only of the bankruptcy of our policy--or of a collective death-wish for the world.
To secure these ends, America's weapons are nonprovocative, carefully controlled, designed to deter, and capable of selective use. Our military forces are committed to peace and disciplined in self- restraint. Our diplomats are instructed to avoid unnecessary irritants and purely rhetorical hostility.
For we can seek a relaxation of tension without relaxing our guard. And, for our part, we do not need to use threats to prove that we are resolute. We do not need to jam foreign broadcasts out of fear our faith will be eroded. We are unwilling to impose our system on any unwilling people--but we are willing and able to engage in peaceful competition with any people on earth.
Meanwhile, we seek to strengthen the United Nations, to help solve its financial problems, to make it a more effective instrument for peace, to develop it into a genuine world security system--a system capable of resolving disputes on the basis of law, of insuring the security of the large and the small, and of creating conditions under which arms can finally be abolished.
At the same time we seek to keep peace inside the non-Communist world, where many nations, all of them our friends, are divided over issues which weaken Western unity, which invite Communist intervention or which threaten to erupt into war. Our efforts in West New Guinea, in the Congo, in the Middle East, and in the Indian subcontinent, have been persistent and patient despite criticism from both sides. We have also tried to set an example for others--by seeking to adjust small but significant differences with our own closest neighbors in Mexico and in Canada.
Speaking of other nations, I wish to make one point clear. We are bound to many nations by alliances. Those alliances exist because our concern and theirs substantially overlap. Our commitment to defend Western Europe and West Berlin, for example, stands undiminished because of the identity of our vital interests. The United States will make no deal with the Soviet Union at the expense of other nations and other peoples, not merely because they are our partners, but also because their interests and ours converge.
Our interests converge, however, not only in defending the frontiers of freedom, but in pursuing the paths of peace. It is our hope-- and the purpose of allied policies--to convince the Soviet Union that she, too, should let each nation choose its own future, so long as that choice does not interfere with the choices of others. The Communist drive to impose their political and economic system on others is the primary cause of world tension today. For there can be no doubt that, if all nations could refrain from interfering in the self-determination of others, the peace would be much more assured.
This will require a new effort to achieve world law--a new context for world discussions. It will require increased understanding between the Soviets and ourselves. And increased understanding will require increased contact and communication. One step in this direction is the proposed arrangement for a direct line between Moscow and Washington, to avoid on each side the dangerous delays, misunderstandings, and misreadings of the other's actions which might occur at a time of crisis.
We have also been talking in Geneva about the other first-step measures of arms control designed to limit the intensity of the arms race and to reduce the risks of accidental war. Our primary long range interest in Geneva, however, is general and complete disarmament-- designed to take place by stages, permitting parallel political developments to build the new institutions of peace which would take the place of arms. The pursuit of disarmament has been an effort of this Government since the 1920's. It has been urgently sought by the past three administrations. And however dim the prospects may be today, we intend to continue this effort--to continue it in order that all countries, including our own, can better grasp what the problems and possibilities of disarmament are.
The one major area of these negotiations where the end is in sight, yet where a fresh start is badly needed, is in a treaty to outlaw nuclear tests. The conclusion of such a treaty, so near and yet so far, would check the spiraling arms race in one of its most dangerous areas. It would place the nuclear powers in a position to deal more effectively with one of the greatest hazards which man faces in 1963, the further spread of nuclear arms. It would increase our security--it would decrease the prospects of war. Surely this goal is sufficiently important to require our steady pursuit, yielding neither to the temptation to give up the whole effort nor the temptation to give up our insistence on vital and responsible safeguards.
I am taking this opportunity, therefore, to announce two important decisions in this regard.
First: Chairman Khrushchev, Prime Minister Macmillan, and I have agreed that high-level discussions will shortly begin in Moscow looking toward early agreement on a comprehensive test ban treaty. Our hopes must be tempered with the caution of history--but with our hopes go the hopes of all mankind.
Second: To make clear our good faith and solemn convictions on the matter, I now declare that the United States does not propose to conduct nuclear tests in the atmosphere so long as other states do not do so. We will not be the first to resume. Such a declaration is no substitute for a formal binding treaty, but I hope it will help us achieve one. Nor would such a treaty be a substitute for disarmament, but I hope it will help us achieve it.
Finally, my fellow Americans, let us examine our attitude toward peace and freedom here at home. The quality and spirit of our own society must justify and support our efforts abroad. We must show it in the dedication of our own lives--as many of you who are graduating today will have a unique opportunity to do, by serving without pay in the Peace Corps abroad or in the proposed National Service Corps here at home.
But wherever we are, we must all, in our daily lives, live up to the age-old faith that peace and freedom walk together. In too many of our cities today, the peace is not secure because the freedom is incomplete.
It is the responsibility of the executive branch at all levels of government--local, State, and National--to provide and protect that freedom for all of our citizens by all means within their authority. It is the responsibility of the legislative branch at all levels, wherever that authority is not now adequate, to make it adequate. And it is the responsibility of all citizens in all sections of this country to respect the rights of all others and to respect the law of the land.
All this is not unrelated to world peace. "When a man's ways please the Lord," the Scriptures tell us, "he maketh even his enemies to be at peace with him." And is not peace, in the last analysis, basically a matter of human rights--the right to live out our lives without fear of devastation--the right to breathe air as nature provided it--the right of future generations to a healthy existence?
While we proceed to safeguard our national interests, let us also safeguard human interests. And the elimination of war and arms is clearly in the interest of both. No treaty, however much it may be to the advantage of all, however tightly it may be worded, can provide absolute security against the risks of deception and evasion. But it can--if it is sufficiently effective in its enforcement and if it is sufficiently in the interests of its signers--offer far more security and far fewer risks than an unabated, uncontrolled, unpredictable arms race.
The United States, as the world knows, will never start a war. We do not want a war. We do not now expect a war. This generation of Americans has already had enough--more than enough--of war and hate and oppression. We shall be prepared if others wish it. We shall be alert to try to stop it. But we shall also do our part to build a world of peace where the weak are safe and the strong are just. We are not helpless before that task or hopeless of its success. Confident and unafraid, we labor on--not toward a strategy of annihilation but toward a strategy of peace.

2024.05.16 17:20 portrayu Fosi Audio V3 Mono Amplifier.

Fosi Audio V3 Mono Amplifier.
Here is my review of the Fosi Audio V3 Mono Amplifier.
https://preview.redd.it/xubrhhrk2t0d1.jpg?width=1000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=98557e8478c6efae49c8fae6b35a9ae8ffd50ba4
I am not an audiophile or a tech expert so if you want in depth tech reviews, Iā€™m sure you will find them online.
What I am is a consumer, a bit of a technophile but mainly I love my music and want to enjoy it as best as I can afford to.
My equipment is an old Denon X3800 H receiver which is configured as a 7.1 Dolby Atmos setup for cinema but for music I either use stereo or multichannel stereo. I havenā€™t found a lot of Atmos music around especially for my choice of music which tends toward rock, rock & roll and blues from the 50,60, 70 and 80ā€™s which I like with the volume turned up.
The speakers are even older Monitor Bronze which have served me well except for two Alteco Dali Atmos speakers of more recent vintage.
My favourite setup in the summer is to take the main floor standers, a pair MONITOR AUDIO BRONZE B4 speakers: Frequency Response: 36Hz-22KHz, Sensitivity: 91dB, 6 Ohms,150W, outside to my BBQ area which I have wired to listen to them while relaxing. The Denon has served me well, but on occasion felt it was lacking in volume and definition.
Thus, the Addition of a pair of Fosi Audio V3 Mono Amplifiers which Fosi kindly sent me to review. No, this review is not biased because of this.
The Fosi Audio V3 Mono Amplifier is tiny, well for me anyway. It features controls for on/off/trigger audio and selection of XLR vs RCA inputs, for which I chose to use the XLR inputs as these are a common professional standard connector for noise reduction. Yes, totally new to me but you live and learn even at my age (69) besides I only had some cheap RCA cables and If I was going to purchase new, it might as well be quality.
On unboxing I was delighted to see the size of these amps, amazingly small. Not so small are the power supplies of which there are two 48v 5amp. Which is a bit of a contrast to the amps. To need two there must be a reason for this I guess but I wonder if its possible to have one with separate rails for each amp. Production costs maybe? Or early days.
I unplugged the speakers and connected them to the amps and put the XLR cables (RCA on the preamp side) in the front speaker preamp outputs on the Denon, powered everything up, selected stereo and played a Rolling Stones track from my iphone.
Wow.
I was blown away. I have never heard these speakers sound like this before. What I had been lacking in sound quality was there and the volume increase also. A pleasantly surprise from these small amps.
I set them up next with the Audessy MultEQ app and have them configured to work with in my cinema setup. While not quite as distinctive they incorporate well and is a definite improvement on the previous setup but I think with a bit of fine tuning there is room for improvement.
I recently returned the Fosi BT20A Pro Amp as it didnā€™t power the speakers as I hoped but I might buy another as it would have made a lovely preamp especially with its Bluetooth 5.
Iā€™m now a committed Fosi fan happily listening to my music better than before

2024.05.16 17:18 LastKardax Reflecting on Novelty and Design in TFT Sets: Insights and Thoughts on the Past and Future. (From a nobody's perspective)

Hey everyone! I'm a TFT streamer and Competitive player, hit challenger every set since 4 (not this set! I'll tell you why). I've never posted on Reddit, but I felt like I had too many things I wanted to break down and have a conversation about. These thoughts were just too much for a Twitter post, and I'm really curious to hear how everyone else in the community feels :)!
Disclaimer: I love everyone at the TFT team, and have immense respect for everyone on it, and I know for a fact they all strive to make a product they are proud of. This post is out of love for the game.
  1. Novelty in TFT / Set Mechanics: Regarding Novelty in TFT / Set Mechanics: In recent sets, it's clear that the TFT team is determined to create unique and memorable moments for players, which I appreciate. However, in their pursuit of these moments, they seem to have lost sight of the essence that made TFT so magical from the start.
We can all agree that Set 10 was a huge breath of fresh air coming off the turbo-boring set that was 9.5 where everyone equipped URF legend and popped tome 2-1 and prayed. Set 10 is, in my opinion, one of the greatest sets ever designed. Everything aligned perfectly and harmoniously (music pun!), the unit and trait design was near flawless, the set mechanic was a huge upgrade to Set 4/4.5's Chosen mechanic, and the 5 Costs really did feel like premium units. It was a homerun for TFT. (The numbers show that too for all you numbers people)
Moving on from 10 and coming into 11. It was glaring to me that in an attempt to reach the destination of creating novel moments in TFT they took the wrong road. Encounters might just be one of the worst types of game mechanics to ever exist (second only to shadow items). It's a disaster lottery draw every single time it shows up that you dread won't destroy the path that you calculated was the most optimal path based on what you've gotten so far in terms of units, items, augments, etc... The main reason why Encounters are bad game design is because they take away player agency in an unhealthy way. That doesn't mean that there can't be potential encounter type mechanics that borrow player agency that are healthy. It just means this one is bad. It's a lot of quantity over quality and it leaves the player in this weird middle-ground where they're not too impactful to create a sense of excitement and awe when they pop up, but they're just useful enough to be extremely annoying when they don't benefit you at all, and accelerate other people's boards. (Obviously this isn't ALL encounters, but definitely most)
  1. Unit and Trait design: Set 11 brings some of the most lackluster / boring feeling units and traits I've ever had the un-pleasure of playing. If you named all your favorite TFT units / Traits of all time do you think any of set 11's Units / Traits would make it into your S-Tier category? (Maybe Lissandra, but she's just a worse Set 6 Tahm Kench lets be real) and apart from the idea behind Exalted (It needs more work, but can be an amazing way of introducing infinite comps) not much in Set 11 stands out to me on that front. I'll delve deeper into a few things I don't want to bloat this post, but just know there's a lot more. Kayle is one of, if not the worst summon unit we've ever had in TFT. The idea behind build your own summon unit is fantastic and I genuinely hope they give this another go, but the execution was suboptimal at best. Sets 3 / 4 / 6 / 10 All had extremely life-like and memorable summons Giant Mech Garen that thrusts down sword into the arena, Giant Galio slamming into the arena and punching units to death, Bears and dragons to buff your team and fight alongside you, and even a Hecarim that gallops onto your board and buffs your team and slashes enemies. Summoned units SHOULD feel, sound, and look impactful, and not act like any unit I could buy from the store. Or else they just end up being a glorified 2 cost. Stats aside (I love stats, but this post isn't about them), my primary aim is to ensure a fun game before delving into statistical analysis. Kayle feels like a filler unit that you mostly just plop in the back and forget about, doesn't do much unless you hit the crazy (mostly unobtainable) 10 Piece trait. Speaking of unobtainable traits. It seems to me the TFT team has come up with this bandage solution of gatekeeping a lot of really fun and exciting moments behind these extremely hard-to-obtain 9-10 Piece traits. We've never had this issue in TFT; why are we now gatekeeping a lot of the exciting moments behind 100+ hours of playtime. You can tone down a lot of the exciting moments, and still keep them accessible, but challenging to obtain. You've done this for the longest time; why fix something that isn't broken. Personally, I think there needs to be a revaluation of what makes a Set engaging and fun, and what players really want to see and play around with for hundreds of hours way before you start delving into the mindset of "How do we add as much divergence, nuance, and novelty". Those roads can meet and intertwine, but they aren't the same road.
  2. Items, Augments, and Orbs!: Items - Here's a little brain exercise for everyone, what would happen in TFT if we removed all item components, and strictly dropped only Ornn anvils all game? (Take a minute to think before you click the spoiler!) If you guessed it would ensue chaos, bugs, and a balancing nightmare. OR be a hell of a lot of fun! you'd be correct both ways! (New portal idea!/s) Luckily for us, that isn't the case. However, I do think we've reached a point with items where we're too comfortable with what they wish to achieve on units, and this creates a dynamic where TFT units are always being designed with items in mind, and how the items would make the unit work. Rather than creating fun and engaging units in a vacuum and worrying about the items later. It's a scary prospect to experiment with the tried and true (Think back to Set 7 when they made Rage-wing trait experimenting with units that had a different fuel source than mana, but it was a total miss or when they created the dreaded Shadow items), but it's just food for thought. Just because you didn't get it right once, doesn't mean the idea is flawed, just means you didn't get it right that one time. A time where you definitely did get it right however, is Radiant items Look how those turned out! Some of the most beloved items of all time. This is sort of what they wanted to achieve with the new expansion to the Ornn anvil items, and support items. It's definitely a step in the right direction, but can definitely be explored more.
Augments - Augments really was a happy little accidental shift in TFT's life cycle. They created the perfect concoction of how to add an almost infinite amount of variability to a game that was missing just that. (Which also adds to why Encounters are redundant and frustrating) Since then they've time and time again created really fun and engaging augments each set, that without I'm almost certain TFT wouldn't be as popular as it is. Please keep doing this, this is really good. Another little thought exercise before we continue. What would happen if most of the Encounters were just turned into Augments instead? (Think a little before you click spoiler!) If You guessed it would just create a healthier way of interacting with said encounters. You'd be correct!
If you're trying to create a new set mechanic (encounters) it shouldn't overlap with something that already exists that's just better than the new thing you're trying to create (augments). However, getting back on track. It does feel like things have gotten a little too comfortable in the Augment space, and feels like there hasn't been much room for innovative change. There's an untapped reservoir right in front of you of infinite variability at your disposal. Why aren't you experimenting harder, instead of looking for other means of adding variability that will always be suboptimal to the one you've already created almost 6 Sets ago...?
Soft Sample Examples: A new type of Augment called Radiant Augments that provide a wide range of very strong / borderline insane combinations of items and stats, but the catch is after every player combat if you lose you can choose if you want to swap your Radiant augment with the player you just faced. (Like multiple random hexes of strong stats, or 3 tailored Orrn items / Support items, or given 3 zephyrs and knowing who you're fighting next or given a 2Star-dragon that adopts your top-most trait?!) (The design space is infinite)
Orbs - Lastly, I'd like to talk about Orbs! Orbs are a lot better, good job! That's all I have to say :)!
Thank you for reading this far into my post if you have. Again, this comes from an immense love for the game and the people creating it. I have nothing but positive interactions with Mortdog on Twitter / Discord and would appreciate if you guys keep it civil and friendly :)! I really do have a lot more thoughts, and things I'd love to share, but I feel like I've already bloated this post a lot! (Assassins, Higher Cost units than 5, Midsets, system changes, loot management, meta knowledge, Portals etc..)
I've just been really bored playing this set, and that's the reason I've retired from seriously competing or climbing for this one set, and I'm very keen to read what other people have to say about my thoughts, and looking forward to discussing it thank you!

2024.05.16 17:11 Ok_Gold3456 Wholesale options

I manage a brick and mortar vape shop and we are trying to venture into skate culture a bit more. I realize it is very hard to get skate products even for skate shops. However we do have an account with ripndip and some of our distros also have skate products from random hemp and vape companies. The main things we can't get from ripndip are trucks and bearings. Does anybody know a skate distro that's not trying to gatekeep? Skating is huge where I'm from and the only place to buy skate products here taxes like crazy. I'm trying to bring more affordable skate products to a rather poor area of the state but no wholesaler will bite.

2024.05.16 17:01 Virtual_Mud7741 Is it really realistic to earn 5million-13million for a beauty brand that just started like 2 years ago? (Rosmar)

Hello everyone! I am currently a business student and just purely curious. I would be happy to learn and understand things so feel free to share your thoughts. Positive or negative. Let me learn from you respectfully.
I saw this article where this Rosmar (I don't know much about her honestly as I don't watch local TV or use any socmed that much) claimed in an interview with Toni that she earns 5M-13M in a DAY. Let me repeat in a DAY. Sounds inspiring and stuff like that bla bla but something feels off.
In my personal perspective, I am crazy with beauty products, focus on skincare (I don't wear make up that much). I am avid buyer online in different platforms and apps on my phone and its my ritual whenever I visit malls to check out Watsons/Sm Dept/Rustans, etc.
First, I don't know her brand (not aware?) and it doesn't look reliable to me. I don't even see it at malls that much or maybe an independent store or any presence like how Avon is marketed. Even in trusted online store like Sephora ph, BeautyMNL, beautyshopph, or even in watsons online, I don't see it? It's in Shopee and Lazada though but I dont fully trust products there with usually no FDA approval. I do use those apps a lot for different products coz it's cheap. So, overall, her brand doesn't have that solid exposure in the general public to be a household name that you can assume can cater a big number of consumers. Other than cringe reels of hers I see time to time when i scroll in youtube randomly, that's it. Even commercials? Or billboards (maybe I'm just not aware because I don't go out that much)
Second, the timeframe. Based on the things I read, in average, a good managed started up company can possibly earn millions in 3-5years, lots of factors, it varries. I only heard her name around after pandemic, with the economic issues the country have previously. If she say a million in a couple of months, maybe I'll believe it like 30% but does her company export outside that big to say that?
Third, her house is extravagant indeed with sport cars she boasts but the way she act and how she organised her household, it kinda gives me the feels of somebody who won lotto one day and just picked up a random mansion. Her mannerisms and the way she speaks is off. She doesnt even give a nepo baby vibes with rich parents as well or i just dont know. Successful hardworking CEOs stories that I see choose to customised and build their house on their own and you can feel how aura of someone who put their blood and sweat on their business. Forgive me if I'm judgmental but she doesn't sound like someone skillful by experience. I used to watched OFW stories who didn't have education and yet through practical skills they can specifically explain how they expanded their business. But in her shoes, it's like magic and like it just boomed one day.
I heard she stuff lots of cash in her house as well and she buy big things in cash. Now that's really suspicious to me. Someone rich would rather put it in a bank and pay in cheque for super big purchase.
To all struggling business owners out there. I salute you. I aspire to build my own in the near future too but I'm pretty sure it's a journey of trial and error and lots of never giving up. Cheers!

2024.05.16 16:55 StillIDie The recent changes to LoL are made by the people in suits. Not the people who create games as a passion.

League has been one of the biggest games in the world for well over a decade. Each and everyone one of you reading this have a favorite time in league where the game was just perfect for you. If you are a jungle fan, you loved season 6. An ADC fan loved Season 7, ADC haters loved season 8 etc..
But the changes recently to me seem a bit disconnected. I will try to not speak like the "devs" are the ones behind it, because you code whatever the boss tells you to code, and the boss has their own boss telling them we need more profit, more turn over, better statistics etc..
It has come to a point where you as the player are not even seen as important, and you have been edited out of this relationship you have with the game. You are no longer a SUMMONER because that has been edited out with LORE changes.
You are no longer a player anymore, you are just a statistic.
Every change that is made outside of the actual in game stuff, like the Mastery Changes, the Ranked Split changes, demotion, LP delta between wins and losses are made by the people in suits.
They need you to be in that chair playing league every hour of the day. They don't care about you. You are no longer important.
They ask for feedback around any change they are planning, just to give you the illusion that you somehow matter, and then even if you heavily dislike something, they will add it either way.
Even the cosmetics are affected. When I started to play league, I would happily drop 10$ every now and then to get myself a 975 high quality skin that looked fun. Special Forces Gangplank, Pool Party Renekton, High Noon Yasuo. Really cool Unique skins. It would leave me with some left over RP to get skins on sale, or just save for the next skin to buy. Now every skin is 1350 RP and there are reused assets everywhere with a different color and slightly different VFX. Skins are not made with passion anymore. They are not fun anymore. They are designed only with $$$ in mind.
Even the BattlePass nerfs over the years. Every time they make a change they see complaints about it on forums. Do they take that into consideration for the next change they plan? Nope. Keep nerfing it. Then add some stupid comment like "We thought players would like it better".
With regards to the battlepass, here is something I dont see talked about. Why is the battlepass exactly 1680 RP? Because the 10$ RP Purchase is not enough. You would need to buy RP twice for 10$ and 5$ or just give them the extra money to buy 20$ worth of RP for the inconvenience . Its a small thing but its designed that way to force you to spend more money unless you want to click more through the client.
You made Diamond with 4 kids and basically no free time, enjoy the decay my friend. We dont give you an award for the highest rank you got to, we give you awards based on where you finish. Don't care about your kids, come play league. Your time and personal life means nothing to us.
Even the "devs" themselves are getting fired and replaced by third party companies for their own jobs. More profit. More turnover.
The esports side has taken a massive step back in terms of production. More profit. More turnover.
All in all, I don't hate the "devs". I understand what is happening. Its the people in suits and its going to continue to get worse.
Maybe if we stop buying stuff, you might actually be seen as a human again, instead of a statistic. But knowing this playerbase, you will continue to buy stuff, you will continue to grind 10.000 hours for some mastery points and you will try to act happy with it, when you know it makes you miserable.

2024.05.16 16:48 steve-94728-3957 AITA for buying an old car?

I (28M) just recently bought an old truck from the mid 1980s. My girlfriend (23F) doesnā€™t approve and wishes she had talked me out of it.
I got it about two weeks ago. As expected, there were a few minor things wrong with it but nothing huge. For context: I drove it eleven hours back home from where I bought it and didnā€™t encounter any issues along the way. The largest things were 1) it needed some brake work done and 2) the windshield was badly cracked in a few areas. Before I bought it, I asked my girlfriend for her opinion (but not her approval) and she said ā€œif you like it, go for it! Itā€™s coolā€. Once I got home, I immediately got the brakes fixed (the now work perfectly) and I got a new windshield, along with other small cosmetic things Iā€™ve already done. Now, two weeks later, she randomly went off on me last night, saying things such as:
ā€œI really wish you hadnā€™t bought the truckā€
ā€œI wish I had talked you out of itā€
ā€œItā€™s in such bad condition. The brakes donā€™t work, it has no airbagsā€
She kept re-using the brake and windshield line over and over, even after me telling her I already got them fixed. She thinks that bc I bought it with bad brakes, that theyā€™re ā€œpermanently disabledā€ and will break again. She also doesnā€™t like the fact that there are no airbags (it didnā€™t originally come with airbags).
Now she wants me to get rid of it, and Iā€™ll do no such thing. I already have a nice car to drive everyday, this is just a second car. I got it so I can have something to wrench on on the weekends. She thinks I should got something ā€œnewerā€ and ā€œsaferā€ if I had wanted a second car. She also thinks I didnā€™t have a valid reason to buy it; my philosophy is that you donā€™t need a reason to buy anything. I bought it bc I wanted it and it makes me happy.
Context on relationship: dating for one year and three months, but were friends for a while before then. Has always been a strong, healthy relationship, and are considering moving in together later this year.
She thinks sheā€™s being practical and logical, I think sheā€™s being unappreciative of my interests and hobbies. AITAH?

2024.05.16 16:46 Fit_Wheel1084 Had an amazing session

I want to keep this community going because I feel like this work is the sh**
So I figured Iā€™d share some personal experiences here and there to open dialogue.
I had a very sever physical misalignment. Even though I have an athletic lifestyle, I was never able to get myself past a certain threshold because it would start causing pain and discomfort. I would buy and research anything I could use for posture correction but nothing could help long term.
I started noticing that I would feel better until I happen to see someone. Anyone. A friend, family member, strangers the posture would immediately return. I started to think there was something more emotional going on. The insecurity of being seen maybe?
Then Iā€™m at work one day (massage therapist). Side note: I have always felt the reward in helping alleviate chronic pain but itā€™s not always a possibility or a short process. But you take the wins where you can right! So this client came in. Sheā€™s in her 80s and has very sever scar tissue in her shoulder. Something weā€™ve been working on. I go to work on that area and I am stunned by the change, the difference I am feeling. I actually took my hands off of her in surprised. I had to ask. She was so pleased with my reaction and she was waiting to see if I could notice a difference.
Some time had passed and with almost every appointment following she shared and we saw her body changing. Remarkable. I read the books during this time as well. It was Just fascinating.
I finally got it done myself. I was sure this misalignment was emotional, I was sure I was disconnected with my body. I saw a practitioner and without even telling her much she got the EXACT vertebrae misalignment. Her age detection and emotional associations were spot on. It was related to Panic and love unreceived from years of child A(word). I was relieved by the end and honestly felt tired. I get up to get ready for my work shift and when I looked in the mirror, the misaligned was no where to be seen. NOTHING, NADA. Itā€™s never returned. I was recommended to do a heart wall. But I will leave that for another day.

Years ago, in the early days of online chat, I found myself caught up in a web of deception. This happened many moons ago, every day at 8 a.m. Manila time, which was 8 p.m. Eastern Time, I would wait until Russell went online. He was from New York and a fireman.
And he always did, right on the dot.
There were no apps then, all we had was Yahoo Messenger.
Iā€™m not proud of what I did ā€” it just happened. It was supposed to be a one-time chat, but instead, it went on for months, until I had to come clean and tell him the truth: that I wasnā€™t the woman in the photo I sent him.
I didnā€™t even know there was a word for it back then ā€” catfishing.
Of course, when the truth was out, and when I never heard from him again, even if there was never money involved, which means I didnā€™t defraud him in exchange for sex work ā€” I remember not only feeling hurt for a long time.
I felt awful for what I did ā€” I lied and pretended to be someone else.

OnlyFans Chatter

The Truth About OnlyFans
These days catfishing has taken a new direction, and it is pervasive in the world of online sex work, with the popularity of OnlyFans it gave birth to an army of impersonators known as ā€œchatters.ā€
It isn't easy to make money online, especially from writing. Anyone who promises you can make X amount if you buy their writing course is selling you not only lies but snake oil, and thereā€™s a word for it ā€” scam.
But Iā€™m not here to preach, Iā€™m here to understand.
I was surprised that my story on sugar dating, and sex work started to have readers. Are people interested in what goes on behind sugar dating apps, with sugar daddies, or mommies? Or is it because sex work, while it remains taboo, is a topic we all like to explore behind the dark walls of our privacy?
Online sex work had exploded.
We hear a lot of success stories, horrid tales, and even crimes that happen in the industry.
A booming industry in countries like the Philippines is an online work that nobody really talks about. If you happen to find yourself enticed to become an OnlyFans chatter, think again. Not only have you entered the rabbit hole of sex work, but you have essentially become a fraudster and in the Philippines, both are considered crimes.
OnlyFans models, many of whom started creating content to survive during the pandemic, soon discovered that there is so much money out there, and as always money brings out the worst in all of us.
To make more money as an OnlyFans model, you need more subscribers or to convince your existing fans to buy more content. While an OnlyFans subscription is only the beginning, the sky is the limit as to how much an OnlyFans model can make ā€” and there lies the gray area of OnlyFans.
To scale their businesses, these models started hiring OnlyFans chatters, people willing to work for pittance in the hope they could make sales that would mean higher commissions from the models.
And what do they sell?
The OnlyFans modelā€™s exclusive content, which can be as basic as a sex video or a special fetish request from a paying subscriber. As an OnlyFans chatter, you pretend to be the model, you become her even if you are a male chatter.
On the other side of the chat, the victim doesn't know he isn't talking to the OnlyFans model but worse to someone who is thousands of miles away, hired as a chatter from a poor country like the Philippines.
Worse still, the poor male fan doesn't know he could even be talking to another man pretending to be a woman.

Worse still, the poor male fan doesn't know he could even be talking to another man pretending to be a woman.

The insidious economy of scale

Ideogram
Who would have thought the capitalist concept of the economy of scale would find its way into the adult content industry?
Sex work has come a long way. It used to be a one-on-one transaction, today we have platforms like OnlyFans that allow an adult content creator to become a business in itself, never before seen in the history of sex work.
First, let us define the meaning of economy of scale.
Economy of scale, in economics, the relationship between the size of a plant or industry and the lowest possible cost of a product. When a factory increases output, a reduction in the average cost of a product is usually obtained. This reduction is known as economy of scale. ā€” Source
If you become a popular OnlyFans model, you will be surprised to learn that you can run your business 24/7 by employing agencies that in turn hire low-paid contractors in poor countries like the Philippines.
The chat specialists they give you, that was a huge deal for me,ā€ she said. The agency provided a team of contractors whose sole job is to masquerade as the creator while swapping DMs with her subscribers. These textual conversations are meant to be the main way that OnlyFans users can interact with the models they adore. ā€” Source
The OnlyFans ecosystem had evolved from being a mom-and-pop porn business into a billion-dollar platform where 190 million people are checking out their favorite OnlyFans model daily.
It is impossible even for anyone who found relative success in the platform to be able to talk to their fans because if they don't, that is a lost opportunity to further sell their products which usually are recycled adult content videos from their content library.
In a Reddit post of an OnlyFans chatter, the conversation had both its supporters and critics. While some would see their work as harmless, and that they are in sales, some recognize that they have become sex workers and while some become experts at being detached and call it part of their job, some have to learn how to desensitize themselves and focus on how they can make more money rather than check their moral values.
Not only do they have to take the persona of the OnlyFans model, but they also have to be engaging, knowing how to do sex talk which later on will need to progress to mastering the art of upselling, and by this means selling more sex videos from the creator.
As much as some would say it is just another way to make money online, and although they don't do any sexual acts themselves, they have become a sex worker, fraudsters, or both.
In its simplest definition, Sex workers are adults who receive money or goods in exchange for consensual sexual services or erotic performances, either regularly or occasionally.
By that definition, the OnlyFans chatter who engage in sex talk and make money from explicit content have undeniably become sex workers themselves.
And once you find yourself in the industry, it changes who you are, your morals and psyche ā€” it just does. Even when I didnā€™t ask Russell for money, the lies I told him bothered me. I engaged in sex talk, pretended to be a female, and took advantage of Russell's vulnerability.
The whole experience changed who I was.

Final words

In the Philippines, you would even find tutorials on YouTube on how to be accepted as an OnlyFans chatter. There are also exclusive Facebook groups and anonymous Reddit groups where Filipinos would discuss their newfound online work.
A recent article from Wired showed a glimpse into the world of being an OnlyFans chatter, the whole OnlyFans ecosystem, why it had become a multi-billion dollar industry, and how it opened new businesses like chat management firms that hire these contractors.
What is fascinating about the article is that soon, there will be a class action suit against the people behind these chat management companies.
As one lawyer Carey argues, that the managers who run creatorsā€™ accounts are engaging in a type of bait and switch that fits the classic definition of fraud. ā€œWhen you subscribe, the very first thing it says is, ā€˜Have a DM relationship,ā€™ā€ he said. ā€œWell, thatā€™s totally fraudulent ā€¦ Itā€™s an open secret theyā€™re just defrauding people.ā€ ā€” Source
I don't judge anyone who finds themselves working as an OnlyFans chatter ā€” the pay is good, and the likelihood of earning beyond what regular jobs can offer often blurs anyoneā€™s moral judgment especially when you find yourself living in poverty like many of these young people in the Philippines.
OnlyFans has become a multibillion-dollar business, and it claims to be a technology company. Yet it all has the elements of sex work ā€” the sex, the money, and potentially the crime.
They say prostitution is the oldest profession, and in todayā€™s world OnlyFans is sex work 2.0.
I invite you to leave a comment and letā€™s have a conversation about sex work and fraud in the new era of technology.

The insidious economy of scale

Was talking to a buddy about the future and if I saw myself at my current job for the foreseeable future and it got me to thinking. I told him, yea I could see myself getting to a point where I have enough saved and could find myself quitting and doing something that maybe pays less but I find more passion with. Don't HATE my current job, but it's been getting stressful lately. No kids, so that kind of makes things less complicated. Stumbled across this subreddit and it seems like almost exactly what I'd be looking for.
Thinking I can sell my condo in the next few years and use the equity to potentially buy a cheaper place in cash. Kind of in a HCOL area (NJ) near the shore, so maybe would find a place in the same state, just inland, or potentially even out of state. Find a part time gig or less demanding full time job that I would find more enjoyable that would cover my taxes and other living expenses. I live pretty frugally so I could live off a pretty modest salary.
Am I on the right path? Anything that I'm missing or that I should consider?

I'm Back Bitches! Again!
//////////
Junior Systems Engineer First Class Cheā€™keero knelt before a semi-sparking control panel and sighed. She, and a large band of her fellow Engineers with Marine support, had boarded the pirate frigate with the singular goal of ensuring that the pirates didnā€™t scuttle their floating hulk and doom the slaves aboard to a, if they were lucky, a swift death in space.
The problem, of course, came with the pirateā€™s maintenance schedules and decisions to forgo certainā€¦ safety measures when it came to repair.
Like the panel before her. Usually a perfectly functional control system for the reverse-magnetic bulkhead doors that ensured void seals in power outages, some pirate at some point in their dumb, dumb life decided to fix the panel blowing a fuseā€¦ by ripping the fuse out and replacing it with a high density power cable. Which meant the entire thing was one massive shock hazard and actively sparking as the reactors deep in the ship flickered and surged due to damage.
Cheā€™keero swore as an arc of electricity flashed towards her face after a tool that was not supposed to be magnetized, cheap dick WaDepth requisitions, caught a magnetic field, fusing the entire system shut and turning the formerly barely functional control system into nothing but pretty, decorative wiring and cheap solder. She punched the now utterly unfunctional control box and toggled on her radio. ā€œThree-Two to Three-Lead, this doorā€™s fried. Youā€™ll need to bring in the cutters if we want to get to the rest of the ship. Might as well also bring in an inflatable airlock, Iā€™m not liking how some of the metal strain sensors are flashing at me.ā€
A semi-synthetic voice replied back to Cheā€™keero, ā€œThree-Lead copies. Iā€™ll be over there shortly with the stuff. Double check those sensors, Iā€™m not getting the same readings, so letā€™s make sure something isnā€™t blocking errors from reaching me.ā€
ā€œCopy that Three-Lead, Three-Two ou-ā€ Something tapped against the back of her helmet and Junior Systems Engineer First Class Cheā€™keero mentally swore.
ā€œNow, now, lassie, how about you sit right there and donā€™t move.ā€ A nasally, unfamiliar voice called out to her while tapping what a camera she set up to watch her back revealed to be a laser pistol to Cheā€™keeroā€™s helmet. ā€œI think that youā€™re going to be our new best friend and way off this dead end ship.ā€
Cheā€™keero paused, letting the situation settle in her mind, ā€œWait, what? Areā€¦ are you taking me hostage?ā€
ā€œYes!ā€ The pirate replied.
ā€œWhy?ā€
ā€œWhy what?ā€
ā€œWhy are you taking me hostage? This wonā€™t work, none of the shuttles are jump capable and if you try anything, youā€™ll just end up jumped by marines. They specifically train to deal with pirates taking their engineers hostage. If you want to survive, you should just surrender and take the penal colony when itā€™s offered.ā€ Cheā€™keero mentioned, shrugging and continuing her inspection of the door.
The pirate seemed baffled at the sheer nonchalance of this response, the pistol slowly falling to merely point at her upper back instead of her head, ā€œYouā€¦ you really arenā€™t taking this seriously. Iā€™m a pirate! Iā€™ve killed people! Iā€™ve killed boys, and youā€™re just sitting there like this doesnā€™t mean anything!ā€
ā€œI meanā€¦ I wouldnā€™t say that.ā€ Cheā€™keero replied.
ā€œTHEN WHAT DO YOU MEAN!ā€ The pirate screamed, the pistol moving away from Cheā€™keeroā€™s body by a fraction of an inch during an angry gesture.
It was at that point, a ceramic alloyed, carbon steel blade punched clean through the back of the pirateā€™s suit, slicing through their central nervous system and striking with enough force to shatter the faceplate of said pirateā€™s helmet on the way out. Muscles twitching, the laser pistol fired off randomly, missing Cheā€™keero and slagging a chunk of bulkhead.
ā€œIā€™m just buying time,ā€ Cheā€™keero replied cheekily.
ā€œYou really need to remember to check your cameras,ā€ The semi-synthetic voice of Ventures Forth Bravely Into Great Unknowns commented as the ex-pirate fell to the ground and blue blood dripped from the long blade sprouting from her right arm and a toolbox hanging from her left hand. ā€œThis isnā€™t the first time you have been flanked, and this one wasnā€™t during training.ā€
ā€œLook, Iā€™m sorry. It wonā€™t happen again.ā€ Cheā€™keero replied a bit testily.
ā€œIā€™m sorryā€¦ā€ Ventures Forth prodded.
ā€œIā€™m sorry, Maā€™am.ā€
ā€œMuch better. Right, now what do we see in this- yeah you were right on it being fried.ā€ Ventures Forth gently shoved the Junior Systems Engineer aside and took her place at the control panel. ā€œDo a sweep of the strain systems. I donā€™t want this section of the ship breaking apart. Feel free to call up our hull patches. Weā€™ve got plenty to share and this might have to be a lifeboat.ā€
ā€œAye, maā€™am aye,ā€ Cheā€™keero replied with a crisp salute before rushing off to her duty.
Deeper inside the ship, Ventures Forth could hear laser fire, clashing of metal on metal, and cries for help.
The pirate ship was doomed, it was shattered and broken, but it was not destroyed. Not yet. \
And if she had her way, Ventures Forth Bravely Into Great Unknowns would keep it that way.
//////////
Roshal stood still as her steward continued to clean the dark blue and rapidly congealing blood off her armored form. ā€œComms,ā€ She called out, ā€œDo we have any contact with the shuttle we sent to the station?ā€
ā€œNegative, maā€™am.ā€ The comm officer replied. She wasnā€™t the same one that was present when Roshal left to fend off the boarders. At the unspoken question, the woman continued ā€œCommunicationā€™s Mate Second Class Levā€™tal, maā€™am. My superior got a concussion when the pirate ship rocked our ship during boarding. Strap snapped, prior damage. I took over.ā€
Roshal nodded approvingly, ā€œGood initiative. Send a message to the station, see if we canā€™t rai-ā€
ā€œMaā€™am! Contact!ā€ One of her sensor techs called out, ā€œBelay that, two contacts. First contact, nav point 782 spinward, possible bogey, cruiser weight. Unknown movements. Second contact, nav point 102 coreward, aerospace assets inbound. Small flight. Hard to determine numbers due to damage. No less than two, no more than five.ā€
ā€œFocus on getting a hard contact on that possible cruiser. Weapons, what is the status of our anti-aerospace.ā€ Roshal demanded, holding her sword arm out for the steward to scrub at a particularly clotted chunk of blood splattered over her wrist.
The weapons officer shook her head, ā€œIf weā€™re lucky, then weā€™ve got 20% coverage on half our sides. If weā€™re very lucky, I might be able to bump that number up to 35%. Not going to quote doctrine, but thatā€™s not nearly enough to fend off a flight of Aerospace assets on a strike run, and thatā€™s assuming they donā€™t hit us on an unprotected flank.ā€
Roshal nodded once more, ā€œSound general quarters and get weapons and tactical back online. Tell the damage control parties to not be distracted and focus on critical systems first. Engine room, report. Can you give me maneuvering thrust?ā€
The nearby ship phone chimed in with a staticy hiss, ā€œNegative, maā€™am. The shot we made with the spinal mount tripped breakers up and down the reactor room. This isnā€™t an engine problem, we need to make sure our reactor doesnā€™t blow up when we siphon power. Before you ask, emergency power is still flowing and none of their circuits tripped, but that means weā€™re down to life support, basic systems, and dockyard thrusters. It will take at least 20 to get the reactor in a safe state. If you want 10, send the chaplain down so we have someone praying for good luck. The fact most of our structural engineers are doing an EVA boarding to ensure the pirate ship next to us doesnā€™t go critical and render the entire exercise moot isnā€™t helping matters at all.ā€ The engine room replied Roshal bit down a bit of annoyance at the snark, but engineers were always a finicky sort with authority. They were the first to remind uptight officers that while the Captainā€™s word may be iron law, it was their work that truly moved the ship.
ā€œConfirmed, engine room.ā€ Roshal instead replied. ā€œChaplains will be arriving shortly. Do what you can and inform me when youā€™re three minutes out from full power.ā€
The engine room didnā€™t even bother replying, just sending over the affirmative light as they got to work. Roshal approved of that. Sometimes, you just had to insult someone in order to get it working right.
ā€œCaptain, we have confirmation on contact. Heā€™s an Alliance Karcharidon class Heavy Cruiser on intercept course. Energy readings are spikingā€¦ theyā€™re charging their guns, maā€™am!ā€
ā€œIssue a hostile challenge and give me a firing solution with any gun still functional.ā€
ā€œNo response, maā€™am. Hostile Karcharidon is increasing speed. Hard contact in 15 minutes.ā€
Roshal snarled, emotion breaking through her mask. ā€œOf course, the pirates had one more vessel. Helm, fire our maneuvering thrusters, use the pirate hulk as cover. Weapons, get whoeverā€™s left of our Interceptor flight to engage the enemy. Comms, get me in contact with the merchant fleet, tell them to evacuate. Weā€™ll provide cover.ā€
ā€œAye maā€™am.ā€ The Communications Mate Second Class said with a shiver in her voice. ā€œSending-ā€
ā€œUpdate on Aerospace assets!ā€ Her sensor tech called out.
ā€œDeliver!ā€ Roshal demanded, cutting off the comms officer with a slice of her hand.
ā€œWeapons fire. Definitely less than four contacts. Seems to be two grou- negative, only two contacts remaining- weaponsfire- one contac- IFF received, oh goddesses, ITā€™S RUNOFF THREE! FRIENDLY AEROSPACE INBOUND!ā€
//////////
Milk gripped her crash harness hard as Cookie slammed the Interceptorā€™s fusion torch clean past its safe thrust marker and into the red as g forces crushed her chest. ā€œLast target down.ā€ She reported after Cookieā€™s final laser burst hit something critical inside the final Aerospace fighterā€™s frame. ā€œThatā€™s 20 for 20. All enemy bogeys down. All standard munitions are in the black. Static drive is 48%, dump core ejected. All weā€™ve got left is our ASM and front laser.ā€
Cookie flashed back an affirmative signal.
ā€œWe going for that cruiser?ā€
Another affirmative.
ā€œWell, Iā€™m braced and ready on the release. Ready.ā€
ā€œReady.ā€ Cookie spoke, his voice horse.
Itā€™s funny what people think when their lives are on the line. Because charging towards a fresh enemy Heavy Cruiser, nothing but a single anti-shipping missile worth a damn, no allied support but the faint glimmer in IFF screens of their fellow flight doing the sameā€¦ all Aoibhinn McDermott could think of was a poem she had read at least a decade ago or more at the Naval Academy.
Half a league, half a league,
Half a league onward,
All in the Valley of Death
Rode the six hundred.
//////////
Ventures Forth Bravely Into Great Unknowns could do nothing but furiously swear as the basic sensor system her engineering team had restored on the thoroughly ventilated secondary command bridge of the pirate hulk revealed an enemy Heavy Cruiser bearing down upon their homeship.
ā€œWeapons are trashed. We cored their reactor, anyway.ā€ One of the tangential engineers reported, ā€œOther teams are calling in. Things are worse where they are. Weā€™ve found the slaves, though, luckily it was one of the few airtight bays. Also, have some more captives, but that really doesnā€™t matter right now.ā€
ā€œNo shit.ā€ Ventures Forth replied, ā€œCan we do anything?ā€
The engineer looked back to her, visor depolarizing so the Gearschilde can look into the black and yellow eyes of her Shil coworker.
ā€œPray.ā€ The woman replied simply.
Ventures Forth Bravely Into Great Unknowns did just that.
//////////
Low chanting filled the engine bay as a small group of priests stood around the engine praying to whichever god that would listen to allow them one more shot. One more fight.
Around them, black handed engineers scurried, ripping out blown fuses and replacing them with soldered in high strength wire. A final measure of desperation. Sparks flew as engineers swore and chaplains prayed, power still remaining in circuits needing to be bled out before bypasses could be installed, turning every bit of solder and every ripped out fuse into a deadly gamble.
Already, someone was lying on the ground, no longer twitching.
They didnā€™t have time to check on their fallen comrade, the work was too important.
A clock ticked down. Four minutes elapsed.
//////////
Lieutenant Commander Cenywyn swore as she watched Runoff 2 die.
Their single Interceptor had mistimed a maneuver and had been caught dead in the middle of an Anti-Aerospace array, shredded in an instant. The only consolation she could take was that, seeing as the first shot went clean through the cockpit, they didnā€™t even notice they died.
ā€œRunoff 4, stay in formation.ā€ She ordered over the radio, ā€œWeā€™ll lead you in for the run.ā€
ā€œYes maā€™am.ā€ The hesitant voice of Junior Flight Lieutenant Griogill replied. She swallowed, ā€œWeā€™re- weā€™re ready when you are.ā€
ā€œNo fear, Lieutenant,ā€ Cenywyn called back to the child she was leading to her death. ā€œWeā€™re pilots in the Imperial Patrol. We do our duty. No fear.ā€
A clock ticked down. Six minutes elapsed.
//////////
ā€œTalk to me!ā€ The last remaining senior engineer in the reactor bay called out to anyone who was able to reply.
Someone, she didnā€™t even bother looking to see who, called back ā€œWeā€™ve bypassed 60% of the fuses. Should be able to give ourselves a burst of combat power. No more than 10 minutes of it before the entire system overheats and we either die, or the reactor shuts off.ā€
ā€œAny chance we can get more than 10 minutes?ā€
ā€œNot before that Heavy Cruiser delivers us straight to the stars.ā€
ā€œFuck it, good enough.ā€ She slammed her fist on the ship phoneā€™s dialing button resting near the console the engineer had just ripped the last safety override out of. ā€œCaptain. Weā€™ve got your power. You give us the word, and weā€™ll give you ten minutes.ā€
//////////
Roshal breathed in, breathed out, and nodded. 10 minutes of combat power before the entire ship shut down into uselessness. Sheā€™d done more with less. She couldnā€™t remember when, but she had. Luckily, this was a Patrol Carrier instead of a standard ship, so it was more than capable of combat maneuvers with nothing but RCS thrusters. That should give her some time.
Movement, movement was going to be the key.
ā€œComms, tell the engineering crews on the hulk that they are ordered to figure out anything that could draw the attention of the Heavy Cruiser,ā€ She began, ā€œSystems, break our mooring lines. Weā€™re going to have to split from the hulk. Helm, prepare for maneuvers. RCS only. We are going to have to do this carefully. Engineroom, prepare for power activation, but hold until my command.ā€
This needs to be perfect, Roshal thought, A single mistimed action ruins it all.
A clock ticked down. Ten minutes elapsed. The Karcharidon had entered maximum weaponā€™s range.
//////////
He of Slender Tail shivered where he stood. The secondary command bridge was silent as Roshal began giving orders to fight. This wasā€¦ this was insane.
They were in a ruined ship with nothing but a merchant fleet beginning to flee and a three thirds dead pirate hulk on their side against a fresh Karcharidon class Heavy Cruiser.
They couldnā€™t win.
This was suicide.
They would die here.
\ So why didnā€™t He of Slender Tail feel afraid?
He stood at his post, a secondary bridge console where he would relay orders to other departments, freeing up the other Watchkeeper to collate those orders, there was nothing he could do to help win this impossible battle, and yetā€¦
And yet he felt heat blossoming inside his chest with every single order delivered.
ā€œMooring teamsss, you are to cut your linesss immediately.ā€ He relayed to a crew of Shil scurrying around the ruined bulkheads, ā€œDamage control, prepare for electrical firesss and arcsss.ā€ He commanded, switching between teams instantly.
He didnā€™t feel fear. He could see his Watchkeeper shiver every time the sensors reported the enemy contact was still closing, but he didnā€™t feel the same.
What he feltā€¦ was indignation.
How dare this pirate scum threaten his vessel, his crew. How dare they ambush this valiant ship after they had fought so hard to win. How dare they.
He let his fangs fold out as he spat the next order, ā€œAnti-Aerossspace teamsss, prepare your batteriesss for grouped fire. Gunnery calculationsss are on their way.ā€
How dare they stand up to him.
A clock ticked down. 12 minutes elapsed. Weapons fire.
//////////
Roshal swayed slightly as she could feel the ship beneath her feet move. Movement is life in naval warfare, movement is death. ā€œRight RCS fire, bring us clear of the hulk. Bow thrusters, up twenty.ā€
ā€œAye, maā€™am, aye, right standard and bow up twenty.ā€ The Helmswoman replied.
ā€œConfirmed. Next maneuver, give us rear thrust-ā€
ā€œTorpedo!ā€ The sensor operator called out in a shrill voice, ā€œTwo marks on intercept course! Range, twelve K and closing fast!ā€
ā€œDecorum!ā€ Roshal snapped at the panicking sensor technician. ā€œComms, order Runoff flight to divert and intercept those torpedoes. Rear RCS to full, give us momentum.ā€
Roshal turned away from the bridge as affirmations were shouted, and the ship began to move, ā€œEngineering, prepare to activate combat power on my mark and prepare for hard maneuvers. Mark in five.ā€
//////////
Griogill swallowed bile and tried not to feel too thankful that the enemy vessel had fired torpedoes at their home ship. Being diverted from an attack run had a much higher chance of survival than striking through an AA bubble.
ā€œRunoff 4 engaging far torpedo. Moving in for intercept. Breā€™kas, give me lock.ā€
Griogillā€™s backseater muttered something, and a target lock appeared on the far torpedo as Runoff 1, their previous Drill Sergeants, dashed by in a hard burn and blazed away at their own target.
ā€œRight. We can do this. We can do this. No fear.ā€ The rookie muttered as the sight of her friends in Runoff 3 being turned to vapor echoed in her mind. ā€œI can do this.ā€
The target locked. She fired. The torpedo detonated.
A clock ticked down.
//////////
ā€œMark in four.ā€
//////////
The Heavy Cruiser loomed closer as the comparatively tiny Patrol Carrier spat its defiance in the form of two Interceptors dancing between the stars.
As a pair of torpedoes detonated, four more were launched, the anti-shipping weapons built for this specific purpose. Destroying disabled vessels.
And so the last two remaining Interceptors on CAP dove into the fray, risking themselves against an ever approaching AA bubble in order to save their ship.
A clock ticked down.
//////////
ā€œMark in three.ā€
//////////
All Cookie could do was stare and push his meager aerospace fighter further on its nuclear thrusters as shimmering dots of torpedoes lanced out from the Heavy Cruiser attacking his new home.
He pushed his hand forward and felt the throttle once more push back against him, the lever pushed all the way past safe thrust and into the further setting on his console.
The Interceptor was fast. It didnā€™t feel fast enough.
And so he spoke the words he spoke once before, back when heā€™d had to listen to his backseaterā€™s screams of pain and the rush of wind after shrapnel pierced his fuselage, and the hospital was so, so far away.
Father, I pray that you will not hide your face from me. Whenever I pray, Lord please hear me and answer me speedily in Jesus' name. God, I pray that you will grant me speed through your help.
A clock ticked down.
//////////
ā€œMark in two.ā€
//////////
The Heavy Cruiser shifted, engine flaring and it began to close the range. A single disabled ship on emergency RCS thrusters and a pair of Aerospace fighters was nothing it would have to deal with.
It fired a third spread of torpedoes.
A clock ticked down.
//////////
They took the bait. Roshal thought with a vicious grin.
ā€œMark in one.ā€ She paused, ā€œExecute.ā€
In an instant, power flowed through the ship, emergency lights flickered off as the burning red boarding lights returned their fiery glow. The entire ship shook as the main thruster came back online, and capacitors began to charge for maneuvers.
ā€œHard burn, full thrusters, right, on my mark.ā€ Roshal watched as the Heavy Cruiser began to react to her movements, the enemy ship was alive, you needed to roll to broadsides to begin bombardment, come on come onā€¦
Roshal watched as a torpedo flickered out of existence, Runoff 4 gaining another kill.
Come on, dammit, you donā€™t get put in charge of a Heavy Cruiser without- THERE!
The Heavy Cruiser flinched, turning her bow away from the no longer stricken vessel, preparing for broadside.
The Captainā€™s grin showed more teeth than smile. ā€œExecute! Full right thrust!ā€
ā€œFull right thrust! Aye maā€™am aye!ā€ Her helmswoman called out as maneuvering thrusters dead cold roared to life and physically threw the vessel to the side, causing everyone not strapped in on the bridge to rock as a barrage of fire flew past their former location, manual targeting systems in play since the automatic systems would still be getting warmed up.
ā€œFull thrust forward, prepare to divert all power to secondary weapons. Weapons, give me a firing solution.ā€ Roshal commanded, hand raised and pointed at the enemyā€™s display as if she were commanding from a tall ship.
A chant of ā€œAye maā€™am ayeā€ flowed out across the bridge as the weaponsmistress was silent before calling out. ā€œPort side is up to 45% secondary fires and 32% point defense. Thatā€™ll be our best bet.ā€
Roshal nodded. ā€œMake it so. Target their main weapons. Helm, get us that facing.ā€
ā€œMaā€™am. Weā€™re getting a call from Runoff 3. They are entering the AO and are asking for a target.ā€
Roshal smiled, ā€œWeapons, shift target. Aim for the anti-aerospace systems. Letā€™s give Runoff 3 the opening they need.ā€
A clock ticked down.
//////////
ā€œCookie, weā€™ve got a targeting path.ā€ Milk called forward. ā€œPutting it up on your HUD.ā€
ā€œOne secondā€¦ Iā€™ve got it. Moving to comply. Did the Captain give us a plan?ā€ her front seater replied, causing her stomach to do funny things as the Aerospace Fighter maneuvered while under high thrust.
ā€œSomething like that. She asked for a munitions report and specifically about our anti-shipping weapon.ā€
Cookie paused.
ā€œAh.ā€ He finally said.
ā€œYeah.ā€ She replied.
ā€œWell, letā€™s hope theyā€™re able to open us up to a window of opportunity. Or this will be a short charge.ā€
ā€œNot our place to question why.ā€
ā€œJust our place to do and die.ā€
Time to targetā€¦ three minutes.
Into the valley of Death, rode the six hundred.
A clock ticked down.
//////////
Two vessels, three Aerospace fighters, one chance.
Six minutes of power remained. All actors took their places on the stage.
One hundred kilometers, close enough to check the weld quality of hull seams, the two ships danced across from each other. Maneuvering.
Five minutes of power remained.
The Karcharidon Heavy Cruiser rolled itself trying to keep the vulnerable top deck away from the Patrol Carrierā€™s presumably still working main gun as Roshalā€™s vessel jumped to the side. Thrusters roared.
Four minutes of power remained.
Runoff 1 and 4 shot towards their formerly separated comrade, forming up behind them in a wedge. The trio climbed towards the sun as their captain continued to chase and harass the Karcharidon.
Three minutes of power remained.
Roshal spoke. The lances of her vessel fired. Laser blasts carved across the hull of the enemy ship as it rolled.
The rolling ceased. A helmswoman swore as a full broadside caught the Patrol Carrier in the flank. The port hangar pod was ruined, armor shattered and all inside exposed to hard vacuum. Those who could scream died the fastest. The Interceptors had their opening.
Two minutes of power remained.
Silent wings swept through vacuum as three Interceptors began their dive, their formerly speedy arrowhead shape giving way to an inverted t as their wings swept out for stability, the ASF dove and dove and dove.
Five Kilometers away.
The range was too wide. They had one shot. It had to be perfect.
One minute of power remained.
The Into Harmā€™s Way spat its defiance into the world, limited power drained to give her pilots a seconds more of time.
30 seconds of power remained.
Three Kilometers.
Hard Lock! Milk shouted from the back seat of Runoff 3. Cookie was silent. The range was still too wide.
15 seconds of power remained.
Two Kilometers.
The Karcharidon seemingly began to roll before the Patrol Carrier once more fired, its last remaining weapons spouting their defiance against the world. Deep in engineering, systems began to blow, wires that replaced fuses sparked power and delicate circuit boards shorted out into useless scrap.
The lights went out.
No power remained.
Roshal, in her head, began to count down as lances of light began to sweep across her ship. Damage control did what they could, but the beams began to cut like an overly enthusiastic shipbreaker.
Five.
One Kilometer.
Four.
Cookieā€™s thumb depressed the firing stud as the Interceptor screamed at him.
Three.
The ASF launched its deadly payload.
Two.
Three Interceptors pulled back hard on their sticks to avoid colliding with the deck.
One.
The thruster of the anti-shipping missile roared as it rocketed the point blank aerospace distance to target.
Impact.
The armor piercing tip of the missile punched into the upper deck plating of the Heavy Cruiser, classified alloys allowing it to pierce into the armored plating just enough to allow the shaped charge to open up a hole as momentum kept the weapon moving.
Within the frame of a single second, the warhead of the missile had entered the ship and, before the alarms even had time to sound, detonated.
A new sun appeared in the void for a split second as a plasma-fusion warhead detonated inside the Karcharidon heavy cruiserā€™s hull.
//////////
Roshal allowed herself to breathe a sigh of relief inside her head as the emergency power lights flickered overhead and the gravity ever so slightly lightened. What was left of their sensor arrays showed the enemy vessel powering down. ā€œEngineering. Good work, your 10 minutes were just what she needed.ā€ She called out, picking up the ship phone.
There was no answer from engineering.
She signed externally before pointing at one of the marines guarding the bridge, ā€œFind a crewmate in a void suit. I have need of runners.ā€ The marine clasped a fist to her chest before leaving to execute her captainā€™s commands. ā€œComms, do we have any contact with the engineering teams on the pirate hulk?ā€
The Comms officer held up a hand, Roshal waited, ā€œNo, maā€™am. We arenā€™t getting- wait. Weā€™ve got visual on flashing lights from the hull. Apparently, something shorted, so theyā€™re having to rebuild broadcast arrays. They can receive just fine, though.ā€
ā€œGood, once we can maneuver, bring us broadside of them. Whatā€™s the status of the merchant fleet?ā€
Navigation spoke up now, ā€œStill heading for the Jump Point. Should we send the recall order?ā€
ā€œNot yet, we are still unsure if the area is safe. If we have any sensors remaining, begin sca-ā€
The mentioned sensor technician interrupted Captain Roshal, ā€œMaā€™am, new contact, signature unknown. Just jumped in from outside the starlane!ā€
ā€œGive me details. Course, range, and speed?ā€ She demanded.
ā€œSignal confused, canā€™t get a lock!ā€ Navigation called out, ā€œCanā€™t tell if confusionā€™s from them or us.ā€
Not another oneā€¦ Roshal sighed, ā€œAll forces prepa-ā€
ā€œMaā€™am, weā€™re being hailed.ā€ Communications called out.
ā€œOn squawk.ā€
ā€œThis is Captain Alā€™yosha Calā€™rada of Her Imperial Majestyā€™s Ship Spear of the Knyaginya, responding to Merchant vessel distress calls. Imperial Patrol Carrier, are you in need of assistance at this time?ā€
Roshal recognized the voice. A junior officer from her days in the Navy and a fellow Sevastutavan. The memory of the fresh faced girl when sheā€™d joined her as an Ensign straight of the Naval Academy flashed before her eyes. ā€œCaptain Calā€™rada. Your timing is impeccable as always.ā€
ā€œAdmiral?ā€ Roshal could hear the shock in her old protegeā€™s voice.
ā€œThatā€™s Captain, now, Alā€™yosha. I require your aid in ensuring the disabled vessel still glowing from an ASM strike remains disabled along with Search and Rescue teams for our sister Carrier.
ā€œWhatever you want, youā€™ll have it, Admiral_ā€¦ Helm! All ahead flank and plot course to intercept. Launch gunships and prepare to deploy Bluejackets. Weā€™ll test our _Orcasā€™ teeth today!ā€
The line cut out a moment later than it should have, and Roshal nodded in approval.
ā€œCaptain, I still donā€™t have a read on new contact. What is it?ā€ Sensors asked.
ā€œA Drepā€™na inspired vision, come to life.ā€ Roshal watched, feeling an odd sort of parental pride as Alā€™yoshaā€™s experimental warship began closing the distance towards the Karcharidon at breakneck speeds. ā€œA swift sailing vessel and ten carriage gunsā€¦ā€ Roshal murmured the line from an old Vaasconian poem from the ancient Age of Sail. She had heard Calā€™rada had succeeded in petitioning the Navy to build her dream-ship, burning every favor and passing out favors to any and everyone to see the program through. Now, there she was, standing on the bridge bearing down on a ship twice her size, but if the rumors were true, only half her guns.
ā€œMaā€™am, contact is still not resolving, but IFF confirms Imperial Navy designation. An Akula Class Attack Transport. Iā€™veā€¦ Iā€™ve never even heard of this class.ā€
ā€œPerhaps we shall hear of them more in the future. Fortune favors the active.ā€
ā€œContact is disgorging multiple signals, moving at speeds consistent with aerospace assets.ā€
ā€œThat is our signal we may disengage. Comms, inform the merchant fleet that the area is secure and to begin refueling procedures. Helm, get us alongside the pirate hulk, we have people to recover. Marine, get me a runner to the MPā€™s, we shall need the port hangar prepared for an old tradition the Navy has regarding pirate prisonersā€¦ā€ Roshal commanded. The fight was over, it was time to begin the cleanup.
//////////
Soā€¦ that took a while. Sorry about that.
Turns out when a combination of writerā€™s block, decision paralysis and LIFE hits you over the head, it becomes a touch difficult to get your shit together long enough to write something down.
On the plus side, we are out of the ā€œunplanned bitsā€ and right back into the parts I have brainstormed, so I wonā€™t be staring at a screen trying to think how to make things connect as much anymore. On the other hand, that means we are now entering the epilogue of book 1 of Top Lasgun.
Donā€™t worry, the story isnā€™t ending, Iā€™ve got ā€œthreeā€ books plotted out in my head, so weā€™ll see how that shakes out, but for the most part, this is where I start wrapping up plot threads, laying down threads for what comes next, and all that other good stuff.
So yeah, next chapter is going to involve everyone wrapping up what happened here, some fun little Military Justice, and potentially a bunch of plot. Also, Iā€™m planning on starting a ā€œrewriteā€/edited version of this to go up on AO3, so keep an eye out for that. Early installment weirdness is a bitch and Iā€™m not proud of what the older stuff looked like.
Well, I hope you have a wonderful morning, afternoon or evening whenever you read this and I will see you next chapter.

Iā€™m looking for a lawnmower for a large yard - front and back - maybe a quarter of an acre? I was using a big old ride on that is on its last legs. I am hoping to not have to cut my lawn forever because I want to overseer it with clover but Iā€™m realistic and donā€™t know when that will happen. So I donā€™t want to buy a really expensive mower and then not use it much. I was thinking of getting an electric battery mower for about 500-600$ but I have read they donā€™t last long, the batteries die etc. I live in an area where everyone is obsessed with their lawns and Iā€™m not. I have been thinking of getting a gas recycler like 22 inches wide. I know thatā€™s not that big and it might take all day to mow it. But I donā€™t want to be half way through with no battery. I was looking at a Toro recycler for about $400-$500. Any recommendations? Thoughts on of electric is just substandard now? Thank you!

2024.05.16 16:37 MyClericalGnomance Beginners guide to unlocking the golden dice in honour mode.

Introduction

The main purpose of this guide will be to help unlock the golden dice for those of you who feel less confident about tackling honour mode. This is designed to be a path of least resistance, so we wonā€™t be experiencing everything this game has to offer. Itā€™s also worth noting that instead of focusing on min-maxing for damage; we prioritise safe & consistent damage. We donā€™t need to be respeccing characters often, if at all, and we wonā€™t be relying on strength elixirs. My girlfriend (u/-babyjanehudson) and I put this together as weā€™ve beaten honour mode a 5 times now without any failed attempts, we were even in the first 800 people to beat it which is kinda cool! Hereā€™s how we did it. First starting with our builds, then a little general advice and finally just a list of some general Doā€™s & Donā€™ts. Apologies for the wall of text.

Builds:

[Bardlock](https://www.reddit.com/BG3Builds/s/pMh6196Xp8) (party face) - Great old one Warlock 2, college of lore bard 10 - Cha16>Dex16>Con14>Wis12

Life cleric 12 - Wis16>Con16>Dex14>Str
(light cleric does more damage so is technically better for experienced players but a life cleric is there to save your run in case of an emergency, something pretty invaluable to beginners in HM as we canā€™t assume we are winning every fight in the first 2 turns like we ideally aim to)

Swords Bard Archer (Lockpicker) - 6 Swords Bard, 4 Rogue Thief, 2 Fighter - Dex17>Cha14>Con14>Wis12>Str
Skill priority for this character is Sleight of hand > Stealth > Perception > Persuasion > Intimidation > Deception > Acrobatics

Barbarian - Wild heart Bear Barb 8, Battle Master Fighter 4 - Str16>Con16>Dex14>Wis12

Final note for builds:
As youā€™ve probably noticed, yes almost everybody in the party takes a dip in fighter for access to action surge & shield proficiency. I learned this habit from Colby like everything else I know. Heā€™s the Bob Ross of DnD builds and well worth your time.

General Advice

The most important factor in honour mode is ā€œmeta knowledgeā€, This means things like: knowing how to enter each combat effectively, making sure everyone is in a good position before starting, knowing exactly which enemies/spells youā€™ll face during that fight and ensuring you always take the enemy by surprise to gain a free turn. Being properly prepared is better than any build. As for difficulty, Act 1 is always going to be your biggest challenge so use plenty of rests and pick your fights carefully. For this guide I also recommend using your bard to persuade the act 2 bosses into committing suicide.

To: [rule-comments@sec.gov](mailto:rule-comments@sec.gov)
Subject: Comments on SR-OCC-2024-001 34-100009
Dear Members of the Securities and Exchange Commission,
I am writing to express my concerns regarding Rule SR-OCC-2024-001, which proposes adjustments to margin thresholds, specifically during periods of high volatility.
This proposed adjustment is concerning because it essentially shifts the goalposts when clearing members are unable to meet their financial obligations. The necessity for margin calls in the first place is to prevent clearing members from overextending themselves on their bets, ensuring that they have adequate collateral to cover potential losses.
By adjusting margin thresholds during periods of high volatility, there is a risk that clearing members may not be required to maintain sufficient collateral, increasing the likelihood of default and destabilising the financial system.
This proposed adjustment raises critical questions about the integrity of the options market and the role of the Options Clearing Corporation (OCC) in managing risk.
The basis of this letter is equally to express support and appreciation to the SEC in their rejection of this rule, with supporting encouragement for this decision and future outcome.
With due consideration to the reasons for the rejection as presented:
  • Section 17A(b)(3)(F) of the Exchange Act, which requires, among other things, that the rules of a clearing agency are designed to promote the prompt and accurate clearance and settlement of securities transactions and derivative agreements, contracts, and transactions; and to assure the safeguarding of securities and funds which are in the custody or control of the clearing agency or for which it is responsible; [Refer to 15 U.S.C. 78q-1(b)(3)(F)]
  • Rule 17Ad-22(e)(2) of the Exchange Act, which requires that a covered clearing agency provide for governance arrangements that, among other things, specify clear and direct lines of responsibility; and [Refer to 17 CFR Ā§ 240.17Ad-22(e)(2)]
  • Rule 17Ad-22(e)(6) of the Exchange Act, which requires that a covered clearing agency establish, implement, maintain, and enforce written policies and procedures reasonably designed to cover, if the covered clearing agency provides central counterparty services, its credit exposures to its participants by establishing a risk-based margin system that, among other things, (1) considers, and produces margin levels commensurate with, the risks and particular attributes of each relevant product, portfolio, and market, and (2) calculates sufficient margin to cover its potential future exposure to participants in the interval between the last margin collection and the close out of positions following a participant default. [Refer to 17 CFR Ā§ 240.17Ad-22(e)(6)]
The OCC, as the central counterparty for options and futures contracts traded on U.S. exchanges, plays a crucial role in ensuring the integrity of the options market. Its primary responsibility is to guarantee the fulfillment of contracts and manage the risk associated with trading these financial instruments.
Margin calls serve a crucial purpose in the financial system by acting as a safeguard against excessive risk-taking. They ensure that clearing members have adequate collateral to cover potential losses, thereby preventing them from overextending themselves on their bets. However, by allowing for adjustments to margin thresholds during periods of high volatility, there is a risk of undermining this fundamental principle.
In the context of financial jargon, this proposal effectively allows clearing members to "kick the can down the road" when it comes to meeting their financial obligations. It's akin to "moving the goalposts" in a high-stakes game, where the rules are changed to accommodate those struggling to keep up.
Imagine a scenario where a hedge fund has taken substantial positions on a volatile stock. As the stock price experiences wild fluctuations, the hedge fund might find itself increasingly unable to meet its margin requirements. Under Rule SR-OCC-2024-001, the margin thresholds could be adjusted, effectively lowering the bar for maintaining adequate collateral. This not only incentivises risky behavior but also exacerbates systemic risk, as it increases the likelihood of default later down the line.
Furthermore, such adjustments lack transparency and introduce an element of arbitrariness into the margin calculation process. Without clear guidelines and objective criteria for determining margin thresholds, there is a risk of favoritism or manipulation, further eroding market integrity.
The use of "idiosyncratic volatility control settings" to adjust these margin thresholds during high volatility introduces a risk because it lacks transparency in the calculation and implementation process. Without clear guidelines on how these settings are determined, there is a potential for arbitrary or ad-hoc adjustments, allowing the Options Clearing Corporation (OCC) to alter the criteria whenever Clearing Members require assistance. This flexibility raises concerns about fairness, as it may create an environment where the rules can be changed based on individual circumstances, potentially favouring certain market participants or introducing an element of unpredictability.
The proposal's supporting evidence, particularly regarding said calculation of margin thresholds, is troublingly redacted. This lack of disclosure undermines the principles of transparency and accountability that are crucial in regulatory frameworks. As stakeholders, we require detailed information on how these adjustments will be made to ensure fair and equitable treatment of all market participants.
This lack of transparency undermines the integrity of financial markets by eroding trust among participants. Financial markets thrive on clear and consistent rules that are applied uniformly to ensure a level playing field. When rules can be adjusted opaquely, it creates uncertainty and diminishes confidence in the regulatory framework. Maintaining trust is essential for the effective functioning of financial markets, and transparency in rule-making and enforcement is a key factor in upholding the integrity of the overall financial system.
Moreover, the proposal grants unchecked authority to the Financial Risk Management (FRM) Officer to make unilateral decisions during periods of high market stress. This authority, while ostensibly intended to protect the interests of the OCC, raises questions about potential conflicts of interest. The FRM Officer is entrusted with safeguarding both the OCC's interests and those of at-risk Clearing Members, creating a potential conflict that needs addressing and changing.
In conclusion, Rule SR-OCC-2024-001 poses a significant threat to the stability and integrity of the financial system. It undermines the fundamental purpose of margin calls and introduces unnecessary risks that could have dire consequences for market participants.
In light of these concerns, I urge the Securities and Exchange Commission to carefully reconsider this proposal and prioritise the protection of investors and the stability of the financial markets by rejecting Proposed Rule SR-OCC-2024-001. Clear guidelines, transparency in calculations, and checks and balances on discretionary authority are essential for maintaining the integrity and stability of the financial markets.
Thank you for your attention to this matter. I trust that the SEC will carefully consider these concerns and take appropriate actions to address the potential risks associated with this rule.
Sincerely,
[APE]

TL;DRs šŸš€šŸ¦
  • Wall Street relies on the OCC for options and futures contracts.
  • Options require less upfront capital than buying shares, allowing Wall Street to control larger market positions with less initial investment.
  • Ideal for those who might be low on liquidity
  • Wall Street often leverages these positions using loans from banks, known as margin trading.
  • If a stockā€™s price moves against the investor's position (like GME skyrocketing), Wall Street's gotta put up more collateral against their option contracts.
  • This is called margin call.
  • Failure to meet margin calls can lead to hedge fund defaults and potentially bankruptcy.
  • Hedge fund defaults can also impact the banks that lent them money, increasing the risk of bank defaults.
  • AKA risking bank default too.
  • If clearing members can't cover losses, the OCC may need to use its funds to fulfill obligations to GME shareholders.
  • OCC donā€™t want to lose money
  • To prevent losses, the OCC wants to adjust margin thresholds for short sellers, reducing the risk of defaults by hedge funds and banks, and minimising threat to the OCC.

Vivid, brave and propulsive, Vuong's poems contend with personal loss, the meaning of family, and the value of joy in a perennially fractured American spirit. The author of the critically acclaimed poetry collection Night Sky with Exit Wounds, winner of the 2016 Whiting Award, the 2017 T. S. Eliot Prize and a 2019 MacArthur fellow, Vuong writes directly to our humanity without losing sight of the current moment. Motivated installations for Android and iOS: Bring your application to the TOP ratings - become a leader!
Incentivized app installs to promote apps in the App Store and Google Play and take advantage of unusual demand among successful developers, publishers and large companies. Do you want to find out whatā€™s so special about this efficient and effective way to get a large number of downloads and launches? Then read on
Motivated installs: identifying the main advantages
Why do you need to buy motivated installations at all, you ask? And then quickly get the mobile application into the TOP stores. This can be TOP of a category, TOP in collections, TOP by search queries (keywords). After all, you can bypass the alternative in them only if your brainchild ā€œbroke throughā€ in the first lines of the search result for a thematic section or using a key phrase. However, in this case, measures to ensure the flow of traffic will not be able to support your desires.
Buying installations is exactly the alternative that will speed up the process. It has the following advantages:
installation install. They are not done by bots, but by real people on personal devices from different regions of the country. If you buy traffic from a reliable source, then you can be sure that bots and emulators are prohibited and excluded, launching the application after installation and maintaining uniqueness are mandatory parameters. motivated installations of safe applications. After all, from a technical point of view, the App Store and Google Play systems have nothing to complain about. Such a campaign is absolutely identical to an expensive unmotivated advertising campaign in terms of traffic properties. Experience shows that almost all applications from the TOP stores buy this method of promotion; high-quality information flow. After all, games, instant messengers, and planners are downloaded by users of age groups who can turn into regular visitors to your application. The percentage of conversion of a motivated user to your target ranges from 5% to 37%. These metrics are influenced by your application, its success and availability. The highest percentage of conversions usually comes from games; You can buy mobile traffic at an affordable price. This is especially important when it comes to engaging thousands of users. every penny counts. You may be surprised by these figures - promotion with motivated traffic sometimes costs tens of times less than other advertising schemes; positive assessments of the atmosphere. Incentivized traffic goes beyond downloads and opens. Customers leave reviews on thematic applications, give good 5* ratings and comments. And other visitors often pay attention to them before installation. Do not forget that mentioning keywords in the comments entails intensive growth and the release of the application in the TOP for search queries; growth of ratings and positions. Remember that motivating mobile traffic is an effective way to bring your children to the TOP. They take into account the number of installations per day, a period that leads to an increase in motivated traffic. With a properly planned strategy, you will get a rapid increase in the application's position by category and by search queries in Google Play and the App Store.
Who is eligible for incentivized Android and iOS installations?
Firstly, motivated attitudes are suitable for owners of mass products. These could be different games or instant messengers, useful utilities, dating apps, taxi ordering and much more. That is, applications designed for a large number of users.
Secondly, those who want to get organic traffic from search and positive reviews can buy motivated installs. Success for 3-5 quick requests, time to bring convincing volumes in its pure form in the application. We have already mentioned that the motive for installing Android and iOS concerns real people using significant benefits for a life project.
Thirdly, you can download installations and highly targeted applications. It is often the most difficult for me to find my segment among users and advertise myself among them. Getting to the TOP will make good advertising. The owners of such applications often do this to ā€œmake themselves knownā€ and ask for their services.
Fourth, motivated app installs are important for developers; each product has an audience associated with a changing area or category. Also for developers who want to get targeted installations. This point is similar to physics, but differs in an even narrower specialization of the project.
Application rating: how important are real installations?
You can buy mobile traffic of a motivated or unmotivated nature. And as practice shows, the first method is much more effective and much cheaper. Yes, empty installations by bots can be produced in quantities of thousands in an hour, but what is the use of them? Store censors are well aware of such schemes and simply remove apps found to be fraudulent.
And you donā€™t just need mindless installs, but organic traffic, right? Getting into the TOP stores is half the success. True success lies in getting to the top and staying there. And this can only be done by maintaining the flow of traffic. If the project is successful, then it is able to sustain itself due to the abundant influx of organic matter. For some projects, motivated mobile traffic will help to confidently maintain a occupied position.
The @advertMobile.net, @appbooster.com, @keyapp.top, @holyunicorn.com services will cope with this task perfectly, because the key to our effectiveness is our own source of motivated installations. It allows you to bring products to the TOP in a matter of days. And the most important thing is to secure them there. In addition, the rating of applications will be influenced by real ratings, reviews and comments left by motivated users.
Do you think about how ā€œlegalā€ this method of promotion is in the App Store and Google Play? The answer is clear - legal. At its core, incentivized app installs are a market driver. It is beneficial for stores that programs are promoted, bring profit to them and the developers, and delight users.

2024.05.16 16:25 TWD41 Any Steebook Collectors Here?

I've been a steelbook collector ever since blu-rays became a main format for physical media. I was so bummed last year when Best Buy announced the end of their exclusive steelbooks and that they would stop carrying physical media completely in 2024.
That has turned my hobby into more of a treasure hunt now which is fun but frustrating. Walmart is now the main source of steelbooks. A lot of people online have shown where they have found dirt cheap steels at Walmart for as low as $5 usually in the dvd bins. I've been to every area Walmart and haven't found jack. I also can't find their new exclusive steelbook releases in store either like The Crow.
Has anyone had any luck with the Walmarts here and which location was it? Do you know of any secondary market stores that have steelbooks? I rather buy brand new than used though.

Ukraine Weekly Update #35: Russian Kharkiv offensive begins, and much more.
Disclaimer:
I am not an expert on this in that my education did not directly relate to studying Ukraine, but I have been following this conflict since 2014. While I try my best to only post valid information, take everything you read here with a grain of salt.
Why is US military aid to Ukraine Important?
  • Establishing the precedent that nations can take territory by force once more is dangerous for the whole world, particularly when it comes to China and Taiwan.
  • Russia specifically poses a credible threat to the NATO alliance, especially if NATO is perceived as weak and not unified. Part of the point of the war is Russia testing the United States to see how far it will go to defend European countries.
  • The aid we've provided so far is a tiny percentage of our total military budget. Much of what we've given is obsolete equipment by our standards that would cost money for us to hold on to or destroy.
  • The war has shown how much more effective our military equipment is than Russia's creating demand for our equipment all around the world, benefitting the US economy and the our global standing. Much of the aid money dedicated to new production has also been spent in the US, further stimulating our economy.
Maps:
Kharkiv this week (new):
https://preview.redd.it/yatu1y5pks0d1.png?width=1081&format=png&auto=webp&s=cb0e450bdeab2c1c1b3933d58460c8b9c0f4031d
  • Russia began it's offensive towards Kharkiv this week. It's unclear what exactly their goal is beyond expanding the front further, which they would do in order to stretch Ukrainian forces even thinner than they are. They were able to take a couple of small towns almost immediately before being stopped by Ukrainian reinforcements rushed to this sector. There is currently a difficult battle ongoing for the town of Vovchansk, though the Ukrainians are said to still control 95% of the town.
  • The Russians were able to take the ground they did because the Ukrainians built their defensive lines not right at the border but further inside the country, which makes sense especially because of the restrictions on striking inside Russia using American weapons. I have also seen some reports, however, that some Ukrainian defensive lines were built in places that don't make sense, without proper regard for the terrain in the area.
  • The Ukrainian commander initially in charge of this area was promptly sacked for incompetence and replaced with someone who is apparently very well respected.
  • I don't expect the Russians to be able to push much further in than they are now, but we'll see.
Kupiansk last week:

  • Russia took a small piece of territory here.

  • No changes.

  • Russia expanded their control to the north and south of Chasiv Yar, but the city itself remains firmly within Ukrainian hands, though very difficult battles are ongoing in this sector and it's possible that some of the troops sent to the Kharkiv front came from here.
Ocheretyne last week:
https://preview.redd.it/qhn2imlwms0d1.png?width=1078&format=png&auto=webp&s=5587673e4eb75511a9ae233b2771dee008757c6c

  • Russians took a couple small chunks of territory here.
I'm removing the Marinka maps because it's not a very important sector and I'm running up against the Substack email length limit with the Kharkiv and Kupiansk maps.
Robotyne last week:
https://preview.redd.it/cw2mmq7cns0d1.png?width=1095&format=png&auto=webp&s=230d8794fad6d7912f7069e0dc38b873c0795f6e

  • Russia took another bite out of the Robotyne salient this week.
Events this week:
  • As I already mentioned Russia launched their Kharkiv offensive, see above for more in depth analysis.
  • Ukraine struck a Russian airfield in Crimea with ATACMS missiles, and claimed the destruction of a Mig-31 (one of the most dangerous Russian aircraft), damage to 3 Su-27s, and the destruction of multiple pieces of equipment from an S-400 launcher. All of these are very important pieces of equipment to the Russian war effort, and the Mig-31s are impossible to replace.
  • The pro-Russian Prime Minister of Slovakia was shot and critically injured by an assailant who's identity has not been made public. He is still in the hospital with life-threatening injuries. We don't know anything about what the shooter's motive was.
  • The US is announcing weapons packages for Ukraine in quick succession. This week we announced another 2 billion dollar package, I don't know if it's contents have been made public, but the fast pace of these announcements show how much Ukraine needs this stuff.
  • France announced it was sending another batch of SAMP/T missiles to Ukraine, these are part of a very effective air defense system and are critically important.
  • Germany announced a 7 billion Euro aid package for Ukraine. Again, I don't know what exactly will be in it, but 7 billion Euros is a lot of money.
  • The UK also announced it's largest ever aid package to Ukraine. Seems like many nations are really stepping up their support.
  • The Prime Minister of Denmark said that Danish F-16s will be available for Ukraine within a month. We don't know if Ukraine actually has pilots yet who are capable of using these airframes, but I think they probably do, either people who were trained secretly since last year, or volunteer pilots from NATO countries.
  • Putin pushed through a very significant shakeup of the Russian Defense ministry, sidelining former defense minister and Prigozhin antagonist Shoigu to a practically meaningless advisory position and bringing in a civilian economist to run the show. This is a dangerous development as it means Putin is further consolidating control of the Russian state. Additionally, an economist is in many ways much more capable of sustainably transitioning Russia to a war economy than a general is. A Russia operating on a war economy basis where a large percentage of the nation's resources are dedicated to building war machines is a very dangerous foe, and Russians have shown the capability to endure scarcity in the civilian market in order to finance the military. Current Russian defense spending is about 6 or 7 percent of GDP I believe, very high compared to almost any other country in the world, but the Soviet Union for most of the Cold War was spending about 30 percent of it's budget on arms.
  • In order to bolster their manpower without pissing off Russians, the Kremlin is now actively recruiting troops from at least 21 different nations, mostly in Africa and Asia.
  • Russian oil giant Gazprom announced historically high losses in it's latest financial statement. This company was an incredibly profitable mainstay of the Russian state for many years, but the damage it has sustained due to sanctions has been severe.
Oryx Numbers:
  • Total Russian vehicle losses: 15,830 (+106)
  • Russian tank losses: 3,021 (+21)
  • Russian IFV losses: 3,999(+45)
  • Russian SPG losses: 732 (+2)
  • Russian SAM losses: 234 (+2)
  • Russian Naval losses: 24 (+0)
  • Russian Aircraft losses: 110 (+1)
  • Total Ukrainian vehicle losses: 5,729 (+50)
  • Ukrainian tank losses: 819 (+11)
  • Ukrainian IFV losses: 910 (+3)
  • Ukrainian SPG losses: 340 (+6)
  • Ukrainian SAM losses: 152 (+5)
About average Russian vehicle losses, same with Ukrainian except for the SPG and SAM losses which are above average. I expect that next week we may see much higher Russian losses as the toll from the Kharkiv offensive becomes clear.
Predictions (please don't take these too seriously):
Note, all predictions are now targeted towards August 1st 2024, unless otherwise specified.
  • Will Russia take Chasiv Yar: 55% (+5%)
  • Will Russia start it's offensive against Kharkiv: 70% Completed
  • Will Russia take Vovchansk: 45% (new)
  • Will Russia reach Komyshivka on the Ochereyne front: 55% (no change)
  • Will Ukraine be flying Gripens: 90% (no change)
  • Will Ukraine be flying F-16s: 95% (no change)
  • Will Hezbollah and Israel engage in full scale war: 20% (no change)
  • Will the Myanmar Junta fall: 45% (-5%)
As usual, thank you for reading and commenting, and let me know if you have any questions or any other predictions you want to see!
