2024.05.14 01:32 Legal_Gate_8250 Fresh Set of Eyes.

I was very anxious at the start and bawled my eyes out but now I’m better. I would feel nothing for weeks on end and I was afraid that I wouldn’t want SP anymore.
I know you said scripting isn’t a Neville thing but I’m just answering all the questions that were asked. I’m a writer and scripting is a way I used to express all my frustrations. It was what I used to do that gave me results.
1.) What have you studied? (Law of assumption?)
LOAss in general; states, EIYPO, let the old story go and buy the great pearl.. Self concept isn’t necessary but if you struggled with multiple SPs, it’s your sc issue.. kind of stuff. Infinite realities, world is my reflection.
2.)Which of Neville’s books and lectures have you read. Just saying all of them isn’t going to help much. Especially if you really haven’t.
I think I read almost everything.
3.)What techniques are you using?
Mainly affirmations now and occasionally meditation/visualisations. I used to do everything; mirror affirmations, inner conversations etc.
Now I tried to do mainly self concept and I want to focus on self but my mind wanders to SPs.
4.) Where did you learn the technique you are using?
When I first know of the law, I only had YouTube as the one and only resource. I learnt inner conversations then affirmations/visualisations etc. I didn’t have Reddit’s resources back then. I know that Neville talks about I AM affirmations so that’s what I used after I read Neville.
5.)Explain how you do the techniques you are doing.
I used to have a few pages of SC/SP affirmations that I’ll read but I recently cut it down to 10 affirmations only. Used to do mirror affirmations too when I first know of the law; I’ll go to the mirror and compliment myself so much that I fall madly in love with myself.
But now, I don’t know why it felt forced and fake.
6.) How long have you been doing the technique?
For my ex sp, over a year. Latter sp, months.
7.) what is your new story about you? Tell me how you are wording it. What the goal is using that new story.
I’m a highly pursued woman, chosen loved and wanted. Guys never get annoyed with me and adore/love me more as they get to know me better. I’m sexy and confident. I am irreplaceable and unforgettable. I’m more than good enough. My exes always come back. I’m ethereal. Guys I like, loves me back. There’s no competition in my reality because I’m the prize and nobody compares to me.
My goal is to feel extremely loved and confident again, and know that I can get every man I ever want. I want to be pursued by the man I used to pinned after so hard, without me having to lift a finger. I want to be that woman again, whom guys I like, likes me back. I want to have both ex sp and latter sp back.
8.) How long have you been telling the new story?
Truth to be told, abt over a year but I don’t know why I can’t be consistent.
Thank you.

2024.05.14 00:03 National-Ear470 Jujutsu Kaisen if Potential Man isn't a bum, part III.

I straight up forgot this thing's existence, sorry.
Previous part:
https://www.reddit.com/Jujutsufolk/s/avUngxEY41
Part III: Ignite.
This thing is *weak** ?*
Are you fucking kidding me ?????
It is stronger and smarter than both fake-Sukuna and the Finger Bearer combined ?????
Well, shame on me for trusting Gojo motherfucking Satoru of all people when it comes to powerscaling. What I need now isn't those useless thoughts, but a way out of this.
An advantage against a fire user is more shadow to use (when they havent created enough fire to leave no shade left, at least).
Constantly jumping in and out of shadow, skating on shadow covered surface, covering feets with liquid shadow to slide, occasionally getting fetched then dropped by Nue and riding short distance on Orochi before leaping (or being thrown) away...
I did it. I outmaneuvered the being called Jogo, one who moved fast enough that I can only barely make out his movements. His huge amount of CE basically broadcast where he is, yet I only survived the last 10 minutes by running on pure instinct.
Choosing the lake as the battlefield was a good idea. Water environment severely limited his firepower, no pun in ten ded. I also use my shadow to drain water from the lake and launch it toward him alongside Max Elephant's simultaneous water attacks. Perfect...
Oh my Gojo, he evaporated all these water attacks by his flame. If I got hit by one of them, I would turn into ashes immediately, I guess.
He seems running out of patience. Isthatadomainexpansion-
Good.
Inverted Spear of Heaven was a Cursed Tool capable of nullifying any Cursed Techniques, possessed by my bum of a father, and destroyed by Gojo eleven years ago.
The thing I am holding in my shadow now is merely an one-time use replica. That's why, I have to wait precisely for this moment.
The sound of barrier shattering is weirdly satisfying today.
My turn now.
Kangō An'eitei.

2024.05.13 23:13 Tacitus2389b4h5ii405 Raid Mechanics Spotlight 3

Raid Mechanics Spotlight 3

Raid Mechanics Spotlight 3:

Defensive Debuffs

\*Please note that the strategies covered here are not original to the author. Often, these strategies are collaborative works which have been developed by communities over time***

Overview:

Defensive debuffs can be used to increase damage to a raid boss significantly. Combining these with other support methods and offensive buffs can end raids in as little as one or two turns. Specific debuffs can be used to reduce Defense or Special Defense through the raid boss’s shield as well, something particularly useful in event raids.

Details:

Defensive debuffs work by changing the stat stages of a Pokémon, which changes the damage multiplier used during damage calculations. For a more thorough break down of stat stages, see the Raid Mechanics Spotlight 1. The table of damage multipliers has been included below.
Stat Stage Multiplier Table
Defensive debuffs put negative stat stages on a target. This multiplier then reduces the associated defense accordingly. So, for example, a raid boss who has negative four stat stages on their Defense will have their Defense multiplied by one third during damage calculations.
Defensive debuffs can be divided into two categories: Physical Defense debuffs and Special Defense debuffs. Those can be further subdivided into status moves and damaging moves. Status moves cannot be used through shield and can be disabled by Taunt. Damaging moves can be used through shield and cannot be disabled by Taunt, but are very limited in which Pokémon have them.
Physical Defensive Status debuff moves are: Screech, Leer, Tail Whip, Tickle, and Spicy Extract. Leer and Tail Whip aren't used as often as other moves on this list because they only lower Defense by one stat stage. Tickle also lowers Defense by one stat stage but it lowers Attack by one stat stage at the same time which can be particularly useful against bosses which buff themselves before the raid begins.
Screech is by far the most commonly used Physical Defensive Status debuff as it is available on a wide variety of Pokémon and it lowers Defense by two stat stages. The major drawback of Screech is its Accuracy which is only 85%; however, there are a number of ways to mitigate this. One way is with held items. Wide Lens can be used to increase Accuracy by 10%, which will make Screech’s Accuracy about 93%. This improvement isn't perfect, but many raiders find it sufficient for every day raids because often, if Screech does miss, they can simply use Screech again the next turn without fear of being knocked out or running out of time in their strategy. For event raids and farming raids for resources though, 93% isn't the best option. That's where Zoom Lens comes in. Zoom Lens increases accuracy by 20% as long as the user is slower than the target. This leads many raiders to make Screech supports with 0 Speed IVs and Relaxed or Sassy natures to get their Speed as low as possible. Popular Zoom Lens Screechers include Umbreon, Perrserker, both forms of Muk, Corviknight, Bastiodon, and Snorlax.
Items aren't the only way to increase Accuracy. Moves such as Gravity, Defog, and Sweet Scent can reduce raid boss Evasion, which is the same as boosting Accuracy. Additionally, Dipplin and Hydrapple have the ability Supersweet Syrup which lowers the Evasion of opposing Pokémon by one stage. There's also an ability called Compound Eyes which increases accuracy by 30%. Venonat is often used as a Screecher because it has Compound Eyes and has good bulk when it holds Eviolite, which increases both of its defenses by 50%. Yanma, Joltik, and Galvantula also have Compound Eyes and the move Screech, but aren't used as often for various reasons including lack of access to a Special Defense debuff move.
Spicy Extract is a very special debuff move because it is also a buff move. It lowers Defense by two stages and increases Attack by two stages. This can be a valuable tool but it can be dangerous as well. It shouldn't be used against a raid boss with a physical attack. If Spicy Extract is used on the raid boss, a raider can copy the Attack boost using the held item Mirror Herb. Using Simple Beam on the raid boss before Spicy Extract doubles both the debuff and buff and can be used to end raids as quickly as one turn if used correctly. For more information on Simple Beam and an example strategy using Simple Beam, Spicy Extract, and Mirror Herb, see the Raid Mechanics Spotlight 1. Spicy Extract is only available to Scovillain currently.
Physical Defensive Damaging debuff moves are: Fire Lash, Grav Apple, and Thunderous Kick. In Scarlet and Violet, each of these moves is only available on one Pokémon naturally (though Smeargle can learn them using Sketch) which greatly limits their use. Fire Lash is learned by Salazzle. Grav Apple is learned by Flapple. Neither of these is particularly bulky and isn't the best support for long raids, making them not particularly popular. Thunderous Kick is learned by Galarian Zapdos which, while reasonably bulky, doesn't possess a great deal of other support moves and isn't the most widely available Pokémon, only being available in Sword and Shield DLC or Pokémon GO. It should also be noted that all three of these moves only drop Defense by one stage, which is fairly slow compared to the Special Defense options in the damaging category.
While the above moves guarantee a Defense stat stage decrease, there are also a number of moves which have a chance to lower Defense. These can be useful in a pinch and as a backup moves, but aren't reliable enough to plan strategies around. These moves are Crunch, Crush Claw, Iron Tail, Liquidation, Razor Shell, Rock Smash, and Triple Arrows. Some of these moves have a drop chance as high as 50%, while others are significantly lower. Theoretically, Serene Grace could be Skill Swapped onto a Pokémon with access to one of the moves with a 50% drop chance, but in practice this is slow and not usually worth it or required.
Special Defense Status debuff moves are: Fake Tears and Metal Sound. Metal Sound has the same Accuracy as Screech. This makes Fake Tears far more common to use as it is 100% accurate. This allows Fake Tears users to hold an item like Covert Cloak to avoid secondary effects instead of holding a Wide or Zoom Lens without the need to increase accuracy through other methods.
Special Defense Damaging debuff moves are: Acid Spray, Apple Acid, and Lumina Crash. Acid Spray is the move common mainly due to the fact that it has the most possible users. It lowers Special Defense by two stages, which is extremely useful when compared to similar options on the Physical Defensive Damaging debuff side. Many, though by no means all, Acid Spray users have a Poison typing which can limit usage in raids where the boss has moves which are super effective against Poison Types. It should also be noted that Acid Spray will not work on Steel Tera bosses. Notable Acid Spray users are Venonat, Hisuian Qwilfish, both forms of Muk, Arbok, and Goodra.
Apple Acid and Lumina Crash are both limited to one Pokémon each currently (Smeargle notwithstanding). Apple Acid drops Special Defense by one stat stage and is only available to Appletun. What makes this move particularly useful is Appletun’s bulk and access to Giga Drain, which makes it an excellent solo raider. Lumina Crash, like Acid Spray, drops Special Defense by two stages and is available to Espathra. Unlike Acid Spray, Lumina Crash can be used against Steel Tera, but it cannot be
Like the Physical Defensive Damaging debuffs category, the Special Defense Damaging debuffs category has moves which have a chance to drop Special Defense but aren't guaranteed and thus aren't recommended for planning strategies. These moves are: Acid, Bug Buzz, Earth Power, Energy Ball, Flash Cannon, Focus Blast, Luster Purge, Psychic, Seed Flare, and Shadow Ball.
While debuffs in these categories can be extremely useful, there are a few things which can render them useless. One thing is certain abilities. If the attacker in your raid has the ability Unaware, it will ignore all stat changes to either defense, including your debuffs. Additionally, Pokémon with the ability Clear Body cannot be debuffed. The ability Contrary will reverse debuffs, making them buffs instead. Similarly, when a Pokémon with Defiant or Competitive is debuffed, their Attack or Special Attack, respectively, will increase by two stages. These abilities can be changed or neutralized using a move like Gastro Acid in order to make use of debuffs. For damaging moves to debuff, they must be able to hit their target. This means that Acid Spray will not work on Steel targets, Lumina Crash will not work on Dark targets, Apple Acid will not work on targets with the Sap Sipper ability, Fire Lash will not work on targets with the Flash Fire ability, and Thunderous Kick will not work on Ghost targets. Though raid bosses do not normally get items, theoretically if one were to hold a Clear Amulet they couldn't be debuffed until the item was knocked off using Knock Off. Raid bosses are also able to clear their stats and negative effects, which means that their negative stat stages will return to zero (though this will not affect their positive stat changes). The moves Clear Smog and Haze will remove all stat changes, both positive and negative. Clear Smog affects one target while Haze affects every Pokémon active on the field. The move Mist prevents all debuffs on the user. Mist can be cleared using Defog or bypassed using a Pokémon with the Infiltrator ability.
For those looking for a solid team of debuffers to start their raid team, this author recommends the following builds for Umbreon, Perrserker, and Muk.
These builds and Pokémon give you a variety of options to overcome obstacles. Together, they are strong against a number of types with one often covering the weaknesses of the others. Additional, these Pokémon are all slow, allowing for them to be used as Zoom Lens Screechers. They all also possess both physical and special defensive debuffs, with one of them even possessing a Special Defense Damaging debuff. While they will not cover every single situation, they will cover a great number of situations and allow for new raiders to find a place in most raids.
Note that the above builds are designed as Balanced Builds, which may not suit every situation but are designed to take the least amount of damage from both physical and special attacks. The given IVs are ideal IVs, but are by no means required for most situations. The Speed IVs tend to be more important due to the requirements of Zoom Lens, but plenty of raids will not require 0 Speed IVs.

Examples:

Here are some examples of specific strategies where debuffs can be used:

Basic Example:

Defensive Debuffs Basic Example
This is a two turn example strategy using Screech against a Bug Tera Goodra. Bug Tera was chosen to showcase this strategy against a type which takes super effective damage against Fire type moves, which we are using for the Attacker.
This example strategy begins, like many others, with buffs and debuffs changing stat stages. All of these actions happen at approximately the same time. Charizard uses Belly Drum to increase its Attack to the maximum six stages. Belly Drum also takes half of Charizard's HP, but a portion is restored using the Sitrus Berry. Mew uses Helping Hand to boost Charizard's next damaging move by 50%. Because this effect isn't used until Charizard uses a damaging move, it doesn't matter if Charizard uses Belly Drum before or after Mew uses Helping Hand.
Both Umbreons use Screech twice. Since the maximum amount a stat can be lowered is six stages, one of these Screeches is technically not needed, but for the sake of simplicity and ease of execution, the action has been included for both Umbreons. This way, both Umbreons do the same thing in both turns, rather than trying to do different things and possibly causing confusion among the players. These Screeches are all 100% accurate because Umbreon is holding a Zoom Lens and is naturally slower than Goodra as long as Umbreon has 0 Speed IVs and a Sassy nature.
To add a final extra boost, Mew uses an Attack Cheer to further boost damage from the team by 50%. This stacks with the boost from Helping Hand as well. Charizard then uses Temper Flare to achieve a One Hit Knock Out (OHKO) on Goodra.
This strategy can be found in the TRB here

The following are more advanced strategies that make use of Raid Mechanics which may be covered in future Spotlights:

Simple Spice:

This is a single turn example strategy using Simple Beam and Spicy Extract against a Psychic Tera Frosmoth. Psychic Tera was chosen to showcase this strategy against a type which takes super effective damage against Dark type moves, which we are using for the Attacker.
Spicy Extract, combined with Simple Beam, gives the Frosmoth raid boss 4 stages of Attack and minus 4 stages of Defense. Because Frosmoth has no physical attacks to make use of the 4 stages of Attack, this is fairly safe, but with other bosses, such as the Goodra above, this strategy would be much more dangerous. The fact that Frosmoth is a special attacker is also why Spoink was chosen over a similar Simple Beam Support like Golduck since it has particularly high Special Defense.
The Kingambit attacker copies the positive stat changes from Spicy Extract using the Mirror Herb that it holds, giving Kingambit 4 stages of Attack as well. When it does this, the Mirror Herb is used up. Florges then gives Kingambit the Choice Band using its Symbiosis ability. Florges further supports Kingambit by using Attack Cheer, though Helping Hand could be used instead. All of this gives Kingambit the strength it needs to achieve a one turn OHKO.
This strategy can be found in the TRB here

Acid Spray and Fake Tears:

Defensive Debuffs Acid Spray and Fake Tears Example
This is a three turn example strategy using Acid Spray and Fake Tears against a Grass Tera Vaporeon. Grass Tera was chosen to showcase this strategy against a type which takes not very effective damage to Electric type damage in order to showcase a high level of damage without the fear of overflow. Note that while this strategy is a three turn example, some may refer to it as a 2.25 turn example. The .25 indicates that only a single Pokémon moves on the third turn.
As the raid begins, Hadron Engine summons Electric Terrain before anything else can happen. The Electric Terrain will prevent Vaporeon from putting any of the raiders to sleep with Yawn and increase the power of Electric type moves by 30%. Additionally, the terrain activates Hadron Engine, which increases Miraidon’s Special Attack, and Quark Drive on Iron Moth. Iron Moth’s build has been designed specifically to ensure Quark Drive increases its Special Defense by 30% rather than its naturally high Special Attack. This is in contrast to the other builds which focus on overall damage mitigation, what is often referred to as Balanced or Optimal builds. An Iron Moth Balanced build would have 252 EVs in Defense and an Impish nature, rather than the 252 Special Defense EVs and Careful nature this Iron Moth has. Thanks to the extra Special Defense EVs, its Assault Vest held item, and the Special Defense boost from Quark Drive, Iron Moth is able to survive up to three critical hits from this Vaporeon, despite being weak to its Surf attack. Note that if the Tera type for Vaporeon was changed, Iron Moth and the other raiders might not survive as well due to the inclusion of Tera Blast in Vaporeon’s moves. This strategy would also be completely useless against a Ground Tera Vaporeon since Electric type attacks cannot hit Ground types.
The order of moves in the first turn doesn't matter, though this is not the case for turn two. Tinkatuff, aided in its survival by Eviolite, uses Fake Tears to lower Vaporeon's Special Defense by two stages. Iron Moth similarly uses Acid Spray to lower Vaporeon's Special Defense by two stages. Florges uses Helping Hand, which will persist on Miraidon until Miraidon uses a damaging move. This means that despite Miraidon using status moves in this strategy, the Helping Hand boost will not be used until it attacks. On the first turn, Miraidon uses Calm Mind to increase its Special Attack and Special Defense by one stage each.
On the second turn, move order is more important. Tinkatuff must move after Miraidon to avoid having Miraidon trapped using Charge by Choice Specs. So Miraidon, Iron Moth, and Flores move before Tinkatuff. Miraidon uses Charge, which increases its Special Defense by one stage and doubles the power of the next damaging Electric type move it uses. Iron Moth uses Acid Spray to lower Vaporeon's Special Defense another two stages for a total of six stages, which is the maximum it can be lowered. Florges uses an Attack Cheer to further boost damage done by its team. Then, Tinkatuff uses Fairy Wind on Miraidon. Since Fairy Wind is super effective on Miraidon, this activates Miraidon's Weakness Policy, the which increases Miraidon's Attack and Special Attack by two stages each. This puts Miraidon at a total of three stages of Special Attack. Once the Weakness Policy is used up, Florges passes its Choice Specs to Miraidon using its Symbiosis ability. Note that Symbiosis passes the held item of the Pokémon with that ability to which Pokémon uses an item first. To avoid having the Choice Specs passed to the wrong Pokémon, Miraidon is the only Pokémon in this strategy with a consumable item.
With the boosts from Calm Mind and Weakness Policy, the boost from Choice Specs, the debuffs from Fake Tears and Acid Spray, the boost from Helping Hand, the boost from Attack Cheer, and the boosts from Electric Terrain and Hadron Engine, Miraidon is able to knock out Vaporeon using one Electro Drift despite Vaporeon's Tera type resisting Electric damage.
This strategy can be found in the TRB here

Summary:

Defensive debuffs are at the heart of most raids strategies and provide a way to deal massive damage to raid bosses with each hit. Most debuffs are status moves, but some are damaging moves which can be useful in cases where a raid boss summons a shield.

2024.05.13 22:33 Tigra21 Hunter or Huntress Chapter 189: Reporting In

As the world faded away into nothing but a dark void, Tom felt the only mildly familiar sensation of magic flowing like a gentle stream. It wasn’t much of a draw, but it was certainly noticeable.
“Right, best make this quick then,” he tried thinking to himself, feeling the flow peak as he did.
“Who is this? Make what quick?” an ethereal sounding female voice replied. It did sound a bit like how he remembered Joelina sounding. Though she did not exactly sound calm.
“Uhm… Hello? Anyone there?”
“Yes hello. Who is this? What must be done quick? Answer me at once!”
“It’s Tom… Is that you, Joelina?”
“Yes of course it is! Stupid dragons taking ages, I have questions for you! So many questiiioooonssss...”
“Yeah I figured that… Fire away I suppose.” Tom replied a little uncertainly as to just what he might be in for.
“Firstly! Did you read the letters?”
“I did yeah…”
“Disregard them, I have learned much since they were written! So much more yes, cursed blessed knowledge…”
“So you do know we have gone to space then?”
“What? No, I re-experienced the memory you had of the movie about the moon mission. It was evident on the second watching that it was trickery of the eye! Spaceflight is but a myth!”
“Riiight.”
“Then how have your kind visited space? And what of the gods above!? it was evident that the woman with the crystals was but a fraud!” Joelina explained with all the calm and restraint of a shoppingmall Karen
“Well the rockets to the moon, that did happen.” Tom attempted, doing his best to remain calm and diplomatic. “The movie you saw was probably a recreation… Tell me, did things go wrong on that trip but they made it home anyway?”
“Yes, do you know of what I speak? Ahr what am I proclaiming! of course you do it is your own memories, how could I forget.”
“Yea…, you watched a movie about Apollo 13 I think. Good movie, and that all happened too. Like for real happened”
“I see…” Joelina replied, sounding rather unstable. “And what of the gods?”
“We ain’t got any. Well not in space at least.”
“Impossible!”
“No, quite possible. Many still believe in gods though, but let’s not get into that too much. It’s a right old mess.”
“No, you must tell me what happened to the gods? Have they left you?”
“Well some think so, but no. I just think it all works a bit different for us. They might be a little more hands off.”
“But the churches… and these religious warriors you did battle with,” the inquisitor all but muttered to herself, sounding like she was struggling to put pieces together. “Do Jesus and Islam fight for power then? no no, they would have long since lost the battles to the ancient gods of war the teachers spoke of… though why they were always naked eludes me yeeees…”
“No, again we don’t really have gods just floating around... Could we please talk about something else? Or is that all you wanted to know?” Tom tried, hoping he really didn’t have to dive deeper into that particular subject.
“No no don’t you dare cut me off! I have seen what you talked of, nuclear fire and missiles, ships of the oceans and planes soaring in the skies. But is it not all fake? Surely it must be! It must be? It must be…”
“I don’t know what you saw… but we have ships sailing around. If you’ve ever seen flying ships like you have here then that’s fake I can assure you of that. We do have airships, but they look more like really big long balloons.”
“But we could make such vessels, or someone could from times past. If you can visit the moon then surely you can make a ship for the skies!”
“No no, we ain’t got grav oil. Or dragon essence as I guess it’s called. That means no anti gravity, and that means weight is a very very big problem for anything you wanna make fly. Planes and helicopters are how we fly. Remember how I flew to Afghanistan on a big ass plane? Or when I learned to parachute later?”
“What is parachute? is it the ham from your times doing, vacationing? what has dried meat products got to do with flying machines of battle!”
“Wooo easy now easy. I guess you didn’t get that far yet. Uhm. It’s a cloth kite you dangle from and then glide to the ground. Very good fun.”
“A cloth kite used to fly?... such strange inventions. Wait was there not a movie of with something of that nature? yeeee… there was a song. I liked that song… something something brains upon his chute. Yeesss…”
“Yeah… You’ll know it when you see it. I have one actually.” Tom clarified trying not to get too weirded out.
“You must demonstrate on a suitable occasion.”
“Yeah… I do have a question too though,” Tom replied, letting silence reign for a short time. “...Your last letter was in Danish.”
“Oh, uhm yes. I- I was having some difficulty separating what was real and what was not… I still am. Do not tell Glazz, she musten know the truth yet. She seeks to limit my excursions.”
“You’ve ended up like I did, have you?”
“No no no, the effects do indeed recede as expected, everything is in good order… But I had to know more. So so much moooore.”
“Maybe you should cool it a bit. You never know when a brain snaps. Or how,” Tom tried, confident his advice would be ignored.
“There is not time!”
“And why is that? How is it going in our beloved Inquisition?”
“Mind your tongue, human! Things are progressing, but so are our enemies. Infiltrators have been caught, traitors within our ranks are making their moves. The reemergence of Rashan, attacks on mines, keeps and a daring heist attempt at a Royal Guard fortress! The game is afoot, we cannot delay.”
“You can’t overreach yourself either. Weren’t you supposed to be winning over the rest of the inquisition right about now? Can’t do that as a gibbering mess.”
There was silence for a while more after that. “Glazz sent you a letter? What did it say?! You may not keep secrets from me- wait not… I should confiscate her arm… she cannot write with her left. Yes far better plan, avoid upsetting him. And fill her pen with invisible ink. Yes very good.”
“No, it’s just obvious to any idiot. But what about winter, won’t things slow down?”
“They should, yet as autumn progresses it has only been picking up. I hope they too are running out of time… But time for what? I must know what they are planning. They might be behind schedule. But what SCHEDULE! sorry…”
“Well you’re not gonna find the answer to that in my memories, now are you?”
“You were sent by someone. You are here for a purpose. I must know this purpose. It will help me understand. The puzzle is large and much of the box kept from me.”
“As far as I’m concerned, I’m here to help you guys get in gear. That’s a decades to centuries long sorta problem, not a couple of years. Sounds like this war will be in the couple of years category.”
“Then why now? Why did you arrive now?!”
“Shitty luck? Sounds like 10 years ago would have been a lot better… Oh on that note, did you hear? We found something down below.”
“No, Paulin would have told me.”Joelina dismissed, he could almost feel her turning her snout up and away from him.
“Well we opened the vault like 3 days ago,” Tom replied, quite surprised Paulin hadn’t said anything. “Wait yeah she can send you messages, no? She sent the message about what we wanted to buy too, didn’t she?... How did she do that by the way? Why didn’t you just have her ask me questions?”
“That is not for you to know, and this is not for her.”
“Really? More secrets still? Come on, tell me or I’ll let you think flying whales exist.”
“I know those are not real. If they were, you would have harvested them long ago! likely for some deranged snack… or facial decoration.”
“True, but you get the idea,” Tom persisted, feeling like this was something worth pushing for. Why would Paulin not have let her precious Joelina know?
“Very well. This does not leave your mind… In the name of, what was it called… camaraderie. Paulin is in possession of joined paper. Messages may be written down and read by anyone with similarly joined paper. Unsecured. Originally believed to be fore love letters… dastardly studs and wenches using perfectly good magic for such trivialness… simply tie the message to a rock and throw it though the window. Most peasants cannot even afford glass” Joelina trailed off, seemingly zoning out once more.
“You have magical paper that can relay written information… and you don’t fucking use it!?” Tom explaimed, not quite believing what he was hearing.
“No, we do not know how to make freshly bonded paper… only more linked to all other paper in existence…” Joelina agreed. He could almost feel her looking at the floor in shame. “But it is not as if you are infallible, why did you not bring one of these radios?”
“I uhm…”
“Why didn’t you?!”
“I forgot,” Tom admitted, thinking back to his packing days. Of all the things that could have proven useful, that one might have been his biggest blunder.
“For the love of all that is holy! You are our saviour?!” Joelina scolded, understandably so, but still.
“Hey I never claimed to be smart!”
“I have lived your dreams. That is a lie! You very much claim to be smart!”
“Fuck off, I know you are just a scared little insecure girl.”
“She died 30 years ago!”
“Well I haven’t gotten to that bit yet!”
“What in the devils do you mean?” Joelina questioned calming right down in a fraction of a second.
“I’ve only had like three proper dreams about you… wait no, not like that,” Tom blurted out as it clicked just how wrong that sounded. Joelina didn’t seem to care in the slightest though.
“Three? That is it!?” going right back to outrage.
“Yeah… Wait, how many have you had?” Tom questioned. He rather wanted to know just how much she might know about him in addition to the memories she had already picked through when inside his head.
“Several a day!” the inquisitor exclaimed in reply.
“Okay, I can see how that would drive someone a bit mad.”
“I am not going mad!”
“Did Glazz say the same thing?” Tom questioned, quite certain he was striking a nerve.
There was no reply for quite some time, Tom feeling the headache growing as things grew tranquil once more. He could feel his breath. It was rapid, and his heart was pounding. He probably shouldn’t do this for much longer. Thus he endeavored to break the silence.
“You probably should listen to her you know.”
“No! These matters are above her station!”
“Hasn’t she been in the Inquisition longer than you?”
“She has yes. But she is no inquisitor. She is a body guard.”
“Seems like she is a wee bit more than that,” Tom pushed on. He didn’t yet know how those two came to stick together, but it was clear they had been working together for decades by now. All the way since she was assigned to Harvik
“Mind your own matters, human.”
“Very well, don’t think I can keep this up anyway.”
“We have barely been chatting! Where do the dogs come from?!”
“Selective breeding for thousands of years. But I’m gonna go. Take a break, do what Glazz says… even if Jacky hates her.”
Yet more silence followed that, though it was brief and Joelina was the first to speak again.
“Fine! In the interest of cooperation I shall let you rest. Wear the earring at all times, I shall be contacting you again soon.”
“I think I’m gonna be the judge of that. I’ll put it on when I feel like it.”
“You will do as I say!”
“You need a nap and a bit to calm down. I’ll give you three days. Around noon. See yah… How do I get this thing off?”
“I’m not telling you,” Joelina grumped like a little girl. She really didn’t seem quite like herself at all today. She had been the spitting image of restraint and arrogance before. The arrogance was still there, but the restraint had certainly gone.
“Come on, do I just try to cut off the magic or is that a bad idea?”
“If you answer a question I might answer.”
“Right then… Gimme gimme gimme aaaa-”
“JUST CUT IT! Farewell!” she called out loud enough Tom’s head pulsed and then there was blissful silence once more.
“Hehe. That did the trick, right concentrate on that funny feeling aaan-”
__________________________________________________________________________________
After dinner had been rounded up, Dakota had given a brief address as to some of the news received. There wasn’t much that hadn’t already made the rounds at the tables during the dinner itself. The war had been expanding, recruitment had started in full in the cities, and if not for the rather special situation at Bizmati they could have expected their banners to get called by spring.
Rumors had it that the kingdom was preparing itself for counterstrikes the following spring, which meant training through the winter for many volunteers.
“And a lot of not so volunteers,” Fengi muttered as Dakota carried on with the address.
“You can say that twice. At least the street rats might get something to eat and a place to sleep,” Tirox the trader escort added.
“I suppose that is true. Not a bad deal in winter time… I might even have taken it.”
“But we must instead keep our minds on our home,” Dakota carried on, talking to the whole hall. “There can be no mistake, we will be a target. We will be ready. They are getting bolder by the day it seems. It is not impossible they may attempt to take our keep before the winter comes. Or perhaps they will be waiting for spring. It is equally clear their forces are spread thin. We will weather such assaults, I have no doubt. But we must keep training. We must keep vigil. We cannot afford to be surprised or outmatched. I know you will all do your best. And tonight, we have no less than 4 dragons here. So breathe easy, have your snacks and your drinks. If the weather holds soon we will be finished with the warehouse and then we may make final preparations for winter. It is sure to be an interesting one for once.”
The hall replied with a half-discordant cheer, not overly enthusiastic unlike what Dakota had likely envisioned. The talk of them possibly getting attacked even before the snow came wasn’t really that encouraging. But Dakota tended to speak her mind, and she was probably right. Bizmati keep would be a damn tough nut to crack. And to Dakota’s credit she did seem to recognize she hadn’t really managed to rile them up.
“Didn’t you hear me?” she tried again in a slightly more humorous tone. “Eat, drink, and have fun! And put those tables together, don’t want you brooding in your corners.”
That did get a bit more of a reaction, as well as some good humored chuckles. People started getting up and set about moving the tables closer together.
It was a little rude to split up their guests in the same way as they normally did. Saph carried one of the benches over to the new spot, glancing around for any sign of Maiko, but there was no sign of him anywhere.
Feeling a little miffed, she sat down with the others as Ray came back with one of the small kegs of cider looking very excited. “We should have a taste, right?”
“Oh yes please!” Pho called out, Essy giving her a slight slap on the wrist.
“This one is only for those who paid for it. You will have to do with whatever you bought. Or the ale I’m sure they intend to serve.”
“Aww man. Not even a sip?”
“Okay, maybe a sip,” Essy relented. “Oh, I should get Koko his gift.”
“You got him a gift?” Saph questioned with mirth in her voice.
“Of course, that is what people do for each other… you did get Maiko something, right?”
Saph felt her expression slip a little as she prepared to disappoint their chief people person. “No, not really…”
“All that money and you didn’t get him shit? That’s cold girl,” Pho laughed, clearly finding it hilarious.
“Oh shut up, not as if I got something for Unkai either,” Fengi added, springing to Sapphire’s defence, though it seemed like the delivery had Fengi second guessing herself as well.
Esmeralda did look a little saddened by the news, but she was far too nice to say anything. Tirox however had no such filter.
“Oh don’t worry about it, just gotta go with a different sort of gift.” The diminutive guard laughed heartily at his joke. Udanti found it quite funny as well, and Pho certainly loved it. Bo just shook her head a little and went back to a small puzzle of some sort she had been working on, on and off, for most of the dinner by now.
“So uhm… One mug each?” Ray questioned, having been left hanging at the keg.
“Oh yes sorry, just the one, this stuff is expensive,” Saph replied, holding out her mug, Ray pushing it back down.
“One moment.” And she produced a wooden mallet and one of the metal taps. It looked like one of Raulf’s, so it was probably old as faded dragonscales.
Ray gingerly placed it against the cork and raised the mallet as the table fell silent in anticipation.
With a whack the tap went in clean with hardly a drop spilled, and Ray breathed a visible sigh of relief. “Right there we go.”
There was a quick round of cheers from the table, and Ray started pouring servings.
“Oh got yours open, have you?” the voice of Balethon came as the guard came walking up to the table, mug in hand and lizard on shoulder. “You all know we are gonna have to work out who got the better stuff, right?”
“Oh does it always have to be a competition with you, Balethon?” Saph questioned. She had just wanted to enjoy the cider.
“Look who is talking… And yeah of course we do! Just think of the bragging rights.”
Ray didn’t look too thrilled, nor did any of the girls who had actually paid for the keg. The rest of the table seemed to think it was a brilliant idea, even as Balethon’s voice carried and heads started to turn as people started to mingle between the now closely together tables.
“I’ll be the independent adjudicator!” Tirox declared, not receiving much attention as the full mugs started to get passed around. “Oh come on. I’ll be fair!”
“Shut it pipsqueak, you’ll end up taking 10 rounds of tastings before you make up your mind,” Udanti scolded, though in good humor.
“I might…” the guy relented, looking to Balethon. “Ey, by the way. Did you teach the brainlet any tricks?”
“Sure, Skitters can do a few things.”
“Aside from chasing the food?”
“You know what I think he might yeah,” Balethon replied sarcastically, gently tapping the static lizard twice on the head. The lizard didn’t do much save skitter about on his shoulder to face Balethon’s head, one eye pointing in whichever direction.
‘That thing just looks so dumb,’ Saph thought to herself as Ray handed her a mug. “Oh thank you.”
“Okay, Skitters. Up,” Balethon went, raising a claw into the air as if he wanted the lizard to jump. Or perhaps stand up. “Up… come on.”
There was no reaction from the lizard aside from it jerking to the left a bit, possibly having spotted a fly or something.
“Weeeell obedience might need some work,” Udanti chuckled. “Have you tried with some food in your hand?”
“Sure, then he just tries to eat the hand. Come on, Skitters. Up!” Balethon tried again, doing the gesture once more. And this time the little lizard jumped into the air. The little legs stretched out, taking its pitiful excuse for wings with it, and it half-fell half-glided to the floor where it hit with all the grace of a 6 year old on his first lesson. The slightly fat lizard bounced once, then rolled over twice before coming to a stop, looking around confused.
“Aaayyy! That’s a good boi,” Balethon went, going to pick it up again before someone stepped on it or it ran off under the tables. “And now you get a treat.” True to his word Skitters was fed a small piece of something or other which it seemed quite happy to snap up.
Fengi leaned in to whisper to Saph. “Was that the trick or did it just get sick of staying there?”
“I have no idea,” Saph replied, holding up her mug. “Cheers though.”
“Cheers,” Fengi replied as they clinked mugs.
“Oh hang on now, wait for me,” Essy protested as Ray finished pouring her mug and started on her own, looking to the girls as she questioned “Oh, also what about Jacky? Should we wait for her?”
“Who knows how long that will take?” Fengi replied, holding her mug impatiently.
“I’m sure she won’t mind. She is with Tom. We’ll let him have a mug as well,” Essy added with a reassuring nod, looking up to the high table. “Oh but we are missing Lin!”
“Oh right yeah she paid too… I can’t remember, did Edita chip in?”
“I don’t think so,” Sapphire replied, shaking her head as Essy got up to go fetch Linkosta. Balethon decided to take her place, a big grin on his face.
“So what else is going on over here?”
“Oh not much, hellooo little guy,” Pho went, trying to give skitters a scritching. In exchange he tried to eat her finger. “Oh… I mean I guess it doesn’t hurt.”
“Oh yeah, he can’t hurt a fly… well he can, but nothing more.”
“Shame he won’t get any bigger either,” Udanti added, nodding sagely. “Would have made a good rat hunter.”
“Nah… toe hunter though. Also where is the ale at?”
“Oh Raulf and Wiperna are getting ale and some of the bubble beer.”
“What is bubble beer?” Udanti questioned, tilting her head.
“Oh you’ll love it,” Saph interjected, waiting patiently as she saw Essy and Linkosta returning to the table out of the corner of her eye. “It’s an ale but it’s all fizzy.”
“Riiight… I’ve heard of fizzy beers before.”
“Oh yes, but this one is so much more fizzy.”
“It’s light and almost springlike.”
“Light ale? You mean for kids?”
“No no no. Just trust us it’s good.”
“Right right, I trust you,” the archer replied, looking to Essy and Linkosta, who seemed to be looking for a place to sit. “Should we not just put two end to end rather than this scrunching up business?”
“Yeah we should… Right get the craftsman table over here then. We don’t wanna have to smell the guards,” Saph called out, holding up her mug.
“Hey! That was uncalled for,” Balethon protested as Ray passed a mug to Linkosta. The girls all raised their mugs and had a sip, not willing to wait any longer. They all smacked their chops a little, looking down at the golden liquid. It was slightly fizzy too… and it tasted like the brew of the gods themselves. Ray was looking at them all visibly tense with anticipation and perhaps a twinge of fear.
“Ray… You have not disappointed,” Saph declared, nodding her approval, a smile creeping onto her face once more.
“Oh this is the best drink I think I’ve ever had,” Fengi added, taking another gentle sip.
Ray looked visibly relieved, her expression changing to one of ecstasy as she too took a sip herself. “Oh it’s even better than I remember. I’m glad you liked it.”
“Like it?! I love it!” Fengi cheers, Essy giving an appreciative nod to Ray before looking to Lin.
“Sooo?”
“It’s very good… Do you think we could try and cool it down a little? Imagine this cold.”
“It is often served cold, yes,” Ray confirmed, nodding her assent.
“I’ll go get the powder!” Saph called out, getting up. “I have got to try that.”

The strange ethereal world that had seemed so all-consuming started to quickly fade. Holes grew as light and reality started seeping in, sounds and noise starting to build around him. “Oom-Tom… Tom, are you okay?” came the familiar voice of Jacky as his eyes shot open and he blinked a few times as he returned to reality proper.
“Yeah yeah, I’m here… That is trippy, but hey, I think it worked.”
“How many fingers?” Jacky questioned, holding up her hand.
“4. Clear as day.”
“Pheeew. Okay look around, anything strange?”
Tom obeyed, sitting up a bit straighter and glancing about the room. “Nnnnn, nope all good. Just like last time I used one of these.”
“Right, good. Now what did she say?”
“Oh a bunch of stuff… mostly we chatted a bit about how she’s going a touch mad. Even Glazz thinks she’s falling apart at the seams apparently. She was also not happy I wanted a break.”
“Oh don’t tell me you have to do this every day from now on?”
“I said she had 3 days to get ready to try again. Hopefully she’ll have her case worked out by then.”
“Here’s to hoping… also how is your head? Does it hurt?”
“A bit, it’ll go away I’m sure.”
“Right,” Jacky replied, looking at him skeptically. “If it gets worse, tell me. But dinner was served a while ago I think. And I’m hungry.”
“Me too, let’s go.”

2024.05.13 22:14 Blankboo97 The Lost Women of NXIVM Part 7

PRODUCER: Do you have the suicide note?
HEIDI CLIFFORD (As “Anonymous Classmate”): (Reading purported “suicide note” aloud): This is a copy of the suicide note.
“I attended a course called Executive Success Programs, aka Nexium (sic), based out of Anchorage, Alaska and Albany, New York. I was brainwashed and my emotional center of the brain was killed and turned off. I still have feeling in my external skin, but my internal organs are rotting. I’m sorry, life. I didn’t know I was already dead.”
“No need to search my body.”
Was this potential suicide letter in Kris’s car coerced?
Was it her willingly writing it?
You don’t know.
As we have discussed in previous posts, nothing about the Kristin Snyder missing person case makes any sense whatsoever, and the purported “suicide note” found in her vehicle is certainly no exception.
Before we start analyzing the “suicide note,” here are a few factors to keep in mind:
• We know through information from multiple sources that Kristin was a prolific journal writer and letter writer, so we have a plethora of writing samples to compare with this alleged “suicide note.”
• We refer to “the writer” in our discussion of the “suicide note” below. The reason for this phrasing is because the actual writer of this note is unknown. Did Kristin herself write it, either as a explanation for killing herself, or for the purpose of faking her own death? Did someone else write it to make her disappearance appear to be a suicide? Was part of the text written by Kristin and added to by another party? Was the entire note faked? Was the note written by Kristin, but under duress/coercion as Heidi pondered?
• See notes under each section below regarding clear discrepancies between Kristin’s baseline writing style based on the hundreds of writing samples we have obtained from multiple sources through varying times throughout her life.
Now, without further ado, let’s take an in-depth look at this “suicide note” – line by line.
“I attended a course called Executive Success Programs (aka Nexium) based out of Anchorage, AK + Albany, NY.”
• Who is the note intended for? There is no salutation. We have tons of samples of Kristin’s letters and there is always a salutation – AND a date. If this is really her “suicide note,” why wouldn’t she address it to her partner Heidi, friends, coworkers, and/or family – as she always had addressed people in her letters? Similarly, wouldn’t she document the date of the most significant letter of her life, as she did routinely with her letters? In fact, she often even included the specific time (for instance, 7:15 p.m.) that the letter or journal entry was written.
• In addition to a salutation and date on other writing samples, Kris also typically indented her paragraphs and she also usually wrote on each line of the paper in her letters and journal entries, unlike this “suicide note,” which does neither.
• Related to the numerous writing samples we have acquired though multiple sources, Kris also primarily wrote in cursive in both her letters and in her journal. This “suicide note” is an odd hybrid of cursive and print.
• Why would anyone start a suicide note with “I attended a course…”? Clearly, the writer of this note is directing the reader to correlate ESP with the disappearance, but it seems like a very odd place for anyone to start a suicide note. Also, Kris attended two courses, not “a course”; a fact that Kris would have clearly known.
• “aka Nexium” is another oddity. Kris did not take any NXIVM classes, not even one, despite the extensive recent propaganda linking her to NXIVM. Why? Because NXIVM did not even exist at the time of Kristin’s disappearance; it was still in the planning stages. The writer had obviously heard about these plans as evidenced by the phonetic spelling. Again, it is obvious the writer of the note is clearly directing the reader’s attention to ESP/NXIVM – but if Kris were distraught enough to write a suicide note (and as functionally incapacitated as reported by her partner), why/how would she focus on minutiae like this?
• Speaking of minutiae, it gets even more obvious in the next words: “based out of Anchorage, AK + Albany, NY.” First of all, WHO CARES where ESP was based? That is in no way pertinent to the reasoning, and apparently is another clear attempt by the writer to direct the reader toward ESP/NXIVM. Secondly, this information is actually wrong. ESP wasn’t “based out of Anchorage, AK” – they held classes in Anchorage in a rented hotel space. The home base was in NY. Furthermore, Kris knew very well that this information was wrong, having recently visited their NY headquarters herself weeks before her disappearance!
•The words “based out of” (city, state) are odd as well. None of Kristin’s other writing samples did this. Nowhere does she mention elsewhere that anything is “based out of” anywhere in any of her copious writing samples we have obtained.
• Furthermore, why would the note say “Anchorage, AK” anyway? Presumably, Alaska law enforcement would be able to deduce that Anchorage is in Alaska without this unnecessary clarification.
“I was brainwashed + my emotional center of the brain was killed/turned off. I still have feeling in my external skin but my internal organs are rotting.”
• If Kris was brainwashed, she wouldn’t know (at least at the time) that she had been brainwashed. Again, this seems to be yet another clear attempt by the writer to direct the reader to look at ESP.
• Furthermore, if Kris finally did realize that she had been brainwashed, why would she then kill herself?
• The writer switches “my” and “the” in a sentence – something Kris never did, even once, in the hundreds of pages of writing we have obtained. The sentence should read “the emotional center of my brain,” not “my emotional center of the brain.”
• Another oddity is in the redundancy of “external skin.” Again, this sort of mistake does not appear to be Kris’s style, based on other writing samples. She had a Master of Science (M.S.) in Biology and she worked as an environmental consultant to the National Guard. She was a precise, clear, scientific, and articulate writer.
• This passage clearly implies that Kris was suffering from Cotard’s syndrome; per WebMD: “People with Cotard’s syndrome (also called walking corpse syndrome or Cotard’s delusion) believe that parts of their body are missing, or that they are dying, dead, or don’t exist.” We have talked to multiple people who Kris had visited in her January 2003 trip immediately prior to her February 2003 disappearance, and nobody reported any observations of any mental health issues, suicidal ideation, depression, psychosis, nor delusions of any sort. All of the people who discussed Kris’s reported mental health decline stated that they had not personally witnessed any symptoms, but rather, they were told of a rapid decline following Kris’s disappearance.
• If Kris thought she was already dead, why would she kill herself?
“Please contact my parents Bob + Jonnie Snyder at (number redacted) in Dillon, SC if you find me or this note.”
• Why would she specify to contact her parents, who lived out-of-state? Why not her partner? Why, in fact, is Heidi, the love of her life and civil union partner not mentioned AT ALL in the entire note?
• The inclusion of Kris’s parents as the sole contacts listed in the note contradicts a specific story told at the time of the disappearance alleging that Kris had uncovered memories of abuse during the class and that these purported memories were the reason/a factor in her alleged suicide. But: if that story was true, why would she include her father in the note? It should be noted that there is no evidence whatsoever that Kris was abused. As with the alleged rapid mental health decline, people who reported that story were not told of the purported abuse by Kris themselves, but rather, they were told of the purported abuse allegations after her disappearance. In fact, we even have been given a copy of a text message exchange in which the person who spread this abuse claims refers to it as “the lie.” This is yet another example of the myriad of inconsistencies and contradictions that plague Kris’s case.
• Why mention “Dillon, SC”? There is already a phone number given, so the city/state is irrelevant, and also, it is not her typical style. Again, it seems like someone with a quirky tic to mention a city and state wrote this.
• “if you find me or this note” is similarly nonsensical. If someone found her but NOT the note, they wouldn’t see the note, would they? Again, this oddity of wording is inconsistent with Kris’s typically precise style.
“I am sorry, life, I didn’t know I was already dead. May we persist into the future. KRISTN (sic) SNYDER”
• Again, if she thought she was already dead, why would she need to kill herself?
• Why is she addressing “life”?
• “May we persist into the future” is interesting. “Persist into the future” is a phrase used in ecology, which could potentially mean a couple things: a). Kristin wrote this herself; b). Kristin wrote this phrase elsewhere and someone traced/copied it onto the “suicide note”; or c). the writer had seen a document that referred to this phrase and used it.
• WHO LEAVES A LETTER OUT OF THEIR OWN NAME???? The second “I” is missing in “KRISTN.” Furthermore, as mentioned earlier, Kris predominantly wrote in cursive and she typically signed her name in cursive as well. Why, in the most important document of her life, would she BLOCK PRINT her name, and even more bizarre, why would she leave a letter out of her own name? The writer appears to drop letters and cram letters together, but there is no evidence from other writings that Kris did these things.
“No need to search for my body”
• Why was this written on the BACK of the page on the “suicide note”? And why was the note left inside of a notebook to begin with?
• Kris was a member of the Anchorage Nordic Ski Patrol, and therefore, she was involved in search and rescue. Therefore, she would already know that THEY WOULD SEARCH FOR HER ANYWAY. Also, more importantly, why would she intentionally hide her own body and therefore put her colleagues/friends on the search and rescue team through the extensive trouble and potential dangers of conducting the search for her?
• Why write “my body” on the back of the page but write “me” on the front of the page of the note? That is yet another incongruity.
• Why the emphasis on not looking for a body? The writer clearly has a very specific reason to mention this; there is a reason the writer does not want the body found. It is very rare for a person to want to hide his/her own body, and even more rare to be able to successfully do so.

2024.05.13 19:48 UnpopularBloom0 Would like some advice for upgrading build in the future, and opinion on current build

*A warning in advance, i am a complete noob when it comes to building pcs or PC parts so excuse any stupid statements.
I got the PC I have rn built by a local company for me in ~june 2022, since i just wasn't confident enough to do it myself. I wanted to know how long would it be before I need to start worrying about upgrades or changing / maintenance maybe of any parts, or if I would have to build a new PC instead as well as some opinions on the build itself. At the time of purchase i was just really excited to finally be able to build a PC and may have gone overboard with just blindly purchasing what seemed like the highest end parts. I worry that i may have picked some really inefficient parts in terms of value for money and since it costed a lot for me i would at least like to know if it ended up decent or if i scammed myself.
here is the the build with the amts i paid for it. *amounts are in INR

2024.05.13 19:36 hoyapolyneura Makeup virgin with a wedding coming up

My whole life I’m usually sweaty or covered in dirt, so my grimy ass has never bothered with makeup. I’m getting married soon and wedding photos are fast approaching and I need heeeelp. I want a lil something because I am a photographer and I know that makeup does make a difference on camera, but I don’t want to not look like myself. So far I’ve figured out mascara, those little mini fake lashes, and that liquid blush paint thing from glossier. I never wear foundation because I hate how it feels and I love my freckles. Is there a lightweight foundation out there that doesn’t cover your freckles but still evens skin tone a little bit? I’ve heard mixing foundation with lotion is a thing? Also, does liquid or pencil eyeliner work for a small cat eye?
I’m getting married in basically the middle of nowhere so I need to keep things simple enough I can do them myself.
I have also gone to artists before to see what can be done, and honestly I always feel like they do too much and I look weird :/

2024.05.13 19:27 JonasHalle A comprehensive review of pay to win mechanics and common excuses

"We won't allow paid items to affect survival rates in battles." is what they've said on Twitter. My previous low effort post on pay to win somehow got enough traction for them to tweet it, so this is the part where I make a higher effort post on what exactly "affects survival rates in battles", and how. I don't believe their statement is malicious or in bad faith, I just don't think they've thought all the ramifications of it through.
The simple way to put that I don't believe that their statement is genuine is that gear affects survival rates. If, in any way, real money translates to gear, paid items affect survival rates.
This is anything from paying real money to buy currency that then pays for gear, to saving currency by not losing things on death due to a larger secure container, to saving currency by not having to liquidate items inefficiently due to running out of storage space.
To be clear, winning isn't defined by an absolute guarantee to win a fight. It is an in-game advantage over someone with the same skill and playtime.
Convenience doesn't exist. "Pay for convenience" is a lie in PvP games, especially ones with wipes (which I remain unsure if they intend to have?). Acruing currency, even if it is over time, is paying to win, because currency buys gear which wins fights. Pay for convenience half-exists in games without PvP like Path of Exile, where it is commonly considered to be practically mandatory to buy storage tabs. It's much more reasonable because you're not fighting other players, and as such aren't really achieving the "winning" part of "pay to win". However, even then you are paying to win in the few competitive aspects of the game such as world first and leaderboards.
Now to address the common excuse of "paying to skip grind" and the "you can get it just by playing the game", including "it's not pay to win because you aren't buying exclusively paid items." All of these, quite obviously, aren't genuine arguments. Grinding IS the game. If, at any point, a singular person queues into a raid without the absolute best gear available to them, the game is pay to win if they could have paid to have that gear, even if they could "grind" to eventually buy it. There is no end game you're grinding towards that is considered the real game. This again goes double if the game has wipes. It's not like you're buying a level boost in WoW to skip a process that is neither competitive nor one that anyone really cares about. That is paying to skip a grind.
Now for one of my favourites, "they have to make money somehow." Yes, they do in fact have to make money. This is one of the reasons I refuse to support Gray Zone. They're making money from a singular upfront purchase, which is in no way a viable business model for a live action game. We've literally just seen the result of this business model in Tarkov. They've eventually reached the majority of the interested demographic and no longer make enough sales to maintain a live action game. You need consistent monetization. However, none of that indicates that pay to win (or any of the other fake terms) is the only way to make money. I really shouldn't have to put a list of games that make money without selling anything that affects gameplay. Tencent themselves own several examples, Valorant being the best one perhaps (yes they sell operators). Outside of cosmetics, I think releasing a game that isn't in an infinite beta state would also justify eventually selling DLC such as new maps (and please don't give the new maps way better loot, like Tarkov did with Lighthouse despite not selling it).
Finally, for a bit of a sidenote, secure containers are arguably worse than selling pure currency. People who have paid for currency, thus their gear, will drop that gear on death. In a well balanced game full loot PvP game, that means that lower geared players will go into that fight with high risk, but also high reward. They can loot the paid advantage if they beat them with superior skill. This doesn't make that fight fair, but it is at least balanced on macro terms by increasing the reward for the lower geared player. Secure containers on the other hand, do not only not drop on death, but they allow the paying player to either bring in more expensive heals that they can't drop (which appears to be less of an issue in this game), AND rush high loot areas to shove high value items in there that the superior skill player can't loot from their corpse, not only rewarding the paying player, but actively punishing the non-paying player.
To be clear, you're free to support and like some of these practises. If they allow you to have more fun, and perhaps exchange money you have plenty of, for time you have little of, you're allowed to prefer it. Similarly, the devs are free to do what they want, and it is literally the publisher's job to make the most money possible. Just please stop with all the excuses.

2024.05.13 19:14 dragonwizardlaser A Gently Used 2001 Honda Civic ($usedcar)

A Gently Used 2001 Honda Civic ($usedcar)
There's an active twitter group that wanted one of us to throw something in here. Str8 to the point:

usedcar launched in December and was part of the wave of OG memecoins. This is a crypto-native meme, referencing $doge's founder Jackson Palmer having sold all his doge for the value of a used Honda. Achi (the $doge dog) is driving the car. Also, Bezos has a viral video from the early days of him being interviewed in a gently used Civic.

The chart has had time to develop and form a bottom now, with a very committed and active (and nuts) community. Locked liquidity, dev is out except for a moonbag. The "gently used" meme has a lot of mindshare and it gets shouted out by lots of bigger accounts. It's sitting at a ridiculously low valuation of under 8m as I write this which seems like an extreme undervaluation to me (obv I have bags so I am biased, not financial advise etc etc).
The community is constantly cranking out content with videos, memes, and even tracks (I think 3 are on Spotify).
I think ppl had concerns about IP violations and getting this coin listed on CEXs, but unlike $popcat and $sc (and $pepe), the IP owners (Honda) seem down and playful about it, even referencing the meme in some of their own posts.
Alright, that's what I got.

2024.05.13 17:42 meghanmeowkle Post Trip Report: 1 Week in The Netherlands/Germany

Hi! I spent a little over a week in The Netherlands (Amsterdam, Zaanse Schans & Lisse) and Germany (Cologne) in late April/early May. I wanted to share my packing list & reflections in case it's helpful to anyone planning a spring trip!
About Me/My Trip:
Bags:
Jackets:
Pants:
Taking 3 pairs of jeans worked well - I ended up re-wearing these throughout the trip. Days would have been warm enough for shorts, but I'm glad I had jeans for mornings & evenings.
Tops:
The real MVP of this trip was the t-shirt + button down combos - mornings were cool (40's-50's) but by the end of the day I found it to be quite warm (70's but felt warmer in the sun - even ended up getting sunburned).
Shoes:
Accessories:
Misc Clothes:
All underwear and socks fit in a small compression cube - taking 2 pairs of underwear per day may seem excessive but is a non-negotiable for my comfort.
Toiletries (All liquids decanted into travel size bottles & labeled with painters tape except Rx marked with *):
This all fit in a Vera Bradley Travel Cosmetic Bag.
First Aid:
Misc:
All in all, I'm happy with what I packed! Looking back, I would not have packed the REI puffer or the Allbirds ballet flats to save space.

Gaotu Techedu, Inc ( $GOTU) is a total zombie. Beware!
I understand that a few people are curious about the profitability of shorting pump-and-dump scams in the current market environment. While it is possible to make good profits by shorting scams, it is important to note that inexperienced and under-capitalized speculators are more likely to get wiped out by top-down manipulations that rule over the securities market.
Navigating the financial market can be tough, often feeling like swimming against the current while being pursued by sharks. The system is designed to favor the "machine," so even the most sophisticated professionals can get blown out of their positions, regardless of the soundness of their thesis.
Shorting is a risky business, and the example of $GOTU highlights how a complete fraud was able to extract billions of dollars from short sellers before crashing to near zero. Unfortunately, the same company is being revived today by low-grade schemers in many investment forums and group chats to once again rip off small mom-and-pop speculators looking to get rich quick.

Gaotu Techedu, formerly GSX Techedu, Inc is a Chinese Ed company that provides online tutoring for K-12 students as well as foreign language and professional training courses for adult
In May 2020, Carson Block, the founder of Investment research firm Muddy Waters published a critical short report depicting the Chinese company as one of the worst stocks ever. He alleged that up to 80% of Gaotu users were fake. Despite Muddy Waters' report, Gaotu's stock continued rallying sharply in 2020, reaching highs over $140, likely driven by retail investors buying pressure and potentially by highly leveraged positions taken by hedge funds like Archegos Capital and Teng Yue Partners.
Archegos Capital, a family office run by Bill Hwang, amassed a massive undisclosed stake in GSX Techedu using total return swaps. This allowed Archegos to bypass disclosure requirements and accumulate positions exceeding typical thresholds without the knowledge of regulators or the market. Archegos built up exposure to GSX Techedu shares equal to over 70% of the company's outstanding stock by entering into swaps with multiple banks. As Archegos bought more swaps, the banks purchased the underlying GSX shares, artificially inflating the stock price. This enabled Archegos to manipulate and corner the market in GSX shares.
In March 2021, a drop in the value of securities underlying Archegos' swaps triggered margin calls the firm could not meet, leading banks to sell over $20 billion in stocks like GSX to cover losses. GSX's share price plummeted 52% over two days as a result of this forced liquidation.
The event sparked a market panic that resulted in Archegos Capital's downfall and Bill Hwang's end.
https://www.livemint.com/market/stock-market-news/his-firm-bet-160-billion-on-stocks-then-he-now-faces-380-years-in-jail-11651132350083.html
Goatu Techedu, Inc. was a known fraud. Yet, due to the clever use of financial derivatives such as swaps, its stock briefly surged well beyond its actual worth. This unexpected rise caught numerous honest short sellers off guard and potentially ended the careers of many.
Even Muddy Waters, the research firm that had first denounced GSX Techedu fraud was forced to liquidate its short position and take some losses on the squeeze.
Goldman Sachs, Credit Suisse, and other major Wall Street banks assisted Archegos in creating swaps that artificially inflated the value of the Chinese company. These banks then ably liquidated their positions at the peak, leading to a margin call against Archegos' highly leveraged investment in the company.
https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2021-03-27/goldman-sold-10-5-billion-of-stocks-in-block-trade-spree
In the end, the short seller who exposed the company's schemes was squeezed out of their position. The company's value dropped, causing losses for investors. The hedge fund behind the squeeze went bankrupt. However, the banks that backed the stock and profited from the swaps made significant gains selling their stocks while the market was thrown into a panic.
This story illustrates Wall Street's nature as a system created and operated to favor large banks and corporations, often at the cost of others.
Goatu TechEd Inc is still operating, although as a smaller company barely surviving since the strict regulations imposed by the CCP following the GSX-Muddy Waters-Archegos crash.
https://preview.redd.it/8mw881t4p40d1.png?width=5120&format=png&auto=webp&s=27641520a96feacffd247b504b7d0d4cea675122
Its stock is up by 125% y/y on a fairly mediocre interest by market participants. That is exactly the type of security favored by chat groups and social media scammers seeking to entrap quick riches dreamers.
I wouldn't be surprised to see this stock being promoted by certain dark corner groups on social media platforms. However, it is a structurally bankrupt Chinese shell that exists solely as a potential promotional scheme for internet pump-and-dump scammers.
To sum up, detecting fraud is relatively simpler than trading on it, given the numerous factors that affect the price of a stock. Being caught in a short squeeze can be an unpleasant experience that one wouldn't want even for their worst enemy. Therefore, it is best to adopt a philosophy of filtering out lower-quality securities and avoiding them altogether.
$GOTU is one of them. Stay away.

2024.05.13 13:02 Plankton_Etn Accounts & Account Types

Accounts

An Electroneum account is an entity with an ETN balance that can send transactions on the Electroneum Smart Chain. Accounts can be user-controlled or deployed as smart contracts.

Prerequisites

Accounts are a very beginner-friendly topic. But to help you better understand this page, we recommend you first read through our Introduction to the Electroneum Smart Chain.

Account types

Electroneum has two account types:
Both account types have the ability to:

Key differences

Externally-owned
Contract

An account examined

Electroneum accounts have four fields:
📷Diagram adapted from Ethereum EVM illustrated(opens in a new tab)↗

Externally-owned accounts and key pairs

An account is made up of a cryptographic pair of keys: public and private. They help prove that a transaction was actually signed by the sender and prevent forgeries. Your private key is what you use to sign transactions, so it grants you custody over the funds associated with your account. You never really hold cryptocurrency, you hold private keys – the funds are always on Electroneum's ledger.
This prevents malicious actors from broadcasting fake transactions because you can always verify the sender of a transaction.
If Alice wants to send ETN from her own account to Bob’s account, Alice needs to create a transaction request and send it out to the network for verification. Electroneum's usage of public-key cryptography ensures that Alice can prove that she originally initiated the transaction request. Without cryptographic mechanisms, a malicious adversary Eve could publicly broadcast a request that looks something like “send 5 ETH from Alice’s account to Eve’s account,” and no one would be able to verify that it didn’t come from Alice.

Account creation

When you want to create an account most libraries will generate you a random private key.
A private key is made up of 64 hex characters and can be encrypted with a password.
Example:
fffffffffffffffffffffffffffffffebaaedce6af48a03bbfd25e8cd036415f
The public key is generated from the private key using the Elliptic Curve Digital Signature Algorithm↗. You get a public address for your account by taking the last 20 bytes of the Keccak-256 hash of the public key and adding 0x to the beginning.
The following example shows how to use a signing tool called Clef↗ to generate a new account. Clef is an account management and signing tool that comes bundled with the Electroneum Smart Chain client, Etn-sc↗. The clef newaccount command creates a new key pair and saves them in an encrypted keystore.
Copy
> clef newaccount --keystore Please enter a password for the new account to be created: > ------------ INFO [10-2816:19:09.156] Your new key was generated address=0x5e97870f263700f46aa00d967821199b9bc5a120 WARN [10-2816:19:09.306] Please backup your key file path=/home/useelectroneum-sc/data/keystore/UTC--2022-10-28T15-19-08.000825927Z--5e97870f263700f46aa00d967821199b9bc5a120 WARN [10-2816:19:09.306] Please remember your password! Generated account 0x5e97870f263700f46aa00d967821199b9bc5a120
ETN-SC Documentation↗
It is possible to derive new public keys from your private key but you cannot derive a private key from public keys. This means it's vital to keep a private key safe and, as the name suggests, PRIVATE.
You need a private key to sign messages and transactions which output a signature. Others can then take the signature to derive your public key, proving the author of the message. In your application, you can use a javascript library to send transactions to the network.

Contract accounts

Contract accounts also have a 42 character hexadecimal address:
Example:
0x06012c8cf97bead5deae237070f9587f8e7a266d
The contract address is usually given when a contract is deployed to the Electroneum Smart Chain. The address comes from the creator's address and the number of transactions sent from that address (the “nonce”).

A note on wallets

An account is not a wallet. An account is the keypair for a user-owned Electroneum account. A wallet is an interface or application that lets you interact with your Electroneum account.

A visual demo

Watch Austin walk you through hash functions, and key pairs.

Stay away from RobingHood
Robinhood is just a Front end created for the Crypto Cartel/Market Makers.
In Crypto, Market Makers pool their network of exchanges liquidity. They move this pool around from exchange to exchange, covering liquidity as needed. Pooling all the inbound customer assets from exchanges allows this Network to offload much of it, in whatever ways they choose. They only need "X"% of it to keep withdrawls whole across their network of Blockchains.
They create Robinhood, Paypal, Venmo, Crypto side to offer a product with a front end, to get consumers to buy the Market Makers crypto holdings being pushed. The Market Makers KPI farm, by creating thousand and thousands of fake users via new wallet address'. They send in minimal crypto, often <.01 eth. They create promos like a "SHIB giveaway for all new customers". It helps the MM offload their sht tokens they created out of thin air, like SBI Holdings did when they created $SHIB. Then, to help drive inerest in the Exchange, and a rise in Stock Price, they In turn promote these "new" users, which their Market Maker created for the Public facing exchange, and talk about the new deposits seen, which is just the market makers moving funds from other exchanges temporarily. This allows a rise in token price, and gain in liquidity. For Crypto companies setup by the Crypto Cartel, this means they can now sell shares in these companies, convert the capital to their holdings, and cover any losses they had, take profits, or use it to inflate the price of where the Market Makers have a vested interest. They pump stock, sell shares, and in turn buy Crypto to cover where they are short.
This is a core part of the game. Every dollar that comes in, they can take out, as long as they can cover the Rate of Withdrawals. They can use this game to market, offload the Public shares they own, and extend their runway and Crypto's pricing.

2024.05.13 05:05 BlueberryRegular3760 Four great monologues for teenagers

“My Mask up Tutorial” Samuel D. Hunter
Every day at 5:30 am, I put on my makeup. I lay down the perfect foundation that covers my pores, put on my eyeliner to make my outer corners soar. And once the setting spray sets in, I’ve got my mask up. I’m shackled into this morning routine. My very hands are tied to the clasps of my makeup case. With each buckle undone, I feel security’s embrace. The case hides my inner self, never to be seen. My foundation was laid on unstable land. Each crack in my skin widens with obscurity. Every zit threatens to burst out the pus of insecurity. Once the foundation breaks down, it may abolish my brand. I make sure my blush is crimson red to hide the scars of my traumatized past. Then, the blush clogs the scar tissue, so the bloodshot color lasts, and it never covers the scars in my head. I use the contour to lift my face to a happy smile. It rewrites the shadows of my low sunken cheekbones, and lifts them up to make my false confidence shown. For a brief moment, it makes my ego un-fragile. My pointy, thick eyeliner sharpens my drooping eyes. Behind my eyelids are islands of cryin’, and styes that lie high while my vision’s fryin’. To sharpen my eyes would allow them to dry. The mask of makeup has worn down my face. Hiding my soul has dragged it to a lower place. I want nothing more than a soul clean and true, so I’ll take a few wipes, and try something new.I’ll remove the foundation, plow down the cracks to show nature’s creation. Reveal the strawberry freckles I once tried to hide. And, clean out the pores that were clogged so wide. I’ll remove the crimson blush, unsilence the scars I tried to hush. Although trauma’s gnash will feel agonizing at first, I’ll let the scars heal until they’re visible as dust.I’ll remove the contour, un-lift the face that made my fake smile sore. Maybe even realize sometimes it's okay to not be okay. Morphing my face’s shadows only causes delay. I’ll remove my eyeliner, stare at my soul ‘till I see the love behind her. Uncover the truth that my eyes were always sharper when they weren’t hidden behind a steep black sliver. My makeup tutorial became a mask-up tutorial. Morphing my truth to be happy is purely paradoxical. I once longed for the face of another, and now I just miss the face from my mother.
“Psychotherapy” Samuel D. Hunter I will start a revolution in the world of psychotherapy for those who can’t afford it. For little Jimmy that lost his father For little Sally whose mom is too drugged up to care for her. For teenage Sam with no friends at school. And even for Charlotte who spent her adult years in prison. America treats its mental health with bandaids doused in alcohol and loaded with guns. And, it keeps the real solutions locked behind a safe with a passcode that reads “90 dollars per session.” Therapy helped me learn my most important lessons, so I’ll start a non-profit for those who need it, but lack the needed insurance. I’ll keep our community in reassurance that someone will always be here to listen. The study of psychology’s opened my every pore to an empathetic door. And, gifted me the words to heal mental sores. “The Car is Your World” Ilissa Ocko Ted Talk excerpt
In a smoldering black parking lot, there exists your car. The car is your planet. The car’s vents pump carbon into the air, entrapping the noxious heat in the cramped cabin. Yet, you let it happen. You let it melt your car into a pool of plastic and metal. You let it melt your food into a sticky glove-box coating. Your laziness pins you to your leather seat And once it starts to melt, it sticks you down. Within your car, there exists a steering wheel. The wheel’s magnesium rim turns to liquid, rehoming your hands. Your palms could once rest on the firm rubber grip, but now, they must fend in the sea of metals. There was once a time when you tried to escape your car. You tried to build rockets to fly through the windshield, instead of trying to fix what you already had. Yet, you failed to realize that the new car you were looking for was uninhabitable. Its tank was empty, there was no food in the glove box, and the air vents sucked out every last drop of O2. What’s more? Even if you wanted to leave- you couldn’t. The same gas you used to power your car has run dry. You cannot build a rocket with no fuel. Finally, within your car exists you. The carbon from your vents overpowers the oxygen and suffocates you, asphyxiating your lungs and choking you from the inside out. The boiling black leather seats pelt your skin. Much like the carbon, your gasoline greed has grounded you. The locks have melted to an unfamiliar mold, and sealed you shut. If the car is your world, then, the world is our car.Politicians ignore the heat trapped from our star.
“The Butcher” Samuel D. Hunter
Being with you was sweet at first. We went to cafes and fairs and all those other charming places. You fed me the sweetest corn feed. I thought I was the type of pig you would treat as a pet, rather than food. Yet, I ignored your long, blood-stained white apron, and the square razor-sharp knife dangling from your waistband. The corn you fed me soon turned stale and bitter. It swelled my throat and boiled my stomach as I tried to digest it all. It was laced with expired benadryl to make me docile You then threw your sticks and stones. They broke my bones, because you knew your words could hurt me.They held me hostage, waiting in the slaughterhouse. With each friendshipI severed for you, and each skirt I wore that was a little too short, you drew your blade. You beat my legs with its end so I couldn’t run. I scurried and scurried, but when I got to the door, you threatened your life, and I scurried back. The worst part was that the same rules and expectations laid out for me had no application to you. You could compare me to whoever you pleased. You could flirt with who you pleased. And, you could walk out that door when you pleased, because you had the blade, and I had the shattered bones. So, when my legs just barely healed and I stood up, you chopped off my head and walked through the door. You walked out and told the world of how you were the pig, and I was the narcissistic butcher. But my vocal cords were shredded in the beheading, so I couldn’t speak.
I’m not that beheaded pig I once was. My head grew anew, and I evolved to walk and stand as a human. My squeals became words, and my words became boulders crafted from the same blade you once broke me with.

2024.05.13 02:47 FreeMeFromThis- I was a hoax paranormal investigator, right up until I met the family that showed me hell itself

I know that ‘immoral’ doesn’t quite cover it.
It isn’t as though I awoke one morning and decided that was the Thursday I was going to roll out of bed and become a piece of shit. I didn’t pull on last year’s trainers and make a pact with myself that my bank balance would triple because I was going to become a ghost-hunting scam artist, greasing my endless lies with snake oil. But it doesn’t matter, not really. Karma came for me in a big way, and it was deserved.
We gained a bit of a niche following online, nothing to write home about but we made our money from donations and of course, the cold hard cash from the people we sucked the life out of. I won’t bore with fine details, but we ghostbusted nineteen homes before we reached the Whistlebys. With each home, we bought more equipment to really add credence to the whole wraith-wrangler thing. We turned creaky floorboards into demons, water tank leaks into internet views. It was fun, until it wasn’t.
I’d never met a family quite like them.
The others, they were young couples afraid of whistling wind, old singles desperate for validation that their home wasn’t heavy with the weight of vengeful spirits. It was easy, muscle memory. But the Whistlebys - god, they were terrified. Young parents and two children with their family dog, cowering in the corner when we set up for our bullshit interview. The daughter was so pale she seemed to sink into the walls behind her, face gaunt and eyes haunted. It was her we latched onto as we probed, stifling excited smirks with our palms.
“He never leaves,” she whispered, staring through us as if we weren’t really there. If her eyes glimmered once, they certainly didn’t now; lost and soulless as she gazed into the abyss. It was Adam who managed to coax the words from her lips, voice soft as he gently probed.
“Who is he? We have plenty of equipment here to find him in whatever corner he’s hiding, we just need to know as much as you can tell us.”
A wry smile made its way onto her lips as she finally looked at Adam, voice low and deliberate. “You don’t need to find him. You’ll know where he is, I promise. He walks on the ceiling and crawls down the walls. He’ll find you.”
The young girl’s mum spoke suddenly, eyes full of tears. “She didn’t used to speak this way,” she breathed, gaze darting around the room, “She’s so tired. So tired. She doesn’t sleep anymore, it doesn’t let her.”
Jonah stood up then, grinning as he clutched his camera for dear life. “Ma’am, don’t you worry for a second, you’re in the right hands. We’ll find out what your visitor wants, and we’ll cast him right outta here. You have my word.”
His word meant nothing, but they didn’t need to know that. The fear in their aura was palpable, it was as if they had their own pulsing circle of gravity sucking the life from the room. Their dread did something foreign to me: it made me nervous. In all the nighttime giggling and masquerading in people’s homes, I’d never been scared. To do this job was to know that ghosts were as real as fairies in whimsical tales, it was to laugh at the notion. But during that interview, I wasn’t laughing. The girl’s eyes were black holes, and they looked like they’d sucked her soul out long ago. So, with the image of those eyes burned into my retinas, we did what we did best. 11 pm rolled around and with the family booked into a hotel, it was showtime.
“Show yourself, demon!” Jonah lunged through the front door as nighttime blanketed the house in darkness, hauling our masses of equipment through. We didn’t need any of it, obviously, but it made people feel as though we were legitimately expelling ghosts from their homes with the flick of a battered crucifix.
Adam rolled his eyes, glancing down at the EMF reader in his hand. “Bro, come on. Did you see how scared that girl was? I feel a little bad.”
“Shit, she was creepy,” Jonah chomped on his gum, leaving muddy boot stains as he clambered up on the sofa to stick his camera to the wall, “He walks on the ceiling. Dude must have the mother of all headaches.”
I stayed quiet, chewing my lip as I set up our audio equipment and eyed the tired-looking lump of plastic. The older it looks, the more authentic it appears Jonah had assured me, and sure, I supposed it did look like it belonged in a 1998 horror game, but it was pretty shit. Not that we’d ever picked up anything on it before - there was the great scare of house 12 when the fridge appeared to hum a lilting tune, but it was just super broken.
“Right,” Jonah jumped downwards, nearly knocking over the coffee table, “Plan is Megan Donovan is leaving the house party you guys didn’t wanna go to at like 2 am. I say we wrap up here by 1 am, swing by the party and I’ll be her shoulder to cry on because her douchebag boyfriend was a dick again all night.”
Adam scowled as Jonah cackled but I stayed mute, casting my eyes around the room. I couldn’t deny this place felt different, somehow. Even with all the lights dancing across the house, there sat an empty, tepid coldness that seemed to seep through the walls. There was no warmth here, no safety. Loving family photos littered the room, but somehow it felt barren. Wrong.
“I’m down to do this quickly, at least,” Adam muttered, eyes darting around nervously, “You guys feel that? Place feels…”
“Haunted?” I finished for him, rolling my eyes at Jonah’s guffaws.
“Alright, if you’re both gonna be pussies, I’ll get started,” he stared ominously into our main camera placed across the room, red light blinking towards the sofa we were sitting on, “It’s time, everyone. As always, first, we’ll try to contact the ghost, and see if we pick up anything on the microphone or the EMF.”
Clearing his throat, Adam stole a glance at me. “Uh, okay. We’re here in your domain, ghost,” he tried to project but I heard the slight crack in his voice, “We’re here to find out what you want, why you haunt this family. We’re here to set you free.”
I counted down from six, bulging my eyes as I shrieked, throwing myself backwards. “No way,” I bellowed, pointing off camera, “There’s no way!”
And we did the usual scramble, all of us claiming we saw a photo frame go flying, switching to shaky hand cam footage as Jonah retrieved it from the floor we laid it on earlier. It was rehearsed, but something just felt different. It’s hard to describe, but I couldn’t shake the feeling a pair of eyes were locked onto me, a horrid gaze burning into my back. The feeling amplified as we pulled out the trusty Ouija board only moments later, laying it on the table and pushing it into frame. I scratched at my arms nervously, trying not to stare at the shadows that seemed to be consuming the room.
“Alright,” Jonah muttered, placing his finger on the planchette, “I ask its name, we give it something creepy like Maurice. I’ll move it, you guys just stay still.”
“Feel free to run the show on this one,” I offered, goosebumps erupting over my skin. Had it gotten colder in here? Adam certainly thought so as he hugged his hoodie tighter, shaking something off as he placed his finger on the planchette with us. The dread was otherworldly, beginning to creep across my skin and begging me to stop.
“Spirit,” Jonah demanded, dramatically eyeing each corner of the room, “Make yourself known to us. Show us. Communicate with us! I want to ask what name gives you your power. What is your name, ghost?”
He waited a fairly believable amount of time before the planchette slowly began to move towards M, but I knew my heart wasn’t in my lacklustre reaction. Jonah would yell at me later, claiming I ruined the entire Ouija shot, but I swore I could see something in my peripheral. Just out of view, staring at me. I didn’t turn my head, didn’t dare. Instead, I gritted my teeth and focused on the board, letting my jaw drop dramatically.
M-A-U-R-I
And just like that, the planchette halted. Painfully, almost. Jonah scowled, head snapping to us. “Really?! Dude, I was nearly finished-”
You stopped,” I argued, wondering if it was a blanket on the bookshelf or a crumpled-up man staring dead-eyed at me, as I was beginning to suspect it was.
“Just do it again,” Adam grumbled, and it wasn’t usually like this. We didn’t fight, we didn’t bite. The house felt as though it was draining the life from us, the joy. I felt physically tired, as though even being here was soul-sucking. But, as I told myself, ghosts were not real. We were not real. We were opportunistic bastards and we were leaving at 1 am.
The planchette moved to M with ease again and we forced our shock, but with less enthusiasm this time. It seemed even Jonah was struggling now, eyebrows knitted together tensely.
M-A-U-R-I-C

And it stopped again, but this time it jerked to the left, causing a gasp to leave Adam’s lips. “Jonah, for fuck-”
“What is your problem?” Jonah cried, looking between us as though we were crazy, “Ever since we got in here, you’ve been acting like a couple of little girls. I swear to god, if Megan-”
But his words died on his lips, because - as we all scowled at one another - the planchette yanked our waiting fingers in the opposite direction, landing on a letter.
B
“Adam, for Christ-”

E

The planchette scraped horribly against the Ouija board and I couldn’t tear my eyes away, sitting between the chaos of my friends arguing as each blamed the other, neither paying enough attention to the board. I swallowed, trying to watch for a twitch of the muscles in their fingers, some indication of which one was fucking with us.
E
But there was none. Their fingers were light, barely grazing the object jerking clumsily around the board. Adam met my eyes, trepidation lining his features. “Listen, I just want to get this shit done and get out of here. If this is you-”
L
“It isn’t,” I returned, voice lost in the sound of Jonah growling and wrenching up the planchette, launching it across the room till it hit the wall with a sickening crack. I could only stare in shock at my furious, panting friend but Adam leapt upwards, throwing his arms out in question.
“You can’t be serious! Jonah, for fuck sake, what is wrong with you?”
And they argued. Yelled, threw their arms around, ignored the room. But I couldn’t ignore the room. I hadn’t been able to ignore it from the second we’d stepped in here, the atmosphere wrapping around my throat from the very first second we’d dared. And they weren’t seeing it, but I was. The blanket in the corner of the room, hanging limply from the figure underneath it. Tall, impossibly tall, shrouded in shadow and with the fabric sagging off it horribly.
“Shut up,” I whispered to the boys next to me, but they didn’t stop. They didn’t stop as the blanket began to drag closer towards us, the sound of toenails scraping on the floor echoing louder than even my friends. I could see the silhouette underneath it, the darkness that followed. The cold. But they didn’t notice, not until a screech sounded, sending our eyes all in the direction of the bleeping monstrosity.
“Fuck,” Adam cried, shaking his head at the EMF detector which was flashing a bloody red colour and wailing to attention. I was only distracted momentarily from the carnage, turning around in time to feel a horrid whoosh of air as the blanket fell into a crumpled heap a mere inch from my nose, dropping to my feet. The air was sucked from my lungs as I tumbled backwards, collapsing on the sofa and gasping instead of forming words. Adam looked upon me with concern, but Jonah was done.
“Nah,” he growled, wincing at the wail of the EMF machine, “Listen, I’m not doing this all over again. Come here, let’s do something with this godforsaken thing. Grab it, wave it around, just fucking get up.”
My eyes were still darting around the room and only pulled from their trance as a buzzing fly landed on my hand, narrowly avoiding death with the flick of my shaking finger. It woke me up, my voice sounding more strained than I would’ve liked. “Are you hearing that? It’s detecting something, Jonah, I swear to god I saw-”
“Faulty microwave, shitty electrics, I don’t know,” his voice raised threateningly, “Seriously, stop. Let’s leave the room and run in, we’ll act shocked about the EMF, we’ll walk around a bit, and then we’re going. I’m sick of you both.”
I should’ve argued. Obviously, I should’ve argued. But I can’t describe the way I felt in that moment - it was as though my fear gave way to denial so quickly that I was already calling myself crazy, reaching desperately for the idea that no, I was seeing things. Feeling things. As though I needed to prove to myself that I was crazy, and the horrors my mind was conjuring simply couldn’t exist.
So I stayed.
I stayed as the three of us trudged out of the living room, as we all pulled our clothes tighter and ignored the ice seeping into our skin. I ignored Adam squeezing my shoulder, a sentiment he’d never bothered with before. I ignored my thudding heart as we clutched our cameras, bursting into the living room in our most epic movie yet, ready to contort our faces in horror.
But we didn’t have to fake it.
In the corner was our screaming EMF reader, blinking red as it had been for the last 5 minutes. But the problem was the endless claws wrapped around it, attached to a figure so tall its head brushed the ceiling and black eyes glared upon us. It swayed in the shadows but I could see its arms, gaunt and as long as its legs, neck cracking awfully as it turned to look at us in an instant. A sick dripping sounded just loud enough for us to hear, and to this day, I imagine it as thick, crimson blood falling from its fingers onto its dead, curled toes.
“Holy shit,” Adam whispered, so I knew in fact, I hadn’t lost my mind. We ran, of course. Scared idiots launching themselves backwards and tripping over everything, legs jelly as we bolted for the front door. I cursed myself for not leaving more quickly, begged for a time machine to have me believe my eyes the first time. We didn’t make it. There in the hallway was our 1998 horror movie audio device, except now it was crackling and a rasp sounded from it, too deep and gravelly to be human. Layers of voices sounded at once, so distorted I could barely make them out.
“I smell your blood,” it rasped, the voice touching me so closely I could practically feel it inside of me, “I’ll suck it out of your veins and wear your skin.”
And then, before there was time to react, every lightbulb in the house smashed at once. I know, because I heard the shards hit the floor in every room. Cried out as pure darkness filled the space, leaving me with no idea where my friends were and if they even existed anymore.
“The door won’t fucking open!” Adam screeched from my right, audibly jamming the handle, “It won’t open!”
“Where’s the crucifix?” Jonah begged, and I could hear the tears in his voice, “Adam, where?!”
But now it was only footsteps we heard. Not slow ones. Thudding, loud footsteps, gaining pace and getting louder and louder, till it sounded like something was running at us. But the sound didn’t come from the floor. With the most gut-wrenching feeling of horror, I realised it was coming from the ceiling.
“Oh my god,” Adam’s voice was below me somewhere, because he’d fallen down into a heap of fear, “What the fuck is that? What is that?!
It was deafening, all of it. The wailing EMF detector, the rasp of crackling audio threatening to break all our bones at once, the footsteps slamming to a stop directly above my head. All leading to the moment I looked up, a silent tear disappearing in a slow trickle down my cheek.
Its body was contorted horribly as it glowered down from the ceiling, neck cracked at an unnatural angle with bones jutting out everywhere. Dead, black holes for eyes bored into mine, hell radiating from them in such a way that I was knocked to the floor by the sheer force of it. Rows of razor teeth were pulled back into a horrific grin, stretching much in the way its wings did as they grazed the ceiling, reams of liquid trickling from them onto our heads.
Hell. Staring from above me.
My memory is hazy, and part of me thinks my brain tried to erase the trauma to give myself half a chance to go on with my life. I remember Jonah being lifted into the air with such a guttural wail that I’ve never heard a sound like it since. Remember the sound of his bones crackling as we ran, making straight for the living room. We threw furniture at the window, and ignored the thud of Jonah’s lifeless body being hurled at us, hitting the wall with a sick crack.
I know we got out. I felt its eyes burning from behind me as our skin snagged on glass, as we sprinted into the hammering rain, screaming for any help we could find. When the paramedics came, most of Jonah’s leg had already been eaten, the remains nowhere to be found. He woke up six days later, screaming bloody murder. Screams he kept up till he was sedated, only reducing to a whimpering wail the third time they woke him up.
The bottom floor of the house was destroyed, along with everything in it. Our equipment crushed; all evidence of our horrors erased other than the haunted look in Adams’s eyes and the nightmares that still wake me at 3 am. Wild animals tore the leg from an unconscious Jonah, the local police said. We were just idiots holding a seance in a house, leaving the backdoor open to all manner of wild animals as we partied ourselves silly. At first, they thought we trashed the house, but the Whistlebys assured the police that no, it simply wasn’t the case. This had happened before, they told them, we were just caught in the crossfire. They gave their statement that night, protested our innocence, then packed their bags.
They never left.
Their little girl went missing that night, right before they could flee. Her suitcase sat in her room, untouched, and that house became a sad legend on those streets, spoken about in hushed tones. I left town but something inside it never left me. We don’t speak of it, the three of us. We left, and when we meet, that night exists as the elephant in the room, Jonah’s scarred stump reminding us that we didn’t imagine the entire thing as a collective fever dream.
So I left, lived my life. Started going to church, took up cricket. And when I hear the sound of thudding footsteps hammering along the ceiling of my hallway in the dead of night, I pull the covers over my head and pray to every god that may or may not exist that I’ll live another day. It takes such a long time to pick up all 104 crucifixes off the floor the next morning, but for the life of me, I’ll never stop doing it.
