I’ve never been more confused about who I want to draft. It’s changing on a daily basis almost, and sometimes more than once per day. There’s no clear tiers beyond Sarr, and there’s no perfect prospect.
Considering there are so many possibilities with this pick, including trading it, I wanted to organize my thoughts, then I figured I’d share it with you all.
These are the top 10 most considered prospects as far as I can tell from the chatter on Reddit and Twitter. These are in NO PARTICULAR ORDER.
Reed Sheppard (Combo Guard)
- Why he’s a Rocket He's the "Advanced Stats Darling" of the draft class, and addresses what is currently Houston's biggest need (shooting). Nice hands on defense. Showed out at the combine with "sneaky athleticism". Smart player and good passer.
- Why he’s NOT a Rocket He's undersized, at 6'2" with a 6'3" wingspan, weighing-in at 182 lbs. Despite being a bit of a menace in passing lanes, he gets blown by on-ball & will be targeted by opposing offenses. He only took 4.4 3PA per game in college, which is quite low for a 58% shooter. Will he be able to get his shot off in the league?
Stephon Castle (Guard/Wing Hybrid)
- Why he’s a Rocket Castle is a winning player with outstanding size & length for his position, boasting a 6'9" wingspan. He's the best POA defender in the class. Ime loves switchable players.
- Why he’s NOT a Rocket Wasn't much of a shooter in college, despite having excelled in the 3pt shooting drills at the combine. Unless we're confident he can develop a respectable shot, how do you add another non-shooter to this team?
Nikola Topic (Lead Guard)
- Why he’s a Rocket For one, his name is Nikola… Other than that, he's a 6'6" legitimate PG who has contributed to winning in Serbia at only 18 years old. He's a great finisher at the rim with elite body control and a talented playmaker who excels in the P&R.
- Why he’s NOT a Rocket He's not a shooter, and it's not certain what he could offer in an off-ball role. Houston would have to be committed to his role as a lead ball handler enough to relegate Amen to the wing, and it seems too early to give up on him developing a viable handle. Topic also has a knee injury history and is currently injured, so he may be difficult to evaluate.
Rob Dillingham (Lead Guard)
- Why he’s a Rocket He's twitchy and athletic with great handles, is probably the best playmaker in the class, and his footwork is otherworldly. Good finisher at the rim, even finishing through contact despite his size. Very good shooter with a lightning-fast release.
- Why he’s NOT a Rocket If Reed is undersized, so is Rob but arguably even more. Defense is questionable at best. Can be a bit erratic and has a tendency of overdribbling. Does his skillset overlap too much with Jalen Green? How many athletic guards does a team actually need?
Alex Sarr (Center)
- Why he’s a Rocket Size, length, mobility, rim protection, shooting upside - what more could you want from a prospect? He could play behind or beside Sengun. Great fit and probably the best prospect in the draft period.
- Why he’s NOT a Rocket He probably won't be available at 3, and it may not be worth trading assets to move up for yet another raw young player, despite the fit & ceiling.
Donovan Clingan (Center)
- Why he’s a Rocket A two-time NCAA champion, Clingan is a beast of a human standing 7'2" and 282 lbs with a 7'7" wingspan and a standing reach of 9'7". Maybe the best interior defender to come out of college in years, he could be the perfect yin to Sengun's yang, coming off the bench to take away the paint from opposing offenses.
- Why he’s NOT a Rocket Using a #3 pick to draft a backup to the team's best player could be considered a misuse of the asset. Houston is already fairly deep at center, with Steven Adams, Jock Landale, and both Jabari and Jeff for small-ball lineups. Having another floor spacer could be helpful, especially one with a pro comp like MPJ. He plays in a Euro league, so he's faced tougher competition than any of the guys in college have.

A late bloomer, Knecht's journey started in JUCO before going to a mid-major and then dominating the SEC his senior year.

All right - I’ve been wallowing in DIY hell for a while, trying to figure out from asking questions here and there, and researching old threads, how to design my optimal bed. I read this very helpful thread and much of the linked content, but I', still struggling. Maybe I’m going about this all wrong: how about if I tell all you vets what I’ve got going on, and ask all of YOU to help me out with design ideas?! Aaaaannnd GO!
I’m 6’0, 160lbs in my 40’s. I am a 75/25 back/side sleeper; I fall asleep on my back, but some time around morning I roll onto my side for a bit.
I have chronic/recurring lower back pain, which is aggravated by … you guessed it … sleeping on a bad / worn out mattress. For the past 6 years I had a spring + foam pillow top Beautyrest and it was fine, but I started having daily back pain every morning. When I noticed the pain went away whenever I slept anywhere other than my house … right.
This is the biggest thing for me: I need a mattress that will be kind to my lower back.
I’m currently using my guest mattress, which is a Novilla Bliss cheapy all-foam deal, but honestly my back is fine on it (at least for the past few weeks). But who knows what junky materials are in that, and I’m sure after a little time the cheap materials will sag / wear out. I want to DIY something that will last forever (or at least a good long time).
Last point - I have some acid reflux issues and often have to use a high density foam wedge under my mattress so the head-end is elevated 4-5 inches — idk if that informs material selection (particularly as to coils vs foam support layer).
Given those criteria: build me a mattress! I'd love suggestions for what kind of base and/or comfort layers will work best for me, and why. Coils vs all foam, Talalay vs Dunlop, latex vs memory — have it out! I'll take individual suggestions or complete suggested builds. I appreciate all comments and your time.

I have vague memories of a Nintendo DS game akin to the Professor Layton games.
It was set in a somewhat historical town, maybe early 19th century? It was a mystery/puzzle solving/point and click adventure. The environment was shown throughout a top down view.
I believe most if not all of the NPCs had big black eyes and pale, wrinkly faces, I'm pretty sure this creepy look was a plot point of some sort, like the town was infected?
The art style was quite cartoony, big heads and small bodies to fit in with the top down perspective. I'm thinking Petscope, something visually close to that.
I remember a specific point where I got stuck, it's certainly very close to the beginning of the game because I was quite young: there's a room with a bed on the lower side of the space, on the bed there's a pillow and by interacting with it you could obtain some object to go further, like a key or something like that. I think the pillow had a little animation of it flipping over? I can't be sure.
Does anyone have any idea of what I'm talking about? I'd say the year is 2010 or earlier. I've tried to look it up but I can't find anything.

Hi! I’m a 35 year old mom of a 16 yr old lesbian daughter. We’re very supportive. Not religious or anything. Very liberal. But I’m struggling (not sure if that’s the right way to describe it but still) to understand some of the things she posts online. She will comment or like and save a lot of lesbian TikToks about sexual and style terms. Chapstick lesbian, pillow princess, masqu/femme. I understand the idea that she’s trying to figure out who she is, but my issue I guess is why she (and other young girls like her) feels the need to label herself with so much? It feels unhealthy in a way to identify with a sexual stereotype (like stone top) when she’s never had sex and hasn’t really lived enough of her life to know for sure that it’s a label she really identifies with. Her girlfriend prefers “masque”girls but my daughter has a more neutral style, earthy. Will dress girly or more masculine depending on what she’s doing. Which is how I dress as well. He took the glass from me readily. We had been making this a nightly tradition after all, ever since his tooth started wiggling. Forgoing liquids after dinner helps him drink it; for anyone in a similar predicament and seeking advice.
I watched as he finished most of it, except for a half rimmed grin at the bottom. Smiled and kissed him goodnight. He was out before the lights were, allowing me to linger in the doorway for a second before going back to my own room.
I tossed and turned at first. Getting up many times to check on him. Not once did he stir. So by the time that I did fall asleep - it was because I had exhausted myself. I blame that as the reason why I didn't hear the noise in the other room right away.
Faint whispers at first, scratching in my ear canal. Turned to horror when I realized what was happening. My heart jumped into my throat as I heard an uncanny scratchy tone coming from Timmy's room that couldn't have been his. And the distinct words that sounded like it had been fed through a hundred, perhaps a thousand languages before it was spoken, "Would you like a kiss?"
I bolted upright and burst into his room.
But it was too late.
When I got there, the window was wide open. The lamp next to his bed glowed quietly. And no one else was there except my son Timmy who was sitting on his bed with a great big smile on his face.
Even from here I could tell. That something was wrong. It was more than just the lost tooth that had grown back. It was the four or five other ones I could see, starting to push their way through the tops of his gums, filling his mouth with other kid's teeth - that made my stomach churn.
There was no point in scaring him. Not at the rate the teeth were growing. Not when I saw him yawn, revealing the rows and rows of their ivory little ends spiraling down his throat.
So I mixed another drink. Stronger this time. And had him take every last drop.
Kissing him softly on the head as I put him back to sleep.

I moved to the Netherlands two years ago and previously lived in Poland where city heating is the most comfortable and cheapest option. I'm buying a house in Almere and it seems most of the houses are connected to city heating. At first, I thought this was great, but then I've seen what people pay for the city heating and investigated how the prices are calculated. Seems like it's very different from what I'm used to.
I've checked my yearly gas usage in a house I'm renting Den Haag - for 2023 it was 756 m3 (1235,72 euro including all costs and taxes). From that, I calculated how many GJ I would use and rounded it up to 20GJ. I've used the calculator on vattenfall.nl and it showed me I would pay 1727,58 euros per year which is almost 500 more than the gas. Almost half of that is just the fixed costs that do not change no matter if I use the heat or not. Then I checked how much it would cost me to heat the house and the water with a resistance-based boiler (the least efficient one). Converted it to electricity 5424kWh and the calculator on vattenfall.nl showed me it would cost me 1548 euros to heat the house this way. It's more expensive than what I'm currently paying for gas, but still cheaper than city heating. Now let's check the heat pump - I just took a random one from Marktplaats that should be 3x to 4x more efficient than the resistance-based boiler (the efficiency changes based on the temperature outside). I will calculate the worst-case scenario, so 5424kWh / 3 = 1808kWh. The calculator says it will cost me 442 euros per year.
To sum it up everything else (heating with gas, electricity, or heat pump) is cheaper than city heating. If I buy a mid-range heat pump it will cost me around 5000 euros and I will get that money back in around 4 years. On top of that, the house that I'm buying has already enough sun panels to offset most of those 442 euros for the heat pump anyway.
So is it possible to disconnect the house from city heating? Should I just call the Vattenfall before moving in and tell them I don't want to sign the contract?

As a person with disabilities, making ends meet is extremely difficult. Getting a job is difficult for everyone, moreso for us. Getting accomodations is like pulling teeth. And keeping a job? Let's just say we never get too comfortable, because employers view you negatively if you can ever give anything less than 100%, 100% of the time.
For the last decade, disability payments to those living with relatives have sat at 169$ twice a month. This is all we get. The grand total. We do not get anything additional. This is not on top of a shelter allowance. This is *all* we get.
Today I found out they stealth increased this to 280$ twice a month, starting tomorrow. I thought this was an error at first so I called the income support line and - apparently I wasn't the first person asking this question today.
It's not a lot. It really isn't. It'll still barely make ends meet. But it's something. It's enough that I won't have to choose between soap and food. I won't have to debate on whether I can afford to treat myself to a single mango. I've desperately needed to replace my pillow for almost a year now - it's 7 years old and definitely unhygeinic and contributing to my sicknesses, but I need a memory foam pillow and those are expensive. Now I can.
And honestly? I'm happy for anything right about now.
TLDR if you're a disabled person on income support the letter you got isn't an error they actually did increase it.

So the 87 535is I acquired recently has an issue with the clutch. The clutch would only engage if you were pressing it hard into the carpet. So I began with the slave cylinder, trying to bleed it no fluid would come out so i replaced the Slave cylinder. Upon bleeding the system with the new slave I realized the master was leaking. So I replaced that along with all the hoses from the reservoir to the slave. I followed the Bentley steps for bleeding with the motive pressure bleeder and a YouTube video I found that showed bleeding the system with the slave in your hand opening and closing the bleeder screw as you press and release the piston respectively. I got a little more out of the clutch and was able to drive it around town but after every shift I would have to use the top of my foot to get the clutch to come up all the way from where it natural would stop at about 75% return travel. If I didn’t do this I would not be able to shift to another gear. I gave up and brought it to my mechanic. He has it up on the lift and tried bleeding it. He says he got a little more out of the clutch but it still engages toward the floor. He’s leaning toward it needing a new clutch kit. I’m not opposed to it as it might be the original clutch and even though the odometer has stopped at 162000 it could be many more. What’s your thoughts? If I do move forward with the clutch is the Sachs kit from fcp Euro what I should go with? While the clutch is being replaced is there anything else that should be addressed at that time? Mechanic mentioned flywheel as well. Thanks in advance!

Molly is a crotchety old hag who growls all the time, and always has been, she likes her space. Normally this works out, my 2 dogs growl at her exuberance, she becomes more exuberant, and everyone walks away without fighting. Threw nights ago was different, my boyfriend had to physically separate them and we held them back from each other. I'm holding Darla, eyes locked with my boyfriend in a "wtf just happened" moment, when my cat Gary runs up. Gary's kind of a, we'll he's an orange cat, but he jumps onto the bed and starts aggressively hissing and attacking Darla! I've never seen him fight with any of the animals, I've seen him bap the dogs when they're not looking and then take off running like ding dong ditch, but ive never seen him so mean. I think Gary was defending Molly....but Molly never let's Gary near him, it's just so weird I kind of laughed bc wtf???? Wilson (11 y.o Great Dane) just got out of the way and layed down. The next day Darla growls when she sees Molly and won't let Gary jump up on the bed if he tries getting up near her. Gary came around to my side of the bed and then my cat Sophia tried to come up and Gary chased her off hissing too 😭😭😭😭. Normally my danes spoon like yin amd yang and she growled at him too but mostly got over it and let him next to her. Yesterday my boyfriend said she was shaking and being weird. I got home and she is laser focused on the other animals movements and shakes and tries to chase them off if they come near. I was up all night because she was laying on top of me and growling or lunging at all the animals. If you're still here, I will say she is not Spayed, she is only 1.5 years old. My other 2 dogs and 2 cats are all fixed. She just went through her second heat cycle 3 months ago, and she's always velcro attached to me or my bf, mostly me, and super affectionate. She had started laying directly on my pillow recently and takes a toy with her everywhere now, but even then she always grabbed a toy when she was happy. She growls at us to go outside, or at the vacuum cleaner. Other than that shes never understood the concept of space or other animals or people not wanting her on top of them, shes always just so goofy friendly.... I've only seen her angry when I try to move her on the bed.... WHAT IS HAPPENING -Adult female hormones? -False pregnancy 3 months after her heat cycle? -Finally grew a spine? -Just a normal spat amongst pets? She is not spayed because I was thinking of getting into showing and potentially down the line breeding Great Danes. I love the breed, I would love to be apart of the breed solution, not the problem, and make beautiful perfect healthy dogs, so I paid a bunch for the right papers knowing I had at least 2 years to continue researching and showing and decide. Spoiler alert, I did not show her. I have also done a LOT of research on breeding, and out every thought and considerstion into what i could bring to the breed standard, and I have decided not to breed her. After all my research though I may have become against spay😬😬😬. Taking her reproductive organs while she sleeps doesn't sit right anymore, but now I'm worried this incident happened because I didn't pay vet to remove her parts like a thief in the night. We don't leave her outside alone when she's in heat and we have the other 2 with her when she goes out! No accidentally pregnancies here, Molly is not dog friendly ( unless you're pack,) The change happened so suddenly what do I do? How do I make them all OK with each other again? Can I leave them alone even or do I have to worry about them home alone with each other? Won't separating them make it worse? Or is it really all down to mutilating my damm dog 😭, and if so will it even help or is she permanently emotionally scarred? |

I checked out their bra size guide and according to that I should be 30D/32C which is quite different to my size in the european brands. I'm hoping that some of you could help out since Natori is US based and I'm in the EU. So return would be a bit cumbersome and I'd like to minimise the possibility.

I have shallow breasts, which left is bigger than the right slightly. As generally advised, balconette/demi style fits best. Triangle generally fits great on me, too.

I'm really grateful that I got into all the programs I did! I really wanted to attend CBYX (my dream program) but I unfortunately couldn't because I would have to repeat a year of high school, which I did not want to do.
I almost attended HSHSP, but declined the offer because I got the opportunity to conduct research at a T10 around the same time! I was conflicted between doing a program vs just doing my own thing, but I was really excited by the research I would be able to pursue at the T10 so I chose that instead!
I wish I wasn't so scared about getting into a program when I first started applying. For some reason, I really thought it was my make or break, but looking back on it, there are so many things someone can do over the summer besides a summer program. I defo don't regret applying to so many though, I just wish I was less worried.

I'll be using both metric and imperial measurements in this post, because I'm an American who now lives in Europe and measures everything in both units 😅)
I started my weight loss journey in March of 2023, when I (5'2" or 157cm F) weighed 330.7 pounds, or in other words, topped out my metric-measuring scale at 150kg. As of yesterday, I have lost about 104lbs/47kg. That means it is DEFINITELY time for me to get some new clothes! All of my old shirts look like tents on me, and when I went to try on my shorts from last summer, they literally fell right on down. I'm not going to lie, it is an AMAZING feeling! Watching my shirts turn into dresses has become one of my favourite things. The issue arises when I come to the decision that I need to replace these old items only to slam into the realisation that, yeah, I lost a ton of weight - almost a third of my starting weight - but I'm still fat. I'm still nearly twice the weight I should be. That makes it HARD to find clothes that fit me in normal stores.
Because I carry a lot of my weight in my lower stomach/hips, all of the XXL shirts I find (which is the largest size I can find most of the time) fit me pretty well and even appear roomy until I sit down, at which point they roll up over my stomach. When I find a pair of pants that fit around my waist, they're snug against my lower stomach, making it look like I'm stuffing a pillow into them. I hate it. I just want clothes that fit me. I've worked so hard over the past 14 months. I just want to feel pretty. But it drives me crazy that even with how far I've come, I'm still not going to be comfortable in my clothes.... When I buy them, they're going to fit perfectly in most places but be tight around my lower stomach, and in a few months they'll fit comfortably around my lower stomach but be too big everywhere else. It seems wasteful. It's maddening. I've come so far but I'm still a long way from "normal".
Anyway, my partner is taking me shopping tonight once he finishes work because he says I absolutely NEED new clothes, and he's not wrong. Even two pairs of pants and a nicer shirt I can go out in would be enough for now. I just hope I can find something. I'm so anxious about making a fool of myself. Wish me luck?

 | Heyya! submitted by Zerr07 to trans [link] [comments] Its me again, with some updates! I am still writing story of my trip with some tips and suggestions but as of now just posting an update. Its been hard 2 months for me but overall everything is getting better day by day. At this point I am back to being fully functional, I can walk for a long distances or sit for a long periods of time (work meh). I even moved to a new apartment last week😅 So regarding healing itself...Its been a rough time to be honest. Dilation sucks! I didn't size up as of now, using smallest dilator. I consulted with surgeon and he said its ok as the main thing is to keep the depth and heal properly. I am aware that it will be harder to stretch later but as of now its too painful. Some days I can insert Size 2 dilator with no issues but few days later it seems impossible. Also lube...why is it so expensive?! Seriously, in my region its really hard to find good lube for reasonable price. Currently use Yes OB lube mixed with some water based on top but damn its 20 euros per tube. Sensations are great. even though I experience discomfort and pain pretty much everyday, I haven't felt dysphoric during this period. Swelling is a lot less at this point but still quite noticeable. Numbness is also almost gone and sensitivity is going back to normal (though sometimes parts are still oversensitive). Interesting thing is that my IBS seems to be gone, I was not constipated since surgery. Seems like my IBS was triggered by dysphoria lol. So all in all I feel great and optimistic even though recovery takes a lot of time and patience. Thank you all for support🥰🥰 |

Back on the job, my eyes kept going to the camera that was on enclosure one. Andrew told me its real name, but I think that’d be a step too far, putting that out on the internet. I’d just stick with ‘Steve the bear’. Whatever it was, I just knew I’d have a nightmare about it eventually. Last night I slept fitfully but okay. But I know my brain, and I’d already had a nightmare about Yui stabbing me with one of her legs (they are not needle-sharp in real life, this was dream logic) and walking around, having not noticed I was a Ripley-kebab on her leg. I kept trying to get her attention but for some reason I’d been worried about sounding rude.
On my third walk around the zoo, at about 12 a.m. I saw Leila again, who I’d been noticing more and more often. She never looked interested in talking, only walking through the enclosures, and by that I meant any and all of them. She didn’t seem to have a favorite. I assume that however much of her mind that was left over from being alive still gravitated toward looking at the animals, since getting too close was what killed her in the first place.
Then, in enclosure eight, I saw a new creature and stopped abruptly. This one looked chill, but I wasn’t about to make any assumptions. It looked unique in a strange way, shaped like a giant lizard but built like a big cat of some sort. It had an uncanny valley human face, green hair for a mane, and also a horn like a unicorn. It felt like something drawn by an imaginative five-year-old brought to life, but was still somehow oddly endearing.
“Hello,” she spoke, noticing me noticing her. Her voice was distinctly female and oddly deep.
“Hello,” I responded with false cheer.
She pushed herself to her feet and I took an instinctive step back, but she didn't seem to notice, much less take offense. “You’re the guard here?”
“Yup. That’s me.”
“Thank you.”
I blinked, taken aback. “Ah…you’re welcome. For what?”
She cocked her head. “For guarding me.”
That was different. Most of the impressions I had gotten from the animals so far were that they wanted to eat me. And the idea that this one was thankful for me doing my job was refreshing, don’t get me wrong, but made me wary. Call me a cynic, I guess.
“My name is tàiyang. You can call me Sun,” she told me.
“Hi, Sun. I’m Ripley.”
Then she looked toward the sky. “It’s going to rain tonight.”
After a thoughtful moment, I asked, “Does that make you sad?”
“Why would it make you sad?”
I smiled. “Because your name is Sun.”
She paused and then said, “I don’t understand.”
Honestly, I wasn’t sure what I was expecting, telling a pun to one of the animals. “Never mind.” I glanced up at the sky. “I thought the rain is supposed to stay away from here. Are the ones who told me that wrong?”
“Yes.”
“Well that’s good to know,” I murmured to myself, thinking of my raincoat hanging in the security office closet. It wasn’t that surprising, honestly. Sometimes I felt like the meteorologists in Arkansas try to read the entrails of goats to figure out the weather. It’s all a mess and it’s all made up.
At that, the animal looked to the sky and fell silent. She appeared to be the most uneventful introduction I’d had so far, and I was incredibly grateful for it. Except then the animal kept talking. “He’s under a spell.”
I blinked. “What?”
She looked back to me. “Andrew. He’s under a spell. He’s very unhappy.”
I had no idea how to react to that. For a second I just stared. The sudden jolt of being told my boss was currently being afflicted by magic left me floundering. “He… What?” I finally asked. “Where is he?”
“In his office.”
Oh shit. My eyes instinctively darted in the direction of the main office. I always just entered through the door on the west side of the building, of course, since it led to the security room. It was unnecessary for me to go through the door that first led into the lobby-slash-office Andrew worked out of. Sometimes he even left early, so it was locked anyway. I had the key, but again, it was unnecessary.
Whatever had happened, assuming this animal wasn’t joking around (she seemed completely serious), I needed to establish whether she was right. Leaving the enclosure of the animal I’d just met, I quickly walked back to the small building.
Taking a deep breath, I knocked loudly. “Andrew, are you in there?”
The only reply was silence. I stood there until enough time had passed that it was obvious that no one was coming to answer the door. Taking out my phone, I dialed his cell number and wait as it rang. Then I grimaced when I heard it ringing inside.
Hanging up and shoving the phone back in my pocket, I stared at the closed door.
Trying the doorknob, I found that it was unlocked, and my heart skipped a beat. Andrew always locked his office before leaving. Opening the door slowly, the lights were off in the room, leaving only the faint red glow of the lights outside peeking around his curtains, so I turned on a light. Then my heart plummeted into my stomach, because there was Andrew, splayed limply on the ground, his eyes only half open.
I bolted to him and dropped to his side as he let out a whimper.
“Andrew,” I said, putting two fingers to the side of his neck. He remained silent, and despite his relaxed, wilted appearance, his heart was racing, and I wondered if he was in pain. The room smelled, and it was clear to me that he’d lost control of his bowels. I couldn’t believe I’d been working here for hours without knowing he was in the next room like this.
“Fucking hell. I’m so sorry it took me so long to find you. Can you hear me? What happened?” He made a small sound, unfocused eyes attempting to meet mine, but it was as if he were severely deprived of sleep or something, unable to focus. His mouth opened and he tried to say something, but he couldn’t speak. All I got was halting words mushed into each other. I felt for him; he must’ve been mortified by his condition. I would’ve been, at least.
The obvious solution would be to get Suzanne’s number from Andrew’s phone, so I searched him for it and found it in his right jacket pocket. I pressed the button the iPhone, swiped, and let out a sigh of frustration. He was security conscious enough to lock his phone with a code, of course.
“Can you… You can’t tell me the code,” I said knowing. He grunted quietly.
“What happened?”
I shrieked and jumped to my feet. Leila stood in the doorway, staring in shock at Andrew’s body. “You scared the bejesus out of me,” I exclaimed. I stopped myself before asking if she could make some noise when she moved or if I could put a bell on her. “What does it look like happened? Someone put a spell on him.” Abruptly, my stance changed, standing up straight. “Wait. Do you know how to get in touch with…anyone?” I asked desperately.
“I know Ms. Cooper’s phone number,” she said frankly.
My eyes widened. “Seriously? How?”
“Andrew gave it to me after I worked here for three months.”
That stopped my brain dead in its tracks. “You…used to work here?” I whispered. I remembered Andrew telling me that one of the night shift managers had been killed, but he hadn’t told me it was Leila. Whether it was for her own privacy or her dignity or some other reason, it didn’t really matter. What mattered was that I could call Suzanne.
“I worked here for three months,” Leila confirmed as I took out my own phone.
“Okay…what’s her number?” I asked, ready to dial. She rattled off the number and dialed it.
The phone rang twice times before someone answered. “Hello?”
“Hi, is this Suzanne?”
“Yes, who’s this?”
She had a British accent like Andrew did. I took a deep breath and said, “It’s Ripley Mason. I got your number from Leila. I’m here in Andrew’s office and he’s in really bad shape. Someone cast a spell on him and it’s like he’s lost control of the part of his brain that lets him move around and speak.”
“What?” she snapped. “What happened?”
“I-I don’t know,” I said, glancing back to Andrew. He actually looked calmer now, and I hoped that was because he knew Suzanne could fix this. “I was doing my rounds and I met Sun; she’s the one that told me and that’s why I came into his office. I don’t- Who would do this? What do I do?”
“It’s okay, Ripley. I’ll leaving now and will be there soon,” she told me. I heard rustling in the background, the sounds of getting out of a chair and footsteps. “Did you check the security cameras?”
My eyes shut in irritation against my stupidity. It hadn’t even occurred to me. “I’m sorry. Of course, I’ll do that right away.” Proof positive that I was completely out of it. Some security guard I was, not even able to keep my head in an emergency.
“Don’t apologize, Ripley, you’re quite within your rights to be discombobulated at the moment,” she said. “And I’d like you stay with Andrew, but I would prefer to know what happened. Leave his side just for a second to check the footage.
“Okay.” I crouched down to him, putting a hand on his shoulder. “I’ll be right back.” His eyes flicked to me, but he didn’t make a sound. Getting back to my feet and walking over to the security room door, I went in and sat at my desk, putting the phone on speaker so I could more easily navigate the footage.
After fidgeting around with the unfamiliar aspect of the program, since I’d never needed to look back before and Andrew only showed me how to do it once, I finally went back to the point where the spell had been cast. “Okay, he walked into his office with two men at…4:08 p.m. and it looks like he was fine with it. He wasn’t under duress, from what I can see.”
“That’s likely Michael Wise and Eric Henry,” Suzanne told me. “They were allegedly making a donation, a herd of Bagot goats.”
“Allegedly?”
“Well, I’m operating under the assumption that they lied if Andrew is spelled.”
I grimaced. That was a good point. Watching them have a conversation, I saw Andrew tense, and then turn to dart toward his desk, but he only made it two steps before one of the men raised what looked like a wand, snapping it in my late boss’s direction, speaking something. As I saw Andrew’s body seize like he’d been hit with a taser and collapse, I hissed in a sharp breath. “Cripes.”
“What is it?”
“One of them had a wand,” I managed. “He-He did something with it.”
“I’m here, Ripley. Come back to the office.”
My eyes widened and I did as I was told, stunned to see her opening the front door. “How did you get here so fast?” I asked.
The woman gave me a small smile, rendered grim by the situation. “Call it a trick of the trade.”
“Oh. Gotcha.”
Suzanne was all hard edges, her pin-straight blond hair cut at an angle just below her ears, and she wore a smart blue pants suit with matching pumps. But then she looked to Andrew and her face softened, despair and fury flashing across it as she quickly walked to him and knelt at his side, taking his weak hand in hers.
“Oh, Andrew,” she whispered. “I’m so, so sorry. You’ll be okay. I already texted a healer and asked her to come by. A friend of mine named Janine.”
I looked back to Andrew’s face, his eyes open and his expression one of exhaustion, but then quickly looked to Suzanne. “Why would someone do this?” I asked.
“I have a feeling at least one of our animals is missing,” she told me, her voice low and hard.
Anger flared up in me. “What?” I asked tersely. I glanced back in the direction of the cameras. “Should we check the cameras to see which enclosure they went to? Do we- Are there cops you can call for this? What do we do?”
Suzanne’s face slowly faded to sadness. “I’ll take care of it,” she said. “You’re accurate in that I do have a different police I’ll call about this. But there’s a good chance we won’t get the animal back.”
“Wait, why? Come on, there’s got to be magic you could do, right?” I asked anxiously.
“The animal will have been warded and sold to someone immediately,” she explained. “They would’ve had a buyer set up, and gone straight there to reduce the risk of being caught with it. Anyone who is buying an animal like this is extremely powerful, which means that even if we catch the men who stole it, they’d go to prison, but they wouldn’t risk angering the buyer. They won’t tell the authorities who it was, even for a lesser sentence. Losing an animal to robbery has only happened twice in the zoo’s history, this is the third time, but that’s how it played out both times. Actually, in the first instance, the police didn’t even catch the people who took it, since they were wearing masks.”
Just then, there was a knock at the door, and Suzanne pushed herself to her feet, walking over and opening it without hesitation. “He’s in here.” I took the opportunity to open the windows and turned down the thermostat so it would start displacing the smelly air.
A woman walked in, Janine presumably. “Oh, goodness,” she breathed, going quickly to Andrew. She took his pulse with one hand as she pulled a wand out from her purse with the other. “It’s good he’s staying calm. Redire orior can be terrifying to be subjected to.”
“He wasn’t calm when I got here,” I told her quietly. “I’ve been here for hours and didn’t know he was here until just a few minutes ago.”
Janine swore softly. “All right. Let me get started.”
I didn’t know what that meant, so I turned to Suzanne. “What did she call this?”

I grimaced, looking back to him. “Oh my god,” I whispered. It meant exactly what it had looked like when I’d walked in: Andrew had been rendered completely helpless. Rage welled up inside me, despising the men who’d done this and wishing desperately that Suzanne had been more confident in finding them.
Suzanne took the opportunity to walk into the security office and I heard her sit in my chair. Janine put down her wand to have both hands free and told Andrew, “Just relax, concentrate on breathing slowly,” she said, carefully pulling both of his legs out and rolling him onto his back. She then put his arms at his sides and, picking up her wand, pointed it at his forehead.
I took in a sharp breath of surprise as I saw a faint glow coming from the wand, through the top of it and then to Andrew’s forehead. She held that position for a while, muttering under her breath.
A few minutes later, Suzanne came out and took her phone from her pocket, saying, “I don’t recognize either of the men in the footage. But they seemed distressed, particularly the one that didn’t hurt Andrew. I don’t think that’s what was meant to happen.”
“Meant to or not, it happened,” I muttered through clenched teeth. I’d already decided that my new to-do list every day included first checking the office cameras.
“Andrew,” Janine said, letting the glow fade. “Can you speak?”
“I…yeah,” he whispered.
Suzanne came over to my side. “Thank goodness. How are you feeling? How’s the vertigo?”
“Pretty much gone,” he said, closing his eyes for a long moment, though he didn’t try to stand up.
“Andrew, I pulled up the cameras in the office and listened to the audio,” she told him. “I know what happened.”
My eyebrows furrowed. “The cameras have audio?”
“It’s under admin privileges, but yes. Andrew, you should have known better,” she said softly, looking back to him. “The gun in one of the desk drawers? I presume that’s what you were lunging for, because those two men had just made it clear they were here for an animal.”
“Yeah,” he sighed. “I just…” He looked distraught.
“They told you to just let them get what they came for,” Suzanne said. “Why didn’t you?” My lips parted in shock.
“The last time this happened, I cooperated, but…I regretted it,” he growled. “We never saw Harriet again. I couldn’t just stand here and let them do whatever they wanted. Not again.” I assumed Harriet was one of their animals, but I didn’t ask.
“Don’t ever do something so foolish again,” she told him, on the verge of being upset, her emotions likely tempered by his condition. “I want to make it clear to you that this job, these animals, they’re immensely important, but they are not worth your life. He could have killed you. If someone gains access to the zoo again to steal an animal I want you to cooperate fully. Understood?”
“Yeah,” Andrew muttered.
The idea that Andrew had tried to bring a gun to a wand fight was staggering. Something heavy curled in my stomach at the thought. It was clear he cared about the wellbeing of the animals to a degree I hadn’t comprehended.
Janine took one of the small pillows from the couch and tucked it under Andrew’s head as Suzanne continued. “All right,” she said with a sigh. “I’ll go through the footage to determine what they stole and then call the authorities to report the theft. Janine, can you continue to treat him?”
I wasn’t sure what that entailed, but Janine apparently did, since she nodded and knelt back down as Suzanne went back into the security office. Janine did the same thing that she’d done before, that soft glow channeling light into Andrew’s head. Obviously, I wanted to ask what she was doing, but I knew better than to think I’d get an answer. Instead, I sat in one of the loveseats in front of Andrew’s desk, turning it to face them.
I heard Suzanne’s voice faintly speaking to someone on the phone and the minutes ticked by. Eventually, Suzanne came back out again and she stood next to me for a long moment, watching the healing process before turning to me.
“Andrew told me you were attempting to create some enrichment activities for the animals?” asked my boss.
“Oh, uh…yeah, I am,” I answered. I assumed she was trying to make small talk to distract me from the current situation, and I appreciated it. “The first one went well. Spike loves artichokes, pecans, and hazelnuts. I went with things that made it a challenge to eat, like it’s a challenge to pull out fingernails of its prey.”
Suzanne’s expression brightened just enough for me to notice. “Ripley, that’s wonderful. Very clever.” She let out a breath. “It’s becoming more and more obvious to me that Andrew chose well in hiring you.” I gave her a small smile. “Listen, I’m going to hire someone else to be here with you on duty,” Suzanne told me, “and by that, I mean someone from my neck of the woods. Andrew explained that to you, correct?”
“Not much. Just that you’re not from Earth.”
Suzanne smiled. “That makes me sound like an alien, but yes, I’m not from this dimension. I can hire someone who has similar abilities to mine, who can check in every few hours, make sure everything’s all right, but generally make themselves scarce unless there’s an emergency. He wouldn’t have been able to do much if he’d already been here, but he’d have known what was going on. Andrew would have received assistance immediately.”
I was curious of what those abilities were, aside from being able to see the animals, but I wasn’t bold enough to ask. Also, I was curious about who this new ‘employee’ would be, but presumably I’d find out sooner or later. “That would make me feel a little better,” I said, nodding. “Knowing there was someone else here.”
She nodded once. “It’s as good as done, then. As for Andrew, he’ll need to take a few days off to recover. Would you be willing to give the tours until he’s back in ship-shape?”
My eyes bugged out of my skull. “Wait, what? I can’t even see all the animals!”
Suzanne chuckled at my expression and shook her head. “I can enchant a pair of specs for you to wear,” she told me. “It’ll give you a bit of a headache, but you’ll be able to see all of the animals. Also, I’ll give you the background for each of them, because you’ll be speaking about them to the tourists.”
I blinked, thinking of how awesome it would be to finally know all about them all. And it was flattering, the fact that she had such confidence in me that, without hesitation, she asked if I could take over for Andrew. The best thing for me to do, of course, was to be confident and assure her that I could take any temporary promotion in stride. “I’m…I’m not great with people,” I managed.
Yup. Nailed it.
“You can be a little harsh with them if you need to,” she said with a small, knowing smile. “I assumed that signing up for a job where you interact with a screen of cameras the whole time means you aren’t great with people. And Andrew did brief me on you when he hired you. How good are you at couching your insults in polite talk? The British are quite skilled, but I know Americans aren’t too bad at it.”
I smirked, remembering how a coworker friend of mine once told a customer, “Oh, bless your heart,” in her thick southern accent and it sounded like the worst insult. “I can manage that, I think.”
A buzz from the gate that went to the panel on the wall drew our attention and Suzanne walked over to let the visitors in. It was three people, a man and two women, with a gurney.
Walking over to Andrew, I folded my arms with a small smile as Janine released his head from the glow the wand was emitting. “Hey. Sorry you had to lay on the floor for so long knowing I was cluelessly reading a book in the next room.”
“Eh, not the end of the world,” he whispered. “I’ll be back on my feet soon. So, no parties while I’m gone.”
I snorted and my smile widened, and he returned it.
Going back into the security room, I pulled the system back to the multi-camera exterior view, and I sat there and listened to Suzanne talk to one of the medics, explaining everything that had happened in detail. Once she’d done that and they brought Andrew outside on the gurney, presumably to a waiting ambulance, I gave my statement, and then…it was back to work.
Obviously going back to work like nothing had changed felt weird, but Suzanne stayed, letting me know that she would get some work done at Andrew’s desk until my shift was over. It was likely the opposite of necessary, the robbers were gone, but it did make me feel a tiny bit better knowing that she was in the next room with her wand.

Back on the job, my eyes kept going to the camera that was on enclosure one. Andrew told me its real name, but I think that’d be a step too far, putting that out on the internet. I’d just stick with ‘Steve the bear’. Whatever it was, I just knew I’d have a nightmare about it eventually. Last night I slept fitfully but okay. But I know my brain, and I’d already had a nightmare about Yui stabbing me with one of her legs (they are not needle-sharp in real life, this was dream logic) and walking around, having not noticed I was a Ripley-kebab on her leg. I kept trying to get her attention but for some reason I’d been worried about sounding rude.
On my third walk around the zoo, at about 12 a.m. I saw Leila again, who I’d been noticing more and more often. She never looked interested in talking, only walking through the enclosures, and by that I meant any and all of them. She didn’t seem to have a favorite. I assume that however much of her mind that was left over from being alive still gravitated toward looking at the animals, since getting too close was what killed her in the first place.
Then, in enclosure eight, I saw a new creature and stopped abruptly. This one looked chill, but I wasn’t about to make any assumptions. It looked unique in a strange way, shaped like a giant lizard but built like a big cat of some sort. It had an uncanny valley human face, green hair for a mane, and also a horn like a unicorn. It felt like something drawn by an imaginative five-year-old brought to life, but was still somehow oddly endearing.
“Hello,” she spoke, noticing me noticing her. Her voice was distinctly female and oddly deep.
“Hello,” I responded with false cheer.
She pushed herself to her feet and I took an instinctive step back, but she didn't seem to notice, much less take offense. “You’re the guard here?”
“Yup. That’s me.”
“Thank you.”
I blinked, taken aback. “Ah…you’re welcome. For what?”
She cocked her head. “For guarding me.”
That was different. Most of the impressions I had gotten from the animals so far were that they wanted to eat me. And the idea that this one was thankful for me doing my job was refreshing, don’t get me wrong, but made me wary. Call me a cynic, I guess.
“My name is tàiyang. You can call me Sun,” she told me.
“Hi, Sun. I’m Ripley.”
Then she looked toward the sky. “It’s going to rain tonight.”
After a thoughtful moment, I asked, “Does that make you sad?”
“Why would it make you sad?”
I smiled. “Because your name is Sun.”
She paused and then said, “I don’t understand.”
Honestly, I wasn’t sure what I was expecting, telling a pun to one of the animals. “Never mind.” I glanced up at the sky. “I thought the rain is supposed to stay away from here. Are the ones who told me that wrong?”
“Yes.”
“Well that’s good to know,” I murmured to myself, thinking of my raincoat hanging in the security office closet. It wasn’t that surprising, honestly. Sometimes I felt like the meteorologists in Arkansas try to read the entrails of goats to figure out the weather. It’s all a mess and it’s all made up.
At that, the animal looked to the sky and fell silent. She appeared to be the most uneventful introduction I’d had so far, and I was incredibly grateful for it. Except then the animal kept talking. “He’s under a spell.”
I blinked. “What?”
She looked back to me. “Andrew. He’s under a spell. He’s very unhappy.”
I had no idea how to react to that. For a second I just stared. The sudden jolt of being told my boss was currently being afflicted by magic left me floundering. “He… What?” I finally asked. “Where is he?”
“In his office.”
Oh shit. My eyes instinctively darted in the direction of the main office. I always just entered through the door on the west side of the building, of course, since it led to the security room. It was unnecessary for me to go through the door that first led into the lobby-slash-office Andrew worked out of. Sometimes he even left early, so it was locked anyway. I had the key, but again, it was unnecessary.
Whatever had happened, assuming this animal wasn’t joking around (she seemed completely serious), I needed to establish whether she was right. Leaving the enclosure of the animal I’d just met, I quickly walked back to the small building.
Taking a deep breath, I knocked loudly. “Andrew, are you in there?”
The only reply was silence. I stood there until enough time had passed that it was obvious that no one was coming to answer the door. Taking out my phone, I dialed his cell number and wait as it rang. Then I grimaced when I heard it ringing inside.
Hanging up and shoving the phone back in my pocket, I stared at the closed door.
Trying the doorknob, I found that it was unlocked, and my heart skipped a beat. Andrew always locked his office before leaving. Opening the door slowly, the lights were off in the room, leaving only the faint red glow of the lights outside peeking around his curtains, so I turned on a light. Then my heart plummeted into my stomach, because there was Andrew, splayed limply on the ground, his eyes only half open.
I bolted to him and dropped to his side as he let out a whimper.
“Andrew,” I said, putting two fingers to the side of his neck. He remained silent, and despite his relaxed, wilted appearance, his heart was racing, and I wondered if he was in pain. The room smelled, and it was clear to me that he’d lost control of his bowels. I couldn’t believe I’d been working here for hours without knowing he was in the next room like this.
“Fucking hell. I’m so sorry it took me so long to find you. Can you hear me? What happened?” He made a small sound, unfocused eyes attempting to meet mine, but it was as if he were severely deprived of sleep or something, unable to focus. His mouth opened and he tried to say something, but he couldn’t speak. All I got was halting words mushed into each other. I felt for him; he must’ve been mortified by his condition. I would’ve been, at least.
The obvious solution would be to get Suzanne’s number from Andrew’s phone, so I searched him for it and found it in his right jacket pocket. I pressed the button the iPhone, swiped, and let out a sigh of frustration. He was security conscious enough to lock his phone with a code, of course.
“Can you… You can’t tell me the code,” I said knowing. He grunted quietly.
“What happened?”
I shrieked and jumped to my feet. Leila stood in the doorway, staring in shock at Andrew’s body. “You scared the bejesus out of me,” I exclaimed. I stopped myself before asking if she could make some noise when she moved or if I could put a bell on her. “What does it look like happened? Someone put a spell on him.” Abruptly, my stance changed, standing up straight. “Wait. Do you know how to get in touch with…anyone?” I asked desperately.
“I know Ms. Cooper’s phone number,” she said frankly.
My eyes widened. “Seriously? How?”
“Andrew gave it to me after I worked here for three months.”
That stopped my brain dead in its tracks. “You…used to work here?” I whispered. I remembered Andrew telling me that one of the night shift managers had been killed, but he hadn’t told me it was Leila. Whether it was for her own privacy or her dignity or some other reason, it didn’t really matter. What mattered was that I could call Suzanne.
“I worked here for three months,” Leila confirmed as I took out my own phone.
“Okay…what’s her number?” I asked, ready to dial. She rattled off the number and dialed it.
The phone rang twice times before someone answered. “Hello?”
“Hi, is this Suzanne?”
“Yes, who’s this?”
She had a British accent like Andrew did. I took a deep breath and said, “It’s Ripley Mason. I got your number from Leila. I’m here in Andrew’s office and he’s in really bad shape. Someone cast a spell on him and it’s like he’s lost control of the part of his brain that lets him move around and speak.”
“What?” she snapped. “What happened?”
“I-I don’t know,” I said, glancing back to Andrew. He actually looked calmer now, and I hoped that was because he knew Suzanne could fix this. “I was doing my rounds and I met Sun; she’s the one that told me and that’s why I came into his office. I don’t- Who would do this? What do I do?”
“It’s okay, Ripley. I’ll leaving now and will be there soon,” she told me. I heard rustling in the background, the sounds of getting out of a chair and footsteps. “Did you check the security cameras?”
My eyes shut in irritation against my stupidity. It hadn’t even occurred to me. “I’m sorry. Of course, I’ll do that right away.” Proof positive that I was completely out of it. Some security guard I was, not even able to keep my head in an emergency.
“Don’t apologize, Ripley, you’re quite within your rights to be discombobulated at the moment,” she said. “And I’d like you stay with Andrew, but I would prefer to know what happened. Leave his side just for a second to check the footage.
“Okay.” I crouched down to him, putting a hand on his shoulder. “I’ll be right back.” His eyes flicked to me, but he didn’t make a sound. Getting back to my feet and walking over to the security room door, I went in and sat at my desk, putting the phone on speaker so I could more easily navigate the footage.
After fidgeting around with the unfamiliar aspect of the program, since I’d never needed to look back before and Andrew only showed me how to do it once, I finally went back to the point where the spell had been cast. “Okay, he walked into his office with two men at…4:08 p.m. and it looks like he was fine with it. He wasn’t under duress, from what I can see.”
“That’s likely Michael Wise and Eric Henry,” Suzanne told me. “They were allegedly making a donation, a herd of Bagot goats.”
“Allegedly?”
“Well, I’m operating under the assumption that they lied if Andrew is spelled.”
I grimaced. That was a good point. Watching them have a conversation, I saw Andrew tense, and then turn to dart toward his desk, but he only made it two steps before one of the men raised what looked like a wand, snapping it in my late boss’s direction, speaking something. As I saw Andrew’s body seize like he’d been hit with a taser and collapse, I hissed in a sharp breath. “Cripes.”
“What is it?”
“One of them had a wand,” I managed. “He-He did something with it.”
“I’m here, Ripley. Come back to the office.”
My eyes widened and I did as I was told, stunned to see her opening the front door. “How did you get here so fast?” I asked.
The woman gave me a small smile, rendered grim by the situation. “Call it a trick of the trade.”
“Oh. Gotcha.”
Suzanne was all hard edges, her pin-straight blond hair cut at an angle just below her ears, and she wore a smart blue pants suit with matching pumps. But then she looked to Andrew and her face softened, despair and fury flashing across it as she quickly walked to him and knelt at his side, taking his weak hand in hers.
“Oh, Andrew,” she whispered. “I’m so, so sorry. You’ll be okay. I already texted a healer and asked her to come by. A friend of mine named Janine.”
I looked back to Andrew’s face, his eyes open and his expression one of exhaustion, but then quickly looked to Suzanne. “Why would someone do this?” I asked.
“I have a feeling at least one of our animals is missing,” she told me, her voice low and hard.
Anger flared up in me. “What?” I asked tersely. I glanced back in the direction of the cameras. “Should we check the cameras to see which enclosure they went to? Do we- Are there cops you can call for this? What do we do?”
Suzanne’s face slowly faded to sadness. “I’ll take care of it,” she said. “You’re accurate in that I do have a different police I’ll call about this. But there’s a good chance we won’t get the animal back.”
“Wait, why? Come on, there’s got to be magic you could do, right?” I asked anxiously.
“The animal will have been warded and sold to someone immediately,” she explained. “They would’ve had a buyer set up, and gone straight there to reduce the risk of being caught with it. Anyone who is buying an animal like this is extremely powerful, which means that even if we catch the men who stole it, they’d go to prison, but they wouldn’t risk angering the buyer. They won’t tell the authorities who it was, even for a lesser sentence. Losing an animal to robbery has only happened twice in the zoo’s history, this is the third time, but that’s how it played out both times. Actually, in the first instance, the police didn’t even catch the people who took it, since they were wearing masks.”
Just then, there was a knock at the door, and Suzanne pushed herself to her feet, walking over and opening it without hesitation. “He’s in here.” I took the opportunity to open the windows and turned down the thermostat so it would start displacing the smelly air.
A woman walked in, Janine presumably. “Oh, goodness,” she breathed, going quickly to Andrew. She took his pulse with one hand as she pulled a wand out from her purse with the other. “It’s good he’s staying calm. Redire orior can be terrifying to be subjected to.”
“He wasn’t calm when I got here,” I told her quietly. “I’ve been here for hours and didn’t know he was here until just a few minutes ago.”

I smirked, remembering how a coworker friend of mine once told a customer, “Oh, bless your heart,” in her thick southern accent and it sounded like the worst insult. “I can manage that, I think.”
A buzz from the gate that went to the panel on the wall drew our attention and Suzanne walked over to let the visitors in. It was three people, a man and two women, with a gurney.
Walking over to Andrew, I folded my arms with a small smile as Janine released his head from the glow the wand was emitting. “Hey. Sorry you had to lay on the floor for so long knowing I was cluelessly reading a book in the next room.”
“Eh, not the end of the world,” he whispered. “I’ll be back on my feet soon. So, no parties while I’m gone.”
I snorted and my smile widened, and he returned it.
Going back into the security room, I pulled the system back to the multi-camera exterior view, and I sat there and listened to Suzanne talk to one of the medics, explaining everything that had happened in detail. Once she’d done that and they brought Andrew outside on the gurney, presumably to a waiting ambulance, I gave my statement, and then…it was back to work.
Obviously going back to work like nothing had changed felt weird, but Suzanne stayed, letting me know that she would get some work done at Andrew’s desk until my shift was over. It was likely the opposite of necessary, the robbers were gone, but it did make me feel a tiny bit better knowing that she was in the next room with her wand.
