So I’m sure with the movie being five years old this has been discussed to death but as I said I just saw it and after a week of heavy drinking and ruminating I want to share my thoughts.
There’s a lot of things on a technical and narrative side I took issue with, which I list below, but I want to start with the larger issue of what makes the movie such a betrayal of the show and what made it a true masterpiece.
The show was always a brutal and unflinching look at life in the waning days of the Wild West, where true justice was rare and humanity was often at its basest. But what Deadwood showed was that despite this brutal reality, some people’s compassion and innate goodness could still shine through. That might not change the larger reality, but it gave people the strength to move forward despite the struggle it took just to get up in the morning.
The movie, on the other hand, exists in some parallel dimension where happy endings exist and good triumphs over bad. Because of this, the movie feels like fan service written by someone who never had anything to do with the original show.
Even from a visual perspective the movie is all wrong. Deadwood was surrounded by beautiful nature, but the town itself was dirty and ramshackle. The Gem looked sticky. It was a place you’d walk into and instantly feel the need to watch your back. In the movie, it looks great, with sun streaming in every window and every surface looking clean and new. A nice place for a family meal.
The characters are now all seemingly happy and confident in their places in society. No one squirms away from EB or belittles Johnny. They’re all one big happy family.
The dialogue awkwardly shoehorns in big words to try to mimic the show’s legendary dialogue without any of the poetic elegance. Instead of being wowed by how beautiful a random utterance was, I just found myself cringing at how stilted and forced much of it sounded.
The movie opens with a CGI train and ends with a street fight that looks equally fake.
EB Farnum is still mayor and still operates a hotel even though he hasn’t owned it for thirteen years.
Bullock is still sheriff despite being voted out at the end of season 3.
Dan is now just some dude in a fancy outfit. Con Stapleton is a pastor?!
Hearst has no edge whatsoever. He’s just a generic rich white guy and therefore the villain. He’s now a senator but still stays at the hotel and issues hits directly to hitmen.
Bullock, despite somehow still being sheriff, does the dirty work of burning Hearst’s lumber despite this being obviously a job for Dan or Johnny.
Utter and Hearst converse as if they’d never met, despite Utter having very harsh words for Hearst in the past. When Hearst has Utter killed, everyone is shocked as if Hearst hasn’t done exactly that before and was literally publicly called out by Trixie for doing so at the beginning of the film (one of the few parts I liked).
The town is suddenly very tolerant. General N——r is now just good ol’ Sam. THEY HAD AN INTER-RELIGIOUSLY TOLERANT WEDDING IN DEADWOOD. This isn’t a small point. The racism in the show was difficult to watch at times, but it’s a part of what made it feel so authentic. When you replace that with more modern sensibility it makes the whole thing feel false.
Aunt Lou is allowed to just hang back in deadwood after Hearst leaves and starts a career as a midwife. Again, nice to think about but in reality there’s just no way she’s allowed that kind of freedom.
And lastly (though I could go on ranting like Steve), while I think having Swearengen as a weak, mostly unimpactful character in the movie makes sense, his character suffered the most in terms of being a watered down “pretty” version. Nothing intelligent to say, just “witty” rejoinders to whatever is said to him. He walks trixie down the aisle, because apparently Deadwood is just an old west version of Full House.
The movie told us something pretty, and for that I loathe it entirely.

There’s barely anything left on medium wave now, just 5 Live and Talksport with a declining audience along with the odd local station like Caroline. Long wave is in an even more moribund state with most countries having vacated the band with the BBC to follow imminently. Usually when technologies die out the spectrum gets resold for a different purpose (4G uses what used to be analogue TV spectrum for example) but the bandwidth for AM radio is so low and noise so high there’s not many other things it’d be that useful for. Given the lack of commercial demand I think there’s a case for pro-social uses to be made for the long and medium wave bands:

• Amateur radio. Giving over slices of LW and MW to radio amateurs would be an obvious thing to do in my opinion. The propagation characteristics are interesting even if the required aerials are large, although it might lead to pressures on their spectrum elsewhere.
  
• Hobbyist radio. While rare now pirate operation on MW used to be a big thing and it’s (just about) still a thing today, they’re radio nerds like amateur radio people but unlike radio amateurs they broadcast to anyone rather than talk to specific people and tend to favour music. I think allowing these broadcasts officially if power is kept low and interference minimised would be a good way to keep the spectrum useful and prevent old radios from becoming e-waste. There’s also the potential for niche vintage appeal as in vinyl and cassettes.
  
• Digital radio. Technologies like DRM allow for decent quality digital transmissions on medium wave bandwidths, but I think this would probably suffer the same issue as DAB in that internet radio is just better if you’re going digital. It would have better coverage in hilly areas though.
  
• Museum pieces. Since it’s been going for a hundred years it seems really sad to shut down BBC radio 4 longwave. Given how this country is full of the sort of people who spend their free time rebuilding steam engines and keeping British Leyland sports cars from rusting away I think there’s probably a decent chance a British longwave signal could be kept running at a low power by volunteers. Obviously nobody’s going to afford the power bill for 400 kW but Caroline manage to keep their 4 kW going on a volunteer basis.
  

Students solve the Middle East conflict. Visit to the “Dahlem Call for Peace in Palestine” on the campus of Freie Universität Berlin.
We interviewed queers for palestine and these were their sane takes.
We spoke to the future Nobel Peace Prize winners from Berlin in their protest tent.
“And somehow that was true, exactly,” explains Karl (ehe), a second semester political science student at the FU Berlin. “Exactly. That's why we've now sat down together and solved the Middle East conflict, exactly.”
Koi (hen/they), queer political spokesperson for the initiative, says: “We were tired of these constant accusations that we as queer and trans* people are so strongly committed to a free Palestine, as if we didn't know that Hamas in Gaza still tends to reject queer people and doesn't pay enough attention to women's rights,” hen asserts. “We are not naive. “Uh, yes, well, basically yes, exactly. But that was a long time ago, that's almost...” Karl counts on his hands, ‘a hundred years or so.’ And Judea, we ask, which used to be there too? “Well, that was much longer ago,” Karl looks helplessly at his ten fingers, “I don't know, we didn't study that yet.”
“In any case, it is important that Israel's current reign of terror is ended!” chants Koi. And then? “Well, then Hamas will give up its weapons and hand over power to a new civilian government,” says Joris (none/no), third semester Gender History student, explaining the students' concept for peace in the Middle East. The new Palestine should be as neutral and multilingual as Switzerland: open, liberal and sex-positive. It should also be given a new name on this occasion. “Khilafat qaws qazah”, translated: Caliphate of the Rainbow. Traudl (ehe), a theology student (Bachelor) adds: “Because the rainbow also has some significance in Jewish tradition. So it does fit.”
Perhaps a rainbow-colored unicorn could then be used as the emblem of the new Palestine, Koi dreams: “As a symbol of peace for the new open, trans*-friendly caliph.”
“Freedom of religion applies, of course!” enthuses Traudl, “Everyone can believe what they want. And if a Muslim woman in Gaza prefers to pray to the Flying Spaghetti Monster, that's okay too!”
However, the students admit that there is still a long way to go. But once Palestine is liberated, liberation from all other bourgeois constraints will follow. “Sooner or later, Hamas will also commit to multi-ethnic sex positivity!” emphasizes a male student. “And we are seeing positive signs. Hamas doesn't seem to reject sexual contact with people of other faiths per se like some of the fighters of October 7...”
Palestine of the future
We prefer to tune out quickly and listen to a FLINTA* student (she/her) who explains that in the Palestine of the future, women will also be allowed to become fighters and that every intifada will have awareness teams.
Meanwhile, Karl proudly reports that they are already working on a constitution for a free queer*feminist rainbow caliphate together with a Palestinian law student. But that is complicated. “We're struggling a bit, exactly. For example, we're still in full discussion about how animal rights should be implemented in the Palestinian constitution. In other words, whether other animals besides pigs should be protected from persecution and so on.”
We nod in understanding and ask how the students' peace plan is to proceed: “Well, we've already emailed our plan to Judith Butler and Deborah Feldman,” says Koi, and Karl adds: “And to the embassies of Egypt and Qatar, who are mediating, and to South Africa and Nicaragua, who can somehow submit our plan to the UN.”
And until then? “Until then, we will continue to demand the liberation of Palestine!” And so we see the peace activists again in the afternoon at a pro-Palestinian protest camp, wedged in between a few men in bouncers clothes with bold “KALIFAT” lettering on their shirts, albeit without a gender star or rainbow unicorn. “Free Palestine!” they shout together.

First time posting; I'm sorry if I screwed up anywhere!
This happened about a year ago so I apologize if I misremember a few details.
At the time, I was running for a new group of four players. The players so far have had one adventure together: killing rats in a basement. Already the party is roleplaying together and making inside jokes. Even the new players who are a bit shy are starting to open up.
For their next adventure, the party has been recruited to go to a nearby farm that is been harassed by nearby goblins. The farm is tended to by three NPC's: Hillard, an old crotchety man who is secretly a powerful wizard in hiding after a "job gone wrong;" Mallory, his wife (who never got developed); and Dolores, their restless daughter. Hillard wants Dolores to stay on the farm, but Dolores has a hunger for adventure. The party decide to take Dolores along with them to go oust all the goblins and give her some spare equipment they have lying around. For context, her stats are all atrocious with about 6 HP to her name.
Miraculously, she survives their encounters, but not without her almost dying several times and realizing that adventuring is a lot more dangerous than she thought.
The party, to my surprise, convinces Hillard to let Dolores join them. More inside jokes appear with some players in character doting on their new adventuring buddy.
Here's where things get weird.
One of my players, our rogue, takes Dolores on his protégé. He spends most of his gold in town buying her equipment and healing potions and attempts to give her life lessons and training in their downtime. While I don't give a mechanical benefit, I do roleplay Dolores slowly building confidence, namely feeling more safe now that she has a shield and armor to hide in.
Another new player who is playing our druid decides that she is going to roleplay that she's not a fan of Dolores. While the rogue is building up Dolores' confidence and coddling her, the druid instead makes remarks that it's a waste of time as Dolores is probably just going to wind up dead. Other players in character chastise the druid for this, but it's all in character so I think nothing of it. Post session there are more jokes and things seem to be going well.
Later, I get a bunch of discord messages from the druid player that the rogue player is DM'ing her and making her feel upset and useless.
I go and talk to the rogue player and he's complaining because he doesn't like how the druid player is putting down Dolores. I tell him that firstly if he has problems with other players to bring it to me first (a policy I have so that I can filter out the vitriol if players have legitimate concerns) but I remind him that Dolores is an NPC with about 6 HP and that while he might be getting attached, the druid player is under no obligation to do so. I ask him if that's a problem for him and let him know that I will address it if it is, but he says that it isn't and apologizes for his behavior.
I speak with the other players and ask if they're having any issues with this and they're surprised I'm even asking. To them (and me) it added a much needed dynamic to Dolores.
I then ask both the druid and rogue players privately if they would be okay meeting together in a group call to have a discussion, namely to see if this can be salvaged, and they agree. Surprisingly, the rogue player apologizes for being out of line and admitting that he let it get to him. I propose that players are allowed to have different opinions and can roleplay different opinions but that any conflict will stay between characters and not extend outside the table. The players agree and make up, and the next session goes pretty smoothly.
Three sessions later and he has a full-on explosion, calling the druid player a female dog and an impolite word for female genitals, rants that she's "ruined the game by being such a downer to Dolores" and leaves the call. He messages me privately that he really enjoyed our game and would love to be invited to another one if I host, but that he can't stand how miserable "that c---" is by making everyone feel depressed (again, I spoke with the other players and they were surprised he felt that way at all.)
Part of me wanted to call him out, but I'm too nice and instead thanked him for his compliment, told him he would not be receiving a future invite to my tables, and blocked him.
I then had a long conversation with the druid player who has been absolutely emotionally destroyed by this and in tears. We have a player meeting with the remaining players about it. I offer to end the game if no one feels like playing anymore, but everyone says that they enjoyed the game thus far and wanted to see what more I had in store.
Even the druid.
Somehow that game is still going on. And Dolores is somehow still with them, alive and well.

I’m (29F) leaving for the Air Force in August & quit my job recently to prepare. My husband (30M) works full time & expects to do absolutely nothing & just relax when he gets home. I clean up around the house, cook his meals from scratch, do laundry (wash, fold, & put all clothes away), & take care of our dog (feeding, walking, etc.) while he’s at work. All of which are done or nearly done by the time he gets home.
Lately he’s been saying I’m “slacking” & “getting lazy on him” because I asked him to fix his own plate the other night. I cooked & he wasn’t ready to eat so the food sat out for a while & I had packed it away & cleaned the kitchen. Once I came upstairs & got comfortable in bed, he was ready for his food. Then last night I got takeout & he asked me to pick up some cookies from Crumbl for him, which I did. While on the phone with him driving home, I asked if he could feed the dog so I can go straight to fixing plates & he said he was busy watching videos (on my laptop) about graphic designing (although he has a business partner who does designs for him). I was a bit annoyed and said I was just asking for a little help, but never mind, I’ve got it. As I walked in the door, he was getting the dog bowl to mix the food (I boiled ground turkey for the dog earlier while he was at work to mix with his kibble). He told me he wasn’t ready to eat yet, but his food was in the fridge & I told him to let me know when he wants it. He didn’t say anything, and warmed his food & ate later.
When we were laying in bed that night, he asked me if I’m okay & if being a wife is overwhelming? He questioned if I understood the duties of being a wife & tried to make me understand that he expects to just come home and relax after work. He doesn’t mind walking the dog or taking out trash at night because it’s dark out, but even those little things I asked are problematic because he’s tired & I have the time to do them. After talking to him, he apologized for calling me lazy, but I still feel bad about it because that’s clearly how he feels because he’s said it more than once.
I have no problem doing things for him & I genuinely try to keep up with everything & rarely ask him to make his own plate (I can literally count on 1 hand how many times I have in the 2years we’ve been together). I just think it was unfair to say I’m lazy or question my capabilities as a wife because of those small things. I honestly feel a little resentment towards him about it now. Am I overreacting? Am I wrong/lazy for expecting him to do little things from time to time?

So I’ve (25 F) been living in Seattle with my fiancé (26 M) we’ve been together for about 4 years now. She spent one of her pregnancies on a broken foot and going back to work 2-6 weeks after each birth. When I was younger it seems fine but now that I’m pregnant and thinking about it, I would absolutely never be able to handle that.
ANYWAYS… I’ve had a pretty complicated pregnancy, had HG until 6 months, I still throw up but now it’s just regular morning sickness. I couldn’t work during months 2-4 and my fiancé did absolutely everything for me. He even had to carry me into the shower and wash me sometimes because I was so weak. I lost so much weight and spent lots of time in the hospital. I’m not sure how I survived that but I did. Keep in mind, during this time, people kept telling me I was just being negative and all this was happening to me because I was negative and to basically meditate and take a walk.
Fast forward, I started back working month 4 when I started feeling a little better because I felt bad and unproductive. Now I’m 8months and I’m over it, I had a TIA (MINI stroke) at work and had to be rushed to the hospital (embarrassing), I have SPD and it hurts if I walk, my job doesn’t want to accommodate a WFH structure (which is another story), and my Fiancé just wants me to quit as he doesn’t like to see me in pain.
I am super close to my mom and she has been begging me to come stay with her and she really wants me to give birth in NY. I convinced my Fiancé to let me come here and explained that my mom really wants to take care of me in this last stretch and he could have some time to breathe since I’ve been relying on him this whole time. He was not happy about it but let me go.
I get to JFK, everyone is being rude to me, I asked the man who drives the golf cart looking thing if I can hitch a ride because I’m pregnant and in some pain, he got so mad at me and told me pregnancy is not a sickness, but still let me on.
I get to my mom’s house, she put me downstairs in the basement instead of a room upstairs and will not let me sleep up there. Which is pissing me off, I have to climb 2 flights of stairs to get to the bathroom and the basement is dusty and dark with no ventilation. I told my mom when I got here that I did not want to sleep in the basement, she told me it was fine and that there was more room down there. I didn’t want to argue with her so I just let it be.
My mom’s office is also downstairs in the basement so everyday she wakes me up by coming down the stairs and crossing through the first room that I’m in to get to her office. She then proceeds to be on meetings all day. I also have no privacy and no door.
My SPD is getting really bad and everyone keeps telling me how dramatic I am and how they had to endure horrible conditions while they were pregnant and worked up until they gave birth.
Am I a bitch and being ungrateful or are people fucking with me right now? I feel like the women in my life are trying to make things harder rather than help me relax and get ready for birth. It’s almost like people are laughing at me for being pregnant and suffering.

So I was certified as a School Counselor in May of 2022, and my first job was a bust. But now I'm in a public school (finally) for this year, but I was hired for a specific state grant funded program that assists students in obtaining college credits for free during High School. Problem is, it's been "part-time" since the beginning, and they added on an extra title that I never wanted and don't enjoy (although I've been doing what I gotta do). So I was fighting to make the position full-time. Yesterday my supervisor tells me that she is going to make it full-time for the program next year, but I'll have to teach 3 out of the 4 seminar classes. Seminar class is a way for students to gain skills and knowledge towards being college-going. There's a "90 hours of extended learning" requirement for each grade for each year. That's how our district has met that requirement in the past.
So I started reaching out to other districts/schools with the same grant for insight, asking if the person who runs their program is full-time or part-time and if they're paid from the grant or what. Also how they meet the 90 hour requirement and who does that teaching.
My teacher friend from a different district said she thinks I'll have to suck it up for a year and teach the seminars because she's worried if I find a way to not need seminar, then they will use that as justification to not make me full-time.
I've also debated looking elsewhere for jobs because I'm not a teacher....and if I wanted to teach I would've gone to school for that? Also I have a 45+ min commute each way.

Context:

Influencer Haley Baylee (real name Haley Kalil) posed in an extravagant floral gown, saying, "Let them eat cake" along with a TikTok sound. This phrase, attributed to Marie Antoinette, symbolizes an out-of-touch attitude toward the suffering of the masses. Although historians doubt she actually said it, the phrase remains a powerful symbol of severe wealth inequality.
Photos of the Met Gala flooded social media alongside images of Israel's attack on Rafah in the southern Gaza Strip. The stark contrast between celebrities displaying wealth and Palestinians mourning their dead shocked the world. People compared it to The Hunger Games, where the wealthy Capitol residents dressed opulently while children died in the games. The book series' author, Suzanne Collins, drew inspiration from flipping between Iraq War coverage and reality TV shows.
The Blackout 2024 Movement:
TikTok user @ladyfromtheoutside started the Blackout 2024 movement, frustrated with celebrities' silence on Palestine. "It’s time to block all the celebrities, influencers, and wealthy socialites who are not using their resources to help those in dire need," she said in a video with 2.5 million views. "We gave them their platforms. It’s time to take it back, take our views away, our likes, our comments, our money."
People have differing views on who deserves to be blocked. For example, some believe Billie Eilish should be boycotted for not posting about Palestine, while others argue her Ceasefire pin at the Oscars showed her stance.
Celebrities Respond:
Some celebrities have spoken out. Haley Baylee posted a nearly 9-minute apology video, explaining she wasn't an official Met Gala guest but a host interviewing celebs. She claimed ignorance on the Palestine issue, which drew backlash. Critics argued that in the seven months since the attacks began, there has been ample time to educate oneself.
Three days ago, Lizzo posted a TikTok sharing GoFundMe pages and organizations helping people in Palestine, Sudan, and Congo, stating she had donated to all three. Commenters pointed out the timing and questioned why a millionaire asked regular people to donate.

The campaign seems to be making an impact. Haley Baylee's follower count dropped from 10 million to 9.9 million. Social media users claim Kim Kardashian also lost followers after her ambiguous "Free everybody" comment to a "Free Palestine" protestor.

TikTok users such as @blockout2024, who is credited with founding the celebrity blocking campaign, have called out several of the world's biggest names. Users, from Kim Kardashian to Taylor Swift to Justin Bieber, did not hold back. In one video, @blockout2024 said followers have "full control of celebrities' money and lives." "When we hate on them, they make money. When we praise them, they make money. But when we block their social media accounts and completely forget their names, they lose it all," he said. "The amount of attention we give them and the amount of engagement we give them is their direct currency. Take it from them."
Reducing celebrities' followers aims to pressure them to highlight issues in Palestine and Sudan. Jenny, a TikTok user from Vietnam, told The New Arab that "the genocide going on in Palestine" prompted her to join the campaign. "The algorithm of TikTok allows anyone, regardless of age, sex, or societal status, to go viral if their content aligns with the interests of other users. That's why the portrayal of any social issue on TikTok is non-biased and very authentic since it's the voice of mundane people like you and me," she said.
"I've never been able to comprehend the power of social media until I saw a whole movement to support Palestine, Congo, and Sudan start from TikTok. Especially among Gen-Zs, who are perceived to be the generation that's much more sensitive to social matters."
The 22-year-old TikToker reiterated that with power comes responsibility, adding that celebrities' silence has contributed to the miseducation of humanitarian crises worldwide. "I personally feel so much rage at why people can put so much effort into participating in a lavish event, which costs thousands of dollars while being completely ignorant of the fact that people are being bombed to pieces on the other side of the world," she told The New Arab. "The Met Gala 2024 depicted the imbalance of power and resource distribution in our society."

My MIL has been pushing boundaries my entire relationship with my husband. We’ve been together going on 11 years. Sometimes I think she’s just dense and can’t read the room, and sometimes I think she is conniving and manipulating. I still haven’t figured it out. We have a 3 month old, our first, and I feel she constantly is taking opportunities away from me. She watches him sometimes while I have to go to work, which is a godsend because it is free and I feel more comfortable with him there vs a daycare with people I don’t know, but I still get miffed about the absolutely bizarre things she does. When I was pregnant she got my husband a Father’s Day gift from our UNBORN/UNNAMED child and wrote him a card from our baby… I had not even had the chance to get him anything yet before she gave it to him. Today when my husband picked our son up (he was off work before me) he came home with a cake that our son “made him” for his birthday… (his birthday is tomorrow). It says “happy birthday daddy <3 -our child’s name-“. I am SO freaking annoyed and pissed. AITAH for feeling this way?? I’ve tried my best to make boundaries before (for example asking her to NOT get our son an insane amount of gifts and keep it at MAX 5, she still pushes this envelope, and during Christmas time to not get him and gifts from Santa as that is something my husband and I would just like us to do). Any help on how I can tell her to please stop gifting things on behalf of my son??

I've recently been doing some research, away from clinical medicine and realised how badly I've looked after my own health whilst working clinically.
I qualified in 2019 and whilst not being the healthiest person in the world, I had a normal BMI, went for walks with my partner twice a week and got about 7-8 hours sleep a night.
At the start of my research I realised whilst walking up a couple of flights of stairs I was finding it a struggle and finally took a look in the mirror.
I was tired all the time barely sleeping 6 hours after a long day/night, I had gained 15 kilos, my eczema was a mess and I'd stopped going for walks.
I realised throughout the 5 years, I've blamed lots of things; the pandemic, being on social media all the time, wanting to do other things with my free time, but in reality it's the job.
Eating crap at work because the only food available out of hours are vending machines full of crisps and chocolate, having no rest facilities/on call rooms so people doing long days/nights back to back can get the maximum amount of rest are literally killing us and the government wonders why there is a productivity problem in the NHS.
This doesn't even include the long commutes due to rotational training/staying late due to the workload/exam stress and portfolio nonsense which all contribute to the above problems.
I've already made up my mind to CCT and flee to academia/industry, but in all honesty, I cannot wait until we move on from pay to the other systemic issues with working as a doctor in this country because I'm tired of being an engineer on the titanic slogging away at futility into an early grave.
The thing that got me thinking about this today was my fiancée saying, "I just realised, I've seen you every day this week, it feels weird!" and I realised I've wasted the last 5 years of my life staffing a crappy on call rota for nothing.
To avoid this once I get my life on track, does anyone have tips for staying healthy whilst working clinically?

My (24F) boyfriend (25M) have been dating for 8 months. He's my first ever relationship and first love; I've never had any experience with boys before him, having gone to an all-girls school. Although our relationship has been full of very happy memories and unforgettable experiences, it's also been challenging.
My lack of experience has impacted our relationship, as he struggles to deal with someone who doesn't initiate/lead. I've grown up in a culture that expects the man to take care of everything, so I'm still getting used to trying to initiate instead of going along with everything my boyfriend wants. My worries of scaring him away/disappointing also impact our relationship, as I usually just agree with his suggestions out of a fear of retaliation; in the past, he's said/done things that have made me scared to be myself around him/initiate (i.e. say he doesn't want to kiss me because I have no experience, doesn't like people of my financial background because of privilege, etc.). But I think the lack of bringing "myself" to the relationship has severely damaged our relationship, possibly to a point of no return even with my current efforts.
Furthermore, he's emotionally guarded and I find it very difficult to initiate deep intimate conversations. To me, having a deep emotional connection with my partner is of utmost importance, but at this point in time we only know superficial things about each other instead of our values/beliefs/history/etc. Earlier in our relationship, he expressed a frustration that we do not have an emotional bond; I agreed, and since then have tried to initiate more. However, his responses to my deep conversations always felt shallow and guarded, so at some point I stopped asking.
Recently within the past month, he began to grow increasingly distant where both physical and emotional intimacy stopped. Physical intimacy was frequent at the beginning before it completely stopped, and I have never felt so unwanted and undesired. We never hold hands, hug, kiss, or anything beyond sleeping in the same bed. I felt like a friend or roommate to him rather than a girlfriend, and every serious conversation we had in regards to the lack of romantic connection he chalked up to some excuse (i.e. me being a bad kisser, him waiting for the right time, him not an intimate person, etc.). Things never changed, and I held onto the hope it would but I grew increasingly insecure and unhappy, believing that the problem was me.
When I confronted him about his distance recently, he mentioned that he's unsure about us as a couple because he initially pursued me out of a strong desire for a relationship. I was "at the right time and right place", but he doesn't know if I'm the "right person". He told me that if I was the one, then maybe he would have an easier time opening up; he said he knows it was very selfish of him, considering how I was interested in him for who he was as a person before we dated. However he then proceeded to say that there is no such thing as the one, and that as long as we are both happy in the relationship we should keep dating. He said he can't lose me and is willing to compromise; he said he's been extremely happy with me, and that breaking up would make him so lonely. But everything he said shows me that he does not envision a long-term future with me, and that he's in this relationship because he simply does not want to be alone/is unsure of what he wants. I'm also hesitant because he's promised change in the past, but has not shown it through his actions; who's to say that this time will not be the same as the last times.
I'm beyond happy in this relationship, I've had some of the best experiences with my boyfriend. I would do anything for him, and through communication I'm learning how to express my care for him in ways he wants. I truly love him deeply, but I've been hurting especially after our last discussion. Everything that we talked about recently makes me question his intentions and whether or not he truly loves me for me. If he doesn't see a future with me, I don't understand why he continues to be in this relationship/claims he wants to work things out? I now feel like there's someone out there who's better for him, who will be able to initiate and grow a deep emotional/physical bond fastestronger than I can. However, I still love him and I want to make the relationship work.
I saw a future with him until he started growing distant, and if things change for the better I can still see a real future with him, getting married and having kids. I want to work things out, but I'm so worried the outcome will stay the same where words are promised but the actions never change. I'm so lost, I love him so much but knowing what I know now I don't know if I should give him another chance and work the relationship out or leave.
TLDR: BF is unsure about our relationship, and doesn't know if he sees a future with me. However, he still wants to make things work. Do I stay and work out our problems or leave?

Okay, so, first, my side. On Jan 28th of this year(2024), I was walking with my wife. We enjoy going for 2-3 hour walks every day, m(well we did, lol) and the last thing I remember was that I said to her “I feel dizzy”, then about 30 minutes or so later, I came to screaming in pain, as i was being put in a stretcher thingy for an Ambulance. For me, I have no memory of those 30ish minutes, according to my wife, I was trying to stand up and do other dumb shit.
Apparently, I had a stroke, seizure, or something, fell, most likely backwards, and severely broke my L7. I have a photo of the CT they did of my spine in Emerg. It’s pretty fucked.
So, that’s how my life has been for almost the last 4 months. It’s not healing and I won’t go into why i haven’t had surgery or something yet.
Well, because of this, I’ve had a great excuse to not see or deal with my mother. It’s been great(aside from the horrible physical pain and nerve pain).
Apparently 4 days ago. My mother messages me that her mother is in the hospital, I hate my Grandma so i didn’t really care.
Then 2 days later, she calls me, telling me that she’s the one actually in the hospital, basically dying. She’s saying she can’t breathe, they think she has cancer(with no symptoms or even what kind. Just “cancer”), that she’s getting a MRI of her brain because she’s been getting headaches, so she said the doctors think she some brain disease, I forget which, she was also getting a random ultrasound of her intestines, and she had a blood clot in her lungs, and because of that, she’s being put on blood thinners for the next year or longer, oh, and she’s on the verge of a heart attack because she claims her heart rate is “too high” but isn’t getting an EKG, or anything. There are a few other things I’m forgetting, aswell. But when you’re told such blatant lies, your mind can only register so much.
My wife and I guess is that she wasn’t happy that my back was giving me a valid reason to not deal with her bullshit, and this all happened on Mother’s Day, and since I didn’t go visit her in the hospital(BECAUSE I CANT), she starts to scream at me at how much I’m a piece of shit, how I don’t love her, how much my wife has turned me into a heartless monster, and when she dies from this(not even a “if”), I’ll be kicked out of her Will, and even though she supposedly paid 15,000 dollars for a spot in a mausoleum(or whatever those are called. Where your corpse is in a stone drawer, instead of the ground) and made a huge deal about how her body HAS to be placed in one, that I will not be getting any of her ashes when she’s cremated.
At this point. While I’ve started to find it funny. In the moment, I was absolutely furious. She knows full well of my horrible medical issues. Ive had a double lung transplant, I’ve been through stage 4 lymphoma, the transplant meds and chemo have really caused me alot of issues with my brain, I’ve broken my spine twice, for the last 2 years I’ve had a BP of like 180/140(roughly, and it actually caused worry in some of my doctors) and just recently got put on meds to bring that down, and so much more.
It’s so fucked that a parent who’s seen her own son struggle to survive, time and time again, to be told countless times “he’s not going to make it” to pull this shit.
I’m so done with her bullshit that if she were to die, I don’t think I would even shed a tear. After 36 years of narcissistic abuse, actually abuse, financial abuse, and more, there just isn’t any emotions for her anymore.
