2024.05.14 17:54 igreggreene Barron Read-Along 25: “Jaws of Saturn”
Barron, Laird. “Jaws of Saturn.”
The Beautiful Thing That Awaits Us All. Night Shade Books, 2013.
Summary
Carol is Franco’s girl, and when he learns a two-bit stage magician is practicing hypnotism on her, Franco goes to pay the old man a visit. But Phil Wary is no mere purveyor of parlor tricks. The line between dreams and waking, between our reality and one of monstrous dimensions, erodes, as Franco and Carol find themselves ground to bits between the “Jaws of Saturn.”
Characters
- Franco - a private security attache and enforcer. Well groomed, well read, well armed.
- Carol - Franco’s lover and resident of The Broadsword Hotel.
- Phil Wary - an elderly resident of The Broadsword and career stage magician; also a powerful practitioner of the Black Arts.
Story
In the lounge of the Broadsword Hotel, Carol tells Franco of a dream she had of her former lover Marvin Cortez. Franco tries to explain it away as mere messages from her subconscious, but he’s also jealous. In her room, they engage in vigorous sex and Franco observes that, for a moment, one of her irises is inhumanly oblong. He doesn’t know what to make of this and presses Carol on her current state of mind, especially her recent weird dreams. She admits she’s been visiting old Phil Wary in his apartment upstairs, paying him for hypnosis sessions to help kick her smoking habit. That’s all Franco needs to know. This old sheister is trying to get into Carol’s pants and he’s screwing with her head. He’ll pay Phil Wary a visit. But first, he falls asleep and dreams of lovely, voluptuous Carol standing frozen in the Broadsword lobby as a shadow of “colossal dimensions” looms over her.
Franco is a bodyguard/enforcer for millionaire Jacob Wilson and is no stranger to intimidation, violence, and murder. He ferrets out Wary’s number and rings him up. Wary dismisses Franco contemptuously over the phone (“You sound like an oaf, a knuckle dragger.”) so Franco breaks into his apartment where he confronts the old man about making moves on Carol under the guise of therapeutic mesmerism. Phil Wary is both sardonically condescending and oddly patient with Franco, giving him more than one opportunity to walk away. But Franco is consumed with (perhaps nurses) his jealousy and strikes Wary across the face with a belt, ordering him to stay away from his girlfriend. Franco’s action does not have the intended effect. Wary shakes off the blows and effortlessly subdues Franco.
Wary stows the bound Franco in a closet, on tiptoes with a belt tightened around his neck, and leaves the door ajar so he can watch as Carol enters for her hypnosis session. Something’s wrong about the closet: he can’t see its ceiling. The dimension of height goes up and up into darkness. Franco struggles to maintain consciousness and can only watch as Wary entrances Carol then guides her to his apartment wall where he pulls back a flap of old wallpaper and has her look through a hole at… Franco doesn’t know what she could possibly be seeing other than the back lot of the Broadsword. Wary releases Carol from the trance and sends her on her way. Now Wary leads Franco to the wall, telling him, “All this flesh is but a projection. We are the dream of something greater and more dreadful than you could imagine. To gaze into the abyss is to recognize the dreamer and in recognition, to wake.” He forces Franco’s eye against the hole in the wall. Franco passes out. When he comes to, he receives a call on Wary’s phone from his boss Jacob Wilson, who fires him on the spot. Wary offers tepid consolation before ejecting Franco into the hall. Franco suddenly wakes in Carol’s bed, screaming.
Franco and Carol’s nightmares intensify as the boundary between dreaming and waking life erodes. Their nightmares increasingly feature familiar locations distended into cyclopean dimensions, and threats from above - at first tendrils descending from the sky, then the hand of a giant. In desperation, Franco returns to the Broadsword, packing his pistol, but the opportunity to kill Phil Wary has passed if it truly ever existed. He has a vision of Carol in the vaulted hotel lobby and, above them, Wary - now a colossus like the titan Saturn in de Goya’s famous painting - towers above them. The giant picks up Franco and raises him to its face - but Franco “had a long, agonizing moment to recognize his own face mirrored by the primordial aspect of the giant.” Franco is devoured.
There’s a brief coda where Franco (?) wakes, a giant in an ancient or future world, and is joined by his titanic lover. Together they loom over “all the tiny houses and all the tiny works of men.”
Analysis
As I write this, I have just woken from a dream. In the dream, I am asleep and dreaming of looking at a reproduction toy catalog and, sure enough, there are three pages of the old Micronauts toy line with which I am still obsessed. I wonder if these toys will ever be reissued. Then I wake up. There’s a book at the far end of the bed. It’s out of reach and I’m still sleepy and don’t want to stretch to grab it. I wonder, as I so often have: if I focus on that book and believe that waking reality is mine to shape as I do in dreams, can I make that book
really leap into my hand? I do, and it does! I double-check to be sure I’m really awake. Yes - yes,
I’m awake! This is finally,
really happening! I try it again, pulling a rock from the ground through telekinesis. It’s
easy. I have come into my own, a demigod among men. Then I wake up, for real this time.
My subconsciousness giggles.
Pwned again.
All this to say: it’s disconcerting when the line between dreaming and waking consciousness breaks down, which is what’s happening for Franco and Carol, and at a scale that defies Euclidian geometry.
In fact, Franco’s experience is like stumbling onto the Devil’s Narnia. The closet in Phil Wary’s apartment - like C.S. Lewis’ coat-filled wardrobe - opens onto an impossibly large dimension, one lighted not by a snow-strewn lamppost but a hideous red light. For both Franco and Carol, the gulf between dreams and waking reality is melting away. The dreaminess/nightmarishness doesn’t make their experiences of this other (truer?) world any less real. Again, the occultist tells Franco, “We are the dream of something greater and more dreadful than you could imagine. To gaze into the abyss is to recognize the dreamer and in recognition, to wake.”
In
The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, the Pevensie children’s true identity is revealed as the sons of Adam and the daughters of Eve. Franco and Carol’s journey in “Jaws of Saturn” makes them a kind of Adam and Eve, but of a titanic cast. Their early sex scene shows Franco on the verge of an atavistic state, nearly unbridled from the abstraction that is modern human consciousness. The knowledge he seeks - what is Wary doing to Carol? - opens the door on a transformation that grounds him, bringing him closer to the true, perilous state of being alive, an atavistic state that finds its ultimate form as a titan in the post-civilization world of the coda. And herein we see a common journey for the Barronic hero: the search for Cursed Knowledge begins the Unraveling/Unveiling of Reality culminating in a Hideous Fate which leads to one’s Ultimate Form. (Note: Laird has a story titled "Don't Make Me Assume My Ultimate Form.”)
As I write this, my daughter has just called me from DC, upset by terrible dreams of a book that looks like the Bible, but it’s not the Bible, and our cat Izzy who died a few weeks ago has returned, but she keeps fading in and out of view. In her dream, my daughter is scared to get on an elevator because she’s on roller skates and the people in the building say the elevator is really slow, but the doors open, she gets in and the elevator moves so fast she’s floating. When it stops, the doors open onto a garden filled with people who want her to read a passage from the book that’s not the Bible: it’s
Zanderthonis, book 2, chapter 3. And she keeps trying to wake up from the dream so she can tell someone about it but she can’t escape the building.
All this to say: Watch out, friends. The dreams, they’re catching.
Connections to other stories:
- The setting of “Jaws of Saturn” is the Broadsword Hotel, seen previously in “The Broadsword.”
- Carol’s former lover is Marvin Cortez, protagonist of “The Imago Sequence.” She mentions him to Franco, and Franco knows who he is. Franco works for Jacob Wilson, nephew of Teddy Wilson whose disappearance is mentioned in “The Imago Sequence.”
- “Hand of Glory” - Phil Wary - under his pseudonym Helios Augustus - sets Johnny Cope on the trail of Conrad Paxton.
- It’s not insignificant that “Jaws of Saturn” clearly ties together the transhumanism stories of The Imago Sequence to the Old Leech stories of Occultation by placing Franco’s and Carol’s conversation about Marvin Cortez in the Broadsword Hotel where Pershing Dennard ran afoul of the Children of Old Leech.
In part VI, the doctor examining Franco checks his eyes and says “something about coloboma.”
ClevelandClinic.org notes: “The most recognizable and common colobomas affect your iris (the colored part of your eye) and cause your pupil (the dark center of your eye) to have a
keyhole shape.” In other words, what was happening to Carol is now happening to Franco, and the change is the key to unlocking the underlying reality of the world.
Discussion
- What did Franco see through the hole in the wall in Phil Wary’s apartment?
- What’s the significance of Saturn, and specifically the de Goya painting of Saturn eating his children?
- Did I miss connections to any other Laird Barron story?
- Which Broadsword resident has the worse fate? Pershing Dennard (“The Broadsword”) or Franco (“Jaws of Saturn”)?
- Which other Barronic heroes undergo the ordeal of Cursed Knowledge > Unveiling Reality > Hideous Fate > Ultimate Form?

2024.05.14 14:15 sunsetsandbouquets Who else can’t handle corporate jobs? I become the worst version of myself …
My tolerance for stress is significantly lower compared to others. This has affected my self esteem as many of my friends have high up jobs whereas I could barely handle being an Executive Assistant without wanting to tear my hair out.
These environments tends to lead to heightened anxiety and paranoia and I snowball….
To cope with the demands of my office jobs, I've found myself relying on excessive drinking, weekend partying, and struggling with food, waking up at 3-5am and doom scrolling or punishing my body with horrid HIIT workouts until I want to collapse.
I often vacillate between feeling hyper-vigilant and completely demotivated, tearful then irritable or cranky and tend to overanalyze my colleagues' expressions, constantly seeking their approval while simultaneously distrusting their intentions. The insincerity and harshness of workplace interactions only exacerbate these feelings of inauthenticity.
I’d love to have been able to play the corporate game and actually got somewhere at 30 but it’s been near impossible when just trying to survive each day and not be paranoid.
I’ve been labelled over emotional and too sensitive in the work place and I’m so embarrassed, I cry veryyyy easily (e.g someone’s tone is too harsh) and I’ve realised working in these roles is like a minefield for BPD individuals. How does anyone climb the corporate ladder ! The absolute roller coaster is exhausting I can go from laughing with a colleague and sharing birthday cake in the kitchen to the next minute crying in the bathroom and wanting to quit due to being criticised or feeling stepped on or left out.
Can anyone relate?

2024.05.14 12:09 gobnyd I just am so sad
I'm so tired. I'm 41. Chronic bladder infections as a baby, one that almost killed me. Started having lower back spasms at 11. Doctors were like, huh, that's weird, kid. Welp, enjoy your life.
Got very active and fit, that kept it mosty at bay during my teenage years. Back pain returned in young adulthood. Cried on the way to work every day on the bus, because sitting hurt. Knelt on the floor to type at work. Got a part time job so I didn't have to sit as much. Did PT, got massages.
Migraines slowly started over the years. Recurrent UTI and yeast infection. My back would go out 3 to 4 times a year, regularly, but I was very active after the 2-week recovery period. Kept asking doctors why do I get so much back pain, infections? They were like "Iunno, some people are more prone to it. Welp, enjoy your life!"
- I don't know what the fuck happened but my neck did something bad when I was lifting a chair and it was months and months of uncontrollable spasms and complete trauma. Barely able to sleep for months. Poorly controlled pain, pain medicine-related trauma from doctors who are so afraid to give me five fucking hydrocodone at a time when I was almost at suicidal levels of pain.
Interstitial cystitis appeared a few months later just for kicks. Gastrointestinal pain started. My nervous system seemed to be jacked up after that. Super reactive to everything.
I pulled myself heroically back to some decent functionality after a few years of painful and exhausting experimentation.
Was getting back into enjoying life. Then new knee pain (chondromalacia) took away roller skating which was my favorite activity in life and probably the main thing that kept me strong and together. I've been working on my knee since 2020 and I still haven't made progress with all the PT. No one knows what to do for it. It's so incredibly frustrating and it's responsible for my slide into deep conditioning. I try to keep active with walking and PT exercises, but nothing equals skating for joy and for strengthening.
I finally piece together my own diagnosis through years of my own reading, brought it to my doctors, who confirmed. (Wish I could get paid for doing My own research). Was enjoying life as much as possible.
Then, one day, my seemingly loving husband of 12 years abandoned with no warning (He actually secretly moved out while I was gone for the weekend and let me know by email that he wanted a divorce, saying that my recent diagnosis made me a ticking time bomb waiting to ruin our lives)
The shock and pain and fear.
Fast forward 2 years through the trauma of utter blindsided betrayal by someone I thought was my best friend, and the mental trauma of being forced to do a whole divorce and fight for my future needs with someone who had suddenly, nonsensically become angry with ME, saying didn't deserve any alimony at all because I created all this chronic pain in my head to manipulate care out of him (Yes, that was his point of view. He believed that my pain was real but that it was mentally-caused. I can't explain it. It's nuts. I think it's basically his twisted rationale to make this my fault and to make abandoning a loving wife with chronic pain acceptable to assuage the guilt)
I haven't worked in years. I don't qualify for disability because I stopped working gradually, before I had a diagnosis, and I trusted my husband. So now I don't have enough recent work credits for disability.
Ironically I was doing relatively well physically when he left. I actually had some hope. Then, out of the blue a year after he left, I developed chronic tailbone pain. I haven't been able to sit down without pain for over a year. It's really a hard condition to treat, no solution in sight but strengthening, which I'm used to and I'm ready to do...
... but my hips have started possibly subluxing in the last few months? I've never had trouble there before because I've historically been very active. I don't drive. I walk everywhere, so those muscles get a lot of exercise.
But I got more deconditioned because JUST gotten over an exhausting trial of LDN which backfired on me (It caused completely new peripheral neuropathy to appear in my hands and feet and then set my migraines to become chronic, every day, for over a month)
Now it hurts to lift my leg when I lay on my side, feels like it gets stuck, like I have to rotate my leg in order to properly lift it. Sometimes I get a sharp pain in the back part where the top of the thigh bone is. Aching today. I know I have a labral tear in that leg, got to get it checked out
I'm suspecting this gradual deconditioning has finally weakened my hip/butt area, allowing my hips to sublux for the first time?
It's literally been 3 days since the amitriptyline has finally kicked in and I've gone a day or two without migraine. I just started to be able to think again.
But today's hip pain is taking me down mentally. It feels like the last straw.
How can I exercise to get better when despite my best efforts, I keep adding injury after injury? They're stacking up. They don't have solutions. I feel like I can't climb my way out.
And all the emotional trauma. I'm just tired. I've been so strong getting through the past 2 years. I don't know how much I have left.
I'm terrified because I can't sit. I can't even use a wheelchair if my hips give out. How the fuck am I supposed to live? Am I going to be bed bound? Thus far in my life it has taken me working at peak functionality to get enough exercise to keep my body together. Functionality has taken a nose dive for years now, despite my best efforts.
How much more can I fucking take?
I'm probably just having a little emotional breakdown. I hope I can improve things.
But I'm just so goddamn fucking tired.
I've tried so hard. Is this how the story ends with me? Alone, disabled, poor, and in more pain?
Thanks for listening to my novel of a rant.

2024.05.14 02:07 OddReport2117 Good parking lots for roller skating?
Looking for somewhere super smooth and not busy. I’m sure tennis courts are good options, but they’re always packed or locked up for the night. Thanks!

2024.05.14 01:21 General-Avokito My family forgot to invite me to mother's day on my first mother's day
Sorry for how long this is, I've got that ADHD trait where everything feels important for context. I'm also still trying to process everything.
So I (30F) just had my first baby six months ago. My dad passed away 12 years ago and I lost ties to his side of the family, partially because most my uncles (he has 4 brothers) live in different states and partially because my dad was the person to plan everything. So, most of my family I'm in contact with is my mom's family.
Typically, if my family invites me to family events or holidays they do so through my mom or my uncle (mom's brother) texts me or calls me. My mom, though, has been struggling with her mental health since my dad passed and the only people she really talks to are me, my brother (who lives with her), my grandma, and my great aunt. She occasionally interacts with her brother and sister. My grandma is your typical bitter, white, racist old lady and is kind of toxic toward my mom (she belittles my mom's feelings, usually places blame on my mom, plays clear favorites with her kids, etc.). So my mom has dealt with anxiety any time she's going to visit my grandma for holidays or to stay with her if she is having health issues or to watch my aunts house (she lives next door). My grandma lives about an hour from us. My mom lives 5 minutes away from me.
So the last few big holidays my mom didn't want to go to her house because of the anxiety, and as I had a newborn and was recovering from a c section (had the baby 11/19 so a week before Thanksgiving) we decided to do small holidays. For Thanksgiving I invited my mom to come over and she offered to cook Enchiladas (rather than a whole feast - which I was fine with). She brought the food over, her and my brother ate, but I wasn't hungry, yet, so I just hung out. She held the baby for a few minutes, then they both just left after the baby started getting a bit fussy. Didn't offer to help clean up, left the food on the stove (which was on) and left. I was still recovering from surgery and my partner had taken the opportunity to get some sleep since he didn't think I'd need help as my mom was there. So, I couldn't put the food away and just leave my crying newborn baby alone. Not to mention I wasn't stable enough on my feet because of where I was in my recovery. I don't remember what we did for Christmas, she did come by on her own (without my brother) and gave us gifts and hung out with the baby. She also came over one other time for a few hours to watch the baby so me and my partner could get some rest. She was at the hospital when I was in labor and after having the baby but didn't really do much to help except get me food and maybe help change a diaper. When we were discharged I told her not to worry about coming to the hospital but she was welcome to come to our house, but she said she didn't want to intrude and let us adjust to having the baby at home.
I text with my mom every few weeks and it's been clear for years that her depression has gotten pretty bad. If she talks about herself it is incredibly negative, or she is angry with everyone around her. I'm really the only one who sure hasn't been angry with. I've spent the past few years essentially being her only support system (next to my grandma and my brother - who is also battling his own mental health). I've also spent the last few years trying to get her to see a mental health professional.
She finally admitted she needed to address the anger she was having with my grandma and her incredibly low sense of self-worth. Over the last year or so I have been working with her to get her into a therapists office. I've found therapists that I think would be a good fit for her and contacted them on her behalf (I started by just sending her their contact info, but she kept coming up with excuses of why she hasn't, like she forgot to stop into the office of one she wanted to go to that was next to her masseuse or she was too anxious to call because she'll sound like an idiot). She didn't hear anergy back from them (but she also probably just didn't see any emails since her email inbox is so full with spam.) She finally asked her primary to see a psychologist and made an appointment. I texted her a week before mothers day just to check in with her to see how it went. Found out she got scammed (not from the psychologist) and it made her feel like she was dumb and couldn't do anything right. I did what I could do balance the line between comfort and trying to challenge her negative thoughts of herself. We didn't discuss mother's day.
Fast forward to the day before mother's day, my MIL's boyfriend invited me, my partner, our baby, my SIL and their grandma to breakfast on Saturday. (I also want to add, my MIL and her boyfriend watch the baby every weekend, they cleaned our house when I was in the hospital, then they helped us when we came home so I could shower and get check ups set up.) I still didn't hear back from my mom, so I texted her at 10am on Saturday asking if she wanted to go to breakfast on mother's day. During breakfast my MIL asked what I was doing and I told her I was planning to go have breakfast with my mom, but my partner had to work in the afternoon and didn't have anything else planned. I didn't hear anything back from my mom still, so when my MIL texted me that night (around 11pm) saying she wanted to see me to get pictures of me and my son on my first mother's day, I gave her my schedule and she told me to let her know a time in the morning. That night my son was up every two hours, so I didn't get any sleep until my partner took over around 4am. I woke up around 9:30ish and just ended up ordering breakfast. While we were eating we made a plan that while he was at work I would go see his mom and when he gets off we'd go thrifting then go roller skating (because mom's skate free on mother's day). I texted his mom times and everything was set. Then my mom finally texted me back saying happy mothers day and assuming I'd received an email inviting me to go to my grandma's house for mother's day. I had not, and told her. She said apparently I was left off the email my uncles fiance had sent (which she also was the first time - so I was left off multiple emails) and she said that it was an accident and that I was welcome, then asked if I had plans. I didn't think my uncle's fiance left me off intentionally, but I already had plans and told her this. Didn't hear anything for a few hours then realized I forgot to say happy mothers day and sent her another text doing so and that I love her.
I still haven't received back any response. I haven't heard anything from the rest of my family (except my brother on my dad's side who lives in another state and is completely unrelated to this). I did not go to the mother's day thing, I wasn't going to cancel the plans I already made and I wouldn't have had enough time to squeeze in a visit since it was an hour away and an hour back and would've been an all day thing. I'm incredibly disappointed and crushed, and really, really miss my dad. It was my first mother's day and the only one who put any kind of thought into it was my mother in law and my own family - my mom included - seems to consider me an after thought. They're supposed to be the ones to provide support and love through all of this. The janitor from my work sent me a happy mothers day, redditors I chat with who don't even know my fucking name wished me a happy mother's day, someone I just started talking to like 2 days ago wished me a happy mothers day, but my own family couldn't even send a text??? Ouch.
Sorry again for how long this is, I'm just kinda fucked up from the whole thing.

2024.05.13 23:58 Primtricky Does anybody in the US convert Ice Hockey skates into Roller Skates?
I have a pair that was given to me that I want converted. I don’t have the tools to do it myself but I don’t mind paying someone to do it for me.

2024.05.13 22:48 ThrowRA157386 Reoccurring dreams of being in places that don’t exist, but always stay consistent, so much so that you can describe them to other people
I’ve tried to speak to others about this, but no one has experienced similar, so I thought I’d post about it here. Over the last few years, I’ve started to visit these same imaginary places in my dreams. It was as if the places themselves have developed the more I dream about them, and recently I’ve been visiting these places every night. My dreams aren’t so much mad nonsense anymore, but just me living life as usual in this “dream land”. I can now more or less draw out a map of this place, everything stays consistent with each dream, and it’s easy now for me to describe it.
The town I visit is very similar to the town I grew up in, but not quite. In my dream, I’m very often walking on the outskirts of this town, next to a large ocean but also next to a busy road. It’s a long walk, and as I walk further I come across hotels and houses. There’s a mall, again pretty similar to the mall I’d visit as a child, but things are not the same. I visit the mall a lot in my dreams, to the point where I can describe the stores in it and where they are, a Starbucks on the bottom floor next to the escalator, a very fancy boutique upstairs, etc. A few months ago at Christmas time, there was an ice skating rink outside the mall that I dreamt of playing on.
There’s an airport that pops up a lot too, I spend a lot of time there in my dreams. Again, I can pretty accurately map it out, and for some reason I’m always sitting at the smoothie bar. There’s a gift shop that sells whisky and bears, and for some reason many levels. I’ve had dreams where I’ve been chased up and down the levels before. There’s surrounding towns I seem to visit on occasion too, as with everything else they’re similar to places I’ve been in real life, but never the same. There’s one specific town that whenever I visit I’m always buying bread and cakes from their bakery.
I’m very commonly in the Main Street of the town that I seem to visit the most. There’s a grocery store that I’ve even worked at in a few dreams, a candy store that never has what I want, a pharmacy where I always buy the pregnancy tests that give me pregnancy dreams, and a thrift store with some freaky dolls. I don’t tend to remember people, usually it’s just me, if there are people they feel like NPCs, like an unconscious presence.
They are other random places that pop up, that I’m not entirely sure where they are on the “map”, I just seem to end up there. There’s a small convenience store opposite a huge field that sometimes I just stand in, and a bus that runs past the store. Often times I find myself on it, and if I go on it takes me to the town where I buy bread. There’s a train line too that I also go on, but the train is always late or doesn’t show up. Depending on how I’m feeling, it can turn into anxiety dreams where I missed my train or forgot money, etc. I seem to get off it in the middle of nowhere every time.
There’s so much else I want to explain, but can’t seem to put into words. It’s just recently started to fascinate me because it’s very much reoccurring now, my dreams are rarely about anything other than being in these places. It’s crazy to me that it’s consistent every time, the details remain the same, and the fact I can now recall and remember these details is quite trippy. Does anyone else experience similar? I hope I don’t sound too crazy.

2024.05.13 19:38 Aware-Instruction373 Rutgers Roller Rink
Can you please stop using the roller rink for activities that don’t involve skating!!! It’s literally in the name! I wouldn’t roller skate on the tennis court, and if I did I would 100% leave if people wanted to actually play tennis on it! I understand it’s a nice enclosed space to play sports but it’s meant as a space for people to skate in. You can play your sport on the grass or a rougher pavement. I can’t skate of the grass!!!
Sorry for the rant but it’s seriously upsetting to walk all the way to the rink, find people playing cricket there, them saying they’re almost done? and then leaving 30 min later unable to skate. Plus I had to get it out so I could just move on 😮💨

2024.05.13 16:40 Several_Phone9088 Retired ice hockey player looking for help
Hi all! officially admitting my hockey career is toast but I love to skate and want to get in to rollerblading this summer! I'm overwelmed with the amount of specs on these skates (wheel hardness, 3 vs 4 wheel, brake or no break, wheel size, etc...). Any advice from ice hockey players that transitioned would be greatly appreciated but all is welcome!
to keep this short and sweet:
- I'm looking for a skate that will be good for cruising but is nimble enough to skate in NYC which is where I live. I'm doing this for fun not commuting so I want the specs of my skates to reflect quick transitions from forward to backward, quick turns, higher speeds, nimble.
- I played high level ice hockey for 18 years and imagine I would want something "advanced" in terms of specs. Am I ignorant for thinking this?
- What would be considered intermediate-advanced in terms of wheel hardness, 3 vs 4 wheel, wheel size or anything else relevent
- Do I need a break or is that generally for beginners?
Also a bonus would be the ability to jump into a roller hockey game if I was ever so inclined but not a must if it would change the specs of my ideal skates too much.

2024.05.13 16:00 JV701 Ice Goalie taking up Inline / Roller hockey - help with gear!
Hi guys - I am an ice goaler and I’m taking up the role of roller goaler. Can yall point me in the right direction for gear?
From what I hear, I should be able to buy another set of ice gear and use that for roller (maybe downgrade and get some cheaper, lighter, lower quality stuff). I have good ice gear and don’t want to use any of that outside. Plus I imagine playing a lot - so I want to make sure I have dry ice and roller gear for games that may be close together.
I’m not really seeing any dedicated roller gear online - other than skates - which I will buy. Also any tips regarding the slide plates will be helpful. The RollerFly plates don’t seem to be in stock anywhere.
As usual, I’m overwhelmed and confused upon my cursory gear search. Need a point in the right direction. Thank you! 🏒 🥅

2024.05.13 15:23 Globinazuma We need the game to have roller skates so we can see backflip animations that don't look goofy af because of the chibi style
2024.05.13 14:35 Necropoke How did you learn to hockey stop?
Because I can't.
Without too much detail I'm new to ice hockey this year. I came from roller hockey. There is a 20 year gap between these. For all intents, I'm older and new to ice.
I'm a decent skater, some things did translate from roller to ice...cross overs, backwards transitions, even hard punch turns...all similar despite the convex nature of wheels vs concave blades.
I could stop on my online hockey skates either by utilizing a hockey stop or dragging my trailing foot perpendicular. Here's where the rubber meets the road....it's now ice, there's no real friction I guess is what I'm looking for. When I try to hockey stop, even at very slow speed on ice, I'm either dug in WAY too hard and with my heels (I know) or I just end up doing a very oddly ungraceful spin.
In my brain I know how this is supposed to work, physically I'm capable of pulling it off, but when the time comes I just can't. How did you learn to hockey stop? I can't be the only skater that has these particular 'yips' as it were.

2024.05.13 13:50 TELMxWILSON FRESH TUNES of the week! Teddy Killerz, Enei & DRS, Tim Reaper, Zero T, Repill, Danny Byrd & S.P.Y, Culrure Shock and more.. Reviews for two new shooting stars in neuro & tech [+weekly updated Spotify playlist] New Music Monday! (Week 20)
1. Skrimor - Boogie Woogie / Club Girl [Evolution Chamber]
Recommended if you like: Gydra, Punchman, Absu_NTQL
You know what we should talk more about on here? Neurofunk. Not even joking, the last proper Neuro spotlight here has been months ago, and frankly I cannot stand for this injustice anymore. So let's talk about Neuro's biggest shooting star of recent times: Skrimor!
Dzmitry Vilchytski, the Warsaw-based man behind the incredible project, is one of those people whose music isn't just well-produced and hard-hitting, he is also able to effortlessly tap into that fun, cheeky Eastern European energy that makes you want to get up from your deep slav squat and get movin'. This combo of technical prowess and musical diversity with a healthy chunk of Neuropunk attitude immediately convinced a ton of established artists across the subgenre, leading to one release after the other on Neuropunk (of course), Eatbrain and Korsakov, shortly after Garud from Teddy Killerz started working as their label A&R, plus remixes for Jade, Gydra and, well, Teddy Killerz.
That kinda omnipresence, plus all the support across the scene, almost makes you forget that his journey as Skrimor only started a little bit more than a year ago somehow?! Sure, his artist bio expands on his background a bit more and talks about how he's been involved with music since 2005, when he played in a Nu-Metal band, saw the dubstep/dnb/bass music light in 2007 while in Vilnius, graduated in 2012 and explored electronic music some more in Poland. But then, 11 years of nothing later and bam, a sick debut release on NickBee's Axon Records kicking off an avalanche that the Neuro scene hasn't seen in a while, and apparently isn't gonna stop anytime soon. Case in point: Now, after debuting on the label's wonderful Transmissions compilation series just a couple weeks back, Dzmitry is once again returning to Magnetude's, Task Horizon's and Receptor's one and only Evolution Chamber to deliver two slices of his infamously, undeniably, certifiedly raw material to the masses: Boogie Woogie / Club Girl.
We kick this one-two-punch off with a mantra to conquer any of your everyday problems: Boogie Woogie. Train delayed? Boogie woogie. Waiter brought you the wrong food? Boogie woogie. Wife divorcing you? Boogie that damn woogie already! To help us all achieve this serene state of boogie-woogie-ing, Skrimor brings us only the crunchiest of chugger basslines, propelled forward by some heavy drums, with an incredibly funky combination of cheekily distorted neuro stabs and the titular vocal mantra adding that extra bit of spice on top. Not yet enough for you to get your butt movin'? Alright, then let's go straight to the Club, Girl! To get even the laziest mofo up from their seats, Skrimor brings out the big guns: only the dirtiest of 8th note chuggy basses that even briefly turns into 4x4 later on, only the largest of neuro whomp melodies and, most importantly, only the catchiest, earwormiest vocal of the year, if not the decade! Might sound simple, but trust me, this one is a bop. Sometimes less is (Skri)more, after all.
I'm genuinely obsessed with the raw energy Skrimor is bringing to the scene lately. Even after a ton of sick output in the past year, I'm still skriming for more.
Other neuro from this week: - Redpill - The Chase EP - PAIN - Push The Pusher (Zardonic Remix) - Teddy Killerz - Do U L Me - Mean Teeth - Bring Back The Funk Remixed Part 1 - Perplex - The Basilisk - JIROBASS - Izolite / Carbon 💎
2. Aegis - Pressure & Existential 💎 [DIVIDID]
Recommended if you like: Buunshin, Maysev, Emperor
Now for a debut release that's putting all sorts of established artists to shame: Aegis, with his double single Pressure & Existential.
While this actually is the first officially released Aegis production that I am aware of, which automatically makes this our Hidden Gem Of The Week™️, the rabbit hole does of course go way deeper than that. Residing in the North Brabantian metropolis Tilburg, Nederlander Joppe Damstra has been involved in music-related endeavours since he was in the Dutch equivalent of high school. Whether it was playing in bands like Young Spirit, Locked Out or Rabble, organising events of his own, most notably the band battle tournament Fame Game in 2018 and the Save The Night events, or interning at Korsakov from 2019 to 2020, Joppe undeniably has always had an unstoppable drive to become an integral part of the music scene at large, in every possible corner. As you can maybe already tell, over time, the love for all things electronic outgrew everything else. Not only was he laying down some crazy DnBeats at some of those events, either under his real name or as BMBRMN (bomberman?), he also kept himself busy working all sorts of label operations jobs at Dimensional Music.
For our purposes though, the really interesting part begins just slightly after all that, in 2022. On the one hand, because he became part of the team at ABIS' incredible DIVIDID label as both their Event Manager and resident DJ, on the other, because that's when Aegis was finally born! Across a proper onslaught of insanely sick DIVIDID label nights, Joppe jumped on the decks in places like Vienna, Bristol, Lyon, Maribor and all over Germany and the Netherlands, converting one city after another to Aegisism, with a slew of DIVIDID dubs and, eventually, even his own creations. I remember one day last year I was supposed to go to their takeover in Berlin's VOID club, something I had been hyped about for ages (or should I say aeges), but because my body simply said no, my friend ended up going alone. When they came back the next morning, there was one thing they couldn't stop raving about: that Aegis dude. After finally experiencing his selections myself a couple months later, I can now see what they were on about - dude is a wizard. Now, with his debut release finally released, we can see if his wizardry also extends to production!
I'm happy to report that it absolutely does! Pressure opens up pandoraegis' box of destruction rather beautifully, with ominous synths constantly ringing in your ears, a delightfully eery vocal haunting you in your dreams, explosive basses going off in your face and incredibly intricate, fierce drumwork working up an actual wildfire of a storm - what a crazy introduction into the scene! As if that wasn't already huge enough, we've also got Existential on the flipside doing serious damage. Whereas the opener was still strangely lovely, this one is just downright evil. Especially that otherworldly lead synth is filled to the brim with menacing energy, but the back and forth we're getting on the drop, where the unrelenting ratatatat is interrupted by a somehow even more sinister, proper all-encompassing bassline - that shit is just ridiculous man.
I'm having problems finding puns stupid enough to fully articulate my love for this insane debut release. I'm having Aegissues, one might even say. Genuinely though: This is a crazy-good first release and I cannot wait to see what else Aegis will accomplish in the future!
Other techy things from this week: - Various Artists - Antimatter:2 EP 💎 - Misanthrop - Open World EP - Onetral - Flow 💎 - VENAL - Metamorphosis 💎 (only found these two recently)
