Fibromyalgia pain?
Hey sorry this is probably a stupid question delete if not allowed but. I am a 27 year old female, 5 ft 6 118 lbs I just recently found out from emerg I have fibro, even though I already have other disabilities like thoracic scoliosis and Panic DisordePTSD Emerg gave me gabapentin for pain. I’ve been taking it and went to my family doctor complaining of pain remaining. She upped my dosage to 300mg 3 times a day and said if she ever sees any opioids in my system from anywhere (I’m not a drug addict and don’t do street drugs I only ever go to the hospital) she will kick me out of her clinic. Currently I am at home in debilitating pain, my gabapentin hasn’t fully dispersed my burning and throbbing horrible body. I’m crying in tears and cannot sleep. What do I do? I broke down hardcore last night, had to take an Ativan, and went for a walk to my middle school park to sit on the swing. I can’t move it move it anymore. 💔 video I show every doctor from how much pain I’m in Thank you for attending my LoserTalk 🥲

2024.05.15 19:22 TomDrummForSenate50 Can you help send a new generation of leadership to Albany.

Hey! I'm Tom Drumm, Democratic candidate for the 50th Senate District in New York State, which comprises the bulk of Oswego County and a large portion of Onondaga County, including the towns of Clay, Cicero, Salina, Manlius, DeWitt, and Geddes. The Democratic Primary is fast approaching, with early voting from June 15th to the 23rd, and election day on June 25th. I'm running because I'm fairly young—I turned 31 this January—and I don't think my generation can continue to sit out and allow the "politics as usual" approach that my opponent is pushing. Of course, I have actual policy goals, too; I want to pass Jordan's Law to help our most vulnerable children, I want to fight back against attacks on reproductive autonomy, I want to make sure taxpayers don't bear the burden of unfruitful PILOT agreements, and we need more economic transparency in local government.
If this message resonates with you, here are a few ways you can help.
Let us know you're going to vote for us on June 25th. This sounds simple, but in a modern campaign, knowing ahead of time who will vote for you helps us a lot, and it lets us save resources to communicate with people who are undecided. You can fill out this form to tell our campaign you'll be voting for Tom Drumm.
Donate. Money is the most awkward thing a campaign has to talk about. But I'm not the "my turn" candidate. This is a grassroots organization—we need the money. The good thing, though, is that New York is launching a pilot program for a matching funds style public campaign finance system. What this means is simple: If you live in the 50th Senate District, anything you give me between $5 and $250 gets matched in a 1-to-12 ratio. If you donate just $5, our campaign will receive $60 from the state. This is weighted to favor smaller donations; give us $50, and the state gives us $600. If you donate the max of $250, our campaign is eligible for over $2000 in matching funds. You can donate here.
Volunteer. Gonna be honest, this is the big one. We need people to help us contact voters through canvassing, phone banking, and relational organizing. That's how we win; by building a dedicated base of support throughout Onondaga and Oswego. We have both remote and in person opportunities; if you can lend an hour a day, please fill out this form, and our Field Director will reach out to you.

2024.05.15 18:59 Sorry_Giraffe_9682 Mental Health Care, Department of Psychiatry SF

I (42,F) have been a member of Kaiser Permanente for nearly five years. Overall, my experience has been good, except when it comes to their mental health care.
I've suffered from depression most of my adult life and have had varying experiences with mental health care providers and HMOs. Unfortunately, the worst experience I've had by far has been at Kaiser. This is not a reflection on the doctors, as there are many great doctors at Kaiser, but rather on the system that seems designed to fail patients, presumably to save or make more money. There is no transparency at Kaiser, but this department takes it to another level.
I've had two therapists leave Kaiser (Beacon) while I was under their care, and now pay out of pocket just to get consistent treatment. More recently, after my previous psychiatrist retired and I was assigned a new psychiatrist. While this doctor might be suitable for some, he has changed my medication dosage without explanation and as a pre-menopausal woman, I feel I do not receive the level of care and understanding that a female psychiatrist might provide.
When I called the office to request a change, I was told that the only way to do so is by speaking directly to the Head of Psychiatry. I asked "Wouldn't he be too busy to deal with this request?" and the admin said, "it's the process." I've only ever received their voicemail and have not gotten a response.
Yes, I've filed a grievance. I am fortunate that my depression is treatable and that I have the means to pay for a therapist out of pocket. However, I cannot imagine what someone experiencing a mental health crisis would face in this system.
This is not an attack on the department's employees or the doctors who interact with patients. I am grateful for those who listen and do their best to deal with frustrated patients. I want to understand why the system is this way, how it can operate in such a manner, and what can be done - collectively - to change it.
Thank you

A thread going through the important stuff from the New Yorker
At best this trial was brought upon very flimsy evidence and at worst it's the system using her as a scapegoat for a disastrousely underfunded healthcare system
People are treating the notes she wrote, a woman going through a mental breakdown over being called BABY KILLER, WORST FEMALE SERIAL KILLER IN THE HISTORY OF BRITAIN as some sort of admission of guilt? Her writing I'm guilty on the paper apparently servers as proof but writing that she didn't do it on the exact same piece of paper doesn't?

2024.05.15 18:21 viha12 Unleash Cinematic Sound: Choosing the Perfect Audio System for Your Projector Setup

Ready to transform your living room into a mini movie theater? A top-notch projector is a great start, but to truly immerse yourself in the cinematic experience, you need a stellar audio system. Let's delve into how you can find the best speaker system for projector and elevate your home entertainment setup.
Begin by assessing your space. Is it cozy and intimate or expansive and open? Understanding your room's dimensions will help you determine the type and number of speakers needed to achieve optimal sound quality throughout.
Connectivity is key when integrating your speaker system with your projector. Look for options that offer a variety of connection methods, such as Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, HDMI, and optical inputs. This versatility ensures compatibility with your projector and other devices, allowing for seamless playback of your favorite movies and music.
When it comes to sound quality, aim for speakers that deliver a balanced and immersive audio experience. Features like Dolby Atmos and DTS:X can enhance spatial audio, making you feel like you're right in the middle of the action. Consider factors like frequency response, power output, and speaker configuration to ensure exceptional sound reproduction across all frequencies.
Installation shouldn't be a headache. Choose a speaker system that's easy to set up and configure, with straightforward instructions and user-friendly controls. Wireless speakers offer added flexibility, allowing you to position them wherever you like without being constrained by cables.
Aesthetics matter too. Select speakers that not only sound great but also complement your room's decor. Sleek, modern designs and compact form factors blend seamlessly into any space, enhancing both the audio and visual appeal of your home theater setup.
Budget is always a consideration. While premium speaker systems offer top-of-the-line performance, there are plenty of affordable options that deliver impressive sound quality without breaking the bank. Set a budget and explore different brands and models to find the perfect balance between performance and price.
In conclusion, finding the perfect audio system for your projector setup is essential for creating an immersive home entertainment experience. By considering factors like room size, connectivity options, sound quality, ease of installation, aesthetics, and budget, you can find the best speaker system for projector and enjoy a truly cinematic sound experience in the comfort of your own home.

NEW YORK - Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh launched the new FDNY recruitment campaign “ALL HEROES WELCOME.” The campaign, aimed at increasing diversity within the Department, features FDNY Firefighters touting the benefits of joining the FDNY, including flexible schedules, generous City benefits, union representation, and competitive salaries, plus retirement and pension benefits.

The filing period for the FDNY Firefighter open competitive exam opens on June 24, 2024. A written exam will be held later this year with a physical exam to follow. This is the first Firefighter exam offered in seven years.

“The men and women who work in the FDNY are our frontline heroes who put their lives on the line to keep all New Yorkers safe every day,” said New York City Mayor Eric Adams. “For the first time in nearly a decade, New Yorkers will have an opportunity to join the ranks of New York’s Bravest, and we are hoping to attract the best talent this city has to offer, while also building a workforce that mirrors the city that we love.”

“The campaign is called ‘All Heroes Welcome’ because we are hoping to attract a pool of applicants that looks like our city: people from all neighborhoods and backgrounds, who share one goal in common: a desire to serve the public and save lives,” said Fire Commissioner Laura Kavanagh. “We truly are the best Fire Department in the world, and becoming part of the FDNY will change your life. Learn about us. Get excited about us, and become part of the FDNY family.”

The campaign features 10 current FDNY Firefighters: brothers Manuel Zuaznabar (Ladder 123) and Emmanuel Zuaznabar (Ladder 110), sisters Ashley Laroche (Engine 236) and Shanah Laroche (Engine 309), Darren Grant (Squad 18), Casey Chan (Engine 15), Constance Fripp (Engine 283), Destini Torres (Engine 4), Jason Powell (Engine 44), and Tyrin Torres (Ladder 123). Each member has a unique background and reason for joining the Department and have a shared dedication to serving our city.

Available in 10 languages, the advertising campaign will appear on the transit system, online and social media channels, on the radio, and in key community newspapers throughout the open exam filing period, which runs from June 24th to August 9.
In addition to the campaign, the FDNY will conduct citywide outreach at career fairs, colleges, and houses of worship.
The FDNY offers multiple resources to assist interested candidates, including free exam prep sessions for the written portion, and work-out sessions to prepare for the candidate physical ability test.

Currently, 28% of Firefighters are minorities, with 16.5% identifying as Hispanic, 10% Black, 2.5% as Asian, and less than one percent as Native American. Additionally, 1.6% of all Firefighters are female. The last class to graduate from the Fire Academy in March was more than 50% minority, with 30% Hispanic, 16% Black, 3% Asian American, and 1.5% Native American. 3.3% were women.

Interested applicants should sign up at https://firefighter.joinfdny.com/ or email [recruitment@fdny.nyc.gov](mailto:recruitment@fdny.nyc.gov) for information on how to register for the Firefighter exam’s open filing.

2024.05.15 18:00 hoggersbridge Engines of Arachnea (Chapter 20: The God Speaks)

Link for all the chapters available for free here: Engines of Arachnea on Royal Road
Deep in the groaning halls of sinew and bone he awaited his audience with the god. At a wave of his hand the ribs which held up the ceiling contracted, tendons shifting within the pink walls of the chamber as the jagged, calcareous spurs that composed the doorway sank back into the spongy masses of tissue, revealing a passage curving down and out of sight.
Menash stood before the yawning portal and considered eternity. This was no an idle thought: here in the Dawning Chamber, the concept was very real. His father, Yulan, had stood in this exact spot times beyond count. When he was struck down in his prime by the Night Weaver and her Leaper offspring, torn limb from limb as he fought to defend Chthonis from a raiding party, Menash’s uncle, Aqavarr, had carried his broken remains over that grinning threshold to join the hosts of the dead, never to return.
A hot and heavy exhalation rattled up out of the depths, wafting in the acrid scent of the bonding pools and the wet slithering sound of the rebirthing canals. Menash felt a crackle of static in the corners of his mind before the signal sharpened and he heard It whisper distinctly:
“Enter…”
The familiar dread crept its way up the small of his back, and he gave a little shiver. No matter how many times he had communed with the Vitalus, he’d never been able to shake the feeling of his utter insignificance. But he persevered, walking bravely down the slurping passage, past the rows of broad antechambers lining either side of the hallway. Each one held a slumbering shape immersed in a cryogenic bath, towering hulks of muscle encased in ribbed and riveted plates of chitin. No two were alike in size or physiology, but all seemed to emanate the same primeval aura of dread that tickled Menash’s fight-or-flight-instinct, skewing it very much towards the latter response. These were the Hollowores, soulless avatars of the Vitalus, each one a tool capable of eradicating an entire species. As Menash approached, one of the living weapons stirred to life. A pronged, anvil-shaped head emerged from the bath, umbilical feeder tubes detaching from its armored flanks as the rest of its bulk followed, its mauve exoskeleton as sleek and shiny as amethyst. The Hollowore extended legs as thick as grown pine trees and lifted itself above him, its pairs of crushing pincers dripping amniotic fluids as it herded him towards the central room.
Bundles of white gossamer filaments spread all across the floor, encircling steaming pools of pus and acid. He saw arms and legs, sensory organs and entire exoskeletons being knitted before his very eyes, the amino acid chains being stitched on a layer at a time, the weeping pus evidence of microphages fighting off possible infections as the Vitalus did Its work.
These were the next generation of exomorphs, yet to be assigned to their hosts. It was here that Vitalus constantly improved the only thing that could ensure the continued survival of Menash’s subspecies. Exomorphs were bonded to Gallivants at birth, the organisms supplying their hosts with the means to breathe an atmosphere they was never meant to endure, and the strength to fight in a world that was red in tooth and claw. They were as swift as the summer wind and could multiply their host’s muscular power by up to twelve times their natural output.
But for all their God-given might, Gallivants were still mortal. They could and often did perish in the endless struggle for existence that the Vitalus called the Great Game. But even in death they could still commit their essence to posterity, passing down their defining traits through the malleable genetic code of the gilt helix. It was the Vitalus’ greatest boon; through the gilt helix a single individual could become a progenitor of an entire generation, becoming at one stroke the father of whole nations and peoples.
One day he too would prove worthy of the honor that Yulan had earned with his life. But he was not alone in that ambition. Menash was annoyed to find the crimson-clad Vezda and the cowardly Racek waiting for him inside, standing next to a large ball of filaments that hung from a tonsil-like growth hanging from the walls.
This node pulsed, emitting a small storm of bioelectric activity, networks of fungi conveying commands in the form of oscillating voltages to their communities of symbiotic bacteria, the latter containing greigite mineral crystals aligned in the shape of electromagnetic coils. Other networks hidden in the walls modulated and amplified the signals, and the three Gallivants steeled themselves for the onrushing flood of information as the Vitalus tapped into their minds.
He was a candle before the raging heart of the thunderstorm. For an instant Menash touched a fraction of Its intelligence, the divisions of time and space rolling back as they joined the ocean of shared consciousness, becoming one with the living systems of Arachnea. From the tiniest aeroplankton floating above the waves of the golden coastlines, to the herds of ultrapods munching their way through swathes of trees in the savannahs. Menash felt himself pushing up out of the soil, longing and lusting and reaching for the sunlight with a trillion green fingers uncurling, alive with the furious movement of life.
But what was that flicker of orange to the east? That searing heat, that prickling pain spreading like a cancer down his side?
The Vitalus scooped them up and hurled them headlong into hell itself. A roaring wildfire was sweeping into the heart of the eastern rainforests. Menash tasted ash and ruin, felt pieces of himself wither and burn, his branches tongues of fire, wood cracking from the intense blaze, sap boiling instantaneously upon contact and rupturing, splitting him right down the grain. He fled in terror, running, slithering, digging, swimming, flying away in crazed panic from the walls of red death closing in on him. As his skin flaked off in clumps of charcoal he looked back and saw it towering over the treetops, the epicenter of this howling vortex of destruction: the grey behemoth. Its burnished metal hide gleamed like copper, reflecting the fury of the conflagration burning well into the night.
Menash pulled his mind away before it was lost forever in the storm of electric potentials. He saw Racek and Vezda swaying on their feet, breathing hard and fast.
“Heart of the World,” he managed to gasp, “What is your bidding?”
The Hollowore maneuvered itself until it was facing him directly. Tiny beady eyes fixed him in their blank gaze. The node emitted a blue pulse and the creature shuddered as it received the signal. It opened a maw powerful enough to chew boulders into gravel and rumbled:
“This one is the alpha which survived first contact with anomalous variable. It will tell Us what occurred, and from whence this threat emerged.”
“It came from the karst mountain range, where the yellowjacket Amit live,” Menash replied, “It was destroying the largest mound in that area, massacring its inhabitants. It brought the mountain down on them—we’ve never seen anything like it. Zildiz was the first on the scene. She warned us not to approach, and that it was dangerous, but some of us,” here he cast an angry look at Vezda, “Some of us went ahead and tried to scavenge from the bodies of the dying. Then the behemoth ignited the air and burned scores of us to cinders.”
“Irrational. Why did you do this?”
“W-we thought that you had spawned the grey behemoth,” Menash stammered, embarrassed to say the least, “That it was the newest addition to the Great Game, another species of ultrafauna that would help perfect Arachnea.”
“Not so. It was made by an evil far older than the All-In-One,” replied the Vitalus, “It is called a Divine Engine. In cycles past, this evil sought to undo this world and all that inhabit it. In that, it almost succeeded.”
Menash felt his blood run cold at those words.
“Is it the only one of its kind?” Racek piped up. Menash and Vezda both bristled at his interruption; subordinates were only supposed to speak when spoken to.
“There were several deployed here in Our infancy. We had thought them all destroyed in the War of Creation.”
“Your Munificence,” Racek went on, heedless of the venomous looks he was getting from the other two, “Most of us survived because Zildiz persuaded us to dive into the river. She saved all our lives! But as I washed up on the riverbank, I saw the behemoth casting a seedpod into the skies. I did not see where it landed, but it was travelling in a high arc due east. Is this the behemoth’s method of reproducing? If so, then how many offspring can it generate from this one seed?”
The Vitalus met his questions with a minute of silence. Menash had never known It to take so long to respond to a query, and felt another stab of unease in his gut. Unless he was imagining things, the Vitalus seemed genuinely disturbed by the scenario that Racek has raised, enough to convince Menash that the danger was far from hypothetical.
“That is a distant possibility,” It said somewhat cryptically, “Regardless, We cannot allow the Engine’s continued existence.”
“Then it must be destroyed,” Vezda said, her barbed tail eagerly perking up.
“We are not certain that it can be,” the Vitalus said, and Menash heard Racek audibly gulp at the admission.
“But Your Omniscience, you alone are the arbiter of growth and decay,” Vezda said in disbelief, “Surely you can unmake this monster as well?”
“Perhaps. The Divine Engines were built to withstand the extremes of temperature, gravity, atmospheric pressure, acidity and irradiation found on semi-inhabitable exoplanets. Worlds of bareness and desolation, glassed by thermonuclear bombardment or infested with alien microorganisms. In the wars of Our youth, the Betrayers used tungsten-alloy warheads fired from space platforms to crack their bulkheads. Not even Our vessels, the Hollowores, could damage them in any significant way. We will need time to gather the raw materials and fabricate the weapons needed to end this threat.”
“What must we do?” Menash asked.
“If this variable is not dealt with, it could upset the delicate balance We have sacrificed so much to achieve. Already the wildfire it has caused will release close to 400 million metric tons of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and destroy 2.3 million acres of forest before Our countermeasures can stop it. Time is our limiting factor. If the Engine cannot be destroyed now, it must be restrained.”
“It hasn’t moved an inch since we last saw it,” Vezda said brightly, “Maybe it has already died?”
“Yes, and maybe your mother was a horka toad,” Racek said snidely. Vezda scowled and took a step towards him, then stopped as she remembered that she trod on hallowed ground.
“Not so. It has merely gone dormant. Having expended its fuel, it is now running on the bare minimum of its reserves. My children, you must ensure that it does not wake again. Establish a quarantine zone around the Engine and let none approach, on pain of death. The Leaper kindreds will secure the ground while the Gallivants patrol the skies.”
Vezda and Menash exchanged troubled looks. Nobody wanted Leapers establishing a foothold in what was essentially a buffer zone between their subspecies. Once allowed to settle in a habitat, it would not take long for them to adapt and become masters of their new territory. Ousting them would become a battle of attrition, and given the lower birthrates of Gallivants, it was not one they could long afford.
“Respectfully, we do not require assistance from our brother kindred,” Menash ventured, “We are more than capable of safeguarding the area ourselves.”
The node throbbed again, the bioelectric flashes taking on an angry purple hue. With a sound like the grinding of a millstone the Hollowore clashed its claws together impatiently. All three of the mortals took a hasty step back.
“The alpha will obey, or another will be found that can,” the Vitalus growled at them, “All subspecies will observe a general truce during this period. This is a temporary addition to the Great Game. Those that serve Us well shall be rewarded. We shall also enlist the aid of your terrestrial cousins, as well as the Cataphract clans to replenish the soil, and lone Saints who shall rove beyond the quarantine zone.”
Menash’s unease deepened. The Vitalus was bringing together four different kindreds, some of which killed each other on sight, in a move that reeked of desperation. The kindreds had worked together before, of course, on complex projects such as altering rainfall patterns and husbanding struggling species, but never so many at once. This was bound to end in bloodshed.
“Those that break the truce shall be chemically neutered, and their gilt helix purged from the existing gene pool,” the Vitalus continued, “You will maintain this quarantine until We have dealt with the Engine.”
“It is understood!” Menash and Vezda said at once.
“But what about Zildiz?” Racek blurted out, again risking his entire lineage by speaking out of turn, “She might still be alive out there!”
“He’s right,” Menash found himself agreeing despite his dislike for Racek, “She’s our alpha, after all. It would be a shame to lose her helix. Do we have your leave to send out a party to recover her?”
The Vitalus pondered the request for a moment, then crushed his hopes when it said:
“Regrettable, the loss of the female. Valuable stock for the breeding program. But it has not responded to Our signals—it is unlikely to have survived. The female Vezda shall take up its duties as alpha.”
“But Your Benevolence—” both men cried out in unison.
“It is decided. She has risked the Great Game, and must abide by its outcome. To speak more on this would risk Our displeasure,” the god warned.
“We can’t spare the manpower anyway,” Vezda pointed out, trying not to look too pleased at Its decision. She darted a quick look at Menash, long enough for him to see the selfish desire festering in her heart. He turned away from her in disgust, baring his blades by the slightest of margins to let her know what he thought of her, then asked the Vitalus:
“But what of the Engine’s seedpod? Should we search for it?”
“Negative!” the Vitalus boomed, its node reinforcing the word with a spike of activity that sent needles of pain spearing into their heads, “We shall complete this task. It is dangerous and can be entrusted to no other.”
The Hollowore angled its massive head towards the cavernous ceiling, armored flaps on its back sliding aside as it unfurled sets of rigid sixty-meter wings. A wide sphincter on the roof gaped open and Menash saw the evening sky awash with the stars in their milky multitudes. The Hollowore took a deep breath through the spiracles lining its thorax and abdomen, pumping air through a pair of hollow tube-like protuberances under either of its wings. Menash and the others quickly scampered to a safe distance. Seconds later there was a scream of chemical combustion and the Hollowore rose into the evening skies, leaving behind a long trail of superheated gases, the backwash almost knocking Menash off his feet. They watched as the Hollowore gained altitude, making straight for the columns of billowing smoke on the horizon, a sweeping shadow blotting out the light of the heavens.
The Vitalus’ mental presence receded with it. When it did not return, they took it to mean that they were dismissed and likewise took flight and headed for Chthonis. They were hardly out of the Dawning Chamber when Vezda seized the scrawny Racek by his wings and anchored her feet right up against his back.
“Funny little man, are you? Crack jokes at my expense again, and I’ll see to it that you’ll never fly again!” she snarled, yanking hard. Racek yelled as his wings threatened to pop out of their sockets.
“Stop!” Menash said, ramming his shoulder into her and knocking the smaller male out of her grip. Vezda rounded on him, blades out and her tail aquiver with rage.
“As for you! No one should speak to the Vitalus like that!” she shrieked, “Much less gainsay It! Are you trying to get us all killed? It is the source and continuance of life itself—”
“But the Vitalus doesn’t always consider the individual scale of things,” Menash reasoned, controlling his rising anger as he tried to defuse the situation, “Its scope of thought is beyond ours. Therefore it is up to us to look after each other. None of us can win the Great Game alone. We need people like Zildiz for the species to prosper.”
“Your logic is flawed,” Vezda spat, “Empathy is a sham devised by the selfish action of the gene, which seeks only to preserve itself. At least I am honest enough to look after my own interests. Your obsession with that whore is misplaced. Heed my words, Menash. What happened today marks a change in the Great Game. Only the ruthless will reap the rewards of this era. Think on that, and act accordingly.”
The female darted off in another direction, leaving the two behind.
“Thanks,” Racek said, rubbing at his sore shoulders, “My, my. She’s really taking her promotion very seriously, isn’t she?”
“This doesn’t make us friends,” Menash said shortly, “We share a common interest, that’s all.”
The two flew together in silence for a time, the dark canopy unrolling below their feet. Racek had always been a bitter rival for Zildiz’s affections. In the mating seasons he and Menash had flown the damsel-dance against each other countless times, racing and dogfighting at top speed through the dense bamboo thickets in an effort to impress her.
But each time she had always chosen Menash. Naturally. He was the stronger, the braver, the son of the Scourge who had slain hundreds on his lightning raids into Leaper territory. Their pairings had been brief and passionate, yet she had always laughed at the end and gone on her merry way, a rose petal borne on a scented breeze, the dalliance as meaningless to her as other concerns like eating or breathing.
But not to him. Right now, all that mattered was her. And Racek was the only one in the whole wide world who knew exactly how he felt. Did that mean he could be trusted? Menash considered the enormity of what he was about to do, and wavered. Then he saw her face in the darkness of his home, the face she wore when they were all alone together, and he took a deep breath before breaking the silence, saying:
“I’ll be in charge of the quarantine. I can arrange for you to disappear for a few days. I can have one of the younglings mimic your magnetosynaptic signal, make it seem like you’re with the rest of us.”
“You’d do that? For me?” Racek said in astonishment.
“Hah. Not for you,” Menash laughed softly. He looked Racek straight in the eyes and continued: “What’ll it be, then?”
If he so much as hesitates, I’ll have to kill him here and now, Menash told himself.
“Why, yes. Yes, of course!” the little brown male said vigorously.
“Good,” Menash sighed with relief, “She’ll be very grateful to whoever brings her home. I’d do it myself, but as an alpha I can’t risk being seen as disobedient.”
“Then why give me this chance? After all that’s passed between us?”
“I should have thought that was obvious,” Menash replied. Racek digested that for a bit, then out of nowhere said:
“If I find her—when I find her—I’ll tell her exactly who it was that sent me.”
“That won’t be necessary.”
“Bah! Just so we’re even, that’s all,” Racek grinned, his mouthparts slanting askew.
“Thanks, I guess. I’d…I’d appreciate that. You do understand what we’re risking here, right?”
“Sure. We’ll be total genetic write-offs if we’re caught. But it’s not like I wanted to see tiny ugly Raceks running around the house anyway. What about you, though? Why are you putting your neck on the chopping block?”
“You know why,” Menash said quietly, his thoughts still lingering on her face.
“Yes,” Racek agreed with a wistful air, “Yes, I suppose I do.”
And the pair spoke no more until they reached Chthonis.

2024.05.15 17:57 Viral-conclusionz8 Body binary scripts relation to your biological changes. DNA evolution and mind conjunction

The interplay between body binary scripts, biological changes, DNA evolution, and the mind is a fascinating and complex topic that spans multiple disciplines, including genetics, neuroscience, and psychology. Here’s a comprehensive overview:

1. Body Binary Scripts

Body binary scripts refer to the binary code-like instructions embedded in our DNA that direct the development and functioning of our bodies. These scripts are essentially the genetic instructions that determine everything from cell growth to the development of organs and biological systems.

2. Biological Changes

Biological changes are any alterations in the body’s structure or function. These can occur at various levels, including:

3. DNA Evolution

DNA evolution refers to the changes in the genetic material of a population of organisms over generations. This involves:

4. Mind Conjunction

The mind’s conjunction with biological and genetic factors involves understanding how our thoughts, behaviors, and consciousness are influenced by our biology. This includes:

Integration of Concepts

Genetic Basis of Behavior and Cognition

Research has shown that certain genes are associated with behaviors and cognitive functions. For example, variations in genes related to neurotransmitter systems (like serotonin and dopamine) can influence mood and behavior. These genetic factors can predispose individuals to certain mental health conditions or cognitive traits.

Epigenetics and Mind-Body Interaction

Epigenetics provides a crucial link between our environment, behavior, and genetic expression. Factors such as stress, diet, and exercise can lead to epigenetic changes that affect how genes are expressed. This means that our lifestyle choices can have direct implications on our biology and, consequently, our mental states.

Neuroplasticity and Experience

The concept of neuroplasticity demonstrates the mind’s ability to change the brain’s structure and function. Learning new skills, engaging in mental exercises, and experiencing new environments can lead to physical changes in the brain, illustrating the dynamic relationship between our experiences (mind) and our biological makeup.

Evolutionary Psychology

Evolutionary psychology explores how evolutionary processes like natural selection have shaped the human mind and behavior. Traits that were advantageous for survival and reproduction in ancestral environments have been passed down and still influence modern human behavior.

Conclusion

The relationship between body binary scripts, biological changes, DNA evolution, and the mind is deeply interconnected. Genetic instructions influence our biological and physiological processes, which in turn affect our thoughts and behaviors. Simultaneously, our experiences and behaviors can lead to biological changes through mechanisms like epigenetics and neuroplasticity. Understanding these interactions helps in comprehending the complexity of human biology and the mind, providing insights into health, behavior, and evolution.

2024.05.15 17:55 OkPreparation3288 I Don't Know What to Do

I Don't Know What to Do
3 nights ago my husky mix, Molly (13 y.o) and Great Dane Darla (1.5 y.o.) got into a fight.....
Darla is an oblivious sweet baby child and normally licks faces when she gets growled at or thinks shes in trouble ( which is never). Molly is a crotchety old hag who growls all the time, and always has been, she likes her space. Normally this works out, my 2 dogs growl at her exuberance, she becomes more exuberant, and everyone walks away without fighting. Threw nights ago was different, my boyfriend had to physically separate them and we held them back from each other.
I'm holding Darla, eyes locked with my boyfriend in a "wtf just happened" moment, when my cat Gary runs up. Gary's kind of a, we'll he's an orange cat, but he jumps onto the bed and starts aggressively hissing and attacking Darla! I've never seen him fight with any of the animals, I've seen him bap the dogs when they're not looking and then take off running like ding dong ditch, but ive never seen him so mean.
I think Gary was defending Molly....but Molly never let's Gary near him, it's just so weird I kind of laughed bc wtf???? Wilson (11 y.o Great Dane) just got out of the way and layed down.
The next day Darla growls when she sees Molly and won't let Gary jump up on the bed if he tries getting up near her. Gary came around to my side of the bed and then my cat Sophia tried to come up and Gary chased her off hissing too 😭😭😭😭. Normally my danes spoon like yin amd yang and she growled at him too but mostly got over it and let him next to her.
Yesterday my boyfriend said she was shaking and being weird. I got home and she is laser focused on the other animals movements and shakes and tries to chase them off if they come near. I was up all night because she was laying on top of me and growling or lunging at all the animals.
If you're still here, I will say she is not Spayed, she is only 1.5 years old. My other 2 dogs and 2 cats are all fixed. She just went through her second heat cycle 3 months ago, and she's always velcro attached to me or my bf, mostly me, and super affectionate. She had started laying directly on my pillow recently and takes a toy with her everywhere now, but even then she always grabbed a toy when she was happy. She growls at us to go outside, or at the vacuum cleaner. Other than that shes never understood the concept of space or other animals or people not wanting her on top of them, shes always just so goofy friendly.... I've only seen her angry when I try to move her on the bed....
WHAT IS HAPPENING -Adult female hormones? -False pregnancy 3 months after her heat cycle? -Finally grew a spine? -Just a normal spat amongst pets?
She is not spayed because I was thinking of getting into showing and potentially down the line breeding Great Danes. I love the breed, I would love to be apart of the breed solution, not the problem, and make beautiful perfect healthy dogs, so I paid a bunch for the right papers knowing I had at least 2 years to continue researching and showing and decide.
Spoiler alert, I did not show her. I have also done a LOT of research on breeding, and out every thought and considerstion into what i could bring to the breed standard, and I have decided not to breed her. After all my research though I may have become against spay😬😬😬. Taking her reproductive organs while she sleeps doesn't sit right anymore, but now I'm worried this incident happened because I didn't pay vet to remove her parts like a thief in the night. We don't leave her outside alone when she's in heat and we have the other 2 with her when she goes out! No accidentally pregnancies here, Molly is not dog friendly ( unless you're pack,)
The change happened so suddenly what do I do? How do I make them all OK with each other again? Can I leave them alone even or do I have to worry about them home alone with each other? Won't separating them make it worse? Or is it really all down to mutilating my damm dog 😭, and if so will it even help or is she permanently emotionally scarred?

2024.05.15 17:32 Cormier643 What were some weird "cis explanations" you invented to justify your transness when you were an egg?

Childhood: Girls are just better. Boys must have collectively accepted that they were unfortunately not girls.
2016: Cis men want to be pregnant. Everyone wants to get pregnant. Because cis straight boys are so curious about the female reproduction system that they actually want to experience pregnancy themselves.
2019: Women have it so much easier, it's so uncomfortable being a man, every conservative misogynist man must want to be a woman because they think women have it "on easy mode".
2020: It's already so miserable being a man, and "feminists" (TERFs) tell me I'm evil for existing? What's wrong with them? Feminists are so crazy, I'm an egalitarian, not a feminist.
2021: My past misogynist phase was so damn cringe! Women are right, they're the winning team, women are pure and clean and safe and just simply better, I want to join the winning team so badly! Every man with conscience must want to become a woman to "join the good team"!
2022: I feel so guilty with being born male, only being a woman can free me from the original sin... Wait isn't that borderline TERF rhetoric? Cringe! It's so weird, now I identify as a feminist but get weirdly offended by anything remotely TERF. Perhaps I'm just a really good cis ally. Just an ally, I promise. Anyway I still want to be a woman if TERFs didn't exist, that's just "male guilt" which all feminist men have.
2023: Now I have a boyfriend and I want to have a vagina, boobs and be treated as a woman so badly. Pretty sure every gay bottom also want to have a vagina and become a woman.
Late 2023: Only people who have come out and done HRT are trans (literally internalizing transmedicalism and transphobia to justify cisness). So I deny it when people repeatedly tell me I'm trans, I'm just a cis guy who wants to be a girl.

2024.05.15 17:09 neflhim Generator GPT

Generator GPT
https://chatgpt.com/g/g-X2xz2nOOp-builder-for-ai-characters
I worked this up based on groundwork and ideas from another AI system’s users. The goal is to provide a lot of info with possible hooks and ideas. This likely requires a subscription to use.
I set this up for my use mostly, so it assumes a female character, but just specify male and it works just as well. It’s also coded to assume 18+. I have it set to provide a character image automatically, based on the generated description.
GPT has issues getting the ‘third person no pronouns’ bit right. It is pretty good at not assuming everyone is Caucasian. It’s also pretty good at getting all the sections in the screenshots every time. Because it’s GPT, it will bump into their restrictions on images (describing a character using ‘nude lipstick’ blocked creation), but it handles darker themes with a warning.
The example is to show it works with minimal input, but adding details works just as well.
I hope this helps for those of us who need ideas from time to time.

2024.05.15 16:04 fallingraine85 Sudden Tachycardia

Hello all. Thank you for taking the time to read this. Approximately a month and a half ago, I started experiencing some concerning GI symptoms which were mainly attributed to stress at the time due to what I had going on... I definitely did have an increase in stress at that time. Ultrasounds were done which showed a complex ovarian cyst and a small, simple liver cyst. I cannot get in to my GI specialist until July 22nd. So at that time, a physician that I worked with said I probably had gastritis and silent GERD and recommended Nexium 20mg twice a day. I started that on 4/19. Within 4-5 days I noticed my heart rate becoming elevated considerably over what it typically is when I lift weights in the morning. For reference, I am a 38 year old female and I have routinely done work outs 5 days a week for the past ten years. My heart rate when weight lifting is typically 90's to MAYBE 110 at the highest. My heart rate was leaping into the 120's-130's. No chest pain. Just increased fatigue. Heart rhythm did not feel irregular (I am a nurse, so I can thankfully tell that when manually checking my pulse). I reached out to the physician who advised that I take the Nexium and he told me that he did not think the Nexium was causing my issues. So I continued to take it as he advised until completion on 05/03. Last week, I noticed my heart rate was elevated at 105 when I first got up from bed in the morning. Just standing at the sink and washing my face, it would be like 112. So I called and had a telehealth visit with my personal physician (who also had recommended I take "Prilosec or something for a little while"). I told her what was going on. She told me that "rapid heart rate is one of the more serious side effects of Nexium and it should have been discontinued when you noticed it." I was referred to a cardiologist but they are booked until 06/13. This week, my heart rate has been more normal in the mornings when I first get up (typically 80's) but when I exercise, my heart rate still spikes above my normal. This morning it jumped up to 137 but then when I stood still, it quickly dropped to 101. When I do my 3 mile walk in the afternoons/evenings, my heart rate is typically in the 90's. My resting heart rate is usually 60's-70's and has remained so throughout the day for the most part. It just seems elevated in the mornings, mainly, and in the evenings sometimes after a larger meal. I would think if the problem was the Nexium, it would certainly be out of my system by now. This is just all very odd and concerning to me. I am here to vent, request advice, and hopefully connect with someone else who can relate and perhaps help ease my anxiety while I wait a month for that cardiology appointment. I will say I received a clean bill of health in February, lab work was PERFECT, and I do not have any known health conditions outside of IBS and now possibly silent GERD I guess. I do not take medications outside of: 1. A multivitamin daily, 2. Align probiotic daily, 3. Enzymedica Digest Gold + ATPro, Maximum Strength twice a day before breakfast and dinner. 4. Natural Flow 4X Magnesium Supplement, Magnesium Taurate, Glycinate, Malate, Orotate Complex, Calm Sleep and Cramp Support Blend, No Mag Citrate or Oxide - two capsules with dinner. I started taking the Magnesium as a precaution because Nexium can deplete it over time.
Thank you again for your time.

2024.05.15 15:46 harlowslows Year on T

One year review: 9/10, would do it again.
Caveat emptor: I’m mid-30s. I have a liberal family and live in one of the good countries. I passed 50-50 before T, had PCOS and I’m pretty sure there was something else going on with my hormones. So take this with a grain of salt and YMMV as always.
The good: - I got top surgery before starting T and started passing as a teenage boy from day one post-op. By now, I pass as my age as much as I ever did pre-T (I looked like 25 pre-T and look like 25 now). - I can grow a full beard. It’s still a bit see-through on my cheeks, but I’ve been wearing it short for a few months already. I think it will probably be full enough to grow out in maybe 6 more months if it carries on like it has. - Stomach is covered in fur. Chest hair is coming in. Leg and arm hair is disappointing. - I was X-shaped pre-T (shoulders and hips equally wide). My shoulders and back blew out and fat redistribution slimmed my hips, even though I haven’t been exercising much because of health issues. I was marginally Y shaped at 3 months and am now at a point where the Y is quite pronounced. Clothes fit like they’re supposed to now (shirts and jackets used to be 1-2” too long and a tad too tight around the hips, but no more; pants are still 1-2” too long lol). Even if I got no further fat redistribution, I’d be satisfied with what I’ve got. - I grew about 1 cm (measurable, not noticeable), 1 shirt size, 1.5-2 shoe sizes, 1 glove size, and couple of links to my watch wristband. I’m now a very averagely sized dude, if a bit vertically challenged. - I got facial changes quite quickly too, but it took almost the entire year until I started seeing myself in the mirror. I’m starting to look almost exactly how I hoped I would though. - Voice dropped quickly: I went from a tenor to a baritone in just a couple of months and I’m now a bass. - Menses stopped early on: I got one period on T and then nothing. - T cured my depression. I’m shocked how big a difference it made. Pretty much every mental health complaint I had is either completely gone or manageable enough it’s mostly not an issue. - T cured my menopause symptoms. The first noticeable effect was the cessation of hot flashes and sweating. - Family’s been mostly brilliant and my transition has been a non-issue. There’s one member whose main source of information seems to be TikTok though, and I’ve had to lay down a boundary that I don’t discuss trans issues with them. - I’ve experienced close to zero transphobia IRL. That might be down to being cis-passing, but the worst I’ve encountered where my trans status has been known is some rude customer service, which could’ve been just your regular rude customer service and not transphobia. - My dysphoria is 90% gone. There’s some lingering discomfort which is half adjusting to changes and half mentally lagging behind them. It takes a while for one’s internal body image to change, for example. Genital dysphoria is still there, but it’s actually a bit easier to deal with than it was pre-T, rather than harder.
The bad: - Still haven’t figured out a T dosage that would consistently put me in male the range, so menopause symptoms return between shots. - Atrophy set in at around 3 months and it’s barely manageable with local estrogen. I’m now actively looking into getting a hysterectomy + vaginectomy asap. - Acne wasn’t too bad, about the same as in my first puberty. The worst seems to have passed or else I’ve just figured out the skincare routine that works for me now (which is completely different from what it used to be). Bacne is still happening though. - Places where I removed hair pre-T have not filled in; I broke out the minoxidil about month ago and am seeing some progress. - Voice problems (hoarseness, tiredness, not being able to raise my voice, etc.) are much worse than I expected. I think I might have to seek voice therapy. - Cholesterol went up; it’s marginally high now. My lab values overall aren’t the best, but it’s probably related to pre-existing issues. - I had a post operative infection after my top surgery. Not exactly fun, but I still honestly preferred dealing with it to dealing with tits. 😂 - Bottom growth is disappointing: I got an early burst than then nothing further. Pre-T I was set on phalloplasty, but with the rest of my dysphoria treated, I have actually gotten around to considering metoidioplasty instead. But with the growth I’ve gotten so far, that’s probably not gonna be a satisfactory option for me. - Libido was uncomfortable for maybe months 2-4; I’ve worked out how to deal with it now and it’s not a problem. - Accessing healthcare is just as much of a hassle as I thought it would be. I don’t know whether to laugh or cry, but what a ridiculous circus. 3/10 would not do it again if it was a choice. No one’s been actively transphobic, but god damn the system is not set out to be helpful either. - Updating my legal gender was easier than expected; updating my new social security number at various offices (bank, healthcare, etc) has been a hassle. I’d rather attribute it to incompetence than malice, but at this point it’s definitely something. - Nobody’s been transphobic to my face, but the society absolutely is still transphobic and it hits harder now that I can’t pretend to be cis.
The neutral: - I’ve had to buy new shirts and jackets and replace all of my shoes. My shoe size is now one of the most common ones, which means it’s the first one to be sold out. 😅 I’m a penny-pinching bugger so I’m a little miffed even if it’s at most a temporary downside, and more of a change in which size to buy in the future. - With my dysphoria treated, I went from 5/6 to 4/6 on the Kinsey scale. I guess I’ll have to start calling myself bi/pan instead of gay. 🤷🏻‍♂️ - Men don’t flirt with me as much. :( Women flirt with me more. :) It’s about 90-10 to 10-90 change. - I’m treated fully as a guy socially. It’s different from being a gal that’s “one of the guys.” There’s both male privilege I’ve gained and female solidarity and pretty privilege I’ve lost. - Many things have had a bit of a learning curve, and the beginning is awkward just like in the first puberty. Dealing with awkwardness and learning to navigate new challenges is orders of magnitude easier than it was on the first go around though, because I’m dealing with them as an adult with adult coping skills.
Bottom line:
Overall, the upsides were much better and the downsides were much less of a problem than I expected. I should’ve gotten over myself and my fears and done this 20 years ago. It’s not perfect, but few things are in practice even when they’re overwhelmingly good.

2024.05.15 15:44 Saspurillah Non-religious talking to a Catholic Professor about his faith.

Hi all,
First, this is a long post, and for that I apologize. I have a lot on my mind I’m trying to process right now. I’m also a creative writing minor, so I realize this will come across as a story.
I attend a fairly conservative college where most of the students being Christian. I myself am not religious, and due to the environment I try to keep that fact to myself so as not to be rude or disruptive. Some people do know about my lack of belief, and I’ve had mixed responses from them when they learn. Some want to convert me, others are rather nonchalant about it.
The reason I am writing is because I recently had a conversation with one of my literature professors that has left me wondering how I should respond. The conversation started after I asked him a follow up question to something he mentioned about the Bible: “That it’s the greatest story about the human condition humanity ever told.” For context, he’s been a Catholic his entire life.
My follow up question to him after class was this: “But if it’s just a story, why should we believe it, especially when there seem to be so many contradictions within it?” This tends to be my first question when someone makes a claim about the Bible, and it is born partly out of curiosity (I genuinely want to know why, as no Christian I’ve talked with has given me a good answer to it) and partly as a challenge, as I don’t want to see him wasting his life worshipping something that isn’t true. Perhaps this is not the best motivation, but it is what sparked my question.
He didn’t answer right away, but when he did this is (roughly) what he said: “My favorite story is William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury. I think it, while being fictitious, presents a deep understanding of human nature. I read it to understand the characters, and, by understanding them, hopefully learn a little bit more about myself and others in the process. Does it matter if it is true? Depends on what you mean by true. If you mean it in the sense of “this actually happened,” then you will be disappointed by a lot of literature. But if you mean it as “this reveals an important quality of human condition,” then I think it is very true.” He then chuckled and added, “Your question reminds me of a quote one of my professors told me when I was a student: ‘Everything in the Bible is true; some of it actually happened.”
This surprised me, as this is the first time I had really talked with someone who didn’t take the Bible (specifically the creation story) literally. I clarified with him to make sure I understood him correctly, and he affirmed what I said.
I probed him a bit more about that, asking if the fact that it was written by humans makes it less trustworthy. Why should we place so much faith in something that was written by mere men? I figured he would say something like “God wrote the Bible,” as that is what people I know have said.
He paused again and thought. His eventual response was this (if I recall correctly): “I have two reasons for why I believe in the Bible, one reason for believing in God, and one additional reason for why I am Catholic. The first reason for why I believe in the word of the Bible is because I think it is written by God. Unfortunately, that isn’t the most convincing reason even for myself, as why should I believe it is written by God? This leads to my second reason, which is that I simply find the story of the Bible presents to be the most beautiful and brilliant work to ever exist. I have spent years studying the intricacies of the Bible simply because I find its underlying themes and its story of human failure and promise for redemption to be gripping and compelling. Shakespeare doesn’t even come close, in my opinion. If it’s not written by God with human hands, then I don’t know what is. But this still is built upon believing that God exists, so let’s go to why I think that.
"The way I see it, faith is a natural part of human life. It is impossible to find a functional person who doesn’t trust something, and trust is one of the pillars of faith, so similar in fact that I view it as faith. If everything in the world is man-made and artificial, without divine influence, I think at the very least I would still choose to believe in the word of the Bible because I find it the most beautiful thing in the world. A large part of the reason I believe in God is because I think it is natural to have faith in something. If I am going to have faith in something no matter what, I want my faith to be in something beautiful, intellectually rigorous, and good for humanity.
“This leads into my reason for being Catholic, which is in large part it is because I think it presents the most holistic, beautiful, and practical theory for human success. Everything it teaches is geared toward human success, both individually and socially. People might disagree with what the Catholic Church defines as “human success,” but I think the Catholic Church is onto something.”
I asked him to elaborate, and he explained how the Catholic Church (if I understand correctly) places great emphasis on God’s first two commands to Adam and Eve: “Be fruitful and multiply.” “Multiply,” he explains, “sounds like what it says: make more humans.” This is not to say every male and female should hook up, but rather that we as a society should be concerned about the “continuation of our species.”
This command is to be taken hand in hand with the next one: “Be fruitful.” Making lots of babies isn’t the point--the point is to make lots of “good” humans. What does he mean by ‘good?’ “That,” he shrugs, “is where a lot of people disagree. I myself am not entirely sure how to describe ‘good’ humans, but I’ll try. I could say ‘love’ is the measure of a 'good' human, but even there people disagree with what ‘love’ is. I think love, however, is fundamentally about willing the best for the other, to the point of being willing to lay down your life for that person. An enduring society that produces those types of people is one that I would say is a good society, and I think people who take the ideals of Catholicism seriously and live them out as intended are the most likely to do that.”
I asked him about the abuse that the LGBTQ community has had to endure at the hands of Christians, and how the Catholic Church does not recognize same-sex marriage and calls those people sinners. I also asked about how denying abortion access to women is loving to them. He winces at this, and says this in reply: “A lot of people say and do terrible things in the name of Jesus and 'love.' The Catholic Church’s official teachings do not say we should be cruel to LGBTQ members or to women who have had or want an abortion. Unfortunately, people are people and people are often hypocrites, many without realizing it. When it comes to the LGBTQ community, the Catholic Church does not say ‘being homosexual is a sin,’ it says that homosexuality is a disordered desire. The ‘sin’ comes from acting on that desire, as the Catholic Church holds that all sexual acts should be reserved for the opposite sex as a unitive and potentially procreative act within the security of monogamous marriage between a man and a woman. This goes back to “be fruitful and multiply:” Sex is so very pleasurable because it is extremely important for reproduction, which is what all life, in general, tries to do. Since the sexual act has been shown scientifically to significantly rewire the human brain, shouldn’t we try to be as careful as we possibly can be with it and make sure it is used for its intended purpose: to make babies? That is part of the Church’s practical reasoning for why homosexual acts (and extramarital and non-unitive sex) are not to be encouraged or endorsed by the Catholic Church.
"Many Christians, unfortunately, forget the lessons of the Gospel stories of the woman about to stoned and the woman at the well: those two woman were isolated and outcast from their homes for their sexual acts; one of them was about to be killed it. What happens to these women is intended to be viewed as unloving. Jesus, however, befriends them despite them ‘objectively’ sinning. He never endorsed their behavior, but he still treated them with respect and love. Even if people today might argue those women did nothing wrong, the point of those stories is that Jesus considered them ‘sinners’ and yet he loved and befriended them anyway. That is literally what Jesus was doing in every city he went to: Spending time with the people who were considered terrible sinners, not because he agreed with their actions but because they are human and thus deserve to be loved. I think Christians today too often forget that is the core message of the Jesus' teachings: to love one another.
“As for abortion, the Catholic Church’s position on that rests upon our emphasis on the inherent dignity of human life. The Catholic Church believes human life begins at conception. Operating under that view, abortion is murder and should thus be strongly discouraged and/or condemned. Personally, I think it should still remain a decision between a woman and her doctor, as the doctor is the only one with the medical expertise necessary to accurately say when an abortion is actually necessary to save the woman’s life. That, however, is a tragedy, and it is one the Catholic Church acknowledges is an unfortunate situation of ‘abortion is necessary to save a life that would be otherwise lost.’ Doctors need the confidence and ability to make difficult decisions without fear of being punished for it. That means there is a risk of abuse and malpractice, but that is the nature of trust.”
We were running out of time before he had to get to his next class, so I asked him one last question that was on my mind: “Can the existence of God be proved?”
He chuckled at this. “Some of my colleagues will likely disagree with me on this, but I personally don’t put a lot of stock in ‘proofs for God.’ I haven’t found one that convinces me, and I believe in God. I think they do a good job of suggesting God exists, but proving He exists? I don’t think so. I don’t think it’s possible to prove God’s existence to someone who doesn’t already believe in God. I think the most we can do is show is why belief in God is not illogical—that’s the role of apologetics. But I can’t say, with absolute certainty, that I am right. That’s part of why it is faith: We might be wrong. If we are wrong, then ‘we are of all people the most pitiable.’” (I had to look this up afterward, as he made it sound like a quote. He was quoting Paul’s letter (1 Cor:15-19) talking about what it means if Christians are wrong about their faith. It seems he was applying this quote to all people of faith who are wrong.)
He gave me an example of what he means by ‘impossible to prove:’ “Think of your paper for this class. You, hopefully, are writing about something that you think is true. You are speculating at what the author meant, at how the author thought, why the author wrote the book or scene the way he or she did, or any works or events that likely influenced the work you are studying. Can you know for certain that you are correct?”
My answer: “No. But I can find evidence for it that shows I probably am.”
His reply: “Exactly. It is the same way with God. I don’t think we can prove God definitely exists the same way you can’t prove, with 100% confidence, that your paper’s thesis is correct. I think there is a lot of evidence that suggests God does exist, but I can’t prove it. Belief in God is inductive, and therefore inherently uncertain. This is how the Catholic Church also understands “Natural Law” and “Moral Law.” We can’t really prove either of them exist, we just have a lot of evidence gathered from observing the world and humanity that we think strongly suggests a natural and moral law. Apologists are the ones in charge of showing how our teachings and beliefs on these subjects are not inconsistent and intellectually bankrupt to hold.
“One last thing, to explain what I mean by ‘lots of evidence for God’s existence.’ Imagine we were to find Van Gogh’s The Starry Night out in the woods. I can’t prove that someone painted it, but I think a strong case can be made that someone did paint it. I might go so far as to argue it is obvious. That’s how I tend to view the world and the universe: one giant painting made by God by means of scientific laws and evolution.”
At this point he had to leave for his next class. He thanked me for the conversation and asked if I was still able to make it to cigars this Friday to celebrate the end of the term. I told him yes, and that I will probably have more questions and that I hope he didn’t mind if I asked him. He said he did not mind.
So that leads me to here: I have never had a conversation with a person of faith like this before. Almost every response he had appealed to an intuition that he seemed fine with not everyone sharing. He's also the first Christian I've met who says he doesn't think God can be proved and doesn't seem bothered by that. I suppose my question for you is: What should I ask him? What should he clarify?

2024.05.15 15:35 karenvideoeditor The Zoo [Part 6]

First / Previous
Back on the job, my eyes kept going to the camera that was on enclosure one. Andrew told me its real name, but I think that’d be a step too far, putting that out on the internet. I’d just stick with ‘Steve the bear’. Whatever it was, I just knew I’d have a nightmare about it eventually. Last night I slept fitfully but okay. But I know my brain, and I’d already had a nightmare about Yui stabbing me with one of her legs (they are not needle-sharp in real life, this was dream logic) and walking around, having not noticed I was a Ripley-kebab on her leg. I kept trying to get her attention but for some reason I’d been worried about sounding rude.
On my third walk around the zoo, at about 12 a.m. I saw Leila again, who I’d been noticing more and more often. She never looked interested in talking, only walking through the enclosures, and by that I meant any and all of them. She didn’t seem to have a favorite. I assume that however much of her mind that was left over from being alive still gravitated toward looking at the animals, since getting too close was what killed her in the first place.
Then, in enclosure eight, I saw a new creature and stopped abruptly. This one looked chill, but I wasn’t about to make any assumptions. It looked unique in a strange way, shaped like a giant lizard but built like a big cat of some sort. It had an uncanny valley human face, green hair for a mane, and also a horn like a unicorn. It felt like something drawn by an imaginative five-year-old brought to life, but was still somehow oddly endearing.
“Hello,” she spoke, noticing me noticing her. Her voice was distinctly female and oddly deep.
“Hello,” I responded with false cheer.
She pushed herself to her feet and I took an instinctive step back, but she didn't seem to notice, much less take offense. “You’re the guard here?”
“Yup. That’s me.”
“Thank you.”
I blinked, taken aback. “Ah…you’re welcome. For what?”
She cocked her head. “For guarding me.”
That was different. Most of the impressions I had gotten from the animals so far were that they wanted to eat me. And the idea that this one was thankful for me doing my job was refreshing, don’t get me wrong, but made me wary. Call me a cynic, I guess.
“My name is tàiyang. You can call me Sun,” she told me.
“Hi, Sun. I’m Ripley.”
Then she looked toward the sky. “It’s going to rain tonight.”
After a thoughtful moment, I asked, “Does that make you sad?”
“Why would it make you sad?”
I smiled. “Because your name is Sun.”
She paused and then said, “I don’t understand.”
Honestly, I wasn’t sure what I was expecting, telling a pun to one of the animals. “Never mind.” I glanced up at the sky. “I thought the rain is supposed to stay away from here. Are the ones who told me that wrong?”
“Yes.”
“Well that’s good to know,” I murmured to myself, thinking of my raincoat hanging in the security office closet. It wasn’t that surprising, honestly. Sometimes I felt like the meteorologists in Arkansas try to read the entrails of goats to figure out the weather. It’s all a mess and it’s all made up.
At that, the animal looked to the sky and fell silent. She appeared to be the most uneventful introduction I’d had so far, and I was incredibly grateful for it. Except then the animal kept talking. “He’s under a spell.”
I blinked. “What?”
She looked back to me. “Andrew. He’s under a spell. He’s very unhappy.”
I had no idea how to react to that. For a second I just stared. The sudden jolt of being told my boss was currently being afflicted by magic left me floundering. “He… What?” I finally asked. “Where is he?”
“In his office.”
Oh shit. My eyes instinctively darted in the direction of the main office. I always just entered through the door on the west side of the building, of course, since it led to the security room. It was unnecessary for me to go through the door that first led into the lobby-slash-office Andrew worked out of. Sometimes he even left early, so it was locked anyway. I had the key, but again, it was unnecessary.
Whatever had happened, assuming this animal wasn’t joking around (she seemed completely serious), I needed to establish whether she was right. Leaving the enclosure of the animal I’d just met, I quickly walked back to the small building.
Taking a deep breath, I knocked loudly. “Andrew, are you in there?”
The only reply was silence. I stood there until enough time had passed that it was obvious that no one was coming to answer the door. Taking out my phone, I dialed his cell number and wait as it rang. Then I grimaced when I heard it ringing inside.
Hanging up and shoving the phone back in my pocket, I stared at the closed door.
Trying the doorknob, I found that it was unlocked, and my heart skipped a beat. Andrew always locked his office before leaving. Opening the door slowly, the lights were off in the room, leaving only the faint red glow of the lights outside peeking around his curtains, so I turned on a light. Then my heart plummeted into my stomach, because there was Andrew, splayed limply on the ground, his eyes only half open.
I bolted to him and dropped to his side as he let out a whimper.
“Andrew,” I said, putting two fingers to the side of his neck. He remained silent, and despite his relaxed, wilted appearance, his heart was racing, and I wondered if he was in pain. The room smelled, and it was clear to me that he’d lost control of his bowels. I couldn’t believe I’d been working here for hours without knowing he was in the next room like this.
“Fucking hell. I’m so sorry it took me so long to find you. Can you hear me? What happened?” He made a small sound, unfocused eyes attempting to meet mine, but it was as if he were severely deprived of sleep or something, unable to focus. His mouth opened and he tried to say something, but he couldn’t speak. All I got was halting words mushed into each other. I felt for him; he must’ve been mortified by his condition. I would’ve been, at least.
The obvious solution would be to get Suzanne’s number from Andrew’s phone, so I searched him for it and found it in his right jacket pocket. I pressed the button the iPhone, swiped, and let out a sigh of frustration. He was security conscious enough to lock his phone with a code, of course.
“Can you… You can’t tell me the code,” I said knowing. He grunted quietly.
“What happened?”
I shrieked and jumped to my feet. Leila stood in the doorway, staring in shock at Andrew’s body. “You scared the bejesus out of me,” I exclaimed. I stopped myself before asking if she could make some noise when she moved or if I could put a bell on her. “What does it look like happened? Someone put a spell on him.” Abruptly, my stance changed, standing up straight. “Wait. Do you know how to get in touch with…anyone?” I asked desperately.
“I know Ms. Cooper’s phone number,” she said frankly.
My eyes widened. “Seriously? How?”
“Andrew gave it to me after I worked here for three months.”
That stopped my brain dead in its tracks. “You…used to work here?” I whispered. I remembered Andrew telling me that one of the night shift managers had been killed, but he hadn’t told me it was Leila. Whether it was for her own privacy or her dignity or some other reason, it didn’t really matter. What mattered was that I could call Suzanne.
“I worked here for three months,” Leila confirmed as I took out my own phone.
“Okay…what’s her number?” I asked, ready to dial. She rattled off the number and dialed it.
The phone rang twice times before someone answered. “Hello?”
“Hi, is this Suzanne?”
“Yes, who’s this?”
She had a British accent like Andrew did. I took a deep breath and said, “It’s Ripley Mason. I got your number from Leila. I’m here in Andrew’s office and he’s in really bad shape. Someone cast a spell on him and it’s like he’s lost control of the part of his brain that lets him move around and speak.”
“What?” she snapped. “What happened?”
“I-I don’t know,” I said, glancing back to Andrew. He actually looked calmer now, and I hoped that was because he knew Suzanne could fix this. “I was doing my rounds and I met Sun; she’s the one that told me and that’s why I came into his office. I don’t- Who would do this? What do I do?”
“It’s okay, Ripley. I’ll leaving now and will be there soon,” she told me. I heard rustling in the background, the sounds of getting out of a chair and footsteps. “Did you check the security cameras?”
My eyes shut in irritation against my stupidity. It hadn’t even occurred to me. “I’m sorry. Of course, I’ll do that right away.” Proof positive that I was completely out of it. Some security guard I was, not even able to keep my head in an emergency.
“Don’t apologize, Ripley, you’re quite within your rights to be discombobulated at the moment,” she said. “And I’d like you stay with Andrew, but I would prefer to know what happened. Leave his side just for a second to check the footage.
“Okay.” I crouched down to him, putting a hand on his shoulder. “I’ll be right back.” His eyes flicked to me, but he didn’t make a sound. Getting back to my feet and walking over to the security room door, I went in and sat at my desk, putting the phone on speaker so I could more easily navigate the footage.
After fidgeting around with the unfamiliar aspect of the program, since I’d never needed to look back before and Andrew only showed me how to do it once, I finally went back to the point where the spell had been cast. “Okay, he walked into his office with two men at…4:08 p.m. and it looks like he was fine with it. He wasn’t under duress, from what I can see.”
“That’s likely Michael Wise and Eric Henry,” Suzanne told me. “They were allegedly making a donation, a herd of Bagot goats.”
“Allegedly?”
“Well, I’m operating under the assumption that they lied if Andrew is spelled.”
I grimaced. That was a good point. Watching them have a conversation, I saw Andrew tense, and then turn to dart toward his desk, but he only made it two steps before one of the men raised what looked like a wand, snapping it in my late boss’s direction, speaking something. As I saw Andrew’s body seize like he’d been hit with a taser and collapse, I hissed in a sharp breath. “Cripes.”
“What is it?”
“One of them had a wand,” I managed. “He-He did something with it.”
“I’m here, Ripley. Come back to the office.”
My eyes widened and I did as I was told, stunned to see her opening the front door. “How did you get here so fast?” I asked.
The woman gave me a small smile, rendered grim by the situation. “Call it a trick of the trade.”
“Oh. Gotcha.”
Suzanne was all hard edges, her pin-straight blond hair cut at an angle just below her ears, and she wore a smart blue pants suit with matching pumps. But then she looked to Andrew and her face softened, despair and fury flashing across it as she quickly walked to him and knelt at his side, taking his weak hand in hers.
“Oh, Andrew,” she whispered. “I’m so, so sorry. You’ll be okay. I already texted a healer and asked her to come by. A friend of mine named Janine.”
I looked back to Andrew’s face, his eyes open and his expression one of exhaustion, but then quickly looked to Suzanne. “Why would someone do this?” I asked.
“I have a feeling at least one of our animals is missing,” she told me, her voice low and hard.
Anger flared up in me. “What?” I asked tersely. I glanced back in the direction of the cameras. “Should we check the cameras to see which enclosure they went to? Do we- Are there cops you can call for this? What do we do?”
Suzanne’s face slowly faded to sadness. “I’ll take care of it,” she said. “You’re accurate in that I do have a different police I’ll call about this. But there’s a good chance we won’t get the animal back.”
“Wait, why? Come on, there’s got to be magic you could do, right?” I asked anxiously.
“The animal will have been warded and sold to someone immediately,” she explained. “They would’ve had a buyer set up, and gone straight there to reduce the risk of being caught with it. Anyone who is buying an animal like this is extremely powerful, which means that even if we catch the men who stole it, they’d go to prison, but they wouldn’t risk angering the buyer. They won’t tell the authorities who it was, even for a lesser sentence. Losing an animal to robbery has only happened twice in the zoo’s history, this is the third time, but that’s how it played out both times. Actually, in the first instance, the police didn’t even catch the people who took it, since they were wearing masks.”
Just then, there was a knock at the door, and Suzanne pushed herself to her feet, walking over and opening it without hesitation. “He’s in here.” I took the opportunity to open the windows and turned down the thermostat so it would start displacing the smelly air.
A woman walked in, Janine presumably. “Oh, goodness,” she breathed, going quickly to Andrew. She took his pulse with one hand as she pulled a wand out from her purse with the other. “It’s good he’s staying calm. Redire orior can be terrifying to be subjected to.”
“He wasn’t calm when I got here,” I told her quietly. “I’ve been here for hours and didn’t know he was here until just a few minutes ago.”
Janine swore softly. “All right. Let me get started.”
I didn’t know what that meant, so I turned to Suzanne. “What did she call this?”
“The spell is ‘redire orior’. It’s a regression of part of the mind, basically all the way back to when we were first born,” she said tightly, anger flickering across her face. “He has no more control over his body than he did when he was a newborn baby.”
I grimaced, looking back to him. “Oh my god,” I whispered. It meant exactly what it had looked like when I’d walked in: Andrew had been rendered completely helpless. Rage welled up inside me, despising the men who’d done this and wishing desperately that Suzanne had been more confident in finding them.
Suzanne took the opportunity to walk into the security office and I heard her sit in my chair. Janine put down her wand to have both hands free and told Andrew, “Just relax, concentrate on breathing slowly,” she said, carefully pulling both of his legs out and rolling him onto his back. She then put his arms at his sides and, picking up her wand, pointed it at his forehead.
I took in a sharp breath of surprise as I saw a faint glow coming from the wand, through the top of it and then to Andrew’s forehead. She held that position for a while, muttering under her breath.
A few minutes later, Suzanne came out and took her phone from her pocket, saying, “I don’t recognize either of the men in the footage. But they seemed distressed, particularly the one that didn’t hurt Andrew. I don’t think that’s what was meant to happen.”
“Meant to or not, it happened,” I muttered through clenched teeth. I’d already decided that my new to-do list every day included first checking the office cameras.
“Andrew,” Janine said, letting the glow fade. “Can you speak?”
“I…yeah,” he whispered.
Suzanne came over to my side. “Thank goodness. How are you feeling? How’s the vertigo?”
“Pretty much gone,” he said, closing his eyes for a long moment, though he didn’t try to stand up.
“Andrew, I pulled up the cameras in the office and listened to the audio,” she told him. “I know what happened.”
My eyebrows furrowed. “The cameras have audio?”
“It’s under admin privileges, but yes. Andrew, you should have known better,” she said softly, looking back to him. “The gun in one of the desk drawers? I presume that’s what you were lunging for, because those two men had just made it clear they were here for an animal.”
“Yeah,” he sighed. “I just…” He looked distraught.
“They told you to just let them get what they came for,” Suzanne said. “Why didn’t you?” My lips parted in shock.
“The last time this happened, I cooperated, but…I regretted it,” he growled. “We never saw Harriet again. I couldn’t just stand here and let them do whatever they wanted. Not again.” I assumed Harriet was one of their animals, but I didn’t ask.
“Don’t ever do something so foolish again,” she told him, on the verge of being upset, her emotions likely tempered by his condition. “I want to make it clear to you that this job, these animals, they’re immensely important, but they are not worth your life. He could have killed you. If someone gains access to the zoo again to steal an animal I want you to cooperate fully. Understood?”
“Yeah,” Andrew muttered.
The idea that Andrew had tried to bring a gun to a wand fight was staggering. Something heavy curled in my stomach at the thought. It was clear he cared about the wellbeing of the animals to a degree I hadn’t comprehended.
Janine took one of the small pillows from the couch and tucked it under Andrew’s head as Suzanne continued. “All right,” she said with a sigh. “I’ll go through the footage to determine what they stole and then call the authorities to report the theft. Janine, can you continue to treat him?”
I wasn’t sure what that entailed, but Janine apparently did, since she nodded and knelt back down as Suzanne went back into the security office. Janine did the same thing that she’d done before, that soft glow channeling light into Andrew’s head. Obviously, I wanted to ask what she was doing, but I knew better than to think I’d get an answer. Instead, I sat in one of the loveseats in front of Andrew’s desk, turning it to face them.
I heard Suzanne’s voice faintly speaking to someone on the phone and the minutes ticked by. Eventually, Suzanne came back out again and she stood next to me for a long moment, watching the healing process before turning to me.
“Andrew told me you were attempting to create some enrichment activities for the animals?” asked my boss.
“Oh, uh…yeah, I am,” I answered. I assumed she was trying to make small talk to distract me from the current situation, and I appreciated it. “The first one went well. Spike loves artichokes, pecans, and hazelnuts. I went with things that made it a challenge to eat, like it’s a challenge to pull out fingernails of its prey.”
Suzanne’s expression brightened just enough for me to notice. “Ripley, that’s wonderful. Very clever.” She let out a breath. “It’s becoming more and more obvious to me that Andrew chose well in hiring you.” I gave her a small smile. “Listen, I’m going to hire someone else to be here with you on duty,” Suzanne told me, “and by that, I mean someone from my neck of the woods. Andrew explained that to you, correct?”
“Not much. Just that you’re not from Earth.”
Suzanne smiled. “That makes me sound like an alien, but yes, I’m not from this dimension. I can hire someone who has similar abilities to mine, who can check in every few hours, make sure everything’s all right, but generally make themselves scarce unless there’s an emergency. He wouldn’t have been able to do much if he’d already been here, but he’d have known what was going on. Andrew would have received assistance immediately.”
I was curious of what those abilities were, aside from being able to see the animals, but I wasn’t bold enough to ask. Also, I was curious about who this new ‘employee’ would be, but presumably I’d find out sooner or later. “That would make me feel a little better,” I said, nodding. “Knowing there was someone else here.”
She nodded once. “It’s as good as done, then. As for Andrew, he’ll need to take a few days off to recover. Would you be willing to give the tours until he’s back in ship-shape?”
My eyes bugged out of my skull. “Wait, what? I can’t even see all the animals!”
Suzanne chuckled at my expression and shook her head. “I can enchant a pair of specs for you to wear,” she told me. “It’ll give you a bit of a headache, but you’ll be able to see all of the animals. Also, I’ll give you the background for each of them, because you’ll be speaking about them to the tourists.”
I blinked, thinking of how awesome it would be to finally know all about them all. And it was flattering, the fact that she had such confidence in me that, without hesitation, she asked if I could take over for Andrew. The best thing for me to do, of course, was to be confident and assure her that I could take any temporary promotion in stride. “I’m…I’m not great with people,” I managed.
Yup. Nailed it.
“You can be a little harsh with them if you need to,” she said with a small, knowing smile. “I assumed that signing up for a job where you interact with a screen of cameras the whole time means you aren’t great with people. And Andrew did brief me on you when he hired you. How good are you at couching your insults in polite talk? The British are quite skilled, but I know Americans aren’t too bad at it.”
I smirked, remembering how a coworker friend of mine once told a customer, “Oh, bless your heart,” in her thick southern accent and it sounded like the worst insult. “I can manage that, I think.”
A buzz from the gate that went to the panel on the wall drew our attention and Suzanne walked over to let the visitors in. It was three people, a man and two women, with a gurney.
Walking over to Andrew, I folded my arms with a small smile as Janine released his head from the glow the wand was emitting. “Hey. Sorry you had to lay on the floor for so long knowing I was cluelessly reading a book in the next room.”
“Eh, not the end of the world,” he whispered. “I’ll be back on my feet soon. So, no parties while I’m gone.”
I snorted and my smile widened, and he returned it.
Going back into the security room, I pulled the system back to the multi-camera exterior view, and I sat there and listened to Suzanne talk to one of the medics, explaining everything that had happened in detail. Once she’d done that and they brought Andrew outside on the gurney, presumably to a waiting ambulance, I gave my statement, and then…it was back to work.
Obviously going back to work like nothing had changed felt weird, but Suzanne stayed, letting me know that she would get some work done at Andrew’s desk until my shift was over. It was likely the opposite of necessary, the robbers were gone, but it did make me feel a tiny bit better knowing that she was in the next room with her wand.

2024.05.15 15:21 Entire-Leader-7080 Tubal Ligation Postpartum

Can anyone tell me there experience with getting their tubes tied in the hospital after giving birth? I am 38 weeks pregnant with my second, and I’ve been debating getting the procedure the entire pregnancy. I always knew I only wanted 2 kids, so that’s not the issue. Im mostly concerned with how it will effect my postpartum recovery and ability to bond and take care of the new baby. Doctors tend to downplay female reproductive procedures, so I thought I could get a more realistic view of what to expect from people on here! Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Hereditary diseases in human
https://preview.redd.it/t1mrip0nal0d1.jpg?width=5000&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=c653c7dc902358ccb79666541a43a82922dac170
Many human diseases are caused by microorganisms — bacteria, viruses and fungi, which, penetrating into our body, break its normal functioning. However, some diseases affect their victim already at the moment of the merger of the sperm with the egg, when a new life only emerges.
These are hereditary diseases. They got their name because they are transmitted to children from their parents along with chromosomes — blocks of genetic information stored in cells. These include blood diseases such as hemophilia, Down syndrome, cystic fibrosis and color blindness. Unfortunately, the list of hereditary diseases is very big.
Inherited diseases are congenital defects, but they should not be confused with non-hereditary illnesses such as heart disease or deformation of the limbs that are caused by disorders during the period of prenatal development.
All hereditary features of a person — the color of hair and eyes, the blood type, the shape of the nose and teeth, the drawing of papillary lines on the fingers and to some extent the growth, intelligence and temperament — are determined by a set of chromosomes in the fertilized egg, which consists of 46 chromosomes grouped in 23 pairs. Each pair is unique in shape and size and visible only under a powerful microscope.
Sex cells — male sperm and female ovum — have only 23 chromosomes, that is, half the set. At the moment of fertilization, the chromosomes of the future dad merge in pairs with the ones that belong to the mom.
In the process of the formation of germ cells, the genetic information of the chromosomes of each pair is mixed. As a result, from each sperm and egg, unique chromosome sets are formed, the variety of which is infinite. That is why every person in his or her own way is unique, and, say, the older sister inherits from the father the shape of the nose and the color of hair, and the younger looks more like the mother.
Only in exactly identical twins genetic information is identical. However, even in this case, there are minimal differences between them, for example, different fingerprints.
Each chromosome contains many thousands of genes, or miniature blocks of genetic information that determine one or another characteristic. For example, the gene that defines the color of the eyes carries one of two pieces of information — either blue eyes or brown. When two different genes meet, one of them usually becomes the main one. The gene that “won” is called dominant, and the one that “lost” is recessive. The gene responsible for the brown eyes dominates the one that is responsible for the blue. A child, who inherits a brown-and-blue pair of genes, will have brown eyes. The pair "brown-brown" gives brown eyes, and the pair "blue-blue" — blue.
If the color of the eyes is determined by one pair of genes, then characteristics such as growth are controlled by many genes, although other factors, including nutrition or exercise, also strongly affect our growth. Most common hereditary diseases are associated with only one pair of genes.
The emergence of hereditary diseases is due to two main causes. The first and most common — absent or abnormal gene. The other cause of hereditary diseases is the presence of the wrong amount of the chromosomes in the gene.
Since the carriers of the genes — the chromosomes — are coupled in pairs, the absence of one or another gene means that another gene from the incomplete pair starts acting. This fact may or may not be the cause of the diseases, depending on what task this gene performs. So, the lack of a gene responsible for the color of the hair will not cause serious consequences. Inheriting an abnormal gene from one parent is dangerous only if it dominates the healthy.
The cause for one of the most famous hereditary diseases — Down syndrome — is the wrong amount of chromosomes in the cells. Patients with this disease are characterized by their appearance: a round face, wide nose bridge and slant upwards eyes, short fingers and muscle weakness. They often suffer from mental impairment and have difficulty in learning. In each cell of the body of these patients 47 chromosomes instead of 46.
In addition to chromosomal anomalies, the cells can also affect mutations of genes. They often lead to the formation of enzymes that produce genes, and as a consequence, to the abnormalities in the functioning of cells. The end result of such a mutation depends on the normal role of this enzyme — for example, pigmentation or growth. But since almost all genes form pairs, a normal twin gene can mask the development of an abnormal gene for defective enzymes. Such genes are called recessive. To produce a noticeable effect, they must be present in double amount.
There is another, much more rare hereditary diseases cause — the presence of an abnormal gene. Not being part of a chromosomal set of parents, it is still present in their sperm or egg cells. Achondroplasia — a kind of dwarfism — is due to the presence of a dominant gene in one of the chromosomes, which controls the growth of bones.
Sex-linked hereditary diseases
One of 23 pairs of chromosomes contains genes that are responsible for sexual characteristics. Women have two X chromosomes, and men have X and Y chromosomes, of which Y is slightly smaller than X.
Some hereditary disorders are due to the presence of a wrong amount of sex chromosomes — in some cells, the combination of XXY or XYY may be present. Carriers of the XXY combination often suffer from underdevelopment of reproductive organs and infertility. The combination of XYY leads to less severe anomalies. The carriers can have children and vary in height, but they still lag behind in mental development.
The cause of hemophilia and color blindness is a defective recessive gene bound to X chromosome. Therefore, these hereditary diseases are commonly found in men. Y chromosome does not have a normal dominant gene capable of suppressing the effect of a defective gene, and women suffer from these diseases only if they inherit the defective X chromosome from both parents.
Diseases, such as hemophilia, are transmitted from generation to generation, and physicians have learned to determine which parents can give birth to children with hereditary illness. Genetic abnormalities affect about 1% of all newborns. But if a couple already has a child with a genetic defect, the risk of predisposition to hereditary diseases in the second child is much higher than in other kids.
Scientists are constantly looking for ways to replace or correct abnormal chromosomes, and in the future hopefully we will learn to prevent many hereditary diseases by changing the genetic information contained in the sperm and female egg.

2024.05.15 14:50 No-Customer-9172 Infertility: Types, Causes, Symptoms, Diagnosis & Treatment

Certainly, here's a comprehensive overview of infertility, covering its types, causes, symptoms, diagnosis, and treatment options:
Types of Infertility:
  1. Primary infertility: When a couple has never been able to conceive despite regular, unprotected intercourse for at least a year.
  2. Secondary infertility: Occurs when a couple has previously conceived and given birth, but is unable to conceive again after a year of trying.
Causes of Infertility:
  1. Ovulation disorders: Irregular or absent ovulation can be caused by hormonal imbalances, polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), thyroid disorders, or stress.
  2. Fallopian tube damage or blockage: Conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID), endometriosis, or previous pelvic surgery can cause scarring or blockage of the fallopian tubes, hindering the fertilization process.
  3. Uterine or cervical abnormalities: Structural issues in the uterus, such as fibroids, polyps, or congenital anomalies, as well as cervical mucus abnormalities, can affect fertility.
  4. Male factors: Low sperm count, poor sperm motility, abnormal sperm morphology, or blockages in the male reproductive tract can contribute to infertility.
  5. Age: Advanced maternal or paternal age can reduce fertility due to declining egg and sperm quality.
  6. Lifestyle factors: Factors such as obesity, smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, drug use, and exposure to environmental toxins can negatively impact fertility.
  7. Medical conditions: Certain medical conditions, such as diabetes, autoimmune disorders, cancer, or sexually transmitted infections, can affect fertility.
Symptoms of Infertility:
  1. Inability to conceive: The primary symptom of infertility is the inability to conceive after a year of regular, unprotected intercourse (or six months for women over 35).
  2. Irregular menstrual cycles: Irregular or absent menstrual periods may indicate ovulation disorders or hormonal imbalances.
  3. Painful periods or intercourse: Conditions such as endometriosis or pelvic inflammatory disease can cause painful periods or discomfort during intercourse.
Diagnosis of Infertility:
  1. Medical history and physical examination: Healthcare providers will inquire about the couple's medical history, lifestyle factors, and sexual habits, and conduct a physical examination to identify any potential causes of infertility.
  2. Ovulation testing: Ovulation can be assessed through methods such as tracking menstrual cycles, basal body temperature charting, ovulation predictor kits, or blood tests to measure hormone levels.
  3. Semen analysis: A semen analysis is performed to evaluate sperm count, motility, morphology, and other parameters of sperm quality.
  4. Imaging tests: Ultrasound, hysterosalpingography (HSG), or hysteroscopy may be used to assess the uterus, fallopian tubes, and ovaries for abnormalities.
  5. Hormone testing: Blood tests can measure hormone levels such as estrogen, progesterone, luteinizing hormone (LH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), and thyroid hormones to assess hormonal balance and ovarian function.
  6. Diagnostic procedures: Procedures such as laparoscopy or hysteroscopy may be performed to directly visualize and diagnose abnormalities in the reproductive organs.
Treatment of Infertility:
  1. Lifestyle modifications: Adopting a healthy lifestyle, including maintaining a balanced diet, regular exercise, weight management, and avoiding harmful substances, can improve fertility.
  2. Medications: Fertility medications such as clomiphene citrate, letrozole, or gonadotropins may be prescribed to induce ovulation or improve egg quality.
  3. Assisted reproductive technologies (ART):
  1. Surgery: Surgical procedures may be performed to correct structural abnormalities in the reproductive organs, remove blockages, or treat conditions such as endometriosis or fibroids.
  2. Alternative therapies: Some couples may explore alternative or complementary therapies such as acupuncture, herbal supplements, or stress reduction techniques to improve fertility, although evidence supporting their effectiveness is limited.
The appropriate treatment for infertility depends on the underlying cause, the duration of infertility, the age of the individuals involved, and personal preferences. It's important for couples experiencing infertility to seek evaluation and guidance from a fertility specialist or reproductive endocrinologist to explore their options and develop a personalized treatment plan.

2024.05.15 14:43 Jealous_Preference79 Can a female redback reproduce with no male around?

I'll try to keep this as brief as possible - I have a female redback who has been in her enclosure for six months. She was still a juvenile when I caught her, and (from what I've read) juveniles will have a protective layer of skin over their reproductive area which doesn't go away until their final molt. About six weeks after I caught her she had her final molt, which showed that the skin over the reproductive area was still intact, so I figured I was probably safe and that she hadn't mated yet.
However, I woke up on Monday morning and checked on her as I always do, and what do I find? *AN EGG SAC* by the time I saw it she had already wrapped it up in silk and was incredibly defensive over it. Every attempt to remove the egg sac was futile, she would crawl so fast back up to her eggs before I could even position the tweezers to grab it. To be honest I noticed that she looked a little overweight but I thought that I had just overfed her lmao. I tried to find answers on Google but all I found was an article that said some males have been observed chewing through that protective layer over the females reproductive area in order to mate. I now know that it's possible her final molt wasn't actually as intact as I thought (in fact it sounds quite likely at this point) but can a female redback produce empty egg sacs? I really don't want to release her but if she actually has fertilized eggs in that sac then I'm going to have to evict them lol I know this sounds like a stupid question and the answer seems obvious even as I'm writing it, but is there any hope I can keep her? Her name is Sharon and I'm very attached to her lmao
