19,f never went out with friends. not that im not an outspoken or friendly person, got a pretty good friend circle extremely talented supportive and hardworking people. they go out all the time and dont have to constantly update their parents on slightest minute plan changes.
first time getting along with people and them instanly making plans of going out was weird but in a jealous weird and questioning. it was later i figured their parents do not ask every detail of their day, who they met, what they had, why were they 5 min late. they dont pick and drop them everywhere they have schedules. and it was after a week or hanging out that i realised, it was me living a diffent life than everyone out there. and it broke me cus that was the point i realised that in the name of protectiveness and security and ease in commutation, they just snatched my independence from me.
they provide for me and i cannot begin to thank them enough for it, pursuing a professional study and doing good at it, always supportive. but that day i sat down and got to a conclusion that if i were to upset my parents or do not do things how they want me to do, i'd lose everything. and that has happened. asked to go out with friends, note that all of my friends come from dignified background humble and kind and educated and themselves are pursuing professional studies. never asked them before so expected there wont be a problem. was in dilemma that i dont go out cuz i dont ask to go out. often picture myself as a bird in cage unaware that shes trapped unless she tries to get out. yea so access to outside without them denied. reasoned a bit on why not. they got mad and yelled and said pretty harsh things. i was in school then and it was for the teacher's birthday. we loved her dearly and she was moving out of country. i was sure they'd let me so made plans and everything cancelled last minute cried whole evening and night. that was when it started. when the bird realised she isnt in a room but a prison.
gave a couple more tries here and there. same answers. silent treatments. refused to enroll me in the course im currently pursuing initially, calling it a financial issue. and yea there were and are financial issues but hey, grasped what was going on and did everything their way. cut ties with everyone except two friends who theyve met plenty more times than others and did as they said. regular classes, not questioning them, spending time with them. enrolled and in classes after six months.
met a guy and he was good. wanted to take me on a date. i knew they wouldnt let me go. took it slow and introduced him as my friend. asked me to cut ties with him. i kinda liked him. we had good undertanding he's help me with studies and confide about his family and life in general and i thought i can date. i wanted to date him. see where it goes like every other teenager who go out on dates after classes and study and support each other. they didnt wanted me to see him or anyother guy even as a friend. deleted every guy friend of mine's contact. we still were seeing each other until i got so burnt out of the constant watch and professional studies and competitive exams also all while managing a degree. had to break ties with him for a couple while and i admittedly couldve done with proper explanation but it was a panic attack, yeah i did starting having them right after school when everything crashed down, so panic attack with all tears and snot and heavy breathing i leave him a text that i cant do this.
fast forward today. exams done. some professional practical work everyone has to take up and my father as usual would pick me up and drop me. yesterday a friend of mine suggested we buy new books and get some food after work was done which is 1:30. i thought now that im old enough, cus the last time i tried asking was 16, maybe i can go. they said yes when asked in morning. 1:45pm text comes in. where u at. when will you be back. gave a location where he'd pick me up after we're done with books things. im at metro station, shaking, holding that ticket beacuse it was all over that again. they let me go but did they? call comes in when i dont reply in 5 minutes. he asks when will i be back upto. on saying by 4, he went why books need so much time. denied that i ever mentioned lunch too. i remember saying lunch and books. couldnt argue, not used to, dont want to upset them. two of my friends waiting for the metro so we go grab lunch and spend some time for the first time in about a year since we met, and im shaking cus its so humiliating and like. this close to crying when he hung up without saying anything further and mum texts in 2 mintes asking me to come back home rn this instant. manage to apologise and run through the station, get a cab and run home in 20 min. 2:20pm. at home. i dont if im though. in my bathroom. crying shaking of embarrassment, humiliation, guilt, frustation, anger. and hunger.
also, crossed path with the guy i was seeing. he had his guitar, he used to play for me after completing studies. killed me to pass by with just a hey and by the looks of it, he was upset about it too. everything keeps falling apart everytime i accomplish one thing.
i dont know if this is how parenting is supposed to be done because none of ppl i know have such parents and controls. so its not normal but is it abusive? i question and then ignore cus the obvious answer would disrupt the peace im holding on to. the good side of them keeping me sane.

So i recently moved from the city to a country town for a new job which pays significantly higher than what the city offers (150k plus 10k bonus yearly) and asked my girlfriend to move. I have some family here but no friends. I asked my girlfriend to move with me which she assumed initially i wasnt serious but once the offer was there i couldnt resist. We said 1year and if she absolutely hates it we can move back. Shes hating it. She works from home, has no friends here and doesnt really do any social activities, which i have encouraged her to do so she can get more involved. Shes persistant on me moving back to the city at the end of the year. My plan is to save as much as i can whilst im here so i can build us a home back in the city eventually. Do you think i should move back? I have good intentions and want to just make money whilst im young for a few years then move back indefinitely. Shes really pushing me that she cant deal with it and misses her friends and family and i worry im depriving her of this. She travels back monthly for a week sometimes up to 3 weeks.
Is it selfish of me to ask her to stay longer? I feel like im working my ass off so we can both benefit in the long run but she seems to be stuck in the moment and wants to hang with her friends. We live together and its great but she often complains and it puts me under pressure.
Not sure if im being selfish asking her to stay longer or im doing the right thing for us and eventually our family..

Flying home as I write this.
First don’t sweat the weather in May. We had what looked like 5 days of rain but we didn’t get a drop of rain until the last day. Got cloudy and looked like it might rain here and there but for the most part it was very pleasant weather. Don’t sweat it but pack some options.
Cash/credit. Almost didn’t need a euro. Paid with Apple Pay everywhere - taxis, metro, sites, restaurants, etc. one exception was the artists near sacre couer only took cash. Never needed or asked for a PIN.
Sites. Did all the major sites. Each and everyone now has heavy duty security, metal detectors and even body scanners. This makes it a very slow process to get in. Plan for that.
Arc de triumph was particularly painful when we were there. Eiffel Tower is also very painful due to the queueing at the elevators. Took us 2 hours minimum to get to top and back down. Louvre did a mad dash for the Mona Lisa at 9am and that worked out well with pretty small crowds. Then got to relax and enjoy the rest of the museum.
Funny - by the Eiffel tour you can go see the Olympic countdown clock. Ironically it was showing 101 days to the games when it was only supposed to be 67. Got a picture. It even made the news. Dummies. Makes me question how prepared they are for the Olympics. Hopefully they don’t think they have an extra month of prep time :)
Olympics prep - didn’t impact us in the least. Nothing we wanted to do was blocked by it.
Safety - no issues. Felt perfectly safe late at night, on the metro, Ubers, etc. only saw one clipboard lady at the Eiffel Tower and just walked away.
Trip highlight - Le Calife dinner cruise was amazing. I’ve been to Paris several times before but never did this due to seeming like a tourist trap - which I think most are. This one gets it right. It’s high end food and service on a boat. It was awesome - not cheap though. We were very happy with our front of boat seats. Great way to end the trip. Was from 8pm to almost 11pm.
St. Chapelle was an amazing first for me. Pretty incredible and worth the body scan to get in.
Ubemetro - took the metro to/from sacre couer just to let my son have the experience - it’s very easy to buy tickets and use. Otherwise mostly walked or did Ubers which were quick and plentiful. Official taxi from Cdg to Paris was easy to find - the trip into the city however was very painful and took close to 1.5 hours with the morning traffic.
Food - too much to report. We didn’t have a bad meal anywhere and refreshing to have good service regardless of price.
Recommend an after dinner stroll to a gelato shop every night.
CDG - I was really sweating coming home today with some kind of strike going on which mostly impacted the trains but also some airport staff. Showed up 3+ hours early to CDG but breezed thru security and passport check in under 30mins. Give yourself time but the horror stories seem overblown.

One of the first things I noticed was the adjustable temperatures. It made it incredibly easy to get the perfect sear on my steaks, evenly brown my pancakes, and cook each dish to perfection without overcooking or undercooking. The LCD display and digital controls were quite user-friendly and made selecting the desired temperature a snap. Yet, there was a bit of a learning curve in the beginning. Now, the highlight of the Griddler was the DuoControl Heating Advantage. I could independently control the temperature on the upper and lower plates. I used this to cook a variety of dishes like fish, poultry, and veggies. However, it did require some trial and error to figure out the ideal temperatures for each dish. I also loved the removable drip tray and the nonstick dishwasher-safe plates. Cleanup was a breeze, which was a great thing considering how much I used the griddler. The capacity was fairly small, but as I said, it was made to handle a couple of sandwiches at a time. However, there were a couple of issues. Firstly, the bottom plate didn't cook evenly when both the top and bottom had the same temperature. To fix this, I had to play around with the temperatures to get the right results. Also, the cooking surface was quite small, but considering its compact design, it made sense. The construction was sturdy and, in fact, exceeded my expectations. So one of my best friend’s (let’s call her A) brother’s is getting married. My best friend (A), our other best friend, and I (24F) are all a long time trio. We have been a close group of friends for more than 10 years.
We are all from Southeast Asia. However, A has been living in the US since 2017. She moved there for college and has been working there ever since. She visits from time to time, usually during Christmas, and we all hang out. I’d say we video call more frequently, but since the pandemic, we only see each other in person twice a year.
A has been telling us about her older brother’s wedding for a long time. Her older brother is marrying a woman who comes from a pretty well-known family. Majority of his fiancée’s relatives are popular actors and actresses or married to them, to the point where one of her non-celeb uncles married a popular actress and ran for a high political position using that, and won.
Because A’s older brother’s wedding is in July, she is flying home to attend it as a bridesmaid. She discusses the wedding with us from time to time.
I am not actually sure if A will invite us or not, and I don’t want to voice anything because I don’t want to invite myself. Plus, the bride and groom (her brother) might want a small wedding. However, I made the mistake of telling my mom—“It’s fine if she doesn’t invite us, though I would really like to see X.” X is a popular and handsome actor; he’s the bride’s cousin, and he got pretty famous due to a Netflix show. Now, he even has an international fanbase.
My mom is now insisting that I have to jokingly tell A— “Hey, if you have extra seats, we’re willing to go! We want to catch a glimpse of X.” She says that it’s culturally acceptable in our region to voice these things out (she’s kinda right, this is an Asian wedding), and everyone in my region invites their close friends to their siblings’ weddings. My mom also said that cost won’t be an issue (A’s dad is a billionaire).
Although my friend and I do want to go, the fact that A hasn’t really said anything about inviting us probably means she’s not in charge of the invite list. Besides, July is right around the corner.
My mom keeps saying that if I don’t voice it now I’ll regret it, and that A probably wanted to invite us anyway but forgot due to her scatterbrained nature (she is pretty forgetful, one time she almost forgot to invite us to her own birthday party when we were the only non-relative guests on her list). I’m putting my foot down and told my mom I won’t be asking for an invite just out of common courtesy, and now my mom is mad.

Hi! So I’ve been with my boyfriend for 4 years now. We have basically lived together for the entirety of our relationship without actually signing a lease together. I’ve always had a separate place I’ve rented but with how expensive everything is these days it’s pointless for me to continue renting a space i barely stay in. My significant other has a house with a completely empty apartment in the basement with a shower, bedroom, and kitchen. It’s a completely separate living space from the upstairs. I could rent the space for half the price I’m currently paying and would have way more space. We both have dogs and often help take care of them for each other because we have crazy work schedules. I don’t even remember the last time we bought separate bags of dog food so it makes sense for me to move in. The plus side is that I can still have “my own place” with the convenience of still being in the same home. The only problem is my bf’s parents are extremely religious and are the landlords of the home. They wouldn’t want us living together if we weren’t married so i often hide my things when they randomly drop by. If we got our own place that they weren’t the landlord of there’s nothing they can say about it. but since they own the home my boyfriend is extremely apprehensive to ask them if I can rent the space. He has the fear that it will mess up what we’re able to do now and that they would be watching us like hawks and make it harder for me to stay there. In my opinion it doesn’t hurt to ask even if the chances of yes are slim. They had recently brought up to him that if he wanted to rent the empty space for cheaper rent he could. it’s weighing heavily on me because after being together for 4 years I’m ready to share a space together but i don’t anticipate him moving out any time soon because he could have an opportunity to buy the home in several years which would be amazing for when we get married to have a starter home. I feel like we’re too old to be having parents control aspects of our relationship it makes me feel like I’m back in highschool. I want to respect their beliefs but feel like this is technically not against it since we would have separate spaces. How do i go about this? i want my boyfriend to stop being avoidant of an uncomfortable conversation but want to respect his feelings & dealing with them being difficult about even asking. I suppose I’m trying to understand if anyone else ever went through something similar.
I was a continent away from my family for my studies. It had been two months since I’d left.
I spoke to my parents almost every other day. At 55, my father was the most fit person in the family. He ate healthy and exercised.
They say a person knows or at least gets a hunch before they’re gone for good. My father didn’t. He had numerous plans for that day and the next. I spoke to him the day before.
He was perfectly fine, until he wasn’t.
I got that call from one of my father’s friends. My mother didn’t have it in her to break it to me. It was a massive heart attack.
It’s not like everyone has a choice. Alone in my room some 4,000 miles away from home, I didn’t have an active choice to let grief take its due course - that would have to wait. What could not wait was looking for the earliest flight back home while I packed everything, knowing right then clear as day I wouldn’t be back, at least not in a while. I was the oldest child, so I had a younger sibling to take care of. And my mother deserved time to grieve while I handled the aftermath - death certificate, documentation, insurance, and so many other materialistic bullshit spewed at you as if you don’t have to process the loss of a whole human from your life.
Shit needed to be handled, so handle is what I did. I emailed my university that I wouldn’t be able to make it for a course final presentation. I notified my workplace that I won’t be able to make it for a meeting that day. I got to the airport and bought all the chocolates and cashews for my mom and my sibling because them having enough food in their system to survive the next few days was my biggest concern.
I made a to-do list during my flight, noting everything I need to take care of in my father’s absence.
I was so..aware.
I spoke to every immigration and security officer like a regular traveler. I thanked the air hostesses every single time they gave me something to eat. I even wished one of them saying, “Have a good day” before leaving the plane because she was kind enough to dim the lights around me and give me a paracetamol when my head was pounding.
I really went to the immigration officers, looked them dead in the eye, and asked them to make an exception so I could book another flight and get home faster without having to wait 8 hours in transit. They had no idea, but they relented in the end because I stood right in front of them waiting for an answer.
I was hyperaware since the minute I landed. I vividly remember holding my mom, not only because I wanted to shield her from her grief - but also from people - because it was the same day I realized most people have the EQ of a brick wall, especially when it comes to loss.
I hadn’t cried in front of people, not even when they took me to the morgue, all eyes on me.
People asked my mom about it. My mom asked me why I hadn’t cried.
It positively is not denial. But I don’t know. Sometimes, it’s still difficult to believe this is how things are. I never saw the light leave my father’s eyes - I never even got to feel his warmth for the last time. He was freezing cold in that horridly shallow freezer by the time I arrived.
And now, everything feels like a distant memory. Life feels a lot like before and after.

Looking to put an offer on a house listed at 600k.

- The house has a Solar PPA which started in 2021 and runs 25 years.
- Seller has the option of transferring to agreement to us, or prepaying the remaining 21 years (likely 30k or so). The PPA allows the home owner to buy the solar panels at year 5, but you get zero federal/state incentives and the "offer" is always insulting.
- We've asked the seller we would like them to pay off the PPA early so we don't have to deal with it, plus it prevents us from ever putting up solar ourselves to get the federal/state rebates, plus just deal with the panels on the house overall.
- Ask the seller to eat the entire cost?
- Offer to cover half and add 15k to the offer?
- Offer to cover a smaller portion since it's not really our burden we signed up for?
- Adjust the offer by 30k and just prepay ourselves once transferred?
