2024.05.21 17:45 ConsciousRun6137 Oswell E. Spencer; Resident Evil, Based On Real EL-ites
| There's nothing new under the Sun, & no coincidences in such things that follow; Oswell E. Spencer Coat of Arms " I was to become a god... creating a new world with an advanced race of human beings." Dr. Oswell E. Spencer, Earl Spencer (c.1923-2006) was an aristocratic British billionaire, virologist and eugenicist. One of the founders of Umbrella Pharmaceuticals, Lord Spencer was the CEO and President for its entire existence, which saw its expansion as the Umbrella Corporation over the 1980s as well as its bankruptcy in 2003. A cold, ruthless elitist and ambitious individual, Spencer mercilessly eliminated his rivals and gradually increased his power within the company, which he strictly controlled behind a veil of darkness. Spencer had a vision to remake the world and lead it into a new era, seeing the world's current state as self-destructive. He intended to use the research data accumulated from Bio Organic Weapons to carry his vision out and mould a utopia for mankind with himself as its ruler. Spencer was born into the prestigious Spencer family, considered for generations to be among the European elite. Growing up in his family's castle overlooking a cliff on the British coastline, the young heir to the Spencer fortune was given a wide-ranging education, and developed hobbies of art collecting and hunting as befitting of his status. Among his studies were classic literature, Early Modern humanist treatises, and the mid-20th century eugenics movement. His personal favourite was the Natural History Conspectus, a rare late Victorian encyclopaedia which chronicled a 34-year trek through Africa by British explorer Henry Travis. During Spencer's teenage years, Europe was plunged into the Second World War. Nothing is known of Spencer's life during this period of time, including whether or not he avoided conscription, though it is known his experience living during the war helped form his world views. By the 1950s, Spencer was a university student training to be a physician. There he became close friends with Edward Ashford and an older student, Dr. James Marcus. While taking a solo hiking trip in Eastern Europe, he became lost due to his inexperience in the unfamiliar terrain and collapsed on a snow-covered road. There, he was rescued by Miranda, the priestess and biologist of an isolated mountain village which worshipped the Black God. Taken in by Miranda as a protégé, Spencer learned about the Mold and its ability to mutate, assimilate and replicate lifeforms, which inspired him a means to achieve evolutionist goals. Although he enjoyed his time with Miranda and the vast biological knowledge he gained from her, the two held very different world views, as Miranda longed to revive her deceased daughter while Spencer wished to change the world. Consequently, Spencer decided to leave the village, but would continue to keep in touch with Miranda by writing to her. Returning to his university a changed man, Spencer became driven to replicate Miranda's achievements in his own way, as he deemed the Mold ineffective to achieving his goals. With the Cold War intensifying, Spencer began to view humanity as a race destined to fall, and believed that only through evolving mankind and attaining a superior moral code could this be averted. Though he lacked a means to accomplish this, he believed the answer lay within the emerging field of virology. Soon, Spencer formed a eugenics circle of likeminded scientists, including Marcus and Ashford, as well as Lord Beardsley and Lord Henry. Founding of Umbrella (1966-68) At the start of 1966, Spencer became engrossed once more in the Natural History Conspectus, having recalled an account about the Ndipaya, a West African tribe of skilled engineers whose rituals involved a magical flower which granted great power to those who could survive its poison. While Spencer was initially treated with appropriate scepticism due to allegations of yellow journalism on behalf of Travis, Marcus hypothesized that a virus could be naturally produced by the flower and mutate the consumer. This virus would theoretically hold great promise in eugenics, interesting the circle. In order to disprove or confirm the flower's significance, the three organized an expedition to West Africa to find it. While Spencer's involvement is uncertain, Marcus travelled to West Africa on a several month search for the Ndipaya with his protégé, Brandon Bailey, and returned by February 1967 with proof of the virus' existence, having isolated it within the Sonnentreppe flowers growing in the ruins of the Garden of the Sun. Soon after research began on the virus, the Swiss university that Marcus worked for ostracized him following allegations of falsified data, which itself led to the cessation of government grants to his projects. \13]) Spencer used this to his advantage and employed his charitable Spencer Foundation as a means of funding Marcus' research, on the condition that he operate within the Spencer Estate's lab and avoid contact with any scientist outside their circle. Understanding the foundation would not be able to fund the project in its entirety, Spencer approached the circle in March 1967 with a suggestion that they establish a pharmaceutical company in order to raise the necessary funds. Ashford and Marcus agreed to the project, despite an overall disinterest with Henry and Beardsley joining. Shortly afterward, Spencer informed his old teacher Miranda of the discovery of the Progenitor Virus, and decided to use the symbol that connected the Four Houses in her village as his company logo. Toward the end of the year, work concluded on a mansion built on Spencer's behalf in the Arklay Mountains, a massif in the American Midwest. The mansion itself was built atop limestone caverns which Spencer planned to use for the construction of an underground laboratory complex that would be hidden from public view. The biggest flaw in this construction project was that he chose a famous New York architect named George Trevor, known for surreal designs Spencer admired, to build it. Upon its completion, Spencer realized that Trevor knew all of the mansion's secrets, including the existence of an underground laboratory, and panicked. Spencer quickly made plans to dispose of Trevor, so that only he and his inner circle would know of the lab's existence. In November 1967, Spencer invited the entire Trevor family, including George, his wife Jessica, and 14-year-old daughter Lisa to the house to celebrate the completion of the mansion. Unbeknownst to the Trevor family, Spencer planned to use them all as test subjects in his Progenitor research. Due to a busy workload, George could not attend, but told Jessica and Lisa that he would join them at the house later. As soon as the two arrived on November 10, they were dragged away by Spencer's employees and taken into the underground caverns as human research subjects for the Progenitor Virus. Jessica died soon after infection, though Lisa survived with mutations. As George arrived at the mansion, he was captured just the same, but escaped from his room. He eventually fell victim to one of his own traps and died. Lisa was kept as a test subject and would finally die in 1998. At some point in the late 1960s, Spencer worked with another scientist who shared his eugenics ideals, Dr. Wesker. Believing that Progenitor would only be useful to mankind if they could be trusted with its powers, Spencer concluded that the genetically superior humans had to share his values to become the Übermenschen. Umbrella began abducting children with superior genes and intellect from around the world and raising them with access to the finest education that money could buy. Upon reaching adulthood, Umbrella would determine the cream of the crop and infect them. This highly classified project was dubbed the "Wesker Project", in the name of its leader. With Umbrella established, Spencer became increasingly paranoid that his friends would threaten his own eugenics project which he intended to steer towards making him a god in the new world order. Although he already controlled the project by 1967 when he secured Marcus' research, Spencer's paranoia escalated in 1968 while running Umbrella Pharmaceuticals. To procure more funding for their eugenics project, Umbrella entered a secret agreement with the United States military to produce biological weaponry and began further projects to create mutant virus strains for military use. The Umbrella founders each worked separately on what they dubbed the "t-Virus Project". Rather than perform his own research, Spencer left the Arklay Laboratory under the control of trusted executives and further worked with Lord Beardsley and Lord Henry. Marcus and Bailey continued to work on their own while Ashford worked alongside his son, Alexander, at their European home. With Progenitor cultures becoming too limited in number for large-scale research on the t-Virus Project, it became clear that Marcus and Bailey would have to travel to West Africa and secure more. Unlike the previous trek, Spencer instead hired mercenaries to force the Ndipaya off their land and secure the Garden of the Sun for Umbrella's own exclusive use. When news reached them about this success, Bailey was sent alone to cultivate the Progenitor samples at a lab built there, isolating him from Marcus. Marcus himself was given his own laboratory in the Arklay Mountains close to Spencer's own. The Umbrella Executive Training School served a dual role as both a laboratory for the t-Virus Project and as a boarding school for gifted children headhunted by the Spencer Foundation as promising new executive-scientists. The first true victim of Spencer's paranoia was Ashford, who would die from exposure to his primitive t-Virus strain in a staged lab accident. While his son Alexander was a scientist, he was trained in genetics rather than virology, and was consequently unable to continue his father's work. This left only Marcus as the main competitor to Spencer, and so efforts were taken to steal Marcus' data for the benefit of Arklay's Laboratory. Securing of Power (1977-98) In 1977, the Spencer Foundation headhunted Albert Wesker for a job at Umbrella after he acquired a doctorate in virology at just age 17. Sent to the executive training school, Spencer ensured that Wesker and a fellow student, William Birkin, would abuse Marcus' trust in them and steal his research data. At the end of the school year, Spencer ordered the school and lab to be shut down, cutting Marcus off from his research staff and the children he used as test-subjects. Wesker and Birkin were immediately assigned to the Arklay Laboratory to take over as its chief researchers and used their knowledge of Marcus' research to drastically alter the Arklay Laboratory's own t-Virus project. Despite Spencer's near-total control over Umbrella, his paranoia continued to find new victims as Umbrella expanded to the point of possessing its own paramilitary, the Umbrella Security Service. Marcus continued to perform his own dedicated research into the late 1980s, hoping to use this to his advantage in securing the support of the board of directors in taking over the company. With Marcus now an immediate threat, Spencer ordered a U.S.S. raid on the training school and he was gunned down in 1988 with Birkin and Wesker in order to steal more research data. That same year, he personally backed their proposals in acquiring a Nemesis α parasite from France's No.6 Laboratory. As Umbrella entered the 1990s, Spencer continued to take a direct role in the company's affairs despite his advancing age and confinement to a wheelchair. Beardley and Henry would both perish over the next decade with their research inherited by their respective children, Mylène and Christine, both of whom were child prodigies. Deeply interested in the newly discovered Golgotha Virus, which was being studied by Birkin and Christine in France, Spencer funded a new NEST facility in Raccoon City for the G-Virus Project. Although intrigued by the virus' potential use in eugenics, it was instead funded as another bio-weapon project for the US military. An alternative eugenics project was assigned to Dr. Alex Wesker, one of the Wesker Project subjects who Spencer became personally close to. Spencer awarded her with greater executive power through the construction of a laboratory at Sonido de Tortuga. He also developed a close relationship with Col. Sergei Vladimir, a Spetznaz officer whom the Soviet Union had used in a human cloning trial during the Afghan War. In exchange for handing his ten clones over for research on the fledgling Tyrant Project, Vladimir became a powerful asset in protecting Spencer's control over the company. End of Umbrella (1998-2003) In May 1998, the Arklay Laboratory was sabotaged by one of Dr. Marcus' creations, Queen Leech. Its entire staff was either killed or infected, and escaped B.O.W.s drew national attention in their killings of out-of-state hikers. As part of the X-Day contingency, Albert Wesker sent two elite law enforcement teams from S.T.A.R.S. to the mansion to investigate. However, unbeknownst to these S.T.A.R.S. officers, they were deliberately pitted against Arklay's escaped B.O.Ws for the purpose of collecting combat data. Wesker's own orders were fourfold: gather this combat data, salvage whatever research he could from the Arklay Lab, ensure the death of all S.T.A.R.S. members, and destroy the lab so the truth of Umbrella's responsibility could never get out. Spencer's right-hand man, Colonel Sergei Vladimir, was also sent in personally for the task of recovering an experimental Tyrant and Umbrella's U.M.F.-013 supercomputer. While Vladimir was successful, Wesker instead chose to fake his own death and hand the data over to a rival company, while several S.T.A.R.S. members escaped from the mansion intent on beginning a police investigation of Umbrella. In the immediate fallout, an executive named Morpheus D. Duvall was scapegoated for the containment failure and began a bioterror plot to steal the viral samples in vengeance. Publicly, the so-called "Mansion Incident" did not harm Umbrella, thanks to its influence over the local Raccoon City media, police, and local government. However, a combination of this incident, Albert Wesker's betrayal, and Spencer's own refusal to admit Dr. Birkin to his inner circle would be the trigger for Umbrella's downward spiral. Dr. Birkin, slighted by Spencer's rejection, dumped the t-Virus around Raccoon City in order to neutralize the other Umbrella facilities while he himself prepared to hand the G-Virus over to the US military, who were intent on starting their own bioweapons project, in exchange for protection. Spencer learned of Birkin's planned betrayal and sent Umbrella Security Services to take Birkin into custody and acquire the G-Virus. When Birkin refused to comply, an Umbrella soldier gunned him down and the team proceeded to take his suitcase, which contained all of his work, with them. However, the fatally wounded Birkin still had one G-Virus sample left in his possession and used it on himself, mutating into a powerful monster in the process. The now mutated Dr. Birkin pursued Umbrella's soldiers into the sewers and slaughtered most of them, although HUNK survived. This altercation accidentally caused several t-Virus samples to fall to the floor and break, and infected rats would soon spread the virus into the city's water supply. Over the next week, the city collapsed into anarchy as thousands of infected took part in cannibalistic murders. Aware that Raccoon City was doomed and the company no longer capable of lobbying against a Senate committee action, Spencer ordered Colonel Sergei Vladimir to recover the U.M.F.-013 from Raccoon City and take it to a safe location. On October 1, 1998, Spencer awoke to news of the US President's bombing of the city. By this point, Umbrella's responsibility had become public knowledge, and the US Congress voted in an act to liquidate Umbrella's USA branch and ban the company from conducting any future business in the country. In 1999, Spencer assembled expert lawyers, fake witnesses, and bribes during the Raccoon Trials to divert all responsibility to the US government. He also purchased an abandoned chemical plant in the Caucasus region of Southern Russia and commissioned the construction of a secret underground laboratory, which would become the de facto base of operations for Umbrella. Unwilling to acknowledge their breaching of international law to obtain bioweaponry or even acknowledge B.O.W.s in general, the US government remained in a stalemate with Umbrella. This stalemate ended in early 2003 when Albert Wesker leaked excerpts of the recovered U.M.F.-013 data to the court. Umbrella was found liable for damages and subsequently bankrupted. An international arrest warrant on Spencer was filed by both the United States and Russian Federation. Spencer, now an international fugitive, secluded himself in his family estate where he would spend the remaining years of his life. Final Years (2003-2006) Intent on establishing a future successor to Umbrella, Spencer was obsessive in maintaining what little order he had left. Right after the Raccoon City bombing in November 1998, he ordered a purge of senior executive staff to prevent the United States from ever learning about Progenitor. Over the next few years, he had little to no contact with the outside, seen only by his loyalist bodyguards and his butler, Patrick. His increasingly erratic behavior coincided with his depression and failing health. However, intent on surviving long enough to see the rebirth of his organization, Spencer ordered Alex Wesker to begin research into a mutagenic virus capable of restoring his youth and supplied her with funding, equipment, research material, several hundred test subjects, and the research facility on Sonido de Tortuga Island to this end. Alex herself had no love for Spencer and betrayed him, disappearing after she gave up on the project and taking the results, her subordinates, and the test subjects to Sein Island in the Baltic Sea. By 2006, Spencer was close to death. He lacked the strength to eat solid foods and spent most of his days sitting in his study. In a desperate last effort to survive, he ordered Patrick to assist him in the development of a new virus by using test subjects confined beneath the Spencer Estate in the hopes of healing his body. As these experiments led to several failed mutations, Spencer realized that his death was inevitable. He conceded that he would never realize his plan himself and enlisted Patrick to leak information on his location to Albert Wesker through an associate. Spencer then dismissed Patrick from his duties and was left with only his bodyguards at the estate, waiting for Wesker to find him. In August 2006, Wesker entered the castle and brutally murdered Spencer's guards before heading into Spencer's private office. In their meeting, Spencer explained the Wesker Project to him, and why he himself was infected with a Progenitor virus strain*.* However, Spencer lied when he claimed he was the sole survivor of the Wesker Project, probably in order to keep him focused on his goal and prevent him from pursuing Alex. In general, Wesker was disinterested in Spencer's vision and, while not expecting this frail old man to be much competition to own goals, nevertheless decided to tie him up as a loose end. He brutally killed Spencer by knife-handing him through the chest, proclaiming that Spencer was not capable of being a god and, as such, never had the right to aspire to that goal. Even before his death, Spencer left a dark legacy through the viral research that he conducted throughout his life that would plague the world with large-scale dissemination of bioterrorism. Due to his negligence in not being able to deal directly with the constant leaks and desertions of his dishonest employees during Umbrella's final years, this allowed them to start selling B.O.W.s to their rivals in the Bio-weapons black market since 1998 which culminated in the proliferation of countless outbreaks around the planet during the first decade of the 21st century, causing the deaths of thousands of people as a result. 2024.05.21 15:52 figure_sk8 Safe House (GMMTV) Day 3, Part 2/2 Summary/Rough Translation [Potential Spoilers]
Video Link:
https://www.youtube.com/live/cjn8w8j06ik?feature=shared - They're having a jam session when we join
- 3:45 Neo and Luke are improvising a song about all the guys. I'll just translate the lyrics that Luke sings in Thai because he also sings in English a bit too. When you hear Neo talking/singing, he's trying to translate what Luke is singing, but sometimes he's a little off.
- Mix: "can be good but also bad. Likes to eat a lot with Pond"
- Phuwin: (sings in English)
- Pond: (sings in English) "Everyone knows that he always wants to eat rice with Thai omelette (extra salty)"
- Neo: "He's probably the most annoying in the house, but he's also cute. He loves annoying everyone a lot, especially Earth. That's the kind of person he is. He plays guitar really well."
- Khaotung: "I like how he likes similar things as me. I like how he plays darts with me. I like how he also wins games like me."
- (pause while they laugh)
- 6:30 Earth: "Everyone who's watching this livestream knows that he likes to wear this red sweatshirt." (pause because Neo needs to think of what to play) "Red shirt, red shirt, has nice stuff in his hair" (then sings in English) (pause because of Neo's mistranslation) "Actually, he should be the best in the house, but right now he has the lowest score. But that's alright, because there's lots of time for him to win more games."
- Gun: "Yellow shirt, like the Sang Sang that he's the presenter of. He's really tiny, but his smile is huge. He's also very good-looking and the nicest in the house" (then Luke says something a bit funny but rude, which makes Gun get up and try to push a pillow in Luke's face)
- 9:50 Mix and Gun go to the kitchen. The others realise that they can watch the footage of the kitchen from the TV.
- 10:45 Neo and Khaotung consider improvising a song for Luke since he didn't get to sing about himself, but Luke declines.
- 12:15 PD asks everyone to assemble in the kitchen. She makes a notification sound before speaking so that the guys don't get startled, which they appreciate
- 13:20 Medal competition sponsored by Sea Me Now. Gun reads the rules. They will divide themselves into two teams. Each team will send two members to prepare "yum" (a type of Thai salad served at room temperature, often involving some kind of noodles like glass noodles) within 15 minutes, using the seafood from Sea Me Now. Meanwhile, the remaining 4 guys will wait in another room until the dishes are ready, and they will come and blindly taste the dishes and vote on which dish is better. Winning team gets one medal each.
- 16:00 PD asks the teams which member each thinks is the best cook in the team. Phuwin is the best of the left team, and the right-hand team are undecided between Gun and Khaotung. At 17:30 PD asks which member from each group is the worst at cooking. The guys start to figure out that PD is going to pair the best cook with the worst cook, so the right-hand team try to blag that Khaotung and Gun don't know how to cook that well after all. At 18:30, Neo is the only one who hasn't caught on to PD's plan, so he raises his hand to indicate that he's the worst cook on that team because he thinks it means he won't have to cook. Final cooking teams are Phuwin/Neo and Gun/Pond. The rest go to wait in the play zone.
- 21:00 Phuwin has only just realised that they are required to make "yum," which he doesn't know how to make. He mistakenly thought they could make whatever they wanted. Gun is also not confident.
- 23:00 Cooking timer begins. Both teams decide to use the salmon. Phuwin/Neo decide they're going to leave their salmon raw. Pond asks Gun if they're going to leave theirs raw too, and Phuwin accuses him of copying them. Gun decides they're going to lightly blanch their salmon.
- 28:00 Neo goes to look for a food processor. Gun asks if he can process enough chilis for both teams, and Neo initially jokingly declines, but then agrees.
- 30:15 Phuwin asks Neo to make the glass noodles. Neo isn't sure how to prepare them, and Phuwin guesses that they're supposed to just put them briefly in boiling water (which is correct)
- 31:30 We cut to the play zone where the tasting teams do a light brand plug for Sea Me Now. They teach Luke a new word that basically means "great." (I guess it's kind of like "sick" in English how the actual definition of the word is different, but it's slang when used in context). Mix is confident that Gun/Pond are going to make the better dish.
- 37:00 PD announces one minute remaining, and that "the customers are complaining." Gun/Pond finish with some time to spare and present their dish to the camera, but Phuwin/Neo finish a little late (but it's fine; there will be no penalty. PD just keeps rushing them to finish)
- 40:30 PD asks the teams to write the names of their respective dishes on the mini boards provided. Pond originally writes a name that indirectly reveals that he and Gun made that dish, and PD says that the names can't have any hints of who made which dish.
- 43:30 PD asks the teams to pose with their respective dishes, and invites the audience to screenshot and caption them. Gun/Pond's dish translates to, "Definitely delicious; try it and see," and Phuwin/Neo's dish (roughly) translates to, "Just making a 'yum,' but don't know how to make it" (It's a rhyme/pun in Thai)
- 44:30 Cooking teams leave the kitchen and go sit in the living room so they can watch the tasting on the TV. PD warns them not to cheat while the teams are changing rooms.
- 47:15, the tasting team goes to the kitchen. They each get 3 ping pong balls with which they can vote. Phuwin/Neo's dish is the white side, and Gun/Pond's is the blue side. The votes can be cast by dropping the balls into the coloured containers corresponding to the dishes.
- 48:00 It is immediately obvious to all of them immediately which team made which dish. Transcription starting from 48:20:
- Earth: "Why don't we start by judging the presentation before we taste?"
- Mix: "Looking at these two dishes, this one (blue) is definitely wins."
- Earth (trying to help his team): "I think I'm going to go with this one (white). Listen, none of us know which dish was made by which team..."
- Luke: "But we have theories."
- Mix: "I just want to know in what way this (white) dish could possibly be more beautiful than that (blue) dish."
- (pause while they think of some nonsense) Luke: "The vegetables. They just look so nice. And there are so many of them."
- Earth: "I'm giving it to this team (white)."
- Luke: "Me too."
- (audio cuts out for a few seconds)
- Mix is saying "The truth?!" to implore Earth and Luke to admit the truth, but they stick to their decisions
- Luke: "It's my personal opinion. I'm not changing."
- 49:55 Mix comes up to the camera and mouths, "There are cheaters here."
- Earth and Luke say, "Who knows? This plate could have been made by anyone."
- 50:15 Mix: "Okay, let's move on to the flavour." They taste Phuwin/Neo's first.
- Earth: "I hear laughing outside. Who's laughing?"
- 51:00 Luke: "Very good."
- Earth looks at Luke. Luke: "It's actually good. It suits my palate."
- Mix: "I mean, it's alright. It's not bad. The salmon and imitation crab are good. They taste really fresh. But the noodles are awkwardly super cold. Like, is this bamee yen (a cold noodle dish)? Also, there's just something not right. It's sour, and it's like trying to be spicy but not spicy, trying to be salty but not salty. It's not balanced. What do you think, Earth?"
- Earth: "I'll give it to you honestly."
- Mix: (puts his hand on Earth's shoulder and looks into his eyes) "Yes, give it to us honestly."
- Earth: "Okay, honestly, I like the raw ingredients. I like that the imitation crab meat is in large chunks. But..."
- Mix: "Look, he's talking about the raw ingredients. He's not even talking about the flavour of the dish."
- Earth: "The flavour is like how Mix described. And honestly, it's sour. It's so sour. Uncomfortably sour. Like, too sour. Can I have some water?"
- 52:40 Luke: "I really like how there are lots of vegetables here. That means that dish is really healthy for you. If you ask me if I can eat the other dish, I can eat it, but it won't be as healthy as this dish."
- Earth: "Oh, okay, so he's talking about the health value of the dish."
- Mix: "But we're talking about the flavour of the dish, here, no?"
- Luke: "I'm a person who doesn't like eating things too spicy. (uses the vocab word he learned earlier) So I like that this one is a good balance. It's not too spicy for me.
- 53:35 Earth looks at Luke and says, "Is it not too sour? I think you've already helped our team a lot here."
- Luke: "No, I don't think so. I honestly think it's good. But we haven't tried the other dish."
- Earth: "That's true. Different people have different flavour preferences. Some like super sour, for example. And if those people also don't like spicy food, this dish is for them."
- 54:05 They ask for Khaotung's review. He pauses and then quietly says, "Um... Sour. It's sour."
- Mix: "How about between the words 'delicious' and 'not delicious'?"
- Khaotung: "Well, I can definitely eat it. But it's super sour. It's not well-rounded."
- 54:35 They move on to taste Gun/Pond's dish. Mix comes to the camera and enthusiastically whispers, "It's SO good!"
- 55:15 Earth: "I like the creativity of this team. The salmon was raw, but this team lightly blanched the fish so that the inside is still raw, which adds a lot of layers to the flavours and textures of the dish. I like it."
- Mix: "Can I speak extendedly? It's SO good. It's amazing. It's well-rounded, yummy, the textures are amazing, and it's easy to see that the person who made it really knows how to cook. I'm pretty sure I know who made it." Khaotung agrees.
- 56:40 Luke decides to still vote for the white dish because the second dish is a bit too spicy for him. Earth sees that there's no way that the white dish can win anymore, so he puts his last ball into the white container anyway.
- 58:00 More brand plugging for Sea Me Now
- 59:45 PD calls the cooking teams back to the kitchen to announce the results.
- 1:00:35 Luke says to Phuwin/Neo: "I tried, guys." Neo says, "I love this guy. He said the truth straight from his heart." Earth says that he tried to say the truth too. Neo complains that he was working with so many ingredients he had no idea how to use. I was just putting everything in randomly. Mix asks who did the seasoning/flavouring, and Neo said, "Me, but we didn't have time to taste it because we ran out of time."
- 1:02:00 The cooking teams try each other's dishes (and Phuwin/Neo try their own dish for the first time too). Neo tries Gun/Pond's dish. Earth immediately feeds him a huge bite of his own dish. Neo pauses and says, "It seems like it's missing something." Mix and Earth say, "Not something. Many things. Like deliciousness." Earth feeds some to Phuwin, and he also doesn't like it.
- 1:02:45 Neo looks at Earth and says, "You did the right thing." (in reference to criticising this dish and voting for the other one). Earth says, "So you understand me now?!"
- Neo makes fun of how Gun was previously dramatic about not knowing how to make "yum." Gun says that he truly wasn't sure, and Neo feeds Gun some of Phuwin/Neo's dish saying, "See? This is what it means to truly not know what you're doing." Gun's eyes water while eating it, and he says, "It's so sour," and goes to hug Neo and Phuwin.
- 1:04:00 More brand plugging for Sea Me Now
- 1:05:00 Neo says that he's glad that there's at least someone (Luke) who enjoys eating his food. He then realises that Luke has only been eating the seafood and the vegetables, none of which have been flavoured/seasoned. Luke then takes a bite of the noodles to appease him.
- 1:06:00 Seafood lunch. Menu includes (professionally-made) "yum" with salmon and imitation crab topped with salmon roe; oysters with a seafood sauce; scallops fried with garlic, salt, and pepper; and grilled salmon steaks
- 1:17:45 Khaotung and Mix go to the kitchen to make some more food with the fresh seafood they have
- 1:19:15 Luke asks Earth why he's sitting so far away from him, and Neo turns it into a pun about Earth wanting scissors ("sitting far away" sounds a bit similar to "looking for scissors")
- 1:21:10 This is Pond's first time trying mashed potatoes. Luke and Phuwin explain what they are to him and explain that in some Western countries, they eat less rice than they do in Asia, so sometimes they eat potatoes as the starch (a lot of the dishes for this meal were prepared in a Western way)
- 1:22:30 Neo teaches them Isan slang that a more polite phrase to basically say, "BS-ing." They also mention the Central equivalent of the phrase. They ask Luke what an equivalent in English would be, but Luke can only think of "BS-ing," so he says that he can't say it out loud. He eventually goes with "spinning stuff." Neo says that he feels like English doesn't have as many rude/swearing words as Thai does, and Earth makes a joke that he wouldn't be surprised if Neo's name was rude in English.
- 1:23:55 They like how Luke seems especially giggly today, so they try to keep him laughing. Neo says a Thai phrase/idiom that basically means that he's not even being funny to his full capacity right now, then Earth and Phuwin give some sarcastic remarks that are like playful insults to Neo, which Luke continues laughing at.
- 1:26:00 Phuwin and Gun join Mix and Khaotung in the kitchen to cook some more seafood. They're prepping some salmon, scallops, and oysters. Gun wants to make lightly floured and pan-fried tofu.
- 1:27:30 The guys at the table are joking to Luke that it's Thai culture to be polite to people, but then the closer you get to them, the more you insult them. You start the insults behind their back, but then you can eventually insult them to their face (it's not technically false, especially for some friend groups, but the way they were explaining it is a bit too much, hahaha). Then they demonstrate that, actually, the best thing to do is to be polite to someone's face, and then behind their back, you compliment them again.
- 1:29:00 They exchange the English and Thai versions of the phrase "fishing for compliments"
- 1:32:20 Luke is trying to tell the story of why he came to Thailand, but he's still in his giggly mood. He wanted to be an actor in the US, but he was scouted from IG to come and be a model in Thailand, so he arranged to come for 3 months, but he liked it, so he stayed.
- 1:34:10 They mention that they're glad they have Neo in the house because otherwise it would be so much quieter and less entertaining.
- 1:40:15 Gun brings the tofu for the guys at the table to try. They struggle a bit because it's still very hot, but they approve.
- 1:43:45 The guys at the table talk about ventriloquists. Luke explains how in the US, ventriloquism can either be creepy or funny depending on the act, but in Thailand it tends to mostly be creepy. They start discussing some related film/series plots.
- 1:59:30 Pond, Neo, and Luke dance a bit for the cameras
- 2:01:00 Relaxing time. Mix presents the dish he made to the camera: spaghetti pad kee mao (drunken noodles) with scallops, crab, and salmon roe. He brings it to the living room for everyone else to try.
- 2:08:40 Some language lessons. Phuwin and Luke ask Neo some questions for him to answer in English. They also ask Luke some questions in Thai. They try to ask Neo and Luke to speak English and Thai (respectively) for two minutes each, language exam-style.
- 2:13:50 PD asks the losing team from the last game to go wash dishes. They say that the sink area is small, so two people will wash at a time.
- 2:36:05 Earth drops and breaks a dish. Earth tells a story about how when he was very young, he hated washing dishes, so sometimes he would secretly break some dirty dishes behind his house so he wouldn't have to clean as many. Eventually his mother started wondering where all the dishes were disappearing to, but she just kept buying more
- 2:41:15 PD asks for someone to wake Gun (who's napping on the sofa) and assemble in the area in front of the medal board for the next medal game. She asks Mix "the one with many medals" and Earth "the one with hardly any medals" to take the lead in reading the rules. Earth is offended, but PD says, "Earth, you have to accept the truth."
- 2:42:40 Game sponsored by Super Coffee. They will divide into two teams. King of the Day chooses the pairs that will compete together. Each person in the pair will wear a sumo costume with a bag of Super Coffee attached to their back. Whoever is the first to successfully remove the bag of coffee from their opponent's back wins that round, and their team is awarded one point in the game. Once all the pairs have competed, the winners will compete to determine the final winner. Winning team gets one medal each. The rules say nothing about singing or having dancing breaks during each match, but the guys do so anyway.
- 3:21:20 PD asks everyone to change into swimming clothes and meet at the pool. Phuwin has to study, so he won't join for the next activity.
- 3:39:00 Neo reads the directions. They're going to play the Werewolf (ma paa) game. Between the 7 of them, they will randomly get assigned roles: 2 werewolves (who can kill people), 1 bodyguard (who can choose someone to protect from death each round), 1 seer (who can privately uncover the identity of one other player each round), 1 hunter (who, if they are killed, can choose one other person they suspect of being a werewolf to die with them), and 2 villagers. PD will be the narratoreferee. The game is basically between the werewolves and everyone else. Each round, in order, the narrator will instruct the werewolves to choose someone to kill, then the bodyguard to choose someone to protect, then the seer to privately uncover the identity of one other player. Then everyone must talk and decide on one person to kill out of suspicion of being a werewolf. If both werewolves are killed, the common people win. If there's at least one werewolf left at the end of the game, the werewolves win.
- [PD is a very dramatic and colourful narrator, which is why everyone is reacting to most of her lines throughout the game. Werewolf in Thai is "ma paa" and villagetownsperson is "chao baan," to help you guys understand what's going on. All the other roles are called in English, although sometimes they call the bodyguard "moh" which means doctor]
- 3:45:30 First game: Werewolves=Gun/Earth, Bodyguard=Neo, Seer=Khaotung, Hunter=Mix
- First round: No one dies
- Second round: Pond dies. They vote to kill Khaotung
- 4:04:45 Third round: No one dies. Neo says that Mix is a common person because he saved this round. They vote to kill Earth
- 4:13:30 Fourth round: Neo dies. They vote to kill Gun. Common people win.
- 4:19:00 Second game. They're no longer allowed to say whether they saved someone or not. Werewolves=Khaotung/Mix, Bodyguard=Gun, Seer=Luke, Hunter=Pond
- First round: Earth dies. They know someone is lying because too many people are claiming to be villagers. They think they should believe Neo because he was so honest last round. They vote to kill Khaotung.
- 4:34:10 Second round: Pond dies and choses to kill Mix with him. Common people win.
- 4:37:50 PD asks them to vote on the best and worst liar. They aren't sure yet, but Khaotung is voted the worst liar. Punishment is cleaning one of the bathrooms tomorrow.
- 4:41:15 Relaxing time. Neo gets thrown in the pool.
- 5:08:00 Fan talk
- Group 1: It's supposed to be the 4 top scorers on the medal board, but Khaotung is still showering, so Earth goes in his place because he's lowest. Neo did a bit more exercise with Luke this morning. They recap the walking doll game from the morning and how random and unpredictable it was. Mix was bitter that he felt like being King today was more of a burden than Luke's experience the previous day. Luke says it's probably because Mix's Thai is better, so they felt like using him for more jobs/tasks. They recap the cooking competition; Gun/Mix say they were lucky that they were on the team that had several options of people who knew how to cook. They talked about how the judging was biased, but Earth said that at the end, he had to admit the fact that Phuwin/Neo's dish was so sour that he could feel it in his brain. Gun/Mix were glad that they didn't have to wash dishes today because there were so many dishes to wash, and they made fun of Earth breaking the dish. They all enjoyed the sumo game. They started to regret that they started the singing/dancing gag, but they committed to it for entertainment purposes. They agreed that Khaotung is indeed the dark horse because no one expected him to be that quick in the sumo game. Everyone also had fun playing Werewolf.
- 5:18:45 Fan comments: They like how Gun seems like the eldest brother in the house, taking care of everyone. People made fun of Earth's childhood dish-breaking story. (The guys eventually start talking amongst themselves, mainly about how Earth doesn't think he has a chance to win anymore, and they say that there are many more opportunities for medals in the coming days, so anything can happen)
- 5:26:15 Group 2: They talk about how much Pond likes rice with Thai omelette [note: pretty much everyone in Thailand loves it, but Pond feels like eating it all the time], and he likes to make Phuwin make it for him in this house. They're all impressed with how good Khaotung was at the sumo game. Phuwin/Neo explain what happened during the cooking competition: Phuwin usually never eats "yum," but last week, his family made some but he didn't have any, so he regrets not having it so he would have a better idea of how to make it. Neo said he was just randomly putting things in without knowing for sure if they were supposed to go in. They made fun of Neo's dishwashing "technique." They recapped Werewolf, and everyone was unsure whether to trust/believe the things Neo says because he talks rubbish a lot.
- 5:32:45 Fan comments: They mention that this has turned into a pure comedy show. They like how everyone works together and the vibe isn't overly competitive.
- 5:37:00 Late-night meal. Menu includes fried chicken wings, spaghetti carbonara, spaghetti with bacon, sticky rice with pork, sandwich, pizza, more spaghetti, and minced pork wrapped with noodles.
- They feel like today was very full/busy, and they're all feeling tired, but they've had fun.
- 5:47:00 Earth and Neo say that they may not have many medals, but at least they're funny. They get up and try to entertain the rest of the guys.
- 5:52:45 Everyone bids farewell to Gun because it's his last night. Gun says to the audience, "Thank you so much for watching all of us these past three days. I hope you've enjoyed seeing our dynamics in this more relaxed environment. I hope you'll continue watching the rest of the guys for the rest of the days and see what fun is in store."

2024.05.21 11:48 im_just_called_lucy NTAs, explain the rationale behind nominating Love Island TWICE but snubbing Civilian BB in favour of the celebrity version!
| Don’t get me wrong, I’m happy CBB have been nominated on the long list (voting is free and available on the NTAs website) BUT why not nominate the 2023 civilian series too? You know, the one that the fans enjoyed more and had really good viewership. Heck, at last year’s ceremony BB had a segment with AJ & Will hosting an award and the theme tune playing. I’m sad we won’t get a final 5 red carpet moment (especially for the fans that did pay to get red carpet tickets for the hope of meeting the cast on the carpet) BUT I do hope Jordan and Henry will be invited to present an award considering they are expected to have good careers in TV & media (Jordan hinted at a Classic FM gig & they’ve said there’s meetings involved for tv shows or podcasts) and they were probably a more lasting, exciting couple than that year’s Love Island couples. Award presenters tend to not be nominees a lot of the time so I am hoping they have been invited to present something, have a cute red carpet moment and get the chance to shine. submitted by im_just_called_lucy to bigbrotheruk [link] [comments] |

2024.05.21 08:49 panicjames I'm James Read, food writer, microbe-wrangler and professional fermenter. I wrote Of Cabbages & Kimchi (out today in the USA), and I'm back for another AMA!
Hello again
/Cooking! My name's James and I like getting microbes to cook for me. My book,
Of Cabbages & Kimchi: A Practical Guide to the World of Fermented Food came out
today last year (but is out in the
USA today!).
OK, so this is my second rodeo, because I already did an
AMA back then, but I
REALLY loved all your brilliant questions about obscure ferments, burlesque operas and kahm yeast so I'm back and
ready (edit: not actually ready but will be at 3pm GMT/10am EDT) to answer your questions.
So, since last year I have:
- Bound a copy of my book in kombucha (video + photo)
- Been nominated for 3 food book awards (Fortnum & Mason, André Simon, Guild of Food Writers)
- Published my first paper (mum look, I'm peer-reviewed!) for Oxford University Press (currently open-access) featuring KNT-triangles, the femininisation of yogurt, and loads of references
- Been generously invited to do a load of IRL talks and demos, including one where I made tepache in the middle of a field in Wiltshire.
A bit about the book: I've written a book all about fermented foods, covering sauerkraut, hot sauce, kimchi, soy sauce, vinegar, kvass, kefir, kombucha, tepache and yogurt. It's full of stories about the surprising history and microbial wonder of fermentation, alongside over sixty recipes ranging from from sauerkraut pierogi to soy sauce caramel dark milk chocolate tart and fig & fennel seed kombucha to kefir panna cotta with orange blossom and thyme, and is packed with some
truly beautiful gastro-surrealist illustrations from
Marija Tiurina.
A bit about writing it: I wrote the book partially through lockdown, which made visiting the library for research a little trickier. A lot of the best sources I found weren't in English (and occasionally weren't even in modern languages - shout out to Walther Ryff for the first reference to sauerkraut in Middle High German). I found fermentation absolutely everywhere once I started looking, from 8,000 year-old burial sites to the HMS Endeavour and International Space Station. I stumbled across Russian kvass adverts on Youtube featuring
Gene Simmons and Michael Jackson impersonators, and discovered that those miniature Tabasco sauce bottles were originally created as an interval giveaway for an opera.
Some nice things people said about it: "A fantastically thorough introductory guide to the wild wonderland of fermentation, with imagery that would make Lewis Carroll proud"
David Zilber, co-author of The Noma Guide to Fermentation
"One of the most user-friendly fermented food books out there"
Nigel Slater
"Lovely... delightful... enchanting"
Nigella Lawson
Very kind of them.
If you're interested, do please buy the book from one of my lovely US stockists:

2024.05.21 03:35 necro-asylum DAE parent’s have sky high expectations but offer no support to reach them?
I’m an eldest daughter from a mixed cultural background for context so… yeah.
I swear to god the second I was born my parents wanted me to be a surgeon or a doctor. I was bought science books, science themed everything as gifts etc etc. Basically forced to be a geek before I even reached school age (nothing wrong with geeks at all I still am one now hehe.) I was also forced to play violin and do classical singing and they’d constantly tell me when I reached 18 I need to join the cities symphony orchestra. So a doctor and a classical maestro….. right…
I actually had an interest in disease from a youngish age so I did eventually want to go to medical school or do a stem degree so that kept them happy but every week somewhere in convo me becoming a doctor would be brought up. My mum would also constantly make me perform music for her friends which embarrassed tf out of me.
So awesome! Parents who wanna see their kids succeed right? So what did they do to help me go to medical school?
Tutoring? No. Too expensive even when I requested extra help for maths (my weakness) my mum told me I am not getting it because I have shitty focus and it’s a waste of money.
Good grades? I got those. When I didn’t I was beaten or not allowed to eat dinner. Nevermind they never took interest in any of my schoolwork. I was expected to just do well regardlesss. My GC sister would get 20 bucks for every grade she got over a C+.
A home environment conducive for studying? With all the yelling and constant drinking and physical violence my home life was very hard to Be in. But I wasn’t allowed outside on school nights so going to a library or my friend’s house was out of the question. I really struggled to focus when my mum would burst into my room every night to yell at me for leaving a cup in the sink.
Volunteering? My parents made it known they thought I was irresponsible and stupid(??) and would never take me to anything I wanted to participate in for college credit. I didn’t even bother asking after the first few times. I’d taken interest in going on a trip to Africa to shadow a midwife for a couple weeks using money I’d saved from my cashier job and my aunt and thought this was a wonderful opportunity. My racist ass mum wouldn’t let me go because she didn’t want African men “giving me aids” which I just… I feel nauseous even typing that. I was 15.
Mental health support? A psych told my parents it was highly likely I had inattentive ADHD when I was young and instead of seeking further help which I’m sure would have been beneficial my mum decided from her expert peer reviewed research of speaking to her MLM sales friend that my behaviour of sometimes submitting homework late and dawdling in the shower was because of my diet and suddenly lactose and sugar were banned and I had to have these shake things every morning. It did nothing btw. My dad also told me he didn’t believe in that stuff and I was just not exercising enough… yeah because I wasn’t allowed to leave the house lmao.
During my exams years (11&12) my parents went through an incredibly messy divorce which obviously was hard. My dad was given custody because my mum made like 0 money and because of his work schedule and hobbies I had to feed, drive and do chores for my younger sister who really took the divorce hard. She slept in my room most nights. Despite this I somehow managed to keep my grades decent enough to where I was invited to interview for a pre-medical program in another state. My parents wouldn’t pay for flights so I couldn’t go. I applied for a biomedical science degree in my state and got accepted and decided to go there instead. The minute I got the acceptance letter my parents were pressuring me to move out (16) and so I did. No help in any way shape or form I moved 4 hours away. For years they constantly shamed me and called me lazy whenever I brought up my studies because it wasn’t medicine. I said it Wasn’t too late to attend medical school it was just far too expensive for me to pay for (we don’t do loans in my country) and they just shrugged.
I haven’t talked to them in nearly a decade and this still grinds me. How the hell did they expect me to get into medical school and go with no money and no support of any kind (emotional, physical etc.) and then shame me for not going.
Nothing I ever achieved was good enough. My classical music got me many awards and they would still put immense pressure to the point where as soon as I could I quit. I got diagnosed with ADHD last year and have since been medicated and man.. the difference in my focus is night and day. I feel it’s important to note neither of my parents even finished high school lol.
DAE experience the pressure to be a prodigy with no parental guidance?

2024.05.20 22:59 TrickyGhost99 [Online][5E][Saturday 9 AM PST][LGBTQ+] Looking for 3-5 players for a casual fantasy road trip!
EDIT: CLOSED. Thank you for the responses everyone!
Howdy, name's Tricky (31, they/them), I'm a relatively new DM looking for three to five players for a moderately long campaign (ideally 25-30 sessions, but last time I tried to guesstimate I was wildly off, so who knows.)
The vibe is going to be overall low stakes (you're not going to be out there saving the kingdom,) and generally light-hearted, with an air of adventure and some very mild horror elements for tension. Not outright comedic per se, but
definitely not a super-serious affair.
We'd be playing
Saturday mornings weekly starting at around
9:00 AM PST (12 PM EST, 5 PM GMT) and going for approximately 4 hours a session (with a 10-15 minute break about midway through.) Voice would be over Discord. VTT (if any) to be determined, but probably nothing fancy.
PREMISE: Tonight is the night of Riversmeet's annual hibernal ball, held each year on the winter solstice. Taking place on the grounds of renowned sculptor Lea Wenderford's estate, it's part carnival, part costume party, all merriment. There's dancing, performers, games of skill, games of chance, and a banquet where the food (and the booze, let's be real here,) never seems to end. It is
the way to spend this longest night, and anyone who's anyone has been offered a chance to join the festivities.
You might have been invited, or were someone's plus-one. Perhaps you got your invite by begging, bartering, or, er, "borrowing." Perhaps you're here as staff or entertainers. Or maybe you just have no need for something so simple as an
invitation to get where you want to be...
However you've found yourself here, though, something will be dropped in your lap that is going to sharply turn the immediate trajectory of your life towards the weirdness that permeates the region. And to deal with it, you're going to have to on a bit of a trek...
So if you're interested in a little fantasy road trip through a homebrew world and can reasonably make a commitment to that time slot for several months, go ahead and fill out the linked survey!

Our contest
Grab Life by the Balls has concluded, and the level of competition has certainly evolved with this competition! From the earliest days of this challenge, we've seen all sorts of competing strains of
P. b. artifex try and make the best use of the limited user-resources available in our subreddit Petri dish. From flagella-flung fan-favorites to cilia-catapulted comic creations, the 18 specially crafted, genetically-modified strains have had to race to the top. After all, there's only so much room in this Petri dish, so only one of the strains can make it to the top and propagate itself across the environment to become endemic. While we've seen many twists and turns from the near-Brownian paths these strains have tried to take to the top, the race at the final stretch certainly has a story to tell: those Hussar Wing mutations you get from UV light exposure at the top ain't all they're cracked up to be - use them to fly as you may, just don't fly so far up that the radiation sterilizes you completely. That's the end of the road, after all, and you would just end up as a carcass for scavenger species to feast upon, failing in your quest of survival of the fittest.

2024.05.20 19:27 No-Possibility6911 Could someone use Game Theory Principles in the mobile game “Monopoly Go!“?
Firstly I would like to clarify that I know that “Game Theory” as a study is not the study of games. But events that occur in the game, “Monopoly Go!”, occur in such a way that if you don’t personally know the people that you’ve partnered up with, you cannot communicate with that and each player is allowed four separate partnerships.
The Event: each player is allowed to invite and join into any partnership they choose. They are then given the opportunity to begin collecting tokens. These tokens serve as an input to a wheel which spins in an apparent random motion and outputs various values. The more token the player has, the higher total spins they can accumulate. (This is a very base explanation because I don’t want to explain how the game works) as you accumulate totals, the partnership earns prizes for each milestone reached, the milestones for prizes increase in distance proportionally to the value of the total spins. And the prizes increase in value as you progress through this event.
Tokens can be won in quick wins: mini games or little “side quests”. They can also be landed on and collected but at a low multiplier, the dice won’t collect too much so to collect a substantial amount you need to have a lot of dice. You get dice from awards like completing your board or a friend could give you a few (that process is random) and you can increase your net worth to get rewards that may include dice, or money which could be used to complete the board and get more dice. But it is a scarce resource, and a valuable one.
There definitely is a Nash equilibrium allocation of resources (money, dice and tokens) among the factors (boards (properties), rolls, partnerships) to maximise the return on investment.
I feel like some players of Monopoly Go! Especially during the current event, will understand me.

2024.05.20 19:12 8lu-bit Just finished my first visit, and it felt like a beautiful dream.
I came to this subreddit about last week asking for first time advice - so I figured it’d be fitting to come back with my first time at Sleep No More Shanghai. Thank you everyone who left the lovely comments and advice on my first post - much appreciated! I’ve written this both to share my experience and hopefully to exorcise it from my head because it won’t leave me alone and I need to talk about it. So this is going to get incredibly long, sorry! And very spoilery further down.
TL;DR: utter insanity, beauty and wonder and I’m still replaying it in my head even now. Roping in unsuspecting friends to go with me was 100% worth it, and I’m now in my friend chats trying to put together a second trip to Shanghai because I am never going to make the NYC one. Well done, Punchdrunk.
I’d kept myself to only the barest outline of Sleep No More’s details. I knew about Punchdrunk, that it was immersive, and that it was based on Macbeth and Rebecca. That’s about it - and while I was very kindly linked a first-timer's guide on Reddit, I didn’t read it (sorry!).
The only things I took going in were “drink lots of water beforehand”, “dress up”, “wear comfortable shoes”, and “if an actor reaches a hand out it’s okay to take it if it’s meant for you”.
I’ve done immersive theatre before: I went to “The Invitation” in London a while ago, but while the experience was interesting it didn’t really stick. We were shuttled from one “set” to another by staff members, and it felt less immersive and more like a stage play that took place around you instead of onstage.
Sleep No More I know was nothing like that, but nothing could prepare me for that night. I also don’t quite remember the exact floors of where I was, which is definitely the point of Sleep No More - but might make things confusing. So be warned.
We did Sleep No More on the day we landed so I was somewhat jet-lagged. I know I was worried about missing the first loop in my last post, but now that I’ve experienced the show myself, I’m actually glad we didn’t go in at 7PM because of how much was happening around me. When I go a second time, I’ll definitely do the 7PM entry, but probably the next day after I land! Also probably going to dress up again - we all did, and I went for a slinky silk top, witch-themed jewellery and palazzo pants. I doubt the dressing up did anything for me to stand out - not when someone was running around in a full backless lace gown, but it helped me get immersed into the world.
I was not expecting to be shoved to the front and asked to navigate a pitch black room with lanterns as a guide. Incredibly atmospheric, the music was on point but also very scary. Reaching the Manderley was a reprieve, and I made a beeline towards the Manderley once I saw it.
Upon entry, I ended up alone and left to my own devices once I left the elevator. The first thing I did was to take a wrong turn and end up in the toilet. No, not the toilet built for the set, I mean an actual toilet for any visitors who needed to answer the call. I hastily retreated.
I think because I entered at the end of the first loop, I couldn’t find any of the characters, so I decided to wander around. From there I found myself in the hotel lobby, where I watched a man with guyliner croon into a microphone and make eyes at I think the porter.
I didn’t know what that was about yet, so I kept exploring to get my bearings. I spent the first half an hour or so getting lost and prodding/touching EVERYTHING that could be interacted with and not nailed down. Not the best approach, but the set’s details were beautiful: the mirrors, the covered furniture, the open books, the array of fork-knife crosses in the cupboards…
I explored the restaurant, the hotel lobby, the forest with the graveyard and the two apartments. At one point, a whole stream of people walked by following an actor, so I followed the crowd into the ballroom.
In the ballroom, I watched the actors dancing. I still wasn’t sure what to look for or where I should be doing, but that changed when I saw the maid drug a drink and try to offer it to a pregnant woman. I was hooked from that point on.
When the dance ended, I followed the pregnant woman (i.e. Lady Macduff) out of the room. Turns out I make a terrible tracker and an even worse detective, because I would proceed to spend the rest of the night losing track of people and finding myself in strange, foreign places. I eventually found Lady Macduff, the maid and the porter again and watched a scene where the maid and the porter were in an altercation, the porter trying to stop Lady Macduff from drinking from the glass.
The maid won, and I followed the maid because I was about 90% sure the drink was drugged again and why do you want to drug a pregnant woman so badly? I then lost her around a corner and went back to the lobby, where I watched Lady Macduff unpacking her suitcase and cuddling a teddy bear. I wanted to give her a hug there and then because she looked so lost and lonely. Lady Macduff sat down in the restaurant… and the maid re-appeared.
Havoc ensued, and during the maid and Lady Macduff’s interaction - chase, more like, my heart was very much in my throat. When the maid left, my path was blocked by a crowd of onlookers, but Lady Macduff made her way down to the ballroom again. I followed her there, and I watched the hypnotising but very trippy supper scene. At that point, even more questions came up, like: when did the guyliner crooner manage to lose most of his outfit, why was there a very bloody person at the table, why were people pointing at each other and oh god what did I miss.
I had more luck following the maid this time, and was even more intrigued after watching her fight and trap a man under a steel door. I stuck very closely to her and watched her tidy and neaten rooms, but still had no answer as to why she wanted to drug Lady Macduff. A small group of us had found the maid and were just following her around, watching her interact with another man (Duncan?) at one point by pointing out a gift box to him, and then when the man left she was dancing on the bed.
By this point, I was completely convinced the maid was supernatural and she had been tasked with interrupting Lady Macduff’s pregnancy or doing something to the unborn baby, because at one point she was trying to climb up the walls of the bedroom like a demon possessed. We all followed her to the next room where she did more tidying up, stopped at a door at the back of the room, held out a hand and looked at us. For a moment I thought it was to the girl next to me, and then I realised - nope, it was for me. By sheer dumb luck I got a one-on-one.
It was intense. She led me into this tiny, barely lit room where she asked me if I was tired and invited me to sit down. She took off my mask, told me to close my eyes and off I went. She told me to breathe deep and listen to the sound of the ocean, and she asked if I believed in ghosts and the supernatural. At one point, she said we could hear “him” in every footstep in the hotel, and around me the lights were dimming to just a flickering lightbulb and her face. She then led me to a bookshelf where she placed my hands on two cushions, moved aside something, and in the darkness was this blazingly-lit and beautifully made diorama of the bedroom outside. She pushed my face towards it, finished her monologue, and then it was over.
She told me not to be scared at one point and placed a reassuring hand on my shoulder. I can’t decide if this was part of the monologue or if this was her in-character way of telling me not to be nervous because I’m sure I was trembling in my seat. In my defence, I was sitting in a dark room, barely able to see as someone whispered in my ear about supernatural goings.
What I distinctly remember is how brilliant the actress here was. The maid has a very doll-like face that just commands your attention, and despite her even, gentle voice there was an underlying menace. Watching the lights fade around us reducing her to just a ghostly face in the dark was an brilliant experience.
At the end of the session, she led me out of the room, shut the door, and left me in the now-deserted apartment stunned and trying to compose myself. I didn’t see her again, but that was such a privilege.
I wandered past a scene of a man shaving another man on my way out. It probably was important because a lot of people were standing around watching, but I was still trying to calm down from the one-on-one. I went up one more floor and found all the shops and detective agency.
I entered the club where a couple was drinking a bottle of snake liquor that ended with the woman vomiting something up after drinking the shot. From there I went to the detective’s office, where I had way too much fun rifling through drawers and reading documents. I found Grace Naismith’s file, but I didn’t know what it was about, only that it might be a lead. I think if/when I go back, I’ll try and see if that leads to a plotline or if it’s just there for flavour.
For the rest of the night, I followed a bartender - I think? - into a rundown shack and watched a card game and a brutal murder. Turns out I’d just watched Macbeth kill Banquo, and I was none the wiser till I was comparing notes with my friends. I was struck by how bloody the whole thing was: yes, the beating was done behind the counter, but when Banquo was dragged backstage I caught a glimpse of the beaten-in-face and the blood. Don’t know how they did that, but it sent shivers down my spine.
I hung around watching the bartender clean up, drinking and trying to set the place to rights. We all heard footsteps, and I followed the bartender out to the doorway and watched supposedly-dead-Banquo walk away into the alley outside. Next to me, the bartender whisked the person standing beside me for another one-on-one. I was a little disappointed, but I’d gotten one already and I really shouldn’t be greedy.
At this point, I tried to go back into the shack to look at the cards pinned to the wall, but the stewards barred my way and led me downstairs. I ran into a waist-coated man also heading downstairs, and only then did it dawn on me the night was over. I watched Macbeth's execution at the final banquet, and the ending scene of him just swinging above the table, backlit by dark, moody lights… brr.
When my friends and I went back to the hotel room late at night, we alternately sat in dumbfounded silence or exploded into more theories. Upon comparing notes, we had seen completely different things and turns out, yes I did miss a lot, but I didn’t feel bereft at all. One of my friends studies lit, so she filled me in on several characters and context.
If I had any complaints though, it was how some members of the audience were behaving. I was routinely shouldered out of the way and pushed forward as they tried to get a better view. There were a few audience members who actually bent around to get into the actors’ faces while the actors were emoting, but I didn’t see a steward intervene once. Or maybe I missed it?
Also, the groups following Macbeth and Lady Macbeth were a lot. The doorways and staircases were nowhere wide enough for the crowd passing through, especially for the more popular characters, but I don’t know if this situation has already improved. You could also clearly tell who’d been there before, because they’d be standing at the actors’ exits obstructing the way.
I went home with a bookmark and a souvenir guide, but no t-shirt because the gift shop was incredibly crowded. Overall though: I’m hooked and am now planning my next trip to the McKinnon to find more characters. Apparently I missed two whole floors! I’m also very curious to know whether the one-on-one with the maid I got differs from what’s currently in NYC at the moment.
Hopefully I’ll get to go sooner than later, because I’d want to go one more time before it closes for good. Not any time soon though, because I'm still processing a lot.
