2024.05.13 19:32 Epididymis23 US West Coast Roadtrip Final 18-day Itinerary
Hi All!
My wife and me will leave to the US from Europe for a West Coast Roadtrip and I have a 95% finalised itinerary but if there are any recommended activities that I am missing or if I packed too much in a day, please advise. Campgrounds and all of the activities which need reservations are already reserved. Specialty coffee places and food tips are very welcome, we are not picky at all but love to eat basically anything from Five Guys to gourmet restaurants.
Day 1 - Arrive at 17:30 in San Francisco airport and take our rental car, drive to Pacifica Taco Bell for dinner, shop in Walmart or any other chain for roadtrip groceries and sleep in the Inn at Moss Landing, heading down there on Highway 1
Day 2 - Whale watch with blue ocean whale watching at 9 a.m. Head down to Monterey after that for lunch, check out Carmel by the Sea and because of the road closure at Big Sur head down to our next accomodation in Cambria for the evening
Day 3 - Leave in the morning, check out Hearst Castle and elephant seal watch and San Simeone, coffee at Scout coffee in San Luis Obispo, fast food for lunch, check out Morro Bay and Montana de Oro or Pismo beach and drive to Los Angeles in the evening to the hotel.
Day 4 - Universal Studio in the morning, mainly Harry Potter world and after we are finished there, check out the sunset at Griffith Observatorium and walk to Vista or Los Feliz Cinema to watch a classic movie and if there is time go to a bar for cocktails in the proximity.
Day 5 - Check out Santa Monica Pier, go down to Sports Basement to pick up car camping rentals (inflatable bed, trekking poles, sleeping bag) and drive to Joshua Tree campground for a late afternoon, evening hike and sleep in the campground.
Day 6 - Wake up early and do another hike in the morning, after that drive to Las Vegas hotel. Check out the Strip and then put it all on red in the hotel casino? We have a room in a great hotel so this may be a more relaxing afternoon / day.
Day 7 - Leave LV in the morning and drive through or to Valley of Fire State Park for a little while and arrive in Zion National Park in the afternoon to do a very short hike (Watchman Trail).
Day 8 - Scout Lookout trip and The Narrows in Zion NP in the morning and use the shuttle back, either to the car or if we have time and energy to see the Emerald Pools. Leave late and arrive to our Page accomodation late in the evening
Day 9 - Head to the Horseshoe Bend very early to see the sunrise (it is really close from our airbnb). Booked Antalope Canyon tour for early afternoon. Drive to Grand Canyon Mather campground in the afternoon, if possible catch the sunset there and sleep in the campground.
Day 10 - Start in the morning, hike the South Kaibab trail to Cedar Ridge or Skeleton Point depending on the weather and our energy level. Long drive in the afternoon to Death Valley Furnace Creek campground and arrive there in the evening for sleep and stargazing.
Day 11 - This seems like a really exhausting day but will have a rest day after this. Wake up really early and drive to Sequoia National Park, have a shorter hike (Moro rock trail or eagle viewpoint) and maybe the General Sherman Tree. In the afternoon drive to a hotel in Oakhurst for the night.
Day 12 - Relax in the hotel, maybe check out Bass Lake in the vicinity? If we are not tired, which I think we will be then maybe hike in Yosemite that day, too.
Day 13 - Lower Pines campground reservation, all-day hike. Recommendation for hikes? Sleep in the campground.
Day 14 - Whole day Yosemite. Recommendation for all day hikes? Sleep in the campground.
Day 15 - Multiple options, do not know which would be the best or most viable option:
Day 17 - Alcatraz day tour, more sightseeing in SF, recommendations are welcome. Dinner in State Bird Provisions for our last full day.
Day 18 - Last day, check out of the hotel, drink some coffee and grab some fast food, maybe a very light walk in SF and head to the airport to leave at 4:25 pm.

Almost all of you are my fellow Leaf owners, hoping for just one new chargepoint on your favorite route, before the great dwarven CHAdeMO forges beneath the earth go cold for all time. Here's an update.
Here are all of the new US and Canadian CHAdeMO (Leaf fast-charging) stations that rolled out in April, according to the Alternative Fuels Data Center. You can fetch the data yourself here. Feel free to report inaccuracies to the AFDC.
For comparison's sake: in the US, there were 200 "new" (or updated) CHAdeMO stations added in March, with at least 200 chargepoints. To put it in perspective, there were 102 new or updated US stations in April of 2023. This month's report is surprisingly strong, given how late we are in CHAdeMO's lifecycle. It is unclear if this is due to a large number of refreshed stations, or a large rollout of new stations that happen to include at least one CHAdeMO chargepoint, but it may be the latter thanks to Inflation Reduction Act funding. In any case, it is good news for those of us with legacy vehicles.
Keep in mind that even EVGo has started to roll out stations where only some of the bays support CHAdeMO. This makes sense given that only Nissan still sells a CHAdeMO pure-battery-electric car in the US, and the newer Nissan Ariya model is CCS. The Mitsubishi Plug-In Hybrid Outlander PHEV also supports CHAdeMO.
Some of these chargepoints will be "refreshes," e.g. the provider replaced them with faster chargers etc. Some may be incorrect. This report is only as good as the Alternative Fuels Data Center data.

Here are all (*) of the new US and Canadian CCS (Level 3 fast-charging) stations that rolled out in April 2024, according to the Department of Energy. You can get the data yourself here.
These chargers are suitable for most new EVs on the market, except for:
There were 330 CCS charging stations with a total of 682 chargepoints added or refreshed in April 2024, which is a major uptick in both stations and chargepoints. There were only 166 new CCS charging stations in April 2023, with only 267 chargepoints. Things are trending dramatically upwards.
Some part of this is due to Tesla Magic Dock stations. Previously Tesla didn't report these to the AFDC as CCS, but now they do. And that makes sense because all CCS drivers can use them.
NOTE: most Tesla Superchargers do NOT have magic dock as of this writing (all those shown in this report should have it). I recommend using PlugShare to locate compatible stations for your vehicle.
(*) "What about other Tesla Superchargers? Can't everybody charge with NACS now?"
It's coming for many makes and models, and for newer Ford models as well as a few other manufacturers charging at v3 and v4 Superchargers is already an option with a free adapter from the automakers. GM should release their adapter in the coming weeks. But since they are not open to all CCS vehicles, this report is not the place for them. Tesla's app provides the best guide to their locations, including locations that work with non-Tesla vehicles.

So let me start by saying I am a skeptic and I honestly don’t believe in ghosts or god or anything science can’t explain, but here is my story and I have no explanation for it.
15 years ago or so I lived in Cripple Creek Colorado, a little mining town on the back side of Pikes Peak. It’s a small old mining town that nearly died but had a revival when gambling was legalised.
I got a job at one of the casinos as a table games dealer and decided to move up there as I was living in Colorado Springs at the time about 45 minutes through mountain roads that in the winter become quite treacherous.
I found an old house on the outskirts of town and rented it, it was built in the late 1800s and was a miners house way back in the day, the house showed its age, floors were not level, every floorboard creaked it was old. The basement was very creepy as it was unfinished and had been left in a bad way, dirt floors, walls crumbling in, and a noticeable upside down cross carved on the wall, this didn’t bother me as I was and still am a pure skeptic.
My cat was so freaked out when we moved in he barely moved from my bed for about a week. He would constantly hide under the blankets, as the house was so old and cold I didn’t mind the little guy under the sheets to help keep me warm.
In fact the house was always so cold I had to run the heater, plus a space heater in my room plus a a heating blanket on my bed.
A few months into my stay I decided to get a roommate to help with bills, I got a fellow dealer at the casino to live into the upstairs space and all was good, it was shortly after he moved in that the event occurred.
We worked odd hours and shifts at the casino, I was on a 4am to 4pm shift when this occurred. I woke up about 3 am and jumped into the shower, I got out and walked from the bathroom to my bedroom which was right next door, got dressed and was about to head out to work, when in the dark I saw the shadow of a person in a heavy down jacket walk up the stairs at the opposite end of the living room, I even heard the sound of his jacket!
In the moment I just assumed it was Brandon my roommate home for a break as we lived literally a few minutes walk from the casino. But then I got to thinking, he started at 3am and shouldn’t be on break. Not sure what to do next I grabbed my pistol and went up the stairs, I looked in every room and found nothing, I put my gun back in my room and hauled ass to the casino where sure enough Brandon was sitting in the pit.
I have no explanation for this, and again I don’t believe in ghosts, but I saw that guy in my house…
I still get goosebumps to this day when I think about it
